- 0:04Podcast. This is a show where we discuss
- 0:07the critical crossroads that shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The
- 0:11Boring Company, and Neurolink. I'm your host, Will Walden.
- 0:15Spacex's Starship program underwent a transformative year
- 0:19in 2024, with advancement spanning test flights,
- 0:22infrastructure, and also spacecraft development.
- 0:26Now, SpaceX conducted 4 major Starship flights, achieved a
- 0:30successful booster catch, introduced the next generation
- 0:33Starship Block 2, and significantly enhanced their
- 0:36production capabilities to the completion of Star Factory and
- 0:40Mega Bay 2. These milestones marked critical
- 0:43steps in refining the Starship system, which aims to
- 0:46revolutionize space travel by sending people back to the Moon
- 0:49and on to Mars and cargo even further than that.
- 0:53Now, at the beginning of the year, the Massey's testing site
- 0:56about a mile away from Starbase, was still under development,
- 1:00with foundational infrastructure just taking shape.
- 1:02And while the booster and ship cryogenic proof stands were
- 1:05operational, the construction of the Ship Static Fire Stand was
- 1:09still ongoing. But by summer, the Ship Static
- 1:12Fire Stand became fully functional, and Ship 26 was the
- 1:15first to test the bad systems. Now this achievement set the
- 1:20tone for subsequent progress at Massey's throughout the year,
- 1:24and there's still work to be done there.
- 1:26Now the further improve efficiency.
- 1:28SpaceX expanded Massey's tank farm by adding four new liquid
- 1:32oxygen tanks. The upgrade allows for
- 1:34simultaneous ship and booster cryogenic proof testing while
- 1:38retaining the ability to static fire a ship without requiring
- 1:42refueling. Importantly, these upgrades
- 1:45reduce disruptions to the local community as testing no longer
- 1:48necessitates closures of Hwy. 4, but rather only the road leading
- 1:52to Massey's, which is about a mile long.
- 1:54And it's a long dirt Rd. You really don't want to drive
- 1:57on it anyway, so there's no reason to be down there now.
- 2:02SpaceX completed the Star factory to a state-of-the-art
- 2:04facility designed to accelerate Starship production.
- 2:08Most of the Starship Star factory is completed.
- 2:11I should say, they didn't completely complete it, but
- 2:14they're really close. And the factory encompasses over
- 2:171,000,000 square feet of floor space dedicated to manufacturing
- 2:22and inventory storage. The centralized facility enables
- 2:26engineers and managers to work alongside production lines,
- 2:29enhancing coordination inefficiency.
- 2:31And notably, the factory's tallest section is designated
- 2:35for nose cone assembly, as visible through its glass
- 2:39frontage. You can see it from the road you
- 2:42can drive by, and you can see them assembling nose cones right
- 2:47there at Star Factory. Now, Mega Bay 2, another major
- 2:50addition to Star Base, replace the older High Bay as the
- 2:53primary ship assembly site. Mega Bay 2 boasts 3 advanced
- 2:57work stands equipped with integrated work platforms that
- 3:01provide full vertical access to ships without the need for
- 3:04scaffolding. This upgrade has streamlined
- 3:07assembly processes, enabling faster and safer construction of
- 3:10starships now to minimize risk of foreign object debris or FOD
- 3:14contamination. Clean room cubicles have also
- 3:17been added near the ship. Access hatches now, while High
- 3:22Bay play the diminished role this year and remained active
- 3:25for specific tasks such as retiling operations on Ship 30
- 3:30and dismantling older ships like Ship 26.
- 3:33However, as Block 2 Starships enter production, SpaceX
- 3:36anticipates dismantling the high Bay and replacing it with a
- 3:40larger giga Bay to further expedite stacking operations,
- 3:44addressing a potential bottleneck in vehicle assembly.

- 4:13SpaceX began clearing land for a second Star factory, which is
- 4:17expected to surpass the size of the one at Star Base by a lot.
- 4:22The facility will support production for Starships
- 4:24launching from Kennedy Space Center, and the new Star factory
- 4:28is designed to include integrated high bays allowing
- 4:31complete vehicle assembly indoors, thus avoiding exposure
- 4:35to outdoor conditions. And once operational, the
- 4:38facility will significantly boost the pace of Starship
- 4:41roduction and enhance launch caabilities at PADS LC39A in the
- 4:46Perspective L or SLC 37. Now the launch site.
- 4:50Yes, Starbase saw substantial upgrades in 2024 as well.
- 4:54An orbital launchpad, a SpaceX replace vertical cryogenic tanks
- 4:57with 12 horizontal liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen tanks.
- 5:01While the horizontal configuration occupies more
- 5:04ground space, it reduces wear from exhaust exposure during
- 5:07launches, improving durability. These changes are being
- 5:11replicated over at LC39A in Florida.
- 5:15SpaceX also reinforced the chopsticks and launch tower to
- 5:18facilitate booster catches during landing attempts.
- 5:21Additionally, the sub orbital launch site previously used for
- 5:24test hops and early flights was replaced by the construction of
- 5:27Orbital Launchpad B. Now, this new pad features a
- 5:30bidirectional flame trench, a redesigned orbital launch mount
- 5:34with water cooled deck, and compact chopsticks similar to
- 5:37those at LC39A. And with these improvements, Pad
- 5:41B is expected to enable quicker turn around times between
- 5:44launches. However, they still have to go
- 5:47through regulatory hurdles and SpaceX must complete a tiered
- 5:50environmental assessment to secure approval for Pad B, as
- 5:54the original 2022 assessment had envisioned a different
- 5:57configuration for the second pad.
- 5:59This process, along with ongoing environmental impact statements
- 6:02are EIS for LC39A and SLC 37 could possibly delay full
- 6:08utilization of these upgraded facilities until later 2025,
- 6:14possibly into 2026 now. SpaceX conducted 4 ship flights
- 6:20or Starship flights in 2024, each providing valuable insights
- 6:24into the system's performance and areas for improvement.
- 6:27The year began with Flight 3 on March 14th, featuring Ship 28
- 6:31and Booster 10. This mission demonstrated a
- 6:33stable ascent with no engine failures, but Booster 10 was
- 6:37lost shortly after completing its boost back burn.
- 6:39Ship 28 suffered roll control issues during the coast phase,
- 6:44leading to the cancellation of a planned Raptor engine relight
- 6:46test and the vehicle ultimately reenter the atmosphere
- 6:50uncontrollably and disintegrated.
- 6:53Now Flight 4 launched on June 6th paired Ship 29 and Booster
- 6:5611.1. Despite losing 1 engine during
- 7:00ascent, the booster managed a controlled splashdown in the
- 7:03Gulf of Mexico. Ship 29 achieved a controlled re
- 7:06entry but faced challenges with its heat shield, nearly losing a
- 7:10flap and missing its intended landing zone.
- 7:13The Flight 5 on October 13th marked a pretty big milestone.
- 7:17With Spacex's first successful booster catch, Booster 12
- 7:20executed a flawless return to the launch site where it was
- 7:23caught by the chopsticks. Ship 30, equipped with an
- 7:26upgraded Block 2 heat shield, successfully completed its
- 7:29mission and landed on target in the Indian Ocean.
- 7:32Now the final Test slate of the year, Flight 6 on November 19th,
- 7:36featured Ship 31 and Booster 133113.
- 7:40Although the booster opted for a splashdown rather than a catch,
- 7:43Ship 31 successfully demonstrated the durability of a
- 7:47partially stripped heat shield by re entering and landing in
- 7:51the Indian Ocean. Now, the lessons from these
- 7:54fights were instrumental in the design of Starship Block 2,
- 7:57which incorporates significant upgrades.
- 7:59These include extended tanks, reposition flaps for improve
- 8:03aerodynamics, enhanced structural integrity, and the
- 8:05next generation heat shield. Block 2 ships are expected to
- 8:09take on more ambitious mentions, such as propellant transfer
- 8:12demonstrations and payload deployments.
- 8:14Possibly the first Starlink deployment, hopefully that would
- 8:18be great. Could be on block three, though.
- 8:21We'll have to see now. Looking ahead, SpaceX is laying
- 8:23the groundwork for an even busier year in 2025.
- 8:27With expanded production capacity, the debut of new
- 8:30launch pads, and refined spacecrafts, the program is
- 8:34poised to push the boundaries even more than they already
- 8:37have. Now.
- 8:39As this year ends though, SpaceX is focused on achieving its next
- 8:43goals, catching a ship demonstrating full large scale
- 8:46propellant transfer and reusing Starship vehicles for subsequent
- 8:50flights. And the next flight is in
- 8:52January, so we may actually see another catch of a booster in a
- 8:57few weeks. Now the Starship program in 2024
- 9:01has advanced the design of a reusable mega rocket, and we're
- 9:08looking forward to the future of Block 2 and Block 3 in the near
