- 0:09All right, on a Football Friday, welcome to Miller and Condon,
- 0:12the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Iowa based programming for the
- 0:17next 6 hours. Thanks for starting it off with
- 0:19myself, Ken Miller and my partner Trent Condon.
- 0:22We will talk sports with you, mostly football right up until
- 0:262:00 here today. Then we'll turn things over off
- 0:28the bench. Sean and Lucas believe they're
- 0:31on location here today at Hy Vee, out on Urbandale, Hy Vee
- 0:36for their show. But we will be here and we will
- 0:39talk football. Here's who we'll talk with
- 0:41coming up in about 20 minutes. Eugene repay, he covers Iowa
- 0:45State for the Des Moines Register.
- 0:46We will talk to Eugene, get his thoughts, what he expects to
- 0:49see, maybe some of the games, keys to the game from Eugene
- 0:53when he joins us. Then we'll head off to Las
- 0:55Vegas, catch up with the vice president of operations at Circa
- 0:58Sports, Mike Palm. He's an Iowa native, born,
- 1:01raised in Dubuque. He'll join us the latest on
- 1:04their three contests, what they saw last night from the betting
- 1:07perspective and what perhaps we can see.
- 1:10And of course, we're going to pay a lot of attention to the
- 1:12betting splits on Cyhawk. And we'll get that from Mike
- 1:14Palm coming up here at 12:40. Bama, Bob Trent and I will break
- 1:19down perhaps the worst week of college football in the history
- 1:23of the sport. And I'm not being, I'm not being
- 1:25facetious. There's been bad weeks.
- 1:26Well, this, this is, I mean, I put this up again.
- 1:29Now remove CYHAWK. Yes.
- 1:31Oklahoma, Michigan. OK, one, go ahead, go, go ahead.
- 1:36Michigan State. Boston College.
- 1:38You reach and. Do it that that doesn't do it
- 1:40for you. Look at we.
- 1:41Yeah. It's good to do it because I put
- 1:42it on our list to talk to Bama. That's how bad it is.
- 1:45You can Syracuse. There's a needle mover, you
- 1:48know, Bama sent a texture in the show yesterday and you know just
- 1:50how bad it was. And I guess I didn't realize
- 1:54until I was trying to take a look at some of the marquee
- 1:57games of the week. But here's the here's the good
- 1:59news. When we've had bad ones before,
- 2:01we come back on Monday every single year saying, my God, what
- 2:03a great week. Something always happens.
- 2:06Absolutely something always happens.
- 2:08And hopefully it'll be in the game that kicks them off
- 2:10tomorrow at 11:00. It's a Jack Trice stadium.
- 2:14I don't care either way. Just entertain us for overtimes.
- 2:16That would work again, but we'll see where it goes.
- 2:19Tom Cakehart, he's going to be in his car making his way to
- 2:23central Iowa and he'll join us at 1:30.
- 2:26We will talk Hawks with Tom Cakehart, our final guest of the
- 2:29week. Trent and I will make our picks
- 2:31for our head to head contest and our contest against Sean and
- 2:35Lucas. We to pick five games we can 2
- 2:38college, 2 pro and a best bet. Do you like the Slate bet from a
- 2:43betting perspective this week? I do.
- 2:46Next week in the NFL will be my favorite week to bet.
- 2:48That is overreaction week, where basically everything goes the
- 2:51other way. I have a handful of games, but
- 2:55you know, I'm in the the college contest with the Super book and
- 2:59with a bunch of buddies. How many?
- 3:00People ended up entering that car 'cause I just disappointed
- 3:03in the number I remember. Well, just over 1000, there were
- 3:06people that thought Miami was going to be 8 or 900.
- 3:09So that was kind of the speculation when we were out
- 3:11there is it wasn't going to reach 1000.
- 3:13It went over that. But I think about 1200 was the
- 3:15final number that are entered into it.
- 3:17Now you have to finish top 10 for the full season to be in
- 3:20there and we're not off to a good start, but we got five
- 3:24guys. Everybody threw in 100 bucks and
- 3:28trying to get then those final two games because everybody gets
- 3:31one pick and then those last two then it's.
- 3:33Community choice did you have? Anything a lean and one guy he's
- 3:37dead paid wants Michigan State and two of us their.
- 3:39Number they're. Three 3 1/2 something in that
- 3:42range over BC. There's just getting those final
- 3:462 picks when he do that. And you've been doing this for
- 3:48years with your circa million selections because you play with
- 3:50the group. Does it ever get divisive?
- 3:54No, they just let me pick them. It gets to that, huh?
- 3:57It just lets let Ken do. It and I really don't want to,
- 4:00right? Yes.
- 4:01The pressure, yes, that goes into it, yeah, when you get down
- 4:04to that. In fact, it happened this
- 4:05weekend because there was dispute for Monday night Bears,
- 4:08Vikings and a couple of the guys didn't want to do Monday Night
- 4:12Football because the division. So they put it on me and I came
- 4:15up with and I'm not, I'm not real proud of it.
- 4:17Cincinnati over Cleveland. Oh, Cincinnati early season.
- 4:20I know, and I think you like Cleveland and Cincinnati.
- 4:23Early season's been a dead set bet against since Zach Taylor
- 4:27got there. So we'll see.
- 4:29The Iowa, Iowa State line, it is now 3 1/2 everywhere.
- 4:32This time yesterday it was 3. Maybe.
- 4:34I think maybe DraftKings was 3 1/2 and Circa, but now
- 4:38everybody's 3 1/2 across the board.
- 4:40Totals anywhere from 42 to 43. Oh, there is a 41 out there
- 4:46that's offshore anyways. So let's go back to last night
- 4:51from what we saw. OK.
- 4:54Dallas better than we thought. Philadelphia worse than we
- 4:57thought. Little of both.
- 4:58Well when you start the game you lose 2 guys off your roster.
- 5:01I mean, you know, before the ball snapped.
- 5:03What? What incredible start.
- 5:04I feel awful for the special teams kid.
- 5:06The kid was going to be the full back #43 I don't know who it is,
- 5:10I don't know his name, but the first play of the year, you run
- 5:13down and it was non contact. You could see him grabbing his
- 5:17knee. Yeah, he reached for the guy to,
- 5:18you know, the guy that was blocking him, but he just, that
- 5:23wasn't what caused the injury. It was just a complete fluke.
- 5:26And then Spit Gate looks really bad.
- 5:29And then you look later on in the night and they find the
- 5:31second spinner and maybe it's not quite as bad as we thought,
- 5:35that there was a spit that preceded the spit that got the
- 5:38ejection. And Jalen Carter, Dak Prescott
- 5:40got away with one. It's always the second guy,
- 5:43always the second guy. And they got the second guy.
- 5:46Look, I I was just not surprised by how many Bears fans
- 5:52immediately went to Twitter. I see.
- 5:53I know there's a reason we didn't drive.
- 5:55Jalen Carter's the best at his position.
- 5:57In the league, but he's also a knucklehead.
- 5:59He is, but there's a whole league full of knuckleheads.
- 6:01Sure. I would want this guy on my team
- 6:03every single day that ends in Y. He is a difference maker and he
- 6:08is a knucklehead. And he does have the Georgia
- 6:10baggage. I mean, he killed a guy.
- 6:11Yeah, right. I mean, he killed a guy.
- 6:12He also, and this is what I bring up often with you when you
- 6:16start crying about Josh Allen. It's also about situation.
- 6:20And we're not sure if Carter went to a different situation
- 6:23that didn't have the Fed veteran leadership, also had Georgia
- 6:26players, people that knew him. The wrong branded Graham that
- 6:29was able to take one of those those type of guys.
- 6:32The wrong situation for the wrong type of personality, and
- 6:36that bears organization. It's awful.
- 6:39Was is is until they prove it is, until it changes, is
- 6:47ineptitude for 40 years, Yeah. He's a hell of a player.
- 6:49Yes, but it's not just about talent.
- 6:51It's also about fit. It's also about the right
- 6:54coaching, the right people, the right mentors, all those
- 6:56different things. That's why I go back to Josh
- 6:58Allen. There's no guarantee.
- 6:59Look, he was bad as a rookie and there's no guarantee he turns
- 7:02into the Josh Allen today without what he had, the
- 7:05tutelage, everything that went into it.
- 7:07And it's the same thing here. Jalen Carter, Chicago, hell, he
- 7:10could be out of the league. I mean he, he.
- 7:12Well, he wouldn't be out of the league.
- 7:13I mean, if somebody give a. Chance, that kind of
- 7:15personality, those kind of decisions he's made in the past,
- 7:18there's no guarantees there. He could be.
- 7:20He could be locked up, he'd mention.
- 7:23It the league's full of a bunch of a holes.
- 7:24There are, there are, but all those guys, not all of them make
- 7:28it. That's what I get into when you
- 7:30bring up those kind of. Things Jalen Carter's he's an
- 7:33all pro. He has, yeah.
- 7:34It's it's not a talent. It's never a talent.
- 7:36It is situationally. The Eagles were a great Who did
- 7:39you draft? I remember can I do you want
- 7:42some help? Yeah, yeah.
- 7:44What's that Justin fields here? Oh God, yeah, you tried to sell
- 7:47me on that. One.
- 7:48Well, who would you rather have? That's easy.
- 7:52So I win, let's move on, let's get back to the game itself.
- 7:56Cowboys could have won the game, Trent.
- 7:57Oh absolutely if it would have. Should have won the game. 3
- 7:59drops. 4/4 Yeah, three in the final couple minutes.
- 8:03Miles Sanders coughs it up and where The seven yard line?
- 8:06They're going going in. I think there's two things to
- 8:10take away. The Cowboys are gonna be OK.
- 8:13They're gonna be. OK, playoff.
- 8:14OK. Yeah, OK.
- 8:16I'm. 899 and eight break here or there, one way or the end, but
- 8:19yeah, they're gonna be. Precipice, everything goes their
- 8:21way. Maybe they get a seven seed.
- 8:22Six seed? Yep, I agree.
- 8:23They're gonna be OK. The Eagles last night, that game
- 8:27plan, I mean, you talk about Kirk Ference, vanilla ice cream.
- 8:31That was boring football. And maybe they just believed
- 8:35that they could play that way, but there was not a whole lot
- 8:38into it. It's.
- 8:38A good thing Jill and her showed up.
- 8:40Absolutely. In a divisional game, where was
- 8:42A.J. Brown?
- 8:43Did he show up? Did he?
- 8:45He had to catch late. He did.
- 8:46Yes, the when they threw it on 2nd down to salt the game away
- 8:50and they got to 3rd and 1. He was the guy that caught that
- 8:53ball. That was it.
- 8:55It was a weird game plan. I thought maybe they were just
- 8:58surprised that Dallas was hanging with them.
- 9:00But it was a very boring game plan.
- 9:02There just wasn't a whole lot into it.
- 9:05Was that by design? I don't know.
- 9:06Or do we go back and there's some shuffling of faces?
- 9:10The defense in Pack Field certainly has questions back
- 9:12there. If this Eagles team were
- 9:16talented but remember went wrong a couple years ago.
- 9:19I don't know. It just looked odd to me
- 9:22watching them last night. And I'm anxious to see where
- 9:24they go, both of these teams. Eagles look as, I mean, it's
- 9:28Week 1. But did the Eagles look as
- 9:31daunting as they did throughout the regular season last year?
- 9:34They lost a lot of guys on that defensive line, as I think
- 9:37Collinsworth pointed it out at some point during broadcast last
- 9:40night. Lot of guys gone, couple moved
- 9:42on. Gray moved on to, you know, he's
- 9:44retired. They still got Barkley,
- 9:47obviously, they still got really good receivers.
- 9:49The offensive line is really good kickers.
- 9:52Back to being what he thought he thought he was early in his
- 9:56career. What's the weakness on this
- 9:58team? There isn't anything.
- 10:00I wish I had more Philadelphia NFC tickets.
- 10:02That was my biggest take away. I think they're legit.
- 10:05I do. Button up in the second-half.
- 10:08I don't I I guess we're on other sides.
- 10:10I also do have some Philly stuff in My Portfolio, but I wasn't
- 10:14impressed by Philadelphia. You weren't No, I didn't think
- 10:17Oh yeah, this is the best team in the NFC far and away clear
- 10:20cut. I didn't see that.
- 10:22So if you think that you gotta believe more in this Dallas team
- 10:25then right? I do believe more than the I do
- 10:27like. That was one of my takeaways.
- 10:29CD Lamb is not going to be that. Bad.
- 10:31No, Absolutely. He's going to catch those balls
- 10:33more times than not Javonte Williams looked like the the
- 10:38running back that Denver thought he was going to be when they
- 10:39drafted him. Where was that for crying out
- 10:42loud? God, dude ran hard.
- 10:43We'll see. Fun game, fun way to lift the
- 10:46curtain on the NFL season. I'm guessing it did a massive
- 10:49number with the with those two teams and.
- 10:51The delay might hurt. Yeah, that's true, Trent.
- 10:53That's a, that's a very good point.
- 10:54I think it probably hurt more in the Eastern Time zone because
- 10:58it's getting a little late. But you know, we'll, we'll see
- 11:03where it goes. Yeah, I was here doing work in
- 11:05you. Really.
- 11:05You were. What to what time were you here,
- 11:07130? Good God, yeah, you do a lot of
- 11:09those shifts. I I do, yeah.
- 11:11That's when I get my work done. Everybody's sleeping and I get
- 11:12my stuff done. Is there anybody in the
- 11:14building? Sometimes there's cleaners.
- 11:16Yeah. What?
- 11:16Didn't see anybody last night. Sometimes maybe there'll be
- 11:19somebody at WHL, but rarely. But.
- 11:21Usually you got to, if you bump it, you got to scare that person
- 11:23because they're used to this building being them alone.
- 11:25Oh. Absolutely.
- 11:26So I'm pulling out of the parking lot at 1:26 or something
- 11:29like that, and there's a cop car circle around.
- 11:32All of a sudden their headlights go on.
- 11:33Like those top headlights, the floodlights.
- 11:36Yeah, I'm like for you, hands up.
- 11:37I don't know. It wasn't it.
- 11:39I don't think it was me at least.
- 11:40But yeah, they whipped around in the parking lot across from
- 11:43here, didn't come after me or. Anything where where they they
- 11:46parked for the school. Yeah, just a little bit further
- 11:48down there. Yeah, where the school was.
- 11:49Yeah. Like maybe a little nervous.
- 11:50I'm like, well, I got nothing to be worried about over here, I'm
- 11:52just working, but would have an oddity when you're traveling
- 11:56around early in the morning, as I was last night.
- 11:59I was also getting ready for Cyhawk.
- 12:02And. All week long.
- 12:03Yep. We've been laying out Iowa State
- 12:06advantages. We both like Iowa State.
- 12:10No, I but I was going to win the game.
- 12:11But you think I was going to win.
- 12:12The I do like Iowa State, but I think I was going to win the
- 12:15game. Is it just because of this game
- 12:17the way that it is? Yes.
- 12:19Everybody goes one way, you go the other.
- 12:21Last year, there's so many examples we can play this game.
- 12:25Iowa looked like garbage against.
- 12:27Albany and when teams look like awful before the side hawk game
- 12:31and almost every single time goes away.
- 12:34Is it Gronowski? Is it the run game is it just
- 12:36defensive? What is it about Iowa, though,
- 12:39that really pushes it over the edge for you?
- 12:41What is the? It's the game.
- 12:43It's nothing about Iowa. It's the game, yes.
- 12:46Just how? Iowa State looks like they're
- 12:48going to crush Iowa based on the two weeks I've seen the Clones
- 12:51and the one week I've seen the Hawks.
- 12:53They they played Albany as a what, 30?
- 12:57How much point favorite were they?
- 12:58And they, they look bad. They can run the ball, but you
- 13:02should push that defensive line around.
- 13:05If you're a Hawkeye defensive line, you should offensive line,
- 13:08you should push them around. You should win the trenches.
- 13:12And they did handily. I was going to win the game.
- 13:17I was going to win the game. They can win up front on both
- 13:21sides. Outside of Dom Orange, that
- 13:23defensive line has been disappointing.
- 13:27Well. And they have one sack.
- 13:29Yeah, but that's not what they do.
- 13:31That's right. I know they sit in coverage last
- 13:34year. Here's the thing that I look at,
- 13:36you look at the final numbers for Caleb Johnson, they're
- 13:38outstanding. But you're not going to take
- 13:41away the big runs. But it was a lot of feast or
- 13:44famine, right? It was those huge runs, those
- 13:46304050 yarders and then a loss of 1, 2nd and 9 after he picks
- 13:52up a yard. Have to stay away from those.
- 13:55Get into the six second and six, get into the second and four get
- 13:58into those because Iowa, we just know they can't play behind the
- 14:02sticks and I think that hurt them certainly in the
- 14:04second-half is it wasn't Caleb Johnson because he still made
- 14:07big plays even in the second-half of the game.
- 14:09It was those yardage plays that were going the wrong way.
- 14:12Iowa has to stay away from that and with that offensive line, I
- 14:16think they should be able to. Iowa State started crashing on
- 14:18the edges last year. They're probably going to do
- 14:21that again. I was going to have to bounce it
- 14:22outside. And does that lead to more
- 14:24Xavier Williams or is this a troll Washington game?
- 14:27We know he's of the group. He's definitely the speedster
- 14:30out there out there. If they make the decision to go
- 14:32with him a little bit more and try to get him on the edge.
- 14:35The other thing, Iowa State special teams are improved.
- 14:39I was still has an edge. There they do, and they might
- 14:41have a bigger edge because there's a bunch of rumors out
- 14:42there that Florida's not going to.
- 14:44Our Flora is not going to be able to answer the bell.
- 14:46Went a little gimpy before he got hit out of bounds on that
- 14:48second hamster. Yeah, that changed.
- 14:50And there's no injury report, so we will just be forced to
- 14:53speculate. Townsend, though he's good,
- 14:56return. That would be the guy.
- 14:57Yes. And he's shown that wiggle that
- 14:59we've talked about. I think Iowa has to win special
- 15:02teams, don't have to dump, win special teams.
- 15:05Granowski obviously has to be better.
- 15:06Yep, and dominate both lines. And that's not a stretch at all.
- 15:10No, Iowa State's not the 85 Bears.
- 15:13Nope, that's not what this team is.
- 15:15They're good. They played really well.
- 15:17Is it and I was best interest to come from behind because I don't
- 15:20think you want to leave Rocco Bect anytime on the board with
- 15:23work to do because he usually does it.
- 15:25Would you rather sign up for being up a couple or down a
- 15:28couple? I think up a couple.
- 15:29If you're the Hawks or. Down a couple and have to come
- 15:33back and kick that field goal to win it.
- 15:35You feel good about your Stevens, too.
- 15:36You do absolutely do. Oh my God, this game, this I, I
- 15:41just absolutely love it. I truly do.
- 15:43And we'll see where it goes. I think Iowa State should win
- 15:46the game, but I don't think they will.
- 15:48That's how I see it. We'll take a time out.
- 15:50We'll come back. We will hear from Eugene Repay
- 15:53who covers Iowa State, Look forward to him joining us and he
- 15:56will do so. On the other side, Mike Palm,
- 15:59the from the vice president of operations at Circa.
- 16:02Their contest closes up shop tomorrow.
- 16:04There are over 17,000 entries in Survivor.
- 16:08What are they, 59 in grandissimo, something like
- 16:11that. They hope to get 15 when they
- 16:13first came up with the idea. They're at 59 and I think
- 16:16counting and they might get to 70 because as we talked when it
- 16:20first was announced, when Palm was on with us, we all agreed
- 16:24that if you're going to enter grandissimo, you're not going to
- 16:26do so until last weekend. Absolutely.
- 16:28Keep $100,000 in your own bank account, Right, Eugene?
- 16:32Repay next. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 16:34football Friday. Thanks for being with us on the
- 16:36Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Millory Condon, welcome
- 16:42back. Coming up on 12/25 Iowa Sports
- 16:44Radio Network, wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa,
- 16:47we are grateful that you are. We'll take you until 2 and then
- 16:50off the bench, Sean and Lucas until 5.
- 16:53Let's get Eugene repay covers the Cyclones for
- 16:56desmoinesregister.com. Eugene, Trent and Ken, thank you
- 17:00for coming on. PSY Hawk now 22 1/2 hours away
- 17:04and the ball will be in the air and promises to be a day very
- 17:08similar weather wise to this. How are you, Eugene?
- 17:11I'm great, I'm great. I'm pumped for tomorrow, big new
- 17:13and kick off. We'll be on the national
- 17:15platform as well, so it'll be a big day for for the Seahawks
- 17:18series. No question about it, and it
- 17:20seems like it always is. It's a coin flip game.
- 17:22Regardless of what's happened to these two schools in their games
- 17:25leading up to this one. When it when it comes to the
- 17:29cyclones and just rock go back to what he's been able to do so
- 17:32far this year. He's been near perfect right.
- 17:35He's off to a terrific start and needs to be tomorrow.
- 17:39What's the key? Do you think that the he'll have
- 17:41to throw the ball for Iowa State to run, knowing that seemingly
- 17:46the Hawks will be able to at least limit the ground game for
- 17:49Iowa State? Yeah, He might not necessarily
- 17:52need to replicate that 95% single game completion record,
- 17:56but I think Ronkelbeck will definitely be an X Factor in
- 17:59this game. Just with the way that Iowa's
- 18:01defenses and just the way that they bring it stopping the run
- 18:05and and whatever it may be, Rocco Beck is going to have to
- 18:08be pretty good. He's going to have to be pretty
- 18:10good tomorrow. But I feel like his coach Gene,
- 18:12and what he's shown that he's able to do in the fourth quarter
- 18:15will be crucial, especially in the game that, like you said, no
- 18:18matter what happens or no matter what the records are, the
- 18:21rankings are, it always seems to be a close one.
- 18:23It can always go out of the way. And when you have a quarterback
- 18:26that can perform when the pressure is the greatest, that
- 18:28that should bode well for the Cyclone.
- 18:30You mentioned obviously Rocco and what he does in the passing
- 18:33game, but you don't want to become one-dimensional against
- 18:36the Iowa defense. Iowa State hasn't run the ball
- 18:38great these first two weeks. Carson Hansen and Busama, both
- 18:42those guys averaging under 4 yards per carry.
- 18:44What have you seen out of the ground game and and with Burrs
- 18:47illness and him being out and potentially out again this week?
- 18:50Is it a front or do you see something with the running
- 18:53packs? Why isn't it clicking in the run
- 18:54game? Yeah, I think Taylor Mauser
- 18:57wants to see more physicality, wants to see the offensive line
- 19:00really step up and really pave the way.
- 19:02It felt like that they had moments against Kansas State,
- 19:04particularly in the first and fourth quarters, where they were
- 19:07able to move the ball well. But then when you can't really
- 19:09move the ball against an FCS level defense, who knows what
- 19:12the Hawkeyes are going to bring and what kind of challenges
- 19:15they'll present. So I think where Iowa stayed for
- 19:17goodness, establishing a run earlier, establish a run often,
- 19:20it'll be good for them. But easier said than done,
- 19:24especially with just how physical Iowa is every year,
- 19:27year in and year out. What are you hearing on Aidan
- 19:30Flora? Is the hamstring that he seemed
- 19:33to tweak on his second punt return?
- 19:35Is that an issue going into tomorrow?
- 19:36Have you heard Eugene? According to Matt Campbell, he
- 19:40is OK I. Personally.
- 19:42Need to see exactly. Yeah, I personally need to see
- 19:45it to believe it. That's how I felt, especially
- 19:47once he said that Aiden Flora obviously been having a great
- 19:51couple of games on special teams and his help and you know, 1
- 19:55you, you want to see the the guy succeed.
- 19:57I mean, it's a great story just to walk on thriving in his role
- 20:00and making a name for himself on special teams, really building
- 20:03early season momentum there. But just the, the injury itself,
- 20:07I know Campbell says he's healthy, but one of those
- 20:09things, and I'm sure a lot of Cyclone fans feel the same way.
- 20:13They need to see it, to believe it.
- 20:14We talked a ton this week, Eugene, about the Iowa State
- 20:17tight ends, how good both Bramer and Burkel have looked, and
- 20:20they're not alone in that group. The wide receiver mark, though,
- 20:23it's been a question. Eskelton's been good.
- 20:25And outside of that, that you transfer guys.
- 20:27We did get to see last week, though, a little bit more Xavier
- 20:31Townsend and not just as a receiver using him in the run
- 20:33game, in the return game. They can do a lot of different
- 20:36games, different things with him.
- 20:38Do you anticipate that this is going to be more Xavier Townsend
- 20:40this week? We're going to see more of him
- 20:42and maybe some more ways to get the ball in his hands.
- 20:44And then secondly, what's going on with Jason Chase Soul out of
- 20:48East Carolina? Yeah, With Xavier Townsend, you
- 20:51could really see in the limited touches that he had or when he
- 20:54did get the ball in his hands, you could really see that
- 20:56athleticism. You can really see that
- 20:58shiftiness and what he, what he's able to bring to the table.
- 21:01I think that they're going to start to use Xavier Townsend a
- 21:03little bit more. It seems like he's really
- 21:05starting to find his footing a little bit.
- 21:06And As for Chase OL, definitely not the start that anybody had
- 21:10anticipated. 0 receptions through two games.
- 21:13He was highly touted coming into the transfer portal.
- 21:17Hasn't really done anything yet. He's got a couple of targets but
- 21:20hasn't been able to reel the ball in with Chase OL.
- 21:23One thing that Taylor Mauser has stressed is just being able to
- 21:27be patient with the wide receiver.
- 21:28Especially some of these newer faces.
- 21:30They they alluse to the fact that Jaden Higgins took a few
- 21:33games or took a while before he was the Jaden Higgins that
- 21:36everyone knows right now through two games.
- 21:39Definitely a little bit of a yellow flag, something that to
- 21:42monitor moving forward. Whether or not he's able to get
- 21:45his first catch in this game, we'll see, but definitely a
- 21:49little concerning. But with the way that the Titans
- 21:51have been contributing, it's really relieved some of the
- 21:54pressure off of these wide receivers and just helping them
- 21:58get off to a good start offensively.
- 22:00With the running game for Iowa State, as Trent alluded to, kind
- 22:03of struggling out of the gate with Sama and Hanson, and I know
- 22:06Dylan Lee was, it was in garbage time.
- 22:08They were well in front and they had a bunch of backups in I'm
- 22:12not sure South Dakota did or they were still playing Her
- 22:14first team was whatever Dylan Lee looked really good in the in
- 22:19the playing time that he got. Might he be a bigger factor than
- 22:22we're kind of, you know, in the back of our minds at this point
- 22:26are realizing Mike Dylan Lee Seymour carries this week.
- 22:30And what did Mauser get asked about that at all?
- 22:33Yeah, if he, if he wasn't on everyone's radar, I feel like he
- 22:36really put himself on the map or, or just kind of was like,
- 22:39hey, you know, I'm here too. He carried the ball very well in
- 22:42the fourth quarter. Like we mentioned, the running
- 22:44game didn't really get much production until he came in and
- 22:48really helped clean up some of those numbers and made the the
- 22:50running stats look better than they actually were.
- 22:53Mauser and Campbell have kind of alluded to the fact that, you
- 22:56know they're going to ride the hot hand or whatever it may be,
- 22:58but I do feel like after a game like that, he definitely created
- 23:03some opportunities for themselves going forward.
- 23:05Now, what part of the rotation or will he see a prominent role
- 23:08against Iowa? We'll see.
- 23:10But I feel like he definitely turned some heads and improved
- 23:13some coaches and his teammates around him with what he was able
- 23:16to do last Saturday. Eugene, you're new to the
- 23:19Midwest and this is going to be your second year going through
- 23:22the Rival rivalry, the first time it being in Ames.
- 23:25What's been your take away now going through this the second
- 23:28time and just this rivalry as as an outsider, what you think of
- 23:31the Sidehawk game? I love it.
- 23:34Just from talking to some of the players here this week, and the
- 23:38guy is namely the guys who didn't grow up in Iowa, we all
- 23:40feel the same way. It didn't matter where you grew
- 23:44up, but once you set foot in the state, you realize how important
- 23:48this game is to everybody and everybody within the state
- 23:52borders. And I'm just very excited for
- 23:55it. For me, it'll be my first time
- 23:57seeing it live. I actually came in just after
- 24:00the Skyhawk game last year when I moved here to Iowa.
- 24:02So I missed the the epic finish at Kennick.
- 24:05But just what this rivalry means, you you hear about it,
- 24:08but now to be able to experience it and just see it on a national
- 24:11platform for the third time in six years, it's going to be
- 24:14exciting. And, and I think that I'm I'm
- 24:17ready to experience that first hand tomorrow.
- 24:19Does Jameson Patton have another game changing play in him?
- 24:22Obviously the when the the play made against K State late in
- 24:26that game, the interception early in the game when it was
- 24:30ever. Both teams are going up and down
- 24:32the field. Pat made a huge interception in
- 24:37that game was what, 14-7, soon to be seemingly 14 apiece.
- 24:41And it's the momentum totally shifted after that.
- 24:43He's off to a great start, Eugene.
- 24:46Yeah, it totally felt like against South Dakota, his pick
- 24:48really just took the wind out of the Coyote sails and after that
- 24:52they were never the same. Offensively.
- 24:54He's really coming along together.
- 24:56Well, obviously he's had great explained experience over the
- 24:59last couple of years, but he was one of the safeties that the
- 25:02coaching staff was very high on throughout the offseason and
- 25:05through the preseason. Now here he is balling out with
- 25:08Jeremiah Cooper now at cornerback.
- 25:10His contributions along with these other safeties has been
- 25:13very much welcomed. And it also just kind of shows
- 25:15like when the coaches made that move to shift Cooper over to
- 25:19quarterback, they felt confident in the guys that were going to
- 25:22be able to take over at safety. And here's Jameson Patton
- 25:24proving them right and making plays through these first couple
- 25:27of games. Give us one on each.
- 25:30Iowa State wins this game if. Iowa State loses this game if.
- 25:35I would say Iowa State loses this game if they lose the
- 25:38turnover battle. It feels like when you look back
- 25:41at the last seven or eight years, the, I think in seven of
- 25:45the eight last eight games, the team that wins the turnover
- 25:48battle ends up winning the game ultimately.
- 25:50And you got to take care of the ball against an Iowa defense
- 25:53that you know is going to be tough.
- 25:55It's going to bring it to you at all at all fronts.
- 25:57But then also, they're going to control the ball, they're going
- 25:59to run it down the Cyclone's throat.
- 26:01So I'd imagine so if I was they can win the turnover battle.
- 26:05It'll be in good shape now. I would say we'll win.
- 26:08I would say if Rocco back is able to perform well.
- 26:11And I feel like I'm really heavily believer and that this
- 26:16will be another close game. And when you have a bad guy
- 26:19under center, it'll go a big way.
- 26:22He just seems to perform his best when the team's backs
- 26:24against the wall or when they need a lot out of him.
- 26:27He seems to shine the brightest this and in a game that's
- 26:30projected to be close once again, I think of we'll see
- 26:33another fourth quarter game-winning drive from Rocco
- 26:35Beck. We shall see.
- 26:36Eugene repay covers the cyclones for desmoinesregister.com.
- 26:40Eugene, thanks for jumping on grab you in a couple of weeks.
- 26:43Thank you, Eugene. Thank you guys.
- 26:44Yeah, good to talk to Eugene Repay.
- 26:47Is there a 100 yard rusher in this game tomorrow?
- 26:50Yeah. You think there is?
- 26:51Yeah. And he's a hot guy.
- 26:52Yes, Washington. No, Xavier Williams, you think
- 26:57it is. I really like.
- 26:59Oh, I do too. I do too.
- 27:00He looks different. Doesn't he?
- 27:01Yep, he does. See.
- 27:02They've got something. There and he was the 4th guy
- 27:04that was mentioned in the preseason.
- 27:05He's like going going back. Last year, probably the 5th.
- 27:08Is because McNeil was getting the top.
- 27:10Hype. It was McNeil over him.
- 27:11Yeah, yeah, it. Was the top three, then McNeil,
- 27:15then Williams, You know, not a bad stable to have.
- 27:18Oh man. Well, that's what they call
- 27:19themselves. The stable.
- 27:20The stable, Oh my God, who leads The Who leads the Cyclones in
- 27:27receiving yards tomorrow? Xavier Skilson caught that long
- 27:31win early in the game. Xavier Townsend.
- 27:33You think? I think it's going to be a
- 27:34Townsend. Game.
- 27:35You think it's a breakout game for him?
- 27:37Look, he looked really good last week.
- 27:38He did. I'm with you.
- 27:39And I think they're going to get him even more involved in this.
- 27:41Not a tight end. Not a tight end.
- 27:45Oracle gets loose man. He does you.
- 27:47Don't see where it goes. We're going to go to Las Vegas
- 27:50next and catch up with Mike Palm, the vice president of
- 27:52operations at Circus Sports. Miller and Condon talking
- 27:55football with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 28:13I'm Mary Condon. Welcome back.
- 28:14Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trenton.
- 28:17Ken with you until 2. Off to Las Vegas.
- 28:20We go. Mike Palm's the vice president
- 28:22of operations at Circus Sports. The contests that opened up in
- 28:26May, they're going to close tomorrow at, I believe, 4:00 our
- 28:30time, and Mike Palm joins us. Mike, I remember when you guys
- 28:34first announced grandissimo the Friday that we had you on.
- 28:37And we're both kind of speculating, all three of us,
- 28:40what you might get to. And we all felt that whatever it
- 28:43is, it is, it's going to really peak right around the final
- 28:45weekend of this contest. Well, you're at 59 now, Blue by
- 28:50the 15, the guarantee. Do you do you still think that
- 28:55there's something to our theory that even though you've got 59
- 28:59in, we may there might be a chance this number gets close to
- 29:0270? So 5058. 58 OK.
- 29:07And yeah, we did 4 yesterday. I don't think so, maybe I would
- 29:13say 6263, maybe 65 but I've been wrong all along saying 30.
- 29:19I never thought we'd have 11 on August 1st which really
- 29:23surprised me how much team it picked up early in the sign up
- 29:26period, but definitely will go by 60 which which is great in my
- 29:32mind. What I've been thinking about
- 29:34the last two weeks is what do we do Year 2?
- 29:36Yeah, really. And what have, what have you
- 29:38been thinking, 1/4 of a million? I think that's aggressive, but I
- 29:43mean, if we did 6060 this year and had 6 million or 6.5
- 29:48million, I think Derek would probably be pretty, pretty
- 29:51comfortable guaranteeing 10 million next year.
- 29:54I think we'd see that growth, you know, usually see a pretty
- 29:56big spike between year one and two of an event.
- 30:00So if Philadelphia would have lost last night, not knowing how
- 30:04many entries in Grand Decimo were there, do you think that
- 30:07would have changed the equation were people on them?
- 30:10I mean, if you had to take a guess of what that about would
- 30:12have done and how it would have changed the $100,000 contest?
- 30:18You mean for reentry? Yes.
- 30:21I cannot reveal obviously how many were taken in Standard
- 30:24Survivor and how many were taken in Grandissimo.
- 30:30I conjectured that there would be a higher percentage in
- 30:33Grandissimo on Philadelphia, not save, not worrying about
- 30:37Thanksgiving, then there would be in the regular Survivor,
- 30:40which I think it will prove out that I was right with the higher
- 30:42percentage. I don't buy all these theories
- 30:45that if Philadelphia had lost, we'd suddenly see this big spike
- 30:47and everybody would rebuy. Grandissimo maybe more so.
- 30:51But you just can't get that more, many more entries into
- 30:54Survivor because the proxy appointments are all booked.
- 30:57And remember tomorrow's unlimited window, it cuts off
- 31:00it, too. A lot of the proxies cut it off
- 31:02much earlier than that because they have to start putting the
- 31:04picks in. Oh, sure.
- 31:05Yeah, That's an excellent point. Mike Pom, VP of Operations joins
- 31:10us. Well, Mike, we're doing
- 31:12completely different this year. Usually, I mean, last year we
- 31:15were on like everybody else was on Cincinnati.
- 31:17We have two teams that that normally I wouldn't have been
- 31:21on. We're taking Pittsburgh over The
- 31:24Jets and Jacksonville. How many Jacksonville over
- 31:28Carolinas do you think? Do you think that'll be maybe
- 31:31the 5th or 6th most popular? We're going against the grain
- 31:34this year. I think Denver will be the most
- 31:38popular. Yep, by far.
- 31:41By far. And then I'm not sure I, I think
- 31:50that it will end up that Philadelphia was the third or
- 31:53fourth most popular. I think Arizona is going to be
- 31:55the second a road, a road team. I'm having a hard time getting
- 32:02my arms around the Commanders because I hear a lot of people
- 32:06talking about taking the Giants and the points.
- 32:09Perhaps the Commanders comes in fourth behind Philadelphia.
- 32:12I think Jacksonville could be could be right in that mix of
- 32:15345 though. There's arguments either way
- 32:19though because you're going to get Tennessee at home as I know
- 32:22you don't like to play divisional games.
- 32:23I think there's other spots to use Jacksonville.
- 32:26If I had 10 entries, I think I have to probably put like 4 on
- 32:29Denver, though maybe a couple on Arizona.
- 32:33I personally would take the Colts with a couple.
- 32:36I like the Colts a lot this weekend.
- 32:37I think the Dolphins are a mess and I think the market
- 32:41downgrades the Colts because of Daniel Jones, and I don't think
- 32:44it should. That's absolutely the right
- 32:46choice to be the quarterback. And there's no way he would have
- 32:48left Minnesota unless they promised him the starting job.
- 32:50Let's just be honest about that. And you could have got two days
- 32:53before it was announced he's the starter, 2 to 1 offshore, that
- 32:56he would be the starter. It just didn't make any sense to
- 32:58me. Mike, we talked a week ago about
- 33:00the overreaction I felt like in the market to the Micah Parsons
- 33:04trade on the Green Bay side, how they became the favorite in the
- 33:07division, one of the favorites in the NFC.
- 33:09You look at the point spread in this game also, that thing is
- 33:12flipped over. A Packer is the favorite in the
- 33:14game. What are you seeing in the
- 33:16splits? And because this line has been
- 33:18out there for a while week when lines have been out there for a
- 33:20while, has that changed the equation at all?
- 33:23What normally this would look at with the Packers Lions game this
- 33:26week. I think if if this was week 6
- 33:32and the trade had been made at the beginning of the week or
- 33:34something like that, the line would have been impacted more.
- 33:37As you say, there was there was more in the pool because it's
- 33:40been open for months. I still think everything's an
- 33:43overreaction on both sides. Dallas going from 6 1/2 to 8
- 33:481/2, a 2 point move there. I mean, I think this number, you
- 33:53know, we got to 2 1/2 Packers, it's back down to two.
- 33:56I I'm not sure he plays and I'm not sure if he plays.
- 34:00He doesn't get hurt. It just seems to me he's right
- 34:03for an injury here. And he's.
- 34:05Not been conditioned, conditioned at all.
- 34:08And so I don't think he makes that big of an impact in this
- 34:10game. So I think the overreaction in
- 34:12this game is even more pointed than it is in the market for the
- 34:16NFC North or the NFC. That's fascinating.
- 34:18Your highest. Never thought of that.
- 34:19That's an excellent point the lack of lack of August quite
- 34:23frankly for him the two prime time we'll get to side hawk
- 34:26right after this Baltimore Buffalo is absolutely an
- 34:29appointment TV and from where we sit and I think that the country
- 34:33will feel the same way yes it's Monday night it's the only game
- 34:35so you're going to watch, but Chicago and Minnesota has a lot
- 34:38of cachet as well Sunday and Monday night you guys both got
- 34:42to love those matchups I. Think that Monday night game is
- 34:46more important for people that that win totals on either team,
- 34:51for people that have hopes of the playoffs.
- 34:53Look, Baltimore and Buffalo are both going to be in the playoffs
- 34:56in the the Bears and the Vikings probably both aren't going to be
- 35:01in the playoffs. I think you have two fan bases
- 35:03that are very high and have high expectations with these teams.
- 35:07Minnesota won 14 games a year ago and the Bears, of course,
- 35:10the savior Ben Johnson has arrived in town and he's going
- 35:13to fix all that, all that ails that that franchise.
- 35:17I will tell you this, I did play a first half under.
- 35:19I think the Minnesota defense is really, really good.
- 35:22I think it will take Caleb time playing within a system for the
- 35:25first time in his life to get used to Ben Johnson and what he
- 35:28expects of him. My source who is very close with
- 35:32KOC, who hasn't been wrong about anything, including a month ago
- 35:37when he said KOC says we can't go into the season with Sam.
- 35:39How was our backup? I mean, everything he says comes
- 35:42to fruition, said Koc is very concerned about his passing game
- 35:47with the Addison suspension for three games.
- 35:49And Jefferson is not 100%. He's going to have to run the
- 35:52ball. And although he does not like to
- 35:53involve this quarterback in the running game, he's going to have
- 35:56to have planned runs for McCarthy in this game.
- 35:58I bet McCarthy over 11 1/2 -, 110.
- 36:01I bet him over 15 1/2 + 120. I bet him over 19 1/2 + 170.
- 36:06And I even bet him over 29 1/2 at 7 to 1.
- 36:10I believe what he said. Now, does that mean McCarthy is
- 36:13going to, you know, run three times and gain that?
- 36:16The bears won't expect that? I would think so.
- 36:19I laddered it. Could be wrong, but I think
- 36:22that's good information. I will put that in the back
- 36:25pocket and open up my app and start firing away at that one
- 36:28like that. All right, Mike, let's go to our
- 36:31state Super Bowl, Iowa, Iowa State, it's in Ames once again.
- 36:35Number currently 3 1/2. A little bit of juice right now
- 36:38on the Iowa -115 minus one O 5 on Iowa State with a three and
- 36:42the hook. A lot of public funny this week
- 36:44on the Cyclones. Yeah, I think, I think this is
- 36:48another ladder situation. I think, boy, maybe I'm
- 36:55overreacting to Week 1, but I think that victory by Iowa State
- 36:59means something. That's South Dakota is a well
- 37:01coached, good team. And I know playing the names in
- 37:04August is different than playing in South Dakota or playing in
- 37:08Montana in late December when they have their playoffs.
- 37:11But I was impressed with the Cyclones, I was impressed that
- 37:15they could go, and I thought for the most part, make the Kansas
- 37:19State offense look pretty pedestrian in the rain and
- 37:21Ireland. And here we go once again.
- 37:24Iowa can only complete 8 forward passes against Albany.
- 37:27I mean, this is pathetic. I don't think this game is
- 37:31close. So far, I've laid 3 1/2 and I've
- 37:34laid 6 1/2. I might lay 9 1/2 on an
- 37:37alternate as well. I think this crowd is going to.
- 37:39I think this crowd is going to be very pro pro Cyclone and I
- 37:43think I was going to be in trouble in this spot and this
- 37:45game could get ugly. Wow, that's interesting because
- 37:50I I think I was saying is absolutely the right side, but I
- 37:52think I was going to win the game because it's the side hawk
- 37:55game and you just never know what about the rest.
- 37:58You know I'm, you know, you know I'm no Matt Campbell guy.
- 38:01Yeah, it's true. I'm not a big believer in Matt
- 38:04Campbell and I really don't like him in games where there's
- 38:06closely lined, whether that the point spreads around a field
- 38:09goal or less. But I just think there's a big
- 38:11talent disparity. We'll see.
- 38:14I don't disagree with your theory.
- 38:16I really don't. Let's talk about the rest of the
- 38:18day because it's not the shiniest day by far.
- 38:21But Michigan, Oklahoma might save the weekend.
- 38:24As far as the college weekend, Mike?
- 38:29There's no headliners. I don't know.
- 38:33I don't know enough about either team.
- 38:35When I see a 5, I want to take it.
- 38:36But the rookie quarterback on the road in a tough spot.
- 38:40Michigan doesn't usually travel and play on the road in the
- 38:43South. I have to stay away there.
- 38:46I think the other day, another game at 9:00 AM or 11:00 AM your
- 38:50time. It's a very tricky game for
- 38:52Illinois. Going to North Carolina and
- 38:53playing Duke. I think this will tell us a lot
- 38:56about Illinois and I know a lot of pro betters are taking the
- 38:58three with Duke here. I'm laying off because my
- 39:01opinion of Illinois, I think, I think their value is
- 39:04exaggerated. They had a lot of close wins
- 39:06last year. They had a lot of turnover luck
- 39:08in fourth quarters. Maybe they are as good as their
- 39:10ranking, but we'll see because this is not an easy spot in an
- 39:13early time game for a Big 10 team going to play on the East
- 39:16Coast against the Duke team. That because you think they're a
- 39:19basketball school. Their football team has been
- 39:21pretty good, at least decent and competitive in the ACC.
- 39:26If Illinois goes down there and wins convincingly, I might have
- 39:29I have to make a big change in my power rating on Illinois.
- 39:32Yeah, like Mensa over there. I'll last 30 seconds with you,
- 39:35Mike. UCLA goes to UNLV.
- 39:37Dreadful performance out of UCLAI know normally you guys
- 39:40would be excited about a power for conference school.
- 39:42Come to town. How many fans?
- 39:43I mean, they they can't get 15,000 Bruin fans in the Rose
- 39:46Bowl. How many going to come to Vegas?
- 39:51Surprisingly, UCLA travels decently when they play
- 39:54basketball in Las Vegas, so maybe there'll be a few fans.
- 40:00I don't know what to make of a win over Stan Houston.
- 40:02UNLV was terrible against Idaho. I'm staying away from the game.
- 40:08I tell you, the team that really caught my eye outside of Florida
- 40:10State, who looked like they should have been the two
- 40:12touchdown favorite against Alabama.
- 40:14I thought Utah looked really good.
- 40:16I thought, this, this looks like the Kyle Woodingham teams we've
- 40:19been used to for the last 20 years.
- 40:21And with all this Cam rising Willie play, won't he play
- 40:23Willie, save Willie go out of the way.
- 40:26I I did make a bet on Utah to win the Big 12 after watching
- 40:29them dismantle UCLA. Congrats to you and your team on
- 40:32all three of the contests Trent and I had.
- 40:34We set the over under 5850 for millions.
- 40:38We did that a couple of days ago.
- 40:39I think it's going to go over that.
- 40:42I'll go, I'll go under. I'll go 5750, and my number
- 40:45right now on Survivor is 19. One, I said 18-8 the day we
- 40:50announced the contest. I think I'm going to be pretty
- 40:52close. I'll go with my revised number
- 40:54of 19. One, have a great weekend, my
- 40:56palm talk to you next week. Thank you.
- 40:58Enjoy Cyhawk guys. Thank you, buddy.
- 41:00Friday. Yep.
- 41:01Hour 2 coming up next, Miller in Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:05Network.
