- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Are you a glass half empty or a glass half full kind of person?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: If your answer is that you're a glass half empty kind of a person, it means you tend to focus on what you lack.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: If your answer is that you're a glass half full kind of person, it means you tend to focus on what you have.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: So the answer is not about what's inside the glass.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: The answer is what's inside of you.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: It really comes down to how you see the world, which also affects how you perceive your writing and your potential for success.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: As a writer, you can look at the world in one of two ways.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: The first way is to focus on what you lack.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe you lack a big audience, a book contract, the time you'd like to use for writing, maybe you lack a certain amount of income, or the connections that you think you need, and so on and so on.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: You spend a lot of emotional energy worrying and complaining about what everybody else seems to have but you seem to lack.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: So you don't make much progress because you have a negative mindset.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Now the second way is completely the opposite.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The second way is all about focusing on what you do have.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: And make no mistake, in the history of the world, writers have never had it better.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Most of us have no concept of how good we have it as writers today.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Let's take a moment to take stock of what you have as a writer.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Number one, you have the ability to use a free blog, free social media, or free video platforms to reach literally anybody in the world.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Number two, you have the world's most advanced, sophisticated communications and productivity device right there in your pocket at all hours of the day.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And of course I'm talking about your smartphone.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Number three, you have the ability to connect with almost anybody in the world instantly through the internet.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Number four, you have access to more books and more knowledge than the world has ever known, and the vast majority of it is either free or very inexpensive.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And number five, you have more options for publishing your work than anybody in the history of the world has ever known.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Well, those are just a few things that you have as a writer.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: This list could go on much, much longer.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: The Stoic philosopher Epictetus once said, He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: So today, on this day of Thanksgiving, take stock of all the blessings you have, because the glass is not half empty, the glass is completely full.
