- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We get together
- 0:03Speaker 1: on Tuesday with Jim Moore. We recap what happened on
- 0:06Speaker 1: the weekend and we look ahead to a road trip
- 0:09Speaker 1: this week to Birmingham as Yukon takes on the UAB Blazers.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Coach six and three. Now, Yukon ends up winning six
- 0:17Speaker 1: of seven of their home games. You only lost a
- 0:19Speaker 1: three pointer to Wake, which you know could have gone
- 0:22Speaker 1: either way. Just to recap what you were able to
- 0:25Speaker 1: accomplish at home this year. I know last year was
- 0:28Speaker 1: a disappointment. This year you really built what I thought
- 0:32Speaker 1: was a sense of this is our place. You don't
- 0:36Speaker 1: come in here and win football games.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you go back to twenty twenty two
- 0:41Speaker 2: when we were five and won at home, and you
- 0:44Speaker 2: know you kind of start to build. What you're saying
- 0:46Speaker 2: is this we have to you know, it's mandatory win
- 0:49Speaker 2: at home. This is our place. Nobody comes in here
- 0:51Speaker 2: and takes anything from us here. Then last year, you know,
- 0:54Speaker 2: we we weren't able to protect the rent like we
- 0:57Speaker 2: wanted to, and so it's not like it's something that
- 1:01Speaker 2: we obsessed with, but it is so important that you
- 1:04Speaker 2: went at home you know, and obviously that the main
- 1:07Speaker 2: objective is to win and win the game, but it's
- 1:11Speaker 2: also to try to build some credibility with our fan
- 1:14Speaker 2: base and get people to believe in this program again
- 1:19Speaker 2: and want to come to the stadium. And you know,
- 1:22Speaker 2: I mean, it's we recognize what a huge investment it
- 1:25Speaker 2: is and both in money and in time. So you know,
- 1:29Speaker 2: it's just proven to people week after week and year
- 1:33Speaker 2: after year that if you want to come and see
- 1:35Speaker 2: good football and see your team win, and we're going
- 1:37Speaker 2: to do that for you when we play at home.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think consistency comes into it. I know
- 1:42Speaker 1: a lot of coaches use that term and maybe it's overused,
- 1:45Speaker 1: but you consistently have to prove to people we're good.
- 1:49Speaker 1: You got to come see us what I'm doing the games.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I say to myself, this is good football. If you're
- 1:54Speaker 1: a football fan and you love college football, you've got
- 1:57Speaker 1: to be here. If you want to watch some good
- 1:59Speaker 1: football games, this is a place to come do it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It's right in your backyard.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and yeah, you know you know this. You have
- 2:06Speaker 2: to earn that and it doesn't happen overnight. It takes time,
- 2:10Speaker 2: and you know, there's a lot of things that can
- 2:14Speaker 2: pull people away in this area. And you know, we've
- 2:17Speaker 2: got a great basketball team, that great hockey. We got
- 2:20Speaker 2: so many great sports that you know, people have to
- 2:22Speaker 2: pick and choose what they want to what they want
- 2:25Speaker 2: to tend they can support them all. And so for us,
- 2:28Speaker 2: it's it's it's proven to them that we're worth their
- 2:31Speaker 2: time and worth their money. We're gonna put a product
- 2:34Speaker 2: on the field, the team on the field that they
- 2:36Speaker 2: can be proud of. But I think just for us
- 2:38Speaker 2: as a team internally, it's, hey, you know, there's the
- 2:42Speaker 2: comforts of home, right It's your your locker room, you
- 2:45Speaker 2: take the same route to the stadium every week. You know,
- 2:48Speaker 2: we're the same color jersey. Everything's just you stay at
- 2:52Speaker 2: the same hotel. You know, there's a routine of it.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So now we have to box all that up and
- 2:58Speaker 2: we have to take it on the road, and we've
- 3:00Speaker 2: got a heck of a challenge this week. But I
- 3:03Speaker 2: think that we have built up some mental toughness and
- 3:07Speaker 2: some confidence and now we just have to we have to,
- 3:11Speaker 2: like I said, bottle it up and take it with us.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I know a couple of players, uh we're talking about
- 3:17Speaker 1: in the locker room, you know, just just keep on
- 3:19Speaker 1: keeping on basically, bring that same attitude, that same energy
- 3:23Speaker 1: when you go on the road. It seems to me
- 3:26Speaker 1: you've got some people in that locker room or who
- 3:28Speaker 1: are capable of that and capable of leading by example
- 3:32Speaker 1: when you get on the road, and in your experience,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and you've been around quite a bit on every level,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you really need guys like that in the locker room,
- 3:39Speaker 1: don't you mean? The coaches can't play, the players play,
- 3:43Speaker 1: and the players have to inspire each.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Other, they do. They have to inspire each other. They
- 3:49Speaker 2: have to hold each other accountable, you know. And we've
- 3:53Speaker 2: got there. I've told you this a lot. We've got
- 3:55Speaker 2: a mature football team, and they truly care about what
- 4:02Speaker 2: it takes. They're willing to commit to what it takes
- 4:04Speaker 2: to win. And I have a lot of respect for that.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And and you know, I think it's reflecting the way
- 4:11Speaker 2: they work each week during practice, just with the consistency
- 4:14Speaker 2: and great effort and great focus. And they don't get
- 4:17Speaker 2: too high and they don't get too low. But leadership matters.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Players can't walk out, you know. We don't get to
- 4:24Speaker 2: cross that line and go play. Coaches don't players do.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I've always said the peer pressure and the peer to
- 4:31Speaker 2: peer accountability is the most important thing that a football
- 4:34Speaker 2: team can have in that locker room. Is just a
- 4:35Speaker 2: sense of responsibility to each other. And we have that.
- 4:40Speaker 2: We have.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and you cunt football fans are tuned in. I
- 4:43Speaker 1: think they we have to have them understand that these guys,
- 4:48Speaker 1: you know, really respect each other, don't want to let
- 4:50Speaker 1: each other down. I mean that's important when you develop
- 4:53Speaker 1: the chemistry of a football program, isn't it.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Sure they got to care about each other. I mean,
- 4:58Speaker 2: you know, listen, I'm sure the deep down inside, the
- 5:01Speaker 2: most important thing to to anybody is you know, your
- 5:04Speaker 2: own success, the safety and health of your family and
- 5:07Speaker 2: things like that. But you know, on a team, the
- 5:11Speaker 2: team ego is the most important thing. You know. Being
- 5:14Speaker 2: able to to sacrifice certain individual maybe goals for the
- 5:20Speaker 2: goals and the objectives of the team. And our guys
- 5:24Speaker 2: are willing to do that is really interesting. You know,
- 5:26Speaker 2: Like Sunday, you know, our receivers didn't get many opportunities
- 5:30Speaker 2: in that game. So you go up to you know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: I go up to a guy like Skyler or tj
- 5:33Speaker 2: or Josiah. You know and say, hey man, we're going
- 5:36Speaker 2: to work to get you guys at the ball. Now.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Don't don't worry about a coach. We just want to win,
- 5:40Speaker 2: you know, we just want to win. You know, you'll
- 5:42Speaker 2: find a lot of places where the receivers are kind
- 5:44Speaker 2: of the most high strung group on the team, and
- 5:46Speaker 2: you know you read about it all the time. They
- 5:48Speaker 2: complain when they don't get the ball, and our guys
- 5:51Speaker 2: don't do that. They just work. I don't hear them complain,
- 5:54Speaker 2: you know, I just see them work and the selflessness
- 5:56Speaker 2: of which they block down the field. I mean that
- 5:58Speaker 2: to me demonstrates a team, a team mentality, and I
- 6:01Speaker 2: embrace that. I love it. That's the back out of it.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that's an important aspect obviously of team building to
- 6:08Speaker 1: have guys that have that, that sensibility of unselfishness, because
- 6:14Speaker 1: I think football, more than any sport, is about being unselfish.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I mean, come on, let's face it, twenty two people
- 6:19Speaker 1: going at it on every single play, and every you
- 6:22Speaker 1: need eleven to get it together to do what you
- 6:24Speaker 1: want to accomplish.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it's unique. I mean not, you know, it's not
- 6:29Speaker 2: one one person's not capable of taking over a game.
- 6:31Speaker 2: That's impossible in this sport. And you have to have that.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You have to have that that selflessness, selflessness to to
- 6:42Speaker 2: you know, be subservient to the goals of the team
- 6:44Speaker 2: at times. And you know it's just like our running back.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You know, I read a quote by Cam there like
- 6:49Speaker 2: a bunch of brothers in there. As long as one
- 6:52Speaker 2: successful in the room, successful, they all feel successful. Talking
- 6:55Speaker 2: about the running back with Cam Edwards, And you know
- 6:57Speaker 2: that's what you want to read, That's what you want
- 6:59Speaker 2: to hear. That you what you guys talking about. That
- 7:01Speaker 2: that is going to give you a chance to have
- 7:03Speaker 2: success right there, right.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Because you're going to need it. Could be Mel Brown
- 7:07Speaker 1: like it was this week against Georgia's State that just
- 7:10Speaker 1: has an outstanding game, or it could be Cam Edwards,
- 7:13Speaker 1: or it could be Darrel Robinson. I mean, and if
- 7:16Speaker 1: guys don't care who who the leader of the pack
- 7:18Speaker 1: is that that's a great, great way to go about business.
- 7:21Speaker 1: All right, Jimora with us. We'll be back in just
- 7:23Speaker 1: a moment. We've got to get to UAB. We're going
- 7:25Speaker 1: to talk about Georgia's State and the way the Huskies
- 7:28Speaker 1: ran too football in that one as we continue here
- 7:31Speaker 1: onlearfield
