- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is the 31st.
- 0:15The very. Last day of January 2025 and
- 0:21it's a Friday. Well done for making it to the
- 0:22end of the week. In fact, it is quite an ending
- 0:25today. Because today.
- 0:27Brings the end not just to this week but to the end of this
- 0:31year's Bible reading plan we make the plans go all the way to
- 0:35the end of January and that's where the new plan begins and
- 0:38the beginning of February and in.
- 0:39Fact today. Brings us to the end of.
- 0:42Four years. Of daily Bible reading.
- 0:45Four years. I can scarcely imagine that we
- 0:48have been sitting down each day, or running together, or driving
- 0:52together, whatever you get up to.
- 0:54Each day. For four years.
- 0:55And for some of you, you've been along for that whole ride, as I
- 0:58certainly have been. But wow, what an.
- 1:01Absolute joy. And privilege it has been,
- 1:04friends, to sit down with our God every day and to hear His
- 1:08Word and to pray through it, and to invite that to shape us and
- 1:13to shape our days as we live our life of praise and of service to
- 1:18our glorious, glorious God. And so here we are.
- 1:21Four years on. And not about you, but only just
- 1:24getting started. Yes, there are many, many, many
- 1:27more years for us to spend in God's Word together.
- 1:31So I thank you and I look forward to many, many more to
- 1:34come. All right, enough
- 1:36sentimentality. We are going to.
- 1:39Finish. The Book of First Kings today
- 1:41and then next week. We will look forward to.
- 1:44All of the amazing books of the Bible that we're going to dive
- 1:47into in the year ahead. Boy, there are some Cracker
- 1:50Jacks in there, but. That's next.
- 1:52Week's conversation. For now, why don't?
- 1:54You sit back. And listen with me.
- 1:57As we read together. First Kings, chapter 22.
- 2:11For. Three years there was no war
- 2:13between Aram and Israel. Then, during the third year,
- 2:17King. Jehoshaphat of.
- 2:18Judah went to visit King Ahab of.
- 2:20Israel during the visit, the king of Israel said to his
- 2:24officials. Do you realise that the.
- 2:26Town of. Ramoth Gilead belongs to.
- 2:28US. And yet we've done nothing to
- 2:31recapture it from. The King.
- 2:32Of ARAM. Then he turned to Jehoshaphat
- 2:35and asked. Will you?
- 2:37Join me in battle to. Recover.
- 2:39Ramoth, Gilead, Jehoshaphat. Replied.
- 2:42To the. King of Israel.
- 2:43Why, of course, you and I are as one.
- 2:47My troops are your troops, and my horses are your horses, then,
- 2:53Jehoshaphat added. But first, let's find out what
- 2:56the Lord says. So the king of.
- 2:59Israel summoned the prophets, about 400 of them.
- 3:02And asked them. Should I go to?
- 3:04War. Against Ramoth Gilead or should
- 3:07I hold back? They all replied.
- 3:10Yes, go right ahead, the Lord will give the king victory.
- 3:15But. Jehoshaphat asked.
- 3:17Is there? Not a prophet of the Lord here.
- 3:19We should ask him the same question the king of Israel
- 3:23replied to Jehoshaphat. Ah, there is one more man who
- 3:26could consult the Lord for us, but I hate him.
- 3:29He never prophesized anything but trouble.
- 3:32For me. His name is Makaya son of Imlah,
- 3:37Jehoshaphat replied. That's not the way a king should
- 3:40talk. Let's hear what he has to say.
- 3:44So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said,
- 3:48quick, bring Makaya son of Imlah.
- 3:52King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah, dressed in
- 3:56their royal robes, were sitting on Thrones at the threshing
- 3:59floor near the gate of Samaria. All of Ahab's prophets were
- 4:03prophesying there in front of them.
- 4:05One of them, Zedekiah son of Kanana, made some iron horns and
- 4:10proclaimed, This is what the Lord says, with these horns you
- 4:15will gore the Arameans to death. All the other prophets agreed.
- 4:20Yes, they said, go up to Ramoth Gilead and be victorious, for
- 4:25the Lord will give the king victory.
- 4:28Meanwhile, the messenger who went to get Makaya said to him,
- 4:32Look, all the prophets are promising victory for the king,
- 4:36be sure that you agree with them and promise success.
- 4:40But Makaya replied, As surely as the Lord lives, I will only say
- 4:45what the Lord tells me to say. When Makaya arrived before the
- 4:50king, Ahab asked him, Makaya, should we go to war against
- 4:55Ramoth Gilead or should we hold back?
- 4:59Makaya replied sarcastically, Yes, go up and be victorious,
- 5:04for the Lord will give the king victory.
- 5:08But the king replied sharply, How many times must I demand
- 5:12that you speak only the truth to me when you speak for the Lord?
- 5:15Then Makaya told him in a vision.
- 5:19I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains like sheep without
- 5:24a shepherd, and the Lord said Their master has been killed.
- 5:29Send them home in peace. Didn't I tell you?
- 5:33The king of Israel exclaimed to Jehoshaphat.
- 5:36He never prophesized anything but trouble for me.
- 5:40Then Micaiah continued. Listen to what the Lord says.
- 5:44I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the armies of
- 5:48heaven around him on his right and on his left, And the Lord
- 5:53said, Who can entice Ahab to go into battle against Ramoth
- 5:58Gilead so he can be killed? There were many suggestions and
- 6:03finally a spirit approached the Lord and said, I can do it.
- 6:08How will you do this? The Lord asked.
- 6:12And the spirit replied, I will go out and inspire all of Ahab's
- 6:17prophets to speak lies. You will succeed, said the Lord.
- 6:23Go ahead and do it. So you see, the Lord has put a
- 6:28lying spirit in the mouths of all your prophets, for the Lord
- 6:32has pronounced your doom. Then Zedekiah, son of Kanana,
- 6:38walked up to Makaya and slapped him across the face.
- 6:42Since when did the spirit of the Lord leave me to speak to you?
- 6:47He demanded and Makaya replied. You will find out soon enough
- 6:52when you are trying to hide in some secret room.
- 6:56Arrest him, the king of Israel ordered.
- 6:59Take him back to Ammon, the governor of the city, and to my
- 7:02son Joash. Give them this order from the
- 7:05king. Put this man in prison and feed
- 7:09him nothing but bread and water until I return safely from the
- 7:13battle. But Mackay replied, If you
- 7:16return safely, it will mean that the Lord has not spoken through
- 7:21me. Then he added to those standing
- 7:24around everyone, mark my words, Sir.
- 7:29King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah LED their
- 7:33armies against Ramoth. Gilead, the king of Israel said
- 7:37to Jehoshaphat, As we go into battle, I will disguise myself,
- 7:42so no one will recognise me, but you wear your royal robes.
- 7:47So the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into
- 7:50battle. Meanwhile, the King of Aram had
- 7:54issued these orders to his. 32. Chariot commanders attack only
- 7:59the king of Israel. Don't bother with anyone else.
- 8:03So when the Aramean chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat in
- 8:06his royal robes, they went after him.
- 8:10There is the king of Israel, they shouted.
- 8:13But when Jehoshaphat called out the chariot, commanders realised
- 8:17he was not the king of Israel and they stopped chasing him.
- 8:21An Aramean soldier, however, randomly shot an arrow at the
- 8:24Israelite troops and hit the king of Israel between the
- 8:29joints of his armour. Turn the horses and Get Me Out
- 8:33of here. Ahab groaned to the driver of
- 8:35his chariot. I'm badly wounded.
- 8:39The battle raged all day and the king remained propped up in his
- 8:43chariot, facing the Arameans. The blood from his wound ran
- 8:48down to the floor of his chariot, and as the evening
- 8:51arrived he died just as the sun was setting.
- 8:56The cry ran through. His troops were done for.
- 9:00Run for your lives. So the king died, and his body
- 9:04was taken to Sumeria and buried there.
- 9:07Then his chariot was washed beside the pool of Sumeria, and
- 9:11dogs came and licked his blood at the place where the
- 9:15prostitutes bathed, just as the Lord had promised.
- 9:19The rest of the events in Ahab's reign and everything he did,
- 9:22including the story of the Ivory Palace and the towns he built,
- 9:26are recorded in the book of the History of the Kings of Israel.
- 9:31So Ahab died, and his son Aiziah became the next king.
- 9:37Jehoshaphat son of Assa, began to rule over Judah in the fourth
- 9:41year of King Ahab's reign in Israel.
- 9:43Jehoshaphat was 35 years old when he became king, and he
- 9:47reigned in Jerusalem 25 years. His mother was a Zuba, the
- 9:52daughter of Shilhai. Jehoshaphat was a good king.
- 9:56Following the example of his father Assa, he did what was
- 9:59pleasing in the Lord's sight. During his reign, however, he
- 10:04failed to remove all the Pagan shrines, and the people still
- 10:08offered sacrifices and burnt incense there.
- 10:11Jehoshaphat also made peace with the king of Israel.
- 10:14The rest of the events of Jehoshaphat's reign, the extent
- 10:17of his power and the wars he waged are recorded in the book
- 10:22of the History of the Kings of Judah.
- 10:25He banished from the land the rest of the male and female
- 10:28shrine prostitutes, who still continued their practises from
- 10:31the days of his father ASA. There was no king and Edom at
- 10:35that time, only a deputy. Jehoshaphat also built a fleet
- 10:40of trading ships to sail to OFA for gold, but the ships had
- 10:44never set sail, for they met with disaster in their home port
- 10:48of Ezion Giba. At one time Aiziah son of Ahab
- 10:53had proposed to Jehoshaphat, Let my men sail with your men in the
- 10:57ships. But Jehoshaphat refused the
- 10:59request. When Jehoshaphat died, he was
- 11:03buried with his ancestors in the city of David.
- 11:06Then his son Jehoram became the next king.
- 11:10Aiziah son of Ahab, began to rule over Israel in the 17th
- 11:14year of King Jehoshaphat's reign and Judah.
- 11:17He reigned in Samaria two years. But he did what was evil in the
- 11:22Lord's sight, following the example of his father and
- 11:25mother, and the example of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had
- 11:29LED Israel to sin. He served Baal and worshipped
- 11:33him, provoking the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as
- 11:38his Father had done. Ah Lord, we hear generation
- 11:51after generation following the the ways of their Father so
- 11:55often. Ah, but you are our Father, and
- 11:59we don't only get shaped by our earthly families, but you, our
- 12:02Heavenly Father. In your generosity and kindness
- 12:06you shape us. You, through your Holy Spirit,
- 12:12come to us and you grow in us these beautiful fruits, these
- 12:18fruits that would make us ambassadors of your Kingdom,
- 12:22Your Kingdom of mercy, your Kingdom of patience, your
- 12:26Kingdom of kindness, Your Kingdom that shuns the values of
- 12:30this world and shows your way and your nature.
- 12:37So Lord, I just pray that you continue to shape us in love and
- 12:41that we, like you, our Father, might continue your good work in
- 12:45the world around us. And we thank you for your
- 12:48Scripture that we can see so richly who you are and that as
- 12:53we learn more about you, that each word would shape our hearts
- 12:59to be more like you. We love you, our heavenly
- 13:03Father, and we thank you for giving us truth.
- 13:06Truth not in the words of the Scriptures, but truth in the
- 13:10person of Jesus. May He continue to inspire, to
- 13:15shape, and to draw us ever nearer to Him and to you, our
- 13:20loving God. And we pray all of this in His
- 13:23name, Amen.
