Transcript
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Aesthetics Unscripted.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Kim, and I'm welcoming today a nutrition specialist, a dietary nutritionist who's been in the game for 30 plus years, longer actually, than longevity's been around.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Meriden Zerner, thank you so much for coming today.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: I am so happy to be here.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, longevity.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: It's a conversation.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Uh starter, it's a um worthy conversation and discussion.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: So you have been around, like I said, for longer than longevity actually was a thing.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So people were looking into wellness and health, obviously, since the beginning of time.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: And um please share your journey.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: How did you get here?
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Why did you get here?
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And what exactly is it that you do?
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: So, as a registered licensed dietitian, I've got a master's degree in nutritional science, and I share that because where you get your information from really matters.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: And as somebody who's kind of into the research and really wants to offer evidence-informed guidance, I was looking at one data piece that was, it was a TikTok study, and it was 60,000, 67,000 videos were assessed.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: 2.1% of those videos actually had accurate nutrition information.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: So listen, I love a good TikTok.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: I just don't want you to make big deal decisions about your hair, skin, and nails or your heart health, brain health, and gut health based on some of those recs.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Like, so just vet it.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: So where if somebody gets their information, you're worth taking that extra deep dive to get some solid, credible information.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: That's what I say all the time, too.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: It never ceases to amaze me how much someone will budget for a luxury handbag for up to a year or more, as an example.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And then they're looking for these quick fixes for their body, their and their skin.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And then they'll be like researching what car to buy for 17 months.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Like, where is this disconnect?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Please, please, your body is your biggest asset.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Without this, you're literally not here.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Your best and most important asset.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: And you know, I love a good visual.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: So when I think about the body, and I even think in the world of aesthetics, right?
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: So it's the leaves on the tree, and we want them to, you know, be green and vibrant and healthy.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: And the reason why they're green and vibrant and healthy is because the roots are well tended.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: So we need to care for the roots, uh, and that's really where well-being, health, and longevity begins.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And when we can care for the roots and work from the inside out, then you get the aesthetic.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I always say that beauty starts from within, uh, spiritually and physically.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: You cannot be beautiful and stay beautiful for the rest of your life.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: You cannot age well unless you're taking care of the inside first and foremost.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: It's interesting because this idea of longevity, which to me is care for your future self.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: What kinds of things can you do now that are going to help you now and energize you now and are good choices, but that really set you up down the road?
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: And a lot of that is rooted in the gut and it's rooted in brain health and heart health.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Of course, I'm aging, aren't we all?
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Rereading it and then appreciating how this interest in taking care of ourselves has really um flourished.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Now I also appreciate what you just mentioned, which is our wellness has to also be social, emotional.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: It has to be connection.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Um, so there's so many equally weighted, no pen intended as a dietitian, equally weighted pie slices, pie pieces, and opportunities that contribute to our wellness.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: We've seen people or we've heard of people, if we're lucky enough that it's not in our circle, that have actually been completely healthy but lost a partner that they were extremely close to and literally grieved themselves to death within months or up to a year.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Perfectly healthy person, but their mindset was just extreme grief, and their body followed that mindset.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: When you are under stress or duress, and it could be physical or emotional, or gosh forbid, both, your body gets the cue, your brain gives the cue.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Hey, something's up.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Are you being chased by a lion?
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: What's going on out there?
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: And you end up with blood uh sugar sort of flooding the bloodstream pretty regularly.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Well, that happens chronically, which can happen if there's inflammation or if there's a really challenging life stress, then we have um insulin resistance, and then we have prediabetes.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: So there can be a direct connect to this emotional stress response and blood sugar management and prediabetes.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: And blood sugar management is number one on the brain first care uh plan.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Well, let's talk about brain first because I know pre-session you and I had hit on that subject, and I was so intrigued.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: I was dying to ask you, oh, explain this whole thing to me.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, save it for the pod.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: So what is brain first?
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: I love an acronym and I love a cheat sheet and I love structure and scaffolding.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And actually, the behavior change science folks will say, yeah, to have some structure around this, to piggyback some habit changes, um, that works typically very well for people trying to make health change, make any change, really.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Brain, B-R-A-I-N, and then first, F-I-R-S-T, each one kind of stands for a contributor, and B is the um blood sugar management.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: R is kind of the real food, the A is activity, the I is inflammation management, the N is neural stimulation.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: So go a different way home today, play a new game, play a new instrument.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Like all of these things that we know come together to create a well human.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: If you're caring for your brain, you're caring for your heart.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: If you're caring for your brain, you're caring for your gut.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: And all of this is an integrated circuit that sets you up for this longevity that we're all talking about.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's fantastic.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And what uh what an accolade to be invited by the Laura Bush Foundation to be able to um put together a presentation for them.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: So kudos to you.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: It's fantastic, and thank you for coming up with Brain First because it makes absolute sense.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: But I definitely don't think there's enough exposure for the viewer that you could be in a great mood and not understand why you're having maybe some yo-yo emotions, and it could actually be food-driven.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, and I'm smiling because I'm a sugar girl too.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: My my sister loves like the salty, crunchy, and savory.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, yeah, I just don't really understand.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Like, I I'll I will support any client in that, but I'm like, if you're a sugar girl, I've so got you.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: The um food and mood um is significant.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: And when I say significant, I don't mean in place of if somebody needs a therapist or if they need a medication, and it, but it's more about if we put in some of these other lifestyle changes working from the inside out, would you need less medication, which might mean fewer side effects?
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Would it mean, again, even a slightly more elevated mood or mood management?
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: You know, these two percents and five percent, you get a 30% reduction in depressive uh symptoms, according to the SMILES trial, which use the Mediterranean diet as a one intervention as it related to mood, 30% reduction in depression symptoms.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: So the food and mood connection really can begin with the higher fiber foods.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: So if you can appreciate that 97% of your serotonin neurotransmitters, these are your feel-good hormones, um, are rooted in your gut, and that these little microbes, these little healthy, uh, fierce and fabulous bacteria are in there defending your immune system, but also influencing your mood, if we feed these good guys fiber, they will thrive.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: And that in turn positively influences those seroternin neurotransmitters.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: What a win! And it's so fascinating to me because as you know, um maybe not so much in other countries, but here in the US, the gut microbiome, these are like that's a new buzz thing, right?
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: We've really only been talking about it on a national basis for what, about the past two years, uh, mainly through social media.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: And now we're finding out that your little buddies down there in the gut are actually driving a lot of this because we're not feeding them and nurturing them properly.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of communication uh gut to brain.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: And I would love to pause for a moment on what you said, because so many of my um female clients, particularly women in midlife, have been telling themselves a story that it's a personal failing, that it's about willpower, and they just don't have it.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And this is not about willpower.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: I have an entire chapter in my new Thoughtful 30 book about dialing back sugar and really putting this willpower concept to rest.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: This is chemistry, this is biology, and then hormones, it gets more challenging as we get older.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: You may have heard friends say, I am eating the same thing, I feel like I'm doing the same thing, and yet I have more cravings, I'm putting on weight.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot in there that they're taking sort of somehow personal responsibility for.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: No, this is biology and chemistry, microbiology.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Like, let's get to that foundation.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Yes, please.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And I'm smiling um towards your second half of saying that because I'm like, girl, I am the one that was saying just last year, like to one of my staff members, you know, if I was eating the way I am now, which is like clean and for the most part, clean and balanced and really, you know, like organic and paying attention to added sugars and that whole nine yards, not too much salt, blah, blah, blah, right?
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Hydration, I would be two panth sizes smaller.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: But since I'm post-menopause, I'm like, man, nothing just comes off anymore.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: What happened to the metabolism?
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Who is this?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Whose body is this?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: In a way, the body is kind of trying to protect us.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't particularly appreciate it when I'm trying to pull on my genes, but it's trying to store fat or weight around the midline because at least it's organ protective, right?
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: But we're so much less efficient because of either the lack of hormones or the hormone roller coaster, which affects sleep, which affects brain fog, which affects bone density, which affects heart health.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: These are all viewed as stressors to the body.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: And again, go back to are we running from the lion?
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: That's the cue the body's getting.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, we should slow things down and then store a little body fat and wait for this storm to pass.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Well, it's gonna be a long storm.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Especially for women, and we've been ignored with these subjects for for you know decades about perimenopause and um menopause and postmenopause, and and you know, it's it's beyond time that we all start joining hands together, as you said, from the nutrition to the mental wellness to the physical wellness to the social wellness.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: And let's embrace ourselves and start having a kind conversation with ourselves.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: It's not technically always our fault, but you're like, sure, we could try to sleep better, drink more, eat better, but stop beating ourselves up about it and continue that never-ending cortisol release, right?
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Running, as you said, running from the lion, and give our bodies a chance to heal, repair, and regenerate.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: The woman who gives everybody else grace absolutely deserves to extend that same grace to herself.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Be like, yeah, this is a little harder.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Let's try some stuff on, let's keep coming at it.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: That was actually my why for developing this thoughtful 30, 30-day reset, particularly for women.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: That was my inspiration.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Excellent.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: I was going to ask you about that.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: So I know it's a program, but you said you also have it in book form.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, I wrote, I ended up writing it up.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: I created 10 power pillars, these elements that have the most impact, things that you're gonna expect, right?
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Adequate protein, um, adequate fiber.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: There's a 30 theme throughout 30 grams of protein, 30 grams of fiber to shoot for, 30 minutes of movement, a 30-second gratitude practice to address a lot of these other pieces that really come together where the body's like, oh, we're not running from the lion.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: We can stop and we can hang out for a little bit, and then we'll be a little bit more efficient.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: We get the rest and digest that is the parasympathetic nervous system piece.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: So that's the thoughtful 30.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Is that on digital and hard copy, or how do how do we get our hands on that?
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: It will be both.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: It is probably out for pre-order and in hand in the next month or so.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: So it'll be on Amazon and on my website.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: And I want everybody to know I've got a lot of really cool, free, easy um, in essence, cheat sheets.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: The brain first download is there.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: You can get a little bit of a thoughtful 30s starter there.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: It's not a time in your life when you want to sit down to a whole book or an audio version.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Like it you can at least get started with some of the bullet points.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: So, all of that, a lot of that and the and the blogs, those are all um free opportunities on the website.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Can you please explain the difference for our viewers where, like, if you're going hardcore, no carbs, all protein, high protein, and you're constant, and this is like a lifestyle that you're thinking you're doing forever.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, I've seen a lot of research about how harmful that is in the long run for you.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: So can you please talk about that for a little bit, please?
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, part of my role has always been to look through the next lens and the next lens for people, which is yeah, we can look at um weight management like this, but then we also need to open up and look at a broader perspective of, you know, cancer risk.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And I like higher protein, but really I like tailored protein.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: So I want to do your math.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: And I want to look at, you know, if you sat down to a hundred gram of protein meal right now as a petite female, you may only synthesize 25, 30 grams of it.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: There's always some fluctuation in there, everyone's a little different, but you know, it's not gonna hurt you to eat a little bit more, but you're just not getting full credit.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Now, if you were able to divide that 100 grams up during your day, and again, I'd rather do your unique math because a six-foot basketball player is going to need less than a five-two ice skater.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: So again, unique individuals and goals.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: And then looking at, all right, now how do we divide up the protein, but also mark some of those other boxes where we get the fiber as well, that we have enough carbohydrate for muscle and brain function.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: You can run on ketones, the brain can.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: It doesn't love it, but it can do it, but the muscles really cannot.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: So there's an inefficiency and probably um a high likelihood of missing out on certain nutrients that are cancer protective, that are anti-inflammatory if we're cutting out all of the carb.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: So it's it really is um a gentle nudge to tailor it to you.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: We've got great equations, I've got you know great equipment.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Um, we can do a resting metabolism test, solid science.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And then how do we want to translate it into your life?
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Where are you on your feet all day?
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Do you have to eat dinner late at night?
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Like how do we draft that for you?
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: And I love, Meredithin, that you have addressed all of the easier, quicker, and sometimes more budget-friendly ways for people to be able to start their longevity journey and then maintain it.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: But I also commend you, because I know you're wildly busy, um, to be able to still give of yourself and you're still passionate about that one-on-one connection.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: People have been so generous with their time and expertise with me personally and with our journey, um, as I mentioned, with some family members who were struggling.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: And so I never take that for granted.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, if as far as establishing or taking a pretty good shot at what I think my purpose is here on this earth, certainly it's to love and be loved and to show up in a way that serves others, but this is maybe a way that I get to give back a little bit.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: And I am so excited about next steps as it relates to research and so hopeful that women will get their due and that they will value themselves.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, every time you choose rest, nourishment, and movement, you're telling yourself I matter here.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: And and you, and and we do, and we are holding a lot together.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Don't know a woman from any walk of life that's not.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Um, speaking of women, let's do some like more rapid fire.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: I know, again, we're I'm just saying no cookie cutter, you're saying no cookie cutter, but there are some generalizations for a starting point that we can take into consideration.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: At least um, that's from my own personal experience throughout the years.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: So if someone is just entering perimenopause and starting to get like this weird weight gain, even though their diet hasn't changed and they're physically active and they're they're pretty fit to begin with, what's the first thing you would say that they could take a look at themselves?
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: I want to know your numbers.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: I want to know where you're beginning to know where we might want to go, or to know where you're beginning to know what we need to hold on to.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: So I want to know um lab work, I want to have a more detailed thyroid panel, things that could get in the way.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: I want to know hormones, I want to know a little bit maybe about if you if we have access to it, like your mom's history, like what did that look like for her?
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I want to know muscle mass and body fat percentage.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: I don't really need to know the scale.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna tell me enough about you because I want to help you hang on to muscle mass.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: It is your metabolic engine, and it's the key to longevity in terms of just getting up and doing the thing and traveling and when you gosh willing do get to do retirement that you're gonna be out there crushing it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot I want to know in terms of baseline, because I promise you there's a lot of things you're doing well.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Check, check, check.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Let's hold on to those, and it's gonna take some action items in there to maintain your cholesterol, uh, to maintain your muscle mass.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: But sometimes we discover some things where we can move forward and improve, and that's an area we're gonna focus on.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: So we start with knowing your numbers.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: If you can get outside and get a brief connection with nature, that's an easy one to do.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Five minutes, ten minutes, just get outside sometimes or inside so much.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: It actually affects circadian rhythm, which affects hormones, cortisol, and melatonin.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: So it's not just like, oh, catch a breeze.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: There's actually chemistry happening when you can do that.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Tough in New York in the winter, and probably tough in Canada in the winter, but do the best you can.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: Um, I always say, you know, like it makes you feel alive when you step out into that cold weather.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: My family's up in Maine and Massachusetts.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, there were some really crisp days and definitely some months when I think you kind of forget what the sun even looks like and feels like.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: So again, you do the best you can.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, without a doubt.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: And it also sounds like those are good starting points for women that are already in menopause or they're postmenopausal and still experiencing, you know, I find that post-menopausal is interesting because um, you know, like maybe your gynecologist is telling you that all your hormones are tanked, you basically have none.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: But then you're you still have maybe a random week where you had hot flashes, or a random week where you were sweaty, or a random week where you were very bloated and it wasn't a dietary change.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: So So again, like you said, we need to have a kinder conversation with us and uh with ourselves, and then it touch base and and circle back to this constant um checkpoint with someone such as yourself to be able to decipher what's going on and deal with it.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: And and to advocate for yourself.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: And I I I hope people uh I think people know that, but just a general reminder to do that if you're feeling something that's off, or if you have questions, right?
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: So it's like, hey, theoretically I'm in menopause, why am I having a little bit of this hot flash?
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Well, fat cells actually secrete a little bit of estrogen, right?
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: So um there's other relationships that we would want to appreciate.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: I did not know this, I should have known this, but my own doctor, um, in doing a little check-in, said, Hey, you know, your LDL went up a little.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: I am Miss, I am Miss Fiber, I'm Mrs.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Fiber, whatever.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: And she's like, Meriden, that's menopause.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: That's the power of hormones, among other things, and it's gonna affect your bone density.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I can lift a truck.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: She's like, Yeah, but also menopause.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Your bone density is decreasing.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: What do you want to do about it?
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: So I think um knowledge empowerment is where we begin.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: We build on some of your strengths and we look if there's any sort of gaps we can fill where you think, okay, I'm gonna get some return and investment if I um better divide my protein, if I cut back on cocktails because it affects your sleep.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: No judgment.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: But it does.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: If I need to drop in a few supportive supplements uh to fill in some gaps, just to kind of address some of these areas that can get, you know, really out of sync and out of whack and influence brain fog and heart health.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's kind of a big deal.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, without a doubt.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: I feel like I could easily talk to you all day long.
