- 0:12Hello, friends, it's Sean. Here it is a Tuesday.
- 0:17It is Holy Tuesday. It is, well, Pearl Tuesday of
- 0:22Holy Week. It doesn't get called anything
- 0:23special. Wednesday sometimes gets called.
- 0:26Could Wednesday like Good Friday?
- 0:29And you might think, why is Good Friday called good?
- 0:32Well, something, it's because it used to be God's Friday and it
- 0:35became Good Friday. Others think it was, you know,
- 0:37the Holy day and and the things of the Lord are good.
- 0:41So therefore it is Good Friday. Other people, I'm gonna let me
- 0:44find the phrase. It was quite something.
- 0:46Here it is. In the Greek liturgy it was
- 0:49known as the Holy and Great Friday which became Good Friday.
- 0:54It's a little more understated. So.
- 0:56But today is not good. Today's today is Holy Tuesday.
- 0:59It is the 26th of March. Hello friend.
- 1:02I hope you're doing well. I hope this holiest of weeks is
- 1:06treating you well as together. We walk toward that hill on
- 1:10Calvary together. We approach that day when the
- 1:14God of the universe humbles himself as assistant Philippians
- 1:18to death, even death on a cross. Why?
- 1:21Because he loves us and he wants to reunite.
- 1:25Asked to him and his father. Wow.
- 1:28So amazing. And so this week we continue to
- 1:32walk with Jesus toward that moment, and today is no
- 1:36exception. Today we will continue that
- 1:38journey. So let's do it, shall we?
- 1:41Let us read together. Mark Chapter 12.
- 1:54Then Jesus began teaching them with stories.
- 1:58A man planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it, dug a
- 2:02pit for pressing out the grape juice, and built her outlook
- 2:06tower. Then he leased the vineyard to
- 2:09tenant farmers and moved to another country.
- 2:12At the time of the grape harvest, he sent one of his
- 2:15servants to collect his share of the crop, but the farmers
- 2:18grabbed the servant, beat him up and sent him back empty handed.
- 2:23The owner then sent another servant, but they insulted him
- 2:27and beat him over the head. The next servant he sent was
- 2:31killed. Others he sent were either
- 2:33beaten or killed until there was only one left, His son, whom he
- 2:37loved dearly. The owner finally sent him
- 2:41thinking. Surely they will respect my son,
- 2:44But the tenant farmer said to one another, here comes the heir
- 2:48to this estate. Let's kill him and get the
- 2:51estate for ourselves. So they grabbed him and murdered
- 2:55him and threw his body out of the vineyard.
- 2:58What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do?
- 3:01Jesus asked. I'll tell you, he will come and
- 3:04kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others.
- 3:08Didn't you ever read this in the scriptures?
- 3:11The stone that the builders rejected has now become the
- 3:15cornerstone. This is the Lord's doing and it
- 3:19is wonderful to see. The religious leaders wanted to
- 3:23arrest Jesus because they realised he was telling the
- 3:26story against them. They were the wicked farmers,
- 3:30but they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went
- 3:34away. Later, the leaders sent some
- 3:38Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap Jesus into saying
- 3:42something for which he could be arrested.
- 3:44Teacher, they said we know how honest you are, You are
- 3:49impartial and don't play favourites.
- 3:52You teach the Way of God, truthfully.
- 3:55Now tell us is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
- 3:59Should we pay them or shouldn't we?
- 4:03Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said, why are you
- 4:07trying to trap me? Show me a Roman coin and I'll
- 4:10tell you when they handed it to him?
- 4:13He asked whose picture and title are stamped on it.
- 4:17Caesars, they replied. Well then Jesus said, Give to
- 4:23Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to
- 4:28God. His reply completely amazed
- 4:32them. Then Jesus was approached by
- 4:35some Sadducees religious leaders who say there is no resurrection
- 4:39from the dead. They posed this question,
- 4:42teacher. Moses gave us a law that if a
- 4:46man dies leaving a wife without children, his brothers should
- 4:50marry the widow and have a child Who will carry on the brother's
- 4:54name? Well, suppose there were seven
- 4:57brothers. The oldest one married and then
- 5:00died without children. So the second brother married
- 5:03the widow, but he also died without children.
- 5:06Then the third brother married her.
- 5:08This continued with all seven of them, and still there were no
- 5:13children. Last of all the woman also died.
- 5:17So tell us whose wife will she be in the resurrection?
- 5:21For all seven were married to her, Jesus replied.
- 5:27Your mistake is that you don't know the scriptures and you
- 5:30don't know the power of God. For when the dead rise, they
- 5:35will neither marry nor be given in marriage.
- 5:38In this respect they will be like the angels in heaven.
- 5:42But now as to whether the dead will be raised, haven't you ever
- 5:46read about this in the writings of Moses?
- 5:49In the story of the burning Bush, long after Abraham, Isaac,
- 5:53and Jacob had died, God said to Moses, I am the God of Abraham,
- 5:59the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
- 6:03So he is the God of the living, not the dead.
- 6:07You have made a serious error. One of the teachers of religious
- 6:12law was standing there listening to the debate.
- 6:15He realised that Jesus had answered well.
- 6:17So he asked of all the commandments, which is the most
- 6:21important, Jesus replied, the most important commandment is
- 6:27this. Listen though Israel, the Lord
- 6:30our God is the one and only Lord, and you must love the Lord
- 6:34your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind,
- 6:39and all your strength. The second is equally important.
- 6:44Love your neighbour as yourself. No other commander is greater
- 6:49than these, the teacher of religious law replied.
- 6:53Well said, teacher. You have spoken the truth by
- 6:57saying that there is only one God and no other.
- 7:00And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and
- 7:04all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my
- 7:07neighbour as myself. This is more important than to
- 7:11offer all the burnt offering and sacrifices required in the law.
- 7:16Realising how much the man understood, Jesus said to him
- 7:21you are not far from the Kingdom of God, and after that no one
- 7:26dared to ask him anymore questions.
- 7:31Later, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple, he asked
- 7:35why did the teachers of religious law claim that the
- 7:38Messiah is the son of David? For David himself, speaking
- 7:42under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said the Lord said
- 7:47to my Lord, Sit in the place of honour at my right hand until I
- 7:51humble your enemies beneath your feet.
- 7:55Since David himself called the Messiah, my Lord, how can the
- 8:00Messiah be his son? The large crowd listened to him
- 8:04with great delight. Jesus also taught beware of
- 8:09these teachers of religious law, for they like to parade around
- 8:14in flowing robes and receive respectful greetings as they
- 8:17walk in the marketplaces, and how they love the seats of
- 8:22honour in the synagogues and the head table at banquets.
- 8:25Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their poverty and
- 8:30then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public.
- 8:35Because of this, they will be more severely punished.
- 8:41Jesus sat down near the collection box in the temple and
- 8:45watched as the crowds dropped in their money.
- 8:48Many rich people put in large amounts.
- 8:51Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.
- 8:56Jesus called his disciples to him and said, I tell you the
- 9:00truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are
- 9:05making contributions, for they have given a tiny part of their
- 9:08surplus. But she, poorer she is, has
- 9:12given everything she had to live on.
- 9:24Lord, you just do see to their heart, don't you?
- 9:28When the world sees the showy, flashy things that are done, you
- 9:32see the intention. You see the cost of
- 9:34discipleship. Thank you, Lord, for the way
- 9:39that you see to the truth of the matter, and you will only ask us
- 9:44to do and to give what we are able to.
- 9:48And, Lord, I just pray that as you ask, you would empower us to
- 9:53walk in your footsteps, that you would give us what we need, the
- 9:57courage, we need the boldness. We need the peace.
- 10:01We need the faith. We need to truly follow you,
- 10:07Holy Spirit. Grow in each of us.
- 10:10Shape us to be instruments of service for your Kingdom, Jesus,
- 10:17We love you, and we are so grateful for all that you have
- 10:20done for us, particularly this week as we walk toward the cross
- 10:25and we see that incredible act of love and sacrifice that you
- 10:29do for each one of us so willingly.
- 10:34It's hard to wrap our heads around, but we're so grateful.
- 10:41We love you. We praise you, and it's in the
- 10:45sacrificial and holy name of Jesus that we pray.
- 10:50Ah man.
