- 0:10SPEAKER_00: If you're a Section Four football fan, you're in the right place.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: This is your podcast.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: I'm Coach Smith, and I'll be your host.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Buckle up.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Welcome to our guests, Horseheads Head Coach Kevin Hillman and Horsehead's Mr.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Everything, the 69th recipient of the prestigious Ernie Davis Award, Patrick Laney.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Thank you for joining us and congratulations to both of you.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And we'll start with Coach Hillman.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Coach, what is it about the Horseheads Football Program?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Patrick is the third horse head student athlete in a row and seventh of the last eight to receive the Ernie Davis Award.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: What you got going on?
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: You got some secret sauce, or what?
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Tell me about it.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Well, we got a lot of donors that give a lot of NIL money, so I'm a I can pay a lot of guys.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: No, we're just very fortunate to have a lot of great kids, great athletes, and Patrick's, you know, top notch out of all of them.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: You know, these kids work hard, they commit to what they want to do, and they're just and the big thing too is they're they're great athletes, and they don't just play football, they play other sports as well.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: And I I think you know, just doing that and playing with other great coaches that I that I believe we have in our district, like Coach Scott, Coach Lemoncelly, you know, I just think that you know they they get those things that they need to be great players, and they get those uh you know attributes and habits and you know the work ethic and they get that stuff, and and I just think that's that's why I'm very, very fortunate to get those players.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: You know, you can also look on the other end, you know, we had seven of the last eight who only won one section title, so don't get that out there.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: They might want to play.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: But I would think, yeah, we're just very, very, very fortunate.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: And you know, like Patrick is just he's just a top-notch player.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you're gonna talk to him here in a second here.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: But this guy is, you know, you see all those offensive stats, but you know, I also think he's one of the best, if not the best, corner that you know we've had in our program, and I think in the section.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Um he made so many big plays in the passing game.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: It's not even just the interceptions, it's breaking up plays from across the field and um, you know, knocking down big passes at big moments and making big tackles like he did in the I mean, look at that UE game, that second half, he pretty much spurred the whole thing.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: He had the interception, he made a big tackle in the backfield and he had two touchdown catches.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: He's I mean, he's a he's just an a great player.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: We all set off him.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: And like I said, I've just been very, very fortunate to have such great players like these guys.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I was a defensive coordinator, and somebody like Patrick, when you have to set your defense up to stop him, uh student athletes like that tend to give defensive coordinators flu-like symptoms.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: That really, you know, it's like a you know, it's uh tough to stop them.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And he was all I've broadcast a few of your games on the Vestal Athletics Network, and uh he was also a great decoy.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Um meaning when you know people would load up to cover him either with a bracket or you know, uh, you know, two people, and that the play went someplace else.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So yeah, a lot for that.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So with his go ahead.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, go ahead.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: I just like you were saying, I don't mean uh to cut you off, but yeah, I think I mean you can even see that in our championship game, using him in motion and stuff really got those linebackers flowing, which freed up Bryce underneath that and whatnot.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Earlier in the game, we didn't do it as much, and you know, they were kind of teeing off on Bryce, and we'd run some of that stuff inside, but then we got him moving to make some plays, and they're the you know, you gotta worry about that guy because when he gets the ball in his hands, anything can happen.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Yep, exactly.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And with his uh receiving the award, horse heads is now tied for second for most Ernie Davis awards with EFA at 14 and Notre Dame has 19.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Got some work to do.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: What's that?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: So we got some work to do.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: We're gonna catch up to that.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, that was your uh that was your alma mater too EFA, I think in your own.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yep, correct.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Uh Patrick, Europe.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Has being selected uh really set in yet?
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: And and if it has, when did it really hit you?
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it definitely set in in the following days after the ceremony with all the congratulations, all of the people, you know.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: I work at Apple Ridge, and all they all are walking up to me with the newspaper with me in it, and they were asking if it was me, and they were all congratulating me.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: And it it really did hit me in the following days, not immediately.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: I didn't I didn't grasp the true severity and importance that people around here hold to that award.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: And once I really saw how people reacted to me winning it, I think that's when it really did hit me.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the I call I like to call it the Shimong County Heisman.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Um, it really is that kind of an award.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And a little insight, my dad actually coached Ernie Davis in high school at EFA.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: I never met Ernie, but uh my dad would always say he was an exceptional student athlete, but he was even a better person off the field.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: So he he that's why you were the recipient of this award, is a reward of this award, because of not only being uh a great student athlete, you know, on the field, but also the things you do off the field.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Um, I also understand you're a multi-sport student athlete.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: You participate in winner track, and you're also the center fielder for Horseheads Championship, new you know, New York State Championship baseball team.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So you got a lot of stuff going on there.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: What what do you think you'll do or pursue at the next level?
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I baseball is always I played baseball all my life.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: I just started track up recently and I have some coaches talking to me for sprint football, track, but I'm not all that in love with baseball.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: Um I'm looking to pursue track at the next level in a few colleges, especially Geneseo.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: I'm looking there, I'm pretty good.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: And I got in there a little bit ago.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: So my ambition for the next school for the next steps would be uh to go run track at the next level at a competitive level, uh competitive level and stay competitive throughout my years at college.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, track is a great sport.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: It's it's uh I equate that to swimming, uh, where it is, you know, you if you take it easy, you're gonna be, you know, not very good.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Where in some team sports, you know, you can kind of necessarily take a playoff or kind of slide a little bit, but you can't do that in these individual sports like you know, wrestling and track and swimming.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I remember a friend of mine after football season, he said, I'm gonna take it easy this when I want to go out for the swim team.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: And he came home after the first practice.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: He goes, Oh my god, he goes, That was terrible.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: I said, Yeah, welcome to the world of athletics because you got to appreciate other athletics.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: So I got another uh question for you.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: What's one thing you want people to remember when they talk about Patrick Laney?
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: One thing I would like people to remember the most about me is my character and how I treated others.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: It's not all about the sports, it's not all about the athletics.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: What you do, it's how you treat people, is what people remember.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: You know, in 30 years, no one's gonna remember that you scored two touchdowns in the sectional final game.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: They're gonna remember if you said hi to them in a hallway or if you were being rude or disrespectful to a teacher.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: You know, they remember the social interactions, not what you do on, you know, track, track, surface, a football field, a baseball diamond.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: It's all about how you present yourself and how you carry yourself and the connections you make throughout your life.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: And that's what people remember most about you is how you were as a person.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, you nailed that one, buddy.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: I actually have a business where um I explained about different aspects of how important people are, and if you you treat people like they make a difference, they will.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Uh so you're right and lockstep with that.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: That's that's great stuff.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: You're very uh mature in that sense for a young, such a young student athlete, and that's gotta be one of the reasons you were a recipient this year.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Last question I have, and then I'm gonna hit you with that little bit of uh name recognition, which you've already actually said, but I'll we'll go back to it.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: What are your life goals?
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: What do you want to do once you go uh on to the next step?
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: You know, your four years of college and whatever it is, what do you want to do in life?
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: So I want to go, obviously, to college and I want to major in history, and then I want to take that and apply that to law school where I will graduate and then hopefully become a real estate lawyer and you know, get my license, pass the bar, and become a partner eventually is my plan.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: There's uh there's a lot of money to be made in real estate.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And when you do it, when you do it the right correct way, and that's that's about people.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Everything you do is about people.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: So that's you're you're right in with that.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: What I help people understand is you don't you don't call a company on the phone and say, can I speak to your logo?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Can I speak to your brand?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: No, it's always people to people, so you're you're good there.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Now I got the a little uh word association I want to do with you.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Now I'm gonna mention a word.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: You already mentioned it, but I'm gonna tell you why it's it's and it's such a small world.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Apple Ridge.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: What does that mean to you?
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: Uh it's my place of employment.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: I work there, I've worked there since either August, I think it's July, mid-July is when I started working there.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: I think it's a fun place to be at.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: I I do enjoy it.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: I enjoy talking with all the residents there.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: I love it when they come up to me and they recognize me from the paper, or if they just want to talk to me about something, they're always asking me what I'm gonna do after high school, what my plans are.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: And I really do appreciate all of the company and conversation there.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my I was talking to my mother tonight, and I told her what I was gonna record this podcast episode and you know who the guests were gonna be.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: And she said, Patrick Laney, he works at Apple Ridge, he waits on us.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: And uh she said, Yeah, she I said, see, it's it's a small world because you're absolutely right.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: I remember they one of the more one or more of the residents saw you on TV, but they also saw you in the paper, like you said.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: And you're like a celebrity there, you know, going around.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: So it really is a small world.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And uh, I want to wish you uh the best in everything you do.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: You're you're well ahead of so many uh student athletes or are just people your general age, uh, with your thought process, your humility, uh, your overall focus.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: You got an idea of what you want to do uh the rest of your life and where you want to make a difference.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: So, again, I want to thank you and and Coach Hillman for being guests on the Cover Four podcast.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Appreciate it.
