- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome into another episode of did check O Daily. Andrew
- 0:14Speaker 2: did check O Eagles Pete, reporter for insidethbirds dot Com,
- 0:17Speaker 2: here with you and I want to get into some
- 0:20Speaker 2: storylines that I'll be keeping an eye on as it
- 0:23Speaker 2: pertains to the offense and the defense heading into training camp.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We'll break this up into two podcasts.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Today is going to be about the offense. And there's
- 0:31Speaker 2: a lot of questions that I have about the offense.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And understand that when I say storylines, I'm not suggesting
- 0:38Speaker 2: that their concerns, but they are topics that are worth
- 0:41Speaker 2: monitoring throughout the summer and into the fall. And first
- 0:46Speaker 2: and foremost taking center stage is just how does Jalen
- 0:51Speaker 2: Hurts take to this new offense and how different will
- 0:54Speaker 2: it ultimately look? Fair questions, But when you look at
- 0:59Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts, I understand that he's had to adapt to
- 1:03Speaker 2: a number of different offensive coordinators, a number of different
- 1:07Speaker 2: quarterback coaches, and he's largely responded. But this is going
- 1:11Speaker 2: to be drastically different. Because it's one thing to immerse
- 1:17Speaker 2: yourself in a system that's minor league tweaked relative to
- 1:23Speaker 2: previous years, but the Eagles have always adopted similar principles, with.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni leading away.
- 1:31Speaker 2: This is going to be something that is expected to
- 1:34Speaker 2: look drastically different from anything the Eagles have run in
- 1:38Speaker 2: the past, and.
- 1:41Speaker 1: The key is to always evolve and grow as an offense.
- 1:43Speaker 2: And you can look at the offense from last season
- 1:46Speaker 2: and say, well, the offensive line was injured and that's
- 1:49Speaker 2: why they couldn't run the ball, and that took him
- 1:52Speaker 2: out of their comfort zone, their bread and butter, whatever
- 1:57Speaker 2: you want to call it.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And I don't know if it's that same, because to me, you.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Can't continue to run it back every year and not
- 2:05Speaker 2: expect other teams to catch up to what you're doing.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And this system that Sean Mannion is bringing in with
- 2:12Speaker 2: the influences of Matt Lafleur and Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan,
- 2:18Speaker 2: Mike McDaniel, it's going to involve a lot of under
- 2:23Speaker 2: center play action, middle of the field utilization.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You're going to see tight splits.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Pre snap motion, all of those things that the Eagles
- 2:36Speaker 2: have flirted with in the past, but they've never made
- 2:38Speaker 2: it a hallmark of their offense. And while Jalen Hurts
- 2:42Speaker 2: has done all of these things at different points of
- 2:45Speaker 2: his career. It's not about doing it for a game
- 2:49Speaker 2: or you know, highlighting a series. Luck he did it here. No,
- 2:53Speaker 2: it's about being able to lean into those principles and
- 2:57Speaker 2: make it a mainstay, a focal point of your offense.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Because this very much feels like this is the system
- 3:04Speaker 2: that the Eagles are committed to. They believe in very much.
- 3:07Speaker 2: He started at the top of the organization, so I
- 3:10Speaker 2: don't necessarily think that this will be something like when
- 3:13Speaker 2: Kellen Moore got to Philadelphia with the ideas that there
- 3:19Speaker 2: would be more motion and different elements of his offenses
- 3:22Speaker 2: of the past. He saw glimpses of that. For the
- 3:25Speaker 2: first four weeks. It didn't look esthetically pleasing, and it
- 3:29Speaker 2: wasn't effective. There were a lot of turnovers. The passing
- 3:33Speaker 2: game was largely disjointed, and they had to scrap it
- 3:37Speaker 2: and scale it back, I should say. And then you
- 3:41Speaker 2: saw after the bye week they leaned into the running game.
- 3:44Speaker 2: It helps when sat Van Barkley's was having this season
- 3:47Speaker 2: that he was having. We're getting off to that start
- 3:49Speaker 2: and you have the offensive line playing at a historic, historic.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Rate, but they don't make that notable change less.
- 4:00Speaker 2: There's a reason for it, and the reason for it
- 4:03Speaker 2: is you see the collection of talent that they have.
- 4:05Speaker 1: You don't want the.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Season to go down the drain, and you try to
- 4:09Speaker 2: find a way to.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Augment the offense and make it effective.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And they found the successful remedy being running the football.
- 4:17Speaker 2: It was something that they had to do out of
- 4:19Speaker 2: necessity and they ended up having a historic season from
- 4:21Speaker 2: the offensive line at Saquon Barkley.
- 4:24Speaker 1: But this is going to be a little bit different
- 4:27Speaker 1: because Jalen's learning the.
- 4:29Speaker 2: System from the ground up. He's meaning he's learning it
- 4:32Speaker 2: from the spring. He's not being asked to try it
- 4:36Speaker 2: out in the middle of the season leading up to
- 4:37Speaker 2: the Chargers game like he did last season, because I
- 4:39Speaker 2: don't think that's fair, nor do I think it's practical,
- 4:44Speaker 2: right when you've been running a certain system for months
- 4:47Speaker 2: to all of a sudden say hey, let's try this.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And I thought that they did some positive things despite
- 4:52Speaker 2: the turnovers in that game. It just wasn't fair or
- 4:56Speaker 2: realistic to expect the Eagles to suddenly adopt a different
- 5:00Speaker 2: philosophy at that stage of the game. But Jalen has
- 5:04Speaker 2: been more willing to change than ever before.
- 5:07Speaker 1: That was in the ESPN story. He's embracing the newness here.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And if you listen to what he had to say
- 5:15Speaker 2: or what Sean Mannion had to say as they're continuing
- 5:18Speaker 2: to install this system, they both sound very optimistic. They
- 5:21Speaker 2: sound eager to attack this process and they both will.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Jalen seems refreshed and excited.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And when you can articulate the wise behind the instructions
- 5:32Speaker 2: and those directives, you're going to.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Elicit by it.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And Jalen is a quarterback that you have to be
- 5:39Speaker 2: able to illustrate your.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Vision and explain it for there to be a.
- 5:47Speaker 2: You know, I don't want to say a buy in,
- 5:48Speaker 2: but maybe just have somebody full fledged committed to what
- 5:52Speaker 2: you're asking them to do.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And look, it's going to be a change. The ball's
- 5:58Speaker 1: got to come out.
- 5:59Speaker 2: It's going to be a timing based offense, a true
- 6:01Speaker 2: West Coast offense. Jalen hasn't always been someone that has
- 6:05Speaker 2: got the ball out on time. There's a lot of
- 6:07Speaker 2: moments where he's held onto the ball and those throws
- 6:12Speaker 2: that he does make have largely been outside the numbers
- 6:15Speaker 2: where you're throwing it up to Devonte Smith and A. J.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Brown in years.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Past, and yes, he's fit the ball in some tight windows.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I thought the throw that he had, I think it
- 6:25Speaker 2: was to Devonte Smith against the Chargers was one of
- 6:28Speaker 2: the best throws. Was the best throw he made off
- 6:30Speaker 2: season last year. And you're gonna have to do more
- 6:33Speaker 2: of that in this offense. There has to be more
- 6:36Speaker 2: anticipatory throws and timing based working in the middle of.
- 6:41Speaker 1: The field, keeping the offense on schedule.
- 6:43Speaker 2: The explosives will be there, but I don't think that
- 6:45Speaker 2: they're going to that they're going to focus solely on.
- 6:50Speaker 1: That, or that won't be a necessarily primary objective.
- 6:53Speaker 2: You'll be able to take advantage of those in moments,
- 6:56Speaker 2: but you want to continue to lead into the running
- 6:59Speaker 2: game and make the passing game more efficient because one
- 7:03Speaker 2: thing that we can both we can all agree on
- 7:06Speaker 2: is that the passing game over the past.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Two seasons has not been good enough.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And that's really for two seasons, including the year league
- 7:14Speaker 2: has won the Super Bowl.
- 7:15Speaker 1: It kind of gets lost in everything. But with that
- 7:18Speaker 1: collection of talent, it just simply.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Has to be better and they have to run the
- 7:22Speaker 2: football more efficiently. For the passing game to really take
- 7:26Speaker 2: full effect, and I do believe that that's going to
- 7:29Speaker 2: be the emphasis of this offense. Get the offensive line rolling,
- 7:32Speaker 2: get Saquon Barkley going, and they be able to reap.
- 7:35Speaker 1: The benefits off of that.
- 7:36Speaker 2: But the big question or storyline that I have will
- 7:39Speaker 2: be monitoring how Jalen Hurts progresses as he continues to
- 7:43Speaker 2: onboard and immerse himself with yet another new offense, but
- 7:48Speaker 2: one that is wholly different from anything.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Legals have done in the past.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Another storyline for me will be the health of the
- 7:56Speaker 2: offensive line, and it's impossible to to determine that at
- 8:02Speaker 2: this time because right now it seems like everyone's healthy,
- 8:05Speaker 2: everyone's pushing forward and pulling in the right direction, and
- 8:09Speaker 2: they are going to be the key in the.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Offense being able.
- 8:13Speaker 2: To take it to the next level advance from where
- 8:17Speaker 2: they were last season. With how to health the offensive line,
- 8:20Speaker 2: I'm not sure that it much matters how skilled of
- 8:23Speaker 2: a play caller Sean Mannion is or pal jaywhen Hurts
- 8:27Speaker 2: takes this offense, because it all starts up front. The
- 8:30Speaker 2: Eagles had been a team that really relies on the
- 8:35Speaker 2: impact of the trenches and their ability. They have the
- 8:40Speaker 2: NFL's most talented offensive line. They had a lot of
- 8:44Speaker 2: injuries last season. The attrition caught up to that lane.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Johnson missed a lot of time. Am Jurgens, as we've
- 8:50Speaker 2: talked about, had the off season back surgery and that
- 8:53Speaker 2: February after the Super Bowl and clearly wasn't himself.
- 8:56Speaker 1: He was battling through and landed Diggerson battle excuse me,
- 9:00Speaker 1: battling through it.
- 9:02Speaker 2: And what you saw was in an emic run offense,
- 9:07Speaker 2: and that really made the force the Eagles to be
- 9:10Speaker 2: behind the sticks, becoming one dimensional, and then defenses were
- 9:13Speaker 2: able to key on a sore spot of the offense,
- 9:16Speaker 2: which was the passing game. That's me sort of summarizing
- 9:21Speaker 2: it in the most simplistic form, but.
- 9:23Speaker 1: That's basically my view of it.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And the offensive line right now I think will stand
- 9:30Speaker 2: to benefit immensely from the new system that Sean Mannion's
- 9:35Speaker 2: bringing in in terms of the wide zone and things
- 9:37Speaker 2: like that, where angling is a point of emphasis that
- 9:42Speaker 2: should you know when your alignment are moving laterally, when
- 9:46Speaker 2: they're moving horizontally as opposed to moving vertically. It should
- 9:50Speaker 2: eat some of the pressure, some of the wear and
- 9:52Speaker 2: tear on these players allow them to accentuate their athletic qualities.
- 9:57Speaker 2: And they all have that, and they all, to me
- 10:00Speaker 2: feel like they're suited for this offense. And listen to
- 10:04Speaker 2: someone like Lane Johnson. For so many years, for his
- 10:08Speaker 2: whole career, it's been one on one ano Imano. He's
- 10:12Speaker 2: had to handle a heavy workload the NFL's top pass
- 10:15Speaker 2: rusher or whoever, the opposition's top pass rusher. And this
- 10:20Speaker 2: time he mentioned that, you know, if he loses one
- 10:22Speaker 2: on one, lab guard help. And I think when you
- 10:25Speaker 2: have lineman moving laterally and getting into space and climbing
- 10:29Speaker 2: to the second level versus attacking forward, where there's just
- 10:33Speaker 2: that rogue grading, grinding nature of it that tends to
- 10:39Speaker 2: really lead to some you know, wear and tear on
- 10:42Speaker 2: the body, I think this shift should be able to
- 10:45Speaker 2: help them. But I think that for this offense to
- 10:49Speaker 2: really be able to be fully imagined, the running game
- 10:52Speaker 2: will be front and center of everything. With Saquon Barkley,
- 10:56Speaker 2: and I've said this many times, but Sekwon Barkley was
- 10:59Speaker 2: the same player that he was in twenty twenty four.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I saw the burst, I saw everything.
- 11:04Speaker 2: He was healthy, he looked fresh, and he looked fresh
- 11:06Speaker 2: at that training camp as well, so they're not getting
- 11:10Speaker 2: ashed a diminishing player or anything like that. Taking all
- 11:15Speaker 2: that into account, you need that offensive line to be
- 11:18Speaker 2: able to block it up. And I think to an
- 11:21Speaker 2: even larger picture, they don't necessarily have clear cut answers
- 11:26Speaker 2: as to who would replace any of the starters should
- 11:29Speaker 2: an injury arise. We've talked a lot on this podcast,
- 11:32Speaker 2: I've written a lot about it on Inside the Birds
- 11:34Speaker 2: dot com about the inexperience along the offensive line. When
- 11:39Speaker 2: you look at the reserves, aside from Fred Johnson, there's
- 11:43Speaker 2: Miles Hitson hasn't played an NFL snap, Cameron Williams did
- 11:47Speaker 2: play a NFL snaps in the season finale and I
- 11:50Speaker 2: thought did okay, but it was just one game. Drew
- 11:54Speaker 2: Kendall eighty nine career snaps. He's going to be your
- 11:56Speaker 2: top interior offensive linement on game day. Then you have
- 12:00Speaker 2: other players like Willie Lampkin, you have Jake Majors, you
- 12:03Speaker 2: have Michael Morris, who the Eagles drafted. So player development
- 12:07Speaker 2: is going to be crucial here. Cross training becomes all
- 12:09Speaker 2: the more important. They also signed Michael Jordan, the guard
- 12:13Speaker 2: out of Ohio State, who's a veteran. He started a
- 12:15Speaker 2: number of games, so that gives you a little bit
- 12:17Speaker 2: of a veteran presence to pair with Fred Johnson.
- 12:20Speaker 1: But Michael Jordan's going to have to make the team and.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Because of that, it's it's hugely important that this offensive
- 12:29Speaker 2: line stays healthy because that's going to be the key
- 12:32Speaker 2: to their to their success.
- 12:34Speaker 1: The third and final offensive storyline on.
- 12:36Speaker 2: My list would be how will the Eagles go about
- 12:41Speaker 2: replacing the production lost when.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Aj Brown was traded to the New England Patriots.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Davonte Smith stands to benefit the most clearly as the
- 12:50Speaker 2: Eagles top receiving option.
- 12:52Speaker 1: The passing game now runs through him and Dallas Goddard.
- 12:56Speaker 2: But with Davonte Smith, you've already seen what he can
- 12:59Speaker 2: do when he's in the top spot. He's been a
- 13:02Speaker 2: number one receiver before. As a rookie, he had nine
- 13:04Speaker 2: hundred and sixteen receiving yards. He's a three level threat.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I believe that this new offense with Sean Mannion and
- 13:10Speaker 2: passing game coordinator Josh Grizzard, they're going to craft a
- 13:15Speaker 2: passing game that should create more should evoke more creativity.
- 13:23Speaker 2: You're gonna see some more advanced route concepts that should
- 13:26Speaker 2: help with spacing, which will be interegal for someone like
- 13:30Speaker 2: Devonte Smith, getting him on the move a little bit more,
- 13:33Speaker 2: and things like that, because last year's offense when it
- 13:35Speaker 2: came to the passing game, was very compressed a lot
- 13:37Speaker 2: of hitch routes and things of that nature.
- 13:40Speaker 1: But this year I could see them finding creative.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Ways to get DeVante Smith on the move, lining him
- 13:45Speaker 2: up in different spots. So I don't have any questions
- 13:48Speaker 2: about the Eagles top receiver Davonte Smith. I do have questions.
- 13:54Speaker 1: As to how quickly someone like makay.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Lemon absorbs the offense and can become a high level
- 14:01Speaker 2: slot receiver. Early I have been pollish on the pick
- 14:04Speaker 2: because I really like the player coming out to USC.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But when you're talking about a collective group.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Here that's going to have to account for the loss
- 14:12Speaker 2: of production from someone like aj Brown, you need that
- 14:16Speaker 2: player to be able to step in and help you
- 14:18Speaker 2: almost immediately, and I believe that he fits in with
- 14:22Speaker 2: this scheme and being able to be that interior receiver
- 14:25Speaker 2: who was a razor sharp route runner, can attack the
- 14:28Speaker 2: catch point. He's good after the catch, So you like
- 14:30Speaker 2: the ability to move the chains and keep the offense
- 14:33Speaker 2: on schedule, which in a West Coast offense is crucial.
- 14:37Speaker 1: But he's a rookie, so anything.
- 14:40Speaker 2: You're anything you're assuming he's going to do as a
- 14:43Speaker 2: rookie is largely a projection. The other projection would be
- 14:47Speaker 2: the Don Tavian Wicks, and I view him as the
- 14:49Speaker 2: X factor in this passing game because he's never had
- 14:53Speaker 2: more than thirty nine perceptions in the season. The Eagles
- 14:56Speaker 2: are committing to him, they traded for him, and he's
- 14:59Speaker 2: making a decent amount this season, but he's been a
- 15:03Speaker 2: part time player with the Green Bay Packers, and so
- 15:07Speaker 2: now he's stepping into a situation in Philadelphia where he
- 15:10Speaker 2: has to undertake a far more prominent role and be
- 15:13Speaker 2: the Eagles big bodied receiver, be that AJ Brown. From
- 15:18Speaker 2: a frame perspective, he can't. No one's going to replace
- 15:22Speaker 2: AJ Brown. You simply can't do that. AJ Brown is
- 15:24Speaker 2: one of the best receivers in the NFL, But Don
- 15:26Speaker 2: tavi and Wicks is going to have to be that
- 15:28Speaker 2: contested catch guy. He's going to have to be that
- 15:32Speaker 2: perimeter receiver who wins those fifty to fifty balls and
- 15:36Speaker 2: creates yards after the catch. Can work the red zone
- 15:39Speaker 2: a little bit. He's a short intermediate receiver. He knows
- 15:42Speaker 2: how to separate, and that's a very enticing characteristic that
- 15:49Speaker 2: he has and probably his most prominent. But until you
- 15:55Speaker 2: see it play out over the full course of the
- 15:57Speaker 2: season or even consistent period the early state, let's say
- 16:02Speaker 2: the first month or two, it's hard to right now
- 16:06Speaker 2: go into it and say, yeah, he's gonna have fifty
- 16:08Speaker 2: five catches and he's a you know, now that he's
- 16:11Speaker 2: in this offense with this quarterback and this offensive coordinator,
- 16:14Speaker 2: he's gonna have fifty five catches, no problem, and answer
- 16:17Speaker 2: whatever questions the Eagles have with the passing game and
- 16:21Speaker 2: compliment DeVante Smith ideally compliment the kayle Lemon. Now, we
- 16:25Speaker 2: have to see it first, and I think that it's
- 16:29Speaker 2: fair to have the wide receiver group as a storyline,
- 16:33Speaker 2: and that's something I'll certainly be looking to watch.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough, parking, traffic,
- 16:39Speaker 3: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
- 16:42Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 16:46Speaker 3: the dispensary for sports fans just minutes outside of Philly,
- 16:50Speaker 3: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,
- 16:53Speaker 3: no hassle, no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Camden Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 17:02Speaker 3: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you
- 17:05Speaker 3: walk in. Plus they carry only the best quality cannabis
- 17:09Speaker 3: at the fairest prices, so whether you're stocking up for
- 17:12Speaker 3: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a big win,
- 17:16Speaker 3: you know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying. They
- 17:20Speaker 3: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 17:24Speaker 3: service members, and healthcare pros. Caned Inn Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 17:30Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 17:33Speaker 3: one and up.
- 17:34Speaker 2: The Eagles have done a really good job this offseason
- 17:37Speaker 2: assembling a receiving corps that has different body types, different skill.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Sets, and that should give them a lot more balance
- 17:46Speaker 1: and optionality.
- 17:46Speaker 2: But you have to see it before you can make
- 17:49Speaker 2: any sort of determinations.
- 17:51Speaker 1: But one thing is certain. I have no questions about
- 17:54Speaker 1: Devonte Smith being.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Able to take that top take to that top spot
- 17:58Speaker 2: and really thrive because he's made significant strides every season
- 18:02Speaker 2: and just a polished product, one of the best route
- 18:05Speaker 2: runners at his position, So that's.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Kind of the way that I see it. Then you
- 18:10Speaker 1: have Hollywood Brown, who is a.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Deep threat in theory, but he hasn't really been deployed
- 18:17Speaker 2: as such in his career in Philadelphia.
- 18:19Speaker 1: That could change.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts throws a really nice deep ball, and Hollywood
- 18:24Speaker 2: Brown has that skill set that sets him apart from
- 18:27Speaker 2: some of the other players, and so when he's on
- 18:29Speaker 2: the field, you'd like to see the Eagles send him deep,
- 18:32Speaker 2: stretch the defense, create spacing, and free up teammates.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Even if he's not getting the football.
- 18:38Speaker 2: So there's a lot of intrigue with this group, but
- 18:41Speaker 2: there's also a lot of questions aside from Devonte Smith.
- 18:44Speaker 2: So the storyline for me, the final one would be
- 18:47Speaker 2: how do the Eagles go about replacing the production of
- 18:52Speaker 2: aj Brown with this wide receiving corps. So those are
