Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Go One Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast
- 0:13Speaker 1: and sometimes a podcast, but wherever the good drama takes us.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I'm Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I love that. Thank you. I'm Wendy.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'm a former Hallmark hater. On today's episode, we are
- 0:27Speaker 1: discussing the PBS masterpiece series The Count of monte Cristo,
- 0:31Speaker 1: episode two, which originally aired on PBS on Sunday, March
- 0:36Speaker 1: twenty ninth. It's currently available to stream on PBS dot org,
- 0:39Speaker 1: or if you would like to binge the entire season,
- 0:42Speaker 1: you can do so on the PBS passport.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I have I wonder if there's people here are like,
- 0:48Speaker 2: how did I get here? What it says Hallmark? But
- 0:51Speaker 2: why are they doing PBS? I think I think it
- 0:55Speaker 2: serves our audience to explain, like a little bit, who
- 0:58Speaker 2: we are, sure what we're doing here? Okay, so we
- 1:01Speaker 2: are Megan and Wendy. I'm Wendy. We are Girls Gone Hamewark.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We review Hallmark movies on the regular, but PBS is
- 1:11Speaker 2: putting out really good content and a lot of our
- 1:14Speaker 2: listeners had suggested we review The Count of Monte Cristo
- 1:18Speaker 2: as well as another brand new series called The Foresights.
- 1:22Speaker 2: So Here we are, So Here we are. Wendy, I
- 1:26Speaker 2: think might be brand new to PBS. I'm totally brand new,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and I cannot believe how incredible their entertainment is.
- 1:38Speaker 1: For what it kind of does follow when we started
- 1:41Speaker 1: Girls Gone Hallmark. As our intro suggests, I am a
- 1:45Speaker 1: longtime Hallmark fan. I had been watching Hallmark movies for years.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Wendy had never seen one prior to our first review.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I'm not a.
- 1:52Speaker 1: PBS completionist, but I love Downton Abbey with my whole heart,
- 1:56Speaker 1: so I knew that PBS had going on. So I'm
- 2:01Speaker 1: so excited that we're doing this.
- 2:03Speaker 2: And I want to put a flee out to our
- 2:05Speaker 2: regular Hallmark listeners, Like if our regular Hallmark listeners are
- 2:09Speaker 2: here and they are like not interested in the PBS
- 2:12Speaker 2: because they're just here for us, thank you. I want
- 2:15Speaker 2: to suggest that this series, as well as The Foresights,
- 2:20Speaker 2: is kind of in the lane of Hallmark, just a
- 2:24Speaker 2: tiny bit elevated, don't you agree? Yes, kind of what
- 2:27Speaker 2: Hallmark wishes it could be. Maybe I agree with that. Yes,
- 2:32Speaker 2: The Count of Monte Cristo is excellent. It is excellent.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I was not sure that I was going to like this,
- 2:39Speaker 2: and we've had a lot of well, I was really
- 2:42Speaker 2: worried about you, but I was not sure that I
- 2:44Speaker 2: was going to like this. We've had a lot of classic.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Novel adaptations in the wind, you know, Weathering Heights just
- 2:50Speaker 1: came out, and I was like, I'm not interested in that,
- 2:53Speaker 1: and I.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Just was nervous.
- 2:55Speaker 1: This is excellent. It's fantastic. So if you haven't yet
- 2:59Speaker 1: started watching it, can't recommend it enough.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yeah, agree?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Why don't we dive into episode two with a synopsis?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Sure? It is called The Castle. As Hope fades in
- 3:12Speaker 2: prison Edmund meets Abby Ferreira, who reveals the secret of
- 3:18Speaker 2: a legendary treasure.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Joining the cast this episode is Jeremy Irons, who appears
- 3:24Speaker 1: as Abby Faria. Jeremy is an Academy Award winning actor
- 3:28Speaker 1: for his role in the nineteen ninety one film Reversal
- 3:31Speaker 1: of Fortune. His other work includes the voice of Scar
- 3:35Speaker 1: in The Lion King. He played Alfred in Batman Versus Superman,
- 3:38Speaker 1: Down of Justice, and most recently has appeared on the
- 3:41Speaker 1: Apple TV Plus series The Morning Show. To round out
- 3:45Speaker 1: his one hundred and sixteen acting.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Credits, I like how you subtly pronounced his last name
- 3:52Speaker 2: correctly where I did not. It was not intentional, I
- 3:57Speaker 2: just no, it came off my lips. I was like, yeah,
- 4:00Speaker 2: I said that wrong. I definitely said that wrong. But
- 4:03Speaker 2: all right.
- 4:03Speaker 1: All of our other cast and crew returns. All eight
- 4:06Speaker 1: episodes are written and directed by the same team here,
- 4:10Speaker 1: So Billy August directed, Greg Latter and Sandra Ptarlia wrote
- 4:16Speaker 1: all eight episodes.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I think I love that. Actually I do too. I
- 4:20Speaker 2: do too because on Hallmark, on this series we'll get
- 4:23Speaker 2: like batches like one and two directed by this person,
- 4:26Speaker 2: three four directed by this person. I kind of like
- 4:29Speaker 2: that we have like the same exact team for sure.
- 4:33Speaker 2: You two, well, why don't we take a quick break
- 4:42Speaker 2: and we'll come right back with our first.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Impressions of this episode. Hey, Wendy, what is your first
- 4:47Speaker 1: impression of the Count de Monte Cristo Episode two?
- 4:52Speaker 2: This episode said you will sit in this misery and
- 4:55Speaker 2: you will feel every single year of it. Oh much
- 5:00Speaker 2: like you.
- 5:00Speaker 1: My first impression is this episode was a claustrophobia nightmare
- 5:04Speaker 1: from start to excruciating finish.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Can you imagine climbing? Look before we're gonna get into it.
- 5:11Speaker 2: But before, when they're like made that tunnel between their
- 5:14Speaker 2: two cells, I was like, oh, it's probably like big
- 5:18Speaker 2: enough to crawl through. I didn't know it was like
- 5:21Speaker 2: a coffin, and then it collapses around him. Look, I
- 5:24Speaker 2: don't think I fully relaxed since watching this episode. Oh
- 5:29Speaker 2: and they did it so well to the way they
- 5:32Speaker 2: shot it, with like the grit of the stone falling
- 5:37Speaker 2: on them and yeah, yeah, so good. Let's talk what
- 5:41Speaker 2: we liked. Okay, go ahead, you start.
- 5:44Speaker 1: We talked in the first episode about how stunningly beautiful
- 5:47Speaker 1: it is, and there are some stunning visuals. I'll talk
- 5:49Speaker 1: about some of the beautiful ones, but there are some
- 5:51Speaker 1: visuals in this episode that are stunning in the level
- 5:54Speaker 1: to which they are disturbing.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Tell me more.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Particularly early in the episode, is forced to eat rotten
- 6:02Speaker 1: the maggeed and the maggots, and later they show the
- 6:07Speaker 1: food and vomit crusted in his beard. Yeah, and that
- 6:13Speaker 1: was a choice that sends a very strong message.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You know. When I watched this a few days ago,
- 6:21Speaker 2: I texted you and I was like, oh, Sam Klachlin
- 6:24Speaker 2: is hot, and You're like, yeah, even with that scraggly
- 6:26Speaker 2: beard and I was like with the vomit in it,
- 6:29Speaker 2: I mean not so much, not so much. My first
- 6:35Speaker 2: like is this is almost like an episode. It's like
- 6:38Speaker 2: a slow burn, Like it feels like nothing's happening because
- 6:42Speaker 2: we are We're spanning like ten years, yeah, in the cell,
- 6:49Speaker 2: and these guys are just like scratching away at the
- 6:54Speaker 2: stone to dig their way out to escape. I mean
- 6:59Speaker 2: it made me really feel it, like the monotony and
- 7:03Speaker 2: their desperation and even at times like their hopefulness that
- 7:10Speaker 2: they are going to make it. Yes, it was. It
- 7:15Speaker 2: was so good. So when the actual escape happens, it
- 7:23Speaker 2: just felt like, oh my god, We've got through this
- 7:26Speaker 2: like decade of suffering and now they have this possibility. Yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 2: it's so good. It's earned.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I mean, he's been there for fifteen years. It was
- 7:34Speaker 1: ten years before he even met Abby Faria, who had
- 7:37Speaker 1: been digging for.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Seven I mean, I mean, I think I think it's
- 7:41Speaker 2: easy to watch the show and be like, oh, it's slow,
- 7:44Speaker 2: but I think I don't feel that way, Like it
- 7:47Speaker 2: definitely is not a fast paced show. And I think
- 7:49Speaker 2: that really contrasts with our discussion tomorrow of the Foresights,
- 7:52Speaker 2: which we'll get into but we need to sit in that, like,
- 7:56Speaker 2: we need to have that moment of escape feel earned,
- 8:00Speaker 2: and we can't just fast forward. As much as there
- 8:03Speaker 2: is certainly a time jump here, they do a nice
- 8:07Speaker 2: job of making you feel and showing you that frustration,
- 8:13Speaker 2: that length of time, all of that. And I think
- 8:15Speaker 2: your point about the hopefulness this episode is such a
- 8:18Speaker 2: roller coaster because that hopefulness lands so well for me
- 8:22Speaker 2: because of the stuff that precedes it that is so frustrating.
- 8:27Speaker 2: By that, I mean, the inspector visits Edmund and he
- 8:31Speaker 2: pleads his case, and then the Sector's like, this man's mad,
- 8:35Speaker 2: and you're like, no, just listen to him.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And then Villefort lies to Morel about Edmond. He's like, oh,
- 8:41Speaker 1: he took his life, you know, he's reading that blank
- 8:43Speaker 1: piece of paper. And then that has a trickle down
- 8:47Speaker 1: effect if Morel passes that information onto Mercedes and Louis
- 8:50Speaker 1: and then they declare him dead and all of these
- 8:53Speaker 1: things happen, and then we see Edmund. He's decided he's
- 8:58Speaker 1: going to starve himself because he's feeling hopeless, and we
- 9:03Speaker 1: get that disturbing scene that we discussed, and so we
- 9:08Speaker 1: are just so beaten down that when Abby comes through
- 9:12Speaker 1: that wall, You're like, oh my gosh, he has a friend,
- 9:15Speaker 1: like at the very least he's not in this alone.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And then everything that follows. I was like, I love
- 9:23Speaker 1: this relationship that they're having in a dungeon.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, right, they work together and they make a plan.
- 9:32Speaker 2: And then when we see Abby teaching Edmund everything, Yeah,
- 9:37Speaker 2: let's talk about Jeremy Irons as Abby. He's so good.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And when Abby comes in, he's not just like a
- 9:47Speaker 2: plot device, Like he breathes oxygen into Edmund, like gives
- 9:54Speaker 2: him life again. And you know, he ends up being
- 9:58Speaker 2: like a mentor and a moral compass because you start
- 10:01Speaker 2: to see the beginnings of Edmund's you know, he's feeling
- 10:07Speaker 2: very revengeful, right, he's angry, And I love that Abby,
- 10:14Speaker 2: who is he's a priest, right, he's like basically trying
- 10:20Speaker 2: to like be the moral compass for him. Like, no,
- 10:23Speaker 2: this isn't that's not the way to go. Am I
- 10:26Speaker 2: wrong about that? No? Not at all? Okay.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I was like wait well, and he's like also, it's
- 10:30Speaker 1: like the greatest crime you could commit is taking your
- 10:33Speaker 1: own life basically like no, yeah, you have to live, right,
- 10:38Speaker 1: And he gives him something to live for. Yeah, I
- 10:41Speaker 1: just thought it was so great. It was so good.
- 10:45Speaker 1: These two together were so good. It just helped move
- 10:48Speaker 1: the story along. What if, like Edmund was just in
- 10:51Speaker 1: there by himself doing that, Like that would be boring.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So I just love that we get this other character. Yeah,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and then that scene where he drags him back through
- 11:03Speaker 1: the wall, right, like Abby passes, he has a stroke,
- 11:07Speaker 1: he passes. Several days later, the guards.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Come find him dead and he drags him and I'm like,
- 11:13Speaker 2: what is he gonna do? What is he gonna do?
- 11:14Speaker 2: Like I would like? I was like, is he gonna
- 11:16Speaker 2: take him with him? He's like, We're finally gonna get
- 11:18Speaker 2: out here together.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And then he uses him one last time, and I
- 11:24Speaker 1: have to think like Abby would be okay with that choice,
- 11:26Speaker 1: like they had worked so hard. He would want Edmund
- 11:29Speaker 1: to escape by any means necessary.
- 11:31Speaker 2: At this point, right right, I was feeling in this moment.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I was like they did the tension so well in
- 11:37Speaker 2: this scene because I was like, what is Edmund going
- 11:40Speaker 2: to do? Because I thought if they take Abby's dead
- 11:43Speaker 2: body out of there, They're gonna put another prisoner in there.
- 11:47Speaker 2: So it's not like Edmund can like tunnel his way
- 11:50Speaker 2: back through there and be like, Yo, excuse me, I
- 11:52Speaker 2: have to pass through here so I can get through
- 11:54Speaker 2: this other side of the tunnel. I was like, what
- 11:57Speaker 2: is going to happen? So I didn't see it come
- 12:00Speaker 2: that he was going to switch the bodies like. I
- 12:02Speaker 2: was like, Oh, that's brilliant, but also so risky because
- 12:08Speaker 2: I didn't know. I was like, how are they going
- 12:10Speaker 2: to dispose of the body. Are they going to put it?
- 12:11Speaker 2: Are they going to cremate it? Are they going to
- 12:13Speaker 2: I didn't know they rowed out to sea. I had
- 12:16Speaker 2: no idea. I did not know what was going to happen.
- 12:18Speaker 2: I just was like, Oh, you have to get through
- 12:20Speaker 2: to in the tunnel or you're gonna get caught. I
- 12:24Speaker 2: don't know. It was so tense. I think he heard
- 12:27Speaker 2: them saying that they were going to, you know, we'll
- 12:30Speaker 2: come back after dinner and we'll bury him at sea.
- 12:33Speaker 2: And that's when he made the decision that this was
- 12:35Speaker 2: his one and only chance. Then to think like, you
- 12:38Speaker 2: were tunneling for all those years and then you get
- 12:40Speaker 2: out this way, right, it was all for nothing. At
- 12:44Speaker 2: least it gave him something to do, I guess for sure, oh,
- 12:49Speaker 2: but that scene where they you know, he they Edmond
- 12:53Speaker 2: switches the body, he goes in the body bag. They
- 12:56Speaker 2: put those like shackles, the weights on him. They're not
- 13:02Speaker 2: on him. I guess they're on the bag technically, right,
- 13:05Speaker 2: But okay.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I talked about stunning visuals, the way that is shot
- 13:09Speaker 1: when they throw him in the water, that looks like
- 13:11Speaker 1: a nature documentary. When they see him like struggling to
- 13:15Speaker 1: get out, I'm like, there's gonna be a baby dolphin
- 13:17Speaker 1: born right off screen.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Because but I was.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Like, again, the claustrophobia is real because you start to
- 13:25Speaker 1: breathe really shallowly because you're worried that he's not going
- 13:27Speaker 1: to get ou in time, even though there's six episodes
- 13:29Speaker 1: to go, so you know he's got to.
- 13:31Speaker 2: But that was I just thought, done so well, so
- 13:36Speaker 2: well yeah, and then he you know, gets up, swims
- 13:40Speaker 2: out from the from the sea. He ends up on
- 13:43Speaker 2: the shore and then they realize he's gone in there
- 13:47Speaker 2: like alarms are the cannons are going off? You know
- 13:50Speaker 2: that somebody has escaped. I thought, wow, And that's how
- 13:54Speaker 2: the episode ends, and it is so freaking good, so good.
- 13:59Speaker 2: I go back to another like that, I had I
- 14:03Speaker 2: found like the digging through the stones for years kind
- 14:08Speaker 2: of compelling, Like you would think it's boring, but like
- 14:13Speaker 2: you said, you know when they were like passing through
- 14:15Speaker 2: was very dangerous, and then one of them gets like
- 14:18Speaker 2: stuck in there and he has to pull him out
- 14:21Speaker 2: by his feet, and like for a fifty minute episode
- 14:26Speaker 2: where not a ton happens, but a ton happens, it's
- 14:30Speaker 2: so well done. It was so well done, and I
- 14:35Speaker 2: thought this he may have mentioned this earlier, but like
- 14:38Speaker 2: the highs and lows in this episode, it's done in
- 14:42Speaker 2: such perfection that had me wrecked. I was like, he,
- 14:50Speaker 2: what is gonna for someone who does not know the story?
- 14:54Speaker 2: I mean, of course, like you said, there's six more
- 14:57Speaker 2: episodes left and it is called The Count of Monte
- 14:59Speaker 2: crist so Edmund is the main character. But like I
- 15:02Speaker 2: didn't know what was gonna happen, Like it had me
- 15:04Speaker 2: on the edge of my.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Seat even knowing what's gonna happen, like I've read the synopsis.
- 15:08Speaker 1: He exacts revenge on people who had him falsely in prison,
- 15:11Speaker 1: Like I know what's coming, but I don't know how
- 15:13Speaker 1: we're gonna get there, And it am still compelled to
- 15:16Speaker 1: watch every minute.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Of the process. Same, are you done with your like, Saam,
- 15:20Speaker 2: do you have any wishes about this episode? I have
- 15:22Speaker 2: just one little wish. Yeah, I know. We get some glimpses,
- 15:28Speaker 2: glimpses of Marseille, Marseille, Marseille. Is that am I saying that? Right? Yes?
- 15:34Speaker 2: The French city, Yes, Marseille, Yes, coming out, and I'm
- 15:39Speaker 2: like it doesn't sound familiar anyway. Like, we get Mercedes
- 15:42Speaker 2: and Villefort and they're all being like shady compared to
- 15:47Speaker 2: like what we're witnessing inside the prison dungeon. It feels
- 15:53Speaker 2: to me like, is Mercedes really that heartbroken? Okay? For Edmund?
- 15:58Speaker 2: This is my biggest wish about this episode. We don't
- 16:03Speaker 2: spend enough time with Mercedes, and perhaps that's intentional. We
- 16:08Speaker 2: see her dressed in black right in theory she's in mourning.
- 16:13Speaker 2: We see, you know, when she discovers that Louis has passed,
- 16:17Speaker 2: and she's like all arranged for the headstone, and of
- 16:18Speaker 2: course there's the headstone for both Louis and Edmund, all
- 16:22Speaker 2: of this right, But then we see her address as
- 16:26Speaker 2: the countess and am I an idiot? I was like,
- 16:29Speaker 2: what's she the countess of?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Who'd she marry, because I don't think they make that
- 16:33Speaker 1: clear until the next episode.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Interesting, Yes, I agree with you.
- 16:37Speaker 1: So I was like, wait a minute, are we supposed
- 16:39Speaker 1: to assume who she's with or are we just supposed
- 16:42Speaker 1: to know that she has moved on? And I think
- 16:45Speaker 1: we'll talk about this more in the next episode. But
- 16:47Speaker 1: I was like, I have so many questions. And then
- 16:50Speaker 1: she's like sitting.
- 16:51Speaker 2: For a portrait. I think at one point, is that
- 16:53Speaker 2: what she's doing?
- 16:53Speaker 1: I don't know, right, But I was like, what's going
- 16:55Speaker 1: on with Mercedes? Like, what was the process here? She
- 16:59Speaker 1: married her cousin? I know, what is all that we
- 17:02Speaker 1: need to know that she's moved on? Is that like
- 17:05Speaker 1: the stunning when they call her account? Is we know, okay,
- 17:08Speaker 1: she's married to somebody. She's clearly moved on.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess. And she is not just this netmaker
- 17:16Speaker 2: or net repair woman or whatever it was she was
- 17:18Speaker 2: doing in that little cliff side shack anymore. She's clearly
- 17:22Speaker 2: moved up in life, right, So I was like, well,
- 17:25Speaker 2: I don't understand. Give me a little bit more. Well.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I even think like Edmund's father dying should have been
- 17:32Speaker 2: kind of a bigger scene too, because you know the
- 17:36Speaker 2: man died of grief. Basically he's operating under the assumption
- 17:41Speaker 2: that his own child has taken his life. So I
- 17:45Speaker 2: just think that could have been those things could have
- 17:48Speaker 2: been given a little more weight. Yeah, And that's so
- 17:52Speaker 2: frustrating too, because his father doesn't know the truth. And
- 17:56Speaker 2: to know that he has died without ever learning the
- 17:58Speaker 2: truth that Edmund didn't do anything wrong and all of
- 18:00Speaker 2: these bad actors were at play behind the scenes is
- 18:04Speaker 2: so frustrating. There's so much about this that is so frustrating.
- 18:09Speaker 2: A great is that all you have for wishes? It
- 18:12Speaker 2: really is. Okay, I have some discussion questions. Okay, how
- 18:16Speaker 2: long are you lasting in the chateau dialf Wait, I
- 18:20Speaker 2: don't know what that is? The prison? Oh god, that's
- 18:24Speaker 2: a great question.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Here's the thing. I probably will just like lay down
- 18:32Speaker 1: and wait for the rats to take me. I am
- 18:36Speaker 1: not the person who is going to tunnel out. I
- 18:38Speaker 1: just don't have it in me. I'm not that strong.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I also probably don't have the strength to take my
- 18:44Speaker 1: own life. I think I would just give in and
- 18:48Speaker 1: wither away. What about you, I you know, I don't know.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I don't know, but I've thought about I've thought about
- 18:55Speaker 2: this in terms of you and I, because here's some backstory.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Guys like would Meg didn't I take like a break,
- 19:02Speaker 2: a mini vacation. We always come back and we're like, yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 2: we're ready to go, right, What if we go to prison?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Do we are? We are we planning like all these
- 19:12Speaker 2: great things we're gonna do when we get out. Okay,
- 19:16Speaker 2: but wasn't he sent for life?
- 19:18Speaker 1: Like did he have a prison sentence? My point, like,
- 19:21Speaker 1: he didn't have an idea of like life after this imprisonment?
- 19:26Speaker 2: Did he? He did not? But I mean he came
- 19:29Speaker 2: out ready to go.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I hear what you're saying. When we take a break
- 19:33Speaker 1: work on the plane home, we're like, I wish I
- 19:35Speaker 1: had my computer. I want to Like, I'm on vacation
- 19:37Speaker 1: with my family and all I want to do is
- 19:39Speaker 1: get to work. So yes, do I feel compelled and
- 19:42Speaker 1: motivated by the fact that I'm like, well, I got
- 19:44Speaker 1: nothing but time?
- 19:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I did a girl boss in here exactly.
- 19:49Speaker 1: The problem is with me that I'm so desperately afraid
- 19:53Speaker 1: of getting in trouble that I don't think I would
- 19:55Speaker 1: be able to handle the stress of attempting to break out.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I would probably be.
- 20:00Speaker 1: The person who's like, well, is there a prison job
- 20:02Speaker 1: I can get?
- 20:03Speaker 2: Can I?
- 20:03Speaker 1: Like, you know, in modern day prisons? This prison, I'll
- 20:07Speaker 1: roll over and die in a modern day prison. I'm like,
- 20:09Speaker 1: could I take a correspondence course?
- 20:11Speaker 2: Please? Like? Is there something I could do productively with
- 20:14Speaker 2: my time? Here? Can I work in the prison yard
- 20:18Speaker 2: in the garden? Please? Can I start teaching an art class?
- 20:22Speaker 2: What can I do podcasting for prisoners? This prison? You're
- 20:27Speaker 2: doing nothing? No? Nothing? Can you imagine he's got one
- 20:32Speaker 2: tiny little window? Like that's awful? Awful? You know, I
- 20:37Speaker 2: always have I have had these thoughts. I'm like, would
- 20:39Speaker 2: I get in really good shape if I was in prison,
- 20:42Speaker 2: like there's nothing else to do? Would I be like, mom,
- 20:46Speaker 2: might as well do a setup? I mean maybe I
- 20:48Speaker 2: was just like of rock Hard Abs, because you're like,
- 20:50Speaker 2: just get up and do some squats.
- 20:52Speaker 1: What Okay, that's ninety seconds of my day now, what
- 20:56Speaker 1: I know?
- 20:56Speaker 2: Because like, you know, at home in twenty twenty six,
- 20:59Speaker 2: you're like, man, I laundered to do, or I got
- 21:00Speaker 2: Aaron Sorana. Can't do those setups right now? But there
- 21:04Speaker 2: nothing but time. Okay, here's some other questions for you.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Do you think Edmund would have survived without Abby? No,
- 21:13Speaker 2: so you believe that their relationship was the turning point
- 21:16Speaker 2: of the story one thousand percent. Yeah. I agree, And
- 21:20Speaker 2: knowing what we know, not only did Abby give him
- 21:24Speaker 2: hope that there was a way to escape even if
- 21:27Speaker 2: they had I almost feel like, even if.
- 21:29Speaker 1: They hadn't gotten out, that hopefulness of having a plan
- 21:32Speaker 1: and working towards that, I think is what saved him.
- 21:35Speaker 1: But the idea that Abby has this hidden treasure, that
- 21:39Speaker 1: they're like, there's something outside of these walls for them,
- 21:42Speaker 1: there's a something waiting for them. I just think all
- 21:46Speaker 1: of that hope is what saves him.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we didn't even talk about that. That is, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 2: Abby's sharing that there's this hidden treasure, and it encourages
- 21:55Speaker 2: Edmund to go look for it. And then and then
- 21:58Speaker 2: I was like, you know how you have those like
- 22:00Speaker 2: moments where you're like, if I won the lottery, what
- 22:02Speaker 2: would I do with it? Yeah? Do you think that
- 22:04Speaker 2: Abby and Edmund are thinking like that? They're like, what
- 22:07Speaker 2: are we gonna do with all this wealth once we
- 22:09Speaker 2: get to it? Oh?
- 22:10Speaker 1: Yeah, what are their plans? I don't know, Well, where
- 22:13Speaker 1: are their plans?
- 22:13Speaker 2: Because they didn't really talk about it, right, I don't
- 22:16Speaker 2: think so. Yeah, you know, Edmund talks about revenge a lot,
- 22:20Speaker 2: but I wonder if they hadn't even thought that far.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I wonder if it's just that's a path to a
- 22:26Speaker 2: life at least there's something out there for me exactly.
- 22:29Speaker 2: But maybe Edmund was thinking or quickly thinking at the
- 22:32Speaker 2: end when he runs back in there to get the map,
- 22:35Speaker 2: He's like, Oh, this is going to be if I
- 22:38Speaker 2: find that treasure, that's what's going to be. The means
- 22:41Speaker 2: that it's going to get me to enact my revenge.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and perhaps this would be the really interesting thing
- 22:48Speaker 1: about reading the book, which I plan to do after
- 22:50Speaker 1: we watch this, is you would get in theory, you
- 22:54Speaker 1: would get more of Edmund's internal dialogue that you don't
- 22:57Speaker 1: get in the show.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah. Am I gonna have to read the book? It's
- 23:02Speaker 2: on audio. Am I gonna have to listen to the book?
- 23:06Speaker 2: I think I will. Okay, one last question, who do
- 23:09Speaker 2: you want to see? Because I'm gonna assume that Edmond
- 23:12Speaker 2: follows through with his revenge, who do you want to
- 23:15Speaker 2: see most to get what's coming to them?
- 23:19Speaker 1: Look, Doanglars is my least favorite person, like, he's just
- 23:22Speaker 1: he radiates evil for no reason other than he's jealous.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Fernanda is jealous too, He's Fernande's childish to me. In
- 23:30Speaker 1: my mind, there's something about him that I just am like, oh,
- 23:33Speaker 1: you're just a baby. But for some reason, I'm like,
- 23:37Speaker 1: I don't know why I feel this way about like
- 23:38Speaker 1: Doglars knows better, and I just I want to see
- 23:41Speaker 1: him wipe that smug smile off of his face.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I agree with that, but also Villefort has no oh yeah,
- 23:48Speaker 2: reason to pin this on an innocent man that's very true,
- 23:52Speaker 2: other than self preservation exactly. So that to me also
- 23:58Speaker 2: feels like just yes, yes, yes, I don't know. Yes.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Well, we will be back next week with our thoughts
- 24:06Speaker 1: on episode three, Life after the Escape.
