- 3:38to talk a little bit this morning about virtual schooling in West Virginia. Cheryl
- 3:44Staley's with us. She is the administrator for the West Virginia Virtual Academy.
- 3:46She is the first West Virginia to be nominated and I found out in the
- 3:50green room to win the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools Change Maker Awards.
- 3:57Cheryl, Congratulations, good morning, Welcome back to the show. Good morning,
- 4:00Dave. Thank you so very much. So give us a timeline here.
- 4:03You were nominated for this award and you made the trip to DC.
- 4:06First of all, what is the award? Talk about that that'd be a
- 4:10good place to start. The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is a national
- 4:14organization where they are representing charter schools around the country. Charter schools are a
- 4:21huge, growing movement and it's a new and different way to educate children.
- 4:30They are very big on Capitol Hill and they have this thing called the change
- 4:33Maker Award, and it's for legislatures, school administrators. There was a parent
- 4:41there and we are people who have a voice and have something to say about
- 4:46charter schools. So you were nominated for this award and you made the trip
- 4:49to d C. You won. Yes, congratulations, first West Virginian,
- 4:54I guess to win this ward. How exactly is the award chosen? Who
- 4:59chooses this award. Well, I'm not sure all the details behind the scenes,
- 5:01but from what I understood, you know, as you want, I
- 5:05got the trophy. What I understand is that the West Virginia Public Charter School
- 5:11Board endorsed my nomination, sent that to DC. The National Alliance selected me
- 5:17as one of the six winners based upon my experience as a parent, as
- 5:21a teacher and administrator with charter schools. I have been involved with the startup
- 5:27with two different charter schools. I've been doing this for quite a while.
- 5:30I don't want to get into your background. How did you give us your
- 5:32background overall, not just in the charter school world, but even before that.
- 5:36Just give us a background in shall state. I'm an educator, came
- 5:41out of the knock any school systems left like so many people did, but
- 5:46went into education, loved it. Taught high school Inner City Philadelphia for years
- 5:51and just found my passion. And then my son got sick, and my
- 5:56son needed a different school environment. He couldn't go into a building, he
- 6:01needed time to heal. And I discovered a virtual public charter school, and
- 6:05I watched my son blossom. He blossomed socially, he bloshed them emotionally and
- 6:14academically, and I want I want to do this. This is what I
- 6:17want to do. So I left my great job that I loved, went
- 6:21to a virtual charter school and I have not looked back. I want to
- 6:27This is kind of off subject, but I want to talk about the compare
- 6:30and contrast teaching in inner city Philadelphia schools with somebody who's from from Kanawha County
- 6:35and yourself went through Kanawha County schools. Talk about the differences there. They're
- 6:40a lot, just a few, just a few. Honestly, I loved
- 6:44it. One of the things that I loved about my students in Philadelphia is
- 6:48that their loyalty to people who trust them, people who care about them,
- 6:56people who respect them. They are fiercely loyal and that drives my is one
- 7:04of the driving factors for me in terms of building relationships with kids. I
- 7:09love kids. I believe in kids. I'm gonna push them, but that's
- 7:14okay, and kids have my back because I have theirs. And I think
- 7:18when you have that relationship with a student, you can do amazing things with
- 7:23them. And I learned that in Philadelphia, which was the best part of
- 7:28being in an inner City School, but Dave Allen showing five to eighty live.
- 7:31Presented in part by General Hardware of Windfield and Milton General Number of Winfield.
- 7:34For all projects, big and small shop locally visit General Hardware WV dot
- 7:39com. Let's get back to this award for a moment. It's the official
- 7:44name, I think was the change Maker Award. Talk about the definition of
- 7:49a change maker? What did they look I know you said you didn't know
- 7:51everything that went into choosing you, but particularly, but what are they what's
- 7:57the critt here? What are they looking for? I think they're looking for
- 8:00people who have that inner passion and drive to make a difference, People who
- 8:05are not afraid to raise their voice and to advocate for change, because it's
- 8:09not easy. When I came back home to West Virginia and I was a
- 8:13school choice advocate, you know, I got a lot of looks, but
- 8:20I so passionately believe that this is what we need to do for our students.
- 8:24We must evolve education. Why do you feel so strongly about this,
- 8:28Cheryl? The traditional model. When I grew up in Knall County Schools,
- 8:33which is a wonderful school system to grow up in desks classrooms doesn't work anymore,
- 8:39not for every child. It doesn't work not for every child. It
- 8:43works for some people. I personally would do really well in a classroom environment.
- 8:48That's just who I am and what I am. But it doesn't work
- 8:50that way for every student, and we need to have different models available for
- 8:56kids who have different needs. We have kids at West Virginia Virtual Academy who
- 9:01need acceleration. They're bored in a classroom, so we can push them.
- 9:07We have kids at our school who have huge learning losses. We need to
- 9:11mitigate those. We have the flexibility to do that that you don't necessarily have
- 9:18in a traditional school. So when I was teaching and I had my forty
- 9:22kids in a classroom one, we have to move around. Try moving around
- 9:26forty teenagers. That's not easy. But you teach to the middle. I
- 9:30don't care how good you are, you're always teaching to the middle. I
- 9:33don't have to do that with our school. Our teachers can teach to the
- 9:37child, and that I think is going to help us evolve our education system.
- 9:43And I think sometimes and I've had various folks from this world, from
- 9:46Doug Sibiletti on down on this show from time to time, and they've had
- 9:50to educate me, no pun intended. They've had to educate me a lot
- 9:52on this too, because I think sometimes there is sharel a idea in people's
- 9:58head that people that are proposed that's whether it's folks that do what you do,
- 10:01whether it's people in the legislature, whatever. If you're a proponent of
- 10:05school choice, that that means you're anti public school. And what I've learned
- 10:11in talking to all you folks is that's not the case at all. No,
- 10:13sir, we are not anti public school because this is a public school,
- 10:18I mean. And that's something Doug has had to work with me on
- 10:20because I've said as opposed to public school, and he always jumps in it,
- 10:22says, Dave, we are a public school. But there's not this
- 10:26adversarial relationship, at least on your guys. In correct, we are a
- 10:31public school. We are serving children of West Virginia, just like fifty five
- 10:35counties in this state. We are doing the same thing. We're serving kids.
- 10:41And let's talk about the before we let you go, the biggest misconception
- 10:45about your school, because I'm sure there are plenty, and when you're out
- 10:48at a you know, at a function, or somebody stops you at a
- 10:50grocery store or whatever. They probably say, well, I heard it was
- 10:54this. What's the biggest misconception you run into. We are not pandemic teaching.
- 10:58We are live teachers. We provide live instruction for kids. We deal
- 11:03with the whole child. So not only do they have academic excellence expected of
- 11:09them, we have social programs. We have clubs, we have student council,
- 11:15we have National Honor Society. We are just like any other school.
- 11:20We just don't have a building. Well, and the numbers are growing in
- 11:26Less Virginia. I mean and not just in West Virginia but across the country,
- 11:28but specifically because I'm concerned with West Virginia. They are growing more and
- 11:33more parents Cheryl are making this choice. We grew by two hundred and fifty
- 11:37five percent this year. Now, why do you think, I mean,
- 11:39I know, the pandemic taught us a lot of good things and bad things
- 11:43about our education system. Why do you think that there is this growth?
- 11:46Because, truth be told, even before the pandemic, things were starting to
- 11:52look in that direction of a different model for some students and their school.
- 11:56This predates the pandemic. Yes, say, I've been involved with this for
- 12:01a number of years. It's just new to West Virginia. I really believe
- 12:05that. You know, we've got kids who spend two three hours a day
- 12:09on a school bus. You don't have to do that in our world.
- 12:13Just get up. Some days you don't even have to get up. We
- 12:15have kids who do school sometimes in bed. Not my favorite thing, but
- 12:20I do it. So we don't have that. We don't have the bullying,
- 12:24we don't have the violence. We accept and honor all of our kids,
- 12:31and they're not afraid. It makes me sad to listen to kids and
- 12:35they tell me how they've been bullied and harassed and jumped in bathrooms, and
- 12:41they feel safe with us, and they feel like teachers care, and not
- 12:45that teachers care all over the state, but we can express that differently,
- 12:50and I think it resonates with our families. We also welcome the adults into
- 12:56our world. So our parents are and coaches are actively involved with our kids
- 13:03with their education, with me, with the teachers, and that's something of
- 13:07an education for families who often don't have positive experiences with school systems. We
- 13:13expect them, we need them because they're with their children. Well, Cheryl,
- 13:18congratulations on your award. I mean I thought you'd at least come in
- 13:24with like a sash or something. No office sash, okay, but was
- 13:28there a trophy involvement? And I lugged that thing around like the Stanley Cup.
- 13:33You're just taking away everywhere you go. We we had to go to
- 13:37Capitol Hill after the awards ceremony, so I lugged that thing around. It
- 13:41waged a ton. Felt like I was Karen's child the entire day. But
- 13:46it was a phenomenal opportunity. I got to go to Capitol Hill and and
- 13:52speak I had. I got to meet with our elected representatives and talk to
- 13:58them about my passion and interests in charter schools and how they can help us
- 14:03do a better job serving schools. So that was just amazing. Well,
- 14:07Cheryl, congratulations, you're a trailblazer. You know you got this award.
- 14:09Now, now the onus is on some other people that do things like what
- 14:13you do to bring another award like that home to West Virginia. Cheryl Staley
- 14:18the winner for the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools Change Maker Award. I

- 17:37Do you know any public schools with this model? Says a Texter texta
- 17:42says Dave got a great education in public schools, and now we have people
- 17:45wanting to attack our teachers and our schools. I think here, here is
- 17:51where I kind of am on this. And even in talking to Cheryl,
- 17:55she said the same thing about her own personal experience when it came to to
- 18:00when it came to being a teacher, I'm sorry and king to being a
- 18:03student. Every student is different and every student learns differently. I was not
- 18:08one that I'll be honest with you probably would have done well and in that
- 18:12sort of a virtual learning environment because I'm a social kind of guy. I
- 18:18like to be out, I like to talk to people, and my GPA
- 18:22in high school will will prove that that I spent more time socializing and telling
- 18:26jokes and whatever that I probably spent in probably spent on academics. So it
- 18:30probably would not have been for me, but if it is, I think
- 18:37for some students, and the results are there now. Again, we're very
- 18:41early in the process. West Virginia's kind of late to the game. This
- 18:42has been going on pre pandemic across the country and we're just kind of catching
- 18:48up here. So I think the jury is still out on it. But
- 18:51there are some good things happening, and I am one that I think,
- 18:53I honestly think that parents should should have a choice Texas. I think history
- 18:57will revealed that virtual school will make people dumber, not smarter. People learn
- 19:03so much more when they're physically with other humans. This has been true throughout
- 19:06the entire history of humanity. We are just hours away from the Stay Boys
- 19:11Baseball tournament getting underway Gomart Ballpark. Fred person Or, the voice of high
- 19:15school sports in West Virginia, joined us right now. Sir Frederick, good
- 19:18morning, Good morning, David. You better take care of some business,
- 19:21sir, Yes, yes, baseball time. No no no no no,
- 19:25no no no no, I'm sorry. The other thing, Fred, the
- 19:27other thing that you reminded me about. Yeah, you know me, I'm
- 19:30just in like you're in baseball mode. I get it, I get it.
- 19:33But there's something else going on in your life that has nothing to do
- 19:37with sports. Fred, I wouldn't go that far. I mean, you
- 19:41know, it's funny. My wife, my beautiful wife, Jan is celebrating
- 19:45a birthday today. She was telling me last night. You know, it's
- 19:49either my birthday or our anniversary or your birthday. And you're always working the
- 19:56way it is it's radio, you know you it happens. But so I
- 20:02left home about five thirty this morning. I'll get home about at eleven to
- 20:07night. Happy birthday, birthday, Jan and her her romantic birthday dinner will
- 20:12be a corn dog and nachos from Go Martin Ballpark? Is that right now?
- 20:15I will call her later. You have to decide. I Ain'm doing
- 20:18both. Mean, yeah, you know now, why would you would you
- 20:22want to? Sweet lady, she's a very sweet life for Yeah. I
- 20:25mean we've been married. It's a special type Fred, that can be married
- 20:29to one of us. And I've been married for thirty two years in September.
- 20:33It takes a special type to live, to live this lifestyle, and
- 20:37youve been doing it longer than I. I will have been married in November
- 20:38fifty five years. Congratulations, man, that's but right. And I tell
- 20:44her though, the reason that it has worked so long as I've really only
- 20:47seen her about twenty one years. You know it's not fifty five. Okay,
- 20:49well it's probably her. All right. Let's get to the tournament.
- 20:53First game this afternoon, Triple A GW take it on Martinsburg number four c
- 21:00G DUB and the number one Bulldogs of Martinsburg. Yeah. Like a lot
- 21:03of sports day, they rotate what classes start now when you play, And
- 21:07I tell you, I think we're starting off with two of the very very
- 21:10best games we're gonna have. I mean, you look at the number one
- 21:12seed in Triple A and Martinsburg. They're thirty three and three. The thing
- 21:15that stands out to me about them, they're averaging almost eleven runs a game.
- 21:19They're only giving up a little over two runs a game. So yeah,
- 21:22pitching, they have, hitting, they are solid. They're looking for
- 21:26the first state title in fifteen years. And they go against the team that
- 21:32the record is not outstanding. If you look at thirty three and three from
- 21:34Martinsburg and GW you're not quite there, the boy. They have set their
- 21:40pitching up to where it could be a classic. That starts at four thirty
- 21:44today and that's followed by two and three Cable Midland of Morgantown. I'm hearing
- 21:48some great things spread about this Morgantown team. Morgantown is is solid, no
- 21:53question it's going to be you know. Of course, Cabole Midland won it
- 21:57all last year and they were young year. They returned quite a bit of
- 22:02those players from last year's team that won it all. So the two to
- 22:04three game about gets into about seven tonight at Gomart Park should be a good
- 22:08one as well. Tomorrow we get started at ten with a Class double,
- 22:11a match up with the Generals of Winfield taking on Independence Generals or the number
- 22:15one seed Patriots are number four. That's right, Winfield won at all.
- 22:19Yeah, and last year they're back to repeats. Winfield and the softball team
- 22:23just oneball team, just one. Good time to be in Winfield to be
- 22:26a general right now, it's not bad if you're the head coach of by
- 22:30the one of those Yeah, really yeah, I think Winfield certainly the number
- 22:33one seed for a reason. They returned quite a few from last year's state
- 22:37title team. Number four Independence. You want to be playing your best baseball
- 22:41at this time of the year, Scott Cuthbert, veteran coach at Independence.
- 22:45That's exactly what his kids are doing. So that'll be a good one tomorrow
- 22:48morning. That starts to play at ten am. We're going to follow that
- 22:52up with number three inb A Herbert Hoover and number two Frankfurt. Yeah,
- 22:59I'm looking forward that one. I have. Frankfort Is it's a name that
- 23:03if you're a baseball fan in high school, you know, Frankfort All the
- 23:06Falcons, they're always there. Herbert Hoover, they seemingly just win. That's
- 23:10that's what the Huskies do. They win, and it'll be that'll be a
- 23:14good one at noon tomorrow and then tomorrow afternoon about five o'clock. We started
- 23:19at four thirty today, we'll start at or five five o'clock tomorrow and Williamstown
- 23:26against Buffalo, Williamstown's number one seed. Think about this. Williamstown is a
- 23:30single a team that is good in everything. High school baseball is the only
- 23:36sport that Williamstown does not have a state triller, then do you think that
- 23:41that's the only sport. They have the state titles in every other sport.
- 23:44It's not complication. Time to catch up. And then of course Charleston Catholic
- 23:48in East Hardy, Charleston Catholic to me has maybe one of the best catchers
- 23:52that we'll see this entire weekend. And Zaden Ransom only a sophomore, and
- 23:56the kid is legit. I mean, he is an outstanding back basketball player
- 24:00and I think he's even better baseball player. I want to talk about this
- 24:04team in Buffalo, though, I mean, Buffalo's in this thing despite their
- 24:10coaching staff quitting. Hell. I mean, who's the head coach of Buffalo?
- 24:14We got three names, Yeah, you've got what this is, the
- 24:17athletic director and the principal. I mean the hierarchy here basically. And I
- 24:22don't know what happened there. It's not it's no reason to try to get
- 24:26into that here because they're in the state tournament. But Buffalo's coaching staff quent
- 24:30and the players are still there. And somebody stepped up at the school,
- 24:33as I said, principal ad and said we got to get this thing done
- 24:34and that's exactly what they're doing. Would that be a story? I mean,
- 24:38yeah, how important is that head coach? Yeah, but no,
- 24:44that's a great story. And it's one that you said it Bright. I
- 24:48don't even know that you delve into it once begin and you mentioned it.
- 24:49Hey, they're here. It's all about the kids. Yes, it's all
- 24:53about the kids. And most of these kids, I mean, you know,
- 24:56graduations have already happened. So these kids are are are playing now just
- 25:00I mean they're they're they're playing for pride at this point. They and they
- 25:03want to win championships even though they're technically no longer students. With the catcher
- 25:08the catcher for Washington last week in the softball team, and she said she
- 25:14graduated on May the eighteenth, and a week or a week plus later,
- 25:18they're still playing softball together. And she delayed a trip to the beach andever
- 25:22that's what you do though you know you graduated as a senior. At its
- 25:26Wilds Beach trip or something. These athletes, they hang around and they do
- 25:30what they're supposed to do. They we've seen I don't I can't think of
- 25:33a team we'll see this year, but every year similarly, we've had a
- 25:37graduation on the mound. Yeah, at Goodmart Park. You know, here's
- 25:41your diploma. Now go play ball, No, no work under slider.
- 25:45Yeah all right. Saturday Championship Saturday, Triple A game at ten, followed
- 25:48by the Double A then the Single A. One of the things Fred,
- 25:51that I love about the baseball tournament, with all due respect to all the
- 25:53other sports which you cover, is it's it's just really simple, you know.
- 25:57I mean, you don't have all of this, you know, elimination
- 26:00stuff. Once you get to the state tournament, it's got it's got less,
- 26:03you know, teams at that level. Basically you just go out and
- 26:06play for three days, uh, in a great facility, and uh it's
- 26:10it's it's just kind of simple. I like that I do to you lose,
- 26:11you go home. And the one thing I really like about the Championship
- 26:14Saturday, you buy a ticket for the Saturday morning game the Triple A title.
- 26:18You can stay and watch the other two on that same tickets. Boom
- 26:21boom boom, three games for one ticket. And uh, I know I
- 26:25shouldn't say this. Announcers cursed, but the weather is supposed to be great.
- 26:29The weather's going to be fantastic. It's one of those what the what
- 26:32Tony Cavalier would call a top ten day, ten day, I think top
- 26:36three day. Yeah, I mean you got three great And it's not always
- 26:37been the case. No, We've ended up late late Sunday mornings, yeah,
- 26:42all things, and Sunday afternoons we've played. So I think we got
- 26:47a shot. But day after day after we'll get it in. And one
- 26:49other thing I do want to mention, Unlike in some years past, there's
- 26:52a lot of Canal valley flavor here. Charleston Catholic, GW, Buffalo Winfield.
- 26:56Let's go ahead and throw in Cabull Midlands for a little advance valley flavor.
- 27:00I mean we got there's a lot of local interest here too. How
- 27:03about Luke Salmon's stepping down. Luke Salmons, the head coach at Cabol Midlin,
- 27:07announced that he's going to Corbin, Kentucky. And that you the coach
- 27:10that was there for five years prior to or four years prior to Luke taking
- 27:15over. He stepped out, he retired, stepped down. He was forty
- 27:18six and five. That's a winning program there. But Luke's a winner.
- 27:23He was, he's been at caboin Middlon for thirteen years. They made the
- 27:26playoffs all thirteen years, never won a state championship. Was there twice,
- 27:30ran into some team called Martinsburg both times. And you know how that goes.
- 27:34Yeah, and before you know it, we're gonna be start. We'll
- 27:37start talking about high school football. By the way, it's ninety nine days
- 27:41until West Virginia plays Penn State. Not but you've got it marked down.
- 27:45That's the thing about sports. We're always looking ahead. We have to do
- 27:48something else, We're always looking ahead. And this is this is the year
- 27:52for the Cowboys Fred in the NFL. I'm just gonna go and throw that
- 27:53this is the year that what that they win the Super Bowl? I just
- 28:00I think it's always good on the laugh, Yeah it is, it is
- 28:03all right. Let me tell you something worse than that. I'm a guardian.
- 28:07I know what do they call him? Now? I'm a Redskins fan.
- 28:10Forget it, I'm a Washington's Cafe Redskins fan have been forever. Okay,
- 28:15why don't you went there? What are you? Washington? They're the
- 28:18commanders. Well, though there's a move on to maybe get that name back
- 28:22there, they should what are we talking about Come on, yeah, uh,
- 28:26let me get this in here. I was telling people early they need
- 28:29to download the all new Metro News TV app because now, in addition Fred
- 28:32the Sports Line, three Guys Talk Line, uh, and a bunch of
- 28:36other archive programs, a lot of documentaries that are on there, they could
- 28:38watch the state tournament, you know how specials to be. And we're gonna
- 28:41We're gonna have Chris Lawrence is going to be doing our sidelines for us.
- 28:45Chris does a fantastic job, and he's I'm going to give him a story
- 28:48to interview a young man, the second baseman for Martinsburg. His mother has
- 28:53been to every game, but now she has leukemia. Oh she's in Johns
- 28:56Hopkins and she says she's going to be watching the game on the Metro.
- 29:00That's awesome. I mean, it's not awesome, but it's a great And
- 29:03and Eric, I forget he's lesting any He said, I'm gonna find me
- 29:07a camera just so mom can know that I'm saying hi. So I'm going
- 29:11to make sure we interview that yet. Absolutely, you had a text here.
- 29:14Actually it was for Missus Pursinger. It says to missus Persinger. Your

- 29:37be watching, man. As always, I appreciate you. We'll talk to

- 35:52Governor Rimers. Senator Mansion was at the University of Charleston yesterday for opening of
- 35:59a thing in this facility. There quite impressive facility, by the way,
- 36:01Kat Skelton's got a great story about it on the website. His quote yesterday,
- 36:06this is a direct quote from Senator Mansion, Steve Williams talking about the
- 36:09Huntington mayor and the Democratic nominee. Steve Williams has been a friend of mine
- 36:14for forty years and we've worked together. I know how good he is,
- 36:17how competent he is, and how hard he will work in quotes. The
- 36:22Senator also went on to say he doesn't know how all the rumors about him
- 36:27running for governor begin. Well, Senator, they begin and really caught fire
- 36:36because there are a great number of Republicans who are not in favor of Patrick
- 36:39Morrissey being the next governor period now that could change. Mean, you know,
- 36:44there's time to rally the troops. It was an ugly, ugly primary,
- 36:49and it's happened in state politics, It's happened on national politics as well.
- 36:52I mean, hell, Nicki Haley is now saying she's going to vote
- 36:55for Trump, if that tells you anything. I am told that this whole
- 37:02thing of Mansion possibly running for governor was discussed extensively at a GOP gathering in
- 37:08flat Woods a couple of weeks ago, and as I mentioned, it was
- 37:13a lot of the talk last week at an event at the Greenbrier. And
- 37:16I've said since day one that Joe Manchin could in all of this with a
- 37:22simple statement by saying, I Am not running for governor. Now I know
- 37:27the gazette the story, you know, the headline of the Gazette this morning
- 37:30was Mansion Nix's rumors about governor run. And there are others that have said
- 37:34that. To my knowledge, he has still not issued a statement saying those
- 37:38exact words. And you know, he says he knowledged he told me last
- 37:45week I talked to him that he acknowledged it, that they were out there.
- 37:50I was not at the event in the University of Charleston yesterday. But
- 37:53based on what I have read, Senator, just say the words, just
- 38:00come out point blank, as my grandpa would say, flat footed, and
- 38:02just say the words. I'm sure it would make both Patrick Morrissey and Steve
- 38:07Williams feel a whole lot better about things. Ben Fields, by the way,
- 38:12it's a pretty good column about the whole thing in today's gazette. Mail

- 45:43Text says Dave, did you see a presser by Shelley Moore? Capita has
- 45:46gone viral, Capital said. One of our staffers discovered that in December,
- 45:51the EPA awarded a fifty million dollars grant to the IO to a group called
- 45:54Climate Justice Alliance, which engages in Prohamas, anti Israel, and anti Semitic
- 46:00activities. Capitol's staff went to the Climate Justice Alliance's website and found images included
- 46:04one of the bulldozers that went through the fence when Hamas attacked Israel on October
- 46:08seventh, Texas. No surprise, Slotnik is already in talking about the County
- 46:13Commission. Well, that'll be announced this evening five o'clock. That's when we'll
- 46:16find out who the replacement for Kent Carper on the Canaan County Commission will be.
- 46:21Seven names qualified, the ones who are all Democrats that live in the
- 46:23correct magisterial Districts commission President Lance Wheeler, Commissioner Bensolango. They will sit down
- 46:30and try to pick from that list. If they cannot agree, then names
- 46:32will be submitted to them by the Democratic Executive a Committee of Kanawa County.
- 46:37Again, I've had texts that said, well, this person's in and that
- 46:39person's in. So we got two. According to our listeners, we have
- 46:43two people that are definitely in. So we'll find out officially at five o'clock
- 46:47this afternoon. Will of course be watching the meeting and we'll have all the
- 46:51info online, in on the air, and I have already made arrangements or
- 46:54starting to make arrangements to have whoever the person is to be on the show
- 46:59next Monday. The Dave Island showing five eighty Live is brought to you apart
- 47:01by Morgan and Morgan with more than twenty billion dollars recovered. They believe that
- 47:06when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan and Morgan America's largest injury law
- 47:09firm. I want to talk about cell phones for a moment. I have
- 47:12just show's just been all over the place this morning. Apparently I haven't angered
- 47:16enough people, So let's a little bit of a can of worms as we
- 47:20close the show, because I love to do that. Is it time to
- 47:23take a look at banning cell phones and schools? I think it's time to
- 47:29look at banning cell phones in a lot of places, including restaurants and stores.
- 47:32But that's just me old guy David back for a second straight day.
- 47:36WSAZ dot com shared a story about a high school in Des Moines, Iowa
- 47:42that is banning students from using their phones, headphones, earbuds, et cetera
- 47:50at school. Now. It isn't an all in one time approach. They
- 47:55actually won't implement the program until next year, giving the kids, or more
- 48:00importantly, mommy and daddy, probably Mommy more than daddy time to adjust to
- 48:06it. As is true in most cases, the kids will probably be fine
- 48:09with losing the phones. It's the helicopter parents that are going to lose their
- 48:14crap over it. Studies have shown that the prolonged periods of being connected isn't
- 48:21good for one's mental health, and the average teenager uses some sort of social
- 48:27media more than eight hours a day eight hours. One of the school administrators
- 48:32called it reimaging the school without phones, which is kind of a novel concept.
- 48:40To those of us who grew up in the seventies and eighties or even
- 48:43sooner, who somehow left our houses at seven point thirty in the morning managed
- 48:46to go all day without talking to mommy or being connected, since we weren't
- 48:52connected anything in those days. The school is also encouraging parents not to give
- 48:59smartphones to their kids until at least age fourteen, and not allowing them on
- 49:07social media at all until age sixteen, which is something that almost every psychologist
- 49:15in America agrees with it. I was reading an article last night about John
- 49:20Fetterman Democrat, and a high ranking Republican whose name escapes me for some reason,
- 49:25that are kind of on the same kick. That's saying that the kids
- 49:29should not be allowed on social media at all. They're willing to legislate this
- 49:32until age sixteen. I think there's too many ways around that, but I
- 49:38think it might be a good idea in theory. And again, I think
- 49:43the kids will do better than what you think. I think it's the parents
- 49:47who can't text their kids that'll have bigger issues with it. And as is
- 49:52always the case, I like to preface subjects like this by saying I don't
- 49:57have kids, My wife and I are child free by choice, but when
- 49:59I do, i'd like to bring up subject like this. I do consult
- 50:02with my friends who have kids or now I'm at the age when people my
- 50:07age have grandkids. One of my good friends, who as a kid that
- 50:13just graduated from high school here in Kanawha County and he has a daughter who
- 50:17was still in high school, was telling me something I did not know when
- 50:21we had this discussion several months ago. How many apps that his kids have
- 50:27to use to keep up with things related to school. This, I mean,
- 50:34these are apps that they have to use to keep up with things like
- 50:37practices, et cetera. It's I guess that's something I hadn't thought about.
- 50:45So it's a teachable moment, you know, for me as as well.
- 50:52I do think that bless we are connected as a society, maybe even with
- 50:59adults, the better, the better we may be. How many times you
- 51:02walk into a restaurant and see two people or even a family out the dinner
- 51:07and the whole table two people to five are all buried in their phones.
- 51:14How many parents use tablets as a babysitter in a restaurant rather than teaching their
- 51:20kids. Teaching their kids to behave, or telling them they're gonna bust their
- 51:23butts if they don't behave, just easier to stick electronic device in them.
- 51:29I think sometimes I think it's what some parents, the way some parents look
- 51:32at it. I know, another subject for another time. We'll get into
- 51:37that in detail. At some point, is it time to ban cell phones
- 51:39in school? School administrators, medical and psychological experts say it may be text
- 51:47says any truth that Winfield High School coach Smolder will be the next head coach
- 51:52CAPL Midland. I don't have any idea Texas banning cell phones and schools and
- 51:58other places looking like a true Republican control freak. It's a texture. Our
- 52:05legislature should do something like no phones in the school thing for our school system
- 52:08statewide. Yep. But you're gonna have to get the adults off of them
- 52:13too, because the adults, and my and my experience in going into schools
- 52:16and I have gone into a lot, the teachers and the other staff are
- 52:20just as bad. It's not worth the kids. So you gotta look at
- 52:22that. Dave Island Show brought to you part by Pinnacle Consultants is a Pinnacle
