- 0:11Mac to hear his insight and perspective on his first
- 0:14season in Midnight Green. We hope you enjoy all right, Max.
- 0:27Speaker 2: So let's start with this.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Your first name is to carry it right and to
- 0:33carry on, to carry on?
- 0:35Speaker 2: How did how did you end up converting it to Mac?
- 0:38At what point did you and did anybody call you that?
- 0:40Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 0:40Speaker 5: To be real, I ain't get started like folks and
- 0:44start calling me like Mac until I got into hospital.
- 0:47Speaker 4: I would always grow up like I.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Had a nickname dudhah so like du Da so like
- 0:53everybody used to call me that, just my nickname. More,
- 0:55once I got to high school, I guess everybody's start
- 0:58calling me Mac. I got a older brother named Fish, Well,
- 1:02his nickname is fish, so they get fish Soudwich.
- 1:05Speaker 4: They that's his nickname, Fish Soundwich.
- 1:06Speaker 5: So I guess they started calling me Mac once they
- 1:09seen it that he was my older brother and that
- 1:11he was going big, like going to hot.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Calling and thing. He had a lot of offers. So
- 1:16in high school they started calling me back and I
- 1:17just ran with it after that.
- 1:18Speaker 2: So what did dude, where did that come from?
- 1:21Speaker 4: My mom and my grantage, they used to call me that.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Uh, I I was little, I was always I was
- 1:26like one of the bad kids. So like an it's time,
- 1:28like something bad was gonna happen, or they wanted something,
- 1:31they wanted to see something bad happen to like get him, dude,
- 1:33to get them do to and and they just ran
- 1:35with it.
- 1:36Speaker 3: So your brother fish was a defensive tack or we
- 1:38got to play with him at ua b race?
- 1:41Speaker 4: What was that?
- 1:42Speaker 2: How competitive was that?
- 1:43Speaker 4: Growing up?
- 1:43Speaker 2: Your brother's defensive tackle, your defensive back? What kind of
- 1:46battles did you guys?
- 1:46Speaker 4: Old man? We bout it every day growing up.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Uh, we were separate because we was we had the
- 1:52same dad, different moms, But once we got together, we
- 1:54was all class. We class we always class heads. We
- 1:57used to race all the time. He used to be
- 1:58faster than me growing up. Actually really he actually was
- 2:00official counter fair. So uh we raced every day and
- 2:04made sure I competed with him. Then once we got
- 2:06to high school, I didn't get to go to high
- 2:08school with him. We we literally was uh across the
- 2:10him like you jump a fence, and that's his high school.
- 2:12So we always used to look at each other across
- 2:14the gate, tell each other how we gonna do each
- 2:16other when we see him on Friday night lights and
- 2:18things like that.
- 2:19Speaker 4: So it was fun and I love it.
- 2:20Speaker 2: At what point did you start to beat him in
- 2:21those races?
- 2:22Speaker 4: Uh?
- 2:22Speaker 5: Definitely when we got to high school. He he gained
- 2:24a little bit of little weight, you know, uh converted
- 2:27D type cause you wasn't playing running back. You know,
- 2:29he was a a great running back and things like that.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Uh.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Literally, so once he got to high schol and think
- 2:33they converted him to D tackle.
- 2:35Speaker 4: He gained a couple pounds and they.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Y had the rest of his Well what do you
- 2:41What are your memories of growing up in Pennsylcola, Florida.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a lot of great memories, you know, said,
- 2:47I would definitely say it's a well known well I
- 2:49wouldn't say well known city, but the guys, the folks
- 2:52that lived there, I say, we all family s.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Prinsic Colon is so small. Everybody knows everybody so you.
- 2:57Speaker 5: Know, just having the good memories, you know, having the
- 3:00great friends, great parents, co parents, everything, It was a blessing.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You went to Pine Florest High School.
- 3:06Speaker 3: You played with Martin Emerson and Devin Witherschil.
- 3:10Speaker 2: What was that secondary like and how competitive were you
- 3:13guys as.
- 3:14Speaker 5: A trial same thing as my brother man. We used
- 3:16to go at it every day of practice. We never
- 3:18let it receives catch balling us. We made sure I
- 3:22receive a call to bottom enough. We made sure the
- 3:24other guy ran all the way down like it was
- 3:26like three hundred yards. We had a fence down there,
- 3:29so every time or see we had to catch a ball,
- 3:30we used to run all the way down there to
- 3:32the fence. So you know, just getting that thrilled in
- 3:34that excitement. You know, them guys was a big time
- 3:37coming out of high school.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Especially Martin Emerson.
- 3:40Speaker 5: He was having sec D one since he was in
- 3:43a freshman in high school. So you know, just looking
- 3:46at all the scouts come in, it was a dream
- 3:49to do this.
- 3:49Speaker 2: You were a defensive back, but you also returned.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Punts if I'm correct on that definitely did you get
- 3:54a chance to do that in college?
- 3:55Speaker 2: Get a chance to do it even in the training camp.
- 3:58Speaker 5: I did it in college a little bit, but I
- 4:00didn't have like any returns I can s.
- 4:02Speaker 4: I can kind of one hand how many re uh
- 4:04returns I had, and in call U think had like
- 4:06two or three. Yeah. Yeah, I was really a fair
- 4:09catch guy.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Well, especially when I got a UAV we we really
- 4:11wasn't the return uh punt return team.
- 4:14Speaker 4: So make sure I got a good field physician for
- 4:16the offense.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Now I'm taking you back to April.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Now, what was your Do you remember draft night?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Draft Dad? Oh, lord, and and they kind of set
- 4:25the scene for us.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, I I said, I was in dester that night.
- 4:31Speaker 5: But the morning I woke up, I knew I I
- 4:35knew it was. I knew today that they was gonna
- 4:37be the day that I got drafted. But I was
- 4:40thinking the whole other days too, I was gonna get drafted.
- 4:42So you know, I just woke up with.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Him until that.
- 4:44Speaker 5: I prayed before I I uh, I got up out
- 4:46the bed, you know, asked God to you know, come
- 4:48through with everything that he's always done for me, you know,
- 4:52have all my my family members there and everything like that.
- 4:54And once I got that car, the rest is history. Man,
- 4:58I appreciate all the staff members. Uh Howie Nick for
- 5:04you know, drafted me and you know just believing in me.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Did you have any pre draft interaction with Vegas?
- 5:09Speaker 4: I definitely did it.
- 5:10Speaker 5: That's at the recent ball I talked to him, but
- 5:13like once we got to the Stone.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Combine, I didn't have like that and informals or nothing
- 5:17like that way.
- 5:19Speaker 3: So what did you know anything about Philadelphia before you
- 5:21got us?
- 5:21Speaker 5: I definitely I know a little bit because uh they
- 5:24I definitely did a zoone call with him with coach Roy. Yeah,
- 5:28I did a zoone call. We touched up a little
- 5:30bit and they definitely said I was one of the
- 5:32guys that they liked him.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Hop about the city of Philadelphia and the fans. Did
- 5:35you know anything about that?
- 5:36Speaker 4: No? I did not know until I got here.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Well what's that?
- 5:39Speaker 3: I mean, you got a chance to see them in
- 5:41the preseason and you also got a chance to see
- 5:43the turnout for open practice. What are your initial impressions?
- 5:45Speaker 4: Man?
- 5:46Speaker 5: I love it, man, I ain't allow of feeling philadefinitely.
- 5:49I feel like I can definitely make this my second home.
- 5:52A great crowd, great fans, they die hard about this football,
- 5:56and you can definitely tell is.
- 5:58Speaker 3: There a particular defensive back who's really been a resource
- 6:00to you that's kind of showing you the ropes throughout
- 6:02the summer.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I definitely say all of them.
- 6:05Speaker 5: You know, me and Drew coming in being on the
- 6:08rookie dbs, so you know, uh, Coop Quinnon, even when
- 6:13JB came in, Uh door, you know an autumn guy.
- 6:17You know, they they didn't been in the game for
- 6:19a little bit and now so you know, just critiquing
- 6:21myself and just getting a little a little tip from them,
- 6:24you know, just to improve my game.
- 6:26Speaker 2: What do you like it defense?
- 6:27Speaker 4: Uh? What they get to the bar man, they get
- 6:30to the ball. They want the ball. They gonna do
- 6:32anything for.
- 6:34Speaker 3: What are some of the demands of playing the nickel
- 6:37role that maybe a lot on the outside wouldn't help.
- 6:40Speaker 5: You Gotta be physical, Uh definitely, because you know you
- 6:44got bigger old alignment and things like that. You got
- 6:46slide receiver that's trying to get up all you. That's
- 6:49I define, definitely say the main point is just being
- 6:51physical in knowing where your health is. You gotta have
- 6:55a little bit of IQ playing in the nickel, But
- 6:59once you get the whatever, It's all football at the end.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Of the day.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Defensive coordinator Vic Vangil has offered, you know, praise whenever
- 7:07your name has come up this summer. What have your
- 7:09interactions been with him and how do you see your fit.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Within the defense?
- 7:13Speaker 4: I love covid H.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I definitely say I still got a long way to go.
- 7:17I definitely appreciate him praising me and things like that,
- 7:20but I'm just taking everything day by day. Coach Vic,
- 7:25he has a great he has a great scheme that
- 7:26he got for us, and I'm just out here trying
- 7:29to complete and just be the best I can be.
- 7:32Speaker 2: We talked a little bit about this yesterday.
- 7:34Speaker 3: But your size, Yeah, playing on the outside, what is
- 7:37your approach when when you and you've cross trained outside,
- 7:40but what your approach when you're on the perimeter against
- 7:43bigger wide receivers.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Oh yeah, definitely get my hands on, try to slow
- 7:47they tracked down, you know, big guy.
- 7:49Speaker 4: They like to push off, like I was said, So just.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Making sure I get my hand placement right and being
- 7:54physical at the top of the rock.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Is that something that you had to work at or
- 7:57is that.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Just come natural to physicality? The you know, playing bigger
- 8:00than your side.
- 8:01Speaker 5: I definitely say a little bit of both. You know,
- 8:04it's always thing that you can improve on. But long
- 8:07as long as you got that heart in the wheel
- 8:09to and the desire to go out there and compete
- 8:11at the highest level and then ship.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Or how about the cross training mac We talked about
- 8:15this yesterday, but for the sake of this, you spent
- 8:18the first part of camp doing nickel and then you
- 8:20transitioned outside. And as a young player, was that was
- 8:24that a heavy work club?
- 8:26Speaker 2: Was that was that sort of lofty or how did
- 8:27you approach that?
- 8:28Speaker 4: No?
- 8:28Speaker 5: I definitely couldn't approach it at that way. I did
- 8:32a little bit of hot in college with it. I
- 8:35just say at the NFL level, you know, it's more
- 8:37schemed up, and you know, you gotta think a little
- 8:39bit more. So just having that little knowledge that I
- 8:42have from going into college and transfer to the NFL,
- 8:46you know, that's just that definitely helped me a little bit.
- 8:48Speaker 3: What were the hours like when you're sort of trying
- 8:51to crash course study into playing the outside after learning inside.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Yeah, it was definitely a long, a long process. Loan studying,
- 8:57long night studying. But long as you got the heart
- 9:00to do it. Man, if you just love for me,
- 9:02you you're gonna go out there.
- 9:03Speaker 4: You're gonna do whatever it.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Takes, last one for you, last one for you.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Have you given any thought to what it's gonna feel
- 9:09like going through the channel one Thursday night.
- 9:12Speaker 4: I haven't gotten the thought yet. I'm just waiting for
- 9:14it to come. Appreciate it.
