- 0:14Speaker 1: Hi Howing on a Monday Welcome to the program here
- 0:18Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred sign And before any
- 0:22Speaker 1: hard boiled, longtime, long worn fans get their hackles up
- 0:26Speaker 1: about me using the word howie, I know Texas A
- 0:31Speaker 1: and M.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Maggie's use it. They don't have a trademark on holie.
- 0:35Speaker 1: You can maybe with their logo and some merchandise or stuff,
- 0:39Speaker 1: but you can say how do You could say Hi?
- 0:42Speaker 1: That's why I said high end, how do you both?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Welcome to the program. You're on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 0:46Speaker 1: hundred the Zone on a Monday afternoon.
- 0:49Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way. Thank you much, very much
- 0:51Speaker 2: for joining us.
- 0:52Speaker 1: The producer is Jay Herman, and we've got several things
- 0:56Speaker 1: coming up on the program. First and foremost here in
- 0:59Speaker 1: a few minutes, working continue our SEC football previews, we
- 1:03Speaker 1: were visiting with every single play by play voice in
- 1:06Speaker 1: the Southeastern Conference. It started week before last, went Monday
- 1:11Speaker 1: through Friday, then all of last week and this week.
- 1:13Speaker 1: We have five remaining Ole Miss Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma, and
- 1:18Speaker 1: Texas A and M. And the play by play voices
- 1:21Speaker 1: of those five schools will be joining us this week.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Today it'll be David Kellam, the play by play voice
- 1:26Speaker 1: of the Old Miss Rebels. He'll join us coming up
- 1:29Speaker 1: here in a few minutes, and we're going to give
- 1:33Speaker 1: away three more copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:36Speaker 1: We do that each hour of the program week before, last,
- 1:40Speaker 1: last week, and this week, so three copies one per
- 1:43Speaker 1: hour throughout the course of this final week of those giveaways.
- 1:47Speaker 2: But before we get to those.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Things, there's two topics we need to get to there.
- 1:52Speaker 1: There's we're going to get to the AP pole which
- 1:54Speaker 1: has come out and just so you'll know, SPI Texas
- 1:57Speaker 1: number five in the AP Pole, and we're to get
- 2:00Speaker 1: to that. But over the weekend, the Dallas Cowboys won
- 2:05Speaker 1: a preseason game. Yes I know, preseason, but they won
- 2:08Speaker 1: their preseason opener and Scotty Scheffler back in the win
- 2:12Speaker 1: column for the first time since January and won it
- 2:15Speaker 1: going away, won by eight shots, hammering the field there
- 2:19Speaker 1: at the FedEx Saint Jude Classic there, so he's on
- 2:23Speaker 1: you might say, the home stretch of winning another FedEx Cup.
- 2:26Speaker 1: So when it comes to the Cowboys, when it comes
- 2:29Speaker 1: to Scotty Scheffler or the PGA tour as a whole.
- 2:31Speaker 2: We have to ask Cameron Parker to join the program
- 2:34Speaker 2: just for a moment. Let me start with the Cowboys.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Did you last year have you lifted your boycott of
- 2:40Speaker 1: not watching the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Was that just one year suspension that you did? No?
- 2:45Speaker 3: No.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I think the deal was Craig, that I would not
- 2:50Speaker 4: watch the Cowboys full game in my fandom would not
- 2:54Speaker 4: resume until they made the conference championship game.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I think that was the deal.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah, But there's a difference between fandom and than just
- 3:00Speaker 1: watching them.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I consider it the same thing, really.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yeah, even as even as a as a displaced person
- 3:10Speaker 1: with suspended fan support that it also includes even watching
- 3:15Speaker 1: them on television.
- 3:17Speaker 4: I think there may be a game last year late
- 3:19Speaker 4: in the season, Washington game Washington that was crazy back
- 3:23Speaker 4: and forth that I did watch, and that was more
- 3:26Speaker 4: for you know, entertainment purposes. But I think they open
- 3:30Speaker 4: the season what New York right Thursday. I will not
- 3:32Speaker 4: be on a Sunday night. Sunday night, I will not
- 3:34Speaker 4: be watching No Offense to Mike tree Kill and Chris Collinsworth.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I will not be watching. Okay, So if you ask
- 3:41Speaker 4: me Monday morning to come in top of the Cowboys, Craig,
- 3:43Speaker 4: I I'll have nothing for you.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I have nothing. Yeah, but you're following online, you're reading
- 3:49Speaker 2: I am bruising Twitter. I am bruising Twitter.
- 3:52Speaker 4: And of course we do carry the Cowboys right here
- 3:54Speaker 4: on ninety eight one kvet. So you know I am
- 3:56Speaker 4: listening to Brad and Babe making sure we're on the air.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Course.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Yes, you know I love their broadcast team, but watching it.
- 4:05Speaker 4: The whole reasoning for this was because, you know, every
- 4:09Speaker 4: year as a Cowboys fan, you know it feels like
- 4:11Speaker 4: this time right now training camp. You know, Jerry's doing
- 4:16Speaker 4: his press conferences. Every Cowboys reporter is, you know, live
- 4:20Speaker 4: tweeting every single touchdown thrown by Dak Prescott, every catch
- 4:24Speaker 4: from CD Lamb, all the great types of plays. All
- 4:26Speaker 4: of a sudden, you buy yourself in and then you
- 4:29Speaker 4: spend five hours every Sunday devoted to this team, thinking
- 4:33Speaker 4: that maybe they'll get over the hump, Craig. And then
- 4:35Speaker 4: you get to the first round of the playoffs and
- 4:37Speaker 4: you get smacked by Green Bay or Los Angeles or
- 4:40Speaker 4: San Francisco, and it's like I just wasted eighteen nineteen
- 4:44Speaker 4: weeks devoted to this Cowboys team that has the same
- 4:48Speaker 4: problems every year, and Jerry Jones refuses to acknowledge that. Now,
- 4:52Speaker 4: I'll give you this after having what the worst defense
- 4:56Speaker 4: in modern NFL history. Yeah, the Christian Parker, which I
- 5:00Speaker 4: think came from from Brian Schottenheimer. And by the way,
- 5:03Speaker 4: I think Jerry kind of lucked into Schottenheimer because you
- 5:06Speaker 4: wanted McCarthy to come back, and I think McCarthy was,
- 5:09Speaker 4: you know what, I'm out of the circus and kind
- 5:11Speaker 4: of lucked in the Schottenheimer, who I think is going
- 5:13Speaker 4: to make a great head coach. And I think the
- 5:16Speaker 4: Christian Parker hire so far seems to be solid. But
- 5:19Speaker 4: of course we haven't played any meaningful football yet. So
- 5:22Speaker 4: that's the reason why Craig was just I was just
- 5:24Speaker 4: tired of devoting so much time on my Sundays to
- 5:28Speaker 4: this Cowboys seem to kept letting me down. So if
- 5:30Speaker 4: you want to call me fake fan, that's fine. I
- 5:33Speaker 4: consider myself apathetic. But we also talked about this too
- 5:36Speaker 4: that I think you've asked me before. The Cowboys won
- 5:39Speaker 4: a Super Bowl, which you feel fulfilled, and I told you,
- 5:42Speaker 4: I don't think I could even enjoy it because of
- 5:44Speaker 4: how frustrated.
- 5:45Speaker 2: It's spent as a Cowboys fan in just my lifetime.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Well, I understand it. And I was like that for
- 5:51Speaker 1: a long time as a Rams fan until I finally won,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and then you know, and then they had a bleak
- 5:56Speaker 1: period for a long time, and then of late obviously
- 5:59Speaker 1: there has been good in terms of getting the pieces
- 6:02Speaker 1: in place, and Sean McVay is a really good coach.
- 6:05Speaker 1: So it's a lot easier to be a fan in
- 6:07Speaker 1: happier times. I will grant you that. Okay, PGA Tour
- 6:12Speaker 1: Scotty Scheffler looked like the Scotty He was so.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Dominant last year and for folks, she said, boy he
- 6:17Speaker 2: had down here.
- 6:18Speaker 1: He's only one one time had five second place finishes,
- 6:21Speaker 1: what three in a row, which was a PGA Tour record.
- 6:24Speaker 1: There was no second place finish yesterday. He blew away
- 6:27Speaker 1: the field, a good field that had some contenders and
- 6:29Speaker 1: he blew us. So I think Trevor immermm was asked
- 6:34Speaker 1: could he be dominant the rest of the way, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: he said absolutely. When he says some of the things
- 6:37Speaker 1: he's saying, and he's doing hitting shots the way he's
- 6:40Speaker 1: The thing I noticed is he's hitting Fairway shots a
- 6:42Speaker 1: lot better than he was earlier.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly obviously putting You're exactly right, Craig.
- 6:47Speaker 4: His iron play has gotten better than it was mill
- 6:50Speaker 4: of season and this putting was lights out yesterday. It
- 6:54Speaker 4: felt like anything from ten to fifteen feet, whether it
- 6:56Speaker 4: was for Birdie Parr, he was going to make it.
- 6:59Speaker 4: I think he's to run away with this. You know,
- 7:01Speaker 4: he struggled a little bit at Atlanta at the Tour Championship.
- 7:04Speaker 4: I don't think that course really fits his game that well.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Bell Reeve next week, which is or this week, which
- 7:09Speaker 4: is where the PJ was at in what twenty I
- 7:13Speaker 4: was it eighteen when Bruce Kepta won uh held off
- 7:16Speaker 4: tiger Woods.
- 7:17Speaker 2: That course sets up very well for Sky.
- 7:20Speaker 4: So I think he wins this week, and I think
- 7:24Speaker 4: he wins the Tour Championship as well, and that would
- 7:26Speaker 4: be as what second FedEx Cup, third FedEx Cup Championship?
- 7:30Speaker 2: Not sure back to back? Right? Did he win it
- 7:33Speaker 2: last year? I don't think so. Did he win it
- 7:35Speaker 2: last year? I don't remember.
- 7:36Speaker 4: You think it's you know again, it's like, does anybody
- 7:39Speaker 4: really care about the Tour Championship? He doesn't care. Roy
- 7:42Speaker 4: McRoy eight over par for the tournament. I don't think
- 7:46Speaker 4: he knew he was even playing in it, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 4: he was, he still faded from his weekend in Abiza
- 7:51Speaker 4: a week ago.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And I feel bad for Jordan Speed, who opened with
- 7:54Speaker 1: a sixty five and he looked like he might get
- 7:56Speaker 1: inside that cup line of fifty to get to go
- 7:59Speaker 1: to Saint Louis and what fifty second.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I think he was just a couple of spots out
- 8:02Speaker 2: of it.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Yeah, he was, he needed to get the seven under par,
- 8:05Speaker 4: and just just too many costly mistakes, and that's kind of,
- 8:08Speaker 4: you know, summed up Spef's last couple of season is
- 8:11Speaker 4: where he'll have it for brief stretches, and he still
- 8:14Speaker 4: has that terrible hole. I mean, he hit it in
- 8:17Speaker 4: the water at least once yesterday, hit hit his t
- 8:22Speaker 4: shot and a part three under the bridge ended up
- 8:24Speaker 4: making bogie from there. Just little mistakes that over the
- 8:28Speaker 4: course of a season really add up to what's been
- 8:31Speaker 4: the kind of a microcosm of Space's career lately. Coming
- 8:35Speaker 4: up just Shy Pierson Coody two, who I think he's
- 8:37Speaker 4: been dealing with some he I don't think he's one
- 8:38Speaker 4: hundred percent healthy right now. A few spots shy, but yeah,
- 8:42Speaker 4: Scotty's in line for I think running away with the
- 8:45Speaker 4: with the FedEx Cup season.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Fleetwood last year.
- 8:50Speaker 4: That's right, Scotty either in I think Hovelin May won
- 8:54Speaker 4: it in twenty four to twenty three, and then Scotty
- 8:56Speaker 4: won it one of those other years.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Yeah, so we may only have it one ones, right,
- 9:00Speaker 2: Jake check on that? Okays one?
- 9:03Speaker 1: And and you mentioned Belle Reeve, Gary player won his
- 9:06Speaker 1: one US Open nineteen sixty five at bell Okay, Uh,
- 9:10Speaker 1: it's it's one of those historic golf courses.
- 9:12Speaker 4: But you say it sets up well for Yeah, it
- 9:14Speaker 4: does just the ones. Yeah, I think it's twice. Yeah,
- 9:18Speaker 4: if it sets up well for him. And honestly, not
- 9:20Speaker 4: many courses you know, don't set up off for Scotty.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And I think now.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Out of the out of the current PJ Tour stops
- 9:28Speaker 4: and this may change, you know, once they swapped to
- 9:31Speaker 4: the tour the two tour level in two years. I
- 9:34Speaker 4: think Scotty's only has not won only I think five
- 9:38Speaker 4: or six courses currently on the tour.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I mean think about that, correct.
- 9:41Speaker 4: I mean it reminds me of like a NASCAR when
- 9:44Speaker 4: at one point Jeff Gordon had won I think at
- 9:46Speaker 4: every single track except for Kentucky, and Kentucky had just
- 9:49Speaker 4: come on to the scene. It's like that, that's crazy
- 9:51Speaker 4: to think about that he's had success at every single
- 9:54Speaker 4: every single track. And the same thing for Scotty is
- 9:57Speaker 4: a lot of golfers, well, they set up well on
- 10:00Speaker 4: Pola Greens, but you know Bermuda, they struggle or vice
- 10:03Speaker 4: first or you know, they're better at this part of
- 10:06Speaker 4: the country versus that. For Scotty, doesn't matter where it's at.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Put him on the course, give him a golf always
- 10:12Speaker 4: going to find a way to win. And in the
- 10:14Speaker 4: courses he hasn't won at like Houston, He's finished runner
- 10:17Speaker 4: up at Charles Swap pretty sure, he's been a runner
- 10:19Speaker 4: up there.
- 10:20Speaker 2: So I don't even think he's played at Greensboro. Has he?
- 10:22Speaker 4: I don't think so either, because it's always been the
- 10:24Speaker 4: week before and he's already usually number one or number
- 10:28Speaker 4: between the FedEx Cups, So he hasn't played there yet,
- 10:30Speaker 4: and I think he would do well there. That course
- 10:32Speaker 4: sets up well for him. But again you know the sounding,
- 10:34Speaker 4: you know, repetitive. Every course seemed to set up well
- 10:37Speaker 4: for Scotty chefferin all right, quick final question, where do
- 10:40Speaker 4: the Cowboys play this week?
- 10:42Speaker 2: I do not know that's true.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I was checking your lack of fan not know they
- 10:47Speaker 1: play the Arizona Cardinal Saturday night, nine o'clock if you
- 10:50Speaker 1: want to what?
- 10:51Speaker 2: Okay, I think I'm gonna skip there.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Mark Henry of course the morning kickoff now at six am,
- 10:57Speaker 4: was talking about Joe Milton, and that's when I thought,
- 10:59Speaker 4: maybe it's time for me to go back to bed.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I think they're gonna win the division this year. You're
- 11:05Speaker 2: out before it starts.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm in Okay, you're completely out in Philadelphia.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I'm not completely yet. I just think it'll
- 11:13Speaker 5: be closed and maybe Dallas gets them by a game.
- 11:15Speaker 4: How the roles of think about it's changed, Craig. You
- 11:18Speaker 4: give a producer who now thinks they're going to win
- 11:20Speaker 4: the division, and for me, I just refuse to watch
- 11:23Speaker 4: the Cowboy Jason Commanders sort of say all the while
- 11:26Speaker 4: was a commander's face.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Commander's commander.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Season's over, so lright, that's Cameron Parker up next. We'll
- 11:33Speaker 1: continue our SEC previews, will visit with David Kellum play
- 11:37Speaker 1: by play voice of the Old Miss Rebels.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the zone.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Why not on a Monday roll back with a well
- 11:48Speaker 1: the real banger, Mississippi Queen. It's perfect because it goes
- 11:52Speaker 1: right into our SEC football previews.
- 11:56Speaker 2: We've continued.
- 11:57Speaker 1: We started it a week before, laugh went all the
- 12:00Speaker 1: way through and then last week and this is the
- 12:03Speaker 1: final week. And we've been really blessed and privileged to
- 12:07Speaker 1: be joined by the play by play voices of each
- 12:09Speaker 1: of the Southeastern Conference schools, and that includes our next guest,
- 12:14Speaker 1: one of you might say, one of the most decorated
- 12:17Speaker 1: and senior members of our crew. It's the good Man
- 12:22Speaker 1: that is David Kellen, play by play voice of the
- 12:24Speaker 1: old Miss Rebels, who we have to start off with
- 12:27Speaker 1: by wishing a happy anniversary. I was told that you
- 12:32Speaker 1: and your wonderful bride Mary have been married how many years?
- 12:36Speaker 6: DK, A bunch man A forty six years? That was
- 12:40Speaker 6: a very appropriate psalm, Miss Hippy Queen.
- 12:42Speaker 2: By the way, Yes, I had it all.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Yeah, forty six years.
- 12:45Speaker 6: Were high school sweethearts, so we've known each other for
- 12:47Speaker 6: a lot longer than that.
- 12:48Speaker 2: And she's gone.
- 12:49Speaker 6: I tell everybody she's my better four fifths h and
- 12:53Speaker 6: I just advise you, if you've been married that long,
- 12:55Speaker 6: you need to, you know, change that from better half
- 12:57Speaker 6: to a better percentage towards your wife, that's for sure.
- 13:00Speaker 6: But yeah, we've been together a long time.
- 13:02Speaker 2: That is great.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And I got a chance to meet her during baseball
- 13:05Speaker 1: and she's a wonderful lady as well, So that is
- 13:08Speaker 1: that's that's tremendous, and congratulations on that.
- 13:14Speaker 2: When we go into the off season.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Or as we prepared to emerge from a college football
- 13:22Speaker 1: off season and get ready for a brand new school,
- 13:26Speaker 1: how many years has this been for you?
- 13:28Speaker 2: Now you've been at it a bit there.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Yeah, this will be my thirty ninth year for football,
- 13:33Speaker 6: which is kind of crazy. I started Craig right out
- 13:36Speaker 6: of high school when I was a freshman old Miss
- 13:38Speaker 6: Colling baseball, So I was eighteen years old.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I keep telling me I started was eighteen's. Everybody thinks
- 13:42Speaker 2: I'm ninety.
- 13:43Speaker 6: Something, but I'm getting on up there, long in the
- 13:45Speaker 6: tooth at sixty seven.
- 13:46Speaker 2: But you know, it's really weird in our league.
- 13:49Speaker 6: Years ago, you had John Ward at Tennessee, you know,
- 13:52Speaker 6: Munson was at Georgia. On and on it went, just
- 13:56Speaker 6: these incredible announcers. Crystal was at State when I came
- 14:00Speaker 6: Amen and Wes Durham, who now calls for Fox, was
- 14:04Speaker 6: at Vanderbilt at the time. We were in this meeting
- 14:06Speaker 6: with all these guys, and he looked over to me
- 14:07Speaker 6: and he said, are you intimidated?
- 14:09Speaker 2: I said, yeah, big time.
- 14:11Speaker 6: And of course you know, Wes is dad's legendary announcer
- 14:13Speaker 6: too at North Carolina in Woody Durham.
- 14:17Speaker 2: But now I'm that guy. So it's kind of weird,
- 14:19Speaker 2: to say the least.
- 14:20Speaker 6: But I still feel very young at heart, and I've
- 14:23Speaker 6: just seen some incredible things throughout the years, not only
- 14:26Speaker 6: in the SEC, but some of the teams we played
- 14:30Speaker 6: outside of the league as well. But I've done football, basketball,
- 14:32Speaker 6: and baseball in some form of fashion, women's hoops since
- 14:36Speaker 6: nineteen seventy eight basically, and I gave up men's basketball
- 14:41Speaker 6: this past year. The overlap kind of got big on us,
- 14:43Speaker 6: and we were very fortunate to have Gary Darby in
- 14:46Speaker 6: our area, who I hired and worked.
- 14:48Speaker 2: With for years.
- 14:48Speaker 6: He'd moved back in here and instead of filling in
- 14:51Speaker 6: for me, we decided to let him to do.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Hoops, and so he's doing hoops now.
- 14:54Speaker 6: So I've slowed down a tad, but really excited about
- 14:59Speaker 6: the upcoming season. Get things rolling again. I'm not working
- 15:01Speaker 6: as much as you. I mean, were you ever at home?
- 15:03Speaker 2: When do you go home?
- 15:07Speaker 1: Summertimes, they're a little slower, gets a little busier once
- 15:11Speaker 1: we ramp up, you know, but once we get on
- 15:13Speaker 1: into September.
- 15:14Speaker 2: I totally agree with you on that.
- 15:16Speaker 1: And by the way, having grown up in North Carolina,
- 15:18Speaker 1: I grew up idolizing Woody Durham. He was, Yeah, he
- 15:21Speaker 1: was wonderful. And I told him that when I met
- 15:24Speaker 1: him years later. I think when Texas was playing North Carolina,
- 15:28Speaker 1: like I think it was a year they won the
- 15:30Speaker 1: national title, ninety three, ninety two, ninety three season, and
- 15:32Speaker 1: I told him in Charlotte and he goes, you really
- 15:36Speaker 1: need to set your sights a little higher, you know
- 15:39Speaker 1: that sort of thing.
- 15:41Speaker 2: So what a great guy. And when he.
- 15:43Speaker 6: Retired, Wes Wes called me and he said, hey, look,
- 15:46Speaker 6: I know this is a weird request, but dad and
- 15:49Speaker 6: mom want to come to the grove.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I said, really, And he made a great point.
- 15:53Speaker 6: I'd never called a game from North Carolina, which is
- 15:56Speaker 6: weird you would think across the league. But I'd never
- 15:58Speaker 6: called a game well, would he never called him from
- 16:00Speaker 6: Old Miss, and of course he goes back further than me.
- 16:03Speaker 6: And so we had this team doctors in North Carolina
- 16:05Speaker 6: grad and he set him up in a cabin. We
- 16:07Speaker 6: put him on a pregame show and before he passed away,
- 16:10Speaker 6: and his wonderful wife came down to Oxford and just
- 16:12Speaker 6: did the Grove routine and it was part of our
- 16:15Speaker 6: pregame show. It was such an honor and privilege for
- 16:18Speaker 6: us to get to see him in that capacity after
- 16:20Speaker 6: he had retired from North Carolina.
- 16:22Speaker 2: It's pretty cool. That is awesome, all right.
- 16:25Speaker 1: So David Callum's running US play by play voice of
- 16:27Speaker 1: the Old Miss Rebels. Let me start with what I
- 16:30Speaker 1: think had to be one of the most dynamic and
- 16:34Speaker 1: I will add the word unusual seasons in college football.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Last year Old Miss winning thirteen ball games, getting to
- 16:41Speaker 1: the Final four, and losing its head coach. As we
- 16:44Speaker 1: all know during the course of this end, I thought
- 16:47Speaker 1: Pete Golden did a fabulous job of shepherding things through.
- 16:50Speaker 1: And now he gets ready to take it on in
- 16:52Speaker 1: his first full season. I'm not sure your overview of
- 16:55Speaker 1: how that all went down the stretch as you get
- 16:58Speaker 1: ready to lead in the twenty twenty six.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Well, it was wild and a combination of things. I mean,
- 17:04Speaker 6: my relationship with Lane was very, very good, and I'd say,
- 17:07Speaker 6: you know, pretty decent now too. He's he was a
- 17:10Speaker 6: fantastic coach for US, brilliant offensive mind. And you know,
- 17:13Speaker 6: regardless if you want to blame it on the scheduling
- 17:16Speaker 6: or you know, leaving for what he thinks is a
- 17:19Speaker 6: better situation, the bottom line was leaving a playoff team
- 17:22Speaker 6: kind of threw me for a loop. I thought that
- 17:24Speaker 6: was kind of strange, but nonetheless it worked out great.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Pete did a fantastic job.
- 17:30Speaker 6: There's always been the debate if if Lane had been
- 17:32Speaker 6: able to coach through and that's just not going to happen.
- 17:35Speaker 6: That would be you know, for those fans out there
- 17:37Speaker 6: that are A and M and Texas fans, you know
- 17:40Speaker 6: that you're not going to let the A and M.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Future coach finish out the seasons, you know that kind
- 17:43Speaker 2: of thing.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Yeah, uh, and so the rivalry just that was not
- 17:47Speaker 6: going to be allowed. And I thought, I'm like you,
- 17:49Speaker 6: Pete at a fantastic job. Beat Georgia played Georgia straight
- 17:53Speaker 6: up in the Sugar Bowl. I'm not so sure Lane
- 17:55Speaker 6: would have done that. Lane they have you know, had
- 17:57Speaker 6: a different style and struggled with that game. Who knows
- 17:59Speaker 6: how that would have come out. But to get to
- 18:01Speaker 6: it's basically a play away from making it to the
- 18:03Speaker 6: national championship with all of that turmoil going on, was
- 18:07Speaker 6: really really cool. But we were very, very talented. They
- 18:09Speaker 6: had a fantastic team and a lot of those key
- 18:11Speaker 6: pieces are going to be back.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Forth this year. Oh and started quarterback.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Let me start with Trinidad because uh, not only was
- 18:18Speaker 1: he fabulous last year, but then to to understand the
- 18:24Speaker 1: legal battle that was they had and went through and
- 18:26Speaker 1: charged for it and got that extra year of eligibility.
- 18:29Speaker 2: That's had to be a big relief.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Not only for coach Colding, but really for Old Miss
- 18:32Speaker 1: Nation overall to see their leader, their quarterback is going
- 18:36Speaker 1: to be a senior and clearly a Heisman Trophy candidate
- 18:39Speaker 1: as well. Taking the snaps. Yeah, it's a it's a
- 18:43Speaker 1: weird world.
- 18:43Speaker 6: You gotta love, you know, the sports world where we
- 18:46Speaker 6: came He came in here last year. Craig and Harry Harrison,
- 18:49Speaker 6: our color commentator on the network. Now, so let's go
- 18:52Speaker 6: over to the offense. We would practice. So let's go
- 18:54Speaker 6: on to the offensive side and and see about this
- 18:56Speaker 6: backup quarterback. You know, something should happen to Austin Simmons,
- 19:00Speaker 6: would he be capable of running the show? And we
- 19:02Speaker 6: go over there and watch him, and he makes a
- 19:04Speaker 6: great sideline outpass and breaks and runs for a little bit,
- 19:07Speaker 6: hits a deep ball and we both said, yeah, he'll
- 19:09Speaker 6: be okay, Okay, Well, Simmons does get hurt. He ends
- 19:14Speaker 6: up having an unbelievable year, and so he's making a
- 19:18Speaker 6: whole lot more money this time around than he did
- 19:19Speaker 6: at the beginning of last season. But he's a great kid,
- 19:22Speaker 6: wonderful you know, individual, in addition to being a tremendous talent.
- 19:28Speaker 2: So we're very fortunate to have him back.
- 19:30Speaker 6: And we got Lacey back in the backfield with him too,
- 19:34Speaker 6: So that's going to be really cool, one two punch
- 19:36Speaker 6: to have back in the offense.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to ask you about Lacey and
- 19:40Speaker 1: the fact, I mean, he's obviously the bell Cowvin it
- 19:42Speaker 1: comes to run in the football for them, and really
- 19:46Speaker 1: and truly I think also having some veterans back on
- 19:49Speaker 1: your offensive line certainly helps as well.
- 19:50Speaker 2: The then, right, we got the three interior guys.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Back.
- 19:55Speaker 6: Teres Davis will be at left tackle for US, and
- 19:57Speaker 6: he had pretty much won the position, or at least
- 20:00Speaker 6: was gonna be in the mix going into the last
- 20:02Speaker 6: season transferred from Maryland, but he got hurt in the
- 20:05Speaker 6: very last scrimmage before we started the season, so he
- 20:08Speaker 6: missed the year, basically didn't get to play a lot.
- 20:10Speaker 6: And he's back and we'll be at left tackle. It's
- 20:13Speaker 6: still kind of working on the right tackle thing. But
- 20:15Speaker 6: I think, you know, without getting too much coach speak
- 20:17Speaker 6: and throwing a bunch of names at you, defensive line,
- 20:20Speaker 6: we're gonna have more depth. We've improved in the linebacker
- 20:23Speaker 6: corps a good bit. Defensive backfield also picked up some
- 20:27Speaker 6: extra pieces there. And on the offensive side, you know,
- 20:30Speaker 6: totally new receiving room kind of with some really good
- 20:33Speaker 6: talent there as well. And just having watched some practice,
- 20:37Speaker 6: I think we're gonna be fine, but you know, it's
- 20:39Speaker 6: really weird, Gray. I think this team is gonna be
- 20:41Speaker 6: better in a lot of ways, but the schedule's tougher too,
- 20:45Speaker 6: and you know, you know this league, you can't just
- 20:47Speaker 6: start checking off wins, so it's interesting. It could be
- 20:50Speaker 6: a better team than the one last year. But the
- 20:51Speaker 6: schedule is gonna make it a difficult run. But who
- 20:55Speaker 6: knows who's gonna merge out of the league. But I
- 20:56Speaker 6: do feel good about the position we're.
- 20:58Speaker 1: In going in. Yeah, And I would say also, it
- 21:02Speaker 1: looks like the back seven for you for your defense
- 21:07Speaker 1: with all that veteran leadership returning, could make a real
- 21:10Speaker 1: big difference.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Right, No doubt.
- 21:13Speaker 6: Echols in the middle is where you start, and he's
- 21:15Speaker 6: just a fantastic player. I think he'd potentially be a
- 21:18Speaker 6: first round pick coming out of this season. And you know,
- 21:22Speaker 6: you know how it is you get if you got
- 21:23Speaker 6: the depth and the pressure on the defensive front, boy,
- 21:26Speaker 6: that solves a lot of problems and really takes some
- 21:30Speaker 6: heat off of your linebackers and your defensive backs.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And so we had a really really good rotation there.
- 21:35Speaker 6: Two years ago in twenty four, we were running about
- 21:37Speaker 6: nine defensive linemen at Old Miss.
- 21:39Speaker 2: We've never been able to do that.
- 21:40Speaker 6: That's one of the things that portal has helped our
- 21:43Speaker 6: program get better, as you're able to get the depth
- 21:45Speaker 6: that you need. And then last year we didn't have
- 21:47Speaker 6: quite as much, and so we'd.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Faded a little bit late.
- 21:50Speaker 6: But Nonetheless, I think we're back to having a good
- 21:53Speaker 6: rotation about eight or nine defensive lineman.
- 21:56Speaker 1: David Kellen, play by play voice of the Ole Miss Rebels,
- 21:58Speaker 1: joined us here for a couple more minute. I've asked
- 22:01Speaker 1: every guy with whom we visit in this league about
- 22:04Speaker 1: the nine game conference schedule. In the case of Old Miss,
- 22:09Speaker 1: I think it's rather intriguing because you know, in the past,
- 22:12Speaker 1: we've been able to say, Okay, there's like three games
- 22:17Speaker 1: before you got conference playing. Then you'd have the late
- 22:19Speaker 1: season game and you have the late season non conference
- 22:21Speaker 1: game against Watford, but there'd be three weeks to warm up.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Now it's only two weeks to warm up because of
- 22:27Speaker 1: the ninth conference game and the first run out of
- 22:29Speaker 1: the gate that Sunday game a Labor Day weekend against Louisville.
- 22:33Speaker 2: It looks like the Rebels we have to hit the
- 22:34Speaker 2: ground running on this. Yeah, no doubt.
- 22:37Speaker 6: I was looking at the top twenty five this morning, Craig,
- 22:39Speaker 6: and we're playing like six of the top twenty five teams,
- 22:41Speaker 6: including Louisville. It's like twenty fourth in the nation. So
- 22:46Speaker 6: it's a former little schedule to say the least. But
- 22:49Speaker 6: my thoughts about the nine From a fan standpoint, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 6: I think you'd rather see an SEC matchup another one
- 22:56Speaker 6: as opposed to maybe some of the cupcake matchups that
- 22:59Speaker 6: you might get. I get the coaches point two, though,
- 23:02Speaker 6: I think if the playoff had been expanded this time
- 23:05Speaker 6: around a little bit, we wouldn't even be having the
- 23:06Speaker 6: conversation because you feel comfortable that, you know, a nine
- 23:09Speaker 6: and three SEC team probably would get into an expanded playoff.
- 23:14Speaker 2: But it's gonna be interesting at the end of the
- 23:16Speaker 2: year to.
- 23:16Speaker 6: See because we may have several in our league that
- 23:19Speaker 6: could be nine and three. Well how does that compare
- 23:21Speaker 6: to an eleven one from somewhere else or ten and
- 23:25Speaker 6: two from some other conference.
- 23:26Speaker 2: So it's gonna be interesting to see.
- 23:27Speaker 6: But I think just going to the game, you know,
- 23:29Speaker 6: I kind of like the journey. If you're going to
- 23:32Speaker 6: games this year, you get an extra SEC game to
- 23:34Speaker 6: go see. For those of us that are hosting five games,
- 23:38Speaker 6: I think that's going to be cool too.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mentioned this.
- 23:42Speaker 1: I was on a show with some folks in Arkansas
- 23:44Speaker 1: this morning and they asked me about it, and I said,
- 23:47Speaker 1: and I think somebody made this comment last week as well.
- 23:51Speaker 2: That was on this show, one of the play by
- 23:52Speaker 2: play guys.
- 23:53Speaker 1: That fans and even the media probably really enjoy the
- 23:58Speaker 1: thought of that ninth game. And like you said, I
- 24:00Speaker 1: can understand where the coaches come down on this, and
- 24:03Speaker 1: I think the key on this thing is you just
- 24:06Speaker 1: kind of alluded to, is I think folks would rather
- 24:09Speaker 1: see if it was a Vanderbilt or a Mississippi State
- 24:14Speaker 1: or a Missouri whatever as an extra opponent on the
- 24:18Speaker 1: schedule than playing someone. To borrow the phrase from our
- 24:22Speaker 1: women's basketball coach here in Austin, Vick SHAEF three named
- 24:26Speaker 1: Directional State University, you know that kind of thing.
- 24:30Speaker 2: So it.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Really does, I think, add more value for the fan
- 24:37Speaker 1: who's buying the ticket. Whether you have a high profile
- 24:41Speaker 1: non conference game at home or not in a given year,
- 24:44Speaker 1: you know you've got a quality opponent coming in in that.
- 24:47Speaker 6: Place, right exactly. And I see both sides of it,
- 24:52Speaker 6: but I kind of lean towards the fan side. I
- 24:56Speaker 6: think the you know, the difference of having five home
- 24:59Speaker 6: games four home games is not.
- 25:01Speaker 2: A cool thing, for sure.
- 25:04Speaker 6: You know, we're fortunate we got to come to Texas
- 25:06Speaker 6: and Oklahoma again where we won last year. But you
- 25:09Speaker 6: can't guarantee that to happen again by any means. So
- 25:12Speaker 6: we've got some really difficult games to deal with. But
- 25:15Speaker 6: those that have got to go out on the road
- 25:18Speaker 6: five times in the league, that makes it a little
- 25:19Speaker 6: bit more difficult, obviously, But I still think that it'll
- 25:24Speaker 6: be fun to have that extra SEC game in some
- 25:27Speaker 6: former or fashion.
- 25:28Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
- 25:29Speaker 1: He's David Kellhaen, play by play voice of the Old
- 25:32Speaker 1: Miss Rebels DK. I got to give you you probably
- 25:35Speaker 1: already know this. The weekend that you're coming in October
- 25:37Speaker 1: twenty fourth a little bit busy in this town. It's
- 25:41Speaker 1: half one weekend, so you've got the Formula one race
- 25:43Speaker 1: going on, So you got people from all over the
- 25:45Speaker 1: world coming in for that out at Kotah circuiting the Americas.
- 25:50Speaker 1: The Rockets and Spurs are playing a regular season game
- 25:55Speaker 1: at Moody Center that Friday night, the day before the game,
- 25:59Speaker 1: and there's other things going on too.
- 26:03Speaker 2: And the Manning Bowl on top of everything.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Then on top of everything else, you got that going on.
- 26:07Speaker 1: So yeah, quick quick story.
- 26:10Speaker 6: Last time he got the Cooper Cooper and our friends,
- 26:13Speaker 6: and when he came to Old This he signed with
- 26:16Speaker 6: us as a receiver. I'm one of the few people
- 26:17Speaker 6: that actually saw him practice before he had the next issue.
- 26:19Speaker 6: Why I'll get into all that, but he was very
- 26:21Speaker 6: fortunate to not have some serious issues with that and
- 26:25Speaker 6: kind of fought through his health.
- 26:26Speaker 2: But he ended his football career.
- 26:28Speaker 6: But you know, I watched him run routes, had great hands,
- 26:30Speaker 6: and everything about Cooper was like, he's a heck of
- 26:32Speaker 6: a football player's receiver, not a quarterback like the rest
- 26:35Speaker 6: of them. But when he got recovered from his next surgery,
- 26:38Speaker 6: we used him as a road reporter and the coaches
- 26:41Speaker 6: show funniest.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Guy in the world.
- 26:43Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, even at that age, at that young
- 26:46Speaker 6: age in college, personality just unreal. And we had so
- 26:50Speaker 6: much fun working together for a few years there.
- 26:54Speaker 2: And hey, you can tell Sarga about.
- 26:55Speaker 6: The the the.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Basket weaving comment or whatever.
- 27:01Speaker 6: I had to take it twice because there's an underwater
- 27:04Speaker 6: element to it, you know, so it's very difficult.
- 27:07Speaker 2: I bet Coop had to take it three times.
- 27:09Speaker 1: That was the grad level, right, Yeah, probably at the
- 27:12Speaker 1: grid level.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Take you all of that, okay, But I love Coop.
- 27:15Speaker 6: It's gonna be interesting because he and you know, Grandad
- 27:18Speaker 6: or both on this guys and arch playing for Texas.
- 27:20Speaker 2: That'll be a fun weekend for both schools.
- 27:22Speaker 1: And you're exactly he is a great dude. Cooper is
- 27:26Speaker 1: a lot of fun to listen to and just just
- 27:29Speaker 1: hilarious to be around.
- 27:31Speaker 2: So that that's great. Uh, that's that's awesome.
- 27:34Speaker 7: Uh.
- 27:34Speaker 1: DK, I appreciate the time, look forward to seeing you
- 27:37Speaker 1: when you get to down when you get to town
- 27:39Speaker 1: here in late October.
- 27:40Speaker 2: And thanks again for doing this today.
- 27:42Speaker 6: No problem and enjoyed it. Craig, did you see And
- 27:44Speaker 6: we'll catch you down the road.
- 27:46Speaker 2: You bet.
- 27:46Speaker 1: That's David Kellen, play by play voice of the Old
- 27:48Speaker 1: Miss Rebels and our SEC football previews. We'll continue up
- 27:53Speaker 1: next Inconceivable on a Monday here on Sports Media AM

- 28:40Speaker 1: previews looking at a different Southeastern Conference school every day,
- 28:44Speaker 1: visiting with the play by play voice of that school.
- 28:47Speaker 2: We've done it.
- 28:50Speaker 1: The week before last with five schools, and then last
- 28:54Speaker 1: week with five schools, and we have five left. Today
- 28:56Speaker 1: was ole Miss. Tomorrow will be Alabama. We'll visit with
- 29:00Speaker 1: Chris Stewart, play by play voice of the Crimson Tide.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Wednesday the Auburn Tigers, and we'll visit with Andy Birchram,
- 29:08Speaker 1: their play by play voice.
- 29:10Speaker 2: And I don't know.
- 29:11Speaker 1: How much of the program will be able to bring
- 29:13Speaker 1: you on Wednesday, probably about an hour or close to anyway,
- 29:17Speaker 1: we have a round Rock Express game. We'll bring to
- 29:19Speaker 1: you twelve fifty air time first pitch just past one o'clock,
- 29:22Speaker 1: so it'll probably be right around four o'clock or just
- 29:24Speaker 1: passed when we take air on Wednesday, but we will
- 29:28Speaker 1: bring you the conversation with Andy bircham to continue our
- 29:33Speaker 1: previews on that and then on Thursday and Friday, the
- 29:38Speaker 1: final two days of our three weeks of preview, will
- 29:41Speaker 1: zero in on the two biggest rivals for Texas.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Thursday, the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Toby Roland, their play by play voice, joins us and
- 29:50Speaker 1: Friday the anchor leg As I told him he would
- 29:53Speaker 1: be Andrew Monico, the voice of those fighting Texas Aggies
- 29:58Speaker 1: Texas A and M. And well, we'll visit with Andrew Monica,
- 30:02Speaker 1: the play by play voice of the Aggies on Friday
- 30:04Speaker 1: to wrap up our previews, also giving away copies of
- 30:09Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine throughout the course of this week.
- 30:14Speaker 2: And so we have a few more. We just sent
- 30:19Speaker 2: the offer out. Do we have a winner on that?
- 30:22Speaker 2: We maybe we may. We're compiling here, so we'll see.
- 30:26Speaker 2: I asked for the eighth.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Uh to ask for the eighth You did ask for
- 30:30Speaker 1: the the eighth person to reach us on the talk
- 30:34Speaker 1: back feature on the iHeartRadio app. So still looking for
- 30:38Speaker 1: a winner. Okay, we're close to but I hadn't got
- 30:40Speaker 1: to them right yet because we just did it right there.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So uh, hop back in there in the queue. Even
- 30:46Speaker 1: if you already did it earlier, you're still eligible to
- 30:48Speaker 1: do it. And we'll give away another copy later this
- 30:52Speaker 1: hour with a trivia question and then one more next
- 30:55Speaker 1: hour on the random style of delivery.
- 30:58Speaker 2: So we'll we'll do that coming up.
- 31:00Speaker 1: All right, Long Worn football team had a scrimmage on Saturday.
- 31:05Speaker 1: It was a little bit limited in terms of the
- 31:08Speaker 1: totality because and you'll hear Sark talk about a little
- 31:11Speaker 1: bit of a flute bug that was sweeping through the
- 31:13Speaker 1: team and what they were trying to do is get
- 31:16Speaker 1: guys healthy and all that kind of stuff. But uh
- 31:19Speaker 1: here here's what Sark had to say after the scrimmage
- 31:22Speaker 1: on Saturday, their first of a full on, full padded
- 31:26Speaker 1: fall camp scrimmages.
- 31:27Speaker 8: I wanted to be able to get to you guys
- 31:29Speaker 8: after scrimmages because I know it's a long time so
- 31:31Speaker 8: I see again, you know, kind of into next week.
- 31:34Speaker 8: So you know a couple of things from today that
- 31:36Speaker 8: were that you always have to manage and deal with
- 31:39Speaker 8: in training camp with any team. We kind of got
- 31:42Speaker 8: a little bit of a flu bug hit our team
- 31:43Speaker 8: here heading into heading into the scrimmage this weekend, so
- 31:46Speaker 8: we had some guys out you know that uh weren't
- 31:50Speaker 8: able to go. Rashem Biles Brad Spence, just as Terry
- 31:53Speaker 8: to Anthony Smith, Dayla mccutche and John Meredith. Uh, those
- 31:57Speaker 8: guys were down heading into the scrimmage.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Uh.
- 32:00Speaker 8: And then naturally when you scrimmag you're gonna have some guys,
- 32:02Speaker 8: you know, kind of get bumps and bruises as we go.
- 32:05Speaker 8: But I did think, I did think there were some
- 32:06Speaker 8: real highlight plays, so that Jonah Williams had a nice
- 32:09Speaker 8: interception in the end zone on the first drive, Grace
- 32:12Speaker 8: and Littleton had a had An had a really nice
- 32:15Speaker 8: seventy five yard interception return in the red area later
- 32:17Speaker 8: in practice. You know, I thought, I thought a couple
- 32:21Speaker 8: of the quarterbacks all kind of through you know, through
- 32:24Speaker 8: touchdown passes, made big plays.
- 32:26Speaker 5: You know.
- 32:26Speaker 8: Wingo had a long touchdown, Cam had a long touchdown,
- 32:30Speaker 8: nice touchdown to releak Brown from from kJ and uh
- 32:35Speaker 8: D Bell hit hit Colin Brown on a touchdown.
- 32:37Speaker 3: So some give and take there.
- 32:39Speaker 8: I thought the running game was pretty good offensively and
- 32:42Speaker 8: saw some from the young guys that that showed some
- 32:44Speaker 8: things there. I thought from a special team standpoint, I
- 32:47Speaker 8: thought we punted the ball very well today, and I
- 32:50Speaker 8: think Geo was four or five on field goals or
- 32:52Speaker 8: maybe even five or six with a long of forty nine,
- 32:55Speaker 8: you know, missed his first one.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I'm not sure.
- 32:57Speaker 8: We got to look at the snaphold operation, but I
- 32:59Speaker 8: thought that was good. Again, you know, it was warm
- 33:02Speaker 8: out today. We put our guys in some taxing situations. Naturally,
- 33:07Speaker 8: we've got to fight through, and we got to learn
- 33:08Speaker 8: how to fight through.
- 33:09Speaker 3: We had a halftime, we came back out in the heat,
- 33:12Speaker 3: and I thought, I thought we.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Managed it well.
- 33:14Speaker 3: But again, I think this is why our depth is
- 33:16Speaker 3: so important.
- 33:17Speaker 8: Days like today, you get a flu bug hit your
- 33:19Speaker 8: locker room, it's hot, guys start, guys start falling out
- 33:23Speaker 8: a little bit. Other guys got to step up and
- 33:25Speaker 8: they need to be ready to play. And so hopefully
- 33:27Speaker 8: this served as a great example of that.
- 33:29Speaker 2: All right, So that was some opening comment for me.
- 33:32Speaker 1: He was asked during the Q and a part about, uh,
- 33:36Speaker 1: how much of the linebacker depth is he seeing develop
- 33:40Speaker 1: and how much did he see on the field in the.
- 33:42Speaker 9: Scrimmage, younger guys who stepped up and kind of took
- 33:45Speaker 9: advantage of their opportunities.
- 33:46Speaker 8: I think it was Yeah, I think it was great
- 33:49Speaker 8: reps for you know, you think about Tyler Atkinson, Cozy Oak, Paula,
- 33:54Speaker 8: Rocky Cummings. I mean, these reps are invaluable for those guys.
- 33:58Speaker 8: You know, you think you take a guy laid in
- 34:00Speaker 8: the portal of Darius snow days like today, you're really
- 34:03Speaker 8: really glad you got him because he's a smart football player,
- 34:06Speaker 8: he's savvy, he can get in there and go play.
- 34:10Speaker 8: And again, we weren't trying to We weren't trying to
- 34:12Speaker 8: overdo it with with with Justin Cryer. You know a
- 34:15Speaker 8: lot of our guys when we were live in the
- 34:17Speaker 8: first half of the scrimmage, we limited those guys a
- 34:19Speaker 8: Ton Crier, Colin Simmons, you know, Arch Cam Coleman, Wingo,
- 34:25Speaker 8: Emmitt Moseley.
- 34:27Speaker 2: So there was.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Already added opportunities for guys.
- 34:30Speaker 8: But but at linebacker, clearly a lot of the young
- 34:33Speaker 8: guys got got plenty of reps today.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Okay, Uh back to that deal about the flu outbreak
- 34:38Speaker 1: and and you know, what kind of impact does it have,
- 34:41Speaker 1: like on a scrimmage and the performance on both sides
- 34:44Speaker 1: of the ball and mixing and matching and those kinds
- 34:47Speaker 1: of things.
- 34:47Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't I don't know an exact number of
- 34:49Speaker 8: Kirk and I'm I'm anticipating we may have a few
- 34:53Speaker 8: more that that fought through today. You know, we'll see,
- 34:56Speaker 8: we'll see what happens. We have obviously an off day tomorrow.
- 34:58Speaker 8: But that's hey, that's that's part of life, you know.
- 35:00Speaker 8: And and there's no telling we couldn't get a flue
- 35:03Speaker 8: bug in any.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Game this season.
- 35:04Speaker 8: And you know, how what do we do to our
- 35:06Speaker 8: best of our ability as a staff to manage that
- 35:08Speaker 8: keep guys hydrated so that they can contribute. From a
- 35:11Speaker 8: ballgame standpoint, you know, I would probably just say first
- 35:15Speaker 8: scrimmage out. I would probably would lean to the defense.
- 35:18Speaker 5: You know.
- 35:18Speaker 8: Again, you know, a couple of red zone turnovers, I
- 35:21Speaker 8: thought they got off the field. Again, that's not to
- 35:24Speaker 8: take anything away from the offense, because I thought there
- 35:27Speaker 8: was some explosive plays. Like I said, the run game
- 35:29Speaker 8: I was encouraged by. But again, you know, when you
- 35:34Speaker 8: don't have a game plan, we were just trying to.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Work ourselves through some stuff.
- 35:37Speaker 8: But again, I didn't see anybody today that I felt
- 35:41Speaker 8: like the moment was too big. And that's big going
- 35:43Speaker 8: into our first scrimmage. Now, we need to be better
- 35:45Speaker 8: next Saturday. And I just told the team that you know, individual,
- 35:48Speaker 8: we've all got it. We've all got to take a
- 35:49Speaker 8: step forward. We've all got to continue to improve so
- 35:52Speaker 8: that we can get better as a team because we're
- 35:54Speaker 8: not a finished product. But but I do think for
- 35:57Speaker 8: a week and a half into training camp, today served
- 35:59Speaker 8: as good kind of barometer for where we're at, Where
- 36:03Speaker 8: are where our weaknesses are, where we need to improve,
- 36:06Speaker 8: where our strengths are that we can lean into. But
- 36:09Speaker 8: I would probably say the defense was was a little
- 36:11Speaker 8: bit ahead.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Today, okay.
- 36:12Speaker 1: And so on the opposite side of that, how did
- 36:14Speaker 1: he feel his offensive line performed?
- 36:16Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I was.
- 36:17Speaker 8: I was really encouraged with the first offensive line unit
- 36:21Speaker 8: in that. You know, we've been harping on physicality and
- 36:25Speaker 8: we've been harping on running the ball all off season,
- 36:28Speaker 8: and I thought they did that today. I thought they
- 36:31Speaker 8: played a physical brand of football. I thought they protected
- 36:34Speaker 8: the quarterback well. I thought they showed good continuity with
- 36:37Speaker 8: one another, you know, which is always something, you know,
- 36:39Speaker 8: how do they work with one another? Now, granted, in
- 36:42Speaker 8: the second half, we made some we made some changes
- 36:45Speaker 8: and Gooseby's you know, we pulled him out, we pulled
- 36:48Speaker 8: Melvin out, and we get a couple of penalties with
- 36:51Speaker 8: those with those two's that were in there, and so
- 36:54Speaker 8: you know, how do we how do we bring our
- 36:56Speaker 8: twos along as well? You know those linemen that are
- 36:58Speaker 8: maybe seven eight nine kind of in the rotation so
- 37:02Speaker 8: that if their numbers called, they can they can function
- 37:04Speaker 8: and operate at a high level if their numbers called
- 37:06Speaker 8: as well.
- 37:07Speaker 1: All Right, we'll hear some more from Sark coming up
- 37:10Speaker 1: next hour, including his thoughts on arch Manning and his
- 37:14Speaker 1: performance and a surprise in the backfield as well. So
- 37:18Speaker 1: we'll hear some more from Sart coming up next time,
- 37:21Speaker 1: and we'll hear more from him tomorrow as well as
- 37:23Speaker 1: a follow up to today's practice. Before we get to
- 37:27Speaker 1: the break, I wanted to get to the brand new
- 37:32Speaker 1: preseason AP Top twenty five College Football poll. It was
- 37:36Speaker 1: released today, and here's something historic to note that Ohio
- 37:46Speaker 1: State and Oregon are one and two in the poll.
- 37:49Speaker 2: What is historicis is that.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Those two, obviously both out of the Big Ten, gives
- 37:59Speaker 1: the Big ten and the top two teams in the
- 38:03Speaker 1: preseason rankings for the first time in sixty five years,
- 38:09Speaker 1: so first time since nineteen sixty one and just the
- 38:15Speaker 1: second time ever. If I'm going off the top of
- 38:18Speaker 1: my head that might have been. You can check check
- 38:21Speaker 1: me on that, Jake. It might be Minnesota and Iowa,
- 38:25Speaker 1: or Minnesota and Ohio State. Maybe because I think Minnesota
- 38:29Speaker 1: was coming off a national championship. Off of that nineteen
- 38:33Speaker 1: sixty one preseason AP poll, I'm going to guess Minnesota
- 38:38Speaker 1: was one of the.
- 38:38Speaker 5: Two nineteen sixty one. Yeah, Iowa and Ohio State.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Iowa, oh I said to mentioned three, and I said, Okay,
- 38:46Speaker 1: Iowa and Ohio State. It's only it's the first time
- 38:48Speaker 1: since then, and only the second time ever that it's
- 38:52Speaker 1: happened that two Big Ten teams are preseason number one
- 38:58Speaker 1: and two. Sixty nine media members cover college football, and
- 39:04Speaker 1: so here's how the poll broke down. Ohio State is
- 39:07Speaker 1: number one. They got forty of the sixty nine votes.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Oregon is number two. They becoup fourteen first place votes. Georgia,
- 39:15Speaker 1: without a first place vote, was third. Notre Dame was
- 39:19Speaker 1: six first place votes was fourth. Texas checks in at
- 39:22Speaker 1: number five. No first place votes for the Long Mornings. Indiana,
- 39:26Speaker 1: the defending national champions, number six in the rankings, and
- 39:30Speaker 1: they had eight first place votes. Miami with one first
- 39:35Speaker 1: place vote is number seven, and there's no other first
- 39:39Speaker 1: place votes below that. Texas A and M was eight, Ole,
- 39:42Speaker 1: miss nine, and Oklahoma ten to round out the top ten.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Then in the second ten, it starts off with LSU.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Texas Tech is twelve, Alabama is thirteen, EYU fourteen tie
- 40:02Speaker 1: with USC Southern California both are fourteen. Michigan is number sixteen,
- 40:09Speaker 1: Washington seventeen, Penn State eighteen, SMU at nineteen. Tennessee finishes
- 40:15Speaker 1: out the top twenty, and then the final five in
- 40:17Speaker 1: the rankings. You taught number twenty one, Iowa is twenty two,
- 40:21Speaker 1: Houston twenty three, Louisville number twenty four, and Missouri is
- 40:25Speaker 1: twenty five. So there's your ap top twenty five. And
- 40:31Speaker 1: if you're wondering how many of those top twenty five
- 40:33Speaker 1: teams is Texas playing well, start at number one with
- 40:36Speaker 1: Ohio State. Then you get Texas A and M is eight, Ole,
- 40:41Speaker 1: Missus nine, Oklahomas ten, LSU is eleven.
- 40:46Speaker 2: All of those are on the Texas schedule.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Tennessee is number twenty and Missouri is twenty five. Seven
- 40:55Speaker 1: Top twenty five ranks schools on the Texas schedule.
- 40:58Speaker 5: And five of the top ten that are not named Texas.
- 41:02Speaker 5: That's unbelievable. Yeah, how about that five at the top eleven?
- 41:06Speaker 1: Really but yeah, yeah, exactly, So uh anyway, that's that's
- 41:11Speaker 1: just so you'll know that that's where it is.
- 41:15Speaker 5: Zero first place votes Craig for SEC teams. So that
- 41:19Speaker 5: might be a reaction to the playoff struggles the conference
- 41:22Speaker 5: has had over the last couple of years. There's not
- 41:25Speaker 5: one of the sixty nine reporters who essentially is picking
- 41:28Speaker 5: an SEC team as it's preseason number one. It doesn't
- 41:31Speaker 5: mean nobody will pick him to win the national championship,
- 41:34Speaker 5: but the logic would follow.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Well, and Miami gets a first place vote, I guess
- 41:39Speaker 1: for getting into the National Championship game a year ago
- 41:42Speaker 1: and playing Indiana better than just about anybody did during
- 41:46Speaker 1: the course of the season. Indiana got eight, and as
- 41:50Speaker 1: I've said on a couple of occasions, that could be
- 41:54Speaker 1: in some measure due to just being the defending national champion.
- 41:57Speaker 1: That happens a lot Notre Dame, a lot of people
- 41:59Speaker 1: high on Notre Dame. Great bull game showing right. They
- 42:03Speaker 1: opted out, all right, So we're gonna hear more from
- 42:07Speaker 1: next hour, and we have more on this. Jake and
- 42:10Speaker 1: I will do a little more of a breakdown on
- 42:12Speaker 1: the science of the voting and what goes into the
- 42:16Speaker 1: minds of those doing the voting, and what does it
- 42:19Speaker 1: really mean does it is it truly meaningless or might
- 42:25Speaker 1: it carry some influence.
- 42:28Speaker 2: We'll talk about that coming up in the next hour. Influencers.
- 42:33Speaker 1: I didn't say TikTok influence. I just said people influencing.
- 42:36Speaker 1: Start's influence all up. Next, we're gonna take a look
- 42:42Speaker 1: back at the weekend for the Cowboys and Texans when
- 42:44Speaker 1: we continue on thirteen under the Zone. It just started
- 42:56Speaker 1: up on a Monday. This tune will take me back
- 43:00Speaker 1: concerted vending days. I worked this some of the shows
- 43:04Speaker 1: on the Steel Wheels tour from nineteen eighty one Rolling Stones,
- 43:10Speaker 1: including in the Cotton Bowl where the first hack was
- 43:15Speaker 1: the fabulous Thunderbirds that the Vaughn brothers had Stevie Ray
- 43:19Speaker 1: and Jimmy Vaughn and it then's Ezy Top, then the
- 43:22Speaker 1: Rolling Stones in a driving rain, pouring rain at the
- 43:28Speaker 1: Cotton didn't bother anybody. They were all out there to
- 43:31Speaker 1: see it. And then then at the superdomin New Orleans
- 43:36Speaker 1: early December of eighty one, I think the Neville Brothers
- 43:39Speaker 1: opened for them, and then they did this, and then,
- 43:41Speaker 1: like I said, I always marked that occasion, remembering that
- 43:43Speaker 1: it's the first time I've ever been, ever seen anybody
- 43:47Speaker 1: shoot off fireworks, a large fireworks inside a dome stadium.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Wow.
- 43:52Speaker 1: I wonder about the health and safety concerns in that.
- 43:55Speaker 5: I always think about. Well, I'll get back to the
- 43:58Speaker 5: song in a second. I always think about it. Michael's
- 44:00Speaker 5: at the start of the second half, when the smoke
- 44:02Speaker 5: hasn't cleared.
- 44:03Speaker 2: He'll let you know about it.
- 44:04Speaker 5: Oh, there's there's some lingering pyrotechnics out there.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Yeah, true enough, true.
- 44:11Speaker 5: But that that song, yeah, gets you fired up for
- 44:13Speaker 5: a week, gets you fired up for the start of
- 44:15Speaker 5: football season. It's also the song that was playing the
- 44:19Speaker 5: walkout music, if you will, for the pitchers at Nationals Park.
- 44:23Speaker 2: It was the choice of Max Schurzer.
- 44:24Speaker 5: I always associate this song with being so excited to
- 44:27Speaker 5: watch him pitch for the first time.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Okay, Uh, let's let's have a little recap of the
- 44:33Speaker 1: weekend in the NFL in the preseason?
- 44:36Speaker 2: Uh, did you did you watch much?
- 44:38Speaker 5: I'm not a preseason guy, and I'm not afraid to
- 44:41Speaker 5: admit it. I mean, I'll watch highlights I see. Of course,
- 44:44Speaker 5: my my algorithm on Twitter knows me too well. It
- 44:47Speaker 5: knows I'm gotta I'm in too many fantasy football leagues,
- 44:50Speaker 5: so it's showing me content about look at this highlight
- 44:52Speaker 5: for this rookie, you know, pick him up in Dynasty.
- 44:55Speaker 5: I try not to read too much into the preseason,
- 44:59Speaker 5: and I enjoy the games when they're on. I'm not
- 45:02Speaker 5: going to turn it off if it you know, if
- 45:03Speaker 5: it's out somewhere. But I've taken the last couple of
- 45:06Speaker 5: weekends to little, you know, ease up on the football
- 45:11Speaker 5: before it takes over my life.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Okay, all right, we I did watch some of the
- 45:17Speaker 1: Texans on Thursday night. I was not very impressed with that,
- 45:20Speaker 1: and neither was Demiico Ryans. We'll hear more from him
- 45:22Speaker 1: coming up in the next segment. And then on Saturday,
- 45:28Speaker 1: I watched a little bit of the Bears and Brown
- 45:30Speaker 1: simply because it was on and it turned on and
- 45:32Speaker 1: it was live at the time, and I watched some
- 45:34Speaker 1: of that, and I was kind of interested to see
- 45:36Speaker 1: the Deshaun Watson versus Shadeur Sanders thing.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I don't think either one lit it up.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Deshaun might have looked a little bit better Chaudeur through
- 45:45Speaker 1: an interception.
- 45:46Speaker 2: I saw a lot of underthrows on Twitter from DeShawn.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I had that and he and he lost
- 45:51Speaker 1: to fumble too, So so there was that.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Did you see ty Simpson?
- 45:56Speaker 1: I did because I watched the Rams and Chiefs and
- 46:00Speaker 1: and I had it on and I didn't watch it
- 46:02Speaker 1: with rapped attention, but it did. I saw Stetson Bennett
- 46:06Speaker 1: and playing, and then and then ty Simpson. You know,
- 46:09Speaker 1: because obviously Matthew Stafford is not going to take a
- 46:11Speaker 1: snap at the preseason.
- 46:12Speaker 2: That is Sean mcvay's wait.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Even though Joe Burrow played him for the Bengals the
- 46:16Speaker 1: other night.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I never understand that.
- 46:18Speaker 5: And every year Zach Taylor puts his starters in the preseason,
- 46:22Speaker 5: and every year they start slowly.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Josh Allen played the other night, played some snaps, but uh,
- 46:29Speaker 1: Sean McVay, no dice, you're not going to see any
- 46:33Speaker 1: starters out there or it, other than maybe in special teams.
- 46:37Speaker 5: The only thing I saw from the Commanders who season
- 46:39Speaker 5: I had declared over in the two o'clock hour today
- 46:42Speaker 5: is that Marcus Mariota suffered a non contact injury.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so that that's not good, not good.
- 46:49Speaker 5: And the offensive line didn't look good in that they
- 46:52Speaker 5: couldn't get any kind of a run blocking push going. Now,
- 46:54Speaker 5: you don't want to read into a preseason, right, but
- 46:56Speaker 5: the defense is supposed to be vanilla Craig, Yeah, supposed
- 47:00Speaker 5: to be easy covered two, straightforward. See if you can
- 47:04Speaker 5: push the Dolphins defensive line backwards, and the Commander's starters
- 47:08Speaker 5: didn't do that.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:10Speaker 1: I watched a little bit of the Rams and Chiefs,
- 47:12Speaker 1: and again, key players on both sides were not in
- 47:15Speaker 1: action in that. So yeah, I did see a little
- 47:16Speaker 1: bit of Ty Simpson and then he didn't look bad.
- 47:18Speaker 1: And Stetson Bennett moved the ball on a couple of
- 47:21Speaker 1: drives as well. The big question in the Rams is
- 47:26Speaker 1: you know whether Aaron Donald. He has worked out with
- 47:31Speaker 1: the team twice, but he has not announced if he's
- 47:34Speaker 1: coming back. There's a lot of people excited about that,
- 47:41Speaker 1: so we'll see. And the Cowboys, of course had Von Miller,
- 47:44Speaker 1: who was a teammate of of Aaron Donald. When the
- 47:48Speaker 1: Rams won the Super Bowl. The Cowboys just signed Von Miller.
- 47:51Speaker 1: He had been a free agent wasn't on a roster,
- 47:54Speaker 1: so they did do that.
- 47:55Speaker 5: Do you think it's smart for both sides to just wait?
- 48:00Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 48:00Speaker 1: Well, Donald and the Rams, the Rams for sure are
- 48:03Speaker 1: not in any hurry.
- 48:04Speaker 2: They're okay on their defensive front. You know. They got
- 48:07Speaker 2: Miles Head, yeah, more than ok.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and they've got other guys as well, so they're
- 48:13Speaker 1: in no hurry. But if Aaron Donald stays in shape
- 48:17Speaker 1: and maybe the need comes around to do it, he's
- 48:22Speaker 1: got one year left on that deal. If you were
- 48:25Speaker 1: to come back, thirty million bucks, you know. So we'll
- 48:29Speaker 1: see if it turns out that way or not.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Could turn out to be quite a year for Craig
- 48:34Speaker 2: Way's teams.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see, we'll see. The Dodgers aren't exactly impressing
- 48:38Speaker 1: anybody right now. They look they are struggling.
- 48:41Speaker 2: That's true, Catcher of the defense, all of it.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's it's a struggle, all right. Let's hear
- 48:46Speaker 1: from Ryan shot Number, the Cowboys head coach. They did
- 48:48Speaker 1: look impressive again, a lot of backups seeing action. You
- 48:53Speaker 1: didn't see the main ones out there on either side,
- 48:56Speaker 1: either for Dallas or for the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle.
- 48:59Speaker 2: See.
- 49:00Speaker 1: But the guys who were out there for the Cowboys
- 49:02Speaker 1: looked impressive in the seventeen to seven wins, and Brian
- 49:06Speaker 1: seoan Hammer was asked for his thoughts on it.
- 49:07Speaker 10: I thought the second half was really really well played.
- 49:11Speaker 10: I thought defensively they were amazing. I think three or
- 49:14Speaker 10: four three and four and outs. I thought they were awesome.
- 49:18Speaker 10: A couple of the red zone stops. Jonathan Mingo thinks
- 49:21Speaker 10: the first half made incredible play, you know, on a
- 49:23Speaker 10: punt return, stopped it, and then obviously we muffed the
- 49:26Speaker 10: fumble there late.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Defense goes right back out there.
- 49:30Speaker 10: A little bit of training camp football, a little sloppy,
- 49:33Speaker 10: that's kind of what you deal with. But overall, I
- 49:35Speaker 10: thought the team effort to get the win against a
- 49:38Speaker 10: good opponent was was really good.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Things. We obviously need to clean up the penalties.
- 49:44Speaker 10: They threw a lot of penalties really on both teams,
- 49:47Speaker 10: but you know that's what the preseason four work on
- 49:49Speaker 10: your hand placement get better.
- 49:52Speaker 2: But the overall is really really proud of our guys.
- 49:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Every year, it seems like in Cowboys' training camp there
- 49:57Speaker 1: is a name that pops up seemingly out of nowhere,
- 50:03Speaker 1: like Hey and you take note of this guy, whether
- 50:05Speaker 1: he makes the team or not. You know, this year's
- 50:08Speaker 1: name I submit to is Camden Brown, wide receiver from
- 50:12Speaker 1: Texas Southern who caught two touchdown passes in the game
- 50:15Speaker 1: and not easy catches either. And he was asked about
- 50:19Speaker 1: Camden Brown's two touchdown performance.
- 50:21Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, you know, the game's not too big
- 50:23Speaker 10: for him. He does that every every every day in practice.
- 50:26Speaker 10: We see it all the time. And you know, I
- 50:28Speaker 10: thought it was a really really good throw by Sam
- 50:31Speaker 10: tight coverage, but they trust him. And then you know,
- 50:33Speaker 10: Joe's throw on the fade, he gets blasted and uh,
- 50:37Speaker 10: the one and to catch me. But he's been doing
- 50:39Speaker 10: that the whole time. And what I love about him is,
- 50:42Speaker 10: you know he does the little things too. You watch
- 50:44Speaker 10: him on special teams and one on one drills, things
- 50:46Speaker 10: like that. He realizes that, you know, that's how you
- 50:48Speaker 10: make this football team. When you've got a receiver room
- 50:51Speaker 10: that's filled with George Pickens, Ceedee lamb Ryan Florida, people
- 50:54Speaker 10: like that, you know that stuff matters. So you know,
- 50:58Speaker 10: really good day. But he's got to keep stacking on
- 50:59Speaker 10: my he's been doing.
- 51:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and that includes uh, continue to perform getting some
- 51:03Speaker 1: first team reps.
- 51:05Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean we've wanted to get him in there
- 51:06Speaker 10: a little bit with the first team, and when we
- 51:09Speaker 10: put him in there, he's done a really good job.
- 51:12Speaker 10: We actually moved him over to that position for the
- 51:14Speaker 10: second one, you know, because he normally plays flanker and
- 51:17Speaker 10: we moved him over there. And like I said, the
- 51:20Speaker 10: throw from Joe was terrific, but you know, the catch
- 51:23Speaker 10: was incredible as well. And but yeah, he's just consistent, man,
- 51:28Speaker 10: And that's what we want as coaches.
- 51:29Speaker 2: We want people that are consistent.
- 51:30Speaker 10: They're the same every day and yeah they might have
- 51:32Speaker 10: a bad day or a dip, but then they bring
- 51:34Speaker 10: it right back.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, so we Yeah, he caught a touchdown
- 51:38Speaker 1: passed from Sam Howell and he called one also from
- 51:41Speaker 1: Joe Milton in the game. And if you only give
- 51:45Speaker 1: up seven points, even in a preseason game, you've probably
- 51:47Speaker 1: done a pretty good job. And that includes in the
- 51:50Speaker 1: red zone where shot. He was asked about his team's defense. Yeah,
- 51:53Speaker 1: I mean the defense. The defense's job is to keep
- 51:56Speaker 1: people out of the end zone. I mean, that's what
- 51:57Speaker 1: we're tasked to do. And you know, I'm fine winning
- 52:01Speaker 1: games seven to three, ten to seven. I don't care,
- 52:05Speaker 1: but I thought they were terrific. I thought, you know,
- 52:07Speaker 1: we were a little sloppy early on, you know, and
- 52:09Speaker 1: we gave them some hitting yards with penalties early on.
- 52:13Speaker 10: But I thought they really buttoned down, and I thought
- 52:14Speaker 10: the pass rush was really good. We let Milroy get
- 52:17Speaker 10: out a few times, which he's very athletic, but overall
- 52:20Speaker 10: I was very, very pleased. Anytime you can get three
- 52:22Speaker 10: and ounce and four and outs in the red zone stops.
- 52:25Speaker 2: So what you want?
- 52:26Speaker 1: Yeah, we did good there. Well, here's some more from
- 52:29Speaker 1: Shotty coming up next hour. Up next, we're gonna hear
- 52:32Speaker 1: from Demiko rants. But here we're gonna hear from somebody
- 52:35Speaker 1: who did happened to land as the lottery would have it,
- 52:40Speaker 1: as the eighth person. This is how it works when
- 52:44Speaker 1: I say, you know, if you want to win a
- 52:45Speaker 1: copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, what you need
- 52:48Speaker 1: to do is follow the instructions, not hard, and then
- 52:53Speaker 1: hope on the random one that you happen to be
- 52:56Speaker 1: the eighth person to reach us on the talk back
- 53:00Speaker 1: Mike and this guy did, Hey.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Craig, just in case you still haven't reached number eight.
- 53:06Speaker 2: I'm trying it again. This is Greg looking forward to
- 53:08Speaker 2: the Dave Campbell's magazine one. You got it, Greg, you
- 53:12Speaker 2: got it? Well done. What's his last name, It's Greg
- 53:15Speaker 2: Devorac Greg.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Well done. You get a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 53:21Speaker 1: Football magazine. So there you go.
- 53:25Speaker 2: You'll get contacted on how to do it. You can start.
- 53:27Speaker 1: You know, the opportunity will be for you starting tomorrow
- 53:32Speaker 1: to pick up a copy of the magazine. So congratulations
- 53:35Speaker 1: to Greg. We're going to give away another copy coming
- 53:39Speaker 1: up with a trivia question this hour, and then another
- 53:41Speaker 1: one with a random random entry just like the one
- 53:45Speaker 1: that Greg won on coming up in the four o'clock hour.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Up next, we'll hear from the head coach of the
- 53:51Speaker 1: Houston Texans. He's had a chance to look at the
- 53:53Speaker 1: game film from their loss on Thursday night to the Chargers,
- 53:57Speaker 1: Demiko Ryans.
- 53:58Speaker 2: That's next. When we continue on sports trading on my mind,
- 54:08Speaker 2: I can't go along.
- 54:12Speaker 7: And we're back to show. I have a message for Craig.
- 54:16Speaker 11: Share it by you seeing the talk back feature on
- 54:18Speaker 11: the Ihearts radio app one of.
- 54:21Speaker 2: The greatest rock bands of all time for you, what
- 54:23Speaker 2: mat I'm trying to remember is is this song also
- 54:29Speaker 2: off of Rumors? I don't know, this is not This
- 54:33Speaker 2: song is not a part of rum I mean I
- 54:34Speaker 2: didn't think so.
- 54:36Speaker 1: I was like, man, this is because of all of
- 54:38Speaker 1: the mega hits and huge gigantic hits. Young Rumors were
- 54:42Speaker 1: one of the best selling albums of all time. If
- 54:44Speaker 1: this one's on there, I think this predated End of
- 54:46Speaker 1: the Day. This might be the one on the same
- 54:49Speaker 1: album as Rhiannon's.
- 54:50Speaker 5: Things from their self titled out in nineteen seventy.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and also on that album, what are the other tunes.
- 54:58Speaker 2: On that album? Need to See? I Know You've got
- 55:02Speaker 2: say You Love Me on there? Ran in Warm Ways
- 55:05Speaker 2: over my Head another gig Danny album Crystal.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Between that album and and Rumors, you can see why
- 55:15Speaker 1: Fleetwood back the Kingdom so.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Gigantic, got Landslide on there too. Yeah, heck of the deal?
- 55:22Speaker 7: All right?
- 55:23Speaker 1: The Monday went back to the practice till for the
- 55:26Speaker 1: Houston Texans. They were they practiced inside Reliance Stadium today and.
- 55:33Speaker 2: Uh or what is it called NRG. I guess yes,
- 55:36Speaker 2: set Reliant Park. The whole thing.
- 55:39Speaker 5: Well, I'm sorry, it was Houston Stadium. Over the summer
- 55:41Speaker 5: now it's NRG Stadium.
- 55:42Speaker 2: That's right, it's back to RG. They practice inside the
- 55:45Speaker 2: stadium today.
- 55:46Speaker 1: They have the Raiders coming in for joint practices tomorrow.
- 55:51Speaker 1: But before that, in review of the loss on Thursday
- 55:56Speaker 1: night of the Chargers and with the roster moves that
- 55:58Speaker 1: need to be made, Graham Mertz was injured, Brett Rippon
- 56:02Speaker 1: has been signed as another quarterback.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Demico Ryans asked about that move.
- 56:06Speaker 9: Yeah, really unfortunate news for Graham for him to have
- 56:10Speaker 9: torn acl and see he's battled. He's done a good
- 56:14Speaker 9: job all camp past two years. He's done a really
- 56:16Speaker 9: good job of handling his role.
- 56:17Speaker 7: The proper way.
- 56:19Speaker 9: But he's encouraged, he's taking it the right way. So
- 56:23Speaker 9: I'm just excited to see him on his.
- 56:25Speaker 7: Road to recovery. He'll do a great job with that.
- 56:27Speaker 9: We signed Ripping today, So getting him in, guy who's
- 56:31Speaker 9: bouncing around a few different teams, had some experiences played
- 56:34Speaker 9: in games. Son, He's already you can see he's very
- 56:37Speaker 9: sharp guy. He's picked up on the offense, ready to
- 56:40Speaker 9: take some reps. So thankful to be able to get
- 56:43Speaker 9: him in at this time to help us out during camp.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Brett Ripping that's a good way to describe. He's
- 56:47Speaker 1: bounced around a few teams, including the Rams. He was
- 56:50Speaker 1: with the Rams last year as well, son of Mark Ripping,
- 56:55Speaker 1: the former Washington Super Bowl MVP.
- 56:58Speaker 2: The last Washington quarterback to the Super Bowl. How about that?
- 57:02Speaker 2: All right?
- 57:03Speaker 1: They went back to work then obviously they were traveling
- 57:06Speaker 1: back or not traveling back. They had the day off
- 57:08Speaker 1: Friday after the Thursday night game, but then they went
- 57:12Speaker 1: back to work on Saturday with the practice, and Ryan's
- 57:15Speaker 1: was talking about the intensity he saw on the field.
- 57:17Speaker 9: Saw a lot of good intensity they had practice. Guys
- 57:20Speaker 9: were flying around, Guys were.
- 57:22Speaker 7: Just having fun playing football.
- 57:24Speaker 9: He could sit and feel the energy from our guys,
- 57:26Speaker 9: you know, all across, all across the field. Thought the
- 57:29Speaker 9: guys had a really good day to day. Today was
- 57:31Speaker 9: primarily our first group getting most of the reps because
- 57:34Speaker 9: they didn't play in the game. So really good energy
- 57:37Speaker 9: at practice, good start to the week. We'll see how
- 57:39Speaker 9: we continue to progress throughout.
- 57:40Speaker 1: You know, there's still a great deal of curiosity, great
- 57:43Speaker 1: deal of curiosity surrounding Jadevi and Cloudey. Of course, started
- 57:47Speaker 1: with the Texans and then went to other teams, including
- 57:49Speaker 1: the Cowboys last year. We had to think nine sacks
- 57:52Speaker 1: last year for the Cowboys. Now back with the Texans
- 57:55Speaker 1: sign and the Demiko Ryans was asked, what's the exact
- 58:00Speaker 1: act has he brought to camp and to the defense.
- 58:03Speaker 7: Jadaymian's done a really good job.
- 58:04Speaker 9: He's still picking up the scheme and how we do things,
- 58:07Speaker 9: but he's done a really good job with the rest.
- 58:09Speaker 7: That he's given.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Another guy who's made an impression is a rookie safety
- 58:13Speaker 1: from USC Kamari Ramsey, and he had an interception of
- 58:18Speaker 1: the game and it You know, anytime you make a
- 58:21Speaker 1: play like that and you're a rookie, you're going to
- 58:25Speaker 1: attract the notice of the coaching staff, and Ramsey certainly
- 58:29Speaker 1: did so with regard to the head coach and the staff.
- 58:32Speaker 9: With Kamara's growth, what I've seen as a guy who's
- 58:35Speaker 9: very smart. We're starting to throw a couple more things
- 58:39Speaker 9: at him, seeing if he can handle dual position roles,
- 58:41Speaker 9: so try to mix it up, try to get him
- 58:43Speaker 9: down and nickel.
- 58:44Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 58:45Speaker 9: Moving back to safety, he's handled both well in the
- 58:48Speaker 9: classroom in a meeting setting, so just have to come
- 58:51Speaker 9: out and do the physical rests. But he's a guy
- 58:52Speaker 9: you can put a lot on mentally, he's absorbed it
- 58:55Speaker 9: really well. Got one pick in the game with his
- 58:58Speaker 9: great sid have had another one on the sideline, but man,
- 59:02Speaker 9: on that particular play, you talk about excellent technique from
- 59:05Speaker 9: him being exactly where he's supposed to be, reading the
- 59:08Speaker 9: quarterback the proper way, pushing through as a buzz defender.
- 59:11Speaker 7: A really great job by him.
- 59:12Speaker 2: All right.
- 59:13Speaker 1: Now, remember I mentioned they're gonna have a joint practice
- 59:15Speaker 1: with the Raiders, joint practices, and the Cowboys said had
- 59:20Speaker 1: one with the Rams last week, and I think they're
- 59:22Speaker 1: gonna have another one with him. Joint practices can be
- 59:25Speaker 1: a mixed blessing or mixed back. First of all, you're
- 59:30Speaker 1: not having to go up again, You're you're actually getting
- 59:32Speaker 1: to hit someone in a different color jersey, a different
- 59:35Speaker 1: a different team, So there's a there's a positive out
- 59:39Speaker 1: of that. And I will also say this, the coaches
- 59:41Speaker 1: kind of know they share with one another what they're
- 59:43Speaker 1: each working on, so it gives equal opportunity for success,
- 59:48Speaker 1: whether it's one team's offense against the other team's defense
- 59:51Speaker 1: and vice versa. So it's worked out that the mixed
- 59:54Speaker 1: blessing part comes in sometimes the intensity can ratch up
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: to a point where you have out and out fights,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: and there have been guys who've been hurt in training
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: camp scuffles with players of other teams. So that's one
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: thing the coach has always tried to monitor and make
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: sure the intensity plays through. Is they like to say
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: to the echo of a whistle and then it stops
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: right there, and then they go back to the rules
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: and they go back to work. So against that backdrop,
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Demico Rans was asked about what this preparation will be
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: like for this joint practice with the Raiders.
- 1:00:31Speaker 9: Today and this week, for us to be typical to
- 1:00:34Speaker 9: our in season week. That's why we're here a little
- 1:00:36Speaker 9: later in the afternoon when all our guys get used
- 1:00:38Speaker 9: to our inn season schedule and how we operate. So
- 1:00:41Speaker 9: we'll go through a normal in season week up until
- 1:00:45Speaker 9: it's that Tuesday to our joint practice, and we'll have
- 1:00:48Speaker 9: a really good competitive practice versus the Raiders.
- 1:00:50Speaker 7: I mean, they're gonna give.
- 1:00:52Speaker 9: Us a lot of good, good lunks, good competition, really
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: good talent, especially the running back position is talented.
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: A tight ends their offensive line.
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: Fast, so we got a defensive end as well.
- 1:01:03Speaker 7: All Right, Max Crosby.
- 1:01:04Speaker 9: So for our guys to be able to go against
- 1:01:06Speaker 9: a really talented team is going to be very beneficial
- 1:01:09Speaker 9: to us and really helping.
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: Us progress and get better as camp.
- 1:01:13Speaker 9: Is going on.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Hey, he did even mention Fernanda Mendoza, right, and Mendoza
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: has a pretty good debut for at quarterback for the US.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he'll be in there before long.
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: It'll be interesting to see him go up against this
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: Texans front. You heard everything Brian Schottenneimer had to say
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: about his O line facing the Rams. How about how
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: this how this young Raiders remade Raiders offensive line and
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: obviously Mendoza look against the Texans front, which is to
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: me the best in football stadium.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it can be.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: And how about the overall message that Demico Ryans would
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: have for his team coming off that preseason opening loss. Now, again,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: it's a preseason game. More's the point. It was a
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: preseason opening game, So there's not going to be much
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: in the way of the information on your regular game
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: by game starters that comes out of that, other than
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: perhaps on special teams as well. Still, in all, you know,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: they always talk about the attitude and intensity that they
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: want to have from their guys, and so Ryan's was
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: asked what was his message to the team following that
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: loss to the Chargers.
- 1:02:24Speaker 9: My message to most of our guys was we got
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: to pick it up from a play style standpoint of
- 1:02:32Speaker 9: how we're swarming to the football and how we're finishing
- 1:02:37Speaker 9: on the football.
- 1:02:37Speaker 7: I thought, you know, Chargers ran.
- 1:02:39Speaker 9: The ball efficiently versus us, and they were very effective
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: of knocking us off the ball. We didn't have finished
- 1:02:45Speaker 9: the right way, and I feel like we left a
- 1:02:46Speaker 9: lot out there, especially on the defensive side and offense.
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: In the second half, it was too many three and
- 1:02:52Speaker 9: out so we didn't sustain any drifts. So for all
- 1:02:55Speaker 9: of our guys who played, it was not good enough
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: and we got a lot to improve upon. And so
- 1:03:00Speaker 9: it's it's not telling two and that's the starting point,
- 1:03:02Speaker 9: right and you can only go up from what we've
- 1:03:04Speaker 9: displayed on Thursday night. We can only get better and
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: grow from it. And our guys have already shown they
- 1:03:10Speaker 9: taken those steps today.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: All right, that's Demico Ryans the're talking about that that
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: was after practice or the weekend, coming off that preseason loss. Again,
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: later in the final hour, we'll hear some more from
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: Brian Chottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach. We'll be back to
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: wrap up an hour number two right here on thirteen
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: under the zone works better if I push the button properly.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: Thought I hit it, didn't hit it well enough.
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: But.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: You know it'll be third and final hour on sports radio.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: You remind me of an MLB umpire right there, Craig.
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: Oh, really well, the pushing and you know, trying to
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: try to get the the challenge announced, but instead of
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: the full thing, you kind of get like at your
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: challenging the pitch.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, there is some of that in and out.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: By the way, how do you feel about all of
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: that about the ABA system.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: I've really enjoyed it, especially because we're starting to see
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: teams really differentiate themselves in terms of the strategy of
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: using the ABS challenge.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: And it's also fascinating to me.
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: Baseball's always been really a sport that has really drawn
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: me in, even over the long dog days of summer
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: of one hundred and sixty two days, because there's no
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: two batters who stand the same way and swing the
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: same way, there's no two pitchers whose stuff and whose
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: delivery is exactly the same, and there's also no two
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: personalities that are the same, and to see how that
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: has interacted with this new innovation in the game is
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: really really exciting for me.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, one thing that.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: People know that I'm a fan of the Dodgers and
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: watching how they've been stumbling and struck along of late
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: that sort of thing. But their television network, and I
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: know that's that's been a big, you know, big part
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: of the discussion with regard to revenues and all this
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: other kind of stuff.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: But I will tell you this.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Their television network, which is Spectrum Sports net LA, is
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: their their TV network has a stable of announcers.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: The lead announcer is Joe Davis play by play announcer,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: but Joe is limited to about I think I read
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: about ninety games a year because of his duties and
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: responsibilities with Fox what he's doing on that, and then
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: there's some off days I think also, and then when
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: you get into September, he's got an NFL package that
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: he does on Sunday for Fox.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: He's like with the number.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Two team, Yeah, Greg Olsen, Yeah, him and Greg Olsen
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: the number two team. So so they mix in a
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: couple of other play by play guys. In fact, I'm
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: trying trying to count it the other ones. Steven Nelson
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: is usually the plug in there. Tim Neverett also is
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: plugged in on some of the telecasts, and they have
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: a rotating cadre of analyst. Oral Herscheizer is the main analyst,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: but he doesn't make that many road trips. He'll go
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: to the really you know, the high profile ones like
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: Wrigley Field or Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park, but if
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: he's in Pittsburgh, he's probably not going. You know, it
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: might it might be Eric carros Uh there, or it
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: could also be Jessica Mendoza. She's one of the rotating
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: analysts there. Rick Munday even comes off radio and works
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: as an analyst on occasion. The point of all of this,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: what I'm saying, is is that they all have different
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: opinions of the ABS system and the umpires, and that
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: includes Oral Hirschheiser, who thinks this is his take on this.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: He believes that that the that the ABS system shows
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: how good the umpires are. He says, you know, he
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: says this, this, this only shows you how good they are,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: by and large.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: I agree with him.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: But when they miss, they miss badly on some I
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: mean they're missing by two full inches below the plate
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: or outside the plate, you know, or high. I've seen
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: that a lot.
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: That doesn't bother me so much, especially early in the game.
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: What will bother me is throughout a game if they're
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: missing the same types of pitches to the same handedness
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: of the batter, and that's when managers will bark at him.
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: Uh yeah, yeah, well even if the team is getting
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: the overturns, right, yeah, right.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Yeah, right exactly, because they don't want to have to
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: waste a challenge or risk a challenge if you will,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: that sort of. But it does make me wonder how
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: often an umpire looks at that when he says, like
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: you said about the chadite, Mike is cutting out, you know,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: whatever catcher is challenging.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: The pitch.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Catchers are right far more often than batters are, and
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: pictures are the worst, by the way, when they've called it.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: I think that other than shoe a Otani, who rarely
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: does it, I think none of the Dodger pitchers are
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I don't know if loud is the right word, but
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: I think they've been instructed don't challenge show a. I
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: think he almost never challenges when he's at the plate
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: let alone on the mound, And of course he hasn't
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: pitched since June, so so that has in facted in.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: But it does make me wonder about some guys should
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: never challenge.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: Andy Pie has should.
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: Never challenge, should never challenge?
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: And I heard who was it?
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: I think it was it might have been Dan Patrick
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: on this show or on one of the guys on
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: the National Network, said that there should be a penalty
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: that if you challenge, whether you're the catcher or the hitter,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: God forbid it to be the pitcher.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: But if you're the catcher of the hitter.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: And you challenge and you're off by more than an inch,
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: the team should lose all the rest of its challenges.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: If I can't remember if it's Dan, I don't want to.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: I don't want to definitely put it on him. If
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: it wasn't him, the penalty's already there. You lose the challenge.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, to get to it's like, you shouldn't be
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: that daft, you shouldn't be.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: That that far off base.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: Imagine it's more than an echin inside the umpire goes
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: by the way, that's an extra strike.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: Wring them up.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, there's another way to look at it possibly,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: So you know, I guess I guess that's one way
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: to think of it as well.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: But it it's amazing when they did.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Now I understand in the high leverage moments in the
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: late innings, what have you got to lose? Right if
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: you're in the eighth or ninth it's kind of like
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: time out. Some football can't take him with you anyway.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: In my mind, I'm thinking, oh, the like the catcher,
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: he's gonna he's gonna mess up his his challenge percentage. Well,
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: sometimes you have to use a challenge because I've also
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: seen it though, to where the catcher challenges a pitch
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: and kind of tilting his head already knowing he probably
- 1:10:24Speaker 5: got it wrong. But you've got a chance to end
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: the game on that pitch, so why not use it?
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: And then I've seen the game continue and things get
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: wacky and they run out of challenges in the ninth inning.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: Well yeah, I've seen that happen a lot or somebody
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: and they'll say, well, they're out of challenge, even though
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: had they been able to challenge, it would have been overturned.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: It would have gone in their favor. But if you
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: spend am Erley, well you want to get somebody mad
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Rick Monday, who can be irascible, eighty years of age.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: He's the he's the radio analyst on the on the
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: Dodgers broadcast, and he's really really good. But he can
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: really be you know, get off my long guy too.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: He hates when batter's challenge like before the third inning,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: same thing, Eric Carros on TV. They hate that, right,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: And my view on that is, if it's really that
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: obvious and really that blatant, go ahead, because if there's
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: a runner in scoring position, you got two outs. I
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: don't care if it is top of the first inning.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: If that pitch is way outside and the umpire calls
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: of a strike, you go ahead and you challenge.
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: Well, who not all first inning or third inning challenges
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: are created equally, right? Are you facing Mislerowski with a
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: base runner on? That might be one of two innings
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: you get a base runner on that afternoon, So if
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: it's a high leverage count, why not.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: Well, it's funny you bring that up because on Saturday
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: there was a pitch that was missed by Missowski in
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: that Saturday evening game. To Otani but he didn't challenge it.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: I was like, oh, challenge it, that's going to be
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: strike too. Sure enough, he winds up strike it out.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: You know, you never know how it might change to
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: get back.
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: And I've seen people lose ball games, actually lose ball
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: games during at bats in which they kept challenges in
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: their pockets. So that sometimes goes to the opposite extreme
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: of it. Look, it's been so much fun. It's almost
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: like what we're missing now with all the automatic line
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: calls in tennis. You combine the accuracy of the machine,
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: which does show the umpires how good they are most days,
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: which does help you get key calls right in big situations,
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: but you don't lose the human element and you don't
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: slow down the game into the mud like basketball replay does.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: Yeah, they've got to do something to fix.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: That, really, really, really badly. Yeah.
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: I just TV partners don't hate it. They're airing more commercials.
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: I can say that we're on the radios.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: You can, but yeah, it gets tedious. I don't think
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: there's any doubt about that. Okay, we want to give
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: away another copy of the magazine, Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Like I said, we're giving away three per show, and
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: so this one's going to be random.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Here's a random b number four, number four.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Today on this Monday afternoon, be number four here in
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: the four o'clock hour to reach us via the talkback
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: microphone the talkback feature on the iHeartRadio app. Again to review,
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: you download the iHeartRadio app on your smartphone. Whether it's
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: an Android or iPhone, doesn't matter. You just you download
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: the app. Really easy to do. You go to your
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: app store whatever, and just you know, iHeartRadio and push
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: the button says get and then maybe your a little
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: double click on the side to install or however that
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: works for you. You download it. It's free, doesn't cost
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: you a penny. So you download the iHeart Radio app.
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: Then afterwards you do a search for AM thirteen under
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: the zone. You just enter AM thirteen under the zone
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: and you'll search Windows, search, bar, search, magnifying glass, whatever
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: it is. It'll pop straight up. And then when it does,
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: then you'll see the little red button with the white microphone,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: that other white button that's kind of triangular shape like
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: an arrowhead whatever, that's just to listen to what's going
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: on the air. The one that you need for the
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: purposes of our magazine giveaways. Is the little red button
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: with the white microphone. So it's the red button with
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: the white microphone. You tap that button and then you
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: leave us a message. It automatically leaves us a voice
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: message there and a talkback microphone. The message is easy
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: when we do it random, you don't guess anything on
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: the trivia. All you have to do is say I
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: want the magazine. That simple, I want the magazine. So
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: you do that, I want the magazine, and if you're
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: the fourth person to do it in line, to do that,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: and again it's completely random, so whoever the fourth person
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: is to enter, then you're going to get the magazine.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: So good luck to you. All right.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: Coming up, we're gonna hear more from Loggorne's head coach
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: Sarkasian and uh we're gonna also here's some more NFL
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: sound Cowboys and Texans coming off their games of the weekend.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: When we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Zone and the iHeartRadio.
- 1:15:11Speaker 11: APPA, we're back. It's the Craig Way Show with Hollow
- 1:15:28Speaker 11: Fame Broadcast. They're in Voice of the Texas Longhorns. Craig Way,
- 1:15:39Speaker 11: all right.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: I gotta admit you have the advantage of me. Here,
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: Jay Krman, your selection here? Why today? Happy birthday, Belinda Carlisle.
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: There you go of the go Gos fame and turning
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: sixty eight today?
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: Is she really I didn't think she was older than me,
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: but she is older than me. But you know, it's.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Funny when they hit big, which was like eighty two
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: I think it was. It was when Linda and I
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: were first dating the first time around.
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: And again people will know my story.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Know that my current wife, Linda, and we dated in
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: the early eighties when we were both quite young, and
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: then we parted as good friends. We each went their
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: separate ways. We each got married and went on with
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: our lives and stuff. And I was married for thirty
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: years and my wife passed away almost ten years ago,
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: and Linda, her first marriage, had ended, and then we
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: happened to run into to one another randomly at an
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: event to see a friend of ours play, and it's
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: first time I'd seen her ever thirty years. And then
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: we got together and we started talking. Next thing, you know,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: we start dating, and then blah blah blah, we wind
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: them getting married. We've been married four years now point
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: was we were dating the first time back in the eighties.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: She was a huge fan of the Go Gos. Really,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: in fact, we were gonna go see them in concert
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: now again we'll remember this, Jake, this is in my
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: concert vending days. But I was not going to work
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: the show that was going to be at Reunion Arena.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: I was going to just take her. We were just
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: gonna go and watch it.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: And one of them, I don't remember which one of
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: the band members might have been Jane, got very ill
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: and they had to like either cancel or postpone the show,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: so we ended up not going at the time. But
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: Linda was always a fan of Blinda and of the
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: Go Gos as well, So happy birthday there to Belinda.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: All Right, the let's hear a little more from Sark. Then.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: I have some thoughts on this ap pole that has
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: come out college football. First of First of all, Start
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: got a big laugh out of this last year.
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: The whole thing about the depth chart.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: Now, on a certain level, the depth chart is important
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: to have it. It does matter, but the coaches know
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: who's going to be doing the playing and what's going on.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: So when there was this crush in this mania by
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: a lot of outlets to put a depth chart out there.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: Start got a chuckle out of it and said, really, okay,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: we'll see how that works out. He was asked on
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Saturday after the scrimmage if there was a timeline for
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: producing a depth chart.
- 1:18:40Speaker 8: Yeah, I would say, you know, coming out of next
- 1:18:43Speaker 8: week scrimmage, I think we need to be really defined
- 1:18:46Speaker 8: in our too deep right, and that's not only on
- 1:18:49Speaker 8: offensive defense.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: I think that's special teams now, but in the same.
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: Breath, I want that everybody on the roster's got to
- 1:18:55Speaker 8: understand nothing set in stone. You know, players earn opportunities
- 1:18:59Speaker 8: throughout a season at any at any juncture, at any moment,
- 1:19:02Speaker 8: and so we're never gonna stop pushing.
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: We're never gonna.
- 1:19:04Speaker 8: Stop trying to develop those developing those guys to become,
- 1:19:07Speaker 8: you know, what they can be. And we've seen that
- 1:19:10Speaker 8: time and time again. We've seen injuries occur at all
- 1:19:13Speaker 8: the different stuff that that we've seen go on as
- 1:19:15Speaker 8: the season goes on. So but I think coming out
- 1:19:18Speaker 8: of next Saturday, you know, being being pretty defined of
- 1:19:21Speaker 8: what are two deep looks like in all three phases
- 1:19:23Speaker 8: I think is important. Today we started with with with
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: Trevor Trevor, Lawrence Connor, Brandon Baker, and Melvin. But again,
- 1:19:34Speaker 8: Dylan played a ton and got his opportunities.
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: But a lot of guys got opportunities today.
- 1:19:38Speaker 8: I mean we we we rolled with three different offensive
- 1:19:40Speaker 8: line groups, so a lot of guys got reps today.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: One other thing that came out of the Saturday scrimmage
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: was a really impressive look on some say and really
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: and truly it hasn't just been the Saturday scrimmage, but
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: as the competition has heated up for the log worns
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: at the running back spot. And while folks have dialed
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: in on and zeroed in on Hollywood Smothers or Elaked Brown,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: that sort of that, Michael Terry, his name's been brought
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: up a lot, Derek Cooper's been brought up a lot,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: and Start pointed out that there was good reason for
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Derek Cooper's name to be bandied about a little bit
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: because he showed out a little.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: Bit on Saturday.
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I really loved Coop.
- 1:20:23Speaker 8: You know, he's a hard charging guy. You know, he
- 1:20:25Speaker 8: plays physical, he plays fast. You know, he's a he's
- 1:20:29Speaker 8: a very natural football player. I don't know if you've
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: seen any of his high school film. But he's a
- 1:20:33Speaker 8: he played defense, he played offense, you know, whatever was
- 1:20:36Speaker 8: needed to be successful, So the game comes pretty naturally
- 1:20:40Speaker 8: to him. I think the area where he had to
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: take the biggest jump was really understanding pass protection, right,
- 1:20:46Speaker 8: and that's like any young runner, right of what that
- 1:20:48Speaker 8: looks like from from uh, you know, it's easy to
- 1:20:51Speaker 8: I don't say easy to run the ball, but running
- 1:20:53Speaker 8: the ball and catching the ball. But but his his
- 1:20:56Speaker 8: understanding of the offense has been very impressive for a
- 1:20:59Speaker 8: young player. I think his physicality, the speed in which
- 1:21:02Speaker 8: he plays the game has been very impressive. But as
- 1:21:05Speaker 8: impressive I think has been his knowledge and willingness to learn.
- 1:21:08Speaker 8: And uh, you know, he's he's done a really good
- 1:21:11Speaker 8: job of of you know, again learning from Real Leak
- 1:21:14Speaker 8: in Hollywood and Ryan Nibblett. But at the same time,
- 1:21:18Speaker 8: not in a negative way, but not taking a back seat,
- 1:21:20Speaker 8: pushing and going forward and and and trying to earn
- 1:21:23Speaker 8: his opportunities.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: And what will did scrimmage be without a review of
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: the performance of the quarterback? Now, there were several you know,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: they they they looked at more obviously than Arch Banning,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: and Arch didn't really even participate that much, and I'll
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: let Sart do the explaining on that, but he was
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: asked for what he thought of what Arch did when
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: he was out.
- 1:21:46Speaker 8: There on the field, right, you know, I felt I
- 1:21:49Speaker 8: felt for Arch and Ryan and Cam and Emmett because
- 1:21:52Speaker 8: they played the first series, then they sat because I
- 1:21:55Speaker 8: didn't want him to be live, uh, And then they
- 1:21:57Speaker 8: played one series in the red zone and then they
- 1:21:59Speaker 8: said and then they didn't come back and play until
- 1:22:02Speaker 8: the second half.
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: So it was a little, I guess would say, a
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: little up and down.
- 1:22:05Speaker 7: Today.
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: I don't think that's really indicative of him not being
- 1:22:09Speaker 8: out in the spring. I thought he's had a great
- 1:22:11Speaker 8: first week and a half of training camp and extremely impressed.
- 1:22:14Speaker 8: Probably wasn't as fair to him today. I wanted them
- 1:22:17Speaker 8: to almost feel like a preseason NFL game season, you know,
- 1:22:20Speaker 8: preseason one game. But at the same token, when we
- 1:22:23Speaker 8: went to thud tempo and it wasn't live, I wanted
- 1:22:25Speaker 8: to try to get him reps, and those reps didn't
- 1:22:27Speaker 8: come until the second half. So I think he can
- 1:22:30Speaker 8: play cleaner than he played today and a little bit
- 1:22:32Speaker 8: more efficient, a little bit more accurate. But there was
- 1:22:35Speaker 8: also some high level plays that were made too. Again,
- 1:22:37Speaker 8: it's the level of consistency that we're fighting for, and
- 1:22:41Speaker 8: I've seen it right the first week and half. And
- 1:22:42Speaker 8: again I think probably you know, blame coach Sark for
- 1:22:46Speaker 8: not being quite as fair to him where I was
- 1:22:48Speaker 8: one one series and then sit for you know, thirty minutes,
- 1:22:51Speaker 8: and then one series and then sit again.
- 1:22:53Speaker 3: So next week we'll be a little bit different format.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Sark coming up tomorrow, and that
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: is following up on today's practice, So we'll hear more
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: from Steve Sarkisian coming up tomorrow, and a little bit
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: more of a follow up on the health situation of
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: the team since they've had that flu bug go through
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: them a little bit. So we'll get some thoughts from
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: Sark on a variety of topics tomorrow. Now, I wanted
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: to go back to the ap pole a little bit
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: because it probably didn't really surprise too many folks the
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: way it was released. Ohio State is going to be
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: number one, so we do know this, assuming assuming the
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: log Worns take care of the business in that season
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: opener coming up two weeks from this Saturday at dk
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: R Texas Memorial Stadium against the Texas State Bobcats. If
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: they win that season opening game, there'll be one to zero.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: And assuming Ohio State its business in the Horseshoe against
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: Ball State to open up the twenty twenty six season,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: Ohio State is, assuming they beat ball State, the number
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: one team in the country will be coming into Austin
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: for that matchup. I don't think anybody was really surprised
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: by that. It was probably going to be that way
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: that they were going to come in And Ohio State
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: managed to draw forty first place votes in that and
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: there were sixty nine votes by sixty nine media members
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: who cover college football for the AP and other news organizations.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: In fact, by a large it's other news organizations. They
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: just happen to have an AP vote, But forty of
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: the sixty nine votes went to Ohio State. So clearly,
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: clearly it was going to be, you know, in the
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: minds of the voters that ohiost he was going to
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: be the team to beat. And you know which you know,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: where the Longhorns are concerned. You know, Sark was fine
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: with that. He was he didn't have he didn't have
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: any issues with that fact that there was a quote
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: from him where he said, I love the polls for
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: college football fans, for the excitement for the marquee matchups,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: all of those things.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: But the polls internally, they just don't matter. They're really irrelevant.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: I think we've gotten to a point now as a
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: team to understand that what matters now is how we
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: play in each and every Saturday, and pretty much all
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: of the coaches in college football echo those sentiments. Now,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: I will add this because I think there's some merit
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: in it. It is the considered opinion by many, well,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: a great many fans, but also many media, including media
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: who might have a vote on the AP Pole or
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: don't have a vote on the AP Pole, But it
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: is the considered opinion by many media members and I
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: think a great many fans at the AP Pole and
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: to a far lesser extent, the Coaches Bowl, but certainly
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: the AP Pole influences the College Football Playoff Committee when
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: they release their initial rankings in November. Now, a lot
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: can happen between you know, September fifth, even August twenty
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: ninth for those playing on the zero week.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: A lot can happen between now and then when you
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: get to.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Those first rankings coming out of November, and it can
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: shake up the rankings quite a bit. But for the
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: teams at or near the top of say the ap
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: pole and we ran down the rankings earlier. But even
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: the top five Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: and the defending national champion the number six, and the
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: rest of the top ten Miami, which actually garnered a
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: first place vote, There's seventh A and m Ole Miss Oklahoma.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: For those schools that are ranked that, I if they're
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: playing well by the time you get to November, and
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: there will already have been some showdown games. Clearly Ohio
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: State Texas will be one of those games. Texas OU
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: will be one of those games. Texas Ole Miss will
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: be one of those games. Ohio State, Indiana, Right is
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Ohio State? Yeah, October seventeenth. I want to make sure
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: that I had.
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: The date right off. I say it is a hard
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: schedule this year. Yeah.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: Yeah, So between now and by the time the first
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: rankings are released, I don't know that it's that it's
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: you know, that big an impact, even if it does
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: have some sort of an impact.
- 1:27:51Speaker 5: How about this, though, Craig, for all of the voters
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: last year who put Texas at the top of their
- 1:27:57Speaker 5: ballots to start the season, and then maybe be felt
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: a whole lot of remorse in between the time that
- 1:28:04Speaker 5: they made their preseason votes and over the first half
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: struggles the Longhorns had to where the Longhorns were nowhere
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: near the top twenty of the eight people when the
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: first CFP rankings right came out. How much of that
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: kind of voters giving up on Texas or measuring Texas
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: against what they expected of them in the preseason, how
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: much of that went on last year, We'll.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: Never really know.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: I started say, you're talking about the AP voters or
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: the College Football playoff voters.
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: Both, especially if you're talking about the way one could
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: influence the other.
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, the Ohio State loss was not
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: that damaging a thing to drop to third after they
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: lost to Ohio State.
- 1:28:43Speaker 5: The Florida loss that was the killer, right. They completely
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: buried Texas after that.
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: And then the close calls, albeit wins, but close calls
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: in over time on the road at Kentucky, on the
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: road at Mississippi State did nothing to to help their
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: status until they got in the last couple of games,
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: and then and then obviously the win over A and
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: M certainly helped where they got close, just not close
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: enough and didn't get enough help from some other ones
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: that might have lost ahead of them.
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I don't recall A and M getting
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: penalized for close wins last year.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: No, No, And and.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: You know it's not a you know, it's a zero
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: sum science really for Texas and what they have to do.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: My point about all of this is that even if
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: you feel and I don't blame you if you do,
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: and I don't blame AP voters if they feel this way,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: Even if you feel that the College Football Playoff Committee
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: in its first rankings, if Ohio State is still unbeaten,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: if they come to Austin, beat Texas, and they win
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: at Indiana, they'll probably deserve to be in that number
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: one spot. But even if Texas defeats Ohio State and
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: defeats Oklahoma, but Oregon and Georgia are both the head
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: of Texas and the Ape pole right now, if they're
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: still in front, even though Georgia will have had a
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: win over Alabama, you know, and Oregon would have had
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: wins as well. If it's like that, then you might
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: have some merit in saying the AP thing you know,
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: might hold a little more water. That theory might hold
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: more water because then at that point you're comparing impressive wins.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: And if you're comparing impressive wins, then probably you know,
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: wins over Ohio State and Oklahoma and even Ole Miss
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: for Texas, assuming those three schools hold up their end
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: of the bargain in their other games, it'd be hard
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: not to envision them being his number one and the
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: reg But because Oregon and Georgia and Notre Dame or Ahead,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: if they have impressive wins, then maybe there might be some.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: Merit in that.
- 1:30:54Speaker 5: And you talk about zero sum math, right, and people
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: comparing wins if these teams were to kind of hold
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: so in the voter's minds, based on what this preseason
- 1:31:02Speaker 5: ranking lays out, you've got A and M eight, Ole
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: Miss nine, Oklahoma ten, LSU eleven. The math says there
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: is no way that all four of those teams can
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: stay in the top eleven.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: Oh, there's no way.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: There are no ties in college football anymore, as we
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: know still are in the NFL.
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: There was a tie the other night in preseason. Did
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: you see that? I miss that. I don't don't I
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: don't watch love preseason. Is it the colch Patriots. There
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: was a tie. That's why I don't watch the preseason.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: Craig Hey, it's still a living, breathing entity in in
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: the regular season.
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: In the NFL, well, that's Truil. There are still ties.
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: That's a whole separate discussion. But anyway, it's it's interesting.
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: It'll be interesting to see when we get to measuring
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: stick season, when you have a good body of work
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: to compare these schools by, does this original AP ranking
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: get reflected in the way teams view a team like
- 1:31:52Speaker 5: A and m Ole, Miss Oklahoma or LSU, who are
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: starting in the top eleven, who the voters think highly
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: of the talent and the roster. But by virtue of
- 1:32:00Speaker 5: the SEC's now nine game schedule, you're gonna see one
- 1:32:04Speaker 5: of those teams lose three games.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and may still get into the playoff, right,
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: depending on depending on what happens.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: So I'm in agreement with you. I you know, it's
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: it's it's.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: Early days, and I usually say a lot of this
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: is going to sort itself out, you know, Like I said,
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: Texas has Ohio State on the schedule, They've got Oklahoma
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: on the schedule, they have a road game at LSU
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: on the schedule. They have a home game against ole
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: Miss on the schedule.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: They play five of the top eleven. They have a
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: road game at A and M on the schedule.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: So that's why, that's why I don't really work up
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: too much about it. And again, if you're a diet
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: in the wood long worn't fan, I completely get it
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: and probably am not in disagreement with you. If by
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: the time the first college Football playoff rankings come out
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: in November, if Texas is unbeaten, meaning by then they
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: will have beaten Ohio State, Oklahoma, and ole Miss just.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: To name those three.
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: And if they're still like number five, number four, you know,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: if they still are, then then I think you have
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: a point.
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: They will be.
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: Well, so they will be if they if they beat
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: all those teams and then drop a game.
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: Because the AP voters love counting the lost.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Column, yeah, they do, absolutely, And that's that zero something
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: we're talking about.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: But for example, here's what I mean. What I mean.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: Oregon opens with Boise State on the FED. They go
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: to Stillwater where they should beat up on Oklahoma State.
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: They have a Friday night game against Portland State, and
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: before November, they do have that road game at USC
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: there is that, then they have UCLA at home.
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: Nebraska at home could.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: Be tricky going to Illinois in late October, and then
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: and in order, so the first rankings I think would
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: come out before their game in Columbus at Ohio State
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: on November seventh.
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: Those first rankings have come out before then, right, So
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: what are you going to evaluate that on? Exactly?
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: So, if let's say they're unbeaten in Texas is unbeaten
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: before that Ohio State game in the rankings come out,
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: if Texas is behind Oregon, then you have a case
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: those of you are arguing about it, because Texas will
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: have had three top ten wins at that point.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: Of course, three.
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: Top ten wins didn't get them in the playoff last
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: year they had three blocks.
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: You're right, though, Craig, I mean bookmark this.
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: That will be the proof in the pudding for folks
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: that say the AP pole has influence, or we could
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: be talking about this as a completely irrelevant conversation.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: That's why I say, don't get too worked up about
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: it right now. Number five and the AP number four
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: in the coaches zero first places votes surprised me yeah, yeah,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: especially since what Notre Dame drew six and they're in
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: the number four spot in the ATAM. Now, Indiana got
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: a first place votes and a lot of and A
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: they're really really good. B they get Ohio stayed at home.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: And see in the minds there's a lot of old
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: school people. This is more evident in the coaches that
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: you're you're the champ till somebody beat you.
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: Yeah, well why not? Why not trust Kurt Signetty. We
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: just saw him do it.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Last year, right, and we'll see what he can do
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: with Josh Hoover this year as opposed to Fernanda Mendoza,
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: so that that's a big part of it.
- 1:35:29Speaker 5: Yeah, and the losses for them up front are a
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: big part, right exactly, and the secondary.
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, We've got more coming up when we
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: continue here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred, The Zone
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: and the IHEARTRADIOU.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: I don't know about you, but I always liked Jeopardy.
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: I always liked this show.
- 1:35:45Speaker 5: Well, I'll be a fan of it for my entire
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: life because Allison has played on it twice.
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: Oh that's right, you told me about that. I remember that.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: That's great. The reason why We bumped back with this.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: Obviously, we had that trivia question last hour about Texas
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: winning a bowl game to complete Mac.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: Brown's first season, and.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: I said it was a team on the Texas schedule
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: this season, so the first correct answer would win a
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. I didn't think
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: we'd have such a variety of responses, but here's a couple.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: For example, Craig, is Riley be out of here in Taylor, Texas?
- 1:36:27Speaker 7: That would be Missouri.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: It would not be Missouri Riley and Riley. Remember, you're
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: not eligible. You've already won Double Bot one. You can't
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: win again, you know what, can't win again inside of
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: thirty days. But you can play for fun, but you
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: can't win. Yes, that's right, You're welcome to play, you
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: just can't collect the prize. After that, somebody else had
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: a different idea, right.
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: Craig, Way, that would be the Texas A and M.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: Haggis no non Texas A and M. Remember that was
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: a comp.
- 1:37:00Speaker 5: Friends, That was a you need to hook up, get
- 1:37:04Speaker 5: the hook up for that.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Can't hook at. Texas A and M was a conference.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: In fact, it was the game Texas played before this
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: ball game Chris Stockton the walk off field goal. They
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: won twenty six to twenty four. Ricky Williams broke the
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: college football all time rushing record in that game. It
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: was the next game after and it was a bowl game.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: And we did get the correct response on the next person.
- 1:37:26Speaker 3: This is Robert Baker. The answer is Mississippi State.
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: Very you did win, Robert, So congratulations Mississippi State coached
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: by Jackie Cheryl, and Texas won that contest.
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: I score thirty eight to eleven.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Ricky Williams had a final big game as a collegiate
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: on that So, Robert, you'll win a copy of Dave
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Maxine. And did we get the caller
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: the random winner in the four o'clock hour on the
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: fourth I think.
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: It was on the fourth call. We were doing that
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: for this for this four o'clock hour on the magazine?
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: Do we not? Do we not get that?
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: We may have got wet to look it back up
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: and see you've got it somewhere.
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll have to. I'll have to check the off
- 1:38:10Speaker 5: to check it out. The grid that's right, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:38:12Speaker 5: check the grid.
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: I forgot about that, Okay, Now back to Brian Shotneiner,
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: the Cowboys head coach, was asked to evaluate his quarterbacks.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: And of course, remember Dak Prescott did not play in
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: the win on Saturday, Uh, but he did see both,
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: uh Joe Milton and Sam Howell play.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: So how about his review.
- 1:38:34Speaker 10: It's hard to speak on quarterbacks when you don't watch
- 1:38:36Speaker 10: the film, but both guys function upstanding. You know, they
- 1:38:39Speaker 10: both were tasked with going out there and playing against
- 1:38:41Speaker 10: heavy pressure. You know, a Mike McDonald aidender day. You know,
- 1:38:45Speaker 10: defense is going to be a heavy pressure team. And
- 1:38:47Speaker 10: they brought a bunch of things against us that, you know,
- 1:38:49Speaker 10: not that we weren't prepared for, but that maybe we
- 1:38:51Speaker 10: didn't handle very well. So they were taking some shots,
- 1:38:53Speaker 10: but they just hung in there and made the throws
- 1:38:55Speaker 10: when they had to make them. And they were both
- 1:38:57Speaker 10: very efficient, you know, and that's what we want, you know,
- 1:38:59Speaker 10: we want to we evaluate quarterbacks, but a couple of things,
- 1:39:01Speaker 10: one moving the team scoring points and then to protecting
- 1:39:04Speaker 10: the football.
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: And I thought both guys did that.
- 1:39:05Speaker 10: Joe with his legs, I mean, you know, he's pretty
- 1:39:09Speaker 10: much unstoppable on quarterback sneaks, and uh so it didn't
- 1:39:12Speaker 10: take me long to figure out that I wasn't gonna
- 1:39:14Speaker 10: do anything different.
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: I was gonna let him sneak it. And uh, you know,
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: a big, powerful man. But they both played well, all right.
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: And then one about the running back position.
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: Is it difficult to evaluate the running back spot when
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: the offensive line didn't get quite the push he wants
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: to see?
- 1:39:27Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 1:39:28Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean you know you got to you gotta
- 1:39:29Speaker 10: get what was blocked. And again I thought all of
- 1:39:31Speaker 10: our guys ran hard. I mean, give it up from
- 1:39:33Speaker 10: Elie Davis. I mean, you know, just the holiday horror.
- 1:39:37Speaker 10: I mean, it just it wasn't a it was a
- 1:39:38Speaker 10: Holida day. All day was a holiday.
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: But I mean he's.
- 1:39:41Speaker 10: Amazing Christmas Day, Thanksgiving Day, whatever.
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: The day is, fourteenth August. I love that. I love
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: that guy.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: Okay, all right, we'll be back to wrap up today's
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: edition of the program. I'm thirteen under the Zone.
