- 0:53seven thirty p.m eastern
- 0:54time tonight in the first
- 0:57game of the four
- 0:59quarterfinal matchups to
- 1:00happen tonight and tomorrow
- 1:04when I was a kid I loved
- 1:06that my birthday was on new
- 1:07year's day and I could just
- 1:09hang out and watch football all day long
- 1:14And the fact that my Nittany
- 1:17Lions are in the playoffs
- 1:19and they get to play around my birthday.
- 1:23My birthday is not until tomorrow.
- 1:25Celebrate tonight, hopefully,
- 1:26with a victory.
- 1:27Get to enjoy tomorrow with all that.
- 1:29So super stoked about that.
- 1:33Good afternoon, Corey, Jay Birch, Holly,
- 1:36Jody.
- 1:37What's going on, guys?
- 1:39And happy anniversary, Jay Birch.
- 1:42Today is his thirty-year
- 1:43wedding anniversary.
- 1:44I'm getting close, man.
- 1:46I'm right behind you.
- 1:46I am at twenty-seven.
- 1:52Twenty-seven years, I think.
- 1:53This May.
- 1:56I should probably do the math more.
- 1:58But yeah.
- 2:01Holly says,
- 2:02happy anniversary to Jay Birch
- 2:03and an early happy birthday to me.
- 2:05Thank you so much.
- 2:06I'm pretty stoked about it.
- 2:10Got a lot of cool plans for the year.
- 2:15And Corey has made it six years.
- 2:19Hey, got to start somewhere, man.
- 2:22I remember those first years, man.
- 2:25Those were probably harder
- 2:26than the later years.
- 2:30So super stoked for tonight.
- 2:35Hopefully Penn State plays well.
- 2:37Their defense can tackle the
- 2:40best running back in the country.
- 2:44Really stoked about that.
- 2:47I think they can do it.
- 2:48If they can tackle him early,
- 2:52then the game becomes much
- 2:53easier because they are
- 2:54kind of a one-trick pony.
- 2:56But yeah.
- 3:00so uh really stoked for that
- 3:03I know I'm saying stoked a
- 3:04lot I don't know why I'm
- 3:05that's happening uh today's
- 3:07the last day I work for a
- 3:08week uh because we have
- 3:10some procedures coming up
- 3:11and I just took a couple
- 3:12days off in between uh but
- 3:14yeah so today's my last
- 3:15work day so this is my last
- 3:17work lunch hour we'll do a
- 3:19couple more uh throughout
- 3:20the week as we kind of uh
- 3:23finish up the the year and
- 3:24start the new one um but I
- 3:26wanted to talk about a few things today
- 3:31While we were on the air
- 3:31last night with Sunday
- 3:33Night CrossFit Talk on a Monday,
- 3:36which was a great show,
- 3:37lots of participation last night,
- 3:39getting some workouts in on
- 3:40our traveling gauntlet-style workout.
- 3:46Now they're starting to flow
- 3:47in a little bit more,
- 3:49and you can get your name into the...
- 3:53You can get your name into
- 3:54the drawing for one of our
- 3:56either water bottles right there.
- 3:59It's got the little pop-up straw on it.
- 4:01It's stainless steel.
- 4:02Keeps your drink cold.
- 4:04And it's got the cool
- 4:06Clydesdale Media logo on it.
- 4:08You can see that there.
- 4:11we also have the the the
- 4:13coffee mug uh same color
- 4:15same stainless steel makeup
- 4:17just a little small smaller
- 4:19so if you win you get to
- 4:21pick which one of those you
- 4:23want and we'll get that
- 4:24sent out to you uh but we
- 4:25have we now have a handful
- 4:27of entries uh into the
- 4:29traveling gauntlet and if
- 4:31you go back and listen to
- 4:32last night's show at the
- 4:33very end we get into like
- 4:34much more detail about what
- 4:36we are trying to accomplish
- 4:37here what we think someone should do
- 4:40And what like CrossFit
- 4:43should do or some
- 4:44organization should do to
- 4:46get the community to come
- 4:47back together and do some events as a big,
- 4:50large community.
- 4:52But we get into more details
- 4:54about the details of all
- 4:56that and what we're kind of looking for.
- 4:59So make sure to check that out.
- 5:00And it's probably in the last ten minutes,
- 5:04the last ten minutes of the
- 5:06show from last night.
- 5:07If you want to know more
- 5:08about that and how to enter
- 5:10to win one of those prizes.
- 5:13So Judy always needs reminded by Jody.
- 5:16It's nice to have that
- 5:18personal concierge that
- 5:20takes care of you.
- 5:20But is the notifier not working for you,
- 5:24Judy?
- 5:27My notifier didn't work today either,
- 5:29actually,
- 5:30because usually I get a pop-up
- 5:31on this other screen saying
- 5:32that I'm going live,
- 5:33but I didn't get it today.
- 5:36So that's weird.
- 5:39So the main thing I wanted
- 5:40to talk about today is loyalty.
- 5:43And where has it gone?
- 5:45And if I'm doing some self-evaluation,
- 5:50I would say that one of my
- 5:51fatal flaws is that I am
- 5:54loyal to a fault.
- 5:56I will hang on for longer than I should,
- 6:02even when things aren't working.
- 6:06So...
- 6:10But, but because I'm that way,
- 6:13when people aren't loyal, I get,
- 6:14I get upset.
- 6:15And I,
- 6:16especially when it's with my friends
- 6:19involved.
- 6:20And so what I want to talk
- 6:21about is last night, the barbell spin,
- 6:24maybe it was last night.
- 6:24I don't know, but I'm,
- 6:26I'm behind on my Instagram.
- 6:28So
- 6:37where he said no underdogs
- 6:39in the bio and it's Ricky
- 6:41Gerrard's athlete profile on Instagram.
- 6:48And then, you know,
- 6:49the little emoji like this.
- 6:58And so why,
- 7:00why this affects me so much in this case,
- 7:03um,
- 7:03I'm going to have to be a little bit
- 7:04talking elite fitness here and I,
- 7:07and I don't mean to be,
- 7:08but I need to do it for context.
- 7:10So in I was at the west
- 7:12coast classic in Las Vegas.
- 7:15After that was over,
- 7:16I was invited to dinner at
- 7:17Justin Kotler's house with
- 7:19him and his wife and his family.
- 7:22At that dinner, Cat was with me.
- 7:26We were there having dinner,
- 7:28and they approached Cat and
- 7:30I with a question.
- 7:32If given the opportunity to
- 7:34coach Ricky Garrard,
- 7:36would it make sense to do so?
- 7:40it was a very tough decision
- 7:41for justin to make and what
- 7:44I learned that night is he
- 7:45was actually approached by
- 7:46ricky to be a coach um and
- 7:49if you remember he's coming
- 7:50off a four-year suspension
- 7:51for peds um he was trying
- 7:54to rebuild an image um and
- 7:59it was it was a difficult
- 8:00decision to say do I take
- 8:03this person on and at the
- 8:04time justin was coaching
- 8:06bethany danielle and carrie
- 8:10as well as a handful of others.
- 8:13And they were,
- 8:14they had just swept the West
- 8:16coast classic.
- 8:17Those three women took first, second,
- 8:19and third at that semifinal that year.
- 8:23So Justin is at the top of his game.
- 8:26Ricky comes to him and asked
- 8:27him to be his coach.
- 8:28And he has to make that
- 8:29decision with all the
- 8:32baggage that Ricky brought to the table.
- 8:35He makes that decision to take on Ricky.
- 8:39And since then,
- 8:40when Ricky has been healthy,
- 8:42he has podiumed at the games.
- 8:44He has won Waterpalooza.
- 8:47He has done all those things.
- 8:50What I find...
- 8:52infuriating is now now it
- 8:55seems and this is not
- 8:56official this is just the
- 8:58barbell's been putting this
- 8:59out we've heard nothing
- 9:01from ricky so if he is not
- 9:03leaving underdogs then all
- 9:05of this is moot but if he
- 9:08leaves underdogs and you
- 9:10have a person that stuck
- 9:12their neck out for you when
- 9:14you were at your lowest
- 9:16trying to come back and
- 9:17rebuild your image in the
- 9:18sport and you did so
- 9:21You and him put together a
- 9:23package where you came in
- 9:25and you were successful and
- 9:27you finished second at the games.
- 9:30You podiumed.
- 9:31You won Wadapalooza twice.
- 9:33You've done all these things.
- 9:36The only times you have not
- 9:38performed well are when you
- 9:40decided to go mountain biking,
- 9:42jump off a ramp,
- 9:44and break your collarbone, shoulder,
- 9:46whatever it was.
- 9:48or when you were doing chad
- 9:49came off the box turned
- 9:50your ankle and it forced
- 9:52you to change the way uh
- 9:54you could perform through
- 9:56the rest of the games now
- 10:00uh you're deciding to go
- 10:02with another camp if the
- 10:04rumors are true to proven
- 10:07Now, I get it.
- 10:08Tia is in Australia right now.
- 10:10You get to train with her there.
- 10:12Jay Crouch, Maddie Sturt.
- 10:15It's a pretty good training
- 10:16situation there.
- 10:19But Justin has not failed you in anything.
- 10:25And I posted my feelings to the post,
- 10:31and I'll show that real quick.
- 10:32Because someone responded,
- 10:34and I have this platform,
- 10:35so I'm going to respond back.
- 10:38Uh, and so you can see here's my,
- 10:43when you're at your lowest
- 10:44and people help lift you up,
- 10:45your answer should not be
- 10:46to turn your back on that person.
- 10:48If true, no longer a fan.
- 10:51So one of the responses was
- 10:54Clydesdale Media,
- 10:55change is not always bad.
- 10:56A change of scenery,
- 10:57training with the GOAT
- 10:58could be a great opportunity.
- 11:00Wouldn't call it turning
- 11:00your back on someone called growth.
- 11:03I don't know how this is growth.
- 11:05You have been completely
- 11:06successful when healthy
- 11:08with Justin Kotler.
- 11:10And what athlete has gone to
- 11:12train with Tia
- 11:14Other than Matt Frazier,
- 11:16who was already successful
- 11:19before he went there,
- 11:21what other athlete that has
- 11:22gone to train with Tia been
- 11:25successful or gotten to a
- 11:26point where Ricky wants to get to?
- 11:30Didn't work for Saxon Pancheck?
- 11:32Didn't work for Brooke Wells?
- 11:36You name the athletes,
- 11:38they have not done well
- 11:39once they have gone and
- 11:43worked out with Peruvian.
- 11:47So, I...
- 11:56I don't know.
- 11:57I'm just at a loss.
- 11:58I know that in this world today,
- 12:00loyalty is not what it used to be.
- 12:04You know,
- 12:04my dad worked at the same company
- 12:05for forty plus years.
- 12:07That just isn't even heard of today.
- 12:09Right.
- 12:10We bounce from the best
- 12:11opportunity for ourselves.
- 12:12And maybe that's what he
- 12:14feels like he's doing.
- 12:15But it just seems like when
- 12:17someone took a chance on
- 12:18you to walk away seems to be.
- 12:24uh not not a great decision
- 12:28uh jody said maybe cutler
- 12:32increased his coaching
- 12:33price um I don't think it
- 12:36is a coaching price I think
- 12:38it is a percentage of uh
- 12:41what the athlete earns but
- 12:42I don't don't quote me on
- 12:44that I think I heard that
- 12:45somewhere at one point uh
- 12:47jay birch says ricky might
- 12:49be a little too arrogant to be loyal
- 12:52Judy Reed says,
- 12:53maybe he was kicked out like DBE was.
- 12:56I don't think anybody could
- 12:57be kicked out like DBE was.
- 12:59And that's just because I
- 13:01know a little bit of the backstory there.
- 13:11Aaron Frazier says,
- 13:12Jay Crouch has certainly
- 13:12made some big leaps in the past two years,
- 13:14but don't think he has the
- 13:15same potential.
- 13:17I wouldn't disagree with you,
- 13:18but I don't think that Jay
- 13:19trains with Tia all the time.
- 13:21I think that Jay and Maddie
- 13:24train together and they
- 13:25occasionally get together
- 13:27to train with Tia.
- 13:30And I would argue that Jay
- 13:31was on the Ascension and
- 13:33signed to Proven right
- 13:35before the twenty twenty
- 13:37three CrossFit Games where
- 13:39he did really well.
- 13:40He wasn't even with he was
- 13:43signed between Torian Pro
- 13:44and the games in twenty twenty three.
- 13:47He had that top ten finish
- 13:49barely being with Proven
- 13:50for a for a month, I think, at the time.
- 13:57Yeah.
- 13:59Joey says, I hear you.
- 13:59Seems disingenuous on Ricky's part.
- 14:01And again, none of this is confirmed,
- 14:03so we don't know that he's
- 14:06actually doing this,
- 14:07but there is a lot of smoke
- 14:09around this story for sure.
- 14:12And Aaron comes back with,
- 14:13but I agree with you about loyalty.
- 14:15There's no loyalty in this sport.
- 14:18And maybe it's
- 14:22I mean,
- 14:22loyalty is less sports a long time ago.
- 14:24Nobody stays with the same
- 14:26team from the beginning of
- 14:27their career to the end in football,
- 14:29baseball, basketball, whatever.
- 14:30I mean,
- 14:31LeBron James has been switched
- 14:33teams four times and three
- 14:35different organizations.
- 14:37Uh,
- 14:37and he's one of the greatest players in
- 14:38the world.
- 14:39You never,
- 14:40you never saw that with Michael
- 14:41Jordan until the end.
- 14:43And that's just because he
- 14:44probably shouldn't have
- 14:45retired and not come back to play.
- 14:47Um,
- 14:50But it was just,
- 14:51it was weighing heavy on my mind because,
- 14:54and I will admit,
- 14:55I am good friends with Justin Kotler.
- 14:58I love that man.
- 14:59I think he is awesome.
- 15:01And so it's probably hitting
- 15:03me a little bit differently
- 15:04than it would if it was
- 15:07Kiefer or Max Elhaj or Matt
- 15:12Frazier or any of the other
- 15:14leaders of an organization.
- 15:18But I have a close
- 15:20relationship with Justin, and so for me,
- 15:24it just stings a little bit more is all.
- 15:27So with that,
- 15:31that's kind of my loyalty
- 15:32speech with that today.
- 15:35I also have been kind of on
- 15:36this little riff about
- 15:39I read this story about how
- 15:41well the the jake paul mike
- 15:43tyson fight did on netflix
- 15:46and that the nfl games on
- 15:48christmas day blew up um
- 15:51got five times the ratings
- 15:52of the nba uh on the same
- 15:54day and so the more I
- 15:57thought about it and um pat
- 16:00midgley helped me a lot with this
- 16:02is that you have these shows
- 16:05on Netflix like The Physical One Hundred.
- 16:10Now on Prime,
- 16:10you have the Mr. Beast games.
- 16:14You have all these like this
- 16:15event programming that the
- 16:18streaming services seem to
- 16:19get behind and market and
- 16:22make it a more popular
- 16:24sport or a more popular contest,
- 16:27whatever you want to call it.
- 16:32with that I think that that
- 16:35is an avenue that if you
- 16:38either the wfp or the
- 16:39crossfit game season should
- 16:42explore trying to get a
- 16:44deal with one of those
- 16:45streaming companies to go
- 16:48in and film a season where
- 16:50they can tell a story you
- 16:51also have like uh the golf
- 16:54show on netflix I think it's um
- 16:58Uh, I don't even,
- 17:00my brain is fried as I'm
- 17:02almost done with work for the week.
- 17:04Um, but, but it has the,
- 17:06like the golf show where
- 17:07you can follow the golfers
- 17:08through a season.
- 17:09It has the F one show where
- 17:11you can do the same thing.
- 17:13Full swing.
- 17:13Thank you.
- 17:14Understand.
- 17:15Uh, the F one has a show as well.
- 17:18Uh, more and more sports are doing this.
- 17:20You could say the WFP packages,
- 17:23a deal where you, um,
- 17:27where you film the season
- 17:30itself in addition to the
- 17:32athletes prepping.
- 17:33You have the twenty males
- 17:35and twenty females that you
- 17:36know are participating in every event,
- 17:38and then you have some
- 17:39challengers that you can
- 17:40kind of shoot in there as
- 17:42well that I think would
- 17:44make amazing storytelling
- 17:46and would be an awesome way
- 17:48to look at different ways
- 17:49of a revenue source in
- 17:51addition to better coverage
- 17:54and a different coverage.
- 17:57We've been talking on this
- 17:58show forever that the same
- 18:00broadcasting group gets the
- 18:02job for the CrossFit Games
- 18:03every year and all the big events,
- 18:06and nothing has changed
- 18:07with the coverage of the sports.
- 18:09You get the same angles.
- 18:11You get the same close-ups.
- 18:13You get all that stuff.
- 18:15Wouldn't it be cool to have
- 18:17someone like a Netflix
- 18:19production company to come in
- 18:22look at it and film it from
- 18:23a different perspective and
- 18:25a different angle and a different,
- 18:28just to see what's possible.
- 18:30Um,
- 18:36Jay Birch says,
- 18:36is there enough money in
- 18:37the ecosystem to do that?
- 18:38Well,
- 18:39WFP is touting fifteen million
- 18:40dollars and that they have
- 18:42other investors available.
- 18:44If you can sell it as a storyline,
- 18:47then maybe the production
- 18:48company helps with the cost
- 18:50of that so that they have a
- 18:52show to broadcast.
- 18:55Andrew Sten says,
- 18:55not sure the sport has the
- 18:56personalities for something like that,
- 18:58but something different needs to be done.
- 19:00I disagree.
- 19:00I think that.
- 19:03that they do have the
- 19:04personalities to do that.
- 19:05And we've seen it with some
- 19:07of the alternative
- 19:08coverages that have
- 19:09happened over the last two years.
- 19:12with Sivan doing the semifinals,
- 19:17with Taylor versus the world on that,
- 19:19with the kill Taylor.
- 19:21I think you have
- 19:22personalities throughout
- 19:23the sport that are willing to talk smack,
- 19:26that are willing to let you in,
- 19:28that are willing to do all these things.
- 19:31They just need to be given
- 19:32the opportunity to do so.
- 19:35All that media that used to
- 19:37do that has gone away.
- 19:40And except for...
- 19:43in fairness be friendly and
- 19:45savan who have gone out and
- 19:46done alternative coverages
- 19:50that's where things are if
- 19:51you got someone
- 19:52professional like a prime
- 19:54or a netflix or somebody
- 19:55like that to do something
- 19:56very similar I think it
- 19:58could be sold to them
- 19:59especially in the wfp
- 20:01format that makes um the
- 20:04season a very condensed and
- 20:08um easily understood season
- 20:13And I think that is key to that.
- 20:16Where CrossFit has a
- 20:17drawback is nobody knows
- 20:19what these in-person semifinals are.
- 20:22Are they regionally based?
- 20:24Are they not regionally based?
- 20:26We have that in addition to
- 20:27an online version of it.
- 20:30So...
- 20:31The CrossFit game season is
- 20:32a whole bunch of if-then-else statements.
- 20:35If you've ever worked in IT,
- 20:37that seems to be where we're going,
- 20:39where the WFP is go to this event,
- 20:43earn points, go to this event,
- 20:45earn points, top-thirty, go to this event,
- 20:47and earn double points to
- 20:49see what the leaderboard is
- 20:51at the end of the year.
- 20:57um anderson asks is the
- 20:59sport too small or niche
- 21:01for it to work f-one and
- 21:03pga are huge and have been
- 21:04around for a very long time
- 21:05there are shows like the
- 21:08physical one hundred that
- 21:11have been hugely successful
- 21:13on netflix um that are even
- 21:17more niche than what crossfit is
- 21:21And people tune into that all the time.
- 21:24I think if you tell the
- 21:25story correctly and you get
- 21:28interest in some of the characters,
- 21:31just like Savan,
- 21:33nobody knew who Taylor self
- 21:35was before all of this stuff.
- 21:37Savan took him, told his story,
- 21:40which is fascinating.
- 21:42And this,
- 21:43and he had an ability to be the
- 21:45underdog who could come up
- 21:47and beat people.
- 21:49Colton Mertens is the
- 21:50ultimate underdog where we
- 21:53now know his complete backstory.
- 21:56And when you tell that story,
- 21:59now you have someone to root for.
- 22:02And it's even cooler when
- 22:04you find those people in
- 22:05the challengers who are
- 22:07trying to get and gain the
- 22:08pro card and get into that
- 22:11top twenty so that they
- 22:13have a contract the next year.
- 22:15Everybody loves the underdog story.
- 22:17If you do good storytelling,
- 22:20it can be successful.
- 22:28And the other thing,
- 22:28all these shows that Netflix puts on,
- 22:30they put their own
- 22:31marketing arm behind it and push it.
- 22:36And right now,
- 22:37the way it's done is we
- 22:38lazily just throw it up on
- 22:40YouTube and hope people come to watch it.
- 22:46This way,
- 22:46you throw it up on Netflix or
- 22:48Prime and let them do the
- 22:50hard work of marketing it
- 22:52and getting people to come watch it.
- 22:56Pat Midgley says, Andrew, maybe,
- 22:57but a show like this,
- 22:58if a big streaming service
- 22:59bought it and produced it,
- 23:00would take it to a new level.
- 23:01And I agree.
- 23:05Now, again,
- 23:07I think the WFP and the way
- 23:09it's organized makes more
- 23:10sense at this point to do this.
- 23:13But if you can do it as a proof of concept,
- 23:16I think it's definitely doable.
- 23:22Chris Beesterfield says,
- 23:24ten years too late.
- 23:25It probably is,
- 23:27but better late than never.
- 23:35If they would have done
- 23:36something like this in two
- 23:38thousand seventeen or two
- 23:39thousand eighteen,
- 23:41I think that the streaming
- 23:42services would jump at the chance.
- 23:44But in all seriousness,
- 23:47the streaming services
- 23:48didn't know the effect of
- 23:50event programming until the
- 23:52last couple years.
- 23:55They're the ones that I'm
- 23:56reading the articles on.
- 23:57They're looking for event
- 23:58programming because they're
- 24:00finding that it is cheaper
- 24:01to produce than original
- 24:04movies and TV shows,
- 24:06and it's pulling in massive ratings.
- 24:11Best bang for the buck.
- 24:13So that's where I'm getting
- 24:14this idea is I've been
- 24:15reading some of the
- 24:17business sections of
- 24:19different newspapers and
- 24:21online places over the last few days,
- 24:23talking about how the big
- 24:25streaming companies are
- 24:26looking for event programming.
- 24:28It's just cheaper to produce,
- 24:30and it's more bang for the
- 24:31buck on a ratings scale.
- 24:37that's where I've kind of
- 24:38dove down this rabbit hole
- 24:40over and it really happened
- 24:41uh this all came out after
- 24:43the nfl was on netflix on
- 24:45christmas day and then
- 24:46everybody's talking about
- 24:47with the boom of event
- 24:50programming that's what the
- 24:51streaming services are
- 24:52going to be looking for uh
- 24:57so yeah so philip I would
- 25:01say you could rewind and
- 25:02check it out or that we're
- 25:04talking about instead of
- 25:08instead of crossfit or the
- 25:10wfp going after espn or cbs
- 25:12as a broadcasting partner
- 25:14go after a streaming
- 25:16service that's going to do
- 25:17more to market your brand
- 25:19than cbs or espn we talked
- 25:22last night I think it was
- 25:24or yesterday afternoon that
- 25:27um cbs aired rogue over the
- 25:29weekend and none of us even
- 25:31knew it we just some of us
- 25:33accidentally came across it
- 25:34so cbs did not even
- 25:36promote it didn't um
- 25:39announce that it was going
- 25:39to be on um and so I think
- 25:42it would be better to
- 25:43partner with a streaming
- 25:44service who are going to
- 25:47market their shows
- 25:48especially their original
- 25:49shows uh on on the services
- 25:52that's all it's just been a
- 25:54rabbit hole I've died down
- 25:55dove down and have just
- 25:58been excited to talk about
- 25:59so there's that
- 26:05I want to finish up with a couple things,
- 26:06and then we'll be back
- 26:08tomorrow for kind of a
- 26:10year-end podcast show.
- 26:13And so what I'm going to
- 26:14finish with is Dave's Week
- 26:16in Review came out last
- 26:17night while we were on the air.
- 26:23Good point, Corey.
- 26:24Neither did Rogue, for that matter.
- 26:25I caught it at the bowling alley,
- 26:27for Christ's sake.
- 26:28Yep.
- 26:33Yep.
- 26:35So Dave's Weekend Review
- 26:36came out last night.
- 26:37It appears that he is really
- 26:39just dipping his toe in the
- 26:41water getting back into
- 26:43these weekend reviews.
- 26:44The first one was only three minutes long.
- 26:47The second one is...
- 26:51The second one is about four minutes long.
- 26:53Last night,
- 26:54I had a really hard time hearing him.
- 26:56He wasn't using a mic.
- 26:57He was outside.
- 26:59But he really just talked
- 27:00about going to Greg
- 27:02Glassman's to hear a new
- 27:04presentation he's giving as
- 27:05part of the Broken Science Initiative.
- 27:08But he hasn't really got
- 27:09into any kind of game stuff,
- 27:12any kind of competitive
- 27:13CrossFit stuff in his first two weeks.
- 27:16And I know he said he's just
- 27:17trying to get the muscle memory back.
- 27:19So hopefully over the next few weeks,
- 27:21we'll start learning a
- 27:22little bit more about those things,
- 27:24which he did kind of
- 27:25address at the end of this,
- 27:26that that stuff would be coming.
- 27:30But he's doing a lot of
- 27:31traveling in addition to that this week.
- 27:33So, yeah.
- 27:34uh so hopefully get another
- 27:36one next week and we start
- 27:37getting a little bit more
- 27:38news out of those weekend
- 27:40reviews so tomorrow's show
- 27:44I'm gonna do like some
- 27:45year-end podcast stuff like
- 27:47my favorite shows I'm gonna
- 27:48count down my top ten shows
- 27:50of the year um things like
- 27:54that but what I'm gonna do
- 27:55today is I'm just gonna
- 27:57share a couple of my
- 27:58favorite moments for the year um
- 28:05So I live in the land of blimps.
- 28:07Akron,
- 28:07Ohio is just about an hour and a
- 28:08half away.
- 28:10And that is where the
- 28:10Goodyear blimps are housed.
- 28:15And what's creating my house
- 28:16is right in the flight path
- 28:18to Ohio State.
- 28:20So every time there's a big
- 28:21game at Ohio State,
- 28:22the blimp flies right over
- 28:23top of my house.
- 28:24And that'd be cool.
- 28:26Big Clydesdale Media logo on
- 28:27the side of the blimp.
- 28:28That'd be fun.
- 28:30If we're dreaming.
- 28:32Oh, you want it to be CrossFit,
- 28:34CrossFit blimp.
- 28:35Oh, I want it to be a Clydesdale blimp.
- 28:41Yeah, Kenneth, I'm in the blimp belt.
- 28:43That's where I am.
- 28:48Um, so these are a couple,
- 28:50these are two shows or two
- 28:51things that happened this
- 28:52year that I was really,
- 28:54one is just my favorite
- 28:55show that I did this year
- 28:57and it's not like full on CrossFit.
- 28:59So I wanted to share it today.
- 29:00I won't put it in my top ten.
- 29:03Um,
- 29:04but one of the shows that was my
- 29:05favorite this year was I had, um,
- 29:09come across a story about a woman who.
- 29:13was a a really good swimmer
- 29:16had made it to uh the
- 29:18olympic trials I think she
- 29:21retired from swimming she
- 29:23started doing crossfit she
- 29:25added one day of uh
- 29:28swimming back into her
- 29:30routine did a couple meets
- 29:32and accidentally qualified
- 29:33for the olympic trials but
- 29:36by primarily doing crossfit
- 29:38And so I reached out to her.
- 29:40I got to know her.
- 29:42And that is my episode with
- 29:44Caitlin Johnson.
- 29:46And I'm going to share a
- 29:47screenshot of that right now.
- 29:50So this was our episode with
- 29:53Caitlin Johnson.
- 29:54This was done back before semifinals,
- 29:58I believe.
- 30:00But this is her picture of
- 30:02her at the Olympic trials.
- 30:03And I'll just play.
- 30:04The funny thing about this
- 30:06story is that I reached out
- 30:08to her not really knowing a
- 30:09lot about her history.
- 30:10And then when I reach out to
- 30:11an athlete or a guest,
- 30:13then I do a deep dive
- 30:15research thing into them so
- 30:17that I am prepared when they come on.
- 30:20Come to find out,
- 30:20she grew up in Western
- 30:21Pennsylvania just like I did.
- 30:23She went to the college where I,
- 30:27when I was a swimmer in high school,
- 30:30had private lessons.
- 30:31And we had some of the same coaches.
- 30:34So we got to share a lot of
- 30:36experiences in this
- 30:37interview about the people
- 30:39that taught us how to swim.
- 30:42And I'm just going to play a
- 30:43little snippet for you.
- 30:44Not too much, but...
- 30:46CrossFit and yet so swimming
- 30:48because you've got the big,
- 30:50the big swimming thing behind you,
- 30:51but you're doing the
- 30:52CrossFit handstand picture
- 30:55outside of Lucasville stadium.
- 30:56Yeah.
- 30:57My friends were real troopers.
- 30:59I was like, guys,
- 30:59I need to take this picture.
- 31:00Like where was the perfect picture here?
- 31:03So I like three friends,
- 31:05like take all kinds of
- 31:06pictures trying to get the
- 31:07best one for me.
- 31:08So got all the angles.
- 31:10Yeah.
- 31:12Um, so yeah, that, that's really cool.
- 31:14And then,
- 31:17Let's get into your swimming
- 31:18career so people know how good you were.
- 31:23So that's just a little snippet from it.
- 31:26We go on to talk that she
- 31:27grew up in Western Pennsylvania,
- 31:28that we had the same coaches.
- 31:31And it was really a fun
- 31:33interview and kind of fun
- 31:35for me to go back and kind
- 31:36of relive some of my
- 31:38swimming days with her and
- 31:41sharing the same coaches.
- 31:43And it just was fun.
- 31:45And she went to...
- 31:47we both ended up going to
- 31:49the same college at some point.
- 31:50I'm much older than she is.
- 31:52So I was there way earlier.
- 31:54Uh,
- 31:54but we talked about like restaurants
- 31:55and stuff that,
- 31:56and things that we would do in that town.
- 31:58Uh, and it's a little division two school.
- 32:01And the funny thing was that
- 32:03my dream was to swim for that school.
- 32:05They, they had won like.
- 32:07Ten straight national
- 32:08championships as a division two school.
- 32:11And I wanted to swim for
- 32:12them and I could not, I could not, um,
- 32:18I was not good enough to make their team.
- 32:20I ended up swimming.
- 32:22I was recruited by some
- 32:22division one schools and I
- 32:24ended up walking on at Ohio
- 32:25state and I swam for Ohio
- 32:27state for a brief amount of time,
- 32:30but I could,
- 32:30I was not good enough to swim
- 32:31for this division two school.
- 32:33She was there.
- 32:34She won like she was as many
- 32:39championships as you could win.
- 32:41She did.
- 32:43She was that good at that
- 32:44division two level.
- 32:46Um,
- 32:47And she ended up winning...
- 32:50She's in the Hall of Fame
- 32:51at the school now.
- 32:52She's... A lot of cool things.
- 32:56A lot of cool things with her.
- 32:59But she also competes in CrossFit now.
- 33:01And so she's competed at Wadapalooza.
- 33:04She's competed at different big events.
- 33:06TFX.
- 33:07Things like that.
- 33:08But she's actually... She
- 33:09moved since this interview to Austin,
- 33:12Texas.
- 33:13And is training down there now.
- 33:15But yeah...
- 33:16Super fun interview.
- 33:18Kenneth says it's episode
- 33:19eight ninety four.
- 33:20I think I'm going to take
- 33:21his word on that.
- 33:23Because I do not know for sure.
- 33:26Let me go to the beginning here and see.
- 33:40Dang, I don't know.
- 33:50It is eight ninety four.
- 33:51Good call.
- 33:51Kenneth, you are the man.
- 33:53You're the man.
- 33:55Judy Reed.
- 33:57I can't do it.
- 33:58I went to Ohio State for a
- 34:00brief amount of time.
- 34:02My experience there was not awesome.
- 34:04And it's a Penn State day for me.
- 34:06It's Penn State.
- 34:08Can't do it.
- 34:11I know that you are loyal to
- 34:13your Buckeyes.
- 34:13Your son is there.
- 34:15They play tomorrow against
- 34:16the number one team in the country.
- 34:18That's going to be an awesome game.
- 34:19Can't wait to see that as well.
- 34:22But, yeah.
- 34:23So,
- 34:23Kaitlin Johnson was my favorite
- 34:24interview of the year,
- 34:26really just for personal reasons,
- 34:27not for CrossFit reasons.
- 34:28But I wanted to just share that.
- 34:30And then my favorite thing
- 34:33of the year was –
- 34:40the eleven part documentary
- 34:42I did at the CrossFit
- 34:44Masters CrossFit Games.
- 34:47This was a labor of love.
- 34:48This took eleven weeks to
- 34:53get through to build and huge thanks to
- 35:00Jonathan Ortega for editing
- 35:02all of the workout videos
- 35:04in the middle of these.
- 35:06Thank you to Ellie Hiller
- 35:08for getting the interviews with me.
- 35:10But then it was editing it all together.
- 35:13And I just,
- 35:14even reliving it through the
- 35:15editing process was awesome.
- 35:18This is the favorite thing
- 35:19that I've ever done from a
- 35:22work perspective in my life.
- 35:28Holly was awesome with the
- 35:30graphics and she is not biased at all.
- 35:32She said it turned out so well.
- 35:34It is literally the most
- 35:36favorite thing I've ever
- 35:37done with this channel in
- 35:40addition to my whole working life.
- 35:42I've never been prouder of
- 35:45anything that I've done.
- 35:46And this was just a blast.
- 35:49And I hope I get to do
- 35:50something similar to that
- 35:51this year once we know more
- 35:53about the structure of the season.
- 35:55But dang.
- 35:58And then Caitlin Walters as well.
- 36:01She was also a videographer for me.
- 36:03So I don't want to leave her out either.
- 36:04So Caitlin Walters, Jonathan Ortega,
- 36:06Holly Dugan, Ellie Hiller,
- 36:09that team put this together.
- 36:11And I am so proud of each
- 36:12and every one of you
- 36:13because this is by far my
- 36:15favorite thing that I have ever done.
- 36:18Kenneth is asking who's number one.
- 36:20We have to tune in tomorrow.
- 36:22Oh, number one in the country.
- 36:24That's Oregon.
- 36:24Oregon.
- 36:25Oregon.
- 36:27I thought you meant number
- 36:28one show that I'm going to
- 36:29be revealing tomorrow.
- 36:30And I wasn't giving you a sneak peek.
- 36:35So those are two of my
- 36:36favorite things from the year.
- 36:37And that's just a preview of
- 36:38kind of what we'll talk about tomorrow.
- 36:41Um, uh, rogue is going back to Aberdeen,
- 36:48Scotland, October, the first to November.
- 36:49Second, just announced, uh,
- 36:53barbell spin did the
- 36:54background check on the
- 36:56hotels in Aberdeen, uh,
- 36:59and kind of leaked this early.
- 37:01So apparently rogue has
- 37:02announced it officially now.
- 37:07Uh, clock.
- 37:08How is it possible?
- 37:09Oregon's first game is against OSU.
- 37:10Certainly one of the top
- 37:11three teams in the bracket,
- 37:13but Penn state gets to
- 37:14skate into the semis
- 37:15playing SMU and Boise state.
- 37:17Uh,
- 37:20I think that the first year
- 37:22of the college football
- 37:23playoff is flawed in.
- 37:24Oh, so many ways.
- 37:27Um,
- 37:27I think that the conference champions
- 37:31getting automatic by our
- 37:33will be done after this season,
- 37:34because now you see that
- 37:36the seating is not right.
- 37:38Um, they should get,
- 37:39if you win the conference,
- 37:40you should get in,
- 37:42but not necessarily a buy
- 37:44and into the second round.
- 37:46Um,
- 37:47And I think that's why we
- 37:48had blowouts in the first round,
- 37:50because you had teams like
- 37:52Penn State and Texas that
- 37:54may have been in the top
- 37:54four and really should have gotten a buy.
- 37:57And then let the other teams
- 38:00kind of scrap it out to get
- 38:01to the Elite Eight and then
- 38:03take on the teams that
- 38:06should be ranked in the top four.
- 38:10Yeah.
- 38:11But I will say as a Penn State fan,
- 38:13I'm not mad today that we
- 38:17get to take on Boise State
- 38:18instead of Oregon.
- 38:20I will say that.
- 38:25And I'm not mad that Ohio
- 38:26State and Oregon have to
- 38:27play and one of them will
- 38:28be knocked out before the
- 38:30national championship game.
- 38:32Not mad about that.
- 38:36So just saying.
- 38:39So with that, check in tomorrow.
- 38:41I'll be counting down my top
- 38:44ten shows of the year and
- 38:47revealing those to you guys.
- 38:48And if anything pops up news-wise,
- 38:50of course, we'll talk about that as well.
- 38:53But what I want to tell you
- 38:54guys is I appreciate your

- 39:13These lunch hour shows have
- 39:14been awesome to just kind of sit back,
- 39:17chat, no real format, no real prep,
- 39:20just kind of talking into a
- 39:21microphone and answering
- 39:23your questions or showing
- 39:24your statements and responding to that.
- 39:27It's been a blast.
