- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I'm going to
- 0:01be your host, Tracie, and we are finishing up
- 0:04this series, The God Who Meets Us in the Dark,
- 0:08one of the final episodes. And we're going to
- 0:10be talking about the cross, Holy Sunday, and
- 0:14what we can do on the other side of the dark.
- 0:19And so, if you're new to Fostering Faith, we
- 0:21do not have it all figured out, but we are fostering
- 0:23our faith together because we are better together.
- 0:25And if you're a return listener, welcome back
- 0:27home. We are glad that you tuned in today. And
- 0:30we're going to be talking about the God who meets
- 0:32us in the dark. There are some stories we love
- 0:34telling after we have reached the other side.
- 0:37We can look back and say, now I understand why
- 0:39God closed that door, or now I can see what God
- 0:42was doing. And those are beautiful stories, but
- 0:44not every story has reached that point. Some
- 0:47stories are still unfinished. Some prayers still
- 0:51feel unanswered. Some relationships remain broken.
- 0:54Some diagnoses have not changed. Some losses
- 0:57cannot be reversed. And some situations are still
- 1:01dark and cannot see what God is doing. And that
- 1:03is the kind of darkness that we're going to be
- 1:05talking about today. Not the darkness that we
- 1:07can explain after everything works out, but the
- 1:10darkness we are still trying to walk through.
- 1:13And so let us pray as we open up. Dear Heavenly
- 1:15Father, thank you so much for today. Thank you
- 1:17so much for these listeners. Thank you so much
- 1:19for eyes to see and ears to hear. Thank you that
- 1:22we have the gospel. Thank you that we are servants
- 1:24of the living God. Thank you that you are going
- 1:27to use pain for purpose. Thank you that we know
- 1:30that you are good. Thank you that we know that
- 1:31you are just. Thank you that we know that we
- 1:34are serving a mighty God. Thank you that we know
- 1:36that if you brought us to it, that you will bring
- 1:38us through it. Thank you for all that you do.
- 1:40In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen and amen. And so
- 1:44one of the main truths is that God does not always
- 1:47remove the darkness immediately, but his promise
- 1:50is to meet us in it. And so Psalm 139, 11 through
- 1:5312. tells us that even darkness is not dark to
- 1:57God. And we may not be able to see everything
- 2:00clearly, but God has not lost sight of us. Darkness
- 2:04can limit what we see, but it never limits what
- 2:08God sees. And so as we go into the real darkness,
- 2:13sometimes we feel so afraid of sounding unfaithful
- 2:16that we want to refuse to admit something hurt.
- 2:19We tell ourselves that I should be stronger,
- 2:22that I should pray harder, we should have more
- 2:25faith, we should stop crying and move on. But
- 2:28Scripture does not ask us to pretend. David wrote
- 2:31about fear and grief and loneliness and feeling
- 2:34forgotten. Job asked questions that he couldn't
- 2:38answer, and Aback had cried out over injustice.
- 2:41Jeremiah wept. Even Jesus cried at Lazarus' tomb.
- 2:45Faith is not denying that darkness exists. Faith
- 2:48is continuing to turn towards God while we are
- 2:51standing in it. In Psalm 23, 4 says, David does
- 3:01not say there is no valley. He does not pretend
- 3:04it is easy. His competence comes from knowing
- 3:07that he is not walking through it alone. And
- 3:12that is the promise. We would often prefer God
- 3:16to lead us around the valley, But sometimes he
- 3:20walks us through it. And whenever we talk about
- 3:23the darkness, and so it's about the diagnosis
- 3:25that we know that he could fix, we know that
- 3:27he can cure all disease. And so we've mentioned
- 3:32here on Fostering Faith several times that we've
- 3:35had parents that are ill. My husband quit his
- 3:38job to take care of his mom who has MS, who's
- 3:40in a wheelchair. And so we know that we serve
- 3:42a God that could fix the MS, that could get up
- 3:45and he could just walk. one day just walk, just
- 3:49get up and walk. And we are walking through the
- 3:54darkness of unhealing. And so we don't know what
- 3:59his promises are. We know what his promises are.
- 4:03We don't know his plan. And so we've often said,
- 4:07we've been praying for 20 years, but yet she's
- 4:09still in a wheelchair, yet she still cannot do
- 4:12things on her own. And so it's not the fact that
- 4:14we are just like out here doing a podcast because
- 4:17like, oh, just it's like rainbows and cupcakes.
- 4:20Absolutely not. Like we've and Derek's dad passed
- 4:23away of brain cancer. And so, you know, we have,
- 4:28we have sick parents and, you know, luckily my
- 4:30parents are both still alive. My dad has had
- 4:32health issues my whole life. My mom is in good
- 4:37health per se, but she, you know, hasn't, she's
- 4:39limited on walking. And so in that same instance,
- 4:43we walk through disease, we walk through diagnoses,
- 4:47we walk through loved ones passing away. And
- 4:51it's in that darkness that we know that we could
- 4:53heal them. You healed Lazarus, and so why couldn't
- 4:57you heal them? And so it's not about, we know
- 5:00that we serve a God that is just and that is
- 5:02kind, and that He is meeting us in our valleys.
- 5:05He's teaching us, He's molding us. And so because
- 5:09of this, my spring semester classes just came
- 5:13available. And so my husband and I were talking
- 5:16on the way to Gia's volleyball game about like
- 5:19pain and suffering. And so there's actually a
- 5:21class that I can take about pain and suffering
- 5:23in the church. And so I'm going to walk through
- 5:26that. I'm going to walk through that class this
- 5:28next semester. And so I'm hopefully going to
- 5:32gain insight, but I know that God can use pain
- 5:34for purpose and the valleys are where we typically
- 5:38get a better relationship with Him that we draw
- 5:41closer to Him and a lot of people don't use those
- 5:44valleys. They turn and leave because I prayed
- 5:48and you didn't answer. I know that you could
- 5:50heal but you didn't and they walk away. And so
- 5:52there is a choice in this matter. There is a
- 5:54choice that whenever we're in the valleys, we
- 5:56can get mad and walk away. But know that your
- 5:58God, that your Father is standing right by you
- 6:01and that He is never going to leave nor forsake
- 6:04you. And so as we are in valley seasons, as we
- 6:07are in the darkness, It's about, you know what?
- 6:11I just want to sit here with you. I'm going to
- 6:13cry. I'm going to weep. I'm going to be so mad.
- 6:16But you know what? Our God can handle it. Your
- 6:18father, your Abba, can handle. Our cries are,
- 6:21He knows that we have frustrations. He went through
- 6:23everything that we are going through. And so
- 6:26Jesus understands the darkness. We do not pray
- 6:29to a savior who watched suffering from a safe
- 6:31distance. Jesus experienced betrayal, rejection,
- 6:34physical pain, humiliation, grief, injustice,
- 6:37and death. On the cross, Darkness covered the
- 6:40land and Jesus cried, my God, my God, why have
- 6:44you forsaken me? Jesus entered the deepest human
- 6:47suffering. He knows what it feels like to cry
- 6:50out in the dark. That means whenever you come
- 6:53to God with your pain, you're not talking to
- 6:55someone who doesn't understand. You are coming
- 6:59to Jesus, the one who was betrayed by his friend,
- 7:03rejected by his own people, falsely accused,
- 7:06beaten, mocked, and then crucified. Your tears
- 7:10do not frighten him, your questions do not offend
- 7:12him, and your grief does not make you a bad Christian.
- 7:17Please hear that. Because you are in grief, because
- 7:22you are sadness, that means that you are a human,
- 7:26and God loves that. He knows all of these things
- 7:28that are going to happen. And so Psalm 34 18
- 7:31says, the Lord is near to the brokenhearted.
- 7:35He does not say that he is disgusted with the
- 7:38brokenhearted. He does not say that he is disappointed
- 7:40because there is still struggling. He says that
- 7:44he is near. And you may not feel him, but feeling
- 7:47are not always reliable evidence of God's presence.
- 7:51And we've talked about that before. God can be
- 7:55close even when he feels far away. And the silence
- 7:59of Saturday, and we talked a lot about that on
- 8:01Good Friday and the Resurrection Sunday, but
- 8:03there's also Dark Saturday. Jesus had died. His
- 8:08body was in the tomb. And then what? Nothing.
- 8:16The disciples didn't understand. What was happening?
- 8:19The teacher was gone. Their expectations shattered.
- 8:22Their future seemed uncertain. And we know Sunday
- 8:25is coming, but they did not. They had to live
- 8:29through and walk through Saturday. And many of
- 8:33us experience Saturday season. Some things hasn't
- 8:36ended, but we cannot see what comes next. We
- 8:39have experienced a loss. but not the restoration.
- 8:42We have prayed, but the answer has not come.
- 8:45And we know the promises of God, but our occurred
- 8:48circumstances do not seem to match them. Saturday
- 8:52looked silent, but God was not finished. Saturday
- 8:56looked final, but was not the end of the story.
- 9:00And we have to be careful here. This does not
- 9:02mean every difficult situation will turn around
- 9:04exactly as we want it. It does not mean that
- 9:07every illness will be healed in this life. every
- 9:10relationship will not be restored, and every
- 9:12closed door will eventually open. Christian hope
- 9:16is deeper than believing everything will happen
- 9:19according to our plan. Our hope is that Jesus
- 9:23rose from the grave, suffering sin and death
- 9:26will not have the final word. And as we've mentioned
- 9:30here, we have prayed for healing, and those people
- 9:34are with Jesus now. And my aunt said it so beautifully
- 9:37as she was passing away from cancer. She was
- 9:41like, you know what? Either Jesus heals me here
- 9:43or I will be with him in heaven. And so we are
- 9:46promised to be healed. He doesn't say that we're
- 9:48going to be healed here on earth, but we will
- 9:49be healed when we go to heaven. And so that's
- 9:53why it's just so important to know the people
- 9:56that are in your life and just pray for pray
- 10:01for them, pray for situations to where you can
- 10:04talk about Christ, praying that God softens their
- 10:06hearts, that their eyes can see, just that spiritual
- 10:13awakening per se. And so we always talk to the
- 10:16kids about being fishers of men and not watchers
- 10:19of the aquarium. And so it's about reaching the
- 10:22loss. It's about reaching those family members
- 10:23and the friends and people in our community that
- 10:26don't know Christ and how to walk with them through
- 10:29those struggles and those pains. Because if your
- 10:32God is so good, then why am I going through this?
- 10:33Because we live in a fallen, broken world. And
- 10:36we are never going to have every answer to every
- 10:39question that they have, but you know, it's about
- 10:41walking through their unbelief. And with your
- 10:45faith and God and the Holy Spirit to direct us,
- 10:48I mean, we really can't lose. And so Jesus weeps
- 10:52with us. And so John 11, Mary and Martha send
- 10:54word to Jesus that his brother Lazarus is sick.
- 10:57Jesus loves this family, but he does not arrive
- 11:00before Lazarus dies. When Jesus finally comes,
- 11:04both sisters say this painful thing, Lord, if
- 11:08you would have been here, my brother would have
- 11:10not died. Can you imagine knowing the guy that
- 11:14could heal and he was delayed because he wanted
- 11:18days in between time? In the honest statement,
- 11:22they believe that Jesus had the power to help
- 11:24them. They could not understand why he did not
- 11:27come sooner. Maybe you have prayed for something
- 11:29similar. God, if you would have stepped in, this
- 11:32wouldn't have happened. If you would have answered,
- 11:35my family would not be hurting. If you would
- 11:37have healed them, I would not be grieving. If
- 11:40you would have opened that door, I would not
- 11:42feel so lost. And Jesus does not shame Mary and
- 11:46Martha for that grief. He does not lecture them
- 11:49for asking questions. What does Jesus do? He
- 11:53weeps. He knows. that he's about to call Lazarus
- 11:58out of the tomb, yet he still enters their grief.
- 12:02That tells me that tears are not wasted simply
- 12:05because resurrection is true. Jesus has not rushed
- 12:09past the sorrow just because he knows the end
- 12:11of the story. Sometimes God gives us his presence
- 12:14before he gives us his explanations. And sometimes
- 12:18the answers we need at the moment is not that
- 12:21here is what happened. Sometimes it's a simple
- 12:26I'm here, and I'm weeping with you. And let someone
- 12:31else carry that hope for you. When God feels
- 12:34silent, isolation can make the darkness feel
- 12:36even louder. We stop answering messages. We withdraw
- 12:41from people. We convince ourselves that nobody
- 12:43understands what we are carrying alone, everything
- 12:47alone. But sometimes God meets us through other
- 12:50people. He meets us through a friend who sends
- 12:53a message at the right time. He meets us through
- 12:55someone bringing dinner whenever we didn't have
- 12:57the strength to cook. And it's so great because
- 13:00we were, I was talking to a person in clinic
- 13:04and we had talked about small groups and wasn't
- 13:07a part of this church, but she just needed community.
- 13:09I said, you know what? My church is getting ready
- 13:10to start small group season. Just show up, sign
- 13:13up for a small group that you feel like would
- 13:15be with you. And so if you guys are a part of
- 13:18a local church and your small group season start,
- 13:21invite people that don't come to your church.
- 13:22because it's about reaching those people that
- 13:25need it. And she was going through a hard time.
- 13:29And those ladies at that small group showed up
- 13:31at her door. They showed up in her depression.
- 13:33They showed up whatever she couldn't cook. And
- 13:36she just could not believe that people were out
- 13:39there in the community to love her. It wasn't
- 13:41that she belonged to this church, but it was
- 13:43about just being a part of a community. It was
- 13:45about being part of a small group. And so whenever
- 13:49he sends people in our life to love us, In our
- 13:52dark, He meets us through pastors, counselors,
- 13:56physicians, family members, trusted people, people
- 13:58to sit with us without trying to fix everything.
- 14:01Not everybody that has a problem needs you to
- 14:04fix them. In Mark 2, four friends carry a paralyzed
- 14:07man to Jesus. When they could not get through
- 14:09the crowd, they opened the roof to lower him
- 14:12down. The man is physically carried by faith
- 14:15in the effort of his friends. And there are seasons
- 14:17whenever we do not feel strong enough to carry
- 14:19our own hope. Let someone else help you carry
- 14:22it. You don't even need to give them a pause
- 14:25explanation. You can simply say, you don't need,
- 14:30I do not need to fix this. I need someone to
- 14:33just know that I'm struggling. And if you're
- 14:36supporting someone through darkness, resist their
- 14:39urge to explain everything. You don't have to
- 14:42give them a reason for their suffering. You don't
- 14:44have to find the perfect verse to say something
- 14:47profound, something Sometimes the most Christ
- 14:50-like thing you can do is just stay. Send the
- 14:54message. Remember the difficult anniversary.
- 14:57Bring a meal. Set in silence. Presence is in
- 15:03ministry. So what do you do in the dark? When
- 15:07you cannot see the entire path, focus on the
- 15:10next faithful step. In Micah 7 -8, it says, You
- 15:20may not receive enough light to see the next
- 15:23five years. You may only see and receive light
- 15:26for today. So ask yourself these three questions.
- 15:30First, what am I grieving? And name it honestly.
- 15:34Don't minimize it or make it sound more spiritual
- 15:37than what it is. But what am I grieving? Two,
- 15:43what do I know? Facts. What are the facts? Not
- 15:47what you're assuming, not what you're doubting.
- 15:49But what do I know? What do the life, death,
- 15:55and resurrection of Jesus reveal about God? I
- 15:59know God sees me. I know Jesus understands suffering.
- 16:04I know God is nearer to the brokenhearted. And
- 16:07I know the darkness is not greater than the light.
- 16:10I know resurrection means death does not have
- 16:13the final word. These are truths. And so we pause.
- 16:19We reflect. And we know what the truth says.
- 16:24And so third, what do I need to entrust to God?
- 16:28Complete the sentence. God, I place into your
- 16:31hands whatever you're dealing with, the grief,
- 16:35the loss, the sorrow, the anger, the confusion,
- 16:38because we serve God of order and not of confusion.
- 16:41Maybe as a person, a diagnosis, a relationship,
- 16:44a timeline, an outcome, or an explanation that
- 16:47you desperately want. And trusting someone to
- 16:50God does not mean you stop caring. It means that
- 16:54you acknowledge that you cannot control it. Please
- 16:59hear me. Stop trying to control everything. Quit
- 17:04trying to produce your end of your story. We
- 17:08want God's will. We do not want our will. We
- 17:11want His best and not our best. We want His future
- 17:15for ourselves, not our future. We are so small
- 17:17-minded. and we serve such a mighty God that
- 17:21is so good to us. And I think that we lose fact
- 17:27because we think that we know better. We think
- 17:29that we have it all just kind of mapped out,
- 17:32and this way is so much better than what He wants.
- 17:34And it's not. There's no way that we could fathom
- 17:38the goodness of God. John 1 .5 says, the light
- 17:43shined in the darkness, and the darkness does
- 17:47not grasp it. The darkness is real, but it is
- 17:52not stronger than Jesus. We may be walking through
- 17:54a dark season, but you are not walking through
- 17:57it alone. The same Jesus who wept with Lazarus'
- 18:00tombs suffered on the cross, entered the grave,
- 18:03and walked out of the tomb with you. You do not
- 18:07have to pretend that the darkness has not hurt.
- 18:09You do not have to understand everything that
- 18:11God is doing. You do not have to force yourself
- 18:13to feel hopeless every moment. You can grieve
- 18:17and still have faith. You can cry and still trust
- 18:20God. You can have questions and still turn towards
- 18:23Jesus. The darkness may be part of your story,
- 18:27but because of Jesus, it will never have the
- 18:29final say. And so let's pray. Jesus, thank you
- 18:33so much for being there in our grief. Thank you
- 18:37that you entered suffering and death and darkness
- 18:39in the tomb. Thank you that there is no place
- 18:42that we can go where you cannot reach us. Bring
- 18:46you an unfinished story, our unanswered questions,
- 18:49and our prayers that we have not received answers
- 18:51that we wanted. Meet us here. Help us stop treating
- 18:54grief as a failure of faith. Give us safe people
- 18:58who we can sit next to us and pray with us and
- 19:01help us carry whenever we feel weak. We cannot
- 19:04trace your hand. Help us trace our heart. Whenever
- 19:08we cannot see the whole path, give us enough
- 19:10light for the next faithful step. Remind us that
- 19:13the darkness is not dark. to you and that you
- 19:16are near to the brokenhearted and that the light
- 19:18shines so bright and that every tear you will
- 19:22wipe away. Thank you for all that you do. In
- 19:25Jesus' name I pray. Amen and amen. I want to
- 19:28thank you guys for spending time with me. I know
- 19:30that there's so many podcasts out there, but
- 19:32you guys chose to spend almost 20 minutes with
- 19:34me. And if you're someone walking through dark
- 19:38difficulties and share this episode with somebody,
- 19:40remind them that they need other people and that
- 19:44we don't have all the answers and that we can
- 19:46walk through this darkness together. God may
- 19:49feel silent, but you are not unseen. The darkness
- 19:52is still not the end of your story. Until next
- 19:55time, keep fostering your faith and we love you
- 19:58guys. Have a great day.
