- 3:29Speaker 2: Josh Miller is sitting right next to me from Vermont Fatherhood.
- 3:35Speaker 2: You watched, I'm guessing we got we just throw the
- 3:40Speaker 2: mic over and from your.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Puny him fak.
- 3:44Speaker 2: You watched the game. You said your son as a
- 3:46Speaker 2: big Pats fan, right.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, he's a big Pats fan.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You see. Okay, this morning, you.
- 3:51Speaker 5: Know, I didn't check in with him, but yeah, he
- 3:55Speaker 5: left fairly unhappy. We were all together, and you know, he's.
- 4:01Speaker 4: He's settled down over the years.
- 4:02Speaker 5: He's you know, and also he's you know, got like
- 4:04Speaker 5: a bunch of championships.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, we're too bad that much to complain about.
- 4:11Speaker 4: He's not a.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Vikings fan like me, which you know it could be
- 4:13Speaker 5: as it could be harder for him, so I don't
- 4:15Speaker 5: have that much sympathy. But he was definitely disappointed.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it was.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I lost track of how many times made was uh
- 4:24Speaker 2: was sacked? I really did, Yeah, it was.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I think he was sacked the most by any quarterback
- 4:30Speaker 4: in the.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Playoffs this year. Yeah, but he did great as well. Great, yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 2: yeah he did. Yeah, amazing and a lot of pressure.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I can't imagine that kind of pressure.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Yeah really yeah, Well it's you know, this guy was
- 4:43Speaker 5: a second year quarterback and he's you know, they I
- 4:45Speaker 5: think he surprised everybody by even doing as well as
- 4:48Speaker 5: he did. And I was there and yeah, so you know,
- 4:51Speaker 5: you know, you take it, take your wins, and and
- 4:53Speaker 5: uh you come back next year.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yeah what I said, hopefully hopefully hopefully back.
- 4:58Speaker 2: And I would think that he would be because he
- 5:00Speaker 2: really proved himself, I thought, not necessarily in the super Bowl,
- 5:05Speaker 2: but very much throughout the throughout the year. But what
- 5:09Speaker 2: did you what did you catch any of the half
- 5:11Speaker 2: Did you see any halftime show?
- 5:13Speaker 4: I did watch it.
- 5:14Speaker 5: It was interesting, you know, it was uh one is
- 5:18Speaker 5: you know, it's fun to watch.
- 5:20Speaker 4: The halftime show is always great. Commercials are always great.
- 5:22Speaker 5: And and there's a lot of hype about bad Bunny
- 5:26Speaker 5: and that, and so I'm not I'm not quite on
- 5:28Speaker 5: board with bad Bunny, but a lot of people are
- 5:30Speaker 5: and you know, it's just it's a fun thing to
- 5:33Speaker 5: you know, just get out there and do do the
- 5:35Speaker 5: entertainment piece.
- 5:36Speaker 4: And uh, probably not my favorite.
- 5:38Speaker 5: But you know, partially I do have a little Spanish,
- 5:41Speaker 5: but I could not really understand the lyrics, so yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 5: that that throws me off.
- 5:44Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 5:45Speaker 2: But yeah, I was kind of admittedly, I mean, it
- 5:50Speaker 2: was nice couple of a couple of nice celebrity cameos,
- 5:53Speaker 2: but I was it was nice to see uh uh
- 5:57Speaker 2: got him drawing a blank right now, Lady Gaga.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Ye, But yeah, I was kind of lost during that.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I know a lot of people flipped
- 6:06Speaker 2: over to YouTube and watched the Turning Point USA YouTube channel.
- 6:09Speaker 2: It was about four point eight I think at the
- 6:12Speaker 2: peak of people watching that with.
- 6:17Speaker 3: With Kid Rock and a few others. But yeah, I mean,
- 6:21Speaker 3: you know.
- 6:21Speaker 5: I always doing better with artists who are a little
- 6:24Speaker 5: more old school that they've been doing it for years,
- 6:25Speaker 5: because I just have I am so not with the
- 6:27Speaker 5: program with the new music, so yeah, it's more so
- 6:31Speaker 5: I'm not there yet, but but yeah.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Yeah it's good. I was adding more into the game
- 6:35Speaker 4: than I am.
- 6:36Speaker 5: The halftime show anywayself yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I don't know if you saw him, but it's you know,
- 6:41Speaker 2: I'll be I know, I'm gonna be having fun about
- 6:43Speaker 2: this all week long.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I don't I just the Robert Kraft yawn. I don't know.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Did you see that?
- 6:51Speaker 4: Did you? Yeah? Millions of other people did too. Yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 5: I was like, Okay, is it because you're just in
- 6:57Speaker 5: another super Bowl again? Or you were just like it
- 6:59Speaker 5: was not that excited, or it's too late for you
- 7:01Speaker 5: to be up.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's yeah, maybe a combination of all of
- 7:07Speaker 2: the above. But man, it's like the camera guys, like
- 7:09Speaker 2: you see it coming. He's like, oh, he's going to
- 7:12Speaker 2: go in for yawn and they kept the camera on him.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, full ony on.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, I'm happy to see you.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Man.
- 7:23Speaker 2: The last time you were in here it was stupid cold. Yeah,
- 7:29Speaker 2: and here it is again. I get a five this
- 7:31Speaker 2: week there and you and I both were in our
- 7:33Speaker 2: ball caps. We haven't figured this out yet, but I.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Know, and I complained about my kids not dressing appropriate
- 7:38Speaker 4: for the weather. So here we go.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yeah, tell tell us about Vermont fatherhood. For folks that
- 7:47Speaker 2: are not familiar, you're in here the second Monday of
- 7:53Speaker 2: the month. What is Vermont fatherhood?
- 7:56Speaker 4: Yeah, well thanks for having me. I appreciate it a lot.
- 7:59Speaker 5: And from my fatherhood is the bear bones explanation is
- 8:04Speaker 5: is you know, it's a place where deaths can come
- 8:06Speaker 5: and get supported and really helping dads be better dads.
- 8:09Speaker 5: I mean, you know, it's it's you know, learning from
- 8:12Speaker 5: other guys. We all have a place to come talk
- 8:14Speaker 5: about what's tough and and not feel judged and to
- 8:16Speaker 5: be able to do that and learn a few things
- 8:18Speaker 5: about parenting and and uh, you know, and also just community.
- 8:21Speaker 5: I mean that's a big part of it. Is Really
- 8:23Speaker 5: the idea is you know, I'm not I'm not a
- 8:25Speaker 5: therapist or a counselor, but that people can come and
- 8:27Speaker 5: you know, we meet other people and we're kind of,
- 8:30Speaker 5: you know, all in this together trying to figure it out,
- 8:32Speaker 5: you know. And and I think a lot of times
- 8:34Speaker 5: dads can can lone wolf fit. They're tough and they
- 8:37Speaker 5: they got this and or they don't and they still
- 8:40Speaker 5: don't reach out and and really trying to get guys
- 8:42Speaker 5: together to say, yeah, this is hard stuff, and how
- 8:44Speaker 5: do we do it better? And how do we do
- 8:45Speaker 5: it differently than you know, maybe how we grew up
- 8:47Speaker 5: and and and for our kids and for our families
- 8:51Speaker 5: and the most important thing for all of us.
- 8:53Speaker 4: And I think it's you.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Know, just you know, a space to do that in
- 8:57Speaker 5: a way that I think works for a lot of people.
- 8:59Speaker 5: And hoping more guys feel comfortable to come by and
- 9:02Speaker 5: just check it out and you know, have a quick conversation,
- 9:04Speaker 5: a cup of coffee and and talk about what's up.
- 9:07Speaker 2: How did this this? This tell me more about the
- 9:09Speaker 2: inception of this. You were in Burlington, right and and
- 9:13Speaker 2: kind of got something going over there.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Well, actually, if I were to go back a little
- 9:18Speaker 5: bit in time, so I used to work in southern Vermont.
- 9:22Speaker 5: I used to live in Brattleborough. And the initial thing
- 9:26Speaker 5: was I was working at a school called Kendall Farm
- 9:28Speaker 5: School for at risk boys, and I had this like
- 9:32Speaker 5: epiphany of realizing how many of the guys didn't have
- 9:34Speaker 5: their dads around, and so these guys are struggling. They
- 9:36Speaker 5: were you know, I was going through and and uh
- 9:38Speaker 5: and my personal stories. I grew up without a dad,
- 9:41Speaker 5: so you know, putting those things together and just realizing
- 9:45Speaker 5: you know that that's such a such a need. And
- 9:46Speaker 5: and I had done some groups with other men and
- 9:49Speaker 5: and just really kind of I grew a lot, I
- 9:52Speaker 5: think as a man and as a person, and and
- 9:54Speaker 5: I was like, well, let's get some guys together talk
- 9:55Speaker 5: about being dads. And so I approached a place called
- 9:58Speaker 5: Early Education Services, which is like a head Start parents
- 10:01Speaker 5: Chiut Center program, and just said, hey, I like you
- 10:04Speaker 5: started a dad's group.
- 10:05Speaker 4: And they were up for it.
- 10:07Speaker 5: And I just you know, came into an evening group
- 10:09Speaker 5: and we did childcare and food and it just took off.
- 10:13Speaker 5: I mean, the guys just I mean they were so
- 10:15Speaker 5: hungry for you know, conversation and talking about what it
- 10:18Speaker 5: means to be a dad, what it means to be
- 10:19Speaker 5: a man, and you know, learning some things and just connecting.
- 10:23Speaker 4: With other guys. And it was, you know, it was
- 10:25Speaker 4: pretty regular.
- 10:25Speaker 5: We created a nice thing after a little bit of
- 10:27Speaker 5: time of hey see you Thursday night.
- 10:30Speaker 4: You know, like guys are telling each other on the street,
- 10:32Speaker 4: you know, and.
- 10:33Speaker 5: So you know, we'd get a lot of guys coming,
- 10:36Speaker 5: and I think it had a big impact not just
- 10:37Speaker 5: on those guys and their families, but the community. I
- 10:39Speaker 5: think really realized how much, you know, we get dads
- 10:43Speaker 5: on board, how much you can really help families.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, so you said, got to bring this to the
- 10:49Speaker 2: Granite City.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Got to Yeah, I came here.
- 10:52Speaker 5: I moved here to Central mod probably like eleven years
- 10:55Speaker 5: or so ago, and I remember walking through Barry and
- 10:58Speaker 5: just seeing their dad's around, their dads with the kids.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I think it was summertime, and I just was like, well,
- 11:03Speaker 5: these guys, you know, they could use a place to
- 11:05Speaker 5: just go to and talk about being dads and and
- 11:08Speaker 5: and you know, it was just a feeling I had
- 11:10Speaker 5: early on. And then I had a little offshoot, a
- 11:13Speaker 5: long offshoot about eleven years and in Berlinton working with
- 11:16Speaker 5: families up there, working with dads specifically. And but then
- 11:22Speaker 5: I just I was became the director there and I
- 11:24Speaker 5: just did not I was like, it was fine, it
- 11:26Speaker 5: was great, and I love the organization, but realized how
- 11:29Speaker 5: much I want to work with dads and and so
- 11:31Speaker 5: I came back to Barry and just you know, hung
- 11:34Speaker 5: up my shingle back in June, and I'm just really
- 11:38Speaker 5: excited about what's building here and dads are coming, and
- 11:43Speaker 5: I just I think a lot of people are excited
- 11:44Speaker 5: about it and want to just continue to support dads
- 11:47Speaker 5: and families and and you know, all all members of
- 11:51Speaker 5: the family and because we need it.
- 11:53Speaker 4: It's hard, it's hard work out there.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Vermont Fatherhood dot org is your site in on there
- 12:00Speaker 2: is kind of a snapshot of all that you do.
- 12:04Speaker 2: And a big part of that is Tuesday nights.
- 12:08Speaker 3: What what? What is?
- 12:09Speaker 2: What's happening on Tuesday nights right here in your location
- 12:13Speaker 2: on North Main Street and Berry.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 4: So it's a called Dad's Night, Dad's Group.
- 12:18Speaker 5: We have guys come together, we do we do dinner,
- 12:21Speaker 5: we do childcare. Some guys don't have their kids with
- 12:24Speaker 5: them that day, so so it's if you don't have
- 12:27Speaker 5: your kid, or you don't have to, that's not that's
- 12:29Speaker 5: not a requirement. You just show up five o'clock and
- 12:33Speaker 5: you know, just check out with each other, introduce ourselves
- 12:36Speaker 5: and because sometimes there's a new guides really welcome in.
- 12:38Speaker 5: I think again creating a really welcoming space for for
- 12:41Speaker 5: new folks and and really just talk about, you know,
- 12:44Speaker 5: kind of what's going on in the week, talk about
- 12:46Speaker 5: what it means to be a dad, and and trying
- 12:48Speaker 5: to weave in some some education in there too.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Like we've been talking a little bit about child development.
- 12:54Speaker 5: I'm on nutrition. How do we feed our kids, what
- 12:56Speaker 5: how much do we feed our kids? How often do
- 12:57Speaker 5: we feed our kids when? And all that stuff. And
- 13:01Speaker 5: next week I think it is we have a retired
- 13:05Speaker 5: family doctor coming to talk about mince health. And I
- 13:08Speaker 5: just have been really wanted to do that for a
- 13:09Speaker 5: long time because I just think we just don't take
- 13:12Speaker 5: care of ourselves as well as we could. And and
- 13:14Speaker 5: I'm a big preacher of you know, the more you take.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Care of yourself, the better of a father you'll be.
- 13:19Speaker 5: Yeah, And you know, whether it's sleep, you know, mental health,
- 13:25Speaker 5: physical health, you know, our spiritual health, like all the
- 13:27Speaker 5: pieces that we do. When we're when we're on top
- 13:31Speaker 5: of our stuff, we are way better.
- 13:32Speaker 2: At Did you see that Mike Tyson commercial last night?
- 13:36Speaker 2: I missed that one was talking about processed foods and
- 13:41Speaker 2: how heavy he used to be. Yeah, and it was
- 13:46Speaker 2: just a very profound commercial.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, No, I think it's you know, what
- 13:50Speaker 5: we put in our bodies and how we take care
- 13:52Speaker 5: of ourselves.
- 13:53Speaker 4: And you know, I mean just eating bad so hard
- 13:56Speaker 4: to eat.
- 13:56Speaker 5: You know, we're on the fly, we're running around and
- 13:59Speaker 5: you know it's not you know, grab some chicken nuggets
- 14:01Speaker 5: from McDonald's or whatever. It is and instead of you know,
- 14:04Speaker 5: it's not that we can't have that, but just how
- 14:06Speaker 5: do we put other stuff in our body that's good
- 14:07Speaker 5: for us and sure make sure that we're we're sharp
- 14:10Speaker 5: and feeling good and and.
- 14:13Speaker 4: And so reminding ourselves how important that is.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to ask you, do you get dads
- 14:21Speaker 2: that that talk about or ask you about how to
- 14:26Speaker 2: navigate the word no, how to how to deal with that,
- 14:31Speaker 2: because at some point it's it becomes really challenging to
- 14:37Speaker 2: say no to your kid if they get around that
- 14:42Speaker 2: age where they're they're defiant. And yesterday was my day.
- 14:50Speaker 2: I was kind of driving the bus solo for a
- 14:53Speaker 2: big part.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Of the day.
- 14:54Speaker 2: And I don't know if it was mom's away I'm
- 14:58Speaker 2: gonna test dad or not. But man, it's like I
- 15:03Speaker 2: was coming out with the nose left and right. And
- 15:07Speaker 2: not only that, but you need to do this, You
- 15:12Speaker 2: need to do that. You've got some chores and some responsibilities,
- 15:16Speaker 2: and man, the pushback I got was brutal yesterday. Yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 2: really hard.
- 15:23Speaker 3: It was bad.
- 15:24Speaker 5: There's a lot to say about that, and I think
- 15:26Speaker 5: it's one is how we say no is important. I
- 15:29Speaker 5: think no my last place up at the family room
- 15:32Speaker 5: in Burlington. We talked about saying no is a loving word. Actually,
- 15:36Speaker 5: there are times we need to you know, one of
- 15:37Speaker 5: the things we need to have is we need to
- 15:38Speaker 5: have good boundaries and good limits with our kids.
- 15:41Speaker 4: We also need to have a lot of yeses too.
- 15:42Speaker 5: You know, Yep, you can do that, this is what
- 15:44Speaker 5: you can do, this is what you you know you
- 15:46Speaker 5: can do or hey not now, we'll do it later.
- 15:48Speaker 4: We'll figure it out, you know.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Right now I'm doing something and you're doing something, and
- 15:52Speaker 5: we'll figure.
- 15:52Speaker 4: It out later. But nose are okay.
- 15:55Speaker 5: And but I think that you know, how we say
- 15:58Speaker 5: things is something I talk.
- 15:59Speaker 4: About a lot.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Is it's not just what you say, but the tone
- 16:03Speaker 5: you have, the you know, the words you use a
- 16:05Speaker 5: really matter.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I think around our kids and that we are putting
- 16:09Speaker 4: out a lot of yes is. You know, it's not that.
- 16:10Speaker 6: You always say no, you know, like it's that And
- 16:13Speaker 6: guess what, kids are testing the limits and that's their
- 16:16Speaker 6: job too, That's their job is to push the limits
- 16:19Speaker 6: and find out where's dad at, you know, Mom's not around,
- 16:22Speaker 6: or even if mom is around, or if I get no.
- 16:24Speaker 5: From from one one parent, do I go to the
- 16:27Speaker 5: other parent for the yes and have to be yesterday
- 16:29Speaker 5: Actually it didn't.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Work out well. But you know it's like, how do we,
- 16:34Speaker 4: you know, deal with that?
- 16:35Speaker 5: And I think just recognizing we have certain things that
- 16:38Speaker 5: we're trying to teach our kids and that you know,
- 16:40Speaker 5: there are no's out there and and uh and I
- 16:43Speaker 5: think it's also you know, when can we get to yes?
- 16:46Speaker 4: What does that mean to say?
- 16:48Speaker 5: You know, this is how we get there, This is
- 16:50Speaker 5: what has to happen. You have to clean your room,
- 16:51Speaker 5: you know, you got to go walk the dog and
- 16:53Speaker 5: and and you know, do your homework or whatever, and
- 16:56Speaker 5: then and then let's go.
- 16:57Speaker 4: You know, we'll go do this afterwards, you know something
- 17:01Speaker 4: like that.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Huh.
- 17:01Speaker 2: We we kind of have uh and it's important to
- 17:04Speaker 2: have uh it kind of an agreement with with your
- 17:09Speaker 2: partner if you have one on the word no.
- 17:15Speaker 3: We we Chrilyn and I we we have always.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Kind of followed by the the rule of no wins,
- 17:25Speaker 2: so you know, and I can give you millions of
- 17:28Speaker 2: examples on that. But you know, Lily really wants to
- 17:31Speaker 2: ride this particular roller coaster, asks I say yes, if
- 17:40Speaker 2: mom says no, not to say. There won't be any
- 17:44Speaker 2: pressure put on mom, by myself and by Lily. But
- 17:51Speaker 2: in the end, we we both have an understanding that
- 17:55Speaker 2: whoever says no is ultimately good win. That's interesting, interesting
- 18:03Speaker 2: because you know, we can talk about why she was
- 18:10Speaker 2: so insistent on no, what made her uncomfortable, the details
- 18:16Speaker 2: about why she was saying no about that particular roller
- 18:19Speaker 2: coaster or whatever it is. But that's conversation we'll have later.
- 18:23Speaker 2: But I was bummed out mom. Mom had to put
- 18:27Speaker 2: her foot down and say no.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think it's you know, there are there
- 18:31Speaker 5: is that there's navigating the co parenting thing around you know,
- 18:33Speaker 5: yes and no, because we definitely have My wife and
- 18:36Speaker 5: I definitely have a you know, she has a no,
- 18:40Speaker 5: and and and I have a yes. And if he
- 18:42Speaker 5: comes to me first, and if the other one is
- 18:44Speaker 5: what Mom says no. This is what happened yesterday. Mom
- 18:47Speaker 5: said no.
- 18:49Speaker 4: My son came to me.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Now I didn't really know when I was in the
- 18:51Speaker 5: middle of playing with my ten year old and then
- 18:54Speaker 5: he's like, hey.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Can I go do this?
- 18:55Speaker 5: And I was like, oh, that sounds fine, you know.
- 18:57Speaker 5: And I was like, okay, well make sure you do this,
- 18:59Speaker 5: make sure you do that, and and and and he
- 19:02Speaker 5: took off and then his you know, my wife came
- 19:05Speaker 5: and was like what and just you know, so we
- 19:07Speaker 5: had we had a we had a moment and you know,
- 19:09Speaker 5: I realized that chicked at you or him combination, combination,
- 19:14Speaker 5: and he was like all around like you know, just
- 19:16Speaker 5: upset about it. And yep, and you know, for our
- 19:21Speaker 5: last conversation, I apologized to her that I made the
- 19:23Speaker 5: wrong decision and I let him know that I made
- 19:24Speaker 5: the wrong decision and that going forward, I will, you know,
- 19:28Speaker 5: reinforce what we had Mom and I had talked about
- 19:31Speaker 5: and agreed upon what was going to happen is around
- 19:33Speaker 5: driving his car. So so that's the that's the thing
- 19:37Speaker 5: of like, you know, trying to figure that out and
- 19:39Speaker 5: and yeah we do disagree, and trying to figure that
- 19:41Speaker 5: out and how we again, how we come together as
- 19:43Speaker 5: parents and you know, I knows the sort of the
- 19:46Speaker 5: one that kind of rules the roost.
- 19:49Speaker 4: There might be reasons, but you know, you do got
- 19:51Speaker 4: to figure it out later.
- 19:52Speaker 5: And and I will say the other thing about saying no,
- 19:54Speaker 5: and I don't know in your household, but if you're
- 19:56Speaker 5: saying no a lot, guess what our kids are going
- 19:59Speaker 5: to learn? You know, they're going to learn no back,
- 20:02Speaker 5: They're going to learn no to other things. Maybe it's
- 20:04Speaker 5: not to you directly, but they'll you know, hey, do
- 20:06Speaker 5: you want to go do this?
- 20:07Speaker 4: No? No, no, you know.
- 20:10Speaker 5: And so I think it's important that we balance out
- 20:13Speaker 5: our nos and yes is yeah.
- 20:14Speaker 4: And and and reasonably no.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Understand why our knows are there, sure, but that we
- 20:19Speaker 5: love our kids, we want to keep them safe, and
- 20:20Speaker 5: we want to you know, put them in good position
- 20:22Speaker 5: for lots of things.
- 20:23Speaker 4: And so knows are okay.
- 20:25Speaker 2: And also yeah, they are very okay and sometimes can
- 20:29Speaker 2: be one of the most powerful words that we use.
- 20:34Speaker 2: And it's also important, I think, to tell your kids
- 20:37Speaker 2: that you don't have to justify or explain or validate
- 20:42Speaker 2: your no to anyone other than your mom and dad.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's you know, it's it's it's such
- 20:51Speaker 5: an interesting thing. I think it's, you know, there's no
- 20:53Speaker 5: one way or the other. And I think people have
- 20:55Speaker 5: a different way. But I think that we, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 5: we some when we say no, no means know in
- 21:00Speaker 5: a lot of different contexts. And and I think that
- 21:04Speaker 5: you know, how when it comes to our kids, I talk,
- 21:08Speaker 5: I talk with what we talked about you know, about
- 21:10Speaker 5: limit setting a lot, and I think it's just so important.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Kids just don't know what those are and and and
- 21:16Speaker 5: they're not going to get it even if you explain
- 21:17Speaker 5: it seven times, it doesn't matter because they want it
- 21:19Speaker 5: to be yes. That we just have to you know,
- 21:22Speaker 5: the bottom line, and and that's that is really important
- 21:24Speaker 5: for kids to know there are limits to things, and
- 21:28Speaker 5: and that when you know when we say.
- 21:30Speaker 4: No, that you need to you know, follow that.
- 21:32Speaker 5: And you know, you can come up with all the
- 21:34Speaker 5: reasons in the world as a parent, but you're getting're right.
- 21:36Speaker 5: You know, you don't have to justify every single one
- 21:38Speaker 5: like you want to teach teach our kids.
- 21:40Speaker 4: But we also just need to say nope, not today.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I remember my mom saying, and I'm sure many can
- 21:49Speaker 2: relate to this, just saying because I said no, or
- 21:56Speaker 2: because I said so.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Because I said so. Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yeah, we're diving deep this morning into not just fatherhood,
- 22:05Speaker 2: I think parenthood, but from a fatherhood is a new
- 22:11Speaker 2: organization right here, nonprofit on North Main Street in Barry.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Josh Miller as my guest, and we're diving into how
- 22:20Speaker 2: parents can be better, do more for our kids, support independence,
- 22:27Speaker 2: build confidence, build trust. And one of the challenges with
- 22:33Speaker 2: my little girl at eleven years old now is we
- 22:36Speaker 2: got the tablets, we got the devices. She doesn't have
- 22:39Speaker 2: her own cell phone yet, but wants to use my
- 22:42Speaker 2: cell phone, always looking for a charger, always looking to
- 22:48Speaker 2: be tethered and connected. And there's a lot to be
- 22:53Speaker 2: said about this because I think, especially when it's a
- 22:57Speaker 2: really really cold day, your kid is home, it's yeah,
- 23:05Speaker 2: I think it's important to break away and do something.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Get outside if you can be active, make a snowman
- 23:15Speaker 2: and go sledting, build a fort, do something. But also indoors,
- 23:20Speaker 2: help me clean this or that room, or let's have fun,
- 23:26Speaker 2: let's do a project together, Let's maybe do some some
- 23:29Speaker 2: some arts and crafts or something. Let's watch a movie together.
- 23:34Speaker 2: But man, so many kids want to just like get
- 23:37Speaker 2: so locked in two their tablets. Yeah, yeah, but they
- 23:44Speaker 2: want to be and that's important that they can be
- 23:46Speaker 2: connected to their friends when they're when they're when they're
- 23:49Speaker 2: at home.
- 23:51Speaker 3: I wasn't able to do that.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Yeah, Uh it's a big it's a it's a big
- 23:57Speaker 5: one in our home.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Trying to figure that out.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Uh, what I'll say is that you know, yeah, I
- 24:03Speaker 5: think that can you bounce it out with some activity?
- 24:05Speaker 5: Can you do can we you know, go play basketball
- 24:08Speaker 5: if it's inside, like it's been hard, it's been hard
- 24:10Speaker 5: to winteres say go outside and play, go outside and
- 24:12Speaker 5: do that. You know, there's a lot there's a lot
- 24:14Speaker 5: of snow. It's not going anywhere. It's hard to you know,
- 24:17Speaker 5: usually I can get the guys out, let's go play
- 24:18Speaker 5: football and you know, just run around and do that.
- 24:21Speaker 5: And it's been hard to do. It's not you know,
- 24:22Speaker 5: we we don't have a lot of space to do that.
- 24:24Speaker 5: And it's really cold outside and so we get we
- 24:28Speaker 5: get locked in inside and and uh, you know, so
- 24:31Speaker 5: how can we you know, balance that out with some
- 24:34Speaker 5: activity and some games. And I think that there's a
- 24:37Speaker 5: lot it's a big conversation, but I think, you know,
- 24:40Speaker 5: one thing I'll say is the technology today is so smart,
- 24:45Speaker 5: it's so good, it's so entertaining and so addictive, and
- 24:50Speaker 5: it's not just kids, and so how do we you know,
- 24:53Speaker 5: model that and say we'll go do this.
- 24:55Speaker 4: But we're we're on it.
- 24:56Speaker 5: You know, we're working on them, we're we're socializing on them,
- 24:59Speaker 5: we're you know, distracting ourselves with it. It's great, it's
- 25:04Speaker 5: such great, you know stuff, but we got to, you know,
- 25:07Speaker 5: make sure that we're like, hey, let's put our phones down.
- 25:09Speaker 5: Everybody put our phones down, and you know, whatever their
- 25:11Speaker 5: device is, and let's let's play a game.
- 25:13Speaker 4: You know.
- 25:13Speaker 5: I was like yesterday, it was like, all right, let's
- 25:16Speaker 5: play Henry, let's play sorry, let's go do you know,
- 25:18Speaker 5: let's go do this, like let's play basketball.
- 25:20Speaker 4: You know, he's got a little basketball hoop in his room,
- 25:22Speaker 4: Like let's do this.
- 25:22Speaker 3: And fictionary and cleaning his.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Room and oh I love that you and uh and
- 25:26Speaker 5: you know, like just mix it up a bit. And
- 25:29Speaker 5: there's that, and then still setting limit because there's still
- 25:31Speaker 5: a lot of time in the day, like okay, so
- 25:33Speaker 5: clean your room took twenty minutes, played basketball for half
- 25:36Speaker 5: an hour. We played a game for twenty minutes, and
- 25:38Speaker 5: there's still one more time. Heye you eat breakfast? Did
- 25:40Speaker 5: you take a shower?
- 25:40Speaker 4: Did you you know.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Whatever it is?
- 25:42Speaker 5: And and uh, you know, and some days, you know,
- 25:45Speaker 5: when when you get a buddy over, that's kind of
- 25:46Speaker 5: nice and even if they're they're on games, they're hanging
- 25:48Speaker 5: out together fun. But it is hard, and that's where
- 25:51Speaker 5: I talk about know's it's like you just gotta.
- 25:54Speaker 4: You know, and and parents don't always agree on that.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Either, you know, and so but yeah, I think gets
- 26:00Speaker 5: you know, try to trying to get our kids to
- 26:02Speaker 5: do other stuff.
- 26:04Speaker 4: But it's it's a it's a daily battle.
- 26:06Speaker 5: For I think most families, Yeah, of doing that.
- 26:10Speaker 2: And it's February, sure, exactly, And and just the overall,
- 26:15Speaker 2: you know, not wanting to leave the house. But there
- 26:20Speaker 2: are so many, uh, there's so many great things you
- 26:22Speaker 2: can find if you're especially you know, we're talking about
- 26:26Speaker 2: social media here, but I mean, man, it's like all
- 26:29Speaker 2: over Facebook, the events, things going on, uh, things indoors,
- 26:34Speaker 2: so much happening. I mean I was just taking a
- 26:38Speaker 2: glance through what's happening in Burlington alone, just this this
- 26:43Speaker 2: past weekend. Just tons of stuff. And and think that
- 26:46Speaker 2: we you know, we've got a couple of great gyms.
- 26:48Speaker 2: We've got gyms with pools. You can get down to
- 26:52Speaker 2: White River and and get into indoors and just really
- 26:56Speaker 2: chew up a whole day and you're you're you're being
- 26:59Speaker 2: physically active and you're having a good time too. Bring
- 27:02Speaker 2: and and and let your kids bring friends with them too.
- 27:05Speaker 4: No, that's the ticket.
- 27:06Speaker 5: And I think what I'll say, if you have the
- 27:08Speaker 5: resources and the transportation to be able to go, you know,
- 27:11Speaker 5: let's hop in the car and go do this. It
- 27:13Speaker 5: does take you know, you got to kind of as
- 27:15Speaker 5: a parent, you got to kind of you know, because
- 27:16Speaker 5: it's like, oh gosh, I gotta stet the car, it's cold,
- 27:18Speaker 5: it's everything else. Yeah, and it's hard to motivate, but yes,
- 27:20Speaker 5: let's go do something or even have something that's regular
- 27:22Speaker 5: that's kind of built in, like go down and do something.
- 27:24Speaker 5: And I think that that's I mean, I need to
- 27:27Speaker 5: do a better job of that, you know, just like
- 27:28Speaker 5: let's get out of here and go do something. And
- 27:31Speaker 5: uh and I think, you know, it's it's it's hard
- 27:35Speaker 5: to do, but we got to do it and mix
- 27:36Speaker 5: it up with our kids, even in the cold winter months.
- 27:39Speaker 4: And and you know.
- 27:40Speaker 5: It's also the other piece of it that is the
- 27:42Speaker 5: value of that it's not just getting out of the
- 27:44Speaker 5: house and opting on video games, but spending time together.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Sure, and I you know something I.
- 27:48Speaker 5: Really you know, I haven't really talked about with our
- 27:51Speaker 5: with a lot of our guys I work with or
- 27:53Speaker 5: with their kids a lot, but you know, just really
- 27:55Speaker 5: engaging with your kids, just spending time with them. And
- 27:57Speaker 5: sometimes we're so busy we forget like, oh, yeah, you know,
- 28:00Speaker 5: there's all the to do's, but let's go do something together.
- 28:03Speaker 5: Let's get you know. I mean we've got I've got
- 28:04Speaker 5: two kids that are working. I got another kid that's
- 28:06Speaker 5: doing you know, doing sports or whatever. It's hard to
- 28:09Speaker 5: get us all together at the same time to go
- 28:10Speaker 5: do something and just you know, go do something, and
- 28:13Speaker 5: and and even if it is the movies and you're
- 28:15Speaker 5: sitting in front of the screen too, but just get
- 28:17Speaker 5: out and do something with your kids. And I think
- 28:19Speaker 5: it's really important to do that, get out of the house.
- 28:22Speaker 5: And and again, if you have all those resources, going
- 28:25Speaker 5: to the movies.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Is not cheap these days. But you know, we're getting there.
- 28:29Speaker 5: Well, you know, we'll get into March here soon and
- 28:31Speaker 5: a little easier to get outside.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Shame on me.
- 28:33Speaker 2: I forgot about the the movies. That's that's a great
- 28:37Speaker 2: way to you know, and make it a double feature too,
- 28:41Speaker 2: go see two movies.
- 28:42Speaker 3: It's just cold outside.
- 28:44Speaker 2: And you know, which makes me think, here, it's a
- 28:49Speaker 2: five dollars movie day every Monday over the Paramount, So
- 28:54Speaker 2: I mean it's perfect go see a movie tonight for
- 28:57Speaker 2: five bucks at the Paramount Theater after theaters dot com
- 29:01Speaker 2: for all the showings. But yeah, I mean that's a
- 29:03Speaker 2: great point. You know, I want to ask you about
- 29:06Speaker 2: you we're talking. First of all, we're talking with Josh Miller.
- 29:09Speaker 2: He is the founder of Vermont Fatherhood right here in Barry,
- 29:14Speaker 2: vermontfatherhood dot org, talking a little bit about setting up
- 29:18Speaker 2: some parameters and making sure that our kids are not
- 29:24Speaker 2: diving too deep into screen time in general, especially on
- 29:31Speaker 2: their devices. But do you get a lot of dads
- 29:34Speaker 2: on Tuesday nights when you when you meet with them,
- 29:36Speaker 2: who ask you about some tips on maybe navigating your
- 29:43Speaker 2: kids safety, what they're hearing, what they're seeing on their
- 29:48Speaker 2: tablets and devices, Because some of us, I might be
- 29:55Speaker 2: one of them, are a little out of touch with
- 30:02Speaker 2: the algorithms of what our kids are seeing and hearing
- 30:06Speaker 2: and what they're swiping on they're just constant swipes, swipe
- 30:09Speaker 2: swipes going through reels or I mean, we've got mom
- 30:14Speaker 2: is more dialed into this than I am. She's got
- 30:16Speaker 2: a lot of parameters set up. But still, though kids
- 30:20Speaker 2: have a way, especially when they get into their.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Teens of.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Cutting cutting some corners and doing things that mom and
- 30:32Speaker 2: dad are frankly out of touch with.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's boy, that is a tricky one. It
- 30:38Speaker 5: has come up. And actually in our conversations a lot
- 30:41Speaker 5: of people have younger kids, so some of the things
- 30:43Speaker 5: around cell phones aren't is.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Like prevalent for them.
- 30:47Speaker 5: But yeah, we you know, like actually working with a
- 30:50Speaker 5: dad that I just I mean, just this last week,
- 30:52Speaker 5: I said, he wants to do some work with.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Safety around technology with kids.
- 30:58Speaker 5: And I said, listen, man, I said, you know, I said,
- 31:01Speaker 5: I've been helping this guy out and meeting with him
- 31:03Speaker 5: a bit, and I said, listen, not an altruistic guy.
- 31:05Speaker 5: I always got something up my sleeve. And I said, listen,
- 31:07Speaker 5: I want you to come meet with our guys. You know,
- 31:09Speaker 5: I want you to come at some point when the
- 31:10Speaker 5: time's right, come talk to about about safety and technology.
- 31:14Speaker 4: And all the different ages of our kids.
- 31:15Speaker 5: You know, whether they're five years old, you know, you
- 31:17Speaker 5: get on, get on five years old, you get online.
- 31:20Speaker 5: You know, it becomes a whole different thing as opposed
- 31:22Speaker 5: to just a game that you you put in the
- 31:24Speaker 5: Xbox and you can play at but you're not online.
- 31:26Speaker 4: But once you go online, you just you know.
- 31:28Speaker 5: You're subject to some some different risks there and to
- 31:32Speaker 5: to you know, chats.
- 31:34Speaker 4: That are out there to you know, if you know.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Your kids have cell phones and and all the access
- 31:39Speaker 5: to that that that does, and even just being exposed.
- 31:42Speaker 5: Other kids have phones that maybe your kid doesn't. Yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 5: and let me show you something exactly, you know, and
- 31:47Speaker 5: so things that we won't want our kids to see
- 31:50Speaker 5: and or that we don't really know that they're seeing
- 31:52Speaker 5: and how that's affecting them. And that's a whole other
- 31:55Speaker 5: world when they're at school and as we get into elementary,
- 31:57Speaker 5: late elementary to middle school, you know, you're at that
- 32:00Speaker 5: stage too, and and so like you're like, okay, what's
- 32:03Speaker 5: out there?
- 32:03Speaker 4: And and and and.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Then you know all that I was thinking about, you know,
- 32:08Speaker 5: when we're talking about video games of like what.
- 32:10Speaker 4: We allow our kids to play?
- 32:11Speaker 5: What what are you know, what are appropriate games for
- 32:13Speaker 5: different ages and all that too. It's a big conversation
- 32:17Speaker 5: and trying to figure that stuff out. And you know,
- 32:19Speaker 5: we do have to be you know, easy term dialed in.
- 32:22Speaker 5: We do have to you know, pay attention and like
- 32:24Speaker 5: checking on that, checking on hey, if your kid's got
- 32:26Speaker 5: a cell phone, Like, hey, I can check your phone
- 32:27Speaker 5: at any point.
- 32:28Speaker 4: Let's go see what you're doing.
- 32:29Speaker 5: Let's check out the history, let's check out you know what,
- 32:31Speaker 5: what's if you're on TikTok, Like what is that stuff
- 32:33Speaker 5: that you're seeing? And yeah, it's some dangerous stuff out there.
- 32:36Speaker 5: And even if it doesn't necessarily mean that there's you
- 32:39Speaker 5: get connected to somebody out there who's got some bad intentions,
- 32:42Speaker 5: just you know.
- 32:42Speaker 4: What are they seeing?
- 32:43Speaker 5: What are they you know all what they're exposed to
- 32:45Speaker 5: and and you know, talk about no's and setting limits,
- 32:48Speaker 5: that's one that I would say I need to get
- 32:51Speaker 5: better at too. And and we got two boys with
- 32:53Speaker 5: cell phones and and uh and so there, you know,
- 32:58Speaker 5: I think there's a lot of trust there, but there's
- 32:59Speaker 5: also a lot of you know, they're off doing their
- 33:02Speaker 5: thing and you know, with not a lot of limits.
- 33:07Speaker 4: They're just is they have the Internet at their you.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Know shure and you have two boys that are teenagers.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Ye seen, Yeah, so you know there's there's a lot
- 33:19Speaker 2: happening here. And I'm sure you're you're getting dad's with
- 33:25Speaker 2: kids of all ages that and you've kind of navigated
- 33:31Speaker 2: a full a full spectrum here, which is crazy.
- 33:34Speaker 3: Uh.
- 33:35Speaker 2: You know, We've got one comment here from from a
- 33:38Speaker 2: parent saying, you know, it's important to play with your kids,
- 33:42Speaker 2: to sit and have some quiet time, read a book
- 33:45Speaker 2: to them or have them read to you, which is
- 33:49Speaker 2: something that we do regularly at at my house. And
- 33:54Speaker 2: sometimes it's really embraced and other times it's not so much.
- 34:00Speaker 2: And you know, at what point do we say this
- 34:03Speaker 2: is this is a hill I'm willing to die on here.
- 34:06Speaker 3: You know, But it's important if if your.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Kids are young enough where their their their minds are creative,
- 34:14Speaker 2: they want to interact and engage and play, either with
- 34:19Speaker 2: toys or something. Man as a as a mom or dad,
- 34:23Speaker 2: you've got to you need to put your stuff aside
- 34:28Speaker 2: and get down on the floor and and play. Yeah,
- 34:32Speaker 2: and even if it seems way unnatural for you, you've
- 34:38Speaker 2: got to do it.
- 34:38Speaker 3: It's that's like critical stuff.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Well, I'll say a couple of things.
- 34:43Speaker 5: First thing, I'm gonna tell you this, if your dad
- 34:45Speaker 5: out there and you're not sure how to play, come
- 34:47Speaker 5: see me because I am very good at playing, especially
- 34:51Speaker 5: with little ones. I was something that I think that
- 34:53Speaker 5: was my best skill set as a as a dad
- 34:55Speaker 5: with young kids was just playing and playing and doing
- 34:59Speaker 5: all the stuff and being silly and all that. And
- 35:01Speaker 5: it is the it is. Guess what, it's free. It's
- 35:05Speaker 5: at your disposal at any point. Let's get down on
- 35:08Speaker 5: the hands and knees and play. You know, we can
- 35:09Speaker 5: play cars, we can play you know, we can play
- 35:13Speaker 5: you know, the playhouse.
- 35:14Speaker 4: We can color, we can draw.
- 35:15Speaker 5: So many things that we can do out there that
- 35:16Speaker 5: are you know, really no cost. And you can do
- 35:19Speaker 5: it at the drop of a hat. And get out
- 35:21Speaker 5: there and play with our kids. The most important thing
- 35:22Speaker 5: when our kids are young, they are learning so much
- 35:25Speaker 5: when we're doing and they're doing that, and and it's
- 35:28Speaker 5: it is important for your relationship with your kids to play,
- 35:31Speaker 5: and not just when they're little, but as they get
- 35:33Speaker 5: older and just to spend time with them. And and
- 35:35Speaker 5: you know, it's the best counter to the to the
- 35:38Speaker 5: video games, to the to the screens. It's like, hey,
- 35:40Speaker 5: let's go play. If I my son will be on
- 35:42Speaker 5: he'll be playing mad and on the you know. And
- 35:45Speaker 5: I was like, hey, you want to go and play football? Yep,
- 35:47Speaker 5: boom like and and and we'll get out and we'll
- 35:50Speaker 5: throw the football around.
- 35:51Speaker 4: Well, you know, get the other brothers out there hopefully.
- 35:53Speaker 5: And play some football and and but they're just it's
- 35:56Speaker 5: so important to be doing that with our kids. That is,
- 35:59Speaker 5: I mean, it's it has you know, long lasting just
- 36:02Speaker 5: you know, that relationship is so important. Sure, and that
- 36:05Speaker 5: way when you know, I'm going to tie these together here,
- 36:07Speaker 5: that way when the note comes up, they trust you.
- 36:10Speaker 5: They believe, like my, my dad has my best interest
- 36:12Speaker 5: in me and you know, for me, and and uh
- 36:15Speaker 5: and so yep, he said, but he said, yes, three
- 36:17Speaker 5: times today we played this, we played that.
- 36:20Speaker 4: But then you know, he said, no, we're not going
- 36:21Speaker 4: to do that.
- 36:22Speaker 5: And you know, and and I think those things matter
- 36:25Speaker 5: as well. So that ties into that. But playing with
- 36:27Speaker 5: our kids and reading to them, I can't tell you,
- 36:30Speaker 5: you know how much I've you know, heard how much
- 36:32Speaker 5: a lot of kids who just I think COVID affected
- 36:34Speaker 5: that too, just of like how much you know, reading
- 36:37Speaker 5: to your kids is so important, having a routine that
- 36:39Speaker 5: you just you know, every night, reading something, so it
- 36:42Speaker 5: could be a short book, could be a you know,
- 36:44Speaker 5: even a picture book and talking to talking about what
- 36:46Speaker 5: the pictures are. But and then having our kids read too,
- 36:51Speaker 5: like it just has so much benefit for our kids.
- 36:55Speaker 5: And and if you don't have books, you need books,
- 36:56Speaker 5: come talk to me. I'll get you some books. Sure,
- 36:58Speaker 5: gat you some fune books. I got some great books
- 37:00Speaker 5: that I that I think a classics and some fun
- 37:03Speaker 5: ones that are just And it's such a man, what
- 37:06Speaker 5: a great connector it is.
- 37:08Speaker 2: You're sending. You're literally sending a constant message to your
- 37:14Speaker 2: kid that you you not only love them, but you
- 37:18Speaker 2: care about them and that they are your priority. I
- 37:24Speaker 2: make sure that when Lily and I are two in
- 37:26Speaker 2: this that my cell phone is not even in the
- 37:29Speaker 2: same room. I don't even want her to see it.
- 37:31Speaker 2: I don't want to glance at it. I don't want
- 37:33Speaker 2: to be distracted by it. That it's got to be
- 37:36Speaker 2: one hundred percent focus.
- 37:38Speaker 5: Yeah, And I just think about kids learning, you know,
- 37:41Speaker 5: they when they've been read to and they're you know,
- 37:43Speaker 5: when they were a baby, when they were a toddler
- 37:45Speaker 5: to being a preschooler and they're being read to, and
- 37:48Speaker 5: their comfort level with books and letters and shapes and
- 37:50Speaker 5: you know, you can talk about the colors of things,
- 37:52Speaker 5: you can talk about the shapes of things, and and
- 37:54Speaker 5: the numbers and letters and how that will just help
- 37:57Speaker 5: them have such a better chance of succeeding in school.
- 38:00Speaker 4: And you know it's it starts early, you know, starts
- 38:03Speaker 4: starts right away of the kids forming.
- 38:05Speaker 5: Yeah, and I you know, I was, you know, I've
- 38:07Speaker 5: had talked with the number of dads about this also
- 38:10Speaker 5: about you know, when you know they're developing so much
- 38:13Speaker 5: language and the way we're doing things and the way
- 38:16Speaker 5: we have so much power to be creative when we're
- 38:18Speaker 5: reading and they're funny and be silly and be like,
- 38:20Speaker 5: you know, be a.
- 38:21Speaker 4: Big monster, be a little thing mouse. You know, like
- 38:23Speaker 4: you can do all these.
- 38:24Speaker 5: Things that really get kids thinking and being creative.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I mean that's when they're like, you know, they are
- 38:30Speaker 4: you know, like.
- 38:31Speaker 5: Sponge sponges taking in all that stuff, and we get
- 38:34Speaker 5: to be the ones to help them, you know, grow
- 38:36Speaker 5: in that way.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Like that's the power.
- 38:38Speaker 5: Of fatherhood is I'm just going to say specifically fathers
- 38:42Speaker 5: in this case. It's just how much we can be
- 38:44Speaker 5: We can be so animated and we have, you know,
- 38:47Speaker 5: have so much fun with our kids when we're reading
- 38:49Speaker 5: to them. And if you don't know how to read,
- 38:52Speaker 5: you can get a story. You can you don't have
- 38:53Speaker 5: to read the words. You can make up your own
- 38:55Speaker 5: that's even better almost to come up with your own story.
- 38:59Speaker 5: And and that's a lot of fun. And so and
- 39:01Speaker 5: if you don't have a book, guess what you can
- 39:03Speaker 5: tell a story.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Yeah, oh gosh, you know so much fun told so
- 39:08Speaker 2: many stories, scary stories.
- 39:12Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no those an't great. That's that's a fun
- 39:14Speaker 5: thing to do. And kids there, kids eat that up.
- 39:17Speaker 5: And you know it's like you say, hey, listen, if
- 39:19Speaker 5: we go up, yeah, we go up timnutes early.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Get off the screen and go up timidutes early and
- 39:23Speaker 4: we'll do a little We're gonna do it. We're gonna
- 39:25Speaker 4: do a story. I'll tell you a story. And what's
- 39:27Speaker 4: really fun.
- 39:28Speaker 5: As the kids get a little bit older, you can
- 39:29Speaker 5: have you can you can share the story. So I'll say,
- 39:32Speaker 5: you know, and then I was walking along the beach
- 39:34Speaker 5: and I found a Yeah, and your kiddo gets to
- 39:36Speaker 5: jump in and share that story. And so again their
- 39:39Speaker 5: mind is working and being creative. But it's that connection
- 39:42Speaker 5: with your kid, that that building that with them and
- 39:45Speaker 5: just you know, snuggling up and reading a book and
- 39:47Speaker 5: a little routine before bedtime gets them to calm down.
- 39:49Speaker 5: Like there's so many great benefits.
- 39:51Speaker 2: To that Josh Miller is my guest. This is Vermont
- 39:55Speaker 2: Fatherhood Fromontfatherhood dot org. Your your youngest is.
- 40:01Speaker 4: How old he is ten on the verge of eleven.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Ten years old? And your oldest is thirty four? All right,
- 40:08Speaker 2: So isn't that a fantastic vast spread of wisdom and
- 40:17Speaker 2: experience and knowledge that you bring to Vermont Fatherhood. I mean,
- 40:22Speaker 2: you're we're talking about all different ages here. You've got that, man,
- 40:27Speaker 2: that's that's that's really something else, that's really amazing. We've
- 40:32Speaker 2: got a comment here about setting timers for screen time.
- 40:38Speaker 2: We've also got a comment here saying, I've got two
- 40:41Speaker 2: teenage girls. At this point, I've accepted that I'll have
- 40:46Speaker 2: to reconnect with them when they're twenty. Uh you know, yeah, yeah,
- 40:54Speaker 2: there's listen, there's a couple of years that are coming
- 40:57Speaker 2: up here that everybody's telling me. I think you've told
- 41:00Speaker 2: me too. I mean, Lily's eleven. But just to buckle up,
- 41:06Speaker 2: get ready, thick in your skin a little bit.
- 41:10Speaker 5: I would say that that that's one angle. I would say, also,
- 41:14Speaker 5: just be present, you know, be tuned in. You know,
- 41:18Speaker 5: there's this there's this little thing that happens a little
- 41:19Speaker 5: bit of push.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Pull, even when they don't want.
- 41:21Speaker 5: You to be tuned given they don't want to and
- 41:23Speaker 5: and just you know, there's like not you know, like
- 41:25Speaker 5: you know, kids are kind of pushing us away, they're
- 41:27Speaker 5: being defiant, and they also want us to be there,
- 41:29Speaker 5: and I just I think it's important to be to
- 41:32Speaker 5: be there and be present, and we just get we
- 41:34Speaker 5: can get really distracted by our own busyness of life
- 41:37Speaker 5: and our own feelings that are going on, and our
- 41:39Speaker 5: own relationships and sometimes you know, our you know, our
- 41:42Speaker 5: kids are off in their world playing video games, they're
- 41:44Speaker 5: doing things.
- 41:44Speaker 4: But I think you know, yeah, yeah, give.
- 41:46Speaker 5: These these the early teenage years, like just kind of
- 41:49Speaker 5: trying to be tuned in there.
- 41:51Speaker 4: And again it's it's the.
- 41:52Speaker 5: Relationship of doing stuff with your kids and and spending
- 41:55Speaker 5: that time and and you know, creating I think we
- 41:58Speaker 5: talked about this a while ago, of just making sure
- 42:00Speaker 5: sure that that that sort of window or doorway of
- 42:03Speaker 5: conversation is still there, that you're talking about stuff and
- 42:05Speaker 5: you're saying, hey, how you doing.
- 42:06Speaker 4: Today, how is your day, how's it going? Oh, and
- 42:09Speaker 4: not necessarily.
- 42:10Speaker 5: Like you know, like whatever comes up, you know that
- 42:12Speaker 5: we just boom, we make a decision about it. How
- 42:14Speaker 5: do we ask questions? How do we be curious about
- 42:16Speaker 5: our kids? You know, what's going on with them?
- 42:18Speaker 4: And who you hanging out? Saho? Good question is you know, so,
- 42:21Speaker 4: how was your day? Fine? Right? Hey, who'd you sit
- 42:23Speaker 4: next to at lunch? Oh?
- 42:24Speaker 5: What'd you do in recess today? You know what was it?
- 42:27Speaker 5: You know what was you know what was it? You
- 42:28Speaker 5: know my kids pe? So you know what'd you do
- 42:31Speaker 5: in PE class today? Like you know, oh you were
- 42:33Speaker 5: in music today? Like just asking being curious about that,
- 42:36Speaker 5: and you know I'm saying this to you, and I'm
- 42:39Speaker 5: like saying, oh, yes, you can do that more often.
- 42:42Speaker 5: And I do ask my kids how they're doing, how
- 42:43Speaker 5: is their day? But I think we need to be
- 42:45Speaker 5: tuned into what's going on and not let them throw
- 42:48Speaker 5: their backpack on the on the thing and they go
- 42:50Speaker 5: up to their room for the next three hours.
- 42:52Speaker 4: Like we need to engage.
- 42:53Speaker 2: And wow, well said, And also maybe not take it
- 43:00Speaker 2: so personally if you say I was your day and
- 43:03Speaker 2: you get an eye roll.
- 43:06Speaker 3: In response.
- 43:08Speaker 5: While we were all that age once for sure, the
- 43:11Speaker 5: other thing is that to me if an eye roll
- 43:14Speaker 5: is like, oh, hey, what happened? Like that's almost to me,
- 43:17Speaker 5: it's an invitation. Oh aen eye roll, Like you're not
- 43:19Speaker 5: just saying fine and then walking away. You were literally
- 43:22Speaker 5: giving me a piece of information that says I should
- 43:24Speaker 5: know more about how your day was, you know, and
- 43:27Speaker 5: so and there is attitude. There is that, you know,
- 43:29Speaker 5: I mean, there is that that like, oh, I'm gonna,
- 43:31Speaker 5: you know, do this because some stuff is just uncomfortable
- 43:34Speaker 5: to talk about with anybody, let alone your dad.
- 43:36Speaker 4: I mean, give me a break if you have two
- 43:38Speaker 4: two teenage daughters and go.
- 43:40Speaker 5: But again having that, you know, I'm gonna rewind and say,
- 43:44Speaker 5: you know, early on having those conversations, continue to those
- 43:46Speaker 5: conversations so that way when the eye roll comes, I
- 43:49Speaker 5: gotta tell you about my day, dad, I gotta tell
- 43:51Speaker 5: you it sucked and this is what happened, as opposed
- 43:54Speaker 5: to you're like, oh fine, give me attitude. Yeah, go
- 43:58Speaker 5: to your room and then nothing happens there. Well, something
- 44:01Speaker 5: is happening, but you.
- 44:03Speaker 4: Know, the opportunity might be lost at that point.
- 44:06Speaker 2: And I've we've kind of learned both of us kind
- 44:10Speaker 2: of the hard way that.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Sometimes and I have the habit of.
- 44:17Speaker 2: As soon as I see Lily, how is your day
- 44:22Speaker 2: right off or in the evening, how is your day?
- 44:25Speaker 3: How is your day?
- 44:25Speaker 2: But if I discipline myself to kind of almost strategically
- 44:32Speaker 2: wait until the very very end of her day when
- 44:38Speaker 2: I'm tucking her in at night, that it's not just
- 44:42Speaker 2: a quick tuck in, kiss, lights out, good night, love
- 44:49Speaker 2: you see you tomorrow, but rather maybe planning out you know,
- 44:58Speaker 2: twenty minutes, fifteen minutes, half an hour, whatever to say,
- 45:06Speaker 2: how was your day?
- 45:07Speaker 3: Yeah? What was your day?
- 45:09Speaker 4: Like? Yeah, and asking specific questions is helpful.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Yeah, And if it was a crappy day, finding some
- 45:16Speaker 2: sliver in there of what was good about it? Was
- 45:19Speaker 2: there anything that was was good about your day? And
- 45:23Speaker 2: then maybe try to capitalize on that a little bit.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Yeah, No, that's that's great.
- 45:27Speaker 5: And I will say, you know, definitely bed time as
- 45:30Speaker 5: a time when sometimes kids kind of have let down
- 45:32Speaker 5: their guard and they can share stuff. Yeah, dinner time
- 45:35Speaker 5: is a great time to just get a pulse. And
- 45:37Speaker 5: you know, we have three kids at the house, so like,
- 45:40Speaker 5: you know, we do a little rose button thorn of
- 45:43Speaker 5: just you know, checking in about what was you know,
- 45:46Speaker 5: what was good?
- 45:47Speaker 4: What are you looking forward to?
- 45:48Speaker 5: And what's dunk you know, and so that's a way
- 45:52Speaker 5: to just kind of have a little inside and what
- 45:55Speaker 5: might be going on, like oh, you know, I don't
- 45:57Speaker 5: have a brose, I have two thorns actually, you know,
- 45:59Speaker 5: like that's the kind of thing where you know, you
- 46:02Speaker 5: can be like, oh, maybe there's more of a conversation
- 46:04Speaker 5: here and and so, but I think you're right, like
- 46:07Speaker 5: whatever the time is, whether when they walk in the door,
- 46:09Speaker 5: if you're home at that time, whether you're at dinner time,
- 46:12Speaker 5: whether it's like okay, after dinner time, hey let me
- 46:14Speaker 5: help me clean up, it's the time you're just you know,
- 46:16Speaker 5: maybe that's the time to do that, or you know,
- 46:19Speaker 5: finding those opportunities, but making sure that you have a
- 46:21Speaker 5: check in each day. And then when when when things
- 46:25Speaker 5: are really cool, your kid says that was your day,
- 46:29Speaker 5: you're like, yes, let me tell you.
- 46:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:32Speaker 2: And Lilya's done that too, And sometimes I have to
- 46:37Speaker 2: really think how I'm going to answer.
- 46:42Speaker 3: You know. The other thing and and.
- 46:46Speaker 2: I could talk to you all day, but we'll wrap
- 46:49Speaker 2: up here. The other thing that is is big for
- 46:56Speaker 2: it was a big moment for me is when I
- 47:02Speaker 2: learned kind of figured out that sometimes they just want
- 47:11Speaker 2: to tell you maybe how their day was or whatever,
- 47:17Speaker 2: and you need to frankly zip it and you don't
- 47:27Speaker 2: even have to nod your head as to say, oh yeah, yeah,
- 47:31Speaker 2: oh yeah, yeah, understand, understand, been there, done that yet.
- 47:35Speaker 2: And I've got a story for you, you know when
- 47:37Speaker 2: I was your age, papa. Sometimes they just don't want that.
- 47:45Speaker 2: They just want to purge a little bit and tell
- 47:48Speaker 2: you about something and not ask for your advice or
- 47:55Speaker 2: your suggestions or your story of relatability or whatever. They
- 47:59Speaker 2: just want to be heard. And it's so hard. But
- 48:02Speaker 2: sometimes it's like, as a dad, you need to just
- 48:08Speaker 2: listen and wrap up with.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Yeah, that sucks or that sucked.
- 48:17Speaker 4: Yeah, well you're going high level.
- 48:19Speaker 3: I don't I don't have any advice for you.
- 48:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll have to.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Think about this if you want me too. But that's
- 48:27Speaker 2: just Plaine sucks.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Wow.
- 48:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I think just just being there to listen, it's
- 48:33Speaker 5: a hard scale.
- 48:34Speaker 4: I'll be telling you just sitting there to listen.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Especially dad, you're supposed to fix everything.
- 48:38Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, there's a hero. Absolutely, you're gonna fix, You're
- 48:42Speaker 5: gonna save. You got the answers, you've got a great
- 48:44Speaker 5: story to tell. You're gonna pull away the thunder their
- 48:46Speaker 5: thunder and tell an even bigger story. We're really guilty
- 48:49Speaker 5: of that. And and uh, and I think that that's
- 48:53Speaker 5: really important to just to be able to listen and
- 48:56Speaker 5: even to ask questions like oh, tell me more about that,
- 48:58Speaker 5: or or what did you mean by that? And and
- 49:01Speaker 5: and I think to just listen without our mind wandering
- 49:03Speaker 5: into our own stories or to you know, yeh fix
