- 0:22All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:25Thursday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:28Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you for the next couple of hours
- 0:31to talk sports with you. And we appreciate you starting
- 0:34your afternoon with us. Back to the NFL tonight.
- 0:38What's coming up on our program? You wonder sort of why?
- 0:41Where is the guest list? Trent Condon today.
- 0:45Yes, we will be joined to kick things off.
- 0:48I, well, I just tweeted it out. Should I?
- 0:49I should. It's obviously Sterling from
- 0:51Paramount Sports. You'll join us at the bottom of
- 0:53the hour. I see your tweet.
- 0:54Thank you. And then we'll do the chicken
- 0:57coop contest. What does that mean?
- 0:58That means the four of you will have an opportunity to call in
- 1:01when we give you that cue to call.
- 1:03And somebody's going to win themselves a $50.00 gift
- 1:06certificate to use as they please at one of the three
- 1:09chicken coop locations throughout the Des Moines area.
- 1:12Then John Walters, the voice of Iowa State, will kick off our
- 1:15number 2 and Stephen M Siple will put a bow on the first.
- 1:21Were they four games into their season?
- 1:23And the Husker were the first three or four games of their
- 1:26season. We'll talk to, we'll talk to SIP
- 1:28must be must be game four. It was against Michigan, but
- 1:31we'll get the we'll get Siple in here.
- 1:33Talk about that, talk about the Big 10, where they go from here,
- 1:36some of the positives, what they can take away, etcetera,
- 1:38etcetera. And then we'll turn things over
- 1:42to Trent for his place of the day.
- 1:43Circus sports sponsor, those NFL little MLB tonight, a pretty
- 1:47good day in the world of sports. Would you watch last night?
- 1:52A lot of baseball. Yeah, me too because that was
- 1:54it. WNBA is off till Friday.
- 1:56Nothing there and wasn't watching any, though I flipped
- 1:59on I think the when I turned off the TV, it was on 2/21, CBS
- 2:02Sports Network. There's some soccer match on
- 2:05from God knows where last night. I did not get involved in that
- 2:08one. But baseball, not very good on
- 2:10the betting side, but boy, what a night it was.
- 2:12I'll watch the conclusion on MLB Network of the Pirates and the
- 2:15Reds as that one went into extra innings.
- 2:17And boy, talk about a missed opportunity for Cincinnati these
- 2:21last couple of nights. Up in the ninth with a home run,
- 2:25Buskins is unbelievable, isn't he?
- 2:27It truly is that this guy, if he stays healthy and you have to
- 2:31put that out there, unfortunately, he's just wonder
- 2:33what his place is going to be, what it's all said and done
- 2:36because his first two years are absolutely historical.
- 2:39And when it's all said and done, how many different uniforms has
- 2:42he worn? Right, Right.
- 2:43Don't think it's going to be a pirate uniform.
- 2:46For Pirates fans, I kind of feel the same way.
- 2:49It just seems like it's inevitable at some point.
- 2:52I hope they pay him and I hope the team gets better.
- 2:54He kind of hinted at that in an interview late in the season,
- 2:57sometime in this in this month that, you know, he wants to see
- 3:00how things are going in Pittsburgh.
- 3:02Obviously, he needs some help around him.
- 3:03This team needs to compete. They certainly have an ace.
- 3:06An ace of aces, maybe. Watch that of course, finally in
- 3:10the losing streak and looked pretty good in the process of
- 3:13doing that. Yeah, that's got going in a big
- 3:14way. Boyd was OK.
- 3:15Yeah, that's that was kind of it's funny.
- 3:18That's exactly what I had in my notes.
- 3:19He was OK Yep. And OK, all right, he's not
- 3:24going to be at the top of the rotation, but the Kate Horton
- 3:27news and Speaking of what's going on here, did you see who
- 3:31got? Old takes I did.
- 3:34Our boy Cappy. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:37Was he tweeted right after the draft, right?
- 3:40Kate Horton's draft about. I don't.
- 3:41Remember we got a guy with the career ERA in College of 4.5.
- 3:45Away we go. Or something or more of the
- 3:47we're so back. Yeah, we're so back.
- 3:49That's what it was, yeah. It worked out pretty well so
- 3:51we'll see where it goes. But I guess there is an MRI
- 3:54involved now and he hate those 3 letters.
- 3:56When it comes to any athlete, there's been nothing definitive
- 3:59come out. So Kyle, he'll just wait.
- 4:01Going to be activated potentially on Friday, is what
- 4:05they're saying. So tomorrow he'll be back out
- 4:07there as they wrap up at home against the Cardinals.
- 4:09Is there anything there? I mean, do you have hope that he
- 4:15can do anything? I understand it's calf injury,
- 4:18still swinging the bat, generating any kind of power
- 4:20with a calf injury that appears to be pretty significant.
- 4:24Is this more hopeful than anything that get his timing
- 4:27back and see I don't get to see a Kirk Gibson moment limping
- 4:31around? Yeah, that'd be great if that's
- 4:33if that's the case. My esteros is making this
- 4:35decision difficult. I think he's hitting the cover
- 4:38off the ball. It shouldn't.
- 4:39Be difficult. No, it shouldn't.
- 4:41This is a guy you gave up your first round pick, who made the
- 4:44Major League club in Houston in year #1 now he's got off to a
- 4:47good start. It hasn't, you know, it hasn't
- 4:49carried over, but you gave up a lot for one year at Kyle Tucker
- 4:53and he's a good player. Don't get me wrong, he's a good
- 4:55player, but I don't think he's going to be a good player in on
- 4:58the North Side of Chicago next year.
- 5:00I think his Cubs days are coming to an end.
- 5:02I really do. I think Casey's the guy, Sir.
- 5:05Seems like that to me. I You have to have a bond there,
- 5:09but. You know no you.
- 5:10Do there's something with council and the veterans and
- 5:13Turner and Santana. I know.
- 5:16And now with Tucker's injury and you have to keep Willie Castro,
- 5:19you would think on the playoff roster even much.
- 5:21He's sucked. He's been awful, terrible, but
- 5:24because he's that Swiss Army knife, he can play.
- 5:27A lot of positions. Seven positions for you.
- 5:29I mean, you, you have to have that guy, you would think on
- 5:32your play or at least one if there's a spot for that yet
- 5:38Turner and Santana and Tucker is going to be incredibly limited.
- 5:42So that takes up a roster's. Spot, you can't play the
- 5:44outfield. No, absolutely not.
- 5:46So he is only designated hitter. This this roster I think is
- 5:51going to be maybe a little bit more difficult than normally to
- 5:54figure out what they do. And one way or the other,
- 5:56council's going to hear it. Because if if there is a mistake
- 6:00on there, there's already already been a whole lot of
- 6:03finger pointing at Craig Council and what Murphy's done in
- 6:06Milwaukee, that maybe that was the brains of the operation.
- 6:09If this goes poorly, no. I think it was the brains of the
- 6:12operation I do. And if something happens where
- 6:14they they get swept out, lose quick, two games they're out
- 6:17against the Padres, comes up in a big 8th, 9th inning situation,
- 6:21the wrong guy comes to the plate because Justin Turner is on the
- 6:24whatever it is, he is going to be taking a lot of heat.
- 6:28Justin Turner can't be on the playoff roster.
- 6:30Yeah, he still travelled with the team and set up the team
- 6:33dinners when they're on the road, but he just.
- 6:34He loves them. I know I, I don't understand
- 6:38that. I mean, what's this guy done?
- 6:39What's this guy done? Boy, Matthew Bush had a game
- 6:42yesterday, didn't he? How can the ESPN booth the whole
- 6:47game called him Matthew Bush? How could and but not and not
- 6:51just what's his name Jack? What's the play by play guy?
- 6:54Nick Carl Ravish? Not Jack.
- 6:56Jack Edwards? Carl Ravish.
- 6:57I get those two mixed up. But nobody in the booth, nobody
- 7:00has anything. Nobody.
- 7:01Right. Perez said the same thing called
- 7:03a Matthew Bush. Yeah, he's just anyways.
- 7:07But yeah, good win for them. Good win.
- 7:10Matt Shaw with a home run yesterday.
- 7:11Palencia gets back. Do they have a decision there?
- 7:15I mean, is Palencia going to once he gets his call him sea
- 7:19legs back and he he was in the game last night for got a couple
- 7:22outs in the game. Does he automatically get the
- 7:269th inning? No, I don't think so.
- 7:28Is it Keller? He looked great less he looked
- 7:30great less he did. He looked excellent and exactly
- 7:33the guy that he had been for a long stretch throughout the
- 7:35year. His Kittridge done anything
- 7:38though, that you say he's out of that role.
- 7:42No, Neither is Keller, to be honest with you.
- 7:44They're both. Really.
- 7:45They're both above average and I think they're both suited for
- 7:49that role. In today's environment of
- 7:51baseball, this is that's not five years ago where, you know,
- 7:55we talked about 10 years ago, the Royals 789 now the 123 that
- 7:59they had with Wayne Davis and Herrera and who's the third guy
- 8:04that was outstanding. That's not the case anymore.
- 8:06There's so much more, much more mixing and matching and figuring
- 8:09it out. What do you go into it and just
- 8:11say we don't we don't have a closer.
- 8:13It's closer by committee or you still need to let the get.
- 8:16I don't know. I think that's a difficult spot.
- 8:18And another one, more ammunition for the Great Council haters.
- 8:21Because whatever he does in the bullpen, if that blows up, you
- 8:24know they're going to be ready. For him, no doubt.
- 8:26But I don't think so, no. I don't think that you designate
- 8:28now Palencia just we'll see how it goes.
- 8:31And that's the new world of MLB baseball.
- 8:33Let's let's get to Cal Raleigh, the Aaron Judge.
- 8:36Aaron Judge hits a couple yesterday.
- 8:37Cal Raleigh counters, hits a couple yesterday.
- 8:39We've been saying for a few weeks that the equation changes
- 8:43if Cal Raleigh hits to 60. All of those stats that Aaron
- 8:46Judge has in his favor, I'd go out the window if if Raleigh
- 8:52hits 60, Raleigh's now the favorite to win the MVP as we
- 8:56wake up this morning and he's got a chance to hit 62.
- 8:59I mean, he's got what, four games left?
- 9:01Do they play tonight? Let me, let me look, does
- 9:03Seattle have a have a game today or are they?
- 9:06They're home for the Rockies tonight.
- 9:08So they finished that series tonight and then they will
- 9:12obviously have a weekend set. So they've.
- 9:13Got they've got the Dodgers coming in.
- 9:15Oh, they got the Dodgers. So four games left for Raleigh
- 9:18to hit a couple more home runs. Is it settled?
- 9:21Is is, is Cal Raleigh going to be the guy?
- 9:24I think it's still up in the air.
- 9:26I really do. I I think it matters what
- 9:27happens this weekend and now with the Yankees in the lead in
- 9:32the East, I think that changes the equation the.
- 9:34Possibility because he's going to win.
- 9:35He's going to lead his team to a division championship.
- 9:38The possibility of maybe even running things down.
- 9:41I mean, they have a game lead over Seattle for the number one
- 9:43seed. How about that that and this
- 9:46Yankees team, how they've been throughout the year and the, you
- 9:48know, that they've gone through how they want it.
- 9:50Cash been gone, they want it. I mean, it's been all season
- 9:53long and here they are. She has to be the number one
- 9:55seed and the drivers. And they get Baltimore, right?
- 9:57They get Baltimore, Toronto gets Tampa to end things on.
- 10:01Toronto has the tiebreaker. But Toronto, they're tight.
- 10:04They're tight. I mean, 2 days ago I told you
- 10:06about Springer losing his ever loving mind.
- 10:07He should have was a bad call. But you get bad calls in
- 10:10baseball ended sports yesterday. Vladimir Guerrero, who never
- 10:14says a crossword, He got taught tossed.
- 10:17He got tossed. He was arguing.
- 10:19This team is tight. This team is not ready for prime
- 10:22time. I sound like Frank the Tank.
- 10:24But the Yanks are going to win the division.
- 10:27The Yanks are going to win the division.
- 10:29It sure looks like it because Toronto gets Tampa and the
- 10:32Yankees will finish up with the White Sox and then and then host
- 10:36Baltimore. Now, Baltimore can be a little
- 10:38bit tricky, so we'll obviously there's lots to play for, but
- 10:41Seattle and if they win the division out right, and I think
- 10:44that they're obviously they will.
- 10:45And Raleigh with that magic #60 I think he's done enough.
- 10:49I think that well, that will change some opinions.
- 10:52I mean, if somebody put yesterday you can only what,
- 10:58what fielder do you want in baseball?
- 11:00Between the two. Not between anybody.
- 11:02Just what fielder do you want in baseball?
- 11:03What catcher do you want in baseball this year?
- 11:06Well, right. All in cups of the I thought you
- 11:08were met defensively. Oh yeah, Yeah, It's called Cal
- 11:10Raleigh. And you've been saying the same
- 11:12with fielders. There's a bunch of good
- 11:13fielders. Yeah, right.
- 11:14But the but the first catcher that pops into your head is Cal
- 11:17Raleigh. For what he's done this year.
- 11:19Well, we'll see. I think he's going to win it.
- 11:22We were talking a couple of weeks ago.
- 11:23You jumped on it. I didn't at 5:00 to 1:00.
- 11:25I'm glad you did. And we first brought it up when
- 11:27it was 11 to. One, it was a big price.
- 11:28It was double digits at the time and thought that that 60 was the
- 11:31magic number bang there. He pops that off yesterday.
- 11:34All right, NFL tonight, Trent, I'm kind of semi excited for
- 11:38this game. Are you?
- 11:39I am You know what the reason is I'm starting to believe they're
- 11:44not Philadelphia. They're not the Packers, they're
- 11:48not the Lions, 'cause I'm about to elevate the Lions to that top
- 11:512. But in that next tier of NFC
- 11:56teams, might the Seahawks have a place on it?
- 12:00I don't know enough about this. Because they're, well, that's a
- 12:02good point. This will be a good watch
- 12:04tonight 'cause we'll get to see them for, you know, but the
- 12:06country will get to watch them tonight.
- 12:08But they've got a terrific defense.
- 12:13Sam Darnold is. OK, yeah, he's fine.
- 12:16He's fine, right? Kenneth Walker runs the ball
- 12:18hard. Smith Ojigba is a star,
- 12:21absolutely. Cooper Cup has been slighted and
- 12:24he's taking that as a slight trying to, you know, carry on
- 12:27his career. So I'm anxious to see this
- 12:29tonight and I think I would take Seattle in this game.
- 12:34I've been bleeding that way too. You know, the Cardinals were
- 12:36really banged up also coming into the game losing James
- 12:39Conner as they did last week. And the Cardinals.
- 12:42I I've watched a lot more Cardinals than I have Seahawks
- 12:44at this point. And though two and one and
- 12:46easily could be 3 and O the way let Carolina back into the game
- 12:50in Week 2 as we talked about that because that was my
- 12:52survivor play. They there's something missing.
- 12:57Kyler's not playing great. He's playing OK.
- 13:02It's not like there's a huge advantage at that spot with the
- 13:04injuries for Arizona. Short week have to talk about
- 13:07that every time when these Thursday night games and the
- 13:10team that has to travel. But I'm leaning with you.
- 13:12I I think Seattle because of the injuries is kind of the
- 13:14direction that I'm looking at. But yeah, getting a good look at
- 13:17both of these teams because I think they're at minimum both
- 13:19going to be in contention for a wild card spot.
- 13:21Yeah, I think so. I think you're probably right.
- 13:23Both these teams are good enough to hang around and who's?
- 13:25Going to win that division. Right question.
- 13:28It's tough Division I, I think it's the Rams and what we saw
- 13:31Sunday for 3 1/2 quarters that was eye opening.
- 13:35I mean, to do that early window in Philadelphia, they played and
- 13:38and they left points on the field.
- 13:40I mean, not just the last field goal that would have won it, but
- 13:42also throwing the course of the game.
- 13:44They had red zone trips that ended in field goals.
- 13:48This thing could have got out of hand.
- 13:50I mean that that's how much they controlled it for the 1st 3/4
- 13:52is. Our Is the Colts versus the RAM
- 13:56a sneaky good game of absolutely.
- 13:58I think it is too. I think it is too.
- 14:00Learning more definitely about that one because it ramps up in
- 14:04a big time way, and seeing what this Colts team now can do
- 14:06against a good team on the road defense, I think that's going to
- 14:09be something there. Yeah, that's one of my
- 14:10favorites. I think of Sunday in a very deep
- 14:12Sunday where we got all the baseball games. 2:00 Yep.
- 14:16Ish. First pitch?
- 14:17Yep. Coupled wins no Sunday Night
- 14:19Baseball because of closing day. The Ryder Cup.
- 14:21Have you seen the weather, by the way?
- 14:22Did you see pictures today? It's all underwater.
- 14:24Oh, really, Matt Rudy when? He wasn't kidding when he said
- 14:27yesterday when he joined us. I guess they got drenched.
- 14:31That event's going to be, again, nothing.
- 14:35It's not going to change as much as you want it to do.
- 14:39So this is a really fun event every other year, is it not?
- 14:42I really like this and I think this is going to mean something.
- 14:46The EUR, the European team is exactly the same, with one
- 14:49exception as the team that just trounced the Americans last
- 14:52year. That's part of the chicken coop
- 14:54contest coming up here in 1/2 hour as well.
- 14:57Who do you want? The Euros are red, white and
- 14:59blue. Can we jump over to the local
- 15:02front and the games on Saturday? So let's go first with the
- 15:07Hawkeyes as they welcome in Indiana.
- 15:10And there's the betting side. Let's leave that to the side for
- 15:14let's just talk about this game. What does Iowa, Is it realistic
- 15:19for Iowa even to hang around? Is it realistic to look at the
- 15:23way that they're built, the way that they play at home, that
- 15:27they can hang around against this team?
- 15:29He said the magic words at home. I like the way Gronowski's arrow
- 15:36is pointing. I think they get beat.
- 15:42I don't think I was going to win the football game.
- 15:45You know, we, we both thought at least at some point during this
- 15:49offseason that it was a blip on the radar for the Hoosiers,
- 15:53right? Nice story.
- 15:55You'll figure them out next year, right?
- 15:59You can't possibly do this two years in a row.
- 16:01You know what the process they're they're on the cusp, I
- 16:04think of, of doing that two years in a row.
- 16:08Everybody was looking for trying to find, you know, last year's
- 16:11Indiana. It might be this year's Indiana
- 16:13might be that team. So how does I will win the
- 16:16football game? How do they win the football
- 16:21game? A lot of times, special teams,
- 16:23yeah. I I think so.
- 16:25I just did our crossover edition with our locked on Hoosiers guy
- 16:27today. OK, what did he say?
- 16:29And what? What?
- 16:30Worries him. Nothing.
- 16:32I mean, they're, they're really, I mean, coming off of that game,
- 16:35you can understand it though. Sure, Illinois was a top ten
- 16:38team. They had a pump block in that
- 16:40game when I brought up special teams.
- 16:41Yeah, they did that last week against Illinois early in that
- 16:43football game. I think you're right though.
- 16:45That is start, start right there.
- 16:48They missed a field goal when I was watching the Indiana non
- 16:50conference games. It's like a 51 yarder off the
- 16:53crossbar. So you're gonna guess not the
- 16:54longest their field goal kickers kicked 30 extra points this
- 16:57year. Yeah.
- 16:57I saw that. It's just stupid.
- 16:59It's amazing. Just absolutely stupid going
- 17:02back and looking at some of Mendoza's numbers and going back
- 17:05even to the your previous A Cal. He is a guy that if you get
- 17:09pressure on him, he does get a little happy feet.
- 17:11You know the offensive line drop back three starters from last
- 17:14year, which was good. Indiana's and they also went
- 17:17out, went to the portal, they got a guy from Rotre Dame, a guy
- 17:19from Michigan. But you look at the grades from
- 17:22PFF Pro Football Focus. Yeah, I was.
- 17:24Offensive line dominates. And the numbers are not elite
- 17:28now for Indiana. For Indiana, they're good, very
- 17:31good. And it's a good offensive line.
- 17:32It would. It's like AB plus.
- 17:34Well, where does Illinois Illinois defensive line rank
- 17:37that the line that they were going up against last week?
- 17:39Are they above middle of the pack I.
- 17:41Was just looking at Indiana. I didn't.
- 17:43I didn't look at any Illinois numbers, but they're good, but
- 17:46they're not elite. So can you get that pressure
- 17:48going? Because who's Iowa's best
- 17:50defensive player? Eric Grace.
- 17:52And who's maybe 2:00 and 3:00 on that list?
- 17:56Probably these guys, Llewellyn and Herkett.
- 17:57Yeah, right beside him. So I was good upfront.
- 18:02They weren't able to generate against Rutgers, but they
- 18:05brought a little bit of extra pressure.
- 18:06That's another part Iowa has to win upfront defensively, slow
- 18:10them down, something goofy. But I think the Kinnock factor,
- 18:16maybe it's being overlooked by a lot of.
- 18:17People. No, not by me.
- 18:20We've seen it so many times, that crowd charged up in that
- 18:23environment, the close proximity to the sideline.
- 18:26Indiana hasn't gone through this.
- 18:28I've been to Columbus and as loud as that place is and it's
- 18:31louder than kidding, it's super. Loud Notre Dame last year, don't
- 18:33forget. They also did it when it was
- 18:3528°. It was put backed house and it
- 18:37was it wasn't sure wasn't game one of the big.
- 18:39Game two of the Big 10 was a playoff.
- 18:42I would anticipate, I've been to Notre Dame as well, that the
- 18:46crowd on Saturday, you're marking decibels will be louder
- 18:50than what they saw in December against Notre Dame.
- 18:52It's cold, you got your gloves on, it's muffled.
- 18:55The environment that they're going to see Saturday is going
- 18:57to be different. Coupled with offensive line,
- 19:00with new pieces, a quarterback that really hasn't played an
- 19:03environment like this. He went to Auburn in the non
- 19:05conference two years ago with Cal.
- 19:07But this is going to be different.
- 19:09The crowd also has to be a big factor.
- 19:12Region, make a big play, you know, get special teams win.
- 19:16No more operational errors. Field goal kicking has to be.
- 19:19You don't have to play perfect, but you have to play clean.
- 19:21You can't make a ton of mistakes.
- 19:23Absolutely. Drops need to go, those kind of
- 19:25things. That's what needs to happen.
- 19:27Yeah, I can see that. But we're talking loud a lot and
- 19:31going through the numbers for Indiana.
- 19:33It's just out. It's just crazy.
- 19:35Not only are they second in the country in total offense, the
- 19:37third in the country in total defense.
- 19:40They're legit, man. They're absolutely legit.
- 19:42I think they're, I think they're a threat to win the conference.
- 19:45They're just said that, yeah, I wouldn't have said that.
- 19:48Their schedule is going to be ramping up starting Saturday.
- 19:52Conversely, Iowa State, what do you what do you expect to see
- 19:54from Iowa State, Arizona? Speaking of, well, just
- 19:57mentioned the defense for Indiana.
- 19:59That's the hidden secret with Arizona.
- 20:00Everybody's talking about Fafida.
- 20:02He looks like the guy we saw two years ago.
- 20:04They look back. But that defense, you know,
- 20:06going back in and watching as I got home Friday night, watching
- 20:09the K State Arizona game, that was my take away.
- 20:11You know, they were making plays.
- 20:13They were making incredibly difficult.
- 20:15Avery Johnson, unfortunately kind of looks like the Avery
- 20:17Johnson that I guess we've grown accustomed to now the last year
- 20:20and a half and how disappointing he has been.
- 20:22But that Arizona defense is going to be good.
- 20:26And I hope for Iowa State. They don't have a kicker, don't
- 20:28forget. They don't have a kicker and
- 20:30that fourth and four from the 28 yard line, instead of kicking a
- 20:3545 yarder, we got to go for it. I think you do.
- 20:38And then it's an empty possession.
- 20:39You don't get it. And I didn't how much that can
- 20:41change the equation. Campbell mentioned something on
- 20:44the press conference earlier this week that really drew my
- 20:48attention. He was talking about the
- 20:49transfer receivers. As we found out, both Soul and
- 20:52Townsend Mistime, they were both banged up during camp and we've
- 20:57seen them more and certainly was so old.
- 20:58We've seen a bunch more of him kind of growing and getting more
- 21:02snaps here the last couple of times out because he can be a
- 21:05different and they're so good at identifying those guys.
- 21:08I just, I can't believe that they completely swung and missed
- 21:11at another one of the portal receivers that they went after
- 21:14after being so good at it. Find it out.
- 21:16We missed on this one. I think there's still something
- 21:19there because they need wide. Outs well, I think they grabbed
- 21:21these guys early in the in the process too.
- 21:23So right, they they found their guys and they got their guys
- 21:26yes, speaking to get their guys, they got Brickell back and
- 21:28that's huge. That is absolutely huge.
- 21:31Tyler Moore's ascension. He's been really good, Trenton,
- 21:33and he's athletic and the thing that caught my eye, in fact, I
- 21:36wrote in my notes after they played two weeks ago, he can
- 21:38run. Yes, he can.
- 21:40He's always a runner and definitely that showed up.
- 21:42So those would be a few things that I point to.
- 21:45I think this is more likely to be 23/20/2017 type of game as
- 21:51opposed. To because they don't have a.
- 21:52Kicker 3430 You know, I I think this is going to be more of a
- 21:55slugfest. If it's a close game, I think
- 21:58it's going to be more of those tight, more defensive battle
- 22:01than a big shootout. I could see that.
- 22:03Yep, I can see that number's 6 1/2 I think as we sit here
- 22:06today. Speaking of numbers, Lee
- 22:08Sterling, we'll talk about that from Paramount Sports.
- 22:11Chicken coop contest is coming up.
- 22:14We'll give 4 of you an opportunity to win some chicken
- 22:16coop grub. That's about 12:45.
- 22:19Lee Sterling scheduled to join us next.
- 22:21Miller and Condon underway on Thursday.
- 22:23Glad you're with us. It's Des Moines sports station
- 22:25One O 6.3, KXNO and the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:40Hi, welcome back Millary Condon. Just past 1230 on a Thursday
- 22:44chicken coop contest coming up here in about 15 minutes.
- 22:48Be listening for your cue to call.
- 22:49But right now, let's talk to our guy Lee Sterling, Paramount
- 22:53Sports, paramountsports.com for Lee, got a handful of games to a
- 22:57pint on then his game of the week.
- 22:58By the way, the game of the week is Minnesota and Rutgers, a Big
- 23:0210 tilt, Minnesota's a 4 1/2 point favorite.
- 23:05And that one, we will get to it here coming up at the end of our
- 23:08little conversation. Hello, Lee, Sterling, Trenton,
- 23:11Ken, how are you? I'm great, I'm great.
- 23:14I mean, what a week this might. I know the first weekend in
- 23:17college football was up there, but this weekend might be
- 23:20better, especially the afternoon, mid afternoon and
- 23:23evening games and then the NFL games.
- 23:26I mean, the first week of college football, there's no NFL
- 23:29Philadelphia 3, no Philly and three, no Tampa Bay, Baltimore
- 23:33and Kansas City, Green Bay at Dallas.
- 23:37I mean, doesn't get much better than that.
- 23:39No, it's a pretty good slate, no doubt.
- 23:41And we got a couple of big ones here in our state.
- 23:43Let's start in Ames, where the Cyclones welcome in Arizona.
- 23:47Iowa State hasn't reached that threshold of sevens.
- 23:50Been hanging just inside of that number as Iowa State five and a
- 23:54half, 6 1/2 half point favorite right in that range.
- 23:56Arizona comes to town. As we've talked about, it's not
- 23:59just Fafita quarterback. They're bringing a defense with
- 24:01them. Yeah, they they certainly have
- 24:04improved. They're they're playing defense,
- 24:06getting pressure, they're top 20 and pressures and they are also
- 24:11getting negative plays. Seventy 74th is Iowa State here
- 24:18struggling with sacks allowed. So first down going to be very
- 24:22important. You got to get four or five
- 24:24yards there. If they do, they'll have some
- 24:27success and Arizona's even running the football.
- 24:30But I think there's also certain levels and I just think that
- 24:33this Iowa State team if they come to play is going to give
- 24:37you their best luck. Arizona did beat Kansas State
- 24:40and and did it pretty easily. They held them to just 193 yards
- 24:44and eight first downs. But this, the Kansas State team
- 24:47I think has quit on the season. So in the last year on the road
- 24:51lost the Kansas State by 2422 to BYU, 44 at UCF and 21 to TCU.
- 25:01The road has been their bugaboo and it's going to be it again
- 25:04here said this game is about levels.
- 25:06Cyclones find a way to win and cover here 2820.
- 25:10All right, let's stay in state. Indiana pays a visit to Kinnick
- 25:13Stadium middle of the afternoon. Hoosier is an impressive winner.
- 25:16Last time they clobbered Illinois.
- 25:17Last time out, they're just over a touchdown.
- 25:20Favorite 7 1/2 Hoosiers on the road at the Hawks.
- 25:24Yeah, and they haven't played these teams since 2021.
- 25:27Indiana does look as good or better even than last year.
- 25:30Fernando Mendoza seen a couple different, you know, poles they
- 25:35put out. Looks like he's probably a top
- 25:36three guy, but you know, they just sometimes everything goes
- 25:40right in the game and everything goes wrong like it did for
- 25:42Illinois. So give Indiana credit here.
- 25:45But I think I was offense may not.
- 25:48Even though they're not on that elite level that we've come to
- 25:51hope for, they're still more than good.
- 25:53They ranked 24th and points scored 20th and yards per play a
- 25:57lot, lot better than the last couple seasons here.
- 26:01I just think that if they can decide with defense, you know,
- 26:05limit them on 1st down, you, you limit them to 2-3 yards, they're
- 26:08going to have some 2nd and 3rd and longs and, and that's where
- 26:11Iowa's defense is at their best here.
- 26:13So they'll get a couple sacks too, I believe.
- 26:16So I think special teams could play a big part in this game.
- 26:20Home crowd. I, I think this line would have
- 26:23been 4 1/2 if Indiana would have won the game by touchdown, 2
- 26:26touchdowns last week. But because of that huge, huge
- 26:29blowout, the line is puffed up to 7 1/2.
- 26:32And I think it's going to close at 8:00.
- 26:34I'm going to take the underdog here.
- 26:36I don't know if they're going to win the game outright, but I
- 26:39like Iowa plus the seven and a half I of Indiana winning the
- 26:42game 2624. Iowa gets the cover in that one.
- 26:46Continuing in the Big 10, we go to Seattle.
- 26:49That's right, Seattle for a Big 10 team.
- 26:51Washington. The Buckeyes go on the road for
- 26:53the first time. Tough environment.
- 26:55What 18 game-winning streak streak for the Huskies inside of
- 26:59their stadium? They'll be charged up.
- 27:01We know teams travelling W. It's not been pretty north of a
- 27:04touchdown here. Buckeyes favored by 8 1/2.
- 27:07Yeah, and, and the Buckeyes have three incredible receivers.
- 27:12I think it's the best trio of receivers.
- 27:16And Smith, Innocent Tate. Now, Washington does have two
- 27:20tall, rangy cornerbacks. That's probably the strength of
- 27:23their defense. So maybe for a while, you know,
- 27:26they can keep them in check. But I think eventually Ohio
- 27:29State and Julian saying who it was not his fault they only
- 27:32scored 14 points in that first game against Texas.
- 27:34He had five or six passes drop, probably would have had close to
- 27:38100 more yards of passing. So I I think they're going to
- 27:41have success against this Washington defense.
- 27:43This Washington defense has already given up to Colorado
- 27:46State and Washington State 21 and 24 points.
- 27:49And those are bottom feeders in their conference and in the Pack
- 27:542. So hey, I think that Damon
- 27:57Williams is great. And here's another guy that if
- 27:59Washington can somehow win this game, he can catapult himself
- 28:03into the top three of the Heisman.
- 28:05So Damon William is an exciting quarterback, only about 511 and
- 28:09Satcher, but very dynamic. He's got a really good receiver
- 28:13in Denzel Boston and a running back in Jonah Coleman, but too
- 28:16many holes other than that. So I I think eventually Ohio
- 28:20State pulls away 3524. Big 10 of the whiteout
- 28:25conditions Penn State. Oregon comes across the country
- 28:28this heck of a game, at least on paper.
- 28:30Penn State's a field goal favorite under the whiteout in
- 28:32Happy Valley. How do you see it, Lee?
- 28:35Well, I think Oregon's very talented and they decided to go
- 28:38with a young quarterback, Dante Moran.
- 28:40So far he's been great, but the question is how's he going to
- 28:43perform in front of over 100,000 rabid fans in this whiteout?
- 28:47Penn State also had the buy to prepare.
- 28:50I think that's important. It's not the running game that
- 28:53was a problem last year was the passing game.
- 28:54They ran for 292 yards on Oregon in the Big 10 championship game,
- 28:59but still lost by 84537. I think they will have success
- 29:04again running the football. Oregon's run defense ranked just
- 29:0750th in the country. They haven't been tested here.
- 29:10Nicholas Singleton and also K Tron Allen both come back, but
- 29:14the difference this year is Trevor Pena was added from
- 29:18Syracuse and K Ron Hudson from USC, two receivers that do get a
- 29:23little bit of separation. Lesser receivers got no
- 29:26separation already. They have 27 total catches here.
- 29:30But The X Factor is Jim Knowles. That's right, defensive
- 29:34coordinator Jim Knowles. He used to be at Oklahoma State,
- 29:37then went to Ohio State last year to Ohio State.
- 29:40He faced Oregon twice. The first game didn't fare so
- 29:44well in Eugene, but the second game he came with all new blitz
- 29:48packages and they shut down the here.
- 29:52I think they do it again. I think Jim Knowles knows how to
- 29:56win here with a very good defense.
- 29:59So I'm going to take Penn State at home in the white out here,
- 30:022417. Let's wrap things up with a 5
- 30:05pack of picks from Lee Sterling in the NFL.
- 30:08An important one is one of these teams will fall to one in three
- 30:11Kansas City hosting the Ravens. Baltimore, a 2 1/2 point choice.
- 30:16Last year, Kansas City was a 2 1/2 point favorite to open the
- 30:20year against Baltimore. Now there are 2 1/2 point
- 30:24underdog. I don't think that much has
- 30:25changed here. So I think Kansas City got back
- 30:28to mojo last week at the Giants. I think the Giants might have
- 30:32the best defensive line in the NFL.
- 30:34Not much of anything else, but a really good defensive line.
- 30:38Only allowed two sacks in that game.
- 30:40Probably here for Baltimore. Really good offense, but the
- 30:42defense not good enough and they've been on the field a long
- 30:46time. Coming after a Monday night game
- 30:48with six minutes remaining in the first half on Monday night,
- 30:51Baltimore's offense only at 5 minutes of time of possession
- 30:54here. Baltimore.
- 30:56Too many turnovers. I like Kansas City at home.
- 30:59Rome came favored Kansas City straight up 2420 all.
- 31:04Right, your game of the week, a Big 10 tilt.
- 31:06Minnesota and Rutgers are going to do battle.
- 31:09Minnesota's about a four and a half point failure.
- 31:10If the audience wants more information on this game, Lee,
- 31:13what should they do? Well most people feel this game
- 31:17is pretty much a toss up game between Minnesota, Rutgers.
- 31:20I think there's a clear right side winner and 1st 10 callers.
- 31:24Call 800-400-9741. I'll give them the game for
- 31:28free. Also give them the game tonight.
- 31:30Arizona and Seattle in the NFL. So you want to get 2 free
- 31:34winners. Call 800-400-9741 right now and
- 31:39we're done on a roll. 5 and O Sunday and Monday in the NFL.
- 31:43You want to hop on board. We've got specials entire week,
- 31:46weekend through Monday night of our phone service.
- 31:48Just $97.00. Just one place.
- 31:52paramountsports.com. Lee, have a great weekend.
- 31:54Thank you. Talk to you next week.
- 31:57You too guys. Take care.
- 31:58Thank you. Yep, Lee Sterling, Paramount
- 32:00Sports as we check in on his plays of the week.
- 32:03Do you like them? Is there one that you disagree
- 32:04with more so? A couple of leans the other way.
- 32:08It is interesting he's grab grabbing the Hawkeyes and
- 32:10brought up what we talked about at the beginning of the week
- 32:12where Iowa, now those point spreads were out there for
- 32:15FanDuel and DraftKings, the big books and Sirca knew that and
- 32:19they still laid the four. Advanced lines you mean?
- 32:21Yes. And they still laid laid the
- 32:23four. I heard Tom Caker mention they
- 32:26were out in Jersey getting ready for the game Friday night.
- 32:28They already had the FanDuel had the Indiana, Iowa game.
- 32:31It was 3 at that time. Really.
- 32:34I understand that performance Saturday.
- 32:35Can you replicate that? This is college kids.
- 32:38How many let downs have we seen? And you could say all the right
- 32:41things. They have a by coming up though,
- 32:42do they? Not they do, but then Oregon
- 32:43afterwards. How many of those kids are
- 32:45looking forward to the Ducks? Certainly a bigger name brand.
- 32:49It's just probably looking forward to the by, right?
- 32:52There, we've seen it happen too often.
- 32:56There's nothing that I've seen with my eyeballs that make me
- 32:58believe that Iowa can win this game.
- 33:00But they hang around, think Lee might be on to something.
- 33:04He thinks he'll close about 8. It's 8 now.
- 33:05It's at least it was this morning.
- 33:07Let me get the update. It was 8 at circa this morning,
- 33:09was it not? It is 8 at circa, 7 1/2
- 33:13everywhere. South point's at 8.
- 33:15Circa's at 8. Seven and a half everywhere.
- 33:17Meanwhile in Ames, 6 1/2 across the others, a six at the South
- 33:23.6 at the South Point. Everywhere else is 6 1/2.
- 33:27Iowa State favored just under a touchdown in that one.
- 33:31I think that's been the buyback any time that it's touch seven,
- 33:34I saw a couple. Of it goes right down.
- 33:35Yeah, right away, Yeah, there's a ton of buyback right away in
- 33:38that one. And I'm I'm sure that there's
- 33:42the tipping point I think was 8 1/2 was the highest that I saw
- 33:44this week. And every time it was a nine
- 33:46actually at circa now that I look, that was yesterday
- 33:48afternoon. It did reach 9 before the
- 33:51buyback happened in the Hawkeyes.
- 33:52Yeah. Well, so maybe he's probably in
- 33:55play for the weekend. What's your favorite college
- 33:57other than the big two? What?
- 33:59What's your favorite college game?
- 34:00Do you have one at the weekend? That if you weren't watching
- 34:02Iowa, you weren't watching Iowa State, you'd be watching what?
- 34:07So I can't have Georgia, Alabama or Oregon, Penn State?
- 34:09Well, because they're on the same, but say they're at a
- 34:11different time, different window.
- 34:13It's the white out. You have me too.
- 34:15Yeah, me too. Plus it's Oregon going there,
- 34:17just something different. Is it too?
- 34:18Early in the year for the white out.
- 34:20No. I think it is it wasn't cool and
- 34:23a little chill in the air a little more OK and maybe some
- 34:25white out following on falling on the white out.
- 34:28Late October when I was there for the white out, it rained all
- 34:31day long. 2009, yeah. I remember and that was
- 34:35seemingly cold too. It was, it wasn't awful.
- 34:39It was like in the mid 50s. It wasn't like I thought.
- 34:41It was in the 40s. It wasn't.
- 34:42No, it wasn't a cold rain because we were out there in
- 34:46like our our sweatshirts were drenched.
- 34:47Sure, we're playing. Bags you to wear a sweatshirt.
- 34:50By the way, the rainstorm. So slugging beers and playing
- 34:53bags in the pouring rain just didn't care.
- 34:55But yeah, I I do remember though, it wasn't awful.
- 34:58Like it wasn't that chilly factor that you normally get
- 35:00with. That, you know, maybe of the of
- 35:02the Big 10 slate this week in the game that I'm most intrigued
- 35:05by as far as getting a graph, Ohio State on the road to
- 35:09Washington, yes, because Ohio State, are they really the best
- 35:13team in the Big 10? Do you believe that?
- 35:15Or is it now? Yeah, I I'm not a believer in
- 35:18Penn State. They have to show me.
- 35:20You know, are you believer in Oregon?
- 35:22Yeah. Much better than Indiana.
- 35:23Yes, much better than I thought. Are you?
- 35:25Believer in USC. How you you know I like you but.
- 35:28I see. For months I had that one, yeah.
- 35:31I love their offense and I still do that defense.
- 35:33So not a foregone conclusion that the Buckeyes are going to
- 35:36represent the Big 10, fair to say.
- 35:38Not a foregone conclusion. Absolutely.
- 35:40Conference is too deep. Yeah.
- 35:43That's really good. It's really good.
- 35:44All right, we'll take your time out.
- 35:45But while before we do that, we will open up the phone lines and
- 35:49welcome 4 of you to play in the chicken Coop giveaway.
