Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Righteous Death.
- 0:00Speaker 2: The new album's coming out twenty third, which is a
- 0:04Speaker 2: few days away this Monday, and all I can say
- 0:08Speaker 2: is I've been working with my singer Johnny cripp from Melbourne,
- 0:14Speaker 2: and after six months of him coming into the fold,
- 0:18Speaker 2: it's been really awesome to actually get these tunes which
- 0:22Speaker 2: I've worked on the last four years out.
- 0:25Speaker 1: That's the world will be.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Thanks for joining us today, Jackson, Yeah.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Thank you man, Absolutely pleasure. So, as you say, Righteous
- 0:34Speaker 4: Death release your second album, appropriately titled two on December
- 0:38Speaker 4: twenty third, So how do you feel about it?
- 0:41Speaker 1: Dude?
- 0:42Speaker 2: I'm pretty damn excited about it.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It's been way too long since releases in my head.
- 0:51Speaker 3: And just inching to get it out there.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Yeah, been itching man Like.
- 0:56Speaker 2: It's funny because I've had the whole album pretty much
- 0:58Speaker 2: completed the way three months now, so it's kind of
- 1:02Speaker 2: cool to actually get it out there with a few
- 1:05Speaker 2: singles we've preached the Lies, Born Again, Fools and Total Darkness.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Oh so, tell us a bit more about the album
- 1:14Speaker 4: from a musical point of view and what are you
- 1:15Speaker 4: we going for with it?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Well? With this album.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Like the first album, the first album took a bit
- 1:23Speaker 2: of a black metal ten because I was really influenced
- 1:27Speaker 2: by Mayhem at the time, especially after watching the movie
- 1:30Speaker 2: Lords of Chaos. So originally the concept with the second album,
- 1:36Speaker 2: I wanted to stray more away from black metal, but
- 1:40Speaker 2: still keeping some elements from the first record, so in
- 1:45Speaker 2: that I was listening to heaps of children at bottom,
- 1:49Speaker 2: a lot of corn, and a lot of satiric con
- 1:52Speaker 2: pretty much throughout the whole tracking of this album musically,
- 1:58Speaker 2: so you'll definitely hear ellen, it's a slam death, black
- 2:02Speaker 2: and doom metal throughout it.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Yeah, and you mentioned the singles before, but you've released
- 2:08Speaker 4: Born Again Fools, Preach the Lies and Total Darkness. So
- 2:12Speaker 4: are they've got sonny representation of what to expect or
- 2:14Speaker 4: they just crash your surface?
- 2:17Speaker 2: They are what to expect on the album Born Again
- 2:21Speaker 2: Fools is more slam metal in my opinion, which strays
- 2:25Speaker 2: away from the.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Whole black metalness of the first record.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But Total Darkness that was the first official single and
- 2:34Speaker 2: four years I've released and I really wanted to put
- 2:39Speaker 2: a shine on black metal still while doing this album,
- 2:44Speaker 2: Like I think, it's pretty much four of my favorite
- 2:47Speaker 2: genres within the metal subgenres pretty much all together in
- 2:51Speaker 2: this album.
- 2:53Speaker 4: And so did you like sit down with a with
- 2:55Speaker 4: a set path that you wanted to follow or did
- 2:57Speaker 4: it sort of come together more as the album progressed.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I wanted to set path it originally, Like all the
- 3:04Speaker 2: songs are reading on this album. The track listing is
- 3:09Speaker 2: literally the same as when I recorded the song, So
- 3:13Speaker 2: the track one is literally the first track I recorded,
- 3:16Speaker 2: maybe about three years ago musically all right, yeah, so
- 3:21Speaker 2: for that that was me trying to straight away, but
- 3:25Speaker 2: I thought that in the middle of the album, let's
- 3:27Speaker 2: put some of my black metal influence throughout it. Then
- 3:31Speaker 2: it comes out on the other end with more of
- 3:34Speaker 2: a doom sort of sound, so it does cover up
- 3:38Speaker 2: to the door open for album three.
- 3:40Speaker 1: There.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Well, we'll talk about album two before we get the
- 3:43Speaker 4: album three, mate, because we got to promote that one first.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Oh hell yeah, As you mentioned before, it's the first
- 3:51Speaker 4: of feature new vocalist Johnny crypt So tell us a
- 3:54Speaker 4: bit more about him and what he brings to Righteous Death.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Well, Johnny Crypp, I've had him as a mutual friend
- 4:00Speaker 2: for maybe two or three years on Facebook and he's
- 4:04Speaker 2: been in a few bands down in Melbourne and he's
- 4:09Speaker 2: worked on a few solo projects, and there's one called Sloth.
- 4:13Speaker 2: And when I was looking for a singer, I asked
- 4:18Speaker 2: for people teas inbox me. They email addresses, so I
- 4:21Speaker 2: sent a number of demos out with Johnny. When he
- 4:26Speaker 2: first sang in the track I got back was total darkness.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I was like, this is really cool. He really captured
- 4:34Speaker 2: what I really wanted. He did enough for me to
- 4:38Speaker 2: play with on the post production to get sound really good,
- 4:44Speaker 2: and throughout the whole album he never had to do
- 4:47Speaker 2: any re.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Retakes right very ray.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So yeah, and he's pretty much nailed the whole mythologicalness
- 4:58Speaker 2: of the first record, which I've put into this second record.
- 5:02Speaker 1: So I told you to keep like a dark concept.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Let's keep it the righteous deaths by the dark occultness
- 5:09Speaker 2: to it, and he pulled it off that I could
- 5:13Speaker 2: have expected.
- 5:15Speaker 3: And that's the main difference between this album and Rituals.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Rituals featured a whole host of guest musicians, didn't it,
- 5:21Speaker 4: whereas this one is all the one singer.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yes, correct, I don't even do backing vocals on this record.
- 5:29Speaker 2: There's a few tracks are aptitute lead vocals on the
- 5:33Speaker 2: first record, which is really my downfall for as a musician.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I'm not a strong singer. If I ever play live,
- 5:42Speaker 2: I'm happy to do backing vocals and play the acts.
- 5:47Speaker 4: You are known more as as a guitarist, but you
- 5:51Speaker 4: play all the instruments on the album.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Is that correct?
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah? That is correct, man.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And over the course of the last three and a
- 5:58Speaker 2: half years tracking this record, I've done drum tracks in
- 6:04Speaker 2: two different studios and compiled it through my door, which
- 6:11Speaker 2: is my recording rig. And there was a few a
- 6:15Speaker 2: few songs where I used the plug ins, same plugins.
- 6:19Speaker 1: From where I tracked on the real drum side, programmed
- 6:23Speaker 1: a few elements throughout the record as well.
- 6:27Speaker 3: So you're busy throughout it.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Oh damn, man, it let's just say a few years
- 6:33Speaker 2: work kind of went into Yes.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Why the decision to do it all yourself instead against
- 6:39Speaker 4: session musicians? In is that more because you want to
- 6:41Speaker 4: keep the sound you've got here on the record.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Or I I originally when I first came up to
- 6:49Speaker 2: Queensland number of years ago, now I was gonna look
- 6:54Speaker 2: for musicians to work with, but I didn't realize that
- 6:58Speaker 2: in that time I was going to lose my music
- 7:00Speaker 2: gear In saying that I very much came here with
- 7:06Speaker 2: two out of ten guitars, a bass, and my computer
- 7:12Speaker 2: and my recording in a face. So I kept my
- 7:17Speaker 2: recording gear. I didn't have an AMP to my name.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So in saying that, I never went out to really
- 7:24Speaker 2: look for musicians based on me not having the gear too.
- 7:28Speaker 2: But in saying that now like I've got the gear
- 7:31Speaker 2: and all that, and this year, especially over the last
- 7:34Speaker 2: few months, I've been getting out about jamming with a
- 7:37Speaker 2: few local musicians, trying to get Saying together twenty twenty five,
- 7:41Speaker 2: Oh cool.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Back at the start of the band, like you founded
- 7:46Speaker 4: in Righteous Deep yourself in June twenty twenty, So what
- 7:49Speaker 4: was your early vision for the band and how has
- 7:52Speaker 4: it changed since?
- 7:54Speaker 2: I guess it's stemmed from my solo career, like my
- 7:58Speaker 2: talel and my solo career kind of in twenty nineteen.
- 8:02Speaker 2: But during COVID in twenty twenty, I had a lot
- 8:06Speaker 2: of time at home and a lot of times my
- 8:09Speaker 2: music year ed my recording siu Asian. So since I
- 8:14Speaker 2: lost part of my so I had two jobs at
- 8:19Speaker 2: the time, teaching guitar and working in a local music store.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I lost my guitar teaching gime for example, where I
- 8:27Speaker 2: can't do one of our lessons. So I had more
- 8:29Speaker 2: time on my hands to put back into my music
- 8:32Speaker 2: for once after like throughout my whole adult life. And
- 8:38Speaker 2: in saying that, I guess it was during COVID and
- 8:45Speaker 2: one night I was like, this, heaps of death going
- 8:47Speaker 2: on in the world. I said to myself, it's pretty righteous,
- 8:52Speaker 2: like not in a bad way, but I go right there, right,
- 8:57Speaker 2: And it kind of stemmed from there, And since it
- 9:00Speaker 2: was merging into a black metal album by mid twenty twenty,
- 9:05Speaker 2: I was just like, yeah, rightestet's a Bible passage as
- 9:10Speaker 2: well if you google it. So I was kind of like, oh,
- 9:14Speaker 2: this kind of is like the antimist of it, or yeah,
- 9:21Speaker 2: righteous death was just a dumb thought one night came
- 9:25Speaker 2: to mind, and now I've got two albums behind out.
- 9:30Speaker 4: But without going into he tells mate, like, you caught
- 9:33Speaker 4: it a bit of controversy early on in your career,
- 9:36Speaker 4: like in hindsight, would you have done things differently?
- 9:40Speaker 2: Oh, dude, I got for the time, I wouldn't do
- 9:47Speaker 2: it now.
- 9:48Speaker 1: As a human, I was a bit naive back then.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I will admit I was naive a few years ago
- 9:54Speaker 1: compareds Now and I think that comes with age does.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Indeed it does, But no, with this release, I didn't
- 10:03Speaker 2: want any controversy surrounding it. I wanted the music to
- 10:08Speaker 2: speak for itself. I guess the controversy was back in
- 10:12Speaker 2: twenty twenty when the cathedral went on fire. It was
- 10:15Speaker 2: literally the day before or two single release of Righteous Death,
- 10:20Speaker 2: So it was kind of like a light went on
- 10:23Speaker 2: in my head when I had the news.
- 10:28Speaker 4: But it's one of the focus is just on the music, Like, Yeah,
- 10:31Speaker 4: you're confident enough in the music now to let that
- 10:33Speaker 4: speak for itself.
- 10:34Speaker 1: One hundred percent.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Man. Yeah, I hope that dance to the listeners as well.
- 10:41Speaker 3: We've all been through the controversy made us.
- 10:43Speaker 4: How you come out the other side that matters, isn't it?
- 10:46Speaker 1: A hundred percent? Man?
- 10:47Speaker 2: Like, I wouldn't change my life now, but I've got
- 10:51Speaker 2: it to me years ago.
- 10:53Speaker 1: It was a bit different period.
- 10:57Speaker 4: So was there any planners to take Righteous Death? Are
- 11:00Speaker 4: you still just a studio project at the moment?
- 11:04Speaker 2: At the moment, I'm trying to get out of the
- 11:07Speaker 2: studio world in twenty twenty five, I really want to
- 11:10Speaker 2: see Right's Death at least through a debut show of
- 11:14Speaker 2: some sort so whether I have a few sessions of
- 11:18Speaker 2: musicians behind me and fly Johnny up or Dor show
- 11:21Speaker 2: in Melbourne. I hope that there's definitely a debut rights
- 11:24Speaker 2: bet show throughout next year.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Oh yeah, Broan, just say someone's near to the band
- 11:29Speaker 4: here in this for the first time, like out of
- 11:31Speaker 4: your whole catalog.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Give us three.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Righteous Death songs that they can listen to you get
- 11:35Speaker 4: to know the band better.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I'll definitely say Death, Hate and Pain from.
- 11:40Speaker 2: The first record, and I'll definitely say Born Again Fools
- 11:44Speaker 2: from the new record. And for something a bit different,
- 11:49Speaker 2: a down through tune tribute to the Prince of Darkness himself,
- 11:53Speaker 2: mister Crowley, Beautiful Rowan, Where can people find out more
- 11:58Speaker 2: about the band or get themselves copy of the new album?
- 12:02Speaker 2: The new copy of the new album, I'm hoping to
- 12:04Speaker 2: get some actual copies made up physcal copies made up
- 12:10Speaker 2: early next year, but on the twenty third it will
- 12:13Speaker 2: be available across every streaming platform.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Beautiful mate, all right, Roy, Well, thanks for you.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Tom Jackson had been a pleasure talking about of the
- 12:21Speaker 4: album two, which is Righteous. Their second album is out
- 12:24Speaker 4: December twenty third. From what I've heard of it, she's
- 12:26Speaker 4: a cracker mate, So congratulations from all done and all
- 12:29Speaker 4: the best dude.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Thanks again, Chris, much appreciated,
