- 0:52Speaker 2: All right, well it is also Colliente out here. Not really,
- 0:55Speaker 2: I'm just completely good. I just love saying Callie, especially
- 0:58Speaker 2: when it's fun sponsor. It's just it's good pizza.
- 1:01Speaker 3: That was great. But listen, listen.
- 1:02Speaker 2: They were the postgame pizza sponsor after after the game
- 1:06Speaker 2: on Thursday night, yep, I can tell you. And nothing
- 1:09Speaker 2: against their phenomenal staff up there in the press box
- 1:13Speaker 2: at Acre Stadium, but that was a welcome surprise. It
- 1:17Speaker 2: cuts a little square cut Sicilian style good pep I
- 1:20Speaker 2: mean little cut Pepperoni.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I mean it was, and they got the cheese loosing.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Off extra extra mots on it.
- 1:27Speaker 4: So it was And you know, Max, that's important for
- 1:29Speaker 4: me because you know my diet now is I limit
- 1:32Speaker 4: my carbs. So when it comes to pizza, a lot
- 1:34Speaker 4: of times I just scraped the toppings off and I
- 1:37Speaker 4: have a little bit of crush, not a whole lot
- 1:38Speaker 4: that I try to keep my but it's important for
- 1:41Speaker 4: me to have a pizza that the toppings are not sparse.
- 1:45Speaker 4: There's a lot of toppings. I'm a pepperoni guy, So
- 1:48Speaker 4: for me, that was perfect. On Thursday night, man, I
- 1:50Speaker 4: downed like three of those, like nobody's business.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Afterwards, it was it was good. I had a nice,
- 1:55Speaker 3: healthy slice.
- 1:56Speaker 2: And then you know, on the Green Bay Packers side,
- 1:59Speaker 2: so Packers Radio is normally right next to us in
- 2:02Speaker 2: our booth, but for the preseason Packers had TV and
- 2:06Speaker 2: so one of my good buddies, of course form in
- 2:08Speaker 2: Pittsburgh's seer, John Coon was the analyst for the Packers,
- 2:11Speaker 2: also legendary for Shippensburg. Yeah, so so it was good
- 2:18Speaker 2: to see John. And then his play by play guy,
- 2:21Speaker 2: the legendary the voice Kevin Harlan. And Kevin was over there,
- 2:26Speaker 2: and you know I cut my teeth as a young
- 2:28Speaker 2: guy with Kevin Hart.
- 2:29Speaker 3: We're you about to say?
- 2:30Speaker 4: No, I was gonna say so that. So I saw
- 2:32Speaker 4: Kevin Harlaneah, but you just answered my question because I
- 2:35Speaker 4: saw who was doing the game with him. I had
- 2:37Speaker 4: no clue who that was. Yeah, but I'm glad you
- 2:41Speaker 4: so I And I actually had forgotten to say to
- 2:43Speaker 4: you or Rob in the booth, Hey, do you guys know?
- 2:44Speaker 4: Because I said to Wes Jueler, who was next to me,
- 2:46Speaker 4: I said, west do you know who that is doing
- 2:47Speaker 4: the game with Harlan? He goes, no, I have no clue.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I had no clue.
- 2:50Speaker 4: It was okay, well, good now we know.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Now we know.
- 2:52Speaker 2: And John normally in season is the radio sideline for
- 2:56Speaker 2: the Crapers. So in preseason, just like Charlie comes and
- 2:59Speaker 2: does a color for TV with Pomp, you know, John
- 3:03Speaker 2: came over and did the TV. But but Kevin Harlan.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I cut my teeth as a young broadcaster with Kevin
- 3:10Speaker 2: and Kurt Warner and Monday Night football for Westwood One. Yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 2: it was so I was, I was, I was, Yeah,
- 3:17Speaker 2: you know, I got my shot to first start doing
- 3:19Speaker 2: that after I'd started doing some high school football calls.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And learned a lot from Kevin.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So, you know, when you spend time with your cruise
- 3:27Speaker 2: and you know, we go to pre and post post
- 3:29Speaker 2: game dinners together, have our production meetings, Kevin Harlan could
- 3:35Speaker 2: easily house like if if I had to pick, like, okay, man,
- 3:38Speaker 2: we're going to a food eating contest and we gotta
- 3:41Speaker 2: we gotta get volume. Kevin Harlan's who I'm putting on
- 3:44Speaker 2: my list. You never know, and it's just it's so subtle.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Harlan like you.
- 3:49Speaker 3: But Harlan ate all the crust with it.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I mean he went for We were in Charlotte one
- 3:56Speaker 2: night and we had just done the Panthers a Panthers game,
- 4:01Speaker 2: and we went to this Red Eyed diner right downtown
- 4:04Speaker 2: in Charlotte, and I'm.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Sitting I'm like, man, you know, what do I get?
- 4:08Speaker 3: You know? I ended up going like it was a
- 4:09Speaker 3: a little for mashed potatoes, Like it was a straight diner.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Kevin ordered a whole chicken, like eight pieces of fried
- 4:16Speaker 2: chicken and the sides. He downed it all and didn't
- 4:20Speaker 2: think twice about it, like didn't bat an eye, and
- 4:24Speaker 2: it wasn't like and it was like like biscuits, like
- 4:27Speaker 2: there was a gravy that was with it.
- 4:30Speaker 3: And and then I.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Think I think it was a potato. Yeah no, no, no,
- 4:36Speaker 2: he was I think it was green beans. I think
- 4:37Speaker 2: it was green beans.
- 4:38Speaker 3: But housed it all like debone, like how we eat.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Chicken wings as we just saw clean, this is a
- 4:47Speaker 2: whole chicken. So Kevin was up there, so you said, yeah,
- 4:50Speaker 2: I mean he was like, oh this is delicious. It's
- 4:52Speaker 2: like Kevin, I know, but I digressed. That was a
- 4:54Speaker 2: fun little sidebar story from the game. But we were
- 4:59Speaker 2: gonna talk about offensive line.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, what are your I mean, let give
- 5:03Speaker 3: you your thoughts, and I'm gonna start to look for
- 5:05Speaker 3: my soapbox.
- 5:06Speaker 4: I thought it was a tough start. Dylan Cook too
- 5:10Speaker 4: early sacks giving up. I also noted Troy Futanho had
- 5:13Speaker 4: that early penalty on the drive. That's not especially and
- 5:16Speaker 4: I think it's more important for Dylan Cook because he's
- 5:18Speaker 4: in that battle right now. Max right with with with
- 5:21Speaker 4: another Max MAXI on Achory good name as you and
- 5:23Speaker 4: I always talked about for an offensive lineman, so not
- 5:26Speaker 4: that you know. I thought I had a lot of
- 5:28Speaker 4: upside on Dylan Cook at the end of twenty twenty
- 5:30Speaker 4: five going into this season, and I still do. It's
- 5:33Speaker 4: only one preseason game, so you can't judge all the
- 5:35Speaker 4: work on just and what did he play maybe the
- 5:36Speaker 4: first two or three series.
- 5:38Speaker 3: I don't know how much he played. He played the
- 5:40Speaker 3: first half? Oh really?
- 5:42Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, okay, so he played.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Him with him and Spence, okay.
- 5:45Speaker 4: And I know I also know on the flip side
- 5:48Speaker 4: of that, Roger Jones had the most snaps I think
- 5:50Speaker 4: out of all the offensive linemen, right like fIF five
- 5:52Speaker 4: or sixty somewhere in there, So he got a lot
- 5:54Speaker 4: of work in. And now I always say when we're
- 5:58Speaker 4: doing games, if you don't talk about an offensive lineman,
- 6:01Speaker 4: that's a good thing. That means he's doing his job.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Because the only time you really talk about an offensive
- 6:05Speaker 4: lineman is if he's called for a penody or he
- 6:08Speaker 4: misses a block. Right, So if you're not talking about
- 6:10Speaker 4: an offensive lineman, normally they're doing their job and they're
- 6:13Speaker 4: and they're in a good spot. So I didn't talk
- 6:15Speaker 4: about Broderick Jones much or I didn't talk about him,
- 6:17Speaker 4: and all you guys were doing the game, but with
- 6:19Speaker 4: West Jeweler on the flip side him and I watching
- 6:22Speaker 4: the game and doing our thing behind you and Rob,
- 6:24Speaker 4: I didn't talk about Broderick Jones. So my thinking is
- 6:27Speaker 4: Broderick Jones had a clean game. You can correct me
- 6:30Speaker 4: if he didn't. But I did notice Dial and Cook
- 6:32Speaker 4: a few times, and I did notice Troy Fontana a
- 6:34Speaker 4: few times, So that stood out to me early on,
- 6:38Speaker 4: but you know, it got better as it went on.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I mean, Zach Frasier's still a beast at center. No
- 6:43Speaker 4: worries there right when you look at the rest of
- 6:45Speaker 4: the offensive line for the Steelers, Mason McCormick, Spencer Anderson,
- 6:48Speaker 4: you said, played the whole game too, along with you
- 6:50Speaker 4: just about him. I think I think Spencer Anderson's doing
- 6:53Speaker 4: a great job at right guard. I do from what
- 6:55Speaker 4: I've seen up here at camp so far. I don't
- 6:58Speaker 4: want to clear him the victor yet because I know
- 7:00Speaker 4: brock Hoffman's h He's a dog man. He's a dog that.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Yeah, he got he got some reps too. Jennings Dunker's also.
- 7:08Speaker 4: But I think right now Spencer Anderson's in the elite spot.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Dylan Cook, I'm not too sure. I got to see
- 7:13Speaker 4: more maxi Ona Chory. What we saw before he got
- 7:15Speaker 4: hurt was brilliant. We were excited about it. But now
- 7:19Speaker 4: he has to get on the field.
- 7:20Speaker 2: If he doesn't practice tomorrow, I don't see him playing Friday.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I'm just gonna be honest with you, And.
- 7:25Speaker 3: That's not about punishing him.
- 7:29Speaker 2: It's about it would be irresponsible to put him in
- 7:32Speaker 2: with the lack of practice, like full speed practice. So
- 7:37Speaker 2: I need him because when I put him out there.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Once I put him out there, you can't untake that.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Like I said this, especially for a rookie, right, Yeah,
- 7:44Speaker 2: there's only one first impression. It's just the first thing
- 7:48Speaker 2: you said earlier. So you have to make sure that
- 7:50Speaker 2: if when you step out there, you're putting him in
- 7:52Speaker 2: the most advantageous, positive position to make the best case
- 7:57Speaker 2: for himself. So I just wouldn't do it if I
- 8:00Speaker 2: don't get any padded practices out here from him since
- 8:03Speaker 2: he was injured, and then when we go back to
- 8:05Speaker 2: the South Side, obviously none of us will know what
- 8:07Speaker 2: that practice looks like since we won't have access to that.
- 8:10Speaker 3: So I don't know if if that's.
- 8:12Speaker 2: A padded practice on Wednesday. You got to practice to
- 8:14Speaker 2: play right, have to practice him not make the club
- 8:17Speaker 2: in the tub.
- 8:17Speaker 3: And especially when you're talking about a starting position.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I'm not going out on hopes and wishes for a
- 8:22Speaker 2: starting position, like if you are the guy, if you know,
- 8:25Speaker 2: just like we see with these quarterbacks right when you
- 8:27Speaker 2: see first round quarterbacks are assumed leaders.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Guess what they're doing. They're getting wraps in the preseason.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They got to get ready for what's out there because
- 8:35Speaker 2: they don't have the encyclopedia, they don't have the knowledge
- 8:38Speaker 2: to work off of a prior experience. All experiences are
- 8:42Speaker 2: new experiences, especially for rookies, and you build your database
- 8:46Speaker 2: here so that you can then hopefully replicate and have
- 8:50Speaker 2: some shared experience to draw on when you get in
- 8:53Speaker 2: that situation in game time.
- 8:54Speaker 3: So you know, as I look at that, you know
- 8:57Speaker 3: my assessment of the line.
- 9:00Speaker 2: For me, there was too much pressure on Mason Rudolphin's
- 9:04Speaker 2: the first couples.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and and people like, oh, well, why was Mason
- 9:08Speaker 3: even taking the rest? And it needs to be all
- 9:09Speaker 3: the road. No, the backup quarterback needs to do and
- 9:12Speaker 3: he is clearly the backup. So let me just throw some.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Cold water on a lot of the hot streak that
- 9:17Speaker 2: a lot of young people that have played well. It
- 9:21Speaker 2: was one game. I loved what I saw. It gives
- 9:26Speaker 2: me the opportunity to say, hey, I want to see more.
- 9:28Speaker 2: So like watching a trailer to a movie in the theater,
- 9:30Speaker 2: I still have the main movie. I'm watching these trailers
- 9:33Speaker 2: are looks good.
- 9:34Speaker 3: It looks good, but I'm not I'll see it in October,
- 9:37Speaker 3: you know, when the movie is actually released. It was
- 9:40Speaker 3: a great trailer.
- 9:41Speaker 2: That enticed me to say I want to see more.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And I thought both of our young quarterbacks did that.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Will and Drew did that. But for the offensive line,
- 9:49Speaker 2: what Mason overcame is still was ten of eleven and
- 9:53Speaker 2: really that eleventh one if he's not evading a sack
- 9:56Speaker 2: in his face, that got that came up the middle
- 9:59Speaker 2: and he pirouetted out of that, drove climb the ladder
- 10:02Speaker 2: and made that throw and Jeremy Bernard narrowly misses it
- 10:04Speaker 2: by less than three four inches. It's the Isaiah Likely
- 10:08Speaker 2: play from week one.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Yes, you know it was Ravens Chiefs.
- 10:12Speaker 2: If that doesn't happen, you're talking about guy who went
- 10:14Speaker 2: perfect and had a touchdown.
- 10:17Speaker 4: So yeah, he played behind the sticks in those first
- 10:20Speaker 4: couple series, did Mason Rudolph. It wasn't his fault because
- 10:23Speaker 4: it was the offensive line between penalties and sacks given.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah, penalties and sacks, and I think that's something that
- 10:29Speaker 2: we have to take into account.
- 10:30Speaker 3: But it was below the line for me. The run.
- 10:32Speaker 2: The run game wasn't wasn't as spectacular as I thought
- 10:35Speaker 2: it was going to be. But you know, the one
- 10:37Speaker 2: caveat that I will say I'm being hard right now,
- 10:40Speaker 2: but I also am gonna sit there and throw this
- 10:42Speaker 2: out here. Four new positions played by the offensive line.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, right tackle, right guard.
- 10:51Speaker 3: And left guard and left tackle because good call.
- 10:55Speaker 4: So this is the first first actual.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Time we've seen we've seen it together because.
- 10:59Speaker 4: We've seen it Minnie Camp, we've seen it up here
- 11:01Speaker 4: in Latrow.
- 11:02Speaker 3: But you're right, it doesn't count till the lights come on.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Yeah, And that was something that I think people got
- 11:07Speaker 2: enamored with, Like, no, it's only two positions.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Now it's four. Everybody's auditioning for all four.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Like it looks good and that's what we assume for
- 11:15Speaker 2: the left side, but it's not guaranteed and how they
- 11:18Speaker 2: work together. And what did Mike Mike McCarthy say from
- 11:21Speaker 2: the very beginning of training camp. I want to see combinations.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I want to see combinations work together. It's bigger than
- 11:27Speaker 2: an individual battle or just the whole line.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I need to see the combinations work.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Together, and the combinations look like the first time combinations
- 11:35Speaker 2: have played in the game together.
- 11:36Speaker 4: You know I've already won Max Starks over. I think
- 11:39Speaker 4: I have because we've tuk a lot of food type stuff.
- 11:41Speaker 4: But here's where I'm only going to win you over
- 11:42Speaker 4: when I say this to you. I remember a guy
- 11:45Speaker 4: who talked about when Roderick Jones was making the move
- 11:48Speaker 4: from one side to the other, And I remember a
- 11:50Speaker 4: guy going on on an SNR show and talking about
- 11:53Speaker 4: how difficult that is and how the public perception of
- 11:56Speaker 4: that from a fan standpoint, it's like, Wow, if you
- 11:58Speaker 4: play right tackle on you move a left tackle, it's
- 12:00Speaker 4: still tackle. Or if you play left tackle when you
- 12:02Speaker 4: move the right tackle, it's no big change. You're a
- 12:05Speaker 4: guy that went through it, and you're a guy that
- 12:07Speaker 4: stepped up to defend Roger Jones. And I'm sure you'll
- 12:09Speaker 4: do the same with Troy Fontano as well. Going from
- 12:12Speaker 4: one side of the other, including on that side. Mason McCormick, right,
- 12:15Speaker 4: it's not easy.
- 12:16Speaker 2: It's not easy. And I took the first couple of
- 12:19Speaker 2: days of camp just to break it down for everybody.
- 12:21Speaker 2: But of course we've had a lot of shows since then,
- 12:23Speaker 2: and yeah, sometimes you get frenzied and there's like cotton
- 12:27Speaker 2: ball in your ears and you know, as a little
- 12:29Speaker 2: tingly feeling in your toes. But that is what the
- 12:33Speaker 2: reality is, what we saw like, it's an adjustment still,
- 12:35Speaker 2: it's a physiological and biomechanical difference between being a right
- 12:41Speaker 2: tackle and a left tackle. Richard Sherman, people all argue
- 12:46Speaker 2: was one of the great corners in this league.
- 12:49Speaker 3: He only played on one side. He could not he
- 12:51Speaker 3: did not travel. That's from a corner perspective. That's a cornerback.
- 12:54Speaker 2: So just imagine an offensive line who's on the field
- 12:57Speaker 2: probably had argue just as much, if not more than
- 13:00Speaker 2: a lot of those other positions like offensive line. You know,
- 13:03Speaker 2: I I equated to this right, it was seven three hundred.
- 13:07Speaker 2: You know what did the queens say to Leonidas? Come
- 13:10Speaker 2: back with your shielder on it. That is what it
- 13:13Speaker 2: is as an offensive line.
- 13:14Speaker 3: The only way you come out of a game is injury.
- 13:18Speaker 2: It is injury only, and maybe every once in a
- 13:21Speaker 2: while is a performance thing, but very rare that you
- 13:23Speaker 2: have a performance adjustment in.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Game, well, especially right what you just said there at
- 13:27Speaker 4: the end, Especially in game. I mean sometimes positional players,
- 13:30Speaker 4: you're right in game you can you can pull them
- 13:32Speaker 4: out or put even a quarterback for that matter. But
- 13:34Speaker 4: now right offensive lineman, you don't see too much movement.
- 13:36Speaker 4: That stuff's usually done during the week, right during.
- 13:40Speaker 3: The game switches, but not an in game switch.
- 13:43Speaker 2: So I think that's what we have to be patient like,
- 13:46Speaker 2: and that's why I said it's below the line right now,
- 13:48Speaker 2: but I expected it to be below the line like
- 13:50Speaker 2: it would have been more crazy to everything have worked
- 13:53Speaker 2: out great for the first preseason game of like I said,
- 13:57Speaker 2: four different positions working together, because for Zach Frasier, it's
- 14:00Speaker 2: an adjustment because the guy he always depended on his
- 14:03Speaker 2: right side is now in his left ear right, and
- 14:05Speaker 2: how they work those combinations, different footwork, you know, it's
- 14:09Speaker 2: it's going from you know, if anybody's taking ballroom dancing,
- 14:13Speaker 2: you know you can't do the same footwork in the
- 14:15Speaker 2: fox trot that you can in the roomba.
- 14:16Speaker 3: You know, it's like they're two different things.
- 14:18Speaker 2: They're still in the same category, but they're two different
- 14:21Speaker 2: foot sets and two different mindsets.
- 14:23Speaker 4: So I think I think we just planned the seed
- 14:25Speaker 4: for Max Starks to be on Dancing with the Stars
- 14:27Speaker 4: the next Pittsburgh Steeler listen.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I went and watched Hines for the tape.
- 14:31Speaker 2: We all went out there one night and we watched
- 14:34Speaker 2: it do the Pasa doble the first time, and that
- 14:36Speaker 2: was his first like unanimous we love it. Was myself,
- 14:40Speaker 2: James Ferrier and James Harrison.
- 14:44Speaker 3: We went to that taping that night and and it
- 14:46Speaker 3: was awesome.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I mean, obviously Hines had the little Mattador outfit with
- 14:50Speaker 2: with with the belly button house. Yeah, with the belly
- 14:52Speaker 2: button out I was like, wait to say, you wear.
- 14:53Speaker 3: You wearing this?
- 14:54Speaker 4: Man?
- 14:54Speaker 3: You got your belly button all out in the public.
- 14:56Speaker 2: But you know that's what it is, right, but it
- 15:00Speaker 2: is different and you have to practice it, and so
- 15:03Speaker 2: they have to rehearse this choreographed synchronization together. So it
- 15:07Speaker 2: was some backside cut off stuff that was just lost
- 15:09Speaker 2: too soon. And I've mentioned this. I mentioned in the broadcast.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Warren Brinston spent way too much time in our headspace
- 15:15Speaker 2: and on our tongues because he was cutting off the backside.
- 15:18Speaker 2: So Lou Nichols and Travis Homer didn't have the cutback
- 15:20Speaker 2: lanes that you were expecting.
- 15:22Speaker 3: But that's a thing that takes chemistry.
- 15:24Speaker 2: It takes time, and when you're doing a wholesale change
- 15:27Speaker 2: like this, you have to be patient with it. And
- 15:30Speaker 2: I want to see the growth from game one to
- 15:33Speaker 2: game two. Dylan Cook with stiff, nervous, wide eyed, because
- 15:37Speaker 2: this is the first time he's really been considering in
- 15:38Speaker 2: his entire professional career a real contender for a starting role,
- 15:44Speaker 2: but not the favorite. But he's getting first crack at it,
- 15:49Speaker 2: so I expect those nerves. I expect him to be
- 15:51Speaker 2: better this upcoming game than he was.
- 15:54Speaker 3: The last game. Spencer Anderson was solid, but he also
- 15:57Speaker 3: has some interior pressure. This is first off tune. He
- 16:00Speaker 3: getting a chance to be the contender and he's actually
- 16:02Speaker 3: the clubhouse favorite for that job. Can he keep it right?
- 16:06Speaker 3: Can you keep what you have?
- 16:08Speaker 2: And then for Mason Troy, it's about we've got to
- 16:10Speaker 2: get on the same page, you know, because, like you said,
- 16:13Speaker 2: if not, then Roger Jones does he's waited somehow because.
- 16:17Speaker 3: He's just trying to see where he can fit in.
- 16:18Speaker 3: So he has to just play.
- 16:19Speaker 2: At a high level at all times. And he did
- 16:23Speaker 2: get a lot of snapsingly. I mean he at one
- 16:24Speaker 2: point I thought he's going to exclusively only play left
- 16:26Speaker 2: tackle the entire game, but he jumped over in the
- 16:30Speaker 2: fourth quarter played some right and I saw Jennings Dunker,
- 16:33Speaker 2: who's been primarily left guard behind Mason McCormick and all
- 16:35Speaker 2: these practices right tackle in the game.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Ryan mccollins been strictly center, We saw him play some
- 16:42Speaker 3: right guard. We saw cos.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of different combinations were worked in that game,
- 16:46Speaker 2: and I don't think people paid because, like you said,
- 16:48Speaker 2: you're watching Drew Aller, you're watching Will Howard, and they're
- 16:51Speaker 2: doing their thing and they're making the big plays.
- 16:54Speaker 3: But those combinations upfront that allowed them to do that
- 16:56Speaker 3: is also important to watch.
- 16:57Speaker 4: And Max, I think you also hit the knell on
- 16:59Speaker 4: the head too, and you set up how that offensive
- 17:01Speaker 4: line has to eventually gel together too, because another big
- 17:05Speaker 4: misconception out there is an offensive line from left tackle
- 17:08Speaker 4: to right tackling in between has to be able to
- 17:10Speaker 4: communicate with each other. Yes, And again I yield to
- 17:13Speaker 4: you with this because I didn't play at the NFL level,
- 17:15Speaker 4: but I would think that is the ultimate thing you
- 17:18Speaker 4: need from an offensive lineman at the pro level. Because
- 17:21Speaker 4: of the blitzes and the changes on the defense that
- 17:24Speaker 4: has done a play after play after play, that offensive
- 17:27Speaker 4: line has to be able to communicate with each other
- 17:29Speaker 4: at all times. And if you're a brand new unit
- 17:31Speaker 4: and you're switching spots, it might take some time to
- 17:33Speaker 4: get there.
- 17:34Speaker 3: It takes some time.
- 17:34Speaker 2: And also a left tackle is going to see things
- 17:37Speaker 2: differently than what a center sees, and especially what the
- 17:39Speaker 2: right side is going to see, just because there's different things.
- 17:43Speaker 2: If you get the slot to your side, you got
- 17:45Speaker 2: to know if that slot's backed up or not. Right
- 17:47Speaker 2: safety playing over the top, is you see you playing
- 17:49Speaker 2: in the middle of the field. Are we in a
- 17:50Speaker 2: man situation? We in his own situation? And sometimes the center,
- 17:53Speaker 2: if his heads between his legs or he's looking at
- 17:55Speaker 2: others the stuff, he doesn't see it, and so you
- 17:57Speaker 2: have to be able to relay that information very quickly.
- 17:59Speaker 2: And early on in my career I was blessed because
- 18:02Speaker 2: offensive line we handled all the hots for Ben Early
- 18:04Speaker 2: in his career, and so we had to learn how
- 18:08Speaker 2: to read shell defense and we had to communicate that
- 18:11Speaker 2: to each other. So Marvelle Smith had to be able
- 18:13Speaker 2: to communicate to Alan Fanica, which got back to Jeff Hardy's,
- 18:16Speaker 2: which then let Kendall Simmons and myself know and vice versa.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I had to relay as a young guy down to Kendall,
- 18:22Speaker 2: back to Jeff to get to Allen, to get to Marvel.
- 18:24Speaker 2: It's an intricate game of telephone and the communication has
- 18:27Speaker 2: to be the same.
- 18:28Speaker 3: You can't change the words. You know.
- 18:29Speaker 4: By the way, how long did you have to take?
- 18:31Speaker 4: How long did it take for you to do that?
- 18:32Speaker 3: Each play?
- 18:33Speaker 4: Three seconds?
- 18:34Speaker 2: We had about three and a half to four seconds
- 18:35Speaker 2: after the initial Mike call, so.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Minutes right now. And it's not like I was. It's
- 18:40Speaker 3: not like there was a dummy in front of me.
- 18:42Speaker 2: I mean, you're talking about Javon Curse, Richard Cmore, Willie McGinnis,
- 18:47Speaker 2: Like you do this in front of some straight certified
- 18:49Speaker 2: killers on defense. You got to you gotta figure out,
- 18:51Speaker 2: oh man, we got we gotta get this done quick
- 18:54Speaker 2: because we need to be on their combinations because they
- 18:55Speaker 2: are coming and for the interior guys.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Right, you got big bodies you gotta deal with.
- 19:00Speaker 2: You got to deal with Sam Adams, Pat Williams and
- 19:03Speaker 2: the like Ted Washington, Jamal will I mean, it's not
- 19:06Speaker 2: like we're just playing against the be squad. This isn't
- 19:08Speaker 2: card walkthrough like this is live game and my quarterback
- 19:11Speaker 2: could get killed off subject.
- 19:12Speaker 4: But I'm just enjoying this conversation with you. I mean,
- 19:14Speaker 4: you're you're a large man, as we know as you
- 19:16Speaker 4: sit here and especially during your play days. But who
- 19:18Speaker 4: was the largest defensive player that you faced?
- 19:21Speaker 3: Man?
- 19:21Speaker 2: Albert Hainsworth huge, he was huge. But I played Albert
- 19:24Speaker 2: in college. I'm played against Albert and John Henderson. I
- 19:27Speaker 2: played against Richard Seymour and Marcus Stroud. Those were the
- 19:30Speaker 2: combos at Georgia and Tennessee at the same time.
- 19:33Speaker 4: So I saw the iron.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it was truly.
- 19:36Speaker 2: And then you had guys off there as will Overstreet
- 19:38Speaker 2: was the was the defensive end long career in Atlanta.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Then I had David Pollock, you know at Georgia you
- 19:45Speaker 2: had I mean, you just had the who's who. And
- 19:46Speaker 2: then Vince will Fork another huge, small squader guy guy
- 19:50Speaker 2: played against the high school college and the pros. So
- 19:53Speaker 2: it was you know you, it's like you have a
- 19:55Speaker 2: certain level of familiarity, but there's no comfortability.
- 19:58Speaker 3: You can never feel coming. Man, I got this, dude,
- 20:01Speaker 3: and we're good to go. Yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I mean it's a constant thing. So I just I
- 20:05Speaker 2: look at it and I say, hey, this is what
- 20:07Speaker 2: this is what it.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Means to be big boy football. And I have no doubt,
- 20:11Speaker 3: no doubt.
- 20:13Speaker 2: I might sit here and criticize, but I have all
- 20:15Speaker 2: the faith in the world in that offensive line. I
- 20:17Speaker 2: love the youthful talent, I love what they bring to
- 20:19Speaker 2: the table. It's just about it coming together.
- 20:21Speaker 4: I think, like we talked about earlier in the broadcast
- 20:24Speaker 4: about the secondary and the depth and the talent of
- 20:26Speaker 4: the defensive line, I can make the same case for
- 20:29Speaker 4: this offensive line that it's been a lot of years
- 20:31Speaker 4: when we sit here and look on paper at what
- 20:33Speaker 4: they have with a potential starting offensive line and what's
- 20:36Speaker 4: behind them as backups too, that you've got to be
- 20:38Speaker 4: excited about the future of this offensive line with a
- 20:40Speaker 4: guy like Jennings Dunker among others, and of course MAXI
- 20:43Speaker 4: on itch or but Max, he has to get on
- 20:46Speaker 4: the field. He's got to get back on the field.
- 20:48Speaker 4: But I'm with you.
- 20:49Speaker 2: You can't rush him health as wealth and availability is
- 20:52Speaker 2: the best ability.
- 20:53Speaker 3: So I'm not trying to rush.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I enjoy smoke meats and I enjoy crockpot dinners, all
- 21:00Speaker 2: those take time.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Same thing here with.
- 21:01Speaker 2: That order where you're going, Yeah, all these six and
- 21:04Speaker 2: with that we're gonna take a break.
- 21:06Speaker 3: I like it.
- 21:06Speaker 2: We will be back with more here inside the Locker

- 22:17Speaker 2: the show keeps going even though it's not taped.
- 22:20Speaker 4: On air, and it might be better when we're not
- 22:23Speaker 4: on it.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, it's a lot more fun.
- 22:25Speaker 2: So we were breaking down a situation going back in
- 22:28Speaker 2: the old time capsule there and we're talking about Florida
- 22:32Speaker 2: football back when I played, So the state of Florida football,
- 22:35Speaker 2: not just UF football. Just want to clarify that. Of course,
- 22:38Speaker 2: it's always go Gators here inside the locker room. But
- 22:41Speaker 2: we were just talking about the different levels and guys
- 22:44Speaker 2: and competition going up in there.
- 22:47Speaker 4: You know, you know Max, And that brings me up
- 22:49Speaker 4: to a good segue with the Florida talk. So let
- 22:51Speaker 4: me ask you this. We were having a nice discussion
- 22:54Speaker 4: off air yesterday between myself, Bob Lavriola, and Tom Offerman
- 22:58Speaker 4: about what's more heated the Raven Steelers rivalry or the
- 23:03Speaker 4: Ohio State Michigan rivalry. Now I'll take out the OSU
- 23:08Speaker 4: Michigan thing and I'll replace it with Florida Florida.
- 23:11Speaker 3: State for you.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Yeah, No, it's Florida Georgia.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Florida, Georgia, and I played Miami three out of my
- 23:18Speaker 2: four years, two back when they're heyday.
- 23:20Speaker 3: So so two part question.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Yeah, let's first identify the Gators' biggest rival, Georgia Georgia. Okay,
- 23:25Speaker 4: all right, so then I'll eliminate Florida State in Miami
- 23:28Speaker 4: and part of my ignorance, my friend. Yeah with that,
- 23:31Speaker 4: So what for you, because you did both Raven Steelers
- 23:35Speaker 4: or Bulldogs Gators.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I would say Raven Steelers was the closest you were
- 23:41Speaker 2: ever going to get to a college rivalry in the
- 23:43Speaker 2: professional level.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Good answer.
- 23:45Speaker 2: So it was when I say, there was just a
- 23:48Speaker 2: complete disdain for somebody and not knowing their familial history,
- 23:54Speaker 2: whatever their upbringing.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Was, it didn't matter. You had. You had a.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Black helmet with that weird looking bird on the side
- 24:01Speaker 2: of it looks like a rat bird.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I always call you rat birds.
- 24:04Speaker 2: And then you had the g but you knew as
- 24:06Speaker 2: a slobbery dog behind that g So those two rivalries,
- 24:11Speaker 2: I was blessed to say that I got to play
- 24:13Speaker 2: in some of the most competitive at each level. You know,
- 24:16Speaker 2: we could talk about the Auburn Alabama old fashioned hate.
- 24:19Speaker 2: We could talk about, you know, Ohio State, Michigan, we
- 24:23Speaker 2: can talk about you know USC UCLA historic and insert
- 24:29Speaker 2: rivalries everywhere. Everybody has theirs in their conference and now
- 24:32Speaker 2: you don't really have as much of those because of
- 24:34Speaker 2: the conference crossover and everything now, but you know that
- 24:38Speaker 2: rivalry Raven Steelers early two thousands, who talk about oh
- 24:45Speaker 2: ray Lewis, Terrell, Suggs, you.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Know, Joey Porter on our side, Oh well.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Joey, I mean, Troy ed Reid. I mean there was some.
- 24:54Speaker 2: I mean there's a lot of Hall of famers that
- 24:56Speaker 2: played in that. In that rivalry, I mean, it can
- 24:57Speaker 2: have its own hall of fame like from that era,
- 25:00Speaker 2: Like you can go and have a Who's Who in
- 25:03Speaker 2: that one. But I think that and but that's what
- 25:05Speaker 2: makes sports so great is when you can create those
- 25:08Speaker 2: rivalry situations. I think now you look at it, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 2: I think it now shifts to the A like the
- 25:13Speaker 2: NFC West has become what the old AFC North is
- 25:16Speaker 2: Like it's so good, great on great, on great, and
- 25:18Speaker 2: then there's like the Cardinals and the Browns.
- 25:20Speaker 4: Right, But I was gonna say, just take the Cardinals
- 25:22Speaker 4: out of it.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Take the Cardinals, take the Browns out of ours. Yeah.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Outside of the Cardinals, you got three teams that potentially
- 25:28Speaker 4: could win, not only go to the Super Bowl, win
- 25:30Speaker 4: the Super.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Bowl, and have represented the NFC in multiple Super Bowls
- 25:34Speaker 2: in the recently in the last decade. I mean, those
- 25:36Speaker 2: three have been seminal in the conversation. So I think
- 25:40Speaker 2: when you look at that, and then the NFC North
- 25:42Speaker 2: is a blood bath as well. So I mean you're
- 25:44Speaker 2: seeing more of that competitive balance where it like in
- 25:46Speaker 2: early two thousand it was just raven Steelers.
- 25:49Speaker 4: But see when I answered that question yesterday with Labs
- 25:52Speaker 4: and Tom. You know, I said, from my perspective, people
- 25:56Speaker 4: I talked to from Ohio State or Michigan and I
- 25:58Speaker 4: have no skin in the game because I grew up
- 25:59Speaker 4: here in Pittsburgh, grew up a pitch football fan. Sorry,
- 26:03Speaker 4: but I grew up a Gator fan. Max no fall Hill.
- 26:07Speaker 4: But h I said, you know, when you talk to
- 26:09Speaker 4: somebody from Michigan or Ohio State, they won't even say
- 26:12Speaker 4: the other name of it. That team up north or
- 26:14Speaker 4: that other team from the South, they don't even name it.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Whereas the Steelers Ravens. Yeah, they hate each other, but
- 26:20Speaker 4: I felt like there was at least a little bit
- 26:22Speaker 4: of respect maybe because absolutely not, No, because I thought
- 26:25Speaker 4: there ran very very similar with the with the defense
- 26:29Speaker 4: defense defense, Run, Run, Run Run.
- 26:31Speaker 3: If Terrell Suggs was on fire, you know how the
- 26:34Speaker 3: phrase ends, I wouldn't I wouldn't doubt that.
- 26:37Speaker 2: So no, I don't Now I now have I softened
- 26:41Speaker 2: in my in my old age, and I can appreciate
- 26:43Speaker 2: what it was in the moment.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Absolutely. I saw Helodi Nada last year. He was in
- 26:47Speaker 3: the state.
- 26:48Speaker 2: We're staying in the same hotel that a lot of
- 26:49Speaker 2: the Ravens alumni stayed in, and Helodi was the louven
- 26:52Speaker 2: and I spoke.
- 26:52Speaker 3: To Hellodi for the first time in my life.
- 26:55Speaker 2: So you know, I mean, it can't soften their retirement.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I mean, granted, it took twelve years for me to
- 27:01Speaker 2: get to that point.
- 27:01Speaker 3: But I got there, right, you know.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Sometimes, yeah, sometimes the path is more windy. I don't
- 27:07Speaker 2: know if I could do that with Terrell sucks. But
- 27:09Speaker 2: there's just some certain unforgivables that I just won't let
- 27:12Speaker 2: go of. And so you know, I look at that
- 27:16Speaker 2: and that's what makes that rival like I mean, I
- 27:18Speaker 2: could talk to David Pollock now this age and for
- 27:22Speaker 2: Seymour and Stroud when they were at Georgia, like I
- 27:24Speaker 2: went on a visit to Georgia, Like, Georgia was actually
- 27:27Speaker 2: my top five.
- 27:27Speaker 3: I really.
- 27:29Speaker 2: If Pat Watson, their offensive line coach, doesn't pass away
- 27:31Speaker 2: mid season, I probably would have been a Georgia Bulldog.
- 27:34Speaker 3: I'm being honest with it. I could say that.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Now, but I probably would have went to Georgia because
- 27:38Speaker 2: I love coach Watson. Like, their offensive line coach was amazing.
- 27:41Speaker 2: He was legendary and he got me. And that's the
- 27:45Speaker 2: biggest thing. When you're choosing a college. You want to
- 27:47Speaker 2: talk to coaches who get you. And you know, for that,
- 27:51Speaker 2: I can appreciate there's a respect there. I can talk
- 27:53Speaker 2: to bulldogs. I mean, heck, my oldest daughter's godmother is
- 27:57Speaker 2: a famous Georgia Bulldog gymnast, you know what I'm saying.
- 28:00Speaker 2: So so we have our moments once once once a year.
- 28:04Speaker 2: There's one week where we send each other crazy memes
- 28:07Speaker 2: and we just do crazy stuff to each other.
- 28:10Speaker 3: But there's there's a certain level of respect. Raven Steelers.
- 28:13Speaker 3: It's just old fashioned hate. It's just I don't like you.
- 28:17Speaker 2: I don't like I don't know if I could sit
- 28:20Speaker 2: down on a panel with Ray Lewis you know what
- 28:21Speaker 2: I'm saying, Like, like, that's what you've like Ed Reid.
- 28:24Speaker 2: I love Ed because I played against Ed and college
- 28:26Speaker 2: right played in Miami, Florida. Dude, I like Ed, But
- 28:30Speaker 2: when Ed had that jersey on, I tackled Ed and
- 28:33Speaker 2: I was trying to hurt Ed when I tackled him.
- 28:35Speaker 3: You know, granted I had to tackle that much, but
- 28:38Speaker 3: the fact that because he got a lot of interceptions.
- 28:40Speaker 2: But the fact that you know, there was a certain
- 28:42Speaker 2: level with it, so you're running the direction. Yeah, it
- 28:45Speaker 2: was running the other direction and praying I didn't get
- 28:47Speaker 2: blindsided by somebody else.
- 28:49Speaker 3: So I can only imagine bars Scott and I are
- 28:51Speaker 3: now in a good place.
- 28:52Speaker 2: But he went to the Jets and we had that
- 28:53Speaker 2: whole thing. And he's one of Willie Cologne's good buddies.
- 28:56Speaker 2: They work on sm ly together. So I've softened on Bart.
- 29:00Speaker 2: But yeah, but for the most part, in that jersey
- 29:03Speaker 2: at that time, Ah, it's tough.
- 29:05Speaker 3: It's tough.
- 29:06Speaker 4: I'll take your word for it because you have the
- 29:07Speaker 4: first experience.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Yeah, how was the body cam helmet cam version of
- 29:13Speaker 2: it right on.
- 29:14Speaker 4: From a fan perspective when I was younger. I'll never
- 29:18Speaker 4: forget this. I'll just tell you this quick story. We
- 29:20Speaker 4: can move on to current Steer stuff if you want.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Going to M and T Bank Stadium, I think it
- 29:24Speaker 4: was around two thousand, Max, so it was before you're
- 29:26Speaker 4: playing days with the Steelers. But went down there with
- 29:30Speaker 4: a couple buddies. I had a Jerome betis tersey on.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I went into M and T. You know, I'm like
- 29:34Speaker 4: nineteen twenty years old, so you know there's there's not
- 29:37Speaker 4: much skin in the game. I could care less, right, Yeah, Man,
- 29:39Speaker 4: did I get harassed the fans, But that I had
- 29:43Speaker 4: that bust jersey on, and I probably shouldn't have been
- 29:45Speaker 4: doing it. But I will say this, the Steers won
- 29:47Speaker 4: that game. That was the game which heinz Ward caught
- 29:49Speaker 4: a touchdown late in that game. The Steeers won like
- 29:51Speaker 4: nine to seven or something really low classic Raven steel Yeah, exactly,
- 29:54Speaker 4: even back then, and that was in fact. Here you go, Max,
- 29:57Speaker 4: I'll give you this little tidbit. That year two thousand,
- 30:00Speaker 4: the Ravens won the Super Bowl. That was their last
- 30:03Speaker 4: loss that season. And it was against the Steelers in Baltimore,
- 30:05Speaker 4: I believe, and after that they went on their run,
- 30:08Speaker 4: went on.
- 30:08Speaker 3: The Super Bowl.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Yeah so, I mean, and once again, you could appreciate
- 30:14Speaker 2: franchises that put the energy and the effort into their lines, right,
- 30:20Speaker 2: and you could argue that that defense for the Ravens,
- 30:23Speaker 2: but that offensive line was was no joke.
- 30:26Speaker 3: They were physical.
- 30:27Speaker 2: They just didn't have the quarterback to put the numbers
- 30:29Speaker 2: up to back up what those with the defense did.
- 30:32Speaker 2: But they had a heck of offense. I mean, Jonathan
- 30:34Speaker 2: Ogden was one of my idols growing up. I mean,
- 30:36Speaker 2: I loved j O and I wore the same numbers
- 30:38Speaker 2: JO and you know it was it was him, Pace,
- 30:42Speaker 2: Willie Rof. Those were my three guys, and those are
- 30:45Speaker 2: guys I wanted to be. Walter Jones was another one
- 30:47Speaker 2: in there, but those were the guys I look and
- 30:51Speaker 2: when you talk about hey, who's the prototype and everything,
- 30:53Speaker 2: I remember watching those guys, so I can have a
- 30:56Speaker 2: certain appreciation and respect for them. But when it came
- 30:59Speaker 2: to me being.
- 31:00Speaker 3: A Steeler playing the Ravens.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Zero love, zero love in that direction, it was all
- 31:06Speaker 2: the H word. And I didn't mind it because that's that. Listen,
- 31:10Speaker 2: if you find a chip manufactured or reality, whatever it
- 31:14Speaker 2: takes get the job done.
- 31:15Speaker 4: How about the kurrent Pittsburgh Steelers that we've seen up
- 31:18Speaker 4: here at training camp.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Now, I mean they've got they got a little vinegarrant them.
- 31:22Speaker 4: They got a little bit of that bite than when
- 31:23Speaker 4: they have to face Baltimore twice this upcoming.
- 31:25Speaker 2: See, I think Patrick Queen is being a former raven
- 31:28Speaker 2: as well, and you know it's there.
- 31:30Speaker 3: I once again the addition of the Landon Roberts.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I mean, e rob It's Dell one of those guys
- 31:35Speaker 2: that carries the good carries that a little now on
- 31:37Speaker 2: his crawl and the young guys will get inundated. I
- 31:40Speaker 2: think they're they're figuring out what this rivalry was and
- 31:42Speaker 2: what this rivalry is.
- 31:44Speaker 3: T J.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Watt definitely brings the barometer up when it comes to
- 31:46Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson. So does Cam Hayward. Like a lot of
- 31:49Speaker 2: guys still carry that tradition on. It's not what it
- 31:52Speaker 2: is what he used to be because obviously the game
- 31:55Speaker 2: everybody around us is elevated, so there's a lot more
- 31:57Speaker 2: competitive games and guys spread out due to free agency,
- 32:01Speaker 2: but it's still there.
- 32:01Speaker 3: The ethos is still there's still primetime football.
- 32:04Speaker 2: That's why they always put it at the last game
- 32:05Speaker 2: of the year and has a TVD next to it.
- 32:07Speaker 4: And Max. The Steelers have had a lot of success
- 32:09Speaker 4: against the Ravens. You know, normally when you're talking to
- 32:11Speaker 4: somebody and Tom the Labs were talking about this morning
- 32:14Speaker 4: as well on the Training Camp show. Is people say, oh, well,
- 32:19Speaker 4: the Steelers usually split with the Ravens. It's usually a split.
- 32:21Speaker 4: It hasn't been a split. The Steelers have done very
- 32:24Speaker 4: well against the Ravens the handful years, in fact, against
- 32:27Speaker 4: Lamar Jackson in particular. And I think it's because of
- 32:29Speaker 4: the speed of the linebackers, by the way that they've
- 32:32Speaker 4: built a lot of this defense in and around. But
- 32:33Speaker 4: they've done very well against the Ravens here recently.
- 32:36Speaker 2: It has it's been more brooms than not. Yeah, you
- 32:38Speaker 2: know when it comes to taking taking over the Ravens.
- 32:41Speaker 3: And I mean, but that's that's it's cyclical, right, It's cyclical.
- 32:45Speaker 2: One team gets on top of the other, the other
- 32:47Speaker 2: one gets their best shot the next year. But when
- 32:49Speaker 2: you look at the totality in a snapshot, right, take
- 32:52Speaker 2: a five year cross section, that's what you're really looking for,
- 32:55Speaker 2: because everybody's gonna have a hot year, everybody's gonna have
- 32:57Speaker 2: a down year.
- 32:58Speaker 3: But how does it look over a five year snapshot?
- 33:00Speaker 2: I look over a ten year snapshot, because I mean
- 33:02Speaker 2: I could say for myself, like when I go back
- 33:04Speaker 2: to college, like I beat Georgia all four times. Now,
- 33:07Speaker 2: if you said that the guys recently, where or when
- 33:11Speaker 2: no Georgia dominates this rivalry?
- 33:13Speaker 3: Right? I was like, there was a time when we.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Dominated and now we're now on the dominating side of it.
- 33:19Speaker 3: But that's just how it goes that when you have
- 33:21Speaker 3: long ingrained rivalries.
- 33:23Speaker 2: You see the the bell curve, right, the bell curve
- 33:28Speaker 2: shifts in many different ways.
- 33:30Speaker 3: The pendulum swings all the time.
- 33:31Speaker 2: But he had to look at the totality of it
- 33:33Speaker 2: and look at it more than just a one year
- 33:35Speaker 2: snapshot for this rivalry.
- 33:37Speaker 3: And it's a healthy rivalry because there is like you.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Said, the Steelers have gotten a lot of them. Well
- 33:41Speaker 2: there was years when the Ravens got a lot of
- 33:44Speaker 2: on the Steelers. So you know, I just know that.
- 33:46Speaker 2: And one particular snapshot, if we're going for just a
- 33:49Speaker 2: one year, look, we beat them three times, right, we
- 33:52Speaker 2: beat them three times in a row.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the ultimate. That's the big broom, that's not
- 33:55Speaker 3: the little broom. Yeah, that's hard to do.
- 33:57Speaker 4: To beat a football team three times.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Three times is tough work, right and so but the
- 34:02Speaker 2: fact that both of us got to the championship game
- 34:05Speaker 2: out of the same division, that's also a nod because
- 34:08Speaker 2: that just showed you where the level of play was
- 34:11Speaker 2: for our respective organizations.
- 34:13Speaker 4: And now Mike McCarthy will be introduced as a head
- 34:16Speaker 4: coach into that rivalry against.
- 34:18Speaker 2: He would have known it as the Browns Steelers rivalry
- 34:21Speaker 2: when growing up when he was growing up in Greenfield.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Now it is shifted down south to Crabcakes away from
- 34:27Speaker 2: Chipped Ham.
- 34:28Speaker 3: So, uh, you know, it's.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Gonna be fun to see how him and Jesse Mentor
- 34:33Speaker 2: start that new era of the Ravens Steelers' rivalry, to
- 34:38Speaker 2: see how it goes.
- 34:39Speaker 3: But you know, great job, And of course I can't wait.
- 34:42Speaker 2: But once again football is back and we we are
- 34:44Speaker 2: gonna be on a crash course for the for those
- 34:46Speaker 2: two matchups, So I can't wait, and we'll be here
- 34:49Speaker 2: all season four him, but we're gonna step aside because
- 34:52Speaker 2: we are well overdue for a break right now, and
- 34:54Speaker 2: we will get back to more in the final segment
- 34:57Speaker 2: here inside the locker room from Saint Vincent's Steelers Training.
- 35:01Speaker 3: Camp twenty twenty six.
- 35:02Speaker 2: You can hear it live and of course on replay
- 35:05Speaker 2: on the Steelers Audio Network and Steelers Nation Radio.
- 35:09Speaker 1: This is live coverage of twenty twenty six Steelers Training

- 35:50Speaker 1: Union Number three. We don't go to the office, we
- 35:53Speaker 1: build it.
- 35:57Speaker 2: This is and we're not in season four, so I
- 36:00Speaker 2: can't really call it fully, but justin you know what
- 36:04Speaker 2: time it is when it gets to the last segment,
- 36:06Speaker 2: and I'm not expecting you to have the most glorious
- 36:09Speaker 2: bells of all time.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Because it is not lunchtime anymore. But we are still
- 36:13Speaker 3: in the bell lap here inside the locker room. Yeah, yeah,
- 36:17Speaker 3: there we go.
- 36:18Speaker 2: I was trying to tease it up, make sure I
- 36:19Speaker 2: gave him enough time to find it in the bed.
- 36:21Speaker 3: There we go. That's my guy, Jay.
- 36:24Speaker 2: But yes, we are in the bell lap here inside
- 36:26Speaker 2: the locker room. Final segment, And you know, it's fun
- 36:31Speaker 2: to get into these moments.
- 36:33Speaker 3: You know, we're ending training camp.
- 36:34Speaker 2: We have one more full padded public practice out here
- 36:37Speaker 2: tomorrow at eleven am, bright and early. Don't know how
- 36:41Speaker 2: the way, I think the weather will fare a little
- 36:43Speaker 2: bit better. Actually, the sky's clearing up from when we
- 36:45Speaker 2: started to show. It's over two hours. I mean it's
- 36:47Speaker 2: gotten really nice. It's now the fluffy clouds still not
- 36:50Speaker 2: allow of sunshine, but still fluffy clouds, not great clouds,
- 36:53Speaker 2: but as we kind of barrel down.
- 36:55Speaker 3: This is kind of the passion that we're talking about.
- 36:57Speaker 3: This is the build up to the regular season. We
- 37:00Speaker 3: have games.
- 37:01Speaker 2: We have physical, competitive, eleven on eleven football happening inside
- 37:05Speaker 2: the stadiums across this beautiful country, and the competition is there.
- 37:10Speaker 2: We're figuring out who are going to be the Steelers.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Right now, we have a collection of men vying for
- 37:18Speaker 2: that sticker on only one side of your helmet, as
- 37:20Speaker 2: we know in Steelers history and lore, But you're fighting
- 37:23Speaker 2: for that opportunity out here. This is the forge, This
- 37:27Speaker 2: is the battleground that creates steel and it creates Steelers
- 37:32Speaker 2: and what this twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven team
- 37:35Speaker 2: is going to be.
- 37:37Speaker 3: And from where we're at right now.
- 37:40Speaker 2: It looks like all that molten type of metal is
- 37:44Speaker 2: starting to get into the cast and we're starting to
- 37:46Speaker 2: form it and start to build the bones and the
- 37:49Speaker 2: structure and the foundation of what we can come to
- 37:52Speaker 2: expect here for this year's team.
- 37:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it's hard to believe, Max, but we are right
- 37:56Speaker 4: around the corner from getting to that point where you're
- 38:00Speaker 4: going to separate the men from the boys and the
- 38:01Speaker 4: boys from the men, right to get to that fifty
- 38:03Speaker 4: three man roster cut down day coming up here at
- 38:07Speaker 4: the end of August of the August thirtieth, Actually they
- 38:09Speaker 4: got to get down to the fifty three and then
- 38:11Speaker 4: they have the sixteen to the practice squad as well.
- 38:14Speaker 4: But yeah, it feels good, and you know, I guess
- 38:16Speaker 4: from your perspective too, did you look forward to finally
- 38:19Speaker 4: breaking camp here at Saint Vincent and getting back into
- 38:22Speaker 4: the city. I mean you spend I mean you figure
- 38:24Speaker 4: by this Tuesday, when they break camp, that'll be three
- 38:26Speaker 4: full weeks that they've been here at Saint Vincent.
- 38:27Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you're looking forward to it.
- 38:29Speaker 2: I mean, you know, listening four concrete walls can only
- 38:31Speaker 2: be fun for so long, right, Roommate and sharing a
- 38:34Speaker 2: bathroom with another male can only be so much fun
- 38:37Speaker 2: over time, Like, Okay, who put.
- 38:39Speaker 3: The towel down? Who didn't flush the toilet? You know,
- 38:41Speaker 3: you can get into all of that. But I think
- 38:43Speaker 3: also this is.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Very important for the nucleus to be in this environment,
- 38:51Speaker 2: Like I think, you know, I would rather have this
- 38:54Speaker 2: kind of three three and a half week period together
- 38:58Speaker 2: than to do it at a training facility and go
- 39:00Speaker 2: home every night. Right, Like we see a lot of
- 39:02Speaker 2: different programs, a lot of different organizations do. But after
- 39:07Speaker 2: a while, yeah, you get tired of seeing the same
- 39:09Speaker 2: faces and you just need a little change up, a
- 39:11Speaker 2: little change of venue. You need some me time, right,
- 39:15Speaker 2: It's not you, it's me. I need some time to
- 39:17Speaker 2: myself and you can't really hide here. And I think
- 39:19Speaker 2: that's important for building a team, for the bonding. But
- 39:22Speaker 2: I think the bonding is important, but it has a
- 39:25Speaker 2: certain shelf life before it becomes annoyance.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Right. It's just like when you grew up with your siblings.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Right, you know, I mean, I don't know, you know,
- 39:32Speaker 2: you probably didn't have to share a room since you
- 39:34Speaker 2: had had a lot of sisters. Yeah, but I had brothers,
- 39:37Speaker 2: so I had to share rooms. And so you know
- 39:40Speaker 2: that day when you could get your own room, man,
- 39:42Speaker 2: that was that was That was a glorious day. That
- 39:44Speaker 2: was a glorious day. Like, listen, I don't have to
- 39:47Speaker 2: deal with bunk beds. I don't have to deal with
- 39:49Speaker 2: somebody waking up in the middle of the night like
- 39:50Speaker 2: it's only me and I get my silence and a
- 39:53Speaker 2: lot of those things.
- 39:54Speaker 3: So that's where you're at right now.
- 39:55Speaker 2: You're like, you can't wait to get your own room
- 39:57Speaker 2: and get back to the creature comforts of your own home,
- 39:59Speaker 2: your families.
- 40:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:01Speaker 2: You know, guys, a lot of guys have wives, have children.
- 40:04Speaker 2: You know, they have significant others and spouses, and you
- 40:06Speaker 2: want to just get back to that because you know
- 40:09Speaker 2: they're they're also a very big part.
- 40:11Speaker 3: I don't think he gets talked about enough of your
- 40:13Speaker 3: support system.
- 40:15Speaker 2: You've got to have that unbiased ear, that non involved
- 40:19Speaker 2: ear every once in a while, and it's good to
- 40:21Speaker 2: have it on the phone. And now with technology, you
- 40:23Speaker 2: got face times that you can do those type of things.
- 40:25Speaker 2: But something about physically being with that person, it's a
- 40:28Speaker 2: huge difference. Yeah, it's a huge difference. And you know,
- 40:31Speaker 2: we're pack animals, we're packed beings, right, so we're used
- 40:34Speaker 2: to companionship. So it's good to just get back to
- 40:37Speaker 2: that and just allow you to kind of refocus your
- 40:40Speaker 2: energy and everything else. So I love the time, but yeah,
- 40:44Speaker 2: I think three and a half weeks is about the limit.
- 40:47Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not going backpacking through Europe trying to
- 40:49Speaker 2: find myself.
- 40:50Speaker 3: You know.
- 40:50Speaker 2: It's like I already have a life, a career path
- 40:53Speaker 2: at everything else.
- 40:54Speaker 3: So let's just get back into the systems so that I.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Can get into my routine faster to get ready for
- 40:59Speaker 2: the sea because it is grueling and it is long.
- 41:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I couldn't imagine for the players of the coaches
- 41:03Speaker 4: coming up here, you know after the preseason game, because
- 41:06Speaker 4: I know for me, when I was coming back up
- 41:07Speaker 4: to campus yesterday. And I love Saint Vincent, I love
- 41:10Speaker 4: everything about this experience. But I don't want to say
- 41:12Speaker 4: I was over at Max, but I was kind of
- 41:14Speaker 4: over it. After sitting with you guys at Actor Shore
- 41:16Speaker 4: last Thursday, I was ready for the real stuff we're here,
- 41:19Speaker 4: Not that this isn't the real stuff, but it's training camps.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Well listen, I lived like twenty five hundred miles away,
- 41:25Speaker 2: that's right, So I was one of those guys. I
- 41:26Speaker 2: had to go straight back to training camp right after
- 41:28Speaker 2: the game. And yeah, it was Friday was a very
- 41:30Speaker 2: lonely place.
- 41:32Speaker 3: You know, I've been walk around.
- 41:34Speaker 2: You're like one of these if you guys are on campus, just.
- 41:38Speaker 3: All this green and grass and the snow guys.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, me and Phil, you know, trying to just
- 41:44Speaker 2: have contact with another human being and have a conversation.
- 41:48Speaker 2: But there's a there's a necessity behind it. And I
- 41:52Speaker 2: think when you think about the historical significance of this place,
- 41:56Speaker 2: we know that no Super Bowl team that the Steelers
- 41:59Speaker 2: have ever fielded never.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Not started here.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yep, came through here, had to come through here. So
- 42:05Speaker 2: it's it's a rite of passage on an annual basis.
- 42:08Speaker 2: It's a pilgrimage site for fans. It's a place of
- 42:13Speaker 2: statistical and historical significance about who you're going to be
- 42:18Speaker 2: these hallowed grounds.
- 42:20Speaker 3: Who are you.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Going to be for the twenty twenty six twenty twenty
- 42:23Speaker 2: seven season, and how are you going to write your
- 42:26Speaker 2: own chapter? The pen and the paper meet here to
- 42:31Speaker 2: start that journey. And that's what I love about being
- 42:34Speaker 2: up here because I remember where I was at at
- 42:37Speaker 2: different points on this field. When I look on this field,
- 42:39Speaker 2: I remember my very first one on one in the
- 42:41Speaker 2: end zone on field number two by the goal post
- 42:45Speaker 2: with with the lines drawn, going up against Joey Porter.
- 42:49Speaker 2: I remember going up against Clark Hagen's in those moments,
- 42:52Speaker 2: Chemo von Ohoffen, Aaron Smith, a young Brett Keisel that
- 42:55Speaker 2: was just a special teams guy before he became the Beard.
- 42:59Speaker 2: He was just ninety nine. Yeah, you know, I remember
- 43:02Speaker 2: these moments and they're so special to be able to
- 43:04Speaker 2: relive those moments in your mind and see what the
- 43:06Speaker 2: next generation looks like, see what the next iteration is.
- 43:09Speaker 2: You know, who's the next Who's going to be the
- 43:10Speaker 2: next Brett Keisel on this team? Who's going to be
- 43:13Speaker 2: the next Casey Hampton, Who's going to be the next
- 43:15Speaker 2: Ben Roethlisberger, the next hins Ward, Troy Polam. You get
- 43:20Speaker 2: to see all of that, and I get to live
- 43:22Speaker 2: it because I'm replaying and overlaying my own experience with
- 43:26Speaker 2: watching these new guys.
- 43:27Speaker 3: It's a cool thing to do here and something that
- 43:30Speaker 3: very rarely gets done around this league.
- 43:31Speaker 4: And I was gonna say, it has to come full
- 43:33Speaker 4: circle for you too, Max, because of what you just described,
- 43:35Speaker 4: and not a lot of guys have been in your
- 43:37Speaker 4: spot up here is on on the media side, the
- 43:39Speaker 4: broadcasting side, with your team that you played for, that
- 43:42Speaker 4: you won super Bowl titles with, but you all but
- 43:44Speaker 4: you what you? I go back to exactly what you
- 43:46Speaker 4: just said. It all started right here on these practice fields.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Eight super Bowl appearances for the franchise, six wins, and
- 43:53Speaker 4: all eight of those Super Bowl teams started right here
- 43:56Speaker 4: on these grass fields.
- 43:57Speaker 2: It's a beautiful place to forge. This is the forge man,
- 44:00Speaker 2: the forge. This is like it, This is the foundry.
- 44:02Speaker 2: This is where it all starts. It's like, well, well
- 44:05Speaker 2: I take all these elements and now I start to
- 44:06Speaker 2: make liquid molten steel, and then I put it in
- 44:09Speaker 2: the I hit the cast and at the cast gout
- 44:13Speaker 2: and it's go time. I need to start putting these
- 44:15Speaker 2: steel girders out, baby, so we can build what is
- 44:18Speaker 2: what we hope to be a successful campaign for twenty
- 44:21Speaker 2: twenty six, twenty twenty seven. And uh, I'm glad that
- 44:24Speaker 2: you got to fill in here and once again we've
