- 0:00Hey there, everybody, it's Jeff. I wanted to let you know that
- 0:02we recorded this podcast episode on two separate days this week. Our interview was
- 0:06recorded on Tuesday, June fourth, twenty twenty four. The regular part of
- 0:10our show with Eric and I was recorded on Wednesday, June fifth, twenty
- 0:14twenty four. So by the time you hear this, some things may have
- 0:16changed here there, but we hope you enjoy the show. All right,
- 0:44everybody, you're listening to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running
- 0:48weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, eleven years strong. We got
- 0:52a great show coming your way. I've been listing off all the topics we're
- 0:57gonna be getting into. I just don't feel like doing it right now.
- 1:00Oh, Jeff Warren, And I'm here with my buddy Eric Leonard, my
- 1:03buddy Eric Leonard, who is now going to be employed. Congratulations buddy,
- 1:10Thanks Bud. Yeah, today late this afternoon that I'm going to be employed
- 1:14in a few weeks. And man, I'm tired of feeling useless. So
- 1:19what do you mean you got this podcast once every two weeks, right,
- 1:26Honestly, one of those things I look forward to the podcast running au basketball
- 1:30practice, and then you look at rest your calendar you're like, oh,
- 1:34man, I am this is pathetic. I have nothing going on. Dennis's
- 1:38appointments. Yeah, I told Jeff before the show. I discovered that weird,
- 1:46the weird feeling of having appointments during the day at like nine o'clock in
- 1:49the morning, a DNIS appointment, and then you go to it, you're
- 1:52done it, nine forty five and you'll leave and you're like, that's it.
- 1:56That's all I have today. I'm seventy five result of my day's time.
- 2:00That's all I had. You know, maybe you can go to you
- 2:04know, the local donut shop, you know, you pick up a donut
- 2:07or something and say, oh, you know, I'm gonna have a treat
- 2:08today. Go down into VFW, talk the other WW two vets, you
- 2:14know, talking war stories. I guess yeah, I remember back in the
- 2:17day when it happened. Was that World War two? Or like the Old
- 2:23West? I'm not sure that was the Old West? What I was just
- 2:24doing right there, Jesus, we do have a great show, though.
- 2:30We are going to be getting into some interesting topics here. First and foremost,
- 2:35there is there's there's fatigue, there's entertainment fatigue that is hit at least
- 2:40here in the United States and perhaps throughout the world as well. We're gonna
- 2:45talk about that entertainment fatigue and how it may translate over into the sports world.
- 2:49We got a new top three list coming your way. It's our top
- 2:53three. I wouldn't be surprised if in the world of Philly sports blank happened
- 2:58here in twenty twenty. For from there, we're gonna get into some Caitlin
- 3:01Clark talk because boy storylines is past week, Yes they are plentiful. And
- 3:08then we've got some Phillies talk to specifically how this organization has really been gauging
- 3:15the international baseball market. There was an article recently and that Balls out of
- 3:19Here dot com site that we'd like to go to every now and again.
- 3:23I'm gonna get into that topic. And then what we're throwing down on the
- 3:24table this week, We've got lou Debiassi from the Lockdown Eagles podcast is gonna
- 3:30join us to talk about some of these Eagles offseason storylines that we've been following
- 3:34and just where this team is heading into training camp next month. So Eric,
- 3:39let's get started on an article that I read In one of my daily
- 3:45emails that I get every morning, it's called Morning Brew, and I'm reading
- 3:50this article about why musicians are canceling their summer shows more and more, and
- 3:55specifically, the article talked about Jennifer Lopez as Bad Bunny the Black Keys,
- 4:01among some major musical artists who have canceled some summer concert dates or an entire
- 4:08tour Like j Lo. Did she shut down her This is Me Live tour
- 4:14of North America that was slated for this summer. Apparently she'd been struggling to
- 4:18sell some tickets as far back as March. But I wonder how from an
- 4:23entertainment perspective, this may trickle down, perhaps to the sports world. We're
- 4:27not seeing it with the Philadelphia Phillies, because the Philadelphia Phillies are selling out
- 4:30every freaking game basically at this point, and for good reason. They're the
- 4:33best team in baseball. But I think it's interesting how as we have come
- 4:41out of the pandemic of twenty twenty twenty twenty one, and how we were
- 4:46clamoring. I remember the first show you and I went to Lamba Gods show
- 4:50down in Camden. It was the first show that we had seen together coming
- 4:55out of the pandemic, and how wonderful it was folks clamoring for entertainment because
- 5:00of being locked in their houses for such a long period of time. And
- 5:02I think we may be getting to the point where there was so much in
- 5:06twenty twenty one, twenty twenty two, twenty twenty three, that things are
- 5:11slowing down a little bit. Ticket prices are extremely high for concerts in general,
- 5:16and for even sporting events as well. I mean, gosh, I
- 5:20remember when you took your son to see the seventy six ers this past year.
- 5:25It was a ton of money from what you told me, just just
- 5:29for both of you. So I think it's an interesting topic that we're seeing
- 5:32it. We're seeing the entertainment world I think perhaps maybe gonna be going through
- 5:35some changes here and how that relates to the sports world too. So I
- 5:40don't know if you had any thoughts on it, buddy, A bunch of
- 5:45thoughts, because I'm you and I are both concert people show people. Yeah,
- 5:48And just my initial thought was you look at the amount the cost of
- 5:56the tickets for the shows, especially the artists that were had to cancel their
- 6:00tours for the most part, just astronomical, like just how much you had
- 6:04to pay. But that's that's not exclusive to them though. There's a lot
- 6:10of really expensive artists out there selling out arenas everywhere, Taylor Swift being an
- 6:14obvious one. I just think of myself personally, and man, give me
- 6:19a Phillies game for twenty four dollars a ticket, Give me a show at
- 6:26Philamocha. We saw Soul Blind a year and a half ago. That was
- 6:29twelve bucks apiece. We just saw Pig Destroyer in Harrisburg for twenty apiece and
- 6:34I had a great night. Idn't have to spend one hundred and fifty bucks
- 6:38on a ticket. But that's just me right as a kind of music.
- 6:41I like the kind of scene. But what struck me about the the article
- 6:46was, you know, Olivia Rodrigo, Morgan Wallin is the guy's name,
- 6:50rights country bumpkin guy. Whatever they're doing all right, they're doing great,
- 6:55you know, because they're the hot young artists right now in their perspective genres.
- 7:00But what's what jumped out of me was like hooting the Blowfish Dave Matthews
- 7:03band. I'm sure you could throw Bruce Springsteing in there. If Paul McCartney
- 7:10decided to tour again or the Rolling Stones bon jo I watched the bon Jovie
- 7:14documentary on Hulu, you know, and they were coming back, you know
- 7:16this past year, just selling out places constantly. Yeah, like they those
- 7:23bands don't have to worry about canceling shows or any tours because they just they
- 7:27have a firm set, like like fan base in place. Hooting the Blowfishes
- 7:31wasn't the biggest band of all time, but they they kind of they kind
- 7:35of walked between the line of like nostalgia and having one of the biggest records
- 7:41of the nineties. Right. Yeah, they could probably tour for the next
- 7:43thirty years until they die and they can make plenty of money. And Rodrigo
- 7:47and Wallen are like the young up and comers, and they could sell it
- 7:50kind of along the lines close to like Taylor Swift, but the the artist
- 7:55I had to cancel, like I'll throw it to you. Like. My
- 7:58one thought was do they have an actual fan base or are they just famous?
- 8:05And now the Blackkis don't quite apply. I'll admit fully, I was
- 8:09a huge Black Keys fan. First three records back in the day. I
- 8:13went and saw them back in my back in two thousand and five. Okay,
- 8:16that's how far back I am and how old I am. Saw of
- 8:20the TLA many times and it was like, what a thousand people maybe,
- 8:24And they were one of those rock bands that kind of broke out. But
- 8:28if you don't reach the if you don't reach the heights of like the Foo
- 8:33Fighters, right, it's the only probably the one rock band I could think
- 8:35of that could sell out. I mean a Red Hot Chili Peppers, right.
- 8:39The Black Keys will never reach that level, not even close. And
- 8:43they were trying to unleash a Food Fighters type tour when they don't have that
- 8:48kind of fan base. They were not at that level ever, And I
- 8:52think a bad Bunny. I think at Jennifer Lopez. Do they have die
- 8:56hard fans or they just famous people. This is really interesting because a word
- 9:03came to mind, and I don't mean this word in any disparaging way,
- 9:07folks, when I say it about whether we're talking about Jennifer Lopez, bad
- 9:09Bunny, even the Black Keys, relevance like relevance within your genre of music,
- 9:18relevance with the fan base that you're talking about, the relevance of staying
- 9:24true to that fan base where you keep them, and you continue to keep
- 9:28them year after year, album after album, hit after hit. That relevance.
- 9:35I don't know if Jennifer Lopez actually has that, because, like you
- 9:37said, she is, I mean, she's extremely famous. You know,
- 9:41she's she's had a husband who she's it's they're a very famous couple. But
- 9:46in terms of her music and it's relevance, like maybe it was relevant for
- 9:50somebody. I remember one of my old coworkers at one of my old jobs
- 9:54absolutely loved her because she was she was from the Bronx. There was a
- 9:58relatable thing. But I actually was hanging out with this old coworker recently at
- 10:03an event and we were talking about music actually, and not once did she
- 10:07ever mention j Lo. Not once did she ever mention the fact that she
- 10:11was going to be going on tour this summer and maybe she would like to
- 10:13go see her. And it's really interesting you bring this up, Eric,
- 10:18because the relevancy I think is not very prevalent when it comes to Jennifer Lopez,
- 10:24Bad Bunny and the Black Keys here, So it's really interesting. They
- 10:31have some fans, but not a fan base that is going to be able
- 10:33to perpetuate a monumental music career. Yeah, I'll go step further. You
- 10:41know, whether you like the Food Fighters or not readout Chili Peppers, they'll
- 10:45be remembered. Yeah, like twenty thirty years from now, they will be
- 10:48absolutely be remembered. Dave Matthew's band will be remembered. Even Whoding and Blowfish
- 10:50will be remembered. They're famous in their own right, in their own musical
- 10:56genre. Jlo's music, Bad Bunny, even the Black Keys, they'll be
- 11:01forgotten like that. It's it's I think it's forgettable music. That's just my
- 11:07taste. Art is art. You like what you like, yep. But
- 11:11I think when you add the the element of fame and it kind of overtakes
- 11:16what they do on stage musically, and then you add on top of that,
- 11:22you're going to charge me two hundred fifty dollars a ticket. I wanted
- 11:24to get to that, yeah, exactly to come watch a famous person do
- 11:28music. Yes, Like I'm not I'm not going for their music, like
- 11:31I'm going for the scene. I'm going for what people are wearing. What
- 11:35it turns into an influencer. Everyone's taking selfies right that. That happens to
- 11:41Taylor Swift shows. I'm sure happens to Rodrigo and Wallan shows, but there's
- 11:45just a's just a holinist to it, because they are so famous, and
- 11:48I think that the music, the music's almost secondary to their to their their
- 11:54their stance, or their their their where they are in the the famous world.
- 11:58Hell yeah, no, it's great. It's a great point and that
- 12:03I wanted to get to that next point of might this trickle down to this
- 12:07this this idea? May it trickle down to the sports world too. We're
- 12:11talking about how people don't want to pay perhaps five hundred dollars to see j
- 12:15Low or maybe one hundred and seventy five dollars to see the Black Keys.
- 12:18I don't know what the prices were for the tickets. Perhaps they don't want
- 12:22to see them for that cost. And I wonder if with certain sports teams,
- 12:28especially here in Philadelphia as well, if we could potentially see that in
- 12:31the future. I'm talking about the Philadelphia Flyers seventy six ers, where this
- 12:35team goes during the offseason. I do think, you know, tickets are
- 12:37still going to sell at the Wells Fargo Center for the Sixers, but you
- 12:41see with other teams throughout the sports world where you know, for instance,
- 12:48I mean Pittsburgh Pirates games. I mean, I remember when those tickets were
- 12:50really, really low, but you're coming out of the pandemic, stuff got
- 12:54a little higher. People needed to make money because they had lost money.
- 12:58A lot of sports organizations knew that they needed to raise ticket prices, and
- 13:05we saw that a decent amount. And I wonder if the sports world is
- 13:07going to kind of suffer from this as well, because certain teams organizations just
- 13:13aren't as relevant in the sports world as they're coming out of this pandemic still,
- 13:18And did these venues that are putting these shows on get a little greedy,
- 13:22Yeah, and try to find famous people to try to fill the seats
- 13:26at their place place of business. And I think they is a miscalculation.
- 13:33I can speak highly to The Black Kies are an easy one. Like I
- 13:37don't know who their manager is, I don't know what their management system is.
- 13:43Man, did they they miscalculated badly? Like that band hasn't had a
- 13:48record out in years, and they thought they're going to go fill arenas after
- 13:52like five years off. Yeah, and you were never that gigantic. You
- 13:56had some hit songs, man, But like, I don't know what the
- 14:00hell they were trying to do? What a horror Like, why not take
- 14:03like the route of like say, drive by truckers, go do some two
- 14:07thousand seat places, three thousand seat whatever it is, and then maybe do
- 14:11like the based on that, like rebuild your career kind of post pandemic.
- 14:16Not that they were like in the in the gutter, but it just didn't
- 14:20make sense to me. And to me, it's like there was too much
- 14:22greed on the venue side, too much greed on the band management side,
- 14:28and it turned into a complete disaster. They look like fools now. Yeah,
- 14:33But I don't think it's gonna I don't think it's going to seep into
- 14:37the sports world too much, just because I think the regular fans have been
- 14:41pretty much priced out as it is. Like I told you about me and
- 14:43Vinnie going to see the Sixers, and it was like, man, we
- 14:46dropped like a thousand dollars just the two of us between like transportation, food,
- 14:52hotel, and having really good seats. But I can't do that every
- 14:56other night through that that's not and and and it's this is an off topic,
- 15:03but it's absolutely affected sports in general, Like the home court advantage in
- 15:07basketball, the home field advantage of baseball. You see it like in the
- 15:11playoffs and stuff, but in regular season games, fans like me are kind
- 15:15of priced out. You got dudes in suits or dudes in like shirt and
- 15:18ties that bought the jersey at the arena put it over the shirt and tie,
- 15:22and you're like, what a dork you're not? You have a nice
- 15:28golf outing and you went to a game and like half the players like unfortunately
- 15:33that that that that's already like on course, like the they've already priced out
- 15:37the normal fan. I don't. I can't imagine it gets much worse,
- 15:41But oh I can. I think, yeah, true, I know,
- 15:46I know, but my god, And we'll see what happens when the Clippers
- 15:48open their new arena. What that's gonna look like when you really think it's
- 15:52gonna be like hardcore l A sports fans at those games, right, my
- 15:56god, like the dude from Microsoft owns the team is going to like see
- 16:00Bomber is going to price everybody out that can't pay a thousand dollars a night
- 16:03for a ticket. But it's I had seen that those those artists have already
- 16:08started to cancel they're not just show like little shows here and there, but
- 16:14entire tours. And then for Jayla to blame it on like you know,
- 16:18our potential marriage stuff, and it's like, no, the family just to
- 16:21see you exact people don't want to conect to see you. It's an interesting
- 16:26topic for sure. We'd love to hear from you, Philadelphia Sports Table at
- 16:29gmail dot com. Let us know what you're thinking about this, and we'd
- 16:32love to read your email here in the show and respond to it. Let's
- 16:34move along here with the show and get into our new top three list.
- 16:38It's our top three. I wouldn't be surprised if in the world of Philly
- 16:42sports blank happened here in two thousand and twenty four. Eric, what's your
- 16:49number three here that you wouldn't be surprised if it happened here in the world
- 16:53of Philly sports. Okay, I'm gonna start positive. I mean, knock
- 16:57on wood right now. You know they'rey good, playing, freaking awesome.
- 17:02Would not be surprised the Phillies won the World Series, all right. They
- 17:06They are an absolute juggernaut right now. And it's not it's not the stars
- 17:10like I'm not talking about Bryce Harper is who he is, and Nick Castellano's
- 17:15had a huge hit last night, the one that they won the game two
- 17:18to one against the Brewers. Not talking about that on top of the guy
- 17:22like I'm talking about Sosa stepping in, you know and bat in three oh
- 17:26eight in Trey Turner's absence, talking about Sanchez stepping up and just being an
- 17:33a in asen spots. You know, I'm not talking Suarez and Wheeler and
- 17:37Nola. I'm talking like the guys stepping up. It's that kind of stuff.
- 17:40It's like, Wow, this team is for real, you know,
- 17:42and they deserve the best record in baseball. Alec Baum was awesome last night.
- 17:48He's been awesome all season. It's just it's a little things about this
- 17:49team that make me feel like this is not it. This is not an
- 17:55early season Fluke. I'm sure they're gonna like they're gonna They're gonna trail off
- 17:59a little bit here. There's no way to be that hot and not gonna
- 18:00win hundred twenty games whin the World Series. But they have stepped up.
- 18:04Rob Thompson has them, has all the non key players playing really well.
- 18:11And that's the kind of thing It jumps out to me about a team like
- 18:14this and the bullpen of solid. They still have moves to make. I
- 18:17would not be surprised they won the World Series and had like the best record
- 18:19in baseball. It just feels like that kind of season right now. It
- 18:22really feels like that. That's the vibes right now at this point. I
- 18:25mean, if you had to say who the World Series was going to be
- 18:27right here at starting June, it'd be the Phillies and it'd be the Yankees.
- 18:32Man, I mean, what a World Series that would be at this
- 18:34point. And it is hard to argue that at this particular point in time
- 18:40that the Phillies just wouldn't take it to the Yankees, given that everything is
- 18:44running on all cylinders. I'm going to get to that in my list in
- 18:48a little bit here. So for me, my number three and Buddy,
- 18:53I know you probably aren't going to be able to talk too too much about
- 18:56this, but Flyers, maybe it is. Yes, Yes, I wouldn't
- 19:00be surprised. Well, here's the thing I said, if this happened in
- 19:03twenty twenty four, technically be twenty twenty five, But I wouldn't be surprised
- 19:07if in the world of Philly Sports. The Philadelphia Flyers get to the playoffs
- 19:12next season at the start of twenty twenty four twenty twenty five season, it
- 19:18should say, ending the two thousand and the end of that season. In
- 19:22twenty twenty five, they get to the playoffs and make a bit of a
- 19:25run. I would not be surprised by that at all, given the fact
- 19:29that, yes, the team is still in a rebuild. They were potentially
- 19:32going to get to the playoffs this past season until they had a major slide.
- 19:36There's a lot of energy on this Flyers team, and the pieces are
- 19:40being put into place during this rebuild. Well, we're figuring out, the
- 19:42coaches are figuring out, the organization's figuring out who is going to be the
- 19:48next generation of leaders, who is who is playing to which strengths on the
- 19:55ice, And it just wouldn't surprise me if the Flyers, given the bark
- 20:00of this past season, pushes them and gives them some momentum, even more
- 20:04momentum I think this coming year to say, you know what, we can
- 20:07do this. Everybody counted us out, everybody's going to continue to count us
- 20:11out. We're gonna We're gonna get through this and we're gonna get to the
- 20:14fucking playoffs and we're gonna make a little bit of a run. So that
- 20:17that's that's my first one. I don't know if you have much to say
- 20:19response to that, because it's Flyers, but well, I'll say this.
- 20:23They're a young team and it usually takes a spark season to kind of cap
- 20:29off, yeah, or to kind of kick off a big season. And
- 20:33they, excuse me, they played really well this year. They hadn't that
- 20:37that slide, it probably would have made the playoffs, and god knows,
- 20:40maybe they make a run this year. Who knows. But we're also at
- 20:45the point with this team that like it is so oberdue. Yes, my
- 20:48god, it's like, when's the last time they made any sort of run.
- 20:52It's twenty like a real run, it's been it's been a long time.
- 20:59Yes, Well, what's your what's your number two? Here? What
- 21:03is your number two? So my my number two is one that could could
- 21:07sneak into twenty twenty five as well. But I'm going to go off of
- 21:11the potential of a bad offseason for the Sixers and my my, I'm gonna
- 21:18go negative my next two. Okay, So you wouldn't be surprised if in
- 21:22the world of Philly sports this happened in twenty twenty four and Be'd asked for
- 21:26a trade. Ah. Yeah, I had a feeling you might be saying
- 21:30that one. So all the talk is Paul George is gonna come and we'll
- 21:34have a big three of George, Maxi and and then Be which basketball wise,
- 21:40Holy shit, does that make sense? Man? What a great three
- 21:42pairing that would be. And you just mix and shooters and good defenders around
- 21:47them and get a real point guard as well. Awesome if they could do
- 21:52it. I don't think it's going to happen. I'm not sure why PG
- 21:55three or thirteen whatever his name is. Uh, would he'd be eaving a
- 22:00situation He's like, I'm sick of this Kawhi Leonard guy being hurt all the
- 22:03time. I'm going to go to another team where the guy's hurt all the
- 22:06time. Any as well? Like, why would he do that? I
- 22:10think a lot of six Ers fans I think he's it's like a done deal.
- 22:14It's going to happen. I don't. I don't really see it myself.
- 22:17And if they just go into next season and sign a bunch of like
- 22:21Kelly ubres I love Kelly Ubray. Kelly Eubra ain't going to get you the
- 22:25finals. He can't be your third best player. Yeah. I just feel
- 22:26like if they don't have a great offseason, they don't bring all this talent
- 22:30in with all the cap space they have, and say they start out like,
- 22:36you know, twelve and thirty or something, twelve and twenty five,
- 22:40they're just having an off season and he looks and me looks sluggish, and
- 22:45he's not happy, and Maxi's scorn all the points, like I could not
- 22:48shock me. By end of December, I went out trade me. I
- 22:53want to move on. I could say it, I could see it there.
- 22:56There is a path to that you just outlined. It a crappy offseason
- 23:03and at but it leads me to believe that they then have to get they
- 23:07have to get Paul George. And my gosh, how many times is Lennon
- 23:10and I talking about Paul George. I've talked with other folks on here about
- 23:14Paul George too, and it's like, I'm honestly, I'm not like that
- 23:17excited if it were to happen. I mean, it might be cold.
- 23:19Mean, it's gonna be cool in some ways, but like I don't know,
- 23:23the guy's no spring Chicken here, and that that's the funny part was
- 23:29I was all pumped up about it, and then I brought I pulled up
- 23:32his basketball reference page on my phone. I'm like, holy shit, this
- 23:36is like his fifteenth year. Yes, he's like thirty four years old,
- 23:41Like what the hell happened? Like when did that happen? Like holy Signing
- 23:45him is not guarantee a title or anything, but it probably guarantees the commitment
- 23:52you showed to him that you want to win right to him, being's say
- 23:55yes. But if it doesn't happen, like I said, they just kind
- 23:59of sprinkle in veterans and some decent players. It's like you're walking a tight
- 24:03rope of him wanting the hell out of Philadelphia. So yeah, I do
- 24:07think at some point, and we're going to talk about this more over the
- 24:10course of the summer during this offseason, I think Darryl Morey may actually make
- 24:12a trade with somebody that we don't even know, that's not even on our
- 24:15radar at this point. Well, and Jeff, I think Maury knows that
- 24:19too. I think Moury knows, and beat is is is like one inch
- 24:25away from going I want out of here. Yeah, this isn't working,
- 24:27even though he's responsible for all this shit in beat for the whole fucking process
- 24:33at this point. But I think he knows, like I'm so close to
- 24:37him wanting out, I need. I have to nail this offseason. Yep,
- 24:41all right, Well my number two is we're moving along here deals with
- 24:45the Philadelphia Eagles, and it maybe it may sound a little bizarre. I'm
- 24:49gonna be talking about the linebacker position middle of the field from the defensive standpoint
- 24:55with our guest Lou Dibiassi in a little bit, but with the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 25:00it wouldn't surprise me if the Eagles linebackers are better than expected this coming
- 25:06year. And yes, we haven't seen much from Nakobe Dean because he has
- 25:11been injured during his entire tenure on this team. But I have I have
- 25:17this thing in the back of my mind where the right inside linebacker coming in
- 25:21Devin White, who is acquired during free agency, also Zach Bond as well,
- 25:26and you know where they're gonna. I mean, Nolan Smith is basically
- 25:30going to be a pass rusher, but I mean Vic Fangio. He may
- 25:33have him dropping into coverage every now and then. I think that this is
- 25:37a it's still a young group who has a very very high ceiling, and
- 25:41it would not surprise me if this Eagles linebacker corps this year really raises some
- 25:47eyebrows and really surprises us. And I think if Nikobe Dean actually does stay
- 25:52healthy, I think he's gonna show us something too, because regardless of his
- 25:55injuries, he's still been learning. He's still been learning with these players and
- 25:57this defense. I have some high hopes for this Eagles linebacker corps here.
- 26:03Eric, I'm glad you do. Listen when they when they drafted Dean,
- 26:08wasn't like the injury thing always on the table. Yeah. Yeah, So
- 26:12I'm not surprised that that's gone, that that's kind of going to come to
- 26:17fruition a little bit, but it kind of get better. You know,
- 26:19they haven't good they haven't had a good set of linebackers since they won the
- 26:23Super Bowl. Yep, back in twenty seventeen. T J. Edwards was
- 26:26great, I mean, but they they had to let him go in free
- 26:29agency. They weren't going to pay him and stuff, and he's he actually
- 26:32has turned out to be a pretty good linebacker, even for the Chicago Bears,
- 26:36and they haven't had a They did not have a legit defensive coordinator last
- 26:40year, So maybe maybe the addition of a Fangio could reignite the linebacking corp.
- 26:47My last one, yeah ties into that. And if the linebacking corps
- 26:51fails and the Eagles kind of kind of don't have a good start to the
- 26:56season, yeah, I wouldn't be shocked, Nick Sirian, he gets fired.
- 27:00Oh man, now that one might that one might leak into twenty twenty
- 27:04five as well. But man, the moves they made, Like they signed
- 27:10Saquon they have, They lock up their two receivers for a shit ton of
- 27:14money. They're paying their quarterback already, Like once you start paying guys.
- 27:18If if the if the coach can't make them win, the gm A getting
- 27:22fired, Yeah right, Like he ain't going anywhere, The owner ain't going
- 27:26anywhere. You're the only one left. They hired new coordinators all over the
- 27:30place. You're the only one left in the previous regime. So if this
- 27:33doesn't work and they are like, give me a record like five and six
- 27:41and they're floundering, right, yeah, who's on chopping block. It's it's
- 27:45gonna be no one else can get rid of. So I don't think they
- 27:48would do it during the season. But if things go really south and this
- 27:52whole thing implodes, him getting fired is probably I don't think I'm I don't
- 27:57think I'm like speaking out turn like that. He It could. It could
- 28:02absolutely happen if this doesn't go well, I'll tell you unless the defense absolutely
- 28:07shits the bed week after week after week, which which they did last year
- 28:11at the end of they did. But Vic Fangio, because he's Vic Fangio,
- 28:15is not getting fired. Kellen Moore coming over from the Chargers, but
- 28:19with the Dallas Cowboys for all those years and beloved in that particular town and
- 28:26just what he has meant to the NFC's division. I don't think he's getting
- 28:29fired either. I think you make a really good point here. You're not
- 28:32firing Howie. No, you're not firing. You're not firing Jalen. You
- 28:36know, firing the receivers. Right, there's just one guy left to fire,
- 28:38and he's the one. So all right, I like it. Well,
- 28:42my number one, we're gonna go back to the Philadelphia Phillies here,
- 28:45buddy, because look, as as much as I love the season, we're
- 28:49gonna remember this season for a very long time, I think. But it
- 28:55wouldn't surprise me. It would not surprise me here in twenty twenty four,
- 29:00within this Philly season if the Phillies started to slide after the All Star Game.
- 29:04And I say this because not from necessarily an offensive standpoint. This bullpen
- 29:11is fucking incredible. And we haven't seen too too many incredible bullpens down at
- 29:18Citizens Bank Park and beyond, and holy shit, part of me says,
- 29:23they just can't keep it up. They just can't keep up this dominance,
- 29:27for God's say. And I'm just talking about the bullpen. I'm not talking
- 29:30about the starting rotation at all. When you've got Wheeler Nola Sanchez and you've
- 29:37got Ranger Squarez just absolutely murdering too. I'm not even talking about the starting
- 29:41rotation. I'm saying the bullpen is so on fire. It wouldn't surprise me
- 29:48if we started to see some slide after the All Star break with regard to
- 29:51the bullpen, to kind of just get things back to some sort of i'd
- 29:53say, quote normalcy within the game of baseball, So it wouldn't surprise me.
- 29:59I don't mean to end this on a Debbie Downer note here, but
- 30:02it just wouldn't surprise me. I can't believe I'm the positive Phillies fan in
- 30:06this one, I know, but but it doesn't negate my longtime theory that
- 30:12like one year you have an awesome bullpen, the next year it's gonna be
- 30:15shit, guarantee, and then the next year it's gonna be awesome. They've
- 30:21had a good bullpen for like what two years now in a row, right,
- 30:25like the fact they're playing really well now, but this is lights out
- 30:27dominant. I mean, they are lights out dominant right now. Like Jeff
- 30:32Hoffman Jesus Christ, I know where the fuck he come from. But what
- 30:36I what I will say is though that's the one spot you can make some
- 30:40small moves, small trades and upgrade. That's that's that's probably the easiest one
- 30:45to have an upgrade, especially when like you have plenty of money, you
- 30:48have lots of trade assets. Yeah, and you have a lot you have
- 30:52a lot of teams that suck ass, Like the A's are just out there
- 30:55going. Do you want our bullpen? Guys come takeing. H my god,
- 31:00give it. It's like major League, like give us a new plane
- 31:03or a new uh ice tug or whatever like like that's the one spot to
- 31:08have some upgrades. But I completely agree with you, like, how can
- 31:11that? How can we have a good bullpen three years in a row?
- 31:15Like it doesn't seem possible. I know, I know, it's like something's
- 31:19got to slide here, but uh, let's keep enjoying it. We'll keep
- 31:22enjoying it, and we hope you're enjoying the content here at the PSD podcast

- 32:29We're gonna be back with some more content. Stick with us, all right,
- 32:34We are back, and uh let's get into some storylines here, at
- 32:39least one storyline here that a lot of us have been following. And it's
- 32:45it's just a damn shame, man, it is sad. And it is
- 32:49a shame that there are certain media figures, male media figures, I should
- 32:54say, that are having difficulty covering the issues that are surrounding Can Clark and
- 33:00her early tenure in the w n B. A lot of hot takes out
- 33:06there, and I swear to God, Eric, I'm at a point where
- 33:07I'm like, how, how how are a lot of men and males within
- 33:12this industry they're talking about sports and they don't know how to talk about this
- 33:15woman. They don't know, they don't know how to address certain situations that
- 33:22are happening, especially within the w NBA. And what I'm talking about,
- 33:24folks, is the recent Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky game that really ignited some
- 33:31controversy within the w n B a where Caitlin Clark received a cheap shot from
- 33:38uh, do you say it Kennity Carter or Kennedy Carter. I think it's
- 33:44Kennedy Carter. Kennedy Carter, Okay, because she spells it c h E
- 33:46n n E d y. Anyway, Anyway, it brought attention to the
- 33:52the the very intense physical play that has endured for Caitlin Clark throughout her rookie
- 33:59season. And boy, there's a lot of hot takes out there, Eric,
- 34:02A lot of guys in the sports world just well, you know,
- 34:07she should be she should know what's coming her way. And there's a lot
- 34:12of nonsense out there, and opinions are divided out there on what kind of
- 34:17player she is, what kind of player she isn't thus far, I had
- 34:22a feeling something like this was coming, to be honest with you, after
- 34:25her trajectory, what she did at Iowa, how she became an icon for
- 34:30women in sports, and you figure, when somebody is that high, people
- 34:37are just going to try to tear them down. It's how the world works.
- 34:39We've seen it time and time again. But what's sad is that somebody
- 34:44who is able to bring so many people together and do it within the realm
- 34:49of the sports world where women specifically were getting a lot more recognition, that
- 34:55that is somehow now being tainted. At least that's how I'm seeing it.
- 34:59That's my opinion, Eric, So I don't know what are your thoughts on
- 35:00this and where these stories are going here, Well, the advent of social
- 35:07media has just sped up the hot take market. Like I think of Michael
- 35:15Jordan, right, and I'm not comparing Caitlin Clark to Michael Jordan because it's
- 35:19just completely two separate entities, completely like he was the greatest basketball player of
- 35:22all time, but he came to the league in eighty four, I believe,
- 35:29and we built him up for years. Man, it's like almost nine
- 35:34years before he had any bad publicity, right, and around ninety three we
- 35:38all got sick of him and all of a sudden it was like, he's
- 35:42a gambling addict, he's an asshole, and it led to him leaving basketball
- 35:45and going to do baseball for a year and a half along with the death
- 35:49is thought it was a whole thing, right, But we're now in the
- 35:52age where nine years is astronomically long for a hot take and trying to trying
- 35:59to tear down on somebody that we kind of put on a pedestal, right,
- 36:02Caitlin Clark's been in the league for what a six weeks? Two weeks?
- 36:07Yep. It's absurd how quickly like the hot takes on her have happened,
- 36:14and how like people are trying to find holes in her game, a
- 36:17hole in their life, that kind of thing, and holes on the team
- 36:20too, by the way, you know reports out there the teammates haven't been
- 36:23defending her. They've been notably absent from defending their teammate in a more forstful
- 36:29manner, which it's exaggerated. I'm sure the teammates love her, they don't
- 36:34have a shit like I'm pretty sure the Inana fever like the like their plane
- 36:39rides are probably a lot nicer now like the other game. Right, I'm
- 36:46sure they have like a lot of private jets, they have a probably probably
- 36:50a lot of security hotels. They probably get to go to nicer clubs because
- 36:53they have to have security. It's not like when Shaq joined the Magic.
- 36:57Right when Shaq joined the Magic, the Magic were like like a bumpkin NBA
- 37:01franchise, like they had nothing, and then like they were they were in
- 37:07Orlando, Florida, and they had they were a pathetic team, and Shack
- 37:09came and they were doing steak and lobster and like had in private chats that
- 37:14kind of thing. So she has upgraded the entire franchise and probably the lives
- 37:17of her teammates. So I don't believe a word of that. And she's
- 37:21also the fact that we're talking about it right now. You and I have
- 37:24not talked about the w NBA ever or women's sports for the most part for
- 37:30the what years of the show. But here we are talking about Calen Clark,
- 37:36a singular basketball player in the WNBA, and we've never done that prior
- 37:39to her arrival. So obviously something's working. So does it surprise me that
- 37:46the other women in the league are so hard on her and go after her
- 37:52so much? It surprises me a little just in that, like she brings
- 37:57a lot of cachet, not just for herself, but for the people kind
- 38:00of throwing elbows in her face or the other franchises, Like she the WNBA
- 38:08is like on the world map. Now, it's on first Take every day
- 38:12on ESPN. Yes, we're talking about it. Pat McAfee, that fucking
- 38:15douchebag talks about her and the NBA. I'm sure he never even thought about
- 38:20women's sports before this occurred, and I can't. It's it's incredible to me
- 38:29that, like, it's kind of nice that there's like someone in that league
- 38:34that we all want to talk about now. But the reaction to her and
- 38:37her arrival is really bizarre and a bit much, in my opinion. But
- 38:42I think it's like I think it's it happens so much quicker because of social
- 38:46media and because we all want our opinion out there and we all think so
- 38:50fast now we have so quickly, And I think also because of what the
- 38:55like if you look at the comments he made right Colnor bitch or whatever.
- 39:00Like, you have a lot of people that aren't very intelligent and they're on
- 39:05TV and they have to come up with quick quips about people and especially and
- 39:09they don't. They're not they don't know how to do it. And it's
- 39:13like, I'm not surprised this dunderhead that ESPN's given twenty million a year or
- 39:17two is saying dumb shit about the new star that because he's he has no
- 39:23idea how to how to handle a situation like this exactly exactly. And look,
- 39:28I think there's also something to be said for the fact that we've seen
- 39:31time and time again in the world of sports, how when somebody who is
- 39:37dominant in the college ranks and they move to the professional ranks, guess what,
- 39:40sometimes there's a struggle. You know, you have a dominant cornerback and
- 39:45you know, playing for I'll just make up LSU or something like that,
- 39:50they come over to the NFL and it's a bit tough for him. It's
- 39:52one of the toughest positions to go from college to professional sports. It's the
- 39:58cornerback position, even the quarterback position. You have dominant quarterbacks throughout the court.
- 40:04I mean, how many times do we see quarterbacks who are dominant in
- 40:07the college ranks fail as a professional football player. I'm not saying Caitlin Clark
- 40:12is gonna be like this by any stretch, but we see the struggle sometimes
- 40:15shifting over from one brand of play in sports to another brand of play in
- 40:21sports just because the professionalism is that much more elite and just overall better.
- 40:28But the fact of the matter is, and you hit the nail on the
- 40:30head of Eric, how she has brought people into the fold. Here in
- 40:37a sports world that is just obsessed with statistics, numbers don't lie. Eighty
- 40:42two thousand, eight hundred and fifty seven fans have attended five Indiana Fever home
- 40:46games thus far this season, and that is more than they drew in all
- 40:52twenty home games last season. At the end of the day, again,
- 40:55in a sports world that's obsessed with statistics, that's the type of stuff that
- 41:00matters because she's bringing people into the fold. And in the end of Fever,
- 41:05they absolutely love this, they absolutely do. But it's this these media
- 41:09figures that just don't know what to do with themselves when when something quote controversial
- 41:15comes up, Look she got shoved to the floor. It's a sports world.
- 41:19She probably didn't. She probably didn't care at the end of the day,
- 41:22you know. And it really, it really kind of just bothers me.
- 41:25The lack of well we're talking sports logic, the lack of logic that
- 41:31there is out there when it comes to sports commentators, announcers, quote analysts,
- 41:37and even sports entertainment personalities. It bothers the shit out of me.
- 41:43I have no qualms with her opponents going after her. Yeah, that makes
- 41:47perfect sense. Man. They just joined the same league she did. They
- 41:52are going after her because she's she's the top dog. Yep. Whether she's
- 41:55the best player or not. She's having fifteen points as a rookie. That's
- 41:59fucking pretty deep. Good. No, and and and they should they like
- 42:05she She's good. I'm gonna take her down. That's how basketball should work
- 42:07like that. That's like look at the bad Boy Pistons against Jordan, like
- 42:13basketball history. That's how it should work. But you have to think about
- 42:16this, like her arrival in the league is not like what are the top
- 42:22three quarterbacks take in the NFL draft, right, Kayleb Williams, Jane Daniels
- 42:27and what Drake may Right, all three of them coming into the NFL doesn't
- 42:32even equate to her coming in w n B A, Like she brings so
- 42:37much fame in cachet to the league that needed it really badly, and it's
- 42:43it's not talked about all the time on on on ESPN and this show apparently,
- 42:46and like those three don't even like compare to what she brings to the
- 42:52league. So it's it's a really interesting topic to watch and how it's gonna
- 42:58like it's going to evolve because it people it's really people don't know how to
- 43:04deal with it. They don't like to watch Pat McAfee just like just stumble
- 43:09through things trying to explain what's going on. He has no idea how he's
- 43:14a complete idiot. He has no idea how to like how to put put
- 43:16his thoughts together around this thing. Yeah, because she is completely evolving a
- 43:21league that has that was kind of wasn't ready for this, Like she kind
- 43:25of came along and like shot them twenty years ahead where they should have been.
- 43:31And I and then you you've got first take, and you've got Steven
- 43:36A. Smith staying saying stuff and like that was an awesome I'm sure you
- 43:39watched it. Monica what's her face? But they went she tore him down.
- 43:45It's very very or I should say, it's not often, in fact,
- 43:50hardly ever often that Steven A. Smith is speechless from somebody making a
- 43:53point and absolutely murdering, murdering him on the air, and that that is
- 44:00what she did. He was speechless. He's like, I can't believe you're
- 44:02saying where his response is. I can't believe you're saying this. I can't
- 44:07believe you're saying this right now? She was right. Yes, he had
- 44:10no idea what to say. Deep down, he's a smart I've seen interviews
- 44:15with him. He's a smart dude. Yes, and he knew he was
- 44:17wrong, and he was like, you're calling me out on my fucking show,
- 44:21lady. Yeah, that's wanted to do what he was going through his
- 44:23mind. But I'll tell you he's not unhappy. WNBA owners gott to be
- 44:28thrilled with this. Oh absolutely. You talk about the attendants and on my
- 44:32Instagram feed now it's it's the entrance of players now and their outfits. Yeah,
- 44:38it's it's all over Instagram and Twitter and it's like, holy shit,
- 44:43like this is a real thing now, Like this league kind of kind of
- 44:47just kind of like kind of just rode the wave of the NBA. That's
- 44:52a real thing, and she's the reason for it, no matter what whoever
- 44:55Pat Actor or Steven Ay Smith wants to talk about. And the I think
- 45:02just being a fan of hers in college, I think she can she can
- 45:07withstand anything that comes her way. I think so. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 45:10All right, Well, we're going from basketball talking about those storylines there to
- 45:17baseball and the specific Phillies story that we have this week. I read it
- 45:23on one of the sites we like to follow every now and then that Balls
- 45:29out of here dot com. It's a fan sided site, and they reported
- 45:32on the fact that and we've talked about how the Phillies have been instrumental and
- 45:37getting more involved in the international market, and it was really interesting how the
- 45:44Phillies really became serious about targeting and making sure that they are branding themselves appropriately
- 45:52in the Dominican Republic. So what they have done was they renamed three playing
- 45:58fields this past week at their Dominican Baseball Academy after three former Phillies greats,
- 46:07Juan Samuel, Bobby Abrau, and Carlos Ruiz. Three fields down there named
- 46:12for those players, and all three of those former players, from my understanding,
- 46:16were on hand for the dedication of those fields. But it's it's really
- 46:22it's not just about the gesture with those with those Phillies greats, but it's
- 46:27this Phillies organization that's really trying to ingrain themselves eric into the Dominican Republic community
- 46:32more in terms of understanding whop certain players are who could potentially be coming up
- 46:42through the Dominican Baseball Academy, you know, potentially getting to know their families
- 46:45more, just you know, making sure that they realized also that the community
- 46:52down there knows that the Phillies are invested in them. And it's good to
- 46:57see because there was a there was a while where the Philadelphia Phillies are organization.
- 47:00I mean we're going back to the Matt Clintac days and even some of
- 47:02the Rubin Tomorrow Junior days where just not very active in the international market.
- 47:08So this was a really cool article to read and just knowing the Phillies are
- 47:15going down this path, I think it shows that there are a franchise that
- 47:19really does go above and beyond when it comes to one honoring former players whose
- 47:23contributions on the field left a certain legacy, but there are franchise now that
- 47:29is willing to make certain investments to see success in the future, and they're
- 47:34really smart. The marketing department was really wise to choose the three players that
- 47:38they did because they covered the eighties, nineties, and two thousands, yep,
- 47:43and almost in tens with those three players. One Samuell one of my
- 47:46old favorites. Loved him. That motherfucker struck out two hundred times a year,
- 47:51yes forever, but was one of my favorites. He played second,
- 47:53played a great second base hunter home runs in his career with the Phillies.
- 47:58And then Bobby Bray was the obvious one, and then Chooch like so smart
- 48:02and yes the general I called them. We call them the general all the
- 48:06time. But to plant your flag in that country, uh, that has
- 48:10so many of the baseball history there, I have it right here. The
- 48:15best Dominican baseball players Albert Poohols, David Ortiz's Vla Guerrero, Sammy Sosaman and
- 48:20Rimirez all timers. Dude, like like that is a Patro Martinez, like
- 48:25my god. As a really small country if you look at it on a
- 48:30map and the baseball talent they've they've produced is incredible. And they're also uh,
- 48:36they're also huge on traditionalism, Like they really and like and and like
- 48:42like Dominican Republican pride. And for the Phillies to like plant their fag,
- 48:46plant their flag where they did, and to say we love you, we
- 48:51respect you, it really goes a long way, probably to some of the
- 48:53prospects saying like, oh, the Phillies they honor the players that we look
- 48:58up to, Like that's pretty cool and really smart, really smart for the
- 49:00Phillies. Absolutely, as it was a short story for us there. And
- 49:06Eric, I'm gonna let you go before we get to our interview this week
- 49:08here, buddy, any final thoughts before I let you go, before we
- 49:13get to this Eagles talk. I got two and a half weeks of nothing
- 49:16before my job starts, so gi me a big slob. I can just
- 49:23see you at your dining room table just eating a cheesecake. I prefer ice
- 49:29cream. Okay, all right, ice cream guy, Well get a gallon.
- 49:35Yes, I love to statue. It's one of my favorites. Two
- 49:39half weeks of that crap, I gotta tell you, I've been eating a
- 49:42lot of bad. I shouldn't say a lot. It's not as much as
- 49:45I want to. Seriously, I do a pint of Ben and Jerry's a
- 49:47week, I'll do like a third one night, and I'll do that three
- 49:52times. Or if I'm like all right, I'm already at a half,
- 49:54I'm like all right, I'll put it away and then two days later I
- 49:57finished the other half. But man, Ben and Jerry's s'mores and Boston cream
- 50:01Pie, Holy shit, so good. I love the good Boston cream Pie.
- 50:06The what's the one? Uh? One of the late night guys has
- 50:10a great one, the Cone one? Oh? Is it is? It?
- 50:14Is it? It's It's no, It's Fallin, isn't it not Jimmy
- 50:17Fallon the other one he the oh my god, he was on Comedy Central
- 50:22for years. He has a late night show now. I can't think of
- 50:27it. Kimmel, No, not Kimmel, the guy the I can't think
- 50:32of it, summit, bitch. But he had one, had pretzels and
- 50:37like cones in it. It was so fucking good. Oh my gosh,
- 50:40yeah, I know, I can't remember. I was gonna try to sturt
- 50:44anyway here. I can't. I'm not gonna have time to search it.
- 50:47There was no half pint. There was like, just put the whole fucking
- 50:50thing in my mouth. Care I'll go run three miles Tomorrow'll run it off.
- 50:54Go have some ice cream, my friend. All right, that's gonna
- 50:58do it for us here. But we still got some interview to get to
- 51:01in just a bit. Got some Eagles talk coming your way. Let's take
- 51:05a break, we'll be right back. All right, we are back,
- 51:08and now let's get to some Philadelphia Eagles talk. We've got Lou Dbasse from
- 51:13the Locked On Eagles podcast joining us right now. It's what we're throwing down
- 51:16on the table and now on the table. It is great to have him
- 51:22back on the show. He is one of the hosts at the Locked On
- 51:27Eagles podcast. I listen, I would say a good four times a week,
- 51:30and I hope I don't upset him by saying that, because I know
- 51:32they're churning out the content over at the Locked On Eagles podcast. Again,
- 51:37he is the one of the hosts over there at Locked on Birds on Twitter
- 51:40and you can find him and follow him on the Twitter slash x at dbse
- 51:45Loe. We've got the one and only Lou debasse. How you doing,
- 51:49buddy, what's up, Jeff? It's been a long time, but I
- 51:52appreciate you having me on the show. And yeah, we're still churning out
- 51:54five episodes a week, even during kind of the dead zone of the offseason.
- 51:58So I appreciate you listening day. And yes, we still got OTAs
- 52:00though going on right now. So I feel like we always got Eagles football
- 52:04to a certain degree, and I think for the real sickohs, even this
- 52:06time of year, they still want to hear about football, absolutely, and
- 52:09look, OTA's there's something right, there's something going on. And in fact,
- 52:14I mean we're gonna get into I want to get into the defense first
- 52:16with this Eagles team in terms of what we're gonna be seeing this year,
- 52:20but in terms of what was actually seen with OTAs. With regard to the
- 52:23defense, we had James brad Berry. You know, he was lining up
- 52:27at the safety position. From my understanding, slot corner, that's what they're
- 52:30gonna use him for. And thought it was a pretty interesting storyline given where
- 52:34this defensive backfield is going. Oh yeah, I'm fascinated by the defensive backfield
- 52:38this year, especially in training camp. I'm jealous of the beer porters they
- 52:42get to watch this unfold every day. Is Yeah, like Fangio kind of
- 52:45just sees he has, you know, twelve players at this point that have
- 52:49a real argument to make the fifty three man roster. A corner and he's
- 52:52trying to mix a match. See who can play on the outside, who
- 52:53plays better on the inside, who can play some safety, See who's versatile.
- 52:59Like he's just throwing every at the wall right now at that position and
- 53:01seeing what sticks. For Bradbury though they're trying him at all these spots and
- 53:06he got a quote unquote injury today, it feels a little fishy. I
- 53:09still don't believe he's going to be on the roster throughout the entire training camp
- 53:14process. But yeah, I think Fangio right now is just really trying to
- 53:16experiment with all the options he has a corner. It's a fascinating position this
- 53:21year, which is it's good man, because for a long time this position
- 53:23was weak. It wasn't top heavy, and it really wasn't that deep either
- 53:27exactly. It was rather neglected at times. So we're going to get into
- 53:30one particular cornerback in just a bit. But look, I think it's responsible
- 53:35at a Philadelphia Eagles and the coaching staff trying to figure out if James Bradberry
- 53:38can play somewhere else on the field. I think it's responsible coaching at this
- 53:43point to try to figure it out. Like you, Lou, I'm under
- 53:45the assumption that he's probably not going to be on this team during this twenty
- 53:49twenty four twenty twenty five season. So as we're getting into the defense here,
- 53:54I really wanted to talk about two specific players at different positions, and
- 54:00I was astonished because you recently uploaded a podcast over at Locked on Eagles that
- 54:05dove into what I have been thinking about in recent weeks. It hit my
- 54:08feed and I was like, oh my god. I'm like, there's some
- 54:09kind of telepathy thing going on with Lewin myself here. Yeah, you uploaded
- 54:15a show specifically about CJ. Gardner Johnson and Devin White how they are going
- 54:20to be significant keys to the eagles twenty twenty four success. And I loved
- 54:23what you were saying with both of these players. I mean CJ. Gardner
- 54:28Johnson in the secondary, Devin White in the middle of the field. So
- 54:30I'm wondering, can you kind of go into your thoughts for folks who may
- 54:34not have heard that particular podcast about you know what your your particular thoughts are
- 54:39about these guys and what essentially you and I have been thinking about, even
- 54:43though we haven't actually talked about this. So feel free. Yeah, no,
- 54:45absolutely so. I was thinking about this because there's been so many talking
- 54:49points about Nikobe Dean's future and how we hope long term he can be that
- 54:52green dot player that every down linebacker for you, who he was at Georgia,
- 54:57be the leader of your defense what you had t J. Edwards,
- 55:00and I think Cooper de Jean's a player coming in because you also drafted Quinnion
- 55:05Mitchell. There's not as much pressure for him to be like your CB one
- 55:07of the future on the boundary. You can now say, well, maybe
- 55:09we can utilize his skill set better. We can maximize his ceiling by moving
- 55:14him around the formation as a Swiss Army knife. Malcolm Jenkins like, do
- 55:16it all player in the slot, play safety, place him outside corner,
- 55:22right. I mean, those are some players that you want those roles to
- 55:24pan out for long term, but you look at some other guys for twenty
- 55:28twenty four, I think those roles are going to go to more so Chauncey
- 55:31Gardner, Johnson and Devin White than those younger players. And you got to
- 55:36think too, Chauncey Gartner, Johnson and Devin White, these aren't players that
- 55:39are over the age of thirty, like they're in their prime, and they
- 55:42could be long term pillars that fill those roles as well. So to me,
- 55:46I think Chauncey, especially over Cooper Dejean, is going to be that
- 55:50guy playing deep safety, playing in the box, playing slot. And Devin
- 55:54White he's only what twenty six years old years old exactly. It's unbelievable.
- 56:01He's got the skill set, he has the track record in the past.
- 56:04At one point, this guy was an All Pro linebacker. Nakobe Dean as
- 56:07good as he was at Georgia, we've never seen him do it at the
- 56:09pro level. So I don't think we should sleep on Chauncey and Devin,
- 56:15not just for twenty twenty four when I think they're going to be instrumental,
- 56:17but even long term as other options that can fill that role that we're really
- 56:22hoping Dean and Dejene kind of step into. I think they have at least
- 56:25four guys that you know have that potential, and hey, if they all
- 56:29become those kind of players, the more the merrier. Yeah. Absolutely,
- 56:32And folks, I would highly recommend you go over to the Lockdown Eagles podcast.
- 56:37It was a great, great episode that Lou put up again talking about
- 56:40CJ. Gardner, Johnson, Devin White and why there were significant keys to
- 56:44the Eagles twenty twenty four success. Again, highly recommend you going over there.
- 56:47And I do wonder, you know, as we're moving along with the
- 56:50conversation here, Lou, I do wonder about Quinnon Mitchell, how he's going
- 56:54to perform right out of the gate. I mean, we know that transitioning
- 56:57over from college cornerback play to NFL cornerback play is one of the most difficult
- 57:01things that could be done in all of sports, you know, But we
- 57:05know that Mitchell. He's got the speed to carry receivers deep. He's got
- 57:08great vision and zone coverage. We've seen that, we saw that in college.
- 57:13He's not afraid to be physical too out of a break to deliver a
- 57:15blow to a receiver either, which I love that physicality when it comes to
- 57:19his possible growing pains. So to say, what do you think that looks
- 57:23like for Mitchell kind of right out of the gate this season. Maybe what
- 57:27kind of hurdles he may have to get over. Yeah, So, unlike
- 57:30even a Cooper Degene or certain corners that would come into the league, there's
- 57:34not any one thing about Quignen's skills that I'm saying, oh, that might
- 57:37be a problem at the NFL level when he has to go up against Cedee
- 57:40Lamb or some of the best receivers in football. As you mentioned, he
- 57:45has the speed, He is not an undersized corner. He can play physical
- 57:47if he wants to. He proved to the Senior Bowl that even though at
- 57:51Toledo he played ninety nine percent of the time off ball zone coverage off the
- 57:55line of scrimmage, that he could also play press man against some of the
- 57:59best receivers in the country. So yeah, there's not really one thing I'm
- 58:01like, this is going to be something he has to work on at the
- 58:05NFL level. I would just say adjusting to Again, I don't care that
- 58:08he played at Toledo, but it's going to be quite a change covering NFL
- 58:13receivers like a CD Lamb compared to somebody that played in the MAC. When
- 58:16it comes to the balance of speed and elite route running that a lot of
- 58:21these receivers have that combination. There are some college receivers that are amazing route
- 58:23runners, but they don't have the four to three speed. There's some guys
- 58:27that have the four to three speed that don't have the route running separation,
- 58:30And so I think that's going to be just the biggest thing is adjusting to
- 58:34how complete wide receivers are at the NFL level. But I really do think
- 58:38that week in Mobile at the Senior Bowl was huge in that area because he
- 58:42was really able to grow in that way as a man coverage corner and cover
- 58:46so many different types of receivers like a Roman Wilson from Michigan who's more of
- 58:51a shifty slock guy, and then he goes up against a six to seven
- 58:53player who's now an eagle in Johnny Wilson. So yeah, yeah, I
- 58:57think overall, it's just adjusting to how incredible these receivers are at this level.
- 59:02He wasn't used to that at Toledo for sure. Yeah. I think
- 59:06I have less concern with regard to where the secondary is right now, quite
- 59:09frankly, lou than the concerns that I have with regard to the defensive line,
- 59:15to be honest with you, but giving it a lot of thought more
- 59:17and more. I mean I've gone on record saying on this podcast, I'm
- 59:20concerned about with the productivity from the defensive line might actually look like this year.
- 59:24I mean, BG as yet another year older. We still love him
- 59:28and still adore him, but look a you know, Ages really going to
- 59:32catch up to him. They lost Son Raddick. We don't know what Bryce
- 59:37huff snapcount is necessarily going to be at this point. There's a lot of
- 59:40question marks, I think with regard to this defensive line. So I'm wondering,
- 59:44what's your level of concern as it pertains to the defensive line this year
- 59:47and how they're gonna be able to get opposing team or get two opposing team's
- 59:52quarterbacks this season. No, it's a great point, and I'm kind of
- 59:54torn on the edge group. I think it has a kind of like most
- 59:58of this defense, it's a lot of potential and not a lot of proven
- 1:00:00ability. Right, So I think as a whole unit, they're gonna be
- 1:00:04much better in the sack department and just from a consistency standpoint than they were
- 1:00:07last year. I think they're deeper, I think they're younger, I think
- 1:00:09they're faster, and all of these guys do present elite potential. Like Josh
- 1:00:15Sweat has shown that at times he can be one of the best pass rushers
- 1:00:19in football. I think Bryce Huff statistically the last few years, has been
- 1:00:22one of the most efficient players at getting to the quarterback. Is he in
- 1:00:25every down run stopper? Yet we're not so sure. Nolan Smith again has
- 1:00:30this is a former first round pick, right, and then Jalyx Hunt who
- 1:00:34has all the potential in the world. Brandon Graham still can be a pretty
- 1:00:37solid rotational player for you. So as a whole, I think that they're
- 1:00:40going to be better than last year. But at the same time, like
- 1:00:44you mentioned, there's question marks on all these players. Sweat did disappear last
- 1:00:47year. He's never been like the guy on the edge. Nolan Smith is
- 1:00:52in year two, didn't show a lot as a rookie. Bryce Huff again,
- 1:00:55he's never been in every down player. They're gonna need him to probably
- 1:00:59be that player more in Philly than he was in New York. So is
- 1:01:01there going to be one? Is one of these guys going to step up
- 1:01:05as the guy that you can always rely on to get to the quarterback,
- 1:01:07like Hassan Reddick did. Like in the clutch fourth quarter two minutes to go,
- 1:01:12you need somebody to step up. That's who Hassan was like, we
- 1:01:15need to you know, this unit's better than it was last year, but
- 1:01:19we need to give Hassan red a credit. That wasn't just some good pass
- 1:01:22rusher. That to me, Jeff was a top five player, yes at
- 1:01:24his position from the last three four years, and he was one of the
- 1:01:28most clutch players in the NFL. So I don't know, you're probably going
- 1:01:31to replace him with strength of numbers. I don't know if one guy will
- 1:01:35become that Hassan Reddick, but it's a really fascinating position to see who kind
- 1:01:38of emerges as that guy to replace number seven or if it again is just
- 1:01:43kind of by a committee approach. Absolutely, And as you know, before
- 1:01:45we get over to the offense, I think too, it is something I've
- 1:01:49been giving more thought to low is the fact that I think the player's relationship
- 1:01:54with Vic Fangio is going to play a tremendous factor into how this defense really
- 1:02:00does produce throughout this coming season. Because more and more. I see it
- 1:02:06time and time again, whether it's with NBA teams, whether it's with hockey
- 1:02:09teams, baseball teams. That relationship that players have with their coaching staff means
- 1:02:15everything in the world. And with Vic Fangio coming in, and there were
- 1:02:20questions and I've seen some of your tweets in the past about you know,
- 1:02:23Vic Fangio, some of the relationships that he had with some of the players
- 1:02:27in Miami, and I'm like, Oh, crap, is this gonna is
- 1:02:30this? Is this not gonna work out for this defense and for these players.
- 1:02:34This defense has all the talent in the world on paper, but that
- 1:02:37relationship, I think if it manifests itself in a way that we're all hoping,
- 1:02:42good things are gonna happen. But that's where I have some trepidation as
- 1:02:45well. No, I agree, And it's a huge, huge part of
- 1:02:49this puzzle, especially when you have so many young players that are trying to
- 1:02:52develop, Like it's even more important now than like twenty twenty two when they
- 1:02:55had so many veterans on this team on all three levels. Now it's even
- 1:02:59more important for your coordinator because he, like right now, Vic Fangio is
- 1:03:02responsible for developing Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith and Quinya Mitchell on
- 1:03:07every young kid in the second area and at pinebacker, Like this defense is
- 1:03:12so young and filled with first and second and third round picks that, yeah,
- 1:03:15I think it's a great point. And you know hopefully that that Miami's
- 1:03:19stuff wasn't really all that. There wasn't much basis to it, and it
- 1:03:22was just a couple guys, because yeah, we've seen in the past that
- 1:03:25there's some coaches that can hold back better talent because it's just not the right
- 1:03:29scheme fit or that relationship's not there. Like I always use the comparison of
- 1:03:32Razeuol Douglas and Jim Schwartz. Jim Schwartz never knew how to use Razuol Douglas.
- 1:03:37It's why guys like Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills always got preference. Yep.
- 1:03:40And now Razool is a much better player than all of them in Green
- 1:03:44Bay and now in Buffalo. So yeah, it's a great point. Man,
- 1:03:46like Fangio, there's a lot riding on vic in twenty twenty four for
- 1:03:50the Eagles, absolutely, and how that relationship just manifests itself with the players.
- 1:03:53So all right, let's move over to the offense here, and specifically
- 1:03:58this Eagles offense line, a line and unit that has always been very dominant.
- 1:04:02Year after year. They're always toward the top of the NFL. As
- 1:04:04we know, we've become very spoiled as Eagles fans watching this offensive line year
- 1:04:11after year. But of course, losing Jason Kelcey and having two players at
- 1:04:15two new starting positions this year, lou the center and the right guard positions,
- 1:04:18it's going to be interesting to watch for sure. And the consistency in
- 1:04:23chemistry is something that I've been giving a lot of thought to as well,
- 1:04:26and how that's gonna work, how that right guard and Lane Johnson are going
- 1:04:29to work with each other, and just how, you know, appearing that
- 1:04:32it's going to be Cam Jurgens at center, how he's going to be able
- 1:04:35to take over that quote Jason Kelsey's role, even though I don't think it's
- 1:04:39necessarily possible for somebody to step into those shoes. So I'm wondering, though,
- 1:04:43with two new starting positions on this offensive line, what's your level of
- 1:04:48concern with that right interior side of that offensive line. Yeah, it's definitely
- 1:04:53going to be an adjustment for sure. Yeah, and no, you're not
- 1:04:56going to replace Jason Kelsey four. But I will say I'm pretty calm because
- 1:05:00I just have that much faith in Jeff Stotlin to make this right. And
- 1:05:04you look at Cam Jurgens. I was really impressed by the way he filled
- 1:05:08in at right guard last year. Isaac Sayamalu was a stud in twenty twenty
- 1:05:11two. Those weren't, you know, small shoes To fill in his own
- 1:05:14part, Cam Jurgens goes to his more natural position, learning from Jason Kelcey
- 1:05:17last year. I think he's gonna be fine. And then with Tyler Steen,
- 1:05:20I'm a bigger fan of Stein than most. I think during the draft
- 1:05:24process people were trying to like there was this talk about, well, if
- 1:05:27you draft the tackle, he needs to be able to play right guard,
- 1:05:30he has to start this year. I'm like, well, sure, it'd
- 1:05:30be nice if he had that versatility, but are we just forgetting about the
- 1:05:33kid that they would have drafted in the second round and if they didn't trade
- 1:05:36down and take him at the top of the third And Tyler Steen, who's
- 1:05:40an Alabama player who Lane Johnson compared to Brandon Brooks last year. Jeff stout
- 1:05:45made that same comparison yesterday in his presconcent. Great. Yeah, I don't
- 1:05:48think we should sleep on Tyler Steen, and I think he's a really smart,
- 1:05:51intelligent player. Does he have the size and the skills of a Jordan
- 1:05:55by Alatta or even a Makai Becten behind him, No, but he's smart.
- 1:06:00And I was really Jeff last summer during the preseason. I was really
- 1:06:02impressed by how he handled Stoutland throwing a lot on his plate in the preseason.
- 1:06:06There were you know, at one point in every game he was playing
- 1:06:11like every position, he was playing tackle, he was playing both guard spots.
- 1:06:14Yeah, and that to me was really impressive. So I don't know
- 1:06:16if they're going to be Kelsey and Brooks, like you know, we've been
- 1:06:20used to, we've kind of been spoiled. But I think when you also
- 1:06:24have three other elite pillars in May Allota, Dickerson, and Lane, I
- 1:06:27think Steen and Jurgens can be guys you win with. You're probably not going
- 1:06:30to win because of them, but you have three other studs up front that
- 1:06:33those two are not going to be players that hold you back. And I
- 1:06:36think they'll continue to develop and get better as the year goes on. It's
- 1:06:40going to be fascinating to watch overall. And I think the offense in general
- 1:06:43is going to be kind of fascinating given the fact that there's a new offensive
- 1:06:47coordinator in Kellen Moore, and of course everyone is just talking about how we're
- 1:06:51likely to see more pre snap motion and even more aggressive passing attack and I
- 1:06:59can't wait. I can't wait to see it because this offense has been,
- 1:07:02as most folks have dubbed it, just a boring type of offense over the
- 1:07:08past couple of seasons. What kind of differences, Lou, are we gonna
- 1:07:12see from this offense with Kellen Moore than what we've seen over the past couple
- 1:07:15of years here? Yeah, Well, the main one is the one you
- 1:07:17nailed. It's motion. You're gonna see a lot more prestat motion. And
- 1:07:20that's not a high bar to raise because or the beat because last year the
- 1:07:25Eagles were I think dead last in yes, yeah, so they just did
- 1:07:29not use it in their offense. And so I think it's actually gonna be
- 1:07:31a really nice compliment to what Nick Sirianni in this offense has already done with
- 1:07:35a lot of their option plays a RPO. I think when you have prestat
- 1:07:40motion and having DeVante Smith suddenly line up on the slotter Saquon Barkley kick out
- 1:07:45into the slot, or you have two guys in the backfield and now you
- 1:07:47start using some triple option and you get defenses thinking because of that motion,
- 1:07:51that's only going to add to what you do best. So I think the
- 1:07:54marriage between the philosophies are gonna I think it's gonna work. I think some
- 1:07:58other things you'll see the quick passing game, it's going to be a much
- 1:08:00bigger part of the offense than it's been. I think Moore really used that
- 1:08:04a lot with Justin Herbert in LA last year. I think that's gonna really
- 1:08:09help with answering against the Blitz. Steegels were not good in that department last
- 1:08:13year. I don't know. I mean outside of that, like, you're
- 1:08:15gonna see a lot more throwing to the running back. Of course, you
- 1:08:16got Saquon Barkley, you want to get him the ball, yep, and
- 1:08:18play action under center. I just think you're gonna see a lot more optionality.
- 1:08:23It's just not going to be the same thing over and over again,
- 1:08:26and when you have all the weapons, you already do again. Like Jeff,
- 1:08:30as you mentioned, this offense has been vanilla even in twenty twenty two.
- 1:08:32It didn't matter because you were so talented. But why not try to
- 1:08:35make it even easier and harder to defend elite players by making your scheme elite
- 1:08:41too, and make it hard to figure out. So I really hope that
- 1:08:44this pans out this year because there's a lot of potential. Even though the
- 1:08:47play worked almost every time, and I don't have the percentages in front of
- 1:08:50me. Low if I have to see that tight end screen to Dallas Goddard
- 1:08:55again, oh my gosh, it's just it was just a yes, you
- 1:08:59just know it was com Yeah. Honestly, at the end of last year,
- 1:09:01it got to the point where I was feeling we were watching Chip Kelly's
- 1:09:03offense again, where I could predict, sitting on my couch what was going
- 1:09:08on. So, yeah, I don't think that's gonna happen with Kellen Moore.
- 1:09:10You're just gonna see a lot more optionality. You're just gonna be more
- 1:09:13multiple on offense again. Folks talking to Lou Debassi from the Lockedown Eagles Podcast.
- 1:09:18Give him a follow on Twitter slash x if you're not already at dBase
- 1:09:24l Oe. He is a great, great follow. And to close us
- 1:09:28out here, we obviously have to talk about the quarterback position. We got
- 1:09:30to talk about Jalen Hurts, and yes it's OTAs, but one of the
- 1:09:33themes from OTAs here as it pertains to Jalen Hurts is that he's thrown over
- 1:09:39the middle. More good, good news, but he had some challenges with
- 1:09:42that. I'm wondering what again talking about concern levels here? How concerned should
- 1:09:46we be about Jalen Hurts and that adaptability to this new offense. Throwing over
- 1:09:51the middle something he needs to do if this offense is going to succeed.
- 1:09:56What are your thoughts here? Yeah, I think in twenty twenty two,
- 1:09:59jail And proved to me that he has the ability to be that player that
- 1:10:02can utilize the middle of the field and throw with anticipation layer throws. I
- 1:10:08think he can be an elite processor. That's who he was two years ago
- 1:10:12when he almost won the MVP and almost beat Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl.
- 1:10:15Even last year he had a lot of moments like that the first eleven
- 1:10:17weeks of the season, when he was an MVP favorite according to most betting
- 1:10:21sites. So you know, again, like last year, he regressed just
- 1:10:26like everybody on the team. And yeah, he's got yet another new play
- 1:10:29caller, but that's kind of in the story of Jalen Hurts his life as
- 1:10:31a quarterback. So if anybody's gonna be able to adjust, Jeff like,
- 1:10:34I trust, it's gonna be Jalen. I know last year was it was
- 1:10:38a bad finish and I had a sour tase in my mouth about the quarterback.
- 1:10:41I thought, that's when you need him more than any time, right
- 1:10:45he did not step up. Yeah, but yeah, Jalen Hurts, I'm
- 1:10:47not worried about him this year. I think the offense is gonna be perfect
- 1:10:50for him. In this entire offense's skill set with Kellen Moore gonna be fun
- 1:10:55to watch and follow, and it's also gonna be a great great listen over
- 1:10:59at the Lockdown You podcast as well. Folks, I subscribe on Apple Podcasts.
