- 0:12Hello friends. It's shown here.
- 0:14It is Thursday, it's the 25th of April, it is Anzac Day.
- 0:20That is the day that we pause, we don't go to work and we get
- 0:25to remember the incredible sacrifice of so many people who
- 0:29have fought for the freedom that we get to enjoy.
- 0:33And I don't know what your Anzac Day traditions look like or what
- 0:36this day brings for you, but it is a truly momentous day in my
- 0:43life these days, seeing as two years ago on this day, standing
- 0:48on the beach at the dawn service.
- 0:50Yeah, one of those rare moments where I literally heard the
- 0:54voice of God speaking to me, telling me that this was my
- 0:58calling to enter into his service as an Army chaplain.
- 1:03And here I am two years later, not just participating in the
- 1:07service, but actually taking part in leading some of the main
- 1:11service in Hobart, which is kind of mind blowing and and yeah,
- 1:16just so encouraging. So I would encourage you,
- 1:18friend, What is God prompting in your heart?
- 1:21What is He saying? This is what I have in store for
- 1:24you. Listen for that voice.
- 1:27Because we just don't know what's around the corner.
- 1:29We don't know the plans that God has for us, the plans that he
- 1:33has put together carefully from the very beginning to use all of
- 1:37those gifts and talents that you think really don't make much
- 1:40sense. But God's Kingdom, it all makes
- 1:42perfect sense. So today, today's a glorious day
- 1:46of remembrance and a wonderful day for me personally.
- 1:50So I pray that you get to take a moment and if you are not in
- 1:54this part of the world, then this might not make much sense
- 1:56to you. But this is the day that
- 1:57Australia and New Zealand and the way that we joined together
- 2:01and fought together in those conflicts, we celebrate that and
- 2:05we celebrate the peace that we get to enjoy.
- 2:07So friends, for the peace we enjoy, we are most grateful.
- 2:13And unfortunately, in today's reading, there is not much peace
- 2:17after David has welcomed home his son Absalom.
- 2:20Unfortunately, Absalom rebels against him and it all goes pear
- 2:25shaped and we see the conflict that will be part of this family
- 2:29all too often play out. So let's read that together.
- 2:33Second Samuel Chapter 15. After this, Absalom brought a
- 2:47chariot and horses, and he hired 50 bodyguards to run ahead of
- 2:51him, and he got up early every morning and went out to the gate
- 2:55of the city. When people brought a case to
- 2:58the king for judgement, Absalom would ask where in Israel they
- 3:02were from, and they would tell him their tribe.
- 3:05Then Absalom would say, you've really got a strong case here.
- 3:10It's too bad the king doesn't have anyone to hear it.
- 3:13I wish I were the judge. Then everyone could bring their
- 3:17cases to me for judgement, and I would give them justice.
- 3:21When people tried to bow before him, Absalom wouldn't let them.
- 3:25Instead, he took them by the hand and kissed them.
- 3:29Absalon did this with everyone who came to the king for
- 3:32judgement, and so he stole the hearts of all the people of
- 3:36Israel. After four years, Absalom said
- 3:40to the king, Let me go to Hebron to offer a sacrifice to the Lord
- 3:44and fulfil the vow I made to him.
- 3:47For while your servant was at Geshur in Aram, I promised to
- 3:51sacrifice to the Lord in Hebron if he would bring me back to
- 3:55Jerusalem. All right, the king told him.
- 3:59Go and fulfil your vow. So Absalom went to Hebron, and
- 4:04while he was there he sent secret messengers to all the
- 4:08tribes of Israel to stir up a rebellion against the king.
- 4:12As soon as you hear the Rams horn, his message read.
- 4:16You either say Absalon has been crowned king in Hebron.
- 4:21He took 200 men from Jerusalem with him as guests, but they
- 4:26knew nothing of his intentions. While Absalom was offering the
- 4:29sacrifices he sent for, a heifer Fell one of David's councillors
- 4:34who lived in Gilo. Soon many others also joined
- 4:38Absalom and the conspiracy gained momentum.
- 4:42A messenger soon arrived in Jerusalem to tell David all
- 4:47Israel has joined Absalom in a conspiracy against you.
- 4:51Then we must flee at once, or it will be too late, David urged
- 4:55his men. Hurry, If we get out of the city
- 4:58before Absalom arrives, both we and the city of Jerusalem will
- 5:02be spared from disaster. We are with you, his advisors
- 5:06replied. Do what you think is best.
- 5:09So the king and all his household set out at once.
- 5:13He left no one behind except ten of his concubines to look after
- 5:17the palace. The King and all his people set
- 5:20out on foot, pausing at the last house to let all the King's men
- 5:25move past to lead the way. There were 600 men from Gath who
- 5:29came with David along with the King's bodyguard.
- 5:33Then the king turned and said to Itai, a leader of the men from
- 5:37Gath, Why are you coming with us?
- 5:40Go on back to King Absalom, for you are a guest in Israel, a
- 5:45foreigner in exile. You arrived only recently.
- 5:49And should I force you today to wander with us?
- 5:53I don't even know where we will go.
- 5:55Go back and take your Kingsman with you, and may the Lord show
- 5:59you His unfailing love and faithfulness.
- 6:03But I said to the King, I vowed by the Lord and by your own life
- 6:09that I will go wherever my Lord the King goes.
- 6:12So no matter what happens, whether it means life or death,
- 6:17David replied. Alright, come with us.
- 6:20So it's I and all his men and their families went along.
- 6:24Everyone cried loudly as the king and his followers passed
- 6:28by. They crossed the Kidron Valley
- 6:31and Len went out toward the wilderness.
- 6:34Zadok and all the Levites also came along carrying the Ark of
- 6:39the Covenant of God. They set down the Ark of God,
- 6:43and Abiathar offered sacrifices until everyone had passed out of
- 6:46the city. Then the king instructed Zadok
- 6:49to take the Ark of God back to the city.
- 6:53If the Lord sees fit, David said he will bring me back to see the
- 6:57ark and the Tabernacle again, but if he is through with me,
- 7:01then let him do what seems best to him.
- 7:05The king also told Zadok the priest, Look, here is my plan.
- 7:09You and Abiathar should return quietly to the city with your
- 7:14son Ahimaaz and Abiathar's son Jonathan.
- 7:18I will stop at the shallows of the Jordan River and wait there
- 7:21for a report from you. So Zadok and Abiathar took the
- 7:26Ark of God back to the city and stayed there.
- 7:29David walked up the road to the Mount of Olives, weeping as he
- 7:34went. His head was covered and his
- 7:37feet were bare as a sign of mourning, and the people who
- 7:40were with him covered their heads and wept as they climbed
- 7:43the hill. When someone told David that his
- 7:46advisor, a hyphal, was now backing Absalom, David prayed
- 7:52all Lord let a hyper fell give Absalom foolish advice.
- 7:58When David reached the summit of the Mount of Olives, where
- 8:01people worship God, Hushai, the archive was waiting there for
- 8:06him. Hushai had torn his clothing and
- 8:09put dirt on his head as a sign of mourning, but David told him
- 8:14if you go with me, you will only be a burden.
- 8:18Return to Jerusalem until Absalom.
- 8:21I will now be your advisor, O King, just as I was your
- 8:25father's advisor in the past. Then you can frustrate and
- 8:29counter a hydrophilus. Advice.
- 8:32Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, will be there, tell them about
- 8:37the plans being made in the King's palace, and they will
- 8:40send their sons, A Hymers and Jonathan to tell me what is
- 8:44going on. So David's friend Hushai
- 8:48returned to Jerusalem, getting there just as Absalom arrived.
- 9:03Lord, in this reading we hear of David just letting go of his
- 9:07plans and acquiescing to you as his God, saying that if his time
- 9:15of ruling was coming to an end, so be it.
- 9:17May your will be done. Oh Lord, what an example.
- 9:22How tightly do we hold on to our own plans?
- 9:26How hard do we find it to let go of the things that we so badly
- 9:30want to happen that we've been working towards?
- 9:34But Lord, you have a plan for each of us.
- 9:37You have a path that You want us to tread and Lord, when that
- 9:42moment comes in our lives, when You show us what You have before
- 9:47us, help us to put Your plans ahead of our own so that we can
- 9:54live our lives fully in Your service, because that's what You
- 9:59have made us for. To live lives of service to Your
- 10:03Kingdom and nothing else is going to bring us more
- 10:06satisfaction and fulfilment and use our gifts more fully than
- 10:12what you have planned for us. You who know us better even than
- 10:16ourselves. Thank you, Jesus, that You would
- 10:21invest in us and that You would call us into Your service in
- 10:27this way so we offer our lives to You to be used in any way
- 10:33that you see fit to Your glory. We pray all of this in your
- 10:38name, Amen.
