- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to your pop now past it from the future.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You know what you do show as out of life,
- 0:14Speaker 1: so disrespectful leg hippop and say this today, let's get
- 0:21Speaker 1: right into the business. Wherever you listen to podcasting audio form,
- 0:25Speaker 1: but especially right here on YouTube, also broadcasting on Facebook,
- 0:31Speaker 1: also broadcasting on Instagram. Yeah, check it out. But subscribe
- 0:38Speaker 1: to the podcast right here on YouTube. Excuse me. We
- 0:42Speaker 1: are on the road to ten thousand subscribers, because why not,
- 0:47Speaker 1: why not go for it? You know what I'm saying.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Shout out to everybody who's news who have subscribe, whether
- 0:53Speaker 1: you come here through the shorts that I post here
- 0:57Speaker 1: on YouTube, or you can to the podcast through the
- 1:01Speaker 1: audio podcasts, or maybe you saw a thumbnail, or maybe
- 1:05Speaker 1: you saw a topic about hip hop. So what I
- 1:09Speaker 1: wanted to do today is something a little bit more
- 1:11Speaker 1: free form audience engagement. I know you're trying to make
- 1:16Speaker 1: that a bad thing. It is not. It's been a
- 1:20Speaker 1: part of radio and television for years. You're supposed to
- 1:24Speaker 1: do it when you are a creator of content. So
- 1:30Speaker 1: what I wanted to talk about today and I wanted
- 1:32Speaker 1: to share with some of y'all, is the fact that
- 1:36Speaker 1: this is for the music lovers. This is for the
- 1:38Speaker 1: music fans out there, those who cherish their CDs when
- 1:42Speaker 1: they had it, collect vinyl, have a library, even if
- 1:47Speaker 1: it's a digital library of music that some would call extensive. Right,
- 1:53Speaker 1: maybe you have some joints in your collection that are
- 1:56Speaker 1: hard to find, records and stuff like that, just different
- 2:01Speaker 1: things like that, you know, honestly, because there's a thing
- 2:06Speaker 1: that some of us music lovers like to do, like myself,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and maybe it's just myself, I don't know, but I
- 2:13Speaker 1: like to go back and listen to older music, right, Like,
- 2:17Speaker 1: whether it's albums, it don't matter if it was last year,
- 2:21Speaker 1: ten years ago, twenty years ago, before I was born,
- 2:25Speaker 1: wherever it may be. Now, we're gonna keep it hip
- 2:27Speaker 1: hop because this is a hip hop podcast. This is
- 2:31Speaker 1: a hip hop podcast. Just want to let y'all know
- 2:33Speaker 1: that we want to keep it hip hop for this regard.
- 2:36Speaker 1: But as I scroll, because you're looking at my Apple
- 2:40Speaker 1: Music collection, I know it just says me, But I
- 2:44Speaker 1: was playing some of my music, but you won't see
- 2:47Speaker 1: me scroll past a number of albums that you're gonna
- 2:50Speaker 1: be like, Hey, that's not hip hop? Is that Kit Cutting?
- 2:54Speaker 1: Is that Diddy? Is that. I don't know. I was
- 3:00Speaker 1: trying to think of a name, but then I started
- 3:02Speaker 1: thinking of like movie stars and shit, is that Prince?
- 3:05Speaker 1: Is that? Whoever? Right, Jimmy Hendrix, whoever? But we're going
- 3:09Speaker 1: to talk about hip hop because one of the things
- 3:11Speaker 1: that I know for me as a hip hop head,
- 3:14Speaker 1: that I like to do. You know, I don't listen
- 3:17Speaker 1: to our album and then dip out. I basically love
- 3:22Speaker 1: to go back to those albums that I loved and
- 3:25Speaker 1: maybe haven't heard in a while. And one of the
- 3:27Speaker 1: things that made me come up with this as a
- 3:30Speaker 1: topic is the fact that, honestly, a lot of people
- 3:37Speaker 1: will argue every day, all day on social media about
- 3:42Speaker 1: the same albums and artists from the pats And sometimes
- 3:47Speaker 1: when people do things like you know that new gn
- 3:52Speaker 1: X album, when's the last time you heard it? You
- 3:54Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? Or that new Snoop album, when's
- 3:57Speaker 1: the last time you listen to that? Was it really great?
- 4:01Speaker 1: And the thing with me is what when was the
- 4:03Speaker 1: last time I'd listened to? It? Takes a nation of
- 4:05Speaker 1: millions in its entirety, it's a long time ago. Bro. Now,
- 4:12Speaker 1: It's not to say that I don't sometimes go back.
- 4:15Speaker 1: But again, even classics I'm not going to all the time,
- 4:18Speaker 1: but I can accept that it's a classic, you feel me.
- 4:23Speaker 1: So what I'm gonna do is, I'm gonna just go
- 4:25Speaker 1: through a couple of joints I have listening. Now, what
- 4:30Speaker 1: is the best way to do this, I guess so
- 4:33Speaker 1: you can see album for him first and foremost. Shout
- 4:37Speaker 1: out to everybody tuning in now. Tron says, should have
- 4:42Speaker 1: kept my cassettes. Still got the vinyl and CDs though.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I kept my cassettes, but it was only because when
- 4:52Speaker 1: I bought a house, it was just in a box
- 4:54Speaker 1: and it went in a garage and through two houses
- 4:58Speaker 1: that I had, one in Baltimore and here. I honestly
- 5:02Speaker 1: didn't even touch them joints until Viidel had a resurgence
- 5:06Speaker 1: and I wound up buying a record player that just
- 5:09Speaker 1: so happened to have a cassette player. So I was like, oh, well,
- 5:13Speaker 1: let me go digging them cassettes. And then when I
- 5:15Speaker 1: saw what I had. You know, if you watch this
- 5:18Speaker 1: podcast in the past, when I was like in my
- 5:20Speaker 1: garage aka the Dungeons of Rap, I had some of
- 5:24Speaker 1: the album to sets behind me. Actually they're right there,
- 5:27Speaker 1: but you can't really see them. If you look see
- 5:29Speaker 1: what my finger point right there? A couple of them
- 5:32Speaker 1: are right there. See these. Though I got rid of
- 5:36Speaker 1: CDs a while ago, I ain't gonna lie. At some point,
- 5:41Speaker 1: way before the music streaming streaming services came about, it
- 5:45Speaker 1: was really during the iPod and MP three era where
- 5:50Speaker 1: I was like, damn, imagine if I could walk around
- 5:53Speaker 1: with a device that has my entire music collection. Previously,
- 5:59Speaker 1: it used to to be what album am I taking
- 6:02Speaker 1: with me when I go to work or I go
- 6:04Speaker 1: to school and stuff like that. But then what you know,
- 6:07Speaker 1: when it came to that, yo, it was like, you
- 6:10Speaker 1: mean to tell me I can have my entire library here.
- 6:13Speaker 1: So my CDs got liquidated, okay, but but not all
- 6:20Speaker 1: of them. There was some CDs where I was like,
- 6:24Speaker 1: I need to keep this because this is the original
- 6:27Speaker 1: Illmatic CD I bought ninety four. This is the original
- 6:32Speaker 1: Reasonable Doubt with the gun on the CD. You know
- 6:35Speaker 1: what I'm talking, real heads, No, not the death Jam release,
- 6:38Speaker 1: the one Reasonable Doubt where it's like the little whatever.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I ain't in a hood like that. I don't know
- 6:44Speaker 1: what the name of the gun is, but you know
- 6:46Speaker 1: what I'm talking about, you know, keeping CDs like that.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But when it came to my CD rack, sold all
- 6:55Speaker 1: them joints, man, I ain't gonna lie sold all of them.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I wrote a post about it because of you know,
- 7:02Speaker 1: it was the blog error at the Times, so that
- 7:06Speaker 1: was that, Yince, what up? Man? I don't know what
- 7:10Speaker 1: that means. So I'm just gonna keep it moving. Okay,
- 7:14Speaker 1: what do you say? Nel Trance says, I usually go
- 7:17Speaker 1: back to Death Certificate or at Aliens, definitely resist revisit
- 7:22Speaker 1: a truck called Quest. What else you said? I go
- 7:26Speaker 1: back to BEDP by all means necessary for sure. Do
- 7:31Speaker 1: you go back to that more than A Criminal Minded
- 7:36Speaker 1: or any one of his other albums? Let me know,
- 7:38Speaker 1: because that's interesting. There's a lot of people again who
- 7:42Speaker 1: will talk about classic albums, but the album that we
- 7:48Speaker 1: typically go back to is like something else, right, Like
- 7:50Speaker 1: I almost never go and listen to Illmatic in its entirety,
- 7:57Speaker 1: but I'll do that for it was written and I
- 7:59Speaker 1: think that may have something to do where about where
- 8:03Speaker 1: I was at that point in time in my life,
- 8:07Speaker 1: which was what was at ninety six, so I was
- 8:10Speaker 1: like in college. It was my second year of college.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Matter of fact, it was the summer of me being
- 8:16Speaker 1: a business major at Morgan State University and having a
- 8:23Speaker 1: job slash internship at Chase Manhattan Bank, not the bank,
- 8:27Speaker 1: but like the corporate joint, because you know, I'm a
- 8:30Speaker 1: business major. I'm trying to trying to get it going.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And this was before obviously the situation with the World
- 8:37Speaker 1: Trade Center the Twin Towers. But I was working like
- 8:40Speaker 1: right there, and I remember I bought it was written
- 8:43Speaker 1: at a record store right down there, and I was
- 8:46Speaker 1: listening to that reasonable Doubt tribes what was the name
- 8:51Speaker 1: of the tribe joint beach ROMs in life had dropped
- 8:54Speaker 1: like I was just buying music, you know, because they
- 8:57Speaker 1: were paying me and they wouldn't really giving me no work.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Me not keep it U up hunting like that. Let
- 9:03Speaker 1: me see what yent says. Lost all vinyl to Katrina
- 9:08Speaker 1: Damn still have all my cassettes, don't have many CDs, man,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I think losing all the vinyl probably hurts more, at
- 9:16Speaker 1: least to me, like especially since vinyl was kind of
- 9:20Speaker 1: made a comeback, and there's just something about the sound
- 9:25Speaker 1: on vinyl, especially with particular records, Like when I bought
- 9:29Speaker 1: Songs in the Key of Life on vinyl, and you know,
- 9:32Speaker 1: I've had it digitally, I had it on CD, but
- 9:35Speaker 1: when I played it on vinyl, I was like, damn,
- 9:37Speaker 1: this is like this old school man sniffer eight off
- 9:42Speaker 1: the table. I'm joking, I'm joking. I've never done drugs.
- 9:48Speaker 1: New Tron says, yes I do. I wasn't outside when
- 9:52Speaker 1: Criminal Minded dropped, so when I did go back, by
- 9:57Speaker 1: all means necessarily stuck with me even though I did
- 10:00Speaker 1: Criminal Minded. That's dope, that's dope. I could dig that.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Man again, it's it's situational when it comes to music
- 10:08Speaker 1: in general. So what I'm gonna do right now? Oh
- 10:14Speaker 1: hold up, this is real quick against what you say.
- 10:16Speaker 1: It took a long time to get over that loss
- 10:18Speaker 1: for sure that I'm gonna go to one with most
- 10:24Speaker 1: people know, right and no Trounce just said it. Hold up,
- 10:28Speaker 1: I ain't term keyboard on y'all. Hold up. My kids
- 10:32Speaker 1: told me I'd be moving too slow, you know, Like, hey,
- 10:34Speaker 1: look man, I don't do this all the time, Like yeah, okay, yes,
- 10:40Speaker 1: if you don't know, this is hands down my favorite
- 10:45Speaker 1: album of all time, so of course it is a
- 10:49Speaker 1: go to or me at least twice a year. Sometimes
- 10:54Speaker 1: it might be a record of two here and there.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I bumped, like, yo, I ain't hear that joint a
- 10:58Speaker 1: long time. But when you talk about an album that
- 11:03Speaker 1: I never get tired of that I could literally again
- 11:08Speaker 1: twice a year go back and just play this joint
- 11:13Speaker 1: like I'm hearing it for the very first time, and
- 11:16Speaker 1: it's just such a dope album. Because again we're talking
- 11:20Speaker 1: about times in our lives and when albums and connected
- 11:25Speaker 1: with us. You know, at that time and in nineteen
- 11:27Speaker 1: ninety one, gonna get my gun to shoot, hold my bag,
- 11:33Speaker 1: you know, the lyrics in my head. But as soon
- 11:34Speaker 1: as I see the album couple, I'm like, but in
- 11:38Speaker 1: ninety one, and I wrote an article about this on Substack.
- 11:43Speaker 1: This was around the time my mother was like, I'm
- 11:46Speaker 1: going to give you kids allowance, and we like what,
- 11:49Speaker 1: we can't even get snacks from the bold dagga and
- 11:53Speaker 1: you're gonna give us allowance. You know, I had to question, like,
- 11:56Speaker 1: what is my mother doing? She's selling drugs down something
- 12:00Speaker 1: I didn't know. But all I know is that when
- 12:03Speaker 1: it came to that allowance, I was going to get
- 12:08Speaker 1: to music and if I saved up enough, I would
- 12:11Speaker 1: probably get a game, you know, a video game or whatever.
- 12:14Speaker 1: But this, that Certificate was like the second album I
- 12:18Speaker 1: purchased with my money, with my allowance. And I and again,
- 12:24Speaker 1: this is what you can read my article on substack,
- 12:26Speaker 1: And when I post this video, I put a link
- 12:29Speaker 1: to my substack in there because I wrote exactly this
- 12:32Speaker 1: story I'm telling you. But I remember the first time
- 12:36Speaker 1: my mother gave me allowance and I was going to
- 12:40Speaker 1: the record store. She was like, don't buy no music
- 12:44Speaker 1: with no cuss words in them. And I was like,
- 12:48Speaker 1: that's exactly what I'm about to do. And the good
- 12:54Speaker 1: thing for me was my mother didn't pay attention to
- 12:57Speaker 1: the parental advisory sticker that says explicit lyrics right on
- 13:03Speaker 1: the damn cover, because she was like, let me see
- 13:05Speaker 1: what you got, and I was I was scared to tell.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I was like, and she was like, oh, what's this about.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I'm like, Oh, he's doing with some righteous you know, brothers,
- 13:15Speaker 1: get together, you know, form a bond, and and then
- 13:20Speaker 1: I was off to my room to listen. Okay, but yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 1: Death Certificate All Time Classic arguably the best album in
- 13:28Speaker 1: Ice Cubes catalog. Some will say different. Let's go to
- 13:33Speaker 1: a couple of comments before I go to the next joint. Definitely,
- 13:39Speaker 1: if you're watching, don't be afraid to leave your comments
- 13:42Speaker 1: in a comments section when it comes to your go
- 13:45Speaker 1: to music and you can put some R and B.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I won't throw you out the window. Nothing like that.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Hold on, let me see, let's allowance. Yen says, is
- 13:58Speaker 1: it shown? Ron pays mechanis old brother man, tronis criminal minded.
- 14:02Speaker 1: So many mm hmm. So on a regular you go
- 14:06Speaker 1: back to these joints hm nel. Tron says a stick
- 14:15Speaker 1: of work against those who thought they would hinder the kids. Absolutely, absolutely,
- 14:22Speaker 1: because when the kids hit the record store and they
- 14:24Speaker 1: saw that parental advisory, they gonna be shooting and cussing
- 14:28Speaker 1: and killing on this album right here. We was like, oh,
- 14:32Speaker 1: excuse me, sorry, I'd like to buy this one. Like
- 14:35Speaker 1: now you know what I'm saying. All right, So here's
- 14:40Speaker 1: another one. And again, if you watch my podcast, you
- 14:44Speaker 1: already know what I'm about to type. All you gotta
- 14:47Speaker 1: do is see one word. Hold up, we're not doing
- 14:49Speaker 1: Apple music though, we're doing my stuff. Okay, that's the problem.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Do rag Dynasty Okay to play on the music and
- 14:59Speaker 1: get them brothers any money? Okay, three sixty waves do
- 15:04Speaker 1: Rag Dynasty twoenty and twelve. I don't know if you've
- 15:08Speaker 1: ever even heard of this album. I have a million
- 15:13Speaker 1: times over and over this album for those who may
- 15:16Speaker 1: be wondering what the hell is that and what kind
- 15:19Speaker 1: of photo shot with Kareem with the due Rag going
- 15:21Speaker 1: blah blah blah. First of all, I thought it was ill,
- 15:24Speaker 1: but second of all it since y'all love them and
- 15:28Speaker 1: know them now Produced by Alchemists, this album is a
- 15:36Speaker 1: boombap head's dream, like you know the dude, you know,
- 15:39Speaker 1: your friend or whatever, where he like nod his head
- 15:42Speaker 1: to sleep listening to the beats. This is the kind
- 15:47Speaker 1: of music and they say boom bap if you don't
- 15:48Speaker 1: even know what boombap is, this is what it sounds
- 15:51Speaker 1: like like this. I didn't expect this. I put it
- 15:55Speaker 1: this way. I didn't expect to like this that much.
- 15:59Speaker 1: So with my podcast, I tend to listen to albums
- 16:03Speaker 1: that you know obviously are popular, or I see a
- 16:08Speaker 1: little chatter about it on social media, or maybe I'm
- 16:12Speaker 1: seeing a ton of like underground hip hop sites talking
- 16:16Speaker 1: about and reviewing it. So I'll go and give you know,
- 16:20Speaker 1: those albums a listen and I'm like, okay, cool. You
- 16:22Speaker 1: know Alchemists on beats, I know some of the rappers, Oh,
- 16:25Speaker 1: Prodigies on here, you know. So it was one of
- 16:28Speaker 1: those things where I was just gonna listen and I
- 16:30Speaker 1: was in the gym and I was like, this joint
- 16:35Speaker 1: kind of crazy, you know what I'm saying. I was
- 16:37Speaker 1: in there like I think, I kind of like this joint,
- 16:42Speaker 1: and all I did was run it over and over
- 16:45Speaker 1: and over again, to the point where I feel like,
- 16:49Speaker 1: at least once a year at least sometimes I forget.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Somebody said, yeah, that dude rag Dynasty, and that said
- 16:58Speaker 1: that means, oh yeah, I didn't fill my quota, you
- 17:01Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, So do rag Dynasy, especially the Joint,
- 17:06Speaker 1: like all of them. Well, I ain't gonna say all
- 17:09Speaker 1: the tracks. The majority of the tracks in here are five, right,
- 17:14Speaker 1: So this is the solid album for the most part.
- 17:17Speaker 1: But the Prodigies, Joint, fish Meat, that beat, like, that's
- 17:24Speaker 1: the part I kind of don't get about people who
- 17:28Speaker 1: love Alchemists now in a way because the beats don't
- 17:34Speaker 1: necessarily sound like these, And I know some of it
- 17:38Speaker 1: is drumless. I know people like that or whatever, but
- 17:41Speaker 1: and I'm not mad at him for doing it, to
- 17:42Speaker 1: be honest, but du Rag Dynasty's three sixty Waves is
- 17:48Speaker 1: it is prime alchemists, trust me, prime alchemists. Let's do
- 17:54Speaker 1: a little roulette with some of this, just to make
- 17:58Speaker 1: it interesting. This is a zip and see because I
- 18:03Speaker 1: think there is This might be another one for me.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Since we talked about Prodigy, Prodigy and Alchemist Albert Einstein
- 18:13Speaker 1: twenty thirteen, I might like it a little bit more
- 18:18Speaker 1: than H and I C. I'm not gonna hold you.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I might. I think lyrically Prodigy is better on H
- 18:27Speaker 1: and I C. But as far as collaborations, and I
- 18:31Speaker 1: felt like this was the project where I felt like
- 18:34Speaker 1: lyrically Prodigy was somewhat back to form. But I love
- 18:41Speaker 1: this joint. Let's go to some of the comments real quick.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Let's see, oh ish due rag dynasy Yins, did you
- 18:55Speaker 1: put me on this album? Or Vegas? Did you mention
- 18:57Speaker 1: this apartment? Either way, I know I talk about it
- 19:03Speaker 1: all the time. Yen says, three sixty Waves is dope?
- 19:10Speaker 1: What is this? So? Book Book of Human Language is
- 19:16Speaker 1: a go to? Okay? Now, Tron What the hell is that?
- 19:20Speaker 1: I do not know? Maybe I do, but that is
- 19:27Speaker 1: definitely under the underground for me for right now, because
- 19:31Speaker 1: I don't have the greatest memory. So you might say, nah,
- 19:34Speaker 1: it was the joint you know, doctor Dre did the book,
- 19:37Speaker 1: and I might be like, all right, okay, I got
- 19:40Speaker 1: it now ODB returned to the thirty six. You know
- 19:46Speaker 1: what when that album dropped. Let's just say I was
- 19:51Speaker 1: entertained by it, but I almost never go back to it.
- 19:56Speaker 1: I'll listen to Shimmy Shimi, y'all, I listen to h
- 20:00Speaker 1: Brooklyn Zoo, but I almost never go back to it
- 20:04Speaker 1: because there was a point in time when I was
- 20:06Speaker 1: listening to that album where I was like, Okay, he
- 20:09Speaker 1: playing too much what my dog? He playing too much Olo?
- 20:17Speaker 1: No Trump saying Ron were for Oh yeah, that's why
- 20:21Speaker 1: I don't know. Nobody knows about the mixcept Nick. Yeah,
- 20:24Speaker 1: because Nick has every album. Trust me, Literally, when I
- 20:28Speaker 1: know I don't have a certain album, like yo, Nick,
- 20:30Speaker 1: can you send me you know Frankenstein and the Fellowship
- 20:33Speaker 1: of Free Styling And He'll be like, ay, I got you?
- 20:37Speaker 1: Who is that? All right? What's another one? To stay
- 20:42Speaker 1: on topic? Surprisingly for some people who don't know. This
- 20:47Speaker 1: is a go to for me for time to time.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Onyx sophomore album, All We Got Is Us Onyx is
- 20:57Speaker 1: pretty slept on in a hip hop game. Let me
- 20:59Speaker 1: tell you a lot of people only think about the
- 21:01Speaker 1: ball heads in that first album, but they gonna realize
- 21:05Speaker 1: that Honest had four straight albums that were bangers all
- 21:10Speaker 1: the way up to what ninety eight. I think Shut
- 21:12Speaker 1: Them Down was to I think that was what it
- 21:14Speaker 1: was called, was the fourth album, and I think it
- 21:18Speaker 1: dropped in ninety eight and they had the track with
- 21:20Speaker 1: DMX on it. But their sophomore release, All We Got
- 21:25Speaker 1: Is Us is crazy beats ROMs Tom. This was ninety five,
- 21:33Speaker 1: so I was like a freshman at college and I
- 21:37Speaker 1: remember we was playing this joint like crazy last Days,
- 21:41Speaker 1: that last Day's beat that might be one of the
- 21:47Speaker 1: that might be one of the greatest beats in hip
- 21:51Speaker 1: hop all time, not the because I know some of
- 21:55Speaker 1: these people like you know List and stuff like that. Alway,
- 21:58Speaker 1: is it better than no? I didn't say that, but yeah, Honxt,
- 22:04Speaker 1: All We Got is Us is definitely one of my
- 22:05Speaker 1: go tos. Let's see, we could spend that well real
- 22:08Speaker 1: quick we got anything here that Bob Marley is for sure?
- 22:15Speaker 1: What else we got obviously Midnight Maradas. Now I go
- 22:24Speaker 1: back and forth between Low End Theory and Midnight Maradas
- 22:28Speaker 1: as far as like running it back. But for years
- 22:31Speaker 1: I used to listen to Low in Theory like religiously
- 22:34Speaker 1: because it's my favorite Tribe album. So in a lot
- 22:37Speaker 1: of ways, I was like neglecting Midnight Maradas. And one day,
- 22:41Speaker 1: you know, I just put it on, like, let me
- 22:43Speaker 1: listen to this. I haven't heard it in years, and
- 22:45Speaker 1: I played that joint and I just went on a
- 22:47Speaker 1: role of constantly playing it because you just forget, you know,
- 22:51Speaker 1: albums are classics. Nostalgia tells you automatically, this album is great,
- 22:57Speaker 1: it's flawless, it's a class is all these things. But
- 23:02Speaker 1: half the time you haven't even gone back to listen
- 23:04Speaker 1: to him. And when I go back to this album,
- 23:07Speaker 1: no line like especially Award Tour. A Ward Tour just
- 23:11Speaker 1: feels good when you hear it. Man, Like, I just
- 23:14Speaker 1: love that record. But you can't say lyrics to go
- 23:19Speaker 1: greatest Tribe joint all time? Yeah, what he did with
- 23:23Speaker 1: that mini rip it in, Oh my god. I remember
- 23:27Speaker 1: being on a bus when I bought this joint and
- 23:29Speaker 1: they got to that song and I was just listening.
- 23:33Speaker 1: It was almost as you know how you kind of
- 23:35Speaker 1: go into I ain't gonna say nothing crazy, but you
- 23:39Speaker 1: start daydreaming and you're still listening to the music. You're
- 23:43Speaker 1: looking out the window of the bus, not really looking
- 23:46Speaker 1: at anything specifically, and I just remember thinking, like, damn,
- 23:50Speaker 1: this is how hip hop albums should be, because it was.
- 23:54Speaker 1: It was just so dope. And this was like nineteen
- 23:56Speaker 1: ninety three. I know some people, you know, especially y'all
- 24:00Speaker 1: on social media, you know you bought every album. You know,
- 24:03Speaker 1: you was a grown man when it came out also,
- 24:06Speaker 1: so you had a different reflection of it. It was
- 24:08Speaker 1: ninety three, dog, I was a kid, Okay. It was
- 24:12Speaker 1: making an impression on me, and I was happy to
- 24:14Speaker 1: have it with my allowance. I probably spent my whole
- 24:17Speaker 1: allowance on it. But I'm saying nel Strown, Hell yeah,
- 24:22Speaker 1: Midnight Marauders. I actually loved songs of people's instinctive travels. Yeah,
- 24:27Speaker 1: you and my brother, because every time you bring it
- 24:29Speaker 1: up to me, I to be like, I don't care
- 24:32Speaker 1: about that one. I just don't. But they don't get it.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Towards there's a couple of joints off of it, especially
- 24:42Speaker 1: some of the remixes are crazy on there. All right,
- 24:46Speaker 1: well his one, I mean heads no, but I go
- 24:55Speaker 1: back to it frequently. Not because he came out with
- 25:00Speaker 1: a part two, which I thought was fine. The Part
- 25:02Speaker 1: two was fine, but because again nineteen ninety six, this dropped.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Red Man was like my favorite rapper at the time,
- 25:12Speaker 1: and it was unbelievable. It has a ton of skits,
- 25:16Speaker 1: but back then that was just how hip hop was,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and redmn skits were funny. They worked with the music,
- 25:24Speaker 1: they worked with his personality. Yeah, I mean I love
- 25:29Speaker 1: that album for sure. All right, what's another one I
- 25:33Speaker 1: could go to real quick, let's see and they exists here,
- 25:37Speaker 1: but the group chat will appreciate that one. Killer Priest
- 25:43Speaker 1: Black August. Okay, what I like about this? He not
- 25:48Speaker 1: talking none of that. The pyramids collapse on top of
- 25:51Speaker 1: the sun and then begun it like, no, we don't
- 25:54Speaker 1: know what you're talking about. Okay, this is the Killer
- 25:57Speaker 1: Priest who was from Brooklyn, who just so happens to spit. Yes,
- 26:03Speaker 1: got knowledge youself, but it doesn't dominate the tracks. This
- 26:08Speaker 1: joint was released in two thousand and three, and honestly,
- 26:10Speaker 1: at the time, I slept on it big time because
- 26:14Speaker 1: I liked Killer Priest. I had heavy mental But after
- 26:20Speaker 1: a while I kind of lost track of his stuff
- 26:22Speaker 1: and somebody told me, like, naw, he released some joints,
- 26:25Speaker 1: and I was like, yeah, Bud, is he ho tep rapping?
- 26:29Speaker 1: Because you know, like some of that I could Some
- 26:34Speaker 1: of it I could rock with. But when you start
- 26:35Speaker 1: going too far, like I was talking to a tree
- 26:37Speaker 1: one day, then I'm out. I'm out because I don't
- 26:41Speaker 1: know what you're talking about. But this one Black August
- 26:45Speaker 1: two thousand and three, boom back, Okay, straight up, boom back.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Let me see what's another one? Oh? Hello? Hold up?
- 26:57Speaker 1: I don't This ain't a go to, but I take
- 27:01Speaker 1: every chance I can to tell people Sticky Fingers the
- 27:07Speaker 1: year two thousand. Sticky Fingers probably paused now right saying
- 27:12Speaker 1: his name. Black Trash, the Autobiography of Kurt Jones. This
- 27:18Speaker 1: is one of the greatest hip hop concept albums of
- 27:23Speaker 1: all time. I'm not lying to you. I stayed away
- 27:28Speaker 1: from listening to this. The Little Homies was like, yo,
- 27:32Speaker 1: you have to. I just take some time and just
- 27:36Speaker 1: listen to it. Because I was dismissive, like, who's listening
- 27:40Speaker 1: to Sticky Fingers? In two thousand, ONYX dropped him what
- 27:44Speaker 1: ninety three? I don't want to hear this. Then I
- 27:49Speaker 1: heard a single. I think the single was to join
- 27:53Speaker 1: What's it come on? Yeah? I heard a single and
- 27:56Speaker 1: then I heard another song. I think I heard My
- 27:58Speaker 1: Dogs is my Boons? And I was like, well, the
- 28:01Speaker 1: songs aren't whack, that's for sure. But when I listened
- 28:04Speaker 1: to the album, it was just great from a storytelling standpoint,
- 28:08Speaker 1: because he literally made an album where he told the story.
- 28:13Speaker 1: A lot of rappers will say yeah, story blah blah blah,
- 28:16Speaker 1: but no Shade. One of my favorite rappers, ghost Face,
- 28:21Speaker 1: did that, and it was disjointed because I had trouble
- 28:24Speaker 1: following based off lyrics and stuff like that. He wound
- 28:28Speaker 1: up on a certain album getting it together, but Sticky
- 28:32Speaker 1: Skits led into the songs, which led it into Skits
- 28:36Speaker 1: was letting everything. The continuity was crazy and I kept thinking, Wow,
- 28:42Speaker 1: what kind of discipline you have to have in order
- 28:47Speaker 1: to make all these things work? And what was dope
- 28:50Speaker 1: was even the guest features like Ray kon Here who
- 28:53Speaker 1: Redman h This was a court like song, but it
- 28:58Speaker 1: was like a posse cut with Rod Digger on it.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Who else was here? Somebody else was on this joint.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I think eminem was on here. Yeah, what if I
- 29:11Speaker 1: was white? What if I was white? Like but everybody
- 29:14Speaker 1: played a character in the story. It wasn't just oh
- 29:17Speaker 1: I'm Redman, Oh I'm just Cannabis. No, Like I think
- 29:21Speaker 1: Redman was like the judge and Cannabis might have been
- 29:24Speaker 1: a lawyer. If you a hip hop head and you
- 29:30Speaker 1: just don't need hip hop to be one thing and
- 29:34Speaker 1: you want some variety and creativity, check this out. Follow
- 29:39Speaker 1: the lyrics, that's all you gotta do. Follow the lyrics.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Liking the song is just, you know, a bonus. Let's
- 29:46Speaker 1: go to some comments really quick. Hold up, didn't mean
- 29:51Speaker 1: to go to that, Yo, Muddy Waters. That's my favorite
- 29:54Speaker 1: Redman album. This gets much play throughout the year. I
- 29:59Speaker 1: feel you damn no pyramid emoji when you need it.
- 30:05Speaker 1: No whole tep talk on this album. Why ain't say
- 30:09Speaker 1: that it's there because it's killer priest. But if you
- 30:13Speaker 1: listen to some of his like more current music, it's
- 30:18Speaker 1: all whole tap except for one that dropped not that
- 30:21Speaker 1: long ago. I was like he's back, you know, so
- 30:24Speaker 1: let me see slept on in this Damn I gotta
- 30:27Speaker 1: do my homework. I guess you talk about the Sticky
- 30:29Speaker 1: Fingers joint. Yeah, Ad that Sticky Fingers album? Is that?
- 30:35Speaker 1: Hold up? This reminds me of the Prince Paul album
- 30:37Speaker 1: concept wise, yup, exact same thing, just a little bit
- 30:41Speaker 1: more hardcore because you know it's Sticky Fingers. But man,
- 30:46Speaker 1: I was sleeping hard and you know, the little homies
- 30:50Speaker 1: was like, you need to wake up? Okay, what else
- 30:55Speaker 1: we got here? Go to? You see, I got some
- 30:56Speaker 1: joints here. You already know Michael Jackson in here somewhere
- 31:01Speaker 1: his one. I go back to this album more than B.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I might like it, bet, And a lot of that
- 31:11Speaker 1: has to do with the fact that B was dope Commons.
- 31:14Speaker 1: B by the way, was dope because he had dropped
- 31:20Speaker 1: Electric Circus after dropping Light Water for Chocolate, which you know,
- 31:25Speaker 1: arguably is a classic, and it was dope and a
- 31:27Speaker 1: lot of j. Dillar stuff and Electric Circus just was
- 31:33Speaker 1: noted at the time, and people thought Common had changed,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and he fell off and then he came back with
- 31:38Speaker 1: Kanye with BE but it felt like, let's do some
- 31:43Speaker 1: songs to bring you back, So they did a couple
- 31:46Speaker 1: of songs. But Finding Forever from two thousand and seven
- 31:51Speaker 1: is like Kanye and Common making the album right, like
- 31:54Speaker 1: really taking their time with an album. So many dope
- 31:59Speaker 1: joints on here. Outside joint with Kanye West is crazy.
- 32:04Speaker 1: So far to go D'Angelo produced by Dyla, Like, this
- 32:09Speaker 1: album is pretty solid. How long is It's like fifty minutes,
- 32:14Speaker 1: I'm telling you, man, Like when you got them twelve
- 32:19Speaker 1: track maybe thirteen track albums and they don't take up
- 32:22Speaker 1: more than an hour of my time. This is the
- 32:27Speaker 1: albums I like to go back to, and I like
- 32:29Speaker 1: it because in a lot of ways, it wasn't like
- 32:34Speaker 1: I feel like Common at a certain point had an
- 32:37Speaker 1: agenda with his albums, you know what I'm saying. That's
- 32:40Speaker 1: what it felt like, Like not that you can't, but
- 32:43Speaker 1: like like he was forcing concepts and sometimes the songs
- 32:48Speaker 1: will mostly hit a miss. I felt like he was
- 32:51Speaker 1: comfortable here, you know what I'm saying. Like the first
- 32:54Speaker 1: time I heard One Day that all makes Sense, which
- 32:58Speaker 1: is another one of my go to sure I felt
- 33:01Speaker 1: like Common was just coming up with topics and just
- 33:05Speaker 1: going for it all the time. But at the end
- 33:09Speaker 1: of the day, yeah, finding forever. It was one of
- 33:12Speaker 1: my favorites, one of my go tos from common throughout
- 33:16Speaker 1: the year. What else we got? Spend the rule at
- 33:21Speaker 1: up real quick. She was here a couple of joints,
- 33:25Speaker 1: but not really any go tos for me. What else
- 33:29Speaker 1: we got and shout out to whatever? Some more recent
- 33:34Speaker 1: stuff up here? So oh yeah, because we go on
- 33:36Speaker 1: to recent. So let's go way back because since the
- 33:38Speaker 1: dates are here, let's go way back, not the dates
- 33:42Speaker 1: of release, just when I uploaded them. Joints, not hip hop,
- 33:46Speaker 1: but you already know. Okay, here's a goal to probably
- 33:53Speaker 1: the one Jay Electronica project I go back to on
- 33:58Speaker 1: a regular basis Star Wars ep J Electronica two thousand
- 34:05Speaker 1: and eleven before Exhibit see because some of you, like
- 34:10Speaker 1: you know, Jay Lennard, Jay Electronica, philosophers, you know, historians.
- 34:19Speaker 1: It begins for you with Exhibit C. Look, man, look
- 34:23Speaker 1: look at track Look at the goddamn track list, and
- 34:26Speaker 1: it's not here because guess what it wasn't out now
- 34:29Speaker 1: I know it says twenty eleven. That's probably wrong, okay,
- 34:33Speaker 1: because if you know iTunes, you know you put music
- 34:36Speaker 1: in there, and they've changed the album cover and everything,
- 34:40Speaker 1: so there's probably probably twenty eleven I fixed all of this,
- 34:44Speaker 1: but it definitely was earlier than that. But this was
- 34:47Speaker 1: the album where or not the album, but the EP
- 34:50Speaker 1: slash mixtape with Jay Electronica wrapped up a lot of
- 34:54Speaker 1: della beats. But the one that probably got him a
- 34:59Speaker 1: lot of notice is the last song Eternal Sunshine the pledge.
- 35:05Speaker 1: If you didn't know, Jay Electronica is also a producer.
- 35:08Speaker 1: And again I've told this story a thousand times, but
- 35:13Speaker 1: Jay Electronic not Jay Electronica Most Death. I went to
- 35:16Speaker 1: see Most Deaf at Carnegie Hall with Robert Glasper, and
- 35:20Speaker 1: again this is before Robert Glasper black music. This is
- 35:23Speaker 1: like early time. And I was really going because most
- 35:27Speaker 1: was going to be there, and I knew Robert Glasper
- 35:30Speaker 1: from the jazz world, but went there. You know, Most
- 35:35Speaker 1: surprised me because he was doing all types of other stuff.
- 35:38Speaker 1: You know, he was doing spoken word, he was singing.
- 35:40Speaker 1: He sung Poison by BBD and it sounds good, which
- 35:45Speaker 1: was crazy. He did a ghost face record. He was
- 35:49Speaker 1: like covering records and then he was like, yo, I'm
- 35:51Speaker 1: gonna cover this one record. From this dude. You may
- 35:55Speaker 1: or may not know him. You know what I'm saying.
- 35:58Speaker 1: His name is Jay Electronica. And then he quoted like
- 36:02Speaker 1: a line from the term sunshine, and then he went
- 36:05Speaker 1: on to wrap the whole thing, and I remember like going,
- 36:09Speaker 1: this is during my Space days. I remember going straight
- 36:13Speaker 1: to my space because I think that's where he said
- 36:17Speaker 1: he saw him or something like that, and realized that
- 36:21Speaker 1: I had already listened to it. I just didn't realize
- 36:25Speaker 1: most knew about it. So again, if you want to
- 36:30Speaker 1: hear what it was like to hear an untainted pre
- 36:36Speaker 1: exhibit c Jay Electronica, you can track this EP down.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I don't think it's on streaming services because you know,
- 36:44Speaker 1: it was like a mixtape. This was the blog error,
- 36:47Speaker 1: so you know, cats were just uploading their joints and
- 36:51Speaker 1: you know, getting popularity based off of that. What else?
- 36:56Speaker 1: You're going to do a couple more before we head out?
- 37:01Speaker 1: What's here? His one? Oh? Shoot, almost like lost it?
- 37:06Speaker 1: His one that is a some time ago to now.
- 37:09Speaker 1: The singles just here, but I do have the album.
- 37:11Speaker 1: I actually have the actual cassette. Back then, Show Busying
- 37:15Speaker 1: ag Runaway Slave. This was one of those albums. I
- 37:21Speaker 1: bought in ninety two with my allowance money, and I
- 37:29Speaker 1: felt like I was really learning something, you know. Not
- 37:32Speaker 1: that they were deep and heavy with some edit Paul's okay,
- 37:38Speaker 1: with some educational raps. It was just that it was
- 37:41Speaker 1: such a variety of content, you know what I'm saying,
- 37:45Speaker 1: when it came to the bars, when it came to
- 37:48Speaker 1: the beats, the selection of the beasts, Like when you
- 37:51Speaker 1: hear a song like party Groove on there, that was
- 37:54Speaker 1: dope that I had heard a lot at block parties in
- 37:57Speaker 1: New York. But then when I heard soul Clap, I
- 38:01Speaker 1: was like, Yo, what is this like? You want to
- 38:05Speaker 1: talk about true early essence of boom back? That is it?
- 38:10Speaker 1: For sure? Show Bus and Aggin says ag slept On.
- 38:15Speaker 1: In my opinion, yeah, I don't think he gets his
- 38:18Speaker 1: flowers because at one point he was like he was
- 38:22Speaker 1: pretty popular definitely in New York City as a as
- 38:27Speaker 1: an MC. But yeah, as time goes on, unfortunately people
- 38:33Speaker 1: forget and then they keep keep it moving. He's one
- 38:38Speaker 1: of my go to right here. Now, this is part one.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Hold on, let me see if there's a part two.
- 38:47Speaker 1: I mean that was part two. Let me see this
- 38:50Speaker 1: if I have part one I think I do. Yeah,
- 38:54Speaker 1: this is probably Can I click on it without playing it?
- 38:58Speaker 1: Oh nope, we don't want to pay y'all. Hold up,
- 39:04Speaker 1: let me get things together. Can you go to album
- 39:09Speaker 1: the show an album? Yes, Summertimes Shootout Fabulous first mixtape
- 39:18Speaker 1: in this mixtape series. I know a lot of people
- 39:21Speaker 1: only know the Soul tapes because of the types of
- 39:24Speaker 1: samples that was used. But you are sleeping on the
- 39:27Speaker 1: Summertime Shootout series. For Fabulous, not everybody was sleeping. But
- 39:33Speaker 1: check it out where I got it from that Pith
- 39:35Speaker 1: exclusive back then. That's when that Pith was still rolling.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Fabulous mixtape game is slept on big time, Like I
- 39:53Speaker 1: have some of the albums as you saw as I
- 39:56Speaker 1: was going through the list. But if you a person,
- 40:01Speaker 1: if a person says to you, like when you see these,
- 40:03Speaker 1: you know who's better, and they'd be like Fabulous or Jadakiss,
- 40:07Speaker 1: And you see a lot of people saying Fabulous, but
- 40:09Speaker 1: you think to yourself, how is he better than Kiss?
- 40:14Speaker 1: And you're comparing albums, but you're not thinking about his
- 40:19Speaker 1: has three styles on mixtapes that are classic, but Fabulous
- 40:23Speaker 1: has full on mixtapes that are classics. You know what
- 40:28Speaker 1: I'm saying to most people. And let's not forget when
- 40:30Speaker 1: they were both on the same album. When they did
- 40:33Speaker 1: that album together, Freddie versus Jason Bad was cooking like
- 40:39Speaker 1: I was all day. I was kind of surprised too.
- 40:41Speaker 1: I was surprised at Jada Kiss. I'm like, this ain't
- 40:43Speaker 1: the kids I know. But when I say sometimes Shootout
- 40:48Speaker 1: series is dope, I think Part three was just okay.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Do I have that one too? No? I think Part
- 40:55Speaker 1: three was like cool but didn't really live up to
- 41:00Speaker 1: who you know what was there as far as that series.
- 41:04Speaker 1: So I don't know. All right, let's see maybe we
- 41:08Speaker 1: could find two more in here on some random stuff.
- 41:13Speaker 1: I have a lot of go tos, so this will
- 41:17Speaker 1: become a series sort of because there's a lot of joints,
- 41:21Speaker 1: you know, I go to. I don't just listen to
- 41:23Speaker 1: new music all the time. What else we got here?
- 41:27Speaker 1: This is dope too, hold up Black Milk and that
- 41:31Speaker 1: turn It Now, this ain't a rap album, but if
- 41:33Speaker 1: you like yourself some music, you know musically, Rebellion sessions dope.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I don't know why they didn't continue, but it was
- 41:44Speaker 1: it was dope to me. And here we go Big Print,
- 41:50Speaker 1: the Turn of Forever. I think it just celebrated the anniversary.
- 41:55Speaker 1: I think he called it an album. He was like, yo,
- 41:56Speaker 1: I just want to, you know, celebrate my album. I
- 41:59Speaker 1: was like, that's an album. This was before this is
- 42:01Speaker 1: before the death Jam record deal that he wound up having,
- 42:07Speaker 1: And honestly, this was the project that made me a fan.
- 42:12Speaker 1: You talk about a producer slash rapper who could do
- 42:16Speaker 1: both well. Also, I felt like all of the artists
- 42:21Speaker 1: or the rappers from the South that I like in
- 42:23Speaker 1: the nineties, he was kind of like, it's kind of
- 42:28Speaker 1: like how people look at Kendrick, Right, there's something about
- 42:30Speaker 1: Kendrick that reminds you of early West Coast hip hop,
- 42:34Speaker 1: but he's not a copy of that, right, he's inspired
- 42:38Speaker 1: by I felt like Big Chrits music was inspired by,
- 42:43Speaker 1: you know, Outcast and Goodie Mob and April and MJG,
- 42:48Speaker 1: like the UGK. Like, I know it's Texas, y'all can
- 42:53Speaker 1: have that battle between who's South. I don't know. It's
- 42:56Speaker 1: all South to me, Okay, but this if you've never
- 43:01Speaker 1: heard a big crit I'll say start with this because
- 43:03Speaker 1: this is the one that got me in. If you
- 43:06Speaker 1: like music that you could sit back, chill, but it's
- 43:10Speaker 1: also dope, and the dude is like rapping, like you
- 43:13Speaker 1: could tell he's nice with the pen. It's almost like
- 43:17Speaker 1: when I heard this, I was like, damn, why doesn't
- 43:19Speaker 1: he have like a bigger deal? And then he got
- 43:23Speaker 1: the Death Jam deal. But the thing about that deal
- 43:26Speaker 1: with Death Jam, it felt like every time Krick dropped
- 43:29Speaker 1: an album, nothing was living up to what he had
- 43:33Speaker 1: done when he wasn't with a major. Nothing to me
- 43:38Speaker 1: at that point in time, because he had a couple
- 43:40Speaker 1: of albums or mixtapes or whatever before the Death Jam
- 43:44Speaker 1: deal that was so dope. And after he left Death Jam,
- 43:49Speaker 1: I think he put out like a double CD, which
- 43:52Speaker 1: I think it slept on. Maybe talk about that later.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Maybe that could be a loudstream just breaking down Big
- 43:57Speaker 1: Crit stuff. It was that like it was like he
- 44:02Speaker 1: returned to form, like he figured out what was wrong
- 44:06Speaker 1: with his music when he was on Death Jam or
- 44:09Speaker 1: what was missing and brought that back. But return of forever.
- 44:14Speaker 1: I'm about to listen to this after this live stream
- 44:18Speaker 1: Big Crit twenty eleven one of my favorites, and let's
- 44:21Speaker 1: just find one more. Uh, what's one more? Let's go
- 44:27Speaker 1: somewhere here in the middle of Yeah, this is this
- 44:30Speaker 1: is one. This is definitely one one of my goal
- 44:32Speaker 1: tos for sure. Jay Dillar is to Shining. I listened
- 44:36Speaker 1: to Donuts a lot, but this is the one I
- 44:40Speaker 1: go back to more frequently. Two thousand and six. Busters
- 44:44Speaker 1: on this album common Like I mentioned earlier with what
- 44:50Speaker 1: you call it with D'Angelo on the hook, so far
- 44:53Speaker 1: to go, that's that joint you probably heard a million times.
- 44:57Speaker 1: This is the type of album where I say, at
- 45:00Speaker 1: least production wise, because you can think of a number
- 45:03Speaker 1: of you know, whether it's a doughnuts or some slum
- 45:08Speaker 1: village stuff that you can introduce somebody to Jay Diller.
- 45:11Speaker 1: But this is one where I don't want anybody to
- 45:14Speaker 1: get afraid. Some people be afraid of boom back as
- 45:17Speaker 1: soon as soon as they like, is it going to
- 45:19Speaker 1: be like you know, you know, I want want my
- 45:21Speaker 1: tens and they be like, yo, I don't want to
- 45:23Speaker 1: hear that. This is the type of album. I'm like, Yo,
- 45:27Speaker 1: listen to this very production on this album from Jay Dillar. Yeah,
- 45:34Speaker 1: yet E equals and that that beat like this is
- 45:40Speaker 1: one of those albums again can be your introduction to
- 45:44Speaker 1: Jay Dillar and his music because it's it's stellar. That's
- 45:50Speaker 1: gonna do it for me. You can follow this podcast
