- 0:00Good to go back to the get an Amban as we do on Sundays.
- 0:03We'll do it today. And that letter that Amban is
- 0:06convincing his son this idea of proper character, starting with
- 0:11proper speech, leading to becoming humble.
- 0:14And then he he talks about all the benefits of being humble.
- 0:18We discussed him at length how it's a much more pleasant life
- 0:21and factually, in fact, you actually live a life we refer to
- 0:25as Ben Alamaba. You feel like you're living in
- 0:28the in the next World. While on this world, if you're
- 0:32humble, if everything feels better, insults don't hit you as
- 0:35hard. Things that are not to your
- 0:38respect don't bother you as much.
- 0:41Things that go on in the world don't make a difference to you
- 0:42as much. When you're humble, things feel
- 0:45better. Then he says challenges is that
- 0:49sometimes it's difficult to humble ourselves.
- 0:52We all have certain strengths. We all have certain strengths,
- 0:56certain angles, you know, we need to have confidence.
- 0:59Every one of us needs to have serious strong self-confidence.
- 1:03Otherwise you wouldn't function. Now where does your confidence
- 1:06come from? The confidence come from
- 1:08something you're good at. So you know there's no you that
- 1:11you're good at. Now what the risk is is you have
- 1:13to address is it the risk is a confidence and the source of
- 1:17confidence can lead to a lack of humility.
- 1:21Now in his argument, you get out to Nabani writes, he says, let
- 1:27me play out for you. You're you're debating humility.
- 1:31You challenge if you can have your mood, Obama, how will a
- 1:37person anyhow be lacking in humility?
- 1:40Where would a person develop arrogance?
- 1:42From where? I'll tell you where.
- 1:44Well, they can come from other people giving them a lot of
- 1:48cover, having a great talent, being very smart, being very
- 1:53well off. He's the easy source of
- 1:55arrogance. So he plays out, he plays them
- 1:57out and he, he has a way with these few lines to address that
- 2:02and to turn it into a positive. Let's see in the Osher go wealth
- 2:06first, if a person would become arrogant because of their
- 2:10wealth. Hashem moriche umashir, we tell
- 2:14the person from Pasuk God is a source Pasuk and alien God is a
- 2:20source of a person's poverty or you're wealth.
- 2:25I mean, because God is the source of that.
- 2:27Don't be so arrogant. Does he came out that says that
- 2:32the came out says that we, we talk about the ladder going up,
- 2:34you know, this is probably shot that's going up and down the
- 2:37ladder. And they say that Hashem what he
- 2:40does all day is brings people up and brings you down that ladder,
- 2:43which means some people go up, some people go down.
- 2:46Hashem is the one 1000% who rises people up, raises people
- 2:51up and takes them down. Now why and therefore
- 2:55financially specifically, we're talking about here now, why is
- 2:57that significant? The reason is significant and
- 3:00because the reason that there's an issue of humility when it
- 3:05comes to wealth and because when things are done by your hands or
- 3:10things are done by my hands, that is the greatest challenge
- 3:14of humility. How does it work?
- 3:16If I'm the one who made myself wealthy, how do I do it?
- 3:20I put in long hours, I made smart investments, I took the
- 3:25right job, I worked the right people.
- 3:28I went through all the training. I'm just playing it out in your
- 3:31mind. I went through all the training,
- 3:33I got the proper training for my father.
- 3:36I channelled my talents to the right thing, right?
- 3:39This is all my own doing. Naturally.
- 3:42That's the perspective. And it's actually very normal
- 3:45and very logical to think that way.
- 3:47And in fact, you're a source of confidence when it comes to
- 3:50success is drawn from that perspective.
- 3:54I did the right investments. I had the right partners, took
- 3:58the right job, went to the right training.
- 4:01I did the right schooling. I didn't search around in class,
- 4:04A listening class. All these minds is all I, I, I.
- 4:07And in fact, if you look back after the fact, after it's all
- 4:11over and you made all that money, you can look back and
- 4:15play out that perspective. Hence the challenge of a person
- 4:19remaining humble. The perspective has to respond
- 4:22with the idea Hashem, God is the one who makes people poor and
- 4:29also lifts people up, takes him down the ladder and up the
- 4:32ladder. Now why is that a challenge?
- 4:34Because you have to replace all those eyes and you can't really
- 4:38undo those eyes. All those eyes are true.
- 4:40You did take that job. You did work with that partner
- 4:43and you did well go through that schooling and you did have that
- 4:47upbringing. I need you to make the right
- 4:49decision. All those things are true.
- 4:51So how do we make a person humble?
- 4:55You put an umbrella perspective on top of them.
- 4:57Exactly. God gave you that partner to
- 5:01meet. He put you in that position.
- 5:03He gave you that school to get into.
- 5:06He gave you those parents. He gave you the idea to make
- 5:10that decision go even further. He made that line, that
- 5:15industry, a successful industry. He was all involved and put
- 5:19growing, raising you during a time that that industry is more
- 5:22effective. So your tools fit perfectly into
- 5:25that. So all the eyes which are there
- 5:28and cannot be erased, but you have to make that happen.
- 5:30Good. So all the I correct all the
- 5:32eyes that are there and all those eyes that lead to
- 5:36arrogance can all lead to removal of that arrogance and in
- 5:41fact to double down the humility when the person adds a
- 5:46perspective on top of that called Hashem put you there.
- 5:50Once you add the Hashem involved in that, everything that's going
- 5:53to make you arrogant instead turns around and not only
- 5:56doesn't make you arrogant, it makes you even more humble.
- 5:59The greater the person is. The most successful a person is
- 6:03with the wrong perspective, unbelievably arrogant.
- 6:06With the right perspective, unbelievably humble.
- 6:09In fact, he should be more humbled than the regular guy.
- 6:14Thank you. He should be more humbled than
- 6:16the average guy. Why?
- 6:17Because he actually has more Hashem in his life.
- 6:20The other guy who's challenged and struggling has Hashem.
- 6:23It's hard to see this person is well off with the proper
- 6:27perspective has more Hashem because God was involved in that
- 6:31decision. God was with you there and he
- 6:33was involved in that training and he chose that partner, he
- 6:36chose that business. So there's a lot more Hashem for
- 6:38him noticeably than there is for the person who's poor.
- 6:42And in fact, you can turn the entire thing upside down if you
- 6:46have the right perspective. So you look at sometimes in the
- 6:49World News, those out there in the world, let's say a non Jew,
- 6:54while you know, the wealthiest man alive and those types of
- 6:56people, right, Those kind, whoever they may be.
- 6:59And you look at them talk and you look at the craziness, you
- 7:01look how they go off the rails. A lot of times off the rails
- 7:05comes from that arrogance and that sense of I'm in control.
- 7:09That's what makes them go off the rails, right?
- 7:11They playing around with the world, they're praying all with
- 7:13life. They played around with
- 7:14politics, they play around with everything.
- 7:17So those people become people that are pretty much, you might
- 7:21refer to them as aloof and then you start referring to them as
- 7:25crazy and out there and not really part of the mainstream
- 7:30and they can't really function regular people.
- 7:32And all this craziness comes because of that self-made wealth
- 7:38and that our insert God into the picture and the entire balloon
- 7:44doesn't become Hazi. Case remains an extremely
- 7:48confident person, but the confidence comes from the fact
- 7:51that I did all those things because I had God's help.
- 7:54I did all those things because I had a sham with me.
- 7:57And now I become both humble and confident back to the good guy
- 8:01as I can be. That's when it comes to wealth,
- 8:03Joe. You see the concept, see the
- 8:05process, and that's how we know many people We know who are very
- 8:10well off and they very normal. And you know, sometimes you
- 8:14know, and then you know some well, people who are they still?
- 8:18Exactly. They still function part of the
- 8:20regular world. They still have to live a
- 8:22regular life. They might also have a part of
- 8:24their life that keeps them humble.
- 8:25I always say it to myself all the time, no matter what you do,
- 8:28it seems like a success. Hashem will always throw one
- 8:31thing there to remind you that you're a man of flesh and blood.
- 8:36Always remind you you're a humble person.
- 8:38It's good for us always. They have that or they have this
- 8:42perspective and this perspective that we have in front of us.
- 8:45Say again, why exactly It's a real thing.
- 8:48Guy could have. Guy could have these rolling.
- 8:51Let's say I did something amazing and true.
- 8:54I'll take my own song. I come home.
- 8:56If I say the wrong thing at home, I'm in the same zone as
- 8:59any other husband, right? It doesn't make a difference.
- 9:02Doesn't matter, Correct? Why is it the wrong thing?
- 9:05I don't know. Well, someone decided, you know,
- 9:09well you're being recorded whatever can, and you held
- 9:12against yourself. The point is, I'm sure you have
- 9:17attitude. You can have a great day at
- 9:19work, you can have a great day at work just in that
- 9:22perspective. And you know, you come home, you
- 9:24say something wrong, you're the great day is out the window.
- 9:27So there's ways to be made humble.
- 9:29And that's part of God's world. Yeah, that's part of God's
- 9:34world. So the overall perspective is
- 9:38there is a key, there's a trigger to arrogance, and that
- 9:42same trigger to arrogance can be turned around to humility.
- 9:46That's when it comes to wealth. What about what comes to another
- 9:50area? How about if a person is for
- 9:54some odd reason, it's a lot of Cowboys.
- 9:56That's a lot of respect. So if you erase wealth, usually
- 10:01respect, respect outside of wealth, Major family, major
- 10:07name, big rabbi, just a lot of respect.
- 10:11Age, age, they get respect. What do you do?
- 10:15What do you do? We'll get to intelligence in a
- 10:16second. How do you remove the arrogance
- 10:20that comes from others respecting you?
- 10:22Now let me explain the arrogance very clearly.
- 10:24The way it works very simply is and bond is dealing with it when
- 10:28others look at you like a big deal and they treat you like a
- 10:31big deal. I'll give you a classic example
- 10:34for a rabbi. You know, nowadays when they
- 10:36talk to a rabbi and they say, does the rabbi know where the
- 10:42rabbi's eating lunch today? I always laugh at this language.
- 10:45Does the rabbi know? I went to teach in a school for
- 10:47a year. It was the first time I was
- 10:49introduced to this language. And it was like over the top.
- 10:52Does the rabbi know where the rabbi is going?
- 10:54Where the rabbi Parks is caught. And I was like, I don't know who
- 10:56you're talking about. Rabbi, indeed.
- 10:57Who are you talking about exactly?
- 10:58I was in that school, the rabbi you're talking about.
- 11:00But anyhow, they say the rabbi, that language can get to your
- 11:05head very fast. Why?
- 11:08Because all that language, that way they treat you, the way they
- 11:11ask you questions, the way they talk to a third person, the way
- 11:14they give you unbelievable honor, it gets to the end.
- 11:18How do you do away with that honor?
- 11:21How do you address that honor? Here's the key.
- 11:24When it comes to kavod, the same way we said it with wealth,
- 11:28there's a similar perspective with its own twist when it comes
- 11:31to honor. That is 1 needs to recognize
- 11:34100% all honour in this world is only existence, fashion.
- 11:43Every level of cavoi that you give another person or that you
- 11:47receive yourself is cavoi shamaya.
- 11:49What do I mean? When you give that respect to a
- 11:52rabbi? What you are doing is saying
- 11:55being at this rabbi is God's representative being that he
- 11:58works in God's field. God deserves cavoi.
- 12:02So the rabbi is going to be God's physical existence on this
- 12:05earth. So he's God's emissary, he's
- 12:07God's ambassador. What you're doing is you're
- 12:10talking to a portion of Hashem. That's why you're giving him
- 12:14respect. And the rabbi needs to know that
- 12:16he can't think. And anyone important needs to
- 12:18know an elder as well, even an old person, really giving them
- 12:21respect is also as a representation of Hashem, a
- 12:24parent, even when they get unbelievable respect from their
- 12:27child, each other that that's the right thing.
- 12:30But that respect is also respect toward Hashem.
- 12:35And when you recognize that, again, the bloated arrogance
- 12:38that can come from other people treating you as a big deal can
- 12:42be shaved all the way down by realizing they're not actually
- 12:46talking to you. They're talking to your master,
- 12:48they're talking to your father. They're talking to the one who
- 12:51put you in this position in the 1st place.
- 12:53They're not giving Kavoid to the rabbi.
- 12:55They're giving kavoid to the Torah.
- 12:57They're not giving kavoid to the person.
- 12:59They're giving respect to Hashem.
- 13:01Now, that doesn't mean to disrespect the great person at
- 13:06all. Give him great respect.
- 13:09I made fun of the rabbi, of the rabbi business.
- 13:11Reality is, these children grow up with unbelievable respect of
- 13:14their rabbis, and it's very healthy for them because they
- 13:16ask some questions and they trust their guidance and they
- 13:19follow them and they get influenced the right way many
- 13:23times from the rabbi's perspective, only because of the
- 13:26respect. Respect is one of the most
- 13:30powerful tools at our Toraja's disposal.
- 13:34Why? Because any comment that a rabbi
- 13:36says is only valuable because of respect, right?
- 13:40If a guy got up there in jeans and AT shirt and said you got to
- 13:44shape up and you got to do this and you got to do that, a
- 13:47regular guy in jeans and AT shirt, not going to have any
- 13:50effect. The rabbi guys up there suit and
- 13:52tie. People look at him like a big
- 13:54deal and he says something. His words carry weight because
- 13:59of what's behind that statement. Respect is one of the most
- 14:03important and powerful tools in our system.
- 14:06It's what allows us to be influenced.
- 14:08You're not influenced if a random guy who doesn't know how
- 14:11to run a business came over to you and told you no, I think you
- 14:14should shape up your company in the following way.
- 14:17He'd say you're a very smooth talker.
- 14:19I hear we have to say, what's it worth?
- 14:21It's not backed by anything. But if the guy who has a major
- 14:24company comes and tells you how to run it, you give it much more
- 14:28respect and you accept his word so much more.
- 14:31That is the power of respect and business.
- 14:34And the same thing is true and Torah as well.
- 14:36If I came to you as a rabbi who officially is 1.
- 14:40But he doesn't really know anything.
- 14:42He just has a position and his words carry no weight.
- 14:45But if you know that he's backed by a lot of Torah, a lot of
- 14:47years, whatever it may be, then his words carry so much more
- 14:51weight, Correct? So respect is a very effective
- 14:54tool and a very necessary tool, but you got to be careful to not
- 14:59allow the respect that you receive or that I receive to get
- 15:04to our heads. And the way we do that is by
- 15:06saying disrespect that I'm getting.
- 15:08It's not mine, I don't own it. It's not meant for me.
- 15:11It's meant by 'cause there's about a who 1000%.
- 15:14And when they're giving me honor, when they stand up for a
- 15:16rabbi, what they're really doing is they're standing up for the
- 15:19Torah. So a Torah walks in the room,
- 15:22stand up. A rabbi walks in the room, you
- 15:25stand up because he learnt, that's why, because he's a
- 15:29walking saver to God. So it all goes back to God when
- 15:33you have that perspective. If you're a significant person,
- 15:36which we all are in our own way, and you're getting respect in
- 15:39your position, you tell yourself, I know I'm getting
- 15:42respect, I know people are making me into a big deal.
- 15:45Let's be clear, it's all Hashem, and if Hashem wanted, He could
- 15:50undo this in 5 minutes or less. If God wanted, He can make this
- 15:54respect go away like this. People won't be interested
- 15:57anymore. People are not impressed.
- 15:59My words are no longer carrying any weight, whatever it may be.
- 16:02God could do that in a second and they covered exactly.
- 16:06Be very careful what you say because Hashem can take it down
- 16:09the last area. So again, two areas of arrogance
- 16:13are wealth and respect the President's going to represent.
- 16:18I respond this way. The last one is wisdom.
- 16:22Now, wisdom feels like it's man made, especially if it's Torah
- 16:26wisdom. If you're known to be a major
- 16:30tamit kaham, not a Rabbi Vishu, a major tamit kaham, you sit,
- 16:35you learn, you know everything, all right?
- 16:38If you know everything and people make a big deal about
- 16:41you, they ask that rabbi a question.
- 16:43He always knows the answer, all right?
- 16:45He's always got it on the fingertips.
- 16:47There's a chance there's a major risk you're going to become a
- 16:50little bit, you know, arrogant. Why?
- 16:53I know so much and now I know so much.
- 16:56I worked at it. It took all those years and I
- 16:59did it take all those years. It's a holy thing.
- 17:01So I put in my time. It wasn't business, it wasn't
- 17:05respect. It's Torah.
- 17:06I developed a lot of wisdom of Torah where, you know, easily
- 17:10I'm at risk of becoming an arrogant person.
- 17:12Correct you or no, right. How do you want to do that?
- 17:16How do you want to do the arrogance say again, good.
- 17:21And this is even further and more difficult to see, but it's
- 17:24equally very real. Hashem gave you the wisdom to be
- 17:29in that position. God gave you the words to say
- 17:32that speech or gave you the idea to say that comment with now
- 17:36this is very challenging because it's from our mind with our
- 17:40reading. I'm reading you this book today,
- 17:42right? You get it then I'm buying.
- 17:44I read it from learning it last night, from preparing it last
- 17:49night. Where is Hashem involved?
- 17:52The way Hashem was involved is very clear.
- 17:54He gave you the connections. He gave you the theme.
- 17:58He gave you the idea to read the Guerra Tanaban.
- 18:00He gave you this perspective on this book.
- 18:03He gave you everything that you developed from these words.
- 18:06It's all totally 1000% Hashem. The learning that you do the
- 18:11application of the learning, the way you understand the learning,
- 18:13the way you write based on the learning, the way you say over
- 18:17an idea to your family based on the learning all that are all
- 18:21different versions of God, God, God, God.
- 18:24That has to be our perspective and the clearest example he
- 18:26gives is they bring over here on the bottom and we'll close with
- 18:29this and come first align. The MIT Baehr bekhoma that I'm
- 18:35about is telling his son, if you become glorified because of your
- 18:38wisdom, Misir Safa leneh manim Hashem can remove the speech of
- 18:46the most competent, the Tom Zikenem yikak, and the wisdom of
- 18:52the age can be gone. I'll give you 2 gemaro to back
- 18:55this up. There was a rabbi, Rabbi Asef.
- 18:58Rabbi Asef was quoted all over the place.
- 19:01Rabbi Asef later on in life says, and he was known to be one
- 19:06of the most wise rabbis of his time.
- 19:08He was a big time teacher. A lot of the rabbis came from
- 19:10him. Later on in his life.
- 19:14He went blind. And when he went blind, another
- 19:17challenge happened, says the Camara.
- 19:20He forgot everything he learned. So what happened would be they
- 19:24would say a la ha, and he'd say, I don't remember that.
- 19:28And they would say you don't remember it.
- 19:30You taught it to us. It's actually being quoted in
- 19:33your name. And they had to reteach to him,
- 19:37reteach him the entire total that he learned because he had
- 19:40forgotten everything. Why is that done to remind us
- 19:44that our wisdom is also a God giving gift.
- 19:47And the other example is our speech of our wisdom, the things
- 19:50that come out of our mouth. Also the right words at the
- 19:54right tone at the right angle to make the right pitch to say the
- 19:57right thing. All that all those smarts also
- 20:00from God. They give us an example where
- 20:03Rabbi was they were looking for a new town Rabbi.
- 20:08This is Nigamara and they and someone recommended my student
- 20:11is the best. Take him, he goes to the town,
- 20:15coming for the big moment, the big meeting, the big speech, and
- 20:19he gets up to talk. Nothing comes out of his mouth.
- 20:23He thought I'd ask you any questions.
- 20:24He said I'd ask you any questions.
- 20:26Still nothing comes out of his mouth.
- 20:28And he has to shamefully get down from the pulpit, go down
- 20:34and walk back or go back to his Old Town or go back to his
- 20:38teacher. His teacher said what happened?
- 20:40He says I learnt pretty much, I learnt a wisdom comes from God.
- 20:44I learned that everything I have comes from Hashem.
- 20:46I learned that from this moment. These are two stories and there
- 20:49are many. Any rabbi themselves in this
- 20:52current day and age can give you examples of where the idea that
- 20:55they came up with for the speech, the greatest speech they
- 20:57ever gave or the greatest thought they ever said came from
- 21:00Hashem. From some random vision or some
- 21:02random sight they saw a random thought.
- 21:05The theme is we all have gifts and those are built to make us
- 21:10confident, but at the same time you add the Hashem factor that
- 21:14are meant to make us weak but humble They do because when you
- 21:19add Hashem, you say my wealth, a lot of good moves, plus God, my,
