- 0:15Speaker 3: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:17Speaker 4: I'm looking on the screen on NFL Network now the
- 0:21Speaker 4: coach's photo, which is amazing.
- 0:23Speaker 5: How every year it gets dissected and analyzed.
- 0:26Speaker 3: This is worse than the schedule release.
- 0:28Speaker 5: Yeah, Rabel was front and center with his legs.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Yeah, he's taking a lot of space up man spreading.
- 0:34Speaker 6: Jess came with me on Sunday to the draft party
- 0:37Speaker 6: and she was like, watching you interact with Dante's Barnekio
- 0:40Speaker 6: was something else.
- 0:41Speaker 1: It wasn't as good as when he called Jenny Dell
- 0:43Speaker 1: old to her face though.
- 0:44Speaker 5: That was Yeah, you called her old.
- 0:46Speaker 6: Well, like accidentally she came up to me and introduced herself.
- 0:49Speaker 6: I'd never met her before that you look old, like.
- 0:52Speaker 6: I feel like the auditor probably will be the one
- 0:54Speaker 6: that falls because of the inexperience with that name.
- 0:56Speaker 7: Right off, Like he didn't even think about it, and
- 0:58Speaker 7: they know Vera Tucka.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I'm out on a team. It's not we you are
- 1:04Speaker 3: on this.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I wish get paid by the same people that pay them.
- 1:07Speaker 4: You're on the team, Paul, No, I'm not definitely. Okay,
- 1:12Speaker 4: you're gonna stop catching those checks.
- 1:13Speaker 6: Last week, Barth goes, well, we're gonna do special teams, right,
- 1:16Speaker 6: And I was like, I wasn't planning on it, to
- 1:18Speaker 6: be honest with you. And so tomorrow, well we're doing
- 1:21Speaker 6: special teams.
- 1:21Speaker 5: Do tune in for that.
- 1:22Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:23Speaker 7: This is Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota's official website for
- 1:27Speaker 7: deals buy a Toyota dot com.
- 1:31Speaker 5: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Thursday here
- 1:35Speaker 5: at Jillette Stadium. The gang's all here.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Evan, Paul, Me, Deuce, Alex, Matt and Alex in the
- 1:41Speaker 4: booth talking Patriots, talking whatever on this Thursday, another rainy
- 1:46Speaker 4: Thursday in Foxborough. Are we ever gonna really have like
- 1:49Speaker 4: some consecutive days? We're gonna we can't stack Sundays? You know,
- 1:54Speaker 4: I'd like to stack some Sundays, but we can't do it.
- 1:57Speaker 1: No, you get some yard work building up.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I am have a lot of outdoor work I
- 2:02Speaker 5: need to do.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I gotta do a burn. I'm kind of intimidated.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Oh your first burn?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:06Speaker 9: Yeah, it's been wingering for about different things five years
- 2:13Speaker 9: social media.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Make sure you have your hose near Oh I know.
- 2:16Speaker 8: No.
- 2:16Speaker 9: I talked to the fire the fire guy in town,
- 2:18Speaker 9: and I was like, I'm scared because I did burn
- 2:20Speaker 9: down two acres.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Of forrest as a child. This is a story. Yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 1: what's going on here? I'm a fire bandit No, we
- 2:29Speaker 1: burned down. Well, it's in the woods.
- 2:32Speaker 9: A friend of mine and I we used to go
- 2:33Speaker 9: out in the woods, used to play a little paintball
- 2:35Speaker 9: out there.
- 2:35Speaker 1: We got and hang out. Nothing nefarious, weren't drinking or
- 2:37Speaker 1: anything like that. Promise.
- 2:39Speaker 6: We went out in April vacation. We found this this old.
- 2:41Speaker 9: Log cabin that we kind of fixed up a little bit.
- 2:43Speaker 9: I say log cabin. It's a rectangle of logs. It
- 2:45Speaker 9: was probably a hunting lodge at some point. And you know,
- 2:47Speaker 9: in between Millic and Holliston and middle of April, things
- 2:50Speaker 9: pretty dry. So we had this giant metal canister. We
- 2:53Speaker 9: were you know, had a little fire going, and all
- 2:55Speaker 9: of a sudden, like the back of the cabin caught
- 2:57Speaker 9: and I was like, oh, this isn't good.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And the whole thing like went up and I was like,
- 3:03Speaker 1: oh my god.
- 3:04Speaker 9: So I had my little dirt bike at the time,
- 3:06Speaker 9: this nineteen seventy seven Trail seventy and like my friend
- 3:08Speaker 9: hops on the back, weren't like me, Like I'm like,
- 3:10Speaker 9: you know, I'm like John Connor and Terminator two flying
- 3:12Speaker 9: through the woods like And it was the first time
- 3:14Speaker 9: I ever dropped the F bomb to my mom because
- 3:16Speaker 9: she's like looking up and like what's going on out
- 3:18Speaker 9: in the woods, And I like.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Flipped the motorcycles on.
- 3:21Speaker 9: I'm like, call the heaf and fire department, and so
- 3:24Speaker 9: she's like, well, hold on, hold on, let's let's call dad,
- 3:26Speaker 9: and my.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Dad's over it, Like let's call my Dad's my dad's
- 3:29Speaker 6: in a soccer.
- 3:29Speaker 9: Game with my sisters and he can see the smoke
- 3:31Speaker 9: from across the town. So he comes over, like, we'll
- 3:34Speaker 9: go out there.
- 3:35Speaker 1: We got it.
- 3:35Speaker 9: So we have like a shovel, a hoe, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 9: maybe like a rake, like we had like three random
- 3:41Speaker 9: pieces and we walk out and by this point the
- 3:43Speaker 9: cabin has burned. The fire is spreading out and you'd
- 3:45Speaker 9: go to like try to put it out and it
- 3:47Speaker 9: would just right back up.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So we had to call the fire department.
- 3:50Speaker 9: And there were three I think was Millis Holliston and
- 3:53Speaker 9: maybe one more.
- 3:54Speaker 1: All came out into the woods, and I mean they
- 3:56Speaker 1: loved it. They were all throwing through the woods. We
- 3:58Speaker 1: got to put it all out and stuff.
- 4:00Speaker 6: So I had to go to the fire department get
- 4:02Speaker 6: yelled out a little bit.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So yeah, that's mine, I'm sure.
- 4:05Speaker 5: Wow, So that's another story.
- 4:07Speaker 6: So I'm worried.
- 4:08Speaker 9: So now you can see why I'm concerned that I'm
- 4:10Speaker 9: going to light a fire about fifty feet from my
- 4:12Speaker 9: house and yeah, probably burn it down.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So absolutely I.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Have not at this house, but in my past house
- 4:22Speaker 4: I not. You can't burn leaves up to you can
- 4:25Speaker 4: burn eight in shrubs and branches and stuff. But I
- 4:29Speaker 4: also need to burn some old fencing. Yeah pick it fencing. Yeah,
- 4:33Speaker 4: kind of light it.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Up rather than bring it to that.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Never done that, No, I'm scared.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Am I would pose your house down first?
- 4:40Speaker 5: I know. Yeah. Just make sure you have water nearby.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Yeah, that's why I'll be And then make sure when
- 4:46Speaker 4: you're done that you really soak it.
- 4:49Speaker 9: Oh yeah yeah, well it's kind of next to a swamps.
- 4:51Speaker 9: I think we'll be all right, but I still just
- 4:53Speaker 9: a terrified. What do you burn it fire with logs
- 4:56Speaker 9: and sticks and stuff? That It's been a pile since
- 4:58Speaker 9: we moved in at the previous owner has had and
- 5:00Speaker 9: I've kind of just continued to add to it, and
- 5:02Speaker 9: I'm like, at some point I gotta do it, but
- 5:04Speaker 9: it has to be a very specific set of circumstances.
- 5:07Speaker 9: On the day of that you can get the fire
- 5:08Speaker 9: prim and you know, they let you burn it and
- 5:10Speaker 9: all that stuff.
- 5:11Speaker 5: Sometimes some towns are more strict than others.
- 5:13Speaker 9: But I can't do a well training fret. So that's
- 5:15Speaker 9: what that's where my mind went to immediately my burn.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Yeah, Okay, well there you go. There's your headline for today,
- 5:22Speaker 4: and the show is often running deuce.
- 5:24Speaker 3: I didn't expect that pyromania.
- 5:27Speaker 9: Only you right, don't go smoke, don't yeah, especially in April,
- 5:33Speaker 9: very dry, be careful.
- 5:34Speaker 1: All right, So what do we got anything? Anything new?
- 5:37Speaker 4: You know, the owner's meetings are done. Everyone's back from that.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Things are kind of quiet, right.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:44Speaker 9: I saw a little thing I thought was interesting, Adam
- 5:46Speaker 9: Schefter reporting that that the way they came up with
- 5:49Speaker 9: the two teams is that everybody keeps going, oh, we'll
- 5:51Speaker 9: do it next year for hard knocks, and that the
- 5:52Speaker 9: Patriots like, we'll do it next year. And they're like, Okay,
- 5:55Speaker 9: you're in next year, and they just kind of backed
- 5:56Speaker 9: them into it.
- 5:57Speaker 1: That was what Adam Schefter was reporting. So yeah, and
- 5:59Speaker 1: I think.
- 6:00Speaker 4: That probably now that ESPN is part of the NFL network,
- 6:06Speaker 4: they've merged that ESPN probably put fresh on. We want
- 6:09Speaker 4: a little commitment going forward, you know, like every year.
- 6:13Speaker 4: We don't want to have to be twisting arms.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 9: So yeah, I mean the article I read, they also
- 6:18Speaker 9: just talked about the Buffalo bills. One went out with
- 6:21Speaker 9: a whimper last year and everybody said it was just
- 6:24Speaker 9: completely vanilla fluff, and Schefter saying I think they're hoping
- 6:28Speaker 9: that maybe they can.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Revive it a little bit.
- 6:30Speaker 9: How would you revive Like, you got to give real access,
- 6:32Speaker 9: You got to show real stuff that's going to move
- 6:35Speaker 9: the needle in.
- 6:36Speaker 4: What's your three point plan of reviving hard knots?
- 6:40Speaker 9: All right, show guys getting cut, No more about the
- 6:43Speaker 9: families at home trying to like make do during the
- 6:45Speaker 9: summer without that.
- 6:46Speaker 1: We get it, we know it's hard, but you know,
- 6:48Speaker 1: let's stay on.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Foot our husband who's making tens of million.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I like they're going to war sometimes.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah, right, don't get me wrong.
- 6:55Speaker 6: It's like it. You know, the families at home get
- 6:59Speaker 6: neglected for a little it but in their mansions. So
- 7:02Speaker 6: I think you got to show hard conversations.
- 7:05Speaker 9: You got to show them trashing a player, like maybe
- 7:08Speaker 9: you don't know who it is, or you know, you
- 7:10Speaker 9: have to the real conversations that happen behind the scenes
- 7:13Speaker 9: that we all know. They go home after the training
- 7:15Speaker 9: camp practices, the coaches sit around a table and everybody
- 7:18Speaker 9: goes around and says, this is how my position group
- 7:20Speaker 9: is doing. I want to hear some good but I
- 7:23Speaker 9: want to hear some bad too. I want to hear
- 7:24Speaker 9: you know, maybe you can't get specific, but that's the
- 7:27Speaker 9: stuff that's real that they haven't shown you anymore.
- 7:30Speaker 4: How do you do that without, you know, either offending
- 7:33Speaker 4: existing players or giving up state secrets.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Yeah, they got to show players getting cut. I know
- 7:39Speaker 6: that stinks, and I know, but that's the business. And
- 7:42Speaker 6: those are the most like raw moments of the old
- 7:47Speaker 6: versions of Hard Knocks or unfortunately players coming in and
- 7:51Speaker 6: finding out the news. And it stanks for the players
- 7:54Speaker 6: and it's probably a little embarrassing, but that if you
- 7:58Speaker 6: want it to be good in compelling television, you build
- 8:00Speaker 6: up the fringe roster guys throughout the season of the
- 8:04Speaker 6: show and then you find out at the end whether
- 8:06Speaker 6: they made it or not, and that that was that
- 8:09Speaker 6: was sort of the tension that would build with it.
- 8:12Speaker 6: I think the other thing that, you know, I always
- 8:14Speaker 6: think that the best one ever was the Jets with
- 8:16Speaker 6: Rex Ryan, and so the personality of the Yeah, the
- 8:21Speaker 6: personality of the coach matters, and so picking Rabel is
- 8:26Speaker 6: a pretty good one, you know. I think that that
- 8:29Speaker 6: you know, he has that kind of personality that that
- 8:31Speaker 6: year with the Jets. Darrell Reeves was in a contract
- 8:35Speaker 6: holdout as well, so that was like a big theme.
- 8:39Speaker 6: So just like things like that that I think are if.
- 8:42Speaker 4: I was Films and Slash ESPN, my thing would be,
- 8:46Speaker 4: you will have final approval, but we have to film
- 8:50Speaker 4: everything everything, and then we're going to go through it
- 8:54Speaker 4: and you're gonna final You'll get the final approval.
- 8:57Speaker 5: We have to have access to everything.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Yeah, and do they not know now there's some rooms,
- 9:04Speaker 4: there's some meetings and rooms that they don't I.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Was always under the impression that they did film everything.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I don't think that.
- 9:09Speaker 3: They just have to like everything gets cut.
- 9:12Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Well it's there's plenty of great stories
- 9:16Speaker 9: and drama going on behind the scene, and I think
- 9:19Speaker 9: you all the amount of access we've gotten over the years,
- 9:21Speaker 9: you're aware of the drama and the interesting conversations that
- 9:24Speaker 9: are happening, and when they're not shown and you're spending
- 9:27Speaker 9: more time on you know, the kid at home and
- 9:30Speaker 9: the wife trying to you know, it's it's repetitive.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Want the owner football.
- 9:34Speaker 4: I want owner, I want GM, I want coaches, players obviously,
- 9:39Speaker 4: but I want everybody.
- 9:40Speaker 7: I just think it's circumstantial. I think there's some years
- 9:43Speaker 7: where the same team, same people can be far more
- 9:46Speaker 7: compelling than others. YEA stories develop, you know, the Gerard
- 9:50Speaker 7: Meo year, I think would have been a fascinating hard
- 9:53Speaker 7: Knocks with the whole Matthew.
- 9:55Speaker 10: Jud and him on the side of the field at
- 9:57Speaker 10: training camp, clearly super animated, like yeah, you got to
- 10:00Speaker 10: play up the drama.
- 10:01Speaker 2: That's what people are too.
- 10:01Speaker 3: No, Like, that's to me ready made for a television.
- 10:06Speaker 9: Taking over for Bill Belichick, you know, like the drama
- 10:09Speaker 9: of that, and then this hard decision said I'd have
- 10:11Speaker 9: been made establishing your own program, Like there's a lot
- 10:13Speaker 9: of story there.
- 10:13Speaker 7: I do agree with f though the personality of the
- 10:16Speaker 7: coach matters, and I think Rabel will be better than
- 10:18Speaker 7: most yea.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:20Speaker 6: And the people on the coaching staff, like the one
- 10:23Speaker 6: they did with the Browns, I think it was early on.
- 10:27Speaker 6: I think it was to fan. It might have been
- 10:29Speaker 6: Hugh Jackson. Jackson and the offensive line coach became.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Every time he had his stomach yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 6: You know, and then he did like that He's talking
- 10:39Speaker 6: about the the way that they stretch and he was like,
- 10:42Speaker 6: you know, we fought two World Wars on push ups,
- 10:45Speaker 6: sit ups and jumping Jackson, what are these?
- 10:47Speaker 3: Like, what are you doing?
- 10:49Speaker 6: And like, you know, like those are the people that
- 10:51Speaker 6: like the characters.
- 10:52Speaker 9: Yeah, and the Lions one I remember Aaron Glenn and
- 10:56Speaker 9: was it d Daley?
- 10:57Speaker 6: Was that the running back coach and they were we
- 11:00Speaker 6: hated each other each other, repetitive.
- 11:02Speaker 9: But you know there there are certainly moments that have
- 11:05Speaker 9: stood out over the years. But I think to create
- 11:07Speaker 9: and you know, to get back to what it is like,
- 11:10Speaker 9: take us inside the football stuff, show us the hard conversations.
- 11:12Speaker 1: You know.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Yeah, well we'll see how Seattle work works out.
- 11:17Speaker 6: And we just fixed that for you.
- 11:19Speaker 5: You're welcome.
- 11:19Speaker 9: Yeah, probably, I mean it's gotta be the first time
- 11:21Speaker 9: a Super Bowl champion has ever been on it, I
- 11:23Speaker 9: mean coming off probably, yeah, because a playoff one. So
- 11:27Speaker 9: I think that there's some interest in that. How do
- 11:29Speaker 9: you you know? For me, I love the coaches stuff,
- 11:31Speaker 9: But how does Mike McDonald frame things and how does he,
- 11:34Speaker 9: you know, get his team ready to go after winning
- 11:37Speaker 9: the Super Bowl. It's not an easy thing to do
- 11:38Speaker 9: keep guys motivated.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Yep, all right, So there's that anything else, Just wrap.
- 11:45Speaker 8: It up, all right.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I'm just looking at Kirk Cousins on NFL Network.
- 11:50Speaker 7: The absolute m VP of the business of football is
- 11:53Speaker 7: everybody tweets every time he signs the contract or change
- 11:56Speaker 7: his teams. Do you realize he's made these You're going
- 12:00Speaker 7: to be the second highest paid guy of all time.
- 12:03Speaker 7: He's going to pass Brady with this contract? Much respect,
- 12:06Speaker 7: how many good much?
- 12:08Speaker 1: How many played?
- 12:10Speaker 11: He?
- 12:10Speaker 7: Yeah, he's been a decent player, but he shouldn't be
- 12:13Speaker 7: anywhere near the conversation of highest Well, for a while.
- 12:16Speaker 5: He was living off those franchise tags, right.
- 12:19Speaker 7: Yeah, that's how it started, right, Yeah, that's how he
- 12:21Speaker 7: started making the big bucks.
- 12:22Speaker 10: Absolutely, he's also, isn't he super frugal, like he drives
- 12:25Speaker 10: a minivan and in the off season.
- 12:28Speaker 6: In laws and he just puts his pants on.
- 12:32Speaker 10: I just love the idea of like him and Fernando
- 12:34Speaker 10: Mendoza to total choir boys in Sin City, Like just
- 12:39Speaker 10: the juxtaposition, and that's really funny to me.
- 12:41Speaker 6: I just don't a good point entirely know from a
- 12:44Speaker 6: football standpoint what the Raiders are doing exactly, but I
- 12:48Speaker 6: do agree with Alex that personality wise, it feels like
- 12:51Speaker 6: a fit. But like Mendoza is as polished of a
- 12:56Speaker 6: quarterback prospect as you can get, so like he's not sitting.
- 13:00Speaker 6: They're not gonna They're not gonna do that thing.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Whe's to Kobe Brissett.
- 13:05Speaker 6: There's no way, there's no way that that Kirk Cousins
- 13:09Speaker 6: is better in camp than Fannana Mendoza. There's no chance, zero, really,
- 13:14Speaker 6: zero point zero.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Why do you say that?
- 13:16Speaker 6: Because kirk Cousins is just not the same guy he
- 13:18Speaker 6: has been in Mendoza are good. I mean, you're talking
- 13:21Speaker 6: like I I just I don't see the point of
- 13:24Speaker 6: this if I'm the Raiders, other than if you think
- 13:26Speaker 6: that kirk Cousins is going to be some great mentor
- 13:29Speaker 6: to Fernanda Mendoza, which maybe he might be the Maybe
- 13:32Speaker 6: they might be kindred spirits, they might get along great,
- 13:35Speaker 6: they might have a good relationship, all that stuff, But
- 13:39Speaker 6: football wise, I don't really get it.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Is Mendoza healthy right now? He didn't finish the season
- 13:45Speaker 4: with something that was going.
- 13:46Speaker 6: On and play championship national championship.
- 13:48Speaker 5: I know, I know, but he wasn't playing through anything.
- 13:51Speaker 7: No, Okay, is there not a possibility that the Raiders
- 13:56Speaker 7: just get him in camp and they just think he's
- 13:59Speaker 7: just not ready yet?
- 14:00Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 14:00Speaker 7: Is that not like a possibility? So instead of starting
- 14:04Speaker 7: a guy who you don't think is ready, you maybe
- 14:07Speaker 7: give him a few, you know, a few extra weeks.
- 14:10Speaker 7: I mean, we all know he's going to be the
- 14:12Speaker 7: starting quarterback this year. Yeah, he's not going to sit
- 14:15Speaker 7: for a whole year. But is it not possible that
- 14:18Speaker 7: they don't feel like he's ready and anything is possible.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And he comes in as a willing partner, then why not?
- 14:24Speaker 12: Right?
- 14:25Speaker 6: Well, but he wasn't a very willing partner for no
- 14:27Speaker 6: I know, but that was.
- 14:28Speaker 7: A completely different situation. They signed him to be the starter,
- 14:32Speaker 7: and then two months later they drafted the guy that
- 14:35Speaker 7: they wanted to replace.
- 14:36Speaker 6: Him with I understand, but he's now going to be
- 14:39Speaker 6: signed to a twenty million dollar contract for one year.
- 14:43Speaker 7: Yeah, not really if you read the stuff, but give
- 14:46Speaker 7: me that's exactly one point three million salary.
- 14:50Speaker 6: Yeah, because there's because there's offset money with Atlanta.
- 14:53Speaker 7: Right, So the Raiders got basically a guy for eleven
- 14:57Speaker 7: point three million to be a veteran backup.
- 14:59Speaker 3: And if they need him to play, he can play.
- 15:02Speaker 3: They're not going to go long term with him.
- 15:03Speaker 7: Maybe maybe he plays two games, you know, just to
- 15:06Speaker 7: give him a little time.
- 15:08Speaker 5: His cousins is okay with it.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Why not?
- 15:09Speaker 7: And again, the difference between Atlanta and this is he
- 15:12Speaker 7: goes in with his eyes wide open.
- 15:13Speaker 3: I'm here to help this.
- 15:15Speaker 5: Kid, right.
- 15:15Speaker 3: He didn't do that in Atlanta, right, I'm going to
- 15:18Speaker 3: Atlanta to help Michael Pennick.
- 15:19Speaker 5: That wasn't the circumstances. This is different. Like you said,
- 15:22Speaker 5: he knows what's going on. They're gonna draft this guy first,
- 15:25Speaker 5: he's gonna play.
- 15:26Speaker 7: Now he can't play anymore. I agree with Evan on
- 15:28Speaker 7: that he's a five hundred guy. I mean, if he plays,
- 15:31Speaker 7: he's gonna go five hundred.
- 15:32Speaker 3: That's basically what he's done the last three years.
- 15:34Speaker 6: It's just been a very odd offseason for the Raiders.
- 15:37Speaker 3: All the way down to lot of strange stuff Max.
- 15:40Speaker 6: Crosby trade, following through some of the free agents' money
- 15:43Speaker 6: that they spending spree that they went on. Mendoza reportedly
- 15:48Speaker 6: is already learning the playbook and already has the playbook,
- 15:50Speaker 6: and like it's not this is a shore fire thing.
- 15:53Speaker 6: And like Kirk Cousins is a is a backup quarterback
- 15:57Speaker 6: even at this stage, that has some name wreckor and
- 16:00Speaker 6: has some cachet, that's not you're not signing, you know,
- 16:03Speaker 6: a guy that's never had any success in the league,
- 16:06Speaker 6: Like this is a I wouldn't.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Look at the signing of Cousins as incompetence. I would
- 16:12Speaker 4: look at it.
- 16:12Speaker 3: I just don't know how.
- 16:15Speaker 6: I'm not saying it's incompetent. I'm saying that, but what
- 16:18Speaker 6: are we doing here?
- 16:19Speaker 5: Like you know, like if they don't know what they're doing,
- 16:22Speaker 5: they're incompetent.
- 16:22Speaker 7: So you know, who else wanted them for the same
- 16:24Speaker 7: thing is the Rams. It's a team that's pretty competent,
- 16:29Speaker 7: right right. They wanted them for the same reason.
- 16:31Speaker 6: I think the Rams is a different situation. The Rams
- 16:34Speaker 6: are looking at it like, if Stafford were to get hurt, potentially,
- 16:37Speaker 6: then our season wouldn't go up in flames. If we
- 16:40Speaker 6: had to turn to Kirk.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Guy ready, then at least maybe we can get off
- 16:45Speaker 5: five hundred for when he's ready.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I don't know, I like, all right, whatever.
- 16:49Speaker 3: I don't think. Yeah, I mean the Raiders are obviously
- 16:51Speaker 3: in major rebuilding mode.
- 16:52Speaker 4: But more importantly, their minority owner was at the Celtics
- 16:55Speaker 4: game last night in Miami.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Right which.
- 17:00Speaker 7: In whatever Guy mis Patrick, he was, Oh, I forgot
- 17:06Speaker 7: they were in Miami.
- 17:07Speaker 6: I wonder who he was rooting for.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Yeah, just a family.
- 17:10Speaker 2: He's a Miami resident.
- 17:11Speaker 3: So NBA action last night with his son, My god.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Talk about a lack of efforts.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Yeah, Celtics scored one hundred and forty points. That you
- 17:21Speaker 5: gave up one hundred and fifty.
- 17:24Speaker 3: They didn't even get in the way.
- 17:25Speaker 5: They had fifty three points in the first quarter.
- 17:29Speaker 3: What effort right there?
- 17:31Speaker 6: Heat they got it down to like, but Celtics.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Were hitting everything. It was unbelievable. Speaking of quarterbacks that
- 17:40Speaker 5: aren't on the Patriots, Jalen Hurts in the Eagles, that
- 17:44Speaker 5: situation is getting a little Harry.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Continues to be smoked from that whole situation, which.
- 17:49Speaker 6: Didn't really care for that either.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yeah, like, just it sounds what do you mean.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Why do you think the Patriots are going to acquire
- 17:56Speaker 3: a J.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Brown?
- 17:57Speaker 3: Because that's why he's been.
- 18:00Speaker 10: On Well that was always that was always my like
- 18:03Speaker 10: red flag with a J.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Brown?
- 18:04Speaker 10: Like, why do you want to leave the Eagles? Seems
- 18:06Speaker 10: like a good situation. Oh okay, maybe now I get it.
- 18:09Speaker 9: It seems temperamental, But I so who's the problem, hurts
- 18:12Speaker 9: are Brown?
- 18:14Speaker 6: It depends to you as Nick Sirianni and the Eagles, Like,
- 18:17Speaker 6: I just feel like it's very odd to throw your
- 18:21Speaker 6: star quarterback under the bus like that art if that's the.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Case, because yeah, the rumors are that this is emanating
- 18:26Speaker 4: from the Eagles.
- 18:28Speaker 6: I mean it says all over the article that it's
- 18:30Speaker 6: team sources people within the building and philto.
- 18:33Speaker 10: The detail of that opening the opening couple paragraphs of
- 18:37Speaker 10: that story, like how many people could that have been
- 18:39Speaker 10: leaking this to Jeremy Fowler.
- 18:42Speaker 6: It just it's not It's an odd move. And I
- 18:44Speaker 6: think that Jalen hurts there. They think that he needs
- 18:47Speaker 6: a kick in the ass to try to diversify and
- 18:50Speaker 6: go outside his compt zone. And they might be right,
- 18:53Speaker 6: but to like leak it all to Jeremy Fowler like
- 18:56Speaker 6: that and have his whole expos published basically taking down
- 19:00Speaker 6: your star quarterback that just won you a Super Bowl
- 19:02Speaker 6: two years ago.
- 19:03Speaker 9: Has there been a more precipitous decline from a Super
- 19:06Speaker 9: Bowl champion to like this point right now where you're
- 19:09Speaker 9: kind of pointing at him and saying he's a problem
- 19:11Speaker 9: for us.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I mean two years ago, at this point he was
- 19:14Speaker 1: kind of a darling.
- 19:14Speaker 9: I mean, I didn't go back to that flag football
- 19:16Speaker 9: thing where Brady's playing. Then all of a sudden, Jalen
- 19:18Speaker 9: Hurts is out there, like and there's Jalen Hurts like this.
- 19:21Speaker 5: I just want to, like they say, NFL not for long.
- 19:24Speaker 6: Yeah, he played well in both Super Bowls, Like they
- 19:26Speaker 6: didn't win the first one, but he played really well
- 19:29Speaker 6: in that game. And I don't know the end, not
- 19:34Speaker 6: how I would handle it, Like why played?
- 19:36Speaker 8: No?
- 19:37Speaker 1: You need this guy?
- 19:37Speaker 9: I mean, you know, are you gonna you risking completely
- 19:40Speaker 9: alienating alienating him?
- 19:41Speaker 1: This has been something that's been going on for how
- 19:44Speaker 1: long now?
- 19:44Speaker 9: I mean how long? I mean this whole past season.
- 19:46Speaker 9: It felt like they were fingers being pointed at him,
- 19:48Speaker 9: and even into the year before right like they were
- 19:50Speaker 9: kind of at a crossroads.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Like Jalen Hurt's kind of on that sy I don't
- 19:53Speaker 3: like Jalen Hurt.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, is he kind of.
- 19:55Speaker 5: A quiet, stubborn guy.
- 19:58Speaker 9: I mean that's the impression the article would give you, Yeah,
- 20:01Speaker 9: about quiet, But he's I.
- 20:02Speaker 6: Think as a thrower he's limited, and I think there's
- 20:05Speaker 6: there's As a passer, there's only certain things that he
- 20:09Speaker 6: feels comfortable doing. You know, like historically, he's not somebody
- 20:12Speaker 6: that likes to throw the ball to the middle of
- 20:14Speaker 6: the field, especially the intermediate middle, and so teams just
- 20:17Speaker 6: know their offense is just we're gonna throw go balls
- 20:21Speaker 6: on the outside to AJ Brown and DeVante Smith and
- 20:23Speaker 6: that's sort of their They're the majority of their passing plays.
- 20:28Speaker 6: And so when you start to get tape out there
- 20:31Speaker 6: and these defensive coordinators sink their teeth into it. He's
- 20:34Speaker 6: just been a little bit slow to adapt to some
- 20:38Speaker 6: of the things that the league has adapted to him.
- 20:40Speaker 6: And I would also say his his rushing for whatever reason,
- 20:44Speaker 6: has declined and he's not the runner that he was
- 20:47Speaker 6: when he came out of college and early on in
- 20:50Speaker 6: his Eagles career, So I think that that all plays
- 20:53Speaker 6: the factor in it. But these stories come out, you know,
- 20:55Speaker 6: the same thing happened last offseason with Caleb Williams, and
- 21:00Speaker 6: there was a takedown piece about Caleb Williams and his
- 21:04Speaker 6: rookie season with the Bears, and then Caleb Williams takes
- 21:07Speaker 6: the Bears to the playoffs and wins a playoff game
- 21:09Speaker 6: with a competent head coach the next year. So it
- 21:13Speaker 6: just maybe it works, like maybe that was motivation for
- 21:15Speaker 6: Caleb Williams. Maybe they they hit the right buttons and
- 21:19Speaker 6: struck the right chords. But it's just a weird thing
- 21:22Speaker 6: to do.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 4: The league released some rule changes or suggestions the other day.
- 21:31Speaker 4: One of them is on side kick. Now you can
- 21:34Speaker 4: ask to do that at any time during the game.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Now, yeah, what did I missed?
- 21:39Speaker 3: But before, what was it before? You could only do
- 21:40Speaker 3: it in the fourth quarters.
- 21:43Speaker 7: Yeah, Okay, it's kind of irrelevant because you can't do
- 21:46Speaker 7: it in the first quarter. In surprise anybody. You have
- 21:48Speaker 7: to declare I'm doing an onside kick, So it's completely irrelevant.
- 21:52Speaker 5: I know.
- 21:53Speaker 6: There's no more same Super Bowl rise on sidekick.
- 21:56Speaker 5: Right, that was one of them. What else? What else
- 22:00Speaker 5: are they talking about?
- 22:01Speaker 6: They're gonna have like, uh, well, this one I thought
- 22:04Speaker 6: was weird. If they have a referee hold out and
- 22:09Speaker 6: they have to use replacement referees, they're going to allow
- 22:12Speaker 6: the situation room to correct clear and obvious fouls. I'm
- 22:16Speaker 6: not so sure why it matters whether they're they're they're
- 22:19Speaker 6: the full time refs or they're the replacement refs. Right,
- 22:21Speaker 6: shouldn't we just do that? Anyways?
- 22:23Speaker 1: They don't.
- 22:25Speaker 3: They know they.
- 22:26Speaker 6: Eye in the sky will sometimes nap down and say, hey,
- 22:28Speaker 6: let's move the butt.
- 22:29Speaker 7: I think they're going to involved I guess didn't they
- 22:32Speaker 7: do like penalties too?
- 22:36Speaker 6: Yeah, this is like what a lot of people have
- 22:39Speaker 6: been pushing for.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Clear and obvious fouls. Yeah, clear and obvious they did.
- 22:44Speaker 7: It used to be like that, Yeah, they could do
- 22:46Speaker 7: like no, no, no, no, you guys called that a catch.
- 22:48Speaker 3: He clearly didn't catch it, just overturn it. So holding
- 22:51Speaker 3: I think they said fouls, Okay, it says.
- 22:55Speaker 9: Clear and obvious as Paul quote, including fouls for roughing
- 22:57Speaker 9: the past or intentional grounding or just qualification past like that.
- 23:00Speaker 9: What else you got just qualification consultation. League personnel in
- 23:06Speaker 9: New York can now consult with on field officials regarding
- 23:08Speaker 9: player rejections, receiving team alignment, modification of the kickoff alignment
- 23:12Speaker 9: requirements in the setup zone to increase returns. So they're
- 23:15Speaker 9: continuing to try to grow, say what it.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Is not here? No, but I've seen that a couple
- 23:22Speaker 1: different times. I'm not sure exactly what it is.
- 23:24Speaker 7: Less you we got nothing in terms of you know,
- 23:28Speaker 7: dramatic changes, no rule changes.
- 23:31Speaker 6: Or earlier practice for PEP players.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Well, they did.
- 23:34Speaker 4: They they're going to fix that one where if you
- 23:37Speaker 4: end up kicking from the fifty. Yeah, they're going to
- 23:41Speaker 4: fix that so that you don't get incentive to kick
- 23:43Speaker 4: it out of balance.
- 23:44Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, yeah, there's talks of that. The pup thing,
- 23:47Speaker 6: I guess is just relevant to know when that time
- 23:51Speaker 6: comes of that time of year with the pup guys.
- 23:54Speaker 6: I think it's two weeks now, right that it's it
- 23:57Speaker 6: used to be four, Now it's two that you can
- 24:01Speaker 6: activate guys off pup.
- 24:02Speaker 7: Right, Well, I think you can practice practice. I thought
- 24:05Speaker 7: it was your good stuff and practice.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Practice after this team's second regular season game.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Okay, so you can kind of it, so it's kind
- 24:11Speaker 3: of another nothing.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:13Speaker 6: I thought it was that they were looking to allow
- 24:14Speaker 6: them to come back. Okay, so then it really doesn't matter.
- 24:17Speaker 6: But there was a proposal by the Browns to extend
- 24:24Speaker 6: how far out you could trade draft picks, and that
- 24:28Speaker 6: I guess fell flat.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Well they tried, they took it away. Yeah, because they
- 24:31Speaker 3: didn't do it.
- 24:31Speaker 6: There wasn't enough traction for it, I assuming, so not
- 24:35Speaker 6: a not a whole lot.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Okay, all right, well eight five five pasts five hundred
- 24:41Speaker 4: is the Hotline podcast at Patriots dot com. Is the
- 24:43Speaker 4: email address. Let's get right into it. We'll start with
- 24:49Speaker 4: Herm in d C.
- 24:50Speaker 5: What's up, Herming?
- 24:54Speaker 13: Hey, I think i'll listen to when you got the
- 24:59Speaker 13: break down yesterday and you guys are doing tight ends
- 25:03Speaker 13: what next week?
- 25:05Speaker 14: Uh?
- 25:05Speaker 13: Yep, Okay, I'm definitely looking forward to that because, uh,
- 25:10Speaker 13: I know you specifically dudes, you really love I'll see
- 25:14Speaker 13: Kenya Sadik, right. But for me, I feel like, and
- 25:20Speaker 13: I'm trying to look this up yesterday, I don't remember
- 25:22Speaker 13: a tighter the stars being you know, I guess like
- 25:27Speaker 13: a superstar maybe maybe Shannon Shark who's out around, maybe
- 25:30Speaker 13: like the six two range. So I guess my question
- 25:34Speaker 13: is this, what is the case against uh Sam Rouse?
- 25:39Speaker 12: Right?
- 25:39Speaker 13: I mean the guys, I mean what six six? I'm
- 25:42Speaker 13: a you know, basket player myself, so maybe I've gractate
- 25:45Speaker 13: for like bigger guys, I mean him, And what is
- 25:48Speaker 13: this don Younger since like the same side, the one
- 25:51Speaker 13: place also going to play defense, right, so six six?
- 25:55Speaker 13: Uh what twitter six pounds? Relativeally? You know, little drop right,
- 26:00Speaker 13: I think seven drops and hedy targets last year, great
- 26:06Speaker 13: football family, Right, So I guess my over question is
- 26:11Speaker 13: what will be the case against picking Sam Rows? They
- 26:16Speaker 13: take a third route?
- 26:18Speaker 5: Okay, thanks?
- 26:20Speaker 9: I mean just developmentally, he's gonna be moves the needle
- 26:24Speaker 9: in the passing game.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I think he's got blocking and he's yeah.
- 26:28Speaker 6: I mean like there's no like he said, what's the
- 26:30Speaker 6: case against him? I don't mean to make a case
- 26:31Speaker 6: against him. Like if they drafted him in the third round,
- 26:33Speaker 6: I'd feel pretty good about that pick. So I'm not
- 26:36Speaker 6: saying that he's not a good player, good prospect, but
- 26:40Speaker 6: at two sixty five, he's a little clunky. The way
- 26:42Speaker 6: he moves at the top of the route. You know,
- 26:44Speaker 6: he's not a big time separator, I would say through
- 26:47Speaker 6: the top of the route because of that, uh, you know,
- 26:49Speaker 6: does some things at the top of the route technique wise,
- 26:51Speaker 6: it's going to have to be coached up. Uh. And
- 26:53Speaker 6: then the biggest thing I would say is his arm
- 26:55Speaker 6: length and his wingspan are historical aulliers, like historically bad
- 27:00Speaker 6: in terms of short arms, short wingspan. So you know,
- 27:04Speaker 6: we're doing that whole thing again, but we all already
- 27:07Speaker 6: kind of know what that means as a blocker, right
- 27:09Speaker 6: in terms of his arm length and the stuff that
- 27:11Speaker 6: we talk about with arm lanes that tackle it tight
- 27:14Speaker 6: ends right next to the tackle, so it's all the
- 27:16Speaker 6: same kind of stuff. And then I would say the
- 27:18Speaker 6: arm length and the wingspan also contributes to his catch radius.
- 27:22Speaker 6: And you know how big of a net he can
- 27:24Speaker 6: cast in terms of catching the football, especially over the
- 27:27Speaker 6: middle of the field. So he has like this like
- 27:30Speaker 6: sod Off frame where he's you know, got these short arms,
- 27:33Speaker 6: and so he's not one of these like you know,
- 27:35Speaker 6: Antonio Gates a basketball players that can just go up
- 27:38Speaker 6: and catch things over his head, especially in the red
- 27:41Speaker 6: zone and over the middle of the field. So there's
- 27:43Speaker 6: some limitations with him in terms of his body type
- 27:46Speaker 6: as well. But he's not a bad player or bad
- 27:48Speaker 6: prospect by any means. But that's why he's not talked
- 27:51Speaker 6: about as like a first round guy. And he's gonna
- 27:53Speaker 6: probably go somewhere in the middle of the draft.
- 27:55Speaker 4: All right, sounds good? Tight ends next week, can't wait. Yep,
- 27:59Speaker 4: that's in New Hampshire. What's up, Zach?
- 28:03Speaker 12: Hey, guys, thanks taking my call. I was just wondering,
- 28:06Speaker 12: what are your thoughts on Caden Proctor as a Patriot?
- 28:09Speaker 12: Obviously he's probably gonna go a little too high, but
- 28:11Speaker 12: you know, if he fell or if they traded up
- 28:13Speaker 12: for him, what do you think he'd be as a rookie?
- 28:15Speaker 12: And you know, could he beat out Moses or be
- 28:18Speaker 12: a good insurance policy behind him and behind Vera Tucker too.
- 28:23Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, really highly touted player, just you know
- 28:28Speaker 6: Alabama five star recruit, that type of guy. You know,
- 28:31Speaker 6: big dude, physical road grader, but you know he's raw,
- 28:36Speaker 6: especially in past protection. He's got some bad whiffs on
- 28:38Speaker 6: tape and pass protection. And you know, I don't know
- 28:42Speaker 6: where exactly he's going to go. You know, there's some
- 28:45Speaker 6: people that think he's a top twenty player in this draft.
- 28:47Speaker 6: There's some people that aren't as high on him. So
- 28:50Speaker 6: all it takes is one team to fall in love
- 28:52Speaker 6: with the measurables, the size, the power that he plays with,
- 28:56Speaker 6: and all those things should translate. So he's he's you know,
- 29:00Speaker 6: chiseled for the position. He's huge, he's got all the
- 29:03Speaker 6: requisite length and size and power and all that stuff.
- 29:07Speaker 6: But I think the pass protection tape is a little
- 29:10Speaker 6: bit wonky, and that's why he's not considered like a
- 29:13Speaker 6: top ten talent. He kind of like never lived up
- 29:16Speaker 6: to it at Alabama. Like he he came to Alabama, obviously,
- 29:20Speaker 6: big time program, big time tackle. He does these things
- 29:25Speaker 6: where like they'll like flex him out wide and throw
- 29:27Speaker 6: him past it, like like that's the type of athlete
- 29:30Speaker 6: we're talking about here. But he never he kind of
- 29:33Speaker 6: didn't like hit that next level. He didn't you know,
- 29:37Speaker 6: develop into that next level type of player that they
- 29:40Speaker 6: were hoping. They kind of thought he was going to be,
- 29:43Speaker 6: you know, the next big thing there and it kind
- 29:45Speaker 6: of fizzled out a little bit.
- 29:46Speaker 4: All right, Well, thanks Zach, thanks for the call. Chris
- 29:51Speaker 4: from Naugatuck, Connecticut, Right sin, he says, I just want
- 29:55Speaker 4: to say that Fred looked like Wimp Sanderson on Tuesday Show.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Does anyone remember that guy.
- 30:00Speaker 7: Paul, former Alabama men's basketball coach, the plaid palace? Do
- 30:06Speaker 7: you have a plaid something on? I don't know know
- 30:08Speaker 7: I had a I don't remember what you were wearing.
- 30:11Speaker 5: I kind of I had like a shirt, got some power?
- 30:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, black guy? Uh wimp? Tough name.
- 30:18Speaker 7: Wim Sanderson Sanders long time Alabama head coach basketball not football.
- 30:26Speaker 3: So okay, Mike is like, is that a sport?
- 30:30Speaker 5: So I look like websands?
- 30:31Speaker 1: Oh all right, that's old. But we're doing the offensive
- 30:33Speaker 1: line today as as Evan jumped in on Proctor.
- 30:36Speaker 6: So that's our position review. We talk about the most
- 30:40Speaker 6: important position.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I thought it was receiver.
- 30:45Speaker 3: See I don't want the title with a bunch of Jags.
- 30:49Speaker 5: Dustin writes, and listening to the show Tuesday and then
- 30:51Speaker 5: listening to Catch twenty two has me in a spiral
- 30:54Speaker 5: when it comes to mock drafts. But honestly, I hope
- 30:57Speaker 5: they get a wide receiver with pick thirty one and
- 31:00Speaker 5: then go for edge in the second round since the
- 31:02Speaker 5: draft is deep with edge talent. Also, can we please
- 31:05Speaker 5: get in a person one uh one on one podcast
- 31:09Speaker 5: of Evan and Eldridge talking wide receivers. I think it'd
- 31:13Speaker 5: be great entertainment.
- 31:14Speaker 6: We actually see Eye a lot on wide receivers most
- 31:17Speaker 6: of the time. He calls in and I'm like, no,
- 31:19Speaker 6: it was very I like you. I like that guy too,
- 31:22Speaker 6: Like we're good. Uh yeah, what was he saying before
- 31:26Speaker 6: the wide receiver thing? I I I published my rankings today,
- 31:30Speaker 6: so you can go check out those. But you know,
- 31:32Speaker 6: there's those four guys are very enticing at thirty one, Boston,
- 31:36Speaker 6: Concepsio and Cooper Junior. You know those guys. Uh you know,
- 31:39Speaker 6: I'm a Brasle guy. That be the fourth one. But
- 31:43Speaker 6: if they drafted one of those guys at thirty one,
- 31:45Speaker 6: I wouldn't be surprised.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Something something just crashed falling down.
- 31:48Speaker 10: You and Eldrid doing a show, be like busting with
- 31:51Speaker 10: the boys up in the truck, like in the front
- 31:53Speaker 10: of Eldred's brig.
- 31:55Speaker 6: Or maybe in the back. We could like set up
- 31:57Speaker 6: some film back there.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Yeah, then you know we could use the horn for transitions.
- 32:00Speaker 1: You know, we'll incorporate the whole thing.
- 32:03Speaker 9: Like film trucking, trucking in film, something like that. Some
- 32:09Speaker 9: arm wrestling into will work on that over the top.
- 32:12Speaker 6: I don't think i'd win an arm wrestling so well.
- 32:15Speaker 9: I mean, if you're driving every day and you've got
- 32:17Speaker 9: a contraption where you can just work it while you're
- 32:18Speaker 9: you know, doing those long lines.
- 32:20Speaker 6: So you can imagine arm wrestling one of my strong.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Suits, let's see.
- 32:28Speaker 4: Staying on the subject of Catch twenty two, Greg says
- 32:32Speaker 4: it's he has a Catch twenty two drinking game.
- 32:35Speaker 6: Oh yeah, we were talking about this yesterday.
- 32:37Speaker 4: The game is drink every time a name gets mispronounced,
- 32:41Speaker 4: be drunk by the end of most episodes, and hospitalized
- 32:43Speaker 4: by the time you guys quit saying Caleb Farley.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Yeah that that.
- 32:48Speaker 6: I listen. We talk about a lot of names on
- 32:50Speaker 6: that show, especially this time of year. We're gonna mispronounce
- 32:54Speaker 6: some names. We're gonna say some names poorly. It is
- 32:57Speaker 6: what it is like when you're rattling off two hours
- 32:59Speaker 6: where the draft prospects and you go through fifty guys
- 33:02Speaker 6: an episode. I'm not going to get everybody's name right.
- 33:05Speaker 6: I apologize.
- 33:05Speaker 1: I was working on an all night. Did that sound right?
- 33:08Speaker 6: No?
- 33:09Speaker 10: No, there's probably funnier bets that you and Alex have too,
- 33:12Speaker 10: that you could create a drinking game out of Yeah.
- 33:15Speaker 6: Yesterday somebody emailed it and said that they had created
- 33:19Speaker 6: a drinking game out of some of our crutches that
- 33:21Speaker 6: we say all the time, and I was genuinely curious.
- 33:25Speaker 6: I was like, email more of those in like, yeah, more,
- 33:27Speaker 6: but more. Do you guys hear me or something?
- 33:30Speaker 15: Yeah?
- 33:30Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 33:30Speaker 6: I want to know. And I don't know any of
- 33:33Speaker 6: you guys are How I Met your Mother fans, But
- 33:35Speaker 6: there's an episode off How I Met your Mother where
- 33:38Speaker 6: Robin is she's a TV anchor and she like has
- 33:41Speaker 6: like a phrase that she says all the time and
- 33:43Speaker 6: like they turn it into a drinking game.
- 33:45Speaker 1: So yeah, you got me one.
- 33:47Speaker 9: I remember we were doing a couple of years ago
- 33:49Speaker 9: and you were calling Braden Fisk.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Fisky Fisky and I'm like what I thought that was
- 33:56Speaker 1: a pretty stick. That was just me then my head
- 33:59Speaker 1: and I'm like, is it Fisk? Did I am? I not?
- 34:01Speaker 7: I usually wait till we draft him, right and when
- 34:04Speaker 7: we take them then I learned good good.
- 34:08Speaker 9: We they're coworkers, So it's responsible of you to right
- 34:13Speaker 9: to yeah that out exactly.
- 34:14Speaker 7: You know, I want to be able to know him
- 34:15Speaker 7: if I bump into them that's right, which has happened
- 34:18Speaker 7: never in twenty seven years.
- 34:20Speaker 4: But Justin writes in at this point, I just live
- 34:23Speaker 4: to hear the next wild Do story. He's got an
- 34:26Speaker 4: interesting family history. He's an arsonist. Next we're going to
- 34:30Speaker 4: find out his secret life with the CIA and how
- 34:32Speaker 4: he was instrumental in finding been.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Like, I feel like I'm running out of him though,
- 34:36Speaker 1: you know, like I I don't know, I pull out a.
- 34:38Speaker 9: Gem like that, I'm like, oh, I have one that
- 34:40Speaker 9: I haven't told yet, but I think we all have.
- 34:42Speaker 9: Like my parents, my dad specifically tells a lot of
- 34:45Speaker 9: the same stories. So I live not to tell the
- 34:47Speaker 9: same stories over like I'm telling you the first time
- 34:49Speaker 9: and be like, I.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Know, dudes, yeah, your dad was totally like bubble. You know,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I don't want to repeat stories.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Sure, I'm sure you have more stuff.
- 34:58Speaker 1: I mean, it's got to be topical. I don't even
- 34:59Speaker 1: th you.
- 35:00Speaker 5: Know what they are.
- 35:01Speaker 1: And then you say yeah.
- 35:05Speaker 6: Because every day he kind of just surprises me with
- 35:08Speaker 6: a new story. I'm like, wait, what yep, And that's
- 35:12Speaker 6: just him. Imagine like all the rest of his family,
- 35:14Speaker 6: the stories that they have.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, uh.
- 35:18Speaker 4: Baron Poland talking about replay. We were talking about that Tuesday.
- 35:22Speaker 4: He said, the replay argument is one of the most
- 35:23Speaker 4: stupid things people still argue about in sports when it
- 35:26Speaker 4: should be straightforward and baseball is either a strike or
- 35:29Speaker 4: it isn't. Yes, every hitter has a different zone, but
- 35:32Speaker 4: that zone is still defined. In soccer, football, you're either
- 35:35Speaker 4: offside or not. Football, a player is either in bounds
- 35:37Speaker 4: or not. Tennis, the balls are either in or out.
- 35:40Speaker 4: If it's off by zero point one or so be it.
- 35:44Speaker 4: That's why I don't like the idea of only reviewing
- 35:47Speaker 4: egregious calls.
- 35:48Speaker 1: What does egregious even mean?
- 35:49Speaker 3: For me?
- 35:50Speaker 4: A call can be egregious, and for Paul it may
- 35:52Speaker 4: not be. We're turning something objective into something subjective. If
- 35:56Speaker 4: we draw a line, let's say, at five centimeters, what
- 35:59Speaker 4: happens when it's four point nine to nine centimeters off.
- 36:02Speaker 4: We're right back to arguing over tiny margins.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Anyway, I'm with.
- 36:06Speaker 4: Them to find what it is, and it either it
- 36:09Speaker 4: isn't or it is.
- 36:10Speaker 6: I don't think that we're like talking about drawing a
- 36:14Speaker 6: line between centimeters here. I think the.
- 36:18Speaker 5: Same technology can can detect.
- 36:20Speaker 6: That, Okay, But the egregious.
- 36:23Speaker 10: For something to be egregious means it's like, not subjective,
- 36:26Speaker 10: it's blatantly obvious right to Me's.
- 36:29Speaker 6: An example of what's egregious the Saints Rams NFC championship game.
- 36:36Speaker 6: That is an egregiously bad missed call that cost a
- 36:40Speaker 6: team a trip to a super Bowl most likely. Yeah,
- 36:42Speaker 6: so that is a call that in today's world, with
- 36:46Speaker 6: a million cameras pointed at the at the field all
- 36:49Speaker 6: the time, we should be able to correct on the fly.
- 36:53Speaker 6: And it doesn't have to be this whole state of emergency.
- 36:56Speaker 6: You literally can just buzz down and say, hey, throw
- 36:58Speaker 6: a flag, you missed. You missed this call. Whether a
- 37:02Speaker 6: strike is half an inch off the plate or zero
- 37:06Speaker 6: point four of an inch is off the plate is
- 37:08Speaker 6: not what we're talking about. We're talking about things that
- 37:11Speaker 6: are blatantly just. You could be sitting and watching the
- 37:14Speaker 6: game at a bar and be like, that's blatant.
- 37:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that's blatant. Yeah, but I think he's talking about those.
- 37:23Speaker 4: Those types of refereeing or umpire decisions that are based
- 37:28Speaker 4: on you know, where technology now is involved.
- 37:32Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, you know, it's just hard with blatant stuff
- 37:34Speaker 9: wherever you know that, all right, this is going to
- 37:37Speaker 9: stand and now this is all anyone's going to be talking.
- 37:39Speaker 1: About, is how wrong this call was. That's that's what's hard.
- 37:41Speaker 4: And that's why I think I'm all for the advancement
- 37:45Speaker 4: because I remember and everybody remembers growing up where critical
- 37:49Speaker 4: calls that were obvious to everyone just changed the game.
- 37:53Speaker 5: Let's get rid of those.
- 37:54Speaker 3: I think the issue is that it I think it's
- 37:57Speaker 3: created more problems.
- 37:58Speaker 6: I think it's that slip slip.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Felder told me to say.
- 38:01Speaker 7: That, because he tells me everything to say.
- 38:06Speaker 6: I think it's a slippery thrope, isn't it?
- 38:08Speaker 3: Like?
- 38:08Speaker 6: And I think we're seeing that now where to Bart's email,
- 38:12Speaker 6: the the ball that's just a centimeter off the plate
- 38:16Speaker 6: is now going to review and being told So you.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Think it should be a strike if it's off the plate?
- 38:20Speaker 6: I I don't think that those are the things that
- 38:23Speaker 6: we all need to be bogged down by, right.
- 38:24Speaker 4: And I don't think and if they do it right,
- 38:27Speaker 4: you wouldn't be bogged down for me, Like I don't
- 38:29Speaker 4: know if I I would just do it like tennis,
- 38:32Speaker 4: like have the technology do it all the time.
- 38:35Speaker 7: Tennis is not subjective. The lines are there, right, A
- 38:39Speaker 7: baseball strike zone is subjective.
- 38:42Speaker 3: It's different for every bat.
- 38:43Speaker 4: But what I'm saying, no, it is, it's it's my
- 38:46Speaker 4: Your strike zone is your strike zone.
- 38:47Speaker 7: But the batter, each individual batter is different. So you
- 38:50Speaker 7: could throw a pitch here to Aaron Judge and that's
- 38:53Speaker 7: a strike to Caleb Durban it's not right, and that's
- 38:56Speaker 7: from tennis. It doesn't change the lines.
- 38:58Speaker 5: Don't know, but all Perillo strike zone is defined, right, right,
- 39:04Speaker 5: is it?
- 39:05Speaker 8: You're right?
- 39:06Speaker 3: I mean I don't like.
- 39:07Speaker 7: I just like I don't think it's it's the same.
- 39:11Speaker 7: Tennis is not the same as a baseball strike zone. No,
- 39:14Speaker 7: it is, in my opinion, But strike doesn't mean I'm right.
- 39:16Speaker 4: But Paul Perillo strike zone can be defined right, No,
- 39:21Speaker 4: Why can't it.
- 39:22Speaker 7: Be because it depends on how a guy is leaning. No,
- 39:25Speaker 7: it depends on how tall a guy is, shorter guy.
- 39:28Speaker 5: We know how tall Paul Perilla is.
- 39:30Speaker 7: Okay, But but it's different for every batter. At my point,
- 39:34Speaker 7: it doesn't. It's not different from me tennis point and.
- 39:36Speaker 4: Mike Dussou gets in it's his strike zone and the
- 39:39Speaker 4: technology can adjust to that.
- 39:41Speaker 3: But you are putting way more faith.
- 39:43Speaker 7: In the technology than I am. Maybe That's that's my
- 39:47Speaker 7: problem with it. I agree with everything Evan said, but
- 39:49Speaker 7: I don't want to say that because people don't like that.
- 39:53Speaker 7: Because there's a computer that tells you it's right, they're right.
- 39:57Speaker 7: You tell them that they're wrong, they're going to tell
- 39:58Speaker 7: you how wrong you are.
- 40:00Speaker 5: I am putting faith in the technology.
- 40:01Speaker 7: I admit that I don't, and I think they get
- 40:04Speaker 7: a lot of crap wrong.
- 40:05Speaker 5: And I think you keep working at it until you
- 40:07Speaker 5: get it right. But I think i'd rather have that
- 40:10Speaker 5: if I'm Paul Parillo getting up to the plate, I'd
- 40:14Speaker 5: rather know that it's going to be the same every
- 40:16Speaker 5: time I get up.
- 40:17Speaker 7: It took me the second game of the Red Sox
- 40:19Speaker 7: season for me to lose interest in the baseball season
- 40:22Speaker 7: with that nonsense.
- 40:23Speaker 1: See, but they're not doing it the way I want
- 40:25Speaker 1: to do it.
- 40:27Speaker 3: They're terrible, like the Red Sox.
- 40:30Speaker 7: No, like you mean it, like I don't want to
- 40:33Speaker 7: watch the second inning of you know, a two to
- 40:36Speaker 7: two pitch, you know, Like that's that's not why I
- 40:39Speaker 7: don't want sports.
- 40:39Speaker 5: I don't like the way they're doing it now either.
- 40:41Speaker 7: I don't watch sports so they can go to review
- 40:44Speaker 7: every freaking play.
- 40:46Speaker 3: I don't watch sports for that.
- 40:47Speaker 6: They I couldn't agree more. They saved baseball with the
- 40:50Speaker 6: pitch clock.
- 40:51Speaker 7: Yes, the fact that it was instead and they brought
- 40:53Speaker 7: it back and now they're going to end up with
- 40:54Speaker 7: another work stops.
- 40:55Speaker 6: The fact that the page of the game picked up
- 40:57Speaker 6: so much brought me back to baseball. It brought us
- 41:00Speaker 6: back to me and just back to baseball, to watching
- 41:02Speaker 6: it because it didn't take four hours to get through
- 41:05Speaker 6: a game. Right now, we have to say, it's like
- 41:07Speaker 6: in football where you have to wait, is there is
- 41:09Speaker 6: there a flag? Is there a flag?
- 41:10Speaker 12: No?
- 41:10Speaker 6: Okay, celebrate right? And now baseball, is he challenging? Is
- 41:14Speaker 6: he challenging? Then he challenges, then I'll pass it takes
- 41:16Speaker 6: the helmet off, and then he's got to look behind him,
- 41:18Speaker 6: and then he's got to wait for the challenge.
- 41:21Speaker 1: It's it's like it takes ten seconds.
- 41:24Speaker 7: Ten seconds, but I don't waste not watching anything.
- 41:27Speaker 4: But in my way, it's there's no challenge. There's no challenge,
- 41:31Speaker 4: just like tennants, there's no challenging any.
- 41:32Speaker 6: If they could get it so that it was fast
- 41:34Speaker 6: enough for the game to.
- 41:35Speaker 5: See, it'll be instant.
- 41:37Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 41:37Speaker 7: And I don't think you're wrong because you like the
- 41:40Speaker 7: technology of it and you enjoy that aspect of it.
- 41:44Speaker 3: I hate, I don't.
- 41:45Speaker 1: I hate.
- 41:46Speaker 7: That's okay, Like it's okay that you like the technology
- 41:49Speaker 7: and that other people are thinking this is pushing the
- 41:51Speaker 7: games forward.
- 41:52Speaker 3: I don't like where it's putting the games.
- 41:54Speaker 5: What I hate is bad umpiring behind the plate.
- 41:57Speaker 1: I hate that.
- 41:58Speaker 6: But there's a but there's a difference. Been bad umpire
- 42:01Speaker 6: like C. B. Buckner the other day advocates and the
- 42:05Speaker 6: ball is a blade off the plate and he called
- 42:07Speaker 6: it a strike. That doesn't make the guy a bad umpire, No, you.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Know, like I'm not saying it does. But I also
- 42:14Speaker 4: like a pitcher who nips the corner to be rewarded.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good pitching, and you should get that.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Call, okay, but every time.
- 42:24Speaker 6: But you can't in the bottom left corner and in
- 42:28Speaker 6: the top right corner, those both can't be strikes. If
- 42:30Speaker 6: it hits the plate, it is, it can't both be
- 42:33Speaker 6: a strike.
- 42:33Speaker 5: Then redefines what a strike is it?
- 42:36Speaker 3: But it is.
- 42:36Speaker 6: But we've been doing this for one hundred and fifty years,
- 42:38Speaker 6: where that's without technology.
- 42:40Speaker 4: What I'm saying is you can define the strike you
- 42:43Speaker 4: can correct what I'm saying.
- 42:44Speaker 6: You can correct what like how you're you're asking the
- 42:48Speaker 6: batter to cover the entire plate.
- 42:50Speaker 4: If so, if that's impossible, then redefine the strike zone.
- 42:53Speaker 6: They don't have to because umpires have just been calling
- 42:56Speaker 6: the strike zone the same way the whole time, and
- 42:58Speaker 6: so like, I think the difference is.
- 43:01Speaker 5: But you're saying what you just said is not accurate,
- 43:04Speaker 5: and I'll say differently, right, but they have like some
- 43:08Speaker 5: umpires have lower strikes sounds, sometimes have higher strikes sounds.
- 43:11Speaker 6: As long as they're consistent with the call, then nobody.
- 43:14Speaker 4: Gets mad and they try, right are they pretty much?
- 43:19Speaker 3: It's human.
- 43:19Speaker 7: They do a pretty good job at balls and strikes
- 43:21Speaker 7: in Major League Baseball. I am an ump and ref
- 43:24Speaker 7: basher to the extreme. IB partner is incompetent. He doesn't
- 43:28Speaker 7: belong out there. One of the best things to happen
- 43:31Speaker 7: in baseball yesterday was him getting.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Nailed with a follow ball and knocked out again. He's okay.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Has anyone had a worse month than him?
- 43:40Speaker 3: I mean, really, it's a worst career.
- 43:43Speaker 7: There's no there's no line of work that someone is incompetent,
- 43:48Speaker 7: as that would not have gotten fired.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Other than that, it's unbelievable.
- 43:51Speaker 7: But I will say this to your on your on
- 43:53Speaker 7: your side, that I think might happen to you. I
- 43:56Speaker 7: think that you'll see say like five years, ten years,
- 44:00Speaker 7: as the umpires go through and they like.
- 44:03Speaker 3: You just this is the way you do. It's like
- 44:06Speaker 3: Alex with social media.
- 44:07Speaker 7: This is just what she grew up with, so it's
- 44:09Speaker 7: second nature to her, as opposed to.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Me having to like sort of learn it.
- 44:13Speaker 7: These umpires will go through the minor leagues with the
- 44:16Speaker 7: ABS system and it'll be no big thing for them,
- 44:19Speaker 7: and by the time ten years goes by, there won't
- 44:21Speaker 7: be as much problem trying to differentiate Mary.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:27Speaker 7: Yeah, we like to Evans's point, some guy now who's
- 44:30Speaker 7: been doing it for fifteen twenty years who might have
- 44:32Speaker 7: a low strike zone, that won't be a thing in
- 44:34Speaker 7: ten years. You won't have a low strike zone or
- 44:36Speaker 7: a high strike zone. You'll learn what the computer calls
- 44:40Speaker 7: a strike and you'll adjust accordingly.
- 44:42Speaker 9: And when I say just let the computer call it, well,
- 44:46Speaker 9: I mean, Paul, are you saying that you think the
- 44:48Speaker 9: umps will then improve because they'll know how to work
- 44:50Speaker 9: in conjunction with that, and you'll.
- 44:51Speaker 7: Use the word improved. Fred would use the word improve.
- 44:55Speaker 7: I would say, they'll just get used to it. I
- 44:57Speaker 7: don't think that would be for the better of the game, because,
- 44:59Speaker 7: as I said on Tuesday day, and again people don't
- 45:01Speaker 7: agree with me, the high outside pitch and the low
- 45:04Speaker 7: inside pitch can't both be strikes to the same guy.
- 45:06Speaker 7: Otherwise we're just going to have dominant pitching and no
- 45:09Speaker 7: one's ever going to get a hit because that's a
- 45:14Speaker 7: that's way too much plate to cover.
- 45:15Speaker 9: So is that the baseball thing is that that's a
- 45:18Speaker 9: that's a baseball specific that you can't what a strike
- 45:21Speaker 9: zone is.
- 45:22Speaker 1: You're not going to get those calls.
- 45:23Speaker 9: Well, I don't understand why you're saying you can't call
- 45:25Speaker 9: those because I don't think it's.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Not over the plate in my opinion.
- 45:29Speaker 5: Okay, so then make it that way.
- 45:32Speaker 3: But now it's going to be over the plate. The
- 45:34Speaker 3: computer is am but.
- 45:36Speaker 5: You control what the computer says.
- 45:38Speaker 6: If a pitcher is getting the low corner strike right,
- 45:41Speaker 6: and so then the batter has to adjust and know, okay,
- 45:44Speaker 6: that's the umpire is calling that a strike. If you
- 45:47Speaker 6: then give them the top of the zone is also
- 45:49Speaker 6: there's the plate coverage of the what the batter has
- 45:51Speaker 6: to cover, it's going to make it extremely difficult.
- 45:54Speaker 4: But what you're saying is it's not the computer that's flawed.
- 45:58Speaker 4: It's the strike zone that's so change. The strike zone.
- 46:04Speaker 9: Is you guys seem to know a lot about this
- 46:05Speaker 9: and I know nothing about it. And I just like
- 46:07Speaker 9: the strike but like I don't understand what like look
- 46:11Speaker 9: at Twitter.
- 46:13Speaker 1: But sometimes and I and I get this.
- 46:15Speaker 4: According to Paul, the strike zone is too big, so
- 46:19Speaker 4: there's too much area to cover for.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Any human being. No, no, no, no, I'm saying I
- 46:24Speaker 1: used That's what I'm hearing.
- 46:26Speaker 3: I used an extreme example.
- 46:27Speaker 7: I don't say first of all, this system is kind
- 46:31Speaker 7: of designed to help offense because and here's something that
- 46:37Speaker 7: is I don't know.
- 46:38Speaker 3: We should we continue this?
- 46:39Speaker 5: Okay, No, sure, I don't know.
- 46:41Speaker 3: People could tell us stuff.
- 46:43Speaker 7: I think one of the things that people are sort
- 46:45Speaker 7: of concerned about red Sox wise will bring it to Boston.
- 46:48Speaker 5: Or they need just a swing of freaking bad.
- 46:50Speaker 7: They brought into two starting pitchers that are supposed to
- 46:52Speaker 7: be a big part of their rotation in Sunny Gray
- 46:54Speaker 7: and Ranger Suarez, neither one of which is necessarily considered
- 46:58Speaker 7: a power pitcher. They're guys that rely on painting the corners,
- 47:02Speaker 7: and it's harder to paint the corners now because if
- 47:05Speaker 7: you miss the corner by as Fred says, if you're
- 47:08Speaker 7: painting that corner, but you know, maybe like the brushstroke
- 47:11Speaker 7: didn't actually hit the the furthest edge, that's a ball now.
- 47:17Speaker 3: That's a ball now.
- 47:18Speaker 7: So that forces guys that don't have the power stuff
- 47:24Speaker 7: to come over the plate. So the ABS system in
- 47:27Speaker 7: the minors has increased offense, and they think it will
- 47:31Speaker 7: help offense in the major leagues. I don't like it
- 47:34Speaker 7: because I think it's all artificial. I don't like the
- 47:36Speaker 7: artificial influence on the game.
- 47:38Speaker 3: But that's just me.
- 47:39Speaker 7: It doesn't mean that I again I said this Tuesday.
- 47:42Speaker 7: It doesn't mean that I'm right, just because I don't
- 47:44Speaker 7: like the over officiousness of the ABS system. But I
- 47:49Speaker 7: do think it's probably gonna end up helping I mean
- 47:52Speaker 7: that sounds hypocritical to what I said about the I
- 47:54Speaker 7: used an example like extreme with the high and low
- 47:58Speaker 7: inside and outside. But overall, I think it's going to
- 48:01Speaker 7: be harder for pitchers who want to see if they
- 48:05Speaker 7: can expand the stripe zone when they're up in the
- 48:07Speaker 7: count to get strike three because it's not going to
- 48:10Speaker 7: get called.
- 48:11Speaker 4: If it's off, it shouldn't be. But I think it
- 48:13Speaker 4: would also help them.
- 48:14Speaker 7: It'll just never saw any place where you're only allowed
- 48:17Speaker 7: to be one hundred percent right, like if you if
- 48:19Speaker 7: you miss one, like you should be excommunicated. Like it's like,
- 48:24Speaker 7: should they replace the picture with it with a robot.
- 48:28Speaker 6: I've seen.
- 48:29Speaker 4: I've seen just as many times where the picture does
- 48:32Speaker 4: nip that corner and they call.
- 48:33Speaker 5: It a ball.
- 48:34Speaker 3: That's part of the game. That's what I'm saying. That's
- 48:37Speaker 3: the beauty of it.
- 48:38Speaker 5: No, no, umpire being wrong is not the beauty of it.
- 48:42Speaker 3: But you say he's wrong, it doesn't mean he is.
- 48:45Speaker 6: I also just think that like this is we're splitting
- 48:48Speaker 6: hairs here to like this is at any point this
- 48:51Speaker 6: is what made you not like baseball. I don't say that, okay,
- 48:54Speaker 6: so then why then what are we talking about?
- 48:56Speaker 7: I get frustrated he's been up at night wanted to
- 48:59Speaker 7: ball like she's that pitch was right on the corner.
- 49:01Speaker 3: I've always said that I never to blame everybody everything.
- 49:06Speaker 4: I've always said this about balls and strikes. I hate
- 49:09Speaker 4: it when they get it wrong.
- 49:10Speaker 6: I have never once, and look I'm not I don't
- 49:14Speaker 6: want I watched the Red Sox. I don't watch other baseball.
- 49:16Speaker 6: I'm not a baseball purist like that, but I have
- 49:20Speaker 6: never watched sat down and watched the Red Sox game
- 49:22Speaker 6: and just like been turned it off because of like
- 49:27Speaker 6: it was so egregiously bad. The strike zone was so
- 49:30Speaker 6: bad that I just couldn't take it. Like maybe like
- 49:32Speaker 6: once or twice a season, like the C. B. Buckner
- 49:34Speaker 6: thing would happen, but like that, that's very rare. Like
- 49:37Speaker 6: when we were watching the World Baseball Classic and the
- 49:39Speaker 6: Dominican the tournament ends for the Dominican on a play
- 49:42Speaker 6: a ball that's six inches off the plate that needs that, Yeah,
- 49:46Speaker 6: that is ridiculous, but half an inch.
- 49:49Speaker 4: Like listen for me, if it happens one time where
- 49:53Speaker 4: my pitcher throws a strike and it's called a ball
- 49:56Speaker 4: ball four, that's enough for me.
- 49:59Speaker 5: I want that correct.
- 50:00Speaker 4: I want my picture rewarded, and I also want my
- 50:02Speaker 4: batters protected against bad calls.
- 50:05Speaker 1: I want.
- 50:05Speaker 5: But to me, it helps both sides. It helps the
- 50:07Speaker 5: picture and the batters.
- 50:08Speaker 6: I'm just not sure if it solved the problem. I
- 50:11Speaker 6: don't I don't know if it was a big enough
- 50:13Speaker 6: problem that needed solving to add such a this has
- 50:18Speaker 6: changed the game completely.
- 50:19Speaker 4: And I go back to tennis, and I know it's
- 50:21Speaker 4: not the same thing. Tennis is a little bit more
- 50:23Speaker 4: cut and dry. But you know, when they instituted the hawkey,
- 50:27Speaker 4: at first you could challenge, so it wasn't you know,
- 50:29Speaker 4: you had to do the challenge. And now it's everything.
- 50:32Speaker 4: And I think it's improved watching tennis so much. You know,
- 50:36Speaker 4: like you don't have to worry about this idiot lines
- 50:39Speaker 4: person who just gets it wrong and there's there's nothing
- 50:42Speaker 4: you can do as a player until they brought in
- 50:45Speaker 4: this technology.
- 50:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I just I mean even listening to the broadcasts,
- 50:49Speaker 6: you know, for the first week of the season, is
- 50:51Speaker 6: he going to challenge? Is he not going to challenge?
- 50:53Speaker 6: Is you know, should he challenge?
- 50:55Speaker 4: Right?
- 50:55Speaker 6: Strategy?
- 50:57Speaker 5: It's everything right now.
- 50:59Speaker 6: I mean, they give a time, Can we just play
- 51:01Speaker 6: the game?
- 51:01Speaker 4: Oh you Curmudgeons, new technology.
- 51:06Speaker 3: I agree with you on tennis. Yeah, yeah, but it's
- 51:09Speaker 3: it's finite.
- 51:10Speaker 7: It's right there. It's like it's either in or out.
- 51:13Speaker 7: But there's no line when the guy is up at bat.
- 51:15Speaker 7: But that's what a line to go.
- 51:16Speaker 4: But I believe that Paul parillo strike zone will be
- 51:19Speaker 4: Paul Parole's strike zone and it is just as cut
- 51:22Speaker 4: and dry as what Tennis will is.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Now, I don't think that, but that's okay.
- 51:26Speaker 6: It's interesting to be on the same side as Paul.
- 51:28Speaker 10: So does every up have with every batter in a
- 51:32Speaker 10: game that they're calling, they know every batter in the order,
- 51:35Speaker 10: like how to adjust their strike zones?
- 51:37Speaker 3: They just in their head, Well they're trying. No, they're
- 51:40Speaker 3: trying to figure that out.
- 51:41Speaker 5: No, no, no, she's saying. Before the technology.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Right, oh yeah, you just look.
- 51:45Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean so to Fred's point, you could put
- 51:49Speaker 10: that into a system they have.
- 51:51Speaker 6: That's what this is.
- 51:52Speaker 2: That's what this is, right, So what's I don't understand.
- 51:56Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 51:56Speaker 3: I just think I just don't think it's the way
- 51:59Speaker 3: the game is supposed to we played. I think that
- 52:01Speaker 3: you're supposed to hit the ball.
- 52:02Speaker 7: With Tennis in the line like that, like in you know,
- 52:05Speaker 7: either on the line or inside like That's there's no
- 52:08Speaker 7: subjectivity to that.
- 52:09Speaker 3: That's cut and dry. That's why the only.
- 52:11Speaker 5: Reason is subjectivity to balls and strikes is because the
- 52:13Speaker 5: human eye can't do it.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Okay, okay, I know it's good.
- 52:20Speaker 5: I love the conversation.
- 52:21Speaker 6: It just comes back to me. I just didn't think
- 52:23Speaker 6: it fixed the problem. That was that big of a problem.
- 52:28Speaker 10: To give it a month, because I feel like I
- 52:30Speaker 10: agree with both of you and I just don't know, and.
- 52:32Speaker 6: I don't I just don't think that as a baseball fan,
- 52:34Speaker 6: I don't think I was like losing sleep over this
- 52:37Speaker 6: type of stuff.
- 52:38Speaker 10: I do, I do when it happens, but like what
- 52:40Speaker 10: happens when a pitcher is throwing a perfect game? And like,
- 52:44Speaker 10: didn't that happen? I really agregious call? Lost the picture
- 52:48Speaker 10: a perfect game? Who's the like bravado?
- 52:51Speaker 3: Jim Joyce? Sure he wasn't. He cried over that, right.
- 52:55Speaker 10: And it was like a huge regret in his life.
- 52:57Speaker 10: And imagine how the picture feels. Like if you can
- 52:59Speaker 10: see a situation like that, I think it's worth it.
- 53:02Speaker 3: I'd be all for it. Again. We're back to that phrase.
- 53:06Speaker 3: We're going to overturn.
- 53:08Speaker 7: Egregious calls like that, like not a stitch of the
- 53:15Speaker 7: baseball may have touched the black of the plate or not,
- 53:18Speaker 7: depending on what it was called. It might have been
- 53:20Speaker 7: called a ball might have been called a strike. No,
- 53:22Speaker 7: Like I don't think that's what we're we're doing. But
- 53:25Speaker 7: I like the conversation with Fred because you will go
- 53:29Speaker 7: back and forth. You have you have a belief in
- 53:32Speaker 7: the technology and you feel strongly about it. You get
- 53:37Speaker 7: involved with some of this stuff with other people, and
- 53:39Speaker 7: it's just like, no, you have you have no idea
- 53:42Speaker 7: what you're talking about. You don't know this, you don't know,
- 53:44Speaker 7: like and it's just that's not I mean, I argue
- 53:47Speaker 7: anybody with with anybody for anything, right, Like, it's just
- 53:50Speaker 7: not I don't like, that's not fun to argue for me,
- 53:52Speaker 7: Like if you can't go back and forth and Fred's
- 53:55Speaker 7: making points to counteract the points that I'm trying to make,
- 53:59Speaker 7: you know, is like I agree with.
- 54:01Speaker 3: Both of you, Like that's that's fun debate like to go.
- 54:05Speaker 7: Like for Evan and I, it's more of like what
- 54:07Speaker 7: we It's not so much that we're arguing with Fred
- 54:10Speaker 7: about the technology itself.
- 54:11Speaker 3: We're I doing.
- 54:12Speaker 7: We don't need like that doesn't enhance our viewing of
- 54:15Speaker 7: the game, You know what I mean?
- 54:16Speaker 6: When it enhanced my viewing of the game was the
- 54:18Speaker 6: game getting faster. So anything that inhibits speed, I am
- 54:22Speaker 6: against get in the box and throw the pitch like
- 54:25Speaker 6: I don't. I don't want anything else disrupting that because
- 54:29Speaker 6: it I'm not going to sit there for four hours
- 54:31Speaker 6: and watch a baseball game.
- 54:32Speaker 12: I'm not.
- 54:33Speaker 5: It was too long, and it was dragging out, and
- 54:35Speaker 5: it was it was a great.
- 54:36Speaker 4: Advancement, you know, perfect. I don't like the ghost runner
- 54:41Speaker 4: in extra innings.
- 54:42Speaker 6: Another thing, why we don't need to be there all
- 54:44Speaker 6: night in game seventy two.
- 54:46Speaker 3: I don't like that, Like, get this over with, I
- 54:51Speaker 3: know it. Just I love three on three overtime in
- 54:55Speaker 3: the NHL.
- 54:56Speaker 6: Three on three shootout and everybody go home, all right.
- 54:59Speaker 6: I think they need to do that something like that.
- 55:00Speaker 5: What I do love is lunch, and it's here. So

- 57:32Speaker 17: an energy. I think when our players come in on
- 57:34Speaker 17: April twentieth, I think there's going to be an energy
- 57:36Speaker 17: they're going to enjoy coming to work just from the
- 57:41Speaker 17: how nice it is, the functionality, the space, all those
- 57:46Speaker 17: types of things so be able to be a great
- 57:50Speaker 17: place for learning, great place to develop our players. And
- 57:55Speaker 17: you know, just a weight room to the training room,
- 58:00Speaker 17: to the locker room, cafeteria. You know, just the meeting
- 58:05Speaker 17: space that we have is going to be really nice.
- 58:08Speaker 5: Mike.
- 58:08Speaker 18: I know it's better than to ask you about the
- 58:10Speaker 18: potential for replacement officials. However, the New York Command Center,
- 58:14Speaker 18: the officiating center in your time, paying very close attention
- 58:19Speaker 18: to how they adjudicate calls.
- 58:22Speaker 19: How do you view what's that?
- 58:26Speaker 8: Google?
- 58:28Speaker 19: How do you feel the officiating center does?
- 58:32Speaker 17: And have you wanted to say they do as good
- 58:35Speaker 17: a job as they possibly can and the time that
- 58:37Speaker 17: they have a lot.
- 58:38Speaker 8: Of to them.
- 58:40Speaker 17: There are some calls that are very difficult, and I
- 58:44Speaker 17: think the big one is the quarterback.
- 58:46Speaker 8: Whether it's the tuck or the fumble or the pass, it's.
- 58:51Speaker 17: All right, stretching out just been whatever to call in
- 58:54Speaker 17: the field is We're going to let that one.
- 58:55Speaker 8: Stand because that's probably not getting overturned.
- 58:57Speaker 17: So I think that they try to use a standard
- 59:03Speaker 17: of clear and obvious and the biggest thing is that
- 59:08Speaker 17: we understand what they believe to be clear and obvious.
- 59:11Speaker 14: Like your experience last year, Hey, buddy, everything guys that
- 59:14Speaker 14: you knew and figuring out guys that you didn't know.
- 59:19Speaker 19: How'd you kind of navigate between them?
- 59:21Speaker 8: How is there a risk to bringing in a guy
- 59:23Speaker 8: that you don't know? I think that there's.
- 59:27Speaker 17: You just have to be very careful. I mean in
- 59:29Speaker 17: free agency. I think that you're referring to. It happens
- 59:34Speaker 17: so quick and if you you know, you're looking at
- 59:39Speaker 17: the player on film, you can watch as many games
- 59:41Speaker 17: you want to watch, but you really don't have an
- 59:42Speaker 17: opportunity to know who that person is.
- 59:45Speaker 8: Unlike the draft, where you have so many.
- 59:49Speaker 17: Touch points from our scouts, from our coaches, from pro days,
- 59:54Speaker 17: from visits and combine.
- 59:56Speaker 8: So you just have to be very careful with the type.
- 1:00:00Speaker 17: But people that you're bringing in in free agency, speaking
- 1:00:03Speaker 17: of that.
- 1:00:03Speaker 19: Have been bothered to your team on enough just.
- 1:00:06Speaker 17: To professionalism a comfort, you know, I would say that
- 1:00:11Speaker 17: the consistency in which he operates and functions has been
- 1:00:15Speaker 17: very impressive over the time that I've known Kevin.
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: He cut me off.
- 1:00:22Speaker 10: I didn't realize you are, he said, that he thinks
- 1:00:26Speaker 10: that you're a little bit more tame now compared to
- 1:00:28Speaker 10: when you first.
- 1:00:29Speaker 8: Started at We have to see what he gets here.
- 1:00:32Speaker 8: I have a relationship though evolve over.
- 1:00:35Speaker 17: I mean he started out I was first time head coach,
- 1:00:37Speaker 17: and then I had to, you know, be able to
- 1:00:43Speaker 17: implement a program that I felt like was best for
- 1:00:48Speaker 17: for our team and what they needed in Tennessee.
- 1:00:54Speaker 8: You know, I guess I'm as tame as I need
- 1:00:56Speaker 8: to be.
- 1:00:57Speaker 18: Mike, speaking of fire upon this, players that you've had
- 1:01:01Speaker 18: in the past, how do you guard against having like
- 1:01:03Speaker 18: a blind spot those guys?
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: Do you like?
- 1:01:06Speaker 17: We always want to bring in talented players, you know,
- 1:01:11Speaker 17: whether we knowing them is important, but also talent is
- 1:01:16Speaker 17: important too, So again we'll try to manage what we
- 1:01:21Speaker 17: feel like are the people that we.
- 1:01:23Speaker 8: Bring in and that we know and compared to their
- 1:01:26Speaker 8: talent level.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: That's your players concerns. I'm an NFL report card, especially
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: with a team playing.
- 1:01:33Speaker 8: Don't want to focus on the report card.
- 1:01:35Speaker 17: I want to focus on what our players say to
- 1:01:38Speaker 17: me and the stretch and anybody in an organization, we
- 1:01:41Speaker 17: constantly are are asking them. You know, we have a
- 1:01:45Speaker 17: leadership group that we believe in and that we trust.
- 1:01:50Speaker 17: We won't be able to make every recommendation, we won't
- 1:01:53Speaker 17: be able to do every single thing that they want
- 1:01:55Speaker 17: to do, but we listen to them and we try
- 1:01:57Speaker 17: to add things in the training room, try to add equipment.
- 1:02:01Speaker 8: I know for a fact, on.
- 1:02:03Speaker 17: Numerous occasions players have asked about different modalities in the
- 1:02:07Speaker 17: training room. I've gone to Jim, asked him to order
- 1:02:11Speaker 17: it going to stretch, you know, Jonathan and Robert have
- 1:02:15Speaker 17: gladly okateed it. Something came across my desk the other day. Hey,
- 1:02:20Speaker 17: we added this last year. It works out so good,
- 1:02:23Speaker 17: we want to add another one. So we're constantly trying
- 1:02:26Speaker 17: to get feedback from the players on things that we
- 1:02:29Speaker 17: can do to to.
- 1:02:31Speaker 8: Help them do their job.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: Interesting you, you guys have an opportunity to pick up
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: his stick, the option.
- 1:02:41Speaker 17: If we haven't picked it up, we should pick it up.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Extend him.
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: He's going into the year making We want a million.
- 1:02:51Speaker 17: We want to make sure that we draft extremely well,
- 1:02:54Speaker 17: and then we identify the guys that we want to
- 1:02:57Speaker 17: keep with us UH and that have earned and UH
- 1:03:01Speaker 17: long term extensions with us. And Christian Gonzo is certainly
- 1:03:06Speaker 17: one of those players and you know, but I can't
- 1:03:09Speaker 17: comment on the negotiations to you.
- 1:03:12Speaker 20: I think you mentioned maybe challenging your staff to come
- 1:03:15Speaker 20: back with new ideas. I'm actually curious from from your perspective, like, well,
- 1:03:19Speaker 20: who do you turn to, whether it's read a book,
- 1:03:22Speaker 20: you know, mentors to come up with your own, like
- 1:03:25Speaker 20: new ideas for how to keep things stretch.
- 1:03:29Speaker 17: I think that, uh, you know our staff and you
- 1:03:33Speaker 17: know stretch. You know obviously you know different coaches around
- 1:03:40Speaker 17: our league or other leagues. You know, you know, Joe
- 1:03:43Speaker 17: does such a great job with with the Celtics, you know,
- 1:03:46Speaker 17: just to start that they've been able to have without
- 1:03:50Speaker 17: without Jason has been really really impressive. So a lot
- 1:03:53Speaker 17: of communications with him and other coaches you know around
- 1:03:58Speaker 17: the league, and you know, a lot of thought.
- 1:04:00Speaker 8: I think, try to bounce ideas off of.
- 1:04:05Speaker 17: Really just come up with something, think about it, you know,
- 1:04:11Speaker 17: give it some time, how do you enhance it, how
- 1:04:13Speaker 17: do you marry it. There's a lot of time in
- 1:04:14Speaker 17: the offseason, so but try to be intentional and just
- 1:04:17Speaker 17: never want to be a gimmicky with what we do
- 1:04:19Speaker 17: with the players.
- 1:04:20Speaker 16: What's the player development where it comes to a guy
- 1:04:24Speaker 16: who's got versatility trying not to give them too much.
- 1:04:27Speaker 17: Is that they can do well, you're talking about a
- 1:04:30Speaker 17: young player, buck or you Yeah, just banking sure that
- 1:04:32Speaker 17: they don't get overloaded and that they can get proficient
- 1:04:36Speaker 17: at something. And then I'd say the better they do,
- 1:04:41Speaker 17: the more we would try to give them. You know,
- 1:04:45Speaker 17: whether that is an offensive lineman that may play two
- 1:04:50Speaker 17: positions or a receiver that may play multiple positions. But
- 1:04:55Speaker 17: you know, certainly we try to figure out what the
- 1:04:58Speaker 17: player does best, do that and then see what else
- 1:05:01Speaker 17: they can do tod and enhance.
- 1:05:02Speaker 8: That Isn't that pretty easy? That a fly when they
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: start to swim a little bit, I think so. I
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: think when you start to see him slow down, you
- 1:05:09Speaker 8: know what a player?
- 1:05:11Speaker 17: You know, one coach which I thought was was really insightful.
- 1:05:17Speaker 17: It was like, sometimes you can't tell the difference between
- 1:05:19Speaker 17: a player that doesn't know what to do or one
- 1:05:23Speaker 17: that's afraid to do it.
- 1:05:24Speaker 8: They're both pretty slow, uh and not very.
- 1:05:29Speaker 17: Reactive, and so we have to try to measure what
- 1:05:32Speaker 17: that looks like on the field and then maybe pull
- 1:05:34Speaker 17: back on some stuff.
- 1:05:36Speaker 8: The team released Josh last week.
- 1:05:39Speaker 17: Quarterbacks at some point, yeah, we need we need a
- 1:05:42Speaker 17: third arm. And you know, try to find a young
- 1:05:44Speaker 17: guy that you know, we can develop and uh, you know,
- 1:05:49Speaker 17: potentially add to the to the roster, whether that's on
- 1:05:51Speaker 17: the fifty three man roster or the practice squad.
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: Does that an anyways?
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Speak to Drake slog the maturity.
- 1:05:58Speaker 19: And development that you can take on a younger guy.
- 1:06:01Speaker 8: I think that's probably pretty accurate. You know.
- 1:06:03Speaker 17: I think that I really appreciative of what Josh did
- 1:06:07Speaker 17: for us coming in last year, with Drake going into
- 1:06:10Speaker 17: his second year, and I've communicated that with Josh and said,
- 1:06:14Speaker 17: I think it's just a different situation now, So that's
- 1:06:17Speaker 17: probably pretty accurate. Get them, Stacy, Well, I love him.
- 1:06:25Speaker 8: Give you a nine of them, Bring as many tight
- 1:06:29Speaker 8: ends as we can get. It's not gonna be something
- 1:06:31Speaker 8: you look at in April.
- 1:06:33Speaker 17: I hope, yeah, I hope there's a good uh again,
- 1:06:37Speaker 17: I think just trying to find, uh, you know.
- 1:06:40Speaker 8: The the right guy.
- 1:06:41Speaker 17: There's different you know, some of them are receiving, some
- 1:06:43Speaker 17: of them are more the line of scrimmage, some.
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: Of them a little bit of both, you know.
- 1:06:47Speaker 17: So I think we'll just try to come up with
- 1:06:50Speaker 17: the one that fits us best and see where we
- 1:06:51Speaker 17: can draft him.
- 1:06:54Speaker 8: Earlier, I think somebody else. What do you got your call.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: With a thirty first pick?
- 1:07:03Speaker 8: Do you feel that that needs to shine?
- 1:07:06Speaker 17: Rogers getell with the thirty first pick in this year's draft?
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: Do you should that be an immediate impact player?
- 1:07:15Speaker 8: Are you comfortable taking plays player available? Hopefully maybe we
- 1:07:19Speaker 8: trade up, maybe we trade out. I don't know, but.
- 1:07:21Speaker 17: Uh, you know, I love being able to work with
- 1:07:27Speaker 17: with Elliott and Ryan. Elliott and Ryan their staff coaching
- 1:07:31Speaker 17: and trying to bring that together. I'm trying to bring
- 1:07:33Speaker 17: a coach's perspective on a player and and the personnel's
- 1:07:37Speaker 17: side together to bring the best person in there for
- 1:07:40Speaker 17: our football team.
- 1:07:42Speaker 8: Thank you, guys.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: And now great moments in history.
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: And Brandon Spikes's work bikes, he's at Florida. He's working
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: back at the Alma Mada and uh and he's you know,
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: he's helping out Florida's program, trying to get them back,
- 1:08:02Speaker 6: you know, to where they were when he was there
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: and things like that.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: And so is he still on the internet. I asked
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Evan about that yesterday.
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: I'm sure you know I'm going to plead the fifth
- 1:08:13Speaker 7: You want his only fans account?
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: You get a license for that thing.
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a great That was a great moment
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: in PFW.
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: And oh yeah, oh, you guys discovered the.
- 1:08:25Speaker 7: Does a Google search of Brandon Spike is junk and
- 1:08:28Speaker 7: Frank goes, I have seen it.
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: I have seen it, and then I said it in
- 1:08:32Speaker 6: the elevator yesterday, and then.
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: Paul starts grilling you have you seen Miko?
- 1:08:37Speaker 8: Yes?
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: Have you seen Sosa?
- 1:08:39Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: I do not just go. I don't get that. I
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: have no desires search.
- 1:08:45Speaker 17: That's another great moment from.
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: All right back here. Patriots have filmed today five five
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: past five hundred podcasts at patriots dot com the email address.

- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Cutting down I've been.
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: I've been wearing my brunts too. But you know, think
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: about that. You've got stuff that you're going to be
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: having to do. We had a lot of rain, especially
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: New England.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: It's gonna be muddy. You know when this ground for
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: you know, truly thaws, it's going to be a mess.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: So get your brunts.
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: Yeah, so myke the brount work, where is it? Uh?
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: Flame resistant?
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:10:28Speaker 9: What's important for you that.
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: I don't know if they make flame retard.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Well, there's our tradesman too. Well there's our tradesmen too.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: They would need their stuff.
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: You would think I think they have specialty stuff right
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: that they wear. No yesterday, Paul, myself and Mike do
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: So took part in the Hall of Fame committee, and uh,
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: you know, we're not allowed to talk about the conversations
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: in the room, but here's what I'll tell you.
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: I don't know'sation.
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: We don't know officially who is going to be the
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: three nominees that get presented for you, the fans, to
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: vote on.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: But we can guess that Rob Gronkowski is.
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: Going to be one of them in his first year
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: of eligibility, and I and it should be Adam Vanieri
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: being another one.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: He'll be another one. Those two I think are definitely.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: And didn't make it because he lost out to Julian Edelman,
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: and he'll probably be on the ballot this year against
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: Rob Gronkowski. I am asking you, as fans when it
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: comes time to vote in a week or so whenever
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: they release it, to vote for Adam Viniti. Gronk is
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: going to get in, not this year if you vote
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: for Vinitaria, but probably next year. Vinitary is already in
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Should have went in
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: last year. Let's get him in this year. Let's get
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: him off the table. So it doesn't become one of
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: those situations where every year he's going against somebody who
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: is more recent in our memory and you know, has
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: recency biased on their favorite.
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: Let's get Adam in this year. Let's get it over with.
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: Let's vote him in.
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: He's a Hall of Famer, the greatest kicker in the league,
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: like just like you could say Gronk is the greatest
- 1:12:14Speaker 4: tight end the league. Vinitary is the greatest kicker in
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: the league. Certainly the greatest kicker ever to wear a
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: Patriots uniform. You know, without him, you don't win that
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Snowball and you don't win your first super Bowl, and
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: that's what started everything.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: So let's get him in this year.
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: People, I'm asking you spread the word vote for Adam
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: vanity that Paul.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Do you want to make a case for anyone.
- 1:12:40Speaker 7: I'm going to be good here because I don't want
- 1:12:42Speaker 7: to get myself in political trouble.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: But that's tough.
- 1:12:47Speaker 7: What forget about what you think and forget about who
- 1:12:50Speaker 7: you think is the most deserving.
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: Vote Adam I am.
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: I'm asking you because he is. Of course Gronk is deserving,
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: and I think the majority of fans if you've you know,
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: had your Q factor rating.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: You know what that is. The young people know what
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: that is.
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: How About we just eliminate that one.
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: How about we say, this is arguably the greatest tight
- 1:13:11Speaker 7: end in the history of football against the greatest kicker
- 1:13:13Speaker 7: in the history of football.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: Who do you think is more deserving?
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: Yeah, well I think Gronk is so Like.
- 1:13:19Speaker 7: In other words, this isn't the travesty that in my word,
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: not anybody else's that last year was. This is not
- 1:13:25Speaker 7: going to be laughable, It's not going to be embarrassing.
- 1:13:28Speaker 7: It's the fans vote Rob Gronkowski over Adam Benette.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: And I know that they will.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: That's why I'm asking you to right, I'm asking you for.
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: One year and to hold off.
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: I know that the majority of fans, when they see
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: a ballot that has Vinetarian Gronkowski, They're going to vote
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: for Gronkowski. I'm I'm you know, giving you that point.
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: I'm just asking you not to do it for one year,
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: just so we can get Adam in.
- 1:13:54Speaker 6: I'm more interested in two things. One, I want to
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: hear about Deuce's experience because I used the comparison yesterday
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: of like this is like Joe Pesci and goodfellows when
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: he everybody finds out he's going to get made. That
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: That's how me and Barthelt, knowing that one of ours.
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: And Mike.
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: Get into the you know, with the cigars and the
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: closed room and you know all that. The other thing
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: that I find interesting is something that Paul told me
- 1:14:21Speaker 6: about was Dante high Tower and his name getting brought
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: up for nomination.
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: It was one of the eight players nominated.
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: We all agree that Gronk and Vinitary should be on
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: the ballot. For me, personally, I think that Dante high
- 1:14:36Speaker 6: Tower should be the third verson nominated on the ballot,
- 1:14:39Speaker 6: But I think Paul disagreed with me, and I'm curious
- 1:14:41Speaker 6: about everybody's opinion. I disagree, great, Why do you disagree?
- 1:14:48Speaker 8: Great?
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Well, it was I mean, I was just first.
- 1:14:50Speaker 9: I just think Phil Paro did a great job of
- 1:14:52Speaker 9: bringing high Tower up. Knew he probably wasn't going to be,
- 1:14:54Speaker 9: you know, a finalist this year, but you know, pointing
- 1:14:57Speaker 9: out all his clutch plays in the Super Bulls that
- 1:15:00Speaker 9: you know, we all know not an NFL Hall of Fame,
- 1:15:02Speaker 9: Pro Football Hall of Fame guy. But I thought, I
- 1:15:05Speaker 9: mean Paul pointed out he thought it was my first time.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: You thought, you know, supposed to talk about his conversation,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: but it's okay if you talk.
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: Okay, I'm giving a permission he can.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:14Speaker 9: But uh but no, it was it was obviously really
- 1:15:16Speaker 9: cool to be there. I mean an honor to be
- 1:15:18Speaker 9: amongst all those people who clearly have such a such
- 1:15:22Speaker 9: a sense of Patriots history. And you know, I found myself.
- 1:15:25Speaker 9: I kind of thought through what I thought before, and
- 1:15:29Speaker 9: then guys made compelling cases, you know, and and you know,
- 1:15:32Speaker 9: mostly Tatuba is an example, was brought up and a
- 1:15:34Speaker 9: lot of people talking about him, and it's hard for
- 1:15:38Speaker 9: me is I have like a connection with him, you know,
- 1:15:39Speaker 9: my it was like the first player, first football player.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: I remember my cousin dated his son like you know, and.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: I so here we go after.
- 1:15:51Speaker 9: My god Sofa, I mean, I met Lofafa has been
- 1:15:54Speaker 9: in my house for like Easter, I think before, you know,
- 1:15:58Speaker 9: so just personal connection to the guy.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: But the forest go in. But when I boiled it down.
- 1:16:04Speaker 9: Really and and you know, to Evan's point talking about
- 1:16:06Speaker 9: high Tower, really it came down for me for the
- 1:16:08Speaker 9: last spot between Logan Mankins and Wes Welker. You know,
- 1:16:11Speaker 9: I had ven Terry and and uh and and Gronka course,
- 1:16:14Speaker 9: and those are the last two guys that I was
- 1:16:16Speaker 9: kind of kicking around. But I think you boil down
- 1:16:18Speaker 9: these considerations into there are certain guys that had a
- 1:16:22Speaker 9: longevity about them that maybe wasn't h you know a
- 1:16:25Speaker 9: lot of statistical achievement, but was contributions in various ways
- 1:16:30Speaker 9: and different games, and you know, over a period of time,
- 1:16:33Speaker 9: really carving out which is what Mosey did, carved out
- 1:16:36Speaker 9: a role as a patriot for life and a special teamer.
- 1:16:39Speaker 9: And you know, but there are also people that weren't
- 1:16:42Speaker 9: here very long. I mean, Wes Welker, I think you know,
- 1:16:44Speaker 9: Paul did a great job laying out with him of
- 1:16:46Speaker 9: six seasons total, that six years that he was with
- 1:16:50Speaker 9: New England.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: But had prolific production. So that's you know, kind of
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: where you.
- 1:16:58Speaker 9: Know, I guess when you said it, it just sounded short
- 1:17:00Speaker 9: to me. I mean, I just and that's probably a testament.
- 1:17:03Speaker 9: Did you know how much production he had just over
- 1:17:06Speaker 9: those short period of times. So you know, High Tower
- 1:17:08Speaker 9: another guy who was here for I mean I wouldn't
- 1:17:11Speaker 9: say even a long time.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: But had done enough to you know, really earn the nominee.
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: Paul just got another tankard of diets.
- 1:17:23Speaker 6: They had to give Paul a shot in the arm.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: You need a Snickers, buddy, Paul's a little low. Can
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: we get some diapepsi in right now?
- 1:17:32Speaker 6: So it was it was I'm just surprised that people
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: like you said that Phil laid out the case for
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: High Tower, knowing he probably was like that. It was
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: such a It wasn't even like a like people like
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: were like, no, He's definitely not like that surprises me.
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: I think that High Tower in a lot of ways
- 1:17:50Speaker 6: is similar to will Fork, where like you have to
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: the stats don't do it justice to the type of
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: impact that he made on a game to game basis
- 1:17:58Speaker 6: in the middle of the defense. You know, he has
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: the signature plays on top of that, you know, obviously,
- 1:18:05Speaker 6: I think maybe one of the best plays of any
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: Patriots Super bowls him atacking marshaw on at the one
- 1:18:11Speaker 6: yard line with one arm and to you know, set
- 1:18:14Speaker 6: up the Malcolm Butler interception. The strip sack gets a
- 1:18:16Speaker 6: lot of love, but he was carp Blanche the quarnerback.
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: Nobody blocked them and he and he stripsacked him. I
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: think he probably should have been the MVP of Super
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: Bowl fifty three. I think he was the best player
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: in the game about it, So I think he should
- 1:18:27Speaker 6: have been the most Valuable player of a super Bowl
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: on top of it. And then you look at all
- 1:18:31Speaker 6: of the things that he would do under the hood
- 1:18:34Speaker 6: of compressing space, taking on blockers, you know, occupying blockers
- 1:18:38Speaker 6: so that other guys could go ahead and make the
- 1:18:40Speaker 6: play on the ball. You know, all these things that
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: we talk about with guys like Seymour and Will Fork
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: who didn't necessarily have like high level production because they
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: were doing their job for the defense. His versatility, his
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: ability to play on and off the line of scrimmage,
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: his pass rush predictivity, like just across the board. One
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: of the best Patriots that I ever got to And
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: Phil did a good job of all of that.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: Yeah he did.
- 1:19:03Speaker 12: He did.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: Yeah, And I'm not saying Phil did it well.
- 1:19:05Speaker 9: I did Hear though, how you compare him to Logan Mankins,
- 1:19:08Speaker 9: who I mean, same thing, probably even to a more
- 1:19:11Speaker 9: extreme extent, you know, And there's a compelling case made
- 1:19:14Speaker 9: for him the best offensive lineman that that someone had
- 1:19:16Speaker 9: ever seen.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: But it's like a five time All Pro.
- 1:19:18Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, it's just it's it's hard to compare
- 1:19:21Speaker 9: prolific wide receiver and excellent guard, you know, a kicker
- 1:19:25Speaker 9: who And look, and I brought up the point to
- 1:19:27Speaker 9: Paul afterwards. It was, you know, is it worth discussing
- 1:19:29Speaker 9: that Adam did? Then Terry played for the Colts for
- 1:19:32Speaker 9: a long time, and you know, I just offering the
- 1:19:34Speaker 9: question of Paul. Is he a Hall of Fame? Is
- 1:19:36Speaker 9: he the greatest kicker of all time? If his career
- 1:19:39Speaker 9: ended in O five after with the Patriots? And I
- 1:19:41Speaker 9: know that, you know, I'm just.
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: Trying to answer was yes, but you're still put.
- 1:19:45Speaker 9: Through different perspectives of you know, look, he's yes, he
- 1:19:49Speaker 9: was in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but did
- 1:19:51Speaker 9: not have a little bit at least to do with that.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: He played for the Colts for a long time, and was.
- 1:19:54Speaker 7: I think he would have been in any way, but
- 1:19:56Speaker 7: probably he wouldn't probably be in now. Yeah, yeah, like
- 1:20:00Speaker 7: if he didn't set all the records, right, you know
- 1:20:02Speaker 7: that he ended up compiling in a dome.
- 1:20:04Speaker 9: And well he's the leading scorer of all time, Well
- 1:20:07Speaker 9: he wouldn't be, you know, like so and look, I'm
- 1:20:09Speaker 9: not trying to knock out in Minitarry.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: These are just all of the debates that you kind
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: of kick around.
- 1:20:14Speaker 7: But I don't think that you can just, you know,
- 1:20:16Speaker 7: for this particular individual case, like you say, like if
- 1:20:19Speaker 7: he didn't go to Indy, well, does he stay in
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: New England and kick the rest of his career because
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: he would be the all time leading scorer if he
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: did that. Like, he didn't just do that because he
- 1:20:27Speaker 7: was in a dome. Now did he play more years
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: in a dome?
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: Probably?
- 1:20:31Speaker 7: Did he have more field goal attempts because they were
- 1:20:33Speaker 7: in a dome? Probably, But he'd be if he played
- 1:20:37Speaker 7: whatever many years he played for Indy, how many more years?
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: About pointing?
- 1:20:40Speaker 9: He played with maybe the two best quarterbacks in the league.
- 1:20:43Speaker 9: So that did that have something to do with some
- 1:20:45Speaker 9: of the parts.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: That he still want to kick him? Yeah, but that's
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: I'm just having some fun, That's no.
- 1:20:50Speaker 7: And this is this is why I enjoy the conversation. Now,
- 1:20:54Speaker 7: Fred and I do a lot, spend a lot of
- 1:20:56Speaker 7: time at these meetings rolling our eyes at each other.
- 1:20:59Speaker 7: Matter of fact, Fred me in the middle of the
- 1:21:00Speaker 7: day yesterday, in the middle of one particularly inane ranton.
- 1:21:06Speaker 7: So we Fred and I have some fun with it,
- 1:21:07Speaker 7: but that is part of the conversation that I enjoy.
- 1:21:10Speaker 7: Like someone can look at Lawyer molloy in his career,
- 1:21:13Speaker 7: Brian Moury does it all the time and it's almost
- 1:21:17Speaker 7: identical to what Rodney Harrison did. But Rodney is just
- 1:21:21Speaker 7: so much more high profile. You know, he was involved
- 1:21:24Speaker 7: in two titles plus the Undefeated Team. Lawyer you know,
- 1:21:28Speaker 7: left in a contract dispute, so you kind of look
- 1:21:31Speaker 7: like it's it's very subjective. You look at it in
- 1:21:33Speaker 7: a much different way. On the field as Patriots, they
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: were very similar players. They didn't do exactly the same thing,
- 1:21:40Speaker 7: but they were very like production, you know.
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: I mean, Lawyer malloy was like one of my first
- 1:21:46Speaker 6: favorite players as a Patriot fan, and I think that
- 1:21:50Speaker 6: he was one of those guys that similar to Rodney
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: that just like set a tone for the defense and
- 1:21:57Speaker 6: was like kind of a.
- 1:21:57Speaker 7: Heartbeat and in the locker room too, Like heitude intimidating dude,
- 1:22:02Speaker 7: play with.
- 1:22:02Speaker 6: A play demeanor, like a physicality that I'm sure Rabel
- 1:22:05Speaker 6: like really appreciates like that that that's the type of
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: guy that these types of things are for. I just
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: Macons and Welker are more than deserving to be on
- 1:22:15Speaker 6: the ballot individually, like Macons is a guard so he
- 1:22:18Speaker 6: obviously doesn't have those like signature moments that a guy
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: like High Tower might be able to put together. But
- 1:22:23Speaker 6: probably the second best lineman in Patriot history behind John Hannah.
- 1:22:27Speaker 6: I would think all you know, coach Scarr says he's
- 1:22:31Speaker 6: the best lineman he's ever coached. When when Dante Scarneki
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: is saying that you gotta that has to hold a
- 1:22:37Speaker 6: lot of weight. I just think High Tower is in
- 1:22:39Speaker 6: the conversation with those three, so that would agree. So
- 1:22:42Speaker 6: the way that it was kind of presented of like
- 1:22:44Speaker 6: not that I was in the room, but the way
- 1:22:46Speaker 6: that you guys told me it was presented of like
- 1:22:48Speaker 6: it's probably not gonna happen for High Tower this year,
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: but we should talk about it. I think that that
- 1:22:52Speaker 6: needs to be a bigger conversation.
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: Yeah, I think that was more of a Gronk Vinetarity thing, like, yeah,
- 1:22:58Speaker 7: we were all like I did the same thing when
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: I did Welker. You know, like he's not gonna he's
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: I don't think he has any sniff of a chance
- 1:23:06Speaker 7: like over Gronk to get in the Hall of Fame,
- 1:23:09Speaker 7: nor should he even though I've been sort of making
- 1:23:11Speaker 7: the case for Wes Welker, So I think that's what
- 1:23:15Speaker 7: where you know, the the Dante stuff, but High Tower
- 1:23:19Speaker 7: absolutely Patriots Hall of Fame material.
- 1:23:21Speaker 9: Yeah, it was just weird for me to be in
- 1:23:22Speaker 9: that position of you know, basically Welker, Mankins, Wayne.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: Who who went with?
- 1:23:31Speaker 8: You know?
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: I just yeah, I.
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: Think I had Adam, Gronk and West.
- 1:23:36Speaker 9: Yeah, he's I mean special player, and you know, I
- 1:23:38Speaker 9: just I thought there was Paul did a good job of.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: A muff spread. I had Gronk, Adam and West.
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: Sorry, well, you know, when it comes time to vote,
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: you'll you'll do the right thing.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: You're a fan, right, Paul R.
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: Think I'm going to vote online the Wes Welker.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: Wont every day makes a bot that just VOTs every.
- 1:24:00Speaker 15: Deuteron you have to click than just his readers like
- 1:24:08Speaker 15: doing like mail in ballots for Paul's people, you know,
- 1:24:11Speaker 15: like people that don't know how to use computers.
- 1:24:16Speaker 7: Passionate please sounds like the democratic self addressed men, Like we.
- 1:24:22Speaker 6: Have knowing like the age range of the voters, Like
- 1:24:26Speaker 6: can we do some exit polling here? Because like I
- 1:24:28Speaker 6: bet you that like it's it's a social media vote.
- 1:24:31Speaker 6: It is essentially a factor. So like it's got to
- 1:24:33Speaker 6: be a lot of people under the age of forty
- 1:24:36Speaker 6: and my generation are the ones that are going to
- 1:24:38Speaker 6: vote for Gronk because we remember Gronk.
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: Ye See, I got called out in the meeting, rightfully,
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: so because last year we had this conversation about how
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: Adam had no shot to win over Edelment.
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and I made the case, yes he does. I said,
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: you know, I'm sixty four. Back then I was sixty three.
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: I use the internet. I know how to vote on
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: the internet. Why does another people? Why don't other people
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: know how to do it? I said, you're not giving
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: enough credit to the fans. And then of course this year,
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: boy just called me out. I said, we had somebody
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: last year that I raised my hand and said I
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: was that guy.
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: Something else.
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: I have faith in the fans.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: I think I was the guy, and I still do.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: I think you have a point, Fred.
- 1:25:23Speaker 10: I think Edelman just has done such an amazing job
- 1:25:26Speaker 10: of keeping himself so relevant, and he plays the game,
- 1:25:30Speaker 10: you know, Foxborough forever.
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: I'm not playing for anyone else. And like he.
- 1:25:34Speaker 10: Also other people came up at a time, I've been
- 1:25:37Speaker 10: so salty today. He came up at a time where
- 1:25:40Speaker 10: social media was just catching on, and he embraced it,
- 1:25:42Speaker 10: and he built his brand off the field like that,
- 1:25:44Speaker 10: and it made him probably such a larger than life
- 1:25:47Speaker 10: personality than he otherwise would have been. So I wonder
- 1:25:50Speaker 10: if Edelman's the right person for your argument, because I
- 1:25:54Speaker 10: do kind of agree with you, Like we have callers
- 1:25:56Speaker 10: into the show and emailers that have no problem emailing
- 1:25:59Speaker 10: us that are geriatric age no offense.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: I don't think it's an age related thing.
- 1:26:04Speaker 7: I think plenty of people can go online and vote,
- 1:26:07Speaker 7: but I think it's a recency thing.
- 1:26:10Speaker 6: Yeah, me too, Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:12Speaker 7: I just like if it was Gronk and Edelman, I
- 1:26:15Speaker 7: think Gronk would win in a landslide. It's the same
- 1:26:18Speaker 7: guy that's in, you know, like as Alex just said, accurate,
- 1:26:23Speaker 7: the same guy that's done a great job of putting
- 1:26:25Speaker 7: himself out there against another guy who's done.
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: All those things right. But one isn't but one's better.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: Objective Football Hall of Famer Edm's not right.
- 1:26:35Speaker 6: The Welker one, to me is the fascinating one. And
- 1:26:37Speaker 6: I think, like we'll come back to the Mankins and
- 1:26:40Speaker 6: the Welkers, Like once we get through some of the
- 1:26:43Speaker 6: guys with all the hardware like that, that those guys
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: will resurface and well they'll get in. But like Welker objectively,
- 1:26:49Speaker 6: and I love Julian Edelman, like one of my all
- 1:26:52Speaker 6: time favorites, but Welker objectively is a better player than
- 1:26:56Speaker 6: Julian Edelman. And he can't sniff it like he can.
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: I can't even get him on the ball, like he's
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: He's not.
- 1:27:02Speaker 6: A better character. He's not a better you know, clutch performer.
- 1:27:06Speaker 6: I even though that is even like, oh.
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: The debating season numbers are comparable.
- 1:27:11Speaker 7: Yeah, there's a lot more games for Edelman, so that
- 1:27:14Speaker 7: like talking about the per game averages, right, he didn't
- 1:27:16Speaker 7: have Julian Julian's postseason numbers.
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: He didn't have the.
- 1:27:19Speaker 6: Same like bravado clutch toughness, right that Edelman did. But
- 1:27:26Speaker 6: there's no like I think Welker was just an objectively
- 1:27:29Speaker 6: better player, like and they played kind of the same position,
- 1:27:32Speaker 6: not exactly.
- 1:27:33Speaker 7: But basically in six years he had better production than
- 1:27:36Speaker 7: Edelman did. At eleven eleven, Edelman was on the Pagetes
- 1:27:39Speaker 7: of twelve. He missed I think the seventeen season with
- 1:27:42Speaker 7: the twenty a cl and he has I think, what
- 1:27:46Speaker 7: did I say, thirty two more catches and basically half
- 1:27:49Speaker 7: the time.
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Like if you just go on.
- 1:27:52Speaker 7: Numbers, and it shouldn't just be about numbers. And I
- 1:27:54Speaker 7: have no problem if people say Edelman should go before Welker,
- 1:27:57Speaker 7: that doesn't that doesn't bug me, like them in going
- 1:28:00Speaker 7: over Vanitari did last year, or my favorites Matt Lyt
- 1:28:04Speaker 7: and Kevin Falk going in ever period, Like I don't
- 1:28:08Speaker 7: think either one of those guys, all due respect, Kevin
- 1:28:10Speaker 7: Fox is one of my all time favorite guys to
- 1:28:13Speaker 7: talk to in the locker room.
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: Like you think Rabel.
- 1:28:16Speaker 7: Bust my chops with the if you're just slopped talking Paul,
- 1:28:19Speaker 7: like you should have seen what Kevin Fox used to
- 1:28:21Speaker 7: do to me.
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: I love Kevin Falk, but I don't really think he
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: was good enough to be a Patriots Hall of Famer.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: He wore that, he wore that.
- 1:28:28Speaker 9: Jersey and got in good move by him, especially when
- 1:28:31Speaker 9: you look through the lens of the people you're considering now.
- 1:28:34Speaker 9: But there's also just part of me this is a
- 1:28:36Speaker 9: Hall of Fame, fame fame, like I can't get that
- 1:28:38Speaker 9: word out of my head that you know, that's part
- 1:28:41Speaker 9: of it, like who are the famous Patriots who represent
- 1:28:43Speaker 9: the Patriots? And I know, you know, mostly to Tublu
- 1:28:46Speaker 9: is not going to get nominated or whatever.
- 1:28:48Speaker 6: But like after this case was by that definition he
- 1:28:51Speaker 6: should get it.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: He should, I know.
- 1:28:53Speaker 9: And that's and I didn't vote for him, but like
- 1:28:55Speaker 9: after the pitch, I'm like, this is kind of like
- 1:28:58Speaker 9: most should be in there.
- 1:28:59Speaker 6: I mean, he was really famous patron about.
- 1:29:02Speaker 9: Well, he didn't do anything bad as well, I'm saying,
- 1:29:05Speaker 9: don't get Hernanda's in.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: Everybody know who he is. He was pretty famous.
- 1:29:12Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: But do you think that you know, it's kind of
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: like m VP you have to be good to right,
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: It's not.
- 1:29:21Speaker 9: Yeah, but I think that there's a little wiggle room
- 1:29:24Speaker 9: with a team Hall of Fame.
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: As I've always said, this team they're all criteria is
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: different than pro football.
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: There are some.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: Guys that are just our guys.
- 1:29:34Speaker 9: And you know, when Paul laid out the thing for
- 1:29:36Speaker 9: Welky yesterday and it was brought up the you know,
- 1:29:39Speaker 9: the stupid pass that you know, one of the members
- 1:29:42Speaker 9: blatantly put it on Tom.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Brady for a bad throw. But we all know that throw.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: And I think back to how I felt about Wes
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: Welker in.
- 1:29:49Speaker 9: Two thousand and seven when that offense was absolutely humming
- 1:29:52Speaker 9: and he.
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: Was just I mean the crazy eyes.
- 1:29:55Speaker 9: I remember watching him like to return U punt and
- 1:29:57Speaker 9: his eyes are just widely, you know, white blue, and
- 1:29:59Speaker 9: like this guy's a psycho and he's like five to
- 1:30:01Speaker 9: seven and I love him, and I just I that
- 1:30:04Speaker 9: brought back all the memories to me, and that was
- 1:30:06Speaker 9: kind of I think why I wrote Welker instead of
- 1:30:08Speaker 9: Mankins for the third spot.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: You know, no disrespect to Logan Mankins.
- 1:30:12Speaker 6: He's around, he does a lot of guys can only yeah.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: He kind of is though.
- 1:30:17Speaker 6: And Welker, I mean ten twenty eleven, like he did it,
- 1:30:21Speaker 6: you know without Moss taking the top off the defense
- 1:30:23Speaker 6: here he was unguardable in the sun so you couldn't
- 1:30:25Speaker 6: cover him.
- 1:30:25Speaker 7: My heart wasn't in it yesterday because I've been beating
- 1:30:28Speaker 7: down so many times. But I'll give you a couple
- 1:30:31Speaker 7: of my greatest hits to your point. So in O
- 1:30:34Speaker 7: seven and I forget the exact number, I think he
- 1:30:36Speaker 7: caught one hundred and fifteen passes and seven the first
- 1:30:39Speaker 7: year is here. Let's just call it one hundred and fifteen,
- 1:30:43Speaker 7: and then you know the next year, Brady gets hurt.
- 1:30:46Speaker 7: He misses the whole yearybody's like, oh, I was going
- 1:30:48Speaker 7: to see his production dropped. He caught one fewer pass, yeah,
- 1:30:51Speaker 7: for ten less yards. So with or without Brady numbers
- 1:30:55Speaker 7: exactly the same.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: His yards perception are exactly the same. Ten point five.
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: How many catches was it?
- 1:31:00Speaker 9: One?
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Twelve and twelve and one eleven.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: For ten few yards?
- 1:31:04Speaker 7: In eight with Matt cask Castle quickness nine another one
- 1:31:08Speaker 7: of my greatest hits.
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: He gets hurt.
- 1:31:10Speaker 7: He tears his a cl in the last game of
- 1:31:12Speaker 7: the season at Houston. He gets hurt. That's arguably the
- 1:31:16Speaker 7: single worst playoff loss of the Brady era. They got
- 1:31:20Speaker 7: eviscerated without west Well, lost his binkie, lost his binkie.
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: They could do nothing that day.
- 1:31:27Speaker 7: I mean, and again to Evan's point, Moss leaves and
- 1:31:30Speaker 7: he just keeps on going towards a cl The last
- 1:31:33Speaker 7: game of that season, how many games he missed, zero
- 1:31:38Speaker 7: he missed.
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: He was back for Opening Day.
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: They won that game, right, the Houston game.
- 1:31:41Speaker 7: The game that you insist that they won somehow I
- 1:31:44Speaker 7: mean he was, uh, they really won that game.
- 1:31:46Speaker 9: He was the third place for Offensive Player of the Year,
- 1:31:48Speaker 9: second team All Pro, second team All Pro, and eight
- 1:31:51Speaker 9: as well First team All Pro.
- 1:31:53Speaker 7: In six seasons, five Pro Bowls, two first team All Pros,
- 1:31:56Speaker 7: two second team All Pros.
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: I think he came in.
- 1:32:00Speaker 7: He got votes in the Comeback Player of the Year
- 1:32:02Speaker 7: after his year that he tore his ACL, but he
- 1:32:05Speaker 7: was back for the opener that year, and I mean he.
- 1:32:08Speaker 9: Just he in his drop off season in twenty ten
- 1:32:11Speaker 9: off eighty six eighty six catches and seven touchdowns, which
- 1:32:16Speaker 9: the third career fourth most touchdowns in the season.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's just staggering when you look at
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: these numbers.
- 1:32:22Speaker 7: And that's why I looked at his postseason numbers, which
- 1:32:24Speaker 7: he's considered a choker because he didn't catch the pass
- 1:32:27Speaker 7: in the twenty eleven Super Bowl. He had ten for
- 1:32:31Speaker 7: one oh three and the Giants gone, the first Giants
- 1:32:33Speaker 7: won the undefeated game. He his percentage you know of
- 1:32:40Speaker 7: you know, target reception, you know, like Stefan Diggs had
- 1:32:43Speaker 7: an unbelievable catch percentage last year was like in the eighties, right,
- 1:32:47Speaker 7: something like that, seventy.
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: Five eighty percent efficiency efficiency.
- 1:32:50Speaker 7: Thank you for you know, speaking speaking English, efficiency speaking
- 1:32:55Speaker 7: you know English, for me, words are hard. His efficiency
- 1:33:00Speaker 7: in the postseason is actually better than it is in
- 1:33:01Speaker 7: the regular season. So like even if you want you
- 1:33:05Speaker 7: throw that like, oh, he couldn't do it. They didn't
- 1:33:07Speaker 7: win any super Bowls. They couldn't do it in the clutch, Like, no,
- 1:33:11Speaker 7: he did.
- 1:33:11Speaker 9: He had twenty seven catches in the seven playoffs, I
- 1:33:14Speaker 9: mean three games, he had twenty seven catches.
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: I mean he was chill.
- 1:33:17Speaker 10: I just remember if Gizelle never said that, would.
- 1:33:21Speaker 6: I just remember when you know, playing they would run.
- 1:33:26Speaker 6: She killed him so many players to get him matched
- 1:33:28Speaker 6: up on the linebackers in the safeties in the middle
- 1:33:31Speaker 6: of the field, and he just they couldn't cover them.
- 1:33:33Speaker 6: And as it sort of evolved, other teams were starting
- 1:33:36Speaker 6: to try to emulate the same sort of actions and
- 1:33:38Speaker 6: things like that. And here comes the nickel corners, right,
- 1:33:41Speaker 6: and now the slot corner becomes more and more prevalent
- 1:33:44Speaker 6: because they couldn't put bigger bodies on Wes Welker.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: He was too good.
- 1:33:49Speaker 6: So they then they started to move their corners inside
- 1:33:52Speaker 6: and start to line corners up against them, and he
- 1:33:54Speaker 6: dusted them too, So it just was like, not only
- 1:33:58Speaker 6: did he sort of have the production, but like he
- 1:34:00Speaker 6: kind of changed the game.
- 1:34:01Speaker 9: And schematically and he was part of that whole evolution.
- 1:34:05Speaker 9: I mean I just that that to me, all these
- 1:34:07Speaker 9: things added up, and it's just it's always been a
- 1:34:09Speaker 9: shame to me that one misconnection with Brady in the
- 1:34:12Speaker 9: Super Bowl.
- 1:34:12Speaker 7: And in full disclosure, when we acquired him, I wasn't
- 1:34:18Speaker 7: a huge fan of the move I I you know,
- 1:34:21Speaker 7: it's just like, yeah, I mean he's okay, you'll fit in.
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: And I famously called him to fred a nice little player.
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: Pocket change, pocket change. I think I think I actually
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: called him loose change.
- 1:34:32Speaker 7: Now, okay, yeah, I'm mad enough to admit I was
- 1:34:35Speaker 7: one hundred percent wrong.
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: He changed the game.
- 1:34:38Speaker 7: Troy Brown to me was the the quintessential slot guy.
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: He was better than Troy Brown.
- 1:34:43Speaker 7: Yeah, and I love Troy, everybody knows that, sure, but
- 1:34:47Speaker 7: he was a better player than Troy Brown.
- 1:34:49Speaker 9: Yeah, A nice little player that's probably generous.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: Like the football always looks.
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: That's actually him respondingly, the football always looks so bad.
- 1:34:58Speaker 15: Again, Yeah it looked like a little player.
- 1:35:02Speaker 7: Yeah, we had him on and they put I gotta
- 1:35:06Speaker 7: give you. I gotta give him credit. Andy and Fred
- 1:35:07Speaker 7: they were like immediately like, so, how would you respond
- 1:35:11Speaker 7: if someone described you as a nice little player?
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: And Wes went a nice little player?
- 1:35:17Speaker 7: And then Castle was on. He called Castle a tall,
- 1:35:22Speaker 7: skinny bench warmer.
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: That was I think that was the end of.
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: Having We didn't get that much, like they're not coming
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: on your show anymore.
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: That's too much fun anyway.
- 1:35:35Speaker 9: On the it's kind of nice to stick it in
- 1:35:37Speaker 9: Bill's face every once in a while.
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: Yeah, he didn't like, well, was that after the Broncos thing?
- 1:35:42Speaker 8: Was that?
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Or was that something?
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: How does he feel about feet?
- 1:35:46Speaker 9: Which, by the way, I don't know we talked about this,
- 1:35:48Speaker 9: but like now they're saying, I mean Mike Smith this
- 1:35:50Speaker 9: year said that they kind of wrecks and Mike Smith
- 1:35:53Speaker 9: kind of put him up to that to that foot thing,
- 1:35:55Speaker 9: like they we're kind of daring West to do it.
- 1:35:58Speaker 9: It was yea, there was a hole behind. It wasn't
- 1:36:02Speaker 9: like West just let's get him. It was like, you
- 1:36:04Speaker 9: won't say it.
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: Michael Smith, his name right, right, Mike Mike Smith.
- 1:36:10Speaker 9: Okay, okay, So I thought that was that was funny
- 1:36:13Speaker 9: to another one though, for that whole resume thing.
- 1:36:17Speaker 7: So if that Ravens wild card game wasn't the worst
- 1:36:20Speaker 7: postseason loss and Brady's you know, like not non super
- 1:36:23Speaker 7: Bowler edition.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: The one he was benched was the second worst.
- 1:36:26Speaker 7: The next year when they get knocked out in the
- 1:36:27Speaker 7: division round at home by the Jets, was that and
- 1:36:29Speaker 7: he got.
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: Benched for the first quarter?
- 1:36:32Speaker 8: Right right?
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yep, Rex pulling the Jedi my trick apparently.
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:36:38Speaker 6: I just sawways like his ninety nine yard touchdown. It
- 1:36:41Speaker 6: was like a highlight, that so big he's holding it
- 1:36:43Speaker 6: like ingrained in my brain forever.
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: That's the one where it looks like a rugby. It
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: takes up like it starts at his stomach, it goes.
- 1:36:52Speaker 6: All the way to tell it, And that's why he
- 1:36:55Speaker 6: was so so lovable.
- 1:36:56Speaker 9: I mean, Paul talked about him getting or someone else
- 1:36:59Speaker 9: spoke about him getting lit up in one of the
- 1:37:01Speaker 9: games and then talking to him after.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: I mean, you just saw that guy take so many hits.
- 1:37:05Speaker 5: Yeah, he got lit up.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: You know, it's just time.
- 1:37:07Speaker 9: I'm glad we're having a little Wes Welker love fest
- 1:37:09Speaker 9: because I just it's such a shame that he was such.
- 1:37:11Speaker 7: Going to be quite a while before he gets in, though,
- 1:37:14Speaker 7: great Guy uh More Hall of Fame emails coming in
- 1:37:18Speaker 7: Sean Vancouver.
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: Sean writes in Adam VINTERI should be in the Patriots
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: Hall of Fame. The eligibility requirement of four years since
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: retirement is there are so players we'll get into the
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: hall Patriots Hall of Fame before Canton.
- 1:37:29Speaker 5: That's correct.
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: Now Adam is going to be going to the Professional
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: Hall Football Hall of Fame. The Patriots have more players
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: deserving of that honor than all the other NFL teams.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: Many fans will vote for Gronk over Adam because they
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: don't want to see that happen again. They want Gronk
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: honored in New England before Canton.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: Well, this is.
- 1:37:47Speaker 5: He'll like I said, we'll get in next year.
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: You know what, Just vote for Adam.
- 1:37:53Speaker 7: I don't think can I just can I go on
- 1:37:55Speaker 7: the record just maybe people don't agree with this. I
- 1:37:58Speaker 7: don't find it embarrassing in any way if a guy
- 1:38:02Speaker 7: gets in the Pro Football Hall of Fame before he
- 1:38:04Speaker 7: gets in the Patriots Hall of Fame. I don't think
- 1:38:06Speaker 7: that there's anything like there's a lot of guys that
- 1:38:08Speaker 7: are lined up. We only put one in a year,
- 1:38:11Speaker 7: our committee, we can only nominate three and the fans
- 1:38:14Speaker 7: can only choose one. The NFL, the Pro Football Hall
- 1:38:18Speaker 7: of Fame class is whatever seven like, so there's more
- 1:38:22Speaker 7: opportunities to get in. The thing that happened to Vin
- 1:38:26Speaker 7: Terry about the timing, which I didn't even realize until
- 1:38:28Speaker 7: the meeting yesterday, is when Adam was four years out,
- 1:38:31Speaker 7: the first year that he should have been eligible was
- 1:38:33Speaker 7: the year that we put Brady in.
- 1:38:34Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:38:35Speaker 7: Singularly, we didn't even have a vote. We didn't have
- 1:38:37Speaker 7: a nomination committee that year. Adam would have gone in
- 1:38:41Speaker 7: that year because Brady wasn't eligible yet.
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: We waived the period for Brady for obvious reasons. I
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: know that makes it him probably mad, because he's a
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: little salty on Brady.
- 1:38:50Speaker 6: Today right now.
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: But he would have gone in that year, right.
- 1:38:55Speaker 7: That was his first year of eligibility for the Patriots
- 1:38:58Speaker 7: Hall of Fame, his fourth year out yep.
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: Then last year was actually his fifty year out.
- 1:39:02Speaker 7: He didn't get in the Pro Football Hall of Fame
- 1:39:03Speaker 7: on the first try, right, And that's where we should
- 1:39:07Speaker 7: have been able to, you know, Unfortunately, the vote didn't
- 1:39:09Speaker 7: go the way we all think it should have.
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: Now, we have this situation.
- 1:39:14Speaker 7: But I don't think it's an embarrassment if Gronk goes
- 1:39:17Speaker 7: in over Edelman.
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: I mean, oh god, no, Adam.
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: No, I'm asking. I'm not.
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: I'm not.
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: I'm not asking because I'm I think Adam is more
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: worthy than Gronk. I'm just asking for a favor. Let's
- 1:39:32Speaker 4: get Vinitary done and we'll take care of Gronk next
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: Year's all.
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: It's a reasonable assome I'm saying.
- 1:39:39Speaker 9: Should we shouldn't plead for Welker, you know, I mean
- 1:39:41Speaker 9: we could do that too, right, we could counter Fred.
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: Because I just don't. I don't believe that.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: I don't believe he should be a case for that.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: You know, come on, do we ever.
- 1:39:51Speaker 6: Put any film up in these in these meetings.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: Or we No, No, we don't know.
- 1:39:55Speaker 5: We watched the games?
- 1:39:56Speaker 6: No, it's ever done that.
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: Now it's a good way to kill committee.
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: But like he gets on the committee.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: But Clickers coming out makes a good point. I like
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: high Tower.
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: For some people, maybe they don't understand all the things
- 1:40:12Speaker 4: that you were talking about that, you know, the behind
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: the scenes. I'm not saying he does on the field
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: that doesn't always get recognized. And if you maybe that
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: would be something that Stacy would allow, is Hey, can
- 1:40:24Speaker 4: I just point out, I mean the things that go
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: unnoticed that we're integral to winning.
- 1:40:30Speaker 10: And I think that's like a younger person's perspective too,
- 1:40:33Speaker 10: because see, Dante high Tower is probably my favorite defensive
- 1:40:37Speaker 10: Patriot ever, and I think that's just part of like
- 1:40:40Speaker 10: our generation.
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: So who's the youngest person on this committee?
- 1:40:43Speaker 6: You probably Mike, I don't.
- 1:40:45Speaker 5: Know Phil, Bill, Phil, Phil Perry.
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: No.
- 1:40:49Speaker 6: And and there's a reason for that that makes total sense,
- 1:40:51Speaker 6: Like you guys have seen a lot more football than
- 1:40:53Speaker 6: somebody like me or whatever. But yeah, I just find
- 1:40:56Speaker 6: it interesting because there are the way that they structure it,
- 1:40:59Speaker 6: especially defensively, like they there are a lot of guys,
- 1:41:03Speaker 6: and this is what was a problem for Seymour, and
- 1:41:04Speaker 6: I think it's now a problem for Wilfork that we're
- 1:41:07Speaker 6: not production. Like you can't just look at a box
- 1:41:10Speaker 6: score and say this was their value because that wasn't
- 1:41:13Speaker 6: the type of role that they played. And I think
- 1:41:15Speaker 6: High Tower fits the same, but they don't build him
- 1:41:17Speaker 6: like high Tower anymore.
- 1:41:18Speaker 8: We got in.
- 1:41:20Speaker 6: They don't build guys like that anymore. It's disappointed out
- 1:41:23Speaker 6: a clicker There's nobody that like takes on blocks. There's
- 1:41:26Speaker 6: nobody that that brings the power like he does, like
- 1:41:29Speaker 6: they the linebackers in today's game are all like two
- 1:41:32Speaker 6: hundred and twenty five pounds, like they're running around that.
- 1:41:35Speaker 6: He was a throwback kind of guy. I miss players
- 1:41:38Speaker 6: like on.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: The Hall of Fame.
- 1:41:40Speaker 5: James Pettick grew the most interesting Patriots fan in the world.
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: Right, So question for Mike, if Brady had to go
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: to committee, how long would you have made him wait?
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: Well, now, at this point we a long wait.
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: Kyl and Pembroke says, I hate that only one player
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: goes into the Hall every year. We should increase the
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: number of finalists to ten and have the deciding factor
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: being a percentage of the vote, while the fans get
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: to vote on three people, so those who are deserving
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: get in, not just one, and the number who get
- 1:42:14Speaker 4: in are varied year to year.
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: I mean, it's not a terrible idea.
- 1:42:21Speaker 6: Ed eighty plus percent, you're in.
- 1:42:23Speaker 7: I don't hate it, and we're going to give you
- 1:42:25Speaker 7: a ten finalist. You can only vote for three, and
- 1:42:28Speaker 7: then it needs.
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: To be a threshold. I don't hate that idea.
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: I think even if you keep it at one.
- 1:42:33Speaker 10: I think the mistake was obviously, like you're already waving
- 1:42:36Speaker 10: the four year eligibility for Brady. It was kind of
- 1:42:39Speaker 10: shortsighted to maybe say, like, that's the only one that's
- 1:42:42Speaker 10: going to go in just because of all the new
- 1:42:44Speaker 10: Dynasty Wave players coming in, and it created this backlog.
- 1:42:47Speaker 7: No, so I take a little blame slash responsibility because
- 1:42:53Speaker 7: it was kind of my it was. I mean, I'm
- 1:42:56Speaker 7: not going to say that was my idea to have
- 1:42:57Speaker 7: the whole, like the whole Brad in it, because it's.
- 1:42:59Speaker 3: Not like it was brain Wave the four year.
- 1:43:02Speaker 7: Matt no Socks and I we had a long conversation
- 1:43:05Speaker 7: about this and we all agree like it's kind of.
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: Silly that we're going to have Brady go through the
- 1:43:10Speaker 3: same process.
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: As everybody else, and I agree with that.
- 1:43:12Speaker 7: What I wanted to do, however, put to in that
- 1:43:15Speaker 7: year Bingo, I wanted to have the regular committee meet
- 1:43:19Speaker 7: and get together have three nominees. And it wasn't because
- 1:43:23Speaker 7: I was thinking of Adam. I was just thinking Brady's different.
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: You're already changing the rule for Brady.
- 1:43:28Speaker 7: Well, let's just have the regular roy That year, talking
- 1:43:31Speaker 7: to some people part of it was sort of not
- 1:43:37Speaker 7: knowing when we might get Brady here for the summer,
- 1:43:40Speaker 7: Like it wasn't a foregone conclusion that it was going
- 1:43:43Speaker 7: to be Brady Night in June.
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: The way it was.
- 1:43:47Speaker 7: That's kind of the way that Fred, Matt and I
- 1:43:50Speaker 7: when we originally I'm not speaking out of turn here, right,
- 1:43:53Speaker 7: like that's we kind of spearheaded this, right, I don't remember,
- 1:43:57Speaker 7: I'm going to take credit for it. If Fred doesn't remember,
- 1:43:59Speaker 7: I'm going to take credit. But we we always envisioned
- 1:44:03Speaker 7: it kind of going down the way it did. I
- 1:44:05Speaker 7: didn't know it was going to be June twelfth and
- 1:44:07Speaker 7: all that stuff.
- 1:44:07Speaker 10: I think it was discussed on this show my first
- 1:44:10Speaker 10: year here, like you have to do it big, like
- 1:44:12Speaker 10: Larry Bird.
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: I remember those conversations on the show.
- 1:44:15Speaker 10: Something that was even like Paul planned legitimately up upstairs we.
- 1:44:21Speaker 4: Talked about it, and I definitely spearheaded that we use
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: Larry Bird as an example that it has to be
- 1:44:26Speaker 4: at least and that wasn't has to go to any
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: meetings again at least that big, if not bigger, and
- 1:44:32Speaker 4: I think we knocked it out of the park.
- 1:44:34Speaker 5: I think it was bigger and better.
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: That was one of the It was absolutely better.
- 1:44:38Speaker 6: That was one career. That was definitely the best event
- 1:44:40Speaker 6: I've ever gotten to work probably ever will Yeah, it was,
- 1:44:44Speaker 6: I mean better than the super Bowl maybe because of
- 1:44:46Speaker 6: the way the game went right, better than the super Bowl,
- 1:44:49Speaker 6: Like it was it was for me too, I mean
- 1:44:51Speaker 6: perfect night it was.
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: It was freaking awesome.
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: I mean all the little moment, yeah, I mean.
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: Everything.
- 1:44:59Speaker 9: When do you get a chance to like really celebrate
- 1:45:02Speaker 9: that whole run, you know like that you just you don't.
- 1:45:04Speaker 9: It's all kind of happens within little spurts of championships
- 1:45:08Speaker 9: or super Bowl losses or you know those things.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: But to get there and just like, hey, that was awesome,
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: Like what.
- 1:45:16Speaker 5: Even I know, that was pretty good, but like all
- 1:45:22Speaker 5: the players were great, yea, all the Mike Turrico was great.
- 1:45:26Speaker 5: Everything was just perfect.
- 1:45:28Speaker 9: Like Evan said, yeah, the Randy Moss moment when the
- 1:45:30Speaker 9: crowd just exploded him and now that was.
- 1:45:32Speaker 6: What I meant Like that that season and O seven,
- 1:45:35Speaker 6: I know.
- 1:45:35Speaker 9: It wasn't his last season, but it ended and it
- 1:45:37Speaker 9: was stunk, and you know, it was not completely unlike
- 1:45:40Speaker 9: this year. I know they weren't undefeated, but it felt
- 1:45:42Speaker 9: like you're having a magical run and then all of
- 1:45:43Speaker 9: a sudden the rug just gets.
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: Pulled out from under you.
- 1:45:46Speaker 9: But to have a chance to acknowledge Randy Moss for
- 1:45:50Speaker 9: what he did here, and you know, I don't know
- 1:45:51Speaker 9: if he's ever probably not going to make it into
- 1:45:53Speaker 9: the Patriots Hall of Fame, but he certainly is.
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: A famous player that played here and you know was
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: a joy to watch.
- 1:45:59Speaker 5: Did he get in the Patriots Hall of Fame?
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: Whossa didn't do a long enough? I agree, Yeah, that's
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: just again my opinion.
- 1:46:06Speaker 5: I agree.
- 1:46:07Speaker 6: I think if there's a time period where twenty years
- 1:46:09Speaker 6: from now we kind of don't have run out.
- 1:46:14Speaker 5: In that year, that's all.
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: But Britain didn't school that night, I like was just
- 1:46:19Speaker 6: a it was almost like cathartic Brendon I said, I
- 1:46:24Speaker 6: said it wrong, all of the loose ends because obviously
- 1:46:27Speaker 6: build like say, get fired now gets leaves, And it
- 1:46:33Speaker 6: was you know, Brady also left kind of during COVID
- 1:46:36Speaker 6: in the middle of you know, a weird time frame
- 1:46:39Speaker 6: and it's like closure. Yeah, it was like it was
- 1:46:43Speaker 6: a storybook ending.
- 1:46:43Speaker 9: Honestly, well and you didn't realize, but it was kind
- 1:46:45Speaker 9: of closure with with Brady to something sense.
- 1:46:48Speaker 8: You know he was.
- 1:46:50Speaker 6: Him now he doesn't have a dog in the fight.
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: Dude's back for the statue. That's it.
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:46:54Speaker 6: In the preseason game.
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: Uh, Zach spelled z Ac from Western Pennsylvania. You get
- 1:47:02Speaker 4: a lot of emails about the umpiring and balls of strikes,
- 1:47:06Speaker 4: says I've never liked watching baseball, but I'm loving the debate.
- 1:47:08Speaker 4: It's far more entertaining than any game I've tried to
- 1:47:11Speaker 4: watch for those of us who don't watch. Is a
- 1:47:14Speaker 4: strike meant to be a pitch that could be swung
- 1:47:16Speaker 4: at and hit by that batter.
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: Or just a pitch that's over the plate?
- 1:47:20Speaker 4: Wouldn't it be possible to find either one and program
- 1:47:23Speaker 4: that into the technology? Side note, seems to be an
- 1:47:26Speaker 4: increase in Zach's on the show, and it inspired me
- 1:47:28Speaker 4: to write, nice. That's kind of my philosophical like, whatever
- 1:47:31Speaker 4: you want to strike, what does the program that in?
- 1:47:35Speaker 6: What is a strike I.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: You should be able to hit? Or is it just
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: over the plate?
- 1:47:41Speaker 11: Like?
- 1:47:42Speaker 6: Good point?
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: Uh Jack in uh Jack Pantos fan.
- 1:47:47Speaker 17: Uh.
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: The agregious call that lost a picture of perfect game
- 1:47:50Speaker 4: was the flagrantly incorrect call of a of safe at
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: first base. That would have been the twenty seventh out
- 1:47:56Speaker 4: of Armando garyl. Gala perfect game against the Yankees.
- 1:48:00Speaker 3: We talked the Yankees.
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: Galarraga retired the next batter.
- 1:48:05Speaker 4: That game is now enshrined at Cooper Cooperstown is the
- 1:48:08Speaker 4: only twenty eight out perfect game in Major League history.
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: With tears in his eyes, the umpire apologized to Galarraga
- 1:48:15Speaker 4: at home plate before the game.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: The next day.
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: Conspiracy theorists speculates that the ump received a phone call
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: between innings late in the game when the perfect game
- 1:48:25Speaker 4: appeared possible, and called safe at first base because the
- 1:48:28Speaker 4: lowly Detroit Tigers cannot be allowed to pitch a perfect
- 1:48:31Speaker 4: game against the mighty Yankees.
- 1:48:34Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a great conspiracy theory. The team that you
- 1:48:38Speaker 7: think was involved in the conspiracy wasn't playing in the game.
- 1:48:42Speaker 7: It was Detroit against Cleveland.
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: So much for that then.
- 1:48:47Speaker 7: But yeah, Alex brought that up earlier in the show,
- 1:48:50Speaker 7: and yeah, Jim Joyce, I believe is the umpire's name,
- 1:48:54Speaker 7: and that yet did Alex is right? That really bothered
- 1:48:57Speaker 7: him that he missed that call. I mean, it was
- 1:49:00Speaker 7: an egregiously bad call. I don't really know how we missed.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: It spiin Fresno.
- 1:49:05Speaker 4: Fred seems largely correct that a single players strike zone
- 1:49:08Speaker 4: could be set objectively from one at bat to the next,
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: but the strike zone would also have to change within
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: and at bet as the player just a stance.
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: No has nothing to do with his stance.
- 1:49:18Speaker 3: I agree with Fred on that.
- 1:49:19Speaker 4: It seems reasonable that the technology could eventually achieve that
- 1:49:23Speaker 4: precise morphing a good direction unless one values tradition over
- 1:49:27Speaker 4: accuracy like Paul does. But I picked the knit here.
- 1:49:30Speaker 4: Paul's love of tradition is no less artificial than an
- 1:49:32Speaker 4: accurate artificial intelligence. Wanting human eyes on the game just
- 1:49:36Speaker 4: because their human eyes is a highly artificial approach to
- 1:49:40Speaker 4: something that is supposedly rules based. Both are artificial, but
- 1:49:43Speaker 4: one has the benefit of being right.
- 1:49:46Speaker 5: Okay, I don't know what.
- 1:49:48Speaker 6: I don't really know.
- 1:49:52Speaker 7: There's nothing wrong with that that email, that argument, I
- 1:49:55Speaker 7: just I would just take it. I would just take
- 1:49:57Speaker 7: a slight exception to the fact that you think so
- 1:50:02Speaker 7: therefore you are right. Your side is what you believe,
- 1:50:07Speaker 7: and that is the only side to you. That's what
- 1:50:10Speaker 7: I would take exception to. And the whole thing about
- 1:50:12Speaker 7: the strike zone with every batter right.
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:50:16Speaker 7: So, like Fred's point is, just get rid of the
- 1:50:18Speaker 7: umpire altogether and you don't have to worry about the
- 1:50:20Speaker 7: umpire changing from batter to batter right.
- 1:50:23Speaker 5: Yep?
- 1:50:23Speaker 3: Is that accurately? Yeah, maybe I'd like it better if
- 1:50:26Speaker 3: that's what they did.
- 1:50:28Speaker 4: Joe and Michigan says, the more rules you make, the
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: more difficult it is to manage the rules. Major League
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: Baseball's rule book is one hundred and sixty five pages,
- 1:50:38Speaker 4: NFL seventy nine, NBA sixty seven, FIFA one hundred and
- 1:50:42Speaker 4: forty three. Wow, how does soccer have that many rules?
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: That's crazy. You can't touch the ball with your hands, that's.
- 1:50:50Speaker 3: That's more rules. I've had goals scored in the history
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: of the World Cup.
- 1:50:53Speaker 6: Oh my goodness. So speaking about the World may because
- 1:50:56Speaker 6: it's the oldest game. Italy to qualify for the World
- 1:51:01Speaker 6: Cup for the third straight time, I mean, that's like,
- 1:51:07Speaker 6: what's going on there?
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: Scozy to not call some of your boys, I mean,
- 1:51:17Speaker 3: did you see? Did you see what we wound?
- 1:51:19Speaker 14: All?
- 1:51:20Speaker 3: Right? Then?
- 1:51:21Speaker 6: With a bunch of kids from New Jersey Italian Americans
- 1:51:25Speaker 6: playing for a team.
- 1:51:26Speaker 7: Great Weissert doesn't doesn't scream to uh.
- 1:51:30Speaker 4: Matt, and Wichita says, I side with Paul, Yeah, to
- 1:51:34Speaker 4: side with Paul a bit. There is a level of
- 1:51:36Speaker 4: There is a level of depth that is now lost
- 1:51:39Speaker 4: in baseball. I played catcher in high school, and how
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: the ump called balls and strikes absolutely affected how we
- 1:51:45Speaker 4: were going to pitch that day.
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: In high school, the yumps might be off.
- 1:51:48Speaker 4: By six inches instead of point five, but to me,
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: it was just part of the game that the batter
- 1:51:53Speaker 4: and the catcher slash pitcher had to adapt to right.
- 1:51:56Speaker 4: You had to because they weren't accurate.
- 1:52:01Speaker 5: I get it, And.
- 1:52:03Speaker 4: Matt also says, the one thing I love I'm trying
- 1:52:06Speaker 4: the one thing I love about the baseball review is
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: that it's fast.
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: I wish we could.
- 1:52:11Speaker 4: I wish we could get more of the Baseball level
- 1:52:13Speaker 4: of speed into football. When it is fast like how
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: baseball is, it doesn't take away from the fan experience
- 1:52:19Speaker 4: that much. In some of the games, the crowd gets
- 1:52:21Speaker 4: into the reviews. I think the fans enjoy heckling OMPs
- 1:52:24Speaker 4: when they're wrong. It all feeds into the experience. Football
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: reviews are so slow compared to what baseball is doing.
- 1:52:30Speaker 4: If it's clear and obvious. Why can't a football review
- 1:52:33Speaker 4: just be nearly instant, because.
- 1:52:35Speaker 6: It's not like football, Like you, if you're challenging, like
- 1:52:39Speaker 6: in or out of bounds, you have to use the
- 1:52:41Speaker 6: human eye to tell whether this is a computer that's
- 1:52:44Speaker 6: literally just zapping down to the umpire and saying in
- 1:52:47Speaker 6: the case.
- 1:52:47Speaker 5: Of balls and strikes.
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: But I will say to counter that, there's some baseball
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: ones that are so long.
- 1:52:53Speaker 6: Right, the ones take forever, right because they have to
- 1:52:57Speaker 6: go frame by frame and they have, you know, look
- 1:52:59Speaker 6: at it just like they do in football. This is
- 1:53:01Speaker 6: an artificial computer that's just saying.
- 1:53:04Speaker 3: Yeah, have been quick.
- 1:53:04Speaker 7: The balls and strikes overturned enough, they have been quick.
- 1:53:07Speaker 6: But the game the other day with C. B. Buckner
- 1:53:10Speaker 6: took four hours because of the stupid reviews. I was like,
- 1:53:12Speaker 6: this is unbelievab.
- 1:53:13Speaker 7: And I don't know if this is accurate, but I
- 1:53:15Speaker 7: saw something after that game, and this was an egregiously bad,
- 1:53:18Speaker 7: you know, poorly officiated game. He missed twelve balls and
- 1:53:21Speaker 7: strikes in the game. That's considered like unbelievably bad. Twelve
- 1:53:27Speaker 7: out of what two hundred and fifty pitches he missed twelve,
- 1:53:32Speaker 7: well all time, that were no no, no, right, no, he.
- 1:53:35Speaker 3: Missed twelve balls and strikes and.
- 1:53:37Speaker 5: The oh they went back and looked, yeah, okay.
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: Cool again. I don't. I didn't study it. Maybe you're
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: right like I don't.
- 1:53:44Speaker 6: It's nerd stuff they do with computers.
- 1:53:46Speaker 7: Yeah, according to the computer, every pitch evaluated, he missed twelve.
- 1:53:50Speaker 5: Miss twelve.
- 1:53:51Speaker 7: They agreed, like that's that's that's really, that's like exceptionally best.
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: Twelve too many, that's.
- 1:53:56Speaker 3: Ex but that is like the extreme bad.
- 1:54:00Speaker 6: Yeah, they've been doing that for years that they have
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: the computer like goes and U grades the umpires and
- 1:54:07Speaker 6: then they hold the umpires accountable, supposedly for being wrong.
- 1:54:12Speaker 4: They should rock little subtle Eric in Rochester, New York,
- 1:54:19Speaker 4: after slogging my way through the Major League Baseball Challenge
- 1:54:22Speaker 4: discussion without jumping in front of busy traffic, I'm sorry.
- 1:54:26Speaker 4: Paul mentioned something that made me think, what is everyone's
- 1:54:29Speaker 4: favorite sports arguments to have? I'm friends with a few lawyers,
- 1:54:33Speaker 4: so arguing is always what we're doing, but some of
- 1:54:35Speaker 4: our best always revolved around whether Brady was a system
- 1:54:39Speaker 4: quarterback or not. What are everyone's favorite or most enjoyable
- 1:54:43Speaker 4: sports arguments to partake it?
- 1:54:45Speaker 6: I mean, that's a dumb argument, like how many systems
- 1:54:47Speaker 6: did you play it?
- 1:54:48Speaker 4: You have dumb friends, like dumb lawyer friends. I'm glad
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: if I ever need a lawyer, I'm not calling your friends.
- 1:54:53Speaker 6: Like the team and O seven was running a much
- 1:54:55Speaker 6: different offense of the team and eleven to the team
- 1:54:58Speaker 6: in fourteen through eighteen, like those are all different iterations
- 1:55:01Speaker 6: of the same anyways, the one that I love the
- 1:55:05Speaker 6: most is like the eras of athletes, like if you
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: were to put like Bill Russell and Bob Kozy in
- 1:55:11Speaker 6: the NBA today, like would they hold up? Would they
- 1:55:14Speaker 6: be good, you know, or would they be like out
- 1:55:17Speaker 6: of the league, you know, like not even competitive?
- 1:55:19Speaker 4: And I think I love that argument too. But the
- 1:55:22Speaker 4: thing that sometimes gets lost in that you have to
- 1:55:25Speaker 4: be fair and say Bill Russell born today gets the
- 1:55:28Speaker 4: same nutrition and the same training, the same everything, and
- 1:55:31Speaker 4: then I just.
- 1:55:33Speaker 5: I just drop him in.
- 1:55:35Speaker 6: No, I think Bill Russell would still be good no
- 1:55:37Speaker 6: matter what, because because especially the way the game is
- 1:55:39Speaker 6: played now, like.
- 1:55:40Speaker 5: Well he's old and he's dead, well as the older
- 1:55:44Speaker 5: he dead.
- 1:55:45Speaker 6: And somebody else somebody always makes that joke when you
- 1:55:50Speaker 6: bring up this, Oh my god, the way the game
- 1:55:54Speaker 6: is played now, Like you know, I look at like
- 1:55:57Speaker 6: Nimi Kita on the Celtics, Like Bill Russell's just like
- 1:56:00Speaker 6: much better version of that, right because all that guy's
- 1:56:02Speaker 6: doing is running the floor, blocking shots and catching lobs.
- 1:56:06Speaker 6: Bill Russell would be amazing at that, Like he had
- 1:56:08Speaker 6: tracker speed, you know level speed he jumped out of
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: the gym. Bob Coosey, on the other hand, I think
- 1:56:14Speaker 6: the coups would be would have a tough time.
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: The tallest cos he's not very big.
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: You don't think just around with your right hand constant.
- 1:56:22Speaker 9: But I was like the old hockey guys, like no
- 1:56:24Speaker 9: one training in the off season. Everybody's like smoking butts between.
- 1:56:27Speaker 3: Shifts, like you know, it's there the one.
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: I mean, I know that no athletes too much context.
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: There's you know, there is an element of that.
- 1:56:33Speaker 5: So what do you think, like the humans just weren't
- 1:56:35Speaker 5: as good back then?
- 1:56:36Speaker 6: Yes, okay, Like like people so people use this argument,
- 1:56:40Speaker 6: right and they're like, oh, like if you put you know,
- 1:56:42Speaker 6: a player in football from the nineteen set, like in
- 1:56:45Speaker 6: the nineteen seventies, offensive linemen were like two hundred and
- 1:56:47Speaker 6: sixty five pounds, like now a guy on average is
- 1:56:51Speaker 6: three twenty. Right, So like if you put I love
- 1:56:54Speaker 6: John Hannon, is that well evolution but ect But like
- 1:56:57Speaker 6: if you put guys from that chicken from that era,
- 1:57:01Speaker 6: I guess like maybe if they beefed up or whatever
- 1:57:04Speaker 6: and got into these programs and became three hundred and
