- 0:00Ninety-two dollars and twenty-two cents.
- 0:02That was the prompt settlement on West Texas Intermediate after an eleven dollar and
- 0:07twenty-one cent jump in a single session, while Brent blew past ninety-four dollars
- 0:11and ten cents across the weekend.
- 0:14If you only look at your screen, you see green candles everywhere.
- 0:18You think every crude producer between Calgary and Midland is popping champagne.
- 0:23But if you have ever spent a week on an actual physical trading desk,
- 0:26you know that paper rallies and physical reality rarely travel in the same lane.
- 0:31It, it reminds me of that classic trap.
- 0:34You see headline crude ripping higher because tanker traffic through the Strait of
- 0:37Hormuz is practically paralyzed, Southern Iraqi and Kuwaiti export storage is
- 0:42brimming over, and Atlantic Basin refiners are panicking for sweet waterborne
- 0:46barrels.
- 0:47So the paper market goes wild.
- 0:49But down on the ground, in the pipe, the friction is brutal.
- 0:53If widening inland differentials and pipeline transit tariffs eat up sixty percent
- 0:57of that price pop before your barrel touches a manifold, what did you actually gain?
- 1:03Consider Canada right now.
- 1:05Up in Alberta, Western Canadian Select at Hardisty widened out to fifteen dollars
- 1:09and fifty cents under WTI.
- 1:11Why?
- 1:12Because heavy fall maintenance across oil sands upgraders threw off the diluent
- 1:16balance, leaving heavy sour crude stuck in place.
- 1:19The Enbridge Mainline cross-border capacity is pinned at its absolute ceiling.
- 1:24Meanwhile, down in the Gulf, Pemex is holding back Maya crude exports to run through
- 1:28their own Olmeca refinery.
- 1:30The heavy market is parched, yet Canadian barrels are stranded by pipeline steel.
- 1:35And look at the upstream drillers.
- 1:37According to Baker Hughes, for the week ending September twenty-fifth,
- 1:40active U.S.
- 1:41crude oil rigs actually ticked up by three to four hundred and fifty-five.
- 1:45Total rigs rose by four to five hundred and ninety-nine.
- 1:48In the Permian, they added one single rig, bringing the basin to two hundred and
- 1:53forty-one.
- 1:54That is not an emergency drilling wave.
- 1:57Producers wait months to confirm whether price spikes will stick before deploying
- 2:01capital.
- 2:02They are not chasing weekend headlines.
- 2:05At the very same time, commercial inventories at Cushing, Oklahoma are sitting right
- 2:09near twenty-two million barrels.
- 2:12That is dangerously close to operational tank bottoms.
- 2:16Domestic refinery runs are humming at ninety-two percent utilization to squeeze out
- 2:20products before October turnarounds begin.
- 2:23When Cushing runs that low, suction pumps risk cavitation, blending gets choppy,
- 2:29and traders who priced storage off paper spreads suddenly discover that the barrels
- 2:33they thought they could easily dispatch are literally trapped in transit.
- 2:38Which brings us straight to the regional bottlenecks out west.
- 2:41Now, let us trace those barrels out of the Rockies and the Northern Plains,
- 2:45because this is where the logistics math gets fascinating.
- 2:49Take Utah's Uinta Basin.
- 2:51Operators there, like Ovintiv, SM Energy, and XCL Resources,
- 2:55are pumping about one hundred and fifty thousand barrels a day of yellow and black
- 2:59wax.
- 3:00It is incredible crude, ultra-low sulfur, commanding a three-dollar premium over WTI
- 3:05at Gulf Coast cat crackers.
- 3:08But you cannot simply throw waxy crude into an ordinary common-carrier pipe,
- 3:12or it turns into a giant candle.
- 3:14Salt Lake City refineries can only run about eighty-five thousand barrels a day
- 3:18ahead of turnarounds, and that eighty-five-mile Uinta Basin Railway project is tied
- 3:23up in federal appeals.
- 3:24So what happens?
- 3:26Producers willingly pay sixteen to eighteen dollars a barrel to load insulated,
- 3:30coiled railcars, because high Gulf margins still make the train pay.
- 3:34Then you head northeast into North Dakota.
- 3:37Bakken output is holding flat at one point two million barrels a day under strict
- 3:41state gas capture rules requiring ninety-five percent compliance.
- 3:45Most folks assume that running crude down the big pipelines all the way to the Gulf
- 3:49Coast automatically yields the highest return.
- 3:52But the numbers do not say that.
- 3:54Modeling from Plainview Energy Analytics shows that moving Bakken crude through the
- 3:59Bridger and Pony Express pipeline corridor delivers a netback of fifty-five dollars
- 4:04and twenty-eight cents at Cushing.
- 4:06By contrast, shipping via the Dakota Access Pipeline, DAPL,
- 4:10down to Nederland nets fifty-four dollars and seventy-five cents.
- 4:15That is a fifty-three cent advantage staying inland at Cushing.
- 4:20That fifty-three cent edge pulls volume south toward Guernsey,
- 4:23Wyoming.
- 4:24Drillers in the Powder River Basin, teams like EOG, Anschutz,
- 4:28and Continental, are also dumping fresh light sweet barrels into eastern Wyoming
- 4:32gathering lines.
- 4:34That drove Guernsey crude to a seventy-five cent premium over Cushing,
- 4:37and an eye-opening one dollar and fifty-five cents above Clearbrook,
- 4:41Minnesota, which sat at minus eighty cents under WTI.
- 4:45Wyoming is sucking in barrels from every direction.
- 4:48But here is the hitch: Guernsey is clogged.
- 4:51East Daley Analytics tracks Pony Express at one hundred percent utilization.
- 4:56That two hundred and thirty thousand barrel per day line, recently acquired by
- 4:59Enbridge in that two point five-five billion dollar Tallgrass deal,
- 5:02is packed full.
- 5:04What about Saddlehorn?
- 5:05Well, the Cheyenne Pipeline brings one hundred and twenty thousand barrels a day
- 5:08into the corridor, but the downstream Cowboy Pipeline connector into Saddlehorn
- 5:12maxes out at ninety-five thousand barrels a day.
- 5:15Plains is working to expand Cowboy to one hundred and twenty-five thousand,
- 5:18but until that work finishes, you have a physical pinch point of twenty-five
- 5:22thousand barrels every single day.
- 5:25So, if you are running a terminal desk this week, do not get hypnotized by
- 5:28ninety-two dollar WTI on your monitor.
- 5:31Watch the nomination cut sheets coming in.
- 5:33If Pony Express cuts your allocation and Cowboy cannot take the overflow,
- 5:37you have two choices: find scarce tank space at Guernsey, or pay the freight penalty
- 5:41and roll barrels onto a railcar.
- 5:43Out here in the physical market, pipe steel writes the rules,
- 5:46and the steel does not care about the headline.
