- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Paul is on his annual Loser Palooza floor and he
- 0:22Speaker 2: and his friends get together and I guess they drink
- 0:25Speaker 2: beer and eat a lot and they watch college basketball
- 0:28Speaker 2: first Round.
- 0:28Speaker 3: He takes tomorrow off too, right, deal with the hangover.
- 0:32Speaker 2: They're just losers and they love Alex from Lunenburg. When
- 0:35Speaker 2: there are five people with studio, Fred looks like a hobbit.
- 0:39Speaker 4: He seems like he's doing great. Yeah, that's great, but
- 0:41Speaker 4: you know, handsome is.
- 0:42Speaker 5: Ever when you were in school, like we used to,
- 0:44Speaker 5: like during lunch or something, there's always that cool teacher
- 0:46Speaker 5: would let you come in and like watch like the
- 0:49Speaker 5: basketball games.
- 0:50Speaker 6: Well, oh yeah, never.
- 0:52Speaker 4: The Bruins were in the Stanley Cup in twenty eleven
- 0:54Speaker 4: and it was the finals, and she gave everyone an
- 0:57Speaker 4: extra week to do a project that was due the
- 0:59Speaker 4: next day, soever to watch the Stanley Cup. We got
- 1:01Speaker 4: to watch the Challenger blow up. Wow, I remember watching
- 1:05Speaker 4: on TV and school.
- 1:07Speaker 5: Oh my god, we.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Going Freso says I'm the one that recommended healthy sleep.
- 1:12Speaker 3: And we'll take all the credit or blame because.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Like I got to bring it in for us and
- 1:16Speaker 4: show us, like.
- 1:17Speaker 3: The take a picture. I'm not going to bring my
- 1:18Speaker 3: pillow up.
- 1:19Speaker 1: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Presented by Toyota's official website for deals by a Toyota
- 1:25Speaker 4: dot com.
- 1:27Speaker 2: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday here
- 1:31Speaker 2: at you Let's stadium. I don't know about where you
- 1:34Speaker 2: guys live, but I can't decide if it's spring or
- 1:37Speaker 2: still winter around here.
- 1:38Speaker 4: It was snowing like the Dickens where I lived this morning.
- 1:41Speaker 4: We didn't get the dickens, but we got a coating that.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Was I mean, it didn't amount to much, but it
- 1:46Speaker 3: was coming out.
- 1:46Speaker 4: I was there, it was there.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, come on different what what we live? I
- 1:52Speaker 5: feel like we looked different today. Did they did they
- 1:55Speaker 5: do something with the cameras?
- 1:56Speaker 3: I don't know. Yeh, I guess they did. They worked
- 1:57Speaker 3: hard at it.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yes, the cameras were fixed.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah okay, yeah, all right, I'm still a hobbit, but
- 2:02Speaker 2: that's okay, that's okay.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Hobbits are good.
- 2:05Speaker 4: I like I'm Morgan.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Moses are you, Bilbo, I'd rather look like a hobbit
- 2:09Speaker 3: than an orc.
- 2:10Speaker 2: It's true for you, Lord of the Rings fans, Paul,
- 2:13Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Uh so what do we got?
- 2:16Speaker 3: We got?
- 2:17Speaker 2: We got some minor signings, a little movement, a little scuttle,
- 2:21Speaker 2: but what what are we talking about?
- 2:22Speaker 4: Josh Dobbs got released.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Josh Dobbs.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, So like they were said, they were trying
- 2:27Speaker 4: to trade him. I guess that was what the tweet
- 2:28Speaker 4: said from rap sheet NASA wouldn't bite and I guess
- 2:31Speaker 4: not the pastor not is no more, but Tommy DeVito
- 2:35Speaker 4: with a two year deal, so I guess he's maybe
- 2:37Speaker 4: the backup. And of course we already did our quarterback
- 2:40Speaker 4: episode of the draft countdown, so we didn't really die.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Maybe we could have dove in a little deeper on
- 2:45Speaker 4: some of those ladies.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And I think we talked a little bit about DeVito
- 2:49Speaker 1: signing a two year deal, which kind of indicated that
- 2:52Speaker 1: they had plans for him to be the backup. So
- 2:55Speaker 1: maybe you're looking for more of a developmental guy behind him,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and adn't Dobs at the time.
- 3:02Speaker 2: With all the picks they had, they can certainly afford
- 3:04Speaker 2: to draft a quarterback.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, especially you know, four in the sixth round,
- 3:09Speaker 5: Like one of those guys ends up being a quarterback.
- 3:11Speaker 5: But there are a couple of like fun, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 5: Haines King types that are you know, probably not going
- 3:19Speaker 5: to be starters, but guys that have really good athletic traits.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You know, guys that like Taysom Hill friends.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, something like that, Like you like that he
- 3:27Speaker 5: ran a sub four or five, had fifteen rushing touchdowns
- 3:31Speaker 5: last year. Like he's a dual threat quarterback that could
- 3:34Speaker 5: either play quarterback or maybe play you know, a receiver
- 3:37Speaker 5: position as well if that doesn't pan out.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Uh.
- 3:40Speaker 5: But then there's also like the do you go for
- 3:43Speaker 5: the career backup type, Like do you draft a guy
- 3:45Speaker 5: that's just going to be a backup in the league
- 3:47Speaker 5: for the next ten years that sort of thing as well.
- 3:49Speaker 5: So it's interesting which way they go there, knowing obviously
- 3:53Speaker 5: that the starting quarterback position is is taken care of.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yep, yeah. A couple of backups to James Hudson
- 4:00Speaker 4: signed yesterday was with the Giants last year.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Left tackle depth, swing tackling tackle depth.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I did catch that. He gave out what he
- 4:07Speaker 4: had four straight penalties is making a round that made
- 4:11Speaker 4: video that made my timeline. But it is a lot
- 4:15Speaker 4: of one for one signings. Guys left, guys signed. You know,
- 4:18Speaker 4: Vaderian Low left. You say you signed James Hudson. You
- 4:20Speaker 4: can pretty much go right down the list of everybody.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Well, yeah, but I don't want people to think that
- 4:25Speaker 2: this guy's going to replace Low as the right Well
- 4:29Speaker 2: he could, he could, but I don't know.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I think he's got more career starts I think than
- 4:35Speaker 1: Vaderia Low does.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean Darien started a lot of games in
- 4:41Speaker 5: twenty four by necessity, but.
- 4:44Speaker 4: He had four starts last year. But just again, I
- 4:46Speaker 4: think gives you a baseline. But I still think we
- 4:48Speaker 4: all agree would love to get a developmental tackle this year.
- 4:52Speaker 4: How does it all work out? Sometime in day two,
- 4:54Speaker 4: maybe you get a guy who could maybe step in
- 4:57Speaker 4: for Morgan Moses next year, or maybe just a guy
- 4:59Speaker 4: that you good about because we said many times they
- 5:02Speaker 4: did so much to manage Morgan Moses throughout camp and
- 5:06Speaker 4: it worked out great. You got them the whole season.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Can they do that again?
- 5:10Speaker 3: You know?
- 5:10Speaker 4: I think they need some protection there.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Okay, it's a tough you know, been going through a
- 5:15Speaker 5: lot of these tackles. It's it's a pretty pretty steep
- 5:18Speaker 5: drop off after the top five or six guys, uh,
- 5:23Speaker 5: to the point where we might see a handful of
- 5:26Speaker 5: guys go in the top forty and then nobody go
- 5:28Speaker 5: for like sixty picks after that.
- 5:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 5:31Speaker 6: So it's not.
- 5:33Speaker 5: If you're drafting thinking this is gonna be our third tackle,
- 5:37Speaker 5: our swing tackle of the future. I feel like, okay,
- 5:40Speaker 5: there's probably some guys in the third or fourth round
- 5:42Speaker 5: that fit that bill. If you're drafting thinking that they're
- 5:44Speaker 5: gonna be Morgan Moses's successor at ninety five or one
- 5:49Speaker 5: twenty five or something like that, I think you're gonna be.
- 5:54Speaker 6: In a tougher spot, I would put it to you.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I Mean, that's way probably why you see tackle pop
- 5:57Speaker 4: up with some of these mock drafts. You know, some
- 5:59Speaker 4: people go the tackle route.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Yeah, if you want to get the air of the
- 6:03Speaker 5: successor to Moses, you kind of got to do it
- 6:06Speaker 5: at thirty one. Yeah, And I'm not crazy about that idea,
- 6:09Speaker 5: but just looking at these guys, you know, I was
- 6:11Speaker 5: at Boston College yesterday and you know, Jude Barry is
- 6:14Speaker 5: one of those guys there. Left tackle pretty athletic kid,
- 6:18Speaker 5: you know, looks the part all that stuff, but you
- 6:21Speaker 5: know he's probably more fringe starter, top backup type of
- 6:26Speaker 5: player and not necessarily somebody that you think is going
- 6:28Speaker 5: to be a long term answer.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Okay, so we got that and some NFL news yesterday,
- 6:34Speaker 2: JSN getting a big deal now the highest paid wide
- 6:38Speaker 2: receiver in the league.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Good for him. Yeah, he's a great player. I mean
- 6:42Speaker 4: it was fun getting to watch a lot of him
- 6:45Speaker 4: when you were getting in the build up to the
- 6:47Speaker 4: super Bowl and just what an outstanding season.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I mean, he's It always sticks in my head.
- 6:50Speaker 4: I mean I think it was Evan that said it,
- 6:52Speaker 4: and I think I saw a clip of it today
- 6:54Speaker 4: with Garrett Wilson back at Ohio State saying, this kid's
- 6:57Speaker 4: the best one, like when he was you know, still
- 6:59Speaker 4: just think like eighteen nineteen years old at Ohio State, and.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I just then I find this with the draft too.
- 7:04Speaker 4: I sent Paul a couple guys like I like finding
- 7:06Speaker 4: guys that are unique, even though they might not ever
- 7:08Speaker 4: be superstars in the NFL. But JSN is a unique superstar.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Like just the way he runs and everything just looks
- 7:15Speaker 4: the same. There's no tempo in and out of his
- 7:17Speaker 4: cuts or brakes or anything. It's just everything looks the same,
- 7:20Speaker 4: and it's a it's you know, he's unique in special athleticism.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Yeah, Nikup is another one that is just different.
- 7:27Speaker 4: I was thinking about who would I take over, you know,
- 7:28Speaker 4: like if I had to pick between those two, and
- 7:30Speaker 4: I I think I might just go JSN just because
- 7:33Speaker 4: I think he's a little bit more smooth. I feel
- 7:35Speaker 4: like Niku is gonna have a short career because he
- 7:36Speaker 4: just takes such a beating.
- 7:37Speaker 1: See I couldn't agree more.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I would.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I would take JSN. Not because I think he's any
- 7:42Speaker 1: better right now, but I think he'll hold up longer.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Yeah, do I agree with you?
- 7:46Speaker 5: He separates better like Pukah's awesome to catch guy, Yeah, yeah,
- 7:50Speaker 5: great head boxing now more like Deebo Samuel was maybe
- 7:54Speaker 5: yeah a little bit yeah, and you know, great catch
- 7:56Speaker 5: and run guy obviously agree with the ball in his hands,
- 7:58Speaker 5: where JSN is just an assassin, you know, just smooth
- 8:02Speaker 5: and fishing and catches the ball well and just doesn't
- 8:06Speaker 5: look like he's moving too fast but he's still moving
- 8:09Speaker 5: fast enough, and you know all that kind of stuff.
- 8:11Speaker 5: It seems like that game is gonna age like fine wine,
- 8:14Speaker 5: like he'll be playing ten years from now kind of
- 8:16Speaker 5: like digs.
- 8:16Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, and still be doing it.
- 8:18Speaker 4: There was a couple times in the Super Bowl from
- 8:20Speaker 4: my all twenty two seats up there in the three hundreds,
- 8:23Speaker 4: four hundreds, but a couple of Gonzales like pass breakups
- 8:27Speaker 4: on him, like you could just see like, oh, you know,
- 8:29Speaker 4: especially from that high up when he would get ahead
- 8:32Speaker 4: of steam going and I mean, great super Bowl by Gonzales.
- 8:35Speaker 4: But you can see they were smart to sign him
- 8:37Speaker 4: now because now the price is only going up. Yeah
- 8:40Speaker 4: for Nikola.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're gonna find that in a couple
- 8:43Speaker 2: of years, it'll be a deal.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Yeah he paid him, yep.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 5: It's a good lesson this time of year or two,
- 8:49Speaker 5: Like doesn't have to be the fastest guy, like JSN
- 8:52Speaker 5: was not a burner, did not run a great time
- 8:56Speaker 5: in the forty yard dash, neither did Puka. And these
- 8:58Speaker 5: two guys are the best receivers in football as like
- 9:01Speaker 5: four or five guys. You know, in this time of year,
- 9:04Speaker 5: we always talk about the testing and all that kind
- 9:06Speaker 5: of stuff, and all the guys that are run in
- 9:08Speaker 5: the four threes there everybody gets all obsessed with and
- 9:11Speaker 5: then it's a player like JSN who ends up being,
- 9:14Speaker 5: you know, the best receiver in the league at modest
- 9:16Speaker 5: athletic testing because of the route detail.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Anybody watched the flag football game of the Week, I did,
- 9:22Speaker 2: all right, so I didn't watch the whole thing.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I like the one.
- 9:26Speaker 4: It was hilarious. You did watch, I told Paul, I
- 9:30Speaker 4: thought it was the most It was one of the
- 9:31Speaker 4: funniest things I've watched. First of all, they're pumping up
- 9:34Speaker 4: Brady like I mean, they are. The announcers are talking
- 9:36Speaker 4: about Brady. And I came into it. The other team
- 9:39Speaker 4: had just gotten their asses handed them by the USA
- 9:41Speaker 4: Flag team, which you know, it's like, oh, maybe maybe
- 9:44Speaker 4: there is something different about flag.
- 9:46Speaker 1: But Brady walks in with like.
- 9:47Speaker 4: His blades on. It's like the start of the Super Bowl.
- 9:51Speaker 4: He is like so serious about everything.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Like can I get a ball and you can warm up,
- 9:55Speaker 1: you know, And I'm.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Like, they're about to get their asses handed and by
- 9:57Speaker 4: this flag football team and Brady's acting like this is
- 9:59Speaker 4: like Super bowls sixty one.
- 10:01Speaker 1: But my favorite part was and he had a dime.
- 10:03Speaker 4: He had a dime, and it was it was you know,
- 10:05Speaker 4: cool to watch him throw to Steffan Diggs, which was
- 10:07Speaker 4: kind of weird. But like the other thing that cracked
- 10:09Speaker 4: me up was like they're flighting football players, right, So
- 10:11Speaker 4: you got Sean Payton, Like, we got Sean Payton miked up,
- 10:13Speaker 4: like all right, you know, he's what's the play call
- 10:15Speaker 4: going to be? And so there was either like regular
- 10:17Speaker 4: or there was another thing where they would do two quarterbacks,
- 10:20Speaker 4: so they'll literally be like Sean Payton like all right, right, right,
- 10:23Speaker 4: let's go regular seven seven, and everyone just shoven.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It's seven, you know, is everybody screaming seven? Brady's just shoven,
- 10:31Speaker 1: you know, all locked in.
- 10:33Speaker 4: And then they go against these five football guys and
- 10:35Speaker 4: it's like they can't tackle him because these guys are
- 10:36Speaker 4: like dropping their hips to the ground and wiggling through everybody,
- 10:39Speaker 4: and you know, I just I thought it was hilarious
- 10:41Speaker 4: how serious Brady was taking it, which I expected nothing
- 10:44Speaker 4: less and like, but the one more comment on it, though,
- 10:46Speaker 4: is it so they're pumping up Brady like all they're
- 10:48Speaker 4: talking about is Tom Brady and then they're like and
- 10:51Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts will be out there right now. I'm like,
- 10:52Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts is playing like he's out there starting, like
- 10:55Speaker 4: Brady's not even starting. All they're talking about is Tom Brady,
- 10:57Speaker 4: which just makes me think it's like a fox thing
- 10:59Speaker 4: and they just gotta put I'm like this, Jalen HTSI
- 11:01Speaker 4: won the quarterback you went in the Super Bowl two
- 11:03Speaker 4: years ago, and no one's even the other Jalen Hurts
- 11:06Speaker 4: is out there right now. Back to Brady, though, I mean,
- 11:08Speaker 4: he looks really intense, doesn't he. Like that's all they
- 11:10Speaker 4: were focused on. So I got I got about a
- 11:12Speaker 4: half hour of like pure laughter at him. My wife's like,
- 11:14Speaker 4: what are you laughing at him?
- 11:15Speaker 3: There?
- 11:15Speaker 4: I'm like this flag football thing is hilarious. And then
- 11:18Speaker 4: no one can stop the flag football guys. Like that
- 11:20Speaker 4: was the best part of it. Was like this guy
- 11:21Speaker 4: can barely even throw a football. Half the guys are
- 11:24Speaker 4: like five mins, you know, like they.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Had the excuse that, you know, we just learned how
- 11:27Speaker 2: to you know, take flags off two days.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Well, And that was another part of it, was like
- 11:31Speaker 4: Brady's flag fell out at one point, and although flag
- 11:34Speaker 4: guys are pointing and that's the penalty's you know, and
- 11:36Speaker 4: so it's all this nuance to the flag football game.
- 11:38Speaker 1: That no one wanted to talk about.
- 11:40Speaker 3: And I thought the football.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Is nothing more than ultimate frisbee with more stoppage of play.
- 11:44Speaker 3: That's all it is.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Idn't possibly agree more pretty much.
- 11:47Speaker 5: I had a tough time with it, like the whole
- 11:51Speaker 5: dropping your dropping your hips and your butt to the
- 11:54Speaker 5: ground to like dodge tack, like there's just not and.
- 11:56Speaker 4: There's no ball security, there's no fumbles because you know
- 11:59Speaker 4: what I mean.
- 11:59Speaker 5: So they were just like that part of it to
- 12:02Speaker 5: me really was like like you can touch the ground
- 12:05Speaker 5: and as long as your flag doesn't get pulled, you're
- 12:07Speaker 5: not down. And I was like, this is just not
- 12:10Speaker 5: this isn't even trying to be.
- 12:11Speaker 1: The place we're dead. If a guy went down in.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Our league, at least a knee down, maybe.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Yeah, if you if you went down to play, the
- 12:17Speaker 1: whistle would.
- 12:18Speaker 6: Be not in this one.
- 12:19Speaker 5: I saw one guy that that definitely hit the ground
- 12:22Speaker 5: and he was like bobbing and weaving around.
- 12:24Speaker 6: Guys, I'm not trying it, you know.
- 12:26Speaker 1: It is a lot different than Paul, like, you know.
- 12:27Speaker 4: The thing I noticed was that they because in our
- 12:29Speaker 4: flag football for kids, it was you can only blitz
- 12:31Speaker 4: like yeah, like three liszes per half, but this one
- 12:34Speaker 4: every single time, the guy just comes screaming in at
- 12:36Speaker 4: mock two. So, I mean, you gotta have some short routes.
- 12:39Speaker 4: And I was saying to Paul, I think part of
- 12:40Speaker 4: like the NFL guys screwing up was like they're running
- 12:43Speaker 4: all these NFL route combinations and like the other guys,
- 12:46Speaker 4: they've got all these little underneath things because they know
- 12:49Speaker 4: there's just every time you're gonna have a gun.
- 12:50Speaker 1: But he wasn't as good one. He didn't know what
- 12:52Speaker 1: the defense was doing. Yeah, you had one night.
- 12:55Speaker 4: So but the funny it was when before Gronk got hurt,
- 12:57Speaker 4: like Gronk like catches the two pointer and then he
- 13:00Speaker 4: like you could tell any tweet something and then they
- 13:03Speaker 4: had Gronk micd up on it and it was just
- 13:04Speaker 4: perfect Gronk.
- 13:05Speaker 1: He was like, well, I mean.
- 13:06Speaker 4: You know, at least we got to like connect on
- 13:08Speaker 4: a pass like that's pretty good, right, Like that, you know,
- 13:11Speaker 4: like at least we got to have like, you know,
- 13:13Speaker 4: two point.
- 13:13Speaker 1: That was pretty awesome, right.
- 13:16Speaker 5: Definitely inspired a big debate about the twenty twenty eight Olympics,
- 13:20Speaker 5: and like the US professional flag team is clearly a
- 13:24Speaker 5: lot better right now.
- 13:25Speaker 1: He scored every time. Yeah, every time they had the
- 13:27Speaker 1: ball they scored.
- 13:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Now I louke like running for his life trying to
- 13:31Speaker 4: catch this guy.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Like if they like stopped playing football for the NFL
- 13:36Speaker 5: in January and a team of you of NFL players
- 13:40Speaker 5: dedicated the next five months to learning the game of
- 13:43Speaker 5: flag football and how to play it, like with how
- 13:46Speaker 5: much could they catch up in those five months? And
- 13:49Speaker 5: then also like I think it isn't like kind of
- 13:51Speaker 5: fun to talk about like which players would translate best, right,
- 13:54Speaker 5: because like the guys that the receivers that win at
- 13:58Speaker 5: the catch point and stuff like that are like these
- 14:00Speaker 5: you know, physical contested catch guys, Like that's not flag.
- 14:05Speaker 5: That's not going to help you. But like if you
- 14:07Speaker 5: put together a team of like I no, I don't
- 14:11Speaker 5: think he would translate well, Like I think you need
- 14:14Speaker 5: Marcus Jones, Z Flowers, Pop Douglas, like these little jitterbugs
- 14:19Speaker 5: as players, I think to them too slow, Like I
- 14:23Speaker 5: think you need like you.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Know, there isn't it the easier to get the flag off?
- 14:28Speaker 5: I don't know about that, but like in the NFL,
- 14:30Speaker 5: everything's about physicality, body positioning, like winning the football down
- 14:35Speaker 5: the field, like none of that applies here, Like this
- 14:38Speaker 5: is all about it's not.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Football, and I can't stand it being marketed as a
- 14:43Speaker 2: way to get people playing football without the concussions.
- 14:47Speaker 3: It's just so ridiculous, you know.
- 14:50Speaker 5: I would say though, that like the the for lack
- 14:54Speaker 5: of a better phrase, the ball skills would do translate,
- 14:58Speaker 5: like the ability to catch the football, work the sidelines,
- 15:01Speaker 5: like all those different types of things I think nowadays,
- 15:04Speaker 5: like the reason why there's always twenty five receivers that
- 15:07Speaker 5: are decent players in the draft every year is because
- 15:10Speaker 5: these kids are playing, you know, from a very young age.
- 15:13Speaker 5: They're they're learning how to throw and catch and you know,
- 15:17Speaker 5: control their bodies and things like that. But in terms
- 15:19Speaker 5: of like the actual physicality part of it, it's just
- 15:22Speaker 5: it's just nothing like it.
- 15:23Speaker 3: No, So that was going on.
- 15:25Speaker 4: It was going on.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Yeah, so that happened.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Yeah, it was fine.
- 15:29Speaker 5: I can't believe how much my timeline was about like
- 15:32Speaker 5: during March madness too, Like there's a there's better sports
- 15:35Speaker 5: on and like my timeline was all Brady's one throw.
- 15:39Speaker 5: It's the fon digs that everybody was going crazy about.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah I did.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I didn't.
- 15:43Speaker 4: I didn't like to think you constantly have a free
- 15:45Speaker 4: rusher every single snap there's just a free rusher running
- 15:48Speaker 4: right at you, and that I don't know, that screwed
- 15:50Speaker 4: up the rhythm of it for me. I don't know
- 15:51Speaker 4: if that's just the case for this league, but I
- 15:53Speaker 4: like to see a little bit more like I think.
- 15:55Speaker 3: You have to have that pressure otherwise you're just gonna pick.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Yeah, the team, Well, you have four second to throw.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Okay, like this, so it's like we used to play
- 16:02Speaker 2: one Mississippi too, Mississippi.
- 16:04Speaker 1: But even if you don't rush, you have to throw
- 16:06Speaker 1: it in a certain amount of time.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Oh oh okay, yeah, and.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I think it's four seconds.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Can you run it?
- 16:15Speaker 4: I don't know what their rules like our rules. If
- 16:17Speaker 4: they blitzer, you can run, but if they don't blitzer,
- 16:19Speaker 4: you can't run.
- 16:21Speaker 1: And then you can throw it behind the line of
- 16:22Speaker 1: scrimmage and then that person can throw it or run.
- 16:26Speaker 4: You can pitch it. It's all like on a pitch.
- 16:28Speaker 4: It's complicated, all right.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I agree with your overall point. It's fine if you
- 16:32Speaker 1: want it, like like to Evans saying, you know, like
- 16:36Speaker 1: if you're eight, eight, nine, ten years old and you're playing,
- 16:39Speaker 1: you know, say pop wann or football. It's hard to
- 16:43Speaker 1: necessarily have a passing game. It's just hard to coordinate
- 16:47Speaker 1: twenty two guys, you know, eleven guys to be able
- 16:50Speaker 1: to throw it, catch it, and execute, whereas this at
- 16:54Speaker 1: that level you can't. You can have a guy who
- 16:57Speaker 1: can throw it and a guy who can catch it,
- 16:58Speaker 1: and you can improve ball skills and stuff like that,
- 17:01Speaker 1: but it's not football, and it's not really anything close.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Well, and shout out to your dad for being inducted
- 17:08Speaker 4: into the Pop Warner Hall of Fame.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I mean my gripe with the NFL and its promotion
- 17:13Speaker 2: of flag football. I mean my gripe with the NFL
- 17:18Speaker 2: and promoting flag football the way it is.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Is they're neglecting tackle football.
- 17:24Speaker 2: We need to get back to promoting tackle football at
- 17:27Speaker 2: the youth level and you know, like get kids, more
- 17:33Speaker 2: kids playing tackle football because I know, you know, high
- 17:36Speaker 2: school teams that used to have freshman jv Varsity are
- 17:40Speaker 2: down to two some one.
- 17:42Speaker 4: You know, towns are merging, towns are merging. There's just
- 17:45Speaker 4: not enough kids to feel these teams anymore. And it's
- 17:48Speaker 4: it's not right, it's not good. The NFL needs to
- 17:52Speaker 4: spend at least as much effort promoting tackle as they
- 17:55Speaker 4: do flag football.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Right now, it's just I mean, there it's issues. I mean,
- 18:00Speaker 1: it's it's kind of a campaign against all like contact sports.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Like you're seeing hockey teams, hockey, high school hockey teams
- 18:09Speaker 1: are going away left and right. There are unbelievable co
- 18:13Speaker 1: ops with three and four schools together just to have
- 18:16Speaker 1: one sort of Division III school in hockey and football.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Your friend's nailing it. So, you know, my kids played
- 18:24Speaker 1: in a small Catholic conference, you know, the Catholic Central League,
- 18:27Speaker 1: and most of the schools in the league only had
- 18:31Speaker 1: one you know, like Bishop Fiann's a big school down here.
- 18:35Speaker 1: They have a good JV and freshman team. We would run,
- 18:39Speaker 1: you know, at Bishop Fenwick, we'd have three teams, but
- 18:42Speaker 1: the vast majority of the league had a hard time
- 18:44Speaker 1: even putting a JV team out there. Yeah, so you're
- 18:48Speaker 1: talking about forty kids maybe in the program, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 1: total freshmen to senior forty kids.
- 18:57Speaker 5: I mean, what are they playing because they have to
- 18:59Speaker 5: be playing something like they're not like not playing sports anymore.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Well, there's like the individual stuff, the fall.
- 19:06Speaker 1: You know, there's always soccer, you know, you know it
- 19:09Speaker 1: gets played in the fall.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Tracking This track in the fall fall track right there
- 19:14Speaker 2: used to be track is a spring.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Spring in winter, I think is track. But I mean
- 19:20Speaker 1: soccer I think cuts into it a little bit. I mean,
- 19:24Speaker 1: but it's but it's a campaign. It's a campaign. You know,
- 19:27Speaker 1: the media so sensationalizes all of the I mean, I'm
- 19:31Speaker 1: not telling you they're not real issues. And I'm not
- 19:33Speaker 1: not going into the cam Scataboo area here where I'm
- 19:37Speaker 1: making light of of CTE and concussions because it's not
- 19:41Speaker 1: anything to be taken lightly. It's something that I thought
- 19:43Speaker 1: about long and hard before my kids played, and I
- 19:47Speaker 1: was very cognizant of it going in. But the way
- 19:51Speaker 1: the scare tactics that are that are going on in
- 19:54Speaker 1: the mainstream media to like basically telling you you're a
- 19:58Speaker 1: bad parent if you let your kid play hockey or
- 20:01Speaker 1: you let your kid play football, like it's it's a problem.
- 20:05Speaker 1: And that's why I think the participation is down more
- 20:08Speaker 1: so because I don't think there's a lot of soccer
- 20:10Speaker 1: programs that are you know, aren't necessarily thriving either. So
- 20:14Speaker 1: I think there are kids that just aren't playing as
- 20:16Speaker 1: many sports, you know, for for these fears about head
- 20:19Speaker 1: injuries and whatnot.
- 20:20Speaker 6: And the specialization.
- 20:22Speaker 3: I think it's video games.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Video games is absolutely a part of it. Fred, I
- 20:27Speaker 1: think you're right, kids are getting lazy.
- 20:30Speaker 6: I don't know about that, but I don't.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Things to do. I wasn't necessarily making yeah, but I
- 20:38Speaker 1: mean entire generation.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Videos I would have, but I I'm apparently I'm in
- 20:45Speaker 2: the minority right now.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I don't know. I have one of each.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I have a kid who really loves playing computer games
- 20:50Speaker 4: and be it, and I have another kid who like
- 20:51Speaker 4: he's just dying to go fishing. That is, like all
- 20:53Speaker 4: he wants to do is go outsider, you know, or
- 20:55Speaker 4: play sports.
- 20:56Speaker 1: So I don't. I don't know. It's I mean, it's
- 20:57Speaker 1: all part of it.
- 20:58Speaker 4: I wonder about the specialization thing. You see that in
- 21:00Speaker 4: hockey with juniors and all these.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Hockey specializations in issue chopping up that.
- 21:04Speaker 4: You know, players are going to go and just kind
- 21:07Speaker 4: of put their education in the backseat and do virtual
- 21:09Speaker 4: school so that they can play hockey twenty four to
- 21:12Speaker 4: seven and three sixty five.
- 21:13Speaker 3: You know, I don't.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I guess you got to pick.
- 21:15Speaker 4: What's right for you.
- 21:15Speaker 3: But I think we're warped.
- 21:17Speaker 1: It is amazing though when you watch, you know, the
- 21:19Speaker 1: specialization thing is something I've sort of tracked a lot
- 21:22Speaker 1: because you know, just being in the locker room here
- 21:26Speaker 1: and talking to all multiple players in just how much
- 21:29Speaker 1: they all it's one hundred percent. I've never heard one say, oh,
- 21:33Speaker 1: the thing to do is specialize. I'm talking literally, it's
- 21:35Speaker 1: one hundred percent. They promote multiple sports, you know, growing up,
- 21:41Speaker 1: and it's amazing when you watch at the high school level.
- 21:44Speaker 1: And I'm not as in tuned to it now because
- 21:46Speaker 1: both of my kids are done, but all of the
- 21:48Speaker 1: best players, like the best football player is a three
- 21:52Speaker 1: sport guy, the best basketball player is a three sport guy.
- 21:56Speaker 1: It's amazing to me. It's not just well, well they
- 21:59Speaker 1: play three, but it's it's the ones who excel the most.
- 22:03Speaker 3: And that's the thing. They're so natural at it.
- 22:05Speaker 2: They don't need to specialize because every season they're the
- 22:08Speaker 2: best anyway.
- 22:09Speaker 1: But they're constantly told by these coaches Evans right, and
- 22:13Speaker 1: is right. You know, seventh grade, eighth grade, well, you
- 22:16Speaker 1: need to be in my you know, my soccer program.
- 22:19Speaker 1: You need to be in my junior hockey program. You know,
- 22:21Speaker 1: we're the junior Coyotes and we're the junior Bruins, and
- 22:24Speaker 1: you know, this is if you want to if you
- 22:26Speaker 1: want to get better, and then you get pressured into it,
- 22:28Speaker 1: and you feel like you're going to lose ice time
- 22:31Speaker 1: if you don't do it, if you don't specialize, that's
- 22:32Speaker 1: what happens to these these things. Lacrosse does the same thing.
- 22:36Speaker 1: The only sport that really doesn't specialize is football, yeah,
- 22:39Speaker 1: because you just play one. Well now you can't play
- 22:42Speaker 1: your flag.
- 22:43Speaker 5: They play flag in the spring and summer. But I
- 22:46Speaker 5: think the I mean lacrosse was starting when I was playing,
- 22:49Speaker 5: you know, with the teams, you know, the travel teams
- 22:53Speaker 5: and like your varsity coach would have like a club team,
- 22:55Speaker 5: and if you didn't play for the club team with
- 22:57Speaker 5: the varsity coach, then good luck getting any playing time
- 23:00Speaker 5: once the regular season you know, rolled around in the spring.
- 23:03Speaker 5: And that was thirty three, so that was a long
- 23:06Speaker 5: time ago now. But you know, I just look at like,
- 23:09Speaker 5: you know, Drake May, Like Drake May talks all the
- 23:11Speaker 5: time about basketball and how like good that was for
- 23:15Speaker 5: him in so many different ways, like talking about like
- 23:18Speaker 5: pressure moments and like having the ball in your hands,
- 23:21Speaker 5: and you know, skill and hand eye coordination and like
- 23:24Speaker 5: all that kind of stuff. I was just doing some
- 23:26Speaker 5: of the linebackers the other day, researching for the draft,
- 23:30Speaker 5: and the kid from Oregon is already drafted to the
- 23:33Speaker 5: Bay MLB. He's a two sport athlete at Oregon and
- 23:36Speaker 5: he got drafted as a baseball player in the MLB draft.
- 23:40Speaker 5: And now but he wants I want, he wants, he
- 23:43Speaker 5: wants to play. No, he's a linebacker. He wants to
- 23:46Speaker 5: play football, so he's gonna he's gonna take the football route.
- 23:49Speaker 5: But some team in the MLB already has his rights
- 23:52Speaker 5: if he ever decides to go play.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Baby talk about him a lot during the games. That's
- 23:56Speaker 1: why I don't remember. I don't remember his name, but
- 23:59Speaker 1: I remember the story.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Yeah, he's like they're starting Mike linebacker, so yeah, they
- 24:03Speaker 5: you know, you just see it even doing this draft
- 24:05Speaker 5: stuff where it's like, oh, this kid's also like a
- 24:08Speaker 5: really good basketball player. He's a really good baseball player.
- 24:10Speaker 5: He's really good whatever. And I don't know.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Tina and bel Ricka asks, is flag football to football
- 24:18Speaker 2: as pickleball is the tennis.
- 24:21Speaker 3: A little bit?
- 24:22Speaker 2: But I flag football is worse because it's being marketed
- 24:25Speaker 2: to kids and as an alternative to something that you
- 24:29Speaker 2: shouldn't be playing, which isn't right. Pickleball is like you
- 24:33Speaker 2: admit it, you can't play tennis, so you're playing pickleball.
- 24:36Speaker 3: You know that's different.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I love the little sniff there at the end, but yeah, yeah,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I think you're right. I think it's it's it's they're
- 24:46Speaker 1: not telling you. You know, young tennis players don't play tennis,
- 24:49Speaker 1: play pickleball, right, you know what I mean, like save
- 24:52Speaker 1: a little wear and tear in the body. Yeah, because
- 24:54Speaker 1: I'm sure that pickleball is well, you know, I'm sure
- 24:57Speaker 1: it's a workout.
- 24:58Speaker 3: It can be if you're playing well, it's.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Not as much as as tennis. It's not as much running,
- 25:02Speaker 1: not as much court to cover as tennis. So you
- 25:05Speaker 1: could market it as like, oh, well, you know, you know,
- 25:08Speaker 1: save your wear and tear and play pickleball when you're eight.
- 25:10Speaker 1: You don't need to be playing full tennis, right. Yeah.
- 25:13Speaker 1: If they don't market it like that, that's what they're
- 25:15Speaker 1: doing for football.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Right and flight football too is kind of excuse to
- 25:18Speaker 4: the kids who can run, and like I always one
- 25:19Speaker 4: thing I like about football is like there's a place
- 25:21Speaker 4: for the slow big kid like the slow big kids.
- 25:23Speaker 4: You can play a place for everybody, those things that.
- 25:26Speaker 2: I always said, if you can play football, you play football.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Yeah right, that's that's what you do. Nick from Connecticut
- 25:36Speaker 2: rights in I can hear you. Last Thursday show showed
- 25:40Speaker 2: why we need Paul. When discussing number one wide receivers,
- 25:43Speaker 2: everyone kept talking about JSN and the Super Bowl as
- 25:46Speaker 2: a talking point as to what why haunt one doesn't matter.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I don't know what he must have missed, biled I
- 25:53Speaker 2: don't know what that means. The crew and callers said
- 25:55Speaker 2: many times that Gonzo took him out of the game.
- 25:57Speaker 2: This is simply not true. He missed the majority party
- 26:00Speaker 2: of the game due to that foot injury, which is
- 26:02Speaker 2: why his numbers were low. Even when he was in.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Gonzo was primarily on Shaheed on the outside. Evan was
- 26:08Speaker 2: correct in his WR one take, but completely blew his
- 26:12Speaker 2: argument without Paul there to remind people.
- 26:14Speaker 6: Of the facts, saying Jason missed time in the Super Bowl.
- 26:18Speaker 1: With a concussion. Yes, he missed like the whole third quarter,
- 26:22Speaker 1: but did he have a foot thing going in? I
- 26:25Speaker 1: don't know. I would just argue that Sam Darnold took
- 26:29Speaker 1: JSN out of the Super Bowl. That would have been
- 26:31Speaker 1: my Paul argument for that. But I but I don't
- 26:35Speaker 1: think it sounds like Evan you were advocating for the
- 26:37Speaker 1: need in the importance of a number one guy. Yeah,
- 26:40Speaker 1: even if he doesn't have a good game, but.
- 26:42Speaker 6: He still played seventy percent of the snaps, missed the
- 26:45Speaker 6: third quarter. Yeah, but we're not talking about the guy
- 26:47Speaker 6: is acting like he played ten snaps.
- 26:49Speaker 1: No, no, no, he came back. He came back in
- 26:51Speaker 1: the game.
- 26:53Speaker 5: But you know, some of the people were just saying that,
- 26:57Speaker 5: you know, JSN didn't have a huge Super Bowl, so
- 27:00Speaker 5: that shows you that you don't need it.
- 27:02Speaker 1: And I just couldn't couldn't disagree more.
- 27:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I was making the argument shows you the importance
- 27:06Speaker 6: of it, right.
- 27:07Speaker 5: The game planning that went into taking him out of
- 27:09Speaker 5: the game opened up things, you know, for other people.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and I would also like the snarky comment that
- 27:14Speaker 1: I would have had is if Donald was accurate on
- 27:17Speaker 1: three passes, we're talking about an entirely different game for JSN.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Like he was opened three times, two of which should
- 27:23Speaker 1: have been touchdowns, and Donald just didn't get him the
- 27:26Speaker 1: ball and Gonzales ended up making incredible pass breakups as
- 27:30Speaker 1: a result. But if the throws are good, then he's
- 27:32Speaker 1: not doing anything about them.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Well, the one touchdown down, you know by the goal line.
- 27:38Speaker 5: That one was to Jaysn. The deep post that Gonzo
- 27:41Speaker 5: broke up was to Shaheed.
- 27:42Speaker 1: But they they I'm talking about a deep ball maybe
- 27:45Speaker 1: guns Gonzo wasn't involved in. But there was a deep
- 27:47Speaker 1: ball early in the game off of scramble that he
- 27:49Speaker 1: was five yards of the play, no one near him.
- 27:51Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, on the broken play. Yeah.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I mean so, in other words, let's add two touchdowns
- 27:57Speaker 1: and one hundred yards of receiving to the bad game
- 28:00Speaker 1: for JSN, just on two good throws.
- 28:03Speaker 5: Like no, I mean, his presence was felt in the game.
- 28:05Speaker 5: That was the only point. Whether it was in the
- 28:07Speaker 5: box score or not, you.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Have to account for that guy, and the Patriots did,
- 28:11Speaker 1: and they kept him down. I mean, they give Gonzo
- 28:14Speaker 1: credit for that, But I don't think that that means
- 28:17Speaker 1: that the number one receiver is not important. I think
- 28:19Speaker 1: it's very important.
- 28:21Speaker 2: George says, well, damn, Fred, you cut Paul and Mike
- 28:24Speaker 2: off when they were discussing Paul's pop induction into the
- 28:26Speaker 2: Pop Water Hall of fame. Can you finish that conversation please?
- 28:31Speaker 1: So he was inducted into the National Pulp Owner Football
- 28:35Speaker 1: Hall of Fame over the weekend in Chicago. It's great.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Did you go?
- 28:40Speaker 1: I was in Charleston with my son.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Oh okay, who his son?
- 28:44Speaker 4: Get the crap eat out?
- 28:45Speaker 1: My son? My son had his recognition day at the Citadel.
- 28:48Speaker 1: So the rest of my family though, my mom, my
- 28:52Speaker 1: brother and sister, and my couple of nieces and nephews
- 28:56Speaker 1: were there. It was a great, great weekend for him.
- 29:00Speaker 1: It's a great honor to be part of that fifty
- 29:02Speaker 1: four years he spent volunteering his time in Pop Warner football,
- 29:08Speaker 1: so it was very rewarding for all of us. It
- 29:11Speaker 1: was a huge, huge accomplishment.
- 29:14Speaker 4: What does he think of flag football?
- 29:17Speaker 1: So, I mean he's like everybody else's. He's very disappointed
- 29:20Speaker 1: in the you know, the programs that are going under
- 29:23Speaker 1: they just don't have the participation to support it. And
- 29:28Speaker 1: it's something that my parents, you know, dedicated a lot
- 29:31Speaker 1: of time too, So it means a lot to them,
- 29:33Speaker 1: and it's it's sad to them, you know, and no
- 29:36Speaker 1: one's you know, not running programs. But it's not like
- 29:39Speaker 1: it's mismanagement. It's just the numbers just aren't there anymore.
- 29:43Speaker 1: You know, there's not enough to do.
- 29:44Speaker 3: We blame the parents, what do we blame?
- 29:46Speaker 1: I blame the media, the media. I think the media
- 29:49Speaker 1: has created a scare of of epic proportions among and
- 29:55Speaker 1: not just football, like almost youth sports in general.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Well then then yeah, so that's what I was about
- 30:01Speaker 3: to say.
- 30:01Speaker 2: If if it's youth sports in general, then what's going on?
- 30:06Speaker 2: Because like I don't know, there are some sports where
- 30:10Speaker 2: they don't associate it with CTE.
- 30:12Speaker 1: What's going on there?
- 30:14Speaker 4: I mean, I I think there's literally when Paul saying,
- 30:16Speaker 4: I mean, from my perspective, I just hate seeing that
- 30:18Speaker 4: they be kids so corporatized and these are now money
- 30:22Speaker 4: making machines and it's no longer about getting kids to
- 30:25Speaker 4: play sports and learn how to be on a team
- 30:27Speaker 4: and learn how to deal with success and failure. It's
- 30:30Speaker 4: about trying to get your kid to the NHL. You know,
- 30:33Speaker 4: I'm just speaking mainly from the hockey angle, because that's,
- 30:36Speaker 4: you know, the closest thing.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Just go to college, like like it's a it's a
- 30:41Speaker 1: everybody wants to have their kid go to school for
- 30:43Speaker 1: free and you know, the the reality of that is
- 30:48Speaker 1: that the odds are so astronomically stacked against that. But
- 30:55Speaker 1: it doesn't stop. And it's funny. You know, Mike and
- 30:57Speaker 1: I were joking around this morning. There was the Wall
- 31:00Speaker 1: Street Journal story today that came out that indicated that
- 31:05Speaker 1: there were they're starting to see this ground swell of
- 31:07Speaker 1: kids repeating the eighth grade in an effort to get
- 31:11Speaker 1: NIL packages. I sort of I made the mistake of,
- 31:14Speaker 1: you know, stating facts of things that have happened for
- 31:16Speaker 1: thirty years. Kids have been repeating the eighth grade in
- 31:20Speaker 1: an effort to get a Division one scholarship. Nothing to
- 31:22Speaker 1: do with NIL. This is stuff that I had three
- 31:27Speaker 1: or four kids that I grew up with that did it,
- 31:29Speaker 1: one of which I was pretty close with. I had
- 31:33Speaker 1: some other kids, you know, sort of around me. When
- 31:36Speaker 1: my kids were going through middle school. There was a
- 31:41Speaker 1: I could think of a half dozen off the top
- 31:42Speaker 1: of my head that did it again before NIL was
- 31:45Speaker 1: even a thing. Oh yeah, and I can think of
- 31:50Speaker 1: one kid that played Division one. He played Division one basketball.
- 31:54Speaker 1: He repeated the eighth grade in the early nineties. He
- 31:56Speaker 1: played Division one basketball at a very high level. And
- 32:00Speaker 1: you know, maybe he wouldn't have gotten that scholarship if
- 32:02Speaker 1: he had just gone to the I don't know, there's
- 32:04Speaker 1: no way of knowing. It didn't happen. He did repeat
- 32:07Speaker 1: the eighth grade, and he did get a Division I scholarship,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and he was very successful at a high level.
- 32:12Speaker 6: The thing that.
- 32:14Speaker 5: I worry about is I think a lot of this
- 32:17Speaker 5: is cash grabbing to create club teams and all that
- 32:22Speaker 5: is a It's a lot of.
- 32:23Speaker 6: Money involved in that business.
- 32:25Speaker 1: AU club teams un amok.
- 32:29Speaker 5: And so like these people that you know, maybe were
- 32:32Speaker 5: Paul's father in a you know at one point in time,
- 32:35Speaker 5: are now seeing opportunities to make money off of specialization
- 32:41Speaker 5: and off of club teams and stuff. And this also,
- 32:43Speaker 5: like I, this was already starting when I was in
- 32:45Speaker 5: high school, especially in the lacrosse world, but even the
- 32:49Speaker 5: basketball world too, And there was already AAU.
- 32:52Speaker 6: There was already club lacrosse.
- 32:54Speaker 3: There was and it was well AAU basketball forever.
- 32:57Speaker 5: But we're talking about like when I was playing, like
- 33:00Speaker 5: thousands of dollars that you have different now that you had.
- 33:03Speaker 6: To invest in to just to be on the team.
- 33:07Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's after you made the team as a
- 33:11Speaker 5: tryout player, like you know, like you'd try out for
- 33:13Speaker 5: the team, they'd say you made the team, and then
- 33:15Speaker 5: they would tell your parents, Oh, by the way, you know,
- 33:18Speaker 5: it's eleven hundred dollars for him to be on the team.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:21Speaker 1: So when we were growing up, for like basically au
- 33:25Speaker 1: basketball was like every town had one. It was like
- 33:28Speaker 1: a travel program, you know, so you had to pay
- 33:31Speaker 1: and you had to try out, you know, so you
- 33:34Speaker 1: had to be you know a little bit, you know,
- 33:37Speaker 1: a little bit more skills, I guess than just anybody.
- 33:40Speaker 1: You know, everybody had rec leagues and stuff to play in.
- 33:43Speaker 1: But now there are literally hundreds of basketball programs. So
- 33:49Speaker 1: like you go in and there's two things. If you
- 33:53Speaker 1: go to play for a bigger program, Well you go
- 33:56Speaker 1: and you try out, Oh, well you're not going to
- 34:00Speaker 1: be on the elite team, but we're going to have
- 34:02Speaker 1: you one. Yeah, we're gonna have you won the sub
- 34:05Speaker 1: varsity team. Yeah, cost the same, Yeah right, but they
- 34:11Speaker 1: won't cut you. As long as you cut the check,
- 34:14Speaker 1: they won't cut you. And there'll be a place for you.
- 34:17Speaker 1: You know. My oldest son was a pretty good basketball player,
- 34:20Speaker 1: and he played on some of these programs and some
- 34:23Speaker 1: of the teams that he was on were pretty good.
- 34:24Speaker 1: My younger son wasn't a very good basketball player, but
- 34:28Speaker 1: he really wanted to play. So he was on a
- 34:31Speaker 1: team and he played it for a year, and you know,
- 34:33Speaker 1: he played it for a season, and to his credit,
- 34:36Speaker 1: he realized, you know, this is a little bit too
- 34:38Speaker 1: high level for it. But they didn't cut them. He
- 34:41Speaker 1: was probably there was like seven kids on the team,
- 34:43Speaker 1: eight kids on the team. He was probably seven or eight.
- 34:46Speaker 1: But they didn't cut them. They took it, you know,
- 34:47Speaker 1: my check, you know, clear, just like anybody else's. They
- 34:51Speaker 1: took it. And I like the programs that they played for.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I liked the coaches and stuff, but it's not for everybody.
- 34:57Speaker 1: And there they for basketball, for hockey, for lacrosse, for soccer.
- 35:03Speaker 1: There are literally hundreds of programs.
- 35:06Speaker 6: I just don't know if it made me any better.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I will say there is something to the quality of
- 35:15Speaker 2: the coaching and competition you get there, because you know,
- 35:19Speaker 2: back in the day, it was just your town league.
- 35:21Speaker 2: And let's face it, you know, you're playing against other
- 35:24Speaker 2: kids in your town and some other towns, and you're
- 35:27Speaker 2: not always playing the best kids. And I will say
- 35:30Speaker 2: that to a degree, you get better competition doing this.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Yeah, the competition, I would agree with the coaching, yeah,
- 35:38Speaker 1: very hot and cold or miss yeah sure.
- 35:41Speaker 6: I just don't.
- 35:41Speaker 5: I don't know if it made me any better at
- 35:44Speaker 5: that particular sport, Like maybe it made me better all around,
- 35:49Speaker 5: you know, I was in better shape, I was you know,
- 35:51Speaker 5: more active all that, but like I don't think that
- 35:54Speaker 5: that's like what why I played varsity lacrosse is because
- 35:58Speaker 5: I was on a club team. Like I don't, I
- 36:00Speaker 5: don't think that was it well, like big picture for me.
- 36:01Speaker 4: Like I just I've been watching enoughew sports like you're
- 36:04Speaker 4: not going to effort your way into professional sports, like
- 36:06Speaker 4: you're kind of know who those kids are going to be.
- 36:09Speaker 4: And you know, for me, I had to effort myself
- 36:12Speaker 4: to play you know, holy Cross hockey, which isn't you know,
- 36:14Speaker 4: the pinnacle that I really dreamed of, like hockey's but
- 36:17Speaker 4: you know, to play a solid level of college hockey.
- 36:20Speaker 4: I had to do that. So I do think kids
- 36:21Speaker 4: are able to get to that level.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I just it's such a grind now.
- 36:24Speaker 4: It's like kids have to go play juniors to then
- 36:27Speaker 4: go play at like a D three NESTCAC school, you know,
- 36:29Speaker 4: like again hockey, But that just seems insane to me, Like,
- 36:33Speaker 4: go to college, have some fun. It's about your education.
- 36:35Speaker 4: You know, I played four years great experience. I wasn't
- 36:38Speaker 4: going to play in the NHL, but that helped me
- 36:41Speaker 4: get through college. And you know, I just I think
- 36:43Speaker 4: people are missing out on that D three stuff. The
- 36:45Speaker 4: people that think they're going to effort their way into
- 36:47Speaker 4: the pros though, that are you know, doing hockey showcases
- 36:49Speaker 4: in the spring, and I'm like, there's no one here.
- 36:50Speaker 1: People have no idea how difficult it is to even
- 36:52Speaker 1: play at the Division three level.
- 36:54Speaker 6: I just I don't know, Like maybe I'm marale. You
- 36:56Speaker 6: guys are closer to it than me.
- 36:57Speaker 5: But like I is it so much that their trying
- 37:00Speaker 5: to effort their way into the pros or they're trying
- 37:02Speaker 5: to effort their way into scholarship.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Money scholarship scholarship because that's what.
- 37:06Speaker 5: The parents angle I think of it is, is pushing
- 37:08Speaker 5: the kids so that they don't have to pay for college.
- 37:10Speaker 4: So I don't have to save up, which I get,
- 37:12Speaker 4: Like I have a question the nil thing. Let's say
- 37:16Speaker 4: I don't get a scholarship to a school, but I
- 37:18Speaker 4: get a bunch of nil money. Can I use that
- 37:20Speaker 4: nil money to pay for my schooling?
- 37:23Speaker 1: Is that? I guess you're getting money If you're not
- 37:27Speaker 1: a scholarship why are they paying for you?
- 37:30Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 37:31Speaker 4: Well, are there schools that get nil that aren't scholarship schools?
- 37:34Speaker 4: Are only schools to get nil money.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Scholarship schools, I would think?
- 37:37Speaker 2: So, I mean, I don't think Division three has got
- 37:39Speaker 2: nil money?
- 37:40Speaker 1: Well you can, But like what so I am? By
- 37:44Speaker 1: no means am I an expert at nil? Like this
- 37:46Speaker 1: wasn't the thing when I was in school.
- 37:48Speaker 4: From Twitter, I thought you were.
- 37:50Speaker 7: But going around telling everyone want you know, I am
- 37:57Speaker 7: somewhat an expert of repeating the eighth grade because it's
- 37:59Speaker 7: ramp in Peberty, Massachusetts.
- 38:02Speaker 1: But it's about academics. Okay, So what what the the
- 38:10Speaker 1: schools that have nil packages in general? First of all,
- 38:14Speaker 1: the school itself can pay and I don't know what
- 38:18Speaker 1: the threshold is, but there's a limit and they can.
- 38:20Speaker 1: They can just decide to fund their whole athletic department,
- 38:24Speaker 1: so everybody could get the same. The school picks who
- 38:27Speaker 1: gets the anile money. No, that's no, that's that's just revenue.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Nil comes from generally outside see that that's the problem
- 38:34Speaker 1: is nil isn't really about naming, image and likeness anymore.
- 38:38Speaker 1: That's what the original fight was for. But now it's
- 38:41Speaker 1: just like, you know, Mikes Subaru wants to sponsor the
- 38:45Speaker 1: Holy Cross men's hockey team, and he's going to donate
- 38:49Speaker 1: five million dollars to be dispersed among the players. Like
- 38:52Speaker 1: that's what nil is has resorted to boosters or just.
- 38:56Speaker 6: Like literally paying players to transfer.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Into the school. Right, So you need to have some
- 39:03Speaker 1: sort of ability to attract attention marketing Mike do so
- 39:08Speaker 1: super route, so they want to use you, you know what
- 39:11Speaker 1: I mean. Now there is I've heard some stories of
- 39:13Speaker 1: like and you see the human interest stuff. You know,
- 39:16Speaker 1: every week there's like a thirty five year old guy
- 39:19Speaker 1: who's playing Division III football in like Pennsylvania, you know,
- 39:23Speaker 1: and well that's a great story. I'm going to latch
- 39:26Speaker 1: myself onto that and get the publicity. So again, Mike
- 39:29Speaker 1: is so super is gonna say, I'll give you five grand.
- 39:33Speaker 1: You know, this thirty five year old linebacker that's you know,
- 39:36Speaker 1: playing with all these young kids in Division three and
- 39:39Speaker 1: maybe he can get some NIL.
- 39:41Speaker 8: But like.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Paul Perola playing baseball at BU non scholarship you had
- 39:48Speaker 1: to pay, like T Anthony's wasn't paying me to, you know,
- 39:51Speaker 1: to play as much as I supported T and T
- 39:54Speaker 1: Anthony's money. Don't forget the tugout. None of them wanted
- 39:57Speaker 1: to put any ni Owe money to it. My month
- 40:00Speaker 1: time about it's a natural fit, like I'm just giving
- 40:02Speaker 1: it back to you every week recirculated.
- 40:06Speaker 5: It is interesting that like we when we travel and
- 40:08Speaker 5: we don't, college sports isn't very big here in Boston
- 40:12Speaker 5: at least not you know, football and basketball like in
- 40:14Speaker 5: his other places. But when we go other places, you
- 40:16Speaker 5: now see college athletes with marketing deals at like local
- 40:21Speaker 5: restaurants and bars.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Now you do.
- 40:23Speaker 5: I remember we were in Arizona and there was a
- 40:25Speaker 5: scata burger. It was a cam skataboo burger that was
- 40:30Speaker 5: at this you know. And now like that's a an
- 40:32Speaker 5: il's impact.
- 40:34Speaker 1: If you watched any of the basketball like this, this
- 40:36Speaker 1: is a Yukon commercial that comes on every like thirty seconds,
- 40:39Speaker 1: you know, and I forget those. I mean that you're
- 40:43Speaker 1: getting directly paid for the Oh yeah, that's all.
- 40:46Speaker 2: The kids are in commercials now L from Wisconsin speaking
- 40:49Speaker 2: of the n C Double as last Thursday, Fred was wrong.
- 40:53Speaker 2: He repeatedly stated that Paul was at Loser Palooza. Fred,
- 40:56Speaker 2: that is when Paul takes time to go watch Northeastern basketball,
- 40:59Speaker 2: not the started the NCAA bracket.
- 41:02Speaker 1: This is true. Belle's nailing it.
- 41:04Speaker 2: As fans, we listened to the show to get the truth.
- 41:07Speaker 2: So I hope that a correction is incoming.
- 41:10Speaker 4: Usually those two things work together, though, right when they
- 41:12Speaker 4: snuck into the dance and then you.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Know, well, but then I don't go with the Then
- 41:17Speaker 1: you're torn between none of your cruise. I got I
- 41:19Speaker 1: got to pay attention right right. If Northeastern's playing Notre
- 41:23Speaker 1: Dame in the tournament, I'm not at Jake and Joe's
- 41:26Speaker 1: I mean, come on, I got it. I got a responsibility.
- 41:29Speaker 6: It's been in an okay tournament so far.
- 41:31Speaker 1: It's been another All Chalk, which is kind of disappointing
- 41:35Speaker 1: Florida loss. Yeah, but there's literally on Friday Favorite twenty
- 41:41Speaker 1: sixteen in.
- 41:41Speaker 5: All Yeah, like what do we I watched a couple
- 41:45Speaker 5: of the games, mostly for the draft.
- 41:48Speaker 6: Guys. You can't boozer.
- 41:51Speaker 5: They really good in the second half of that game,
- 41:52Speaker 5: It's kind of struggled, but that get a coff from Arkansas.
- 41:56Speaker 6: He's terrific, really good.
- 41:58Speaker 1: I didn't get it. I didn't get a chance to
- 41:59Speaker 1: see a whole I watched Thursday, and then I was
- 42:02Speaker 1: away for the weekend, so I saw some of the stuff.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Flying home Sunday night, I got a chance to see
- 42:09Speaker 1: Tennessee Virginia. Saw the Iowa Florida game that Evan I wanted.
- 42:14Speaker 2: I watched Florida so I wanted to see that seven.
- 42:16Speaker 3: To nine guy.
- 42:16Speaker 1: But he doesn't play.
- 42:18Speaker 3: He just sits at the end of the bench.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Yeah, he doesn't play.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Was Will Upsett he missed down Merrimack taken home?
- 42:23Speaker 1: Yeah he was. He was texting me. He's like, it's amazing,
- 42:26Speaker 1: like they have all these things happening when when I'm away.
- 42:29Speaker 4: Merrimack and Yukon Hockey East battle.
- 42:32Speaker 6: Not a not a good one.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Ryan the Third from Canada says, with the addition to
- 42:38Speaker 2: James Hudson the Third, that now makes six players with
- 42:41Speaker 2: three in their name Leonard Taylor, Carlton Davis, Kevin byrn Fton, Chisholm,
- 42:46Speaker 2: James Hudson and Harrow Landry.
- 42:48Speaker 3: How is it even possible?
- 42:50Speaker 4: Is it?
- 42:50Speaker 1: Code?
- 42:51Speaker 2: Is the third the highest pick the highest they'll pick
- 42:54Speaker 2: when they'll have, uh have due to a Brown trade.
- 42:57Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Is it to celebrate May's third year three games to glory?
- 43:01Speaker 2: What are they hiding? I'm telling you they tackle. If
- 43:04Speaker 2: they draft tackle Trey Zoon the third in April, the
- 43:07Speaker 2: league may need to step in.
- 43:10Speaker 4: It's funny.
- 43:11Speaker 3: It is a lot of fact.
- 43:12Speaker 1: I've given some thought to this, and I have absolutely
- 43:15Speaker 1: no idea why it's happening. Why do you think that
- 43:18Speaker 1: is that all of a sudden people go by junior
- 43:21Speaker 1: the third senior like I had. I had a million
- 43:25Speaker 1: friends growing up that were juniors. I had a couple
- 43:29Speaker 1: that were the thirds. No one went by that. But now,
- 43:34Speaker 1: like I would say, what the last ten fifteen years,
- 43:37Speaker 1: that's become the early prob the on the name place.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I mean, I just bring it up. I don't have
- 43:43Speaker 1: any answers. I don't have any idea why just as
- 43:45Speaker 1: brothers or they call him j.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Yeah you got a kid, he going three.
- 43:51Speaker 6: He does have kids that I don't think so like.
- 43:53Speaker 1: A lot of them go by initials too. It's you know,
- 43:55Speaker 1: like AJ, you know Anthony Jr.
- 44:01Speaker 6: Question Ask a question.
- 44:02Speaker 1: I don't know why.
- 44:03Speaker 5: It's just a been, I mean on the Patriots, especially
- 44:06Speaker 5: because I mean, you have to write it every time
- 44:08Speaker 5: we name the.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Guy, don't.
- 44:10Speaker 6: Well, we get yelled at for that, Paul.
- 44:13Speaker 1: If if there's like at all a confusion as to
- 44:16Speaker 1: who you're talking about, I mean, I'm just going off
- 44:17Speaker 1: of like journalism. If there's a confusion of who you're
- 44:20Speaker 1: talking about, then you should include it. If there is none,
- 44:24Speaker 1: then you don't need to. And you're always taught. Less
- 44:28Speaker 1: is more.
- 44:28Speaker 6: I couldn't agree with you.
- 44:29Speaker 1: That's one of one of the staples that you're you're
- 44:32Speaker 1: taught is if you can say a sentence in five
- 44:35Speaker 1: words or ten words and it doesn't change the meaning,
- 44:38Speaker 1: go with the five succinctness.
- 44:40Speaker 3: Yep. Maybe there's just more parents and families naming their
- 44:45Speaker 3: kids grandparents, you know, than ever before.
- 44:47Speaker 1: See, I don't think that that. I mean again, it's
- 44:50Speaker 1: totally anecdotal. I don't think that's it. I just think
- 44:52Speaker 1: for whatever reason, people decide I want to be known
- 44:55Speaker 1: as the full name, Like how many people have added it? Right,
- 45:01Speaker 1: He's been a junior your whole life. Yeah, all of
- 45:03Speaker 1: a sudden.
- 45:04Speaker 4: Was Kevin byrd three when he came into the league
- 45:06Speaker 4: in twenty seventeen or whatever it was. I think he
- 45:09Speaker 4: was just Kevin byed back.
- 45:10Speaker 5: Well, we probably I think now we make more of
- 45:13Speaker 5: an effort to include the third or the junior or whatever.
- 45:17Speaker 2: I wonder if it's there's financial implications, like I need
- 45:20Speaker 2: to differentiate from my father because I've got my own
- 45:23Speaker 2: money and my own identity and I don't want any
- 45:25Speaker 2: mix up.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Down the road. I don't know.
- 45:27Speaker 5: I guess maybe if like your father played by Marvin Harrison,
- 45:31Speaker 5: right like, that would be.
- 45:32Speaker 1: One during the draft process from Marvin Harrison Junior, I
- 45:35Speaker 1: would write junior right because there is a chance that
- 45:38Speaker 1: people don't know who you're talking about, right like.
- 45:40Speaker 5: That one feels a little bit different than some of
- 45:42Speaker 5: these other ones where their fathers were not professional athletes.
- 45:45Speaker 6: And it's a moot.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Point CARDOI all right?
- 45:50Speaker 2: Eight five to five Patches five hundred is the hotline
- 45:53Speaker 2: podcast at Patriots dot com is the email address we've
- 45:57Speaker 2: been reading some emails. Let's take a call. Zach in
- 46:00Speaker 2: New Hampshire has become a regular caller. What's up, Zach?
- 46:05Speaker 8: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. Sure, I just
- 46:08Speaker 8: wanted to know, would you guys rather Casey concepcion in
- 46:12Speaker 8: the first, and a guy like Rommela Height in the second,
- 46:15Speaker 8: or a guy like Cash's howl in the first and
- 46:17Speaker 8: then a receiver in the second. And then also what
- 46:20Speaker 8: would you think of the duo of Casey conceptsi and
- 46:23Speaker 8: and Kyle Williams.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Okay, probably go be, Probably go B right now, you'd
- 46:29Speaker 1: rather have rather howl Cash's howl. Yeah, not to be
- 46:33Speaker 1: confused with marsh.
- 46:34Speaker 3: I feel like I liked it.
- 46:37Speaker 6: The depth of edge a lot better.
- 46:39Speaker 5: Yeah, Like I feel like the edges at sixty five
- 46:41Speaker 5: are probably better than the receivers at sixty five. So yeah,
- 46:47Speaker 5: if I had to, if I had my pick, I
- 46:48Speaker 5: would probably say, you know, on Day two of the draft,
- 46:51Speaker 5: there's still going to be a lot of starting caliber
- 46:53Speaker 5: edge rushers that are good players. So is there as
- 46:56Speaker 5: big of a drop off from those guys to the
- 47:00Speaker 5: other guys? Whereas a receiver, I think, you know, I
- 47:02Speaker 5: was uh watching yukon zone Skyler Bell the other day.
- 47:06Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, like I can, I can see
- 47:07Speaker 5: what we're working with here, but yeah, you know, we're
- 47:11Speaker 5: still not talking about I'm a little.
- 47:13Speaker 3: Intrigued in concepcion.
- 47:14Speaker 1: I like, as a player, I know Evan and Mike
- 47:18Speaker 1: have talked about sort of the replication a little bit
- 47:22Speaker 1: of what you have. But I think he's a good player.
- 47:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean right now, I'm finding myself just I
- 47:26Speaker 4: mean I like him. I think, yeah, really good player.
- 47:29Speaker 4: I just find myself drawn more towards size on the
- 47:32Speaker 4: outside with you knowv Sky something a little bittenzel Boston.
- 47:38Speaker 4: I can't. I can't quit him. I can't.
- 47:39Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I'm with you on that Conceptcion is probably
- 47:42Speaker 5: the best or one of the best, like pure separators
- 47:45Speaker 5: in this class, and certainly one of the most explosive
- 47:48Speaker 5: players at that position. UH has some issues with its
- 47:51Speaker 5: hands and drops and things like that, but when you're
- 47:54Speaker 5: targeted at a high volume, you're going to accumulate some
- 47:57Speaker 5: drops over the course of a season. But that's a
- 48:01Speaker 5: big question, is you know, are they looking for They're
- 48:05Speaker 5: really are on that size thing like we kind of
- 48:07Speaker 5: all are, and have a feeling that you know, a younger,
- 48:11Speaker 5: faster mac Collins is really what they should be targeting
- 48:14Speaker 5: versus you know, getting another guy that can win inside
- 48:17Speaker 5: and separate and do that sort of stuff.
- 48:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I find myself torn on the edges a little
- 48:21Speaker 4: bit too. Of you know, there's some guys that are
- 48:24Speaker 4: maybe a little bit more stout, you know, with Derek
- 48:27Speaker 4: Moore from Michigan. You know, I feel like I I'm
- 48:31Speaker 4: going more towards the r Thomas Mason guy, the guys
- 48:34Speaker 4: that get off the ball fast and maybe aren't that big.
- 48:37Speaker 4: It's almost opposite of what I feel like we'll receiver.
- 48:39Speaker 4: Feel like I'm really just looking for an aggressive rusher.
- 48:42Speaker 4: And I don't know if that's right, because I think that,
- 48:45Speaker 4: you know, if they really want a three down guy,
- 48:48Speaker 4: you know, I mean like Zion Young, you know, like somebody.
- 48:50Speaker 4: Yeah he's a little bit bigger, but is he got
- 48:53Speaker 4: more like three down possibility right out of the gate,
- 48:56Speaker 4: or are you saying, let's just grab a guy who's
- 48:59Speaker 4: got a bunch of juice on third down and we'll
- 49:01Speaker 4: see if we can slowly kind of make him into
- 49:04Speaker 4: what we wanted to be as an every down kind
- 49:05Speaker 4: of player. I also think it's easier to find guys
- 49:07Speaker 4: who can set the edge, you know, but those.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Guys that are juiced up and get off the ball quick.
- 49:12Speaker 4: And you know, just have that that play style, that's
- 49:16Speaker 4: that's kind of what I'm drawing to right now. I
- 49:17Speaker 4: just I don't know what it's right, if it's right
- 49:19Speaker 4: or wrong yet though I don't know what they're looking for.
- 49:20Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a hard one.
- 49:21Speaker 5: I think that's the hardest part about the edge class
- 49:24Speaker 5: is that there's so many of them. Not all of
- 49:26Speaker 5: them are going to pan out, Like not every single
- 49:28Speaker 5: one of them is going to hit. So like deciding
- 49:30Speaker 5: you know which ones are t J.
- 49:32Speaker 1: Parker that's another one. Yeah, physical guy.
- 49:34Speaker 5: It's a flavor draft and you have to pick correctly,
- 49:37Speaker 5: and it's it's not going to be easy because there's
- 49:39Speaker 5: guys that you know, Deuce was talking about that play
- 49:42Speaker 5: more at like you know some you know the caller
- 49:44Speaker 5: called in Abou Romelo, Heidi weighting at two hundred and
- 49:46Speaker 5: forty pounds. You know, we were just talking to Q
- 49:48Speaker 5: Hutchins at BC yesterday. He's two thirty three. Yeah, you know,
- 49:51Speaker 5: like these are light shit is like exposive pass rushers.
- 49:56Speaker 5: And then you have guys like Zion Young who plays
- 49:57Speaker 5: close to two sixty five, two seventy like these you know,
- 50:01Speaker 5: both put their hand in the dirt at the end,
- 50:03Speaker 5: you know, end of the line. You know, you have
- 50:05Speaker 5: to decide which kind of type of player you.
- 50:07Speaker 4: Want, you know, I think Bart just took him, gave me.
- 50:12Speaker 6: I love him too.
- 50:13Speaker 5: I love his plate demeanor, plays with grave violence with
- 50:16Speaker 5: his hands.
- 50:17Speaker 3: You said bar just took him. Is there a live
- 50:19Speaker 3: draft going.
- 50:20Speaker 1: On as well?
- 50:21Speaker 5: It's really funny because whenever we do mock drafts, somewhere
- 50:25Speaker 5: in the world is a mock draft going on. It's
- 50:27Speaker 5: so they're so some him and I mine. Mock drafts
- 50:30Speaker 5: are always so similar. It's either the same order of positions,
- 50:36Speaker 5: or it's the same players or bowls.
- 50:37Speaker 6: Sometimes.
- 50:38Speaker 5: So he went like tackle, edge, tight end, and I
- 50:42Speaker 5: was like, God, damn, Like, can we just not talk
- 50:45Speaker 5: about this a much?
- 50:46Speaker 3: Because it's just like people don't care.
- 50:48Speaker 6: It's literally the same mock draf.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Fred just had my conversation Mike and sugar Hill Hampshire.
- 50:57Speaker 2: I'm wondering how much crap the cat really is. Elon
- 51:01Speaker 2: Musk is worth more than the net worth of all
- 51:03Speaker 2: thirty two owners combined. If he were to buy a
- 51:05Speaker 2: team and have a goal of spending at least one
- 51:07Speaker 2: billion in real cash a year, would he be able
- 51:10Speaker 2: to I'm not asking to catch you in hypocrisy and
- 51:13Speaker 2: say that the cap isn't crap, just sort of crap.
- 51:16Speaker 2: But would this, But would his hypothetical team be able
- 51:19Speaker 2: to spend that much each year and still stay into
- 51:21Speaker 2: the SAR cap by paying bonuses and spreading it out
- 51:24Speaker 2: decades on the cap, all while truly spending whatever they
- 51:27Speaker 2: want with no limit. And please don't let Mike give
- 51:31Speaker 2: a both sides equivocal answer that is meaningless and contains
- 51:35Speaker 2: no information.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Oh wow, I mean I'd need to know very specifics.
- 51:40Speaker 1: But yeah, I think the short answer is yes, he
- 51:42Speaker 1: would be able to do that if you want. He
- 51:44Speaker 1: would have an endless supply of money to do it.
- 51:47Speaker 1: The owners wouldn't do it profit right, Yeah, it all
- 51:51Speaker 1: depends on how much you're willing to lose.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Yeah, retically he could do it, But you need a
- 51:56Speaker 2: lot of buy in from the players to spread that
- 51:58Speaker 2: money out and all that stuff.
- 52:00Speaker 3: Like he said, you'd have to spread it out decades
- 52:02Speaker 3: if you're spending.
- 52:03Speaker 1: It all run on the cap. The players would get it.
- 52:06Speaker 1: The players don't get mad, they don't care about your
- 52:08Speaker 1: cap situations.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I'm trying to think of like what they
- 52:16Speaker 2: couldn't get because like, let's just say that they all
- 52:19Speaker 2: got it in a lump sum in one year, and
- 52:23Speaker 2: so you were spending a billion dollars, but it was
- 52:26Speaker 2: spread out over ten years. You know, like, is there
- 52:32Speaker 2: a limit to how much you can give a player
- 52:34Speaker 2: in one year?
- 52:35Speaker 5: No, I mean, like what you're would be talking about it.
- 52:39Speaker 5: That kind of exists with voided years in contracts. And
- 52:43Speaker 5: so if you have owners with deep pockets that are
- 52:46Speaker 5: willing to do it that way and structure it that
- 52:49Speaker 5: way all of the all of the way that for
- 52:51Speaker 5: the most part that its structured has to do with
- 52:53Speaker 5: like real cash on hand and having liquid cash to
- 52:57Speaker 5: pay out the money early on in the contract, yep,
- 52:59Speaker 5: which isn't not every owner has it or is willing
- 53:03Speaker 5: to do that.
- 53:03Speaker 1: And that might be an extreme, you know, like a
- 53:06Speaker 1: billion dollars every year. And I understand what he's saying,
- 53:10Speaker 1: and yeah, maybe you wouldn't be able to do that
- 53:12Speaker 1: even if you had unlimited liquid cash. But the short
- 53:17Speaker 1: answer is you could spend wildly over the cap every
- 53:20Speaker 1: year if you wanted to.
- 53:21Speaker 5: I mean, New Orleans does it their cap complying for
- 53:23Speaker 5: the first time in years now, they finally cleaned it up,
- 53:26Speaker 5: but they went a whole I want to say, almost
- 53:29Speaker 5: half decade where they were always in the red, they'd
- 53:32Speaker 5: find their way back to zero somehow and then you know,
- 53:35Speaker 5: just make it under the cap in time. But it
- 53:38Speaker 5: theoretically Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, they could go buy a team,
- 53:42Speaker 5: and they could they could you know, mortgage it just
- 53:46Speaker 5: the way that anybody else.
- 53:47Speaker 1: It was interesting, like if someone like that wanted to
- 53:51Speaker 1: get in the game, I wonder how that would work.
- 53:55Speaker 1: I wonder how those kinds of guys would, you know,
- 53:57Speaker 1: like Cuban wasn't when he bought the Mavericks, you know,
- 54:02Speaker 1: he sort of became Cuban, you know, like that's a
- 54:07Speaker 1: different kind of wealth, you know, like you saw I
- 54:10Speaker 1: think there was a list of the I don't know
- 54:13Speaker 1: whatever three hundred wealthiest people and the owner you know,
- 54:20Speaker 1: sports owners were not really anywhere near the top.
- 54:24Speaker 9: No.
- 54:25Speaker 2: But even then, like you don't have the money until
- 54:28Speaker 2: you cash it in, so you can be worth as
- 54:31Speaker 2: much as you know, I'm ever of billions, but it's
- 54:34Speaker 2: on paper until you sell your stock or sell your
- 54:38Speaker 2: company or all that, you know, And that's what that's
- 54:43Speaker 2: where the liquidity comes in.
- 54:44Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, this is all about you know, in order
- 54:48Speaker 5: to really circumvent the cap, you need to be able
- 54:51Speaker 5: to write a check for We just signed Millon Williams
- 54:54Speaker 5: for you know, one hundred million dollars and he's got
- 54:56Speaker 5: forty of it signed that you guaranteed at signing, and
- 54:59Speaker 5: we can write that check today in hand of forty
- 55:01Speaker 5: million dollars. Not everybody tanners or is willing to do that.

- 57:18Speaker 10: The Crown is yours gambling problem called one hundred twenty
- 57:21Speaker 10: one plus.
- 57:21Speaker 4: Agent eligibility varies by jurisdiction. Well, the New England picture,
- 57:35Speaker 4: all right, we're kicking things off here with quarterbacks and
- 57:37Speaker 4: wide receivers, guys.
- 57:39Speaker 1: I don't think we need to spend a lot of
- 57:40Speaker 1: time on the quarterback.
- 57:41Speaker 4: Of course, pault they signed Tommy DeVito's, he's signed up
- 57:44Speaker 4: Josh Dobbs with Drake May. We got the depth chart
- 57:47Speaker 4: taken care of five.
- 57:48Speaker 1: So if you're going to look at this from a
- 57:50Speaker 1: patriot's perspective, then you probably you're probably said you probably
- 57:56Speaker 1: don't need any more. Now, if they decide to move
- 57:59Speaker 1: on from Don and they're looking for another sort of
- 58:02Speaker 1: developmental quarterback in the draft, maybe a day three pick,
- 58:05Speaker 1: they have a bunch of Day three guys. I don't
- 58:09Speaker 1: know if there's a lot here for you necessarily, I
- 58:12Speaker 1: don't know where Drew Aller is going to go, the
- 58:14Speaker 1: kid out of Penn State, who I do think has
- 58:16Speaker 1: some tools, as Evan would call him tools, but he
- 58:21Speaker 1: has not really put it together at the college level
- 58:24Speaker 1: in terms of refinement and consistency. But if you could
- 58:27Speaker 1: get him, you know, sometime and you know, like I
- 58:29Speaker 1: don't know, around four, round five, you know, probably five,
- 58:35Speaker 1: maybe that would be a guy that would intrigue me.
- 58:37Speaker 1: But most of the rest of these guys, you know,
- 58:39Speaker 1: Tailing Green, you know, unbelievable combined, but not really a quarterback.
- 58:44Speaker 4: If anybody stands out like lower end guys before we
- 58:46Speaker 4: get into the yeah, I mean, I think Allen.
- 58:48Speaker 5: Is probably gonna be a top one hundred pick still,
- 58:50Speaker 5: So that's third for me, maybe fourth round.
- 58:53Speaker 6: Maybe he gets into the fourth round.
- 58:54Speaker 5: You mentioned Tayloring Green, I think the biggest thing with him,
- 58:57Speaker 5: and not to no disrespect because I think he can
- 58:59Speaker 5: play quarterback. But you know, he comes in and you
- 59:02Speaker 5: draft him plays quarterback at first, you test him out
- 59:05Speaker 5: there if it doesn't work out there, he's such an
- 59:07Speaker 5: exceptional athlete, like is he a Terrell Prior type.
- 59:09Speaker 6: That can maybe change positions and be a wide receiver.
- 59:12Speaker 6: I don't mean to do that.
- 59:13Speaker 5: I think it's disrespectful sometimes when people do that, But
- 59:16Speaker 5: it's just.
- 59:16Speaker 1: The exceptional athlete, no doubt.
- 59:19Speaker 6: He's an exceptional athlete, no doubt.
- 59:21Speaker 5: Now in terms of you know, deeper guys, I think
- 59:25Speaker 5: what the question is is that you're asking is are
- 59:27Speaker 5: you really drafting somebody to.
- 59:29Speaker 6: Be the backup, a pure backup?
- 59:32Speaker 5: Like, again, no disrespect Chase Daniel, right Like, are you
- 59:35Speaker 5: drafting someone Brian Hoyer that's going to be the backup for.
- 59:38Speaker 6: The next ten years?
- 59:39Speaker 5: Or are you looking still for Joe Milton who has
- 59:41Speaker 5: a little bit more upside and a little bit more
- 59:44Speaker 5: of those traits. I would say Taylor Green's probably more
- 59:46Speaker 5: in the Joe Milton category. You know, guy like Diego
- 59:50Speaker 5: Pavia from Vanderbilt is maybe more in I think this
- 59:53Speaker 5: guy's going to have a ten year NFL career as
- 59:55Speaker 5: a as a backup quarterback.
- 59:57Speaker 2: You know.
- 59:57Speaker 6: I think that's really where you're kind of at with
- 59:59Speaker 6: that class.
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: Is are we at the point now, which I think
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: we probably are with Drake May that he's the starter
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: forever as long as they'll be a New England Patriot
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: as long as they can keep him a New England Patriot.
- 1:00:09Speaker 6: So you might as well, you know, look at a.
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: Caide club Nick from Clemson or Diego Pavia from Vanderbilt
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: or one of these guys that has a chance to
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: be a long term backup.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: All right, well let's let's jump into the top two guys,
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: because tis I mean, Fernana Mendoza probably gonna be the
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: first overall pick.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Could chance the Patriots see him this year, you know
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: with the Raiders.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: And then Ty Simpson another guy who probably first rounder,
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: but more maybe more of a developmental guy. We know
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: teams like the Jets need a quarterback. But let's just
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: start with Mendoza. What a year National Championship heisman. I mean,
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: he saw him at the combine, looks the part completely
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: under control.
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: He's gonna be a good player. Yeah, I just take
- 1:00:44Speaker 9: him for the leadership. You know, he's a big locker
- 1:00:46Speaker 9: room guy. Led that team, really changed the culture there
- 1:00:50Speaker 9: with their coach. Yeah, probably going to be the Raiders guy.
- 1:00:54Speaker 9: I think they're gonna have to steal with him. Something
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: that's interested with Mendoza is I'd like to see where
- 1:00:58Speaker 9: you think he would have went last year like with Award,
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: I just don't know.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: I think the number one overall.
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: Yeah, the Drake May draft is probably more of a
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: conversation between those three guys. But I think we would
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: have been having a conversation of those four guys, Like
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: I think he would have been in the same tier
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: as Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, and Drake May.
- 1:01:15Speaker 6: Now would he have had the.
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: Same exact college football season if all those guys were
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: in college football still, and you know, would he been
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: the Heisman Trophy winner? I guess maybe he would have
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: had more competition for something like that. But if he
- 1:01:28Speaker 5: had the same exact season he had it Indiana last
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: year with that class, he would have been the fourth
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: horseman there, you know, with the group. So he's he's
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: really good. He's going to be a really good player,
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: I think in the league.
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you think?
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Probably the Tye Simpson and Alabama So I think both
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: of these guys are underrated Athletically, I think Mendoza shows
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: you that he's he's a quarterback. He's not just sort
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: of back there throwing the ball. He can move around
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and run when he's not going to make a living
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: doing that seven rushing touchdowns last year, And I think
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Simpson is a little bit more of a projection because
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: he didn't the first of all, he didn't play as much.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: And if you look at the first half of last
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: season for Alabama, and I think I said this to you,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Evan during the course of the season. At one point,
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: I was like, he's the best quarterback in the country.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Then all of a sudden it kind of changed and
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: he didn't play as well in the second half of
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: the season. I think he got beat up a little bit.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I think he was dealing with some injuries, but there's
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: there's some skill there to work with. He has a
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: really really and I in my view when NFL arm,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: you know, he's not like Drake may or Josh Allen,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: like Whether Howitzer or anything like that. But I think
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: he quote unquote can make all the throws. I like
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: both of these guys. I like mendoz Are a lot
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: more because there's been a lot more production and consistency.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: But I wouldn't sleep on ty Simpson. I think someone
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: at the end of the first round one of these teams.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: I know people have sort of dismissed this but like
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I think you'd make a ton of sense for a
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: team like the Rams, who are going to need a
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: replacement for Stafford soon. You completely take off the no
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: possibility of him having to play in you know, one
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: unless Stafford gets hurt. I think that's the kind of
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: development that could lead to him having a successful career.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: I think the interesting thing you said there about ty Simpson,
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: we can talk about him as a player.
- 1:03:13Speaker 6: I mean, I think his best.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: Attribute is probably his ability to throw a touch and
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: timing to the intermediate deep part of the field. He
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: throws those nice catch a bowl pillows you know that
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: hit guys in stride. You know, watching guys like Jeremy
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: Bernard for example, who we're going to talk about here. Yeah,
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: in a second, with the wide receivers, you know, he
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: would run those crossing routes and ty Simpson would put
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: it right on him in stride. If you ask him
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: to try to drive the ball down the field, especially
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: outside the numbers, it gets a little iffy. And there
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: were times where he's throwing the far hash and he's
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: trying to get the ball out outside the numbers and
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: receiver it's it's a you know, he's throwing skip passes,
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: you know, to his receivers, like those are the things
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: that you worry a little bit with him. But I
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: want to more talk about what you just mentioned. The
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: back half of the first round. The Patriots are sitting
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: there at thirty one. We obviously know the Patriots are
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: not taking a quarterback at thirty one. So is this
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: a situation where somebody at the top of the second
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: round might want to come up and grab Ty Simpson
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: before the night is out and the Patriots might have
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: a trade partner there and a trade back kind of
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: candidate situation. I think there are a handful of teams
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: that could be, you know, in the market for a
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: quarterback like Ty Simpson that makes some sense to come
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: up and get him, you know, from the second round,
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: top of the second round, to come back up to
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: thirty one.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: All right, well, let's move on to wide receiver because
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: that's a position that hey, we always need, right, We're
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: always looking for the number and one ride receiver. I
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: think the interesting thing now, of course, as we said
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: at the top of the show, is that they've now
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: signed Romeo Dobbs, who seems to be a one for
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: one replacement for what Stefon Diggs, and the search now
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: continues for an outside receiver.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: You know, of course, Kayshan.
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: BOUTI had a really good year, really good hands, nice
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: connection down the field. So I found myself over the
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: last few days kind of gravitating more towards the outside guys.
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: And I know there's a different variety. And you know,
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: first I'll just rattle off the top three names of
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: Jordan Tyson, Cornell Tat, and Machayelem And I feel like
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: those guys probably going to go above where the Patriots
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: are going to pick and I'm going to go. And
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: I know I'm going to get some pushback on this one,
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: and I'm ready for it. But Denzel Boston, I can't.
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: I know, not a burner, and we need speed and
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: that kind of thing. But I just feel like this
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: guy is a stud. And how many times do you
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: have to take a chance on a guy before you
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: find one that, even though he doesn't have speed, his
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: size and his strength just overshadow that to me.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Big, powerful hands, you know.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: Strong outside presence, a number of different things that you
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: can do with him, maybe not the breakaway speed, but
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: return punts.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: You know, has a little bit of wiggle to him.
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: So I would just kind of start with him because
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: I feel like he's in that area of the late
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: twenties and I, you know, we can talk about his
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: speed and I get why people might be afraid of him.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: And now great moments in.
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: History.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: He never came to Northwestern. Oh they did. They played
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Ohio State my sophomore yearage got oh oh yeah, I
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: to it. What the signs did you have? Like Herbstreet
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: was that Herbstreet was at Northwest. The guest picker was
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Brett Hosberger because he's an alum. He actually got kicked off.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: I went for her get on.
- 1:06:18Speaker 6: Well, I was like, you could see I think you
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: are looking alive.
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: Dead shot up, but if you look.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we were there. Yeah yeah.
- 1:06:26Speaker 6: I also I was very excited.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I uh just wanted to stay around after and ask
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: questions and you wanted to grab some tripods. WHOA what
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: are we doing?
- 1:06:40Speaker 9: That's another great moment from.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: All right back here at Patriots on filtered eight five
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: five past five hundred is the Hotline podcast at Patriots
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: dot com is the email address kind of a free
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: form Tuesday jazz. Honestly, if you were yeah, what a
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: you know, school n i L Talk Youth Sports.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Salary call Swing Tackles.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Nathan writes in He's from Iowa. Want to give a
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: quick shout out to Evan for recognizing Dom Orange from
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: Iowa State as someone who just graduateds someone from just
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: just graduated from there. He's probably going to be one
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: of the last Cyclones drafted for a while because Matt
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: Campbell is going to Penn State.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: Now to my question, do you guys watch faith in
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: the replacement?
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: No?
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: I know, Matt Campbell's very good.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: Do you guys think it's a little weird that the
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: Eagles GM was asking for a first and the third
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: for a J.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: Brown?
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Considering that's what he paid for him a few years
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: ago when he got him from the Titans. I feel
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: as if his price would only go down, even if
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: it was just a little bit, considering he's aging.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I don't think it's weird.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: It's all the negotiation.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: Yeah, where else are you going to start?
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: I think you're looking at what did Waddle just get for?
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: You know, it was.
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: First and a bunch of stuff, first, third and the
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: fourth round pick swap.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: Or something like that.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: Yeah, something like that.
- 1:08:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: So I mean there's like a year difference between Wattle
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: and Brown m like this, like, if you want a player,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: but you only want him, you know, if you don't
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: have to give anything up, then you don't really want
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: him that much. And I think Howie Roseman might end
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: up having to trade this guy. I don't know, maybe
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: maybe he'll end up having to take pennies on the dollar.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: But I think the fact that he's holding out as
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: long as he is, and you know, this whole June
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: first thing, I don't think he's just going to give
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: him away.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: Did you hear Schefter's report, you know, quote report where
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: he kind of stated what everybody knew but put it
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: in one little package. I don't know, he came out,
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: you know, one of his videos and he just said that, uh,
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: you know, the Patriots could still be in the running,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: you know, after June first, but things happened before then
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: that could take them out of the running depending on
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: who they draft, and blah blah blah blah.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: You know, well, I just think that's the hardest part,
- 1:09:09Speaker 6: right is, Like.
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: If they don't draft somebody, does that mean they have
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: aj Brown in the bag, Or if they do draft him,
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: doesn't mean they don't.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Well, he also said, and there's no way that there's
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: an under the table. Yeah, because of all the problems
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: the Patriots had with spygate and the flay Gate, they
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: would never do that.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: Okay, did somebody say that they did do that?
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: Like he's gotta was the handshake thing that I not
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: that it's news, but like it was news. Yeah, No, Jason,
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: Like I have a hard time all this is just
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: being regurgitated in different ways over and over again.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: But but I don't think that that would be that's
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: not even in the same.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: But why would why would the Eagles, you know, do
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: that with the Patriots? Why not if you're gonna hold out,
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: hold out, maybe somebody after June first, I'll offer you
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: even more.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: So, I would say after the draft. Yeah, like wait
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: to see what everybody has after the draft.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: But like, why would you already have a deal in play?
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Because the Eagles have already talked to everybody, and they
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: know what the best offer they have on the table
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: is right now, they're going to hold out. If June
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: first is important to them, they'll hold out to June first,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: But then they'll also wait and reassess after the draft.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: Because someone like if if Deuce is right, and they
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: end up drafting a guy in the first round. If
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: the Patriots draft ends al Boston, then maybe they're not
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: as willing to give up, you know, draft.
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: But that's like why, you know, Duce and I are
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: going to do mock our first mock drafts this week,
- 1:10:37Speaker 5: and it's so hard to determine whether or not you
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: take a receiver in the top one hundred because if
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: you then also then go out and trade for AJ
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: Brown or you have that traded you know, pending agreement
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: or whatever, like you already even if you just trade
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: for AJ Brown, you already have seven receivers on the
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: roster that have legitimate chances of making the team, and
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: four or five of those guys are locks essentially, And
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: so then you're like really getting into an area where
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: you've invested. Now, you traded for a guy, you signed
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: a guy to a pretty big contract in Romeo Dobbs,
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: and you drafted one high two years in a row,
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: with Kyle Williams included in that as well. It's a
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: lot to invest in one position if that's the route
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: that you're going to go.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: And the other part is, you know, with the whole
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: draft compensation. So if you're going to wait until June first,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: then that those picks, in my view, and I think
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: most people's view, become more valuable because the twenty seven
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: draft is considered to be stronger.
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: I think that's the most fascinating part of it to me,
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: because you know, it's the thirty first pick in this
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: year's draft. You don't know what the pick is for
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: the Patriots in twenty twenty seven. So if I'm the Patriots,
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: I'm saying, well, we think we're going to be a
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: good team, but if Drake May gets hurt, then we're
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: gonna be giving you a top ten pick. R You know,
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: there's always that unknown, and so I wonder if that
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: actually hurts the compensation a little bit, because usually when
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: you know what you're getting, it's a little bit more
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: easier to the value.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Do you see this this story they're showing the Maryland
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: women's coach. So the player that she's yelling at went
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: to my kids elementary school year older. Yeah, she's a
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: year older than Will. Wow, she's a terrific player. She
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: played she played it too. Now she transferred to Maryland
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: because she wanted coaching, and I yell she wanted harder coaching.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, she wanted more cash. Chris and Raleigh, North Carolina. Question,
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: how might a post June first trade for AJ Brown
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: affect the Patriots approach to twenty sixth draft? If the
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: cost is twenty seven first and fourth, for example, how
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: does that change the approach this year?
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: More likely to spend.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Premium asset on future right tackle? Might the strategy shift
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: to spend both years picks?
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: Well, this is exactly what we the dock draft exercise
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: really is. And at this point, and I just said it,
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: like they really feel strongly that they're going to have
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: AJ Brown on this team by September. I don't see
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: any reason to blow another top one hundred pick on
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: a wide receiver.
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: In a side or pet peeve or a comment. Despite
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: plenty of coverage, the detailed discussion about an AJ Brown
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: trade has been oddly sloppy. It's a top news story,
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: but almost every take bails out three to four sentences
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: in with some lame I won't pretend to know all
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: the salary cap details, escape Hatch.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: I don't know what he's really talking about.
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: Well, I can tell you the salary cap details. So
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: it's going to give you a popsicle headache. And so
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: I just decided to tell you June first is the
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: day to know. And just trust me that it's an
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: important factor in all of this. If I want me
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: to outline exactly what it all is, we can try
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: to do all the math in our head and figure
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: it out.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: The other stuff that might be of interest here is yesterday.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I know there was this sort of ground swell around
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: AJ Brown that he's looking for another deal. I'm sure
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: he is so like that that could complicate it further too.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: And you got some intel this weekend, Paul, you were
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: doing some digging on A. J.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Brown.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: It wasn't on vacation for me.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: It was the people I spoke to in Philly, you
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: know the Philly Philly around with the I have some
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Philly people, no fit, total fans. Uh, they're all in
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: on A J. Brown. They think he's terrific. They they
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: they want him to go because they feel like the
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: team has been mistreating him. Jalen Hurts is the problem
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: according to my sources. And uh, they think he has
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: plenty left in his tank and he he will be great.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: He will be great elsewhere. So there was no guy,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: I said, the knees not a part, No, no, no
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: problem at all. This is all this is. He's he's
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: miserable and it's all because it hurts, and he blamed hurts.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: His malaise is Evidently I think he's recently gotten married
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: and there's been this another voice. Yeah, but I don't
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: think Hailey Steinfeld is telling josh Allen not to run. Evidently,
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: I mean because Josh Allen ran all over the place
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: last year. Evidently Jalen Hurts has been sort of advised
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: to protect himself more and not run as much, and
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: he hasn't been as good as a result. It's a
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: little bit of a just hel thing going.
- 1:15:12Speaker 5: On there are like there is an interesting conversation with
- 1:15:17Speaker 5: aj Brown about some of the decline and production. Specifically,
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: I would say in yards after the catch, and this
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: is a guy that used to be a dynamic ball
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: carrier in one of the best yards after the catch
- 1:15:29Speaker 5: receivers in football. In the last two three years there
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: has been kind of a steady decline. Now is that
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: the routes he's being targeted on the offense? Jalen Hurts, Like,
- 1:15:39Speaker 5: who's the billion There's probably a lot of context in
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: film watching that needs to decide.
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: What those numbers are.
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: But I think that one of the things could be
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: health and wear and tear and all that good stuff too.
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: It's all a possibility.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: Jeff and Canada on youth sports. He thinks the decline
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: in youth sports can mostly be a tribute to money,
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: those few that have it and the rest of us
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: who don't. My son is a senior in high school.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: He's played three sports all four years. He's had one
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: winning season out of a possible twelve. The school he
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: attends is filled with ordinary people earning two incomes to
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: have a decent life. We can't compete against schools that
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: are upper middle class towns where their son or daughter
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: has been enrolled in ten thousand dollars in camps and
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: trips each year to get better. So many kids are saying,
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: why bother if you have no chance to win. We
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: need to start separating divisions and conferences not based on
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: school enrollment, but by affluence. It's the same thing that
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: is ruining NCAA, particularly the men's basketball tournament. I'd love
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: to hear Paul's take on that too. Maybe Christian in
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: LA could help support youth athletics for regular people by
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Paul of decent use Toyota.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: I strongly agree with the college part of the affluents,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: but not the high school. I don't think there's any
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: correlation between good programs based on affluence. A matter of fact,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: in Massachusetts, the more tony and affluent the suburb, it's
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: generally the smaller the school and the lesser of the athletics.
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: I don't know about that. It wasn't the case, right
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: Sharon and Walles.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: It's a little different.
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: With yeah, thank you, thank you.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: I'm like, it was like the no.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: Well, because but lacrosse isn't offered at every school.
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: No it is now, isn't it.
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: I mean it's grown a lot. Oh god, No, it wasn't.
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: I wasn't in my high school initially, when I know
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: it's there now.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: But yeah, like I grew up around the city, none
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: of them haven't nothing like literally none now. Now I'm
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: just thinking about, like, you know, some of the cities
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: and towns around where I live, Like Lindfield is far
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: more affluent than Peabody. Peebody would kill Lindfield and everything. Yeah,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: you know, in general terms, I'm like, I'm not there's
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: there's different sports, you know. Might yeah, but like in general,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: in general terms, when Peeboty's normal, like a normal team,
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: they would beat them in boys and girls basketball, they
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: would beat Lynnfield in baseball, they would be certainly Winfield
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: in foot No, Pebody's a bigger school. That's why they
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: go by enrollment, not affluents. That's my whole point. Yeah,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: like they just have it's a much higher level. You know.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: Pebody's a Division one slash two school. Linfield's like a
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Division four five school.
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: I do think there's a something to be said for
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: the sports though specific Whereas you know, basketball programs you
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: need fewer kids. You don't need a large budget to
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: be good at basketball, hockey teams, lacrosse teams. You know,
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: I look at Walpole and Sharon. I mean, Sharon probably
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: more affluent than Walpole with Walpole, same thing.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: Much bigger school, bigger school.
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: But you know, but they have no problem with sports
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: in that town either, you know.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: So it's the smaller sports like hockey, basketball. The better
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: schools are the private schools because they basically recruit.
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: But a lot of people felt Canton was the best
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: hockey team in the in the state, this year, and
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: I mean that was you know, in their D two school,
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: you know, public school.
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: So I mean I get it. In general, the private
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: schools have an advantage in all sports.
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I mean Saint John's Prep is Yeah, I
- 1:19:15Speaker 5: mean our butts for four years and everything.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: But it's the biggest. It's also the biggest school. You know,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: maybe Brockton is bigger. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: I I was going down this rabbit hole about the
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: soccer in America because like, I can't really figure out
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: why we can't get better on the national level at soccer,
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: like US soccer and a lot of the stuff, and
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: I know nothing about it. I'm just telling you what
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: I read a lot of this stuff was that in
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: other countries it's not expensive to play soccer, and for
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: some reason, in the United States, they've turned soccer into
- 1:19:47Speaker 5: this like posh like club thing, and so now like
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: you have to be paying all this money to be
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: able to be on club teams and travel and all
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: this kind of stuff.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: What I will say, though, is when it comes to
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: the great athletes, regardless of where you are on the
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: socioeconomic scale, if you are a great athlete with all
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: these different programs, you get discovered.
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: Right, They're on the lookout everywhere for talent, right.
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: But I think it's like about you know, what, are
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: the parents wanting the kids to play at the young
- 1:20:19Speaker 5: age when they don't have completely It's not.
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: Even up to the parent.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: It's these guys go into the living room and tell
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: the mother we can do this.
- 1:20:27Speaker 5: We can do this maybe at a certain age, but
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: the kid has to start playing soccer at some point
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: at five years old.
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: I'm talking pretty young.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: So my thing is, and again I'm like you, this
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: is anecdotal. I don't have the answers, but I I've
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: always sort of been one of these people. Worldwide, soccer
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: is the number one sport. So if you are the
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: best athlete in your village, you're playing soccer in this country.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: That's not the case, that's right, But so what do
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: you think, like how good do you think a guy
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: like Kobe Bryant would have been at soccer? Like an
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: athlete of like Lebron James, Like these guys could dominate soccer.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: Maybe if they played soccer when they were eight years
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: old they a little yeah, but like okay, so let's
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: go it's like a small ever, you know, Stefan Diggs,
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: like with that kind of athleticism and quickness and shifty
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: this year, you don't think he could dominate. But maybe
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: they don't play soccer here. It's not the number one sport.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: But I would say funnel into their their sports that
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: they they want to make millions and millions of dollars.
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: In but they're good at But like we were, We've
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: won just won the gold medal in hockey, we won
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: the gold medal in basketball. The last time we competed
- 1:21:43Speaker 5: on the world stage, they were just in the final
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: of the World Baseball Classic on both sides. And so
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: like the only sport, major sport that we can't compete
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: at that top level at for some.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: Reason, the only ones make millions and millions of dollars.
- 1:21:58Speaker 6: Well you well, but you do overseas, So like it's
- 1:22:00Speaker 6: you don't hear.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: Well, think about it again, do you want to do that?
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: Or do you want to play in the United States?
- 1:22:05Speaker 5: If if Real Madrid is going to pay you thirty
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: million dollars a year to play for them, then I'm
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: sure people will move to Spain.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: Would you rather make thirty million dollars a year and
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: play in Los Angeles? I guess that's the choice that
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: you're making.
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: I just find it odd, Like you can if we're
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: great at hockey, we're great at basketball, we're great at baseball,
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: we're great at all these other major sports, and then
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: there's this one sport that would be lucky if we
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: make it to the knockout stage in the world coming.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: So and again. But I would just say, there's no
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: such thing as like like an endless supply of talent.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: So you just said it. We dominated in this, We
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: dominated in that. We dominated, Well, we don't dominate in soccer.
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: You know, it's not just an unlimited amount of athletes.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: Our athletes are all dominating in all these other sports.
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: Canada is not it's not a huge country, but it's
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: not a small country. But they funnel their kids to hockey.
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: If all those kids that played hockey played soccer, they'd
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: probably be.
- 1:23:00Speaker 6: But Canada is starting like they're Canada is really good
- 1:23:04Speaker 6: at basketball.
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: Now they're getting they're getting good in basketball.
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: Ye too, Yeah, so like they're there. It's starting to
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: happen a little bit with Dad. I don't know what
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: is driving that, but you know, obviously the MVP of
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: the league is Canadian. So like you know, like they
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: are starting to get a little bit better at that.
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: I just find it like I think that this is
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: I'm sure Paul is right, but I think this is
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: also just like infrastructure in the way that we.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: I think it's cultural.
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: I think it's cultural too, like our country doesn't love
- 1:23:31Speaker 4: the sport of soccer, right like Canada loves hockey. It's
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: part of their fabric. I mean, football is part of
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: our fabric. Baseball is part of our part of our fabric.
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: Soccer just has never gotten there. The American people just
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: have never fallen to the participation in soccer at the
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: youth level. I don't know, it still does dwarf all
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: the other sports. It was always the feeder sport grown
- 1:23:51Speaker 4: up for me that everybody played soccer, but then you
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: went off.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: To but you went off to play the sexier sports.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Our culture was a couple. I mean all the stuff
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: I've heard, you know, and I know Fred has two
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Like since I was a little kid, Soccer's coming. It's
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: going to be the number one sport. It's the number
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: one sport worldwide. Yeah, And for us it was always
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: like I didn't I never played, but I know a
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: lot of people who did play because it was the
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: sport that you could get into the earliest, like they
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: would jump in. And that's why I think the youth
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: soccer numbers were bigger than everything else. And then, like
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Mike said, and once you played for a couple of
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: years and you realized it's a lot of running and
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: it's not all that fun, and you move on. And again,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: that might be an indictment of the US in our
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: you know, maybe our culture and whatnot. I'm not saying
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: that we're right. I'm just saying that's kind of what
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: it is.
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: It's just too bad because you obviously we're hosting the
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: World Cup in a couple of months, and I do
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: think watching people rally around the hockey team, watching people
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: rally around the baseball team, the basketball team, whenever these
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: things come up, Like if the US and men's national
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: team was good at soccer, we'd.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Rally, we'd rally, we would and I wouldn't.
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: Okay, well, you're like.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: Like I just don't really enjoy the sport, but that but.
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: I I am like people would rally to it because
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: it's even if it's just for the love of the country,
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: people would rally to watching it. And supporting it, and
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: we just aren't good enough at.
- 1:25:19Speaker 6: It, right.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: I'll tell you I didn't really rally around the World
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: Baseball Classic Baseball Team.
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: I didn't. I didn't even.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: Because I just I didn't really find it all that.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: I mean, I like baseball, but it's not something I'm
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: going to go out of my way to watch a game.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: And you know, like the hockey, you know, men's and
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: women's hockey. I was glued to those games. Yeah, absolutely,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: and and you know basketball to a lesser extent, but
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: the hockey.
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: Fantastic speing Fresno back to uh Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk,
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: he said, if they if those two of the kinds
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: of people in the world engaged in the NFL hyper
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: spending exercise described earlier, with that reset player pay scale,
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: so that only the world's wealthiest would be able to
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: meet the market where it's at. This seems like a
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: good subplot for a dystopian film. Bar opening scene, a
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: six year old Musk loses at flat football but wins
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: a dream of ruining the game. I'm guessing the main
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: protection against this happening would be fewer than seventy five
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: percent of owners allowing bezos and those types to buy
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: a team. Well, I mean you have the perfect example
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: with Premier Soccer. There's no salary cap there, so it's
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: all the chics and these people with endless pockets, you know, uh, buying.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: That's the most popular sport in the world. As I'm
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: being over the head on a daily basis, you're.
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: About to take over this stadium.
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: So tomorrow, friend, Yeah, we've got friends in Brazil on Thursday.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: Here friendly, four o'clock.
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: Tip.
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: I'm very interested to see what what the atmosphere is like.
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: Is it a little of what the World Cup is
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: going to be like?
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: Oh, it'll be festive. Yeah, yeah, we did.
- 1:27:05Speaker 5: The World Cup games that are here, not France and Brazil,
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: so this is actually probably the best game that we're
- 1:27:10Speaker 5: getting here.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: We'll be doing our show.
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: It'll be like pregaming here.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: Robin Coventry talking about flag football. Here in the UK,
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: we've seen a growth in walking football and walking rugby.
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: This likely stems from the fact that many of us
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: continue to play casually into our thirties and forties, then
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: need to ease into less intensive versions. There were also
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: fourteen official tiers of football. I guess he means soccer
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: top four professional. The rest are non league, but any
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: team could theoretically get promoted to the Premier League, so
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: plenty of opportunities to play competitively. Does anything similar to
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: walking football exist over there?
- 1:27:49Speaker 6: Pickleball?
- 1:27:50Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:27:51Speaker 6: Right, The way he was describing it made me think
- 1:27:53Speaker 6: of pickleball.
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: I if not, could you envisage a reduced contact version
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: of football that jents of a certain age look at
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: the chaps to your left and right could participate in
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: just for fun and exercise.
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: No, I mean I had to actively abstain from the
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: media football game a couple of years ago.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: I mean they have like somebody, do they limit the
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: amount of checking?
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: Well, there's no check.
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: Yeh, that's like it's a great I mean there's a
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: lot of old guy leagues that are great low impact skating,
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: but with.
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: Football at break tack tackle football would not be something
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: I do.
- 1:28:30Speaker 5: But even you could do flag like they're planting and
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: the cutting and like build for that anymore.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: That's why I didn't play in the media game. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: I mean like blow my achilles and I'm not going
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: to do it again.
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: Literally, somebody literally.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: Did first interception this stadium. Don't forget that it was.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: When you did blow out your achilles you came back quick?
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: Was that because you didn't well?
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: No, and it was it was because I had the
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: brief surgery that night. Did you know?
- 1:29:04Speaker 6: So who's who came back faster? Jason Tatum or.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: Paul obviously to play in an NBA game that I
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: would not have been able to play in. That's a
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: little bit unfair, But yeah, I mean.
- 1:29:13Speaker 6: It's it was very similarities.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Ten months is very much average. It's not like super fast,
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: It's not certainly, wouldn't blame him for taking too long.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: It's right, it's right, it's right, right amount of time.
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: Uh oh, Paul and Evan might take exception of this.
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: I think Joe and Michigan says Jasn is good, but
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: a good cover guy seemed to take him away.
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: Our boy Gonzo did that in the Super Bowl?
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Is it me?
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: Or is Rabel cleaning house a wee bit too much?
- 1:29:46Speaker 6: Those are two very different things.
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about the JSN thing already.
- 1:29:52Speaker 6: We talked a little bit about the uh.
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: House.
- 1:29:56Speaker 5: I talked a little bit with our guy Mike Grease
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: yesterday at BC at the Pro Day about this, and
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: you know, just all of the kind of culture guys
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: that have left, you know, the Garrett Bradberry's and you know,
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: he even mentioned that, you know, Jelani Tavai like them,
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: facetiming Jelani to Vai in the locker room when his
- 1:30:14Speaker 5: significant other was going through the tough time during the
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: season last year. And I thought, Mike, I hope he
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: doesn't mind me sharing. But I thought he brought up
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: a great point, which was that maybe Rabel feels like
- 1:30:24Speaker 5: you can only create that atmosphere once and that each
- 1:30:27Speaker 5: team kind of has its own DNA and its own thing,
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: and like trying to recreate the quote unquote magic from
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: last year is unrealistic.
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: You wait to see what this team's like. Yeah, you
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: go with that.
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: You know that the leadership emerges organically.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: And I would just say, you know, I was talking
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: about this with Mike yesterday. I think they signed they
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: signed twelve guys that made the team in free agency
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: last year. Six of them are gone. I thought, on
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: the surface, I really like that from a Patriots PERSPECTI
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: because I think one of the reasons why building a
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: team don't get fixated on the semantics, but building a
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: team through free agency doesn't generally work. You get the
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: bump and then it doesn't last. And I think the
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: reason that that happens is you sign guys and generally
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: the best you get out of a free agent is
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: right away. Yeah, and it only goes the other way
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: because the guys are a little older and they're not
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: on the way up. Like there's not a lot of
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: year six jumps, year seven jumps. So I kind of
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: like in theory that he's moving on from some of
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: these guys. Now, we'll see if it ends up working,
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: because the emailers concerns are right, Like, you had some
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: culture guys, and you know, maybe the guys that you're
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: replacing them with will be you know, Kevin Byert has
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: a reputation to being exactly that kind of guy. So
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: maybe you've lost nothing there, but maybe you have.
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: You know, Bill Belichick looked at this kind of stuff.
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: I'm just curious.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: I would say he won. Bill Belichick ran it back,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: you mean twenty two, Like yes, like after that twenty
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: one free agent class, like all those guys, you know,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: oh yeah, we're gonna We're gonna do it again.
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: And just in terms of like building leadership on a team,
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: you know, is it. Does he take strides to do it?
- 1:32:15Speaker 4: Did he go out and try to make sure you
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: had a veteran press?
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: Ye?
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: You know, you remember when the big thing in the
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: draft was they draft every guy they drafted was a captain.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: I forget what yeah that was, but you know most
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: of those guys are not in the league.
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: Self policing, locker room leadership, Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: I just wonder, you know, it's just interesting to compare it,
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: you know to like Jack Gibbons, Like that was a
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: guy that was such a rabel guy and was one
- 1:32:44Speaker 5: of his guys, and they just moved on.
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: You know, they could have easily resigned Jack Gibbons.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: I mean they didn't even offer him a restricted free agent,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: like he even the like the writer first refusal level,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: like the lowest level.
- 1:32:58Speaker 5: And it's just interesting that that they kind of feel
- 1:33:01Speaker 5: like we the magic of last year in terms of
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: the camaraderie in the locker room.
- 1:33:05Speaker 6: Is that was last year and it's just.
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: Not falling in love. I mean, I think we all
- 1:33:10Speaker 4: agree that that Gibbons played pretty well, like filling in
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: for Spolene down the stretch. I think he surprised me
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: a little bit with some of his I.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Thought in terms of like a backup linebacker who's really
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: a special teamer. I thought when he actually played linebacker,
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: he played it at a pretty good level comparatively to
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: other guys that have been in that role when they've
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: been forced into action, and you be like, oh, that guy,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: he's a special team of for I didn't think that
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: with Jack Gibbons. I thought he did pretty well. Now,
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: maybe kJ Britt can be a similar kind of guy. Yeah,
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: he's a special teamer really, and when he plays, maybe
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: he can give you the same level that Jack Gibbons can't.
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: It's a good sign that not enamored and falling in
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: love with certain guys. Yes, I like him, but is
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: it good enough? Is this going to be good enough?
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: Do we need to get better? I also just find
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: it interesting that, you know, of everything they've done on defense,
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: Jones is the only guy to get more than a
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: one year deal too, you know, so it just seems
- 1:34:03Speaker 4: like they're setting the table a little bit, maybe defensively
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: to draft some guys, and you know, maybe that's part
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: of the equation, is trying to find some of these
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: leadership guys that can be groomed for those.
- 1:34:11Speaker 6: Kind of rules.
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: I definitely feels like they're trying to open roles for
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: draft picks, so that when they draft an edge rusher,
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: they draft a linebacker, they draft the safety, they draft
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: a tight end. That these guys have runway to actually
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: create roles and opportunities for themselves, whereas if you just
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: bring the whole, if you bring the band back together,
- 1:34:31Speaker 5: now you're going on a roster that has fifty out
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: of fifty three spots basically filled out, and you're competing
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: for the scraps. Yeah, and you know, maybe some of
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: these moves have allowed to do that. I The only
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: spot that I really come back to with the culture
- 1:34:44Speaker 5: thing though, is Digs like I because I don't I
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: think Romeo Dobbs might replace his production on the field,
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: but that is a very different type of personality than
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: Stefan Diggs. And it's just the whole star power that
- 1:35:00Speaker 5: Digs and the whole bravado and the energy and setting
- 1:35:04Speaker 5: the bar you know at training camp and practice every
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: single day like that is that that only comes with
- 1:35:11Speaker 5: like that type of receiver, like that alpha Diva resbatas.
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: It stood out and forged to me even more of
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: this last episode of the speeches that he gave and
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: just the intensity, the intensity in his eyes. He kind
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: of had a two in the flag football team a
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: little bit. So I don't know what it means, but
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: I just I think he's a He's a big piece.
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: Not just on the field. I think everyone focused on
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: the field production, but you know that leadership in that
- 1:35:33Speaker 4: in that locker room, especially in the myde receiver room.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: It's gonna miss him, Josh and Ohio.
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: There's been a lot of talk about Dobbs in the
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: digs role, but I wouldn't be so sure. What I'm
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: seeing is multiple guys with inside outside versatility with Booty
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: Dobbs and Williams. Is that an actual strategy team's use
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: or am I just tricking myself into believing being multiple
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: is an advantage out there?
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: Well, Diggs was a fifty to fifty inside outside guy too,
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: so it's not you know, he wasn't pigeonholed to play.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: Like did you know that moved him to the slot.
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: You know, playing he played more slot than most, but
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: it was the worst.
- 1:36:12Speaker 6: They moved him around too.
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: I think that you know, balance within the room, Like
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: if we have five eligibles and all of them are
- 1:36:21Speaker 5: threats to catch the ball at any time, and all
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: of them can kind of make plays. And there's that
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: school of thought that that's a way to go to
- 1:36:29Speaker 5: build a team versus being top heavy, more like to
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: go back to Seattle like JSN was, Like what of
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: their passing offense was Jackson Smith and jigbut and everybody else? Like,
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: there are different ways to do it, I suppose.
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: Also, just to the emailer's point, I don't know how
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: much inside outside versutilia those other guys really have, Like
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: I mean Kyle Williams, I were still figuring him out. Well,
- 1:36:51Speaker 4: Booties mostly an outside guy.
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't I don't know the more
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: you can do, right, But I would just argue too,
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: like I think it's great if you have some versus
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: to your game. So in other words, if maybe you
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: have like let's just say Mac Collins was exclusively an
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: outside guy with his size. I know he's got versatility too,
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: but let's just say, Okay, so I really like Booty,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: but Hollins is my outside guy. I wish I had
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: some place. Well, he can play inside too, so I
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: can use him, so the versatility to be able to
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: do both as good. But when you're actually on the
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: fields and you're playing, you're lined up in a spot.
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: So like your versatility isn't like confusing the defense in
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: other words, like you're figuring out right, Like you're figuring
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: out as a defense, how I'm going to defend whatever
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: they have. You know, like Evan said, like they have
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: five wide. Well I'm not just going to say, well,
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: this guy's only an outside guy so I can get
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: away with you know, wait a minute, he's in the slot. Now,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: Like what do I do? Like, No, You're you're gonna
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: cover him with one of your defensive backs, right. So
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: I don't think it's as much of an advantage to
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: have versatility while the play's going on. It is an
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: advantage like in training camp as you're trying to develop
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: a roster.
- 1:37:59Speaker 6: I think there's matchup.
- 1:38:00Speaker 5: Matchups is the big thing with versatility is like, so
- 1:38:04Speaker 5: if you have a guy that can play a little
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: bit in the slot as like a bigger slot receiver, well,
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: now if you can get him matched up on sorry
- 1:38:10Speaker 5: to pick on his Jones.
- 1:38:11Speaker 6: Marcus Jones R.
- 1:38:12Speaker 5: Like that that's a mismatch that the offense can create.
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: Where I guess is where some of the body types
- 1:38:18Speaker 5: and the mismatches come into play with versatility when you
- 1:38:21Speaker 5: think of that sort of thing, or maybe you're a
- 1:38:23Speaker 5: guy that wins inside with quickness or digs with craftiness
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: and headiness. Like there's different ways to do it, but
- 1:38:29Speaker 5: I think that that's ideally. Coordinators probably like that element
- 1:38:34Speaker 5: of versatility of like, this guy's an outside guy, but
- 1:38:38Speaker 5: twenty percent of the time we're going to line up
- 1:38:40Speaker 5: in the slot because we're going to get a matchup
- 1:38:41Speaker 5: that we like this week, you know, against a particular
- 1:38:44Speaker 5: defense where they don't have bigger corners that are playing inside.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: Good stuff. People emailing in about youth sports, Zach and Ohio,
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: I think you guys are nailing it. The monetization of
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: youth sports has led to a lack of participation in burnout.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: I know the chase to the pros always been there,
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: but especially within NIL, seems that families are looking at
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: youth sports and their children as meal tickets. I do
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: think there's a bit of truth to Fred's video game take,
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: although I don't think it's laziness. Is it possible that
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: some kids just don't want to get inside of that
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: rat race after seeing.
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: What comes with it the burnout. We didn't mention, but
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: that's a good inclusion in that email. I think the
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: burnout is very real for a lot of yeah, a
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: lot oft of kids. That happened to me.
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: I mean, I got burned out in like I think
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: seventh grade and I was playing for the Worcester Crusaders.
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: So we were driving forty minutes to Worcester to practice
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: and I just got sick of it and I pulled back.
- 1:39:35Speaker 4: And then I got to high school a year later
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: and I realized, no, I really do want this, and
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: then I started going to camps and I reinvested in it.
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: But yeah, it's I mean, and it's easy to see
- 1:39:44Speaker 4: how it happens with the amount of practices and yeah,
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: the schedules some of these families have during the weekends.
- 1:39:49Speaker 5: And it's like teams, like my cousin was a gymnast
- 1:39:52Speaker 5: for a long time, six seven days a week. Yeah,
- 1:39:55Speaker 5: they like year round and it just never stop.
- 1:40:00Speaker 12: And by high school they yeah, must be really flexible,
- 1:40:02Speaker 12: thought Scott, what is wrong with that gymnastics built Scott, Irvine, Kentucky.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: Uh, soccer doesn't stick like football and basketball because pro
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: exposure on TV isn't there to keep their interest, so
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: better athletes gravitate to the US populist sports. In the
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: case of my kids, they were better at watching dandelions
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: grow while on the field and left sports due to
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: a lack of interest in ability.
- 1:40:30Speaker 6: But I think that's a chicken or the egg thing, right.
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: Soccer used to be on TV. They just recently decided
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: to do the apple thing. That's only like two years old, right,
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: three years old? Well, yeah, apple thing. But they used
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: to have like national games on all the time. But
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: I think no one cares. That's why they got zero
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: point two ratings.
- 1:40:46Speaker 5: It's a chicken or the egg thing though, right, Like
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: if if we were better at soccer and the domestic
- 1:40:51Speaker 5: league was better, then more people would watch it. But
- 1:40:53Speaker 5: because we're not better at soccer and the domestic league
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: isn't better, we don't watch it.
- 1:40:57Speaker 6: So like I and the.
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: People who really are the soccer fans, they know what
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: good soccer is, you know, Like that's why the Premier
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: League is on NBC Peacock on Saturday mornings in season,
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: but no.
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: One, no one in America knows. Those are hardcore soccer
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: people and they're generally Europeans.
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: Well, I know what good soccer is.
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: Well, you are, in all seriousness, you are a rarity.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: I'm not not, But in terms of soccer, do you
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: think most people?
- 1:41:25Speaker 4: No, I couldn't watch an MLS game and then be like, oh,
- 1:41:27Speaker 4: this is nothing compared to what I see. I could.
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: I can't.
- 1:41:29Speaker 5: Oh no, yes you could really if you if you
- 1:41:32Speaker 5: watch it, If you watch an MLS game, then you
- 1:41:34Speaker 5: watch like a Champions.
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: League game of triangles, and given goes to tell it's
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: a beautiful game. It's so complicated. You'd understand it if you,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: if you, if you actually lived.
- 1:41:44Speaker 6: You would totally get it.
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: I just you don't think there's any answer. I mean,
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: I feel like we've been asking this thing for like
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: twenty years.
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: There's a reason.
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: Why these guys make You know, you think that the
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: NFL players make a lot of money.
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: Some of these soccer players in Europe.
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: Oh absolutely, that's how they always die. I am not
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: scoffing worldwide the popularity of soccer.
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: But it's not like there's going to be no other
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: sports American soccer player is going to come and all
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: of a sudden change this whole dynamic just because one
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: person was so good.
- 1:42:13Speaker 6: I mean, no, it wouldn't need to be more than
- 1:42:16Speaker 6: one person.
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: Like you know, it's Mary Wrights in attendance sores for
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: Rhode Island FC at Patucket Stadium in twenty twenty five.
- 1:42:24Speaker 6: I did hear about that they're pretty popular there, but
- 1:42:26Speaker 6: they don't have it.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: What exactly does that entail?
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: I don't know, full stadium.
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: Yeah, like what is that?
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: I want.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: Skyrocket?
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: But but like to that battle is huge, the Sounders
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: are huge. I mean there's a lot of places outside
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: of New England in MLS that they bang it out.
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: They bang it out.
- 1:42:43Speaker 4: I mean I would just say to that point, is
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: it family friendly? Is it affordable? Because that's like you're
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: talking about all professional sports. Now nobody's going you know,
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: like it's not Red Sox.
- 1:42:52Speaker 6: Game one other major sports teams to be globbing on.
- 1:42:56Speaker 6: Making my argument that one that one I agree with you.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: They used to bang out the Protucket Red Sox too,
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: something I wouldn't wait twenty study.
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: You think of this theory, Rick and Riverside, Rhode Island.
- 1:43:06Speaker 2: If soccer was invented in the US, it would be
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: more popular.
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: I don't think soccer would have been Hockey is invented
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: in Canada.
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: We know better.
- 1:43:14Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, hockey was in Canada, right, hockey?
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: So like, yeah, but hockey isn't the most populous sport.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: No, but United.
- 1:43:25Speaker 5: States, No, but we it's very weird, very but Americans
- 1:43:31Speaker 5: are still very good at it. Like, yeah, clearly we
- 1:43:34Speaker 5: have three hundred and fifty million people. It's violent, yeah,
- 1:43:36Speaker 5: but I'm just saying it had the same dedication to
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: soccer that we had to hockey, we would also be
- 1:43:42Speaker 5: very good at soccer.
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: Right, we just don't.
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: Checking and like maybe five or six goals scored per game,
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: I think you know we're then we're on the right path.
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: But but again, to me, it's not even about the scoring.
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: It's about the chance to score. Like I've seen many
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: hockey games that are two to one, that you know,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: but the shots on goal at the end of the
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: game are thirty five, thirty three, not one to nothing.
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: Guy uh in La check out the Friendly Master tomorrow
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: or Louisiana.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: Agree a lot with the comments on youth sports burnout,
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: et cetera. But I also think a big part is
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: the time commitment for parents. A lot of parents are
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: working longer hours, and more often than not, both parents
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: work now too growing up, both my parents got off
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: work at five so they could be fully engaged with
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: my sports growing up. Now my wife and I get
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: off work around seven. But if the kids practice start
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: at five three days a week, makes it really difficult
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: to engage at the level my parents did for me.
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I hear that too.
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: I hear that too, So I do agree. I don't
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: think the two parent working thing is anything new, so
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: I think that's less of a thing. But the time commitment,
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: and I do I see this a lot. You know.
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: My brother and I were crazy and our kids played
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: everything and we loved it. We were all over the place.
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: My sister, who is into sports, she's not, like, not
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: into sports at all her kids. You know, they liked it,
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: and they weren't always as encouraged to do it because
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: it was a little bit more of a hassle and
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: they didn't do as much. You know. My my nephew
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: in particular, was a pretty good baseball player, and we
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: were like, you know, you you gotta have them playing
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: in the summer, kind of like they really weren't interested
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: in that.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: You know, when I kids growing up, I pretended hockey
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: didn't exist because I didn't want them playing.
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: At five in the morning.
- 1:45:28Speaker 6: My parents did the same thing.
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think part of mine. When I
- 1:45:31Speaker 4: was living in California my kids were young, it was
- 1:45:33Speaker 4: really hard to manage hockey because there are only so
- 1:45:35Speaker 4: many rings and the worst schedule there was like till
- 1:45:38Speaker 4: seven o'clock. But now when I go out with my
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: buddies who all had their kids in hockey forever, I'm
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: like so glad like and I still like I'm involved
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: a little bit enough. But it's I mean, everything we've
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: been talking about. It's expensive, it's time consuming, and you
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: want to be in it for the right reasons, like
- 1:45:54Speaker 4: I play.
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: Those pets stink now they do, they do.
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: But I mean I I got a great sports I
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: didn't like. I just one of my kids to play sports,
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: to learn how to be on a team and learn
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: how to lose, Like those to me were the biggest priorities.
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: I don't really care if they play sports at a
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: high level, but those two things I think are what
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: sports treats you the most.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: Team I like the I can see.
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: The book Preparing to Lose by Mike so well, it's
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: not one of like the life lessons.
- 1:46:17Speaker 4: I mean, look, everybody can win a game and feel great,
- 1:46:19Speaker 4: but you need to understand that, like you can work
- 1:46:22Speaker 4: your ass off and still lose, like and that's like
- 1:46:25Speaker 4: a tough lesson in life that everybody needs to lose.
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: And I think sports delivers that message better than a
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: lot of things.
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: You didn't lose, you just didn't win, right.
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: Justin writes in and real winners.
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: In recent years, polls are finding more and more kids
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: want to grow up to be YouTubers or influencers for
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: a career instead of doctors, lawyers or pro athletes. That
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: could very well be playing a big factor in the
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: drop off with participation. A lot of these kids would
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: rather try to make a big sitting in the comfort
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: of their room rather than making the physical and mental
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: push into sports.
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: I hear that. I just I don't know that this
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: generation is I.
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: Look at it other way.
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: I think the YouTubers, it's it's a real thing. But
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: I think it's given something kids who can't play sports
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: something to do.
- 1:47:12Speaker 4: Creative out, creative out the money in nil it's not
- 1:47:15Speaker 4: about being a professional athlete anymore. Now you can get
- 1:47:17Speaker 4: paid to be a college athlete, you know.
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:47:23Speaker 6: I think it's easy, always easy to say, oh, it's
- 1:47:26Speaker 6: this generation is just lazy.
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: You know, well I was Fred, that wasn't. I'm not.
- 1:47:32Speaker 5: It's just like ever your generation does that, right, even
- 1:47:35Speaker 5: I'm starting to do it now as well as I age.
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: And I also you know, I I understand the demands
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: on parents too, but you got to take part in
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: your kids life and you got to tell them get outside,
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: go play.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: But you can also go so a lot of this too,
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: you know. As much as I criticize and joke around
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: like Fred, well this generation blah blah blah when we
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: were growing up, When Fred and I were growing up, Mike,
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: you too, like there's nothing else to do. We just
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: but it was like nine o'clock in the morning on
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: a Saturday. You know, Mom, I'm going out. I'll see
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: you at five, I'll see you at six. And no
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: one thought a thing of it. You just went out
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: and played. And how many times have you heard someone say, oh,
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: I drove by the park today, there wasn't a single
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: kid in it. Because nowadays you're really like taking a
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: risk just letting your kids go out and do anything
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: that they want at a certain age. Now, do I
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: think that there's a little bit too much coddling. Yes,
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: I do, but for good reason. There are all kinds
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: of concerns that we never had to worry about. Mike,
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: You and I.
- 1:48:37Speaker 5: Even like trick or treating, like let kids go anymore,
- 1:48:41Speaker 5: like you have to like they do it like on
- 1:48:43Speaker 5: a trunks and stuff with like only people that you know, so.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: But whatever, whatever they don't want. Whatever the season was,
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: we were playing pick up whatever that's whatever it was.
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: So we'd be down i ever Stadium street Hotey, we
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: would create can we would even free he's the Everett Stadium.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: We had one of our friends. His father was like
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: the head of the stadium commission. You come up with
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: a fire hose and free. So we would actually play
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: ice hockey at Everittt Stadium. We'd play baseball and football,
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: basketball like whatever.
- 1:49:12Speaker 3: He did the Winter Classic before the Winter Class.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: It was. It was same ice but instead of playing
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: for like the Aztec soccer program. You know, like you're
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: playing every single day. You can't help but get get better.
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: And then in my neighborhood, I was one of the
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: younger guys, so that helped me a lot because I
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: was playing against my brother and his friends and he said,
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: you can play in any game that we have a
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: play in. Yep, but you got to keep up. Like
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: if you can't make a play, then you can't play.
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: So how can you not get better?
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: I have such same memories of the older kids bringing
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: me can't do that now. I couldn't believe it when
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: my son was playing baseball for a couple of years
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: and it's like, do you guys don't know how to
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: catch a fly ball? Like does no one know the rules?
- 1:49:56Speaker 4: Like nope, we all learned it in the backyard like lily,
- 1:49:58Speaker 4: you know. But it wasn't just sports too. Was gonna
- 1:50:00Speaker 4: say like it was flashlight tag at night. It was
- 1:50:02Speaker 4: kicked the can you know we used to wo man Hunt.
- 1:50:04Speaker 4: We had all these games that we would play the neighborhood.
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: Did you just stand like what's up in the back
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: of a building and just tennis ball into.
- 1:50:12Speaker 3: The whatever you're always doing the last time.
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: You start a kid do that?
- 1:50:16Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: Actually, SyES tennis, so I bet she's good.
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:50:23Speaker 5: But now like they're all these like they're all the
- 1:50:26Speaker 5: whatever sport they specialized in. They're just like robots at
- 1:50:28Speaker 5: that particular sport. And like I feel like that that
- 1:50:32Speaker 5: SAPs a lot.
- 1:50:32Speaker 3: I had to be dragged in the house, dragged.
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: In the house, legendary beat.
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: My mother got this bell that she would I was
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: ready to get in, Like it was embarrassing.
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: You couldn't keep me from playing all day long.
- 1:50:51Speaker 4: This is a different day every out the woods too,
- 1:50:53Speaker 4: Like I love the woods, Like yeah, ticks or any
- 1:50:56Speaker 4: that's like like ticks.
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: I was in the wood all the time, never.
- 1:51:01Speaker 4: Saw a tick. Now it's like you walk through your backyard,
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: you brush a leaf, and you're like, I got a tick.
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: When I grew up, we ate the ticks.
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: I just don't think we checked for him.
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: I probably had, I know, I know, I think it's
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: a spider. It it's really hard. The hell is that
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: it's just a I didn't spend a lot of time
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: in the woods.
- 1:51:17Speaker 3: I grew up in.
- 1:51:20Speaker 5: My dad like installed like a light on our driveway
- 1:51:24Speaker 5: because I used to won't want to play basketball, Like
- 1:51:26Speaker 5: when twenty four to seven and hestalled like a light
- 1:51:29Speaker 5: and we would used to play basketball till like eight
- 1:51:31Speaker 5: nine o'clock at night, And like I just don't even
- 1:51:33Speaker 5: does that register, Like would you ever? Like he like
- 1:51:36Speaker 5: lit up the whole driveway for us, so we could
- 1:51:38Speaker 5: stay out, you know, in the summertime and stuff, and
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: literally like it would be like eight o'clock at night
- 1:51:43Speaker 5: and we would still be out there.
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: But like you know, there's a million houses now, they'll
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: have the basketball hoop in front of the house on
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: the street and you might see the kid shooting by himself.
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: Matter of fact, my next to a neighbor who's a
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: senior in high school. Now she's out there still shooting
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: all the time. But you never see like six kids
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: playing three on three. Yeah ever never. You know, I
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: had a basketball hoop in front of my house the
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: whole time my kids were growing up. I had when
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: they were out there all the time, but they never
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: played three on three together.
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: I owe my beating in all sports sports to having
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: a hoop in my backyard that I shot at constantly.
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: I mean, you also played bullyball, which was great to
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: watch constant.
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: You know. So like we were always doing something and that's.
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: And we we would want nothing else. Yeah, Like I
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: don't know, well it's like that we don't have I
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: guess we didn't have video games. Pong was invented when
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: I was probably in eighth grade.
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: I don't it just seems such such an intense divide
- 1:52:43Speaker 4: because we had like I had casual cyo basketball, I
- 1:52:46Speaker 4: had casual youth hockey. Then I had neighborhood sports or
- 1:52:49Speaker 4: you know, I pick up pond hockey, and now it
- 1:52:52Speaker 4: seems like you don't really have that anymore. And it's
- 1:52:53Speaker 4: always kind of like a job and you're playing on
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: a team that you need to be at and you
- 1:52:57Speaker 4: have to be there, and you know, there's practice.
- 1:52:59Speaker 3: So many takes the joy.
- 1:53:00Speaker 4: It's not just this like loose bunch of sports that
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: you're playing that all have generally the same level intensity,
- 1:53:06Speaker 4: but you're just having fun the whole time. I never
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: thought about cyo basketball that way. You know, it was just, hey,
- 1:53:11Speaker 4: another chance to be my friends and play some sports.
- 1:53:13Speaker 5: I know, but like playing video games even like because
- 1:53:16Speaker 5: we obviously played video games all the time, but like
- 1:53:18Speaker 5: we played them together, you know, like we would be
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: at somebody's house.
- 1:53:22Speaker 3: I'm not saying it's anti social, but it can be.
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: But there is a difference. I think it makes much distinction.
- 1:53:28Speaker 5: You know, like we would play like like we'd have
- 1:53:30Speaker 5: like tournaments at somebody's house, where like we would just
- 1:53:34Speaker 5: play like whether FIFA, NHL or whatever, and like you know,
- 1:53:37Speaker 5: you would you play around Robin or something, and like
- 1:53:40Speaker 5: everybody would play and like you just but you played
- 1:53:43Speaker 5: as a group to get in one person's house, not
- 1:53:46Speaker 5: with the headset on, like into a camera that you're streaming,
- 1:53:50Speaker 5: and like that's like, ant.
- 1:53:51Speaker 4: Did that COVID year? Did that have any impact on
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: this at all?
- 1:53:54Speaker 5: Too?
- 1:53:54Speaker 4: I mean it seems like it's certainly set some kids
- 1:53:56Speaker 4: back a little bit.
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: But you know, but that whole thing that's worked, Mike.
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: You know, my kid used to be downstairs and you have
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: the headset on it. You know, he'd be talking to
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: his friends, you know, but my wife be like, what's
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: what's kind of doing it?
- 1:54:07Speaker 3: He's on he's talking to some guy in a white
- 1:54:09Speaker 3: van who set up later or something like that.
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, all right, I gotta go. I got a meeting.
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: We're gonna have to wrap it up. But quickly he's
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: been holding on forever. Patty from Agawam, What do you got?
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: What's up?
- 1:54:24Speaker 13: Guys?
- 1:54:25Speaker 8: Fred?
- 1:54:25Speaker 13: I like your idea of a resurgence and youth football,
- 1:54:28Speaker 13: tackle football, real football. And this might be a better
- 1:54:31Speaker 13: question for another day because he'd run in out of time,
- 1:54:34Speaker 13: But I think there needs to be a resurgence and
- 1:54:36Speaker 13: offensive line play and technique and how it's taught at
- 1:54:38Speaker 13: the high school and college level to get these guys
- 1:54:40Speaker 13: ready to play in the pros, and more specifically at
- 1:54:44Speaker 13: the tackle position, because it seems like there's just you know,
- 1:54:49Speaker 13: there's more an abundance at the inside offensive line positions.
- 1:54:53Speaker 13: And what do they do?
- 1:54:55Speaker 3: Like, Yeah, it's hard because size.
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: You can't teach size, and a lot of these guys
- 1:55:00Speaker 2: you know, don't put on the weight and they go
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: play basketball.
- 1:55:03Speaker 5: I mean, how many six, six, three and twenty five
- 1:55:07Speaker 5: pound dudes with thirty four inch arms are there on
- 1:55:09Speaker 5: this planet?
- 1:55:09Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:55:10Speaker 5: And so then that that already went like this, then
- 1:55:12Speaker 5: how many people can actually coach it and teach the technique?
- 1:55:16Speaker 5: Property Now we just went like that. So like now
- 1:55:18Speaker 5: we're trying to really and and.
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: You know, we say, well, tackle has the the playing
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: tackle has gone down?
- 1:55:26Speaker 3: It really hasn't. It's just that the elevation of the offense.
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: It's harder to be a tackle.
- 1:55:31Speaker 2: Now because you've got these athletes coming off the edge
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: and you know, you're throwing the ball so much more
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: than when I was watching football and as.
- 1:55:39Speaker 3: A kid didn't throw the ball as much.
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: So I do think tackle wasn't the blocking our significantly
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: better than they.
- 1:55:47Speaker 6: All over the defensive front, inside and outside.
- 1:55:50Speaker 2: But tackle is more It's never been more important than
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: it is now. It wasn't important thirty years ago.
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: I think with Will Campbell last year that somehow my
