- 0:00Here's a question I have for you.

- 0:56immeasurable. So welcome to Beyond the Facade.
- 0:59Let's get started. I just want to say I'm going to
- 1:04completely let go of the outcome of this podcast.
- 1:06There's a part of me saying that this could be like any other
- 1:09podcast and just be regular or this could trigger the heck out
- 1:13of some people. And I'm not just talking even
- 1:15betrayed partners. I'm talking about guys in
- 1:18recovery or people in recovery, I should say.
- 1:21I know I would have had strong feelings about it to begin with.
- 1:24I would have had what I believed and I would have challenged some
- 1:27maybe some things that I believe.
- 1:28So just notice what comes up for you.
- 1:31And if you have things you further want to know, just shoot
- 1:35us a note and say, Hey, talk about this some more or feel
- 1:38free to challenge if you want challenge.
- 1:40That's a, that's a perfectly acceptable thing to be doing.
- 1:43And I also want to just say that for myself, I'm working through
- 1:47this myself. So this concept for me, it feels
- 1:51like it really matters. In fact, the reason I'm
- 1:53recording this podcast is I just got done with one of my men's
- 1:56groups and one of the participants brought this
- 1:58concept up and, and they were talking about it with their
- 2:02therapist. And I just think it's valid and
- 2:04it matters and there can be stuff that comes up with it.
- 2:07OK, let me just dig into it. I just put the asterisks with
- 2:10it. There's AI think this podcast
- 2:13for me is often feels very unscripted.
- 2:16Not a lot of editing happens here.
- 2:17And the kind of feels like that's the way it needs to be
- 2:20because it is called beyond the facade.
- 2:22So if there's a lot of script and a lot of editing and it's
- 2:24kind of like feels like it did lose the purpose.
- 2:28So anyway, I'll let go of the outcome.
- 2:30Here we go. All right, so here's the thought
- 2:33that I have for you. Like if you've been stuck in
- 2:35like recovery or stuck in like addiction or compulsive
- 2:38behavior, and you've wondered why, why you keep repeating the
- 2:41same behavior, Like why do I keep doing this?
- 2:44And your partner's asking you questions like, do you love me?
- 2:47Or how, why in the hell would you do this?
- 2:50What were you thinking? How could you do this?
- 2:53You're not alone. So in in this episode today,
- 2:56we're going to explore like this word, if you've never heard of
- 2:59it, these words, what free will really is.
- 3:03So I'm going to define it and we're going to talk why some
- 3:06people believe in it and why other people don't, and the
- 3:09extremes in both cases and what it has to be in place, what has
- 3:14to be in place for free will, true choice to even be possible.
- 3:19And I think this can be the most transformational part.
- 3:22And maybe maybe that'll just be for me, like how important it
- 3:25feels. You can decide what that looks
- 3:26like for you and also how this all connects to like a
- 3:31compulsive behavior, the diction healing transformation.
- 3:34OK, so let's dive into it. Let's start with these two
- 3:37terms, free will and determinism.
- 3:40OK, so let's define it or give you, yeah, give you the
- 3:42definitions. So free will is the belief that
- 3:46we can make real choices, not just reactions, not just like
- 3:49habits, but we have the capacity to pause, to reflect and to go
- 3:55in a different way, Determinism and we can go really extreme
- 3:58with either of these free will, just complete choice, the
- 4:01ability. And then determinism, on the
- 4:04other hand, says everything we do is caused by something else,
- 4:09like whether it's trauma or environments or brain chemistry,
- 4:14the things that happened generational before this, our
- 4:16genetics, this thing that were handed down to us like just
- 4:20again, environment I want to highlight.
- 4:23And so from like that view of determinism, like addiction or
- 4:27compulsive behavior, that can make a lot of sense.
- 4:30Somebody might say it's not weak, it's the results of what
- 4:33happened to you. And this is where I think the
- 4:34triggers can come up. They're going to feel like a
- 4:36loss anyway. I'm not going to go there for a
- 4:38moment. So some, some people live in
- 4:40like 1 camp versus the other. Some people are like really far
- 4:44One Direction and really far the other way, which is, you know,
- 4:47no, you have choice. Like you have choice right now,
- 4:50just make it right. Like you are a completely
- 4:53controlled and the other ones are like, no, I don't have
- 4:55control. It is determined based upon all
- 4:57these things that are going on. We can live in tension between
- 5:00the two of this is something that we've been around a while
- 5:03for. We can live in the middle.
- 5:04So let's talk about why people disagree.
- 5:06So if you believe in free will, like recovery becomes like a
- 5:11call to action and you might be finding yourself saying I can
- 5:14make better choices. I do have the power.
- 5:17But why other people disagree is is it can also come from like
- 5:21shame when you don't have that. So you might be saying, if I
- 5:25could choose, why do I keep messing up?
- 5:29So if you don't believe in free will, you, you lean towards like
- 5:34determinism, then recovery becomes more of act of
- 5:37compassion. So of course I'm here, of course
- 5:42I've struggled, but it can also slide into like hopelessness.
- 5:45So if I didn't choose this, maybe I can't change it either.
- 5:49And that's why there's a lot of people, especially those of us
- 5:51who are working in like trauma informed care land in the
- 5:54middle. You were shaped by your past and
- 5:57you can shape your future. So I'm just going to, I kind of
- 6:00like highlighted that for just a second, those extremes.
- 6:03And I did like really fast. So let me slow it down.
- 6:06So there's this disagreement. I think early on I was talking
- 6:08about my own journey, whether it was faith-based, whether it was
- 6:11culture, It really felt like the free will experience.
- 6:14Like Luke, you're just not making a choice right now.
- 6:17I don't know if you would say get like, get your crap
- 6:19together, just try harder. Like you do have a choice.
- 6:23But then I did find myself floating to this, like this
- 6:26place of like, why am I acting like feeling like in those
- 6:31moments? And we talk about it all the
- 6:33time, like leaving their values based part of our brain into our
- 6:38survival part of our brain. I'm not going to use that
- 6:40language right now, but getting to the very end of the other
- 6:45side of the spectrum, which is like, shoot, maybe I don't have
- 6:47a choice. I've been trying this for a long
- 6:49time. And is this predetermined?
- 6:52Why do I keep struggling? Why do I keep messing up?
- 6:56Doctor Lemke talks about the broken hinge, like maybe my
- 6:59brain doesn't work the way it's supposed to work and why?
- 7:03And I just I guess I want to validate and have you notice if
- 7:07it was zero to 10 zero. I believe in free will, 10
- 7:10determinism. Like I don't have a choice.
- 7:12Everything's predetermined by my experiences, by my trauma, by my
- 7:16genetics, by my environment. Like what's going to happen not
- 7:20is going to happen. Just make sense.
- 7:23Make space for the in between here for a second.
- 7:27But what I find to be interesting is if we talk about
- 7:30what has to be in place for free will to exist, This is the part
- 7:34that I love the most. If I want to believe and if I
- 7:37choose to believe that free will is set, if I do have choice
- 7:42there, there's a number of things that have to be in place
- 7:46for that to exist because free will isn't automatic.
- 7:49This is what I believe. It has requirements.
- 7:53So if that's what I want to live in, right, If I do have choice,
- 7:56we can't negotiate with this part, right?
- 7:58So here's the things that have to exist.
- 8:00One, awareness. You can't choose what you can't
- 8:04see. So addiction narrows like or
- 8:07composed, We have narrows the minds.
- 8:09Recovery expands awareness, right?
- 8:12So you can actually see options. And that's only through
- 8:16awareness. That's why denial is the first
- 8:18part. First phase of the journey is
- 8:19coming out of denial. It's not just coming out of
- 8:21denial. It's coming into awareness,
- 8:23seeing things that I've never seen before, and obviously shame
- 8:26gets in the way of that. The more focus we are on other
- 8:29people and what they care about, what they think, we can't be an
- 8:31awareness, can't really learn about ourselves.
- 8:35OK, so awareness has to happen for free will to exist.
- 8:38The second thing that has to happen is a regulation.
- 8:41So like emotional regulation. So if you're emotionally
- 8:44flooded, you're overwhelmed, you're triggered, you're
- 8:46thinking, you're thinking, brain shuts down.
- 8:49When our body in those moments and it's in survival mode,
- 8:53there's no space for choice until regulation happens.
- 8:56And you'll just notice as I bring these in, one awareness 2
- 8:59regulation, I'll keep going here.
- 9:01Just notice like the very beginning, I wanted to say free
- 9:04will is what I want my world to consist of, that I do have
- 9:08choice, but I was lacking what recovery actually is.
- 9:12And I'm going through those awareness regulation.
- 9:15Here's the third one. It's understanding.
- 9:18So you need information, real honest understanding of what I'm
- 9:23going to call consequences, of how your behavior effects people
- 9:27and effects you effects other people, but not in a shaming
- 9:30way. I have to be educated and come
- 9:33in and understanding about what's actually happening and
- 9:35what's going on. Different than awareness, OK,
- 9:38Different than awareness. Understanding is really more
- 9:42about consequences because this is going to play into #5 and I
- 9:45have no idea whether I'm going too fast or not, whether you
- 9:48guys are mopping what I'm spilling right now or what's
- 9:50coming up for you. So you can give me that feedback
- 9:52some point. Here's the 4th one.
- 9:56For free will to exist, I'm going to call this.
- 10:00I don't feel like it's completely right.
- 10:03I don't like the wording on this so much, but freedom from
- 10:05coercion. So no one makes good decisions
- 10:08underneath pressure. OK, That includes internal
- 10:12coercion, like the voices that say you'll never be good enough,
- 10:16you're never going to get your crap together.
- 10:18So I'm not going to focus so much on the external voice.
- 10:20I'm going to focus on the internal voices, coercion, and
- 10:23you don't have choices. OK, so #5 and it kind of
- 10:26technically plays in the floor. Probably should keep these
- 10:29together. But anyway, that is what it is.
- 10:32There has to be a want to compared to I have to or I'm
- 10:36being forced to because that's why humans do what they do.
- 10:39Really, it's two pieces of this. It's I want to do it or I'm
- 10:43being made to do it. That's how we operate, right?
- 10:47And there has to be that want to in order for this to work.
- 10:52So when we say free will, we're not talking about forcing
- 10:55somebody to do better. We're talking about creating
- 10:59conditions where like real values align, choices become
- 11:04possible, right? That's what has to happen for
- 11:06free will. And I guess I want to just say
- 11:08when I sit with the betrayed partners, like whether it's in
- 11:10an intensive or when I get a chance to be a guest in a group
- 11:13and talk to them and they're asking questions about their
- 11:15betraying partner. Why did he do what he did?
- 11:18And they're saying, what brings me comfort, what brings me
- 11:20peace. I find it so interesting that
- 11:23what they're asking for is their partner to come into awareness,
- 11:26be able to emotionally regulate, being able to understand
- 11:29consequences. I think this freedom, concord
- 11:32and a little bit interesting because I think this is around
- 11:35the trauma brain, the traumatized brain that they
- 11:39there can't be the pressure to focus on somebody else.
- 11:42I recognize that's a little bit nuanced, but this desire, this
- 11:46want to is what makes it sustainable.
- 11:49Even though for a period of time I have to or I'm being forced to
- 11:54can work. The desire really is the place
- 11:58the free will thrives, my ability to make a choice.
- 12:02So I'm just giving you some reframes with this.
- 12:05Recovery reframes with free will.
- 12:07If this is hitting for you here, here's what I I, I want to be
- 12:11able to get out of this and maybe I want it for you.
- 12:13I don't know. So recovery isn't about
- 12:17pretending you had control. It's about restoring your
- 12:22ability to be able to choose. You don't get to choose what
- 12:25you've gone through. You don't get to pick your
- 12:27previous experiences, even generational past the stuff that
- 12:31was handed down to you, like about what you were taught or
- 12:33genetically. You don't get to choose that
- 12:35stuff right. You don't technically choose to
- 12:39numb out at age 12 because you didn't have the awareness of
- 12:43running out of that was going to impact you.
- 12:45You didn't have the knowledge. You didn't choose to internalize
- 12:49that you were unworthy, you were broken or dangerous.
- 12:51But here's what you can choose. Here's what you can choose to
- 12:55kind of move into that direction.
- 12:57You can get curious and you can pause before reacting.
- 13:03You can do these things to create those five pieces that
- 13:06allow free will to exist. My ability to be able to choose.
- 13:09But it doesn't just happen. Like it doesn't just happen,
- 13:12right? So yeah, I think there's a part
- 13:16of me that really wants to know for you how this hits.
- 13:18So hopefully I get a chance to in some way or another.
- 13:21And I just want to say thank you for those of you who get a
- 13:24chance to weigh in on these podcasts and say, hey, this is
- 13:26how this impacted me, good or bad or ugly.
- 13:29I'm really enjoying the fact that we get people to say, hey,
- 13:31elaborate on this. So I find that to be rewarding.
- 13:34So thank you for those those pieces and just excited and have
- 13:39dialogue with you more about this.
- 13:40Let me know if there's just something more that you want to
- 13:42go through on this would be important to take the
- 13:45conversation further. OK, so let me just give you some
- 13:48questions before I leave you with this.
- 13:50So let me ask you a few questions you can sit with
- 13:52today. Do you believe in free will?
- 13:55Why or why not? Are you more determinism?
- 13:58Here's another prompt for you to just kind of noodle on.
- 14:00Can you noodle? Let's think about it.
- 14:02Some people I found out in different parts of country,
- 14:05that's not the verbage they use. Here's the next prompt.
- 14:07Can you remember a moment when it didn't feel like you had a
- 14:10choice? OK.
- 14:12Can you remember a moment in your recovery when you did
- 14:15choose something different? And what was the environment
- 14:18that made that happen? So the point of today's episode
- 14:21isn't necessarily that like want to land on a debate with this,
- 14:24if it would even create one, is the more open up to new thought
- 14:28and more dialogue around this. So anyway, thank you for
- 14:31spending time with me and looking forward to see what
- 14:34comes with it. Take care.
- 14:38Hey, thanks for joining us today.
- 14:39If this is something that you connected with, I'd love to meet
- 14:42with you more and talk about it. So what you can do is go to
- 14:45chooserecoveryservices.com or check the show notes and there
- 14:49what we can do is set up a quick conversation meeting.
- 14:51Thanks so much for listening to Beyond the Facade where we
- 14:54unmask the authentic self.
