- 0:56episode special and I've got a treat for you. Baseball season again just about
- 1:00a couple weeks ago, and so today's stories actually got a pretty uh interesting
- 1:07baseball related theme. This is a very rare program. It's from the anthology
- 1:12series The Wor Summer Theater. WR was the New York flagship station of the
- 1:21Mutual Network, where many programs, including The New Adventures of Neural Woolf,
- 1:26Father Brown and Can You Top This originated. And I'll talk a little bit
- 1:30more about this after the program, But now, in honor of the great
- 1:36Game of Baseball, bringing a most unusual and interesting half hour from August the
- 1:41thirteenth, nineteen forty two from the WR Summer Theater, The Mystery of the
- 1:48Perfect Throw from left Field and the Conga Dancers Aunt This is not Juba.
- 1:56Welcome you to the wl Last Summer Theater, where we do many different kinds
- 1:59of show suggested or written by the boys and girls of the War staff.
- 2:02Tonight it's the Mystery of the Perfect Throw from Left Field and the Conga Dancers
- 2:07Ant. That's the title, and you'll find all the promised elements in this
- 2:10cheerful offering that we extracted from the typewriter of Bob Simon, who looks after
- 2:15count Nuity is a worar. Among those present in the Mystery of the Perfect
- 2:19Throw from Left Field and the Conga Dancers ANT are Helen Clair, who plays
- 2:23Dolly Billion, a radio personality, and Peter Donald who is Dan Kitty the
- 2:27clown fire. This story starts with a station break, that's the few seconds
- 2:30between the two radio programs. In just a moment, will present Dolly Billion
- 2:35in her seventh program today, Dolly Billion, the million Dollar personality with thousands
- 2:39of friends. Well, this Dolly Vision, who apparently discusses a different subject
- 2:43on every one of the seven or more daily broadcast, is set for her
- 2:46sports program. So is the proprietor of the Amb's handby Bar, and so
- 2:52are as customers. Both of them Hello, fans for and wide all about
- 3:01the countryside. This is Dolly by Golly, and that fan fair was the
- 3:06play of the day, which happened just about an hour ago in the Twilight
- 3:07League game between the Nose Socks and the Moon. And that play fan wasn't
- 3:12a play at all, no surree, believe you me. It was a
- 3:15dissertation by an umpire or if he himself called himself a crown Pire Daniel Kitty
- 3:21by name. If you heard my play by play broadcast of the game earlier
- 3:23this evening, you remember I told you how he took over for Sam Slater,
- 3:27the regular umpire. It was getting late, Sam had to be somewhere
- 3:30else, and the Crown Pile volunteered. He had an umpire suit and everything.
- 3:35And then what I'm asking Fletch, our engineer, to put on a
- 3:38recording of that play exactly as I broadcasted, so as to bring it all
- 3:42back to your fans. All right, Flett, let's have that recording.
- 3:51You might turn him out a thanks nobody. She did tell you about that,
- 3:59Emmy, and you, yeah, that's what happens when you play a
- 4:00thirty three PM recording on the seventy eight A PM Turnting. Hi, sure,
- 4:04miss surfers. Maybe they got it fixed now or excuse me, Andy,
- 4:09but I do not want to hear about that play again. You don't
- 4:12want to hear what that dope did? That dope? That's clown fire.
- 4:16Oh that dope that's me, Dan Kitty? Well, what do you know?
- 4:20Glad to make some as the kid Kitty is correct from Dan Kitty,
- 4:25Well, brother Kitty, I wouldn't have known you without that umpire suit that's
- 4:28in my bag here. I don't wear it out to eat lime surface Joe
- 4:30surface. Well, as I was going to say, I was at that
- 4:33game, and I don't understand how you could call that man safe at home
- 4:36when the left fielder's throw hadn't beaten by ten feet a perfect throw, a
- 4:41clean tag, and you call the runners state. I suppose that's clown firing.
- 4:46Well out, clown firing. That's just hoking things up a little.
- 4:48See instead of just waving a man out, I holler ah, say people
- 4:55notice that that ah. And then on a close play at one of the
- 4:59bags, run a slide. All right, what do I do? I
- 5:01slide in with him and call it from the bag. When I hit my
- 5:04pitch ball. I don't just say take your base. I take him by
- 5:08the arm, walk down a feast with him, and just as I get
- 5:11there, I pull him a bottle of beer. I kept hitting with a
- 5:14sidle in my suit. That goes bige. That's so itself is a caution.
- 5:16Oh it's got more and bigger pocket scenario. The runner was still out.
- 5:20Sorry, Joseph. The throw was perfect, but remember it was getting
- 5:25dark and there was a lot of dew on the ground. The ball was
- 5:28hit a long way and it rolled. How was it when it came in
- 5:32dry? An old amateur trick, Joseph, throwing in a ball you got
- 5:35in your pocket when you can't get after the ball it was hit. We're
- 5:39observing, don't you. Yeah, that's important. You gotta want those things,
- 5:42Joseph. You know what it takes to be a detective. That's what
- 5:44it takes to be an umpire. You're not a detective too, are you?
- 5:46No? But I'm interested? And just what is your business? Chain
- 5:49stores? That's what I'm in town about. Well, I heard about this
- 5:53ball game, and I thought maybe they don't need an umpire. I always
- 5:56take my stuff with me, just in case, and sure, enough,
- 5:59doesn't Sam slide that have to get back to his store before the game is
- 6:00oven? Oh? Hello, Chief, while it be this time? Burgary
- 6:04Huggy here? Who are you? You haven't heard of him? Chief?
- 6:09Well that's Dan Kitty. The clown fires. You should have seen the one
- 6:13he tried the pull, Chief, you should have seen that probably. Yeah,
- 6:16how amby? You seen anybody strange here in the last half hour?
- 6:19So, oh, there's that clown fire. We know all about where he's
- 6:24been, but somebody cracked the safe of the drumming him. Hotel and a
- 6:26loop with a lot of cash, the manager says, inside job, Chief
- 6:30looks not it's funny. What's funny about it? I was just saying detecting
- 6:33was up my alley. Well, I think we'll be able to handle it
- 6:35out outside. Help an Joel. You've never failed, Chief, But he's
- 6:40very observant. This clown fire. Yeah, standing in town clown while overnight
- 6:45and tomorrow, you know, I think I'll check in at that hotel you
- 6:47mentioned. It's the only one we have, but pretty snazzy, real room
- 6:51dancing, Turkish baths, hilarium and after dinner concerts in the lobby by the
- 6:55ludvig Van Beethoven swing trio and miss hey you with a priority's teeth, I'd
- 7:13like to register. Oh just a moment, sir, room turk has been
- 7:16very busy. But mister Wesley, mister well, I'm sorry, sir,
- 7:23it's been a great deal of activity. Yeah, burglary, Oh no,
- 7:26I'm inside job? Or isn't it really all right? Do I sign here?
- 7:30Any old room with battel do? Yes? Mister? Is it?
- 7:32Mister yeah? What are you so jittery about? Mister Wepley? Is it?
- 7:38Wepley? What? You're not expecting the murder around here? Are you?
- 7:41I said you won't expect no murder? Wild never mind? Give me
- 7:44your key, but you have bet he's sure I left it on the rack
- 7:46as I came in, Well, not as I thought I did. It's
- 7:50not there now are you sure you had? Itch? Listen, son,
- 7:54if you call it a bank full of umpires tools around with you, you'll
- 7:57be sure that's very peculiars. That makes two? Do what so burglaries in
- 8:01this place tonight? So case I have a personal interest? Are you a
- 8:05detective? Well? Practically better known around here is an unplied Here's my business
- 8:09car way. This is nothing about detection or umpiring. No, I make
- 8:13my living by traveling for chain of chain stores a lot China stores that sells
- 8:18change. See each stowing. The chain sells change, and I travel around
- 8:20in trains keep track of changes in the chain, so when there's new change
- 8:24oratory, they get enough change to keep to the way the other chain chain
- 8:26stores. Trouble is the change change, so fashion don't know what range of
- 8:28change which chain is selling. Sometimes you see train change in your own chain.
- 8:31It's a brains trame rights to change change train. Mister Wepley. Now
- 8:33how about that burglary? Oh well, well it was like this. I
- 8:37opened the seave to count offication and found several large stacks and bills missing.
- 8:41That did you see you were a detective? Well, I think I could
- 8:46help you. Maybe turn on that radio there, Well, it helps me
- 8:48face very ways. Some people are too nosy to live. You'll find that
- 8:54out, wise guy. Could that be personal prying on the station? Mister
- 9:03Webbley, And you wish you may prefer this one up here. Some people
- 9:09are too nosy to live, too nosy to live, to knowsy to live,
- 9:13know to live? My friend, open up that machine radio phonograph.
- 9:20But switch it from this record over the radio. Huh hey, wait a
- 9:24minute, where did you get this record? I don't know. It isn't
- 9:28part of our regular collection. That's mostly cello. So now what does that's
- 9:35our drummer practicing in the grill. We have a famous conga band and the
- 9:41famous dancing team to entertain our guests. That's the picture up there, Bromba
- 9:45and Grempa. The lady is Grimpa. Oh now we prefer not to have
- 9:50our guests do that. What am I done? Conga dots small blessed appreciation?
- 9:56Yes, like this, but it doesn't know. Oh you mean this?
- 10:01Oh? How please? Somebody else coming and register her? Why?
- 10:05That's mister surface Daniel found the place all rot to see. Yeah, oh
- 10:09but my bag, I just flew out. I just don't understand it.
- 10:13Well, I can understand how things are here tonight. She person was telling
- 10:16me all about this burglary. I suppose has you with six is and seven?
- 10:18Yeah, I'm working on it, though I saw my unofficial course.
- 10:22I want to talk it over with me. Sure you see, I don't
- 10:24know this town the way you would live in here. Only let's go up
- 10:30to my room. Huh, I don't want to be disrespectful about that music.
- 10:33Very good son, after you. You know, Joe, I have
- 10:35my serious moments, especially when there's murder possible. What was that? M
- 10:54say? Nice room? Take there? Yes, I see what you see?
- 11:00Well, how did my bag get up here? All things a little
- 11:03mixed up? The old coming hand tonight. I suppose Weffy just forgot he
- 11:05had a set up before he gave me a room. A good point,
- 11:09Daniel. Of course it might not be your bag. That's mine. Everything
- 11:13in it there ought to me. Well, let's pick her up. Yeah,
- 11:16feels about us heavy as she did. You always strap it that tight,
- 11:18now, Joe, that's good observation. That's not how I strap it.
- 11:22Somebody's been poking around it. I guess thanks for calling it to my
- 11:24attention. You're not gonna check up now, I guess not. Or you
- 11:30think I should? Well, I would if it was my bag. Nothing
- 11:33extra valuable in it. See say, here's a real messer clan. So
- 11:39you mean those neck ties it's missing. Somebody's lifting my umpire suit, your
- 11:43monkey suit with a big part of yeah that one. Yeah, I'll tell
- 11:46you what I'll do I'll put this to the manager, not him, the
- 11:48manager. Managers obvious. Please you'll see we'll get the action. Hello,
- 11:54I'm calling for mister Kitty, room three o six. Where in places is
- 11:58mister Kinney's monkey suit? Where's his umpire suit? I cough with big pockets
- 12:03that pass pat, I said, Oh, the ballad? What do you
- 12:09think the ballad has it? They thought of me depressing it did, thanks
- 12:13Joe. Okay, that's okay with mister Kinney. Quick service they have here.
- 12:16Funny Wesley didn't know about it. Yeah, that Wesley name, odd
- 12:20little character, isn't he saw the leaves change around? Yeah? A couple
- 12:24of grand as much as answer a couple of grand in the fifty callous,
- 12:28I'd say, Oh, that doesn't seem like him. He's so correct.
- 12:31Oh, say you know that conger team they have here, Groomber and Grember.
- 12:37Well, apart from that, what about him? Oh, nice quat
- 12:39people, good dancers, la best. I think I'd like to look them
- 12:43over. I want to ask you a questions, Joseph, you have just
- 12:46a touch of the mind either about you. What makes you think they robbed
- 12:48the safe? Ah? Maybe a hunch. Look, I'm dropping the grill.
- 12:52Oh when they work an hour or so. Yeah, I'll be happy
- 12:54to introduce you. I'll be seeing you. Yeah, I'll be seeing you,
- 12:56Joseph. Hello, Hello, is it too late to talk to the
- 13:03ballot? Okay, I guess I'll have to wait. Hello, some people
- 13:11are too nosy to leave. You'll find that out. Why? Oh,
- 13:16now, what's this stuff again? What's the end? Let's hear that record
- 13:20again? That's no record? Hello? Hello, Mike party hung up here?
- 13:31You are? Hello? Mister Say what do you mean by that gag?
- 13:35What do you mean by playing? What you're talking about? But I
- 13:39do want to have an interview with you tomorrow morning. Provide the Leprety broadcast.
- 13:43Oh well, i'll tell you, sister, I'm working tomorrow. If
- 13:46you want an interview, make me the Drummingham Grill in an hour. Hey,
- 13:48wait a minute, I've never seen you. How will I know you
- 13:50by my voice? Hello? Say? Did you hang up? Hello?
- 14:00Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello? Hello
- 14:11Tom? Are you waiting for someone, mister Kitty? Oh yes, mister
- 14:16Webbie approximately for two thousand dollars. I'm not sure I understand you. Well,
- 14:20I am the exhibition Dancing the Grill start suorlie? Huh, very too?
- 14:26Thank you? That's grand too, brand I beg your pardon, no
- 14:28offense. Hello, it's the cloud pile. Why, miss brilliant? Why
- 14:39is that about clown fire? Oh? That's cute. Show. Are you
- 14:41take your decisions fast? Don't you fast and correct? How about going down
- 14:46the grill? Well it might be a little noisy down there, so let's
- 14:50say that. I'll tell me how did you get to be a clown fire?
- 14:54It's cute? So are you? We didn't put that record on again?
- 15:00Record that reminds me? Won't you tell me what it takes to be
- 15:03your compire? Let's stand down to the grill and I'll tell you. You
- 15:07see, that's something I began as a sideline. My all year around business
- 15:09is traveling for China chain stores. That's the changing stores. The sells change.
- 15:13Well, it's going the chain sells change, and I travel around in
- 15:16pains to keep track of change in the change. So when there's new change
- 15:18territory and it all started with a change you changed for a dangerous stranger.
- 15:30Natural enough, young lady, what do you need to tell one chain from
- 15:33another observation? What do you need to be an umpire observation? What do
- 15:37you need to be a detective? Who's a detective? At the moment you're
- 15:39sitting with one that's cute? So are you? Hey, that's why we
- 15:43came in, But you're still cute? Is that observation? Oh? Look,
- 15:46any dope would all that. But if you want observation, you broke
- 15:50off an engagement a little while ago. That's none of your business. Observation
- 15:54is so that is? Oh would you know anything about my engagement? I
- 15:58don't. I just no, you broke it off lately, probably enough for
- 16:00the temper here, my dear. Maybe one of the things you told him
- 16:04was he was a tight one. How long have you been hanging around this
- 16:08town? I got into day? Who's been telling you? Nobody? Look?
- 16:12Give me your left hand that's killed, so are you? While we
- 16:15settle that. Now, you see that line around the ring finger where a
- 16:18ring used to be. That line hasn't been there long. It wouldn't be
- 16:22there at all all. Right? Now, what kind of ring do you
- 16:25return? Not a wedding ring, an engagement ring not finished either, And
- 16:30there's that scratch along the knuckle. You throw that ring off when you're mad,
- 16:33didn't you yeah, yeah, yeah, you did, you did,
- 16:36you did, and it was hot to yank off, so you told him
- 16:38he was so cheap he got your ring that was too small? Right?
- 16:41Oh? You know what I like about you? You didn't call me Sherlock
- 16:47Holmes. You didn't say elementary, my dear Watson. Maybe I am,
- 16:49maybe you are? Oh, hello, Joseph. You know miss Billion.
- 16:53Don't you see miss Billy every day? Jase? That is a commendation to
- 16:59the station. If you don't come in, you're not a friend. That's
- 17:02the motto for artist that's cute? Well is or is not? Somebody going
- 17:07to say so are you? Huh? Oh? Dan, I promise to
- 17:11see that you met Grumble and remember if you just follow me to the table
- 17:14and you too miss oh yeah, thanks Joe for a member and that's well
- 17:18okay, Dan, you want get on those dances? Oh says I won't.
- 17:22There's tens as you won't. It's ten says I will. You can't
- 17:23pin any on them. Don't be a goop. I once got first prize
- 17:26for pinning. You couldn't pin a tail and a donkey and the kid's party.
- 17:29That's where I want first prize. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you
- 17:32gentlemen discussing. Oh were you? Hey, you hold the money? Good
- 17:36here, Dolly, take this money. Oh, thank you very much,
- 17:37good night, and don't get the right commendation to my safe. Hey wait,
- 17:44you're just supposed to hold that money. Yes, my dear, I
- 17:47made a bet with Dan, and when he loses it, you give the
- 17:48money to me. You hope both of them can doctor both of them.
- 17:52What one belongs to Dan and one belongs to you, Dolly? This one
- 17:56is mine? See car market for you? He okay? Does it mean
- 18:02I can keep it? It does not. You'll pay that one and the
- 18:03other one over to me when I win, like I told you. Uh,
- 18:07Miss Gremble, mister grumbley, I present Miss Pillion and mister Guinea.
- 18:11How you do Hello? I know, Dolly, excuse me. I have
- 18:17Laurent Titus and I must say my voice. Yes, save it. Mister
- 18:21g you are the clumpire Ah. Yes, but tonight he's a detective.
- 18:26Yes actually, mister Grumble tonight, I'm a conga dancer. Is this your
- 18:30partner, Dolly? Well, waiter maybe? But could I might I have
- 18:33the pleasure of a dance with Miss Gremble. What he asked me for she's
- 18:37old enough to make up her own mind. Miss Gremble, May I have
- 18:40the pleasure? Hey? What are you getting at? You know anything about
- 18:44congreen? Well? If you think I'm letting you down, just say the
- 18:45word and I'll put on the sock. Finished little save it? What did
- 18:48he say? You were an umpire? H gonna let it go with that?
- 18:55Didn't somebody say a detective? Uh? Huh? Well and I said
- 18:59I was a congo answer and let's go. Hey, Grumber, he can
- 19:07dance. Not bad so far. I thought he'd pop on his face.
- 19:11Maybe he will. Oh, he's wonderful. Who asked you? I'll tell
- 19:15my dance tomorrow. Out there he looks okay, But when he comes closer
- 19:19here go see he's a faker. Is she holding him up? Joe?
- 19:22She's holding him up? Look at that speed, and he's making the band
- 19:26play faster. You can't dance that fast. It'll kill him. It's phenomenal
- 19:30for an umpire. What this phenomenal means? It's something you take when you
- 19:34can't sleep. What's this time now? Joe? A muffet? Oh terrible,
- 19:41got a handle, But she's holding him up. Look at the grin
- 19:45on him. He's giving her some of his fancy talk out there. Hey,
- 19:53what happened to is Grandpa? I thought I was making that turn right?
- 19:56But oh, you're sure I'm not a professional. I told you anytime
- 20:00you didn't like to say so. When I do my back to Niagara Falls
- 20:03used to kill him at the Sportsman's Bank, would say, you might move
- 20:07your feet a bit. Oh, you're just gonna show me up from bump.
- 20:10Mean huh. You say the word and I do. Hey, what's
- 20:14the matter with you? What's the I'm gonna get you over to this chair
- 20:18right away and here sit down saying what's happened to you? Have I been
- 20:23dancing with a partner who's passed out on me? What you been doing?
- 20:27Funny guy? She just went out from having to hold you up the way
- 20:30I figured, and I've been holding her rope. Maybe you want to get
- 20:33a doctor in on this. Oh on you a doctor too, That's one
- 20:36of the three things I'm not. Come on, get a doctor, get
- 20:38into addressing room or what reading? I don't let me. I can't find
- 20:48it. What's happened to her? You haven't any idea? Why are you?
- 20:52I'm taking over mystic chief witness, we've math here. You do a
- 20:57man take home miss Grammar and sort of carry it to the dressing room.
- 21:00But a few fellas outside to see. Nobody leaves the grill. But this
- 21:03little party right here is going into session in the office right now. Wait
- 21:07a minute, Wait a minute, pal music starts again. We'll go along
- 21:10as if nothing happened. What did happen? You don't know what happened to
- 21:14your aunt? But use your place of course, of course, not large,
- 21:26but maybe that's good. Just step in, everybody, wef me,
- 21:29mister Servis, mister kiddy, mister say, I'll have to ask you what
- 21:33your real name is? Clink craddle? No good for a conga dancer?
- 21:38What clink rattle? Bill? All right, William clink Rattle alias Grumber,
- 21:44not alias no professionally has don't be so sensitive. I'm not I'm just horse
- 21:49Now. All right, here we are, if you'll all sit down.
- 21:56Oh you, miss Vigion Dolly Benyon. Now what's your real name? Nobody
- 22:00believed it, but that's what it is. Of course I expect to change
- 22:04it someday. Why do you park your prettyself somewhere? Oh no, no,
- 22:10here's the fact a dancing lady Grandpa, who can be identified as the
- 22:14aunt of Groomba Rumba's had she didn't walk it. Well, it's complicated,
- 22:18you see. She kept a figure and in the light in the grin.
- 22:22Well, what was her name? By the way, Jones? Mary Jo
- 22:26looks Chief. I'll save you some trouble. Miss Jones was killed by a
- 22:27quick chap from a needle. She was jabbed as we made that turn near
- 22:30your table, Grumber. It took effect in a few seconds. She went
- 22:33limping while you were there, Grumba, I don't know anything about that.
- 22:37I'm sure he doesn't. Chief. I was sitting near him all the time,
- 22:40and I would to see it a bet on that he did. That's
- 22:42right on the stakeholder. Now he's ten dollars and ten dollars for mister k
- 22:48You bet on a murder before it happened. Nah, the clwmpire wanted to
- 22:51bet on the burglary. He said the das did, and I said no,
- 22:53we didn't. All right, Clampile, pay up. It's not official
- 22:57yet. Well maybe maybe the two crimes are connected. Got any more to
- 23:02say on that, Wesley, No, must have been committed by somebody who
- 23:06knows way around this hotel. Oh that reminds me. Pardon the interruption,
- 23:08Chief, Have you a key to the valet's office? Wefley, I yes,
- 23:12Chief, Would you have one of your men go and get my empire
- 23:15suit, you know, the one with all the plates in the big pockets.
- 23:18Open the door, Wesley, but Toman, don go to the valet's
- 23:22office and wanted the boys show you where it is. Get out an empire
- 23:26suit with big pockets and bring it back here. Hey, hey, all
- 23:29of you sit down. Who know where the money was and how to get
- 23:33it out? Don't look at me? Yeah? Chief? And who knew
- 23:36how the dance routine worked? Who knew just when the conga turn would take
- 23:38place? But she wasn't dancing with her regular part? Well, it was
- 23:42the standard thing the congres she usually did. Yeah, and who knew that?
- 23:47Who knew how the lights would be when she danced? And here's another
- 23:48question for you? Who had any reason for wanting to kill it? She
- 23:52was a nice old lady and a good dancer. Maybe she knew something that's
- 23:56done with your suit? Kitty opened the door for Wefley. Will you yes?
- 24:00Wait? Get him on? Get him yeah? Left? We skip?
- 24:06Well you know you go after from surface. He can't get out of
- 24:07the place anyhow, And let go of my monkey. So Joe, will
- 24:11you give it to me? Don't hang on the surface, all hanging on
- 24:12the silkit. Why you pig epe, you'll bomb? I'm present, missus
- 24:18ape, missus, Donny do you want to marry me? I want to
- 24:22marry you. Okay, shake, this is so cute. You're cutting yourself
- 24:26now look to cheep. Here's my clown fire suit with a big pockets.
- 24:29Where's a better place for parking? A lot of bills? And for fellow
- 24:32knew his way around the hotel, it wouldn't be so hard to stow away
- 24:34at the ballots until he could get it back. And who looked there for
- 24:37the dough See still in the pockets, all nice and fresh from the bank.
- 24:42He's a ten I put up. I marked that d case. You
- 24:45know which one Joe put up? And look at his tent right in the
- 24:49same series as the other tens in that pocket. Hey wait, you wait,
- 24:53dam how'd you get on to Joe? Well, from the time we
- 24:56was together at Amby's, handy bar was almost always around me, and I
- 25:02said, Dan, this is not the usual behavior for people who don't like
- 25:06umpires. What is more, Dan, I said, this man has heard
- 25:08me say I'm a detective and what he's up to is trying to throw me
- 25:11off something. And he does I hear phony records? Oh, who knows
- 25:15about records? Joe? He was talking about seventy eight rpm whatever. That
- 25:19is just like an expert. So he could do that and those phone calls
- 25:22too, hah. He could do the funny business with a bag, take
- 25:26a call to the manager's office. Was he so anxious to make that call
- 25:29instead of waiting for me to do it? Was my bag? And then
- 25:32then who else knew how much money was stolen? Well we didn't, but
- 25:36Joe named it to the penny. You know that's that's good there, thanks
- 25:41Geeve. Well, seeing what was going on, I dreamed up a little
- 25:42something about the dancers being in on the robbery, and Joe needled me along
- 25:47with a bet so I'd be sure to work on them exclusively. And you
- 25:49might expect that from a guy who gets sore and an umpire for spotting that
- 25:52wrong ball trick I nailed this afternoon. You are through clown fire. You
- 25:56forgot something, didn't you? A little matter of murder. No, well,
- 26:00who wanted to kill that day? Me? No, Joseph, you
- 26:03didn't. It was Webley. Maybe. What do you run away for?
- 26:06Just a nervous type? I know that. I just want to see your
- 26:07tumble. You want the murderer, he's right here. Hey, get away
- 26:11from me? Yeah, sure, got away from him, Joe, Not
- 26:14unless you're figuring out doing away with him, same as you did with his
- 26:17hand. Me. Why would I want to kill her? She didn't knowhing
- 26:19about the money? Oh? Thanks, so you did? Oh all right,
- 26:22you got the money back. She didn't knowhing about it. That's right,
- 26:26she didn't. You had no motive, that's what they call it in
- 26:29the chief for killing her. You didn't have any idea killing her. That
- 26:33was an accident. You wanted to kill the umpire me or not to lie.
- 26:37I didn't want to kill anybody. I didn't kill anybody. I took
- 26:38the money. But you God, hang a murder rap on me. I
- 26:41tell you hang him down the headquarter. You can't give me for that.
- 26:44Attell you you can't give me for thatthing. Hey, say Dan, I
- 26:48don't talk much, but I want to thank you. And Mary was very
- 26:53good to me and I'll miss her a lot. Who says so sure?
- 26:57Miss it to man? I know you are. Oh what a poor fellow's
- 27:03gone and lost his voice, chief, And he was just being grateful for
- 27:06what? Because Dan brought a murder to justice as you were here on my
- 27:10program tomorrow. And then you did, didn't you? What you just imagine?
- 27:17Didn't build up a case? Sounded good to you? But did anybody
- 27:19say Mary Jones was dead? Well, you'll let me go on and helped
- 27:23nail Joe from burglary. Only Mary Jones isn't dead. She simply passed out
- 27:26from exhausting dancing to congo with you, my friend. I'm sorry, Grandma,
- 27:32I had to let you in for some bad minutes. But maybe you'll
- 27:33forgiveness. You can go to your aunt Mary now, oh yeah, good
- 27:38bye. Look Dan, this observation business as well, only when you go
- 27:45into fantasy that's not detection. So long, mister kitty, my h don't
- 27:55let him discourage you. You'll be a great detective and maybe you'll get him
- 27:59murder cerinick. Now that's not my game. Well, you can still be
- 28:02a clown tire. I don't know what does it get you really? After
- 28:04all, I travel for Chinese stores it self change. It's the change,
- 28:11changing, the change, the character. They get enough change to keep up.
- 28:15It's still going to be married to change. Would change, yeah,
- 28:19trengs changing your own change change change train. Yes, we could be married
- 28:26immediately following station identifications. That would be cute. And this now, but
- 28:30the train stranger, I said that would be you, wouldn't. I just
- 28:36thoughted to congratulate you. It's a wonderful miss Joe, missus Joe, Oh,
- 28:41yes, too wonderful. And to think you are a professional detective at
- 28:44all, mister kitty. But in the train business, Oh no, no,
- 28:48not the train business, the chain business. I traveled for China.
- 29:07I'm sure we all understand. Don't wait. And I'm to be matron of
- 29:11honor at their wedding. Oh, I should say all of us are imaginary
- 29:15people, sparing no intentional resemblance to anyone living or dead. But of course
- 29:19that doesn't apply to our producer, mister Bauer, a very live young man,
- 29:23mister Baller. And next week he has a review for you prepared by
- 29:26the press department of Station wor. I think that's cute, are you?
- 29:32Thank you? The imaginary missus Jones was ethel Remi and her association. To
- 29:36night's production were our stars Helen claire and Peter Donald, supported by Jack McGregor,
- 29:40Jerry Macy, Junius Matthews and Sydney Sloan. This is Roger Bauer inviting
- 29:44you to hear the WR Press Department thread Barn on Broadway Review next first evening
- 29:48at nine thirty Eastern War Times. Well, we hope you'll have our fifth
- 29:52WR Theater production. This is the mutual broadcasting, he says, Welcome back.
- 29:57I love this plan. In the very last couple minutes were maybe stretching
- 30:04a joke a little too far, but other than that, this was a
- 30:08very interesting story and it's one of the better comedy mysteries that we've encountered in
- 30:15the Golden Age Radio program because on one hand, there was a bunch of
- 30:18cute comedy stuff, particularly around our hero's main job being working for a chain
- 30:26of chain stores, and I know I don't have that quite right, but
- 30:30we only have a limited amount of time to record the commentary. But also
- 30:33they established the idea that he could legitimately use his reasoning and observational skills as
- 30:42a detective, albeit not perfectly this was just a lot of fun. Of
- 30:48course, they referenced Murder Clinic, which was a program that originated right from
- 30:52the studios of wor And while I wouldn't put him in the same league as
- 30:59the care characters from Murder Clining, it's a shame that there wasn't a radio
- 31:03character. It was a little bit like this. Obviously, some things about
- 31:07the character Billy just combined him to this particular story. We've got a dearth
- 31:14of good comedy mysteries, and of course the other thing that's interesting about him
- 31:18is that he's an amateur slouth. And there aren't a whole lot of episodes
- 31:25of radio programs that survive a featuring of that sort of sleuth who's not paid
- 31:32or has any business solving crimes. It's either a police officer, a detective,
- 31:37reporter, a photographer for a newspaper. Probably the main examples I can
- 31:42think of are Box thirteen, and even then Nan Holiday is an extraporter,
- 31:48though he's getting involved in these mysteries kind of for his own reasons. And
- 31:52mister and missus north Well, however you cut it, I just thoroughly enjoyed
- 31:57it, and I hope you liked it as well, and I hope you
- 32:00have a great week, a fabulous spray and we will continue on on Monday.
- 32:05Be sure and listen for the Saint and Tuesday it's the return of the
- 32:08lineup. In the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives
