Lucas: Sure. ድመቷ — the cat. በሳጥን — in the box. ውስጥ — inside. ነች — is. So ድመቷ በሳጥን ውስጥ ነች. Luna: ድመቷ በሳጥን ውስጥ ነች. The cat is inside the box. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's try ላይ. If the book is on the table: መጽሐፉ በጠረጴዛ ላይ ነው. Luna: መጽሐፉ — the book. በጠረጴዛ — on the table. ላይ — on top. ነው — is. Lucas: You're a natural. So መጽሐፉ በጠረጴዛ ላይ ነው. Luna: መጽሐፉ በጠረጴዛ ላይ ነው. The book is on the table. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice a little scene. Imagine a cat and a box. Luna: I love cats. Lucas: So the cat is inside the box: ድመቷ በሳጥን ውስጥ ነች. Can you say that? Luna: ድመቷ በሳጥን ውስጥ ነች. Lucas: Good. Now if the cat is on the box: ድመቷ በሳጥን ላይ ነች. Luna: ድመቷ በሳጥን ላይ ነች. The cat is on the box. Lucas: You got it. Let's try a different object. Coffee cup on the table. The coffee is in the cup. Luna: Wait, use ውስጥ for the cup? Lucas: Exactly. ቡናው በጽዋ ውስጥ ነው — The coffee is inside the cup. Luna: ቡናው በጽዋ ውስጥ ነው. Lucas: And the cup is on the table: ጽዋው በጠረጴዛ ላይ ነው. Luna: ጽዋው በጠረጴዛ ላይ ነው. The cup is on the table. Lucas: Nice. Let's do a quick drill. I'll say 'the cat is inside the box'. You say it in Amharic. Luna: Okay. ድመቷ በሳጥን ውስጥ ነች. Lucas: And 'the book is on the table'? Luna: መጽሐፉ በጠረጴዛ ላይ ነው. Lucas: You're doing great. Now, a real-life example: I'm at a cafe. I say 'the sugar is on the table'.
