- 0:01Hello and welcome to the Christian Business Growth Podcast.
- 0:03I'm here with Kathy Zant.
- 0:05She's gonna tell you more about that in a minute.
- 0:07Kathy, how did God get you into business?
- 0:10God got me into business.
- 0:12God's been waiting for me to make a decision.
- 0:16It was almost like all these like little signs were kind of dropped around the way and I made a decision one weekend and I was just kind of thrust into, all right, let's do it.
- 0:27Let's do this thing.
- 0:29Let's really get clear on who I am, how I serve and how I can help people just.
- 0:35find empowerment and there's like so many different ways to empower someone, you know, I mean, you can empower them in just a conversation through education, all of that.
- 0:46And I had a really interesting conversation about a month or so ago that just kind of integrated me and my husband was the coach and I kind of lived vicariously through him.
- 0:56I loved his stories of, you know, being on the golf course with a professional golfer and then he'd come home and like, well,
- 1:04did you get fixed their game?
- 1:05And he's like, I was fighting with his wife.
- 1:07It was showing up in his game.
- 1:08So we fixed that, you know, was so I loved those kinds of empowerment stories that kind of brought people back to back to the core of love and who they are.
- 1:17And um he had a stroke four years ago.
- 1:20And so I've kind of been missing that aspect.
- 1:22And so I've been looking at coaching, got NLP certified next year, but I had a conversation last month and it was like, yeah, but you have like
- 1:32all of this stuff and it all works together.
- 1:34Don't like leave the 20 years of experience and security behind, bring it, you know, that's good stuff.
- 1:40And so now I'm kind of blending all of these things together and really focusing on who God wants me to serve, which is small businesses, people who are living close to their
- 1:52heart, aren't locked into the corporate cog machinery.
- 1:55I'm really motivated to serve those people.
- 1:58and bring them closer to who they are so that they can live their path and help them find good decision-making around security and all of these things, especially in the age of AI,
- 2:10it's just kind of, it's so important and things are changing all of the time, but principles are still the same.
- 2:16So that's kind of how God has brought me to this point.
- 2:20So yeah, you're talking about security.
- 2:21So what are a couple of those principles you might talk about?
- 2:24Yeah, well, there's um the basic principles of keeping what is supposed to be confidential, confidential, um maintaining the integrity of systems, and making sure that
- 2:36the things that need to be accessible to the people who need to have it are accessible.
- 2:41And so there's this triad called CIA, but it's in security.
- 2:46It's not the three-letter agency.
- 2:48It's confidentiality, integrity, and uh
- 2:53and accessibility to have all of those together and making sure that your business is operating the way it should and that prying eyes aren't getting at information that they
- 3:03shouldn't have.
- 3:04Yeah, it's really hard because today with AI, all your chats, some of those chats are becoming public information and data is being sourced from that information of your chats
- 3:13and everything.
- 3:13Do you deal with that a lot in your business?
- 3:16um Well, most of the stuff that I do personally is more public facing, but I have a few people that I consult with and it's just so easy to take a confidential conversation
- 3:28transcript and you have like Fathom or some AI tool that's taking notes for you.
- 3:35And so all of the information is in that system and then they pull that out and it's like not perfect.
- 3:40And so then they put it into ChatGPT or an AI tool to clean it up.
- 3:43And so now it's over there.
- 3:45And then they put it on a Google Drive or a Dropbox and now it's over there.
- 3:50And so now you have this very confidential, sensitive client information exposed.
- 3:56It increases the attack surface, so to speak, because all of this information is in multiple places.
- 4:03And most smaller businesses don't think about security in the same way that larger businesses do.
- 4:09Because big businesses, have security teams that enforce
- 4:14governance over how documents are being stored and where things go.
- 4:20so smaller businesses don't have that.
- 4:22And so it's just easy.
- 4:23Well, people are focused on serving their clients.
- 4:26They're focused on, let's get you to your goal.
- 4:29Let's get your problem solved.
- 4:31And they don't think about all of the decisions that they're making in the operation of their business and how it could negatively impact those clients if that information was
- 4:39ever exposed.
- 4:40So.
- 4:41uh Those types of internal decisions are very important.
- 4:45And then there's all of this new stuff that's coming with like AI skills.
- 4:50And I've already seen some of the bleeding edge of AI usage where these skills actually have malicious prompts in them and people just like, well, the skill is going to inform my
- 5:03AI and how to do this thing.
- 5:05And so they just download it, put it into their AI tool.
- 5:08And all of a sudden they have an info stealer.
- 5:11you know, that is exposing their information.
- 5:13So there's all of this new stuff that's coming that smaller businesses might not be using right now, but people on the bleeding edge are.
- 5:21And so those cautionary tales that are happening right now that lots of smaller businesses need to be aware of.
- 5:29So I'm very, uh very interested in empowering people and understanding what's coming so that they can prepare for it and establish good policies and procedures.
- 5:38Yeah, that's some interesting information because AI is adding a whole new realm of things and you put on that audios and videos and images and you add the text.
- 5:48Like you said, the note recorders, people are wearing them around their neck everywhere they go, they take it with them.
- 5:53Some people's watches are automatically taking notes from things and if you don't turn it off, they're recording everything.
- 5:58So it's not being paranoid necessarily, but it's being aware of what's happening around you and everything.
- 6:04that's a key is the awareness factor.
- 6:06Right.
- 6:07And you know, for like a just like a coffee chat type of conversation, it's probably not that big of a deal.
- 6:12But if you're in like a client session and somebody is like sharing something that has gone on in their business that's super sensitive or something that they're personally
- 6:23dealing with, that's that's very they have a lot of fear around and they they're going through something, right?
- 6:29They don't want that exposed to the Internet or exposed to any in any way that could be, you know,
- 6:36negative repercussions for them.
- 6:38So it's just being sensitive to the types of data and how you're handling it.
- 6:45Good information, thank you for that.
- 6:47So tell me, what is God currently doing in your business right now?
- 6:51working through my, working through me, challenging me to like really step into what I'm supposed to be doing.
- 7:01I mean, it's stuff that I kind of do on my own anyway.
- 7:04I mean, I the whole week on, not this past weekend, but the weekend before just like going down these rabbit holes of just, wow, they're doing this and look at this.
- 7:13And I love spelunking, so to speak, into the security world and learning things and seeing what's happening.
- 7:21So I do all of this and, and God is asking me to claim that really claim, you know, I don't have to be the number one, well, you know, like the, guy who's in charge of CISA for
- 7:34the government, he uploaded sensitive government documents to chat GPT, even though he like broke all of the rules in the government.
- 7:40so it's like, there's all of this, there's this, um, just, there's almost this ego-based competitiveness in the tech space.
- 7:48And it's very.
- 7:50very masculine and very um competitive of how things have been.
- 7:57And so I've dealt with a lot of that over 20 years in tech.
- 8:01I thought maybe what, cause I took kind of a break from it and then I went back and I'm like, it's probably better by now.
- 8:06it's not, it's still very ego-based and I need to just claim that I.
- 8:13I know who I am and I know what I'm doing.
- 8:15So God is kind of working on me first as I get my business going and start really working with more people rather than just like friends and family.
- 8:25uh And pushing me to do a lot more YouTube because for some reason I could do YouTube very well.
- 8:30So I put out videos and they seem to perform better than I expect them to.
- 8:35So God's just showing me the way.
- 8:38That's awesome.
- 8:39He's just opening those doors step by step and you're walking through them as he opens them.
- 8:42That's great.
- 8:43I love that he's using your personality and your skillset, the things you're already interested in and building a business from that.
- 8:49That to me is a unique thing.
- 8:51Yeah, yeah, I mean, my core skill, I think, is to take complex and scary, sometimes to some people, security and technical topics and being make, helping people understand them.
- 9:05I was working for a major airline in the 1990s, very young and very, but I understood how the internet worked.
- 9:13And I was talking to like all of these higher ups at this major airline and I felt like just this dumb kid, but I was like,
- 9:19Well, think of it this way.
- 9:21And I just used all of these analogies and metaphors.
- 9:24And I finally, you could just see the eyes lighting up.
- 9:27They understood how the internet works at a time when I was like, you really need to start considering using email for customer support instead of phones.
- 9:35Like it was that early trying to steer this giant behemoth of an organization that was being disrupted by the internet and travel at that time.
- 9:43It was, it was just this monumental thing, but I could help these executives.
- 9:48understand complex topics and technical things that they just had no clue about, but understand it in a way that they could make better decisions.
- 9:57So that's my superpower.
- 9:59And so that's what I want to bring to smaller businesses.
- 10:02That's great.
- 10:02And I love that.
- 10:03That's, that's one of the things that drew me to ask you to come to this podcast.
- 10:05Cause the way you communicate is very clear and it's very simple.
- 10:08And I love that concept.
- 10:10Some people try to, they talk technology or they talk security.
- 10:13They try to talk in big words.
- 10:15They don't bring it down to the level of how does this impact my business directly?
- 10:18That's what I like about what you share.
- 10:20thank you.
- 10:21Thank you so much.
- 10:21Yeah, I think it might be a little bit.
- 10:25Even if you're not a very ego based person, just the technical world is so ego based and so tech bro, like that whole way of being affects everybody in tech.
- 10:38And so it's just something that you have to navigate.
- 10:41And it was never something that was like.
- 10:44It was just kind of like, okay, I just have to deal with all of that.
- 10:47And it kind of gave me a little bit of an imposter syndrome.
- 10:50But then I was like, wait a minute, no, they can't do this.
- 10:54They can't communicate to customers the way that I can, so they need me.
- 10:59There you go.
- 11:01That's great.
- 11:02So now we're going to shift direction.
- 11:03We're going to talk about business growth techniques.
- 11:05You already mentioned YouTube, so if you want to share about that, you feel free.
- 11:08Otherwise, what's a business growth tip that you have for somebody who's a Christian in business who wants to their business to make greater impact for the kingdom of God?
- 11:17Yeah, I'm going to lean into YouTube because it's the one thing that I sort of stumbled into figuring out.
- 11:25um I mean, I was doing YouTube for businesses.
- 11:29You know, we were doing live streams and events and all of this stuff for a couple of different companies I had worked at.
- 11:34And I was still working at one of them, but it was Christmas morning and I was making Christmas dinner and the last pass breach had happened and they had put out this letter
- 11:44and I'm like,
- 11:46think there's something more to this.
- 11:48And so as I'm making pie, I'm like coming over to the computer and researching it.
- 11:52And I'm like, I think the vaults, the password vaults were exposed and I kept going deeper.
- 11:58so I made a video on Christmas day and it didn't take me that long.
- 12:02It was the first video I had ever posted on my own personal YouTube channel.
- 12:07And because nobody else was talking about it, because everybody is at Christmas.
- 12:12And it didn't take me that long.
- 12:14It was a newsworthy item and it just blew up.
- 12:17It took off.
- 12:17And then I had to make a subsequent video.
- 12:20And then I got a brand deal and I'm like, who am I?
- 12:23I don't know what's happening here.
- 12:25But it was like taking something that was, that was, I was very early to, and I was able to be, you know, establish my expertise because it was something everybody was searching
- 12:35on something.
- 12:36My passwords were exposed.
- 12:38What do I need to do?
- 12:39And I helped people figure that out.
- 12:41Hear that?
- 12:42out a better password manager to move to.
- 12:44And I just was of service and I'm like doing all of this and I'm like, I don't really have a product to sell them, but it's like, it was something that just, knew people needed to
- 12:54know about it and I wanted to help people make sense of it and it just blew up.
- 12:59And that's YouTube.
- 13:01Now I've posted, I have a podcast and it doesn't happen over there because it's conversations and things like that.
- 13:07But in every niche, news events,
- 13:11happen.
- 13:12And to be able to take a news event and just, and sometimes I just like load up articles and walk through the article and help people make sense of what does this mean?
- 13:22What do I need to do about it?
- 13:24People need that.
- 13:25And so for any business, any Christian business, watch your niche, watch for news items and help people make sense of it because everybody's looking for that.
- 13:36You know, the news, we used to turn on the television and get the news.
- 13:40and have it all explained to us of what happened and what the impact to the community was.
- 13:45Well, now that's happening in much more siloed places with niches.
- 13:49So there's, there's events that happen in every single niche and taking those events, taking them and explaining this is what's going on and this is what it means.
- 13:59And this is what you can do.
- 14:01Like those, that's the formula for YouTube is people are looking for ways to make sense of their reality and
- 14:09and make better decisions and it establishes your authority, establishes your expertise and then everything else can hang off of that.
- 14:17Thank you for that.
- 14:18That's very good.
- 14:18And when you're collecting your sources, are you using like Google Alerts or Notebook LM or do you have another source?
- 14:25Yeah, I should use notebook.
- 14:27But mostly I just have like all my bookmarks and I just go check news sources to see what might be going on.
- 14:32And then I follow a lot of security.
- 14:35I have some subreddits that I follow and then I follow stuff.
- 14:39Twitter seems to understand, she likes security stuff.
- 14:43And so they sent me a bunch of ideas.
- 14:46And so I'll jump off from there and just go splunking.
- 14:50Yeah, I like the word spunky.
- 14:52oh But those of who are listening, you can set up an alert inside Google.
- 14:55It's called Google Alerts.
- 14:57And it alerts you about specific topics, specific niches.
- 15:00You don't want to go to just every news source.
- 15:02You want to find that specific news source that fits your identity and your brand niche, what it is you're talking about.
- 15:09And notebook LM is the next step where it uses AI and it'll pull information from specific sources.
- 15:15So again, you don't want to go to the main news sources.
- 15:18You want to find those that are specific to your industry or what it is you're talking about.
- 15:22That's a very interesting way of doing it.
- 15:24But I love that you're sharing the practicality of it.
- 15:26To me, that's the power behind it.
- 15:29What would you tell somebody who's new and they're like, I don't know if I want to be on camera on YouTube.
- 15:34That's scary.
- 15:35What would you tell somebody like that?
- 15:37You don't have to.
- 15:38That first video, I mean, I was making a pie and my hair was all up and I had, you know, I was a mess.
- 15:44So I just did a screen share of the articles and the sources that I could find.
- 15:49I didn't put my face on because I had seen some other channels do just like news reviews and stuff like that.
- 15:54And so I'm like, well, I'm just going to do it that way.
- 15:57So it was a very easy way to get started.
- 15:59And I'm still kind of using that formula.
- 16:02Now I'm a little more comfortable.
- 16:03I make myself prepared and you know, do my hair.
- 16:06And so I'll start with a quick little hook opener, then dive into the articles and then come back on screen to explain what it means.
- 16:14But you don't have to do that.
- 16:16don't have to do, just do your voice and walking through a screen share.
- 16:20And then I have like a little plugin for Chrome that where I can highlight things in the article so that the screen share will have certain things highlighted.
- 16:28It's super easy way to get started.
- 16:31That's great.
- 16:31And somebody who doesn't have a lot of technology knowledge, they can do something as simple zoom and just zoom and share the screen and keep it super simple.
- 16:37They have a free version even.
- 16:39So if somebody just getting started, that's super simple to do.
- 16:41You can use your camera most likely it's on your computer.
- 16:44It'll pick up audio good enough.
- 16:45Just speak loud and clear.
- 16:47That's the key.
- 16:48And make sure you have, you know where you're going.
- 16:50Cause some people ramble.
- 16:52If you get in the middle of rambling, you're not going to communicate well.
- 16:55So I suggest you may do it differently and you can share that minute.
- 16:58is get you a little outline.
- 16:59What is your hook?
- 17:00What is that question or theme statement at the beginning that's gonna communicate to people?
- 17:05And then what are your three, four, five, six points that you wanna cover in your video?
- 17:09Just kinda outline single sentences, words, whatever helps you understand that so you're not just getting in there rambling, because that's where people get the value of it.
- 17:16How do you organize yours?
- 17:19Yeah, I've done it in so many different ways and you have to do it the way that's comfortable to you and you have to give yourself time to experiment and find what is going
- 17:29to be comfortable.
- 17:30Make sure you have a good microphone as you mentioned because audio is so critically important and there's some good decent ones that you can get.
- 17:38And then I basically load up the articles.
- 17:41I have my formula and my way of doing it.
- 17:44I had people ask me, you use a teleprompter and I'm not.
- 17:47comfortable doing that, it makes me sound terrible.
- 17:50So I just give myself permission to make mistakes.
- 17:53And then I use Descript as an editing tool because it just gives you the transcript and you can just highlight the words you want to clip out.
- 18:02And I don't even try to do like super fancy edits.
- 18:05I just give myself permission to make mistakes.
- 18:07If I say something wrong, I'll stop myself and say it the way I want to say it.
- 18:12and just allow that to happen because then I can get into my flow and just trust that I can very easily edit after the fact.
- 18:20That's smart.
- 18:21Yeah.
- 18:21Yeah.
- 18:22Riverside does the same thing.
- 18:23I think the script has a free version.
- 18:25So does Riverside.
- 18:26And it's just another way to record something.
- 18:28And then you can literally just block out the sections you don't want and delete it.
- 18:32And it won't show up on the video.
- 18:33It's really a cool concept.
- 18:35We've come a long way when it comes to editing everything.
- 18:37And you don't have to do TikTok dances and put spatial things and make it all fancy.
- 18:42Cause you're, if you're speaking to the heart of the person, your ideal audience, you're going to communicate in a way that they want to hear.
- 18:50It's that simple.
- 18:51Do you agree with that?
- 18:53For sure, just be you because people, I know a lot of people are selling coaching and they don't wanna coach with somebody they don't know, they don't trust, that they don't have a
- 19:05connection with.
- 19:06So you have to put you out there and you have to allow yourself to just flow rather than trying to fix yourself into this like, this is how YouTube is or this is how, you know,
- 19:16this box, that's all imaginary and that's the delusion, you know?
- 19:20People want.
- 19:21what's real and a lot of the videos that are performing well from the research I've done are the ones that are more natural that don't have all of the edits that have the flubs
- 19:31and the imperfections because that's life.
- 19:35That's real.
- 19:36Yeah, long form content and people that are just real people, authenticity is beating all the algorithms right now.
- 19:42And AI is cracking down on all that AI stuff that's being put out there.
- 19:45And we're going to see a shift in that, think, this year personally.
- 19:48think we're going to see a huge shift to the authenticity of those people who are being real are going to start showing up more and more in front of people because people want
- 19:55reality, that people want that connection.
- 19:57Exactly.
- 19:58And there's just so much, it's not hard to do because you are one of one.
- 20:03Every person is one of one.
- 20:05God made you unique, gave you certain skills, gave you certain capabilities.
- 20:09And the more you just like own that and bring that to whatever content you're doing, it's gonna resonate at a higher signal versus noise because it's one of one.
- 20:21Thank you for sharing that.
- 20:23Tell us how we can get in touch with you and then leave us with one little tidbit of wisdom you want to, as we wrap up here.
- 20:28Yeah.
- 20:28Well, go watch my security content on YouTube.
- 20:31doing, I'm trying to do like one or two videos a week now.
- 20:34And zant.com is my personal site that has everything from my kids' picture.
- 20:40I've been blogging there for years.
- 20:42And so it's kind of in a little bit of a disarray right now, but I mean, everything's there.
- 20:48So you can sign on to my newsletter and segment yourself into what kind of content you want to get from me.
- 20:55If you want my podcast episodes or if you just want security content, you can decide.
- 20:59there's a way to do that there.
- 21:01And yeah.
- 21:03And then my last tidbit, I guess, is just the breakthrough that I've had is just being your one of oneself.
- 21:11That is, I think, that's your differentiator.
- 21:14That's where you're to find your success.
- 21:16That's where you're going to find your magic.
- 21:18your flow and everything else kind of solves itself after that.
- 21:23Thank you for that.
- 21:24Thank you for being with us.
- 21:27Glad to be here.
