Latest / IMI Podcasts / When CBI Becomes a Trap: My St Kitts Story
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: In recent years, the global market for citizenship by investment has expanded significantly, offering individuals and families the chance to obtain a second citizenship in exchange for economic contributions.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: While this model has produced many success stories, it has also revealed troubling patterns in certain jurisdictions, none more concerning than the situation unfolding in St.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Kitts and Nevis.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: In 2021, I, a Russian investor, applied for citizenship in St.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Kitts and Nevis prior to its ban on Russian applicants.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I passed all KYC checks, submitted full documentation, and made the required investment.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: The government would later decide to retroactively halt and reject all applications submitted by Russian citizens, leaving me and many others in the same situation as mine in processing purgatory.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Yet, years later, I have received neither citizenship nor a refund.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: The Citizenship by Investment Unit, or the CIU, has provided no meaningful communication, delayed any form of decision, and ignored repeated inquiries.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: This story is far from unique.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: A quick search online reveals numerous similar cases.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Forums, social media posts, YouTube videos, and media coverage document dozens, perhaps hundreds, of applicants who followed all procedures only to be left in limbo.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: This is no longer about administrative delays.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: It points to a deeper issue.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Institutional mismanagement or intentional obstruction.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: The CIU appears to withhold refunds long after application rejections, even when I have provided all necessary documentation.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: The CIU's tactics often rely on delay and deflection.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Rather than uphold the expectations they set, they change rules retroactively, reject valid applications, and create an environment where recourse is nearly impossible.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Even when the CIU denies an application, its handling of the investment refund, often substantial, does not carry any urgency or professionalism that one might expect.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: In a previous article, Maxim Jarkov, another CBI investor, outlined how the CIU invalidated legitimate applications without due process.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: I also detailed how the CIU has failed to uphold its responsibilities, despite having everything required to issue a refund in my previous article.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: A group of applicants in the same boat have launched an online petition to shed light on what Jharkov labels the illegal and unfair treatment by the government.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: These accounts suggest a clear pattern of behavior that undermines investor confidence and casts doubt on the integrity of the CIU's operations.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: The core issue is trust or lack thereof.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: CBI investors are not simply purchasing travel privileges, they are investing in the credibility of a government.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: When the government breaks that trust, the cost is immeasurable.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Damaged trust affects future applicants, international relationships, and a country's reputation on the world stage.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: And the most alarming aspect?
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Even applicants who comply fully can find themselves stuck in years of silence and inaction with no accountability or options.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: The lessons are clear for any individual or family considering CBI programs, especially in St.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Kitts and Nevis.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Conduct deep due diligence, engage with former applicants, demand clear terms and guarantees, and be cautious of marketing that downplays real risks.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Governments that fail to honor their commitments risk damaging their credibility and the future viability of their CBI programs.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: For potential applicants, my warning is urgent as it is clear.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Look beyond the promises and assess the patterns.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: In too many cases, what begins as a path to opportunity ends as a costly and disheartening ordeal.
