- 0:00What's up everybody? Charlie Marlow here.
- 0:01Quick video talking about the Cardinals hiring Heim Bloom as
- 0:07an advisor to John Mosala. All.
- 0:09Right I. Absolutely love this move.
- 0:13Maybe I'm too negative sometimes.
- 0:15The Cardinals haven't had a great year.
- 0:16Let's be honest, I love the addition of Heim Bloom coming to
- 0:21the Cardinals for several different reasons.
- 0:24I was going to sit down and do a video talking about this, but I
- 0:27was on Hot Take Central on Five Night of the Fan earlier today.
- 0:31We had this discussion, Jimmy the Cat Hayes and I disagreed a
- 0:35little bit. We always do.
- 0:36We always argue, and we're not even doing that on purpose.
- 0:39We just we just argue. But I'm thinking, why sit down
- 0:42and basically say the same exact things I said about Heim Bloom
- 0:45on the radio when I can just intro it and throw to the clip
- 0:49where we talked about Heim Bloom?
- 0:51I love the move. For these reasons.
- 0:54You'll hear in the discussion right now on Hot Take Central,
- 0:57on 590 The Fan and Joy. I think we have it wrong that
- 1:01suddenly John's setting up a little table in his office for
- 1:04Bloom. I disagree.
- 1:05I don't think that's. It look what happened already.
- 1:08Who did they trade with this winter?
- 1:11Which two teams, the Red Sox and?
- 1:14Rays. And the right What are the two
- 1:15teams KAIM Heim Bloom worked for?
- 1:17His name is Heim. Heim.
- 1:19I told you that. It's Heim.
- 1:21I said earlier. I.
- 1:22Called him shame and I just. And then a text said it was
- 1:26wrong and I said no, the text was right.
- 1:27It's, yeah. 'Cause, he said ium.
- 1:30Oh, I was messing with audio earlier.
- 1:32He's a member. So what are you going to say?
- 1:36I think it's fascinating for a couple different reasons.
- 1:39I think the succession plan, which I think if you go back to
- 1:43that that press conference at spring training, what was it
- 1:48last year? So when John Mozalak has his
- 1:51last three years, it seems like that's his last three years as
- 1:55the president of baseball operations.
- 1:57And then I think everybody assumes it's either Gersh or
- 2:00Randy Flores. Now, if Heim Bloom is still here
- 2:03and he's been the number one guy for both the Rays and the Red
- 2:07Sox, I think it's an interesting, basically
- 2:11discussion point if if he could potentially succeed John
- 2:15Mozalak. OK, I'm not saying that can't
- 2:19happen, but I'm just saying my experience has been decisions
- 2:24aren't made by MO in his office, on the phone.
- 2:27They're made by the group and my guess would be Bloom.
- 2:32MO says, what do you think of this guy or do you know, you
- 2:35know, this guy? Can you help us with this?
- 2:38And then takes it to the group? I just don't think they're
- 2:41setting a little table up in MO's office now.
- 2:44Eventually when MO maybe if it's a bad season or MO decides to
- 2:48move on and try something else. Maybe Bloom is a guy.
- 2:52I get the feeling Bloom will have another job before that
- 2:56time comes around. Could be because he's a
- 2:58commodity and I think this is just sort of a holding pattern
- 3:02for him. But could be wrong, I don't
- 3:04know. Haven't talked to him or MO
- 3:06about it. I assume we'll know more about
- 3:09the role at the winter warm up when MO talks to people.
- 3:13If you're Bloom though and you did really well with the Rays,
- 3:17you went to the Red Sox big market team.
- 3:20I think it's fair to say it was pretty weird because he's a
- 3:23draft and development guy. It's kind of funny he wrote the
- 3:26Rays way, you know we have the the George Kissel Cardinals way.
- 3:31He's also a pitching guru so they brought him into Boston to
- 3:35do all their drafting and developing and kind of redo
- 3:38that. Well the first year is COVID.
- 3:40You have a five round draft. They traded Mookie Betts, so
- 3:44everybody hates him for that, but that's also coming from
- 3:46ownership. So again, I just think that what
- 3:49he does, basically working with the Rays, where you're on a
- 3:52budget, to me, that's the Cardinals with about two to
- 3:55three times the payroll. I think he fits here better than
- 3:59the Boston Red Sox. I think he'll fit wherever
- 4:03someone wants to give him a chunk of money, so.
- 4:05But why wouldn't you? In two years, let's say in two
- 4:07years, he could be the chief decision maker of the Cardinals.
- 4:11That's a pretty good gig. That's a pretty good game.
- 4:14He could. I just if you're asking me to
- 4:17guess, I don't know. I don't.
- 4:19I don't think any of us know. But if you asked me to guess, my
- 4:24guess would be he will have another job by then.
- 4:26Maybe he comes back, but I think he's in a holding pattern right
- 4:30now. So he'll advise MO and then
- 4:32other teams might present him with opportunity and he could
- 4:36jump at that. What do you go ahead?
- 4:38No, I just think I get that. How many jobs are potentially
- 4:42better than the Cardinals, though?
- 4:44So let's say. They're chief chokers.
- 4:47Well, let's say he does really well this year.
- 4:48The Cardinals love him. I just think it it sets up an
- 4:50interesting decision two years from now, in my opinion, because
- 4:54you have Gersh. He's been the number two, he's
- 4:57been here forever, He's interviewed elsewhere, hasn't
- 5:00got those gigs. Randy Flores, it seems like his
- 5:04kind of usurped Gersh as potentially the next guy.
- 5:07He's done great with the draft, but if you have Bloom in the
- 5:10room and he's already done it twice with success.
- 5:14And and. When I say Red Sox, the success,
- 5:17it was up and down, but he's been the main guy.
- 5:19I think it if Bloom is still here 2 years from now, if
- 5:22Mozalak does want to move on, I just think that's very
- 5:25interesting. Do you go with the in house guy
- 5:28of a Gerscher of Flores who's been here longer or do you go
- 5:31with a guy like Bloom who's done it at a very high level with the
- 5:35race? I'm not writing anything off,
- 5:37but Cardinals tend to like in house guys.
- 5:40That's kind of their MO and I know they like Gersh.
- 5:44Even though the quite what does Gersh do?
- 5:47That's what you always hear from Cardinal fans, OK?
- 5:49He's part of the team that puts deals together or shoots them
- 5:54down. Flores they like a lot too.
- 5:58But who knows? Who knows, maybe Bloom is is so
- 6:02brilliant with what he's advising that they're like let's
- 6:05hear more from this guy and he and he and he builds that up
- 6:09into something. But to me right now I would
- 6:12guess that is he's another set of eyes like MO said that they
- 6:16could run things by that. Maybe someone outside the
- 6:19pipeline sees it differently and gives them a perspective that
- 6:22they can. Use I think that's huge, too,
- 6:25though isn't it fair to say that the Cardinals had it rolling
- 6:28back in the day? They had that competitive
- 6:30advantage in terms of analytics and drafting.
- 6:33Let's be real, they've lost that a bit.
- 6:35So to bring someone in who was with an organization that was
- 6:38also at the forefront of drafting, analytics development,
- 6:42I think it's perfect, even if he's not the the chief Baseball
- 6:45officer two years from now. I do think bringing in a very
- 6:47bright mind from outside the organization that thinks like
- 6:51the Cardinals, I think that could be big, OK?
- 6:54It's a big help. But I bring up AJ Prezinski
- 6:58again because I asked him about hey and when last year was
- 7:02pretty bad. It's been a while since they
- 7:04were deep. You know actually in the hunt to
- 7:06win a World Series. Do you think that the brand has
- 7:10faded? And he said no teams go through
- 7:12that up and and he's a guy if if if he wanted to throw out some
- 7:16venom, he'd do it. He doesn't care.
- 7:18And then he talked about the Cardinal Way and how not his
- 7:23thing and he let them know early on not.
- 7:25But he did say, and I thought it was almost touching, he said,
- 7:29you know, he had a bad experience with the Red Sox.
- 7:31He came with a bad reputation that you know, as a as a
- 7:35troublemaker and then change that literally in a in a short
- 7:40part of a season. And he said it act being a
- 7:43Cardinal actually made him love baseball again.
- 7:46Like he actually loved playing ball in Saint Louis.
- 7:50And he said it still has a great reputation as a place you want
- 7:53to go, but it all comes down to the money.
- 7:55If they're not going to pay you, they're not going to come.
- 7:57But he doesn't think the brand has faded.
- 7:59What? Do you think it has a little?
- 8:01Bit. What do you think?
- 8:02A. Little bit.
- 8:03Did you see BD threes? I did what?
- 8:06Do you? What do you think of that?
- 8:07You said normal. Just about, they're probably
- 8:10done payroll wise and he brought up the revenue challenges.
- 8:13Yeah, I think, I think we all assume that.
- 8:15OK. So.
- 8:17That's why I think the Cardinals are probably done.
- 8:19But I don't think it's I don't think it's 100%.
- 8:21If the greatest deal ever came across the desk, they probably
- 8:24are interested, but for the most part they're probably done OK.
- 8:28That's all right if unless a deal presents itself, meaning
- 8:32you could get CS for Burleson. Straight up, real quick.
- 8:37Back to Bloom. I do think, I always say judge
- 8:39people by their actions more so than their words.
- 8:42The fact that this dude is known as the pitching guru and the two
- 8:46deals they made this winter were with guys.
- 8:50He's literally had his hands on pitchers for both organizations
- 8:53that he worked with, Red Sox raised.
- 8:56I think that's telling. I mean, the Red Sox deal was
- 9:00basically, and I might maybe that maybe did have a hand in
- 9:03it, I don't know. But how could he not?
- 9:05But, I mean, they dumped Tyler O'Neill.
- 9:08That's what they did all right with.
- 9:10I thought the Rays trade was good.
- 9:12I thought they picked up a legitimate bullpen piece.
- 9:15I like that trade a lot. I think the the deal with the
- 9:18Sox was just a dump of a guy that the Cardinals had come to
- 9:22an impasse with. But you don't think that Nick
- 9:24Robertson has some upside to be a reliever this year and help
- 9:28you out? Yeah, he has some upside.
- 9:31I I value player for player. I think Tyler O'Neill has more
- 9:35value, just not with the Cardinals.
- 9:37And I understand based on his injuries there weren't maybe a
- 9:41ton of teams that wanted to roll the dice on them.
- 9:43I think Tyler O'Neill is going to end up being a good player
- 9:46somewhere. I think sometimes we we forget
- 9:49about how valuable a good reliever can be when when the
- 9:52Luke Voit trade happen and the next year COVID year, he's
- 9:55hitting bombs. Look, Giovanni Gallegos has been
- 9:59a very good reliever for the Cardinals for four or five
- 10:02years. I understand last year wasn't
- 10:04the greatest year, but he's essentially been the Cardinals
- 10:06second or third best reliever for about 5 years.
- 10:09That that's pretty valuable. There's no question.
- 10:11Nick Robertson can be anything like that.
- 10:13That's a pretty Dang good trade for the Cardinals.
- 10:15If he can? Or what happens if Tyler O'Neil
- 10:18suddenly crushes and hits 30 homers and knocks in, you know,
- 10:22100 runs stays healthy? That that's pretty valuable too.
- 10:25Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying bullpen pieces
- 10:28are important, especially if there's questions about your
- 10:31your starting rotation like the Cardinals have.
- 10:34Yeah, you need. You better have a good bullpen.
- 10:37But Tyler O'Neill, whatever he does this year, he wasn't
- 10:40staying here past this season. So both these deals, I hope they
- 10:44work out well for both teams. The Red Sox get Tyler O'Neill,
- 10:47the Cardinals get control with Robertson, and the same with the
- 10:50Rays. The Cardinals get a really good
- 10:51reliever for one year and the Rays get their control with with
- 10:55Palacios for six years. Palacios to me has upside.
- 11:00Probably wouldn't have been here if there weren't, you know, a
- 11:03ton of injuries. And he took his opportunity, he
- 11:06ran with it. I don't think.
- 11:08I don't think he's going to be a star.
- 11:10Hopefully he has a nice, long career because he's a very nice
- 11:13kid. I like what the Cardinals got in
- 11:15return. I think they win that trade.
- 11:18Tyler O'Neill? Who knows?
- 11:19There's too many question marks with what what?
- 11:22What the reliever that the Cardinals got and what Tyler
- 11:25O'Neill's going to be if he can stay healthy.
- 11:27Both teams can win a trade too, though.
- 11:29I mean, the Rays are going to get Palacios for six years.
- 11:32If he's a John Jay player for six years, that's that's very
- 11:35valuable for them. For the Cardinals, they get
- 11:36Kittredge. Hopefully he's good this year.
- 11:38Maybe you sign him to a two year deal and he stays for a while.
- 11:41That's it. That's all you can have.
- 11:43Fair trades, man. Trade Don't have to always just.
- 11:46That's right. You don't have to destroy the
- 11:47other team. What's the most fair trade
- 11:50recent? How about I almost had to let me
- 11:53hear my thought. Ryan O'Reilly, Tate, Thompson.
- 11:55That's a fair trade. Both franchises won.
- 11:58The Blues win a Cup. The Sabers get a stud.
- 12:02For the next 10 years. It's OK to have a trade where
- 12:05both teams win. You're damn right that's fine.
- 12:07No, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 12:09Teams have different needs. Some teams wanna win right now.
- 12:13Some teams wanna win three years from now.
- 12:15Damn right. But who said that?
- 12:17Who said that a team has to win? We don't know what's going to
- 12:20happen. So we're talking about the
- 12:22trade. Who you think got the better
- 12:23part of it? That's all.
- 12:24No one said one team has to win and the other has to lose.
- 12:28But my point is my. Point is, I think it was.
- 12:31I think, I think the trade to get Kittredge was a better trade
- 12:34for the Cardinals than the other trade because I still think
- 12:37Tyler has a big upside. That's all.
- 12:41I have no idea how I said. I have no idea what's going to.
- 12:43Work. My point though is you're
- 12:45getting kit rich for one year. He's a proven commodity.
- 12:48No, let's be real about this. Nobody knew anything about
- 12:51Giovanni Gallegos in that trade, right?
- 12:55Who are we talking about in that trade?
- 12:57Remember the left-handed pitcher that didn't do anything?
- 13:00The reliever cat. What was his name?
- 13:01I can't remember his name. That was coming over there from
- 13:03the Yankees. That was the guy who was talked
- 13:06about. What was his name?
- 13:07I forgot his name. Somebody in the text line, I
- 13:08don't remember who. He had a weird name in the
- 13:11trade. Cole.
- 13:13And I'm working. I'm working.
- 13:15Anyway, my point is Nick Robertson could be a Giovanni
- 13:18Gallegos potentially for you there's a lot of value.
- 13:20There is it chasing Shreve. Jason Shreve is Come on, Jason
- 13:24Shreve. Come on.
- 13:25Yeah, I didn't. I didn't like him at all, even
- 13:28when they got him. And you like JoJo Romero?
- 13:32The cardinal, the. Card you do.
- 13:34I didn't the he wasn't like a kid.
- 13:37I I didn't think he was that good.
- 13:40It could have been. I didn't know JoJo Romero they
- 13:43got, they got for a couple of Starbucks.
- 13:46Right, Mundo. And he was.
- 13:48He was very good, right? The Marlins and other
- 13:51organization wanted to interview Bloom for their president
- 13:54baseball operations, and he declined.
- 13:56I think he wants a reset. And the Red Sox are still paying
- 13:59them Danny Boy and Iowa. Hey dude.
- 14:03Hey dude, let's see here. Jane Tech.
- 14:06You want to go to the Marlins, though?
- 14:07If you're him. All I'm saying is the Cardinals
- 14:09are a lot like the Rays with more money.
- 14:12It's a pretty good gig.
