- 0:01Speaker 1: Gospel Reflection for the first day of November in the
- 0:03Speaker 1: year of our Lord, 2026, and today is the Solemnity
- 0:06Speaker 1: of All Saints. The reading comes from Matthew chapter 5,
- 0:11Speaker 1: verses 1 through 2. And seeing the multitude, he went
- 0:15Speaker 1: up into a mountain, and when he was set down,
- 0:18Speaker 1: his disciples came unto him. And opening his mouth, he
- 0:21Speaker 1: taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for
- 0:23Speaker 1: theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek,
- 0:26Speaker 1: for they shall possess the land. Blessed are they that mourn,
- 0:29Speaker 1: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are they that hunger
- 0:32Speaker 1: and thirst after justice, for they shall have their fill.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed
- 0:38Speaker 1: are the clean of heart, for they shall see God.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children
- 0:44Speaker 1: of God. Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake,
- 0:48Speaker 1: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye
- 0:51Speaker 1: when they shall revile you and persecute you and speak
- 0:55Speaker 1: all that is evil against you untruly for my sake.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great
- 1:00Speaker 1: in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were
- 1:03Speaker 1: before you. And, yeah, that was Matthew 5, 1 through 12.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I think I said 1 through 2, but anyway, 1
- 1:10Speaker 1: through 12. The Dewey Reims notes, the poor in spirit,
- 1:14Speaker 1: that is, humble, and those whose spirit is not set
- 1:16Speaker 1: upon riches. Here we have the familiar Beatitudes, in which
- 1:20Speaker 1: our Lord informs us that those who suffer in this
- 1:23Speaker 1: life will be blessed in the next. That is the
- 1:25Speaker 1: beatific vision. In other words, in order to become a
- 1:28Speaker 1: saint and go to heaven, we must suffer on earth.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I am reminded of the words of St. Teresa of
- 1:32Speaker 1: Ovea to Jesus, If this is how you treat your friends,
- 1:35Speaker 1: no wonder you have so few of them. And it
- 1:38Speaker 1: is true that the modern concept that all Christians will
- 1:40Speaker 1: go to heaven simply based on their faith is quite
- 1:43Speaker 1: wrong and heretical. Protestants teach that faith alone is all
- 1:46Speaker 1: that's necessary for salvation. Jesus and his holy apostles never
- 1:50Speaker 1: said that. The Catholic Church has never taught that. Indeed,
- 1:54Speaker 1: our Lord gave parable after parable, making clear that one
- 1:57Speaker 1: could lose salvation. The road to hell is broad and easy.
- 2:00Speaker 1: The path to heaven is narrow, rocky, and steep. One
- 2:04Speaker 1: must endure until the end and follow the commands of God.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Luther said that no matter how many and how grave
- 2:12Speaker 1: the sins of a Christian may be, he cannot lose
- 2:14Speaker 1: his salvation. Jesus did not. Jesus said in Matthew 12,
- 2:20Speaker 1: And when an unclean spirit is gone out of a man,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none,
- 2:26Speaker 1: Then he saith, I will return to my house from
- 2:28Speaker 1: which I came out. And coming in, he findeth it empty, swept,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and garnished. Then he goeth and taketh with him seven
- 2:36Speaker 1: other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in
- 2:39Speaker 1: and dwell there. The last day of that man is
- 2:41Speaker 1: made worse than the first. But while we're promised suffering,
- 2:46Speaker 1: if we persist in following God and actually doing his will,
- 2:49Speaker 1: it's not as bad as some say. Consider today's first
- 2:52Speaker 1: reading from Revelation 7. And I saw another angel sending
- 2:56Speaker 1: from the rising of the sun, having the sign of
- 2:58Speaker 1: the living God, and he cried out with a loud
- 3:00Speaker 1: voice to the four angels to whom it was given
- 3:02Speaker 1: to hurt the earth and sea, saying, Hurt not the
- 3:05Speaker 1: earth nor the sea nor the trees till we sign
- 3:08Speaker 1: the servants of God in their foreheads. And I heard
- 3:12Speaker 1: the number of them that were signed, 144,000 were signed
- 3:17Speaker 1: of every tribe of the children of Israel. After this
- 3:20Speaker 1: I saw a great multitude, which no man could number,
- 3:23Speaker 1: of all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues, standing
- 3:25Speaker 1: before the throne and in the sight of the Lamb,
- 3:28Speaker 1: clothed with white robes and palms in their hand. And
- 3:31Speaker 1: they cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God,
- 3:35Speaker 1: who sitteth upon the throne and to the Lamb. And
- 3:38Speaker 1: all the angels stood around the throne, and the ancients
- 3:40Speaker 1: and the four living creatures, and they fell down before
- 3:42Speaker 1: the throne upon their faces and adored God, saying, Amen,
- 3:46Speaker 1: benediction and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving, honor and power
- 3:49Speaker 1: and strength to our God forever and ever. And one
- 3:52Speaker 1: of the ancients answered and said to me, These that
- 3:55Speaker 1: are clothed in white robes, who are they, and whence
- 3:57Speaker 1: came they? And I said to him, My Lord, thou knowest.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And he said to me, These are they who are
- 4:03Speaker 1: come out of the great tribulation, and have washed their robes,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Now,
- 4:09Speaker 1: John Calvin essentially taught, although his doctrine was a bit
- 4:12Speaker 1: more complex, that only 144,000 people would go to heaven,
- 4:18Speaker 1: and that these people were predestined before all time to
- 4:21Speaker 1: be saved. For that reason, it did not matter what
- 4:24Speaker 1: one believed, whether one had faith in Jesus as Lord
- 4:27Speaker 1: or what sins one committed. Those who followed his false
- 4:30Speaker 1: doctrine and had faith may be included in the others
- 4:33Speaker 1: mentioned in the verse, but not through following the teachings
- 4:36Speaker 1: of Christ and his holy apostles, or the good works
- 4:38Speaker 1: of charity and love of neighbor, or receiving the sacraments
- 4:41Speaker 1: or anything else that Jesus commanded. They would be saved
- 4:44Speaker 1: merely by a whim of God. His grace would save
- 4:47Speaker 1: some Christians but not others. Suffering for Christ didn't matter,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and the Beatitudes had no meaning. And I am left
- 4:55Speaker 1: to wonder, why did anyone ever listen to this heretic?
- 4:57Speaker 1: If it really didn't matter if you were Presbyterian or
- 5:00Speaker 1: Catholic or a Buddhist, you were predestined to go to
- 5:03Speaker 1: heaven no matter what you believed or did, why would
- 5:05Speaker 1: anybody have joined the Presbyterian Church? I don't know. I
- 5:09Speaker 1: cannot answer that. God calls all people of every nation
- 5:12Speaker 1: and ethnicity to salvation through the Holy Catholic Church. Both
- 5:17Speaker 1: the once saved, always saved, and damned if you do,
- 5:20Speaker 1: damned if you don't, here are Caesar Fault's evil lies.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Although the gate is narrow, those who love our Lord
- 5:25Speaker 1: and follow his commands may be saved through the merits
- 5:28Speaker 1: of his grace and our cooperation with the divine will.
- 5:31Speaker 1: This is neither a license to sin nor loss of hope.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Willingly obeying, having faith in, and suffering for Christ is
- 5:38Speaker 1: the one true path to sainthood. All right, you all
- 5:41Speaker 1: have a great day, and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Go to Mass. Go to Mass. Jesus said, you forsake
- 5:50Speaker 1: not the gathering of yourselves together on the Sabbath day.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Go to Mass and receive the sacraments. Receive the Eucharist.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Because without the Eucharist, Jesus said, you have no life
- 5:59Speaker 1: in you. If you want eternal life, you need to
- 6:02Speaker 1: go to Catholic Church and receive the Eucharist. You have
- 6:04Speaker 1: to be in communion with the Catholic Church to receive
- 6:06Speaker 1: the Eucharist, meaning not in a state of moral sin. So,
- 6:10Speaker 1: if you are aware of moral sin, go to confession
- 6:13Speaker 1: as soon as possible and then receive and you will
- 6:18Speaker 1: have the fullness of the Holy Spirit, which no Protestant
- 6:20Speaker 1: possesses because no Protestant is confirmed into the Catholic Church
- 6:23Speaker 1: and no Protestant can receive the Eucharist. And you will
- 6:27Speaker 1: have eternal life. You will have the life of God
- 6:30Speaker 1: himself within you, which is what Jesus promised through his
- 6:33Speaker 1: body and blood, which is the Eucharist. So anyway, have
- 6:36Speaker 1: a great Sunday. I'll talk to you tomorrow.
