Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: Europe Correspondent on Ukraine hitting a bridge connecting Russia and the Crimean Peninsula
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now Gavin gray are UK europe correspondent, Good morning, given
- 0:03Speaker 1: hither right now Hurt Builders. This is the far right leader.
- 0:06Speaker 1: He's pulled out of the Dutch governments now collapsed.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yes, it was always a rather fractious coalition and what
- 0:15Speaker 2: had been going on was an increasing sort of a
- 0:18Speaker 2: split between those different government parties and I'm afraid many
- 0:23Speaker 2: were not surprised by what we're now getting. So we're
- 0:26Speaker 2: likely to get a snap election in the Netherlands. What
- 0:30Speaker 2: was happening was that the far right Dutch leader, Hurt
- 0:33Speaker 2: Builders put in ten additional asylum measures, that's what he
- 0:38Speaker 2: had asked for for the rest of the coalition to
- 0:40Speaker 2: vote for. That included a freeze on asylum applications, halting
- 0:44Speaker 2: the construction of reception centers, and limiting family reunification, by
- 0:49Speaker 2: which I mean one person gets into the Netherlands and
- 0:52Speaker 2: then they are allowed to invite the rest of their
- 0:54Speaker 2: family in. Now the others it seems we're never going
- 0:58Speaker 2: to agree to this. They didn't, and then Builders has
- 1:00Speaker 2: walked out and as the largest party, his anti immigration
- 1:04Speaker 2: far right PVV party has now left the coalition. That
- 1:08Speaker 2: looks very likely now we're going to get this snap election. Some, however,
- 1:12Speaker 2: critics are pointing to the fact that in opinion polls
- 1:15Speaker 2: the PBB party is losing support. Some would say, and
- 1:20Speaker 2: perhaps this is an attempt to gain that support back.
- 1:23Speaker 1: They're getting a little too close to the center for
- 1:25Speaker 1: the voters lacking. Let's go to Ukraine. I mean another
- 1:29Speaker 1: incredible military feat for them. They have blown up a
- 1:33Speaker 1: bridge connecting Russia and Crimea.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yes, so, just twenty four hours after the so called
- 1:39Speaker 2: Spider's Web operation in which one hundred smuggled drones hit
- 1:43Speaker 2: a third of Russia's bomber planes deep in the country,
- 1:46Speaker 2: today an attack on Crimea's Kirch Bridge. Now to be clear,
- 1:49Speaker 2: this is the bridge that connects Russia to Crimea, Crimea
- 1:53Speaker 2: which used to be part of Ukraine, and it is
- 1:57Speaker 2: absolutely hated. It's a hated symbol for Ukrainian The bridge
- 2:00Speaker 2: opened to much fanfare by Vladimir Putin in twenty eighteen,
- 2:04Speaker 2: and it has been attacked several times. In October three
- 2:07Speaker 2: years ago, a fire broke out on the bridge where
- 2:10Speaker 2: a truck loaded with a bomb exploded. In July twenty
- 2:14Speaker 2: twenty three, Vladimir Putin vowed to respond when two people
- 2:17Speaker 2: were killed when Ukraine hit the bridge with drones. Now
- 2:20Speaker 2: it would appear that some divers have attached underwater explosives
- 2:26Speaker 2: to the foundations. Their pretty dramatic footage has been circulated.
- 2:30Speaker 2: There was an initial explosion, there was a little bit
- 2:33Speaker 2: of assessment, and then Russia reopened it to Russian traffic,
- 2:37Speaker 2: which is instrumental incidentally in rearming and restocking supplies for
- 2:42Speaker 2: the attacking force in Ukraine. But no sooner had the
- 2:46Speaker 2: traffic been opened up again, there was another explosion, and
- 2:50Speaker 2: this one seemed to cause more damage. However, just said
- 2:52Speaker 2: that we now believe that the bridge is back reopen,
- 2:56Speaker 2: just hours after those two attacks on the foundations.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Gavin, thank you very much for that. Gavin Gray are
- 3:02Speaker 1: UKA Europe correspondent. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
