- 0:07On October 16th, 1976, the New York Yankees faced the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium for Game 1 of the 1976 World Series.
- 0:16This is the CBS Radio broadcast of Game 1 featuring announcers Bill White and Wynn Ellewitt.
- 0:22The Reds are baseball defending champions. Vicki Rivers takes the first pitch up to high.
- 0:26Vicki batted 312 for the Yankees on the year. The 8 home runs drove in 67 runs batting leadoff.
- 0:33He also stole 43 bases. The next pitch is low. Two balls, no strikes.
- 0:38The umpires, by the way, Lee Weier of the National League is behind the plate.
- 0:42Louis DiPiro of the American League at first base, Billy Williams, umpiring at second.
- 0:46He's the National League umpire. And Bill Deegan of the American League at third.
- 0:50We're swarming in left hand, Dave Phillipson right. There's a strike. Two balls, one strike on Rivers.
- 0:58It'll be Vicki Rivers, Roy White and Thurman Mutsen against Don Gellert here in the top half of the first inning.
- 1:06Here's a wind by the left hander and the 2-1 pitch. Pop foul straight back out of play.
- 1:11And it's two balls, two strikes on Rivers.
- 1:14Rivers had a fantastic last game against Kansas City as you know, Bill. The first four times he was up there completely upset him.
- 1:21He fascinates me.
- 1:22Well, when he gets on base, things happen. As when Pete Rose gets on base for the Cincinnati Reds, things begin to happen.
- 1:29We count now on Rivers. Two balls, two strikes. Vicki is from Miami, Florida. Still lives there.
- 1:35Here's the 2-2 pitch. Fast ball, slight foul, left side not a play. Count remains. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:42Bill, everything Vicki does is herky-jerky. He seems to be pulled together by wires. And yet when he pulls it all together, it's a fluid River there.
- 1:50Yes. They play them to hit to the opposite field. The posture over there to the line and left. Here's the 2-2.
- 1:57One run and a pitch. Oh, Rivers goes down a swing on high fast ball and there's one away.
- 2:03So Don Gellert coming out with heat and Rivers goes down swing.
- 2:07That's one way to keep him from stealing.
- 2:10Don't let him get on the base.
- 2:13That ball seemed to be a little on the high side and maybe Vicki was a little anxious.
- 2:18Well, when Vicki is a high ball hitter, most left-handed hitters are low ball hitters.
- 2:23But Vicki chops the high ball and drives it. The low pitch, he slaps it the other way on the ground.
- 2:28So there's one out, nobody on. Here's Roy White, a switch hitter. He's in the right-handed against Gullick.
- 2:32And the first pitch. Too high, a fast ball.
- 2:36White hit.286 on the air for the Yankees, hit 14 home runs and drove in 65 runs.
- 2:45Here's the 1-0 pitch. Fast ball is high again. Two balls, no truck.
- 2:50We're at the top of the first here at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 2:54The opening game of the 1976 World Series. There's one out, nobody on for the Yankees.
- 3:00The outfield straightens up. They play White straight away.
- 3:04Stealing on deck is Sir Mutt. Here's a 2-0 to White.
- 3:08Fast ball pops up right side. A foul territory after the far edge defense.
- 3:12They'll run out of room about two rows back behind the Cincinnati Red Dog on the first base side.
- 3:18They count on White now, two balls and a strike.
- 3:22Roy is a remnant from the previous great Yankee days.
- 3:25He came just as the Yankee magic seemed to disappear back in the late 60s.
- 3:29He's always impressed me as being Mr. Cool, right or left, nothing seems to bother him.
- 3:35I don't know what goes on inside, but outside he is always in command.
- 3:39He has certainly been one of the solid Yankees through the years.
- 3:42He came up as an infielder, played second base, moved him to left field.
- 3:46He's done an excellent job. He's a senior Yankee at point of service.
- 3:49They count on two balls and a strike on White.
- 3:52Gullit now looking at bench for a sign, gets it and a pitch.
- 3:55Fast ball bounce faster and off the glove of Rose. Picked up by Concepcion, the throw is hit down.
- 4:02The Cincinnati Reds come up with a spark where Rose was left.
- 4:06The ball came off his glove. Concepcion was behind him, picked up the ball and got it to first base and they just get White.
- 4:12Beautiful reaction by Concepcion because he was actually leaning towards second base. I don't know why.
- 4:18And then when he saw the cam, you know how difficult it is to change directions with your body on an instant.
- 4:24He did it with no hesitation on the throw.
- 4:27So they put out 5'6 to 3 off the glove of the third base that beat Rose.
- 4:33Concepcion picked it up and showed a fine arm. So they're two outs now, nobody on for Thurm Mutsen, the Yankee catcher.
- 4:40Mutsen batted 3'02 on the year.
- 4:43His 17 home runs drove in 105 runs.
- 4:46Second year in a row Mutsen drove in 100 runs for the Yankees.
- 4:50And he takes the strike.
- 4:53That's a load of quality right there around home plate right now.
- 4:56Oh, Thurm Mutsen and Johnny Bench, who are the best catchers in baseball?
- 5:01In fact they might be the best in baseball.
- 5:04The next pitch is down in the third block nicely by Bench. It's a ball and a strike.
- 5:10Thurm's from Akron, Ohio.
- 5:13Up a guy.
- 5:15About to take way up the state between here and Cleveland.
- 5:20Two outs, nobody on. Top half the first, no score yet.
- 5:25And the 1'1' pitch to Mutsen. Fast ball.
- 5:28Ball gets down and away. It's a ball and good strike.
- 5:33It's the first batter that the Gullis didn't get behind on immediately.
- 5:36Then of course he's recovered with each one, but he looks fast.
- 5:39Yes he does. Of course the Yankees know that he has a good fast ball. It's a moving fast ball.
- 5:45Here's the 1'2' to Mutsen.
- 5:48Just missed outside. Two balls, two strikes.
- 5:52The Reds sit up around the infield with Rose at third.
- 5:54Concepcion the shortstop. Morgan at second.
- 5:56And Perez at first.
- 5:58The outfield, George Foster in left.
- 6:00Cesar Geronimo at center.
- 6:02And the Ken Griffey out in right.
- 6:04Johnny Bench fighting side for Gullis.
- 6:06And the 2'2' pitch. Low. Three balls, two strikes. The count is full.
- 6:11On deck for the Yankees is Lou Pennella, their designated hitter.
- 6:16Gullis now on the front side of the mound gets that ball, rubs it up a bit.
- 6:20Goes back, he'll go to the Rods bag.
- 6:23Bench backs up at third.
- 6:26Check that, Rose backs up at third.
- 6:28Pete Rose.
- 6:30That's been playing in close.
- 6:31Here's the 3'2'. Fast ball from Mutsen.
- 6:35Mutsen got a piece of it. It was held by Johnny Bench.
- 6:39So Don Gullis strikes out two of the three men he faces here in the south of the first.
- 6:43And that's the end of one half inning of play.
- 6:45The Yankees loving the Cincinnati Reds coming up.

- 7:49Hey Red Router, I would be encouraged by the way Don Gullich's ball is moving.
- 7:54If you had plenty of speed it was dipping down.
- 7:56The Yankees seemed a little anxious.
- 7:58If I were a New York Yankee Router I'd be encouraged too.
- 8:01Cause after all it's a miracle of the ninth inning.
- 8:03Which is much like the Bobby Thompson ending of the New York Giants a few years ago.
- 8:08The airplane ride and the awakening of the fact that they've got some blood and mostly champagne.
- 8:14You can expect them to be a little on edge.
- 8:17But you can take heart you Yankee Rooters.
- 8:19I've said nice things about the Reds.
- 8:21I remember the Miracle Mets after they went through that exhausting final game.
- 8:26Monty Urban for instance, I was with him until 7, 8 o'clock in the dressing room.
- 8:30I was so tired I didn't even go to the opening game.
- 8:32I couldn't. I went home.
- 8:34That son of a gun stole home in that game.
- 8:37They had enough left, you know, of whenever it is.
- 8:40So this game has just begun and the excitement my friend is on the way.
- 8:46Bill the Reds are in back.
- 8:48Yes they are. Win and here's Mr. Excitement.
- 8:50Pete Rhodes their third baseman.
- 8:52Rhodes can play anywhere.
- 8:54Wouldn't surprise me if they put a mitt on him, gave him a mask and put him behind the plate.
- 8:58Good hitter batting left-handed against Joel Alexander here in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 9:02A scoreless ball game so far.
- 9:04And the first pitch is outside at the ball.
- 9:06One of the reasons Billy Martin chose Joel Alexander to start the ball game is because a lot of them are speed pitchers.
- 9:13The next pitch is a fast ball. It's a called strike. It's one and one.
- 9:17And Martin feels that the change-ups and the curve balls would be the kind of pitch that would give the fast ball hitting Reds the most trouble.
- 9:25Here's Alexander's one-one pitch and it's outside. Two balls and a strike.
- 9:31And Joel is good. He is very, very good. As you know Bill he's had a couple of games where he held a team's hip for maybe three quarters of the game, seven, eight innings.
- 9:40Two-one pitch to Rhodes. This is outside. Three balls and a strike.
- 9:44He pitched about five games in a row where he went into the fifth and sixth innings without giving up a base hit.
- 9:52He can be tough.
- 9:54Here's a three-one to beat Rhodes.
- 9:56Swung on in the air left center. White moving to his left. The left fielder is there.
- 10:01He comes in a couple of steps and he backs off and lets the center fielder rivers make the catch.
- 10:05And there's one away.
- 10:07So white over there. It looks like the Yankee outfielders are having a little bit of trouble seeing that ball with.
- 10:13I don't know. I went down there and looked up and of course at that time it was a completely overcast guy but I notice it's clearing up now.
- 10:20The overcast is on right field and center and left field it's a patch of blue so the conditions seemingly have changed.
- 10:26In fact we have much more sunlight than we did.
- 10:29Here's Ken Griffey the right fielder. Left handed batter. He takes the strike.
- 10:34Ken Griffey from Denora, Pennsylvania batted 336 on the year for the Reds.
- 10:39Hits six home runs. Drove in 74 runs.
- 10:43Yankees playing more or less straight away. As a one strike pitch comes on.
- 10:47A bun is foul. Straight back. Griffey's on a bun is way on. No ball. Two strikes.
- 10:53I'm sorry Dale. I was going to say I had a question in my own mind.
- 10:57Was Alexander not having pitched for three weeks and the weather a little on the cold side today that at least in the opening inning he might have trouble with control. So far no.
- 11:06So I don't think so. You know Doyle pitched that way after the Yankees acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles.
- 11:10A lot of times he would have to miss a turn because you've got to send Hunter out there all the time.
- 11:15You've got to send Olson out there. You've got to send Ellis. So every once in a while Alexander would miss a turn. It would not affect his control.
- 11:22Here's the old two to Griffey. Get in the air. Left field. White coming on. He's there and he puts it away for out number two.
- 11:29The ball hit hard by Griffey but right to Roy White. So there's two outs and nobody on.
- 11:34Here at the bottom of the first to score this ball. Even the batter is Joe Morgan.
- 11:41Morgan batted 320 this year for the Reds. He had 27 home runs and Joe had 111 runs.
- 11:49In addition to that he stole 60 bases and he missed 22 games.
- 11:54From Bonham, Texas. Left handed batter. First pitch to him is a strike.
- 12:00He's the littlest intimidator I ever saw.
- 12:04He might be the most complete baseball player in baseball today.
- 12:09One strike pitch is low. It's one and one.
- 12:14Like to have fun. You remember Bill you were talking about when he found the bench was batting seven today. He said I wouldn't play.
- 12:20He put me there. Little nil at the bench.
- 12:23The next pitch is low. Two balls. One strike on Joe Morgan.
- 12:28Yankee outfield plays in the pool. So does the infield. They've got Stanley shortstop almost behind second.
- 12:34They give Morgan a lot of the left field line. As the 2-1 pitch comes off. Last ball is inside. Three balls to the strike.
- 12:42And the Cincinnati crowd warms to the possibility of seeing Mr. Scamper down there in first base.
- 12:49He can just see them. 3-1 pitch. Swung on to the deep right field. Up for the point.
- 12:55And the ceremonial trot around all three.
- 13:11Joe didn't steal a base. He just stole a mark from the World Series headlines.
- 13:15And he takes his cap off and salutes and stole a horse chair in the stands. And they just love it.
- 13:20And the Cincinnati Reds, Joe Morgan, pushes club out front, bottom of the first, right in the right field stand.
- 13:27A parabola line drive. It was full of power. He got it just where he wanted it and put it where it belonged.
- 13:35Well, he tried to steal a fastball by Morgan. And that's the worst thing you can do.
- 13:38Here's Tony Perez, the first baseman. He takes outside.
- 13:43I guess that's why they passed Joe, the Phillies did, in that situation where the bases loaded.
- 13:50Low. Two balls, no strikes on Perez.
- 13:54Joe Morgan got a 3-1 pitch and drove it way over the right field fence at the 375 mark.
- 14:02He gives the Cincinnati Reds a 1-0 lead. You're in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 14:06They count now. Two balls, no strikes on Tony Perez.
- 14:10And the next pitch, fastball on the outside corner, it's 2-1.
- 14:17On the season, the Reds hit 141 home runs. Also had a good running ball club. They stole 210 bases.
- 14:24The 2-1 pitch is outside, three balls and a strike.
- 14:28As everybody knows, they can hit the ball. As a team, they batted 280.
- 14:33The Yankees, on the other hand, hit 120 home runs during the season.
- 14:37They batted just under 270. 3-1 pitch bounced up the middle.
- 14:41To his left, down at Kansas, toward Big Sur.
- 14:44Rivers over quickly. He'll get the ball back in and Perez will hold it first base.
- 14:51One of the things when the Yankees worry about it, they're worried about it in Kansas City,
- 14:57they aren't a baseball service. They don't have a worry here with this.
- 15:02Ball seems to get to them a lot quicker than at home.
- 15:05Of course they have the natural size or the natural breadth.
- 15:08But both these clubs are truly, as you indicated in your last remarks, Bill,
- 15:13not only did they hit the ball out of the park, but it's unusual for a club to be so fast.
- 15:17Usually the heavy guys are, they're plotters, but neither one of these teams fit that description at all.
- 15:23Here's Danny Dreesen, the designated hitter, he thinks ball.
- 15:31That was a source of some controversy here.
- 15:34The use of the DH by everybody in the series.
- 15:39Off first is Perez. The one-oh pitch, runners going, throwing out a second and they have Danny.
- 15:45Brett Stanley putting the tag on Tony Perez, round number three.
- 15:49But the Reds pick up a run on the home run by Joe Morgan.
- 15:53They got one other hit, they leave nobody on base.
- 15:55At the end of one, the Cincinnati Reds won, the New York Yankees nothing.
- 16:00Now that you're about to buy a microwave oven, know the facts about features.
- 16:04These are the facts on the Amana Touchmatic Radar Range, the first microwave oven with a memory.

- 16:35The stainless steel interior is big enough to roast a family-sized turkey.
- 16:39The removable glass oven tray catches spills and boil-overs.
- 16:43All this plus Amana's full five-year warranty on the Magnetron.
- 16:47Covers Magnetron cost, labor charges, even the service man's travel expenses for five years.
- 16:53These are the facts.
- 16:54Amana believes once you know the facts, you'll buy an Amana Touchmatic Radar Range.
- 16:59Simple as that.
- 17:03Back at Riverfront Stadium, when I was with Bill White here, the score is one-nothing in favor of the Cincinnati Reds after the first inning.
- 17:10Joe Morgan deposited Joel Alexander fastball into the right field stands and that is the difference.
- 17:17As both these clubs now, I've had an opportunity to get rid of the butterflies,
- 17:21especially Joe Morgan. Alexander must know what it's like now.
- 17:25I understand, Bill, we just found out Alexander did pitch against the Reds at one time or another.
- 17:30Back in 1971, when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers, it was his only year in the National League.
- 17:37He played the Reds three times. Didn't beat them. He was on two against the Reds.
- 17:41You may know Billy Martin, the machinations of his line.
- 17:44He's out here talking to the play-down players at the moment. About what? Do you know?
- 17:49No, I don't. He's pointing over toward the Reds dugout on the first base side.
- 17:58And whatever they've talked about must have been. I can't think what they could have been talking about.
- 18:05I think he was asking a question because of the way he held his body, if there'd be such a thing as body language.
- 18:11I don't think he was being argumentative as such because the Reds crowd only needed his appearance.
- 18:16Oh yeah, to get it on a little bit. Here's Lou Pennella against Don Gullett, second inning.
- 18:21And Gullett misses high. The Reds lead one to nothing.
- 18:24It'll be Pennella, Chambliss, and the Nettles against the left-hander, Don Gullett.
- 18:30The 1-0 pitch is high again. Two balls, no strikes.
- 18:35Now Gullett struck out two of the three Yankees he faced at the top of the first. He was wild high though.
- 18:41Yeah, and he was going two and nothing. He did on the first two batters.
- 18:44Of course he knows. He goes out there and throws as hard as he can, or as long as he can,
- 18:48because Mark Yanderson has somebody to take care of him if he can't go too much further.
- 18:52In his first game in the National League Playoffs, will we let that go?
- 18:55The 2-0. Foul straight back, two and one.
- 18:58I was going to say, Don, Bill, in his first game of the playoffs he was overthrowing. He was too strong.
- 19:03This is what he told us. This is why he was wild.
- 19:06He had a similar experience in Fenway Park in the last World Series.
- 19:09In the opening innings he was wild because he was too strong. He had too much adrenaline flow.
- 19:15Two-one to Bonilla. Swung on line, base hit down the right side.
- 19:19It was over the corner. Bonilla around first base, digging for second.
- 19:23Up with the ball is Griffey. He gets it in, but not in time.
- 19:26So Lou Bonilla has the Yankees first base and in the ball game as he doubles down into the right field corner.
- 19:33Lou Bonilla down at second base, nobody out. And here's Chris Campbell.
- 19:41Of course, I'm sure everybody knew what Chris Campbell was doing in that final game against the Kansas City Royals.
- 19:48The first pitch from Mark Latella, young right-hander, hit it out of the ballpark and the Yankees won that ball game 7-6.
- 19:56The Royals played excellent baseball in that whole series.
- 19:59So here's Campbell's hit, left-handed batter. And the pitch to him.
- 20:06Oh, strike. Chris is from Dayton, Ohio, not too far from here. Born there, about at 293 this year for the Yankees.
- 20:13He's hit 17 home runs, drove in 96 runs. It's left-hander fairly well, as Gullich said.
- 20:19He checks Bonilla off second. The one-strike pitch, high. A ball on the strike.
- 20:24Phil, with Chambliss's close stance, that is the right foot extended so far towards the plate, how does he get around so fast?
- 20:31Well, he waits a long time, but he is quick with the bat. He likes the ball out away from him.
- 20:36The curve ball, he doesn't mind it being inside. But that fast ball, he wants to, wants to wait.
- 20:40Hits the ball mainly left center, right center, as Gullich says.
- 20:45The one-one pitch, swung on it on the ground to second base, that'll get the runner over.
- 20:49Morgan digs it out, fires on the Perez, they've got chance. Moving to third base is Lu Penella.
- 20:56So Penella, third baser, is one away, and it's up to Gregg now.
- 21:03Reds lead 1-0, we're playing the top of the second.
- 21:06And let's see how the steady red infield will play.
- 21:10Looks like they're going to shorten up just a bit.
- 21:13That's Rose at third, Concepcion on the shortstop. Morgan at second.
- 21:17And Perez at first, they're shortening up, they want to cut this run down.
- 21:22Nettles led the American League in home runs with 32, he also drove in 93 runs.
- 21:26And the first pitch to him, the fast ball, too hot.
- 21:29So the third, not in time. Diving back in, there's Lu Penella.
- 21:37Johnny Betch with a quick toss to third base.
- 21:41Penella just got back, now Dick Hauser, the Yankee third base coach, is telling Penella to be alert.
- 21:47They've got a rival behind the plate.
- 21:50Munson does the same thing, quite a bit.
- 21:53With Yogi Berra sending in a dugout, why don't we ever have three catchers like that on one field at the same time?
- 21:58Jack Spence just won on a miss. Ball on a strike.
- 22:02Hey, don't forget that guy coaching first base for the Amish.
- 22:05You mean Elston Howard?
- 22:06Yes.
- 22:07You mean the guy that hit a home run the first time he ever played in a World Series first time at bat?
- 22:11Another pretty good catcher. You've got Howard and Berra and Munson and Johnny Betch.
- 22:18And Bill Dickey and Mickey Cochran and Wally Shang and Methuselah.
- 22:25They got a ball on a strike on Nettles.
- 22:27Penella on a third one out here, the top half of second inning, the Reds have a one-to-nothing lead.
- 22:31Fast ball is high, two and one.
- 22:35On deck for the Yankees, Elliot Maddox.
- 22:41They play Nettles to pull in the outfield.
- 22:45I haven't seen anybody play third base in a long time, like, you know, since the days of Brooks when Brooks was great as this Nettles did.
- 22:52Two one Betches outside a breaking ball, three balls and a strike.
- 23:00George Foster on the left field is sheated a bit toward left center.
- 23:04A couple of steps toward right center.
- 23:06Good feed deep and right.
- 23:09Here's a three one.
- 23:11Swung on it deep to center.
- 23:13That's a good run in. Going back to Geronimo, he's on the edge of the warning track.
- 23:17He makes the catch.
- 23:18Penella tags a third base. He'll score easily.
- 23:21And we've got a tie ball game.
- 23:24Greg Nettles, a sacrifice flight, a deep center field driving in Luke Penella.
- 23:28And the game is all tied.
- 23:31The Yankees won, the Cincinnati Reds won.
- 23:35And with two outs the batter is Elliot Maddox, the right fielder.
- 23:44He's released Orange, New Jersey, and a right handed hitter.
- 23:49First pitch to it.
- 23:50That ball is swung on.
- 23:52Went too far. Tried to hold up. It's a strike.
- 23:55I assume, Bill, that Elliot is completely recovered from his problems with his knee.
- 23:59Well, the bad right-hand, he wears a brace on it. He can't run as well as he used to.
- 24:03Curve ball bounced only four thirds, charged by Rose.
- 24:06Fires on the first base, he's got it.
- 24:09Rose moving to his left, the front of the concept zone, makes the play.
- 24:12Yankees tied up with a run on a base hit. They leave nobody.
- 24:15Bottom of the second coming up.
- 24:17The Yankees won, the Cincinnati Reds won.
- 24:21There I was. Successful businessman, wonderful family, nice home, no crap grass.
- 24:27But I had to work for it all. I never actually won anything.

- 25:22CBS is in Cincinnati, Ohio, Riverfront Stadium for the World Series as we will be for as long as it continues.
- 25:28And we hope that you join us wherever you are around the world.
- 25:32And catching you up as we go into the bottom half of the second inning, it's all tied up.
- 25:361-1, Joe Morgan, the red second baseman, hit a home run into the right field stands in the bottom of the first.
- 25:42And the Yankees responded when Luke Pernubba doubled the right field, advanced on an infield out to second base,
- 25:48and was brought home by Greg Nettles' long sacrifice fly into center field.
- 25:53That's been the action so far. The Yankees have really had the center of the contest.
- 25:58Of course, the Yankees have had two chances to the reds' one.
- 26:02And as we return to the action, Bill White.
- 26:05All right. When Danny Treason, who was up when Perez was cut down trying to steal second base in the bottom of the first,
- 26:11gets the chance to start all over again, all even, with Doyle Alexander.
- 26:15Low curve is too high for Treason.
- 26:18I guess the National League fans are getting their first look at the designated interrules.
- 26:23Treason is a DH this afternoon for the reds. Left-handed hitter.
- 26:26It's one deep to right center. Going back is Rivers.
- 26:29Also Maddox. Rivers is center fielder calling on the edge of the warning track, and he's got it.
- 26:35One away.
- 26:37Oh, with one out, nobody on, bottom of the second, that'll bring on George Foster, the left fielder.
- 26:45And he's at some kind of a year when Elliott batted 3.06 at 29 home runs, and drove at 121 runs.
- 26:52And a kid of quiet determination and obvious sincerity in terms of who he is as an individual and as a man,
- 27:00that comes first before being a ball player, and as you've indicated, he is some ball player, too.
- 27:05Right-handed batter. Takes inside a ball. Foster is from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
- 27:12On deck is Johnny Bench. Imagine a lineup with Johnny Bench batting seven.
- 27:19Alexander's one old pitch to Foster. Misses low. Two balls, no strikes.
- 27:25There's one out, nobody on, playing the bottom half a second. I think the score is tied.
- 27:30He's one, the Cincinnati Reds one. Here's the two old to Foster. High three balls, no strikes.
- 27:41You know, Bill, for a kid who is seeking identity like George is, you know, looking for himself as a human being,
- 27:47I'm kind of surprised by his department around the plate where he deliberately tries to throw the pitcher off
- 27:52with his in-and-out, you know, pause and I'm not ready yet and anti-fancy stuff.
- 27:57Yes, well, you do anything you can to get a little advantage. Here's the three old.
- 28:01Fast ball right in, there's three and one.
- 28:04Mutsen does the same kind of a thing when he takes a lot of time getting into the batter spot.
- 28:10And the three one to Foster. Misses low, ball four.
- 28:17Oh, and one out, Foster walks. He's on at first base. During the season, he's sold 17 bases in 40 attempts.
- 28:24And that'll bring on the youngster from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Johnny Fetch to catch him.
- 28:30Fetch had an off year for Fetch, batted 234 for the rest. His 16 home runs, he drove his 74 runs.
- 28:37Well, he got a big home run in that third game against the Phillies.
- 28:40Yeah, he said it reminded him of 72 when he did the same thing against Pittsburgh.
- 28:44I guess he'll be remembered for those two blows.
- 28:47Fetch to Fetch, get on the ground, back up the middle, stand by the pitcher, the second for one, back to first double play.
- 28:52Alexander to Randolph, back on to Chris Tamlin. A one, four, three double play in the size of retired.
- 28:59No runs, no hits, nobody left. At the end of two, the score, the Yankees won, the Cincinnati Reds won.
- 29:06If you can see the writing on the wall, it's probably time to repaint again.
- 29:10Hi, Pat Summerall to suggest you use True Test Easy Care latex flat enamel paint from your Big Badger hardware store.
- 29:17So the next time you see the handwriting on the wall, all you'll need to do is wipe it off.
- 29:22Stains, grease, and grime can't readily penetrate Easy Care's hard enamel finish, so they simply wash away.
- 29:28And you don't need to repaint as often. And because Easy Care has a soft finish,
- 29:33you're going to have both the flat, smooth look of a latex and the washability of a tough enamel in your living room, family room, in fact any room.
- 29:41True Test Easy Care has earned the good housekeeping seal of approval, and it's available at your True Value hardware store.
- 29:48For a more velvety finish, you'll want True Test Satin Hue flat interior latex.
- 29:52Satin Hue has the finest quality flat, smooth finish in 48 decorator colors plus white.
- 29:58See the complete selection of True Test paint exclusively at your participating True Value hardware store.
- 30:04True Value, more than just a name, their way of doing business.
- 30:07I was going to say the third round, but it's only the third inning here in the World Series where the stars tied up.
- 30:14Yankees won, Reds nothing. If you joined this great, late rather, we feel great that you are able to make it,
- 30:21and CBS hopes that you will make it for as long as this series goes.
- 30:24Minimum of four, maximum of seven right now. Nobody's ahead.
- 30:28Through two, Joe Morgan's right field home run in the first inning.
- 30:32Bonetta's two base hit to right field advanced on an infield ground ball,
- 30:37and Greg Nettles brought him home with a sacrifice fly into center field.
- 30:42If you just went through a tunnel or under a bridge where it drops, you have radio reception.
- 30:49That's what's happened.
- 30:50As we get going in the third inning here at Riverfront Stadium, and the little guy from Brooklyn came by way of Pittsburgh.
- 31:00Prince rookie that I can remember in a long time, maybe if ever, who was on the All-Star squad, little Willie Randolph.
- 31:06All right, when Willie? About a 267 for the Yankees on the year.
- 31:10From Brooklyn, born down in Holly Hill, South Carolina.
- 31:14That's right, and it's on the ground, the concept's the only shortstop who takes it out, flips on the first base, and there's one away.
- 31:21Randolph, first ball inning, gets the ball higher, but right to concept the O.
- 31:25He did, and on this turf a few feet either way, and Davey would have had a tough time corralling that ball because it was on the nose.
- 31:32Here's Fred Stanley, the shortstop. Stanley took over the shortstop position for the Yankees about three quarters into the season.
- 31:39He had been splitting it with Jim Mason.
- 31:43That's right in it, and he takes inside a ball. Stanley will take a lot of pitches.
- 31:48He'll duck under the high pitch, back off the inside pitch, he'll make Gullit draw a lot of pitches.
- 31:55Here's the 1-0 to Stanley. He takes the strike, it's one and one.
- 32:00He reminds me of other endfielders who have done it on what has been described as intangibles.
- 32:05I'm not taking away his fielding, but at the plate he works on the intangibles.
- 32:09The 1-1 pitch is a call strike, too. First guy to come to my mind, Willie, Eddie Stake, of course.
- 32:15Sally Healish. That's right. Any number of them. I think he was the guy I had in mind.
- 32:20The 1-2. Call strike, Brady, a fastball that just got the outside corner.
- 32:27Gullit has talked up his third strike out there to us.
- 32:30How about Nelly Fox?
- 32:33Oh, Nelly with that bottle back, he could put the ball almost anywhere.
- 32:38I never saw Willie Healer, my father used to tell me about him, but Nelly's batch, remember the barrel of it was almost the same at the fat end as it was at the handle.
- 32:49He hit one of the fifths and he hit the line drive someplace.
- 32:52Here's Pinky Rivers, struck out in the first against Gullit. 1-1 to score, top of the third.
- 32:57Bounce over the mound, charged by Morgan, the second baseman, off balance throw, just in time.
- 33:02Good play by Morgan, the put out 4-3. Yankees throw three up three down to the top of the third.
- 33:08Bottom of the third coming up, the scores tied. The Yankees 1-1 to Cincinnati Reds.
- 33:13Here comes the king, here comes the big number one.
- 33:18But wiser, dear the king, you second to none.
- 33:23Can't say but wiser, you've said it all. Here comes the king of this, the lady of that dear control.
- 33:33But wiser, dear the one that's leading the rest. And these hard aging makes it feel like it's there.
- 33:41When you say but one thing, don't tell you, so loud and clear.
- 33:46There's only one but wiser, dear, there's only one but wiser, dear. When you say but there's nothing left you can say.
- 33:55When you say but the king is right on his way. When you say but the king is calling, the king of callers.
- 34:05When you say but you've said it all. When you say but you've said it all.
- 34:10And I support St. Louis Missouri.
- 34:16The weather is a little nippy here at Riverfront Stadium so far in Cincinnati, but it hasn't affected the pictures that much.
- 34:21They've been in control of this game. At least Don Gullis and Doyle Alexander have only given up a run apiece.
- 34:27As we now rejoin the fray at the bottom of the third inning. And the Geronimo named Cezar.
- 34:35All right, when? Geronimo is a left-handed batter. He's the center fielder for the Reds.
- 34:40It's 3-0-7 this year. 50 points more than it last year. It's two home runs, 49 runs batted in.
- 34:47It'll be Geronimo, Concepcion, then back up top with four feet rows.
- 34:52As we're in the bottom of the third, we've got a tie ball game. The Reds and the Yankees all tied up in one apiece.
- 34:57Alexander's first pitch is popped left side. Nettles going back. He's there and he's got it.
- 35:03Greg Nettles, Yankee third baseman, making the catch. Geronimo got jammed with the slider.
- 35:08Popped it up to the Yankee third baseman, Greg Nettles. Oh, with one out, nobody on.
- 35:12That'll bring on Dave Concepcion, the shortstop. Concepcion batted 281 for the Reds this year.
- 35:20Hit nine home runs, drove in 69 runs.
- 35:25From Maragua, Venezuela. Another pretty good Venezuela shortstop.
- 35:31They're broadcasting the game back to Venezuela right by our side.
- 35:37First pitch is outside a ball. And to Chile and Nicaragua and all the Florida countries down there in South America.
- 35:48The 1-0, down low, two balls, no strikes. Of course, we're going around the world too.
- 35:55You know, I was thinking of Luis Alparicio. Pretty good shortstop. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:02Here's the 2-0 to Concepcion. That ball is in there 2-1-1. One out, nobody on, bottom of the third.
- 36:08Yankees won, Cincinnati Reds won. Reds have a run on two hits. The Yankees run on one base hit.
- 36:16White Sox had another pretty good infielder by the name of Luke Abling. He could talk with that fast.
- 36:22The 2-1, line left center, face it, it might go through.
- 36:27It's all going to the wall. Concepcion around for a second.
- 36:31Round second, he'll drop his wing. The ball is going to be close, and he's safe.
- 36:38Dave Concepcion found the gap between Roy White, the Yankee left fielder, and Mickey Rivers, the center fielder.
- 36:45All the way to the wall, and he's on at third base with just one away. Here in the bottom half of the third inning.
- 36:52He just seemed to time that ball perfectly, Bill. His swing was not a real savage, but he just got the wood on it and hit it hard.
- 37:03And the Yankees now have to bring their infielder, Concepcion at third base.
- 37:10One out. The game is tied. Yankees won red. Red threatened to go ahead. Speed row is set to 10.
- 37:19Alexander looking in at Munson for a sign and sets. Fits the road. Change up his moat.
- 37:24For the fair, Danny, just gets back.
- 37:28We talked about Ben, and we talked about Munson. They both tried that pickoff at third base.
- 37:32And that one was closer. Concepcion got his foot on the bag because Nettles got him on the hand almost simultaneously.
- 37:41That was real close.
- 37:42George Sugar, the red third base coach, tells Davey Concepcion to be careful down at third base.
- 37:49Down the set by Alexander. The one on the road. He takes high. Two balls, no strikes.
- 37:57Yankee infield of Nettles, Stanley, Randolph, Campbell, all shortened up for speed row.
- 38:04Osbill swung a bit toward right side.
- 38:08The set again by Alexander. The two older roads. Swung on, hit the air center field. That'll be far enough for a run.
- 38:15Rivers back. He's got it.
- 38:17The third base is scoring easily, is Dave Concepcion. And the Reds lead 2-1.
- 38:28Speed rows, tying to Mickey Rivers and center field, scoring Dave Concepcion from third base.
- 38:35And the Reds now lead it 2-1. Here in the bottom half of third, two outs down, the batter's Ken Dripie, the right fielder.
- 38:42Dripie's been up once, line to Roy White in left field. So he's 0-1.
- 38:48Line fouled into seats down the right side.
- 38:51Bill, Pete Rose's fly out was no fly. That was a solid hit ball. This one was a solid hit ball by Dripie.
- 38:58Concepcion was a solid hit ball, all in this inning.
- 39:03Well, they're touching up, Alexander, just a bit here in the bottom half of third inning.
- 39:09No ball, the strike on Ken Dripie.
- 39:13Yankee outfield plays into full.
- 39:17The end field more or less straight away. The one strike pitch, change up, is low.
- 39:22A ball on the strike.
- 39:32One ball, one strike on Ken Dripie.
- 39:36And a pitch, change up, one on a miss. Full lead with a straight change.
- 39:41One ball, two strikes.
- 39:44Now that's Alexander's best pitch, the straight change and the curve change.
- 39:49You know, the four hits in the ball game so far, Bill, three of them have been for extra base.
- 39:53The home run was triple and the double.
- 39:55Vanellas double, Concepcion triple, and Morgan's home run.
- 39:59The one, two to Dripie. The back ball that just misses inside. Two balls, two strikes.
- 40:05I think we're going to see a lot of extra base hits, especially here at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium.
- 40:12Balls carrying well.
- 40:14The two-two pitch, straight change, popped up left side.
- 40:17Backing up is Stanley. Now he backs off and the third base, Vanellas, is there.
- 40:22And Vanellas makes the catch for out number three.
- 40:25The Reds pick up another run on the triple and the sacrifice fly.
- 40:28They had one base hit, they left nobody on base.
- 40:31At the end of three, the Reds two, the Yankees one.
- 40:35In all my life, never won a darn thing.
- 40:37Thought I was a born loser.
- 40:39Then I played budget reddit cards, I can't wait to win sweepstakes, and I won!
- 40:43Because every licensed driver wins.
- 40:45Two first prizes of a new Chevrolet Caprice, all the way to terrific looking T-shirt iron-ons.
- 40:51What did I win? None of your business.
- 40:53Expires November 30th. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.
- 40:57We are mailing offer in national magazines. Rules are available at participating budget reddit car locations.
- 41:02Where GM and other fine cars are featured.
- 41:05World Series time means cold weather and time to start piling up that firewood.
- 41:09It's an easy job with a Remington gas or electric chainsaw.
- 41:12Lightweight, powerful, and available in assorted sizes.
- 41:15Tells you just about any cutting job.
- 41:17So after the game, drop by your nearest Remington dealer and ask him to show you one of the many value-packed Remington chainsaws.
- 41:23A Mighty Mike gasoline starting at $104.95 or the popular Lehman trim electric for as low as $29.95.
- 41:29Cutting wood? Think about Remington. The chainsaw in a class by itself.
- 41:36If we ever find out, Bill White and I will let you know what the cause of little sidelights during playing of the game.
- 41:43Billy Martin has talked to Gabe Paul. Gabe Paul, we understand, has talked to Commissioner Kuhn.
- 41:48And we don't know what they're talking about.
- 41:51And if we ever find out, we'll let you know.
- 41:54But we thought we would throw that in now so that if anything develops later, why we would have been in it at the beginning.
- 42:01Well, I see the police and the baseball down behind the Cincinnati Reds.
- 42:04I got on a telephone.
- 42:07The Yankee officials are on the Yankee side on the third base side.
- 42:12While we're going to the fourth inning, the Reds lead 2-1 and Roy White will lead off against Don Gullin.
- 42:18Roy's been on one bounce stop and he takes high a ball. Roy chopped one to the left of the road.
- 42:23He's got his glove on it.
- 42:25Bounce over to Concepcion and Concepcion just gets white at first base in the first inning.
- 42:30The 1-0 pitch, Paul strikes it one-on-one. Roy's a switch hitter.
- 42:36Had a good year, bad at 2-86.
- 42:41Here's the 1-1 to White.
- 42:43Swung on Paul, straight back just under him.
- 42:47A ball and two strikes.
- 42:54The Reds have two runs on three hits. The Yankees one run on one base hit.
- 43:00We're playing the fourth inning. Roy White leading off against Don Gullin.
- 43:04Here's the wind and the 1-2 pitch.
- 43:07Flash ball misses inside, two balls, two strikes.
- 43:18Got to get the sign from Vich and the 2-2 pitch.
- 43:21Low, three balls, two strikes.
- 43:26Joe Morgan got the Reds off with his home run in the first inning with two outs, nobody, huh?
- 43:32Yankees got a run back in the second.
- 43:34A leadoff double by Pennella, he went to third on a bounce shot by Chambliss who scored on a sacrifice fly by Nettles.
- 43:40The Reds right back in the bottom of the third, triple by Concepcion, a sacrifice fly by Rhodes.
- 43:48Now the Reds had a fairly easy time getting into the World Series.
- 43:52They beat the Phillies three in a row. Yankees were extended all five games by the Kansas City Royals.
- 43:57Hey Bill White, you were covering the Yankee Kansas City games.
- 44:00The Phillies had the lead in every single one of those games and Foster and Vetch had to hit those home.
- 44:05Line, oh, the third base went up but he makes a grand.
- 44:09White hits a ball hard, right to beat Rhodes and there's one away.
- 44:14Don't you like the way I stopped?
- 44:16I like that.
- 44:18No, you were busy with the Yankees and the Kansas City Royals.
- 44:22That last game, well of course the two last games in the playoffs were just fantastic.
- 44:26Foster comes up in the ninth inning, hits a home run.
- 44:28Vetch ties it with a home run, they load the bases and then that number dribbler by Concepcion wins the game
- 44:33and then you guys with Chambliss in the last half of the ninth inning and that questionable play in the top of the ninth inning.
- 44:39You mean the play at second?
- 44:41The play at second.
- 44:42Nobody argued that play.
- 44:44Not even Al Cowles.
- 44:46We'll take that up later.
- 44:48Here's their bunch.
- 44:50Curveball hits down the right side of the foul back in the sixth.
- 44:53One out, nobody on here in the fourth inning. The Reds do, the Yankees won. Mutsun has been up once and gonna struck him out with a good tailing fastball.
- 45:02The Royals showed a lot of moxie in that series.
- 45:06I think they showed good judgment too and not complaining about that play.
- 45:09There's been the unpleasantness with the pop bottles, etc., etc. just prior to that, you know.
- 45:14The one strike Vetch has been in the air to the right side.
- 45:17Coming on his grippy, still coming. He's there now and he's got it.
- 45:21And they're two outs.
- 45:24So the Royals played that series without the guy who might be their best all-around player, Amos Otis.
- 45:30They played it without their best pitcher, Bud Beale. They had lost all year long.
- 45:34And they extended the Yankees to five full games before losing.
- 45:38I think both teams could be very proud of them.
- 45:41The show they put on for the fans.
- 45:44So there are two outs, nobody on here in the fourth, the batter, Lupinello, who doubled in score in the second.
- 45:49And getting back to that play at second, now we watch.
- 45:52Here's a pitch to Lupinello, it's a ball strike.
- 45:59Again, the city theme song, Bill, was Mr. Otis regrets.
- 46:03Remember that, Bill?
- 46:04Yes.
- 46:06Here's a one strike pitch. Curve ball is outside. One ball, one strike.
- 46:11Two outs, nobody on. Four of inning.
- 46:16Lewis put right field duties with Oscar Gamble during the year.
- 46:21And he also was a DH.
- 46:25That's got a Leixas sign. The one-one pitch.
- 46:28That's ball, slice foul, right side.
- 46:31One ball, two strikes.
- 46:34I don't know how Pennello got that over to the right side.
- 46:37It was in high and tight. And that kind of pitch I can remember seeing over my right shoulder,
- 46:41out of the right corner of my eye, and I had missed it again.
- 46:46Here's a one-two. Swung on, foul straight back.
- 46:50Well, Lupinello, you'll take the ball inside. Alvin Dart used to do that well.
- 46:54An inside-out swing. The ball would be inside, but somehow he'd pull his hands in,
- 46:58get the head of the batter, and slice that ball to the opposite field.
- 47:01I can understand that, but not when it's high. You can't do that when it's high.
- 47:06One and two on Pennello.
- 47:11Two outs and a pitch. Bounce foul again.
- 47:15Back to the screen. Pennello hanging in.
- 47:20And Gullard gets a new baseball. He'll work on it.
- 47:26Sealing on deck is Chris Cavill.
- 47:31Reds two, Yankees one. Worth inning.
- 47:36Gullard still reading signs for pitch. Now he rocks. Kits and deals.
- 47:39Bounce to first base. Right there's Perez. He'll take it himself.
- 47:43Side retired. An easy inning for Don Gullard. Three up, three down.
- 47:47Bottom of the fourth coming up. The score. The Reds two, the Yankees one.

- 48:20We have to do a better job.
- 48:22At the Opel Isuzu Information Center of America, Pandemonium Reigns
- 48:26has thousands of people try to find out who I born is.
- 48:29Hello, Opel Isuzu Information Center.
- 48:31Yeah, I think I've got an Opel Isuzu.
- 48:34Good for you, sir. Can you describe it?
- 48:36Well, it's about four feet high, brown, tan hair out its neck.
- 48:40It's got cute little eyes.
- 48:41Sir, I believe that's a Shetland pony.
- 48:43Oh, yeah. I can see that now.
- 48:46See the little hoofs?
- 48:48Opel Isuzu. A great new little car.
- 48:50And you'll be like Opel dealers.
- 48:52Back at Riverfront Stadium, we're approaching the latter half of the fourth inning
- 48:58with the Cincinnati Reds holding a 2-1 lead.
- 49:02Don Gullit has just had command of this game.
- 49:07Since Lupinella opened the second inning with the double,
- 49:10the next nine Yankees have gone down in order.
- 49:13In fact, he's retired 12 out of the first 13 he's faced.
- 49:16And now here's the guy that gave the Reds their first run.
- 49:19Mr. Do-It-Every-Way-And-Do-It-All, the chunky little left-hander
- 49:25with the twinkling eyes and the high voice.
- 49:27Joe Morgan.
- 49:28Joe Morgan, who homers to give the Reds a 1-0 lead in the first half.
- 49:32Alexander. Reds lead a 2-1.
- 49:36Bottom of the fourth.
- 49:39Here's the first pitch to Morgan. Change up this time is low.
- 49:42I don't think Alexander's going to try to sneak that fastball by Morgan again.
- 49:47Yankees play Joe to pull, both in the infield and the outfield.
- 49:51Fastball is fouled straight back.
- 49:53Got it away that time, put a little dip on it.
- 49:55Hits a ball on a strike.
- 49:58Outfield way around toward the right side from Morgan.
- 50:05Alexander's 1-1 pitch. Change up is high.
- 50:08Two balls on a strike.
- 50:11Morgan had 151 hits on the year for the Reds.
- 50:1430 doubles, 27 all-bronze, 111 runs batted in, and 60 stolen bases.
- 50:20And he takes high three and one.
- 50:22And that's the first home run Joe has ever hit in postseason play.
- 50:27And he hadn't done well in the league playoff, that is, as far as his hitting was concerned.
- 50:32Three-one pitch to him. Fastball, pop, foul.
- 50:35That'll be back out of play. No chance for Munson.
- 50:38And it's three balls, two strikes.
- 50:40Countless ball on Morgan.
- 50:44Joe, I mean, Bill, again, you didn't see the battle between Jim Cot and Joe Morgan.
- 50:49You know, Cot, the quick pitcher, Joe Morgan who likes to flap that left arm and get set.
- 50:53Cot wouldn't let him flap.
- 50:56Here's a bayhawk bench to Morgan.
- 50:57Fastball in the air left center. After his white, he's got a long run.
- 51:01Still going, he's there now and he's got it.
- 51:04And white ended up almost in straightaway center field.
- 51:08And there's one away.
- 51:12For a little guy, he's got such power, he just reached out with that pitch and went with it.
- 51:17And smacked it into left center field.
- 51:21A real good hit when you consider that he was more or less reaching for the ball.
- 51:26Ball's carrying well here this afternoon. Here's Tony Perez, the first baseman.
- 51:30Slow curve is a strike. Perez seemed to have centered back in the first.
- 51:34He was cut down trying to steal second base.
- 51:37Kamloops was playing behind him.
- 51:40As the old one-pitch comes on, change up again, foul straight back.
- 51:43No balls, two strikes on Perez.
- 51:47One out, nobody on. Bottom half to fourth inning. The Reds lead the Yankees 2-1.
- 51:55Alexander doesn't like the first sign for Munson.
- 51:58Now the pitch.
- 52:00Pitch is outside, one and two.
- 52:04The big good-natured giant of the Cincinnati Reds, Tony Perez, overlooked quite a bit.
- 52:12Betch, Morgan, Rose, change up, tough pass to third base, the narrow left field line.
- 52:18Perez around first base for second. He'll make it there standing as White's throw will come into third base.
- 52:28So let's pause now, 10 seconds for station identification.
- 52:31This is the CBS Radio Network.
- 52:33WBBM Chicago, NewsRadio 78, one o'clock, 48 degrees, the wind northwest 12 miles an hour.
- 52:44Well Tony Perez, two for two, a single and a double. He's down at second base, there's one out,
- 52:49and the batter is Andres, and the Yankees now are going to get some action in their bullpen.
- 52:54Nick Titrow goes down, a right-hander.
- 52:59L. Rod Hendricks goes out there. There's the first pitch, not Andres. Change up, called strike.
- 53:11The bullpen, the Yankee bullpen, down the Yankee left field foul line.
- 53:16The red bullpen down the right field foul line.
- 53:19Here's the one-strike pitch. Best ball's gone on a miss. No balls, two strikes on Andres.
- 53:24Danny's been up once, that was in the second inning, he flied to center field, so he's 0 for 1.
- 53:30Tony Perez down at second base, one man out. Alexander sets, send deals.
- 53:37Straight change is low, a ball and two strikes.
- 53:43They played recent to bull.
- 53:47White way over in left center, Rivers in right center, Maddox deep in the corner in right.
- 53:52Alexander checks Perez at second. The one-two pitch, get in the air, left center, whites right there.
- 53:58To his left just a bit, he's got it. Air two outs, and Perez goes back to second base.
- 54:05That'll bring on George Foster, the left fielder for the Reds.
- 54:11Alexander walks Foster back in the second inning, so he has the bat officially in.
- 54:19Foster hit 29 all-runs for the Reds, filled in 120 runs, one run during the regular season.
- 54:25Right-handed batters, so the Yankees will straighten up in the outfield.
- 54:29As Tidrow continues to throw in the Yankee bullpen down the left field foul line.
- 54:34Now Alexander sets, and a pitch, low a ball.
- 54:39As I recall in the series against the Fills, Bill, George Foster's contribution was two hits,
- 54:44and both of them into the left field stands. Both of them big hits for the Reds against the Fills.
- 54:53Alexander wants another sign for Munch, and now he sets.
- 54:57And the one-oh, breaking ball misses outside, two balls, no strikes.
- 55:02The Reds had a fairly easy time. They beat the Phillies 6-3 in Philadelphia in the first game.
- 55:06They beat them 6-2 in Philadelphia in the second game, and the third and final game played here at Riverfront Stadium.
- 55:12The home runs by Bench to Foster, and the Reds won it 7-6.
- 55:16Here's the 2-0 to Foster, he takes outside, three balls, no strikes. On deck is Johnny Bench.
- 55:24Joel Alexander pitching carefully to George Foster, with the Reds leading 2-1, playing the bottom of the fourth.
- 55:33Tony Perez, who doubled, is down in second there two outs.
- 55:37Now Alexander sets, and the 3-0 pitch. Swung on, bounced slowly towards third, Neto's charging.
- 55:43He's out, hits the rim. The runner interfered with Neto, so Perez is automatically out.
- 55:48I don't know if Perez hit that ball. Of course if he hit the ball, the runner Foster would be given a single.
- 55:55And we'll give you that when we come back. But right now, it's the end of four. The Reds to the Yankees, one.
- 56:01Every mile you drive with an inefficient dirty carburetor can cost you money.
- 56:06Your bar and oil fuel system treatment can help clean up your dirty carburetor.
- 56:10There's more to the story than that. Listen.
- 56:15Sounds awful, right? Intake valve deposits may be causing loss of power, and even damaged valves.
- 56:21Bar and oil fuel system treatment helps prevent intake valve deposit buildup, and may save you a trip to the repair shop.
- 56:30If the weather can lead to an iced up carburetor and cause your car to stall, bar and oil fuel system treatment can help prevent carburetor icing, and could save you from a walk in the cold.
- 56:41Here's the best part. Bar and oil fuel system treatment is safe for use with catalytic converters.
- 56:46And when you buy three cans of new fuel system treatment, we'll give you a dollar cash refund.
- 56:51Pick up an official coupon at a participating retailer. Supply proof of purchase, and bar and oil will make you your dollar.
- 56:57Right on. Run with us.
- 57:03Oh, let's look at that play, the last play that ended the fourth inning. That ball was in the third.
- 57:08Nettles was getting ready to catch the ball when Tony Perez ran into the ball.
- 57:12With the ball hitting Perez, he's automatically out.
- 57:15Nettles will get the put out because he was the closest Yankee fielder to the play, and George Foster will get a base hit.
- 57:23That's a fine art of deceiving a fielder by attempting to shadow or conceal a ball when they're running against it.
- 57:29Now, I don't remember 1924, but I just did the special last night, Bill, and Muddy Rule did that to Travis Jackson in 1924,
- 57:39forced him to miss up a grounder by Walter Johnson. The next baller won the game for the Senators.
- 57:44All right, here's Chris Chambliss. Line base hit left field.
- 57:47Chambliss jumps on the first pitch from Don Gallatin, singles, 11.
- 57:51That's only the second base hit in this ball game for the Yankees.
- 57:55So Chambliss on it first with a leadoff single here at the top of the fifth, the Reds leading by a score of 2-1.
- 58:02That was Chris's 12th hit in the postseason play, the 11 with you and the series against Kansas City, and now this one.
- 58:12Yeah, 11 in that championship series set a new championship series record.
- 58:16So Chambliss on it first. Nobody out here is bragging nettles. Pitch to him, bounce towards Zach at Morgan's head.
- 58:23Two concepts yielded one back to first double play.
- 58:27The Reds turn a quick 4-6-3 double play and quickly their two outs.
- 58:32You know when, Elliot, they talk about the Reds' power, talk about the Reds' speed, what good teams win it with defense.
- 58:43Well, these are both all-around teams, Bill, as we've been saying.
- 58:47Not only do they have the power, not only do they have the speed, but of course the speed is the fundamental beginning of defense.
- 58:55The outfielders can run around there like it was in the Olympics.
- 58:58Morgan at second took that ball, turned around on the whirl like Willie Mays did out there in the right field.
- 59:06These clubs are here because they are so good.
- 59:09And every single department, if I'd fall them anywhere, Bill, it would be pitching.
- 59:13Pitching might be a little bit short, especially with the Reds.
- 59:18Maybe that's only because Mark Anderson has a quick hook. Elliot Maddox takes the strike.
- 59:25Two outs, nobody on fifth inning. Reds to Yankees one.
- 59:29Maddox has been up once against Gullet. He bounced the rose at third base, so he's 0 for 1.
- 59:39The 0-1 to Maddox.
- 59:41Best ball is in the dirt, blocked by Bench, kicks off Bench.
- 59:45Lee Weier, the home plate umpire, picks it up and flips it back to Gullet to count a ball and a strike on Maddox.
- 59:54I think that ball skidded off Johnny's bare right hand.
- 59:58He's doing the best to be manly about it, but I think he took it.
- 1:00:02Might have touched him up a little bit, huh?
- 1:00:05Here's a 1-1.
- 1:00:07Best ball chopped just inside the third base line.
- 1:00:10Bates it and it'll go in the corner.
- 1:00:11Maddox around first, digging for second. He'll make it there.
- 1:00:14That ball kicks and pops out of left field.
- 1:00:16Now Elliot's trying for three. The throw there is cut off by Concepcion.
- 1:00:21So Maddox diving into third base with a dribble.
- 1:00:26Elliot hit that ball just inside the third base bag.
- 1:00:29To left fielder Foster, I thought it would go in the corner, but it hit the wall and bounced out.
- 1:00:33Foster was caught in the corner. He had to come back out.
- 1:00:36And by the time he got to that ball, Maddox was sliding into third base.
- 1:00:40And Gullet, who had been mowing them down nine in a row, has been touched for two hits in this inning.
- 1:00:45Of course, Shambles is wrong field single in that double play, which is so important.
- 1:00:49They should have put a wooded department.
- 1:00:51You know, when you're rooting for a club, which I'm not, but when you're rooting for a club, you always think that.
- 1:00:55Oh, they'd only, you know, if they'd only not done this, or if they only had done this.
- 1:01:00Oh, Maddox on a third, two outs. Here's Willie Randolph.
- 1:01:04Willie takes a strike.
- 1:01:07Randolph has been up once, hit the ball hard right to Concepcion, who dug it out and threw him out.
- 1:01:13Oh, Randolph is 0 for 1.
- 1:01:16The one strike pitch, outside, one ball, one strike.
- 1:01:20The Reds have two runs on five base hits, the Yankees one run on three.
- 1:01:25We're playing the top half of fifth inning.
- 1:01:28Elliott Maddox, third base with two outs.
- 1:01:33The 1-1 pitch, outside, two balls and a strike.
- 1:01:39I think Gullet wanted that one.
- 1:01:45Rose, close in at third base.
- 1:01:52Here's a 2-1 to Randolph.
- 1:01:54Swung on in the air center field, going back to Ronimo, still going.
- 1:01:58Near the warning track, he puts it away for out number three.
- 1:02:01Randolph has hit the ball hard twice, and he's 0 for 2.
- 1:02:05The Yankees, no runs on two hits. They leave a man.
- 1:02:08Bottom of the fifth coming up. The Reds lead the Yankees 2-1.

- 1:03:09By the way, tell them Pat Summerall sent you.
- 1:03:12Well, having gotten in my 10 percent worth, I want to remind you that game tomorrow at 8.15 Eastern Daylight Time,
- 1:03:21we're right here on this CBS radio station.
- 1:03:25And we're going into the last half of the fifth inning of the Reds by virtue of a Joe Morgan homerun.
- 1:03:32A Concepcion triple and a fly ball to the outfield hold the lead 2-1 as Doyle Alexander starts in the toil for the Yankees again.
- 1:03:42At the batter, the Reds catcher Johnny Bench.
- 1:03:46All right, when Bench has been up once, bounced into a double play, started by Alexander.
- 1:03:51That was back in the second inning.
- 1:03:54Johnny takes the curve ball, it's low.
- 1:04:00Bench had 16 homeruns during the season for the Reds.
- 1:04:04That ball is bowled straight back inside a play.
- 1:04:07One ball, one strike.
- 1:04:10You always wonder just how good this player, Bench, would be if he hadn't been cut down by injury so often in his career.
- 1:04:20Here's the 1-1.
- 1:04:22That ball is high, 2-1.
- 1:04:24Classic case in that direction too, Bill, was Mickey Mantle.
- 1:04:28Yes, Mickey was always injured.
- 1:04:32Lead Reezer.
- 1:04:34Reezer got hurt. These fellows have their injuries endemic to themselves.
- 1:04:39High, three balls and a strike.
- 1:04:41He just couldn't stay away from fences. I mean the wooden kind that were in outfield. He kept running into them.
- 1:04:47Rico Cardi is the same kind of player.
- 1:04:49That's right.
- 1:04:51Three balls and a strike on Bench leading off against Joel Alexander here in the fifth inning. The Reds have a 2-1 lead.
- 1:04:58The pitch swung on a miss. The pitch went after a high fastball and swung through it.
- 1:05:03Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:05:06Don Gullit has had his physical problems.
- 1:05:10And as you mentioned before, the Kansas City Rolls would have been a lot better off with Jim Busby.
- 1:05:153-2 pitch, Swalon bowled straight back.
- 1:05:18Good boy, Bill White.
- 1:05:22I want you to know that Bill White just stood up and like he wasn't. You won the Golden Glove first base.
- 1:05:30About seven times.
- 1:05:32I could miss it.
- 1:05:34Here's the payoff pitch. Swalon right center field. That's going to be a base hit in front of River.
- 1:05:40And Johnny Fitch will hold it first base.
- 1:05:43Johnny Fitch got a 3-2 fastball and ripped it to center field for a leadoff single here in the fifth inning.
- 1:05:49Oh, Bench on it first. Nobody out that'll bring on Cesar Geronimo, the center fielder.
- 1:05:54And I want you to know that William DeColva White didn't hesitate for a moment.
- 1:05:59I had sort of faded out of the way by instinct, as it were.
- 1:06:06And Mr. White, who was a left-hander as it was, got up, put that left hand out, and Dougie, you have a ball.
- 1:06:12All right. Cesar Geronimo has been a one-pop to third. Alexander sets the deal. It's a fastball. Let's go.
- 1:06:21That was the sixth base hit for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:06:28And the first time in World Series history that I know of that a baseball broadcaster caught a foul ball during the game.
- 1:06:35Here's the set now by Alexander and the 1-0 pitch. Chain jump is inside.
- 1:06:41Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:06:43Rant Jackson, left-hander, gets up and starts loosening up for the Yankees.
- 1:06:46Cedro had been up earlier. Now it's Jackson.
- 1:06:52Johnny Bench on it first. Nobody out.
- 1:06:55The Reds lead 2-1, playing the bottom half of the fifth inning, as Alexander sets.
- 1:06:59Checks the runner. And the pitch. Swung on it on the ground to second. Rant's off. Stanley for one.
- 1:07:05Back to first, another double play.
- 1:07:07The Yankees turn a 4-6-3 twin killing, and they're two outs.
- 1:07:13That's a second double play. The Yankees have turned over. The Reds have turned one.
- 1:07:17Yeah, that returns in time with the Reds did in the last inning to wipe out Shamless.
- 1:07:21Just in time, or the Yankees would have had a run.
- 1:07:25Now there's nobody on with two outs. Nevada's Dave Concepcion, the shortstop.
- 1:07:29He tripled to left center field back in the third inning and scored on a sacrifice five-by-five feet rose.
- 1:07:34And Concepcion takes the strike.
- 1:07:41Davey Concepcion, bad at 281 for the Reds during the regular season.
- 1:07:48Her ball is outside. It's one-on-one. Concepcion had squared to bunt and took it.
- 1:07:53I've got nettles in quickly a couple of steps from third base.
- 1:07:58Not too easy to bunt on this service.
- 1:08:01Here's a 1-1 to Concepcion. Fastball hit on the ground, a shortstop. Stanley's there.
- 1:08:07Picks it up, flips on the first base. They just nip him at first base.
- 1:08:11The put-out 6-3. No runs ahead. Yankees turn to double play, and nobody's left on base.
- 1:08:16At the end of five, you're at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. The Reds 2, the Yankees 1.
- 1:08:22They loved you when you bought your little foreign car, but when you brought it back for a new muffler.
- 1:08:27Hi, Hugo. Yeah, that is it, please. Looking good. Say, I need a new muffler on my car.
- 1:08:34A muffler job? A muffler job? Here? Look, we've got a lot of important work here.
- 1:08:39Yeah, but gee, Hugo, I bought my car here. Please, all your car.
- 1:08:43If you could just... Maybe we could squeeze you in. I don't know. Let me consult my appointment schedule.
- 1:08:48There's a possible opening on the 5th of January. Oh, great. January?
- 1:08:52Yeah. Take it or leave it. All right, forget it. I'll take it.
- 1:08:56Foreign car drivers, you don't have to take it anymore.

- 1:09:28It's all inside the official 1976 World Series program, the one that sold it to series.
- 1:09:33We get the full rundowns on the divisional winners.
- 1:09:36It's selected newsstands. We even sent a check or money order for 250 to World Series program,
- 1:09:41Post Office Box 666 San Francisco, CA 94101. Of course, CA is California.
- 1:09:49That World Series program, Box 666 San Francisco, California 94101,
- 1:09:56the preceding brought to you on behalf of Major League Baseball.
- 1:09:59On behalf of the CBS Radio Network, Bill White.
- 1:10:02All right, when Elliott and Fred Stanley will lead off against Don Gullett,
- 1:10:06we're playing the top of the sixth, the reds lead 2-1.
- 1:10:09Gullett's fastball is high. Stanley struck out in the third.
- 1:10:13Oh, he's 0-1. It'll be Stanley Rivers, Roy White against Gullett.
- 1:10:17The 1-0 pitch, and they're a call strike. It's 1-1.
- 1:10:23We mentioned the first time, Stanley takes a lot of pitches.
- 1:10:29Chokes up on the bat, not known for his thick work. Good love, man.
- 1:10:34Here's the 1-1. High. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:10:39Reds got off to a 1-0 lead in the first on a home run by Joel Borgen.
- 1:10:47The Yankees tied it up in the second, a double by Fidele.
- 1:10:49Went to third on a bounce off court on a sacrifice fly.
- 1:10:52Reds went ahead 2-1 in the third, a triple by Dave Concepcion with one out.
- 1:10:56And a sacrifice fly by Pete Rhodes.
- 1:10:59So it's 2-1 reds. 2-1 pitch to Stanley. It's low ball three, three and one.
- 1:11:06And to complete that recap, Bill, the reds have out hit the Yankees 6-3.
- 1:11:12And for the sake of trivia, the Yankees have had both Titro and Jackson warming up.
- 1:11:173-1 pitch to Stanley. It's taken a call strike and the count is full.
- 1:11:20Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:11:24Both teams win L.A. playing flawless baseball in the field. Good defense.
- 1:11:29Pay off pitch. High ball four and Stanley walks.
- 1:11:35Oh, that's the first pass issued by Don Gullett.
- 1:11:41He's walked one now, struck out three.
- 1:11:44As it so often happens, he has walked a man he presumably has least fear from.
- 1:11:51Stanley had a pretty good series against the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:11:54I believe the Royals spent so much time worrying about Munson and Nettles and Chambliss and White and Rivers,
- 1:12:01that he forgot about Stanley. And he had an excellent series.
- 1:12:05So friends, that's first base. Nobody out here is Mickey Rivers.
- 1:12:09He was struck out and bounced out. Left-handed batter.
- 1:12:13And the pitch to Rivers. He bumps right back to the mound.
- 1:12:17Going to second base and they've got him there. Good plays by Gullett.
- 1:12:21Ball was put in just to the left of the first base side of the mound.
- 1:12:25Gullett bounced in and threw a strike down in Concepcion.
- 1:12:28Good play by Don Gullett. The put out, one to six.
- 1:12:32Now Rivers on the first base. Of course he can run.
- 1:12:36There's one out and the batter is Roy White.
- 1:12:39Rivers by the way stole 43 bases for the Yankees during the season.
- 1:12:46And now comes the confrontation that the people have been waiting for, I think in a sense,
- 1:12:50with Rivers on first, facing the pitcher.
- 1:12:53Gullett.
- 1:12:56And the quick bounces off first. Gullett sets and deals.
- 1:13:00And he misses outside.
- 1:13:04Reds lead two to one, Yankees, with Rivers at first base.
- 1:13:09And one out. See if Martin will start trying to play a little aggressive baseball here in the sixth inning.
- 1:13:18Gullett now sets.
- 1:13:20And a pitch. White takes the strike. It's one and one.
- 1:13:24Bill, both managers pre the playoffs went right to the commissioner and the presidents of each league
- 1:13:31about the new ball rules and pointing out that the other guys' pitchers, you know, were definitely here.
- 1:13:36Not my pitchers, their pitchers.
- 1:13:37That's right, to unsettle them. And I'm watching now to see whether any of it has any effect on a Gullett.
- 1:13:43Well, I've got it setting now. I'm looking over first base.
- 1:13:46The pitch to White. Hot. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:13:50One out, one on. We're playing the sixth inning. The Reds lead two to one.
- 1:13:54The whole deal, Bill, is you're supposed to step in the direction of the base you're going to throw to before you throw it.
- 1:14:01Well, left-handers always step toward home, throw the first, then step toward first.
- 1:14:09Of course, in the springtime they bring out those white lines and they call everything.
- 1:14:13But then once the season starts, they take those white lines up and those left-handers start balking again.
- 1:14:18Jerry Kuzma used to have a fantastic ball.
- 1:14:21Now the set-by Gullett.
- 1:14:24The 2-1 pitch. Rivers' going. Is high. Throw down a second. They're going to have a show bargain.
- 1:14:30Put the tag on Mickey Rivers.
- 1:14:33And he has stopped stealing the put-out. Two to four. And they're two away.
- 1:14:39The pitch to White was high.
- 1:14:42A perfect pitch for Bents to throw down a second base.
- 1:14:46He just got there and threw overhand. A perfect strike to Joe Morgan.
- 1:14:50And Morgan slapped the tag on Rivers.
- 1:14:54Oh, there's two outs now. Nobody on to count on White three and one.
- 1:15:01And the 3-1 pitch. Ball strike two. Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:15:08If they needed it, that's going to make the Reds feel pretty good.
- 1:15:13And the 3-2 pitch. Swung on line to left center.
- 1:15:16After it to the center, Bill Jeronimo, he's there and he's stopped the ball.
- 1:15:20White around first base, taking for seconds. And he's there standing up.
- 1:15:24Jeronimo thought he had that ball in his glove. It came out, and I think White also thought the ball was tough because he stopped it first base.
- 1:15:31Then he shifted gears and went on to second base. And Jeronimo will be giving a two-base error.
- 1:15:36Bill, the ball was fading to the right and he was running a full tilt to the left.
- 1:15:41As he got to the ball, shoulder high, it just hit off the thumb of his glove. He was running away from it.
- 1:15:47And I almost anticipated he would drop it. His glove sort of turned around.
- 1:15:52Well, that's the first air of the ball game in a key one.
- 1:15:56Because White now down a scoring position. He's potentially the tying run with two outs.
- 1:16:03And the Yankees' top RBI man, Thurman Munson-Nevada.
- 1:16:07Dullett struck Munson out in the first and got him to fly to right field in the fourth. So Thurman's over two.
- 1:16:13Dullett has given up just three bases.
- 1:16:18And the left descents. Checks White off second. Fitch to Munson. Swung on.
- 1:16:22Right base hit, right field. They're going to have a play. The throw home and they hold White at third base.
- 1:16:30Oh, it hit hard. A one hopper to right fielder. Ken Griffey and he threw the whole plate and they held White at third.
- 1:16:39Well, the Yankees now runners at first and third with two outs. And the batter's Lou Pennella.
- 1:16:46I tell you, the third base coach, Dick Hauser, did the right thing there, when Elliott. He'd have been dead.
- 1:16:52The throw was about 10 feet up on third base. But I think Johnny Bench would have been right in line, right on the line.
- 1:16:59Straddling the line and he would have been in the way. He would have stopped White.
- 1:17:03So Munson on at first. White on at third. Two been out. And Lou Pennella's a batter. Pennella has doubled and he's bounced to first.
- 1:17:16And the Reds have gotten the bullpen pretty active now for the first time. Up there is Wil McEnany.
- 1:17:25Pennella lines one down the right field line. It's going to be trouble and it's a foul ball. Just missed the line down there.
- 1:17:34Goes back in that corner with Elliott and that's about the only place we can't see here in this ballpark.
- 1:17:38But we have to look at the right field guy. I'm firing down that right field line, Dave Phillips.
- 1:17:43And he gave us the off signal there that it was off line. I can't see down in the corner either.
- 1:17:49Just beyond where the Reds are warming up. McEnany and Pedro Borbón are both warming up.
- 1:17:56McEnany the left-hander, Borbón the right-hander. We have Yankees on first and third. Two outs.
- 1:18:04Top of the sixth. The Reds lead two to one, Bill.
- 1:18:07And they count no balls and a strike on Pennella. Gullet now sets. Checks the runners. And the one strike pitch.
- 1:18:14And the one strike in the center of field. Morgan backing up. He's got it. Don't worry. A little hookback runner out behind second base.
- 1:18:20Made the catch and the side is retired. No runs. One hit, one error and two men left on base.
- 1:18:28We're going to the bottom of the sixth. The Reds two, the Yankees one.
- 1:18:33Once in a while you find someone who knows what to do. And that's someone you can talk to.
- 1:18:44Once in a while you find someone who cares about you. Someone you can talk to.
- 1:18:54For life and health insurance that puts your individual needs first, talk to your life underwriter.
- 1:19:00Your personal advice, personal service, and that special expertise in making the future secure.
- 1:19:05Your life underwriter. Only a phone call away.
- 1:19:09We all need someone to talk to once in a while. Someone to tell our dreams.
- 1:19:16We want you to help make those dreams come true. Your life underwriter wants to see you smile.
- 1:19:23That certain special someone you'll talk to once in a while.
- 1:19:53We're going to the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:20:03All right, here's Pete Rose against Dwell Alexander bottom of the sixth. Rose takes the punt. Balls down low and bounce back fast much all the way back to the screen. Speed got the bat back. One ball and no strikes. Rose is flying to center field and he drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. So he's 0 for 1 with a run batted in.
- 1:20:25Alexander's 1-0 pitch. Best ball is taken. A call strike on the outside corner. It's 1-1.
- 1:20:33At the top of the Reds batting order, Pete Rose, Ken Griffey, Joe Morgan.
- 1:20:39The 1-1 pitch. Change up. Low. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:20:47The Reds have two runs on six hits. The Yankees one run on four. Here's a 2-1 to Pete Rose. Swung on and fouled off left side. That'll be back out of play. They count two balls, two strikes.
- 1:21:00To be fair to Alexander, one of the Reds hits was one of those technical hits. Foster hit a ground ball that actually hit Parasin.
- 1:21:09By the rules of baseball, it becomes hit, but it was a routine ground ball.
- 1:21:14Alexander now has a new baseball. He rocks, kicks and deals a 2-2 pitch. Straight change is low. Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:21:25It's about the time when they begin to get to Doyle Alexander. They off pitch. Low ball for.
- 1:21:38Almost on cue.
- 1:21:42Second pass issued by Alexander. Pete Rose at first base.
- 1:21:48No outs. And the batter of the right fielder, Ken Griffey. Griffey has lined to wide and left. He's popped the nettles at third. Nettles now closes in at third base. He's looking for a punt.
- 1:21:58And Grant Jackson is on his feet in the dugout.
- 1:22:02Yep, he's getting his jacket. He'll be going out there.
- 1:22:06Chambliss holding on Rose at first. Pitch to Griffey. A change up. Bounce to Short. Stanley. Randolph went back to first. Will not be his time. And it gets past Chambliss, but it doesn't go too far.
- 1:22:16Ball was not hit hard enough to complete the double play, but they did get to fourth and second on Pete Rose, six to four.
- 1:22:22Randolph tried to complete the double play anyway, threw it low, but Griffey, he's running down to first base watching the play. He's got good speed, so he beat it out at first. He's there. One out battered Joe Morgan.
- 1:22:39Alexander now wants to exchange baseballs and Lee Weier of the National Eclipse of Manila.
- 1:22:46As Joe Morgan steps in, Morgan, the homeowner, with two outs, nobody on in the first. He flies left center in the fourth. So he's one for two.
- 1:22:55Little Joe from Bonham, Texas.
- 1:23:00Here's a pitch to Morgan. Change up is inside.
- 1:23:09Once again, the Yankees swing that outfield way around toward the right side. They give Morgan a lot of room out in left field.
- 1:23:17It's a ball that way he can run all day long. Griffey off first. He's checked.
- 1:23:23The one-oh pitch. Call of strike. Letter high fastball. It's one and one.
- 1:23:27Rivers of the Yankee tried. Bench, Bench got him. The Reds have not tried to run on Bunsen yet.
- 1:23:33They tried once with Perez. And that first inning when Campbell was playing behind them and Munsen cut him down. Of course, Perez doesn't have that speed anymore.
- 1:23:41And he was trying to sneak on the second base, but they got him. Throw the first base and Griffey's back.
- 1:23:47Griffey stole 34 bases for the Reds during the regular season so he can run.
- 1:23:53As Alexander says. Here's a one-one pitch. High. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:24:01A lot of managers, when do not like that guy to run off first with Morgan batting. They want to keep that first base but holding the runner on.
- 1:24:08Give Morgan a little more room to pull that ball.
- 1:24:11And as of now, I don't think Griffey is now he's edging off a little further than he had been before.
- 1:24:16Throw the first base and he gets back.
- 1:24:19I wonder if those walkie talkies are up here. Did Alexander hear it?
- 1:24:25Here's a set now. Another throw of the first base and Griffey's back again.
- 1:24:29Bill, are the Yankees using the walkie talkies that you know of?
- 1:24:32I believe they are. They use them only to place the outfielders and place the infielders.
- 1:24:38As Alexander said. And the pitch. Call strike. A fastball on the outside corner. It's two and two.
- 1:24:44Maybe we better explain, Bill, in case the folks hadn't heard that the Yankees do use walkie talkies up in the press box.
- 1:24:50Presumably to talk to the managers down in the dugout who dare upon wigwags like Connie Mack used to and places his outfielders for defensive pressure.
- 1:24:58Quote unquote.
- 1:25:01Here's a throw of the first base and Griffey gets back.
- 1:25:06Of course, the Kansas City Royals caught the Oakland Athletics using the same equipment in a bullpen and they weren't wigwagging the outfielders.
- 1:25:15And back again a first base and Griffey. Of course, they had some binoculars in Kansas City.
- 1:25:23But I don't think you can steal science from where that visiting bullpen is in Kansas City. They were looking at something else.
- 1:25:32Alexander backs off.
- 1:25:37One out. Griffey off first. Two-two pitch. Change is high. Three balls, two strikes on Morgan.
- 1:25:44Rensley two to one.
- 1:25:47Bottom half of sixth inning.
- 1:25:50Now Morgan backs out and looks down at his third base coach, George Shutter.
- 1:25:55Let's see if they'll move Griffey on the three-two pitch.
- 1:25:58He bounces off first. Now takes the half step.
- 1:26:02Now another half step.
- 1:26:05And he's going. The pitch is hung on and this throw down a second skips up and is bowled by the strike stop.
- 1:26:11Stanley and Griffey safe at second base. Morgan strikes out for the second out.
- 1:26:17Here Griffey a stolen base. He's down at second.
- 1:26:22Munson got rid of that ball quickly. He tailed down a bit. Stanley got in front of it.
- 1:26:26Made sure it would not go through him. But Griffey slid unstably at second base.
- 1:26:31And if I may, I did notice that that particular throw by Munson was a sidearm throw.
- 1:26:36The first one where he got Perez that you reminded us of was an overarm.
- 1:26:40When Munson throws that ball sidearm, when Elliott the ball tends to dip and go into the dirt,
- 1:26:45if he gets it up, it'll sail in the center of the field.
- 1:26:48Griffey now down at second. Two laps and here's Tony Perez, the first baseman.
- 1:26:52The line faces in left field. Griffey around third. He's going to score easily.
- 1:26:56And the Reds now lead it three to one. Tony Perez jumping on the first pitch to Joy Alexander.
- 1:27:02Now singling in the hole between the great metals in third baseman.
- 1:27:06And Perez down to shortstop. And Perez is now three for three.
- 1:27:10And the Cincinnati Reds lead it three to one.
- 1:27:13And the pressure baseball of getting the man in the scoring position.
- 1:27:16Griffey stealing second. Put him in a position to score on that base hit.
- 1:27:20And once again the Yankee bullpen gets up.
- 1:27:23Marky Lyle, the left-hander, and Dick Cidrow, the right-hander.
- 1:27:27And Dan Dresden steps in.
- 1:27:30And the Cincinnati Reds lead it three to one.
- 1:27:33And the pressure baseball of getting the man in the scoring position.
- 1:27:37Griffey stealing second. Put him in a position to score on that base hit.
- 1:27:41And once again the Yankee bullpen gets up.
- 1:27:44Marky Lyle, the left-hander, and Dick Cidrow, the right-hander.
- 1:27:48And Dan Dresden steps in.
- 1:27:51Pitch to it. Change up is a called strike on the outside corner.
- 1:27:55Dresden is over two against Joy Alexander.
- 1:27:58He's flying to center field, flying to left.
- 1:28:04Alexander sets. Here's a one-strike pitch.
- 1:28:07Another change up. Popped up. Third base side foul territory. Mutsen over there.
- 1:28:11And he's got it.
- 1:28:13Thurm Mutsen, the catcher, made the catch and foul a ground.
- 1:28:16Reds pick up another run.
- 1:28:18On just one base hit, they leave a man on base.
- 1:28:21And at the end of sixth, here at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, the scorer,
- 1:28:25the Reds three, the Yankees one.
- 1:28:31This is Phoebe Reeves talking.
- 1:28:33You know, they say the records are there to be broken in baseball.
- 1:28:37And brother, they've sure broken some records since I played shortstop
- 1:28:41for the old Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1956 World Series.
- 1:28:45But let me tell you about the record-breaker of the year, Levi Garrett chewing tobacco.
- 1:28:50Now, there's a name people knew and trusted before baseball was even invented.
- 1:28:55Well, now, the Levi Garrett people have come out with a fresh new chewing tobacco flavor
- 1:29:00that lives up to their proud tradition of quality and good taste.
- 1:29:04And talk about breaking records, people all over this country are making Levi Garrett
- 1:29:08the fastest growing brand of loose leaf chewing tobacco.
- 1:29:11Just taste that fresh new flavor and you'll know why.
- 1:29:14Look for Levi Garrett in the gold pouch with the picture of the original factory building on it.
- 1:29:20Fresh new flavor from a name you can trust.
- 1:29:23You know it's got to taste good. It's got the Levi Garrett name.
- 1:29:27Levi Garrett chewing tobacco.
- 1:29:31Quinn Elliott with Bill White back at Riverside Stadium in Cincinnati
- 1:29:35as the Cincinnatians chalk up their third run of the game in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:29:39Not a big batting display for the world's champions,
- 1:29:42but they can make so many things work for them in this game of baseball.
- 1:29:47The first man up, Rose, gets a walk. He's hopped out on a fielder's choice.
- 1:29:52Griffey on first, a speed ball. Steele second as Morgan strikes out and then the single to left.
- 1:29:58Cashier's the run and that's how they do it.
- 1:30:01It won't be heard around the world, but on the scoreboard it counts as a run.
- 1:30:05And they're ahead three to one with top of the seventh as Chris Chambliss gets ready to step in against Don Gullett.
- 1:30:12Chambliss has grounded the second and he's single to left.
- 1:30:14He's one for two.
- 1:30:17Here's Gullett's first pitch.
- 1:30:19Swung on a bit.
- 1:30:22Now we're seeing something down there that will be important in the late innings when at least that shadow is just around home plate.
- 1:30:28That ball's going to get hard to see in another 10 or 15 minutes.
- 1:30:33The one strike pitch is a call. Strike two, a fast ball.
- 1:30:36Gilled right in there by Gullett.
- 1:30:40Pitcher throwing out of the sunshine into the shadows.
- 1:30:42Tough for the batter to pick the ball up.
- 1:30:45Two strike pitch.
- 1:30:46Chris Chambliss couldn't get out of the way.
- 1:30:49He spun around and got hit on the shoulder.
- 1:30:51So he's on it first base.
- 1:30:52That ball got away from Gullett.
- 1:30:53He had with a head and a count no balls, two strikes.
- 1:30:57Trying to pitch Chambliss up and in.
- 1:30:59Chris couldn't get out of the way of the ball.
- 1:31:00He's down at first base.
- 1:31:02With nobody out in the batter's Greg Nettles, the third baseman.
- 1:31:07Nettles drove in the first run for the Yankees back in the second and again the only run the Yankees have scored with a sacrifice fly.
- 1:31:14Granted into a double play in the fifth.
- 1:31:16So he's 0-1.
- 1:31:19Nettles is a left-handed batter.
- 1:31:24Gullett, the left-hander, sets.
- 1:31:26And the pitch, high.
- 1:31:29Peruzza's playing behind Chambliss.
- 1:31:32The Royals did that.
- 1:31:34And Chambliss stole a base.
- 1:31:36In fact, he led everybody in that American League Championship Series and stole a base with two during the playoffs.
- 1:31:43I was about to say, Big Chris had a better lead than anybody I've seen in the game so far.
- 1:31:48At least a two-step lead over say what rivers it had.
- 1:31:53The 1-0 pitch swung on and bounced slowly towards second.
- 1:31:55Morgan, takes the runner, throws the first double play.
- 1:31:58Morgan, tacked Chambliss as he went by and flipped on to first base for the double play.
- 1:32:07Now Chris missed an opportunity to sort of hit Morgan and keep him from throwing that ball at first base as he ran on the inside towards the mound.
- 1:32:15Morgan tacked him, then threw on the first base.
- 1:32:17I think the base runner there has either got to flatten that second base or just stay there and keep bumping it.
- 1:32:21He cannot let him throw that ball at first base.
- 1:32:25Those are two outs.
- 1:32:28Once again, Pedro Borbón gets up along with left-hander Will McEnady.
- 1:32:36It's a second double play.
- 1:32:38The Reds have turned over this ball game and here's Elliott Maddox who has bounced a third triple.
- 1:32:43He's one for two and takes high ball.
- 1:32:49Top of the seventh.
- 1:32:50The Reds lead three to one.
- 1:32:52He locks nobody on for the Yankees.
- 1:32:56In the last three innings, Bill, the Red infield has been a big help to God.
- 1:33:02That ball is in a called strike. It's one and one on Maddox.
- 1:33:06In the fifth inning, Shambles led off with a single.
- 1:33:08Maddox hit into a double play.
- 1:33:10Rivers bunted into a forced play in the sixth inning and was cut down by Vance and now this play by Morgan and Perez.
- 1:33:17Yes.
- 1:33:18The one-one.
- 1:33:19Maddox takes high. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:33:22Of course, God helped himself back in that sixth inning after he walked Stanley.
- 1:33:26Rivers bunted and he got that ball.
- 1:33:29He had a chance at second base but he threw down a second and made a good play there getting Fred Stanley.
- 1:33:35Big play.
- 1:33:39The two-one.
- 1:33:40Swung on, fouled back.
- 1:33:44Had he not gotten Stanley there, the line drive in the center field that was dropped by Geronimo with a quarter run.
- 1:33:54Two balls, two strikes on Maddox with two outs.
- 1:33:57In the seventh inning, Gullit now has the new baseball, rubs it up.
- 1:34:01Back up top looking for a sign. The two-two pitch.
- 1:34:04Swung on, fouled back again.
- 1:34:07Just off the wall. Right in the count remains. Two balls, two strikes on Elliot Maddox.
- 1:34:13Save for the ball of Geronimo. Approximately overran there in center field.
- 1:34:16The defense has been very tight, right on the money.
- 1:34:20Come to the aid of the pitcher just when he needed it most on both sides.
- 1:34:24It completed a couple of double plays and so have the Aggies.
- 1:34:28Of course, it's hard not to field well on this artificial surface.
- 1:34:32Here's the two-two. Low one in the dirt. Three balls, two strikes on Maddox.
- 1:34:37Not too many bad outs on this surface.
- 1:34:41But not much time to make up your mind how you're going to field the ball and what you're going to do with it.
- 1:34:45So it's half a dozen, a one, and a dozen of the outs.
- 1:34:48It'll get there to you. Quickly.
- 1:34:51Both count on Maddox with two outs.
- 1:34:55Gullick winds and the payoff pitch. Low ball, four.
- 1:35:00Oh, Maddox walks.
- 1:35:04That's a second walk given up by Don Gullick.
- 1:35:09Oh, Maddox on it first with two outs. He's not a threat to steal.
- 1:35:13He's still playing with an E-brace on.
- 1:35:16The batter, Willie Randolph, the second baseman, he's hit the ball higher twice, but he's over two.
- 1:35:20A sharp ground ball to Concepcion in the third.
- 1:35:24Fly deep to center in the fifth.
- 1:35:27And the pitch to Randolph is low ball.
- 1:35:31Ratch leads three to one, top of the seventh.
- 1:35:36Now time is called.
- 1:35:41Larry Shepard, pitching coach for the Cincinnati Ratch, goes out.
- 1:35:44He wants to talk first of all to pitch.
- 1:35:47And then secondly to Don Gullick.
- 1:35:51Now Shepard's looking out at his bullpen.
- 1:35:58Larry Shepard. Looks like he wants to go back here. Going to let Gullick stay in.
- 1:36:06Shepard just went on for a few quick words. He walked slowly back to the Cincinnati Red Dugout on the first base side.
- 1:36:12The bench comes back behind the plate.
- 1:36:14Bill, in the first game that Gullick pitched in the playoffs, he tightened up in the eighth inning and he didn't pitch in the ninth inning.
- 1:36:20But I think at that time it was an injury to his groin rather than his arm.
- 1:36:24And maybe Shepard had detected a change in his motion at that point.
- 1:36:28Now he's ready. The 1-0. Low again. Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:36:37One thing Doc Ellis said coming out, which might be important,
- 1:36:42he said that Gullick can throw as hard as anybody in the windup.
- 1:36:46But from the set position or the stretch position, he loses a lot off that fastball.
- 1:36:52Ellis said that as a former Pittsburgh Pirate.
- 1:36:55Yes. Doc Ellis of course, with the Pirates, says he knows these Reds.
- 1:37:01Here's a 2-0. High ball three. Three balls, no strikes on Willie Randolph.
- 1:37:07He hit Maddox on it, first base, two out here in the seventh inning. The Reds have a two-run lead. They lead it three to one.
- 1:37:13And you can hear something called apprehension. It's rippling through the crowd here at Riverfront Stadium.
- 1:37:19Well, an empty set. And the three old pitches in there called strike at three and one.
- 1:37:25Now Randolph backs off, looks at his third base, Coach Dick Hauser. Hauser looking at it, Billy Martin.
- 1:37:30Now he gives a couple of sides to Randolph.
- 1:37:36Here's a set. The pitch. Ball strikes two. Three balls, two strikes on Randolph. So Maddox will be moving.
- 1:37:44Otto Valdez has just picked up a bat and he's moved under the on-deck circle.
- 1:37:48He'll bat for Fred Stanley if Randolph gets on.
- 1:37:52Now the set. Runner going. Payoff pitch is high. Ball four.
- 1:37:59So Gullick has walked two in a row here in the seventh inning.
- 1:38:03The Yankees have runners at first and second with two outs. And Otto Valdez is being set up to bat for Fred Stanley.
- 1:38:10Now Morgan calls time. He wants to talk to Gullick.
- 1:38:14The third pass issued by Don Gullick, two of them here in the seventh inning. He hit Chambliss.
- 1:38:19He had a no-ball, two-strike count on Chris Chambliss as Chris was leading off here in the seventh.
- 1:38:25The Nettles was up and he bounced one slowly to Joe Morgan who tagged the Chambliss and then threw on the first base to complete the double play.
- 1:38:32Then Gullick lost his control, walked Maddox, then he walked Randolph.
- 1:38:36So the Yankees have runners at first and second. There are two outs and Otto Valdez is batting for Fred Stanley.
- 1:38:43Valdez is a right-handed batter.
- 1:38:49Gullick sets and deals. Swung on and missed.
- 1:38:53Jim Mase has gotten up and he starts throwing in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:38:56Of course he'll come on and play shortstop for the Yankees in the bottom part of the seventh inning.
- 1:39:01Like you people say, Gullick reached back that time. Valdez, his swing was perceptibly behind the pitch.
- 1:39:09Here's a one-strike pitch. Swung on and bowled back. No ball, two strikes.
- 1:39:14We mentioned earlier when Elita bought that shadow and it's just about got home plate covered now.
- 1:39:20And the hitter, the catcher, and the umpire have a little bit more trouble seeing the baseball as the pitcher's throwing from the sunshine into the shadows.
- 1:39:29Two strikes on Valdez. Runners lead off first and second with two outs.
- 1:39:33The pitch outside, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:39:38Valdez on the year for the Yankees, batted 266 in two home runs and drove in 10 runs.
- 1:39:48Only got into 49 ball games.
- 1:39:53Now Gullick gets a sign and sets.
- 1:39:55The one-two. Swung on and the lead goes down to Lee.
- 1:40:00Big strikeout for Don Gullick. No runs, no hits, no errors by the Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:40:06The Yankees lead two men on base.
- 1:40:08We go in the bottom half of seventh inning into red three, the New York Yankees, one.
- 1:40:38When you say, but, you tell the world you know what makes it all the way.
- 1:40:48When you say, but, you say you're carrying on to only one, the king of the years.
- 1:40:56There is no other one. There's only something left.
- 1:41:00Because the king of the years is leading all the reds. When you say, but, my god, you've said it all.
- 1:41:10Sennheiser-Busch, headquarters, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 1:41:14I understand a couple of times I've said this is Riverside Stadium.
- 1:41:18Of course it is. It's Riverside Drive and Riverfront Stadium.
- 1:41:23Both very nice places to be at different times.
- 1:41:28Game two tomorrow night here at Riverfront Stadium.
- 1:41:31Airtime 8.15, Eastern Daylight Time right here on this CBS station.
- 1:41:40The Yankees have been threatening in the last couple of innings.
- 1:41:43They've left five men on, I see, in the last two innings, but have failed to crack through.
- 1:41:48The Finch hit it at that time. Mahalo, the last guy going down.
- 1:41:54It was a healthy swing, but really not a threat the way he took his cuts.
- 1:41:59All right, Bill, we've got a new defensive lineup for the New York game.
- 1:42:03We've got a new shortstop. When Elliott Jim Mason comes on to play shortstop, is George Foster steps in for the reds.
- 1:42:09Reds lead three to one, bottom of the seventh.
- 1:42:12Line, faced in left field by Foster. Foster jumping on a curve ball and looking at the left.
- 1:42:17White foul was a ball. Foster started to go to second base, but changed his mind.
- 1:42:22Unfortunately for Foster, because White threw a strike at the second base.
- 1:42:26So George Foster, a leadoff single here in the seventh, he's not two for two.
- 1:42:30Of course, his first baseman was a routine ground ball to third base that Perez, Tony Perez, ran into.
- 1:42:36And technically, Foster got a base hit. And once again, the Yankee bullpen gets busy.
- 1:42:41It's Tidrow and Lyle. Tidrow, the right-hander, Sparky Lyle, the left-hander.
- 1:42:47Here's Johnny Bench, who's one for two, a single to center.
- 1:42:52Bench to bench. Back ball is low.
- 1:42:57Reds now have three runs on eight base hits. The Yankees one run on four.
- 1:43:06Bottom half of seventh inning.
- 1:43:10Here's the one out of bench. Swung on line, deep to right field.
- 1:43:14The ball is up against the wall.
- 1:43:17Bounces back in just past Maddox.
- 1:43:19Around first base is Foster. He's going to score.
- 1:43:22And Bench takes it to third base with a dribble.
- 1:43:25And the Reds lead it four to one.
- 1:43:29Johnny Bench going to the opposite field.
- 1:43:31Looks like that ball was going to be out of here.
- 1:43:33Hit high off the wall and bounced back past Maddox.
- 1:43:36And by the time Maddox got the ball back in, Foster had scored from first base.
- 1:43:41And Bench is over third with an RBI triple.
- 1:43:44And Billy Martin now walking out to the mound.
- 1:43:46And that might be all for Doyle Alexander.
- 1:43:49Martin wants the left-hander, Sparky Lyle.
- 1:43:52Well, Bill, you called it.
- 1:43:54You said that it would be the sixth inning.
- 1:43:56The pace or the berth might begin to show on a pitcher Doyle Alexander.
- 1:44:02You're about an out-lake. But here we are.
- 1:44:05Well, that's only because I think the hitters finally get to the point
- 1:44:09where they realize that Alexander will not throw the fastball by them.
- 1:44:13So the news from Riverfront Stadium here in Cincinnati is 4-1, a change in pictures.
- 1:44:19So let's take a brief update from CBS News in New York.
- 1:44:23CBS News. I'm Steve Young reporting on the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:44:27President Ford and Jimmy Carter exchanged telegrams today.
- 1:44:30Carter charged Mr. Ford with making misleading and erroneous statements
- 1:44:34regarding the Democrats' stands on taxes and federal spending.
- 1:44:38Responding to that telegram, Mr. Ford said he was delighted to help Carter clarify his stands on the issues,
- 1:44:44and he continued to say Carter waffles and wobbles on tax, spending, and other issues.
- 1:44:49The warring factions in Lebanon seem to have taken the day off.
- 1:44:52It's reported quiet there today.
- 1:44:54Syria's president has ordered his troops to stop fighting.
- 1:44:57That move came as Arab and Palestinian leaders gathered in Saudi Arabia
- 1:45:01for summit talks on the Lebanese war.
- 1:45:04The British-sponsored conference on Rhodesia that was to have opened in Geneva October 25th
- 1:45:09has been postponed for three days to accommodate the black African leaders
- 1:45:13who wanted more time to prepare for the meeting.
- 1:45:16Steve Young, CBS News, New York.
- 1:45:20Back at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati where Sparky Lyle is finishing his warm-ups
- 1:45:24as he has just replaced Doyle Alexander in the bottom of the seventh inning
- 1:45:29as the Reds have now gone 4-1 in the lead as a result of Johnny Bench's screening line drive
- 1:45:35down the right field line.
- 1:45:38It just hit the wall maybe four or five feet below the top,
- 1:45:42and I'm told by local observers that back in 1972,
- 1:45:47the historic home run that Johnny hit that defeated the Fifth-Bird Pirates
- 1:45:50or at least tied up the game at that point, went to the same spot, just that much higher, and into the stands.
- 1:45:56So the Reds threatening with Bench on third and Cesar Geronimo at the plate, Bill White.
- 1:46:02All right, what? Sparky Lyle coming on in relief of Doyle Alexander here in the bottom of the seventh
- 1:46:09with the Reds leading 4-1, Johnny Bench in third base.
- 1:46:12Nobody out, Yankees bring their infield in.
- 1:46:15Geronimo is over two, left-handed batter.
- 1:46:18First pitch to him is Wong-Hunter Ness.
- 1:46:20Lyle getting that slider down and away.
- 1:46:24Sparky had another excellent year for the Yankees.
- 1:46:26He picked up 23 saves and seven wins in 1976.
- 1:46:31Here's the 0-1 to Geronimo, outside blocked by Hudson now.
- 1:46:35He can't find it and Bitt will score.
- 1:46:38Reds now lead 5-1, and we'll see if that's a wild pitch or a fast ball.
- 1:46:47Wild pitch, wild pitch charged to Sparky Lyle. Reds now lead 5-1.
- 1:46:56And a count on Geronimo with the ball on the strike.
- 1:46:58That ball was to the left of Munchen.
- 1:47:00He got that ball down there, blocked it, and it kicked back to his right.
- 1:47:04He couldn't find the ball, and Bench alertly scored from third base.
- 1:47:08The 1-1, swung on line left there, and that's going to be a base that might blow the wall.
- 1:47:13He's got to rock it off, and he does, but a round first base and digging in to second is Desire Geronimo.
- 1:47:18And the Reds have come alive. Here's the bottom half to 7-8.
- 1:47:25Yep. The world champions are playing like it's now.
- 1:47:31The game has been even up until this inning, 3-1, and one swipe at the bat by one of the Yankee power hitters could have brought it back in focus.
- 1:47:41But with the first three batters, the game has completely changed to Cincinnati now.
- 1:47:46That's tripled by Bench off the right field wall after the single.
- 1:47:51By Foster followed by this double has now changed the entire complexion of the game.
- 1:47:56Now here's David Contefion, and he takes high from Lyle.
- 1:48:01Whether it's the lively ball or the lively field, up to 10 hits made for the Reds so far, 5 have been for extra bases, Bill.
- 1:48:09Lyle sets again. Here's the 1-0. Contefion fouls it straight back into ball and the strike.
- 1:48:15Desire Geronimo down at second base. There's nobody out here in the seventh inning. The Reds lead 5-1.
- 1:48:23Now that finishes up by Alexander's record.
- 1:48:28The 1-1 has punted out and missed. 1-2.
- 1:48:32Alexander went 6-plus, pitched to two runner batters here in the seventh, gave up 5 runs on 9 base hits.
- 1:48:40He struck out 1 and walked 2.
- 1:48:45Brad Jackson and Nick Tidrell loosening up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:48:55Geronimo offset.
- 1:48:58Here's the 1-2 to Contefion. Swung on and missed.
- 1:49:02It's a big, breaking curve ball, and there's one away.
- 1:49:06So Contefion strikes out. Geronimo till at second.
- 1:49:11And the hand is for Pete Rose.
- 1:49:17Rose is 0-1 on the ball game, although he's been up three times.
- 1:49:20He fly into center field to lead the ball game off in the first.
- 1:49:23He drove in a run, the Reds' second run of the ball game with a sacrifice fly to center in the third, and he walked in the sixth.
- 1:49:33This is the first time we've seen him as a right-hander in this game, facing a left-handed Lyle.
- 1:49:39Yankees play roller straight away.
- 1:49:42Lyle sets, checks the runner, and deals.
- 1:49:45Bounce towards shortstop, who is left to Mason.
- 1:49:48The left-hander to shortstop goes on the first base of God Rose, and on the play Geronimo goes to third.
- 1:49:56So with two outs of batter will be Ken Griffey, the right fielder.
- 1:49:59Griffey so far is 0-3.
- 1:50:02Lined to left pop to the third base from Greg Nettles and forced to runner at second base in the sixth.
- 1:50:08Then he stole a base and scored on a single by Tony Perez.
- 1:50:14They have five runs on ten hits, the Yankees one run on four.
- 1:50:18Playing the bottom half to seven.
- 1:50:22Lyle sets, and the pitch.
- 1:50:25Griffey takes low and away. Good stop there by Mason.
- 1:50:28He saved a wild pitch.
- 1:50:30Wild basically is a slider pitcher.
- 1:50:32He keeps that slider down and away from left-handers.
- 1:50:34Every once in a while he'll try to hit them on the pitch with a fast ball.
- 1:50:37Here's a 1-0. Swung on a miss.
- 1:50:40One ball, one strike on Griffey.
- 1:50:44Griffey almost won the National League batting title.
- 1:50:48Yeah. That last day when he sat it out until he discovered that Madlock was killing the ball,
- 1:50:53and then he came off the bench for two times at bat and struck out both times.
- 1:50:57Now the set by Lyle. Here's a 1-1 pitch.
- 1:51:00Swung on, bounce foul.
- 1:51:03And at the photographer's section, just to the left of the Cincinnati Reds, got on the first base side.
- 1:51:09A ball and two strikes on Griffey.
- 1:51:11Bill, I don't necessarily mean to pertain to Griffey's performance,
- 1:51:14but it's been my experience in any sport at any time.
- 1:51:17You can't press buttons. I don't care how good you are.
- 1:51:20Unless you're out there to give all the time, you can't sit back and say,
- 1:51:24well, I'll do it when I want to.
- 1:51:26When you do it when you want to, you're found more wanting than wanting.
- 1:51:30You're saying it's hard to turn it on and off.
- 1:51:32It sure is.
- 1:51:34Here's a 1-2 to Griffey.
- 1:51:36Swaved at a wide breaking slider.
- 1:51:39But the Reds score twice.
- 1:51:41On three bases to leave a man on base.
- 1:51:44And at the end of seven, the Reds five, the Yankees one.
- 1:51:48Until now, a do-it-yourselfer needed a vice to hold his work,
- 1:51:52a workbench to hold a vice,
- 1:51:54and a space to fit the workbench.
- 1:51:56Hi, Pat Summer. I'll tell you the True Value Hardware Store is going to help you change all that.
- 1:52:01With the Black & Decker WorkMate,
- 1:52:03it's a portable all-purpose workbench, vice, and bore.
- 1:52:06It adjusts to hold wedge-shaped objects, pipe, even the irregular,
- 1:52:10and bulky items like bicycles for repair.
- 1:52:12Yet it weighs just 32 pounds and folds to the size of a collapsed lawn chair,
- 1:52:17so you can take the workbench to the work.
- 1:52:19See the WorkMate portable all-purpose workbench at True Value Hardware Stores.
- 1:52:24And while you're there, check out their selection of Black & Decker power tools,
- 1:52:27like the 3-8 inch power drill.
- 1:52:30It drills through 3-8 inch steel or 3-4 inch hardwood.
- 1:52:34It's double insulated for electrical safety, and it's just 9.88.
- 1:52:38Black & Decker tools are just some of the values that participate in True Value Hardware Stores.
- 1:52:43True Value, it's more than just a name. It's their way of doing business.
- 1:52:50Let's pause ten seconds for station identification on this, the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:52:55This is WBBM Chicago, News Radio 78.
- 1:52:58It's one minute past 2 o'clock in the afternoon, 47 degrees, wind northwest, 10 miles an hour.
- 1:53:06Here we are back on the banks of the Ohio.
- 1:53:08Can't say the side of the Ohio.
- 1:53:10The banks of the Ohio, the Riverfront Stadium, the home of the Cincinnati Reds,
- 1:53:15and right now the home of the free and the happy Cincinnati fans,
- 1:53:19who've seen their clubs put together 10 hits, 5 runs, and committed one error.
- 1:53:23The Yanks, threatening occasionally, have only got four hits off Don Gullit in one run.
- 1:53:28As we go into the top of the eighth inning, that's the story.
- 1:53:325-1, Cincinnati Reds, and mix it quick up there, Bill.
- 1:53:36And Mark Anderson taking no chances.
- 1:53:40He's got a couple of guys warming up as Gullit deals high to Rivers.
- 1:53:44They go for Bone and Will McEnany, a left-hander and a right-hander.
- 1:53:47For Bone, the right-hander, and McEnany, the left-hander.
- 1:53:51Rivers so far is over three against Gullit.
- 1:53:53Passball popped up behind the plate.
- 1:53:56Johnny Bench throws the mask away.
- 1:53:58He's got a robe, and he's got it.
- 1:54:00Boy, he makes things look easy when Elliott.
- 1:54:03That's Johnny Bench.
- 1:54:05Yeah, like we said before, when it comes to catchers,
- 1:54:08we've got four of them down there that are the golden arms, I suppose.
- 1:54:13And looking right down at a bench's face as he was assessing the pop-flies,
- 1:54:18he was absolutely serene and confident. There was no question.
- 1:54:21No way he was going to miss that ball.
- 1:54:23He had a magnet in the glove.
- 1:54:25Oh, there's one out, nobody on. Eighth inning, here's Roy White.
- 1:54:28He was bounced out, lined out, and got on on an error by centerfielders.
- 1:54:32These aren't Geronimo, so White's over three.
- 1:54:34Reds lead 5-1, eighth inning.
- 1:54:38On deck is Thurman.
- 1:54:43Here's Gullit's first pitch to White.
- 1:54:45Swung on line, base in left field.
- 1:54:47Backing up and getting it on a couple of hops is Foster.
- 1:54:50He gets it back, and then White will hold it first.
- 1:54:55Boy, the fifth base hit in this ballgame for the Yankees.
- 1:54:57White on it first, one out, and the batter third of much.
- 1:54:59Bill, on the previous pitch, Don Gullit stumbled on the mound.
- 1:55:03I was going to say, had there been a man on base, that would have been a balk.
- 1:55:07He has now bent over, and he may have pulled a muscle in the groin
- 1:55:11as he had done in the first game, or maybe even Sparky Anderson is out there.
- 1:55:16The trainer is out there. It looks like it's in his right ankle or foot.
- 1:55:20And right away, Anderson Beckins. He wants the right-hander, Pedro Borbón.
- 1:55:25So Borbón will come on, and of course, he'll get as much time as he needs
- 1:55:29because Gullit's being taken off because of an injury.
- 1:55:33It seemed inconsequential at the time when Don stumbled on the previous delivery,
- 1:55:40but obviously he turned his ankle. He turned that right ankle,
- 1:55:47and the crowd pumped to its feet here at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati
- 1:55:51to salute Don Gullit as he leaves the game after having faced the one batter
- 1:55:57or the two batters in the eighth inning, giving up a single to Roy White.
- 1:56:03And as I have it, that was the fifth hit of the eight and one third innings
- 1:56:07that he has pitched, and he's allowed to single run the seven and one third innings.
- 1:56:14And now Pedro Borbón, who has been the backbone of the Cincinnati Red Relief Corps
- 1:56:20for a couple of years with the trading of Clay Carroll.
- 1:56:24It was Carroll and Borbón who used to carry. Then the kids came, McEnany and Eastwick.
- 1:56:29I have a theory about this Cincinnati Red Club.
- 1:56:34They've been at the Big Red Machine since 1970, but in all that time they have only won the pennant,
- 1:56:39that is the World Series and the championship last year.
- 1:56:43They were bested by the Orioles. They were defeated by Oakland.
- 1:56:47But it was with the appearance of the two fuzzy-cheeked kids last year,
- 1:56:51Eastwick and McEnany, who had fabulous years coming in from either side of the plate,
- 1:56:57that relieved pitchers that this club, I won't say matured,
- 1:57:01but it gave them just the thing they needed.
- 1:57:04Well, it's impossible for Sparky Anderson to change his name to Captain Hook.
- 1:57:07He can't be Captain Hook unless you've got somebody to follow up the hook.
- 1:57:11And it was those two kids who did it.
- 1:57:13Just a theory of mind, Bill, just like on your club, the Yankees.
- 1:57:17They're great pennant-winning champions. They've always had great relief pitchers.
- 1:57:21Going back to Will Seymour and Joe Faith, Johnny Murphy, it doesn't happen unless you've got that stuff.
- 1:57:28And this club is worth the Sparky loud, Dick Tidrow, Grant Jackson.
- 1:57:32Well, four-point is ready, and he pitches to Bunsen, and it's up and in the ball.
- 1:57:38So Gullard went seven in the third, gave up one run on five, hit struck out four, walked three.
- 1:57:44Of course, White's responsibility, Perez playing behind White at first base,
- 1:57:48one out here in the top of the eighth.
- 1:57:51Pop file, that's back over our head, hits the ball to strike on Muzzin.
- 1:58:01If Lefty Gomez is listening out here in San Francisco, mentioning Johnny Murphy must make his left arm tingle.
- 1:58:09Now four-point, sets the deal.
- 1:58:11Best ball, bounce slowly toward third. Over there's a picture, four-point, throws on the first base, off balance, they've got Muzzin.
- 1:58:17And moving into second base is Roy White.
- 1:58:21Oh, they're two out to put out one-three. Good play by both.
- 1:58:25And we're going to get a pitch for Lou Pennella.
- 1:58:31Carlos May is going to bat for Lou Pennella.
- 1:58:34Billy Martin going for a left-hander here against a right-handed pitcher.
- 1:58:43Now Raleigh Eastwick gets up, along with Will McEnna, he's with the right-hander.
- 1:58:48Bill, that was a big out for a four-ball.
- 1:58:51That Muzzin, as he goes, this club has been going.
- 1:58:54Carlos May takes the strike.
- 1:58:57Reds have a five-to-one lead.
- 1:59:00Playing the top of the eighth, they're two outs, White is down at second base.
- 1:59:04The next pitch, line right field, but right there's Murphy going back now, and he's got it on the run.
- 1:59:10Murphy started in, then had to go back and made the catch on the run for the third out.
- 1:59:14So the Yankees, though, run to base it, and the White was left at second base.
- 1:59:19We're going to the bottom of the eighth, the red spot, the Yankees, one.
- 1:59:23When you've decided to buy a microwave oven, wouldn't it be nice if there was an easy way to be sure you're getting the right one?
- 1:59:29There is. Just go to your Amana retailer and see a demonstration of the fabulous Amana Touchmatic Radar Range, the first microwave oven with a memory.
- 1:59:38The Amana Touchmatic Radar Range can take foods from the freezer to the table, simple as one, two, three.
- 1:59:43Because Amana's Touchmatic Radar Range remembers how long to defrost, then remembers exactly how long to cook.
- 1:59:50And after it calls you for dinner, the timer even remembers and displays the time of day.
- 1:59:55And just look at these other performance and convenience features.
- 1:59:58Stainless steel interior, big enough for a family-sized turkey.
- 2:00:01Cookmatic Power Shift lets you choose the cooking speed you need.
- 2:00:05175 watts of cooking power cooks almost everything in one-fourth the usual time, with 50 to 75 percent less energy than a conventional electric range.
- 2:00:14That's energy saving.
- 2:00:16The Amana Touchmatic Radar Range.
- 2:00:18Once you see it in action, you'll know it's the one for you.
- 2:00:24Three, one.
- 2:00:25We're back at Riverfront Stadium where we're approaching the last half of the eighth inning with the home team Cincinnati Red, seemingly in command of the game five to one.
- 2:00:34Spocky Lyle now in relief of the starter Doyle Alexander and Pedro Borbón who came in to stop out a yanky chance last inning as Don Gullis seemingly turned his ankle after pitching to one batter and had to be removed.
- 2:00:49Yank might have had a chance with their big hitter Munson without the pitcher to the first and then a fly ball to right field.
- 2:00:57And right now it looks like the champions are in command.
- 2:01:02Bill?
- 2:01:03All right, when did Joe Morgan, the fellow who's helped the champions, short getting in command, he homered in the first.
- 2:01:11And he takes outside from Lyle.
- 2:01:13Morgan also flies the center left center to white before and struck out in the sixth.
- 2:01:20First time he's faced Spocky Lyle.
- 2:01:22Line, Willie Randolph leaps to second base, he makes the catch.
- 2:01:26Morgan went down and got a little fastball lined to the second base with Willie Randolph and there's one away.
- 2:01:33And the hand is for Tony Perez.
- 2:01:37Perez is three for three in this ball game this afternoon with a run batted in.
- 2:01:41He's got two singles and a double.
- 2:01:44Yanky, flame straight away.
- 2:01:46Tony Perez, three for three.
- 2:01:48On the air he batted just two sixties.
- 2:01:50Nineteen home runs, ninety-one runs batted in.
- 2:01:52And he takes a strike on the outside corner.
- 2:01:57And to get those ninety-one RBIs he drove in three runs the last day of the season.
- 2:02:03Sliders inside, it's one and one.
- 2:02:08It's hard for Perez to get much recognition.
- 2:02:10He sits around Morgan, Rose, Bench, Twings and he doesn't get a slider.
- 2:02:16A ball and two strikes.
- 2:02:17In fact, there was some question as to whether he had sufficient recognition with the Reds front office a couple of years ago.
- 2:02:23There was a lot of talk about Tony being on the block, whether that was true or not.
- 2:02:28Of course, that's brought him on to a good season next year.
- 2:02:31The one-two is pop-file out of play right side, counter-mains.
- 2:02:35A ball and two strikes on Perez.
- 2:02:38On deck is Dandridge.
- 2:02:40That's knowing your personality then, Bill.
- 2:02:42I mean, not yours, but some people do better when they know their love.
- 2:02:45Some people do a little better when they know they're under pressure.
- 2:02:48I like to be under a little pressure.
- 2:02:49Really?
- 2:02:50Yes.
- 2:02:51Did your managers know that?
- 2:02:52Well, they loved it.
- 2:02:55The one-two is foul straight back.
- 2:03:00I put the pressure on myself, Wes.
- 2:03:01I've got that.
- 2:03:02Well, that's the best kind to be self-motivated.
- 2:03:05It doesn't make any difference what business you're in.
- 2:03:08Lyle gets a new ball.
- 2:03:09He works quickly.
- 2:03:10The one-two fixer Perez is hung on.
- 2:03:13Let's then scoop that ball up and tag Perez, and they're two outs.
- 2:03:17Lyle has come on and struck out three.
- 2:03:21Oh, they're two outs.
- 2:03:23Nobody on for the Reds and the A's.
- 2:03:25Then in the batter, Dandridge is the designated hitter.
- 2:03:28He's flied to center field, flied to left field, and fouled out.
- 2:03:31Over three.
- 2:03:34Dandridge will be the D.H. against right-handed pitchers.
- 2:03:38Bob Bailey, the D.H. against left-handed pitchers.
- 2:03:41As Dreesen takes the strike on the inside corner.
- 2:03:46Of course, the Reds lead it 5-1, so Anderson allowing Dreesen to bat against Lyle.
- 2:03:51Sliders won't admit it.
- 2:03:53No ball, two strikes.
- 2:03:55Does he consider that Dreesen is a better hitter downer than Bailey?
- 2:04:00More like Dries?
- 2:04:02Bounce to first base.
- 2:04:03Campbell's fouled the ball, and nobody's covering first.
- 2:04:07Lyle did not break off the mound.
- 2:04:09And when Campbell's fouled that ball, nobody was there to catch the throw.
- 2:04:15And we'll wait to see what the official score says.
- 2:04:19I would anticipate that it be two errors.
- 2:04:21One that will go on the books to Chambliss, and one will not go on the books to Lyle.
- 2:04:26Well, they give one, you're right, when they do give the physical error to Chris Chambliss.
- 2:04:31And of course, Lyle not being there, as Chambliss got that ball, looked for it, but there was nobody there.
- 2:04:37That's the Yankees first year of the ball game.
- 2:04:42And here's George Bostas, a left fielder, runner at first, two outs.
- 2:04:45Runner going!
- 2:04:46Popped up left side, white coming on, still coming, glasses down in left field, and he puts it away for out number three.
- 2:04:53No runs, no hits, near and a man left on base.
- 2:04:55And here's the base, here at Riverfront Stadium in Central Valley.
- 2:04:58The score, the Reds five, the Yankees one.

- 2:06:37I've been told that one of the hallmarks of the Cincinnati crowd was that they never left the stadium when their team was behind.
- 2:06:43Now Bill White is going to take the play.
- 2:06:45Bounce to first base, right there's Perez as Campbell's jumped on the first pitch and Perez,
- 2:06:50he's going to put the bag and there's one away. One pitch, one out here in the ninth inning. The Reds have a 5-1 lead and this crowd went Elliott.
- 2:06:57Not too many of them leaving as you mentioned. They're ahead but they're staying here.
- 2:07:01They want to see what the Reds are going to do. The Reds lead 5-1, one out, nobody on. Greg Nettles is back.
- 2:07:09Bill, that comes under the heading of how sweet it is.
- 2:07:12Yes, you want to stay and enjoy it as long as you can.
- 2:07:16Four-bone pitch to Nettles is down low.
- 2:07:21Nettles has given in a run with a sacrifice. Flies also bounced into a couple of double plays.
- 2:07:26Basketball line and backhanded by Perez at first base.
- 2:07:31Two outs, Tony Perez not only having a fine day with a bat but also with the leather.
- 2:07:38And they're two outs.
- 2:07:40Tony is twice left today by the Lord of Defense and the head man of offense.
- 2:07:48Here's Elliott Maddux and we're going to get Maddux called back and Oscar Gamble will bat for him.
- 2:07:54So Gamble batting for Maddux here with two outs and nobody on as Patriel Bormbone is just one out away.
- 2:08:02Putting the nail in the Yankee's sovereign here in the first game of the 1976 World Series.
- 2:08:07Gamble bats left handed and he takes high and away a ball.
- 2:08:19And the 1-0 to Gamble. Swung on and foul straight back and that got Lee Weier the whole plate on fire on his right arm.
- 2:08:28And it's one and one.
- 2:08:30Well when this game is over you'll hear some kind of roar from the Cincinnati Reds fans.
- 2:08:42Here's the 1-1 to Gamble. Ball is high, didn't break, hits two and one.
- 2:08:46Understand that Anderson used to take Tony Perez out for Danny Driesen.
- 2:08:51Late in ball games for defensive reasons.
- 2:08:54Well Perez is doing his job with the leather today.
- 2:08:56Popped up left side foul territory, Pete Rose over there in the Yankee dugout and the ball game is over.
- 2:09:03Oscar Gamble following up to Pete Rose. Yankees go three down to the ninth.
- 2:09:08Final score, the Cincinnati Reds win the first game of the World Series here in 1976.
- 2:09:15It's a red five, the Yankees won.

- 2:10:22Well, the Cincinnati Reds before their hometown crowd here in Riverfront Stadium got off wing and they won the opening game of the World Series 5-1.
- 2:10:30And in the very first inning, the ubiquitous Joe Morgan with one swing at the bat put it into the right field stance.
- 2:10:37And that was as many runs as the New York Yankees could get in.
- 2:10:40Nine full tries at the bat against the combined efforts of Don Gullit and his reliever Pedro Borbon.
- 2:10:46Gullit went seven in the third inning, seemingly twisted his left ankle, gave up the five hits in the only run.
- 2:10:52The Yankees could do nothing with the relief try of Borbon.
- 2:10:57And that was the story. The Reds didn't overpower the Yankees.
- 2:11:02The Yankees didn't give them that much.
- 2:11:05It was just an inexorable kind of thing. The champions got the edge and they maintained it.
- 2:11:10The Yankees got a run back in the second inning as you recall, Bill, when Panella doubled down the right field line on a long fly in the center field, put them back in the ball game and made it even.
- 2:11:21And the Reds went out front in the third inning. You remember how that happened?
- 2:11:26Along the third with one out, Davy Concepcion doubled in the left center field and tripled in the left center field. That ball got past the White and Rivers in the sacrifice fly by P. Rose.
- 2:11:38Drove in Davy Concepcion.
- 2:11:41As you mentioned, when Elliott was all red, you know, we sit up here and we talk, but they do a lot of little things, a lot of little things that make them the ball club they are.
- 2:11:51If they don't hit, they can still get on base. They can steal a run here and there as we saw them do it.
- 2:11:56They're just a good ball club. Yankee ball club, also a good ball club. But I think the Yankees are going to have to get runs.
- 2:12:03I don't think they can depend on winning a ball game one to nothing with the Cincinnati Reds ball club. They're going to have to score runs.
- 2:12:08Yeah, I don't think you can count on beating them one to nothing. You really have to beat them. We'll be back to Riverfront Stadium in just one minute.
