- 0:00Happy Friday morning, everybody. Just like clockwork, it's
- 0:07raining on this Friday in St. Louis, MO.
- 0:13I'm telling you, it's like a conveyor belt.
- 0:16It won't stop. It's sunny on Monday, Tuesday,
- 0:21Wednesday, sometimes Thursday. Then it rains Friday, Saturday,
- 0:26Sunday, and then it's sunny on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 0:31Thursday, and then it rains on Friday, Saturdays.
- 0:36So it's raining today and our races, the summer national races
- 0:43tonight, 30 minutes from my house at Tri-City Speedway in
- 0:49Granite City, IL. We are canceled tonight.
- 0:53Canceled because it's raining and we're running on dirt.
- 0:59That that's the bitch about dirt racing.
- 1:03It's raw dirt. And when it rains, it's it's a
- 1:06muddy mess. It might as well be porky to
- 1:09pick. You get to the racetrack and
- 1:12it's like, Oh my God, get me some boots.
- 1:14Let's lay some hay around here. I had a buddy.
- 1:19I had a buddy. Clyde.
- 1:22Dave Powers. We call him Clyde.
- 1:24I haven't seen, I haven't seen Clyde in a while.
- 1:27But anyway, he went to a dirt race with me for his first time
- 1:31ever because he's one of my old asphalt ASA buddies.
- 1:36And we went to it was Clarksville, TN.
- 1:39He went to Clarksville with me and you know, Clarksville's got
- 1:43that real red dirt and he shows up, goes into pit area and, you
- 1:49know, some of Clarksville's got some rock or grass.
- 1:53But this particular time at Clarksville years ago, there's
- 1:57dirt everywhere. And of course, we're asphalt
- 1:59guys, and this is in my early dirt days.
- 2:02He goes, Oh my God, you want me to go down and get some hay and
- 2:06put around here? It was so damn funny because
- 2:10it's true. If you're a dirt racer, it's all
- 2:14normal to you. But when you're asphalt, you
- 2:17know the asphalt tracks, you know, you're used to having
- 2:20decent work areas, asphalt or something like that.
- 2:24But when you go to these damn dirt tracks, you just curb plunk
- 2:27your ass right on grass or dirt, you know, like a kid out, like a
- 2:32kid out in the yard playing. But we got used to it and, and I
- 2:39do have to give Clyde an Atta boy because nowadays when all
- 2:43the big, big dirt teams, when they unload, the first thing you
- 2:47do is they lay down this real nice tarp and all the big dirt
- 2:52guys, now they operate on that big tarp.
- 2:56So it is nice to see everybody control their workspace at these
- 3:00dirt tracks. But never forget, Clyde, should
- 3:03we put some hay down here? So it's not fun to race when
- 3:09there's been rain. It it it becomes a cluster.
- 3:12And I mean, it destroys. Hell, I remember it's rained and
- 3:16you don't even race and it just wipes the truck and trailer out
- 3:20because everybody's stomping through the mud and you spend
- 3:23the next day washing everything and you haven't even raced.
- 3:27So rain and dirt racing do not match.
- 3:33OK, today's subject. They are going to race and life
- 3:42is going to go on with or without you.
- 3:47So I know you heard it, but let me let me kind of say it again
- 3:50this way. Eddie Balkovic.
- 3:53Eddie just texted me. He says no coffee with Kenny.
- 3:56You know what Eddie? I slept really good.
- 3:59I feel rested today. I went to bed about 10:30 last
- 4:03night and woke up about 8:00 today.
- 4:07So a good eight hours. Sleeper slows.
- 4:10I'll see what already has to say.
- 4:12All right, I'm going to say it one more time because I I want
- 4:14to hear myself too. Life will go on and they will
- 4:21race with or without you. Had a friend of mine called me
- 4:28yesterday. I'm not going to say his name
- 4:30because I like him. And when we got off the phone, I
- 4:33thought that'd be a good coffee with Kenny.
- 4:37He said, well, we blew a motor. Looks like we're going to be out
- 4:41for two weeks. And and although I really care
- 4:46about him and I really like him, something overcome me and, and I
- 4:50said nobody will miss you. And we both kind of laughed.
- 4:57I, I, I know I'm going to repeat myself again.
- 5:00Don't get mad at me, but I want to hear myself again one more
- 5:02time. And then I will not repeat
- 5:04myself again. He said to me, we blew a motor,
- 5:08looks like we're going to be out a couple weeks.
- 5:11I said nobody will miss you. And then we laughed about it.
- 5:17We talked about it. I said, let me explain.
- 5:24Competition will kill you, said. For example, I said I was going
- 5:30to Cabo a week or so ago in my competition.
- 5:34They were happy, they smiled, even though I might not win.
- 5:42They got to battle me. So I'm I'm going to be in the
- 5:44battleground. Competition's funny, especially
- 5:50dirt racers, because usually around home here, you know,
- 5:54there's a couple races that you can run on a Saturday.
- 5:57You can run pevely or you can run highland.
- 6:00So these dirt racers, if there was a true meaning of cherry
- 6:04picking, you really can't cherry pick.
- 6:08Well, since I was in Kabul, hell, they was happy to get rid
- 6:11of my ass. Dirt racing is like that.
- 6:17If you don't show up, they don't care.
- 6:20Hell, they'd rather win. If there was only 10 cars there,
- 6:22I won and we laughed about it. It's so true.
- 6:30Now my face is going to get very serious at this time.
- 6:34Another example, we lost Dale Senior.
- 6:41Now this is a more serious one. And this one shocked me too.
- 6:45This was a life lesson for me. Dale Senior lost his life on a
- 6:54Sunday in the Daytona 500 on a Sunday.
- 7:00And then we went Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
- 7:04Four days went by and on that Friday we were on the track that
- 7:09morning at Rockingham. So I learned a big lesson when
- 7:12Dale Senior died. You know, you, you would think
- 7:16that's the day the music would stop.
- 7:20But no life goes on with or without you.
- 7:26And they're going to race with or without you.
- 7:31Now in the truck and trailer that night, going home, somebody
- 7:34might go, what happened to so and so?
- 7:37And they're like, oh, I don't know.
- 7:39But in their heart of all hearts, they're happy to get rid
- 7:42of your ass. I'll leave you with this,
- 7:46everybody. And I will tell you the name of
- 7:48this one, David Ift, my original crew chief back in 1989.
- 7:54David's a legend. He's a he's a gold wrench crew
- 7:57chief for Kel Yarborough. And I've told you his name a
- 8:00couple times. But David, if David, if he's a,
- 8:03he's a gangster and he taught me, he taught me a valuable
- 8:07lesson when I was about 2223 years old, maybe 25, I think 25
- 8:14about 1989 in 1989. David, if said race is a merry
- 8:22go round, it will throw you off. You got to hang on.
- 8:28So take a deep breath everybody. You aren't all what you think
- 8:32you are and neither am I. Just when you think, well, I
- 8:36hell, I'm not going well, guess what?
- 8:38They don't care. They don't care.
- 8:43I, I never think I'm anybody now I have fun.
- 8:46I have fun, act a little silly times, but just because you're
- 8:52not going to go, they don't care.
- 8:56The sport is not going to stop, life is not going to stop.
- 9:01Everything's going to go on with or without you.
- 9:06So choose your decisions wisely. They don't care and that's life.
- 9:13Have a great Friday, everybody.
