  Spacex's Starship program underwent a transformative year

  in 2024, with advancement spanning test flights,
• 0:22
  infrastructure, and also spacecraft development.

  Now, SpaceX conducted 4 major Starship flights, achieved a
• 0:30
  successful booster catch, introduced the next generation
• 0:33
  Starship Block 2, and significantly enhanced their
• 0:36
  production capabilities to the completion of Star Factory and
• 0:40
  Mega Bay 2. These milestones marked critical
• 0:43
  steps in refining the Starship system, which aims to
• 0:46
  revolutionize space travel by sending people back to the Moon
• 0:49
  and on to Mars and cargo even further than that.
• 0:53
  Now, at the beginning of the year, the Massey's testing site
• 0:56
  about a mile away from Starbase, was still under development,
• 1:00
  with foundational infrastructure just taking shape.
• 1:02
  And while the booster and ship cryogenic proof stands were
• 1:05
  operational, the construction of the Ship Static Fire Stand was
• 1:09
  still ongoing. But by summer, the Ship Static
• 1:12
  Fire Stand became fully functional, and Ship 26 was the
• 1:15
  first to test the bad systems. Now this achievement set the
• 1:20
  tone for subsequent progress at Massey's throughout the year,
• 1:24
  and there's still work to be done there.
• 1:26
  Now the further improve efficiency.
• 1:28
  SpaceX expanded Massey's tank farm by adding four new liquid
• 1:32
  oxygen tanks. The upgrade allows for
• 1:34
  simultaneous ship and booster cryogenic proof testing while
• 1:38
  retaining the ability to static fire a ship without requiring
• 1:42
  refueling. Importantly, these upgrades
• 1:45
  reduce disruptions to the local community as testing no longer
• 1:48
  necessitates closures of Hwy. 4, but rather only the road leading
• 1:52
  to Massey's, which is about a mile long.
• 1:54
  And it's a long dirt Rd. You really don't want to drive
• 1:57
  on it anyway, so there's no reason to be down there now.
• 2:02
  SpaceX completed the Star factory to a state-of-the-art
• 2:04
  facility designed to accelerate Starship production.
• 2:08
  Most of the Starship Star factory is completed.
• 2:11
  I should say, they didn't completely complete it, but
• 2:14
  they're really close. And the factory encompasses over
• 2:17
  1,000,000 square feet of floor space dedicated to manufacturing
• 2:22
  and inventory storage. The centralized facility enables
• 2:26
  engineers and managers to work alongside production lines,
• 2:29
  enhancing coordination inefficiency.
• 2:31
  And notably, the factory's tallest section is designated
• 2:35
  for nose cone assembly, as visible through its glass
• 2:39
  frontage. You can see it from the road you
• 2:42
  can drive by, and you can see them assembling nose cones right
• 2:47
  there at Star Factory. Now, Mega Bay 2, another major
• 2:50
  addition to Star Base, replace the older High Bay as the
• 2:53
  primary ship assembly site. Mega Bay 2 boasts 3 advanced
• 2:57
  work stands equipped with integrated work platforms that
• 3:01
  provide full vertical access to ships without the need for
• 3:04
  scaffolding. This upgrade has streamlined
• 3:07
  assembly processes, enabling faster and safer construction of
• 3:10
  starships now to minimize risk of foreign object debris or FOD
• 3:14
  contamination. Clean room cubicles have also
• 3:17
  been added near the ship. Access hatches now, while High
• 3:22
  Bay play the diminished role this year and remained active
• 3:25
  for specific tasks such as retiling operations on Ship 30
• 3:30
  and dismantling older ships like Ship 26.
• 3:33
  However, as Block 2 Starships enter production, SpaceX
• 3:36
  anticipates dismantling the high Bay and replacing it with a
• 3:40
  larger giga Bay to further expedite stacking operations,
• 3:44
  addressing a potential bottleneck in vehicle assembly.
• 3:49

  SpaceX began clearing land for a second Star factory, which is
• 4:17
  expected to surpass the size of the one at Star Base by a lot.

  The facility will support production for Starships
• 4:24
  launching from Kennedy Space Center, and the new Star factory
• 4:28
  is designed to include integrated high bays allowing
• 4:31
  complete vehicle assembly indoors, thus avoiding exposure
• 4:35
  to outdoor conditions. And once operational, the
• 4:38
  facility will significantly boost the pace of Starship
• 4:41
  roduction and enhance launch caabilities at PADS LC39A in the
• 4:46
  Perspective L or SLC 37. Now the launch site.
• 4:50
  Yes, Starbase saw substantial upgrades in 2024 as well.
• 4:54
  An orbital launchpad, a SpaceX replace vertical cryogenic tanks
• 4:57
  with 12 horizontal liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen tanks.
• 5:01
  While the horizontal configuration occupies more
• 5:04
  ground space, it reduces wear from exhaust exposure during
• 5:07
  launches, improving durability. These changes are being
• 5:11
  replicated over at LC39A in Florida.
• 5:15
  SpaceX also reinforced the chopsticks and launch tower to
• 5:18
  facilitate booster catches during landing attempts.
• 5:21
  Additionally, the sub orbital launch site previously used for
• 5:24
  test hops and early flights was replaced by the construction of
• 5:27
  Orbital Launchpad B. Now, this new pad features a
• 5:30
  bidirectional flame trench, a redesigned orbital launch mount
• 5:34
  with water cooled deck, and compact chopsticks similar to
• 5:37
  those at LC39A. And with these improvements, Pad
• 5:41
  B is expected to enable quicker turn around times between
• 5:44
  launches. However, they still have to go
• 5:47
  through regulatory hurdles and SpaceX must complete a tiered
• 5:50
  environmental assessment to secure approval for Pad B, as
• 5:54
  the original 2022 assessment had envisioned a different
• 5:57
  configuration for the second pad.
• 5:59
  This process, along with ongoing environmental impact statements
• 6:02
  are EIS for LC39A and SLC 37 could possibly delay full
• 6:08
  utilization of these upgraded facilities until later 2025,
• 6:14
  possibly into 2026 now. SpaceX conducted 4 ship flights
• 6:20
  or Starship flights in 2024, each providing valuable insights
• 6:24
  into the system's performance and areas for improvement.
• 6:27
  The year began with Flight 3 on March 14th, featuring Ship 28
• 6:31
  and Booster 10. This mission demonstrated a
• 6:33
  stable ascent with no engine failures, but Booster 10 was
• 6:37
  lost shortly after completing its boost back burn.
• 6:39
  Ship 28 suffered roll control issues during the coast phase,
• 6:44
  leading to the cancellation of a planned Raptor engine relight
• 6:46
  test and the vehicle ultimately reenter the atmosphere
• 6:50
  uncontrollably and disintegrated.
• 6:53
  Now Flight 4 launched on June 6th paired Ship 29 and Booster
• 6:56
  11.1. Despite losing 1 engine during
• 7:00
  ascent, the booster managed a controlled splashdown in the
• 7:03
  Gulf of Mexico. Ship 29 achieved a controlled re
• 7:06
  entry but faced challenges with its heat shield, nearly losing a
• 7:10
  flap and missing its intended landing zone.
• 7:13
  The Flight 5 on October 13th marked a pretty big milestone.
• 7:17
  With Spacex's first successful booster catch, Booster 12
• 7:20
  executed a flawless return to the launch site where it was
• 7:23
  caught by the chopsticks. Ship 30, equipped with an
• 7:26
  upgraded Block 2 heat shield, successfully completed its
• 7:29
  mission and landed on target in the Indian Ocean.
• 7:32
  Now the final Test slate of the year, Flight 6 on November 19th,
• 7:36
  featured Ship 31 and Booster 133113.
• 7:40
  Although the booster opted for a splashdown rather than a catch,
• 7:43
  Ship 31 successfully demonstrated the durability of a
• 7:47
  partially stripped heat shield by re entering and landing in
• 7:51
  the Indian Ocean. Now, the lessons from these
• 7:54
  fights were instrumental in the design of Starship Block 2,
• 7:57
  which incorporates significant upgrades.
• 7:59
  These include extended tanks, reposition flaps for improve
• 8:03
  aerodynamics, enhanced structural integrity, and the
• 8:05
  next generation heat shield. Block 2 ships are expected to
• 8:09
  take on more ambitious mentions, such as propellant transfer
• 8:12
  demonstrations and payload deployments.
• 8:14
  Possibly the first Starlink deployment, hopefully that would
• 8:18
  be great. Could be on block three, though.
• 8:21
  We'll have to see now. Looking ahead, SpaceX is laying
• 8:23
  the groundwork for an even busier year in 2025.

  With expanded production capacity, the debut of new
• 8:30
  launch pads, and refined spacecrafts, the program is
• 8:34
  poised to push the boundaries even more than they already
• 8:37
  have. Now.

  As this year ends though, SpaceX is focused on achieving its next
• 8:43
  goals, catching a ship demonstrating full large scale
• 8:46
  propellant transfer and reusing Starship vehicles for subsequent
• 8:50
  flights. And the next flight is in
• 8:52
  January, so we may actually see another catch of a booster in a
• 8:57
  few weeks. Now the Starship program in 2024

  has advanced the design of a reusable mega rocket, and we're
• 9:08
  looking forward to the future of Block 2 and Block 3 in the near
• 9:14
