- 0:00Music.
- 0:08According to an old legend, Nostradamus was buried here. Nostradamus?
- 0:12Sounds like a rock group to me. Yeah, top of the pubs in 1500.
- 0:16They had rock groups then? He did.
- 0:19So tell me Computer Frame. Well, he was kind of a fortune teller.
- 0:22A prophet from the 16th century.
- 0:25He predicted a whole mess of things that have come true.
- 0:29Hey everybody, welcome back to Citizen Frame. And Halloween month and a half.
- 0:34We gave you that street treat, Amityville Horror. And now we're back again I'm
- 0:38just trying not to laugh here.
- 0:41With 1985's Demons I haven't seen this movie In fucking ages I just remember
- 0:47having a killer soundtrack I mean a killer soundtrack I'm talking Billy Idol, White Idol Accept,
- 0:53Fast as a Shark Motley Crue, Save Our Souls Rick Springfield,
- 0:57Walking on the Edge Go West,
- 0:59We Close Our Eyes The Adventure, Set in Art Saxon, Everybody
- 1:02And the list keeps going yep and it's
- 1:06very it's very much you know i mean obviously the
- 1:08director and writer is obviously a
- 1:11fan of this sort of rock music and it was obviously done
- 1:14to appeal to the sort of rock goth audience horror
- 1:18loving audience and that's totally fine by
- 1:21me because even in the cinema there's like acdc posters and
- 1:24stuff yeah i mean it's definitely it
- 1:28it's definitely made for the the 80s oh yeah at that
- 1:31audience the one thing the one thing about the 80s films
- 1:34they're 80s films were happy
- 1:37to be in the 80s so anything that was hot
- 1:40in the 80s was always embedded in that movie well this is it it's like you know
- 1:44i mean self-promotion of the 80s yeah but i mean but it's not only that i mean
- 1:49each decade of the 20th century had its own iconic look and style and different
- 1:55looks and styles and sort of vibe and aesthetic.
- 1:58See, since the year 2000, it's been just like 24 years of meh and sort of overly produced blandness.
- 2:07I mean, not all, obviously, but I'm talking about in popular culture in general
- 2:11with music, film, TV, you know, and it's just a bit, you know, worse, you know.
- 2:17Well, I mean, when the millennium hit, everything got kind of boring. Yeah, blonde.
- 2:25And 90s, you had grunge. You had drama cinema.
- 2:30You had the rebirth. Yeah, you had Tarantino. You had smart.
- 2:36Everything was different, but you know when it came out. You know what era it
- 2:40came out. You know why it came out at that particular time.
- 2:4480s, we all know. We did watch an 80s film.
- 2:4770s, we've talked about it night and day. Why you knew the 70s and so forth
- 2:51and so forth. the new from the 2000s on.
- 2:56Yeah and i now don't get me wrong guys there's great
- 2:59stuff out there but considering how much stuff's getting made but
- 3:03in the mainstream especially with music and film there is so much safe bland
- 3:09crap out there and with the music scene i blame people like simon cowell louis
- 3:16waltz and all those clowns who destroyed it with all those horrible reality
- 3:19programs were real, authentic talent.
- 3:22Didn't get a look in. Reality TV destroyed anything.
- 3:26No, in general. We talk, you know, Married at First Sight and all these dating
- 3:31shows and Survivor and Amazing Race, Big Brother. It's all shit.
- 3:37And DIY is all the big thing. It's what the fuck.
- 3:42It's cheaply made drivel and it's pure quantity over quality.
- 3:47Too many channels too much shit yeah i don't watch mainstream anymore so i can't
- 3:53i just can't deal with it anymore yeah i can't either so i don't bother yeah
- 3:57okay listen we're gonna jump back,
- 3:59rant over the demons 95 well we just that really went off the uh off the tracks
- 4:06there that was all planned yep oh before we start we have to mention,
- 4:11I won't mention the name, but it rhymes with a-hole.
- 4:17I know what's coming here. It's Trevor's wee birthday.
- 4:21Yes, it is indeed. What are you, 95? Well, I feel like it at times,
- 4:26especially doing this podcast, but now I'm 48, you know? Fucking old fuck.
- 4:31It's just, I'm fucking younger than you, but it's just another day to me.
- 4:36So, yeah, I mean, whatever.
- 4:38Yeah. As I was saying to someone today, due to my lifestyle,
- 4:43let's just say in my late teens and 20s, I feel so much better in my 40s than
- 4:49I did in my 20s mentally and physically.
- 4:52And you remember more. Exactly. Bring it on.
- 4:57I'm going to get a wee bit emotional here and a bit profound for the podcast.
- 5:01But you know there's a way saying that it's never regret growing old because
- 5:07it is a privilege denied to many so bring it on i say wow wow let's uh take
- 5:13a step back wow touching that was yeah,
- 5:18not as good as can you turn off those two fucking idiots yeah but that was just
- 5:24a different level of emotion you know that was you know i was just that just
- 5:28hit us right in the feels that one that That great review we got.
- 5:32Would you stop listening to those two fucking idiots? You know?
- 5:36I mean, we couldn't pay for publicity like that.
- 5:42All right. Demons, 1985. Yes. I've seen this like 12 times, but this is it.
- 5:48This is it. Now, it's kind of fun though.
- 5:50We've talked yellow films before with Deep Red and Mario Bava and Dario Argento.
- 5:59Now, I don't think this is really giallo. I think it's more just horror, mainstream horror.
- 6:03I would say if it had any sort of association in terms of Italian horror movies, I would say Fulci.
- 6:11Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:13I read up on this in a little bit. Now, Alberto Bava is known for doing kind of fun Italian ripoffs.
- 6:21Like he did a film called Blast Fighter, which is kind of like Rambo.
- 6:25Then he had Devouring Waters, which was like Jaws.
- 6:28Blade of the Dark was actually pretty good. But his father is a bigwig in the business, Mario Bava.
- 6:37And he's a successful cinematographer and director, very talented man,
- 6:41did both on a lot of his films. He did Bay of Blood.
- 6:45Bay of Blood. He did Hats for the Honeymoon. My favorite, Black Sunday.
- 6:49Yes, Black Sunday is a classic. I brought up Black Sunday.
- 6:53Yep, because the reason I bring up Black Sunday is because the mask featured
- 6:59in this film is the mask, Satan's mask used in Black Sunday.
- 7:03Well, it's kind of like it. And he was paying homage to his father who passed
- 7:07early on by using the mask kind of inspired from Black Sunday.
- 7:12And I thought that was a kind of really full circle, kind of cool.
- 7:14I would even say that even the film within the film, you know,
- 7:18at this movie theater, which, you know, the fine deal sort of curse at home,
- 7:22it's quite gothic, you know, the whole Nostradamus and Raven stuff.
- 7:25Yeah. That even, there's certain sort of Black Sunday vibes about that as well.
- 7:29Yeah, it's definitely a Namaste to his father. And I think that's pretty cool.
- 7:33And it's nice the fact that this is, Lombardo Bava still around,
- 7:36still directing, to you, but nothing like he, this was his big success, this one right here.
- 7:40And a sequel as well, which I haven't seen. I haven't seen it, but I heard, you know.
- 7:45But, you know, and of course we know Dario Ajanto mentored him.
- 7:51He's actually a co-writer on this, co-producer and so forth.
- 7:54And also Roberto Bava also trained under Dario Ajanto, like I just said,
- 7:58but as an assistant director for Tenebron and some other stuff he's done.
- 8:03So he's worked closely with everyone kind of in this field.
- 8:07Um, so he's definitely had some, you know, like, like what, what you just mentioned.
- 8:13Roger Corman has done for American filmmakers. You've got Mario Bava and Dario
- 8:19Gento doing the same thing for up-and-coming Italians.
- 8:23You know what I mean? The sort of more experienced hands bringing in the new
- 8:28blood and mentoring them and keeping them right.
- 8:31That's the way it should be. Not just in film or horror, but I think in life. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:38Exactly. In life. Wow. You're so profound. bound this is poetic this wow who
- 8:46knew demons would be the film that trevor finds himself.
- 8:53I'm going on some sort of philosophical journey here with this and we're only
- 8:56nine minutes into it oh my god well there's always that much to talk about so
- 9:01we might as well keep going.
- 9:03What i love about this film i love and there's not many of them i know i'm missing
- 9:08a bunch i'm I'm just not remembering them. But I love movies that are within the movie.
- 9:12Yes. And this is one of the first films to really do it. There's some fun ones
- 9:16like Matinee is a good one, John Goodman.
- 9:19Popcorn's a really underrated one no one's probably heard of.
- 9:21The End of Shocker kind of does this a little bit. Yeah.
- 9:24Scream 2 actually probably stole from this with the famous death scene of Jada
- 9:28Pinkett Smith when she was getting stabbed in the movie theater during the movie's
- 9:32playing, but no one thought it was real.
- 9:33Well, also possibly even the original Scream where Randy is watching Halloween,
- 9:39while Ghostface is behind him and he's going by, you know, it's all very sort of meta.
- 9:44Yeah. You know, and jokes, that type of thing. Yeah.
- 9:47Okay. Yeah, exactly. So.
- 9:51It's got a lot going for it. It also reminds me of a Clive Barker story from
- 9:58his Books of Blood that's never actually been filmed called Son of Celluloid,
- 10:02a bit of a haunted cinema where it's within Clive Barker's story.
- 10:06It's not just a haunted cinema. The character, due to this living cancer, essentially,
- 10:12that this criminal has, you know, taken refuge in the cinema,
- 10:15has, it basically, it makes the, The cinema's in an old sort of church-type
- 10:22building, and it makes the people from the films actually come alive,
- 10:27but they're possessed by the demonic forces,
- 10:30this demonic force that comes from the living cancer.
- 10:33But I definitely got vibes of that from this, Demons.
- 10:38Okay. Great.
- 10:41I got nothing to add.
- 10:43I never read the book, so I couldn't speak for it. But yeah,
- 10:47the idea is kind of there.
- 10:50And so this one, we got George, Cheryl, Ken, Hannah, Kathy, Carmen,
- 10:54Ingrid, Rosemary, Blind Guy, Frank, and Tony.
- 10:58Here's the weird thing about this film.
- 11:02Yes, George and Cheryl are probably going to be the leads, I guess.
- 11:06But there's really no lead in this. It's kind of like just a bunch of supporting actors having fun.
- 11:12And I kind of like that. Yeah. I was okay with that.
- 11:16It doesn't take itself too serious, and it is more of an ensemble cast where
- 11:21everybody, well, everything's going crazy, and, you know, the demonic-possessed
- 11:27zombie-type creatures, you know, people are getting bitten.
- 11:30There's a lot of Romero in here as well. Oh, God, yeah.
- 11:33I would say Evil Dead, but without the same flair as Sam Raimi,
- 11:37but there's a lot to enjoy here.
- 11:41Well, you can, I mean, you got the Evil Dead, but you can also say Evil Dead
- 11:442 took from this a little bit. Again, they all borrow from each other in some form or another.
- 11:48This is very well respected in the horror community.
- 11:51Yes. That's for sure. I love the opening with the 80s pop version of Goblin.
- 11:57And then I just think it's funny how there's a long opening scene,
- 12:01right? And you think Cheryl's being stalked.
- 12:03Obviously, she's not the man behind the mask giving her the little ticket.
- 12:07And so I got love. Well, technically, he is stalking her because he's setting her up.
- 12:11You know, her and her friend who's playing a teenager. No, he's not because,
- 12:15no, that's where I'm about to get to here.
- 12:18Before you really interrupt me, Mr. Profound. Right.
- 12:23So, she's on the train and then she sees images of the man behind the mask,
- 12:27like a reflection on the train. Why the fuck's that even happening?
- 12:32Oh, it's just to be sort of, I don't know, atmospheric type thing.
- 12:35Yeah, see, that's something Linz would fucking do.
- 12:37And that's what, that's what, oh no, your boy Edgar's. so
- 12:40that's what bothers me I don't mind you want to be
- 12:43Archie Farchie and do something different but don't put something in there
- 12:45for the fucking sake of putting something in there going what the fuck and you
- 12:48have no explanation for it but it is sort of it's man behind a mask and tall
- 12:54sort of creepy but sexy ginger girl who it's very much suggested they're behind
- 12:59us knowing that the film is cursed and they're getting people to get them possessed,
- 13:04she has nothing to do with this Cheryl no I'm not talking about Cheryl No,
- 13:08but they're looking victims.
- 13:09I'm talking man behind the mask. Oh, you're talking Ingrid. Yeah.
- 13:14You're talking about the usher, the girl. Yes, yes, yes. The usher.
- 13:16Yeah, her and man behind the mask. But what does that have to do with what I'm talking about?
- 13:21Oh, no, I'm just saying. I sort of, I got from what you were saying.
- 13:24That has nothing to do with what I, you know, you should have piggybacked on
- 13:27what I said. Not going off to a fucking whole new topic.
- 13:30What I'm saying is they're peppering. You know why you don't want to argue with
- 13:34me on this one? Because you know I'm right.
- 13:36You fucking got a hard on for Eggers. because you've got a fucking hard-on for Lynch.
- 13:39They pepper in the shit, and you're like, oh, my God, it's masterpiece material.
- 13:44Well, this is stupid. See that scene? This is stupid. This was amateurish, him doing this.
- 13:49No, I totally got it. I totally got what he was doing. Okay, okay.
- 13:54So, all right, maybe it was a bit, but you know what? So what?
- 13:57He's just, you know, he's playing around. But in my head, it is sort of, it's basically,
- 14:04it's sort of setting up sort of
- 14:07man behind the mask as the big bad
- 14:10which he sort of turns out to be yeah yeah we'll
- 14:14discuss some later on because he doesn't he doesn't target her he just gives
- 14:18her their thing and then she goes back to him asking for another one for her
- 14:21friend Kathy who looks about 40 yeah well they're college students yeah right
- 14:27mature students yeah well Cheryl certainly looks the part,
- 14:32She's cute. Yeah. I liked her. I like when you go to this theater, the Metropole.
- 14:40Yeah, it's very European. Very European. It's kind of cool. And you walk in
- 14:43there and there's these two beautiful prints, and I want them,
- 14:46of Terminator and Creepshow.
- 14:49There's also some brilliant posters in the cinema, if you look closely,
- 14:52Nosferatu. Oh, but those are more like hanging.
- 14:55There's actually two framed beautiful prints. When they walk in,
- 14:58you see the bike featured in the movie and the mask, right? on the bike there.
- 15:04On the left and right side, there's two beautiful Prince of Creepshow and Terminator.
- 15:08And there's a pretty cool bike there too, which comes into play later on.
- 15:12We're talking about Samurai Bike Guy.
- 15:15Yeah, Rambo Bike Samurai Guy. Yeah.
- 15:19I do like the way it works when it quickly introduces the characters.
- 15:24You've got Ken and George.
- 15:26You've got Tony, who's the badass. I think he's a pimp.
- 15:29They're hookers. Yeah, with Rosemary. I think one or two more called Rosemary.
- 15:35And they wanted the first one to get it. And you got the blind guy.
- 15:39You got Frank, who's kind of a dick.
- 15:41You got all these different characters. And they all have, they literally have
- 15:44over-the-top personalities to let you know who to differentiate who each one really is.
- 15:52And I do enjoy that they did that.
- 15:54And they do it when the movie's playing, because they're talking to it.
- 15:57One guy goes, shut up. And you know who's the aggressive one.
- 16:00Yeah, apparently the inclusion of the blind guy was a joke because the joke
- 16:05is basically, why would a blind person go to a... But he's taking his daughter.
- 16:10Yeah, who's also having a bit of, as you would say, yum-yum time with some other random older guy.
- 16:15But here, let us not forget the badass punks who...
- 16:20Well, yeah, we haven't been introduced to them yet. But the guys who start Coke, literally Coca-Cola.
- 16:26Yeah, and then they spill it all over the car. And then Mr. Bottas is like,
- 16:31you fucking pick all of that up.
- 16:35So the movie, you know, it's funny. I looked it up. There's no title for the
- 16:38movie. They never tell you. Right.
- 16:42Are you sure? I looked it up. Positive. Couldn't find it. Hey,
- 16:45if anyone listens to this podcast, if you can send us a shout on Facebook or
- 16:48Instagram, let us know what the title of the film is.
- 16:51I looked it up. I couldn't find it. Yeah, the film. All I thought, all they tell you.
- 16:56That it is, they did take from the evil dead.
- 17:00And it's about two couples sneak their way to an ancient burial ground that
- 17:04is the ledge to hold the bones of Nostradamus and their encounter,
- 17:08their own demon infestation.
- 17:10And once that happens, it happens in the theater. And it also brings to mind H.P.
- 17:15Lovecraft and M.R. James. Their stories were very much, you know,
- 17:19antiquarian sort of, you know, buildings, you know, or characters,
- 17:24you know, going to these remote buildings and finding graves or cursed sort of books.
- 17:29So, yeah, there's, I mean, Bava here, our son of Bava, certainly knows his stuff.
- 17:35Yeah, I mean, despite some of the execution being a little,
- 17:39I don't mind that because the guy is at least, you know, he did his homework
- 17:43and studying his father's work, Dario Gento's, Sam Ramey's, maybe a little Lovecraft
- 17:49in there, maybe even Barker.
- 17:51So the guy's well-versed and well-read in this field, in this genre.
- 17:56So you can appreciate that.
- 17:59And I also will appreciate the gore is quite effective.
- 18:02It's quite creepy. creepy it's kind of creepy but their
- 18:06eyes when the yeah it almost looks like he's when he
- 18:08when he's ripping skin it almost looks like
- 18:11his paper almost but it's done to the point where it's crude and
- 18:15it kind of works yeah and also and it's fun but also i would say whenever they
- 18:19change especially the first few changes of you know the hookers and stuff whenever
- 18:24their eyes go yellow and you know they're talking demonically and stuff that's
- 18:28pretty creepy yeah i mean we'll talk about my favorite my favorite shot is promised
- 18:32it's the poster when they think they're
- 18:35okay and then you see all these um zombies coming
- 18:38up from the concession stand and it's
- 18:42all blue behind them and then you just see their eyes and their shadows shining
- 18:46yeah quite quite fucking creepy i think it's on their paw i think it's the poster
- 18:49shot and it's very zombie plague romero type but putting his own sort of touch
- 18:54to it yeah putting his own spin on it and that's okay and because it certainly
- 18:58does work the guy he's got talent But there's some issues.
- 19:02There's some issues but i but the funny thing is there's not much to talk because once rosemary,
- 19:08gets pops her zit and things just go apeshit yeah
- 19:12and then she she claws her other friend in the neck that's where everything
- 19:15starts just going out actually her what's a really good scene as well it's when
- 19:20her friend is you know obviously she's being you know sort of scrapped along
- 19:24the neck by by her but whenever she's before she turns and she she goes behind the cinema screen
- 19:30and that's where she turns and it's actually really well done.
- 19:34Yeah. That's what I was talking about with Scream 2. Did that a little bit with
- 19:36Jada Pickett-Smith? Yes.
- 19:37And, and her screams are covered by the sound of the screams that are going on in the film.
- 19:42Yeah. And so they kind of play on that. And the one girl's quite smart.
- 19:46I think it was Kathy who caught it going, something's going on here, guys. This is legit.
- 19:50And, and that's where everything goes apeshit because she turns and now I, I do,
- 19:55I do love when the blind guy gets his
- 19:58eyes ripped out of The poor bastard Yeah I know But that
- 20:02probably Wouldn't have hurt him anyway So you know Yeah Well no It probably
- 20:05would have Yeah well His eyes are still there probably I'm not I'm not really
- 20:09an expert On sort of the Oh you're not an expert When your eyes get ripped out
- 20:13No Not yet anyway You'd be numb When they're ripped out By demons You know Oh well.
- 20:20Yeah, like, there's some fun stuff here, like when the two are making out,
- 20:25the daughter of the blind guy and some doofus, and she's strangling with the
- 20:28rope as they're making out.
- 20:29I would say that all of the young, with the exception of Cheryl,
- 20:33every single one of the young characters in this film are complete and utter dipshits. You know?
- 20:41They're idiots. No, I think George is all right. George is all right,
- 20:45but he's like Poundland Rambo, you know, with a samurai sword on a motorbike later on.
- 20:51Yeah it's me it's a dick i like some of the effect ken that was ken yeah i like
- 20:56some of the effects where the tongue comes out and then you see her there's
- 21:02a nice shot it's kind of gross,
- 21:04her all her teeth are falling out as they're being replaced by fangs yeah really
- 21:09good really well yeah and there's also one later on where it's basically cheryl's
- 21:15friend what do you call her as a Cathy, isn't it? Cathy.
- 21:17Cathy, where it's like a demon literally climbs out of her body, you know?
- 21:23It's really well, it's really effective. Yeah, it's got some cool shit in there.
- 21:29And, and so when they, when all the shit kicks down, kicks off,
- 21:33they all run to the, you know, the exit, obviously.
- 21:36And they start ripping down the doors and the doors are coming up.
- 21:39Are they blocked? Are they cemented in? Is that what happened?
- 21:41Well, I got the impression that the demonic force that it caused them to become
- 21:46demons had basically locked the doors because it's sort of suggested later on
- 21:51when dipshit punks arrive and the door opens for them that that's caused by the demonic force.
- 21:59No it's not the blind guy got out remember yes I know him as well but yeah well
- 22:05suppose yeah it could be explained by that actually and that's why all the chaos
- 22:09happens outside because the blind guy gets out and attacks the cops.
- 22:12Yes that's right but I very much got the
- 22:15impression that it was a demonic force that was
- 22:18keeping them in the cinema plus the fact their
- 22:21their own dipshit force which was making them
- 22:24stupid yeah i just i just didn't get that because they knocked down the doors
- 22:29and then there's another wall there so i don't know if that was just yeah maybe
- 22:33some i don't know i don't okay i do like that there is quite a lot of this left
- 22:38their own imagination like what were the reasons what were the motives behind sort of
- 22:43a guy in a mask and Usher creepy girl
- 22:46and stuff but I like how that's left sort of unanswered
- 22:50well I don't like that myself because they
- 22:52do have Demons 2 and I looked at the cast and Demons 2 has none of these guys
- 22:56in it so it's a different story I think yeah I heard it's a different story
- 23:00so I'm not going to bother to revisit but yeah during this chaos there's some
- 23:04nice stuff like that woman getting scalped is pretty good but I like the fact
- 23:08that you had Tony, Ken, George,
- 23:12George and I can't remember the other guy.
- 23:16They're trying to keep Rosemary from coming in and she's going fucking apeshit
- 23:19through his door. Yeah. And they all, they all help each other.
- 23:21Yes. They bond together. And I like the fact the all, I mean,
- 23:24yeah, a lot of it doesn't work out for them because they're idiots,
- 23:26but I do like the fact that the, there's no bickering, blah, blah, blah.
- 23:31You know how you always have the infighting going on or something.
- 23:33There's always something.
- 23:34Although that can add to the drama, but I, I, you know, I, yeah,
- 23:38I see what you're, I get what you're saying.
- 23:40You don't have time for drama on this. Well, I think it could.
- 23:43You can't take a, you can't take a piss. Well, I think it could have done with
- 23:46taking its breath a bit for a bit of, because it does from,
- 23:50certainly in the final act, it does go a bit too chaotic and a bit too crazy
- 23:55in that you're like, what the fuck's going on here? You know, what's happening here?
- 23:59And I think it could have done with a time sort of stepping back a bit just
- 24:04for the audience to catch their breath and having a bit of drama between the characters.
- 24:07Maybe a bit of dialogue of them arguing, you know, over who was going to be
- 24:11the leader or what to do or whatever.
- 24:12However, I did like, however, with the pimp guy who is a bit,
- 24:16yeah, he's a bit of a, he's a badass at first, but then he like helps him,
- 24:20but then he of course gets, gets bitten and he becomes one of the demons.
- 24:24Yeah. He's kind of like everything.
- 24:26He's like the Chris Rock of the team because he always yells everything. Yeah.
- 24:30Yeah. And then, but he's goes, he's goes out like a badass. He takes two of
- 24:33them over the edge. Yes. Of the balcony and then they have to cut the rope.
- 24:37Yeah. Uh-huh. But I think he would have been a better maybe leader of the gang
- 24:41than George. But George did his best.
- 24:46And he did quite well. Well, he survived, so he did all right.
- 24:49Yeah. But as his chaos has gone, they go up to the projector booth,
- 24:54and they find out the projector booth is manual. Not manual, automatic.
- 24:57Yes. And there's nobody running it. So they try to destroy the film is what they do.
- 25:02But that's why I wish we had some kind of reasoning here.
- 25:05Like they found like the necrocomma book or something something
- 25:08that give us something what the fuck's going on here we needed
- 25:11that moment and maybe that's the downtime we needed a downtime for
- 25:15them to assess the situation yes whenever we are catching
- 25:17our breath a bit where we're gonna be felt too much but filled in
- 25:20a little with the reasoning behind us because basically from
- 25:24about the halfway mark it's just
- 25:27wall-to-wall craziness which is okay in and of
- 25:30of itself but sometimes i think it's good and better
- 25:33to like you know step it back a bit you know
- 25:35just for people actually know what's going on yeah there's a movie that's like
- 25:40this that's non-stop chaos and it's intense and fun but they knew when to give
- 25:45us a moment to reflect and that's traded but again they do that really well
- 25:50and we'll definitely get to that trilogy soon.
- 25:55But yeah, I do like all this chaos. You got Motley Crue playing.
- 25:59You got Saxon playing. Just fucking nuts. And then a custom go west.
- 26:03We close our eyes, and we meet these fucking idiots.
- 26:07Nina, Baby Pig, Ripper, and Hot Dog. And these guys, I think it's funny.
- 26:12I was like, are we watching Mad Max again?
- 26:15But yeah, they're just coke heads. And so we spent, here's the problem.
- 26:19The movie's an hour and 28 minutes. and you kind
- 26:23of said it yourself they needed more downtime
- 26:26and that downtime should have went to the people in the theater and
- 26:29give us more of that these guys should agree completely there's
- 26:32really they do nothing for the plot no point no
- 26:35point they had nothing yeah this film and quite frankly it takes you out i agree
- 26:40it's the film um totally the downtime like you say should have been given to
- 26:44the main characters in the cinema instead of these absolute clones who are the
- 26:50least convincing badasses ever.
- 26:54Oh, God. It would be kind of funny in something like a Mad Max film,
- 26:59but they should have been cut from this.
- 27:03Oh, in a heartbeat. Yeah. In a heartbeat. Yeah.
- 27:07Let me ask you, there's a scene where they find a mystery building or something,
- 27:12they knock down a wall, and they find a separate area.
- 27:17And they walk in, and they suddenly saw the wall. So it's kind of nowhere to
- 27:21go. So they're just trapped in the wall.
- 27:23And the girls start going apeshit. Did I miss something, or are they just screaming
- 27:26because they're panicking?
- 27:27No, they're screaming because they're being pursued by carnivorous demons.
- 27:33That's all there is. Yeah, but everything was calm.
- 27:36They found that, and yeah, they found out there's no way out.
- 27:38But the girls start going apeshit.
- 27:40I was like i was like well there by the
- 27:43way that's nothing way too much screaming i know yes you
- 27:46would have some screaming but in the cinema you kind of want
- 27:48to calm that down a bit after a while well i can sort of understand the screaming
- 27:51you know i mean what do you want stuff no you didn't you can't have
- 27:54you can't have you got to put it in somewhere then because the
- 27:58problem is from around the halfway mark onwards there's too much random stuff
- 28:02going on here in in so many ways and it you don't really get a chance to actually
- 28:08become emotionally involved with the characters or also add the story it's just
- 28:13a bit too chaotic still fun but but chaotic,
- 28:18So when George gets on the motorcycle and becomes Samurai George.
- 28:22Yep, Rambo Samurai George, yep.
- 28:25I got to ask this. Where the fuck do helicopters come from?
- 28:30Beat me to it. Random helicopter falls through the roof.
- 28:33I can only presume it's a police helicopter that was sitting on the roof,
- 28:37but it is never referenced before or even after.
- 28:42Just a random helicopter falls through the roof.
- 28:45You know they might get away with it because when you go
- 28:47outside all the chaos has gotten bigger because the blind
- 28:51guy got out attacked the cops and now it's snow well that's what
- 28:53they want to do they want to basically take over the world and yeah
- 28:57so that's what's happened i'm assuming you're right
- 29:00it's a place or reporting cop or whatever i thought
- 29:03was like a reporter's you know like a hell but it
- 29:06doesn't even say like news 11 or something on there so i
- 29:09i wasn't i was oh no no no it's and while
- 29:13we did have a couple of good deaths with the propellers they do you like the
- 29:17deaths rip the guy's face off they did miss a trick presumably during the budget
- 29:21of having george and cheryl fly back fly back up on it but i'm presuming that's
- 29:27down to budget or the fact that they're two dipshits who can't fly a helicopter,
- 29:33no you can't say george dipshit because he's the samurai george of the motorcycle
- 29:38and then he He builds a fucking harpoon gun.
- 29:41He's Rambo. Out of spare parts to get them to the roof. So the guy's pretty smart.
- 29:45He's West German Rambo. Fuck.
- 29:49So I love how I just, I'm still shocked at the helicopters. Where the fuck did
- 29:53this come from? But you know what though?
- 29:56The movie's kind of a chaotic mess. It's almost like a first-time director,
- 30:01and he's somewhat of a first-time director, where he's given a free range,
- 30:06and he's just going with crazy batshit shit, giving me crap.
- 30:10It's not crap. It's actually well done. It happens, but you just don't understand why it's happening.
- 30:16Well, it's almost like maybe even the studio or something who was producing
- 30:20it for him said, oh, by the way, we have a helicopter here that we'll use in
- 30:24another film you can use if you want. and he's like thinking to himself,
- 30:26yeah, helicopter, stick that in. You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 30:31Motorbike, fuck yeah, stick that in. Yeah. Samurai sword, there we go.
- 30:36So, yeah, it does feel like it's just a bit, it's like certainly the helicopter
- 30:40anyway, it's just thrown in.
- 30:42Actually, the motorbike scene actually reminded me of Kevin Dillon in The Blob. Oh, Jesus.
- 30:49We just need that sweet, sweet mullet. Well, yeah. I mean, what a mullet.
- 30:54So when George saves them, gets them up there, obviously Faceman is there and
- 31:01he's going to kill George.
- 31:04Actually, I thought it would have been better if George kills Faceman,
- 31:07but Faceman kills Cheryl.
- 31:09It would have been better because the ending we get with Cheryl is terrible.
- 31:12And I do like Metal Face's death with the nails. Yeah, it's pretty gory.
- 31:19It's pretty gory, 90s nails. Yeah.
- 31:24When they get up to the rooftop, they realize the whole town is affected now.
- 31:28Which I'm fine with because I can understand when blind guy and the cops,
- 31:33it all snowballs. That's fine.
- 31:35But when they get picked up by the Jeep and they're like, we're going to the farmland.
- 31:39Well, hopefully we'll find a new way of life. A pretty new way.
- 31:42And I'm like, wait a minute. Where did you guys come from?
- 31:45Also, and this is most importantly, how do you know this?
- 31:48You probably knew about this five minutes ago.
- 31:51How are you all so well prepared? The kid, the blonde
- 31:54kid in that Jeep is the same kid from Fuji's The House by the Cemetery who is
- 32:00a really weird role in that House by the Cemetery in that the kid well certainly
- 32:05for the English version of it the kid in it is dubbed by an older woman and
- 32:11it just gives this really weird,
- 32:13although I mean it's a pretty surreal and sort of trippy film anyway but it
- 32:17just not only that, the older woman's voice dubbed with this kid
- 32:22you know apparently you know speaking the lines is it
- 32:25comes across as really sort of weird but
- 32:28also it grates on you so but but it's it's surreal but that's the same kid from
- 32:34that film and he was like the sort of go-to creepy italian kid for horror films
- 32:39in the 1970s and 80s you know and trust me he's a creepy wee shit especially
- 32:44in house by the cemetery yeah like that creepy Phoebe Baxter from Children of the Corn.
- 32:48Yeah. Isaac the Molokai. I love them. Isaac.
- 32:53So they're in the Jeep, and a second goes past, and Cheryl's turned.
- 32:58Usually it takes a minute or two. It takes a while for you to turn.
- 33:00It's just for a final scar, a final jump.
- 33:03And so Cheryl dies, and George is like, oh, there's a hot blonde in here anyway. Fucker.
- 33:09Yeah. I don't give a shit. It's just for the simple sake of a final jump scar, a final scar.
- 33:15You know, this, I don't know, this movie's just fucking chaotic mess.
- 33:21But entertaining. It really is a mess.
- 33:22But it's entertaining, isn't it? Oh, 100%. It's really enjoyable.
- 33:26And from a nostalgia point of view, it brings me back to an era where horror
- 33:32films like this were over-the-top gory and crazy and stuff, but they were never
- 33:37nasty. They were just fun.
- 33:40Yeah. You know? Yeah, they're definitely that. And that's exactly what happened.
- 33:45Hey, I can see it now, I can see the conversation Hey Pavel,
- 33:48come here, what? We've got a helicopter over here What?
- 33:52Yeah I don't have any helicopter feature in the script, who cares It's through
- 33:57the roof They literally throw it through the roof,
- 34:01You know, they talk about that there It's a douche ex machina ending,
- 34:06an act of God Well, it's quite literally here, but with a helicopter.
- 34:10You know, but You know, I I, stuff like this, you know, I will always have a
- 34:19great smile on my face while watching them, you know what I mean?
- 34:21And there's all the super gory bits and you're like, oh, I know,
- 34:24but it's just, it's ghostly and horror, a lot of fun.
- 34:28Yeah, I mean, it is fun. It's got issues, of course, but it kind of,
- 34:33the issues kind of add to the fun of the film. Yeah, totally.
- 34:36And so God love him and he's probably had a budget and just,
- 34:41yeah, just went fucking crazy he just went for it.
- 34:45We can't explain that. Ah, they'll figure it out.
- 34:47You know? It's not important. It's not important. He's probably right.
- 34:51And I guarantee you, he explained it right. Yeah, the blind guy caused all the
- 34:55others, all the people getting, you know, from outside the theater getting it.
- 34:59And he's probably like, yeah, see, he got it. I don't have to show anything.
- 35:02No, give me the helicopter.
- 35:04Let's put a bunch of badass punks.
- 35:07And I love how the helicopter happens to land right where all the chaos really
- 35:12is. Yeah, just how convenient.
- 35:16Yeah. Apparently the censors, surprisingly, I think, and I'm not too sure about the US,
- 35:21but I think in the UK the censors did not really have that much of an issue
- 35:26with the gore, but more the scenes of the idiot punks taking the coke and spilling it for some reason.
- 35:34I mean, yeah, like when he's doing the razor blade on her nipple.
- 35:37Yeah, that's quite weird. This is a little, this is not necessary.
- 35:41This is, this is, no, no, I'm not prude, but this is a fun film.
- 35:45I mean, I'm enjoying myself. And now you're putting this in there.
- 35:48I can understand. Or it's just more random. And I can understand.
- 35:51I can, no, I can just understand where the censor's going.
- 35:54Why did you put this in here? It doesn't go with it. That's probably what they're saying.
- 35:59I would agree that it's unnecessary, but I wouldn't have censored it because
- 36:02it's not my place to censor.
- 36:04And, you know, I wouldn't have censored it, but it is unnecessary.
- 36:08In my place, I am censor Mary. Mr. fucking Mary Whitehouse.
- 36:12I'm a fuck off. I'm not at all, but it's completely, I think it's unnecessary.
- 36:17It takes you out of the film. I think maybe what you mean.
- 36:21I want that five minutes back of us fucking eating coke heads and put it back
- 36:26into George's and Cheryl's story.
- 36:28Well, I think maybe what you mean is not censored, but edited.
- 36:31So there is obviously, of course, a world of difference. So,
- 36:34yeah, I'm sort of agreeing with you there. You know, but yeah,
- 36:38not censored, but possibly edited.
- 36:41Yeah, I don't care about them showing nipples or anything, but it had no place
- 36:44in the film. I would agree with you there. It was unnecessary.
- 36:47Yeah, I own it. I got it on 4K, and I just watched it.
- 36:52Come on, you put a smile on your face, you enjoy it. You know what it is?
- 36:55It's amateur Romero on steroids. Yeah, with a bit of Sam Raimi, Barker, all the rest.
- 37:00And a little trauma. A little trauma. Yeah, it's dad, you know?
- 37:05They're all thrown into the mixer, and that's fine by me.
- 37:09Yeah, and he made it his own. So good on them. All right, guys,
- 37:12we're going to wrap this up. Next up, Salem's Lot.
- 37:16It's out, people. It's out. I'm going to watch it later.
- 37:21And I'm looking forward to it. I listened to the reviews. There's a couple of
- 37:24magazines I respect. I watch and listen.
- 37:27And it's getting, it's not bad. And that means I'll probably like it because I'm a sucker.
- 37:33But we'll see. It's got a good cast. And I'm looking forward to talking about
- 37:36that one. Do you think it'll be as good as Return to Salem's Lot?
- 37:39Oh, me taking the shit is better than return to Salem's lot.
- 37:46Fucking hell. A scurrier?
- 37:50Wow.
- 37:53All right. We're going to wrap this one up. Guys, give us a shout,
