- 0:00Hi and welcome to the Curve Weekly. The podcast that keeps you up to date with all the money,
- 0:06business and stock market tea. Everyone should experience for us at least once in their lives
- 0:10and Annie shouldn't miss out just because she can't afford it. Help me, I'm poor.
- 0:15Third time lucky. Third time lucky. So how did you take the course this morning?
- 0:22I don't know why we started these records at 8.30 and it's like I feel like every record
- 0:28we should put in the calendar for half an hour before it's honestly we have so many
- 0:32technicals. Oh gosh. The joys of a starter. And also recording remotely. My mum was like yesterday
- 0:41because I'm done in Aratown have been sitting here for the weekend which has been so nice and
- 0:44she was like oh can't you just record in a cafe on the way to the airport and I was like oh mom
- 0:49you don't get us she was like no no I was like no I can't sorry like there's just too much
- 0:52gear she was like oh but but what if you just get like a quiet corner and I was like no mum like
- 0:57we've got three tripods here up we've got our phone we've got the computer we've got all sorts of
- 1:02shit it's just like it's not happening in a cafe yeah it's not happening anyway how was your weekend?
- 1:08Good yeah didn't spend a lot of time with my mum for Mother's Day unfortunately. Bad daughter.
- 1:14No but when we were really cool romantic spots yes actually those she went on a romantic
- 1:26weekend away quite cute. I'm hardly romantic you're wearing thermals and beanies but yeah no it was
- 1:33very it was so beautiful it was actually amazing to be in nature we arrived at this cabin so it's
- 1:41at Raglan which is kind of like southwest of Auckland and on the west coast and they say don't
- 1:46arrive after dark and unfortunately the traffic getting out of Auckland was horrific and so we arrived
- 1:51after dark and it was like the blind letting the blind honestly it's this way no it's this way
- 2:00and I was in the most inappropriate attire like I'd left straight from work so I was in like
- 2:06white jeans slides in the bush in the dark trying to navigate oh it was quite hilarious but
- 2:13so you arrived trying to look romantic and then the rest of the weekend was like
- 2:16being in the park yes yes no it was yeah it looked beautiful is it that unyoke one of those
- 2:27unyoke spots yes yeah they've got them all around the world I think yeah and it was
- 2:32they've got them in London yeah I think or in the UK they're in Australia and so nice to get off
- 2:38the grid so everything is solar powered gas that we cooked over an open fire you know all that kind
- 2:43of stuff was really did you feel how do you comforts on no I loved it I'm just like imagining you
- 2:51can we just order a sabit I mean we did pop into Raglan I was like should we go for a drink
- 2:57we're just driving to town and go for a wine go have a margarita but no it was it was really
- 3:03relaxing the sun rises and the sunset like over the air it's just amazing yeah oh how beautiful
- 3:10and you repeat on the relationship set I mean had mother say dinner with my mother just ignoring
- 3:16that question Sophie I know oh I'm down an arrow town I've had the most divine weekend with my
- 3:25mother we can you see the mountains behind me try to purposefully park up for this record so
- 3:31that you could see the view yeah can you see behind me oh my gosh it's tribal current no it's not
- 3:42but it was so nice see everyone like I went for we went for a walk round lake haze yesterday
- 3:47and I just decided I was like I'm gonna go for a swim I swim I should see photos this
- 3:52photos of me just fully nodes swimming and like guys at like two in the afternoon oh my god
- 3:58you crazy I was standing on a pontoon naked and I was just yelling like I love being naked
- 4:07oh my gosh different psych oh that lady over there she's a bit crazy oh god yep um hey well
- 4:16we're both refreshed we've been in nature markets markets markets so in the U.S not so good last
- 4:25week but one index the NASDAQ was up the other index the S&P 500 was down and then in
- 4:33Australian New Zealand they were up about half a percent so yeah pretty pretty okay in terms of
- 4:38the markets but we are still in reporting season in the U.S so this is when companies report their
- 4:43results and we had Disney so Walt Disney came out and their result wasn't great this year's
- 4:52were down about ten percent last week and no not Disney I can't even rude to Disney I don't know
- 4:58why I just sort of want them to do well the happiest place in the world is that this Logan I'm not sure
- 5:04why that has Disneyland that's Disneyland anyway they own Disneyland but the sheer price for was all
- 5:08off the back of the fact that they had really poor subscriber growth and Disney plus remember how
- 5:13they had the old CEO come back Bob Iger yes so this is this is the first result that he's had since
- 5:19he's been been back so not a good start but you do find that with a lot of CEOs that come into a CEO
- 5:26role at a company they do kind of like to I guess I'll just call it like clear the decks you know
- 5:32start from scratch so that's really badly and then we can show investors and you know customers
- 5:40and everyone else you how well we can do under my leadership if that makes sense so there is usually
- 5:46when you get a new CEO come in he wants to he or she wants to bring about change so they want to
- 5:52make changes and really put their mark on the company so usually you do see a bad result or two
- 5:57but yeah this was all off the back of subscriber numbers at Disney plus they they lost four million
- 6:03subscribers in the quarter so that's a lot of people share that and this is all around the
- 6:12fact that they increase prices so naturally you're going to have some people saying you know that's
- 6:17too much too much for me or I'm only going to have Netflix or Disney plus not both and that kind of
- 6:23thing but that was a lot bigger than what the market was expecting the market was expecting it
- 6:30to grow by about two million so that's about a six million dollar sorry six million subscriber
- 6:36difference so that's why the share price was off about 10% last week yikes yikes but they do have
- 6:44they've got 160 million subscribers which is quite good compared that to Netflix I mean Netflix
- 6:50has got 233 million so quite a big difference but I mean it's still a lot of people that have
- 6:56Disney plus do you use Disney plus I for the Kardashians yes
- 7:07Disney plus owns Hulu as well so they've got a few in this ESPN which we I don't think we can
- 7:12get in New Zealand but they have a few different platforms but when I'm talking about the
- 7:18subscribers I'm just talking about the Disney plus subscribers and they actually announced that
- 7:22they got to put through another price increase which means you know this could have that's good
- 7:26for profitability because it means that it means more revenue but if you don't have as many people
- 7:31subscribing that also impacts revenue so you're kind of it's you've got to play a careful game when
- 7:36you're increasing prices with any products I wonder what the reason of increasing is like if they
- 7:42think their product is worth more we've also seen like Netflix is increased as prices
- 7:47Apple plus is increased as price you a lot of them are increasing their prices
- 7:51due to inflation but this is the thing they've got these two parts of the business so
- 7:55you've got the streaming business and then you've got the theme parks and experiences business
- 7:59one did really well through COVID one did terribly and now you're seeing that reverse
- 8:04in terms of which one's doing well in which one's not so it's quite good to have that diverse
- 8:08business model that Disney has and so yeah we're seeing the theme parks and experiences
- 8:14and products all all do really well so that's helping the business overall.
- 8:17In other news we had palaton do you know what palaton is the bikes yes okay I just don't know
- 8:24did I know if you knew but that's good six and a six we died on a pattern yes yeah well done
- 8:30yeah so there's this interactive fitness company and they their main product is interactive
- 8:35fitness on bikes and they sell the actual bike and then they sell the software where you can
- 8:39like login and you can ride virtually with lots of lots of other people and it did fantastically
- 8:44well during COVID because everyone was having to exercise at home but still wanting that
- 8:48connection with other people and so it did so so so well but last week its share price fell about
- 8:539% as it announced a recall of over two million exercise bikes so this means this is bikes that
- 9:02they've sold people were enduring themselves I think it was something to do with the seat
- 9:07so the seat was unexpectedly breaking and so they had to recall over 2.2 million exercise bikes
- 9:16which is not only an administrative nightmare but that is all lost revenue you've just spent all
- 9:23that money making them selling those bikes you've got to recall them and then give and then replace
- 9:27them or repair them and so it's a huge huge huge distraction for the company and it was for
- 9:33bike sold in the US from 2018 to 2023 so that's a long period of time and they also announced a
- 9:41really terrible result so they're losses so they're not profit making yet so their losses are
- 9:48continuing to increase and it saw its first ever drop in subscribers this quarter so again we're
- 9:56seeing yeah people are probably making those tough decisions of what subscription should I keep
- 10:01subscribing to and which ones shouldn't I and unfortunately peloton and disney are two that people
- 10:06are obviously cutting back on like as I'm confused as to how that many bikes got out there into the world
- 10:12with seats that break you know or need to be recalled like that's a lot of the people that
- 10:17that's gone through and imagine how annoyed you'd be with the design team and ever on that kind of
- 10:21okay did oh and someone someone's head will definitely roll like you know there'll be people that will
- 10:27be fired for that and stuff because that is a huge cost for the business I'm almost surprised
- 10:32that the share price didn't go down more to be honest I mean 9% it's not even that considering
- 10:37what an absolute colossal disaster that is having to recall that many millions of miles but if we
- 10:45look at where the share price the share price so they IPO's which is when they first went public
- 10:50in September 19 so this is just before you know kind of six months before COVID hit the company IPO
- 10:58$25 a share at then went up to $160 from $25 to $160 while that is huge December 2020 was that $160
- 11:10mark and now it's $7 so it's already fallen yes you're so right this is this seems massive and the
- 11:19share price should fall way more than that but if you look if you zoom out and kind of look at the share
- 11:24price over the last couple of years it's already fallen from $160 to $7 so people aren't really pricing
- 11:32and a lot of growth for peloton with a $7 share price if that makes sense I don't think peloton
- 11:40would be one I'd be investing in personally good to know would you I mean there is there is a
- 11:50merit investing in companies that whose share prices have fallen so much because it's kind of like
- 11:54the probability of it falling further versus going up but it's all around if your product's faulty
- 12:02and getting that trust back from customers is really really difficult you know so that can take
- 12:07a long time to build back up that brand as this premium kind of exercise equipment true and so
- 12:15it's it depends if they can build that build that back up that would be the deciding factor that
- 12:20I would have to make if I was to buy shares in peloton at this level interesting and then lastly
- 12:26we had Twitter so remember Twitter is not a public company anymore but it still is in the headlines
- 12:32a lot because of Elon Musk and all the stuff that he's doing there so he has announced that he is
- 12:38stepping down as CEO but he's moving to executive chair person so that just means he is going
- 12:46he's he's going to be on the board so still going to make some you know some questionable
- 12:52decisions still going to be able to make yeah crucial decisions but he's not going to be able to
- 12:56he's not going to be on the day-to-day running of the business as CEO so he's got a new female CEO
- 13:02her name is Linda and she's she's going to start so she comes from media media company but
- 13:10why this is relevant is because Tesla's share price rose after this because people were happy
- 13:18all Tesla shareholders were really happy that they're like yay finally he's not going to be as
- 13:22distracted trying to run Twitter while also trying to run Tesla yeah so that was a good
- 13:27ness because the Tesla shares looking a little bit sad still to be honest I haven't checked my
- 13:32portfolio in a little bit but my Tesla shares are down down but also like in ECO running running
- 13:39at two businesses like that is nobody has left there's only 24 hours in a day Elon this is one
- 13:47of those times that I wish there was those you know how you're like you never know there's no
- 13:50crystal ball gazing but it's like if I'd known this if I'd known I would have probably
- 13:57invested more in my Tesla shares I know but then if we had crystal ball then yeah that wouldn't
- 14:03that wouldn't be that fun maybe just if you like I had a crystal ball oh gosh the things I would
- 14:08ask it what would be the first thing I'd ask oh surely love life when do I die oh would you
- 14:14actually ask that no I would not want to know we played that we are really strangers game in the
- 14:20weekend oh gosh we are not really strangers we had a few margaritas so how fun is that yeah there
- 14:34was one question in there it was like would you rather would you like to know if you when you
- 14:38were going to die I was like oh and then I said no because I was like imagine knowing that you're
- 14:45going to die tomorrow or even knowing you're going to die when you're hundred like it's still
- 14:49I don't know yeah I wouldn't want to know would you rather love life or stop market oh that's a
- 14:56god oh that's a god oh that's hard stop market oh honestly maybe stop
- 15:08never thought I'd see the day I'd be super wealthy I'd have the best portfolio
- 15:14god I'll just buy a present actually yeah oh gosh okay what else happening in the markets
- 15:24another quick little thing well it's not a quick little thing actually it's a massive deal which
- 15:29is really really awesome there's companies in the UK now that are offering IVF and like fertility
- 15:36tests and all these fertility benefits when you apply for a job now so it's all come about from
- 15:43the fact that getting staff is really hard at the moment you know there's really low unemployment
- 15:48so you really have to attract new staff with not only money benefits so you know higher salaries
- 15:55but also lots of other things and so what they're doing in the UK is they're seeing an increase
- 16:00in job offerings that are offering egg freezing IVF treatment you know time off so
- 16:06cool and miscarriages and all that kind of stuff and it's really awesome to see and I would love
- 16:11to see it more down here in New Zealand but your workplaces are identifying that if they want
- 16:17to have a more balanced gender it's senior leadership roles that they need to offer different
- 16:24benefits to a male as they do to a female and so it's really awesome just to see that these
- 16:28companies are kind of getting up with the times and well I think if you're wanting to increase
- 16:33the diversity at especially higher up and see sweet roles or management roles or CEO roles
- 16:39and whatever capacity you know there needs to be support for people who are in female bodies
- 16:44or identified as women because everyone's going to go through metapores everyone has their period
- 16:50not everyone wants to try for children but if they do it's just a fact that we have to take
- 16:55some time off work and I think if they're wanting to actually see change higher up and roles and
- 17:03all sorts of companies then they then needs to be better support for people who are just
- 17:08can't change the fact you can't change the fact that you get your period you can't try to do that
- 17:12if you're bed ridden with endometriosis pain you can't change that you might need some time in
- 17:17fact definitely we'll need time out of work if you have a miscarriage like how awful is that so I
- 17:22think to see businesses actually taking steps in the right direction to better facilitate women
- 17:30in the workplace I think that's amazing and how cool would it be if we could see that in New Zealand?
- 17:35Yes definitely that would be amazing New Zealand, listen, government,
- 17:41should we send dogs? Maybe we get Jacinda, she could help us out again,
- 17:47so I've seen Jacinda a few times recently. Down there? No, not down here when I was in Auckland
- 17:54walking down like K-road and stuff like I've seen her twice recently and I kind of want to
- 17:57back, but then also how annoying you know I just want to leave her alone. Oh I used to do that
- 18:03stars on short and straight that you'd see walking down the street you'd be like oh would you
- 18:07say no then you're like no no no but you do you think you know them but you don't they're just on
- 18:12TV. Yeah yeah yeah at a cafe there was a real cute guy and I was like I feel like I know him and
- 18:16then I literally only had to Google male New Zealand actor and he popped up. I didn't even know
- 18:21his name and I was like here he is. I do not know him. I will not be talking to him. No
- 18:29Oh nice. Well I could have taken it with her down there and the sunshine. Yeah please
- 18:36come on. Let's just hope I make it home. Oh gosh. We'll see you in three weeks. Yeah see you in
