- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Picture yourself as a third grader.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: It's May and you have two weeks of school left.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: It's warm outside, and all you can think about is a fun-filled summer full of sprinklers, fireworks, and ice cream.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Yet you sit here at this uncomfortable desk, listening to the teacher droning on and on about some lesson in math or history or science.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: You'd rather be anywhere but here.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: We never quite escape this impulse of wanting to be done with our education.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: We move on to middle school, high school, most likely college, and perhaps grad school.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: With every level, there is a sense in which we just want to be done so we can move on with our lives.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: This doesn't change even when you get to the doctoral level.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Ask any PhD student in the middle of their dissertation, and they'll likely say, I just want to be done with this thing.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: That's the kind of attitude most people expect from formal education where we follow a prescribed path somebody else has laid out for us.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Now there's lots of benefits to formal education, but nothing compares to the curriculum you create for yourself.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: If you want to grow as a writer or as an artist, you have to change your mindset about learning.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Learning is a privilege, not an obligation.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Learning can happen anywhere, not just in a prescribed institution.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Learning is the match that lights the fire of passion and purpose, not the bucket of water that drowns it out.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Ernest Hemingway once said, We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: We must take time to learn every day.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Whether it's a book, podcast, course, video, mastermind, or some other learning opportunity, it's absolutely vital that you make it a priority.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Even just a few minutes of learning each day can change the whole course of your life in just one short year.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: You might have a master's degree, but you never truly become a master.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: You are always an apprentice.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: We really appreciate you tuning in today.
