- 0:00Welcome back to the podcast, Brothers.
- 0:02I'm your host, Pastor Justin Dean, and this channel is all
- 0:05about making strong, virtuous Christian men in a weak and
- 0:08degenerate culture. Today we're going to look at
- 0:11something that makes us weak, bitterness.
- 0:17There's a proverb that says the heart knows its own bitterness
- 0:23and no stranger shares its joy. It's Proverbs 1410.
- 0:28What this proverb means is that bitterness is something that
- 0:32infects our hearts. The heart in the Scriptures
- 0:37isn't talking about just the organ that is pumping our blood
- 0:40through our body. It's talking about the Control
- 0:42Center of our whole self, of our soul, our feelings, our desires,
- 0:49our thoughts, our wills, place that we choose between good and
- 0:54evil, right and wrong, what we're going to do each day.
- 0:57And this part is interesting. If you've got a bitter heart,
- 1:03you've got a hard and brittle heart, and it's going to affect
- 1:08everything else in your life. Bitter men take themselves far
- 1:13too seriously. They can't laugh at themselves
- 1:16when they do something embarrassing.
- 1:18They can't absorb the emotional anxiety that comes from their
- 1:24wife and their kids, so they shut down or lash out.
- 1:31They struggled to deal with setbacks in life or business
- 1:34because they think that God has dealt with them unfairly.
- 1:38See, bitterness is a joy killer. And remember the scripture that
- 1:44says the joy of the Lord is our strength.
- 1:49See, bitterness has to be dealt with if we want to be strong and
- 1:54joyful men. And as men, we're often told to,
- 1:58you know, man up, suck it up, push through the pain, don't
- 2:02complain, and that's all good. But there is a pain that doesn't
- 2:07just need to be pushed through. It doesn't just need to be, you
- 2:11know, you don't just need to suck it up.
- 2:13It must be confessed and uprooted in our lives.
- 2:18And that's bitterness. We have to repent of it and put
- 2:22our faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 2:26Trying to push through the inner pain of bitterness and unchecked
- 2:33resentment doesn't make us tougher.
- 2:37It makes us brittle. Like dry wood that all the
- 2:42moisture sucked out of it. And you put any weight on that
- 2:45dry wood and it snaps instead of bending.
- 2:49A bitter heart cracks when life tests it.
- 2:54Bitter men are brittle men. Now the idea of this podcast
- 2:59came to me this week as my friend Pastor Josh Gallier
- 3:02preached for me on Sunday. We're studying Hebrews chapter
- 3:0512, and that's all about being men who run the race that God
- 3:10has set before us, that we run that race and we endure all of
- 3:15the difficulties of our lives by faith.
- 3:18And we're commanded to lift up our drooping hands and
- 3:20strengthen our weak knees because God is training us and
- 3:24disciplining us or discipling us as his beloved sons.
- 3:29God, as our Father, wants us to finish our race as well.
- 3:34He wants us to cross the finish line and reach the glories of
- 3:38heaven's shore. But he also wants us to become a
- 3:41certain type of person while we're here in this life.
- 3:43He wants to be us, to become strong and virtuous men who make
- 3:47this world as much like heaven as humanly possible.
- 3:52Well, one of the things that will take us out of our race and
- 3:56cause us to not run it well, or not finish it well, or finish it
- 4:01at all, is bitterness. God says to us in Hebrews 12/15
- 4:06See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God, that no
- 4:10root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and by it
- 4:15many become defiled. The Scriptures here warn us.
- 4:19Clearly, bitterness isn't just an emotion.
- 4:24It's a destructive root that chokes out and poisons
- 4:29everything it touches. Today we'll unpack why bitter
- 4:33men are brittle men and what we'll see, what God's Word says
- 4:37about it, and most importantly, how the gospel frees us to be
- 4:41resilient, forgiving, and strong and faithful men in the Lord.
- 4:47So first thing let's look at let's look at the danger of
- 4:50bitterness. The danger of bitterness is it
- 4:53weakens us from the inside. See, bitterness often starts
- 4:58small. A slight somebody you know gives
- 5:02you a slight, somebody hurts you somebody.
- 5:04Maybe there's an injustice that happens in your life, a betrayal
- 5:07of a friend or maybe from your wife or your boss, or some
- 5:11circumstance that you could even possibly blame on God.
- 5:14Something doesn't go where your way.
- 5:16Maybe it's a genuine injustice. And as men, if we're just trying
- 5:21to suck it up, we might just put our head down, keep working, try
- 5:25to ignore it, bury it under work, bury it under a little bit
- 5:30of anger or, you know, just throw ourself into some
- 5:34distraction. Video games, watching movies,
- 5:37sports, athletics, whatever it is.
- 5:38And and we just think, oh, you know what?
- 5:40It's gone. I just ignored it.
- 5:41It's gone. But scripture calls it a root.
- 5:47And I think that's significant. A root.
- 5:51A root doesn't stay hidden for long if it's not rooted out and
- 5:57dealt with. A root stays there and there in
- 6:00the darkness of your heart. It begins to grow, and
- 6:05eventually that root will break the surface of our heart and
- 6:09cause us trouble. And the scripture says and
- 6:12defile others, so it's going to cause trouble to others as well.
- 6:15What does that mean? It means if you're dealing with
- 6:17a bitter heart or bitterness in your heart, your wife is
- 6:21eventually going to feel it. Your kids are going to
- 6:25experience that hardness of heart, your brothers in Christ,
- 6:31your business partners, whoever it is, they're going to start
- 6:33feeling one way. I always describe this hard
- 6:36heart as it's like throwing ping pong balls off a statue, right?
- 6:42Your brother tries to encourage you.
- 6:43Your brother tries to say something to you.
- 6:44Maybe he's bringing correction to you.
- 6:45Whatever it is, your boss is trying to correct you.
- 6:48And that correction hits you like a ping pong ball off a
- 6:50statue. You don't want to hear it.
- 6:53You've got a hard heart now, a bitter man.
- 6:59He might look strong on the outside.
- 7:03Outside, right? He looks stoic.
- 7:04He looks unyielding. He looks unflinching.
- 7:07Nothing can faze him, but actually on the inside he's
- 7:12brittle. He's brittle, and that usually
- 7:16shows itself. And the fact that he'll snap at
- 7:19the smallest provocation because that root has sapped, it's dried
- 7:26out his spiritual vitality, right?
- 7:30Ephesians 431 commands us directly.
- 7:32Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be
- 7:38put away from you along with all malice notice.
- 7:41And I think there's a progression there.
- 7:43Let all bitterness, I think it starts with a bitter heart and
- 7:46then that can lead to wrath, that can lead to anger, that can
- 7:48lead to clamor and slander and then malice.
- 7:53And Paul doesn't say, well, just ignore it, Just suck it up.
- 7:56Just manage it or, you know, vent it.
- 7:59He says put it away. I would say in our context here,
- 8:03as we're comparing it to a root, pull it out, right?
- 8:08Uproot it. That's what you do with the
- 8:10garden, right? You, you, you plant a garden and
- 8:13you've got to go literally every single day and you've got to
- 8:16pull those weeds out every single day, right?
- 8:19Why? Because if you don't, those
- 8:21weeds will take over the garden and they'll suck all the
- 8:23nutrients out of the soil and those plants won't grow like
- 8:26they're supposed to grow. And Paul tells us specifically
- 8:31where to do this because bitterness, that bitter root,
- 8:36doesn't produce the righteousness of God.
- 8:40James 120 says the anger of man does not produce the
- 8:44righteousness of God, right? Bitterness tends to masquerade
- 8:49as justified anger, right? Oh yeah, I know who.
- 8:53I know how that guy is. Oh, that guy screwed me over
- 8:55before. So our heart becomes hard to
- 8:58him. We we walk in unforgiveness or
- 9:01my wife always says that, or she always does that, or she never
- 9:04says that and never does that. And our unmet expectations begin
- 9:08to harden our heart, right? It hardens us here, literally
- 9:13from the inside out. Theologian John Piper and his
- 9:16message Battling the Unbelief of bitterness puts it this way.
- 9:19The battle against bitterness is a battle against unbelief in the
- 9:24promises of God. See, when we hold on to
- 9:28resentment, we're essentially saying, God, you didn't handle
- 9:32this right. You haven't given me everything
- 9:35I need for life, for life and godliness.
- 9:38I can't trust you with this and I can't trust your ways.
- 9:41And I know you tell me to forgive, but I'm, I don't think
- 9:43you know what you're doing. And so I'm not going to forgive.
- 9:46I'm going to hold on to this bitterness.
- 9:48I need to carry this grudge. That's how I'm going to take my
- 9:51take care of myself. Well, actually, that's just a
- 9:54lack of faith. That's unbelief and it makes us
- 9:59fragile. My next point here is why men
- 10:04are especially vulnerable, right?
- 10:06And, and kind of why it makes us as men brittle.
- 10:12See, we're, we know this. We're called to lead, protect
- 10:16and provide, right? We need to lead ourself.
- 10:18We need to lead our families, our loved ones.
- 10:20We need to lead in the, in the church.
- 10:22And then hopefully, God willing, we can lead in wider society.
- 10:26We need to protect. We need to provide.
- 10:28Well, the problem is when we feel like either we failed or
- 10:34that somebody failed us, right? Why kids boss, go down the list.
- 10:39Well, what happens there is bitterness can creep in and kind
- 10:44of whisper this false promise that it will be our protector,
- 10:51right? Bitterness will keep us from
- 10:53being hurt in the future. We say to ourselves, I'm never
- 10:57going to let this happen again. I'll never let that person hurt
- 11:00me again. I'll never let my wife get to me
- 11:02like that again, Right? That's the kind of stuff we say,
- 11:05but the reality is that's a false promise and it always
- 11:08backfires. In Colossians 319, in the King
- 11:12James Version says this, it says husbands, husbands are
- 11:15specifically warned about this bitterness.
- 11:17It says, husbands love your wives and do not be bitter
- 11:23towards them. The ESV says do not be harsh
- 11:26towards them. But again, it's this bitterness
- 11:29that leads to harshness that leads to anger and outbursts of
- 11:34anger. And so the King James Version
- 11:36tells us specifically to love our wives and to not be bitter
- 11:42towards them. Now why would he single out
- 11:44husbands, tells wives he singles out wives and tells them wives
- 11:49respect your husbands and he singles out husbands and says
- 11:52love your wives and do not be bitter towards them.
- 11:54Why? Well, I think it's because
- 11:56bitterness towards our wives is more prone to us as men, right?
- 12:02And it being disrespectful is more prone to our wives as
- 12:07women, right? And the reality is bitterness
- 12:12towards our wives turns our love cold.
- 12:16It turns the temperature down on our love.
- 12:20It makes us brittle in the one relationship where we are called
- 12:26to reflect Christ's unbreakable love for the church.
- 12:29I often say that Jesus Christ has a one way love for His
- 12:33bride. He loves us in One Direction and
- 12:37He loves us so much even though we're undeserving of it, that he
- 12:41he chooses to call us his beloved.
- 12:43And he loves us and he changes us with His love, right?
- 12:47He doesn't love us because we love him.
- 12:49He loves us first and then we love him because how he loves
- 12:52us. And that's supposed to be a
- 12:55picture of how we love our wives.
- 12:57We love our wives with a one way love.
- 13:00We we're going to love them no matter what.
- 13:01What that doesn't just mean feel loving towards them means we're
- 13:04going to act loving towards them.
- 13:07And then they're going to reciprocate that as their love.
- 13:09They're going to reciprocate that back to us, right?
- 13:12Well, bitterness burns the temperature down.
- 13:18Like if love is hot, bitterness is cold, right?
- 13:23Bitterness and love are actually opposites.
- 13:27A bitter husband isn't going to be tender towards his wife, he's
- 13:32going to be cold. He's going to be brittle, quick
- 13:37to anger, slow to forgive, and ultimately weak and leading his
- 13:42family spirit at home spiritually.
- 13:45Now think about it like this, you know, a resilient man, a man
- 13:52with the life giving spirit of God inside of him.
- 13:56He's going to bend with grace. He forgives as Christ forgave
- 14:04him. You know, I know down South
- 14:07there's been this cold snap and one of the things happens in
- 14:10these, these cold snaps is these trees.
- 14:13They, you know, they get loaded down with ice and they get
- 14:16really heavy. And then all of the,
- 14:18specifically the dead branches, they just snap and fall off and
- 14:22'cause, you know, knock down power lines and do all this kind
- 14:25of stuff. Why?
- 14:25Because they can't, they're, they, they can't support that
- 14:28weight and they're, they, they can't bend, right?
- 14:31They can't bend. While a resilient man can bend,
- 14:35he can move in the in the wind a little bit.
- 14:39But a brittle man breaks and this is what happens.
- 14:42I've seen this so many times in ministry over the last 20 years.
- 14:45A brittle man breaks relationships, he begins to
- 14:50isolate himself and ultimately he loses influence, right?
- 14:55He can't be in a difficult relationship with his boss.
- 14:58He can't be in a difficult relationship at work.
- 15:01He can't bend as he needs to bend.
- 15:03And I'm not talking about bending in our virtue or bending
- 15:06in our convictions, but just relationally.
- 15:08You need a, you need a give and take.
- 15:09You need a grace that kind of softens your relationship.
- 15:14And a bitter man can't do that, right?
- 15:16He's always right in his mind. He's quick to lash out, quick to
- 15:19get angry. I know guys that have been fired
- 15:22multiple jobs in a row and they still think it's their boss's
- 15:26fault. Like, bro, the one common
- 15:28denominator of you losing all these jobs is you.
- 15:31And often it often times it's because he's a bitter man,
- 15:35right? He thinks God owes him
- 15:37something. He thinks he's the smartest guy
- 15:38in the room. He thinks, you know, he's owed
- 15:41something from his boss or employees or his wife or his
- 15:43kids. And he's just so hard that he
- 15:46can't bend right. He hasn't been touched by grace.
- 15:52Now that this reminds me of a quote, one of my favorite quotes
- 15:55by CS Lewis from his book The Four Loves.
- 15:58And he says this, to love at all is to be vulnerable.
- 16:05Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly
- 16:09broken. If you want to make sure of
- 16:12keeping it intact, you must give it to no one, not even an
- 16:15animal. Wrap it carefully round with
- 16:19hobbies and little luxuries. Avoid all entanglements.
- 16:23Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness.
- 16:28But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will
- 16:33change. It will not be broken.
- 16:36It will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.
- 16:42To love is to be vulnerable. Now what a what a statement,
- 16:48right? If you love a dog, well,
- 16:50eventually that dog is going to do something you don't like and
- 16:53it's going to break your heart. And eventually that dog is going
- 16:55to die and it's going to break your heart.
- 16:56So the only way that you can prevent your heart from being
- 17:00broken is to just, you know, throw yourself into stupid
- 17:04things, into what the Proverbs called worthless pursuits,
- 17:08right? Surround your life with with
- 17:10hobbies and little luxuries, but avoid the great things of life,
- 17:15avoid real relationships. And I know many men, because
- 17:19they're dealing with bitterness, they suck at community, right?
- 17:22They don't know how to live in a missional community.
- 17:25They don't know how to ask for forgiveness and be forgiven and
- 17:29then forget about it with somebody.
- 17:30If you're living in real relationships, you're going to
- 17:32have conflict. There's going to be
- 17:34disagreements, there's going to be sin amongst brothers.
- 17:37And to be honest, it's not that big a deal if you know how to
- 17:41deal with your bitterness. But if you have a bitter heart,
- 17:44dude, as soon as somebody says something to you that you don't
- 17:46like, boom, you're going to bolt, right?
- 17:49You're going to get out of there.
- 17:51I know guys have been married multiple times, mainly because
- 17:54they have a bitter heart and they don't know how to deal with
- 17:57it. So what do we do with the what
- 18:00do we do with the bitterness that's in our heart?
- 18:01And I'm going to say this, and Josh said this in a sermon,
- 18:05bitterness is almost like the default operating system of our
- 18:10heart. When somebody offends us, we
- 18:14want to offend them. When somebody hurts us, we want
- 18:18to hurt them, right? That's normal.
- 18:21We would say this is from the doctrine of original sin.
- 18:24This is because we're fallen in our nature.
- 18:27We, we are not angels, right? We're more like devils.
- 18:31And so we need the gospel of Jesus Christ to come in and
- 18:36fundamentally change us in our nature so that we don't cling to
- 18:42this bitterness and we can actually root it out of our
- 18:44heart and we can grow to be resilient men.
- 18:48Well, the good news of the gospel is that Jesus doesn't
- 18:52leave us in this state of bitterness, right?
- 18:57We see it in what Christ did for us.
- 18:58Christ comes as the Son of God, and he lives as a perfect man,
- 19:04and he has every reason in the world to be bitter.
- 19:08He had reason to be bitter at God.
- 19:10God, why would you send me to do this?
- 19:11I'm going to be rejected by my people.
- 19:13I'm going to be betrayed by those closest to me.
- 19:14I'm going to be brutally and violently crucified and beaten
- 19:19on a rugged Roman cross. I'm going to look like an
- 19:21absolute failure, like I'm dying naked on a cross.
- 19:25It's one of the most shameful things that could possibly
- 19:27happen. But what do we see Christ do?
- 19:30He rejects the shame. He refuses to get bitter even on
- 19:35the cross. When he's looking at these
- 19:37foolish, wicked, sinful people crucifying him, He says, Father,
- 19:44forgive them for they know not what they do.
- 19:50Jesus there absorbed. See, he didn't have a hard
- 19:54heart. He absorbed the ultimate
- 19:58injustice without a root of bitterness springing up.
- 20:02He didn't say, you know, he didn't get mad at God for this
- 20:06happening. He didn't just blame all the
- 20:09people doing it, even though it was, he did have to, you know,
- 20:13endure all this suffering from the hand of sinners.
- 20:16No, he said he knew this was the Father's plan.
- 20:18He knew what it was ultimately going to accomplish and he gave
- 20:22grace. Even from the cross to the
- 20:25people that were crucifying him. Ephesians 432 right after it
- 20:33said to put away all bitterness. It says this Be kind to one
- 20:39another, tender hearted, forgiving one another.
- 20:43Listen as God in Christ forgave you now because we want to be
- 20:49strong and virtuous men and we want to have strong backbones
- 20:53and we don't want to have we want to have thick skin.
- 20:55We don't want to be easily offended.
- 20:57We do want to suck it up and lift up our drooping hands and
- 21:00strengthen our weak knees and pushes up push, you know, set
- 21:03our face towards whatever difficulty that we're called to
- 21:05do. And we want to be hard and we
- 21:07want to be tough. We we want to be all these those
- 21:09things. But it doesn't mean that we have
- 21:13to become hard hearted to do those things.
- 21:15The Scripture right here tells us be tender hearted and tender
- 21:20heartedness is not weakness. Jesus was tender hearted on the
- 21:24cross and that was the cross was a sign of his weakness.
- 21:28He, he knew that was God's plan for him.
- 21:31He consented to that plan. He set his face like Flint
- 21:33towards Jerusalem. He went, he stood in the face of
- 21:36Pilot, He stood in the face of the high priests and he he
- 21:40never, you know, he never balked on his profession, right?
- 21:45He never backpedaled anything. He that was the most manly thing
- 21:50he could do and yet he remained tender hearted at the same time.
- 21:55A heart that's functioning rightly is meant to be tender.
- 22:02It's living and active. We need to remember that, right?
- 22:07We don't have to get hard hearted in order to go through a
- 22:10hard and difficult season, or hard and difficult circumstance
- 22:14or a world that is at odds with us.
- 22:18The best thing that we can do for our families is provide for
- 22:23them our tender hearted love, right?
- 22:27This is why I'm providing. This is why I'm protecting.
- 22:30I'm not doing it begrudgingly. I'm not getting up and going to
- 22:33my 10/12/14 hour shift with a hard and bitter heart, right?
- 22:38You know, my wife gets to stay at home with my kids and I'm
- 22:40thinking about, oh man, she gets to stay at home and I got to go
- 22:43to this job. No, no, no.
- 22:44We do it with a tender hearted love.
- 22:46We come into our homes with a tender hearted love.
- 22:49That means when our kids meet us, we don't push them away in a
- 22:53hard hearted way. Dad's exhausted kids.
- 22:55Dad's exhausted. No, come in ready to welcome
- 22:59them. Come in ready to talk to them.
- 23:01Let I mean, you've been working hard all day, all day long for
- 23:05them, right? We need to remember what we're
- 23:08fighting for. GK Chesterson has his great
- 23:11quote. He says the true soldier fights
- 23:14not because he hates what's in front of him, but because he
- 23:18love, he loves what is behind him.
- 23:22Well, what's behind us specifically there.
- 23:24He's talking about our families, right?
- 23:26We could bring that out. Our churches, our brothers in
- 23:30Christ. No, think about that.
- 23:32We're fighting these battles for our wives, we're fighting these
- 23:36battles for our kids, for our future grandkids, right?
- 23:41We want to fight these battles in our generation so they don't
- 23:45have to fight them in their generation, right?
- 23:47We don't want to leave them a legacy of unfought battles,
- 23:51right? Congratulations kids, we didn't
- 23:53do our job, but now we are expecting you to to do yours.
- 23:57No, it's our tender hearted love for them that pushes us out into
- 24:07our battles with the world. We're doing it for our children.
- 24:10We're doing it for our grandchildren.
- 24:12So if we want to fight like true soldiers, we've got to get rid
- 24:17of our bitterness and we've got to forgive one another as God in
- 24:21Christ has forgiven you. Now what?
- 24:24This means the path out of our own bitterness of heart is
- 24:32forgiveness rooted in gratitude for our own forgiveness.
- 24:38Complicated sentence. Let me say it again.
- 24:41The path out of our own bitterness of heart is
- 24:44forgiveness rooted in gratitude for our own forgiveness, right?
- 24:51So in other words, I remember how much Christ has done for me,
- 24:58right? I was born in sin.
- 25:00I I've sinned more times than I could count.
- 25:03I have offended a holy and a righteous God.
- 25:06There's no reason I should be accepted in His sight.
- 25:08There's definitely no reason I should be adopted into His
- 25:11family. And yet, in spite of all of my
- 25:14sin, Christ came and lived a perfect life in my place.
- 25:17He died a substitutionary death in my place because of my sins.
- 25:22And He earned for me a righteousness that's not my own.
- 25:25Martin Luther called it an alien righteousness.
- 25:27Christ was perfect, and now he gives that perfection to me.
- 25:31The Father accepts that and now looks at me as though I'm
- 25:35perfectly righteous, I'm holy, and I'm set apart.
- 25:37He's forgiven all of my sins, right?
- 25:40And he's adopted me into the family of God because of what
- 25:43Jesus has done for me. All of that is sheer grace.
- 25:46It's all sheer grace, right? So I don't want to get what I
- 25:49deserve. What I deserve is death and
- 25:51hell. I want to get what Christ has
- 25:53earned for me, life and life more abundantly.
- 25:56Now here's the idea. When I accept that from Christ,
- 26:00I get a new nature, right? I get a new heart, I get the
- 26:03spirit of the living God in me, I get forgiveness, I get
- 26:07adoption. I get all these things.
- 26:10When someone sins against me, I have to bring it into that
- 26:14equation, right? I've sinned this much against a
- 26:18holy and righteous God, and they've sinned this much against
- 26:22a Sinner like me, right? Christ forgave me this much, I
- 26:27definitely can forgive them this much, right?
- 26:31That's what we have to do. When we remember how much we
- 26:35have been forgiven, right? Our sin against the holy God,
- 26:38we're then freed to release others sins against us.
- 26:43This is the way out of bitterness, right?
- 26:46This is why I say in every wedding sermon that I do that a
- 26:50Christian marriage is is really unbreakable because the
- 26:54experience of Christ forgiving my sins is the very power that
- 26:58enables me to forgive my wife's sins, right and my children's
- 27:03sins. And this puts the grace of God
- 27:08at the center of a home and it drives out that spirit of
- 27:11bitterness. And we have all got to get good
- 27:14at preaching that, preaching the gospel to ourself if we want to
- 27:19grow up into godly, virtuous, joyful men.
- 27:23We don't want this path that you see so many dudes go on and by
- 27:27the time they're 50-60 years old, they're angry, bitter old
- 27:31men, right? We don't want that for us.
- 27:34And it's not going to be like that for us if we remember how
- 27:38to preach the gospel to ourself every day, every single day.
- 27:42So here's 4 practical steps for US men.
- 27:48If you're dealing with bitterness, and we're all going
- 27:50to be dealing with it in some measure, first confess it
- 27:53honestly to God, right? So just say, Father God, I
- 27:57confess, I'm dealing with bitterness.
- 27:59I'm bitter at this person. I'm bitter at these people.
- 28:02And I confess that to you. And I ask that you would help me
- 28:05repent, change directions from that sin.
- 28:08Then you're going to replace that bitterness by preaching the
- 28:12gospel to yourself, and you're going to replace it with
- 28:14gratitude. Say, Father God, I thank you
- 28:18that you didn't get bitter towards me.
- 28:20And you know, just send me to hell.
- 28:23Thankfully, that you gave me grace and you've washed me clean
- 28:26and you've given me forgiveness, and I've got an eternal home
- 28:29that one day I'll get to experience and I'll get to see
- 28:31you face to face. Father, would you give me that
- 28:33grace again? Would you remind me of that
- 28:35grace again? I want to be grateful for what
- 28:37you've done for me. A heart that is blooming with
- 28:41gratitude will not grow bitterness. 3rd, you choose
- 28:46forgiveness actively even when you you don't feel like doing
- 28:49it. Father, I choose to forgive my
- 28:51wife for this. I choose to forgive my kids.
- 28:53I choose to forgive my boss. I choose to forgive that brother
- 28:57so and so that did whatever he did, right.
- 29:00And then the last thing you do is you just go back to the cross
- 29:04and meditate on the cross, right?
- 29:07Look how resilient Christ was. Look how tender hearted Christ
- 29:10was. Look how forgiving Christ was.
- 29:13And then you're asking God to make you into the image of
- 29:18Christ from 1° of glory to the next, like the Scripture tells
- 29:22us. So that's the that's what I
- 29:24wanted to talk about today, guys.
- 29:25The idea is bitter men are brittle men.
- 29:29They crack under pressure, they hurt those they love, and they
- 29:33fail to obtain the grace of God. But resilient men in Christ are
- 29:37strong because they're humble, they're forgiving, and they're
- 29:41tender hearted. Now if bitterness has taken
- 29:44root, the day is the day to start to uproot it.
- 29:49Run to the cross, receive fresh grace and stand firm, not in
- 29:53your hardness of heart, but in Christ's strength.
- 29:58Thanks for listening guys. If this hits home in any way,
- 30:00please share it with the brother.
- 30:02Like it, subscribe and join me next time as we continue to
- 30:06build godly men in this week in effeminate culture.
- 30:10Until then, be strong in the Lord and put away all
- 30:13bitterness. God bless you men.
