- 0:23This is Deep Dive into Joy, and I'm your host,
- 0:27Gina Rickner. Hey Joy listeners, it's your host
- 0:31Gina. Welcome to Deep Dive into Joy. Today's
- 0:35episode I'm going to talk about my cancer journey,
- 0:39kind of what it looked like, what I went through
- 0:41before everything happened and after, kind of
- 0:47like how I'm living now. But this first episode
- 0:50is going to look a little different. I would
- 0:52like to have guests on, which I will. So hopefully
- 0:59Probably next week, I will have someone on. Kind
- 1:02of just want to be about testimonies and stories
- 1:06or journeys, whatever you've been through. And
- 1:08we're just going to go and talk about it and,
- 1:11you know, share what we have to share with everyone.
- 1:15Just really how we find joy in everyday life,
- 1:17how God brings us joy in the midst of storms
- 1:20and just, you know, everything like that. Like
- 1:23I said, today's a little different. It's just
- 1:24myself and I will be talking about my journey.
- 1:27I am going to start every podcast asking, you
- 1:31know, what's your favorite drink? And since it's
- 1:33just me today, my favorite drink that I have
- 1:36with me is chamomile tea. I drink the FGO brand.
- 1:40It's organic. And I love to add local raw honey
- 1:44to it. So let's get started. Were you ever in
- 1:49the middle of a storm wondering why God didn't
- 1:51show up for you in the midst of your heart or
- 1:54heartbreak? I was in the middle of a storm really
- 1:58the last couple of years. I lost an aunt unexpectedly
- 2:02who was like a mom to me growing up. Then we
- 2:06were walking through an Alzheimer's disease with
- 2:08my gram and I had to sit by her bedside, you
- 2:12know, kind of just watching her suffer through
- 2:16that horrible disease and eventually being called
- 2:19home to the Lord. And shortly following that,
- 2:22which was last year, we lost my father -in -law
- 2:24unexpectedly. And then that summer we lost our
- 2:28Nan. But on top of already going through many
- 2:34stressors of raising an teenage daughter, a son,
- 2:39being a wife, you know, then came June of 2024.
- 2:47I... Had to sit in the doctor's office and hear
- 2:50the words. You have cancer. I was only 36 And
- 2:55I knew at that moment that my faith was surely
- 2:58being tested I Have since went through a long
- 3:03nodule removal and removal of two leg masses
- 3:07I Went through seven months of immunotherapy
- 3:10and 30 rounds of radiation every day Monday through
- 3:14Friday I just got finished with that last month.
- 3:21I really think you just go through all of that.
- 3:26I really think the radiation was probably the
- 3:28hardest just pain wise, but you know the struggles
- 3:34are real no matter what you're walking through.
- 3:37It doesn't have to be a cancer diagnosis. We
- 3:41run through life thinking we're immortal and
- 3:44tomorrow is promised. all the stressors and not
- 3:48actually taking the time to say yes to what God
- 3:50really wants us to say yes to. Not taking time
- 3:54to really slow down, listen to His voice, see
- 3:58His goodness and do His will. Maybe you ask yourself
- 4:03questions like, when is God going to right the
- 4:06wrongs? How will He bring me comfort to this
- 4:11situation? When will I get a break? How am I
- 4:15supposed to see His light in the darkness of
- 4:19this valley? Whatever your situation is right
- 4:23here right now, in your raw emotions and unanswered
- 4:27questions, I know it can be tempting to doubt
- 4:30God's goodness. When He allows trials and tribulations
- 4:35in our lives that don't feel good, seem good,
- 4:38or look good right now, it makes our faith quite
- 4:41weak. How are we to see the joy in such dark
- 4:46times? I remember with my journey, it was the
- 4:52start of summer and we were just getting ready
- 4:55to leave for vacation within the next couple
- 4:57of weeks. And all of that came to a halt in that
- 5:02doctor's office. I sat there crying, felt lost.
- 5:09I didn't know what to do, you know. Wrestling
- 5:13with God like haven't we been through enough
- 5:15already? The enemy instantly instilled me with
- 5:20fear Questioning God and why he would allow this
- 5:26our world was slipped upside down in the matter
- 5:29of seconds I Know you're asking Gina. How is
- 5:34this showing me to live in joy? Well, I get that
- 5:38It's important to know how and what brought me,
- 5:45you know, to be able to recognize joy and darkness.
- 5:50And that's really why I wanted to create this
- 5:52podcast. I told God and I leaned on the verse
- 5:57in Psalms 118 -17 that says, I will not die but
- 6:01live and declare the works of the Lord. And I
- 6:04told him that if he saved my life, that I could
- 6:10be here for my kids and my family. That I would
- 6:14do everything that I could To share my journey
- 6:18with others and try to help others as you know
- 6:20as much as I could and along the way And that's
- 6:23how this podcast was born So You know the enemy
- 6:33I feel like placed all that on me because I wasn't
- 6:36in God's Word every day I Didn't have God's Word
- 6:40to fight back And in John 10, 10 tells us the
- 6:46enemy, he comes to kill, steal and destroy. That's
- 6:50it. He roams this earth, like this earth is his
- 6:53domain to destroy our lives and relationships
- 6:56with God because he knows if he, you know, we
- 7:00let him in and he can get to us, then he can
- 7:03pull us away from God if we don't have the armor
- 7:06of God on. And that's exactly what Ephesians
- 7:096 tells us. It tells us to put on the full armor
- 7:12of God. That is his word that allows us to recognize
- 7:17when the enemy is trying to destroy us and how
- 7:21to fight back against that It gives us truth
- 7:25against the enemy's lies And that's exactly what
- 7:28the enemy is Devil Satan he is a liar When we
- 7:34face anxiety depression dark valleys when we
- 7:39feel run down We have God's Word to lift us up
- 7:44I'm gonna shout out my uncle Brian Just because
- 7:51he loves fun facts and he is like a dad to me
- 7:54and I love him so much But this is kind of my
- 7:57fun fact And I don't know if y 'all knew this
- 7:59but in the Bible it says do not fear 365 times
- 8:05I believe that was one for each day That was
- 8:09to remind us each day do not fear This also proves
- 8:15God only intended us to live one day at a time
- 8:20Did you ever hear not to worry about tomorrow
- 8:22for it has enough of its own? We were meant to
- 8:27live in faith and see the joy in the moment of
- 8:31today Not sitting in fear of tomorrow or being
- 8:36burden of our past Friends, Jesus already forgave
- 8:41your past. Pick yourself up and see the joy in
- 8:45just that. Your sins are erased. So as I went
- 8:52through my diagnosis, I leaned into God's Word,
- 8:56which meant picking up my Bible every single
- 9:00day. Was I perfect at it? No, but I made it a
- 9:07habit. Filling my home with worship music when
- 9:11I'm feeling down or attacked. When I lay in my
- 9:15scans I'll sing praise music in my head or I'll
- 9:19pray or I'll repeat verses to myself. It really
- 9:23removes the fear and adds a sense of comfort.
- 9:27It lets me know God's presence is with me and
- 9:32known. I learned to take communion every day
- 9:36too, not as a ritual thing, but a thing of honor
- 9:40and what Jesus did for me on the cross and just
- 9:44for me to take that time every morning to remember.
- 9:48He is the healer of all my sickness and disease.
- 9:54I eventually came to learn that God didn't place
- 9:57this disease on me. He doesn't place things on
- 10:01you either. That's the enemy. That's his lies
- 10:06God wants us alive and well and doing his will
- 10:11He might allow us to go through something because
- 10:15it puts our focus back on him It increases our
- 10:19faith and joy and the small moments of life The
- 10:25last couple years I was in a really bad place
- 10:28I was grieving and I was grieving hard. I've
- 10:36learned to now go through my days, taking moments
- 10:40to pray, praise Him, and make sure I start my
- 10:43day with Jesus. If you learn to sit in the quiet
- 10:50and practice gratitude, this is where the joy
- 10:52is, friends. Keep your eyes open and you see
- 10:56the joy and hope God places all around you. He
- 11:01wants a relationship with you. All that means
- 11:05is giving your heart to him and surrender it
- 11:07all to him. Trust him full heartedly. Faith moves
- 11:14mountains and with faith brings joy. He doesn't
- 11:19want us looking so far into the future burdened
- 11:23by our past or so run down we can't see the joy
- 11:26in the here and now. Fear, anxiety, worry, rebellion,
- 11:32confusion, chaos. None of these come from God.
- 11:37Having one -on -one moments with him has changed
- 11:40my life. Is it easy? No. I'm still going through
- 11:45the storm. You know, as of today, I'm in remission,
- 11:50but I still have to go back for scans monthly
- 11:54and blood work. And, you know, it's just, it's
- 11:59not easy. I feel like we get thrown into this
- 12:02meat grinder type situation and get thrown back
- 12:04out and we're really Expected to just get back
- 12:07to life and and live normally and it's just it's
- 12:10not like that we have so many, you know side
- 12:13effects from treatment and You know just things
- 12:18going on mentally that are challenging and it's
- 12:23very hard to just You know forget what you've
- 12:27been through and try to just move on like people
- 12:31expect you to but you know there's no room for
- 12:37the enemy like i now have strength and wisdom
- 12:40to battle being in his word showed me grace mercy
- 12:45love and redemption he's my redeemer the rock
- 12:49on which i stand i'm healed by the stripes of
- 12:52jesus and just a couple years ago I knew none
- 12:57of this. God is the anchor of our souls. We hold
- 13:02on to his promises and truth until the storm
- 13:05passes. This is bringing forth joy. In my journey
- 13:13time doesn't heal all wounds. It's what we plant
- 13:16in the soil of time that determines whether we're
- 13:19headed towards healing or towards bitterness.
- 13:23Don't let your hearts be so hardened by what
- 13:26storms you face. Everyone has to heal differently.
- 13:31As you walk through your storm, I encourage you
- 13:34to bring your honest questions to God. It's okay
- 13:37to do this. He knows. It's okay to tell him you're
- 13:43struggling and doubting, but don't let Satan
- 13:46take any more of your time away from him. Sit
- 13:49with Jesus. Trust him. rest in him. It's not
- 13:55your will anyway. It's his. It's what he wants
- 13:58for your life. He created you. I know that we
- 14:03can be so selfish and our own flesh and desires
- 14:07and wanting what we want, but it really is what
- 14:10he wants in his will. I know personally that
- 14:17he has bigger plans for me and all of you. If
- 14:22he wakes you up every morning, you have a purpose.
- 14:27He has a plan for you. He will see us through,
- 14:32and he has already prepared the way. No one knows
- 14:36the shoes you walk in, but he does. Let's go
- 14:40to him all the time, not just in time of troubles.
- 14:46Still praise him through all of it, and we can
- 14:50always find the joy. Let his peace and comfort
- 14:54come over you The storm that was meant to break
- 14:57you makes you I'd rather go through my storm
- 15:00with him than without him. I Want to look at
- 15:10a couple instances that occurred, you know in
- 15:13the Bible and This one is a story about law and
- 15:17his wife and they were leaving Sodom and Gomorrah
- 15:20and God says He's about to destroy it. Lot looks
- 15:25back after he says it and God says, I don't want
- 15:29you dwelling. I don't want you to look back at
- 15:33what you're leaving. Don't look back at friends.
- 15:38Then his wife looks back and she turned into
- 15:41a pillar of salt. She literally got hardened
- 15:45and stuck right where she was because she didn't
- 15:48know the hope and future plan God had for her.
- 15:51She doubted him. She didn't trust him. She looked
- 15:54back God is saying don't dwell. I have more for
- 15:58you. We're moving forward This is what the kingdom
- 16:03looks like it's advancing I have an adventure
- 16:06for you If you're walking by the power of the
- 16:10Holy Spirit and can't go on that adventure If
- 16:13you get stuck looking back at your past, that's
- 16:16exactly what happens you get turned into a pillar
- 16:19of salt Stuck in the same location forever Look
- 16:24forward to Jesus He's got a plan and a purpose
- 16:29for you Process the things of your past so you
- 16:33can move forward We've got a hope and a future
- 16:37This is in Jeremiah 29 11 Let's look at Moses
- 16:42He wanted to quit for sure leading all those
- 16:46people out of Egypt job He wished at one point
- 16:51that he didn't even exist and he wasn't born
- 16:54But God restored him and gave him back seven
- 16:58times what he lost and I know all the time I
- 17:03lost because I chose to go to Cleveland Clinic
- 17:06they You know had a really good sarcoma team
- 17:09and I knew like I just knew that's where God
- 17:12was calling me to go and It's a little over three
- 17:17hours for us. So you know all the time lost and
- 17:21the appointments and the surgeries and the treatments
- 17:23I really held on to that and I knew that you
- 17:27know if God saved my life he was definitely going
- 17:29to give me the time back that I lost. But back
- 17:34to Moses. Moses didn't do it just right but he
- 17:38didn't quit. It's not always going to be easy.
- 17:42God even told us this that we would have trials
- 17:45and tribulations, but take heart because he overcame
- 17:48the world Sit in the struggles and allow it to
- 17:53change you Change you in a way that leads you
- 17:56closer to God That gives you more faith and joy
- 18:01no matter the situation I Believe God sent me
- 18:06to tell someone you can't Do you know how many
- 18:10times I wanted to quit through this cancer journey?
- 18:13How hard it was to go through that? Especially
- 18:19when you have children. But I did not quit. It
- 18:27would be, you know, momentarily relief, but we
- 18:30need to see past that. The psalmist said, Praise
- 18:37the Lord all my soul and forget not all his benefits.
- 18:42Who forgives all sins, heals all your diseases,
- 18:47redeems your life from the pit, crowns you with
- 18:51love and compassion. I would rather go through
- 18:55a season of temporary uncertainty than compromise
- 18:59the trust of my identity. Stand now if you're
- 19:04making the decision to quit. God gave us purpose
- 19:09in life and if you are still breathing you still
- 19:13have purpose. God's joy isn't just to carry us
- 19:16through the good times. It's the strength that
- 19:19carries us through the tough ones. God's perfect
- 19:26will is worth everything you have to go through
- 19:29to obtain it. The waiting, the hills, the valleys,
- 19:34the mountains, the joyous, the quiet time, the
- 19:37prayers. The key to joy is submission to His
- 19:41will. Even if you're new to all this, you know,
- 19:47you don't know God's Word, you know, really just
- 19:51no matter where you are in your faith journey,
- 19:56whether you're a longtime follower, I feel we
- 20:00can all find joy our days and I hope you stick
- 20:04with me to have you know the hard conversations
- 20:07the fun conversations that we'll get to laugh
- 20:09and cry with each other and you know just enjoy
- 20:14some of the conversations and guests that I have
- 20:16on but just find the joy in life and just laugh
- 20:21and have a good time with us for a short time
- 20:24through the difficult times. I'd like to pause

- 22:04Okay, so some ways I'm finding joy, especially
- 22:09like in the morning, I change up my morning routine
- 22:11because it's just awesome. I mean, it's hard
- 22:15when you live in Pennsylvania, but we don't always
- 22:17have sunshine, but it's just awesome when we
- 22:21do to step outside first thing in the morning.
- 22:24Put your feet in the grass and get that grounding
- 22:26in. Let the sun shine at you. Get the red light.
- 22:30That is the way that I find joy first thing in
- 22:33the morning. And at the same time, I get the
- 22:36benefits, all the health benefits from it. Being
- 22:41thankful to move my body. If you have kids or
- 22:45children in your life, just take a minute to
- 22:48look at their faces or to hear about their day.
- 22:51And right there, just... Listening to them talk
- 22:54gives you joy. You can practice gratitude, praying
- 22:59throughout the day, starting your day with Jesus.
- 23:05I love to fill my home with workshop music, especially
- 23:08when I feel like I'm just down or being attacked.
- 23:16You know, take a family day. You can take 30
- 23:18minutes to yourself. Watch a sunrise or a sunset.
- 23:23always read the Bible and I would you know just
- 23:26really recommend that you start just by trying
- 23:33to read it in the morning just so that you can
- 23:35start your day out and have that word with you
- 23:38all throughout the day. So I like to end every
- 23:42podcast with a favorite Bible verse and since
- 23:44it's just me today I have Kings 25 this Bible
- 23:52verse Really stuck close to my heart Throughout
- 24:00this whole journey It states that I have heard
- 24:06your prayers I have you seeing your tears and
- 24:09I will heal you and Those are just some of the
- 24:12words that I kept so close to my heart throughout
- 24:14all of this Thank you all for joining today's
- 24:20podcast. I really hope you enjoyed it I do hope
- 24:25that you guys you know if you found This enjoyable
- 24:30Or inspiring I hope that you share it with someone
- 24:34Or just if you can even share the show for me
- 24:37if you can hit like and follow you can get all
- 24:40the updates of new episodes that come out and
- 24:46You know, I just really appreciate it. I hope
- 24:48that even if this helps one person It was worth,
- 24:53you know all of my time So I just you know, as
- 24:57always I want you guys to go out and find the
- 24:59joy today. Bye friends
