- 0:00Hello everyone, and welcome back to Kenny.
- 0:03Conversation brought to you by Jags, the leader in high
- 0:07performance aftermarket car parts.
- 0:10Remember to go to jags.com for everything you need to fix your
- 0:14hot rod. And here we are in we're
- 0:17approaching December and they're telling me that they got a lot
- 0:20of good Christmas stuff for sale.
- 0:23And remember, Jeep parts and truck parts in stock.
- 0:27Well, you're wondering, who is this young man?
- 0:30We've started something new. He is the second driver in
- 0:34Driver Spotlight, drivers that are winning.
- 0:38But nobody knows him a lot right yet.
- 0:41But they know him in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
- 0:44Now they're starting to know him throughout America.
- 0:47Ty Frederickson. Ty, how are you doing?
- 0:50I'm doing really good. How about you, Kenny?
- 0:53Man, I'm doing good. I've heard so much about you.
- 0:56You're 15 years old. Are you from Webster, MN before
- 1:02we get started? I can't help it.
- 1:05I love that cheese trophy in the background now.
- 1:08Is that the meant? Is that meant to be a piece of
- 1:10cheese? Yes, it is.
- 1:12It's the Dick Trickle trophy. We're weirs.
- 1:17Machining made it. It used to be like a big old
- 1:19block of cheese that had a 24 on it.
- 1:21So they spiced up this year and I was lucky to lucky enough to
- 1:24win it. But you're you're not just
- 1:27lucky, you are good. And that's why you are on the
- 1:30driver spotlight. We're shining the spotlight on
- 1:33Ty Frederickson. I've been paying attention.
- 1:37They're getting jealous of you up there and we're trying to
- 1:39calm everybody down. Every once in a while, somebody
- 1:44comes along in racing every 10 years or so, and you are that
- 1:49person. You are incredibly talented.
- 1:52But we've got to tell everybody about you, who you are, what
- 1:56you're up to. You are #36 and we're going to
- 1:58be dropping pictures of your race car in here as we go.
- 2:03Where did that #36 come from? So my dad rent, so when he first
- 2:09started racing he is number 27 and I guess you didn't like the
- 2:13number that much and somebody said to go go up on the two and
- 2:17go down on the seven and I guess it's stuck from there.
- 2:22I'm laughing. I was expecting something like,
- 2:25well, we love Joe Shear, you know, from Beloit, WI, or I like
- 2:30Kenny Wallace #36 but I love the 36.
- 2:36Usually don't ask a lot about the number, but I'm older than
- 2:40you. I'm 61, so you're running my
- 2:42number. So I'm a I'm a big fan.
- 2:45That's awesome. Well now do you have another
- 2:49trophy in in the area there at all or does that trophy turn
- 2:53sideways? You got the model of Dick's car.
- 2:55Is that in that trophy? Yes, it is.
- 2:58Oh, let me see. Oh, look at that.
- 3:02Look at that. It's got a light in there, so it
- 3:06lights up and it changes all different colors.
- 3:09Now is that about 5/8 solid aluminum that's I don't.
- 3:13Know what it is, but it's really heavy.
- 3:16Yeah, and Chad Weir's made that. Yep.
- 3:20Oh that then that's a bad ass trophy Ty.
- 3:22Yeah, it. Is all right, let's get started.
- 3:25OK, Ty Frederickson, everyone. Asphalt.
- 3:30How about said dirt, asphalt, super light model, the highest
- 3:35form of super light models. You're getting it on up there.
- 3:39Miss Minnesota, Wisconsin. Let's start like this.
- 3:45Why do we have tie on here? Well, he's 15 years old.
- 3:50He won the 2024 Quickie development driver program
- 3:55champion. That is a very hard deal to win.
- 3:58You're the 2024 Tundra Super late model champion and rookie
- 4:04of the year. Let's start with the quickie
- 4:06win. You're a young man, but I'm sure
- 4:10people told you about Alan Kowicki.
- 4:13Oh, yeah. So if you're anywhere in
- 4:16Wisconsin or anywhere around the country in that matter,
- 4:20everybody knows who Alan Kowicki is if they're a racing fan.
- 4:23And so I heard about the program for a while.
- 4:27I signed up for it not this year but the year before and I didn't
- 4:30get on it at all. But this is my first time being
- 4:33on it and my first race or my second race at Slinger is
- 4:38Stomping Grounds. People are coming up to me left
- 4:40and right telling Alan Quickie Stores is a really cool deal.
- 4:44Yeah, you're so young. And I I your dad is awesome.
- 4:48Your father is a badass. Real quick.
- 4:51Not real quick. It's all about you.
- 4:53But your your father, Dan and your beautiful family.
- 4:57They love you so much. Tell me how much your family
- 5:01means to you. Yeah, we're almost the family
- 5:05run team. We got one guy helping us who is
- 5:07not blood related, but my whole family goes.
- 5:11We our hauler sleeps 8 people so our whole family gets to come
- 5:16with us. So it's really packed in there.
- 5:18But we we always have a good time.
- 5:22I would say one of the reasons you're good is because you're
- 5:24able to compartmentalize. I I would think that when you
- 5:27have that much family with you, does your family keep you calm?
- 5:31Do they make you nervous? What's it like to have everybody
- 5:35piled around that truck and trailer?
- 5:36Is it OK? Yeah, my mom is usually makes me
- 5:40food after practice, so it's always nice when you're done
- 5:44getting all sweaty and making laughs and talking to your dad
- 5:47about set up to this walk in the hall and you got some chicken
- 5:49Nuggets waiting for you. So so it works opposite your
- 5:54your family has a calming effect on you.
- 5:56You you get away from the back of the trailer and you go up and
- 6:00it's like a home. Oh, I want to say Harper, you
- 6:04got to go up on an interview. Yeah, we can edit all this out.
- 6:07It's good. It's good.
- 6:08We can. We can edit all this.
- 6:10It, it, it it, it'll be like it never happened.
- 6:14She just came in here calling me fat because I took.
- 6:16A chair. OK, look, look, look in.
- 6:21Casey doesn't want to edit this out, so when you get out of the
- 6:26race car and you come walking back up to the truck, it's like
- 6:30walking into your house. Your Mama calms you down.
- 6:33Yeah, and then I just sit there, lay on the couch, eat some
- 6:37chicken Nuggets in for qualifying.
- 6:40Your father was so good, he won a lot.
- 6:44Dan Frederickson, how does your dad communicate with you?
- 6:50Does he rough you up or does he just tell you what's up?
- 6:53So he's like, he's my crew chief, car owner, spotter.
- 6:57But during the practice it's like a normal crew chief driver
- 7:02conversation. And then he says he's a spotter
- 7:05during the race. If I had more call him like a
- 7:07driver, coach, he he's, he gives me advice more than he says
- 7:11inside or outside. OK.
- 7:14So I want to get in, I want to get into something for everybody
- 7:17up there in the North. You, you can have everything
- 7:22given to you, but if you don't drive that car, you remind me of
- 7:25Mark Martin. His father was Julian Martin and
- 7:29and, and Mark knew how to drive that race car.
- 7:33Where in the world do you think this is just part of your jeans?
- 7:37Because when you get to that race car, you got to know how to
- 7:40roll off the gas. You got to know how to apply
- 7:43brake. Did this come naturally to you
- 7:45or tell me the the process? Well, everything I go through my
- 7:50dad has been through before. Like he knows when I give him
- 7:55feedback about something that I could adjust in the car, he he
- 7:58says it by the next corner and I can just learn on that and try
- 8:03to get better throughout the laps.
- 8:05And now that I raced 41 times this year in a super light
- 8:08model, I kind of know what to do now and it's really him helping
- 8:13me. Definitely has boosted my career
- 8:16quite a bit. You know, Ty, I can relate with
- 8:19you. When I first started racing, I
- 8:21got a Dylan race car years ago. My brother Rusty had one.
- 8:25So Rusty was all, you know, I knew what to do because I was
- 8:28with Rusty. And then he would tell me, you
- 8:31know, I knew what was up because I'd been there.
- 8:33Do you feel like that's the same for you?
- 8:35You kind of know what's up because you grew up watching
- 8:37your father. Yeah, I kind of know like what
- 8:41what the base was going into super late model race because I
- 8:44was in the pits of my dad for years before I started actually
- 8:47racing. So I kind of got the gist of
- 8:51what was going on. But being the driver, I think
- 8:54I'm very glad I'm the driver now because it's a lot more fun
- 8:57doing that than taking tires off and doing all that stuff.
- 9:00Yeah. And we watch this with Dale
- 9:02Earnhardt Junior and Chase Elliott.
- 9:04It was like, how are they so good?
- 9:06And we all agree that Dale Junior, Chase Elliott, they
- 9:10absorbed. They watch, you know, their dad,
- 9:13Bill, and Dale Senior watched them.
- 9:15So you feel like you absorbed a lot by just watching your
- 9:19father? Yeah, definitely, for sure.
- 9:21Like I'd always stand next to him and when my uncle would go
- 9:25along, I'd always stand next to them when they're conversating
- 9:28about the the setup and what they're going to do to change it
- 9:32and what helped on the last adjustment, what it made worse.
- 9:35So I always just kept my ear in the conversation and now it's
- 9:39paying off for me. So listen up, everybody.
- 9:43He's not some spoiled little kid.
- 9:45He he, he absorbed it. He's got to drive the car.
- 9:49I hear all about you. All my friends up there, they
- 9:51tell me that you're a bad asset that you can really drive.
- 9:54OK, I guess I just had to defend you a little bit because you
- 9:58know, all my friends up there, they said, man, this this 15
- 10:02year old kid is winning everything And, and, and the big
- 10:04boys don't like it. So just a shout out.
- 10:08We watched Mark Martin go through this winning everything.
- 10:13Job well done. Ty.
- 10:14I want to go back to the Quickie Development Driver Program
- 10:19champion. How hard was that to accomplish?
- 10:24So when I joined it, I thought if I just won, I don't know, a
- 10:31bunch of races more than everybody else, I thought I'd be
- 10:34able to win it. But I think I had like three or
- 10:37four more wins by the 1st voting period than everybody else.
- 10:44And then I saw that I was in second by quite a few points and
- 10:47I stepped up my community giving back.
- 10:52So I did a lot of that. And then I won a few more races
- 10:55and I was still in second so that I just turned on the I just
- 10:59flipped on the boosters from there and went full out on
- 11:02everything. I did a bunch of charity work,
- 11:05won 1010 races and it paid off in the end.
- 11:10OK, this is news to me and news to everybody, so I like this.
- 11:14So you're telling me winning is not enough to be to be like an
- 11:18Allen quickie, you have to be a good person?
- 11:21Is that part of the program? Oh yeah, it's a huge part of the
- 11:24program. So they have competition points
- 11:27and I think I had around 1:50 or 1:30 and my final points was
- 11:32like 1100. So a lot of the points comes
- 11:36from charity and giving back and and that's a very big part of it
- 11:41and I think I raised around $33,000.
- 11:46This is awesome. You know, I've given speeches at
- 11:50the quickie program, but I didn't realize that part of this
- 11:54program is teaching you the right way to race.
- 11:57Because we see a lot of winners out there, but they're pricks.
- 12:02You not, you don't want nothing to do with them.
- 12:05And yeah, but you're doing it right, buddy, that that means a
- 12:09lot. Listen up everybody.
- 12:11That quickie program is isn't no joke.
- 12:13Well done. I see that you raised some money
- 12:17for the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund.
- 12:20I got my notes. You know, I end up and of course
- 12:24you did some really good stuff for the North Carolina Disaster
- 12:28Relief Fund and the epilepsy cause both of them are they were
- 12:33they both through the quickie program?
- 12:35Yeah, so the Epilepsy 1, my sister and my grandmother or my
- 12:41grandmother do have epilepsy and there's this walk going on in
- 12:47Saint Paul. So we I did that and like a
- 12:52little thing for them to make them feel better.
- 12:54And it was a really cool deal in the North Carolina Hurricane or
- 12:59disaster relief. I partnered up with TPC 2311
- 13:04Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing to raise money.
- 13:09And so the farthest S Menards was in West Virginia or
- 13:15Virginia, I don't know which one.
- 13:17So we bought about $8000 worth of goods from there like tarps,
- 13:23jackets, leather gloves, food items, children's medicine.
- 13:28And we all sent we sent them to the Toyota Performance Center
- 13:32and then they delivered it to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2311 and
- 13:36they had their helicopters flight into the mountains.
- 13:39Wow, well done. Ty it.
- 13:42It's hard for people to pay it forward and your family and
- 13:45yourself. You did a real good, real good
- 13:48job. That that's that's very
- 13:49heartfelt. OK, so you win the the the
- 13:52quickie development driver program.
- 13:55That's big. That means everybody in NASCAR
- 13:57sees it. We've watched some great drivers
- 14:00win that program and go on to have wonderful careers.
- 14:03So the Quickie Development Driver Program Championship is a
- 14:07no joke. If you can win that, that means
- 14:09number one, you can drive. That means you're a good human
- 14:12and and you know what to do. Tell me about this 2024 Tundra
- 14:18Super Late Model Champion and Rookie of the Year.
- 14:23So the Tundra series is A5 race series that go to I think 3 or 4
- 14:28different tracks. And the first race was at
- 14:32Kakana, which I don't know if you've raced there your brothers
- 14:36have. And so my it was my first time
- 14:40there. We unloaded fasts in practice,
- 14:43qualified fast time. I think we started 14th or 16th
- 14:47and drove to the lead and won the race.
- 14:49And that was just a great start to the year with the Tundra
- 14:52series. And then we had a rough race at
- 14:56Marshfield. I think we finished like 7th or
- 14:586th. But the the the next race was
- 15:02Dels Raceway Park. I qualified like 7th, drove to
- 15:06the lead and we had I had a left front shock break like 2 laps
- 15:10after I got to the lead and I was able to hold off 2nd till
- 15:13about 20 to go. So that was a hard one to lose.
- 15:16And then the next race which was at Golden Sands Speedway in
- 15:21Plover, WI, I won that race. I don't, I don't know why I
- 15:26qualified for that one. And then I had like a 20
- 15:29something point lead over second going into the last race at
- 15:32Plover. And I, I, I didn't qualify that
- 15:37good because we had a little crate motor and in the Super
- 15:39Lake class. So they would always beat me in
- 15:41qualifying, but I would be able to keep the tires under me for
- 15:45the race. So I'd be able to go by them.
- 15:47And I drove to the front. I think I was like top three or
- 15:50something And then there's a few fast cars coming by me, but I
- 15:54didn't have to beat them to win the championship, so I just let
- 15:57him go and I think I finished fourth.
- 15:59Smart racing. Where did you where did you
- 16:01learn to race like that? You know, Mark Martin here, we
- 16:04keep bringing Mark Martin up. You know, in NASCAR, he taught
- 16:07people that we're racing the leader.
- 16:10You know, if if you're not the leader, we're we're not racing
- 16:13each other that the leaders up there.
- 16:15Where did you learn to let people go?
- 16:16Who taught you that? Yeah, so my dad's been through
- 16:20all this before and he's always, he's the guy in my ear telling
- 16:23me smart things to do. And he's like the guy who was
- 16:28second in points is behind you. You do not need to beat this guy
- 16:32to win the championship. So I just pointed my finger out
- 16:35the door, let him go by and held on to held on the 4th and to win
- 16:39the championship. Wow, good job.
- 16:41Because you, you could have got, if you would have tried to held
- 16:43them off, you might have got spun out.
- 16:45And then there that guy is making laps and you're like, oh,
- 16:48why didn't I let him go? So man, great teamwork.
- 16:51Your dad knows what he's doing. It reminds me of Rusty tutoring
- 16:55me along the way. So we're, we're getting this
- 16:58dynamic now we're learning how you got racing.
- 17:02Your, your father Dan is kind of like my brother Rusty's like,
- 17:05I've been through this before. Here's what you need to do.
- 17:09I want to go to New Smyrna for a little bit.
- 17:12I read a really interesting story where your dad took you
- 17:16down there and he said he wanted to put you through the grinder.
- 17:22You know he's put you through the grinder to make sure you're
- 17:24ready. Can you think of anything down
- 17:29at New Smyrna where we know long straightaways, tight corners,
- 17:33people are grinding on each other.
- 17:35It's hard to pass, as your dad taught you, anything to do.
- 17:39When you get to where there's fifty cars, everybody hates each
- 17:42other. What does your dad taught you
- 17:46about those moments? Yeah, we went down to New Smyrna
- 17:49because it's 7 races in or I don't know how many races, but
- 17:53in a week. So it's, I mean half a season of
- 17:57racing. Just go in there and learn so
- 18:00much and you got to, you got to keep your car intact so you can
- 18:04finish out the week. And it's super close, hard
- 18:07racing. There's a bunch of good hard
- 18:10competition there that you have to beat and it's just about
- 18:14keeping your nose clean, keeping the fenders on you so you can
- 18:17can continue throughout the week.
- 18:20And your dad learned that from Dick Trickle and so did I.
- 18:23You must first finish to finish first.
- 18:26One of the most most famous quotes in auto racing history by
- 18:31the great Dick Trickle. You know, 400 lap race, 200 lap
- 18:34race. You must first finish to finish
- 18:37first. Well, well done, young man.
- 18:39I, I think that's awesome because I've been down at New
- 18:42Smyrna and, and, and your, your whole week can end in the first
- 18:47couple laps. So I get it.
- 18:50OK. Your dad said he wants you to be
- 18:54a clean racer because he wants you to be good for sponsors.
- 18:58I like that. I I read that.
- 19:00Tell me about that moment. Yeah, you just, it's important
- 19:06to stay clean so everybody has respect for you and nobody's
- 19:10nobody's going out there and trying to crash you.
- 19:12You just stay clean and it attracts sponsors, it attracts
- 19:17fans and it gets respect from all the races, all the fans and
- 19:20all the track promoters. Ty, listen, you're 15 years old.
- 19:26It's like I tell everybody for the new Driver Spotlight series,
- 19:30can't do an hour because you don't have an hour worth of
- 19:32stories. You're you're doing so good.
- 19:36Let's end it like this, my friend.
- 19:38We all know who you are now you want to be a NASCAR racer.
- 19:43But when I read something about you, you said quote UN quote,
- 19:49short track racing is not a bad place to be you.
- 19:54You sound like you're well balanced you, but you want to be
- 19:57a NASCAR racer. Where are you at right now?
- 20:02We're always working to move up the ranks and racing, trying to
- 20:05go to NASCAR, like I said, but if All in all, NASCAR doesn't
- 20:10work out for me, racing short tracks would definitely it'd
- 20:13definitely be a high point. It's probably the hardest racing
- 20:18you could probably get other than NASCAR and the NASCAR
- 20:22drivers, sometimes they come back, run short tracks and they
- 20:26could win Cup races, but it's a real challenge for them to win
- 20:29super late model races. So I think super late models are
- 20:34a really tough challenge and I'd I want to be mad or anything if
- 20:40I race short track for the rest of my life.
- 20:43I'm, I'm serious. I got chills.
- 20:46This reminds me of Ty Majeski. Matt Kenseth, Young man, you're
- 20:52going to make it to the big time.
- 20:54You got the temperament. You got the great driving
- 20:56ability. You're automatically fast.
- 20:58You have speed. Wonderful family.
- 21:00Well, there he is, everybody. Ty Frederickson, 15 years old,
- 21:04out of Webster, Minnesota. Congratulations Tie on all your
- 21:08success. Thank you Kenny, and thank you
- 21:10for having me on the show all. Right, everybody, until the next
- 21:14driver Spotlight here on Kenny Conversation.
- 21:17We'll see you next time.
