Latest / Spiders Sound Off / Richmond WBB’s Run Ends in Durham | Selection Sunday, Nebraska & What’s Next
Transcript
- 0:06Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of Spider Sound
- 0:10Off. This is Tom.
- 0:11And this is Porter, still in Durham, NC.
- 0:14Yeah, so I drove back last night and Porter is still down in
- 0:19Durham. We'll get into that game.
- 0:22Obviously, this is the kind of our episode of the season is now
- 0:25over. It was over for the men's team a
- 0:29week ago. It's over now for the women's
- 0:32team after the, the, the loss in Durham.
- 0:35So we'll talk about all of that. We may go back a little bit.
- 0:38So the last time we did our podcast, it was the Kennywood
- 0:42episode and we it was also kind of Selection Sunday.
- 0:46So we didn't really get to talk a lot about it.
- 0:47We, you know, had a little video with coach Russell, which was
- 0:50awesome. But anyway, we're going to take
- 0:52a little step back, talk about kind of women's team and
- 0:56Selection Sunday work our way through to our experience.
- 0:59Cameron Indoor for my first time there.
- 1:01Porter, is that your first time? There was my first time there in
- 1:03that, in that temple of basketball, and we'll talk about
- 1:06that for sure. And so we'll talk about that and
- 1:08then a little bit of, you know, our thoughts on next year and I
- 1:13guess what the summer may may hold for us as your favorite
- 1:17Spiders basketball podcast. But anyway, let's talk about
- 1:21Selection Sunday Porter. I know we got, I guess, you
- 1:25know, the team wasn't really ready to do a giant party for
- 1:31Selection Sunday cuz unlike like last year, I think it was kind
- 1:35of a given they were getting an at large bid.
- 1:37Two years ago they won the tournament.
- 1:39This was very 5050. So as media members, we got
- 1:43invited. So kind of thank you for the
- 1:46school to inviting us to a selection show.
- 1:50But what was what? What was your experience like,
- 1:52Porter? Oh, I thought it was fantastic.
- 1:54I mean, we went in was the Spider Hall, which is the upper
- 1:57level of the Quealy Athletic Center there, and they had set
- 2:01out chairs behind where the team was going to sit.
- 2:03You have that ginormous TV on the wall that took, it's like
- 2:07the size of a house, which was just a special place to watch
- 2:10it. We, we networked a little bit,
- 2:13talked to some of the folks that were there.
- 2:14That was kind of fun. They had food and nice little
- 2:17food spread in the back. You and I had kind of just
- 2:22recorded with Kenny and I had to swing by.
- 2:24I had a quick church meeting that I had to attend.
- 2:26And then we, we met up there right at the, at the time of the
- 2:29show, Coach Roussell, to his credit, kind of came out and
- 2:33said, hey, folks, put your phones away.
- 2:36I don't want anybody breaking the news, good or bad, before we
- 2:39get it. So we want to all learn
- 2:41simultaneously. So we all put our phones in our
- 2:43pockets, turn them off. So we were watching with the
- 2:46team and, and probably about 40 to 50, you know, close
- 2:50supporters of the team as the news broke.
- 2:53And it was it was legit chaos. When I'll say this, the screen
- 2:59it. So we're sitting behind the
- 3:01teams. The screen kind of froze for a
- 3:02second, but that the audio kept going and I just heard Nebraska
- 3:07Richmond and everybody jumped up except for me.
- 3:10And that's a different story. Everybody jumped up to to
- 3:15celebrate, but I didn't see it. I heard it before I saw it and.
- 3:19I'll tell you one thing, this is kind of criticism of the
- 3:21selection show is like for the the teams that are in that first
- 3:274 does not really a first four reveal.
- 3:30It is like, well, here's Baylor and they were up against
- 3:34Richmond or Nebraska. Yeah.
- 3:35So it's like, I mean, that's a poor way to announce that.
- 3:38Especially like if the for some of the first four teams, like
- 3:41they're the last teams in, you would think you'd have some even
- 3:44when you get. I mean, I, I, I like how they go
- 3:46bracket by bracket, but at some point when you get to like,
- 3:49well, this is our first bracket with the first four-game and in
- 3:52the, and you show your own little bracket of the first four
- 3:55and be like, we've got Nebraska. Yeah, against Richmond, like, it
- 3:59was just like a throne in there. And so, well, and I don't know,
- 4:02I didn't notice the screen freezing, but it was just like
- 4:04you heard it before. You saw it.
- 4:06You saw? It right and there's I mean
- 4:08that's I mean opposite maybe that's what.
- 4:09It was and then everybody jumped up.
- 4:11So I the screen froze for me 'cause I saw the backs of of the
- 4:13team. But I would say the the IT was
- 4:17the second bracket they revealed we were in and we knew we'd be
- 4:20on 11 or 12 line because we were going to be one of the last
- 4:23teams if we made it. And so we were waiting for the
- 4:2611th and the twelves largely. I don't think any of us saw us
- 4:29being the 8-9 or 10. So we kind of were waiting
- 4:32anticipate in anticipation. And then you heard Richmond and
- 4:34it was just chaos, which is great.
- 4:36So important question for you who has got better dance moves,
- 4:41Elaine Bennis from Seinfeld or Coach Russell?
- 4:45Because that celebration was Guy.
- 4:47With leg kick and it was almost I, I, I'm trying to think of the
- 4:51analogy. It was almost, you know, it was
- 4:54a, it was a triumphant, like almost like a worldwide
- 4:56wrestling, you know, celebration, you know, just kind
- 4:59of like the, the arms came wide, the leg came way high.
- 5:02It was like, you know, stomp on your opponent kind of like a,
- 5:05like a, like an exalt. He was just super excited.
- 5:08And it was, yeah, it was legit natural to see that that
- 5:12excitement for him. And yeah, it was nice.
- 5:14I was in the second bracket. So it's one of those like just
- 5:18imagine if you don't hear your name and you're waiting for the
- 5:20third or you wait for 4th and you're Oh yeah, you're like, is
- 5:23it going to happen or not? So it was, it was kind of
- 5:25thoroughly, which was nice. And let's talk for a second.
- 5:27I mean, only time in the history of Richmond basketball we've had
- 5:31back-to-back at larges. So what a credit to Russell and
- 5:35staff and the and the senior leadership of this team.
- 5:38Just, you know, just a special achievement.
- 5:41And then this is the only Richmond basketball team in
- 5:44history to have three consecutive NCAA appearances,
- 5:47right? Three in a row.
- 5:49Again, these are these are unparalleled achievements in
- 5:51Richmond basketball. And that's the that's the whole
- 5:54program. I mean, Rochelle has built a
- 5:56program that sustains success. We can talk about next year
- 6:01towards the end of the episode a little bit, but like it is a, it
- 6:04is a juggernaut of, of, of women's basketball and everybody
- 6:09labels us a mid major and we are mid major.
- 6:11I, I acknowledge that. However, Gonzaga was a mid major
- 6:15until they were not in men's basketball, right.
- 6:18Connecticut, you know, probably was not considered a major in
- 6:21women's basketball until they hired Gino Remo.
- 6:23So I look at this is like this is just, you know, steps on a on
- 6:27a journey with a great staff, a great coach, a great program.
- 6:32So I'm just really, really happy for what the ladies achieved
- 6:35this year. And and that selection show for
- 6:38me was probably the highlight of doing this podcast, Tom.
- 6:41I mean, I'll be honest, it was we're not doing it for the
- 6:43money. You know, each of these podcasts
- 6:46are still brought to you by Porter and Tom.
- 6:48Yeah, that's right. But like just getting invited to
- 6:50that and seeing that moment that that made it worth it for me.
- 6:54Yeah, and let's not forget, I mean, the coach said this, you
- 6:56know, before the show started. Like the team somehow he kind of
- 7:00got probably the vote or the team captains to agree that they
- 7:03were going to do this. Like the the the players did not
- 7:05have to put themselves out there and he and they didn't know what
- 7:08was going to happen. There was a, you know, probably
- 7:11is just as big of a chance that we went through the four
- 7:14brackets and they didn't hear their name And they were there,
- 7:17you know, in that state with the fans or, you know, some fans and
- 7:22a lot of media kind of right behind them.
- 7:24So, you know, credit to the team kind of how however that came
- 7:27about where they decided like, we want to be there, we want, we
- 7:30want, we want to be on, you know, that, you know, a show in
- 7:34a sense. And that could have been a sad
- 7:36one. Thankfully it was a joyous 1.
- 7:40I I did notice afterwards some of the players kind of hitting
- 7:42the table that had like the, you know, the brownies and cookies.
- 7:45So they they deserve that. Oh yeah, that reward after
- 7:49hearing they were, they were they were in the in the show.
- 7:52And you saw the assistant coaches, they scrambled
- 7:53immediately. They weren't, they went to work
- 7:55like the second they heard that we won the guys, they had a
- 7:57celebration hug from coach yourself.
- 7:59And then they would there's the assistants were off to work
- 8:01working on a game plan, etcetera.
- 8:03So. Yeah, that's right.
- 8:04So. But the cool thing about it,
- 8:05Tom, for me too, is like it started the the process for us
- 8:10because like I, I had kind of plans set up for the second-half
- 8:12of the week. I cancelled all of them.
- 8:14You know, I'm like, I'm going to Durham, right.
- 8:15Once we saw I was driving distance, I would have flown it
- 8:18too if it was we had to fly, but I was, I was going to the first
- 8:20round game. And to, you know, as spider
- 8:23fans, you know, we don't, we're not Duke in terms of like every
- 8:27year we're in the tournament. So when we make the tournament,
- 8:29it's a big deal. And it's worth, you know,
- 8:32travelling out to. And so I was, I was excited.
- 8:36I, I cancelled the second-half of my week and I, I made, I made
- 8:40plans to drive to Durham right away.
- 8:42How about just this? Maybe it's a little bit to next
- 8:45year, but it's like 3 in a row and Ali is the only junior on
- 8:49the roster. So she's her freshman,
- 8:52sophomore, junior year in the tournament, Yeah.
- 8:55She's the only person in program history who might make 4.
- 8:58And I don't, I don't think we're going to make the NCAA's next
- 9:00year, folks. It's going to be a very young
- 9:02team. But I mean, you know, we could,
- 9:05I mean, you know, put resell together in the a 10 tournament
- 9:07with any team and it's a dangerous out right.
- 9:09So if Ali, if Ali comes back, and I'm really hopeful she does
- 9:13because you know what is what a legacy she's built for herself
- 9:16now at Richmond, you know, second team all A10 a chance
- 9:19next year to probably end up being a first team all A10
- 9:22player. And you know, I mean, that
- 9:24probably puts Ali in the Hall of Fame.
- 9:26I mean, 3 instantly appearances is unparalleled post season
- 9:30success. Other than you pretty much
- 9:31Rachel and Jayden and Maggie. So like that in and of itself.
- 9:35Plus you get 2 all A10, you know, years.
- 9:38That's a that's a Hall of Fame career, right?
- 9:39All of a sudden, yeah. And, and, and coach will say, I
- 9:42mean it a little bit, kind of talking about this freshman
- 9:44class and what to expect. It's like Ali didn't play much
- 9:47her freshman year. Yeah, So, and look, with, you
- 9:49know, she had a great year last year, you know, stepped it up
- 9:52again this year. So yeah, we got a bunch of
- 9:54freshmen who actually got a lot of minutes this year.
- 9:57Yeah, some more than others. So there's a lot to come.
- 9:59We'll get to that in a bit. But anyway, so we went down to
- 10:01Durham. There was a nice pre game event
- 10:04at kind of a hotel they have right on campus that was walking
- 10:07distance from Cameron indoor. So that was a a great
- 10:10opportunity to kind of hang out with whatever 100 Spider fans or
- 10:14yeah, there's. Been 100 folks there.
- 10:15I got a chance to meet Ryan Colton.
- 10:17He's in the he's one of the assistant athletic directors.
- 10:20His wife Brittany talked to them for a little while.
- 10:22That was lovely. I thought that was a, you know,
- 10:24great representatives of the of Richmond.
- 10:26I met Doctor Halleck and his wife, his wife Tina.
- 10:29Tina's a Lister, by the way, Tom, she mentioned she listened
- 10:31to our pod. She recognized us, which was
- 10:34great. And so thank you for listening
- 10:37to the pod. Met Jim Merritt down there.
- 10:39He was there that they put out a nice spread.
- 10:42You know, it's a, it's a, it's a nice spread for, you know,
- 10:45people who make the track or who are local.
- 10:48We, we had a contingent with us. We had RC Cola flying from New
- 10:51York. We had D Hall and his wife drive
- 10:55down from Vienna. We had your your your good
- 10:58buddy. From Doctor.
- 10:59Durrell. Of his wife.
- 11:01Yeah, we had a nice contingent show up.
- 11:03The food was good and they had a cash bar.
- 11:07I I was working, so I didn't partake until about half time of
- 11:11the game itself. So yeah, it was it was it was
- 11:14good. I thought the I thought they,
- 11:16they did a nice job. One of our listeners, Rogers,
- 11:17came over and talked to us a little bit.
- 11:18So that was fun. You know, after the pre game, I,
- 11:24I, you know, we had, we bought tickets because we support,
- 11:26we're supporting the women's basketball thing.
- 11:28So we don't, we bought tickets for ourselves, even though Tom
- 11:30and I also had media passes we could get in without paying.
- 11:33We bought tickets and that was a good, I thought, a good move.
- 11:36But we wanted to sit together and we didn't.
- 11:37Sit with all the crowd. Right.
- 11:38Either so. But I had to go over and get our
- 11:40media passes or at least try to get both of them.
- 11:42I was able to get mine. I wasn't able to get yours so I
- 11:44walked over a little bit early. Nice walk across to the to
- 11:48Cameron and door. It's kind of there's a nice quad
- 11:52right outside of it where you've got the bookstore on one side,
- 11:54the football stadium, Cameron indoor.
- 11:56It's it's a really nice set up. They've got their Duke.
- 11:59I have never been to Duke University.
- 12:00This is my first trip. So I really liked that.
- 12:03I did get lost looking for the media entrance by the way.
- 12:06The signage was not quite as good as it wasn't Henrico, but I
- 12:10did eventually find it got my pass that gave me access to
- 12:13pretty much anywhere I wanted to go in the building.
- 12:15So my first time walking into Cameron Indoor was kind of
- 12:19through a side door and then I walked onto the floor and man,
- 12:25for a basketball fan, that was just that was just a special
- 12:28moment. That is a temple for basketball
- 12:30fans. If you've never seen a game
- 12:31there, folks, I heavily recommend it.
- 12:34It's just, it's just amazing. Yeah, I mean every seats a good
- 12:37seat there. This probably I didn't count,
- 12:41but probably 100 different banners hanging up which are
- 12:44kind of men's and women's, whether it's ACC.
- 12:47Title or a lot of banners? Or NCAA appearances and that I
- 12:51think, you know, I think the men's team had five championship
- 12:53banners up there. Which are the bigger ones?
- 12:55I will. Some of you who are our faithful
- 12:59listeners have heard me say this before, like you, you look how
- 13:03places like that do banners and then you come to the Robinson
- 13:05there where they're like tucked away and hidden up against the
- 13:08wall and you can barely you can't read them if you're on the
- 13:10other side of the stadium. Like I wish for the the before
- 13:14we did all the renovations, our banners like hung from the
- 13:16rafters and we don't have many of them, but it's still kind of
- 13:19look when you you could see them and you could read them.
- 13:22And the ladies are stockpiling some banners, man.
- 13:24Yeah, and it's a little bit of, you know, you're hot.
- 13:27You put them up against the wall because you're worried someone
- 13:30might not be able to see. Like, like, I want to get to the
- 13:34point where our fans can't see the court from their seat very
- 13:36well because there's too many banners in their face.
- 13:39Like, right, well, let's, I want, let's, let's get those
- 13:41banners where you can read them from any part of the stadium.
- 13:44We're going to need more banners to do that too.
- 13:46So we gotta and it sounds like, I mean, you know, on the spend
- 13:50side, we're going to be spending some money so in the portal.
- 13:53So that that I think will come our way.
- 13:55Hey, a couple other things about Cameron experience.
- 13:57So I did. We did get a review on the
- 14:00pretzel. I was told it was a 12 out of
- 14:0210. I had the pretzel.
- 14:03It was legit dude. It was really, really good.
- 14:05So. I got it without salt because I
- 14:07can't have my blood pressure spike so I'm literally like.
- 14:10Is that because you're working or that's because it's in
- 14:12general you go? I don't know, man.
- 14:15Like, you know, I get old and blood pressure starts to go up
- 14:17and you can't tell why. It's not like I've got a ton of
- 14:19stress. So I'm not sure.
- 14:21And when you walk around the concourse Cameron Indoor,
- 14:24there's a lot of kind of history there that try to tell the story
- 14:28and actually intent, I think intentionally some of those
- 14:32photos from the history like look older than they really are.
- 14:35Sometimes. The thing that I, you know,
- 14:38reading some of those, I think this was that half time I was
- 14:39entertained to know And for kind of kind of old spiders like us,
- 14:43we remember the days of having to do class registration where
- 14:45you went up to a table and had to get in line to like get into
- 14:49a class. There was one of the write ups.
- 14:51There was like back in the day, like there was the concourse at
- 14:54Cameron where all the students went to kind of register for
- 14:57class. It reminded me of the some of
- 15:01the good old days and some of the craziness of, of getting to
- 15:04the front of the line and hearing like, oh, that class is
- 15:06full. And then it's like, oh, now, now
- 15:08what do I do? You're like, now what classes am
- 15:10I gonna skip? Right.
- 15:12Yeah, They don't have to worry about any of that.
- 15:13But anyway, yeah, Cameron was awesome.
- 15:15We we had nice seats. Every seats was good.
- 15:18You guys sent into amazing section.
- 15:19We were section 6 I think, right?
- 15:21Yeah. Now I will tell you, I think the
- 15:22attendance was like 700 and something.
- 15:24So it's like, that's what U of R used to be like, yeah, you know,
- 15:28four years ago. I'd say Richmond probably had
- 15:30between 3:50 and 400 of the people there came down from
- 15:33Richmond. It was a nice, a nice crew
- 15:34traveled and that that's a credit to the program.
- 15:36Right, yeah. I don't know who it was, but we,
- 15:38I think we had like a local high school band, like with the
- 15:41Richmond T-shirts. They sounded great.
- 15:44They sounded great and. They, they sounded awesome.
- 15:47They had like, they had like four or five tubas, but like.
- 15:50They didn't. They weren't playing songs that
- 15:53we're used to hearing at the Robin Center either, So it was
- 15:55like, but it was a great. I'm not sure and.
- 15:57So give credit. Whoever paid for that on the
- 15:59Richmond side did did a solid because.
- 16:01That was yeah, I'm glad we had it.
- 16:03But. But anyway, Nebraska, what's?
- 16:07Interesting. Can I tell you one little kind
- 16:08of complaining story here? So, so I get out on the floor,
- 16:11right, and I'm got my media pass.
- 16:13I'm standing underneath the basket and our ladies are
- 16:16warming up next to me. And Nebraska has this inflatable
- 16:19mascot. I guess he's famous little red,
- 16:21I think his name is. I'm not sure.
- 16:23But anyway, he's, he literally is, you know, probably about 8
- 16:26feet tall. And the top half of it just
- 16:28jiggles back and forth when you, you know, whatever.
- 16:31So inflatable things. Right, the thing comes over and
- 16:34and and and does like an Ace Ventura to me in a way.
- 16:36It's like just right in my face just wagging the because I have
- 16:39my Richmond gear on and my media.
- 16:41So like it's kind of annoying me, right?
- 16:43It's right next to me and it's like bebop.
- 16:45And so I'm like, whatever. So I went, I went back, found
- 16:47our seats during the first free throws.
- 16:50That mascot was right behind the basket and making all sorts of
- 16:53back and forth movement. And I'm like, you can't, you
- 16:56can't put a mascot directly behind the girl's basket to on
- 17:00her free throws. I mean, you can move it off to
- 17:01the side, but like right behind the basket.
- 17:03To me, that felt like a little bit egregious.
- 17:05And I I. And I think it's Lil red, Lil
- 17:09red, Lil red, Lil red. And it's been voted like the
- 17:12best inflatable mascot in America, by the way.
- 17:15So it's legit, but. So it's it's interesting to me.
- 17:18I mean, nothing you can do about it, but we're like, we're
- 17:20playing a team that has the same kind of red that we're red.
- 17:23So like their fan, like the whole place was red.
- 17:25Oh, and we. Were in a section that was half
- 17:27and half so we had half Nebraska in front of us and Nebraska
- 17:29behind us. But Richmond was mixed into the
- 17:31section, so it was and their. Chants are for Big Red.
- 17:33That's kind of their nickname. So it's like, you know, it
- 17:36wasn't like we all, every spider could have worn red, but every
- 17:39Nebraska fan was wearing red too.
- 17:41So it was. It wasn't like you could tell
- 17:44exactly where the fans were until, you know, the yelling.
- 17:47And I'll say this to their fans are pretty nice people.
- 17:49I mean, they have that Midwestern kind of easygoing
- 17:52nature. Like I didn't.
- 17:53We, we found, I, I found the people very pleasant around us.
- 17:56We were the ones probably making the most noise.
- 17:58Well, they're also pleasant because they went, you know, 11
- 18:02for, 22 for from three-point Land.
- 18:04They opened up a can of whoop ass on this is what you're.
- 18:06Saying, yeah, that's right. We can talk a little bit about
- 18:08the game. I mean, I think, you know, first
- 18:10half we had a great second quarter and I remember we were
- 18:13talking at half time like I think what the second quarter we
- 18:15kind of mucked it up and we got to the foul line.
- 18:18We were driving a lot. We kind of stopped the shooting
- 18:21threes as much and we you know, we defended well in that and I
- 18:26and maybe they stopped doing what was made them successful.
- 18:29So I think they they got 1/2 mean Nebraska got 1/2 time
- 18:33speech of like, you know, you know, go back to what you're
- 18:35good at. But half time we felt pretty
- 18:38good. We took a nice group photo of us
- 18:40all smiling and happy at half. Time.
- 18:42Yeah, we felt like we were right back in that thing.
- 18:44Didn't. We we should have taken a photo
- 18:45after the third quarter like whoa, I think we went, we went
- 18:51so from down to and half to down 16-5 minutes into the.
- 18:55Yeah, we got, we got rolled order.
- 18:56And we haven't scored yet. Felt a little like UCLA.
- 18:59UCLA last year. By the way, can I just give a
- 19:01shout out Brit Prince #23 for Nebraska?
- 19:05We've talked a lot about analytics on this show and
- 19:07that's a jump shot is is fading in the game.
- 19:10Let me tell you what Britt may single handedly bring back the
- 19:13jump shot to college basketball. She is so quick off the dribble
- 19:17and she has one of the prettiest rising jump shots in any
- 19:20direction, right or left in motion in the air that she just
- 19:23drains it. And So what a player she is.
- 19:26And the other girl I'll give a shout out to was #14 I think her
- 19:29name is, is it Kaylin Hike or Kaylin Hake?
- 19:31Kalin Hake. She was just ice water in her
- 19:35veins from three in that second-half.
- 19:37I, Rachelle talked. To her for the game.
- 19:40What's that? She was 4 for five for the game.
- 19:42Yeah, Rachelle talked to her after the game.
- 19:44He in the line, he stopped and talked to her for probably 30
- 19:47seconds to a minute. And I don't know what he said,
- 19:48but I'll have to ask him next time I see him.
- 19:50But she was a she was a a thorn in our side in that second-half.
- 19:53They have a very good team, well coached.
- 19:56Here's the difference in the game.
- 19:57They hit their threes in the first half.
- 19:59We were, I mean, we had open looks.
- 20:02I mean, we had some really good open looks.
- 20:03We just missed our threes. And you know when you're, when
- 20:06you're a team built around the three, if you miss your threes
- 20:08against the top, I think they were a top 30 in the net.
- 20:11You're going to, you're going to lose the game.
- 20:12You got it. We got to play one of our best
- 20:14games to beat A-Team like that, like we played it.
- 20:17Yeah. I mean, I guess the the the part
- 20:18that I would, I mean, you're right.
- 20:20What like they shot 11 for 22 from 3:00 and we are 4 for 23?
- 20:25That's the difference. Those those 7 threes, that's 21
- 20:27points. Like I would it all came back to
- 20:31the the start of that third quarter, yeah, where we didn't,
- 20:34we didn't score for 5 minutes and I don't think it was like we
- 20:38needed to hit our threes like we needed to score.
- 20:41Yeah. And you know, we are scoring
- 20:43from two in the second quarter. We went, I was kind of doing
- 20:46some doing, doing some complicated math this morning.
- 20:49So we went O for 8 before we got our first basket in the 3rd and
- 20:53that was at about the five minute marking and we went down
- 20:55from 2 and half to down 16. So they were making all of their
- 20:59shots. So I mean, I think they get more
- 21:02credit than our defense gets picked on, but obviously our
- 21:06defense wasn't great in the third quarter cuz that team just
- 21:11kind of lit us up. And then we went over 8 and I
- 21:14was looking at the data and I don't think Rachel got a shot
- 21:17and I think Maggie went O for one.
- 21:18So Nebraska's defense came out in the second-half and kind of
- 21:22prevented them from really getting a lot of action in that
- 21:26first 5 minutes. And that we tried to get
- 21:28everybody else involved. We missed some layups, we had
- 21:30some bad turnovers. It was just like a snowball.
- 21:33It felt like the. First time we played Rhode
- 21:34Island, to me, they just, they just, they were on and we
- 21:37weren't. And the second time we played
- 21:39Rhode Island, of course, we won by 20 some points.
- 21:41So like it's the kind of thing where you got like you just have
- 21:44to play. It's insidably tournament
- 21:45basketball. You have to have one of your
- 21:46best games. You're going to play a top 30 or
- 21:4840 team no matter what. You know, we just didn't have
- 21:51our best game. And it doesn't it's not it
- 21:53doesn't take anything away from the fact that this is a three
- 21:57time insidably team that they back-to-back at large.
- 21:59I mean, to me, the magic of the moment was the trip itself,
- 22:04driving to Durham, hanging out with all of the, the people
- 22:08around the program before the game, getting to see, see
- 22:11Cameron Indoor as, as media. I mean, who would have thought
- 22:14we would be doing a media pass for, for an NCAA game in Cameron
- 22:19Indoor. That was just fantastic.
- 22:20And you know, I mean, we got a chance to, to, to just enjoy
- 22:26this ride. I actually bought a, an NCAA
- 22:29shirt with Richmond's logo on it.
- 22:30So that'll be a little keepsake I get out of this whole thing.
- 22:34And you know, we saw, we we saw and actually, quite frankly, we
- 22:37documented, I think we have over 30 hours of spider sound off out
- 22:40there in the ethosphere now. We documented this journey of
- 22:43the special team. And I mean, you know, that was
- 22:45that was a lot of fun, man. I I mean, it was a real, it was
- 22:48a it was a great year. We didn't have to have an
- 22:51incident play tournament game on either side at the end of the
- 22:54year when we did our predictions.
- 22:55I think, you know, we weren't we we thought the ladies could do
- 22:59it. We neither of us had the men in
- 23:01the instantly tournament. I think I had them in the NIT
- 23:03and you had them like 17 wins. You were pretty close.
- 23:05I'll give you credit on that. I think I actually nailed the
- 23:07ladies record, by the way, at the end of the season.
- 23:09So like it, it was a great year to to do the our first year of
- 23:14the podcast, right. And why don't we spending a
- 23:18minute or two and just talk about kind of our go forward
- 23:20plans just to kind of fill people in who who listen to us
- 23:23about what we're thinking here and you know what we're going to
- 23:26do for the for the next. So we.
- 23:27Started this pod in July of last year.
- 23:31And so we haven't really experienced the March and even
- 23:34in July it was kind of what did we talk about because there was
- 23:38only so much going on. We got to a practice I think
- 23:40later in July, maybe it was early August, but so we've got
- 23:44whatever 3 1/2 months until we get to that July time frame.
- 23:48So I think we're going to and some of this, you know, we ask
- 23:51you to give have some patience and, you know, play it by ear.
- 23:54But we're going to try to get out there every couple of weeks
- 23:57with whether it's an interview, obviously over the next month is
- 24:01going to be these teams are getting formed based on the
- 24:04portal. So we'll we'll definitely be
- 24:05back as news comes out on what the portal looks like, both
- 24:09retaining players and new players, because I think both
- 24:11teams are going to be very active.
- 24:14They have to be active in retaining and in bringing,
- 24:17especially on the men's side. We're going to bring in a lot of
- 24:19players, I suspect. But we also got freshmen coming
- 24:23in. So we'll we'll we'll talk more
- 24:25about the freshmen classes. But yeah, I think it's fans.
- 24:29We're I think we'll when we do release, I think we're this is a
- 24:32lot of like we're thinking about, we haven't done it yet,
- 24:34but I think we're kind of stick back to the Mondays like when we
- 24:37are doing weekly in July and August, like we went Mondays is
- 24:41kind of the main date. So I think we're going to kind
- 24:42of try to stick to let's getting Monday releases out and I think
- 24:46we're going to try to do it every other week.
- 24:48We'll see if we always have enough to talk about.
- 24:51And we'd love your feedback on things that you want to hear
- 24:54about as well. I mean, I feel like on my list
- 24:56is kind of the freshman class kind of getting to know them and
- 24:59the and the portal folks that come in is going to be a big
- 25:02part of what I'm hoping we can accomplish over the next.
- 25:05I mean, I'll say this too, like we had a lot of guests this year
- 25:08appreciate first of all, all of our guests coming on.
- 25:11I think, you know, we started off talking about the Sweet 16
- 25:15or sorry about the the Syracuse win, the 35th anniversary of
- 25:19that. We ended kind of our last
- 25:21interview of this season with Kenny Wood from that team.
- 25:23That was a really special moment.
- 25:25We talked to Dairy and we talked to Kendall.
- 25:26We had all kinds of the ladies on the team, both active and
- 25:29past members. We had Aiden Hargarbright on the
- 25:32show, Coach Mooney, Coach Russell, all very supportive.
- 25:35So we appreciate everything they did to support the show.
- 25:37Jason and and Keelan in our first season were fantastic,
- 25:40helping us out, getting access to people.
- 25:44You know, we, we, we put a lot of energy and time and effort.
- 25:48Obviously we're doing this just as a, as a, as a, as a passion
- 25:51project. We don't, we don't have any
- 25:53external sponsors. Not to say we wouldn't, we
- 25:55wouldn't want one breaking even wouldn't be a bad thing to do
- 25:58with this thing eventually. So if you guys want to sponsor
- 26:01us, we're now in 30 different countries.
- 26:02I'd say we have about 200 plus active listeners each episode.
- 26:06So that's it's been kind of an exciting little, you know,
- 26:09progress we've seen on it. But I think we're also, you
- 26:12know, we we put we put a lot of energy into two a week.
- 26:15And so that we you come out of this season a little bit tired
- 26:18and you just need a little bit of a break.
- 26:19So I like the every other week goal.
- 26:21I'm not tired. You're not tired.
- 26:23I'm a little but. It's more of, I mean, what made
- 26:25it easy twice a week was that there was games to talk about.
- 26:28Yeah, that's true. So I think this I, I think we'll
- 26:31look at the next few months until they start practicing
- 26:34again and we can really, you know, get and look at the team.
- 26:37It's kind of I think our focus is going to be on these new
- 26:40teams that are forming and then maybe some interviews of some
- 26:45some other stories from. Yeah, we'll need more stories.
- 26:48I mean, I wish we had, we were doing video back when we had
- 26:51Mike Scrocky, who's our first guest on Spider Sound off
- 26:53because like, you know, that was a great story.
- 26:56We broke it over 2 episodes. We had we had the ladies from
- 27:00last year's team, you know, do Addie and Katie doing an
- 27:02episode. I wish we were doing video.
- 27:03Then Rachel came on before we're doing video.
- 27:06So, you know, really appreciate everybody who was patient with
- 27:09us as we learned how to do this. And I think, you know, over time
- 27:12I'm we've gotten a little bit better.
- 27:13I mean, I might I got the best sound guy in the business on the
- 27:15other side over there. So he's put he's put together
- 27:18some, some wonderful. You know, you don't really
- 27:21realize all the all the subtleness of the transitions
- 27:23between segments and the music and making sure the music fades
- 27:26at the right time. But when we were planning on a
- 27:29multi a multi win tournament, Tom actually is is going to take
- 27:34a little trip here. And so I was going to be the
- 27:36sound guy for anything that we did past this game.
- 27:38And so I've learned how hard it is.
- 27:40And so I got even more respect for what Tom does every day to
- 27:43get. This you know what, something
- 27:44thinking about other things we can do this offseason.
- 27:47Hopefully we can have an interview with our first drafted
- 27:50WNBA player. That would be special.
- 27:53By the way, she, I, I do believe she will get drafted.
- 27:56I think you. Know so the draft is April 13th
- 27:58OK so again that's what's a second-half of April maybe we
- 28:02can we can work that out either way if she doesn't get I mean
- 28:06the WNBA is only so big the draft is not the the the biggest
- 28:11thing it's not you know there's not as many teams as the NBA but
- 28:13we we know she's going to be in camp somewhere yeah I.
- 28:17She'll get. Drafted.
- 28:18Most folks have her as a second round pick.
- 28:20We'll see what happens. I'm sure there's a combine and
- 28:23other things that that the players do before that to really
- 28:26kind of nail down that position. But but all those camps start
- 28:30kind of April 19th right after the draft.
- 28:33So hopefully we can we can get her and hack me.
- 28:36Rachel will probably find herself in ANBA camp as well,
- 28:40trying to be a three-point specialist.
- 28:42Yeah, somebody. Absolutely.
- 28:44I mean, it's a, you know, I mean, it's it's the most viewed
- 28:47episode. I think we put out with Scott
- 28:49Unger's episode. If you haven't watched that one
- 28:51or listen that one, I would heavily encourage you to go back
- 28:53and listen to that one, especially the second-half.
- 28:55It's a story beyond basketball and you realize what an
- 28:58inspiration that Scott and his wife are for their positivity in
- 29:01life. Heavily recommend you listen to
- 29:03that one. That's probably been the the
- 29:06best episode. I feel like I did just because I
- 29:08feel like it was it was beyond just talking about spider hoops.
- 29:12And so yeah, that was a special one for me.
- 29:15How about you? What was your What was your best
- 29:16episode? Yeah, I mean, I I think you
- 29:18mentioned though, I think my favorite was just Scrocky
- 29:20because that was both you're talking about the Kansas game
- 29:23and kind of the story of the basketball being kind of
- 29:26absolutely that was a good Yeah, in a sense taken by one of his
- 29:31manager trained. Yeah.
- 29:32And kind of that surprise I always kind of picture in my
- 29:35head of when Scrocky asked for the ball and then didn't know
- 29:38that the guy stuck snuck it for out of I love it out of Kansas
- 29:42and gave it to him. It's kind of my my favorite
- 29:44story of the year. That was a good idea.
- 29:46We've there will be things to talk about over the next month.
- 29:49Now I hope we, I know we put #1 on the list.
- 29:52When we hear that Coach Russell is coming back, we'll be kind of
- 29:55the thing we're most looking forward to hearing.
- 29:57Top 10 coach in America. And and then hopefully that
- 30:00happens and then it gets into kind of the players.
- 30:03I think on the men's side, when we hear Argo brides coming back,
- 30:05I think we'll be very happy. On the women's side, it's
- 30:08getting getting Ali coming back. None of this is a given these
- 30:11days. I mean, she played a wonderful,
- 30:15wonderful part of defense on 23 yesterday.
- 30:17Yeah. But anyway, so we'll we'll have
- 30:19plenty to talk about. And when there is big news, I
- 30:23think you should expect Porter and I will be talking on the
- 30:25phone and being like, it's now the time.
- 30:28Yeah. But if there's no news, we'll be
- 30:29back in a couple weeks to talk about kind of what we're hearing
- 30:33or what's out there, whether it's kind of concrete news or
- 30:36not. So we're not going away.
- 30:38And again, we're we're open to other ideas or folks you'd love
- 30:41to hear us interview because there's a lot of great stories
- 30:44out there from. Also would love to, we'd love to
- 30:46invest a little bit of money in the spider sound off studio, you
- 30:49know, just to, to create like a backdrop that's that's
- 30:52consistent with the quality of the sound that we've been
- 30:55putting out, you know, so I'm still working on my partner on
- 30:57that one. Yes I do.
- 30:59I'm not a non profit and I do some of the calls.
- 31:02It's the bluegrass jam that's in May.
- 31:04And I do some of the calls and I just hook up to the podcast
- 31:07equipment because it sounds better than my laptop.
- 31:10And they, they see all the spider stuff behind me and
- 31:13they're like, and they don't even know I'm on a podcast.
- 31:15I'm like, you know, what are you doing?
- 31:16And I'm like, oh, there's a reason for that.
- 31:20But anyway, so look forward to the next few months.
- 31:24Again, kind of reach out if you've got some ideas.
- 31:27We we, we'd love to hear hear from you.
- 31:29But until next time, make. Sure, you like and subscribe to
- 31:33and this is Porter. And this is spiders sounding
- 31:38off. See you.
