- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, and I was caught off guard, Tad, I was not ready for you to hit record there, but that's alright. From across the interwebs, I've got Tad and Phil.
- 0:23Tyler Johnson: How's it going, guys?
- 0:24Phil: Going alright, catch your wife.
- 0:25Tad Eggleston: That's good.
- 0:26Tad Eggleston: It's good.
- 0:28Tyler Johnson: So, I am operating without headphones today, so my,
- 0:33Phil: They're not working.
- 0:34Tyler Johnson: So my family is, in and out of the room every once in a while, so now they can hear us when we're talking. It's not just me talking to thin air.
- 0:45Phil: Alright, so now… so now instead of you not saying anything scandalous, it's gotta be us not saying anything scandalous.
- 0:50Tyler Johnson: It's funny. You guys are very quiet on my speakers, so, like, you can't hear outside of my little elk cove here.
- 0:56Phil: Alright, you say that, and then… and then someone's gonna say something completely ridiculous and off-topic, and… and completely derail everything right as someone's walking into the room.
- 1:05Tyler Johnson: Just waiting for…
- 1:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I mean… It is always possible.
- 1:11Tyler Johnson: There's never anything off-topic in our house.
- 1:14Phil: That's fair. I… I was told, I was told this podcast, would… would be done with… without an audience, so now… now I have stage fright, as, as,
- 1:23Tad Eggleston: therapy.
- 1:24Phil: off, off air, that, there is.
- 1:26Tyler Johnson: I don't know about audience, they are…
- 1:28Tad Eggleston: 22 panels is recorded in front of a live studio audience.
- 1:34Tyler Johnson: I don't know about studio.
- 1:35Phil: Right? Your home is now a studio. We're gonna have a lot of interns in and out of there, you know, some lights. There's just gonna be a box of donuts that you never see come or go, but there's always a varying amount in there. It's gonna get pretty weird.
- 1:49Tyler Johnson: Ugh. Well… I would go to a more private room, but…
- 1:54Tyler Johnson: We don't have central air, so I.
- 1:57Phil: Afternoon.
- 1:57Tyler Johnson: Turn on an air conditioner, which then, because our rooms upstairs are so… Humid and… and… hot.
- 2:05Tyler Johnson: So… Would hate it.
- 2:06Phil: Yeah.
- 2:07Phil: Put you through all that.
- 2:09Tyler Johnson: Yeah, well, I would be sweating, and that's no fun.
- 2:13Phil: Not before church, that's only during church.
- 2:17Tyler Johnson: I'll be sweating anyway, because I don't want to be there.
- 2:20Phil: Right.
- 2:24Phil: Oh, so what's, what's the news in the comics world this week?
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: Well, the thing that caught my eye, and it doesn't look like there's a lot of data on it yet,
- 2:35Tad Eggleston: The Dark Horse Workers Union, released a statement
- 2:40Tad Eggleston: Alleging the company has been targeting senior editors to give them supervisory manager status?
- 2:48Tad Eggleston: To… to… Essentially make them ineligible for the union.
- 2:55Tad Eggleston: Reducing the membership and changing negotiating weight, that sort of thing.
- 3:02Phil: Oh, wow.
- 3:02Tad Eggleston: That is one.
- 3:03Phil: Sneaky.
- 3:06Tad Eggleston: Saying that, that they're, they're, they're giving them…
- 3:09Tad Eggleston: Some new supervisor responsibilities and acting like they'd been that way the whole time?
- 3:15Tad Eggleston: Whereas previously, they weren't… weren't exactly supervisory as much as editors.
- 3:20Tad Eggleston: So… It'll be interesting to see how that works out.
- 3:26Tad Eggleston: The… the… union was… was formed and recognized in between…
- 3:35Tad Eggleston: Mike Richardson stepping away, and Jay Thomas taking over.
- 3:40Tad Eggleston: And the promotion to the other people to the… as the new heads of the company, so…
- 3:46Tad Eggleston: You know, it's already a period of transition for…
- 3:51Tad Eggleston: Dark Horse into having a little bit…
- 3:55Tad Eggleston: more hands-on from… from their corporate owners. I mean, they… they were… they were bought
- 4:02Tad Eggleston: maybe even as much as a decade ago, I don't remember. But, like, as long… as long as Richardson was the CEO, they didn't really change much.
- 4:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah. So… Something to keep an eye on.
- 4:15Phil: Now it sounds like they're going through a lot of groan pains.
- 4:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 4:19Tad Eggleston: In cooler news, Eric Gladstone and Marika Coresta are putting together a graphic novel at Sumerian Comics called Janis Joplin Pearl, so we're getting a Janis Joplin biopic. And I'm all for…
- 4:34Tad Eggleston: The amount of music we've been getting in comics lately, so… I'm here for it.
- 4:43Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been?
- 4:45Tad Eggleston: Did you guys see the late night drop Friday?
- 4:51Tad Eggleston: No? So, so you know how the… the…
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: The Justice Department indicted the 60-year-old former Olympian I think 57-year-old.
- 5:05Tad Eggleston: 67-year-old former Olympian canoer for vandalizing the reflecting pool, and… and shouted up and down about how he'd…
- 5:16Tad Eggleston: Ginny Pirro, like, he got into the water and violently tore the lining of the pool up.
- 5:26Phil: No, I somehow missed that one.
- 5:28Tad Eggleston: I did miss it, yeah.
- 5:29Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 5:30Tad Eggleston: And the head of the Department of Interior, what, Doug Burgum, yeah, wanted to make it clear that the reflecting pool is part of the National Monu… er, part of the Lincoln Memorial, so, like.
- 5:44Tad Eggleston: This is just like if he took paint and splashed it all over blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah, until they had to put up or shut up, at which point they went, oh, no,
- 5:57Tad Eggleston: it was an installed property, he didn't do anything, and dismissed the charges on Friday night, and hoped nobody would notice.
- 6:08Tad Eggleston: Let's just hope.
- 6:10Tad Eggleston: Of course, you know, Fearless Leader immediately got pissed off that they missed the charges, bringing attention to it all, at least…
- 6:22Tad Eggleston: The independent side of media,
- 6:27Tad Eggleston: I hate that we've actually reached a point where I don't like mainstream media either.
- 6:34Phil: Yeah, it's pretty, it's pretty bleak out there.
- 6:36Tad Eggleston: You know, like, I'm really kind of fed up with the right saying things are bad for so long that they become bad.
- 6:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 6:48Phil: Making… making them worse themselves?
- 6:53Tad Eggleston: But that's what they're best at. Like, when they start saying they're bad, they're… they're not… they're not bad. Like, when they started, like.
- 7:04Tad Eggleston: bashing CNN, New York Times, and the Washington Post into the ground, they were still, like, legit…
- 7:14Tad Eggleston: If sometimes slightly flawed in trying to be balanced news organizations.
- 7:20Tad Eggleston: And now, it's like…
- 7:27Tad Eggleston: they bend over… I mean, did you see any of the Correspondence Dinner stuff?
- 7:34Phil: Ugh, I heard about some of it.
- 7:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, for that matter, even this story, like, the way it was being reported in the mainstream news was…
- 7:45Tad Eggleston: Like… Trump angry at Pirro because he claims that Vandalism DID happen.
- 7:59Tad Eggleston: In spite of… available evidence.
- 8:04Phil: Wow.
- 8:05Tad Eggleston: Only that, like, in spite of available evidence is, like, deep in the story. Like, the headline is, Trump mad at Pirro, he claims vandalism did happen, or whatever, you know, it's like…
- 8:23Tad Eggleston: You can't…
- 8:25Tad Eggleston: When you can't even say, like, what they say out loud, because you're like, oh, the things you say out loud make you look bad, so we need to make you look better.
- 8:37Tad Eggleston: So that you don't get mad at us.
- 8:42Phil: That doesn't seem like it should be what the meeting's doing, and yet, and yet, here we are.
- 8:48Tad Eggleston: So yeah, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's kind of… Didn't the,
- 8:58Tyler Johnson: Did it get… did something get graphed over, too? Like, they put new sod on?
- 9:03Tyler Johnson: I saw a Trump post.
- 9:06Tyler Johnson: We're… Well, it doesn't matter anymore, but…
- 9:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I, I… I can't even… No, the, the other, the other…
- 9:17Tad Eggleston: Did you guys see the Fauci hearings?
- 9:21Tyler Johnson: No.
- 9:21Phil: heard about them, but I.
- 9:22Tyler Johnson: Third about it.
- 9:23Phil: I saw at least one diary entry that was, was pretty ridiculous.
- 9:28Tad Eggleston: Okay, well, yeah, but here's the thing, is it?
- 9:32Phil: I… I guess…
- 9:33Tad Eggleston: Making it out of context the way that they want you to, but like… Wow.
- 9:39Phil: The one diary entry I saw was about how Trump was more focused on getting re-elected than actually addressing the pandemic, so…
- 9:46Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 9:46Phil: Yeah, so it wasn't… it wasn't…
- 9:49Tad Eggleston: It wasn't ridiculous for Fauci.
- 9:51Phil: Right, right, right. But it was, it was ridiculous for the situation.
- 9:54Tad Eggleston: Lots of people have been focusing on things like, oh my god, I got to talk to Barbra Streisand tonight.
- 10:01Phil: She was…
- 10:02Tad Eggleston: Wonderful. And then I accidentally butt-dialed her later in the night.
- 10:07Phil: No, no, it was actually relevant, it was actually a relevant guy.
- 10:11Tad Eggleston: Or, or…
- 10:11Phil: about what, what they.
- 10:12Tad Eggleston: Or it's not hyperbole to say that
- 10:16Tad Eggleston: I may be the most famous and recognizable person in the country right now, and everybody's like, oh, you big-headed, you wanted to be the big head. It's like, no, this is a diary. This is somebody processing the fact that they're living a life that they never intended to live, and probably don't want to live, but kind of have to, because circumstances
- 10:38Tad Eggleston: Dictate that they do.
- 10:40Phil: Yeah, I think it's sad that he's becoming target for a right-wing witch hunt.
- 10:47Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, what I will, just, like, I… I'm… I don't want to spend too much… we're on a clock, so I don't want to spend too much time here, but what I will toss out really, really quickly is, is that,
- 10:59Tad Eggleston: like, first, you know, in heading into it, like, Rand Paul had put together the AI thing to make him look like a teenage girl on a blanket writing in his diary.
- 11:13Tad Eggleston: Which is why he, like, made a statement at the beginning about how this was clearly only orchestrated to try to get him
- 11:21Tad Eggleston: to say something that they thought that they could, aha! We caught you and can prosecute you, blah blah blah, and therefore, on the advice of counsel.
- 11:35Tad Eggleston: I am… Choosing not to answer.
- 11:41Tad Eggleston: as is my right under the Fifth Amendment, which became his statement to every question. There's one point where Josh Hawley is, what color is your tie? And he's like.
- 11:51Tad Eggleston: On the advice of counsel.
- 11:54Phil: There we go.
- 11:54Tad Eggleston: I declined to answer.
- 11:56Tyler Johnson: Well, they got, they got some minutes.
- 11:58Tad Eggleston: That's my right, under the Fifth Amendment. Yeah.
- 12:01Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 12:02Tyler Johnson: I mean… How many…
- 12:04Tad Eggleston: Then you've got…
- 12:05Tyler Johnson: Trump do that, you know?
- 12:06Tad Eggleston: Then you've got… then you've got Bernie fucking Moreno.
- 12:11Tad Eggleston: Who, like, is sitting there going.
- 12:14Tad Eggleston: It was about 6 years ago that I decided to give up my company.
- 12:21Tad Eggleston: Run for office, to finally be here to say, who the fuck do you think you are?
- 12:28Tyler Johnson: Oh my.
- 12:29Tad Eggleston: Really? That's your question? As a senator? And really, that's why you got into politics? And by the way, why haven't you said anything about your ex-son-in-law who's credibly accused of abusing your daughter and two-year-old granddaughter and still running for re-election?
- 12:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 12:55Tad Eggleston: Jim Jordan got caught on CNN on that one.
- 12:58Tad Eggleston: completely backed the guy up, and then, like, well, like, let me just play this tape from you talking about Graham Plattner.
- 13:08Tad Eggleston: And, like, even as he was leaving, he's like… and the Democrats made him stop running, not us, and it's like, dude, that's the point.
- 13:21Tad Eggleston: So, welcome to the world we live in. Anyway, new to order, initial orders due on August 27th.
- 13:31Tad Eggleston: Take it away, Tyler.
- 13:33Tyler Johnson: Right off the bat, I'm gonna talk about Batman Bad Seeds Sunrise, number one, from Matt Fraction and G. Willow Wilson and Yusefi Kamankuli, and Cliff Rathburn. Vandal Savage puts Ivy in his crosshairs. Somewhere in the headquarters of the New York City Police Department, Vandal Savage hides a chemical weapon.
- 13:53Tad Eggleston: The Gotham City.
- 13:55Tyler Johnson: What did I say?
- 13:56Phil: New York.
- 13:57Tad Eggleston: New York.
- 13:57Tyler Johnson: Really?
- 13:58Phil: Yeah.
- 13:59Tyler Johnson: Wow. Headquarters of the Gotham City Police Department.
- 14:03Tad Eggleston: Ben?
- 14:04Tyler Johnson: Kendall Savage hides a chemical weapon designed to kill Poison Ivy, but if Ivy dies, there will be no ending the bad night of bad seeds for government… for Gotham City, or anywhere else.
- 14:17Tad Eggleston: Pyramid City.
- 14:19Tyler Johnson: What?
- 14:20Tad Eggleston: Forgot.
- 14:20Tyler Johnson: Say that again?

- 14:22Tyler Johnson: Government City. A heavily armored private militia tasked with bringing down… bringing him down on orders of the worst person in Gotham.

- 18:16Phil: Your phone…
- 18:17Tyler Johnson: The book of Nosferatu by Michael Barici told our… First off, from a blaze.
- 18:25Tyler Johnson: Emil's wife is missing, but no one in his village will do anything about it. No one will even speak of it. It's like she never existed. But Emil knows the truth. Bella did not simply vanish, she was taken.
- 18:39Tyler Johnson: Pray to the region's terrifying blight, Nothratu. Unable to bring through the taboo surround… unable to break through the taboo surrounding the interference in these cursed matters, Emil turns away from society and into a world full of unknown and strange powers.
- 18:57Tyler Johnson: What terrible things lurk between the village in the deep, dark woods, and how can he harness them all to find his beloved bride? Can he harness them all, or will he too succumb to their curses?

- 19:19Tyler Johnson: Alright, Phil, you're now.
- 19:20Phil: diana from Nate Powell over at Abrams.
- 19:25Phil: The year is 1992. Diana Bouge is a personality too big for her small Arkansas town. A runaway who dyes her hair platinum, studies the occult, sings like an angel, and dominates the local punk scene through the force of her personality.
- 19:41Phil: Even when being in the cult of Diana is too much for them, her friends Jody, Steph, Napoleon, and Todd can't help but be pulled into her vortex. But under the surface, Diana struggles to outrun damage from her repressive religious past.
- 19:56Phil: She only shares these struggles with her dearest long-distance pen pal, who she keeps hidden from her other friends, until one day, he's never heard from again. Untethered and fiercely protective of what she considers hers, Diana turns even
- 20:10Phil: Even more inward, blending music and homegrown sorcery in hopes of outrunning reality.
- 20:16Phil: But even she can't turn back time. Or can she? It's gonna have a final order cutoff of August 31st, in stores October 7th.
- 20:27Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 20:29Tad Eggleston: The Lawrence Brothers Detective Agency.
- 20:33Tad Eggleston: Yes, those Lawrence brothers. Joey Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence, and Andrew Lawrence, along with the Berkowitz brothers and Dario Formisano and Sean von Gorman.
- 20:44Tad Eggleston: Sean von Gorman of Comics?
- 20:47Tyler Johnson: Lawrence, did you guys ever… was he in anything?
- 20:49Tad Eggleston: I don't know. At Z2, this is a project that has been 15 years in the making. The Lawrence brothers, Joey, Matt, and Andrew, have toyed around with their own take on the Hardy Boys by creating a detective agency with a Hollywood twist. The darkly funny graphic novel reimagines them as reluctant heroes battling a conspiracy that's warping the very fabric of fame. Set against the surreal backdrop of a corrupted Hollywood, the Lawrence
- 21:14Tad Eggleston: Lawrence Brothers Detective Agency is a satirical fever dream about identity, memory, and the absurdity of pop culture. And I just have to go, whoa!
- 21:26Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff of August 31st, and in stores on October 7th.
- 21:32Phil: Alright, next up, Noodle and Bao. Momo has lived in Town 99 her entire life. She knows all its quirks and rhythms, the best places to buy fruit, practice Tai Chi in the park, and most of all, get the best meal. Noodle and Bao, run by Momo's best friend, Bao, and their Ama, Noodle.
- 21:51Phil: But Town 99 is changing. Rent is becoming unaffordable for Mobo and her parents, and even Noodle and Bough has been edged out of its storefront, which was just recently bought out by the new business venture France Cafe. France is run by the ambitious Ms.
- 22:06Phil: jujibee and her henchmen, who claim they're only beautifying Town 99 with good business. Momo knows that's not true, and knows that if she doesn't do something, she'll lose everything she loves about her neighborhood. From undercover recon to a cook-off proposal, protest signs to petitions, Momo and Bao are on a mission to protect Town 99.
- 22:25Phil: Will they succeed before it's too late? This new graphic novel from Shayna Liu over at HarperCollins has a final order cutoff of September 7th, in stores October 7th.
- 22:39Tyler Johnson: Hey, this next… I gotta get back to it. I moved my screen, you guys, I'm sorry.
- 22:46Tad Eggleston: forever.
- 22:46Tyler Johnson: Pepper, but…
- 22:47Tad Eggleston: It's achiev.
- 22:47Tyler Johnson: an Astra, or out from Astra, a standalone sequel to the popular graphic memoir Penny, this vivid graphic novel centers on house cat heroine Penny's relationship with her sister Pepper, and the delicately
- 23:05Tyler Johnson: slipsistic inner world they share with each other. As she is prone to do, Penny the house cat spends her day lazing around the apartment and musing philosophy. However, her piece is rudely disturbed when she is forced to contend with the existence of her little sister, Pepper.
- 23:22Tyler Johnson: What follows is one part rye, immaculately watercolored cat gags, one part vision quest.
- 23:30Tyler Johnson: Here, acclaimed graphic novelist Carl Stevens blends the, quote.
- 23:34Tyler Johnson: Life of a house cat with an epically psychedelic Journey of Self-Discovery, and the profound art of making peace within yourself.
- 23:44Tyler Johnson: Final order cut off of September 21st, and will be in shops October 20th.
- 23:51Tad Eggleston: Wandering Cat's Cave from Akane Torakai. In Akane Torakai's Wandering Cat's Cage, it is the near future. Only a few women are still able to menstruate, and even fewer men will be born to them.
- 24:05Tad Eggleston: Reproduction is limited to medical intervention controlled from on high, and the structures and lives of the past hold no weight.
- 24:12Tad Eggleston: They are only hinted at through the remaining scraps of the world that no longer exists. Life can be good, though, if you fall in line, and the women of the city live bright, happy, tightly controlled lives. But complete obedience isn't for everyone. For the women across the river who live in a rundown shantytown, viewing the opulence of the city from afar each night, life is different. It's humble, and often dangerous, but it is free.
- 24:36Tad Eggleston: It is here that Sanada, a young acupuncturist, lives with the mysterious Rejo, the only male she's ever met, and who sells himself to the rich women who sneak across the river for something they've never experienced.
- 24:50Tad Eggleston: The two form a small family, taking in other young women ousted from the city. But a real, living, breathing male might be too precious to leave to the shabby streets. When Rejo is kidnapped at gunpoint and taken to the breeding program in the city, Sanada must join with the other outcasts to try and rescue him and learn the difficult truths of love, self-actualization, society, community, safety, and the future itself.
- 25:15Tad Eggleston: Master Mangaka Akane Torakai has produced a stunning work of a relational sci-fi.
- 25:22Tad Eggleston: Through a gender-bent looking glass, Torakai pulls no punches, examining the deeply messy subjects of our day. Sexuality, gender, dynamics, romantic love, familial trauma, freedom, and control through immaculately realized settings and character-rich emotive body language. Produced in partnership with Mangasplaining X,
- 25:42Tad Eggleston: Drop.
- 25:43Tad Eggleston: This is from Fanik Graphics, final order cutoff of…
- 25:46Tad Eggleston: September 14th, and in stores on October 28th.
- 25:51Tad Eggleston: How about some collections?
- 25:53Phil: Alright, first up there is Narco from Doug Wagner and Daniel Hilliard over at Image Comics. From the creative duo behind fan favorites Plastic, Plush, Vinyl, and I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer, comes an all-new absurdist horror you won't want to sleep on.
- 26:08Phil: Marcus, Westfall has a rare form of narcolepsy. When he gets excited, he blacks out.
- 26:14Phil: He's adapted, homebound, life, and a harmless infatuation with the girl next door. But when he witnesses her murder, and then immediately, annoyingly, passes out, he becomes suspect number one.
- 26:25Phil: With a final cutoff of August 31st, in stores October 7th. Read the book that, Tad's initial reaction to was Fuck You, Fuck You, Fuck You.
- 26:36Tyler Johnson: That's it?
- 26:37Phil: Yeah, yeah, to when you first read Narcos.
- 26:40Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 26:43Tyler Johnson: Because it was so good.
- 26:44Phil: It was.
- 26:45Tad Eggleston: Well, it was good, but also the… the ending of that… that first… Mmm.
- 26:52Tad Eggleston: It's so good.
- 26:53Phil: Yeah.
- 26:54Tad Eggleston: But… but… But he was also kind of mean to me.
- 26:59Tyler Johnson: Alright, the complete Rachel Rising from Terry Moore, out from Dark Horse.
- 27:04Tyler Johnson: a modern horror classic returns in a definitive, oversized hardcover. I ordered two of these today, by the way. Yeah. The complete Rachel Rising collects the entire haunting saga in one volume, debuting as part of the new Abstract Studio Dark Horse Comics imprint.
- 27:21Tyler Johnson: When Rachel climbs from a shadow grave with no memory of… shallow grave, excuse me… with no memory of her death, she sets off a chain of sinister revelations connecting a small town's past
- 27:33Tyler Johnson: to its violent present. Combining slow-burn horror, dark mystery, and Moore's trademark characterwork, Rachel Rising remains one of the most acclaimed horror comics
- 27:44Tyler Johnson: Of all time. Final order cutoff is September 14th, and this will be in shops December 15th.
- 27:56Tyler Johnson: You're great. Santos sisters, Tad.

- 28:05Tad Eggleston: And now, with an Eisner Award under their collective belt, in addition to being imbued with the powers of the goddess Madame Sosostris, they're even better prepared for whatever comes their way. Whether it be foiling disastrous plots to take down the local power grid, rescuing boyfriends from jealous supervillains, saving senior citizens from drug addiction, or battling the duos.
- 28:26Tad Eggleston: ever-expanding rogues gallery of supervillainery, Amber and Alana
- 28:31Tad Eggleston: Ambar and Alana, they, they, they made a typo in their, their solicit text here. They spelled it.
- 28:37Tyler Johnson: Amber?
- 28:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Always bring the comic…
- 28:41Tad Eggleston: book fun in this healthy conflation of four-collar nostalgia, action, and laughs. Volume 2 of the Santos Sisters brings back fan-favorite foils such as Bridget, Spinner.
- 28:51Tad Eggleston: Bridget spinner.
- 28:53Tad Eggleston: 8Ball, Alakran, and a mean and mad Monroe, while also introducing even more abhorrent antagonists, including the fishy blue Agua and her Manzanillo assassins, the punctual and punitive 10 o'clock, the mysteriously dead-eyed Sergeant Murder, and Agent
- 29:12Tad Eggleston: IX, or XI? XYX? Yeah, XYX. XI.
- 29:18Tad Eggleston: XIX? I think so. XIX! That's probably it.
- 29:23Tad Eggleston: And the rapacious…
- 29:25Tad Eggleston: avaricious Billy Bitcoin. Also, Jackie Stalegum, Phantom of the Cardboard, the numismatest, Gary Ansman, the Nature Ninjas, the Boozy Bs. Through it all, Amber and Alana strive to maintain a healthy work-life balance, while their creators, Greg and Fake, continue their mission to revive unabashed comic book fun with this ebulent and exuberant hit.

- 34:51Tyler Johnson: I am, just pulling…
- 34:54Tad Eggleston: Tyler, as our cartoonist, if you haven't bought this yet, you should.
- 34:59Tyler Johnson: It looks awesome. It looks amazing.
- 35:02Tad Eggleston: playing with one. It is… well, I mean, this is… I mean, like…
- 35:06Tad Eggleston: I often ask people what their tools are, and people who make comics digitally, which is most people at this point, this is what they use. Sometimes, they'll use
- 35:17Tad Eggleston: Other things for certain things?
- 35:20Tad Eggleston: But this is their primary program.
- 35:23Tad Eggleston: Clips.
- 35:24Tyler Johnson: Studio, yeah.
- 35:25Tad Eggleston: And, and it's, it's, you know…
- 35:29Tad Eggleston: It's only a one-year, one… one device item, so, you know, you'll probably wind up
- 35:37Tad Eggleston: looking to… or license for the main program, so, like, if you're a real artist, you'll be looking to buy a permanent license at some point, and or a multi-device, etc, but there are sales regularly. But it's also got so many brushes, so many…
- 35:53Tad Eggleston: Fonts…
- 35:54Phil: Thousands.
- 35:55Tyler Johnson: Let me go through what's in those 10 items.

- 36:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the add-on stuff is, like, $500 worth of add-ons.
- 36:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 36:47Tad Eggleston: That, that, yeah, again, you're gonna have to find a way to…
- 36:52Tad Eggleston: But as Spike Trotman has pointed out to me, like, follow Clip Studio on Blue Sky. They regularly have ridiculous deals on…
- 37:03Tad Eggleston: On their… their… Their perpetual license.
- 37:08Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 37:10Tad Eggleston: So…
- 37:11Tyler Johnson: So this, this, though, will get you one year, correctly.
- 37:14Tad Eggleston: Right. It'll get you one year for one device, but again, all of the brushes and stuff you keep no matter what.
- 37:20Tyler Johnson: it's just…
- 37:22Phil: Cool.
- 37:23Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it's…
- 37:23Tad Eggleston: The main program that you have to, to, to write.
- 37:27Tyler Johnson: Alright, next up is Blade Runner. We have… it's the Blade Runner collection from Titan Elcon. $18 gets you 17 items, goes to the Direct Relief, it's an emergency medical charity, and it's extended through August 13th.

- 38:12Tyler Johnson: All the Blade and Rose, it is a ton of stuff here.
- 38:15Tyler Johnson: That's gonna run through August 13th. The Humanoids Mega Bundle, is really cool, because you, for $20, you get 35 titles.
- 38:24Tyler Johnson: You get the Inkl, Technopriest, Mellerlante, Montjourgine, and more! Reading is fundamental is where this is going, and it's, till August 5th, so there's a few more days on that, as today is the 2nd, so get on that.

- 39:11Tyler Johnson: For August 13th. And last is the Disney Masters Collection and Originals from Fanagraphics. 48 items for $25, it couldn't be a better deal, for, going to first book.
- 39:25Tyler Johnson: And, August 19th is the cutoff for that one.
- 39:33Tyler Johnson: Dun, dun dun!
- 39:38Tyler Johnson: Tad 3 amazing new books.
- 39:40Tad Eggleston: Yes, well, I mean, he didn't… he didn't toss it to me.
- 39:44Tyler Johnson: Oh.
- 39:44Tad Eggleston: Pretty amazing new books.
- 39:46Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay, is that what you were waiting for? I thought you were…
- 39:48Tad Eggleston: A little bit. I was also looking at something.
- 39:50Tyler Johnson: Annie.
- 39:51Tad Eggleston: Is Ted okay? I'm Dave Chisholm at Massive Cave.
- 39:54Tyler Johnson: So good.
- 39:55Tad Eggleston: wrapped up, and it was so fucking good. Second book at Galactic from Kurt Pyre and Emma Carpena at Distillery came out, and, like.
- 40:08Tad Eggleston: This is… this is fun sci-fi romance.
- 40:11Tad Eggleston: sprinkled with… with… with nods to all of your favorite scenes in, like, all of the different…
- 40:20Tad Eggleston: sci-fi or adventure romance movies.
- 40:24Tyler Johnson: Well, and Kurt Pires is so good.
- 40:26Tad Eggleston: Right. It's just, it's just, it's just, yeah, it's, it's wonderful. And then I finally, read the first two issues of Concrete Stars Over Sand and Potter.
- 40:34Tyler Johnson: I box them as they're coming out, but number… number 2 is great.
- 40:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, Paul Chadwick continues to do really, really good work.
- 40:45Phil: I've been doing this for a while or something.
- 40:46Tyler Johnson: turning me on to concrete, otherwise I would have passed right over this when it came out this.
- 40:50Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 40:50Tyler Johnson: Couple weeks, but…
- 40:54Tad Eggleston: So, so yeah, that's… that's my 3 amazing books.
- 40:58Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 41:02Tad Eggleston: So, One Piece race, I… I was be called.
- 41:07Tyler Johnson: What?
- 41:08Tad Eggleston: Or no, Phil needs to take a walk, I'm sorry, Phil needs to take a walk.
- 41:11Phil: It's funny you joked to the One Piece race, because that's where the majority of my comic reading this week was.
- 41:16Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 41:16Phil: I absolutely plowed through, Goodnight Pun Pun Volume 2, which is, books 3 and 4. And, now, now I am left, sadly staring out the window, waiting, waiting for Volume 3 to arrive from,
- 41:30Phil: From Interlibrary alone, but thankfully, I will probably be reading Girl on the Shore next week, as, that one has finally come in. That's a good one. My Inio Asano kick continues,
- 41:41Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 41:42Phil: But yeah, but so, so that was a good… that was… I… I put down 46 chapters, it might have been 47, but yeah, yeah, for anyone out there who… who has not read Goodnight Pun Pun and enjoys weird, bizarre tales of childhood depression, this… this is, this is your sign.
- 42:00Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I don't want anyone.
- 42:01Tad Eggleston: Good night.
- 42:01Tyler Johnson: Always weird tales of childhood depression.
- 42:05Tad Eggleston: True.
- 42:06Phil: I adore Tales of Childhood Depression.
- 42:08Tad Eggleston: It's… it's so good, though.
- 42:10Phil: It is, it is.
- 42:12Phil: it's going in… I mean, I… I…
- 42:15Phil: Did not fully know what to expect in, turning out a really good way, because, yeah, this thing is… this thing is like a… is just a non-stop gut punch at this point.
- 42:27Tad Eggleston: So… Alright, now we'll go to the one-piece race.
- 42:33Tad Eggleston: Where… where I was… Becalmed.
- 42:38Tad Eggleston: Since you've taken your walk. Yeah.
- 42:41Phil: Sorry, we're all out of sorts today.
- 42:43Tad Eggleston: No, that's okay. I was, but calm, but when I talked to Meredith McLaren.
- 42:49Tad Eggleston: on Friday, and that episode will probably go up today. She recommended, and I still need to watch it, I will probably do it today, there is a One Piece fan letter short.
- 43:02Phil: Mmm.
- 43:02Tad Eggleston: on… on Netflix that's supposed to be, or that she just adores.
- 43:07Phil: Okay.
- 43:08Tad Eggleston: As well as a heroin short that, that, that, that digs in and out me. So, so those, those are on my list of things to watch today, One Piece related. One piece adjacent. Maybe I'll get…
- 43:21Phil: But the water's moving.
- 43:23Tad Eggleston: Ray, ray.
- 43:25Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 43:29Tyler Johnson: me on one piece, I have looked at the app. That's what I…
- 43:34Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 43:35Tyler Johnson: I have… I have looked at the app and gone, you know, I should get back to that.
- 43:38Tad Eggleston: Did you even… did you even look at it enough to…
- 43:42Tyler Johnson: Oh, no, I didn't open it.
- 43:44Tad Eggleston: Discover what chapter you were on.
- 43:46Tyler Johnson: I just looked at the icon.
- 43:47Phil: Oh, okay, okay. Oh, we're at that point. We're at that point.
- 43:51Tyler Johnson: No, no, no, I… guys, I'm not there. That's crazy.
- 43:55Phil: You know…
- 43:55Tyler Johnson: It's funny. That's… that's a different story.
- 43:58Tad Eggleston: Okay, okay, that's fair.
- 44:00Tad Eggleston: That's fair. That's… that's legit.
- 44:03Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 44:04Tad Eggleston: Alright. That's the chat.
- 44:06Tyler Johnson: That's really funny.
- 44:09Tyler Johnson: Great responsibilities this week. These humanoids has been awesome. I… I don't know about you guys, but I love these… these books.
- 44:17Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 44:18Tad Eggleston: Do you have?
- 44:19Phil: Yeah, this was,
- 44:20Tad Eggleston: That's, that's why I, like, particularly, and, and it's why I suggested we continue it, like, there, there, there seem to be holes…
- 44:32Tad Eggleston: In everybody's comic book knowledge.
- 44:36Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 44:37Tad Eggleston: there are very few people who just read across the world, there are very few people that read… I mean, I think we do a great service already by not disdaining superheroes, but still talking about, like, indie comics or genre comics or whatnot, but, like…
- 44:54Tad Eggleston: getting into Band-Aid to Snae, getting into manga, that sort of thing, I think is an opportunity to… and as we will next week, getting into Disney, which, like.
- 45:04Tad Eggleston: I think a lot of people
- 45:06Tad Eggleston: think of Disney comics the way you and I used to think of Archie comics, which is, okay, whatever, are those really comic books?
- 45:16Phil: I do, I do gotta be honest, that was kind of my, that was kind of my reaction when you suggested the Disney one, and I was like.
- 45:21Phil: Okay, and then I heard there was the carbox collection. I'm like, alright, I'm sure that'll be interesting, and then…
- 45:26Tad Eggleston: Right, no, no, I mean, I cannot emphasize enough that, like…
- 45:30Tyler Johnson: Give it a chance, man, yeah.
- 45:31Phil: Yeah, absolutely. I'm gonna be here.
- 45:33Tad Eggleston: And particularly, like, fanographics… It's vague.
- 45:38Phil: That should be the tip. That should be the tip-off way.
- 45:41Tyler Johnson: You're doing Disney? There you go.
- 45:43Phil: These are…
- 45:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no.
- 45:44Phil: the IDW tie-in, or the Boom Disney comics?
- 45:50Tad Eggleston: A lot of those are pretty good, too.
- 45:52Phil: But there's… but there's… there's still, like, 4 kids. This seems like a different level compared to…
- 45:57Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean…
- 45:57Phil: you'd expect.
- 46:00Tad Eggleston: It'll still be for kids, but like…
- 46:04Tad Eggleston: Kids the way, like, DuckTales is for kids.
- 46:07Tyler Johnson: DuckTales. I still watch DuckTales.
- 46:10Tad Eggleston: That's my point.
- 46:11Tyler Johnson: watching it. It's awesome.
- 46:12Tad Eggleston: Right, that's my point. Like, like, it's for kids the way Simpsons is for kids, or…
- 46:19Phil: Is… is the substance for kids?
- 46:22Tyler Johnson: It was.
- 46:24Tad Eggleston: I still think it is.
- 46:25Tad Eggleston: Y-you know, I think the biggest reason it's not for kids now is kind of like Mad Magazine.
- 46:34Tad Eggleston: When your parents liked it, and it wasn't as subversive. Yeah. Yeah. Or, or, you know… It takes away a little bit of the shine for the younger generation.
- 46:44Phil: If you have audience that has, like, stayed with you through, you know, all the years…
- 46:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, there's a great mad documentary, and they talk about that they add evidence and, like, strongly believe that one of the reasons that their sales numbers started going down was that, like.
- 47:05Tad Eggleston: The… the whole… Oh…
- 47:11Tad Eggleston: I get to read this, and my parents don't know what I'm reading, and oh my god, it's… it's… it's so outrageous.
- 47:19Tad Eggleston: became, oh my god, you're reading Mad Magazine? I love Mad Magazine!
- 47:24Phil: Yeah.
- 47:25Tad Eggleston: And that's not what any 10-year-old wants to hear for that thing that they think is edgy.
- 47:33Tyler Johnson: Which is weird, because here's the thing, like, us, we're going, you know what, I'm giving my kids permission to look at this thing that we had to feel was something to be hidden, and they're not taking advantage of it. They're just going, yeah, whatever, Dad.
- 47:48Tad Eggleston: Well, but again, part of the thrill…
- 47:51Tyler Johnson: Mad right here, I don't wanna…
- 47:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I love Mad Magazine.
- 47:55Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 47:56Tyler Johnson: Love it.
- 47:57Tad Eggleston: So, so, so, so, but right now, we're still in the, the, the, the humanoids, so, so, let, let's, let's… Phil, tell us some about Zombies that ate the World.
- 48:09Phil: So, first of all, I… I picked this entirely for the Guy Davis art, and was not disappointed. He was in… in full form for this. I do gotta say, though, it's… it's…
- 48:20Phil: it's interesting, it was not what I was expecting at all, and I should have expected something different from a humanoid zombie book, because I was like, oh, I'm sure this is just gonna be, like, a European Walking Dead or something, you know? And, it was actually, like, a dark satire. Okay. Yeah, it was… it was…
- 48:41Phil: Pretty funny, and it was like, okay, there's zombies in this world.
- 48:45Phil: But it hasn't really stopped society from functioning as normal, and also the zombies talk, so, you know, it…
- 48:54Phil: It was funny, because…
- 48:56Phil: Guy Davis is someone who… I mean, again, I should have known, because he did Fantastic Four Unstable Molecules, which was not your typical Fantastic Four book. Right. I was expecting, based off of his work on BPRD, some kind of, you know, action, zombie-punching.
- 49:13Phil: I think a minimum of zombies got punched. I think there was at least one head that got, clocked off, but yeah, there was a minimum of violence, and definitely more of a bizarre humor. I would be interested to see where volumes,
- 49:26Phil: 2 through 6 go with this one.
- 49:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah, well, I might have to kick them your way. I did get the Humble Bundle. Or, you've got a few more days if you want to spend your own,
- 49:38Phil: True.
- 49:38Phil: My coin?
- 49:39Tad Eggleston: What is it? It's… it's, it's $20.
- 49:42Phil: $20 for…
- 49:43Tad Eggleston: 151 volumes.
- 49:45Phil: That is… that is so many volumes.
- 49:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I bought the… I bought the Hellboy bundle, like, months ago, and I'm still not through everything that's in it.
- 49:53Tad Eggleston: Oh, one of the wonderful things that Mignola has done with the Hellboy bundles is he tiers them all, so when the new one comes out…
- 50:03Tad Eggleston: It has everything before it, but, like, you can pay a lower price to get only the new.
- 50:09Tyler Johnson: I don't have.
- 50:10Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 50:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:12Phil: That's… that's awesome.
- 50:12Tad Eggleston: So, like, I wind up getting something with every Hellboy bundle, but it's… I'm not having to, like, re-buy the whole thing. No.
- 50:22Tad Eggleston: And yeah, no, I haven't come anywhere near reading it, but I now have PDFs available to me of, essentially.
- 50:30Tad Eggleston: all of Hellboy up until, like, last year.
- 50:34Tyler Johnson: I know.
- 50:35Tad Eggleston: And, like, all of the Hellboy universe.
- 50:38Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 50:39Tad Eggleston: Up until, like, last year.
- 50:41Phil: And it is… it is shocking how much of that universe is… is really damn good, honestly.
- 50:46Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 50:49Tad Eggleston: So, so, like, that's the other reason that I'm, I'm, I'm liking to,
- 50:54Tad Eggleston: In this era where gas prices are going up, oil prices are going up, etc, like, I want… I want people to make certain that they find Patreons and newsletters and whatnot, and pay artists directly, find ways to get money to the people that create things.
- 51:08Tad Eggleston: but also, like, I want you to have reading material for less expensive prices, and… and maybe, like, help a charity. Yeah. And that's what makes Humble Bundle wonderful.
- 51:21Tad Eggleston: Anything else on Zombies Today at the World?
- 51:25Phil: That's, that's pretty much it. It's, you know, I, I, I can imagine someone…
- 51:30Phil: being handed this, you know, and being told, oh, this is that Walking Dead that everyone's so fond of, and just, just absolutely throwing them for a loop, you know?
- 51:40Tad Eggleston: Alright, Tyler, I read this ages ago and don't remember much of it, but it's crime comics for first degree, so, like, obviously I want you to talk about it in general, but I also want you, if you can, to talk to me about
- 51:58Tad Eggleston: the difference between European and U.S. crime comics.
- 52:02Tyler Johnson: Oh, sure.
- 52:03Tad Eggleston: Because I guarantee that, like, that's something that we noticed when we were reading The Inkle and when we were reading The Killer, is, like, they definitely have different pacing, different…
- 52:15Tad Eggleston: sensibilities.
- 52:16Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 52:16Tad Eggleston: They make comics.
- 52:19Tad Eggleston: So, talk to me about the first degree anthology.
- 52:22Tyler Johnson: Well, I love… Right off David Aha's artwork. Do you guys remember Saul Bass? Do you know who that was?
- 52:29Tad Eggleston: Saul Bast.
- 52:30Tyler Johnson: Yeah, he was a graphic designer in the 50s and 60s that designed the intro for shows like My Three Sons.
- 52:39Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 52:39Tyler Johnson: I don't know, did you ever watch Nick at Night, or the old…
- 52:43Tad Eggleston: Some…
- 52:43Tyler Johnson: and stuff.
- 52:44Tad Eggleston: Oh, it looks like, it looks like he did,
- 52:47Tad Eggleston: He did the, the, the… the…
- 52:54Tad Eggleston: He did some movie posters, too.
- 52:56Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. Did a lot of movies.
- 52:58Tad Eggleston: Vertigo, Man with the Golden Arm?
- 53:00Tyler Johnson: Yep, so Soul Bass has always been a graphic designer that I've really emulated as far as, like.
- 53:06Tyler Johnson: those, silhouettes of things, as opposed to all the details. So when you look at David Aja's cover art for… for this book, it really…
- 53:17Tyler Johnson: resonated with me, going, oh, I remember that style of artwork, right? Because on first degree, it's the silhouette of the bullet and the bullets and the revolver, and the red background, it's just so simplistic, but yet also
- 53:38Tyler Johnson: It's heavy, you know what I mean?
- 53:40Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 53:41Tyler Johnson: Then, so you get into these crime stories of… the first one right off the bat is definitely, apropos to today, where a couple black men get their ass beaten just for being
- 53:53Tyler Johnson: Alive by the cops, you know?
- 53:56Tad Eggleston: Which is… Never the way it should work.
- 54:00Tyler Johnson: Yeah, no.
- 54:01Tyler Johnson: it's, it's crazy. And then, I, I really enjoyed how,
- 54:07Tyler Johnson: And when you talk about American, right, television, film, literature, it doesn't matter. It's fast, it's urgent, it's…
- 54:14Tyler Johnson: Crazy, you know what I mean? And then so…
- 54:19Tyler Johnson: you need an incident in American stuff to hook people right away, right? Some kind of incident, some kind of… some kind of, oh, here's why we're watching this, you know? And then the plot transition is always fast.
- 54:33Tyler Johnson: Whereas British, is where, you know, it's slower.
- 54:39Tyler Johnson: Bigger buildup, you know, when we tied… when we were talking about, the…
- 54:45Tyler Johnson: What's the book you just brought up?
- 54:46Tyler Johnson: Tad, before I started rambling…
- 54:48Tad Eggleston: Killer, maybe?
- 54:49Tyler Johnson: Right? Yeah, and slower. It's more psychological, it's more… it gets in your head a little bit. It's definitely, like, the slow burn that we've talked about, on other things.
- 55:02Tyler Johnson: what I like about this… This, anthology is you don't know
- 55:10Tyler Johnson: at all what's gonna happen? Because the stories are so short.
- 55:14Tyler Johnson: You know, the first one, Encounter by David F. Walker, is just right off the bat, it's just, like…
- 55:20Tyler Johnson: guy walking into a convenience store, you're like, oh, this is weird, and the convenience store calls the cops. So the minute he walks out.
- 55:27Tyler Johnson: he's being beaten to death. It's like a four-page story, and you're like, whoa!
- 55:33Tyler Johnson: It's just crazy. But I really enjoyed the length of these, you know? And…
- 55:39Tyler Johnson: I would have liked to have seen,
- 55:43Tyler Johnson: What's his name? Aha? David? Something?
- 55:47Tad Eggleston: David Aja.
- 55:49Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I would have liked to seen his artwork throughout. I think that would have been a really cool tie-in for all these stories, and just had a separate writer.
- 55:59Tyler Johnson: I think that would have been a nice tie-in to the whole thing, but that's only because I like his artwork.
- 56:04Tad Eggleston: Though, I mean, as I'm flipping through it, there's some pretty outstanding artwork here. I know.
- 56:09Tyler Johnson: I'm not complaining, I'm just saying, I'm just saying, I…
- 56:12Tyler Johnson: With anthologies, the change in artwork is always most jarring for me.
- 56:17Tad Eggleston: Is it?
- 56:18Tyler Johnson: And, but, you know…
- 56:20Tad Eggleston: I…
- 56:21Phil: that way sometimes.
- 56:22Tad Eggleston: I am gonna toss out, just as I'm flipping through pages here, like, something else is jumping at me that is really true of European versus American
- 56:34Tad Eggleston: comics.
- 56:35Tad Eggleston: A lot of the time, is the colors are… more muted?
- 56:44Tad Eggleston: but in a way that I think actually kind of brings out the emotion in detail.
- 56:51Tad Eggleston: If that makes sense?
- 56:53Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think sometimes with American comics, it's too… Bright! Here, have your blue.
- 57:02Tad Eggleston: Like, versus, like, a gray, rainy day, you know? Yup, I agree.
- 57:08Tyler Johnson: They're… the much more… the artwork is much more, like…
- 57:12Tyler Johnson: I don't know, apropos to the story, what's going on, you know what I mean?
- 57:17Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 57:17Tyler Johnson: Not only that, just British comics in general, the… the aesthetic.
- 57:21Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think most of these are French comics, not British, but…
- 57:25Tyler Johnson: What did I say?
- 57:26Tad Eggleston: You keep saying British.
- 57:27Tyler Johnson: Oh, did I? I meant French.
- 57:29Tad Eggleston: British is often somewhere in between.
- 57:32Tad Eggleston: British gets a lot of… of influence from both Band-Aid Disney and… and… I mean, at some point, we're gonna have to do some Rebellion 2000 AD stuff.
- 57:42Tad Eggleston: Cuz… Because that's… that's another feel.
- 57:45Tad Eggleston: They do humble bundles from time to time. We'll watch for it.
- 57:50Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 57:52Tyler Johnson: No, a French comic… yeah, sorry, French makes way more sense. The… the European, excuse me, in general,
- 58:00Tyler Johnson: I think it's…
- 58:02Tyler Johnson: the aesthetic, right? You look at it, and you can tell that this is European or this is American most of the time.
- 58:09Tyler Johnson: And I… I kind of like that, as being able to visually pick out what kind of book I'm looking at, you know?
- 58:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 58:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 58:19Tad Eggleston: But…
- 58:20Tyler Johnson: My favorite in the story, in the… in the whole…
- 58:24Tyler Johnson: and this, this whole thing was called premeditated.
- 58:28Tyler Johnson: I just like the way they used red throughout. Again, this is not new, but they used red throughout to be that defining color amongst all these, like, blacks, grays, and whites.
- 58:41Tad Eggleston: That's from Sydney Duncan and J.P. Malinga.
- 58:45Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 58:47Tyler Johnson: Very… it was very cool. It was very cool.
- 58:49Tad Eggleston: The second… the second story in the book.
- 58:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Unfortunately, because I was late to the game, I did not read all of them.
- 58:56Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, that happens. Yeah.
- 58:58Tad Eggleston: That's one of the advantages of choosing an anthology, and it's one of the reasons I chose anthologies to… for next week, and… and, like, gave you two weeks to do…
- 59:09Tad Eggleston: You know, had you picked your Disney books.
- 59:12Tad Eggleston: now, for two weeks from now, because I figure, you know, anything we get into the anthologies, we'll be able to give a feel, and… and then…
- 59:22Tad Eggleston: After that, it's just a matter of…
- 59:28Tad Eggleston: By the way, they are already in the folder, so… so you guys can go get them.
- 59:33Tyler Johnson: Those Disney books are great because, you know, right now, guys our age are suckers for nostalgia, right?
- 59:40Tad Eggleston: It's true.
- 59:41Tyler Johnson: Okay, me anyway, I should say me. And so, these old cartoons that I said I used to watch on Nickelodeon, and now they're available through this Disney package, awesome! You know?
- 59:51Tad Eggleston: Well, the book I read is, is, called Monsieur Jean. Yeah.
- 59:58Tad Eggleston: And I need to read more of it, because I… it's kind of a,
- 1:00:04Tad Eggleston: It's actually kind of a,
- 1:00:08Tad Eggleston: It reminds me a lot of, like.
- 1:00:12Tad Eggleston: coupling, or… or, to a slightly lesser extent, the IT crowd, like… like… British relational comedy?
- 1:00:23Tad Eggleston: shows, though it definitely has a French feel to it as well. The beginning of this book says that it's actually set between
- 1:00:33Tad Eggleston: volumes 3 and 4, so I assume that the volumes are in terms of When they were released, but…
- 1:00:40Tad Eggleston: But it sounds like they also then give you, oh, but this is time-wise.
- 1:00:46Tad Eggleston: Here, and essentially, like, it's a… it's a series of vignettes,
- 1:00:51Tad Eggleston: with Jean, and I forget the name of the friend who…
- 1:00:56Tad Eggleston: He's crashing on the couch over right now, and, like, they're late 20s to mid-30s-ish guys, and…
- 1:01:06Tad Eggleston: You know, they go out to clubs, they go to birthday parties.
- 1:01:10Tad Eggleston: they have or don't have relationships. Jean seems to have a theory on everything, and sometimes that makes him the most fascinating guy in the room, and sometimes that makes him the guy in the room that everybody wants to smack upside the head.
- 1:01:26Tad Eggleston: And it's just got a weird, cool humor to it. This volume, at least, is… is…
- 1:01:34Tad Eggleston: just, like… The, the only, only… Color is blue.
- 1:01:43Tad Eggleston: So, so, like, it's a black and white and blue comic?
- 1:01:49Tad Eggleston: I guess is the way to put it.
- 1:01:51Phil: Interesting.
- 1:01:52Tad Eggleston: I… Tyler would probably… let me…
- 1:01:54Tad Eggleston: Let me… let me pull… pull a little up and show it to Tyler, because he… he will give a better…
- 1:02:00Tad Eggleston: A-a- bet… better,
- 1:02:06Tyler Johnson: Guys, they do have to jump off in 10 minutes.
- 1:02:08Tad Eggleston: I know, I know. That's why I'm trying to move rapidly, Tyler.
- 1:02:13Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:02:16Tyler Johnson: I don't… okay, there we go. I was like, I don't see it.
- 1:02:19Tad Eggleston: How would you describe the artwork, Tyler?
- 1:02:23Tyler Johnson: Oh, I love it. It is, Okay, so…
- 1:02:27Tyler Johnson: it's kind of pop art in the fact that it's very flat. The blue is just a single field of blue with some white poking out, and then over the top of that, they've done the design.
- 1:02:42Tyler Johnson: It's probably not chalk, but more crayon, but it looks like…
- 1:02:47Tyler Johnson: It's got that childlike quality to it of somebody drawing with a color crayon on top of colored paper.
- 1:02:55Tyler Johnson: And I really like that that white really pops, you know what I mean?
- 1:03:00Tad Eggleston: And the stories are… they're kinda, like…
- 1:03:06Tyler Johnson: So, I mean, essentially, the only color that's being used here is the blue, and the black… the black is basically the key that would go on top of it to make it all look right, and the white is just white paper showing through, you know?
- 1:03:19Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 1:03:20Tyler Johnson: It's really just pretty sweet, the way they did it.
- 1:03:23Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 1:03:24Tad Eggleston: But then, then, like, the stories themselves are… I like, I like some of these, where, like… see how there's no outline of the word balloon?
- 1:03:32Tad Eggleston: The word love is just the one.
- 1:03:34Tyler Johnson: That's what I've been trying to put on, like, why does that seem softer? And that's…
- 1:03:37Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:03:38Tyler Johnson: There's no outlines on the word blue, it's like someone just erased.
- 1:03:40Tad Eggleston: Some of them, not all of them, but yeah.
- 1:03:44Tyler Johnson: don't. The ones that, don't seem to be as more pertinent don't have outlines on them. Right. But the ones where it's more direct conversation.
- 1:03:54Tyler Johnson: do.
- 1:03:58Tad Eggleston: And again, like this story right here, he's talking about what's the worst thing that can happen is you're getting hot and heavy.
- 1:04:05Tad Eggleston: And he's like, you always think about, like, making certain you wear good underwear and whatnot, but… but what happens if, as you're getting naked with your date, it turns out that you forgot to put on a pair of good socks, and you're…
- 1:04:18Tad Eggleston: big toes sticking out of a hole, and it just ruins the mo… I mean, that's the kind of humor it is.
- 1:04:24Tyler Johnson: It's like…
- 1:04:25Tad Eggleston: this… this… Dark, but not in, like, a violent way, just in a kind of…
- 1:04:31Tad Eggleston: I don't… I don't know, I can't… can't find the right word, but… but it's like this… this midlife crisis-type humor.
- 1:04:42Tyler Johnson: see that.
- 1:04:44Tad Eggleston: Mostly understated, a lot of people just talking to each other, but with some great expressions.
- 1:04:54Tad Eggleston: And definitely something that I can't…
- 1:04:57Tad Eggleston: I can't think of anything in the United States to really compare it to, certainly among the major publishers.
- 1:05:05Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm certain if we really dug into indie, indie comics and, like, phantographics and whatnot, we might find something that has some of this feel. We brought up… Peep Show is on Final Order Cutoff. Peep Show has a little bit more of this feel, or a little bit of this feel, but I think overall is more depressing.
- 1:05:25Tad Eggleston: This, like…
- 1:05:28Tad Eggleston: This is depressing if you get up close, and still funny if you're even, like, 10 feet away. You don't have to be, like, aerial to see the, you know…
- 1:05:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so… so yeah, it was a… it was a fun read. I will definitely, like Phil, wanting to, to read more of the…
- 1:05:51Tad Eggleston: the zombies. I have already loaded the rest of it onto my tablet to read more of this, because it was just cool.
- 1:06:01Tad Eggleston: So, there is our brief walk through the,
- 1:06:07Tad Eggleston: Humanoid's Humble Bundle that you have, what, how many more days?
- 1:06:13Tad Eggleston: To, to go get… Somebody got it in front of you.
- 1:06:18Phil: Too many,
- 1:06:19Tad Eggleston: Now, I know we're coming up on the end of it.
- 1:06:21Phil: Yeah, the humanoids…
- 1:06:23Tad Eggleston: 5th.
- 1:06:24Phil: Yeah, so just a couple more days from the time you're listening to this.
- 1:06:27Tad Eggleston: Though, I don't know that it's been extended, and a lot of things have been extended lately, so there might be… there might be as much as a week. But still, don't sleep on it.
- 1:06:37Tad Eggleston: And then, then next week, we're gonna…
- 1:06:41Tad Eggleston: we're gonna start taking a look at this, this Phantographics Disney Humble Bundle, because,
- 1:06:47Tad Eggleston: It's another one that… that…
- 1:06:53Tad Eggleston: Has some stuff that isn't necessarily stuff that we spend a lot of time with, but is still…
- 1:06:58Tad Eggleston: like, really, really brilliant stuff, and I think that that's always a fun thing to highlight. But Tyler's on the clock, and I'm mostly just rambling right now, so I'm gonna get into, three books I hope will be spectacular. First, I'm gonna say I know…
- 1:07:17Tad Eggleston: The Huelga, the stories of Dolores Huerta and Sal Castro from Henry Barajas, Louis Chin, and Gab Contreras from Good Trouble, is spectacular, as is Islands in the Sky, A People's History of Hurricane Helene by a cast of
- 1:07:36Tad Eggleston: Not thousands, but many, many amazing
- 1:07:39Tad Eggleston: comic people, and, and, put together by, by Andrew Iden for Appalachian Comics, or the Appalachia Comics Project and Good Trouble is also absolutely spectacular. Those both come out this week.
- 1:07:53Tad Eggleston: ones I'm looking forward to the most, and this first one, I actually… I've had a preview copy on my tablet forever, and I just haven't managed to read it, so it might be what I do when we get off. It's called Cha-Chu.
- 1:08:05Tad Eggleston: Number one from Iman Velani and Mariana Ignaci and Jordy Belair at Image. Then we have Tom King's second Archie comic, Jughead, Pimageddon, with Dan Parent.
- 1:08:18Tad Eggleston: From Archie, and then Endeavor number 3, the… I think the conclusion to this… this story from Stephanie Phillips and Mark Lamming at Distillery.
- 1:08:29Tad Eggleston: I'm also really looking forward to and suspect that it starts with anger, a punk beginning, an Afropunk ending from James Spooner at Pantheon will wind up being
- 1:08:41Tad Eggleston: my top book of that next week. We'll see how that plays. I pre-ordered a digital copy earlier today, so I'll be able to get a head start on reading it.
- 1:08:52Tad Eggleston: Phil, what's your, A giant-sized trade waiter book.
- 1:08:58Phil: This week, my giant-sized trade waiter pick is, once again, Albion, from Alan Moore.
- 1:09:04Tad Eggleston: bleeding.
- 1:09:05Phil: Moore, John Repiant, Shane Oakley, and George Freeman, from Rebellion. Yeah, this is one that I… I had, I had…
- 1:09:12Phil: picked out, and it unfortunately was the wrong date that it was coming out. This time I did double-check League of Comic Geeks against, the lunar distribution, and it does look like this book is coming out this week, so, I… I, for one, will…
- 1:09:26Tad Eggleston: It is, it is coming out this week, according to Lunar Distribution. Yes. So, so this time, you are correct, sir.
- 1:09:33Phil: Well, this time, I cross-referenced, so I didn't want to be caught unawares on the same book twice in a row.
- 1:09:39Tyler Johnson: I've been caught unaware many times.
- 1:09:42Phil: Well, I think the first one…
- 1:09:43Tyler Johnson: This is a League of Comic Book Schemes.
- 1:09:45Phil: The first one I looked at was… actually got pushed to next week, so we'll see if I remember to pick it.
- 1:09:50Tad Eggleston: Well, and one of the things that I always say, and I love League of Comic Geeks, I never want to bash them, but one of the things that I try to remind people, both
- 1:10:04Tad Eggleston: both who are hosting this show and who listen to this show, is, League of Comic Cakes is user-supported, so, like, its dates are generally whatever was in the catalog when it got uploaded initially,
- 1:10:20Tad Eggleston: Unless somebody happened to notice and go, here, let me go put in the edit, and it goes through the whole review process to get changed.
- 1:10:28Phil: Right.
- 1:10:28Tad Eggleston: Which often… Yeah, I mean, it will often wind up happening… After the book came out.
- 1:10:35Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:36Tad Eggleston: other than before. Which is… Or at least after it doesn't come out.
- 1:10:41Phil: Right, which I'm glad… I'm very glad that they had updated their site when it didn't come out to the actual release date, which it looks like now… now is where it will be.
- 1:10:50Tad Eggleston: Right. Because, like, who wants to spend their time going through and going, oh, what release dates changed this week?
- 1:11:00Phil: Yeah, right.
- 1:11:01Tad Eggleston: through and update
- 1:11:03Tad Eggleston: I mean, on one side, it would be cool if publishers did that, but they don't, and that's okay.
- 1:11:09Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:11:10Phil: Certainly something.
- 1:11:12Tyler Johnson: Alright, well, guys, I'm gonna take us outta here.
- 1:11:16Tyler Johnson: Because we got Phil, Tradeweeder, right?
- 1:11:18Phil: Yep, yep.
- 1:11:19Tyler Johnson: Okay, I'm gonna… I'm gonna head to church with my family.
- 1:11:23Phil: No!
- 1:11:24Tyler Johnson: I know, I know, sorry.
- 1:11:26Tyler Johnson: But you guys have a great day, and our listeners out there, we will catch you guys after the next page.
- 1:11:34Tyler Johnson: Later!
