- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Genesis forty two The Dreams Come True During the famine in Canaan, Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: So he said to his sons, Why are you sitting here doing nothing?
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Go there and buy grain for us so that we will live and not die.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: So ten of Joseph's brothers went to Egypt to buy grain.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Jacob did not send Benjamin.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Benjamin was Joseph's only full brother.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Jacob was afraid that something bad might happen to Benjamin.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: The famine was very bad in Canaan, so there were many people from Canaan who went to Egypt to buy grain.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Among them were the sons of Israel.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Joseph was the governor of Egypt at the time.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: He was the one who checked the sale of grain to the people who came to Egypt to buy it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Joseph's brothers came to him and bowed before him.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he acted like he didn't know them.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: He was rude when he spoke to them.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: He said, Where do you come from?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: The brothers answered, We have come from the land of Canaan to buy food.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not know who he was.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Then Joseph remembered the dreams he had dreamed about his brothers.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Joseph said to his brothers, You have not come to buy food, you are spies.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: But the brothers said to him, No, sir, we come as your servants.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: We have come only to buy food.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: We are all brothers, we all have the same father.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: We are honest men, we've come only to buy food.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Then Joseph said to them, No, you've come to spy on us.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And the brothers said, No, sir, we come as servants from Canaan.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: We are all brothers, sons from the same father.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: There are twelve brothers in our family.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Our youngest brother is still at home with our father, and the other brother died a long time ago.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But Joseph said to them, No, I can see that I am right.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: You are spies, but I will let you prove that you are telling the truth.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: In the name of Pharaoh, I swear I will not let you go until your youngest brother comes here.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: One of you must go back to get your youngest brother while the rest of you stay here in prison.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Then we can prove whether you are telling the truth or not.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: If you are not telling the truth, then by Pharaoh I swear that you are spies.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Then Joseph put them all in prison for three days.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: The troubles begin.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: After three days Joseph said to them, I am a God fearing man, do this and I will let you live.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: If you are honest men, one of your brothers can stay here in prison and the others can go and carry grain back to her people.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: But then you must bring your youngest brother back here to me.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Then I will know that you are telling the truth and you will not have to die.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: The brothers agreed to this.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: They said to each other, We are being punished for the bad thing we did to our younger brother Joseph.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: We saw the trouble he was in.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: He begged us to save him, but we refused to listen.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: So now we are in trouble.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Then Reuben said to them, I told you not to do anything bad to that boy, but you refused to listen to me.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Now we are being punished for his death.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Joseph was using an interpreter to talk to his brothers, so that the brothers did not know that he understood their language.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: He heard and understood everything they said, and that made him want to cry.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: So he turned away and left the room.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: When he came back, he took one of the brothers, Simeon, and tied him up while the others watched.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Joseph told the servants to fill the bags with grain.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: The brothers had given Joseph money for the grain, but he didn't keep the money.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: He put the money in their bags of grain.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Then he would give them what they would need for their trip back home.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: So the brothers put the grain on their donkeys and left.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: That night the brothers stopped at a place to spend the night.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: One of the brothers opened his sack to get some grain for his donkey.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And there in the sack he saw his money.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: He said to the other brothers, Look, here's the money I paid for the grain.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Someone put the money back in my sack.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: The brothers were very afraid.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: They said to one another, What is God doing to us?
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: The brothers report back to Jacob.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: The brothers went back to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: They told him about everything that had happened.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: They said, The governor of that country spoke rudely to us.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: He thought that we were spies.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: We told him we were honest men, not spies.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: There are 12 of us brothers, all from the same fathers.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: One of our brothers is no longer living, and the youngest is still at home with our father.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Then the governor of that country said to us, Here's the way to prove that you are honest men.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Leave one of your brothers here with me.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Take your grain back to your families.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Bring your youngest brother to me.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Then I will know if you are honest men or if you are sent from an army to destroy us.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: If you are telling the truth, I will give your brother back to you.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: I will give him to you, and you will be free to buy grain in our country.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Then the brothers started taking the grain out of their sacks, and every brother found his bag of money in his sack of grain.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: When the brothers and their fathers saw the money, they were afraid.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Jacob said to them, Do you want me to lose all of my children?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Joseph is gone, Simeon is gone, and now you want to take Benjamin away too?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: But Reuben said to his father, Father, you may kill my two sons if I don't bring Benjamin back to you.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Trust me, I will bring him back to you.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: But Jacob said, I will not let Benjamin go with you.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: His brother is dead, and he is the only son left from my wife Rachel.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: It would kill me if anything happened to him during the trip to Egypt.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: You would send me to the grave, a very sad old man.
