- 0:00Speaker 1: For judgment is without mercy to the one who has
- 0:03Speaker 1: shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2.13 Dear
- 0:12Speaker 1: Heavenly Father, We stand in awe of the mercy you
- 0:16Speaker 1: demonstrated when you sent your Son to be born in
- 0:19Speaker 1: a manger, to live among us, and ultimately to give
- 0:24Speaker 1: His life for our redemption. We are forever grateful for
- 0:28Speaker 1: this unparalleled act of mercy, a divine gift that forever
- 0:34Speaker 1: changed the course of humanity. Father, let the spirit of
- 0:39Speaker 1: Christmas remind us to extend mercy as freely as we
- 0:43Speaker 1: have received it from you. As we give gifts to
- 0:47Speaker 1: our loved ones, let us also give forgiveness to those
- 0:51Speaker 1: who have wronged us, understanding to those who have misunderstood us,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and kindness to those who may be in need. Teach
- 1:02Speaker 1: us to celebrate Christmas not just with festive cheer, but
- 1:06Speaker 1: with genuine love and mercy that mirrors your heart. Let
- 1:12Speaker 1: mercy triumph over judgment in our lives, transforming our hearts
- 1:17Speaker 1: and the hearts of those around us. In the name
- 1:21Speaker 1: of Jesus Christ, our Savior and King, we pray.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Amen. The midday sun hung heavy in the sky, its
- 1:37Speaker 2: scorching rays beat down on Joseph's back. He worked to
- 1:40Speaker 2: the sound of rhythmic chiseling against the stone scraping of wood.
- 1:45Speaker 2: It was a symphony of his dedication to his craft
- 1:48Speaker 2: and devotion to his family. The life of a craftsman
- 1:51Speaker 2: wasn't glamorous work, but he found joy in it. He
- 1:55Speaker 2: cherished his trade. He enjoyed molding something useful and beautiful
- 1:59Speaker 2: that would bless others. Today, he swung his hammer with
- 2:02Speaker 2: even more joy than usual. He ground the bricks with
- 2:05Speaker 2: more finesse than usual, and precisely sanded every beam. He
- 2:10Speaker 2: wasn't shaping just another project. He was making the foundation
- 2:13Speaker 2: of his and Mary's future home. While Mary aided her
- 2:17Speaker 2: cousin Elizabeth with her pregnancy and birth, Joseph toiled under
- 2:20Speaker 2: the sun, shaping their future. Each sound of his hammer
- 2:24Speaker 2: falling onto the chisel was a note in the symphony
- 2:27Speaker 2: of their shared dreams. In his mind's eye, he saw
- 2:31Speaker 2: tiny feet scampering across the stone floor, and heard the
- 2:34Speaker 2: echo of laughter ringing through the rooms. He envisioned holding
- 2:37Speaker 2: Mary close, their eyes resting fondly on their children at play.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Joyful anxiety gnawed at his heart. He longed for Mary's return.
- 2:46Speaker 2: His gaze wandered to the winding roads above. His eyes
- 2:49Speaker 2: saw a lone carriage approaching. Shading his eyes against the
- 2:53Speaker 2: blazing sun, he discerned the figure of Mary. His heart
- 2:57Speaker 2: surged with joy, and he dropped his hammer, hurrying towards her.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I can't wait for her to see the progress I've
- 3:03Speaker 2: made on our home, he thought, a smile playing at
- 3:06Speaker 2: the corners of his mouth as he dashed towards her.
- 3:09Speaker 2: She was a long way away. He watched her from
- 3:11Speaker 2: a distance get off the carriage and briskly walk home
- 3:14Speaker 2: with her parents. Their heads were down and shoulders hunched forward.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yet Joseph was too excited to notice such things. His
- 3:21Speaker 2: heart was aflutter with anticipation. To see her eyes widen
- 3:25Speaker 2: in surprise, to hear her laughter fill the air, to
- 3:28Speaker 2: watch her lips curve into a grin at the sight
- 3:30Speaker 2: of their burgeoning home, these were the moments he yearned for.
- 3:34Speaker 2: He stopped at the well to clean himself. After steadying
- 3:37Speaker 2: his hands and breath, he approached her father's house and
- 3:40Speaker 2: knocked at the door.
- 3:42Speaker 3: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 3:44Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,
- 3:49Speaker 3: I want you to know that I would absolutely love
- 3:51Speaker 3: to send you my daily devotional, that will give you
- 3:54Speaker 3: fresh encouragement every single morning and day. From the moment
- 3:59Speaker 3: we wake up to the moment our head finally hits
- 4:02Speaker 3: the pillow, there are thousands of things demanding our attention.
- 4:07Speaker 3: But it's in the midst of all this crush and
- 4:09Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 4:12Speaker 3: truth in God's Word. That's why I want to help
- 4:15Speaker 3: you spend time each day growing in God's life-giving, life-changing Word,
- 4:21Speaker 3: by sending you my free daily email devotional, PowerPoint Today.

- 4:31Speaker 3: That's JackGraham.org. JackGraham.org. Today's story is inspired by Matthew 1,
- 4:40Speaker 3: verse 19, when Joseph discovers that Mary is pregnant. Joseph
- 4:45Speaker 3: is a central figure in the Christmas story, and is
- 4:48Speaker 3: often overshadowed by the more prominent characters. Yet, I believe
- 4:53Speaker 3: Joseph is an unheralded hero of great character. In this story,
- 4:59Speaker 3: we find Joseph at a poignant crossroads, grappling with feelings
- 5:03Speaker 3: of betrayal while standing on the precipice of a divine
- 5:07Speaker 3: intervention that would change the course of the world. The
- 5:11Speaker 3: birth of Jesus was filled with key moments when everything
- 5:14Speaker 3: could have been thwarted. One of those moments? will happen
- 5:18Speaker 3: in this story, when Joseph has the right to stone
- 5:21Speaker 3: Mary for adultery. Joseph will find himself in a position
- 5:27Speaker 3: that many of us find ourselves in. We all have
- 5:31Speaker 3: moments where we can lash out in anger and show
- 5:33Speaker 3: judgment or choose the path of mercy. Often, the way
- 5:38Speaker 3: of compassion is the more challenging trail to tread. Joseph
- 5:42Speaker 3: could end all his hurt and problems by showing Mary judgment.
- 5:47Speaker 3: But the measure of a man's character is often revealed
- 5:50Speaker 3: not in how he uses his power, but in how
- 5:53Speaker 3: he retrains it. Jesus said, Blessed are the meek, for
- 5:57Speaker 3: they shall inherit the earth. Meekness does not mean weakness.
- 6:02Speaker 3: It means power under control. Will Joseph lash out and
- 6:07Speaker 3: use his authority to end Mary? Or will he show
- 6:10Speaker 3: meekness and mercy, ushering in the greatest story ever told?
- 6:16Speaker 3: Let's find out now. in this cinematic retelling of Matthew
- 6:19Speaker 3: chapter 1, verse 19. Afterwards, we'll unpack the deep and
- 6:24Speaker 3: hidden things.
- 6:28Speaker 2: The journey home from her cousin's home seemed to drag
- 6:30Speaker 2: on forever. Mary was reeling with anxiety, counting her every
- 6:35Speaker 2: heartbeat on the way back to Nazareth. A storm of
- 6:38Speaker 2: emotions welled within her, but she had no choice but
- 6:41Speaker 2: to go home. Sure, she thought of running or remaining
- 6:44Speaker 2: with Elizabeth, but that was not the path God had
- 6:46Speaker 2: chosen for her. The cart dropped Mary off at the
- 6:49Speaker 2: corner of the city gates. She was back in Nazareth.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Her feet were heavy with the burden of the secret
- 6:54Speaker 2: she bore. Yet, she held her chin high, her spirit
- 6:58Speaker 2: bolstered by the divine promise nestled within her. Her siblings
- 7:02Speaker 2: were the first to see her arrive. They ran to her,
- 7:04Speaker 2: jumping in the air and squealing. She managed a brief
- 7:07Speaker 2: smile before locking eyes with her parents. Her mother covered
- 7:11Speaker 2: her mouth, and her father tightened his fist. They could
- 7:14Speaker 2: see what the children couldn't. Mary was with child. Mary
- 7:18Speaker 2: followed her parents silently to their house. Her father shut
- 7:22Speaker 2: the door. Mary breathed in and whispered a silent prayer.
- 7:26Speaker 2: She prayed the Lord would soften their hearts. She hoped
- 7:29Speaker 2: God had somehow spoken to them too. The warmth in
- 7:31Speaker 2: her home was replaced by the chill of her parents' gaze.
- 7:34Speaker 2: With a trembling voice, holding back rage, her father spoke softly, saying, Mary,
- 7:41Speaker 2: what have you done? Before Mary could answer, her mother
- 7:44Speaker 2: grabbed her by the shoulders with tears in her eyes.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Your virtue, Mary!
- 7:49Speaker 4: Why have you done this?
- 7:51Speaker 2: What happened? Mary's lower lip began to quiver, but she
- 7:54Speaker 2: knew she had to remain strong or else they might
- 7:56Speaker 2: portray guilt. She wasn't guilty. She was the opposite of guilty.
- 8:01Speaker 2: She was chosen above all others. She cleared her throat
- 8:04Speaker 2: and looked her parents in the eyes.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Before I left for Elizabeth's, I was visited by an angel.
- 8:11Speaker 4: He told me God had chosen me to bear a
- 8:14Speaker 4: child of promise. I did not disgrace you, Joseph, or myself.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I have been called by God to raise the Son
- 8:23Speaker 4: of God.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Disbelief and anger came upon them. You've brought shame to
- 8:29Speaker 2: us and to Joseph, and you shame God even more
- 8:32Speaker 2: with your story. Her father yelled. His voice was cracking
- 8:36Speaker 2: from a mixture of anger and betrayal. The sharp sting
- 8:40Speaker 2: of their accusations left a bitter taste in Mary's mouth.
- 8:43Speaker 2: She tried to explain, her voice filled with the desperate
- 8:46Speaker 2: hope that they would understand. But the storm of their
- 8:49Speaker 2: wrath drowned her out. Just then, there was a knock
- 8:51Speaker 2: at the door. Mary knew that knock. The same knock
- 8:55Speaker 2: would greet her every day at dusk for a stroll
- 8:57Speaker 2: through the garden. Mary's father opened the door. Behind it
- 9:00Speaker 2: was Joseph, beaming with anticipation to see his bride-to-be. His
- 9:04Speaker 2: smile was quickly interrupted when he saw Mary's hand on
- 9:08Speaker 2: her midsection. Confusion etched lines on his forehead, and bitter
- 9:12Speaker 2: betrayal painted his gaze. His world, like hers, immediately spun
- 9:17Speaker 2: off its axis. Mary's father leaned into Joseph and whispered, Joseph,
- 9:21Speaker 2: we have just found out ourselves. We didn't know, we swear.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Joseph's eyes were fogging with restrained tears. He looked as
- 9:28Speaker 2: if he was going to break, but he didn't.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Mary, he whispered.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Why?
- 9:34Speaker 2: Mary could barely stand the look of betrayal on his face.
- 9:38Speaker 2: She tried explaining everything to him, but the story seemed
- 9:41Speaker 2: too outlandish. Mary's father, a stern and righteous man, made
- 9:45Speaker 2: his judgment. Joseph, she has wronged you. You have the
- 9:48Speaker 2: right to punish her, even to stone her if you wish.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Her words were cutting to Mary's soul. Her own father
- 9:56Speaker 2: had just permitted Joseph to execute her. Her fate was
- 9:59Speaker 2: now in the hands of a man whose face was
- 10:01Speaker 2: about to burst with grief. Joseph's gaze moved from her
- 10:05Speaker 2: father to Mary, the silent question lingering in his eyes. Then,
- 10:09Speaker 2: with a wave of anger and despair, he turned and
- 10:12Speaker 2: walked away. His departure left a chilling silence that hung
- 10:15Speaker 2: heavily in the room. Mary and her parents were left
- 10:18Speaker 2: wondering what he would choose. Joseph went to be alone.
- 10:22Speaker 2: He stormed past the site where he had built the
- 10:24Speaker 2: foundation for their new home. With sadness weighing heavy on
- 10:27Speaker 2: his shoulders, he hiked into the hills and watched the
- 10:30Speaker 2: sun descend over the plains outside Nazareth. Betrayal gnawed at
- 10:34Speaker 2: Joseph's heart. He stood on the grass inside, watching the
- 10:37Speaker 2: final rays of light recede from view. The sun's final
- 10:41Speaker 2: rays painted the sky above a lush and vibrant pink.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Beneath the torrent of Joseph's emotions, There was an undercurrent
- 10:47Speaker 2: of anger towards God. Have I not been loyal?
- 10:51Speaker 1: He whispered.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I have toiled to build our home.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I have shown restraint and kindness. Pain shot up Joseph's
- 10:59Speaker 2: heart and lingered in his throat as he spoke. He
- 11:02Speaker 2: stood and yelled at the wind. I did everything I
- 11:05Speaker 2: was supposed to do. I remained faithful. I obeyed your commands.
- 11:10Speaker 2: What have I done to deserve this? His voice cracked,
- 11:14Speaker 2: and then he crumbled to the ground and wept. A
- 11:17Speaker 2: thousand thoughts whirled around in his mind as he grappled
- 11:21Speaker 2: with the reality before him. He was torn between the
- 11:24Speaker 2: laws of the land and his affection for Mary. His
- 11:27Speaker 2: honor demanded he react, yet his kindness whispered another path.
- 11:32Speaker 2: He was at the crossroads of judgment and mercy. Which
- 11:35Speaker 2: path would he choose? Why should I show mercy, he thought.
- 11:39Speaker 2: What good has being good done? In the depths of
- 11:42Speaker 2: his turmoil, Joseph was a just and righteous man. Thousands
- 11:46Speaker 2: of small decisions to do the right thing every day
- 11:48Speaker 2: had already forged a character within him. He sighed and
- 11:52Speaker 2: watched the colorful horizon give way to the darkness. The
- 11:55Speaker 2: coolness of the evening began to settle over the grassy
- 11:58Speaker 2: valley below. Joseph closed his eyes and whispered, I have
- 12:01Speaker 2: made my choice. He would not subject Mary to public shame,
- 12:05Speaker 2: nor stoke the fires of scandal. He would divorce her quietly, mercifully.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Even as he grappled with the shards of his shattered dreams,
- 12:13Speaker 2: he chose kindness over revenge, mercy over judgment. It was
- 12:18Speaker 2: a decision that echoed the depths of his character and
- 12:20Speaker 2: the unwavering strength of his heart. The night was filled
- 12:24Speaker 2: with his silent and somber resolution. Under the exposed stars,
- 12:28Speaker 2: Joseph laid back on the grassy slope and drifted off
- 12:32Speaker 2: to sleep.
- 12:39Speaker 3: According to the Jewish tradition of the time, betrothal was
- 12:43Speaker 3: as binding as marriage. It must have felt like a
- 12:46Speaker 3: painful betrayal when Mary revealed that she was pregnant. Mary, however,
- 12:52Speaker 3: stood firm in her truth, telling the divine message she
- 12:55Speaker 3: had received. Her resolve in this challenging situation is admirable,
- 13:00Speaker 3: but it also sets the stage for Joseph's crucial decision.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Despite his initial feelings of betrayal, Joseph's actions reveal his
- 13:10Speaker 3: remarkable character. The scripture describes him as a just man,
- 13:14Speaker 3: implying his righteousness and adherence to the law. However, he
- 13:19Speaker 3: was also unwilling to disgrace Mary publicly, indicating his compassion
- 13:24Speaker 3: and mercy. At the time, according to the Mosaic law,
- 13:29Speaker 3: he could have had Mary stoned for adultery. Instead, he
- 13:33Speaker 3: decided to divorce her quietly, choosing mercy over judgment. This
- 13:38Speaker 3: decision was monumental in his personal life and in the
- 13:42Speaker 3: broader scope of God's salvation plan. Joseph's mercy mirrors God's
- 13:48Speaker 3: mercy towards us, the core theme of the Christmas story.
- 13:54Speaker 3: But God, through an angelic dream, would soon intervene, ensuring
- 13:58Speaker 3: Joseph's understanding and cooperation with his divine plan. As we
- 14:05Speaker 3: reflect on this portion of the Nativity story, Joseph's example
- 14:09Speaker 3: is both an encouragement and a challenge. He stood at
- 14:13Speaker 3: the crossroads of judgment and mercy and chose the path
- 14:16Speaker 3: of mercy, unknowingly echoing the profound mercy God offers to
- 14:21Speaker 3: us through the birth of Jesus. This Christmas, let us
- 14:25Speaker 3: strive to model Joseph's example in our own lives. When
- 14:29Speaker 3: we feel betrayed or hurt, may we have the strength
- 14:32Speaker 3: to choose mercy over judgment, remembering that God chose mercy
- 14:37Speaker 3: for us. gifting us His Son to guide us toward love, forgiveness,
- 14:42Speaker 3: and reconciliation. The Christmas story isn't only about the miraculous
- 14:47Speaker 3: birth of Jesus, but also about the people God chose
- 14:51Speaker 3: to be part of that miracle. Just as Joseph had
- 14:55Speaker 3: a crucial part to play, we too have a role
- 14:58Speaker 3: in God's divine narrative. Like Joseph, may we be willing
- 15:02Speaker 3: to embrace life's unexpected turns, bearing in mind that in
- 15:07Speaker 3: doing so, we become part of God's grand story of
- 15:10Speaker 3: salvation and mercy. In our next episode, Joseph will be
- 15:16Speaker 3: face-to-face with the same angel that stole Zechariah's voice and
- 15:20Speaker 3: heralded the coming of Christ. Joseph's loyalty and character will
- 15:25Speaker 3: be tested, and the journey to the manger will be underway.
