- 0:00Speaker 1: The Crews of the Noah's Bark by David cory Man overboard,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Wake up, wake up and sing your song as we
- 0:13Speaker 1: roll merrily along above the meadow, sings the lark. So
- 0:19Speaker 1: let us sing aboard the ark. There goes the weather cock,
- 0:25Speaker 1: cooed the dove, flying over to the porthole and looking
- 0:29Speaker 1: out over the bright ocean. Tell him I'll get up
- 0:33Speaker 1: in a minute, yawned Marcherie. So the dove, who slept
- 0:39Speaker 1: in Marjorie's cabin in a pretty gilt cage, spoke to
- 0:43Speaker 1: the weather cock, after which she commenced to sing. There's
- 0:49Speaker 1: a robin in the woodland, there's a robin in the sea.
- 0:53Speaker 1: But they are just as different as different an be.
- 0:57Speaker 1: The one that's in the forest has and a tail.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The one that's in the ocean has a scaly coat
- 1:05Speaker 1: of nail. The robin in the forest could never take
- 1:09Speaker 1: a swim. The robin of the ocean could never fly
- 1:13Speaker 1: or skim across a grassy meadow, nor fly a binner tree.
- 1:19Speaker 1: But he can do all kinds of stunts within the
- 1:22Speaker 1: deep blue sea. Where did you learn all that? Asked Bargerie,
- 1:28Speaker 1: pulling on her stockings. Listen, listen, there's another verse and
- 1:33Speaker 1: maybe two or three, cooed the dove, and then she
- 1:38Speaker 1: began to sing again. The robin of the Woodland has
- 1:43Speaker 1: a pretty crimson vest. He sings a merry, blessome song
- 1:48Speaker 1: and builds a cozy nest. The robin of the Ocean
- 1:52Speaker 1: has fins that look like wings. He doesn't build a
- 1:56Speaker 1: nest at all. He grunts but never sings. Yet both
- 2:00Speaker 1: of them are robins, as some of us have heard.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Although the ocean onan's a fish, the woodland on's a
- 2:08Speaker 1: bird cock. A little do growed the weathercock as the
- 2:13Speaker 1: dove finished her song. Hurrah for you you are the
- 2:18Speaker 1: poet of the Ark. Oh no, replied the modest little dove.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That is not my own. My mother taught me that
- 2:28Speaker 1: song when I was a Dovelet is that? So? Said
- 2:33Speaker 1: the weather cocking. He gave a sigh of relief, for
- 2:38Speaker 1: I guess he wanted to be the only poet on
- 2:41Speaker 1: board the Ark and sing his little songs every morning,
- 2:46Speaker 1: just as he had always done. By this time, Marcherie
- 2:50Speaker 1: was dressed, and, taking the dove on her shoulder, went
- 2:54Speaker 1: down to the dining room. As usual, the Noah boys
- 2:59Speaker 1: were on and with great and glorious appetites. How are
- 3:05Speaker 1: the animals this morning, inquired Captain Noah, helping himself to
- 3:10Speaker 1: a big saucer of Hotemea. Pretty well, answered Jeffeth. Some
- 3:16Speaker 1: of the insects are getting restless, said ham. I should
- 3:21Speaker 1: say so, exclaimed missus Noah. Here's that big red aunt
- 3:26Speaker 1: in the sugar bull. Catch him, cried Shemp. We ought
- 3:31Speaker 1: to put him back where he belongs. But the aunt
- 3:35Speaker 1: all of a sudden crawled out of the sugar bull
- 3:38Speaker 1: and ran down the leg of the table and out
- 3:42Speaker 1: on the deck. There he goes, shouted Margery, quick or
- 3:47Speaker 1: he'll get away, cried Captain Noah. I can't afford to
- 3:51Speaker 1: lose a single passenger. Instantly, the boys darted after the
- 3:56Speaker 1: fleeing insect, but just as they were about to snatch
- 4:01Speaker 1: him up from the deck, a wave washed him overboard.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Man overboard, shouted the weather cock, and my goodness, what
- 4:13Speaker 1: a commotion there was. After that, all the animals rushed
- 4:19Speaker 1: up on deck to sea who had fallen into the ocean.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Throw a life preserver, yelled mister Jonah. And in the
- 4:28Speaker 1: second ham unfastened a large horse collar life preserver and
- 4:34Speaker 1: tossed it into the ocean. Suppose he can't reach it,
- 4:39Speaker 1: said the elephant. I guess i'd better jump in and
- 4:43Speaker 1: save him. And overboard went the big animal with a
- 4:48Speaker 1: loud splash. Where is he asked the elephant, after looking
- 4:55Speaker 1: around in vain for the ant, O, I can't see,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and no wonder, for the sea was rough and it
- 5:06Speaker 1: was no easy matter to find so small a passenger.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Get my telescope, yelled Captain Noah. I think it's in
- 5:16Speaker 1: my workbasket, said Missus Noah to Ham, who started at
- 5:21Speaker 1: once to obey his father's command. If it isn't, it
- 5:26Speaker 1: may be in your tool chest. I think you had
- 5:30Speaker 1: it the other day when you were going to make
- 5:32Speaker 1: an anti aircraft gun out of it for your toy army.
- 5:36Speaker 1: That's where I found it, said Ham. A minute later,
- 5:40Speaker 1: appearing breathless with the telescope wear abouts, screamed the elephant,
- 5:47Speaker 1: who was now some distance from the ark. Wait a minute,
- 5:52Speaker 1: can't you, yelled Captain Noah. I've got to adjust the thing.
- 5:57Speaker 1: These boys have been meddling with it. When this was
- 6:01Speaker 1: finally done, Captain Noah slept the sea with his glass,
- 6:07Speaker 1: but in vain, the form of the poor ant was
- 6:12Speaker 1: nowhere to be seen. Shiver my timbers, said Captain Noah
- 6:17Speaker 1: under his breath. What will happen to me if I
- 6:20Speaker 1: lose a passenger? Hurry up, gasped the elephant, now thoroughly
- 6:26Speaker 1: worn out by the buffeting of the waves. Hurry up,
- 6:31Speaker 1: almost in Well, we'll have to get you out, then,
- 6:35Speaker 1: answered Captain Noah. Swim around to the fort side, said Ham,
- 6:41Speaker 1: we'll hoist you up by the davits. I hate to
- 6:45Speaker 1: give up looking for the aunt, said the elephant, as
- 6:48Speaker 1: he slipped the ropes under his big body, and then,
- 6:54Speaker 1: after much tugging and hauling away on the ropes, he
- 6:59Speaker 1: was lifted up even with the deck. But beyond this
- 7:05Speaker 1: it was impossible to do anything. The davits refused to
- 7:12Speaker 1: swing in, being hindered by the immense size of the animal.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Put your trunk on a deck, suggested mister Jonah. That
- 7:22Speaker 1: will make you way less and perhaps we can roll
- 7:25Speaker 1: you over the edge. Yes, that's a good idea, said Sham.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Put your baggage aboard first. This is no time for joking.
- 7:36Speaker 1: We have lost one passenger and are in danger of
- 7:40Speaker 1: losing another. It will look very strange to lose the
- 7:44Speaker 1: largest and the smallest on the same day, said poor
- 7:49Speaker 1: Captain Noah, despairingly. Well. Just then Missus Elephant came up
- 7:56Speaker 1: from the hold. She had overslept herself and had only
- 8:02Speaker 1: now heard the commotion on deck. On seeing her mate
- 8:07Speaker 1: swinging from the davits, she sat up a loud trumpeting.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Good gracious Ella, said the elephant. Don't carry on like that.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Screaming won't get me out. Get hold of me and
- 8:23Speaker 1: help pull. This was good advice, and pretty soon mister
- 8:30Speaker 1: Elephant was landed safely on board the ark. Just then
- 8:36Speaker 1: the weathercock called out that he could see the little
- 8:39Speaker 1: red ant on the life preserver. Thank goodness, exclaimed Captain Noah,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and the ark was turned in the direction pointed out
- 8:51Speaker 1: by the faithful lookout. Then mister Jonah leaned over and
- 8:57Speaker 1: pulled in the life preserver as the ark slowly came
- 9:01Speaker 1: a long side, and just in the nick of time,
- 9:06Speaker 1: for the poor aunt was nearly dead. Give him to me,
- 9:12Speaker 1: said Missus Noah. A little Jamaica ginger in a warm
- 9:17Speaker 1: blanket will bring him round. I guess well, well, exclaimed
- 9:23Speaker 1: Captain Noah, as the motherly form of Missus Noah disappeared
- 9:29Speaker 1: down the companion way, this has been an exciting warning.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And then he wiped his forehead with his red bordered
- 9:39Speaker 1: handkerchief and looked about him. All you animals go below deck,
- 9:45Speaker 1: he commanded, or else we'll have somebody else overboard. So
- 9:52Speaker 1: missus Elephant led mister Elephant, who was wet to the
- 9:57Speaker 1: skin and shivering with the coal, down to the hold,
- 10:02Speaker 1: where she put him to bed, with a hot water
- 10:06Speaker 1: bag at his feet and a woolen nightcap on his head.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Are you going to put this down in your log book?
- 10:15Speaker 1: Asked Marjorie. I think it will make a very interesting story,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and I've heard from old sailors that they always put
- 10:25Speaker 1: down everything that happens in their log book. Of course
- 10:30Speaker 1: I will, answered Captain Noah. Bring me the log book, Jaffeth,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you haven't done anything this morning. Suppose you jot it down.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I declare, I'm all tuckered out with excitement and worry.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You'd better lie down and rest, father, said Missus Noah,
- 10:52Speaker 1: coming up on deck. I have the aunt very comfortable now,
- 10:57Speaker 1: and I feel sure he will record cover in a
- 11:00Speaker 1: short time. So Captain Noah went below to rest, and
- 11:08Speaker 1: the little dove perched herself on Marjorie's shoulder, and watched
- 11:14Speaker 1: Captain Noah's son write in the log book. And what
- 11:19Speaker 1: do you suppose he wrote, Well, it was something like this,
- 11:26Speaker 1: for the little dove told me afterwards. The little red
- 11:31Speaker 1: ant fell into the sea, but oh dear you, and
- 11:35Speaker 1: oh dear me, and then the elephant, with a shout,
- 11:40Speaker 1: jumped in and tried to pull him out. But he
- 11:45Speaker 1: wasn't saved by the elephant. It was mister Jonah who
- 11:50Speaker 1: saved the aunt. And in the next chapter I'll tell
- 11:55Speaker 1: you more about Marjorie on board the Ark. End of
- 12:02Speaker 1: chapter five
