Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to a very nice episode sixty
- 0:21Speaker 1: nine of Cards and Categories. I'm Mike cool Ard from Rasball,
- 0:24Speaker 1: joined as always by my good friend Jeremy Burr, also
- 0:27Speaker 1: from ras Ball. It's a Tuesday. It feels a little
- 0:30Speaker 1: weird that we're recording today. But how are you feeling?
- 0:33Speaker 2: I am feeling so good. You can defer my pay
- 0:36Speaker 2: uh for the next five years and pay increments of
- 0:42Speaker 2: five dollars each once we get there. Me and Blake
- 0:45Speaker 2: Snell are gonna be on the same payment plan and
- 0:48Speaker 2: I'm gonna go play for the Dodgers. So I'm just
- 0:49Speaker 2: fantastic excited.
- 0:51Speaker 1: To be here. Yeah, okay, that's I didn't that's how
- 0:54Speaker 1: you're gonna announce the signing. You're not gonna use your
- 0:56Speaker 1: Instagram like big, I'm not. I'm not gonna use my
- 0:59Speaker 1: first Instagram post. It's very I just fought it the
- 1:03Speaker 1: other day. My wife's been sending me on Instagram reels
- 1:05Speaker 1: for about a year and I.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Did not know it. I had a lot of catch
- 1:08Speaker 2: it up to do, and apparently I've been really ignoring her.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Well, I will let you figure out how you're gonna
- 1:15Speaker 1: memend that portion of your relationship while I get into
- 1:18Speaker 1: a little bit of a preview of what we're gonna
- 1:19Speaker 1: be talking about here. We have a great episode lined
- 1:22Speaker 1: up to talk about the release of twenty twenty four
- 1:25Speaker 1: Bowman Draft. It's been a couple of weeks since we've talked.
- 1:28Speaker 1: We took a couple of weeks off for just travels
- 1:31Speaker 1: and Thanksgiving and felt a little bit It felt nice
- 1:33Speaker 1: to get a little bit of a break, But we
- 1:35Speaker 1: certainly did miss a lot of news since we've last talked.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Like I said, we're recording on a Tuesday and stuff
- 1:40Speaker 1: or a normal Wednesday. It is December third, So let's
- 1:44Speaker 1: get into a little bit of like what we've missed
- 1:47Speaker 1: since we last talked. We've missed out on the qualifying
- 1:50Speaker 1: offer deadline happening in terms of teams that sent out
- 1:55Speaker 1: the qualifying offer, whether or not that player wanted to
- 1:57Speaker 1: come back. Nick Martinez was the only one that up
- 2:00Speaker 1: to that. So there's another handful of players that obviously
- 2:04Speaker 1: have that qualifying of offer attached to them now that
- 2:06Speaker 1: they've signed or are going to be out in the
- 2:09Speaker 1: market signing. We had the non tender deadline, we had
- 2:13Speaker 1: the forty man roster deadline, to be able to be
- 2:16Speaker 1: added so that you could avoid the Rule five draft.
- 2:19Speaker 1: We had all the major awards announcements in terms of honestly,
- 2:23Speaker 1: it was pretty boring between MVP and Cy Young and
- 2:26Speaker 1: maybe the only wrinkle SAI was a Rookie of the
- 2:29Speaker 1: Year with Paul Skeens pulling it out over Jackson Merrill
- 2:32Speaker 1: and Louise Heal taking it home for the Yankees. But
- 2:35Speaker 1: we've also had the Rays announcing that they're playing all
- 2:39Speaker 1: of twenty twenty five at Steinburnner Field, and we've had
- 2:42Speaker 1: the latest bit of news coming through from Paul Manfred
- 2:46Speaker 1: on the Golden Hitter rule that has just been lighting
- 2:48Speaker 1: social media fire on fire. We've also, I think kind
- 2:51Speaker 1: of missed everybody's on Blue Sky.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Now.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Twitter's pretty dead for us, so I think we've both
- 2:57Speaker 1: converted over to blue Sky. Fully, you can find us
- 3:00Speaker 1: there at cards categories, dot blue Sky, dot social or
- 3:04Speaker 1: whatever it is. I'm just gonna use the normal front
- 3:08Speaker 1: part of that handle, so at cards categories there for
- 3:11Speaker 1: the podcast, at m cool seven for my handle, and
- 3:16Speaker 1: at jbrew one to seven. Correct, you got it for
- 3:20Speaker 1: your handle on Blue Sky, So go over there and
- 3:22Speaker 1: find us. I just rattled off what two, four, six
- 3:26Speaker 1: topics of like huge multi minute you know, outbursts. We
- 3:30Speaker 1: could go over, but any of those kind of news
- 3:33Speaker 1: items really pop out to you and something you've been
- 3:36Speaker 1: itching to say for a couple of weeks.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean any of these in a normal week
- 3:40Speaker 2: we've spent time diving into. I'll just call out a few,
- 3:43Speaker 2: like the qualifying offers. I don't think there's any big
- 3:45Speaker 2: shocks there. There was a Nick bound to accept what
- 3:48Speaker 2: was Pabeta or Martinez. We weren't sure, but Nick did
- 3:51Speaker 2: accept Martinez, that is, and I don't think there's be
- 3:53Speaker 2: any big shocks there. Honestly, I don't think there's big
- 3:56Speaker 2: shocks in the major awards or anything like that. The
- 3:59Speaker 2: area I think all was actually the most interesting was
- 4:01Speaker 2: actually on the non tender side. And you know, non
- 4:04Speaker 2: tenders is just such a unique thing because you're you're
- 4:07Speaker 2: non tendering and to get away from the potential ARB salary,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and so you have a vast array of players in
- 4:12Speaker 2: a vast array of scenarios, and so I just I
- 4:15Speaker 2: wanted to call out a few guys and get your
- 4:16Speaker 2: reaction to, like, which of these guys from a fantasy
- 4:20Speaker 2: perspective intrigues you the most kind of going into twenty
- 4:24Speaker 2: twenty five, whether it's where they land the role whatnot.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And so I'm gonna I'm gonna list five guys for
- 4:28Speaker 2: you here, Okay, Jordan Romero or Jordan Romero, Romano, Kyle
- 4:35Speaker 2: Kyle Finnigan. Oh, I'm losing. I lost my list here,
- 4:41Speaker 2: Austin Hayes, the the immaculate, Connor Joe. Yes, yes, because
- 4:50Speaker 2: just because Connor Joe, you always have to talk about
- 4:52Speaker 2: Connor Joe and then Ramon Leiano. So giving you a
- 4:58Speaker 2: few pictures, few hitters there that are just in very
- 5:02Speaker 2: different scenarios. Let's maybelet's start with the pitchers first. I'm
- 5:08Speaker 2: curious with those two Romano and finn again, what should
- 5:13Speaker 2: we look for? Are they interesting? Are they worth even
- 5:16Speaker 2: touching for twenty five?
- 5:20Speaker 1: I don't think Romano is, honestly because just because of
- 5:23Speaker 1: the injuries he dealt with that it felt like on
- 5:25Speaker 1: this podcast every couple of weeks we were giving updates
- 5:28Speaker 1: on his back than his elbow, then his back than
- 5:31Speaker 1: his elbow that I'm just not quite sure what Romano's
- 5:35Speaker 1: state of health is right now. Also showing their cards
- 5:39Speaker 1: Toronto doesn't. I mean, I guess Chad Green is there,
- 5:42Speaker 1: so Chad Green will take over, but not exactly like
- 5:44Speaker 1: a stallwart closer behind Romano. So I think I have
- 5:48Speaker 1: to go with Finnegan there that like, it's still better
- 5:52Speaker 1: stuff overall. And even though he has the mark on
- 5:56Speaker 1: his record of being like the first person to walk
- 5:59Speaker 1: in a game winning run on a on a pitch
- 6:01Speaker 1: clock violation, if you remember that in Colorado, Finnigins would
- 6:05Speaker 1: have been one of the worst people with the pitchclock violations.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But it's just been better stuff over twenty twenty four,
- 6:12Speaker 1: he's posted more. I think that there are a few
- 6:16Speaker 1: more fluid situations from a closer perspective where you could
- 6:19Speaker 1: see Finnegans signing and walking into something all the way
- 6:23Speaker 1: up from like the Yankees on the high end all
- 6:26Speaker 1: the way down to some lower end team like the
- 6:28Speaker 1: Marlins or something. So there's some despair. Luke Weaver like that.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Don't despairg lukeav I wish he is a ground ball
- 6:35Speaker 1: man and if you need to strike out, Kyle Finnigan's
- 6:38Speaker 1: gonna I think be a better source on the batting side, though,
- 6:41Speaker 1: the one that immediately popped out, assuming you know all
- 6:45Speaker 1: else Equel. You know, nobody's signing in Colorado and somebody
- 6:48Speaker 1: else's signing in Seattle or something. It's got to be
- 6:52Speaker 1: Ramon Loreano for me. His his second half with the
- 6:55Speaker 1: Braves was really sneaky. You know, two or twenty six
- 7:00Speaker 1: played appearances with the Braves. He put up a two
- 7:03Speaker 1: ninety six three twenty seven, five or five slash line
- 7:05Speaker 1: that was a one twenty nine WRC plus five steals
- 7:09Speaker 1: with the homer. So the power wasn't quite there, but
- 7:11Speaker 1: like the batting average and the speed was starting to
- 7:14Speaker 1: come back from Loriano as he found like a groove
- 7:17Speaker 1: in that Atlanta outfield. I was a little surprised he
- 7:19Speaker 1: got non tendered given the state of the Braves outfield.
- 7:23Speaker 1: So that's got to be my pick. He just kind
- 7:25Speaker 1: of showed more down the stretch than he had in
- 7:29Speaker 1: Cleveland or has the past couple of years in Oakland.
- 7:31Speaker 1: You're also looking Lorehan is only thirty years old, should
- 7:35Speaker 1: be a solid outfielder. He's going to get a good chance,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I think to start and play a lot somewhere.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right there. I do have a
- 7:45Speaker 2: soft spot for Austin Hayes. I think he's he's a
- 7:48Speaker 2: talent that's just never gotten the development he deserves. But
- 7:53Speaker 2: I think Loriano, like I've always loved the multifacets to
- 7:58Speaker 2: his game. He can run, he can hit for power,
- 8:01Speaker 2: he can feel, he can do a little bit of everything,
- 8:03Speaker 2: and that in the fantasy game just as a nice
- 8:05Speaker 2: little floor. It's never gonna be a high average guy.
- 8:08Speaker 2: But there's like worse things you can do towards the
- 8:12Speaker 2: back end of a draft to become a guy like Lariato,
- 8:14Speaker 2: and you know, just enjoy a ten, ten, fifteen to
- 8:18Speaker 2: fifteen type season with a two forty average, Like, there's
- 8:21Speaker 2: worse things in life than Rumo Lariato.
- 8:24Speaker 1: You pretty much just nailed his Steamer line without probably,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I don't think I'm your.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I'm not looking at it very much. I am Steamer,
- 8:34Speaker 2: I don't.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I mean Steamer also has that and only three hundred
- 8:36Speaker 1: and eighty four plate appearances is twelve and nine, So
- 8:39Speaker 1: like you might be looking at somebody who's like a
- 8:41Speaker 1: sneaky shot at twenty twenty depending on where.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah means he in a good year with full playing time,
- 8:48Speaker 2: he absolutely could threaten twenty twenty. It's not out of
- 8:50Speaker 2: the question.
- 8:51Speaker 1: At all.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's just like one of those you get a little
- 8:54Speaker 2: luck and it'll go far for a guy like him.
- 8:57Speaker 2: So and the problem is you just never can play
- 9:01Speaker 2: a full season.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, And I mean he was healthy last year.
- 9:04Speaker 1: It's just getting that opportunity now at this point for
- 9:07Speaker 1: his career is finding the right spot for Rome Loriano.
- 9:10Speaker 1: But you skipped right over the Manfred golden hitter rule
- 9:14Speaker 1: that I teach you up for. But I do want
- 9:16Speaker 1: to get your thoughts because everybody else is getting their
- 9:18Speaker 1: thoughts in This is our platform, so let me, I
- 9:23Speaker 1: guess I'll explain it a little bit. And you can
- 9:25Speaker 1: also find the details of this in our show notes,
- 9:28Speaker 1: along with anything else that we're gonna be talking about.
- 9:30Speaker 1: If you want the link to the related news story
- 9:33Speaker 1: or when we get to chalking the baseball cards, go
- 9:36Speaker 1: to rasball dot com check out the related post for
- 9:39Speaker 1: this podcast look at those cards that we've been talking about.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But Rob Manfred, I think it was it literally just today,
- 9:47Speaker 1: Like it feels like a fever dream, But I think
- 9:49Speaker 1: it was Or was it yesterday?
- 9:50Speaker 2: It was, yes, it was yesterday. It was late yesterday.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah, good good Monday fodder for the just Blue sky sphere.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I don't know what we're gonna do, the blue sky
- 10:01Speaker 1: of all the skating of everybody out there to be
- 10:04Speaker 1: able to get in their thoughts on Manfred was pitching
- 10:08Speaker 1: a rule where you could have one time per game
- 10:12Speaker 1: the ability to pinch hit anybody into that at bat
- 10:16Speaker 1: and into that moment. So, for example, let's say that,
- 10:20Speaker 1: like you know, you're in the bottom of the eighth,
- 10:22Speaker 1: you got the seven to old hitter up for the Dodgers,
- 10:25Speaker 1: bases are loaded. It's it's a pretty big spot. Even
- 10:28Speaker 1: though Otani might be your leadoff hitter, you can bring
- 10:30Speaker 1: him in, put him into that pinch hit spot. I
- 10:33Speaker 1: guess what happens if he's the next person up, But
- 10:36Speaker 1: like we'll get into I guess maybe you can pinch
- 10:39Speaker 1: run and stuff. But like, essentially you can pick anybody
- 10:41Speaker 1: in your lineup or on your bench to come in
- 10:44Speaker 1: take a pinch hit. He calls it the golden rule.
- 10:48Speaker 1: What do you think about this setup and whether or
- 10:52Speaker 1: not you think that Manfred has lost his marbles over this.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I go back to when we started talking about the
- 10:58Speaker 2: DH the Nation League, and I I had this like
- 11:01Speaker 2: I felt like a vera broke out in hives like
- 11:05Speaker 2: this is like a hundred times worse, Like how dumb
- 11:09Speaker 2: is this possible? Rule not let alone the like literal
- 11:13Speaker 2: mechanics of it. Yeah, of like Otani is up, he singles,
- 11:18Speaker 2: let's try it again, Let's bring it back. Like it's
- 11:21Speaker 2: just there's so much that could go wrong and with
- 11:24Speaker 2: this and also just the and I'm sure this has
- 11:27Speaker 2: been all over the Twitter sphere, the Blue sky sphere, everywhere.
- 11:30Speaker 2: It's like the antithesis of baseball is the seven hole
- 11:36Speaker 2: hitter being up in that spot and becoming the hero
- 11:41Speaker 2: and making that play. It's that the best hitters in
- 11:44Speaker 2: the world fail seventy percent of the time, and you're
- 11:48Speaker 2: you're relying on let's go to the Dodgers Tommy Edmond
- 11:52Speaker 2: and he is just making a name for himself on
- 11:54Speaker 2: the big stage. And it's a chance for that to occur.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And you know, you just go back in history and
- 12:01Speaker 2: look at some of the biggest moments that we've had
- 12:04Speaker 2: in ballgames, and it's the names. You know, Bucky dev
- 12:09Speaker 2: like that would have never happened, right, kirk Kinson, that
- 12:13Speaker 2: would have happened. But like you can go back, it's
- 12:16Speaker 2: like these these names and these players that that there
- 12:19Speaker 2: was kind of these one time gyms just wouldn't be
- 12:23Speaker 2: part of the conversation. And that's just so disappointing. Yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 2: and I like to say this because of a baseball purist.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I don't think it's a baseball purist thing. This is
- 12:31Speaker 2: just like you are changing so much about the game
- 12:36Speaker 2: that like every stats called into question, like it's I
- 12:41Speaker 2: actually do worry about injuries as far as you know,
- 12:44Speaker 2: you're putting a little bit more stress on a player
- 12:47Speaker 2: in the situation. Now you've just messed with all the
- 12:50Speaker 2: pitching matchups, Like it just you've just completely changed the
- 12:54Speaker 2: strategy dynamic of how you create and play in a team.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It's like if every team had tear and score as
- 13:00Speaker 2: a pinch runner all the time. It's like having Aaron
- 13:03Speaker 2: Judge on the bench for every important bat. Like I,
- 13:08Speaker 2: this is ridiculous. I just can't say it enough. It
- 13:12Speaker 2: it can't happen, It will not happen. This to me
- 13:16Speaker 2: reeks of like Manfred being smart enough to be like
- 13:19Speaker 2: baseball's not in the news right now because Sodo hasn't signed.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Let me come up with something so idiotic that they're
- 13:23Speaker 2: gonna talk about it for the next week and then
- 13:26Speaker 2: SODA's gonna sign and we'll be back in the news again.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Like it almost reeks of that more than the stands
- 13:31Speaker 2: that they'd ever actually consider something like this. Ever, we
- 13:35Speaker 2: get paid an extra one hundred grand for every bat
- 13:36Speaker 2: Like all right, I'm done, I'm done. You poke, you
- 13:41Speaker 2: poked the bear on this one.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Yes I did, and I mean on top of it too,
- 13:44Speaker 1: Like we do have the winter meetings coming up. I
- 13:46Speaker 1: do wonder if it is like a little bit of
- 13:48Speaker 1: like a corporate initiative that everybody has a good talking
- 13:51Speaker 1: point so you can ice break when you get out
- 13:52Speaker 1: there to the meetings and when you're in these awkward
- 13:56Speaker 1: networking you know, drinking situations with every buddy and their
- 14:00Speaker 1: performance polos that you know, we can talk about the
- 14:03Speaker 1: Golden rule and how stupid it is, because it does
- 14:05Speaker 1: feel something like something just a foot too far that like,
- 14:09Speaker 1: I don't see how it speeds up the game. If anything,
- 14:12Speaker 1: it slows down the game, which I could get behind
- 14:15Speaker 1: for a lot of the other initiatives that come through.
- 14:18Speaker 1: But then, like you said, you have to then consider
- 14:21Speaker 1: all of the stats readjustments. Maybe eighty percent of the
- 14:26Speaker 1: time this player would get walked, like why would you
- 14:29Speaker 1: not just intentionally walk them immediately? And then yeah, it's
- 14:34Speaker 1: just there is something you nailed it about the everyman
- 14:38Speaker 1: in baseball. Every person, I guess I should say it
- 14:41Speaker 1: could doesn't have to necessarily be a man, but that
- 14:43Speaker 1: everyday person who looks like David Eckstein and gets up
- 14:47Speaker 1: there and just like has a huge moment in sports.
- 14:51Speaker 1: That there's something about baseball that allows that that basketball doesn't,
- 14:55Speaker 1: Football doesn't just because those sports, I mean baseball obviously,
- 15:00Speaker 1: it requires a level of athleticism and a level of
- 15:04Speaker 1: just like large persons that, like you, most baseball players
- 15:08Speaker 1: are not normal sized people because they you know, that's
- 15:13Speaker 1: what athletes are nowadays. But of any of those sports,
- 15:16Speaker 1: baseball is probably the closest, and so some of its
- 15:20Speaker 1: greatest moments come from that that. Sure we do love
- 15:23Speaker 1: the fifty to fifty home run from Otani and things
- 15:25Speaker 1: like that, but the greatest moments that I can think
- 15:28Speaker 1: of are like the David Freeze triple and like you
- 15:32Speaker 1: allude to, Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone, just like all sorts
- 15:35Speaker 1: of just players who the situation met them and then
- 15:39Speaker 1: they had to rise to it. That that's the entire
- 15:41Speaker 1: point in baseball, and it would really, I think, alter
- 15:44Speaker 1: the soul of the sport if we went away from that.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I absolutely agree. I think that's what is so
- 15:52Speaker 2: difficult to hear, like would this actually be something that
- 15:55Speaker 2: people get into? And what I can't understand is like,
- 15:57Speaker 2: what's the what's the push behind it? I get all
- 16:00Speaker 2: the other things that accelerated the game and parody and
- 16:03Speaker 2: reducing injuries and things like this. The only thing that's
- 16:06Speaker 2: been played for this is it's more exciting. You get
- 16:09Speaker 2: to see the best players more often, but like it
- 16:13Speaker 2: it to your point, it just takes away something almost better. Yeah,
- 16:17Speaker 2: Like I paid to go see Otani. I've watched their
- 16:20Speaker 2: Tani bat five times, but I get to see somebody
- 16:23Speaker 2: else come out of nowhere and make that clutch hit
- 16:27Speaker 2: that you didn't expect, we didn't expect. It's the world's
- 16:29Speaker 2: best closer versus the guy that just got called up
- 16:32Speaker 2: from Triple A and he wins Like there's something about
- 16:35Speaker 2: that that we we just can't can't give away.
- 16:40Speaker 1: So well, I'm glad we're on the same page. That
- 16:44Speaker 1: would have been a really bad moment in podcast history
- 16:47Speaker 1: if we were not on the same page here that
- 16:48Speaker 1: it might have actually caused a pretty big fracture. So
- 16:52Speaker 1: if you are out there in your pro Golden Rule
- 16:54Speaker 1: and you're listening to this podcast, I would be interested
- 16:56Speaker 1: in here, like what maybe we're listening we're missing because
- 17:00Speaker 1: I'm yet to maybe see a pro Golden Rule take.
- 17:04Speaker 1: But there's got to be some controllon out there somewhere,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and so hit us up on those Blue Sky socials.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Email us at cardscategories at gmail dot com. We will
- 17:14Speaker 1: we will take that into consideration. But while we wait
- 17:18Speaker 1: for those responses back, let's get into some of the
- 17:20Speaker 1: news and notes. And it's a pretty lengthy list that
- 17:23Speaker 1: we've got. Not even all this stuff kind of happened
- 17:25Speaker 1: over the two weeks that we were out that we've
- 17:27Speaker 1: got a few things that were but most of these
- 17:29Speaker 1: things have happened recently, so let's get to them. The
- 17:33Speaker 1: big one that we have right off the top is
- 17:36Speaker 1: you almost alluded to this, you know a little bit
- 17:39Speaker 1: of your Your intro was Blake Snell's signing a five
- 17:42Speaker 1: year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. That's one hundred
- 17:47Speaker 1: and eighty two million dollars guaranteed, but it comes with
- 17:50Speaker 1: sixty five million dollars in deferrals and a fifty two
- 17:54Speaker 1: million dollars signing bonus, limited no trade protection, and all
- 17:59Speaker 1: sorts of other provisions. This will cover blake Snell's thirty
- 18:03Speaker 1: two through thirty six seasons. And this is quite the
- 18:07Speaker 1: windfall for the Dodgers, who had lots of pitching. Like
- 18:12Speaker 1: it wasn't that they were short on pitching, maybe short
- 18:14Speaker 1: on healthy pitching. But Blake Snell's coming off a really
- 18:18Speaker 1: brilliant stretch from the beginning of July on after he
- 18:23Speaker 1: returned from the hip injury that kind of almost seemed
- 18:26Speaker 1: like he just wasn't in shape because he signed late
- 18:28Speaker 1: last year and didn't get like a full spring training
- 18:31Speaker 1: at all, you know, signed in March. But since he's
- 18:34Speaker 1: came back on July ninth against Toronto in San Francisco.
- 18:39Speaker 1: From that point on, he threw eighty and a third innings,
- 18:42Speaker 1: went five to zero with a one twenty three ERA
- 18:46Speaker 1: one hundred and fourteen k's. That's good for a twelve
- 18:49Speaker 1: seventy seven K nine. And the walk rate was good
- 18:52Speaker 1: too for Blake Snell, which is usually not the case.
- 18:55Speaker 1: It was a three point for walk per nine and
- 18:59Speaker 1: he had a thrown in there too, So it was
- 19:02Speaker 1: a really brilliant stretch, very obvious that Blake Snell was
- 19:05Speaker 1: going to opt out of that contract with the Giants
- 19:07Speaker 1: to hit the open market, because I'm not sure we've
- 19:10Speaker 1: ever seen a better version of Blake Snell than the
- 19:12Speaker 1: one that we got over those last fourteen starts over
- 19:15Speaker 1: eighteen and third innings. With that in mind, where are
- 19:19Speaker 1: you putting him in your pitching rinks going into next
- 19:22Speaker 1: year for fantasy drafts?
- 19:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think Blake Snell is probably one
- 19:26Speaker 2: of the most divisive pitchers there is for ranking and
- 19:30Speaker 2: pitching because you saw the tail of two different pitchers
- 19:35Speaker 2: last year, and that's historically been his career, Like he
- 19:38Speaker 2: has just been this up and down guy, absolutely dominant times.
- 19:41Speaker 2: So then it can just be a little bit so wild.
- 19:43Speaker 2: You don't know what's gonna happen. And he is gonna
- 19:46Speaker 2: be on the Dodgers, so you feel good about the
- 19:48Speaker 2: win potential, the run support, generally decent defense, so I
- 19:53Speaker 2: think you have to be tossing him up definitely, definitely
- 19:56Speaker 2: top ten, and it's just a question of how far
- 19:59Speaker 2: up that list that you want to go. I'd probably
- 20:02Speaker 2: say the latter half of the top ten is where
- 20:04Speaker 2: I would be putting Blake Snell at this point. But
- 20:08Speaker 2: I also would not be shocked for him to be
- 20:10Speaker 2: the number one pitcher. Like I just I think there
- 20:13Speaker 2: is a little bit more volatility with Blake Snell, just
- 20:16Speaker 2: based on his profile, a little bit more flyball pitcher,
- 20:21Speaker 2: a little bit more walk prone, like he is susceptible
- 20:24Speaker 2: to those blow ups, and he if like something's off
- 20:26Speaker 2: with Blake Snell, it's way off. He can't gut through
- 20:29Speaker 2: it with that with that profile. But at the end
- 20:32Speaker 2: of the day, he's still a top ten pitcher for me.
- 20:35Speaker 2: And for two things I think you did miss here.
- 20:38Speaker 2: One Tommy Edmond actually signed with the Dodgers, the most
- 20:41Speaker 2: recent transaction with the Dodgers for the five year deal.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean that's an extension, so not quite as big
- 20:46Speaker 1: as a talking point for as But yeah.
- 20:48Speaker 2: But what I think is interesting, you know you kind
- 20:50Speaker 2: of you know, you mentioned all the deferrals there, and
- 20:54Speaker 2: I think this is just such an interesting dynamics the
- 20:57Speaker 2: Dodgers like have I don't sure they think they found
- 20:59Speaker 2: a loop or they've just literally punted the next like
- 21:01Speaker 2: ten years or what they're doing. But I was looking
- 21:04Speaker 2: out at roster resource and just looking out as far
- 21:07Speaker 2: as it goes. Twenty thirty one is how far it
- 21:09Speaker 2: goes out right near right now? What is their their
- 21:14Speaker 2: salary payments currently one for twenty thirty one, just just
- 21:20Speaker 2: take a guess that is.
- 21:22Speaker 1: I did see the reports that ESPN and some other
- 21:25Speaker 1: outlets had added up the deferred money that the Dodgers
- 21:28Speaker 1: are up to right now with this roster is over
- 21:29Speaker 1: a billion in total, but for twenty thirty one, so
- 21:34Speaker 1: you'll have Otani Freeman Snow, that's I'm guessing they've already
- 21:43Speaker 1: got like seventy five million on the books in twenty
- 21:46Speaker 1: thirty one.
- 21:47Speaker 2: In twenty thirty one, the Dodgers would qualify as today's
- 21:52Speaker 2: number sixteen team in payroll with one hundred and forty
- 21:57Speaker 2: eight million dollars. They're paying Otani seventy million, Yeah at
- 22:03Speaker 2: that point, and so that's like Otani ya, I'm amoto
- 22:09Speaker 2: bets dis in there to Edmunds deal in twenty thirty
- 22:16Speaker 2: That's why, Yes, that's why I went to thirty one,
- 22:18Speaker 2: because if we go up any further, like in twenty
- 22:21Speaker 2: twenty nine, it's two hundred million, like they I mean,
- 22:25Speaker 2: it's like is it a house of cards like that
- 22:28Speaker 2: you almost think it is, but yeah, they keep finding
- 22:30Speaker 2: this money and so like, yeah, it's one of those
- 22:34Speaker 2: Bobby Benia's uh, you know, best best dream here. But
- 22:40Speaker 2: I just I just it's such an interesting dynamic of
- 22:42Speaker 2: like the Dodgers have found all this money and it's
- 22:46Speaker 2: just paying for itself because they're being competitive. People are
- 22:49Speaker 2: going to the games, they're getting better TV deals, all
- 22:51Speaker 2: this thing and just keeps building on itself. And I
- 22:54Speaker 2: don't see them stopping. Like if on signed Wanosto, I'd
- 22:58Speaker 2: be a little surprised because they've shelled out this money
- 23:01Speaker 2: for Edmund and in the Snell, but I wouldn't be shocked,
- 23:06Speaker 2: and I would just expect it to be another massive
- 23:09Speaker 2: deal kind of like Otani's where they just you know,
- 23:11Speaker 2: spread it over fifteen years and you know they're like, well, sorry,
- 23:16Speaker 2: we'll be paying Otani in twenty thirty seven, or sorry
- 23:20Speaker 2: Soto in twenty thirty seven, and well beyond, oh well
- 23:23Speaker 2: I'll retire before then.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah, Andrew Friedman, I mean I have seen some like
- 23:29Speaker 1: fretting over whether or not it's like sustainable for the Dodgers,
- 23:32Speaker 1: but I do think that there's some sort of back
- 23:35Speaker 1: end finance stuff happening with Googa nine partners and the
- 23:38Speaker 1: private equity kind of realm where they're tucking away some
- 23:43Speaker 1: of this money and like haven't invested and already have
- 23:45Speaker 1: it hedged that Like, I'm not sure that there's gonna
- 23:49Speaker 1: be much of a worry here. It's not quite like
- 23:51Speaker 1: the the Fred Wilpond kind of like Mets years, where
- 23:54Speaker 1: things like really exploded and he wasn't like financially solvent
- 23:59Speaker 1: enough to be able to handle it all. The way
- 24:01Speaker 1: that the Dodgers and the Guggenheim Partners run that thing.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I think that all these things are accounted for that
- 24:07Speaker 1: between like valuation of the team going up that they
- 24:10Speaker 1: can borrow against them being able to tuck away money
- 24:13Speaker 1: and invest it in different areas and have that yield dividends.
- 24:17Speaker 1: I think that the Dodgers are going to be fine.
- 24:20Speaker 1: That it seems like it's a pretty slick run organization
- 24:23Speaker 1: in operation that like at this point, I think we're
- 24:27Speaker 1: going to be talking in a few years, like when
- 24:30Speaker 1: even you know, in twenty thirty one, the Dodgers have
- 24:32Speaker 1: that one hundred and fifty million dollar payroll, like what
- 24:35Speaker 1: will the rest of m will be look like? Because
- 24:37Speaker 1: the Dodgers are clearly pushing themselves to a level where
- 24:41Speaker 1: no one else wants to keep pace with them. I
- 24:43Speaker 1: think the Mets are starting to get there. The Yankees
- 24:46Speaker 1: could be there, but like the wherewithal to actually do
- 24:50Speaker 1: it is only happening in La.
- 24:53Speaker 2: It is and you know, you know, they got every
- 24:55Speaker 2: player insured and all these different things, like they are
- 24:58Speaker 2: very very well run, and it is kind of like
- 25:00Speaker 2: they found that cheat code of like we are banking
- 25:03Speaker 2: on inflation in hay roll and salaries, and that seventy
- 25:08Speaker 2: million for Otani in twenty thirty one, we're not worried
- 25:11Speaker 2: about it because that's fifty million now where it's forty
- 25:13Speaker 2: million now, right, which is just that bonkers that dollar.
- 25:18Speaker 2: But that they have leaned into that strategy and there's
- 25:23Speaker 2: no looking back at this point.
- 25:24Speaker 1: No, absolutely not. All Right, Well, we've got another signing
- 25:28Speaker 1: in California that's happened, another left hander, and that is
- 25:31Speaker 1: our boy, yuse Kakuchi signing with the Los Angeles Angels.
- 25:35Speaker 1: And he's coming off of really like a Jeckyll and
- 25:39Speaker 1: High type of year. Between in Toronto, he put up
- 25:42Speaker 1: a four seventy five ERA overall one one hundred and
- 25:45Speaker 1: fifteen and two thirds innings, but they did come with
- 25:48Speaker 1: a three sixty six fifth, so he certainly was not
- 25:51Speaker 1: getting helped by his defense in Toronto. Got traded at
- 25:54Speaker 1: the deadline to the Houston Astros and was on fire
- 25:58Speaker 1: for them down to stretch. In ten starts with the Astros,
- 26:01Speaker 1: went five to one with a two seventy ERA over
- 26:04Speaker 1: sixty innings pitched. And I mean, I think this is
- 26:07Speaker 1: a pretty straightforward question about Kokuchi going to the Angels.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Which Kakuchi do you think shows up there in Los Angeles?
- 26:15Speaker 1: Is it more of that Toronto one that we saw
- 26:18Speaker 1: at the beginning of the season or is it the
- 26:19Speaker 1: one that we saw with the Astros that looked like
- 26:22Speaker 1: a front end starter.
- 26:24Speaker 2: This this, this one is tough. Like there are two
- 26:28Speaker 2: clear dynamics pulling in opposite directions with this. One. One
- 26:31Speaker 2: is the Angels and their ability to do anything logical
- 26:38Speaker 2: with development and pitching. The other is Kakuchi made a
- 26:43Speaker 2: significant change in his approach with Houston and he you know,
- 26:48Speaker 2: he dropped the cutter, he moved the slider, and it
- 26:52Speaker 2: worked for him. It absolutely worked for him, and with
- 26:55Speaker 2: that drastic of a change. It wasn't just a slight change.
- 26:59Speaker 2: It was a stick change. You know that he figured
- 27:02Speaker 2: they he figured that out, The Astros figured that out.
- 27:05Speaker 2: The Angels aren't completely buried in the sand, and they
- 27:09Speaker 2: know that happened too. So I'm gonna I'm gonna say
- 27:13Speaker 2: is gonna hold. I'm gonna call it eighty percent of
- 27:16Speaker 2: the value that he had in Houston. There's gonna be
- 27:19Speaker 2: There's gonna be some regression there because I just can't
- 27:23Speaker 2: fully get past the angels pitching development. And I think
- 27:28Speaker 2: players are gonna adjust the kind of Kokuchi's arsenal adjustment.
- 27:33Speaker 2: But if you find pitches at work, you stick with them.
- 27:36Speaker 2: And we've seen this before with guys like Charlie Morton
- 27:40Speaker 2: and other guys like that that made a pitch mixed change,
- 27:43Speaker 2: and then when they went to do the team, they
- 27:44Speaker 2: just stuck with it and they were phenomenal. And actually
- 27:48Speaker 2: Morton better comp than I realized was with Houston. He
- 27:52Speaker 2: did that and then he left and kept it.
- 27:54Speaker 1: So that's a that's a really good point. I didn't
- 27:57Speaker 1: thought about that in terms of like that type of
- 27:59Speaker 1: switch seeing it historically that like, yeah, I was going
- 28:03Speaker 1: to take the easy route too and say that it's
- 28:04Speaker 1: probably somewhere in between of like Houston and Toronto. What
- 28:08Speaker 1: Kakuchi put up last year, which essentially was his twenty
- 28:11Speaker 1: twenty three with like a mid Threezra. I think the
- 28:14Speaker 1: one thing that I'm going to be interested to see
- 28:17Speaker 1: what Kukukuji can do with the Angels is that whip.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Like if there's anything where he's always kind of held
- 28:24Speaker 1: you back from a fantasy perspective, it's been in the
- 28:27Speaker 1: whip in like something that I've tried to overlook it
- 28:31Speaker 1: with my love for him over the years, but it's
- 28:33Speaker 1: also really tough because it does grind on you pretty quickly,
- 28:37Speaker 1: given how many innings he's pitched, and you know, he's
- 28:40Speaker 1: walking in with a career one thirty four whip over
- 28:44Speaker 1: an eight hundred and nine and two thirds innings. So
- 28:48Speaker 1: you're looking at somebody who's put down a lot of
- 28:51Speaker 1: work of just high whip, and you're trying to hope
- 28:55Speaker 1: that some of the things that he learned in Houston
- 28:58Speaker 1: stick in terms of being the zone more often, maybe
- 29:02Speaker 1: getting trusting his defense a little bit more, because he
- 29:05Speaker 1: probably fell out of that habit in Toronto that just
- 29:08Speaker 1: had a tough defense behind him. You know, when you
- 29:10Speaker 1: have flat Grayo Junior at third base behind you.
- 29:15Speaker 2: We'll see, We'll see what you see.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Okay, all right. Next move that we have is a trade.
- 29:22Speaker 1: This someone had been kind of rumored for a while,
- 29:24Speaker 1: so it feels like it happened a long time ago,
- 29:26Speaker 1: but was only executed just over a week ago, I guess.
- 29:31Speaker 1: And so that is Jonathan India and Brady's singer were
- 29:34Speaker 1: swapped between Cincinnati and Kansas City. Pretty much straight up.
- 29:38Speaker 1: There was Joey Weimer was also in this trade too,
- 29:41Speaker 1: who Honestly, I don't know if I could have told
- 29:44Speaker 1: you he was in the Cincinnati system. I missed that move.
- 29:47Speaker 1: But India will move over to Kansas City, singer over
- 29:51Speaker 1: to Cincinnati, and honestly, I'm having trouble finding any kind
- 29:57Speaker 1: of like great things for either player here because India's
- 30:01Speaker 1: moving to a park that is a significant downgrade from Cincinnati.
- 30:05Speaker 1: We've talked on here about how Kansas City actually plays
- 30:08Speaker 1: a little more hitter friendly than it's known for. But
- 30:11Speaker 1: the problem is, like those home runs that India provided
- 30:14Speaker 1: are gonna absolutely dry up. He's not necessarily like a
- 30:17Speaker 1: barrel rate or exit velocity monster that he got all
- 30:21Speaker 1: of his home runs mostly on the generosity of Great
- 30:24Speaker 1: American Ballpark, and so going to Kaufman, where it is
- 30:28Speaker 1: a tougher home run park, is going to make it
- 30:30Speaker 1: difficult for him, but might see it a boost in
- 30:32Speaker 1: his average. He's a career two fifty three hitter. On
- 30:36Speaker 1: the other side, you have Singer moving from a decent
- 30:39Speaker 1: park for pitching, even though it is a hitter's park,
- 30:42Speaker 1: but just because it like contained the home runs. And
- 30:45Speaker 1: Singer does have issues I think allowing harder contact and
- 30:49Speaker 1: has throughout his career and is now going to Great
- 30:52Speaker 1: American Ballpark in Cincinnati. So am I being too negative
- 30:57Speaker 1: here with these players? Are or are there good traits
- 31:00Speaker 1: that you see in either of them that could kind
- 31:02Speaker 1: of shine through with their new teams.
- 31:06Speaker 2: I want to disagree with you, I really do, because
- 31:09Speaker 2: it makes the podcast better. But this is this is
- 31:12Speaker 2: one of those when it makes so much sense for
- 31:14Speaker 2: the real world teams what they're doing. You know, India
- 31:16Speaker 2: has been on his way out of Cincinnati for like
- 31:18Speaker 2: a year and a half, and you know Singer like
- 31:23Speaker 2: he's kind of fond with resurgence and he's kind of
- 31:25Speaker 2: found his way, and the Reds need pitching and the
- 31:28Speaker 2: Royals need hitting. It just makes so much sense. But
- 31:31Speaker 2: from a fantasy perspective, there couldn't be probably a worse
- 31:35Speaker 2: move for both players. Like it just doesn't make any sense,
- 31:39Speaker 2: and it's gonna you know, you you don't really want
- 31:41Speaker 2: to touch a brief singer in Cincinnati, great American ballpark.
- 31:44Speaker 2: It's just it's scary. I was already a little leery
- 31:46Speaker 2: of him in Kansas City. But you just hope that,
- 31:48Speaker 2: you know, you could run and Barrett whereas you know India, like, yeah,
- 31:53Speaker 2: he can set the table and maybe get some more bats,
- 31:55Speaker 2: but like the pop is gonna drop, and we already
- 32:00Speaker 2: I think we're fading India to a degree, So both
- 32:03Speaker 2: of these guys get a downgrade. I'm probably not touching
- 32:06Speaker 2: Singer at all in drafts. India is probably looking at
- 32:09Speaker 2: kind of a you know, corner middle infield type scenario,
- 32:15Speaker 2: maybe utility. Like you're just not investing in probably in
- 32:18Speaker 2: any of these guys for twenty twenty five.
- 32:21Speaker 1: No, I'm impressed that you were able to keep going
- 32:24Speaker 1: after you dropped the line of podcast history. The pop
- 32:27Speaker 1: is going to drop.
- 32:30Speaker 2: I've been preparing for this for a long time.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Sure roster resource currently has Jonathan India slated as the
- 32:37Speaker 1: DH in the leadoff slot for the Royals. Do you
- 32:41Speaker 1: like What do you think about that?
- 32:43Speaker 2: I Actually, I'm not surprised because he is decent from
- 32:47Speaker 2: an on base perspective, and he can kind of work
- 32:49Speaker 2: counts and things like that, So I think that is
- 32:51Speaker 2: kind of what they're expecting for him. To try to
- 32:53Speaker 2: get him a little bit more on base presence and
- 32:57Speaker 2: I can get a little bit more out of Wit
- 32:59Speaker 2: is probably the strategy there. So I think they do
- 33:02Speaker 2: view him at the top of the order bat. I
- 33:04Speaker 2: don't know if I one hundred percent do, but hey,
- 33:06Speaker 2: they are, they're looking for hitting, so I would be
- 33:09Speaker 2: shocked to see them give them Alisa a run at
- 33:12Speaker 2: the top of the order.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I mean I think that's something to keep
- 33:15Speaker 1: our eye on, especially as we get into draft season.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I mean, I'd be interested in India in terms of
- 33:19Speaker 1: like a really back end second base or am I option,
- 33:22Speaker 1: just because Yeah, if he's going to hit in front
- 33:24Speaker 1: of Bobby Witt Junior and Past Squatch and Salvi Perez,
- 33:30Speaker 1: that's a pretty nice lineup behind him that you're looking
- 33:33Speaker 1: at probably some sneaky runs, especially given those OBP skills
- 33:37Speaker 1: that we've seen from Jonathan India in the past. Okay, well,
- 33:41Speaker 1: we've got a couple of more signings that these just
- 33:46Speaker 1: went down the past couple of days, so they are
- 33:48Speaker 1: very fresh and hot off the press. The first one
- 33:51Speaker 1: we have is the New York Mets signing Frankie Montas
- 33:54Speaker 1: to a two year deal for seventeen mil a year.
- 33:58Speaker 1: And so Frankie Mantas is coming off of what was
- 34:02Speaker 1: a pretty difficult year honestly overall four eighty four era,
- 34:06Speaker 1: but it was a five oh one when he was
- 34:08Speaker 1: with Cincinnati for his first nineteen starts, and then when
- 34:11Speaker 1: he was traded to Milwaukee, he was able to shave
- 34:14Speaker 1: half a run off of that down to four fifty five.
- 34:17Speaker 1: But the nice thing is that you saw the strikeouts
- 34:20Speaker 1: really bump up when he moved over to Milwaukee. It
- 34:22Speaker 1: was only seven and a half k per nine when
- 34:25Speaker 1: he was in Cincinnati. Milwaukee made a little bit of
- 34:28Speaker 1: a tweak to that arsenal and he was able to
- 34:30Speaker 1: increase the k rate to eleven k per nine, So
- 34:34Speaker 1: that kind of put him back in territory of what
- 34:36Speaker 1: we had been seeing from Frankie Montas back in like
- 34:39Speaker 1: twenty twenty one with the Oakland A's when he finished
- 34:42Speaker 1: sixth in the sy Young That feels like a fever
- 34:44Speaker 1: dream back then. But this maybe you need to talk
- 34:49Speaker 1: me down on this a little bit, because I'm really
- 34:51Speaker 1: loving this move for Frankie Montas in the New York
- 34:54Speaker 1: Mets for our fantasy game, mostly because like, this is
- 34:58Speaker 1: the classic type of picture that like, especially if you're
- 35:02Speaker 1: in twelve teamers, fifteen teamers. Maybe not quite drafting now,
- 35:08Speaker 1: but especially like when you get deep into draft season.
- 35:10Speaker 1: This is the type of player where he's not gonna
- 35:13Speaker 1: pop out after that four point eight ra last year.
- 35:16Speaker 1: But if you can stream his home starts in New
- 35:20Speaker 1: York in front of that team, great chance that wins,
- 35:23Speaker 1: great home ballpark. We saw some improvement in Frankie Montes's stuff.
- 35:28Speaker 1: I love what the Mets have shown in terms of
- 35:32Speaker 1: I didn't expect them to be able to get anything
- 35:35Speaker 1: out of Luis Sevarino, but got a solid season of him,
- 35:39Speaker 1: got a solid season of Sean Manya that I think
- 35:41Speaker 1: there is a little bit of magic dust going on
- 35:45Speaker 1: there in New York on the Mets side in terms
- 35:47Speaker 1: of being able to convert borderline pitchers into something a
- 35:52Speaker 1: little more usable for our fantasy game. So I'm certainly
- 35:56Speaker 1: not talking to anything like a huge must target, But
- 35:59Speaker 1: if you're looking at somebody to round out your ninth
- 36:01Speaker 1: pitching spot and at the draft table, you can certainly
- 36:04Speaker 1: do far worse than Frankie Montes. What do you think?
- 36:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I was about I was gonna start talking you
- 36:08Speaker 2: off off the ledge there until you said twelve and
- 36:10Speaker 2: fifteen teamers and then I'm like, okay, yeah, no, that's
- 36:13Speaker 2: kind of where where I'm at with Frankie Montes. And
- 36:15Speaker 2: actually he made all the points I was gonna make
- 36:17Speaker 2: on him, which is like the Mets all of a
- 36:18Speaker 2: sudden feel like they know how to create pictures and
- 36:22Speaker 2: get something out of guys, Like I didn't feel like
- 36:25Speaker 2: i'd say that ever, And with Manaia and sever Reno
- 36:29Speaker 2: this last year, it seems like they took some of
- 36:30Speaker 2: these guys that were like cast off, like had a
- 36:34Speaker 2: ton of skills and just these is a second breath
- 36:37Speaker 2: and a second chance, and that's what it feels like
- 36:39Speaker 2: with Montas, like he has the potential there, but he's
- 36:43Speaker 2: kind of you can see the skills have just like
- 36:45Speaker 2: slightly degraded since his Oakland days and the he's lost
- 36:49Speaker 2: maybe a mile on the off a mile per hour
- 36:52Speaker 2: off of the fastball, you know, his walks have creeped
- 36:55Speaker 2: up just a little and and most that's all been
- 36:58Speaker 2: kind of aligned with injury for the most part. And
- 37:01Speaker 2: so that formula of what we seen with Severarino is
- 37:07Speaker 2: like almost identical. And so he is really one of
- 37:10Speaker 2: those ones that I would I've been paying attention like
- 37:12Speaker 2: the offseason news things like that, and I also look
- 37:16Speaker 2: at it as you know, I think people were shocked,
- 37:18Speaker 2: like he got a big contract, Like I think it's
- 37:20Speaker 2: the price.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Of pitching these days. Yeah, I think it is.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Like you're happy to get a guy on a two
- 37:25Speaker 2: year deal because you're not so over your your heels
- 37:29Speaker 2: that you're you're gonna regret it, but you're only paying
- 37:32Speaker 2: seventeen million, Like it's just we're coming out a year
- 37:36Speaker 2: after we talked about Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson going
- 37:39Speaker 2: to the Cardinals for twelve million dollars a year and
- 37:42Speaker 2: be like, well, it's just the price of you know,
- 37:45Speaker 2: fifty year old pictures that you're hoping to get something
- 37:47Speaker 2: out of, like Montas has upside, So I think he's interesting.
- 37:52Speaker 2: I think you're probably pegging him and right about the
- 37:54Speaker 2: right spot kind of when you're taking the dart throws
- 37:57Speaker 2: at the end of the draft. I think Mantas is
- 37:59Speaker 2: one of the really interesting dark throws, just like we
- 38:02Speaker 2: talked about Mania last year, just like we talked about Severino,
- 38:05Speaker 2: and he actually might get a little bump up because
- 38:07Speaker 2: of that result.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Yeah, And I also like that, like you might be
- 38:12Speaker 1: able to get some decent volume out of Montas too.
- 38:14Speaker 1: That like that shoulder injury, I think that probably played
- 38:18Speaker 1: a part in his performance earlier in the year, and
- 38:20Speaker 1: so as he just kind of works his way back
- 38:23Speaker 1: more and more, you could see you know, one hundred
- 38:26Speaker 1: and fifty hundred and sixty innings out of Montess, which
- 38:28Speaker 1: would be really brilliant if you can get something around
- 38:31Speaker 1: like a league average ra and you know nine nine
- 38:35Speaker 1: and a half K nine something like that with the Mets,
- 38:37Speaker 1: that like it could be as a really sneaky value.
- 38:40Speaker 1: So certainly, I think I'll probably end up having some shares,
- 38:43Speaker 1: but certainly in that situation where like you know, you're
- 38:46Speaker 1: filling out the back end of your your rotation and
- 38:49Speaker 1: don't be dipping too much deeper than that until you
- 38:52Speaker 1: kind of see some flashes from Mantas in the spring. Okay,
- 38:56Speaker 1: we had another pitcher signed yesterday who honestly, it was
- 39:00Speaker 1: just about the same. Deal is two years, twenty nine
- 39:02Speaker 1: million for Matthew Boyd signing with the Chicago Cubs, and
- 39:06Speaker 1: he's coming off of a pretty solid thirty nine and
- 39:10Speaker 1: two thirds innings eight starts with the Cleveland Guardians last year.
- 39:14Speaker 1: He put up a two seventy two ERA with a
- 39:17Speaker 1: ten point four K nine and started for them in
- 39:21Speaker 1: the playoffs too, So he was really like a hot
- 39:24Speaker 1: pickup down the stretch too, as people were just desperate
- 39:28Speaker 1: for pitching and Matt Boyd popped out there. He's also
- 39:31Speaker 1: now the third Southpaw in the Cubs rotation, which I
- 39:37Speaker 1: was looking. I think that maybe, like Jed Hoyer is
- 39:39Speaker 1: getting a little bit too in his head building his
- 39:41Speaker 1: team here in Chicago, that it's a little bit of
- 39:45Speaker 1: like that. I also I recently watched the Netflix documentary
- 39:49Speaker 1: on the four Red Sox and the Comeback, and so
- 39:52Speaker 1: Jed Hoyer was in that. Especially like when people build
- 39:57Speaker 1: pitching staffs in Boston for friend Way Park, you usually
- 40:02Speaker 1: tend to go more right handed so that you can
- 40:03Speaker 1: avoid the green monster. I think Jeduary is doing the
- 40:07Speaker 1: same thing here in Chicago because if you look at
- 40:09Speaker 1: this at the stat Cast park Factors of the past
- 40:12Speaker 1: three years for right handed bats, it ranks twenty eighth
- 40:17Speaker 1: in park factor with a ninety six. Left handers it
- 40:21Speaker 1: is fifteenth overall at a ninety nine. So there is
- 40:25Speaker 1: something about the way that I mean it's deeper in
- 40:28Speaker 1: left field and Wrigley, as well as just the way
- 40:31Speaker 1: that the wind works and everything like that that I
- 40:33Speaker 1: think this is part of why Imanaga kind of came
- 40:36Speaker 1: out and surprised this last year. This is why Justin
- 40:39Speaker 1: Steele like it works, is that he's making half of
- 40:43Speaker 1: his starts at home. And so I'm feeling like Matt
- 40:47Speaker 1: Boyd's actually in that hopper of like the you know,
- 40:51Speaker 1: the bingo balls of like the pitchers. When it gets
- 40:54Speaker 1: to the spot where I've got that one one or
- 40:57Speaker 1: two spots in my rotation, Frankie Montass is there too.
- 41:00Speaker 1: I might be baking to Matt Boyd picks because another
- 41:03Speaker 1: great home streamer I think to start the season. Nice
- 41:06Speaker 1: thing about these types of picks too, is you know,
- 41:08Speaker 1: if he gets injured or if this stuff doesn't look good,
- 41:11Speaker 1: you just kind of move on to the next hot pitcher.
- 41:14Speaker 1: So are you gonna reel me back in here? Or
- 41:17Speaker 1: what do you think about Matthew Boyd landing in Chicago
- 41:20Speaker 1: and becoming a home start streamer for our fantasy game? Yeah?
- 41:24Speaker 2: I mean Boyd even more in montass has had such
- 41:26Speaker 2: an up and down career, like he's shown these flashes.
- 41:29Speaker 2: He's shown these flashes of the brilliance and you're like, yes,
- 41:32Speaker 2: he's breaking out because you know, you go back to
- 41:35Speaker 2: like twenty nineteen and he had one hundred and eighty
- 41:38Speaker 2: five innings, eleven and a half, k for nine, two
- 41:41Speaker 2: and a half walk for nine. His ERA was actually
- 41:44Speaker 2: four and a half, but his XCRA and his x
- 41:47Speaker 2: FIP were like three eight, And you're like, man, this
- 41:49Speaker 2: guy's riding on the precipice. He had some unluck, you know,
- 41:52Speaker 2: has some poor luck things like that. He's always had
- 41:55Speaker 2: trouble shaking the long ball, and that that's what's gonna
- 41:58Speaker 2: be interesting for him. You know, spend the majority of
- 42:00Speaker 2: time in Detroit, and he it seems like when he
- 42:04Speaker 2: went to Cleveland he kind of benefited there and Chicago's
- 42:10Speaker 2: not great for the log ball, so I think that
- 42:12Speaker 2: is a merit to him. But you know, you can
- 42:16Speaker 2: it's not hard to look at him and go like,
- 42:18Speaker 2: there's intrigue, there's something worthwhile here. So I think I
- 42:21Speaker 2: like your combination, you know, combination there. I saw him
- 42:24Speaker 2: very similar to Mantas at this point, and I'm curious
- 42:27Speaker 2: which one if you're in drafts today, which one would
- 42:30Speaker 2: you be picking them off the board? First?
- 42:34Speaker 1: Definitely Mantas, so like, even though they're kind of in
- 42:37Speaker 1: like the same tier, Montess is definitely towards the upper
- 42:41Speaker 1: part of that tier, mostly because of what I was
- 42:42Speaker 1: talking about with that volume, Like Montas has the chance
- 42:45Speaker 1: to actually give you a full season as opposed to
- 42:49Speaker 1: your wish casting that on Matthew Boyd at this point.
- 42:51Speaker 2: I mean he's had a full season the last five
- 42:53Speaker 2: years combined.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Exactly. It will but it will pop instant. So like
- 43:01Speaker 1: I think, if like you're looking for, it'll obviously depend
- 43:05Speaker 1: on league size. I think the shallower it is, maybe
- 43:07Speaker 1: I will start shading towards Boyd because like he's got
- 43:12Speaker 1: the bigger strikeout potential. But if you're in a twelve
- 43:15Speaker 1: team or fifteen teamer where you need some volume because
- 43:19Speaker 1: you just don't know where it's gonna come from. I
- 43:21Speaker 1: would lean Montest at this point. What about you?
- 43:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm right there with you. I feel
- 43:28Speaker 2: like Montess is the has the higher floor, similar ceiling.
- 43:36Speaker 2: But if we're talking like a daily fantasy here, BOYD
- 43:39Speaker 2: might be fun to roll out a few times to
- 43:42Speaker 2: see what happens.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Yeah, especially like if you find a good game where
- 43:46Speaker 1: like it's blown in and regular exactly, he's gonna put
- 43:49Speaker 1: up like a fifteen K game.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Yep.
- 43:53Speaker 1: All right. Next transaction we have is a role this
- 43:56Speaker 1: Chapman signing with the Boston Red Sox and it looks
- 43:59Speaker 1: like he's going to come in and be the closer
- 44:01Speaker 1: because Kenley Jansen is no longer there. It's going to
- 44:05Speaker 1: be just a one year contract. And I guess the
- 44:10Speaker 1: question here's how long do you think that this is
- 44:13Speaker 1: gonna work out? Do you think Chapman can hold the
- 44:16Speaker 1: closer's job in Boston the entire year. He's coming off
- 44:19Speaker 1: of a year with the Pirates where he wracked up
- 44:21Speaker 1: fourteen saves, had a fourteen point three K nine a
- 44:25Speaker 1: three seventy nine ear ra over sixty one and two
- 44:28Speaker 1: thirds innings, But he hasn't had a walk rate below
- 44:32Speaker 1: five and a half since. I mean you could even
- 44:35Speaker 1: throw out COVID twenty twenty, so you're looking at twenty nineteen.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Walks have been a problem and it's just a matter
- 44:42Speaker 1: of time before we were just talking about this. In finway,
- 44:45Speaker 1: if you're a left handed pitcher, it's going to come
- 44:48Speaker 1: back to bite you. So all those kind of factors
- 44:51Speaker 1: put together, where are you considering a role as Chapman
- 44:55Speaker 1: as like a saves option and like in the kind
- 44:58Speaker 1: of grand scheme. Obviously we've got a lot of draft
- 45:02Speaker 1: season play out, But where do you think you've kind
- 45:04Speaker 1: of slot rold As Chapmans as a preferred closer in
- 45:07Speaker 1: your rankings?
- 45:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I definitely consider him, Like I think
- 45:11Speaker 2: right now out of the gate he is the expected closer.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Do I think he finishes the year as the closer? No,
- 45:16Speaker 2: I don't think there's any chance in the world. I
- 45:19Speaker 2: think it's a ten percent chance every month that you
- 45:23Speaker 2: take off one hundred percent chance at the begind of
- 45:24Speaker 2: the year after we get through kind of April time frame,
- 45:27Speaker 2: ninety eight seventy, like it's by the All Star breaker's
- 45:31Speaker 2: fifty to fifty. And part of that is Chapman like
- 45:34Speaker 2: he is just he Ricky Vaughan styled throws it up there.
- 45:40Speaker 2: You don't know where the thing's going. He doesn't either,
- 45:43Speaker 2: and that's what makes him scary.
- 45:45Speaker 1: But well things, but the other things.
- 45:49Speaker 2: But also you know, I see Liam Hendricks here, who
- 45:53Speaker 2: I think is just a much better pitcher, and as
- 45:56Speaker 2: he recover gets back from his his uh injury recovery
- 46:01Speaker 2: and he gets some innings and stuff like that, I
- 46:03Speaker 2: think he becomes the preferred option for Boston in the
- 46:06Speaker 2: latter half of next year. And so I think, you know,
- 46:09Speaker 2: Chapman's there too to put out some fires, because he
- 46:12Speaker 2: is that guy that when you're in a tough spot, yeah,
- 46:16Speaker 2: he's gonna he's gonna either go blow everybody away or
- 46:18Speaker 2: completely blow up. And sometimes that's just what you need.
- 46:21Speaker 2: And so I think that's exciting. From a closer ranking perspective,
- 46:26Speaker 2: I'd probably put him right around the like late teens route,
- 46:31Speaker 2: maybe the twenty spot in the closer rankings, right towards
- 46:36Speaker 2: the back of the guys that I know are closers
- 46:38Speaker 2: like is I think where I put that. I think
- 46:41Speaker 2: there's just too much variability, too much risk, too much
- 46:45Speaker 2: damage that can happen with with Chapman here and I
- 46:50Speaker 2: And this is one of those I'm completely find being wrong.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Like if if if Chapman goes and blows every way,
- 46:55Speaker 2: I'll look at it and go good for him. I'm
- 46:57Speaker 2: still happy I was not on that on that that train.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I feel you. And it's the dichonomy of
- 47:02Speaker 1: like guy that you want here for the most in
- 47:06Speaker 1: Liam Hendricks and the least in the worldest Chapman here.
- 47:09Speaker 1: That like, the one thing that does give me pause
- 47:11Speaker 1: is with Hendricks last year it wasn't going so great.
- 47:15Speaker 1: It was a second time of John surgery. Yep, he
- 47:17Speaker 1: is thirty five. The velocity wasn't coming back quite the
- 47:21Speaker 1: same way that you would think, And so that gives
- 47:24Speaker 1: me a little bit of pause. But it does feel
- 47:27Speaker 1: like a situation where if you've got Chapman, you've got
- 47:31Speaker 1: to prepare yourself to take Hendrix and probably Slayton too,
- 47:34Speaker 1: just to like really make sure that you're short up
- 47:37Speaker 1: at that Boston closer's job going into the season, that
- 47:42Speaker 1: you can plant your flag and say it's yours, but
- 47:46Speaker 1: it's gonna be tough, like you have to. I think
- 47:48Speaker 1: you're gonna have to get pretty far, like into the draft,
- 47:51Speaker 1: where you've got to be pretty desperate for saves for
- 47:54Speaker 1: me to be barking up the Roldest Chapman tree because
- 47:56Speaker 1: of a lot of what you've talked about, Like obviously
- 48:00Speaker 1: it goes a little bit against what I've been with
- 48:02Speaker 1: Craig Kimberl, like over the years in terms of like
- 48:05Speaker 1: riding that train, but like the train's been off the
- 48:08Speaker 1: rails for four years for Oldest Chapman. It's a blow
- 48:11Speaker 1: up like every other night, it feels like, And so
- 48:14Speaker 1: it doesn't seem to like string together and like become
- 48:18Speaker 1: like clusters of good stretches the way Kimberl does that.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Like you just kind of never know when the Chapman
- 48:24Speaker 1: blow ups come in. And so I guess if you're
- 48:26Speaker 1: prepared to deal with all that, certainly can you can
- 48:30Speaker 1: go that route because I think the Red Sox are
- 48:32Speaker 1: going to be pretty good, but it's going to be volatile,
- 48:35Speaker 1: very very volatile, very very volatile. Okay, we've got another
- 48:41Speaker 1: signing that has come through, and this happened yesterday and
- 48:45Speaker 1: it is near and dear to my heart as it
- 48:48Speaker 1: is one of my boys from my weekly wave of
- 48:51Speaker 1: wire columns that I'm not maybe made an appearance in
- 48:55Speaker 1: like half of my columns this past year because he
- 48:58Speaker 1: just never stopped hitting all season and just kept posting
- 49:03Speaker 1: insane barrel rates. I am, of course talking about my
- 49:06Speaker 1: boy catcher Kyle Higashioka, who signs a two year deal
- 49:11Speaker 1: with the Rangers. So it looks like it's a total
- 49:13Speaker 1: of thirteen and a half million dollars gonna be presumably
- 49:17Speaker 1: kind of splitting time there with Jonah him who had
- 49:20Speaker 1: a tough year, but Higashyoka is coming off In case
- 49:24Speaker 1: maybe you didn't notice, like if I'm reporting this news
- 49:27Speaker 1: out to you, in eighty four games, he put up
- 49:29Speaker 1: seventeen homers, forty five rbi slash two twenty two sixty three,
- 49:34Speaker 1: four seventy six that came with Oh man, it came
- 49:37Speaker 1: back down to earth. His barrel rate last year was
- 49:39Speaker 1: running in like the upper teens. It came back down
- 49:42Speaker 1: to ten point seven. But he's got a career eleven
- 49:45Speaker 1: point three barrel rate. I think that if you're looking
- 49:48Speaker 1: for a late catcher in a two catcher league, you
- 49:51Speaker 1: can certainly do way worse than Kyle Kashioka. This feels
- 49:54Speaker 1: like it could be again. Our boy Mitch Garver kind
- 49:58Speaker 1: of fits this mold too, was on Texas and did this.
- 50:01Speaker 1: So what do you think about gosh Yoka as like
- 50:04Speaker 1: a C two with this roll down with the Rangers.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I I think it's a valid play.
- 50:11Speaker 2: It's not a play I would generally make because with
- 50:13Speaker 2: my C two's I hate taking the massive batting average
- 50:17Speaker 2: hit in the five by five game, and I, uh
- 50:20Speaker 2: the Steamer projections on here is A two eighteen, and
- 50:23Speaker 2: I feel like they're spot on. Uhgawa. But you know,
- 50:28Speaker 2: if maybe you've played the game and you've really gone
- 50:31Speaker 2: after the Freddie Freemans and Louis Ryes of the world,
- 50:33Speaker 2: and at that point you've already made the mistakes, you
- 50:35Speaker 2: might as well go with Kyle Heshagawa as well. But
- 50:40Speaker 2: I think there's potential. I think that he's gonna I
- 50:42Speaker 2: just don't know that he's gonna be an everyday catcher.
- 50:44Speaker 2: I feel like they bought him kind of as an
- 50:46Speaker 2: insurance plan that he's gonna play in like seventy five
- 50:49Speaker 2: or eighty percent of the games, and he's gonna be
- 50:51Speaker 2: one of the first guys off the bench, pinch hitter
- 50:53Speaker 2: type thing. So I think there's twenty homer power in
- 50:57Speaker 2: that bat. I just think it's coming with like fifty
- 51:01Speaker 2: runs and a two fifteen betting average. And so for
- 51:06Speaker 2: US C two, maybe not the.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Worst thing in the world, but that's C two.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Yeah. But like I, I think that there's a lot
- 51:13Speaker 2: of other guys I'd rather take a gamble on that
- 51:15Speaker 2: I have see upside, And I think the upside with
- 51:17Speaker 2: Yashigawa is twenty five homers instead of twenty homers and
- 51:21Speaker 2: still all the other words. And so maybe I'm a
- 51:24Speaker 2: little too down on him, but he's probably a guy
- 51:26Speaker 2: I'm gonna steer away from. He's better defense, he's a
- 51:31Speaker 2: good defensive catcher. He brings a lot of other things
- 51:32Speaker 2: to the game along with the sneaky power.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think this is about as close
- 51:39Speaker 1: as we get to a disagreement here, because I mean
- 51:42Speaker 1: I think the he's got a little bit more upside too.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Because I'm looking at the roster resource for the Rangers.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Our boy Josh Smith is still slated as the designated
- 51:50Speaker 1: hitter on this team after winning that very prestigious selfur
- 51:53Speaker 1: Slugger Award. So we all know what Josh Smith has
- 51:57Speaker 1: in the bat, but makes it also a pretty easy platoon.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Josh Smith is left handed. I think there's a path
- 52:04Speaker 1: to a little more playing time than we would expect
- 52:08Speaker 1: for Higashiokab just because that DH spot. I think they're
- 52:11Speaker 1: gonna get him some run there given the power in
- 52:14Speaker 1: that bat.
- 52:16Speaker 2: We will see, we'll see, well, we'll come back to
- 52:18Speaker 2: this one. We'll see who's right.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and we'll see, like how many times in a
- 52:22Speaker 1: row I can write about him over the summer, as
- 52:24Speaker 1: he's just like cranking Homer's. Okay, Well, let's move on
- 52:27Speaker 1: to some Korean baseball news. So the KBO, we've got
- 52:30Speaker 1: a couple bits of news that have come out. One
- 52:33Speaker 1: just broke this afternoon, and that is I think it's
- 52:36Speaker 1: heighs Young Kim. That's what I'm gonna say, just to
- 52:39Speaker 1: distinguish it from has Young Kim, the current like infielder
- 52:43Speaker 1: who is a free agent played for the Sango Padres,
- 52:46Speaker 1: but high sound Kim is one of the upper tier
- 52:50Speaker 1: players of the KBO. Right now, he is going to
- 52:52Speaker 1: be posted. Honestly, it sounds like tomorrow, which will start
- 52:56Speaker 1: his thirty day window for teams to bid, and it's
- 52:59Speaker 1: gonna be coming in under you know, some of the
- 53:04Speaker 1: esoteric rules that we just we talked last time about
- 53:07Speaker 1: rookie Sasaki as he's being you know, put into the
- 53:10Speaker 1: international pool. But Kim will be like posted posted the
- 53:15Speaker 1: way that like you traditionally see in terms of like
- 53:18Speaker 1: Sugano coming over this offseason, Yamamoto coming over last season
- 53:23Speaker 1: and last year HAIs On Kim was able to slash well. Actually,
- 53:28Speaker 1: I've got his career tolls here, which was three h
- 53:30Speaker 1: four three sixty four four oh three in his eight
- 53:33Speaker 1: KBO seasons. Although I think it is it's almost easy
- 53:38Speaker 1: to comp him to Haskun Kim just because they're both infielders,
- 53:42Speaker 1: he should come over as a second baseman. Hasung Kim
- 53:45Speaker 1: came over with a lot more power in the bat
- 53:47Speaker 1: than Heisun Kim did, so I would almost put him
- 53:51Speaker 1: a little bit closer to Jungjo Lee. I think where
- 53:54Speaker 1: you've got a good bat, good bat to or like
- 53:57Speaker 1: a good bat in terms of like a Luisa Rye
- 54:00Speaker 1: his way back to ball skills, good glove, good fielding,
- 54:04Speaker 1: just kind of the intangibles, but without the power. And
- 54:07Speaker 1: so it was tough because Lee injured that shoulder so
- 54:11Speaker 1: early this year that we couldn't see what he could
- 54:14Speaker 1: do in major League baseball. So I'm gonna let you
- 54:18Speaker 1: take the random guess on what do you think he
- 54:20Speaker 1: Sung Kim can do coming over from KBO? Do you
- 54:25Speaker 1: think he actually like breaks camp and is in a
- 54:28Speaker 1: lineup out the gate? And are you looking at him
- 54:32Speaker 1: in any of your fantasy leagues?
- 54:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's it's such an interesting colmp to
- 54:37Speaker 2: Hassan Kim from name to they were teammates, they were
- 54:41Speaker 2: middle and field teammates for a few years in the KBO,
- 54:46Speaker 2: and I think you look at them besides the power,
- 54:50Speaker 2: their profiles were very similar at the time of coming over,
- 54:56Speaker 2: and so I think you can look kind of what
- 54:58Speaker 2: hass On Kim's done and and apply that to Huck
- 55:02Speaker 2: Huk Young Sum Kim. Good luck to the announcers on
- 55:06Speaker 2: this one if those two been up in the same game.
- 55:09Speaker 2: But I think you know, probably a you know, mid
- 55:14Speaker 2: two fifty to sixty average. I think the speed's gonna
- 55:18Speaker 2: translate relatively decent, so maybe a fifteen to twenty steel
- 55:22Speaker 2: guy with the five to ten homers. Like, I think
- 55:25Speaker 2: it's kind of what you saw with with with Hasson
- 55:28Speaker 2: Kim without the same power and Haston Kim to me
- 55:32Speaker 2: is a twenty twenty potential bat when he's you know,
- 55:36Speaker 2: fully healthy and going. He's got a lot of a
- 55:39Speaker 2: lot of potential there. So I like him. I think
- 55:41Speaker 2: he probably does sign somewhere and break camp, but I
- 55:44Speaker 2: don't think it's gonna be like with a huge market
- 55:48Speaker 2: team or something like that. I think he's gonna find
- 55:51Speaker 2: a middle deal somewhere like Seattle would not shock me,
- 55:55Speaker 2: you know, so you know, even a San Francisco would
- 55:58Speaker 2: wouldn't wouldn't shock I see a lot of those West
- 56:01Speaker 2: Coast teams being you know, at play here, So I'd
- 56:04Speaker 2: be intrigued with him, but I would temper expectations to
- 56:10Speaker 2: you know, much more of a late late draft middle
- 56:14Speaker 2: infield type with some speed play.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm trying to think of maybe like a good
- 56:20Speaker 1: comp What about Xavier Edwards, Like, do you think he's
- 56:25Speaker 1: in that build or do you think Xavior Edwards is
- 56:27Speaker 1: like a tear up of like what you would expect
- 56:29Speaker 1: from Kim.
- 56:30Speaker 3: No.
- 56:30Speaker 2: I think that's a fair, fair, fair comparison there with
- 56:33Speaker 2: both of them. Like, I think that there is kind
- 56:36Speaker 2: of Edwards might have a little bit more explosiveness from
- 56:39Speaker 2: from my perspective, and maybe a little bit more of variability,
- 56:44Speaker 2: whereas Kim, I think is, you know, he's been extremely
- 56:47Speaker 2: consistent in his career, so I think you get what
- 56:49Speaker 2: you get. But I think it is that average of
- 56:51Speaker 2: Xavier Edwards, and so I think that's about right, that
- 56:53Speaker 2: guy that you're looking at at the back of your
- 56:56Speaker 2: draft and be like, eh, I'll take a swing at
- 56:58Speaker 2: this and it works out great if I'll cut them
- 57:00Speaker 2: move on.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Yeah, especially if you're a little bit light in batting
- 57:03Speaker 1: average and stolen bases, I think there are certainly worst
- 57:07Speaker 1: routes you can go. And I mean I think, especially
- 57:09Speaker 1: at this point, like if you're doing drafting right now
- 57:13Speaker 1: in early December, your prices on High Sun Kim are
- 57:16Speaker 1: going to be pretty low. I mean, they're gonna start
- 57:18Speaker 1: bumping up now that he's gonna be posted tomorrow. But like,
- 57:21Speaker 1: until he finds a landing spot, you can get him
- 57:24Speaker 1: relatively free. So I think if you're looking in really
- 57:27Speaker 1: deep like drafting holds and stuff like that right now,
- 57:30Speaker 1: I think it's a decent name to pop because stolen bases,
- 57:33Speaker 1: I think where he's going in drafts right now, so
- 57:36Speaker 1: late is difficult to find. Okay, I've got one more,
- 57:41Speaker 1: really really deep piece of news just because I haven't
- 57:43Speaker 1: seen this break anywhere else except for when I was
- 57:47Speaker 1: going through MLB trade rumors to update like our rundown
- 57:50Speaker 1: and get the news. And it sounds like there are
- 57:54Speaker 1: teams that are out there that are interested in former
- 57:57Speaker 1: Major League player now in the KBO Socrates Brito, who is,
- 58:02Speaker 1: believe it or not, now thirty five years old or
- 58:04Speaker 1: thirty two years old and has been posting really solid
- 58:09Speaker 1: numbers while he's been in Korea. He's posted two straight
- 58:13Speaker 1: years of twenty plus homers. This past year he hit
- 58:16Speaker 1: three ten, three point fifty nine five sixteen with twenty
- 58:20Speaker 1: six homers and thirteen stolen bases. This was a guy
- 58:23Speaker 1: when he was coming through the Arizona system was a
- 58:26Speaker 1: really hot name, especially back in like twenty eighteen. Is
- 58:30Speaker 1: especially when I'm thinking about when he came through the
- 58:33Speaker 1: miners as a twenty five year old in Triple A
- 58:35Speaker 1: and posted a seventeen homer fifteen stolen baseline. Had a
- 58:40Speaker 1: lot of like hype in terms of just like all
- 58:43Speaker 1: round bat in speed power combo I guess I'm gonna
- 58:49Speaker 1: get straight to the point and ask any interest here
- 58:52Speaker 1: in like terms of like really deep dynasty, really deep
- 58:56Speaker 1: draft and hold where you might be able to see, Hey,
- 58:59Speaker 1: like I you know, so any skills that you've seen
- 59:02Speaker 1: Brito put up in the KBO that has shown development
- 59:05Speaker 1: since his time when he was over here in the
- 59:07Speaker 1: Majors and the miners, that might give you hope that
- 59:10Speaker 1: he could find something kind of akin to what Eric
- 59:14Speaker 1: James did when he came back from KBO. Maybe not
- 59:17Speaker 1: that level of power, but you're looking at maybe of
- 59:21Speaker 1: a more of a power speed combo here at Brito.
- 59:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny you say that you saw you saw me.
- 59:27Speaker 2: We're on a video call where we do this and
- 59:29Speaker 2: you saw me visual physically react to your comment there.
- 59:33Speaker 2: It's because I've got Baseball Reference paid for. Eric Tams
- 59:36Speaker 2: pulled up right now. Oh no, because that's that was
- 59:39Speaker 2: what was in my head, and I was like, like,
- 59:41Speaker 2: I feel like when Eric Tams was like in that conversation,
- 59:45Speaker 2: very similar age. He was like thirty and but the
- 59:49Speaker 2: numbers he was putting up in the KBO were like
- 59:52Speaker 2: a video game. We're talking like bay Ruth three fifty
- 59:56Speaker 2: averagege forty homers, like it was just insane. And then
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: he comes over and he has decent but like he
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: got like sixty to seventy percent of the power and
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: he's got like, you know, sixty seven percent averageing like that.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Like so like let's just take that and pry it
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: to Brito. A guy in a similar situation versus like
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: a young guy likes somebody like a Kim or somebody
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: that's coming over that as growth and they're still learning first.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Another guy that's kind of was known quantity in the
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: in the state side, Well, if you apply those to Brito,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: he's like a ten homer, ten steal, two fifty guy.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: And maybe I'm probably conflating this a little bit, but
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: I'm just not that that excited about Brito here. I
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: don't think there's enough growth. It's not like he all
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: of a sudden did anything that other guys when they
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: go over to the KBO haven't done. Maybe he showed a
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: little bit more athleticism things like that in three years
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: is nice, But I look at him as like he
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: comes over as maybe a third outfield or on a
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: lower tier team, or worth outfielder on an upper tier
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: team and I'm not really interested in all draft tables,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: am I am I too harsh on him. I just
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: I just I can't believe it. I just I just
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: I can't I can't buy it.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: I mean, I think that there's probably there are leagues.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: I think there's probably relevant to where it's really deep
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: dynasty stuff, especially where you're in like some of those
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: dynasty leagues where you're kind of scraping for every person
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: who kind of comes up and gets a starting job.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Like this is also like a fantastic profile where like
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: if Soccrate's breedo also lands in Colorado, then like then
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: then he's like on a ble and like all sorts
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: of leagues, you know, but it's taking that flyer. But
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: I do think that there's a chance where on a
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: second division team he's gonna carve out some playing time
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: because partly because it's gonna require a couple million dollars
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: to bring him over that like the team is gonna
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: have to invest in him a little bit. And I
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: do see in his numbers with the KBO. I mean,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: I'm not exactly like an expert on how like KBO
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: numbers translate into MLB projections, but it does look like
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: he's making more contact and like has cut the k rate.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: So if he's kind of put something together over there
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: in Korea and has better bat toball skills, then you
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: might be able to see Brito get to some of
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: that potential he had. And yeah, it could be a
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: very sneaky kind of fifteen to fifteen ish season that
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: doesn't sound terribly sexy, but in super deep leagues like
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: that can be an absolute salve considering he is absolutely free.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe an l AL only type league that would
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: be a little bit more interesting. So that's fair, I'll
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: give you that in the deeper leagues, but I'm I'm
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: not holding my breath here.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I just also wanted to plan in our flag is
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: like the one podcast talking about soccrates Brito in the
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: first week of December and looking forward to reviving that
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: player tag on ras ball after we get this posted
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: up and up.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: Well time has been used in five years.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gooda have been a while. Okay, well that
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: covers us for the real baseball news out there, but
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: we do have a handful of baseball card news that
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: has come out since we last talked, and updates the
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: calendar releases as well that we've covered this over the
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: past couple pods that this is a really big time
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: for baseball card releases around the holidays and partly like
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: making sure that they get all the revenue out the
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: door that they can over at Tops and Fanatics. But
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: the first piece of news we have is that the
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: MVP buyback program is back into live. So they've been
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: running this now for two straight years, which is well,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: I guess this will be the third year that Tops
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: has run this, And it's kind of funny that going
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: back to the original reason for this was that they
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: butchered the release of twenty twenty two Tops chrumb so
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: badly that they put this in place that people could
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: exchange cards of the MVP winners to be able to
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: get credit at their local hobby hobby shops and exchange
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: it for anything. So, I mean, I know with our
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: hobby shops, like when I've had these buyback cards that
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: I walk in and it's pretty much cash because the
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: way that they work in their relationship with Tops as
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: a you know, exclusive distributor. Then they turn around and
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Tops gives them just straight credit or cash for the
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: cards that they've exchanged. The one wrinkle here this year
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: is that we have the first back to back MVP
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: in terms of Otani obviously jumped leagues from AL to NL,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: but with that they've got an entire set of what
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: they've been doing with these other previously bought back MVP
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: cards is stamping them and re releasing them in the
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: next year of TOPS. And so the twenty twenty three
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: stamped Otani cards have been out there and pulled their
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: numbered and they've got like the stamp that says they
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: the twenty twenty three MVP. So for the twenty twenty
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: four buy back, these twenty twenty three stamped cards, which
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: were numbered pretty limited, really hard to get your hands
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: on because it was Otani as well, have special buybacks
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: related to them because each of them had like different numberings,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: and so it is a fun little wrinkle. The negative alone,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: which was of fifty of the twenty twenty three MVP
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: buy back, will give you one thousand dollars in buybacks
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: at your local car chops. Just the base refractor is
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: four hundred dollars as of one ninety nine. And so
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: if you have any of those, certainly something significant that
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: you're you're sitting on the rest of the prices for
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: this year are kind of wonky, I would say, compared
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: to what they've been, Like it's only forty bucks for
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: a negative, only twenty bucks for the base image variation,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: which you can totally get more on the market for that.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: I'm looking at the they'll only give you two hundred
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: bucks for a frozen or a red refractor.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Or one of one, which is the super factors is
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: two hundred bucks's.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: Which is they're not going to get any of those
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: back because you can get more on the market straight
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: up for the card value of those. Same with the
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: logo fractors too, I think the logo factors are set
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: up to only be one hundred bucks. I haven't checked
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: in on the price of a Judge or Otani logo
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: fractor on eBay lately, but I'm guessing it's probably more
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: than that. But like they're they're hot cards, so it's
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: not It does feel like this program's probably running out
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: a little bit of steam just based on that pricing
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: compared to where it's been. But what do you think?
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on this? And kind of like
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: the historic moment of having the stamped cards be returnable too.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I personally, I really liked the MVP
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: buyback program. I think it didn't work as well this
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: year as they would have hoped because the gosh darn
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: MVP races were so obvious for so long. Because what
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: I think is really interesting is when the MVP races
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: aren't clear at the time of release of tops Chrome,
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: and you can see these guys who like are in
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: the discussion in the top three or four potential, and
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: if they have a good last few months, like their
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: card value is just trying to kind of creep up,
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: and you know, and you're just kind of holding them.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: And that's what it was. That first and second year
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: of this is just like, hey, you know, you backed it.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: Especially that first year we the other gold Schmid and
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: you know, I don't think you didn't see it coming,
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: but he was not a slam dunk to get that,
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: and you just really backed into his cards. They were
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: they were incredibly cheap, and then you know, they had
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: announced this this program, and so when they announced, it's like, hey,
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: you were buying these gold Smiths for a buck or
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: fifty cents things like that, and then that was what's exciting.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: And I think the second years you had some of
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: that where that it wasn't always certain what was going
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: to happen. You know, it's a Kenya guy was okay.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: But you know, I hope that it around because I
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: like I like that that effect of it. I also
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: love the fact that they did something different with the
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: double stamps, because I don't think that the collect the
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: common collector, would have expected that. I think they were
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: treated like, you know, a unique card and something like that.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: And now it's put in a really dicey situation to
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: be like, do I take that money? Do I take
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: that for eight hundred thousand dollars for this card that
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: I probably paid a pretty penny for because it was
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: so unique, But how do you pass up the guaranteed sale?
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: And so I think it's an interesting dynamic, something they've
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: another wrinkle they put into it. So I hope they
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: keep it around. I hope that it comes back. I
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: just hope the MVP races are a little bit closer
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: so it gives us a little more intrigue as the
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: season goes on to talk.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: About Yeah, I agree, that would be fun to be
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: able to have like three or four candidates in each league,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: and that way you're kind of like watching the ebbs
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: and flows of these base cards, because you're gonna get
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: twenty bucks for a basic car card when you can
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: just kind of pull it pretty easily out of a
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: blaster pack. That you know, if you get both of
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: the MVPs and your blaster pack, you've already paid for
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: your blaster. So I do hope that that happens for
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: next year. So the other news that we have is
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: just kind of general tops, Chrome update releases or like polls.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: In our last pod, which was number sixty eight, we
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: cover the overview of that checklist and everything involved, especially
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: the big cards that everybody's looking for, the MLB debut
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: patch cards, and those are related to when a rookie
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: makes his debut, he wears that patch on the sleeve,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: goes into the card, signs the card. It's a one
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: of one, really fantastic kind of program because it's the
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: only thing that really links to like a direct piece
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: of history that goes into new cards sets the way
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: these debut patches do. And so I'll link to there's
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: been a bunch pulled and they're on Reddit. Actually this
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: is kind of a couple weeks old already, and so
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: especially if you follow TOPS on socials, you'll see more
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: of them get pulled. Of the significant ones, I know
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: the La de la Cruz has been pulled, but we're
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: still looking for the Paul Skeens one. Which it's kind
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: of funny how quickly this bit of news fizzled out.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: But if you weren't aware in the time between we
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: recorded that podcast, in this one, there was a whole
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: bounty going on where the pirates are offering, among other things,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: behind home plate seats for thirty years if you hand
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: over the Paul Skins card to them, along with lots
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: of other things, then Paul Skeenes and Livy Dunn andded
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: on Livy Dunn so that you could watch a game
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: in her suite with her, and so things really took off.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: I can tell that people actually like checked in on
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: the pod because we did a great overview of TOPS
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: Chrome update that release in episode sixty eight. Go check
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: it out. But we're kind of running out of runway
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: of like cards that are wanted out of this product
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: because we've also had both of the super fractors of
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: the Skins bass and the Auto be pulled, So those
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: have been out there and are going to sold for
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: nine figures, especially on the auto, if not more, and
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: you're just kind of running out of more and more
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: Skin cards every day. I think I've seen a couple
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: of the reds Now both Auto and bass, but still
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: not that pro debut patch. So it is a little
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: bit of like the Wanka Golden Ticket. But it'll be
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: interesting to see where that Paul Ski card surface is
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: because we are kind of at this point. We are
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: three weeks out from that release date, and you know,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: usually all these things churn pretty quickly, especially given what
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: we've got and the releases coming up. So TOPS is
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: gonna need this to be found so they can keep
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: writing their momentum. Unless you're sitting on it over there,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: brew you sitting on that Paul Skins card? And what
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: would you do if you did have it? Would you
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: take that bound from the pirates or are you going
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: to take this card tuck it away in your PC
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: or are you going to move it on to an
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: auction house?
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: Well, you know me and I cannot talk that thing
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: at the PC. I'm not I'm not. I'm a collector,
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: but I'm not. I'm not that, I'm not. No, I
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: couldn't do it. Yeah, to me, it's one of those
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: really interesting dynamics because this is one of the biggest
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: cards out there, and you're right, you could take this
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: an auction house and you could get I don't know
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: what number you're going to get. I think they throw
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: it like one hundred k or something like that. It's
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: like the number, but what the Pirates are is offering
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: is actually extremely valuable. And I don't know the details,
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: Like they make it really clear what all the detail are.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: But like you can play a softball game with your
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: team with like a bunch of buddies at P and
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: C Park, you have to do the Libby done? And
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: then was it thirty years of behind home plate? Did
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: they say it was two seats it was? I don't
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: think it was. And so like, let just do the
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: math on that, Like I'm not an expert here, but
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: let's just say every seat behind P and C. I'm
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: gonna go conservatives two hundred bucks a seat. It's four
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: hundred a game. I'm doing well here, eighty one games season.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: That's thirty two thousand times thirty seasons. That's just short
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: shy of a million dollars worth of tickets. I don't
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: think the Paul Skins card on an auction house is
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: selling for a million dollars. And maybe I'm wrong, but
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: I watched the Netflix series about Golden and I'm now
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: an expert, so I don't think it goes for a
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: million dollars.
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: And the beauty of those tickets is you you can
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: sell them, you can do over things like that, but
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: you can enjoy and you can have, like you know,
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: for somebody like us were in Illinois, We're ten twelve
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: hours from from Pittsburgh, but you have free tickets to
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: go watch your favorite team play the Pirates if.
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: They make it to the series or something like that,
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: You've got tickets. Like I think, it's just such a
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: unique thing that for thirty years you could enjoy this
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: unique experience with baseball. And so I'm taking I'm taking
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: the Pirates offer all day, and I'm selling some of
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: the tickets and making a few bucks, and then I'm
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: I'm road tripping out to Pittsburgh a few weeks at
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: a time, and I'm just enjoying that I'm making I'm
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: negotiating it, by the way, and I'm making sure I
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: could meet Paul Skins every time. And Livy Dunn's gonna
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: have me in her suite once a season like it.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: It's things like that. Yet yeah, yeah, I mean clearly
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: we already are, but so I don't want you. Clearly
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: I've played this one through in my head. Are you
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: taking the deal if you pull the skins card?
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: I don't know if I am. I think I am
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: taking it to an auction house, just because it's like
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: a it's a little bit of like this is kind
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: of thing the classic if you win the lottery, if
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: you win you know, the big bucks or megabucks. I
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: don't even know what it's called. Like, I don't not
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: much like a lottery gambler person, but whether or not
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: you take that annuity or whether you take the lump sum,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: and I'm more of like a lump sum person whenever
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: it comes to that sort of situation, just because like
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: I'd rather have that guaranteed amount and be able to
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: know what I'm doing with it as opposed to the
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: thirty years of tickets as cool, but i'd be pretty
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: burnt out maybe after a couple of years, and especially
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: you know, if you were a Pirates fan, it might
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: be something all different. But I'm also like looking at
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: the extraneous costs as somebody who just had like a
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: twenty game package to the White Sox of like buying food,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: buying parking, buying beer, Like it's it turns into like
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: a whole like cost sink. And so I would rather
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: just kind of, I think, move it to the auction
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: house or just sell it outright to Paul Schemes, like,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: because it does seem like Paul Skis is a pretty
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: big card collector and that's why he wants the card, Like,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: that's why there's the bounty, and so if he's just
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: gonna pay me straight cash, I'll take that.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: I think. I think you actually make a really interesting point.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: There's kind of what I said about negotiating with the pirates,
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Like I think maybe the best way to handle this
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: is that negotiation. Say hey, I'd love to take you
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: up on that. The value of this over thirty years
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: is basically a million bucks. Give me five hundred k
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: given the next five years, and I'll experience all those things.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: I'll have the tickets for five years. It'll be great,
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: you know, cool thing or ten years whatever it is.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: And then you kind of get a little both and
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: you know, you get the value without having to deal
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: with the auction and all that, but then you also
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: get this amazing life experience that nobody else can take
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: away from you. There's probably some happy medium there. But
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: because the Pirates Committee, the I home plate seats is
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: a pretty big that's a that's a pretty big revenue
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: stream right there. What season ticket holder lost those in this,
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: I don't know if there was one as part of it,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: but yeah, obviously you're in negotiation. You're going to attack
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: on your your annual game with Livy as well, so
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: I know that they got that coming from you annual series.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Sorry series, Wow, that might be really pushings we at
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: dinner every time.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: It's it's it's a whole it's a whole deal.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: Uh Okay, Well, like I said, we've got a big
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: list of releases coming up on the calendar, So we're
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: about to talk about Bowman Draft after we take a break,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: which is coming out on December fourth, So right when
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: this podcast release, you'll be able to I mean, I
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: don't know if you can actually a ford to opening
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: Booman Draft if you're listening to this podcast, but it's
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: out there for you to rip while you listen to
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: this podcast. The other releases we've got coming up because
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: of the Hollisday season. We've just got Tons coming out
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: twelve six. We've got Allen and Ginter X twelve eleven.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: We've got TOPS Definitive twelve thirteen, Panini Prism finally coming
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: out six months late, twelve nineteen. TOPS Triple Threads is
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: coming out twelve twenty seven, Bowman's Best. Those these are
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: all twenty twenty four sets. By the way, then it
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: does look like being pushed into twenty twenty five. We
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: have TBD of TOPS Chrome Sapphire and TOPS Luminaries, So
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: that is a pretty big slate of you know, you
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: got the gamut of Panini cards coming up. You've got
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: the high end stuff with Triple Threads and Luminaries, a
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: little bit more of the lower end stuff with Bowman's Best.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Anything here really jumping off the page to you, brew
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: in that in that calendar of scheduled releases.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I like how you try to sneak lower end
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: into this conversation, because there's not much even Bowman's Best
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: these days. It's like a All or a Hobby Books product.
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: But I think what jumps to me is probably Triple Threads.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: I think I've always been a big fan of Triple Threads.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: Just such a unique product that you know, you look
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: at things like Definitive or Best and even luminaries, like
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: you can kind of look through all the rest of
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: the TOPS products and there's you can be like, well,
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: it's kind of like this Triple Threads. There's nothing else
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: like Triple Threads. Especially the patch cards where they spell
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: something they talk about it. I think that's a fantastic product,
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: and it is of the things we're talking about slightly
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: more accessible here. But you know, if you have to
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: go for what's really the the criminal or crim of
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: these that if I would just had to pick one,
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: ignore price, I'd want to ripped, it's probably a TOPS
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: chrome sapphire. There's something about opening a box of sapphire.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: Those cards are just so unbelievable that you know, they
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: sparkle like a sapphire. That's probably why they called it that,
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: and I would just love I think I've opened a
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: box of sapphire like once in my life. Probably not
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: gonna hapen to getick in this year, but it is
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: definitely a product that is fun to enjoy, and you know,
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: especially on the secondary market.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely so, and you'll still have lots of
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: La de La Cruz and Paul Skeien's and the Jackson's
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: and everybody in these products. So they're gonna be pretty
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: big releases. It's gonna be really big for just kind
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: of like the breaking community out there too. So I
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: think it'll be fun kind of watching some of these
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: get pulled because especially between definitive triple threads luminaries, there's
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: gonna be some pretty crazy cards buried in those. So
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: I'm excited to see those surface as we get into
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: the darkest months of the year here during the winter. So,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: like I said, we're gonna take a quick break, but
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: we will be back to discuss the release of twenty
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: twenty four Bowmen Draft. So stick around, all right, Welcome
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: back everybody as we dive into the release of twenty
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: twenty four Bowman Draft, which will be hitting a hobby
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: shelves out there on December fourth. So this is a
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: hobby only product. You're not gonna be able to find
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: this on retail shelves like Targets and Walmart's. The way
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: that the major releases we've talked about are, this is
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: a product that comes out annually. So Bowman Draft, as
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: you might be able to surmise from its name, is
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: loaded with all of the most recent drafted players. So
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: last year this was obviously an extremely hot set with
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Paul Skeens being inserted into it along with Wyatt Langford
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: and some of those other big picks. So this year
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: you're gonna have a lot of those major first round picks.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: They do hold some of them out so that they
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: have first cards. In Bowman twenty twenty five. We'll get
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: into that a little bit, but just a glance an
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: overview of Bowman Draft. What we're looking at here is
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: a two hundred card set of all prospects. So some
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: of these will be Bowman First, which are highly coveted.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: They're essentially rookie cards are the first cards of those players.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: The other ones will just be regular prospect cards because
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: they've had Bowman First and other Bowman sets between Base Bowman,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Bowman Chrome previous Bowman drafts. And you have two options
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: of being able to purchase Bowman Draft out there. One
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: is going to be a hobby box, which you're gonna get,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: is that right at thirty two cards per pack? Oh?
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Thirty two? That is right, Yeah, So thirty two cards
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: per pack and twelve packs in there, which will give
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: you three autographs and a hobby In a jumbo you've
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: got one hundred and twenty card packs, five packs per box,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: and that will come with five autographs. Now Here comes
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: the downside because you can go back. Actually, we talked
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: about the release of twenty twenty three back in episode
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: twenty two, so it's kind of fun getting to retread
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: some of these releases year over year. But the pricing
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: on Bowman Draft has gotten absolutely insane over the past
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: couple of years. Even in twenty episode twenty two, we
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: were already lamenting that, and you actually had the chance
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: to hit Paul Sken's autos Paul skin First. Don't have
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: that type of shot here with Bowman Draft twenty twenty four.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: But you're gonna be paying like you will be as
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: one of those hobby boxes I was talking about with
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: the shot at three autographs gonna run you a cool
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: five hundred and thirty dollars on tops dot com when
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: it releases tomorrow, and the jumbo box is going to
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: run you seven hundred and fifty bucks for five autos
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: and a jumbo box, which are just when's the last
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: time you think you've seen pricing like this brew It's
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: kind of gotten to a point where I'm not who's
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: buying this stuff that isn't a breaker?
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's I mean that's what it's become. It's become
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: a breaker's product that there really is almost no other
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: way to buy this, like the bank roll you have
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: to have, Like in even in the hobby shops that
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: I go to, they don't have a ton of this
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: stuff on the shelf because of what they have to
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: invest to have it in the shop, Like and so
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: they're buying a single case or things like that because
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: you know, for the same cost you can buy seven
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: cases of Allan and Ginter or something else like that.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: The people are gonna be actually coming in and have
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: accessible to them. So yeah, seven fifty. I mean at
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: this point you're talking, you know, let's let's just throw
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: tax in the mix. You're talking like one hundred and
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: seventy five dollars for a auto, like and I get
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: that some of the autos will be expensive, but when
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: when you're looking at like that after cell market, I
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: mean it's it's outside those top guys, like one hundred
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: and seventy five is like the max, and the vast
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: majority of these guys are going to be under fifty
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: dollars in a few years. Like it's it's there's another
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: question about that. Yeah, and so even the guys that
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: sniff the Major's, let alone the guys that don't. And
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: so I think that's what's it is such a tough draw,
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: is that you know the value out of these cars,
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: like you just aren't getting the return. I mean, they
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: do trim back the checklist, so it's not kind of
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: like your everyday middle reliever kind of like you have
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: with the Tops Chrome from the major league level, but
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: it is becoming very inaccessible, and it is also even
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: from the breaker community. I think it's getting tough because
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: they have to differentiate the team so significantly by the
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: players that are available, and you end up with a
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: team that you can get for probably twenty thirty bucks
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: in a break because there's like nobody to pull. And
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: then you might have a team that costs two to
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: three hundred in a break, maybe even more because you're
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: going after the number one draft pick, right, And so
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: it's it's it's, it's it's a it's a challenging product
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: at this point, and I would like to see them
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: try to tear this back. I just don't know how
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: they can. And I also don't know why it's hit
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: the point that it has, like yeah, from a production standpoint,
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: or like it's not hard to access the autographs and
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: things like that. Like what minor leaguer that just signed
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: a contract isn't excited to sign their baseball cards? Right?
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: So I'm not sure what what the driver is. This
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: is clearly not a cost of goods sold issue. It's
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: not about the gross margin here. So we talked about
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: annuities and gross margins in this podcast today, So I
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: apologize to the viewers. We've we've really got out of
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: our lane.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: But yeah, might be able to get like an accounting
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: finance degree off of us after a couple of pods.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: But it's like a too, I mean yeah, And I
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: think you make a good point in terms of this
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: product too. It's Bowman Draft, So like what you're looking
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: at for autographs are recent draftees. You're not able to
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: get a shot in any of the recent January two signings,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: you know, in terms of like Leo Dallas Debrees came
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: out in Bowman Chrome as well as a bunch of
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: the other big signings, and you know they've traditionally been
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: coming through that Bowman Chrome product or they get picked
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: up the next year in Bowman just regular Bowman paper.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: That's where like Elie de la Cruz came through with
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: his first and things like that. And so I think
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: that hurts it even more, like in terms of like
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: the grand scheme of what you're looking for from Bowman first,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: if you can't get some of the big names that
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: don't come through the draft in this product, it also
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: limits it on top of like everything else that you're
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: looking at in terms of pricing and limited availability and
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: just the entire checklist itself. So it is also like,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: I mean, I know that we get down on like
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: lots of these releases in terms of like the pricing
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: and kind of what's going on with fanatics and tops,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: but this one does feel a lot more scammy than
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: I think some of the other releases that we've gotten
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: into those conversations on have been, because usually, like when
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: they've been increasing the prices, it's coming with like hotter
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: releases and hotter stars. So like especially, I think a
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: lot of the increases we've seen on flagship products throughout
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: twenty twenty four are because you know, Elied de la
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: cruizes and there, Paul Skeens is in there, all three
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: of the Jackson's are in there. Why Langford is in there.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: You've got these really nice, budding young stars that are
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: making it worth to rip those products. And even twenty
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: twenty three Bowman draft, like the prices were up in
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: this stratosphere where they are here for twenty four, but
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: it made sense because you had the Langford cards, you
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: had the Skins cards, And it does feel like Tops
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: is trying to pull it like one over on the
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: collectors out there that might not be quite as knowledgeable
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: from like a baseball perspective, because certainly, when you line
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: up like what the depth of the twenty twenty three
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: draft was and compare it to twenty twenty four, it
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: is apples and oranges. You're not looking at the same
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: kind of high end talent that happened in twenty twenty
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: four with that draft coming through, Like sure, you have
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: the names, like you have the Travis Benzana, you have
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: Jack Caglione, you have Haygen Smith, you have Chase Burns,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: like you have these names, but their outcomes, I think
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: in terms of their long term career and just proxi
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: image of the majors across the board as well, is
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: not quite the same level as what we saw in
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: twenty twenty three. So I think it is going to
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: be It could really be a big year for Bowman
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: and Tops in terms of like a reckoning within the
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: hobby of like finding that price point when if you're
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: ripping this product and you're collecting this product and you
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: can't get any sort of turnaround on it because the
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: names aren't as big, and the long term yield isn't there,
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: Like what does that do for Bowman Draft kind of
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: in the long run for all collectors? And so I
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: think it is a bit of an existential product for
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: Tops overall. And maybe that's just us like looking at
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: it from the outside end, but you got to wonder
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: if they're kind of of thinking the same thing as
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: they're trying to capitalize on the back end of this
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: bubble as much as they can.
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: Yeah, And what's I think interesting is you can go
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: get a box of Bowman Draft from twenty twenty three,
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: get a hobby box. So we're talking about five fifty
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: six hundred bucks. Once you get tax and stuff in there,
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: shipping all that, you can go get a hobby of
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: twenty three for like eight fifty, like with the skiings chase.
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: Don't forget Tom Brady was in that thing. That's right,
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: there's that whole thing like and so that's what's so
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: interesting is like, even with what that would be considered,
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: I think that the one of the hottest ones of
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: recent memory, it only appreciated a few hundred bucks to
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: chase the Paul Skins and things like that because they
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: just can't hold that like value. You can't when you
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: pull Paul Skeene's first Bowman like it barely based for
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: the box like and there's nobody in this checklist that's
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: going to do that that's gonna care. So I think
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: it is this we are hitting a point with this
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: product that is going to make things very very challenging.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: Well, yeah, with all those things in mind, I mean,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: I guess where you're all ready going to see where
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: this conversation is going to go, is that it's gonna
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: make sense to chase singles of the players that you
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: want just based on the price between the actual wax
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: itself or I mean the prices through breakers are going
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: to be just as significant I think this year without
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: necessarily those higher end outcomes. So if you're going to
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: be chasing on the secondary market, what types of names
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: are you looking for in this product? Where you know,
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: I rattled off some of the big guys, but are
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: there any kind of like second like tier or next
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: layer sort of prospects and people from the twenty twenty
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: four draft that are in this product that you're looking
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: at and you're saying, hey, you know what if I
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: find that at a car show in the dollar box,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: I'll tuck it away and just kind of like we
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: talk a lot on this podcast out letting rookie cards
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: and Bowman first cards marinate for a little bit, so
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: like any kind of players that you're going through here,
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: and like you might be actively, like you know, watching
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: a little bit on eBay or like I said, usually
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: where I find these cards is out in the wild
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: at card shows. Find some of the parallels in the
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: first of the paper and the chrome in dollar boxes,
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: and you can one way to easily do that is
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: flip it over and see, oh, this dude was a
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: first rounder, this dude was a second rounder. Just to
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: be able to line up a little bit, but anybody
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: kind of like bouncing, kind of like jumping out and
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: catching your eye from the checklist of saying, hey, you
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: know what, that's somebody where where he got drafted. What
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: the draft type is even like getting into the fantasy
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: realm a little bit too, Like where he's at on prospectless,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: it's a little bit lower than I would expect. I
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: think that this guy could pop into the next level.
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you kind of messed earlier. You got
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: the big names, you got the Bazanas, you got the
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: Higgensmith's keg le Owns, Like those guys are gonna be
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: the voice talking about I think the kind of sneaky
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: area here is gonna be your high school hitters. And
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: I'm thinking it specifically like your Christian Moor's, your Bryce
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: Ray years, like those kind of guys that you know,
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: in another draft would have gotten a lot more, you know,
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: Helium Older. We're talking top ten ish uh draft, just
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: I gotta check here for near was eleventh, uh and
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: more with eighth and those are the names you're not hearing.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: And even when the draft happened, it was like, oh,
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: there's a lot of potential there and so for whatever reason,
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: those guys haven't been there and they are further away.
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: It's gonna take some development. But you're talking, you know,
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: middle end field guys with pop, guys that got a
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: lot of potential, And I think those would be the
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: ones that I would be looking a little bit closer
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: at because everybody's looking at Bazana, everybody's been looking at
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: you know, kurtz Hagen's Caglion, Like that's those guys that
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: coming out of the four year universities that could be
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: up in a year two, especially because it feels like
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: teams have are the rule changes at Major League Baseball
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: give will give our buddy Manfred credit here has pushed
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: teams to bring these guys up sooner when they are ready,
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: and the return windows quicker for those kind of guys.
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: So that's where I'd be looking, uh, Like I said,
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: kind of those those high school guys that have really
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: a good pedigree, and you know that's you know, maybe
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: not the autos. The autos are going to be expensive regardless,
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: but you're especially, Yeah, you're looking at your chromes, you're
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: looking at your chrome variations and things like that. Those
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: are the kind of guys that you're like going through
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: the dollar box and you know, in a year two
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: and you're just gonna be picking up Bryce Nan You're
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: first for fifty cents a dollar and he's he's going
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: to be just working his way through this since a
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: system with the Tigers there and at some point he's
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: gonna be a big name. And we're all talking about
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: And that's the kind of thing that you can get
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: some value for Bowing Bowman Draft.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: I'm just not chasing it on release day. Yeah, Yeah,
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: I totally understand. And fun and funny enough. The guys
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: that I'm kind of like eyeing are the two that
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: were picked right between the two guys that you were
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: talking about in more in Rainier, and I think Connor
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: Griffin and Stever King. Connor Griffin does have a lot
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: more helium than I think Steph King does, just especially
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: given Griffin's background of being a hot high school prospect
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: that came into the draft as a two way player
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: but is destined more so to bat with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: But the more and more that I've been reading about
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: Connor Griffin since the draft happened, I'm really starting to dig,
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: like just what his overall profile is, and I think
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: that he's got some of the most like upper level
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: ceilings of anybody in this draft. It seems like in
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: terms of what the outcomes could be, and especially when
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: you look at players who have been two way players
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: and are transitioning into one role or the other, I
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: think that there's growth there. So I like what Connor
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: Griffin can do. Again, I think he'll be a little
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: hot out the gate price wise, but I think somebody
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: who you know going into next year, as you know,
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: the prospect list gets get updated and he's not at
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: the top of them yet. He could get kind of
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: lost in the shuffle and it's going to take him
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: a little bit longer to get to the majors given
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: that he is a high schooler. And then the other one, Yeah,
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: sever King came out of Wake Forest. I think that
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: he's just there's something about sever King where I've been
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: in this mode a little bit from the fantasy perspective too.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: The more and more I look at it, like, I
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: really like sever King is kind of like this really
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: athletic player who I mean, I don't think he's going
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: to ever reach like a Mookie Bets, like ceiling, but
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: like that sort of mold in terms of he's got
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: a lot of different routes to the major's shortstop, second base,
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: center field, outfield, good decent back to ball skills, and
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: like just a well rounded athleticism that I like in
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: King that I could see him making a quick rise
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: to the majors through that Washington National system and is
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: a little bit more under the radar compared to some
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: of the really upper end players that we've talked about.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: So I think those are two guys where you can
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: probably find the singles a little bit easier. You know,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: again within a month, yeah, after like things kind of
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: kick off and go a little crazy. But if you
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: find them in really kind of value boxes, I'm going
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: to pick them up and tuck them away for their
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: MLB debuts.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: So basically what we've said is if you're in the
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: first ten to fifteen picks in your middle endfielder were interested.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: Wow, Wow, we've really made some groundbreaking analysis.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: Because the only gu guy that we didn't talk about
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: that was in the first fifteen picks that was in
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: the middle dfield. Well, there's two guys. One was not
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: in this product, which is Jaj Weatherholt, and the other
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: is Trevis Bizan, a number one draft pick. So really
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: really strong advice here.
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: Guys, Yes, no problem, you know where to find it
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: cards and categories. So that is a good point too.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: So there are going to be some of the bigger
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: names missing and you hit one of them. JJ Weatherholt's
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: not going to be in this product, Charlie Condon's not
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: going to be in this product, and so it's actually
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: usually the tradition is the second pick overall doesn't get
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: a first Bowman until Bowman Paper the next year. This
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: is what happened with Dylan Cruz, Like he wasn't in
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: twenty twenty three Bowman Draft, but he was in twenty
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: twenty four Bowmen. They mixed it up a little bit
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: this year that they put Chase Burns in this product,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: so he was the number two overall pick to the
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: Reds is in Bowman Draft. Condon and weather Holt should
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: both be in twenty five Bowman Paper when that comes out,
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: because that's just kind of the way that this ebbs
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: and flows, and Bowman obviously wants to get those first
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: cards out for these hot first rounders as quick as
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: they can so their next release will be Bowman Paper
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: in April or or March time.
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that they that is making a
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: pretty strong Bowman Paper product in the spring there with
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: Condon and weather Hold. There's a few other for the
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: names there like it as well that are interesting as
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: far as you know some of the guys like uh, Morolanda, oh,
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: honeycut Chanic, you guys like that. But I think they
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: did a good job. I'm guessing that they skip number
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: two being a picture and they're like, well, we'll take
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: the first hitter and first picture and then we'll make
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: because they tend to want a big hitter to be
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: that number one guy in that spring spring series. That's
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: what I'm guessing. That's where Condon's going. So I'm probably
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: more interested in what's coming in the spring. Yeah, But
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: maybe that's my little little bias.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: From my fans, little weather weather, little weather old bias.
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: I mean, I think, honestly, I think hayesus Made is
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: probably going to come through in Bowman Paper as well too,
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: who's been a hot infield prospect for the Milwaukee Brewers. Uh.
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: They usually do something like that with La Cruz coming
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: in twenty twenty two. Yeah, I think that was right,
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: and so like, I think you're gonna see a pretty
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: nice Bowman paper product with Condon Weatherhold and then some
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: of you know, the hot DSL products or prospects. Okay,
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: but with all that, let's get into some of the
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: more details of Bowman Draft in terms of what we're
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: looking at in designs and inserts in variations. So I
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: will say that this is also with the price point too,
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: like maybe there's gonna be like more gimmicky things that
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: kind of come out in the news over the next
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: couple days or release, but surprisingly there's not too much
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: going on. Like you know, they've been burying historic Bowman
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: first in recent releases, between like the Cofaxes and the
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: Pete Roses and Clementes, I don't think there's any of
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: those here in Bowman Draft, as well as like no
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: other kind of strange chases like you alluded to with
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: the Tom Brady last year. So that also kind of
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: makes the entire product a little harder to chew because
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: the only thing that I can really find that's like
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: a randomly inserted chase here in Bowman Draft is actually
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: maybe my favorite thing of this entire set is and
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: this is something that you'll definitely have to check out
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: the website to be able to see the pictures of.
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: But they're putting in specially inserted packs where traditionally these
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: have been pearl packs in Bowman products where they have
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: pearl variation cards and other really like high end variations,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: but they've changed them to variety packs where the parallels
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: are sunflower seeds, peanuts, popcorn, bubblegum. And I love them.
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: They look so goofy, but in like a very heartening, warm,
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: fuzzy baseball way, just given that they're all baseball foods.
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: And what do you think about these am I? Are
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: they too gimmicky for you? Or they kind of hit
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: that sweet spot of fun and baseball.
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: They're like this this like somehow good gimmick, which is
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: really weird, Like and this is this is Midwest ballplayer
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: me through and through. Like there's nothing more Midwest than
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: those four things popcorn, sunflower seeds, bubble gum and nuts
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: for a ballplayer. And I mean it's it's you look
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: at the cards. They didn't overdo it, like I look
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: at like the Halloween parallels and some of that stuff
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: that the Tops has done recently, it's just like, all right, guys,
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: like I don't need this card with all these bats
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: on it or all these umbrellas and things like that,
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: Like these look like legitimate Bowman draft first cards and
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: there's just the border. You can kind of tell there's
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: something unique about them as far as you know, the
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: the favorite candies of times past type thing. I think
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: the bigger question for me is in a draft of
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: those four variety packs, are you taking popcorn? Are you
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: taking sunflower? Are you taking bubble gum? Or are you
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: taking peanuts? What is your ballpark favorite?
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: What a you?
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: What's your go to here?
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: Let me look at these cards again, because they I mean,
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: I think in terms of the design, the sunflower seeds
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: pop the most because it kind of almost looks like
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: tiger stripes and it just like it doesn't quite interfere
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: with the rest of the card the way that some
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: of the other designs do. And just like sunflower seeds
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: and baseball are are so much more synonymous to me
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: than kind of bubblegum, popcorn peanuts are that like there
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: is I don't know if there's any pictures of these
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: players too, with like you can tell like one of
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: them's got like a big wad of sunflower seeds, like
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: in in their mouth or it is like spinning out
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: some flower seeds, because that would take it to the
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: next level. But I have to go with some flower seeds.
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: What about you?
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, if you look at the cards, I
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: think the some flower seeds do stick out as probably
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: the the best design because you can you can tell
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: what it is, but it doesn't feel overly gimmicky. It
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: almost feels kind of like feeling dreams esque, like there's
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: something about it that that really pops. I do have
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: to say I have a soft spot for the peanuts.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: That that was always a go to in my playing days,
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: that that the sunflower seeds with the peanuts thing for me.
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: I have to admit I was also one of those
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: players that would eat the entire peanut because.
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: You're an all peanut guy.
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: I didn't know I'm an all I'm an all peanut guy,
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: so don't take me to a ball game. I get
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: my money's worth out of those bags. It's also only
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: quite disgusting. So how did you even like chew it?
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: Without? Like? How did you? I just can't get it,
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: Like I I.
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: Just throw in the back of your your your pants
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: pocket in the game, you got you know, five six
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: me you take one in time, you toss them and
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: you chew them up. It's I mean, it's it's less
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: complex than the sunflower seeds, so there's less concentration on
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: the on what you're eating when you're playing the game.
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: So I mean, it's it all just makes a lot
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: of sense. Those sunflower seeds. There's a lot of technique
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: in trying to get that seed out of that thing.
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: You can easily miss a fly ball.
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: I'm just telling you, Wow, Yeah, I didn't know sunflower
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: seeds were so difficult, but yes, now I know you're
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: a whole peanut guy.
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: I'm noting that you've got a lot of nuggets tonight here.
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: This is what we can't take weeks off from our
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: podcast here because we learned way too much late at
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: night exactly.
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: And then let's get into some of the inserts that
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: we have here in Bowman drafts. So I would say
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: this is the other another portion that's just like another
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: knock on the product overall, because I think there are
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: some pretty solid inserts and Bowman usually the inserts have
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: been pretty solid over the past couple of years, and
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: they're bringing back spotlights again. I don't know if they're
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: ever going to get rid of spotlights at this point.
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: They're very popular. Yeah, and if you're not familiar with
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: what these cards are, they are literally what they sound like.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: Where it's just a car, it's a card of the
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: player on a black, blank background with a spotlight on them.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: So they really pop. They're they're great, they're super collectible.
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: They've been in all Bowman products now for a couple
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: of years going on. The plasma powers look pretty good.
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: They're pretty kind of classic refractory, lots of electricity and
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: movement and squirrels going on. And Draft Night is another
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: classic in terms of Bowman's you know, it's just pictures
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: of the players on the Draft Night getting picked. But
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: on the other end, like we commented actually a little
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: bit on this in terms of Tops Update and Tops
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: Update Chrome having a few lazy designed inserts, and it's
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: carried over here to Bowman Draft. As I'm looking at
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: the inaction inserts, which is a picture of like the player,
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: like it looks like it's in one of those clamshell
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: packs as an action figure. It doesn't work for me.
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: It's just like the sizing of it all is a
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: little weird and like it'd just be more fun to
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: actually have action figures of the players and have a
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: picture of an action figure. The in tune is just
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: like an insert where there's a couple of speakers going
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: on and there's like it just feels overdone, like the
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: speaker and music stuff. You got to really take it
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: to a special level for me at this point, final
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: draft is I swear we've seen like different versions of
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: this sort of like lazy semi hip hop graffiti design
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: from Tops and Bowman Now all year in twenty twenty
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: four that like they just all feel black to me
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: in terms of it does feel like some of these
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: newer inserts just aren't cutting it in terms of the design.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: And I don't know if it's just me becoming an
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: old curmudgeon or if there's like an element of AI
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: like art kind of being interwoven here that we're starting
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: to see, but it does feel like a lot of
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: these inserts are starting to be half baked. What is
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: your opinion on them?
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Like it feels like there's a big divide within
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: even the product of like clean lines, very classic cards
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: like the spotlights and even just the design of of
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: Bowman this this year is is very much a classic
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: design and then they kind of stretch out a few
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: things like can like the stained glass and stuff like
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: it's a little bit of a stretch but like it
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: still can kind of work. And then they just throw
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: these in there that like it feels like they took
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: a different product and combined it. It's like they took
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: the designers from Big leaguecause they didn't do it this year,
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: and then said, well, let's let's let's you try you
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: out on Bowman draft and that's where we ended up
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: with thin in tune. And like they, like I said,
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: in action cards are odd, like I just I don't
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: know what to think about them. They're just like god
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: so and even the final draft ones like it to
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: your point, like is it ai? Like I it feels
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: like that they've really they couldn't land on a theme
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: for the product, and they just took like everybody's like
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: whatever they submitted at the end of the day for
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: they hit the deadlines, like Okay, you get a card
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: design and whatever you subment, we're putting in there, even
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: if it works or not. So that that's disappointing because
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: these are the cards like historically that don't hold value
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: because collectors collectors like things that are rare, that are
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: big names and that have visual appeal, and these just
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: they feel like a gimmick and they're not gonna maintain
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: that value over time because there's nothing special about it,
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: nothing you know, really foundational that harkens back to like
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: the core of baseball. Like even though some lower seats
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: stuff like I could see that being like, yeah, that's
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: that is, you know so much baseball, and they it
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: was almost art right to day, just something there. So
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: I'm out on these. I was actually gonna ask you
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: to pick your least favorite, and I just don't like
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: them all, so.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: Not even gonna go yeah yeah, And I think that's
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: a great point on like they're just not being a
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: great theme that like that is something that I think
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: maybe that's a little bit of what we've been feeling
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: and expressing here, is that like over these past free releases,
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: the inserts just don't feel linked together, that there doesn't
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: seem to be a rhyme or reason behind them, and
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: it would be certainly a lot more intriguing I think
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: if the inserts, you know, had an actual like even
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: if it's just like air water Fire sort of like
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: parallel themes so that you can kind of collect a
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: bunch of them and then like be able to put
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: them together as a collection. Where these don't kind of
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: motivate me to do.
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: That, even like your flagship, like you have like your
- 1:51:01Speaker 2: thirty fifth anniversary cards every year and you're kind of
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: HARKing back to old classics and then the thirty fifth
- 1:51:06Speaker 2: anniversary goes through every year, and so like you can
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: go after your favorite players thirty fifth anniversary rookie cards
- 1:51:14Speaker 2: and things like. There is theming in different ways across
- 1:51:17Speaker 2: those products. And again they're doing it kind of spotlight
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: where they're carrying that over, but it's like all these
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: other things are just like throw it at the wall
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: and see what hits. And even like I I was
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: complimenting the etching glass variation, like that's not THEIRS, that's Prism. Yes,
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: that's been the any Prism. They just stole that design
- 1:51:41Speaker 2: and so like it does feel like they're just kind
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: of tossing things of the wall. So that's unfortunate when
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: we're talking about a product that's going to cost you
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: seven hundred and fifty thousand. No sorry, it's on a
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: hundred fifty dollars. Sorry, it just feels like it's a
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: hundred and fifty dollars for the jumbo.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. Well, we still got a million
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: parallels for you to collect, even if it's you know,
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: only seven hundred and fifty dollars a box ten one
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: hundred and seven to fifty thousand, and I just counted up.
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: So we've got eight paper parallels, and that's not including
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: inch of the individual printing plates. We've got twenty three
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: chrome parallels of each of the two hundred cards in
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: the base checklist. Again, those twenty three chrome parallels do
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: not include each of the individual printing plates. I'm gonna
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: take it, take it hard on you. I was maybe
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: gonna take it easy and give you just the paper ones.
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: But if you want to take a sip sip of water,
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna shoot over to you the readoff of the
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: the chrome parallels, all twenty three that includes the printing plates.
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: Floor is yours.
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: All right, Let's let's run chrome variations of Bowman Draft.
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: We have your refractors. That's the only thing that we're
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: gonna is gonna be common here with out of the products.
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: We got your sky blue refractors, you got your lunar
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: glow refractors, Purple refractor, sparkles refractor, future lunar refractor, blue refractor,
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: your aqua wave refractor, your aqua lunar crater, your green refractor,
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: your green grass refractors, so the green grass is coming back.
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: Your steel metal refractor, which I feel like that might
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: be a newer one, unless I'm not remembering correctly, yellow refractor,
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: yellow lunar crater, gold refractors. Of fifty orange refractors out
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: of twenty five, you're blacks out of ten. Your rose
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: gold which are fantastic refractors out of ten, your rose
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: gold lavas, your red lavas, your red refractors, and then
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: you got your printing plates and your superfractors. So definitely
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: a strong list, and most of those do actually look
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: phenomenal because I do feel like they did a good
- 1:53:47Speaker 2: job of sticking to your true refractors, your wave refractors,
- 1:53:51Speaker 2: and then your lunar like lunar craters, your things like
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: that that have actually popped into other products and been popular.
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: At least they carried that through. So that was a lot,
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: a lot of a lot of variations on the chrome.
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: Good luck with that rainbow.
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you're getting to be a professional. To you. You
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: rattled through that list super fast to that that was
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: that's tough. I'm going to take the paper one all eight.
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: Let's see, let's see if I can trip up over this.
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: But we've got the standard sky blue in four ninety
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: nine for Bowman. Here the blue refractor, not sky blue,
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: just regular blue, green of ninety nine, gold of fifty,
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: orange of twenty five, red of five, black, one of
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: one's and then your four printing plates. So that is
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: your eight paper parallels, and I guess I should have
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: explained to distinguish it. The paper parallels, it's your kind
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: of standard baseball card stock, and the chrome parallels is
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: which you're looking at. You know, all of your standard chromes,
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: your tops, chrome, your Bowman chromes. Those color variations will
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: be more significant on the chrome side, obviously more valuable.
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: On the paper side a little bit less valuable, a
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: little bit tougher grade too, because I don't know if
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: I've ever gotten a Bowman paper color parallel that doesn't
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: have a nicked corner on it that's like a white corner,
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: because they're just kind of tough to maintain with all
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: the cutting, so that in total gives you, again if
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: we're not counting each individual printing plate, thirty one total parallels.
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: If you're going for any of these rainbows, I wish
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: you luck out there, because this is gonna be a
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: tough product to do that. And on top of it,
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: that didn't include any of the sunflower seed or other
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: kind of crazy parallels. Plus I have a feeling there's
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: there's some other things probably buried in this product that
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: we'll probably have to revisit this in a couple of
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: weeks because we are discussing it pre release state, when
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: usually we're discussing it on release date and kind of
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: have all of the info and facts in front of us.
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: It's gonna be a fun It's a fun product. Like
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: I said, I know we lament about the price and accessibility,
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: but it is it is. It is a pillar of
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: tops Bowman. It is a very important product of this release.
- 1:56:11Speaker 2: So it'll be fun to see kind of how this
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: one holds up over time. Draft will be fun. It's
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: it's a good release, It's got some good products, got
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: some good players in it. Probably gonna stairway steer clear
- 1:56:24Speaker 2: for a while. I think we both suggested to do
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: the same, maybe playing breaks if you have to, But
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: I'd still wait even a few weeks before doing that.
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: And then these are the things to go after card shows.
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: I'd say if it was me, you're aiming like three
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: months out, like that March card show, before the season
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: gets going. That's when that's when to buy this kind
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: of stuff. It's gonna be plentiful. It's gonna all be
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: repped at that point, and you'll be able to get
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: some pretty cool, cool cards before the season kicks off.
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And I mean this is also something to
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: keep in mind. Maybe if you are gonna start like
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: a PC of one of these players, because you know
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: they are recent draftee. You know, I can think about
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: when I started this with wone che Bo or wone
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: bo Chow. Sorry that from the Cardinals. I rawed that
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: off too quick. He's my PC. I should probably know
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: his his his actual name. But that is kind of
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: like a calculus to navigate over the next couple of weeks. Yes, yes,
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: as brew Co shows me a Chow card right now,
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: but if you are starting one of the new PCs,
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: certainly start kind of like hunting some of these cards
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: down and watching them on eBay, or or just kind
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: of like saving them and making sure kind of you
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: know where buyers have them, because they will disappear and
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: get tucked away pretty quick, especially if you have something
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: that is one of those shorter printed parallels that if
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: it is a strategy that you're going for, certainly you
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: know those are the types of cards where you have
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: to be very deliberate with them, and maybe you want
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: to bring those home. But otherwise, like we've been saying,
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: probably wait a couple months, then admire these cards when
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: they're at shows to see some of these players and
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: their new photoshop threads on these Bowman cards as they've
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: recently been drafted. So I think with that we're going
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: to put a bow on Bowman Draft twenty twenty four.
