All right. It's a button push It is. I can see it right- It's time.
0:07
[rock music] [singing] Obstacles.
0:30
[singing] Obstacles. [laughs] Was it obstacles or is it testicles? I can never figure that out. Obstacles. Popsicles. Pop, pop. Right? It's pop... That's what I thought. Okay. Hey, Jeff. Hey, everybody.
0:41
It's, [laughs] it's Full Spectrum Cycling Show number 280. Hey, hey. 280th one of these we're doing. Wow. It is a, that's a wow right there. Wow. Uh, so welcome. We got Tony. Hi. We got JK. What's going on?
0:55
We, we've got all you guys. How's it going? Hi. Hello. Uh, someday we make, we can live stream this. You got like a, a, a chicken feather in your glasses or something. For you. Or no, oh no, maybe that's just your hair.
1:06
Never mind. [laughs] It's kind of... It was kind of... It looked like it was- [laughs] It did. It did. Yeah, yeah. Like a- Looked like it was stuck in your hinge on your glasses It's just my old man hair.
1:14
No, now it's under there, so you don't have to worry about it. The dandelion. You won't, you won't offend any of our listener, so. [sighs] Right on. Right on. Sorry about my hair. I have hair. Oh. Big news in- Yeah...
1:26
big news in Milwaukee. The Daily Bird is back. It was closed. Yeah. It was back. Two, two days? Closed for two days? Yeah. What, what's up with that? Well, I'm assuming they had to work out- What's up with that?...
1:35
some real estate deal to- What's up with that?... continue to be there. Or, yeah, or someone funded them some, floated them a loan or something. I don't know. I, I- However it worked, it's working...
1:45
it's too bright for me. Although, I did high-five Matt Baron, who was outside of it today, and ran out into the middle of the center so that I could, on my bike, come and high-five him on the way past. Ah.
1:57
So Matt Baron probably never listens to this piece of shit. You, sir, are a high-fiving motherfucker. I do like being a high-fiving motherfucker. Ah, I have dinged the bell.
2:04
That would be a, that would be a local H sound- Maybe like a H... just so people don't know I'm just being explicitly rude... because I did- It may have just been a slide by five.
2:10
I don't know what that's called, but anyway. But I've done, I've... Since I have my new bell, I utilize it- Awesome... right by the Baron estate. Nice. I'm just like, "Ah, yes." As we should. Ding. Yep, ding.
2:21
Must, must ding past the- Must, must ding past the Baron house. Ding goes the bell. Ding goes the... Fries are done. Ding, whatever. Uh- It's not quite... It's not even, it's not even Thanksgiving yet.
2:35
So- You can't do the Carol of the Bells yet. Right. Okay. One of my neighbor's houses is full Christmas reg- regalia right now. It's not even Thanksgiving. I know. I know. Man. Thanksgiving, man. Yeah.
2:45
Thanks for nothing, dude. [laughs] Uh, as good as the- Thanks for a blanket... Daily Bird thing is for most people... dude... those that aren't totally offended by the very yellow color- Yeah, it's bright...
2:56
as good as that is, this is the shit side of that deal, that they're closing down the Leinenkugel's breweries. Yeah. You know? Do you think it's gonna go the same way?
3:06
Like, oh, two weeks from now we'll hear that they're gonna keep the Chippewa Falls location open. Well, there's a lot of beef right now. Yeah. There's a lot of people complaining. I know.
3:14
You know, that is Chippewa Falls. Right. Well, it's corporations. Well, to be fair, I have not had a Leinenkugel's in probably five years, since they stopped sponsoring the stage at Summerfest would be my guess.
3:23
Shit, it's way longer than five years. Uh, no, they're still sponsoring the stage at Summer- That's, yeah, Summerfest is like the only time I'll have a damn Leinenkugel. Well, okay, so not, they're not the title sponsor.
3:32
US Cellular is the title sponsor. Right. Right. They might be the beer sponsor. They're not a Leiny Lodge anymore. Yeah, see? See? Leiny Lodge. Yeah. Yeah. I understand. I've- I've been s- woefully
3:45
slacking on getting my miles up for my 100-mile challenge for November, but I did- Well, you've got- I- You've got the shank of the month. Yes. Oh, no, I, it'll be fine. I just, I put a solid 1.18 in
4:00
yesterday, so I feel good. Oh. I feel good about that. Along the parking lot? Oh, I was testing out the, uh- Oh... the black electric fat bike that is now down the road. Nice.
4:11
And, uh, my buddy that bought it is 68, and his friend, who's, they're kind of gonna share it, is 74. 74-year-old guy takes it out easily, comes back, he's all like, "Yeah."
4:21
[laughs] Like, a big grin and, and I'm like- That's awesome... "Bob, Bob, you want a ride?" He's like, "Oh, it's too cold out." I'm like, "Okay." So this is gonna sit in his living room- Right. [laughs]...
4:28
all winter long, I'm pretty sure, so. I, uh, by the... Speaking of mileage, I've got over 650 miles on the long tail since we built it [laughs] Very nice... in August. I saw, I saw your, uh, what do they call it?
4:43
Sidecar plan, potentially. I'm very excited about that. Yeah. Those are... There are some smart people out there that look at that and say, "Hey, you can use a one-inch quill stem." Oh, is that what attaches it?
4:56
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Okay. [laughs] All right. I'll have to look at it real closely. And then you, and then you loosen it and adjust it up so you can tilt it up, and it's all...
5:02
The only thing you need to do is have a little bit of welding, which I've already messaged Dave Lunds about. Yeah, davelunds.com can do that for you. So yeah, one of his students.
5:10
Well, that, that, that does sound like a, uh, a good winter project. Uh-huh. Is, have you seen it actually in action riding? Well, they made, Xtracycle made one for it.
5:20
Okay, but did it d- They called it the Sidecar, but no... did it use stems to, to do the hinge? [laughs] No, it did not. No. The, the, no, that's, that's genius, 'cause that's way thicker than whatever Xtracycle used.
5:29
Right on. I mean, it's a stem. Well, I, yeah, we've... A couple of little fab projects over the winter would be fun. We're getting Carolyn's ex- not extra, big dummy coming in. For NYC?
5:40
Yeah, finally on Friday, and been work- That'd be cool... been working on Adrian's GT Zaskar. Fucking Adrian. It's like, how far do you go to make it period specific? I'm like,
5:53
he doesn't- Depends on how much money you wanna put towards it... well, first, first of all, the handlebar and stem, he already just said, "Fuck that. I want something stiffer." So he's, it, something newer, you know?
6:00
Okay. Yeah, bigger diameter, whatever. And so that already says meh. I- I'm gonna digress just a little bit because- No...
6:10
we went into the whole how far do you wanna go to make it original, and I watched a video on a, uh, someone threw a Tesla motor into a 911, but made it really, really incredibly authentic.
6:23
And it goes to the how far will you go with the money? It's an $800,000 conversion. Yeah. I think, I- That's just the most- I'm-... crazy thing I, you know? I'm pretty sure given $800,000, I could make that happen, too.
6:40
Probably. You know how much Singer Porsches are now? Yeah, right. You c- you can't touch one for under a million. That's t- good point. And it's just like- Good point...
6:48
how you almost could start your own car company like, uh, DeLorean did, and build your own car for that kind of money and- Well-... 200, 200 pounds of cocaine.
6:57
[laughs] Always remember, it's not how far you go, it's how go you far. It's how go you far. That's pretty funny. Should we party now or we party next? Since I just opened this. [bell ringing] Oh, we got up here.
7:08
Ring a dingy dingy. Right. We might, uh, we might have a, should have thought about this, but we might have a, uh, we will have a guest calling in. Wait, wait, wait. It's All Day IPA.
7:18
They're call- they're calling in all day? The, the wedding- [laughs] The wedding beer continues... keeps, the wedding keeps giving. The wedding leftovers. Here's what I like to say about All Day IPA.
7:27
It's flavorful and easy drinking. It is. Most certainly. It says, it says it right on the can. Oh, there you go. So [laughs] I'm going with that. Speaking of wives, I saw your wife's bike locked outside of, uh,
7:40
uh, yeah, uh, Uptown-er yesterday as I was riding my bike. Narc. Narc. Oh, did I bust you? Did I bust her? Narc. Narc. Do you need me to do this whenever I see your bike? "Hey, look, there it is."
7:50
[laughs] 'Cause chances are you could be on it, too. What are you, some kind of cop or something? I thank God no. No. Although I got it fingerprinted so I can- No, no... support the UWM police.
7:58
No, she had the day off, so she got there early. And I got off and then- Well, they open at, they open at noon now, so. Well, yeah, but she was- It used to be 11:00... there at that. Used to be 11:00. I believe.
8:08
Well, on Mondays, well, it was Monday, and, uh, it was, uh, Mike Frederickson's birthday- Oh... who normally has the Monday, uh, noon-er shift. Ah. Copy that.
8:20
And, um, he of Mosley's and Bristle Head and artist extraordinaire. Awesome guy. Awesome guy. Yeah, he does a good job. So, um, it was fun to... And he was still sitting around the bar when I got there.
8:34
At f- 4:00 in the PM? Yeah, when it was dark. [laughs] Oh, shit. [laughs] Yeah, we have, well, there's- I was like, I was chasing the sunset... there's only- I'm just like, I want it to be at least a little bit like
8:45
bright-ish, day-ish when I leave. I don't need dark and dark evening. There's approximately f- uh, what would it be? 11 weeks left- Mm... w- before we're gonna be at the same...
8:58
Or it's like 10 weeks till we're at the same darkness today. Yeah. So it keeps getting darker for f- five more weeks- Five weeks-... or whatever... and then it starts increasing. Well, yeah, December- Yeah.
9:04
So it's only, it's only like-... 22nd I think is solstice. Right. Yeah. Seasonal- But that's not-... affective disorder... but that's- Engage... that's not when daylight savings time starts fucking with you. Oh, yeah.
9:15
Who cares about that shit? That's already started. [laughs] Right. Obviously. Well, no, it just accelerates it. Would y- wouldn't you rather go to work in the dark and come off with light than vice- Personally, yes.
9:25
Absolutely. Vice versa? Yeah. I, well, Wendy's the opposite. She, she doesn't- Well, we're pretty soon to where we're gonna be going to work in the dark and coming back in the dark. Mm-hmm. Well, yeah.
9:31
I mean, that's- I don't have to-... that's only two weeks, three weeks away... I don't have to for a little bit. So that's okay. Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. We could be living in Florida. Hmm. Yeah. No.
9:42
[laughs] Thought you'd like that. [laughs] N- America's weighing- Not, not, not going down... not America. Not gonna happen. Wouldn't be prudent. Would be prudent. Not going down there. No. Ever since- Yeah. Yeah.
9:53
Speaking of which, you see how he's imitating Elon Musk now, and he's all pissed off about it? What was that, George- Dan Carvey?... George Bush? [laughs] Dan Carvey is serious.
10:00
[laughs] No, S- George Bush does Elon Musk. Yeah. I think that'd be funny. [laughs] Boy, that would be funny. All right, let's, uh, let's- Sissy, you mean Sissy SpaceX?
10:08
You know, I prob- well, I should just leave- [laughs]... I should leave this one to him 'cause Dave's probably coming down for a rampage. So let's, let's couch the rampage till Dave calls.
10:17
Uh, there is a hi- here's how this gets in front of that other story that you were all worried about one being on top of the other, the winter bike party at- It's coming up, isn't it?... at Amorphic.
10:28
It's like December 4th or something? December 4th, 5:30. That's a Wednesday. Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday. A Wednesday evening, and if it's like what they've had over at our other one block away brewery-
10:43
Or down at- Or down at Transfer Pizzeria... Great Lakes. Yeah, it's been all over. Yeah. Great Lakes Distillery. Been down there. Yeah. It'll be some people talking about stuff they do- Want a tattoo...
10:52
to get through the winter on a bike. It's- Yeah... clothing you wear- Yeah... strategies for this. That's- Uh, there might even be an audiovisual show. And there might be a raffle.
11:03
That, that's the raffle I won the $200 tattoo- I think, you know what I got-... gift card on... from one of those raffles? I got a, uh, Bontrager.
11:10
It's a, it's a pump that you pump up, and then it has a quick release valve so it's supposed to- That's fucking genius... it's supposed to seat your- Sh- oh, that matters... your tubeless tires.
11:21
And I didn't find that it was all that effective- Okay... at that, sometimes anyway. At least not with that- It'd be cooler pumping up a tube quick, though.
11:28
Well, you're pumping anyway, and then you just do it, and it would go- Excuse me, what were you just doing there? That's right, gay boys. Pumping. Anyway. It's all about the hangover. Yeah. Look at that. Is it?
11:41
I saw your costume recently. Ah, yes. I saw what that was. Is this the PF Chang's? Uh, here's something we could talk about. We could talk about the stuff that's right there that's, uh, those are premiums.
11:56
Tony, you could hold them up maybe a little bit. Those are premiums for your local WMSC 91.7 station. I do. I love that goblet.
12:04
If you donate, and I would like to donate more to get another goblet because I do like that goblet. I already have a couple of those mugs, and it rounds out the cabinet nicely. Plus- I, they really drink well.
12:14
I know you guys got a bunch of new mugs to mess with now. You got your, uh, you got your podcast MKE mug. I used my podcast MKE mug this week. How does it... It, it works pretty well. It's fine. It's 15 ounces.
12:24
Yeah, it allows me to drink a lot of coffee. And- It's perfect for soup. I had a cup of soup in it. Oh, nice. Um, so yeah. So it's tall. So this is a new one this year.
12:33
Those are the, uh, those are- Look, I can wear them up to my elbows... those are the, uh, mittens made out of some kind of polar fleece material. Give me...
12:42
You know, I'll get my tent sealer and then, then you're all clean. Oh, that might not be a bad idea. Ah, some occasional Mike has some idea. Look, it still allows me... It has so much dexterity, I can still hold my beer.
12:54
My fingers swim inside here. Amazing. And of course, the guitar smasher pin, which is... You know, I didn't- I believe when you review the footage- I don't-... you will see that I already displayed- So what I think-...
13:05
the guitar smasher pin... I'm not positive, I'm pretty sure that this amount of stuff is what you get for doing $20 a month. Yeah. Because I still have $240 left
13:17
to do more premiums with, and I'm like, "I don't really- Oh, is there... You, really? There is that- I am gonna go for another goblet, though... I think it's, I think it's, I think it's 10, 20, 40.
13:24
Well- I think that's how it- Yeah... 40. However it works. I think. And, and I will always put stuff in my pocket. I mean- That's right, Ryan. I'm gonna take stuff. I, I, I'm not. [laughs] I'm kidding. I'm just not.
13:36
Um- I mean, I... The mug is cute, but I got so many mugs. Uh- Molly would love the wine glass. Well, that was- There's a wine glass... and that's why I would get two of those, 'cause Sydney- Yeah...
13:43
and Wendy, blah, blah, blah. Right. Well, then you've got a good- Oh, now I spoiled it, 'cause she'll probably listen to this before, before, [laughs] um, Christmas- I mean, oh...
13:50
'cause those could have, those would have made a great Christmas present. They were, totally would have. So, so would those mittens, though, for certain people with very, very large hands. Like Red Hot Chili Peppers?
14:00
They're really big hands. [laughs] Thank you. Oh, boy. Oh, the TV just turned off. Pictures just got painted. I guess we didn't pay enough attention to that. Oh, no, it did, a while ago. Five seconds. All right.
14:12
So I, I, I did title this one [laughs] "Is it April Fools' Day already?" Because there was a- That's-...
14:22
there was a one-day thing, I don't think I've seen it more recently than that, where they're talking about this Trek steel full suspension bike possibility, not necessarily full on production, but it came out of their- It-...
14:35
development shop, and it- It looks pretty freaking beautiful. It looks fucking cool. I, I, I don't know. It looks good. I don't know. I- The pipe- I'm not sure... pipe dream- Is steel dead?
14:45
I mean, what- I think there's a, there's a market for it. I... Totally is a market for that. It's bigger over in Europe than here probably, and England. Huge in Japan. It's big in England.
14:53
Oh, speaking of Japan, did you see the next couple down the list there, that, uh- Big in Japan... boom, boom, boom. Chunk. The bottom one, Crumworks. Crum- Crumworks. Yeah, they're- Chunk...
15:02
they're a Japanese fillet braising house that uses your tangy prestige material to make... Click on the link- Ooh... because you gotta see how cool it looks. It's, it's, it's- What is 126,500 yen?
15:15
Well, I think the frame and fork were around- Like $28? No. No. No, they're around... The for- frame and fork is, like, 2,100. It's not inexpensive. Uh- But it is- It's really gorgeous...
15:26
well, see what a Dave Wages made bike would cost that he did that kind of work on. Oh, wow. You gotta find the one with the seat tube. It's got dual top tubes. It's, it's very cool. Oh. Crum- Crumworks.
15:36
It's, this one's called the- God... it's called the Chunk. It's a- That is really beautiful... and 30, 33,000 yen more, you get it powder-coated. So that's like 250 bucks. I... Yeah. I don't know.
15:50
Well, if you say it right- Well, say it's got a Teasdale fork with extra brazings... you could say it's $12 more, I'd fucking buy it.
15:55
It has the same look of a Teasdale fork with triple brazings for the, you know, new fancy triple pump. Oh, yeah. Well, you gotta have your stuff. Gotta have your attachment points. Yeah. Oh, God. That's pretty.
16:06
Sorry, I got, I got distracted by the- Oh, and it's all gold braised too... currency conversion. [laughs] It's all gold braised. This is f- oh, God. Uh, you guys talk amongst yourselves. I'm going to, uh,
16:21
do a little texty thing here. Oh, that's... I don't like it painted. I'd rather- No, I think the raw looks good... or I'd rather raw it and go. Raw dogging. Oof. How much is that? Like 2,200 bucks?
16:37
Yeah, something like that. Yen conversion. Oh. You can hardly... You can't... Bike, you know, stuff isn't cheap anymore. I saw a fancy new fat bike. These 750 Bs or... Oh, sorry. Yeah. I, that's a good question.
16:47
I didn't look at the tire size yet on it. Uh, hey, I got a button to push over here. Oh, God, this is cool. Dave's gotta look at this too. All right, I got a button to push. Oh. You all right? Yeah.
17:00
Which button did you, did you hit there? I pushed the button, it went ugh. The internal one? [laughs] Welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? It's Sealy Dave. Oh.
17:10
I've been, I've been in the green room for quite a long time. Oh, have you? Oh, Greg. I w- it just popped up on the screen. Or Sam. It was really weird. Yeah. I know. So you've been in there for a long time?
17:21
No, I've been- Huh. Yes. That's weird. Yeah, since pre-Santa rampage discussion. Oh, okay. Whoa. Well, well sorry about that.
17:27
It didn't, uh, it, it didn't automatically update and somehow now I saw it on there, I'm like, you know. That's why- Hm... that's why I texted you. I'm like, "Where the fuck is Dave? It's nine minutes later."
17:37
[laughs] Right, I, I- No worries... I was trying to reply to your text before you sent one to me, because I heard you say that. Oh. [laughs] Dave.
17:47
I figured it was a thing if you were texting me [laughs] but I couldn't quite get it out fast enough to- That's, uh- Yeah... that's your technology there, folks. Hey, technology. Have, have you, uh- Yeah...
17:56
speaking of technology- Totally... Dave, have you watched any of the recent YouTube episodes with the camera thing going on? Of the- I haven't yet, no. Do- Um-... do me a solid and watch- Yeah, I-...
18:07
a couple of the most recent episodes. Okay. And we got a- I will... we got a three-camera thing with a switcher and stuff, and I'm just kind of-...
18:14
trying it out and also trying to do that while I do the show, which is not that easy to do, but- It's fun to watch, though. Yeah. Um, I don't know. I think it- Yeah...
18:22
and it's just, this is- I had kind of, I kind of been on a m- a, a media blackout for a while there. Um- I understand... but, uh, pre-election and post-election, so.
18:33
Oh, um, does- Um, but I'm kind of- No, it makes perfect sense. [laughs] Yeah, right. Yeah, not like the usual kind as much as just, I don't know, I guess maybe like the usual kind.
18:43
But so yeah, I'll, I'll definitely check that out. Um, I'll, uh, I'll, uh, I'm back on, on the interwebs, so I'll take a look and see what, uh...
18:55
I've also been quite busy, um, in my never-ending battle with flying squirrels, so- Oh, okay Oh. So being retired doesn't mean- So I've been doing that too. But, um- Being retired doesn't mean your work is done.
19:07
[laughs] No, it does not. Yeah. Did you- It does not. Um- Did you say flying- are they flying squirrels? Yeah. Not monkeys. Yeah, that's the... Yeah, yeah, flying squirrels- Oh...
19:18
in the rental that Matt Hewitt and Liv Franczek are in until this weekend. Oh. You gotta tell him Matt Hewitt and- Oh, that's... Okay. Gotcha. And, and Liv. Yes, and Liv. Yeah. Nice. Yeah. I did- Yeah, and Liv, yeah...
19:29
talk to somebody about how great your place is. But they found a place and are moving out. In the- So now they found a place and are moving out, um- In Hayward or around Hayward, or...? So... In Cable, in Cable. Yeah.
19:39
Oh, okay. Right on. They found a place up by Telemark. So, so there's a- Yeah... there's a few more things available up there these days than there were, you know, five, four or five y- four years ago.
19:48
Uh, it's still slim pickings.
19:50
They actually found their place off-market that Matt happened to be, 'cause he was running the Trek store, um, he was in kind of an ideal place to meet people and, and say, "Hey, we're looking for a place." [laughs] Oh.
20:05
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Okay. And he managed to take their offer- Oh, right on. All right... before it was off-market. So he was at the- They, they bought it off-market. Um- He was at the Trek store at, uh, Telemark? Yeah.
20:15
Right on. Yeah. He's, he quit, though, he...
20:18
While there, he got a job offer for, uh, um, A- Ashland County or Bayfield County to, uh, to go back to doing, you know, what he was doing last in Milwaukee when he was working for Milwaukee County, which, you know, cutting down trees and plowing roads and stuff like that.
20:35
So- Yeah. Infrastructure stuff... so he left the Trek store right as the Trek store was closing, and, uh, he's working for Bayfield County now. But and they found a place to move to, so they close this weekend, so- Cool.
20:47
Cool... yeah. So that's good news for them, anyway. So- And it means our rental will be back open. Um, and we're not gonna put it on Airbnb. Um, we're just gonna have it open for friends, so friends and family.
21:00
So- That sounds like a good plan. It's an awesome place, and I, well certainly- Yeah. I mean, I'm not-... several of, several of my friends- Yeah...
21:06
have stayed there, or people you know too, but they're all like, "Yeah, it's kick-ass." 'Cause when we were up there- Right. Yeah... when we were up there for, uh, Jerry's thing- Yeah... the place we stayed in wasn't...
21:16
It was a pretty nice place. I don't know if you know which, which property it is, but it was expensive. It was like- I don't... oh, $350 a night- Yeah... or something.
21:25
But we did slam eight people in there, so I guess it was all right. Yeah, but because it was big, so it was- Yeah, that's pretty cheap there... it, it worked out all right, for sure. Yeah. Um, cool. Yeah.
21:33
So what's, what's new with Dave Schlabowski? Silly Dave. Well, so- Silly Dave, sorry. Silly Dave. Um- Sven. Yeah. [laughs] Either way. Greg. Um, Sven. Sven.
21:44
Um, so, uh, [laughs] Greg- Tony's, Tony's other name is Dick, so. [laughs] [laughs] Girls, girls, girls. This is Mrs. Gareth and shit. It's actually Richard, 'cause he's a big Dick. [laughs] Winning, winning.
21:57
[laughs] All right then. Yeah. Sorry about that. We're back now. [laughs] No worries.
22:06
So one of the other things that I took a break from other than just, like, viewing, uh, you know, stuff online and things like that was, uh, you, you probably have noticed I haven't done any of my own podcasting for quite some time.
22:22
Part of it has been the whole squirrel eviction abatement program- [laughs]... that I've been working on full time. It sucks. Um, but that's part of it. But that's part of the reason.
22:32
But, um, but the other part of it is, like, the longer that whole election cycle went, the more I just kind of became, uh, I don't know, um,
22:48
less e- enamored with my fellow American. Numb. [laughs] Um, it was- Yeah. You're, you're not alone there, sir. You are not alone... it was a very numbing agent. I know, I know, I know. Um, and- That's-...
23:01
and it just sort of like, I, I just kept feeling more and more like, eh, I don't know, you know?
23:08
I mean, I spent my whole adult career as either, you know, a journalist/documentary photographer, you know, working for Sandinistas, going to Haiti, you know, all kinds of...
23:20
The garbage dump in Guatemala City, you know, and then, you know, the drug houses in Milwaukee, all kinds of things that try to, like, you know, kind of light on fire- I'm surprised you never saw me at one of, at one of the places.
23:32
[laughs]... this franchise. [laughs] Yeah, it's like, oh, thank God we got those, uh- I didn't cure poverty... those candid photos. Yeah, right. Thanks. Thanks, Dave.
23:39
Yeah, these, the drug places I was at were not the kind that you probably maybe- [laughs]... frequent. The kinds that I frequent. [laughs] These were- This has gotten dark fast... more of a lifestyle choice. Yeah, yeah.
23:50
True that. Yeah. There's a... Right. There is, there is not- Classy, classy, classy drugs... there is not a thing called, there's not a thing called a smokey pipe. And then a, and then a bike advocate, right? Sure.
23:58
Right. And then I ended my career as a bike advocate. Right? So my whole career has kind of been like a salmon swimming upstream- Mm...
24:05
trying to, like, do good things, maybe leave the world a little bit better place, you know, stuff like that.
24:12
And between the whole pandemic- The initial Trump, you know, election where he got elected the first time, and then this most recent one, I've kind of lost all faith in, in, you know, at least American humanity.
24:28
[laughs] Totally. Mm-hmm. And, and I'm trying to come to grips with, I'm trying to come to grips with how to bring that back to, like, at least, you know, "Hey, we all gotta... I'm not gonna kill myself," you know?
24:40
No, heck no. I mean, I want to still enjoy the rest of my life. [laughs] What, what are we gonna do? And so, and then up here, perhaps more so than down by you- Oh, it's gotta be horrible...
24:50
southern more so than down by you guys. Like, well, I mean, it's 50/50 up here. It just splits 52% to 48 or the other way sometimes. You know, Bayfield County, I think, went a- blue by 11%. Yeah.
25:03
Um, Sorrel County was red. Um, but, but either way, I run into a lot more people that I know vote differently than I do. Mm. And many of them are active cyclists in the community.
25:18
And many of them are very nice people, right? I mean- Yeah, for sure... they're... I've never had a pro- Other than they may have, maybe have a Trump hat sitting on the dashboard of their pickup truck.
25:29
But other than that, I don't get into arguments with them. Good bring that truck. They don't bring up politics. I get along with them. They'll help me out if I need help. Uh, you know, whatever, you know.
25:40
Um, we joke around. Uh, I got friends of mine on my old bike team from Milwaukee that, um, are, you know, law enforcement officers and I'm fair- I didn't ask, but I'm fairly sure they voted Trump.
25:54
Again, longtime friends of mine, right? Yeah. Um, and, and but- It just makes you go, Dave-... this election feels-... it makes you go, "Hmm"... a little bit... That, that's what it does. It- Right.
26:04
This election- It just makes me go, "Hmm"... feels more different than before. I- This, this one feels more like- People were informed of- I-... what they could have been voting for- It-...
26:16
and voted that way anyways I, I'm- That's what pisses me off... I'm just gonna settle- Right... real quickly with the, you know, the basic sentence of, [tsks] "They're eating the dogs." And that's our new, uh- Right.
26:29
And yet somehow- [laughs]... people still voted for this dumbass All that, all that sort of nonsense. All right. [sighs] I know. We're gonna lose- So I'm getting mad. So I'm not, we're gassed up.
26:38
But so how do we, but so how do we, my- The DHS is Kristi Noem My question is- She's cute, though. She shoots the dogs. I, and I don't want to relive all that. We, we- Yeah. No... there's, there's a gazillion- Yeah...
26:47
examples of that, right? Yeah. There's a gazillion examples. Sorry. No, that was a dovetail. And, and this, and this show- And there's a lot more-... does not endorse or- No. [laughs]...
26:54
[laughs] avow any of these positions. [laughs] Yes. I, okay. And, and right. But so I'm, I'm struggling with- Mm... how do I, how do I
27:08
s- still view these folks that, like I said, I've never had a reason to be angry with or- Well-... they've never been jerks or anything You're, you're going to in the next four years...
27:21
you know, how do you, how do you balance that? Uh, don't take- Well, I don't know. Like if, if they don't- We don't, we don't, we don't know what's gonna happen... if they start gloating, yeah, disconnect. Yeah.
27:30
It, yeah. I think- Right. I mean, well- If they start gloating, disconnect... but I, I'm still looking at- But just let them wait. Just wait and they'll- But as a-... they'll figure out they did wrong.
27:38
[laughs] But as a- They did stupid... I don't know. Uh, I don't know that they will. And, and- Right... I guess my, my... What I'm struggling with more is just, like, I feel pretty strongly about this- Mm... and, and I
27:54
don't, I don't know how to balance the fact that somebody... What does it mean if someone is pleasant and kind to me,
28:07
but they voted a way that seems cruel and, you know, mean and othering to people who find themselves, you know, disenf- more disenfranchised than I am.
28:25
I'm- Now what?... privileged to be a, you know- Yeah... 60, 62-year-old white guy- We were just talk-... who's- We were just talking about this too...
28:31
mostly college degree and all that- Before we started this podcast-... all that sort of stuff... that's- So somebody being nice to me- Yep... you know- Yeah...
28:39
so- somebody being nice to me, that's one thing, but, but othering, you know- I would just, uh- So, and, and then of course, you know-... smile and keep it at 60 to 90 seconds. All engagements, 60 to 90 seconds.
28:53
That's how I do it with a lot of people that I really can't- Right... handle, is like I keep everything to 60 to 90 seconds. It, once it gets to two minutes- I mean, you say you don't-...
29:02
uh, that's when crazy shit starts... you don't wanna be a, you don't wanna be a ten-second dick. It's like, "What?" It's like, "Oh, no, no. I, you know- "Fuck you. I'm out of here."...
29:08
I'll absorb whatever you're saying- Right, right, right... and we'll volley for, like, about 30, 40, 60 seconds. Okay, uh, now I have to go to the bathroom or have a smoke or- [laughs]... something or this or that.
29:19
But I, I don't even think any of these folks, I don't even think any of these folks are ever gonna bring up politics. No, I just do it for my own mental well-being. They, they generally don't. Well, that makes sense.
29:28
That's a good way not to get into arguments all the time. Oh. Mm-hmm. For sure. Yeah. Just keep that- Right... 90-seconder... certainly. But, but- Keeps all the hatred inside too...
29:37
I'm, because I, I, I tend to be kind of like, you know, v- very... I care, if I care a lot about something, it's hard for me to mentally separate- Sure... "Well, yeah, he's a nice guy." You're Polish.
29:52
"He just is also supports a bigot and a racist and a-" Understood. Yeah. It's- You know, I, but he's a nice guy. You can compartmentalize. You know, he's a nice guy but- You gotta compartmentalize. Yeah.
30:04
Compartmentalizing personality traits- I, yes-... versus voting record. Yeah. I don't know. I get it. I just- He, he's a nice guy that's highly misguided? It's just been a question lately. All right.
30:14
Let's get off this topic and- Yeah... except I think, I don't know. So, so- We're gonna heal the nation here. Yeah. So did- Well, part of it is why- So just-...
30:22
yeah, part of it is why start a, why start a, you know, why s- why start up a podcast again? You know, why- Mm-hmm... encourage people- No...
30:30
to do things- Because you can have, because you can have conversations like this- Just don't do my own thing... on it, Dave. That's exactly why you do it, 'cause you can- Yeah...
30:37
and you don't even have to stick with a specific, you know, subject. You could just... Dave's got a lot of stuff in his head. I think do- you doing a thing where you just kind of- I do [laughs]...
30:46
get some views out there. Maybe. [laughs] It's, it's Dave- And I-... Dave's fucking awesome podcast. I don't know. I could warn people ahead of time. Yeah.
30:52
There could, there could be a trigger warning at the- [laughs]... first 10 minutes of the show is,
30:58
I, I'm gonna talk about bike packing at, at minute 13, so just skip ahead if you don't wanna hear any of this other stuff. [laughs] There you go. [laughs] Well, that's how you can kind of lure them in. Yeah, for sure.
31:09
[laughs] I don't know. So, yeah. I know about- Maybe that's a good idea. Maybe that's a way to do it. Well, it's, you've got a platform- Yeah. Maybe that's the way to do it...
31:15
so you might as well, you might as well use it for your own, you know- Well, and I've been- Yeah... non- Machiavellian ways. I've been thinking about, since the rental's, since the- But I do...
31:23
rental's gonna be empty, of moving my podcast studio up there, so then I can do stuff. It's completely silent. I don't have to worry about, you know, uh, the dogs or Liz and, you know- [laughs]... and in the same house.
31:37
You worry about that a lot? I can run my podcasts up there. Yeah. Well, yeah. Oh, that was funny. When, 'cause, you know, Liz and the dogs are winding around and they make noise and- [laughs]...
31:46
you know, I mean- No, we don't have any dogs at this studio, I'll tell you that much. So, okay. I know you, I know you don't. [laughs] Well, but you're so- Yeah...
31:54
you're, you're i- that is an ideal situation around that, you know, ups- on upstairs in that, uh, rental. Right. Yeah. Uh, but you could also, there's gotta be people up there that wanna do content.
32:05
They could just pop over for a four-hour session and camera, camera, camera. Yeah, that's true too. Talky, talky, talky. Um- Well, I- Yeah...
32:13
I had been thinking about going back to my idea of like inter- you know, sort of dividing the show up into three, where like it starts with, you know, my little...
32:22
I don't know if you'd ever listen to like Marc Maron, but he always starts with his personal feelings about whatever's going on in his life or the world, and then he jumps into his, "Here's what I've been doing- Yeah.
32:32
He does... professionally. Here's where my next shows are gonna be." And then he goes into an interview with somebody.
32:37
And so I was thinking, well, I could kind of use the Marc Maron format where I talk about whatever I've been thinking about personally that's on my mind, and then go into- Could be butterflies...
32:47
a bike packing thing and then, and then interview some local, you know, bike person. All right. Jeff Bradley from the 7-Eleven team or- Yeah... Trudy from the pie shop or something like that, you know?
32:59
So here's an idea, 'cause I like your three phase idea. What if- I do too. Yes. Somehow you could integrate a common theme, like butterflies, through all three aspects. That's just fucking weird. Yeah.
33:11
Have some sort of- Well, I was just, I- I- Not butterflies... I'll, I'll tell you this- But you were saying- No, no... have, have a thread that ties everything together. I heard bake grease and maybe bread.
33:18
He went, he went with butterflies. You're- He's doing baking grease. [laughs] Yeah. No, you're focused on Trudy the pie lady. I am. Uh. 'Cause why wouldn't you be? She makes pies. Who doesn't like pies?
33:28
Well, Trudy, right, like she was, she was also the first female- I'm going the three prong attack I talked about... swan. Yeah. Yeah. No, I, I had it. Wait, I wanna hear about Trudy.
33:36
The first female swan in the pro peloton. Did you guys agree? Yes. All right. Trudy. Yeah. Tell us about Trudy. Trudy was also the first female...
33:43
Trudy was also, Trudy Rebstahn was also the first female pro swan year in the pro peloton in Europe. Nice. My back hurts just thinking about that. [laughs] And how awesome that would be. Well. All right.
33:57
[laughs] Uh, so- Yeah... yeah. Anything else, Dave? We're, you know- What are you drinking? Nope, but I just thought I'd let you know that the rental is, is open. Um, but it, they'll be out by the end of the month.
34:10
They'll be totally out, so- Excellent... it'll be, you know, ready for visits, um, as soon as we get snow and, you know, the fat, bring the fat bikes out and come on out. Yeah. Keep us posted- All right, Dave...
34:22
on weather reports every, you know, whate- when, when an a sig- significant event happens, let us know so we can kind of talk about it in real time, basically. There'll be- Okay... no snow. We control the weather now.
34:34
There'll be no snow. [laughs] We're in the biosphere. I don't know. There's pl- I forgot about, I totally forgot about that one. Right? [laughs] There's pl- there's plenty of sand up in Bayfield County.
34:44
I wouldn't worry too much about not needing a fat bike up there. Ah. Yeah, right. We can ride sand. [laughs] There we go. All right, Dave. All right, Dave. Thank you for calling. Okay, guys.
34:53
Hey, I'll talk to you probably- Oh, hey, I'll be down this weekend. This- I'll be down this weekend. Oh. Oh, cool. All right. But I- Give us a shout...
35:00
I'm help- my dad's doing surgery and I'm staying out kind of with him on the west side.
35:05
I'm not sure if I'll be around, but if I get some f- I'll probably go visit Frankie or something, so maybe I can meet you guys for a beer or something down in River West with, when I'm seeing Frankie. All right.
35:15
All right. Are you coming down for San- I'll let you know... are you coming down for the rampage? Santa Rampage. You know, I always like to. Um, I don't have that date locked down on my calendar- We started it...
35:26
but I certainly always like to. So- All right. So you gotta hear this. Yeah. Okay. [laughs] So you know, you know basically what it's doing, but JK found an alternative- Yeah... to doing the Santa Rampage- Yeah...
35:37
on a bike, basically, right? Yeah. Uh, the old, uh, um, Baby Boomers bar is now called, uh- Out on Lincoln. Yeah... Satchmo's and they're doing a Santa Rampage bus- Bus trip... tour. Bus tour. Can you believe it?
35:51
[laughs] Around the, like from 9:00, 9:00 AM to 2:00 and they're gonna hit like six of the stops. W- But you don't have to ride your bike 'cause r- it says- We're, we're lazy... on the thing.
36:01
Because yeah, you don't have to- Yeah. Because we're lazy. I mean, they're unapologetic about it. Uh, yeah. I mean, it's clever.
36:06
I mean, I'm o- I'm okay with, I'm okay with that, but are they like, are they like sort of like stealing in onto the Bike Fed's, uh- Yeah. Oh, yeah... thing or- It's, it's a Santa-...
36:17
is this an official- It's a Santa Rampage bike ride, see below, da-da-da, but we're lazy, so we got a bus. Yeah. Besides, who wants to ride a bike in the snow? No. You can be on a bus and with complimentary beverages.
36:31
We'll be going to the places where the riders stop, you know, da-da-da-da-da. But I do think they give- I mean, it's lazy... they give, they give some money to the Bike Fed out of this deal. Do they? I would think so.
36:41
I mean, well- Well, if they don't, we'll take Todd and smash his head against the sidewalk. Well, they, they're like, they're across the street. I really like that. They're across the street from Bike Fed. Yeah, true.
36:47
I'm sure Jake and Wheel and everybody is in Sopatico. They better have. Let's hope. All right, Dave, thanks for calling. But- Yeah. No... I thought it was clever. It was, I mean- What was the last clever thing?
36:58
That was one of the last clever things I've, I've seen about that place. Goodbye, Dave. Bye, Dave. Bye. Bye, Dave. He's going away now. Bye. [laughs] See ya. All right. Dave Schlabowski, everybody.
37:10
I don't know what happened with the technology. It didn't, uh, I didn't... I put, I, as soon as I saw it, I pushed it. Yeah. And I thought that's 'cause I texted him, but he was hanging with us for a while.
37:19
But he was nine minutes later. Oh my. Yeah, it's nine minutes. Nine, 10 minutes out of his way. It's almost fashionably late. I gotta figure out a way to tap that into the show so we can have camera on guest remotely.
37:30
Anyway, thank you for being here. I guess we'll do this again next week. Come again. Likely. Bye bye. Bye.
37:41
[outro music]
