- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Elon Musk
- 0:04Podcast. Now today's episode focuses on
- 0:07Spacex's bold plans for the year 2024, including an extraordinary
- 0:12goal of executing 144 launches. Additionally, we'll talk about
- 0:18Spacex's collaboration with T-Mobile to unveil the Starlink
- 0:21Direct to Cell service aimed to reshape cellular communications
- 0:26as we know them now in A top executive at SpaceX recently
- 0:30addressed the US Senate Subcommittee on Space and
- 0:33Science to outline these new plans.
- 0:35And the aim is to drastically increase the number of missions
- 0:39that SpaceX undertakes to lay the groundwork for their
- 0:42satellite to cell phone service. So first, SpaceX has set the
- 0:47aerospace community crazy recently with ambitious mission
- 0:52target for the year 2024. Bill Gerstenmeyer announced this
- 0:57objective in a recent hearing before the US Senate
- 1:00Subcommittee on Space and Science.
- 1:03If SpaceX achieves this goal, the number of launches would
- 1:06significantly outstrip the company's prior records.
- 1:09And as of this year, SpaceX is conducting launches at a
- 1:13frequency of approximately every 3.9 days.
- 1:16That's unheard of. That's an incredible amount of
- 1:20launches. Now, to reach the new goal of
- 1:22144 missions, that frequency would need to jump to a launch
- 1:26roughly every 2.5 days. And to manage this significant
- 1:31increase in workload, SpaceX is increasing its manufacturing
- 1:35capabilities in optimizing logistics and supply chain
- 1:39processes. SpaceX has previously
- 1:42demonstrated its ability to execute multiple launches within
- 1:45a short time frame. For example, the company has
- 1:48launched 2 Falcon 9 rockets within a single day.
- 1:51Achieving the 144 launch target before 2024 will require a
- 1:56sustained, relentless pace, achievable only through
- 2:00continuous innovation and a high degree of automation across the
- 2:04company's operations. And with this target, SpaceX
- 2:07aims to demonstrate that frequent and reliable space
- 2:09launches are possible and economically viable.
- 2:13And the object is not merely to show off technical prowess, but
- 2:16to advance the business case for space exploration and to make
- 2:20space travel as common as air travel.
- 2:23Now SpaceX is reimagining the way that we think about mobile
- 2:26services through its Starlink Direct to Cell technology.
- 2:30This is part of its new partnership with T-Mobile,
- 2:33aiming to turn Starlink satellites into what can
- 2:35essentially be described as cellular towers in orbit.
- 2:39And the service is set to roll out in stages, beginning with
- 2:42text messaging functionality in 2024.
- 2:45Full voice and data services are planned for a 2025 release, and
- 2:50these phases are structured to align with Spacex's launch
- 2:52capabilities, especially the anticipated introduction of the
- 2:56Starship rocket, which is crucial for deploying the
- 2:59largest satellites required for the service.
- 3:02An intermediate sized Starlink satellite will be compatible
- 3:05with Spacex's existing Falcon 9 rockets, which will be used for
- 3:09the initial phases of this new service.
- 3:12This is a strategic approach, allowing the company to start
- 3:15offering limited services without waiting for Starship to
- 3:18become operational. And by the time the complete
- 3:20service is offered, SpaceX plans to have a constellation of these
- 3:24advanced satellites in orbit. This constellation will not only
- 3:27improve connectivity options for people in remote areas, but also
- 3:31aims to redefine what we consider possible in terms of
- 3:34global telecommunications. Now SpaceX has ambitious plans
- 3:39to take its Starlink Direct to sell technology to an
- 3:42international audience as well. They've already signed
- 3:44agreements with telecommunications providers in
- 3:47several countries, Optimus or excuse me, Optus in Australia,
- 3:51Rogers in Canada and KEDDI in Japan among others.
- 3:56And the focus initially is to cover terrestrial areas.
- 3:59This strategy allows cellular providers to extend their
- 4:01coverage without having to build additional ground based
- 4:04infrastructure, saving both time and money.
- 4:07And the company's medium term goal is to fill in the
- 4:09connectivity gaps across the globe, particularly in rural and
- 4:13hard to reach areas like deserts and mountainous areas.
- 4:19Now SpaceX is also mindful of the regulatory aspects of the
- 4:22international expansion. The company is working closely
- 4:25with governments and regulatory bodies across the world to
- 4:29ensure that their services are in compliance with each
- 4:31country's telecommunications policies.
- 4:34And what makes this venture even more intriguing is the
- 4:36competitive advantage it could offer SpaceX over other
- 4:40satellite based Internet providers.
- 4:42Their aim is to build a comprehensive global network
- 4:45that can serve diverse needs, from individual mobile users to
- 4:48major corporations and even governmental agencies.
- 4:52Now SpaceX faces a variety of challenges with this both
- 4:55competitive and regulatory. Amazon's Project Kuiper is also
- 5:00working on high speed Internet connectivity through a network
- 5:03of satellites, raising the stakes in this emerging market.
- 5:06And in the US, the Federal Aviation Administration is
- 5:09playing a significant role in shaping the company's
- 5:12trajectory. The agency has laid out
- 5:14stringent criteria for SpaceX that they must meet,
- 5:17particularly concerning the safety and reliability of the
- 5:20Starship testing flights that are upcoming.
- 5:23And despite these hurdles, SpaceX continues to forge ahead,
- 5:26stressing the importance of frequent test flights to refine
- 5:29their technology and meet regulatory guidelines.
- 5:33They're in an ongoing dialogue with the FAA to ensure that
- 5:37their operations meet the highest safety standards and the
- 5:40regulatory landscape may present challenges, but it also provides
- 5:43opportunities. Meeting or exceeding regulatory
- 5:46requirements not only ensures the safety and reliability of
- 5:50Spacex's services, but also sets a precedent for the companies in
- 5:53the aerospace and telecommunication sectors to
